Originally published on Jan. 22, 1990, the hardcover title is now drawing massive attention online, backed by a near-perfect 4.9-star rating from more than 53,000 readers. 

The renewed popularity comes as the book continues to be widely recognized as a meaningful gift for life milestones, especially graduations.

We’re celebrating today, not because it’s a Friday, but because it was on this day in 1991 that the greatest grunge band of all time took to the stage at the OK Hotel in Seattle, Washington, and performed for the very first time an unfinished version of what would become a generational anthem and the most iconic song of all time.

Yes, we’re talking about Nirvana and “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” 

The last-minute gig, booked to earn gas money for recording sessions, came nearly five months before the track’s official release as the lead single off the band’s flagship, Nevermind, in September 1991. But even then, there was a charge in the room that was a harbinger for the greatness that was to come. 

“The band walked away with a few hundred bucks, drove down to L.A., and the rest is history,” Steve Moriarty of the Gitsrecalls in Everybody Loves Our Town: An Oral History of Grunge.

Others who were there that night felt it, too. In “The Night Nirvana Changed Everything,” Rolling Stone remembers, “When I saw them play ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ for the first time … I could feel history happening,” adding that it was the defining moment in rock history when “grunge broke.”

That early spark would rage into a wildfire. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” went on to define a generation, racking up more than 3 billion streams, catapulting Nevermind to No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and reshaping the sound of mainstream rock.

With that success, a surprising twist. The song became so popular that the band — especially frontman Kurt Cobain — hated playing it live. 

“I was basically trying to rip off the Pixies; I have to admit it,” Cobian told Rolling Stonemonths before his death. 

Cobain died April 5, 1994, at just 27 years old, but by then, Nirvana had already cemeted their legacy, later selling more than 75 million records and earning induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

And it all started with a half-finished song, played for a little dough, on a tiny stage in the Pacific Northewest — before anyone knew just how contagious the band would become.

Henry Winkler took home an unusual souvenir from the Happy Days set when the show wrapped its 11-season run. The actor, who played  Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli in the ABCsitcom from 1974 to 1984, told USA Today that he snagged a piece of wood from the set when the show ended more than  40 years ago—and he still has it.

Winkler explained that over the years, he used the piece of wood to write down things that happened during filming.

“There is a piece of plywood that was a shelf just outside the swinging doors of Arnold's,” Winkler, 80, told the outlet in reference to the fictional diner that was featured on the series. “I would write (notes on it), for years, like ‘Today, Ron Howard had a red-headed girl named Bryce.’ And then I would write down, ‘Today, we had a red-headed girl baby named Zoe.’ … 'Today, it starts the eighth year of Happy Days.' ‘Oh, I finally got Scott Baio with a spitball.’  And so I have that piece of plywood.”

Winkler previously appeared on his daughter’s What in the Winkler?!  podcast, where he talked about the special memento. “When Ron and I did Happy Days, there was a shelf outside of Arnold's,” he said. “And we put our coffee cups or our water bottles on it as we went through the swinging doors before we made our entrance. At the end of Happy Days, I took that shelf.”

Howard, who played Richie Cunningham on the classic sitcom, told Winkler he was “so smart” to take the shelf.

Henry Winkler kept other ‘Happy Days’ memorabilia

In addition to the plywood, Winkler was lucky enough to get his character’s iconic leather jacket when Happy Days ended. During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Winkler showed off the leather jacket that he still has in his possession.

“That's the Fonz's jacket,” he confirmed. “Well, they made five. And they put them under lock and key. And I got one of them.”

During Happy Days’ heyday, the Fonz was immortalized on all types of memorabilia, from t-shirts to dolls to metal lunch boxes.

Winkler told USA Today that he still has a lot of the merch more than 50 years later. “I have, I think, almost every Fonz action figure and the Funkos now of the different (Happy Days) characters,” he shared. “I have the lunch box that is now in the Smithsonian with a leather jacket. The Fonz, he changed my life. He was fun to play.”

A legendary rock band ranked among the greatest of all time is opening its vault in a major new way.

Grateful Dead have announced a new official streaming experience called Play Dead, giving fans unprecedented access to decades of live recordings.

Authorized by Grateful Dead Productions and developed with Rhino Entertainment, the new platform offers high-resolution audio pulled directly from the band’s extensive archive. The collection spans roughly 30 years of performances, many of which have never been widely available before.

The release builds on the band’s long-standing reputation as one of the most influential live acts in music history. Billboard ranked the group No. 16 on its list of the best rock bands of all time, while BBC Music Magazine placed them No. 11 among the greatest American rock bands ever.

Play Dead allows listeners to explore those performances in chronological order, offering a deeper look at how the band’s sound evolved over time. For the first time, the full Dave’s Picks series and previously CD-only live releases are available to stream in higher-than-CD quality.

New additions will roll out weekly as part of “Dead Drop Tuesdays,” curated by longtime archivist David Lemieux, giving fans a steady stream of material from the vault.

The service is available as an add-on through nugs, with bundle options that include access to a broader catalog of live performances from other artists.

For a band built on live improvisation and ever-changing setlists, the vault has always been part of the story. Now, more of it is finally within reach.

The band’s legacy has only grown more significant in the years since its original era came to an end. Several key members have passed away, including frontman Jerry Garcia, whose death in 1995 marked the end of the Grateful Dead as a touring unit. Founding keyboardist Ron “Pigpen” McKernan died in 1973, while more recently, bassist Phil Lesh died in 2024 and guitarist Bob Weir in 2026, further underscoring the importance of preserving the band’s vast archive.

The song is open to many interpretations. However, songwriters Fagan and Becker cleared the air as to what "Deacon Blues" is really about in a 2015 interview with The Wall Street Journal.

Fagan explained, "Walter and I wrote 'Deacon Blues' in Malibu, Calif., when we lived out there. Walter would come over to my place and we’d sit at the piano. I had an idea for a chorus: If a college football team like the University of Alabama could have a grandiose name like the 'Crimson Tide,' the nerds and losers should be entitled to a grandiose name as well."

In 1979, Gary Numan released his first solo album—and his only U.S. Top 10 hit, with the song “Cars.” The new wave classic from Numan’s debut studio album, The Pleasure Principle, peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 by the following summer.

Rolling Stone ranked “Cars” one of the best road trip songs of all time, describing it as “an industrial-age manifesto.”

“The car is not a symbol of freedom, the car is not a symbol of good times, the car is just an extension of yourself. So why would Gary Numan ever leave it?” the music outlet asked, adding that “over half of this pioneering synth-pop song is an instrumental outro, just to give you some extra time to mind-meld with your dashboard.”

Gary Numan’s song was inspired after a road rage incident

Numan once revealed that his hit song was inspired by a real-life road rage incident. In an interview with Professor of Rock, he recalled, “I was driving along, and some people in front were obviously really upset with me. … I must have done something and not realized, you know, back up the road somewhere and upset them in some way. They got out of their car, and they're screaming and shouting at me, and then they're trying to open my door and unlock all my doors. And I stay in the car, they're trying to break in, and I thought, 'There's no way I'm getting out of this.'”

Numan revealed that he ended up “driving up onto the pavement” to get away from the road ragers. He equated the safety of his car to “a little mini tank for the civilian.”

“When you're in it, you're separate from the world,” he said. "You're safe. You can lock yourself in. You can drive away. You can get away from problems. You know, it's just a fantastically comforting thing. And  that's where the song came from.”

The structure of the song was written in 10 minutes

In the interview, Numan noted that “Cars” is one of only two songs he ever wrote on a bass guitar. “The song basically wrote itself,” he added of the hit single.

Numan elaborated to Billboard, revealing that the first four notes he ever played on his new guitar became the opening chords to “Cars.”

“I took it out of the case, I put it on my lap, and I played [the first four notes of 'Cars'],” he said. "And I thought, 'Oh, that sounds all right.' The very first thing! The very first four notes that I played when I picked the thing up, having not been a bass player, was f---ing 'Cars'!" There is no way you can put that down to any kind of talent. That is just as lucky as you can get! It took me 10 minutes to write that entire song, all the parts for it.”

Numan spent a little more time putting the music to lyrics, but all in all, it was the fastest song he ever wrote. “It’s the quickest song I ever wrote, and I’m still learning ridiculously well from it today, 40 years later,” Numan said in the 2019 interview. “That’s luck!“

The recipe features a warm tortilla filled with tender shredded beef, melty cheese, diced onion, cilantro and creamy jalapeño sauce, rolled and grilled to perfection. Each order is served with a side of warm, savory beef broth topped with diced onion and cilantro for dipping, creating a "rich, indulgent experience in every bite," per the brand. Say less, Taco Bell, we need to try this one.

Its new Cantina Chicken Verde Nachos deliver "layers of flavor and loads of crunch," with crunchy tortilla chips, black beans, a double portion of Cantina Chicken (as compared to the Cantina Chicken Soft Taco), zesty green sauce, a three-cheese blend, reduced-fat sour cream, onion, cilantro and an Avocado Verde Salsa packet, offering a "bold, satisfying nacho experience."

According to Thursday's announcement, Taco Bell is currently testing its new Shredded Beef Dipping Quesadilla at select restaurants in Detroit, Michigan, where it will be available for about $5.49 for a limited time.

However, its new Cantina Chicken Verde Nachos will be on menus at participating stores in Austin, Texas, for $7.99 (prices may vary) while supplies last.

While the majority of Taco Bell fans will have to wait and see whether the company decides to make these items available nationwide before trying them, the fast-food chain has only rolled out two major additions to its menus that guests anywhere can enjoy—at least for now.

Perhaps an underrated psychologist and psychoanalyst to the general public, Erich Fromm is a well-respected social psychologist, sociologist and philosopher. Born in what is now Germany on March 23, 1900, Fromm went on to explore “the interaction between psychology and society,” according to Britannica. He also co-founded The William Alanson White Institute of Psychiatry, Psychoanalysis and Psychology in New York City in 1943. And in today’s Quote of the Day, he shares his thoughts on long-lasting love.

Fromm believed that if “psychoanalytic principles” were applied to fix the ills of society and culture, humans could ideally create and live in a “sane society,” as Britannica reported. He wrote several books and works, and essentially held the belief that if we want to understand people and society, we also need to fulfill basic human needs. He believed that the inability to satisfy those needs is what leads to so many personal and societal issues and conflicts. 

Fromm wrote a ton about human nature, ethics and love. On that topic, he believed love to be a skill you can get better at, rather than just an emotion that just exists or that you can experience. And on that note, today’s quote is about that skill and how it’s a commitment that you actively choose every day.

“To love somebody is not just a strong feeling—it is a decision, it is a judgment, it is a promise.”

Per Goodreads, this popular quote by Fromm comes from his 1956 book, The Art of Loving, in Chapter II, “The Theory of Love,” under the subsection “Erotic Love.” And the full quote reads:

“To love somebody is not just a strong feeling—it is a decision, it is a judgment, it is a promise. If love were only a feeling, there would be no basis for the promise to love each other forever. A feeling comes and it may go. How can I judge that it will stay forever, when my act does not involve judgment and decision?”

As the book’s description reads, it’s “scientifically teaching how love is a powerful solution to problems of human existence.” Different subsections in the book focus on different kinds of love, from brotherly love to motherly love and love of God. In addition to his suggestion that love is “the answer to the problem of human existence,” he also posits that it has disintegrated in modern Western culture and society. And again, he shares that he believes love to be a practice.

Deeper Meaning of Erich Fromm's Quote—Lasting Love, Loyalty and Commitment

Even if you don’t subscribe to Fromm’s belief that love is a practice and something you can get better at, this quote can ring true and still mean something to you. Essentially, he’s saying that it’s not enough just to show up and love somebody. Sure, you can superficially say you love a band or a TV show, or even to a friend you might not be super close with. But regarding a romantic relationship, you need to have actions behind your declarations of love. 

You need to show up and be there for your partner. You decide whether you want to stay in the relationship, get more serious, move in together, get married, have kids, etc. You are the judge of whether they’re a good match for you and will improve your life. And you make an active promise to love and cherish them, which should be followed by more direct action in the future.

We all go through tough times with our significant others. And even if we are big believers in soulmates or love at first sight, you still need to do more than say, "I love you." Because in those rough times, we still have to choose our person. Otherwise, it's not going to last.

In the context of his book and his belief that love is a skill that you can hone, then he’s saying that “decision,” “judgment” and “promise” are all a part of that discipline. But seeing that this is under the “Erotic Love” subsection, he shares that he’s not implying that you can just pick any two random people, have them try hard enough, and they’ll be a good love match. He writes that there is a combination of both love being a practice, while also having a unique bond specific to that one person.

So even though there are elements of attraction, connection, compatibility and more at play, a successful, long-lasting love is one where you both actively participate and choose each other day in and day out.

Neil Patrick Harris is returning to familiar territory, but this time in a different kind of role.

The How I Met Your Mother star announced an exciting project that kids, fans and even kids at heart will surely love.

In an Instagram update, the award-winning actor is thrilled to reveal he will be playing a small but special role in the new Muppets-themed Disney ride experience, which will open on May 26 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The audience will get to hear Harris’ voice as he lends his talent to this special project.

“I got to play with the Muppets! Super excited to announce that I’ll be playing a (very small) part in the new Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets! There are fewer things that I love more than Disney theme parks or anything Jim Henson-related, so getting asked to join in this particular mayhem was extremely exciting, as you can imagine. I can’t wait to experience it all, starting May 26th, at Disney’s Hollywood Studios!” he wrote, alongside a candid photo of the actor hugging Muppet character Gonzo the Great.

In addition to Harris, celebrity cameos will also include Awkwafina, Danny Trejo, Darren Criss, John Stamos, Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker, Yvette Nicole Brown, Wayne Brady and comedian musician “Weird Al” Yankovic.

The revamped Muppets-themed version of the Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster will feature high-energy music, The Electric Mayhem Band and an immersive rock concert-style experience.

“Starting May 26, the legendary ride roars back to life with a rock-charged remix that drops guests straight into the middle of The Electric Mayhem’s biggest night yet,” as cited by the Disney Parks Blog, the official blog for the Disneyland Resort, Walt Disney World Resort and Disney Cruise Line, adding that “DisneyWith high-speed thrills, a pulse pounding soundtrack and a VIP list like no other, this reimagined attraction hits all the right notes."

Prior to this, Harris worked with the iconic puppet characters in the 2011 movie The Muppets, where he appeared in a cameo as himself.
