Sometimes it’s hard to believe, but yes, M. Night Shyamalan turns 56 today! The director and “King of Horror Twists” was born on Aug. 6, 1970.

Love his twists or hate them, you know that he set the bar when it came to going into a movie without any spoilers at all. However, once you do know the twist, you find yourself watching again so that you can figure out if there were signs of it from the beginning.

While he is best known for his horror movies, Shyamalan, whose real name is Manoj Nelliyattu Shyamalan, co-wrote the 1999 movie Stuart Little. It would go on to be a massive success with families, but his role in the creation is often overlooked due to his pivot into the world of horror. In fact, in the same year, The Sixth Sense was released, which would put him on the map when it came to exciting and mind-bending twists.

Little do some know, but because of the success of The Sixth Sense, director Steven Spielberg asked Shyamalan to write the screenplay for the fourth Indiana Jones movie. While he did originally say yes, he stepped away from it, realizing that tackling the writing for his childhood hero would be too overwhelming.

After that release, he did have some major missteps in the world of movies. The Last Airbender was a massive flop at the box office, and that was followed by After Earth. So, he ended up having to take a self-financing gamble to create 2015’s The Visit. With just a $5 million budget, the movie would make $98 million in the box office worldwide, and since then, he’s opted for self-funding his projects, including the creation of Split, Glass, and the most recent horror hit Trap.

In a way, it’s great for him as it means that he can have full creative control. It doesn’t always work out, as many know from the criticism that Knock at the Cabin got. At the same time, it means he can easily get his Alfred Hitchcock-style cameos, which include small appearances in The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and much more. It makes him one of the most identifiable directors in the whole of Hollywood.

In recent years, Shyamalan has even turned to writing novels. He co-wrote Remain by romance author Nicholas Sparks. That novel is being turned into a movie, which is set for release in February 2027. It’s a romantic-thriller, and Shyamalan has teased that the movie adaptation will return to his supernatural beginnings, exciting fans of The Sixth Sense.

"The Twist" was already on the Billboard Hot 100 before Chubby Checker ever danced it on television.

The song entered the chart on Aug. 1, 1960, debuting at No. 49, and Dick Clark had been playing it on American Bandstand that summer. Then, 66 years ago today, Clark brought Checker onto the Saturday night edition of his show to lip-synch the song and demonstrate the dance. By the week of Sept. 19 it was the No. 1 song in America.

The Song Was Not His

"The Twist" belonged to Hank Ballard, who cut it with the Midnighters in 1959. Clark considered Ballard's version too suggestive for a mainstream audience, so Philadelphia's Cameo Parkway Records recorded its own with a teenager named Ernest Evans on vocals.

Evans needed a name. During the sessions, Clark's wife Barbara decided the kid already nicknamed "Chubby" reminded her of a junior version of Fats Domino. Checker it was.

No. 1 Twice

"The Twist" held No. 1 for a single week in September 1960, then fell away. It came back. In January 1962 it spent two more weeks on top, a feat only one other song has matched since, Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You."

Checker placed seven singles in the Hot 100's top 10, among them "Pony Time" and "Limbo Rock." None of them traveled the way the first one did. Billboard ranked "The Twist" the No. 1 song in Hot 100 history on its all-time list, a position it held until 2021, and in 2012 the Library of Congress added the recording to its National Recording Registry.

Checker was still performing "The Twist" onstage more than 60 years later. He had been eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since its first class in 1986 and was never nominated until 2025, when he went in on his first ballot. The Hall gave him his trophy early, at a July concert in Des Plaines, Illinois. He skipped the November ceremony and booked a gig for that night instead.

Gentle, melancholic, and human are all words I would use to describe the wonderful music of Elliott Smith, who would have celebrated his 57th birthday today. The beloved singer/songwriter carved a path for himself in the '90s and early 2000s as a space for the sad and downtrodden, who found solace in the wonderful coldness of his lyrics and sound.

Most people are familiar with Smith's work through the '90s classic Good Will Hunting, which featured Smith's music in a big way and even included an original song written by him for the film entitled "Miss Misery," which earned him an Oscar nomination.

The film turned him into a much bigger commercial success, and brought his music to millions of people around the world. The film's emotional themes served as a great way to introduce the world to the songwriting that Smith did so well.

Much of Smith's legacy is tinged by the tragic circumstances of his shocking death, which has been largely considered a suicide, with some select groups of people believing he was murdered. Smith was a complicated man who suffered from depression as well as addiction.

On October 21st, 2003 Smith's girlfriendJennifer Chiba had locked herself in the bathroom after an argument with the singer. While inside, she allegedly heard a scream, and walked out to find Smith with a knife embedded in his chest. He would unfortunately pass away at the hospital. A note was found on a sticky note that said  "I'm so sorry, love, Elliott. God forgive me."

Smith's life shouldn't be defined by his death however, as he gave a great amount of beauty to the world while he was here. His music is some of the most unique and emotional ever recorded, with songs that have touched fans for years. On his birthday, we should remember the wonderful music that captured the hearts of so many around the world.

Phish, the iconic '80s rock band behind the fan-favorite “You Enjoy Myself,” delivered an exciting surprise to fans after announcing an upcoming fall tour.

Expanding their 2026 run, the band composed of Trey Anastasio, Jon Fishman, Mike Gordon and Page McConnell shared the details of the additional shows.

In an Instagram update, Phish revealed they will have eight more shows scheduled throughout the month of October.

The fall leg will debut in Atlantic City with a three-night run followed by a two-night performance in Virginia.

Phish will also mark their first Florida performance in a decade with a one-night run  in Jacksonville, before wrapping up the fall tour in Alabama with a two-night concert.

Moreover, the post also included information on how and when people can get tickets for the event.

“A ticket request period is now underway. Tickets.phish.com (ending at Noon ET on Monday, August 10). Tickets go on sale to the general public beginning Friday, August 14 at 10 AM ET (with onsales following at 11AM + Noon ET). In addition, a limited number of travel packages for Atlantic City will go on sale tomorrow (Wednesday) at Noon ET (link in profile),” the post reads.

2026 has been a busy year for the band as the two-time Grammy nominees started the year with Phish: Riviera Maya, the annual four-night concert in Mexico.

Hosted by the band, this was their ninth concert residency, which took place in Cancun from Jan. 28 to 31.

By the middle of 2026, Phish had completed their 2026 Summer Tour with a 21-date North American trek.

The band kicked off the run in July, performing across major cities in Wisconsin, Indiana, Georgia, North Carolina and more.

The summer tour was also highlighted by multi-night residencies at Madison Square Garden and the band’s upcoming annual Labor Day Weekend run in September.

Thirty-five years after forming, Belphegor is preparing to unleash another chapter in its uncompromising career.

The Austrian blackened death metal veterans have announced that they have completed work on their 13th studio album, which is scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2027 via Reigning Phoenix Music. The record follows 2022's The Devils and continues the band's decades-long commitment to extreme metal.

"Finally, the musick-al process is complete," said frontman Helmuth Lehner in an Instagram post. "Rooted in our unmistakable vision, the glorification of the Devil. The nine tracks are a ceremonial invocation of pure Black Death Metal!”

While the album's title and additional details remain under wraps, the band encouraged fans to revisit two songs that will appear on the upcoming release.

The first, "Sanctus Diaboli Confidimus," arrived in August 2025, followed by "Scarlet Beast – Leviathan" in February 2026. Together, the tracks offered an early glimpse of the record's dark atmosphere, blistering riffs, and relentless intensity.

Formed in 1992 in Salzburg, Austria, Belphegor has spent more than three decades establishing itself as one of extreme metal's most enduring acts.

Blending black metal, death metal, and occult themes, the band has built a loyal international following through albums including Lucifer Incestus, Pestapokalypse VI, Conjuring the Dead, and The Devils. Despite numerous lineup changes over the years, Helmuth has remained the creative force at the center of the project, steering Belphegor through an ever-evolving extreme metal landscape.

"I'm inspired by everything I see and experience," Lehner told New Noise Magazine. "I adore all types of books on the occult, strange happenings and the paranormal, necromantic, cannibalism, and serial killers. […] Everything that is dark, anti and non-conformist grabs my attention. I had many chances during my life to learn and know that real life is often way stranger than any fiction."

The band has also maintained a relentless touring schedule, performing at many of the world's biggest metal festivals while sharing stages with some of the genre's most respected names. That dedication has helped Belphegor remain a fixture of the international metal scene more than three decades after its formation.

"Belphegor is more than a band to me," Lehner said. "It's unreal to me when I think back on what I have had the honor to do so far. We've traveled and toured the world again and again, we never split up, joined any trend, or went mainstream like so many 'back in the days' extreme bands."

With recording now complete, attention turns toward the album's release in early 2027. Thirty-five years after Belphegor first emerged from Austria's underground, the beloved metal band continues to push forward, proving its appetite for creating uncompromising blackened death metal remains as fierce as ever.
