A Legendary Hersheypark Ride Is Officially Closing This Summer After a 32-Year Run

Fri, 06/12/2026 - 5:10am

If your summer vacation plans involve a trip to Central Pennsylvania to get your fill of chocolate and high-speed thrills, you’ll want to make sure you map out a very specific pit stop.

Hersheypark just dropped some major news that is bound to pull at the heartstrings of nostalgic theme park fans everywhere. One of the park's most iconic and deeply beloved water attractions is officially taking its final bow this season, meaning you only have a few months left to experience it before it is gone for good.

The park quietly announced on its website that Tidal Force—the massive, high-density splash-down ride that has been soaking guests since the mid-1990s—will close permanently on Monday, Sept. 7, 2026.

View this post on Instagram

For over three decades, the towering ride has been a quintessential way for families to cool off during the peak July and August heat, famously plummeting brave riders from a staggering height of more than 100 feet at speeds hovering around 50 miles per hour before sending a massive, wall-of-water tidal wave over everyone in sight.

Even if you aren't quite brave enough to handle that steep 100-foot drop yourself, anyone who grew up visiting the park knows that half the fun of Tidal Force happened on dry land. The ride's exit bridge became legendary in its own right, serving as a designated "splash zone" where onlookers could stand completely exposed to the elements just to get absolutely drenched when a boat hit the bottom of the track.

"When a vessel takes its last voyage, we believe it deserves a proper send-off," the Hersheypark website post says. "After 32 years of making the biggest splashes Hersheypark has seen, the final tide goes out on Tidal Force at the end of the 2026 summer season."

Naturally, the sudden retirement of such a staple attraction has park fans buzzing about what massive new project might be taking over that prime piece of real estate. For now, park officials are keeping their future playbook close to the chest.

Amanda Polyak, public relations manager with Hersheypark, did not give a specific reason why the ride is closing or what exactly will replace it, but hinted that big things are always brewing behind the scenes. "Hersheypark is always planning and exploring ways to enhance the guest experience," Polyak told Lancasteronline.com. "We will share any future plans when appropriate."

If you want to get soaked one last time or stand on the bridge for that iconic wall of water, make sure to book your tickets before Labor Day weekend marks the end of an era.

Queen of the Unapologetic ’90s Anthem Turns 68

Fri, 06/12/2026 - 4:35am

On June 12, 1958, one of the most fearless voices of ’90s alternative rock was born.

🎬 SIGN UP for Parade’s Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬

Meredith Brooks, a native Oregonian, helped break barriers in a male-dominated genre with her signature electric guitar-driven sound and unapologetic songwriting. But it was her 1997female empowerment anthem that transformed Brooks from alt-rock standout into a Grammy-nominated star and enduring symbol of women in rock.

During a time when alternative rock was driven by legends like Radiohead, The Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, Green Day, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Weezer, Brooks emerged alongside trailblazing women artists including Gwen Stefani, Sheryl Crow, AlanisMorissette, and DoloresO'Riordan. With one bold hit, she carved out her place in music history.

Released in March 1997, “B-tch” was penned in a single day by Brooks and songwriter Shelly Peiken at Peiken’s home in Laurel Canyon. According to Songfacts, Peiken turned a horrible day into the lyric, “I hate the world today.” She later recalled believing Brooks was the only artist with the confidence, authenticity, and, well, "b-lls," to turn the provocative track into a mainstream hit.

She was right. The anthem became a global phenomenon.

Featured on Brooks’ second studio album, Blurring the Edges, “B-tch” climbed to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, helped the album reach No. 22 on the Billboard 200, and scored two Grammy nominations. More than a chart success, the song resonated with listeners across generations and genders for its honest portrayal of the complexities of womanhood.

”Men completely get it and are so relieved that somebody’s saying it," Brooks told Entertainment Weekly in 1997, adding, "When we don’t honor every mood we’re in, we move away from it and don’t notice what’s really going on with us."

Brooks was equally determined to challenge expectations as a musician. She played every guitar note on the album, hoping to inspire young women to pick up an instrument themselves.

“If I had listed a guy as a guitarist in the liner notes, everyone would’ve thought that he played all the cool stuff," she said. "Now I want all those 13-year-olds — especially the girls who don't have role models — to look at me with confidence and say, 'I can do that.’”

Though many remember Brooks for her signature hit, her influence and legacy extend far beyond a single song. After her early years in the Pacific Northwest music scene and rocking out with Charlotte Caffey of The Go-Go’s and The Graces, Brooks built a successful music career as a songwriter, producer, and mentor. Through her production company, Kissing Booth Records, she has worked with artists including Jennifer Love Hewitt, Hilary Duff, and Bebe Rexha

View this post on Instagram

Today, Brooks continues to inspire the next generation through her Anybody’s Mentoring Program, where she speaks with high school students about music, creativity, and perseverance. Proving that her impact on women in rock.

Rock on, Mer! And have a wonderful birthday, no matter your mood!

Led Zeppelin Named a Song After This Folk Rocker Turning 85 Today

Fri, 06/12/2026 - 4:17am

In 1941, a future folk-rock pioneer was born in Manchester, England.

Roy Harper turns 85 on June 12, celebrating a remarkable career that has spanned nearly six decades and earned him the admiration of some of the biggest names in rock music. While he never achieved the commercial success of many of his contemporaries, Harper's influence can be heard throughout generations of artists, from Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd to Kate Bush.

Perhaps the most famous tribute came from Led Zeppelin.

Related: 1970 ‘Timeless Classic’ Gets a ‘Beautiful’ New Version From Iconic Rock Band

After the Bath Festival in 1970, the band recorded "Hats Off to (Roy) Harper," a reworking of the traditional blues song "Shake 'Em on Down" that appeared on Led Zeppelin III. Few musicians can claim to have had a song named after them by one of the biggest rock bands in history, a distinction that highlights the respect Harper earned among his peers.

More than 50 years later, that admiration remains evident.

In October 2025, Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page praised Harper after attending one of his concerts in London. Calling Harper "the warrior," Page described the performance as a testament to his long career and songwriting catalog. He also singled out Harper's "stunning and powerful vocal range," writing that the show was "deeply moving."

Harper's connections to classic rock extend well beyond Led Zeppelin. In 1971, Page played guitar on Harper's acclaimed album Stormcock, and the two collaborated again on several later projects.

Related: Beloved Rock Album Is Climbing the Charts for the First Time Since Singer’s Death

Pink Floyd fans may know Harper for another reason. In 1975, he sang lead vocals on the band's song "Have a Cigar" from the album Wish You Were Here. Harper happened to be recording his own album, HQ, at Abbey Road Studios while Pink Floyd were working nearby. When Roger Waters and David Gilmour struggled with the vocal session, Harper stepped in and delivered the performance heard on the finished track.

Over the years, Harper's influence has been acknowledged by artists including Pete Townshend, Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull and Johnny Marr. Anderson once called Harper his "primary influence as an acoustic guitarist and songwriter."

In 1980, Harper dueted with Bush on his song "You" and then he sang backing vocals on her album Never For Ever. At the time, she said of the folk artist, "Roy is one of the greatest English songwriters we've had, and people just don't realize it. And I really think that when they do we're going to have another top songwriter up there. He's brilliant."

His body of work includes more than 20 studio albums, beginning with Sophisticated Beggar in 1966 and continuing through 2013's Man and Myth. Along the way, he developed a reputation for ambitious songwriting, intricate guitar work and fiercely independent artistic choices.

Harper's contributions have also been recognized with major honors. He received the MOJO Hero Award in 2005, presented by Jimmy Page, and was given a Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2013.

And for one of the greatest rock bands of all time, he was important enough to have a song named after him.

1980s Hard Rock Icon, 64, Stuns Fans at European Concert: ‘The Best He Has Sounded in Years’

Fri, 06/12/2026 - 3:34am

Not that they needed it, but Guns N’ Roses had the luck of the Irish on their side Wednesday night (June 10). As 13,000Dublin fans poured into 3Arena, the legendary rockers turned the venue into their own Paradise City to deliver a raucous performance worthy of all the hype.

Guns N’Roses live in Dublin | 10.06.2026 #gunsnroses #dublin #live #2026tour #fyp

♬ original sound - ThatFrontRowGuy

A showcase for the band’s greatest hits, the night saw frontman Axl Rose belting out hit after hit — “Welcome to the Jungle,” “It’s So Easy,” “Mr. Brownstone,” “Estranged,” “You Could Be Mine” — while also paying tribute to Paul McCartney with “Live and Let Die” and treating fans to a couple of new tracks including piano ballad “Nothin’.”

“The band sound tight as a submarine door,” The Irish Times wrote of the show, adding, “You’re constantly reminded how good they were back in the day and that they have no successors.”

In a video shared to TikTok, you can get an idea for yourself. Rocking dark shades and an apropos green plaid flannel studded with sparkly crystals, Rose slays “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” the group’s 1991 smash hit. Traversing every inch of the stage, he engages the audience to sing along. The video even captures Slash playing a doubleneck guitar and sporting his signature leather top hat.

Fans, of course, took to the comments section to share their love, with one writing, “I was there last night, Axl sounded great and was on top form. … Brilliant gig!”

Another wrote, “He actually sounds the best he has sounded in years!” while yet another shared, “Great show. Axl gave us his all for nearly 3 hours. No other artists [give] that.”

Written and originally recorded by Bob Dylan in 1973, “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” has become a favorite for artists to cover. Eric Clapton, Avril Lavigne, Jerry Garcia Band, and so many more have all taken swings at the classic, but Guns N’ Roses' rendition remains the most famous and beloved.

An epic, bombastic hard rock power ballad, Guns N’ Roses’ version injects towering electric guitar solos, driving drums, and Rose’s soaring, gritty vocal range into Dylan’s folk ballad. And the transformation definitely paid off. The track was a hit when it was released in 1991, reaching No. 18 on the Billboard rock chart and even appearing on the Days of Thundersoundtrack.

Currently, Guns N’ Roses are making stops across Europe on their massive World Tour 2026. The band kicks off the North American leg of their tour in late July in Raleigh, North Carolina, with dates headed through mid-September.

This Country Star Couldn’t Find the Instrument He Needed—So He Built One

Fri, 06/12/2026 - 3:00am

On June 12, 1952, future country music innovator Junior Brown was born in Kirksville, Indiana.

While Brown, 73, would go on to build a successful career as a singer, guitarist and songwriter, he is perhaps best known for something few musicians can claim: inventing his own instrument.

For decades, Brown has stood out in the country music world thanks to the "guit-steel," a unique hybrid that combines an electric guitar and a lap steel guitar into a single instrument.

The unusual creation allowed him to seamlessly switch between traditional guitar playing and the distinctive sliding sounds of steel guitar without changing instruments, helping him develop a style unlike anyone else's in country music.

The idea grew out of practicality as much as creativity.

Brown loved both the electric guitar and steel guitar but found it cumbersome to move between the two during performances. Rather than choose one over the other, he worked with his wife, Tanya, to help design an instrument that combined both.

The result was the guit-steel, a custom double-neck instrument that quickly became his signature.

The guit-steel's eye-catching appearance and distinctive sound helped Brown attract attention in an industry often dominated by more conventional performers. Audiences were fascinated not only by the instrument itself but also by Brown's remarkable ability to master both styles at once.

Brown's career gained national attention in the 1990s with songs such as "My Wife Thinks You're Dead," "Highway Patrol" and "Venom Wearin' Denim." His blend of traditional country, honky-tonk, western swing, and guitar virtuosity earned him a devoted following.

In 1996, the music video for "My Wife Thinks You're Dead" won the Country Music Association's Music Video of the Year award, introducing even more fans to his one-of-a-kind sound.

In a genre built on tradition, Brown found success by doing something entirely different. The guit-steel remains one of the most distinctive instruments ever created by a major recording artist.

Quote of the Day: Ralph Waldo Emerson on Self-Reliance and Staying True to Yourself

Fri, 06/12/2026 - 2:45am

Ralph Waldo Emerson was a famous American essayist, philosopher and poet who, thanks to his Transcendentalist stance, believed in the power of individualism and critical thinking, per Britannica. He is known as “one of the most influential writers and thinkers of the 19th century in the United States,” according to the Poetry Foundation. And with his strong views on self-reliance and individualism, our quote of the day hits on his beliefs in what makes a “great man”: being true to yourself and not conforming to what society says.

Emerson was born on May 25, 1803, in Boston, MA, into a religious family, with his father being a Unitarian clergyman and from a long line of religious professionals. Emerson received a good education, eventually attending Harvard College (later University). Even though sickness slowed down his progress in the ministry, he did eventually become an ordained preacher in the Unitarian church by 1829. However, he was already starting to question the institution of Christianity when his wife died in 1831, which fully drove him to doubt his religion and profession. This led him to leave the church in the early 1830s, becoming an “independent literary man,” per Britannica.

As the Poetry Foundation reported, Emerson became a public lecturer (something that lasted for almost 50 years) and then published “Nature,” which was his first published essay and first major expression of his newfound philosophy, which kind of jump-started the Transcendentalist movement in New England. This started his long life of published essays, poems and more. Emerson was also “the first major American literary and intellectual figure to widely explore” classical Asian and Middle Eastern works, becoming many Americans' first look into non-Western ways of thinking and writing.

With today’s quote focusing on Emerson’s view of what makes someone “great,” within the realm of independent thought and individualism, he has some wise words on conformity.

Quote of the Day by Ralph Waldo Emerson

CanvaPro/Parade

“It is easy in the world to live after the world's opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.”

This quote appears in his very famous essay “Self-Reliance,” which he wrote in 1841.

In the paragraph before this quote, he writes that men like to do good deeds as “they would pay a fine in expiation of daily non-appearance on parade.” He then says that he does “not wish to expiate, but to live.”

“My life is for itself and not for a spectacle,” he writes.

Then, right before this quote, Emerson says, “What I must do is all that concerns me, not what the people think,” which flows well into the main point of our quote of the day:

“It is the harder because you will always find those who think they know what is your duty better than you know it. It is easy in the world to live after the world's opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.”

As stated before, Emerson was a transcendentalist—a philosophical and literary movement created in 19th-century New England—meaning that he believed in the inherent goodness of people and that society corrupts the sanctity of the individual. They also believed that you were at your best when you were fully self-reliant, hence his essay title.

Deeper Meaning of Ralph Waldo Emerson’s Quote—Staying True to Yourself

As you can imagine, this quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson goes along really well with the main thesis of the essay it appears in, “Self-Reliance.” The whole point of that is to be your own person and not to bend to conformity. Individualism is fun, and it’s important, according to Emerson. And you know? He’s right!

It is easy to be yourself when you’re on your own, and only have your own thoughts and desires to hear and respond to. But when you live in the broader world, it is also easy to get caught up in what everyone else likes or deems as OK. Whatever the “world’s opinion” is, it can be in your face, making it so simple to just go along with said opinion. Even people who don’t see themselves as people-pleasers or without a backbone can succumb to the general consensus and conform to society because it’s just that easy.

So, as Emerson states, a “great man” can keep the “perfect sweetness” of the individuality you gain in solitude. A stand-up person keeps their distinctiveness—their quirks, personal likes and little idiosyncrasies—despite the world around them. Maybe these things can correlate to the outside world, but they don’t exist because of it.

We can all have our own philosophies in life, and maybe we’re not as intense in our individualities as Emerson would want. Sometimes conformity is okay, or feels nice—who doesn’t love to watch the same thing as most of America and vent about it on X/Twitter? But as long as you have a strong sense of who you are and you don’t fully concede to society, especially at the detriment of your identity, you’re living a good life and are a “great” person.

Quote of the Day: Author Jonathan Swift on How to Keep Money From Living in Your Heart

Fri, 06/12/2026 - 2:41am

Fans of Irish literature likely already recognize the name Jonathan Swift, since he is the author of some famous works like Gulliver's Travels and A Modest Proposal. The writer and satirist was born in Dublin, Ireland, Nov. 30, 1667, and died on Oct. 19, 1745.

Sadly, his early life was marked with tragedy, and his father died before he was born. Fortunately, his uncles stepped in and helped his mother to raise him, and Britannica says they made his education a high priority, which allowed him to eventually earn a bachelor's degree. However, the deeply religious Swift, who was a devoted member of The Church of Ireland, found limited opportunities in Dublin, and he eventually had to move to England to live with another relative, where he fell in love with writing.

Swift went on to earn a master's degree and began publishing essays and satirical works, including A Tale of a Tub. He spent the ensuing years writing political and religious works before the tide turned in England and he once again returned to Ireland. From there, he focused on writing humorous (and sometimes bitter) takes on public affairs, and he saw great success with many of his publications.

In the end, Swift became a beloved figure in Dublin, and he was eventually buried in St. Patrick's Cathedral after his death, where Britannica says his epitaph still appears and reads, "where savage indignation can no longer tear his heart."

Quote of the Day by Jonathan Swift

"A wise man should have money in his head, but not in his heart."

The quote is attributed to Swift, who is said to have written the famous line in a letter to his friend Lord Bolingbroke on April 5, 1729.

The full passage lends more structure to the maxim, and reads, "My lord, I have no other notion of economy than that it is the parent of liberty and ease, and I am not the only friend you have who has [scolded] you in his heart for the neglect of it... And my lord, I have made a maxim that should be writ in letters of diamonds, that a wise man ought to have money in his head, but not in his heart."

Deeper Meaning of Jonathan Swift’s Quote—‘Money in the Head’

The quote appears to suggest that people treat money as a tool to be used logically, whether to purchase things or to provide security, rather than as the main motivation for living.

Modern readers could use the quote as a reminder that money should be viewed less emotionally, and as a means to purchase the things you want, instead of your driving force. Interestingly enough, Northern Expenditure says that Bolingbroke responded with a quote of his own, which said, "A wise man should take care how he lets money get too much into his head, for it would most assuredly descend to the heart," perhaps highlighting how both men worried that too much emphasis on money could be disastrous.

  • “Falsehood flies, and truth comes limping after it, so that when men come to be undeceived, it is too late; the jest is over, and the tale hath had its effect: like a man, who hath thought of a good repartee when the discourse is changed, or the company parted; or like a physician, who hath found out an infallible medicine, after the patient is dead.”
  • “No wise man ever wished to be younger.”

Pop Music's 'Queen of Heartbreak' Turns 47

Fri, 06/12/2026 - 2:31am

Swedish singer, songwriter, DJ, producer, and "stateswoman of alt-pop" according to The Guardian, Robyn, turned 47 on June 12th, 2026. Robyn (born Robin Miriam Carlsson but known professionally as the mononym "Robyn") is a staple in the club scene, queer scene, and effectively any dance night. Known for her upbeat tracks that are coupled with heartfelt and even depressing lyrics, Robyn made a name for herself as the pop music "queen of heartbreak" and her legacy is one for the books.

Robin Miriam Carlsson was born in 1979 in Stockholm, Sweden. Her parents led an independent theatre troupe, and growing up predominantly around artists absolutely influenced her style and sense of self. In the 90s after completing middle school, Robyn signed with Ricochet Records Sweden and collaborated with Max Martin and Denniz Pop on her early work.

At the tender of 15, Robyn began her pop career under RCA Records and released her debut single. Her first album, Robyn Is Here, was released in 1995. Her US breakthrough came two years later with the single, "Show Me Love." She released a second album with RCA before signing to Jive for her third album. However the move proved to be less than ideal and after more than a decade with her labels, Robyn parted ways with them when they didn't support her electronic sound.

In early 2005, she formed Konichiwa Records to make herself an independent artist and to release the music she wanted to make. Her fourth album, the self-titledRobyn, became her first number-one album in Sweden that she released ever, and did so independently. She went on to win several Swedish Grammy awards for the work.

In 2010 she began the Body Talk trilogy, three albums released over the course of a single year, which was led with the single "Dancing on My Own." The song was Robyn's first number-one single in Sweden and her fourth top-10 single in the United Kingdom and the United States. The track was met with critical acclaim with The Guardiancalling it "extraordinary" and "the best song of the year."

The Body Talk albums have sold 91,000 copies in the US alone and remain some of Robyn's most notable work.

In 2017, her song "Honey" was a part of the finale of the HBO hit, Girls. At the time she acknowledged how she hadn't released new music in almost 7 years and hinted that more would be coming soon. She ended up releasing the single "Missing U" as an ode to the fans who were clamoring for more music. An album, named as the same from the Girls single, was released in 2018.

For the next five years Robyn focused her efforts on DJing, producing, uplifting younger artists, and other musical projects. She was crowned "Songwriter of the Decade" by NME in 2020, and in 2021, "Dancing on My Own" made the Top 20 on the list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" compiled by Rolling Stone.

In 2026, Robyn released her ninth studio album, Sexistential.

As an artist, Rolling Stone has commended her for being able to find "the euphoria of heartbreak" and she has become synonymous with being the queen of the "sad banger." Her iconic sound and artistry is absolutely next level and is a must have for anyone who has ever had to dance it out while crying, which is truly, the great equalizer.

Secure zippers and reinforced panels keep pets safely inside, while multiple access points make it easy to interact, feed, or let pets in and out. 1999 Classic Hit Almost Never Made the Album, Then an '80s Rock Icon Changed Everything

Thu, 06/11/2026 - 11:30pm

For fans of 2000s alt-rock darlings Weezer, it's nearly impossible to imagine the band's 2001 self-titled record, commonly known as Weezer (Green Album), without the hit "Island in the Sun." Yet the track nearly didn't make the cut.

Thanks to former The Cars frontman Ric Ocasek, who produced the album, "Island in the Sun" was saved from the cutting-room floor and went on to become one of the band's most enduring songs.

Ric Ocasek Fought to Keep "Island in the Sun" on the Album @umgcatalog

@weezer didn't want “Island in the Sun” on the album. The Cars’ Ric Ocasek and Spike Jonze had other plans.

♬ Island In The Sun - Weezer

When Weezer were finishing the record, the band reportedly viewed "Island in the Sun" as less representative of its sound, instead favoring songs like "Hash Pipe." Ocasek, however, strongly believed in the song and pushed for it to be included on the album.

Ocasek, best known as the leader of The Cars, was a longtime collaborator with Weezer and recognized something special about "Island in the Sun." When the band didn't share his vision of the song's potential, he fought for its inclusion on the album.

His instincts proved correct. "Island in the Sun" became one of Weezer's most successful tracks and remains one of the band's defining recordings.

The song went on to become one of Weezer's biggest international hits, a staple of radio and streaming playlists, and the most licensed song in the band's catalog, appearing regularly in commercials, films, and television shows.

How Spike Jonze Helped Turn the Song Into a Cultural Phenomenon

"Island in the Sun" also became part of the cultural zeitgeist thanks to filmmaker Spike Jonze.

The song's first music video was directed by Marcos Siega and featured the band performing at a Mexican wedding celebration. However, a second video was later created, this time directed by Jonze, who had previously helmed videos for Weezer, the Beastie Boys, and R.E.M. before moving into filmmaking with projects such as Being John Malkovich.

The Animal-Filled Music Video Fans Still Remember

The Spike Jonze-directed video for "Island in the Sun" became nearly as famous as the song itself. Instead of the wedding setting featured in the original version, the band was shown interacting with various animals on a hillside near Los Angeles.

The animal-themed video became one of the most recognizable music videos of the era and perfectly captured the song's laid-back, sunny atmosphere.

"Island in the Sun" Became One of Weezer's Signature Songs

"Island in the Sun" went on to become one of the defining songs of the early 2000s and remains the track most closely associated with Weezer for many fans.

Had it not been for Ric Ocasek's belief in the song and Spike Jonze's memorable visual treatment, "Island in the Sun" might never have reached audiences at all. Instead, it became one of Weezer's most beloved hits and a lasting staple of alternative rock.
