Selena Gomez said "a beanie," and Jennifer Stone knew exactly what she was supposed to do. The two actresses posted a video to the official Wizards of Waverly Place Instagram on August 5, 2026, performing the "Crazy Funky Junky Hat" song from season 1 of the show. They got every word right. They got every move right. The song first aired in 2007. Neither of them forgot a single step. The video dropped the same day the Wizards Beyond Waverly Place four-part finale began streaming on Disney+.

Here's how it went. Gomez, 34, says "a beanie." Stone, 33, responds without missing a beat. Then they're both into it: "What's that? A hat! Crazy, funky, junky hat. Overslept, hair unsightly, trying to look like Keira Knightley. We've been there, we've done that, we see right through your funky hat." Both of them were word perfect. Both of them were smiling just like they'd never stopped.

In the show "Crazy Funky Junky Hat," was Alex and Harper's thing — a silly song two besties made completely their own. Watching them do it in 2026 is watching two grown women reaching back and finding something they made together when they were just teenagers. "Word!" Gomez says at the end before they pull each other into a hug. The caption was perfect: "Like no time has passed."

The fans agreed immediately. "This means so much to me you don't understand," one wrote. "My childhood," said another. "Childhood came rushing back," wrote a third. These are people in their 20s and 30s. The song did it anyway.

Wizards of Waverly Place premiered October 12, 2007, and ran until January 6, 2012. Stone played Harper Finkle, the mortal best friend to Gomez's wizard-in-training Alex Russo. Their on-screen friendship was one of the show's most beloved elements.

Gomez executive produced the Wizards Beyond Waverly Place spinoff with David Henrie, who played her brother Justin. Stone and Gregg Sulkin, who played werewolfMason Greyback, also both returned for the finale. The four-part finale premiered August 4th on Disney Channel and hit Disney+ on August 5. It's the first time Stone and Gomez have been on screen together in over a decade.

The Song That Survived Almost 20 Years Intact

Their off-screen friendship turned out to be just as real as the one on screen. Though it took some work to find its way back. In 2023, Gomez appeared on the Wizards of Waverly Pod podcast hosted by Stone and David DeLuise and said the biggest mistake of her life was losing touch with the cast. "I felt ashamed of the decisions that I made," she told them. "I didn't want you guys to see me in the state that I was in because A you would have told me the truth, which terrifies me, and B I didn't want to let you down." Stone and DeLuise were both in tears. The "Crazy Funky Junky Hat" video posted August 5, 2026, is the answer to that.

Stone was in attendance at Gomez's wedding to Benny Blanco in September 2025. "I was a total mess," Stone said. She described returning to Harper for the finale as "wonderfully weird in the best way. She was everything I needed as a teenager, and stepping back into her shoes felt like reuniting with a childhood best friend." She called the routine "a song and dance we'll never forget." Her farewell to the character: "Until next time, Miss Finkle."

One of country music's biggest stars is heading to one of its most intimate stages for a special cause.

Lainey Wilson will perform two acoustic fundraiser concerts on Oct. 20 at the historic Ellis Theater in Philadelphia, Mississippi, with proceeds helping complete Marty Stuart's deeply personsal project called the Congress of Country Music, a museum and performing arts center dedicated to preserving the genre's history.

The Grammy winner will take the stage twice that evening for "An Acoustic Evening with Lainey Wilson," with performances scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. The concerts are expected to offer fans a rare opportunity to see the rising superstar in the theater's intimate setting, a sharp contrast to the stadiums she's currently playing alongside Chris Stapleton.

Marty Stuart Says Lainey Wilson Has Become a 'Touchstone Figure'

Stuart, the Country Music Hall of Famer behind the Congress of Country Music, praised Wilson while announcing the fundraiser.

"Lainey Wilson is a vibrant performer who is blazing through the country music world today," Stuart said. "She's authentic, she's fearless, and she has become a touchstone figure to so many of her fans around the world. They trust Lainey with their hearts and their stories."

Wilson has become one of country music's biggest stars over the past several years, earning a Grammy Award, Grand Ole Opry membership and 12 CMA Awards while collecting nine No. 1 singles, including "Heart Like a Truck," "Watermelon Moonshine" and "4x4xU." She recently headlined Stagecoach, released the deluxe edition of Whirlwind and is in the midst of a stadium tour with Stapleton.

Tickets Go on Sale This Week

Stuart said bringing Wilson to the Ellis Theater reflects the venue's mission of pairing major artists with an intimate listening experience.

"Bringing an artist of Lainey's caliber to the Ellis Theater continues our commitment to creating unforgettable musical moments in Philadelphia," Stuart said. "There's something special about hearing great songs in the Ellis Theater."

Tickets for both performances go on sale Friday, Aug. 7, at 10 a.m. local time.

Perez Hilton opened up about his past mistakes and efforts to make amends with people he had hurt before his recent hospitalization.

The blogger and media personality, who is currently receiving medical care after appearing to self-harm during a TikTok livestream, previously reflected on his regrets and personal struggles during an interview with Sean Hannity that was recorded in July.

"I mean, I have a lot of regrets," he said on FOX News Media's Hang Out with Sean Hannity podcast. "It's hard to have people really accept this, but if you like attention, attention is like a drug. I was definitely an attention addict back then."

Hilton went on to compare attention-seeking behavior to other forms of addiction, explaining that people struggling with addiction can sometimes hurt those around them while chasing what they desire.

"I think now I do a better job of keeping it in check," he added.

As he reflected on his past, Hilton said he had been trying to reconnect with some of the people he may have offended throughout his career. One of those people was Britney Spears.

When Hannity asked how that conversation went, Hilton explained that he reached out through an "intermediary" and shared that Spears' team received his message and it went "well."

"I reached out to Khloé Kardashian, and she responded back," Hilton said. "She was very kind. Some people don't respond back, and that's fine."

Hilton was taken to a hospital in south Florida on Aug. 4 after a 911 call came in about a "suicide attempt." Shortly after, his family released a statement.

"Many of you have reached out with concern for Perez, and we are incredibly grateful for the overwhelming outpouring of love, support, and prayers,” a statement, posted on Hilton’s website, read. "We can confirm that Perez is receiving medical care, and our family’s focus right now is on his well-being."

... But that hasn't stopped him from wearing what is believed to be a sweet gift from his granddaughter Princess Charlotte.

11-year-old Charlotte reportedly made the two friendship bracelets that her grandfather has been spotted pairing with everything from the suit he wore at the 2026 Commonwealth Games to the military uniform in which he took part in his official birthday parade, Trooping the Colour.

On the latter occasion the sentimental strands of colourful thread were spotted peeking out from below Charles' sleeve as he waved to the crowds from the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

Apparently Charlotte has been making friendship bracelets for members of her family, and it looks as though Charles has been one of the gifts' recipients.

Charlotte's participation in the timeless tradition of giving and receiving friendship bracelets began after she attended Taylor Swift's Eras Tour at Wembley Stadium in London in 2024.

The Eras Tour is notable for the thousands of friendship bracelets Swifties made in advance of the concerts in order to exchange them with fellow fans.

Charlotte and her 13-year-old brother Prince George were brought to the Eras concert by their father Prince William, and afterwards met Taylor Swift backstage and posed for a selfie with the princess of pop and her now-husband Travis Kelce.

William has also been spotted in one of the bracelets made by his daughter. Made of green and blue beads and spelling out the word 'Papa', the Prince of Wales was asked about the accessory when he was visiting South Africa.

""Well, this is a relic, if you like, from a Taylor Swift concert that my daughter decided that she wanted to create a bracelet for," he said.

"She gave it to me when I came away. So I promised that I'd wear it and try not to lose while I was out here."

Charlotte's mother Kate Middleton has also been seen wearing a blue friendship bracelet that was made for her by her daughter as a 'good luck charm' ahead of the Princess of Wales successfully completing the Three Peaks Challenge earlier this summer.

Kate and Charlotte have had a number of adorable twinning moments in recent months. Last week the Waleses stepped out for a rare family outing to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with mother and daughter coordinating in white dresses with black stripes.

And for Trooping the Colour The Princess of Wales and Charlotte were spotted with a particular matching accessory that had a special significance to Kate’s late mother-in-law and Charlotte’s grandmotherPrincess Diana.

Charlotte’s three-strand pearl bracelet was identical to the one her mother wore. As for Kate’s own bracelet, it once belonged to Diana and was one of her favorite pieces of jewelry.

Procol Harum was an English rock band that formed in the 1960s and released one of their most well-known hits, "A Whiter Shade of Pale," which became an influential commercial success for its baroque pop and rock style.

Gary Brooker formed the band with lyricist Keith Reid after realizing no one was willing to perform their tracks, and soon brought on Ray Royer, Matthew Fisher, David Knights, and Bobby Harrison. The relatively undiscovered band would develop a track known for its mesmerizing organ piece by Fisher. No one expected "A Whiter Shade of Pale" to have the impact it did with its sound and confounding lyrics that entranced fans, even John Lennon.

The song became an international hit and cover staple with over 1,000 reported releases by other artists. It landed at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and ranked at No. 1 in various countries, including Switzerland, the UK, New Zealand, Ireland, France, Brazil, Australia, and many more.

Reid was the one to develop the track's lyrics, and told Uncut magazine he heard the phrase at a party: "I had the phrase ‘a whiter shade of pale,’ that was the start, and I knew it was a song. It’s like a jigsaw where you’ve got one piece, then you make up all the others to fit in. I was trying to conjure a mood as much as tell a straightforward, girl-leaves-boy story. With the ceiling flying away and room humming harder, I wanted to paint an image of a scene."

"I wasn’t trying to be mysterious with those images, I was trying to be evocative. I suppose it seems like a decadent scene I’m describing. But I was too young to have experienced any decadence, then. I might have been smoking when I conceived it, but not when I wrote. It was influenced by books, not drugs."

Reid and Brooker would develop 15 tracks for the band's first album that they were really excited about, and amid rehearsing and cutting four tracks, "A Whiter Shade of Pale" sounded the best of all. Back in the day, the musician explained it wasn't just about how good the song was, but how well it recorded to get the perfect sound.

According to SongFacts, Brooker had listened to "a lot of classical music and jazz," as well as having played rock and R&B music for years. When he met Keith and read his lyrics, he knew immediately he wanted to create the music for it, and did it while sitting at a piano.

"It fitted the lyrics within a couple of hours. Things can be gifted. If you trace the chordal element, it does a bar or two of Bach's 'Air on a G String' before it veers off. That spark was all it took. I wasn't consciously combining rock with classical, it's just that Bach's music was in me," he said.

"A Whiter Shade of Pale" would become the most influential hit of their careers and a staple during the 1967 Summer of Love. It would become a commercial success, selling over 10 million copies worldwide and winning "The Best British Pop Single 1952–1977" at the Brit Awards alongsideQueen's "Bohemian Rhapsody." The track would later be inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Procol Harum's hit would also become a pop culture staple, appearing in multiple films and TV series, from Martin Scorsese's New York Stories to Oblivion.

Martha Stewart has enjoyed a long and illustrious career in the mainstream entertainment industry, something best seen with her iconic tenure on the long-running TV series, The Martha Stewart Show.

In a recent interview with People magazine, the 85-year-old TV personality revealed that, due to her love of rap music, she always wanted to have favorite artist Eminem appear on an episode of The Martha Stewart Show.

Unfortunately, in spite of her constant efforts to get the 15-time Grammy Award winner on the series, Eminem repeatedly passed on the chance to pop up on the series.

Explaining her famed friendship with rapper Snoop Dogg, Stewart said that the reason she first invited Snoop on the show was because of her interest in hip hop and rap. It's for a similar reason she reached out to Eminem, who, unlike Snoop, has yet to meet Stewart face-to-face.

"I invited Snoop to be on my show [in 2008] because he was a rapper, and I was attracted to rappers," Stewart said. "I like rap music. I especially like Eminem, and I could never get Eminem to come on any show. He would not accept any invitation. I still haven’t met him."

Humorously, Stewart also said that Snoop that "doesn't like me" due to her having "street cred" from her brief stint in jail for insider stock trading.

"It gave me street cred," Stewart said. "I mean, you would never know what jail was like until you go to jail. It’s a horrible place. It’s not a restorative process."

Princess Eugenie may be taking a page out of Meghan Markle's book following the birth of her third child.

The royal, first cousin to Prince William and Prince Harry, welcomed a baby girl with husband Jack Brooksbank on Monday — and, similar to when Markle gave birth to Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, she did not share the new addition's name immediately.

In fact, instead of an official photo call that Markle participated in with her firstborn and that Kate Middletonparticipated in after the birth of all three of her children, Eugenie announced the baby's birth like how every other millennial mom would — with an Instagram announcement.

"Jack and I are so excited to announce Baby Girl Brooksbank!! We are beyond in love with our girlie," she captioned a sweet photo of the baby.

The couple, who are also mom and dad to sons August, 5, and Ernest, 3, live in Lisbon, Portugal, part-time and is where Eugenie delivered baby No. 3. Their choice to keep the baby's name a secret for now — which she also did upon the arrival of her two sons — suggests that the parents are opting for more privacy, similar to Markle and Harry.

And while it's definitely easier for Eugenie, the daughter of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor (formerly Prince Andrew) and Sarah Ferguson to lead a more private life as she's 12th in line for the throne, the fact that she hasn't shared the names of her children immediately after they were born suggests that younger royals are living a less traditional lifestyle.

Given that Eugenie does not need to follow protocol as closely as Markle did when she was a working royal, the fact that the former "Suits" star did not share Archie's name immediately and did not make an appearance outside the hospital the same day she gave birth, similar to Middleton, was considered a major break with protocol.

Still, Eugenie and Brooksbank received well wishes from working royals as the baby's photo was also shared on the official royal family instagram account.

"Her Royal Highness Princess Eugenie and Mr Jack Brooksbank are delighted to announce the safe arrival of their daughter, born on Monday, 3rd August 2026, at 6.20pm, at a hospital in Lisbon, Portugal," the announcement read. "Their Majesties The King and Queen and other members of The Royal Family were delighted to be informed of the news."

Riley Burruss is learning first-hand how public mistakes can be difficult to bounce back from. The NYU grad hasn’t been on her best behavior at times in the second season of Bravo’s Next Gen NYC. Tensions between Burruss and McCann have broiled over from last season, and this time around, Burruss is insistent on standing up for herself. But in one argument, she may have taken things a bit too far.

Burruss is admittedly not a fan of McCann, and during one verbal spat, things almost turned physical when Burruss nearly threw a drink at McCann. The cast, most notably her longtime friend and former Real Housewives of Atlanta co-star Arianna Biermann, tried to intervene. 

While appearing on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, Burruss was asked how she felt watching the episode back. “Honestly, I’ve said this even to my mom (Kandi Burruss), I felt so embarrassed, you know? When I first talked to my friends about it, I was like, ‘Okay, it couldn’t have been that bad.’ And then, I watched it, and I was like, ‘That was so bad,’” she admitted. She says she was shocked watching it back and apologized to her friend group.

Cohen also asked whether she had a difference of opinion about Biermann’s support. In the episode, Burruss grew emotional when speaking with Biermann about the incident, saying she didn’t feel Biermann stepped in soon enough. In flashbacks, Biermann is seen trying to calm Burruss down. She also offers her water, takes her to get pizza away from the group, and reminds her how she may feel watching it back. 

In hindsight, Burruss says Biermann did all she could to support and protect her. 

“My mom knew I was going to beat myself up over it, and she was like, ‘If you’re going to act like this, then you need to take accountability, and you need to learn from these actions,” Burruss said. Regarding what she learned, she said not drinking as much in such settings may serve her better in the future. 

Biermann and Burruss have been on Bravo since the inception of RHOA, with Biermann since the age of 6 in its inaugural season, and Burruss joining with her mom in her second season around the same age. Their mothers were once close, but their friendship fizzled out over a bad business deal. Luckily, their daughters have reconnected.

Eilish, 24, plays Esther Greenwood, the aspiring writer at the center of Plath’s semi-autobiographical 1963 novel.

Celebrity gossip account DeuxMoi released the set images, which also appeared on Page Six. The behind the scenes photos capture Eilish wearing dark brown hair cut to shoulder length, held back by a percher hat. In several shots, she wears a fitted, short-sleeve knit shirt in cherry red that matches her lip color. Other images show the star in a waist-nipped blue button-front dress with pearl earrings and minimal makeup apart from bold lipstick.

The period costume choices sparked discussion on Reddit, where users debated the casting and Eilish's background in performance. "Her mom is a pretty well-respected acting coach so my hopes are moderately high," wrote one user.

"It’s so funny to see the comments are like night and day compared to when her casting was originally announced," another fan noted. "I have a lot of faith in Billie. She seems to really like artistically challenging herself and is willing to put her ego aside and put in the work. When she got criticisms of just being a whisper singer she hired a vocal coach and we got Birds of a Feather and The Greatest out of her. I’ve learned not to underestimate the girl."

Others focused on her physical appearance for the role. "On a side note, she looks so pretty in red and softer styling," one comment read. "So I know the clothes and period centric makeup and vibe are doing a lot of heavy lifting but she does NOT look like a pop star at all and one of the most challenging thing to do as an actor is disappearing into a role," another added. "I really hope she pulls this off as I’m excited to see it!!"

Another user wrote: "pretty ballsy for her to do a role like this for her debut, hopefully she's really prepared. excited to see it!" Plath’s novel, first published under a pseudonym shortly before the author's death, details a young woman's internship at a New York magazine in 1953 and her subsequent experience with depression. The story was adapted for film in 1979.

While Eilish is best known for her music career, having won multiple Grammy Awards and Oscars, the musician previously appeared in the 2023 Amazon Prime Video series Swarm. Production details regarding a theatrical release date for The Bell Jar have not yet been announced.

In 1965, theByrds took Bob Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man” and gave it a completely different feel, turning the acoustic song into a folk-rock hit. Their debut single climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, just a month after Dylan’s original appeared on Bringing It All Back Home.

The success of the Byrds’ version helped introduce folk rock to a much wider audience. It also caught Dylan’s attention, showing him how his songwriting could take on a new energy with electric guitars and a full-band arrangement.

Dylan first recorded “Mr. Tambourine Man” during sessions for his 1964 album Another Side of Bob Dylan. That early version featured Ramblin’ Jack Elliott on backing vocals, but Dylan chose not to release it at the time. He eventually returned to the song and included his own version on Bringing It All Back Home.

Around that period, Byrds manager Jim Dickson introduced the band to Dylan’s recording, hoping they would consider covering it. According to Songfacts, most of the group wasn’t interested. At first, the song didn’t seem like an obvious fit for the Byrds, and few of them imagined it would become their breakthrough record. 

Roger McGuinn heard a different possibility in the song. The guitarist and vocalist recognized the song’s potential and reworked the arrangement, changing the rhythm and trimming some of Dylan’s lyrics to better fit the Byrds’ sound. 

When Dylan visited the studio and heard the Byrds recording his track, he was reportedly amazed by their interpretation. He exclaimed, “Man, you could dance to this!” The band had transformed his acoustic folk song into something brighter and more electric, showing Dylan another direction his own music could take. 

The success of “Mr. Tambourine Man” also led to years of discussion about what the song actually meant. 

Some listeners have interpreted it as a drug reference, viewing the tambourine man as a dealer and the “song” as a metaphor for a substance. Dylan, however, rejected that idea and said the inspiration came from guitarist Bruce Langhorne. 

Langhorne’s work with Dylan during the early ’60s left an impression, especially the enormous tambourine he brought into the studio. 

In the liner notes for Biograph, Dylan recalled, “He had this gigantic tambourine. It was, like, really big. It was as big as a wagon wheel. He was playing, and this image of him playing just stuck in my mind.” 

He later added, “Drugs never played a part in that song … drugs were never that big a thing with me. I could take ‘em or leave ‘em. Never hung me up.”

Decades after reaching No. 1, the Byrds’ “Mr. Tambourine Man” continues to be recognized for its influence. The recording has appeared on major rankings, including Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Songs of All Time,” and helped shape the folk-rock movement.

The two versions have also fueled a long-running debate among listeners. Dylan’s original highlights his poetic storytelling, while the Byrds’ version gives the song new energy. 

That debate continues online as well. One Reddit user started a discussion comparing the two recordings, with one commenter writing, “The Byrds’ ‘Mr. Tambourine Man’ is wayyyyyy better than Bob Dylan’s.” 

Others defended Dylan’s legacy. “Consider this...besides the Beatles, Dylan is the most covered artist. One man. One helluva poet,” another user wrote.

A third argued that the Byrds’ polished approach changed the song’s character. “It's a song about being sleepy, drunk and lost in life. The Byrds version is way too polished. They don't sound like the singer in the song. It's pretty, but it's off.” 

For years, Disney fandom has been the home of some wild stuff: homemade Elsa edits, lip-synced Star Wars clips, Marvel supercuts stitched together, and a whole lot more. Well, now that devotion has an official home.

The Walt Disney Company andTikTokannounced a global content-sharing deal on Wednesday that lets TikTok creators build short-form videos using characters and scenes from Disney, Star Wars, Pixar, Marvel, and FX. The companies described it as a first-of-its-kind agreement, and the resulting videos will appear both on TikTok and inside Verts, the vertical video feed on Disney+.

"The best storytellers are fans first," said Asad Ayaz, Disney's chief marketing and brand officer, in the announcement. "Today, fans are celebrating our stories in entirely new ways." Dawn Yang, TikTok's global head of entertainment, said creators "extend the life of films and shows into conversations that fans discover and share."

The pilot rolls out in the United States in the coming months before expanding to other markets. Participating creators opt in to a program that gives them access to hundreds of Disney films and series, along with placement on Disney+ through a tiered Disney Creator Ambassador Program. Neither company disclosed financial terms, and the program does not publicly promise creators payment.

It marks the first time TikTok videos will stream on a platform other than TikTok itself, a notable shift for the app.

The announcement arrived during Disney's fiscal third-quarter earnings, which beat Wall Street expectations. Adjusted earnings came in at $2.06 per share, up from $1.61 a year earlier, on revenue of $25.25 billion. The quarter was lifted by theme parks, streaming profits and the box office run of "Toy Story 5," which crossed $1 billion worldwide.

It also marked the first full quarter for chief executive Josh D'Amaro, who took over from Bob Iger in March. On a call with analysts, D'Amaro said short-form video "creates a more complete experience" on Disney+, aimed at keeping subscribers watching longer and discovering more.

Disney+ reports roughly 130 million subscribers and ranked as the third-most-watched U.S. streaming platform in May, capturing about 5% of watch time, according to Nielsen data. A steady stream of fan-made content gives the app something its own trailers cannot: a feed that refreshes constantly, built by the people most invested in the material.

The partnership follows Disney's short-lived licensing deal with OpenAI for AI-generated video.

“It did seem to kind of slow my development into being an adult,” she shared in a Los Angeles Times article in 2021. “Actors are so much braver today. You look at Daniel Radcliffe from ‘Harry Potter,’ how brave he’s been with his career. He’s really gone out on a limb, and I admire that so much.”

She developed bulimia and became a people pleaser, desperately trying to satisfy the adults around her. A she got into her twenties, she discovered that much of the money she earned as a child star had disappeared, subjected to a 91% tax rate that was created to bolster England’s finances after the war.

It’s time to bring back Capture the Flag. According to a psychologist, it’s a better teacher of teamwork than most apps, and that makes sense.

Why? Well, consider the objective and how you're supposed to play Capture the Flag: Teams work together to steal the other team’s flag. But let’s get the psychologist’s reasoning.

“Active cooperation, decision-making in real time and developing flexibility of thought all occur when children decide how they will work together,” Dr. Carolina Estevez, PsyD, a psychologist at Soba in New Jersey, tells Parade. “Apps cannot prompt kids to think creatively about their own process.”

She points to research suggesting that the best way to develop socially competent, resilient young people is to provide them with opportunities to engage in active, cooperative play. Passively consuming digital media simply can’t do that, while Capture the Flag is a key example.

Screen-Based vs. Physical Teamwork: What Psychologists Say

When it comes to screen-based teamwork (like certain video games) versus physical, in-person teamwork (like Capture the Flag), the former can help, but it’s missing some major pieces.

“Verbal and non-verbal communication, emotional regulation, physical activity and spontaneous problem-solving are all components of the developmentally effective nature of physically interactive play,” Dr. Estevez explains. “Children who participate in these types of activities learn social competence and develop resiliency in responding to real-world social cues.”

How To Set up Backyard Capture the Flag in 5 Minutes 

Another pro of Capture the Flag is that it can be set up quickly. Dr. Estevez shares the following steps:

• Divide children into two groups. 
• Draw the boundaries of the two territories with cones, towels or rope.
• Find two of the same thing to act as the “flags,” such as a bandanna or pool noodle, and give one to each territory.
• Establish a basic “tag” rule. 
• Designate a “jail” area. 
• Clearly define the boundaries for the entire game. 

“You do not need much to get started other than some markers and a small object to represent the flag,” Dr. Estevez says.

The Developmental Magic of ‘Unstructured’ Conflict

Kids, like adults, will experience conflict during group activities. They might argue about fairness, rules or strategies. While that may sound negative, it’s actually a good thing. Conflict (especially unstructured conflict) can help a child’s development as they learn conflict resolution and how to navigate tricky situations.

“Since adults are not intervening in every issue, children have the opportunity to resolve issues among themselves through negotiation, compromise, self-regulation and repairing after a conflict,” Dr. Estevez tells Parade. “Every opportunity children have to demonstrate they can successfully resolve future interpersonal challenges creates increased confidence.”

Unstructured play and social skill activities for kids—of which Capture the Flag is both—are beneficial in multiple ways, even (and perhaps especially) in their tendency to invite conflict.

3 Modern Rule Variations To Keep It Fair for All Ages

For some kids, a standard game of Capture the Flag might be “too easy” or “too hard.” Ahead, Dr. Estevez shares some rule variations you can implement (besides just keeping the Capture the Flag rules simple) so kids of all ages can play and learn.

1. Safe zone reset 

Consider designating certain areas within the playing field as “safe zones.” Here, younger players can spend up to 15 seconds before returning to the game if they cross into enemy territory. 

“This allows younger or new players to remain engaged without losing either excitement or competitive strategy,” Dr. Estevez says.

2. Multiple flags

Instead of one large flag (or bandanna or pool noodle), let each team have three. 

“Each team will have to communicate with one another, distribute tasks among players and adjust their overall strategy so that each player has a role and responsibility, and no single player is solely responsible for winning,” Dr. Estevez notes.

3. Rescue challenge

“Jail” doesn’t have to be a “dead zone” or area of defeat. Instead, non-jailed players can complete a task, such as answering a trivia question or performing five jumping jacks, to help another player "escape."

This is an extra way to challenge and stimulate their mind and body. It also allows players to continue “participating and working with others throughout the remainder of the game,” according to Dr. Estevez.

Games can be just for fun—kids need that—but they can also be made educational or into life lessons, too.

Her mother was admittedly hesitant about Rowan joining a reality show. When the actress spoke with Jenna Bush Hager and Sheinelle Jones on TODAY in May and was asked how she felt about Rowan’s decision, she was honest that it wouldn’t have been her first choice for Rowan.

“Oh, I was sick to my stomach!” Shields said at the time. Despite such, she advised Rowan to be “the voice of reason” on the show. Rowan has seemingly followed her mom’s advice, and even has become more of a comedic relief amongst the friend group in the midst of all of the drama.

Lucille Ball was born 115 years ago today. The future I Love Lucy legend was born Aug. 6, 1911, in Jamestown, New York. Ball died in 1989 at age 77, but left behind an extraordinary legacy that still resonates with fans decades later.

In honor of her birthday milestone, here we take a look at Ball’s life in photos.

Ball was long known as a ”wacky redhead” when she played Lucy Ricardo on I Love Lucy, but in her early career as a model she was a glamorous blonde under the name Diane Belmont.

Ball’s longtime assistant Wanda Clark once told Voices of Oklahoma that Ball was inspired to change her name during a train ride out of her hometown. “Lucy thought that Lucille was kind of dull and Diane sounded more exotic,” she shared. “She was on the train going from Jamestown to the city and saw Belmont, the city, and Belmont Racetracks, and so Diane Belmont she had for a short time.”

Ball went on to work as a Goldwyn girl, wearing a long blonde wig for the 1933 Eddie Cantor film, Roman Scandals. She later became a contract player for RKO Radio Pictures and decided to stand out among the many other blonde starlets by changing her hair color to raven red.

Ball met her future husband Desi Arnaz on the set of the 1940 movie Too Many Girls. They married just six weeks later.

"Eloping with Desi was the most daring thing I ever did in my life," Ball said in  Warren G. Harris' biography, Lucy & Desi: The Legendary Love Story of Television's Most Famous Couple, per People. “I knew I shouldn't have married him, but that was one of the biggest attractions. My friends gave the marriage six months. I gave it six weeks."

By the time Ball and Arnaz began their CBSsitcom in 1951, she was well known as a redhead. In a quote posted by The Television Academy,  Ball’s longtime hairdresser Irma Kusely clarified that the hair color wasn’t actually red.

“I call it apricot, but a lot of people think of it as red,” Kusely said. “It’s not red at all.  It’s a golden apricot color. We used regular hair dye when I did her own hair. We then used, as a balance, a henna rinse, which she was famous for. She had a safe of it in my garage … When we did a show in Las Vegas, she met a very wealthy sheik… and he would send her the henna. She moved a box of henna, which was in my garage but in the safe. There was a lot of it left when she left this world, but I had to give it to the estate.”

During her run on I Love Lucy, Ball’s pregnancy with her son, Desi Jr., made headlines. In a rare move for that era, her pregnancy was written into the show. Ball gave birth to her real baby boy on the same day that her TV character gave birth to her son, Little Ricky. The Arnazes also had a daughter, Lucie, who was born in July 1951, just three months before I Love Lucy premiered.

Ball went on to star in the CBS sitcoms The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour, The Lucy Show, and Here’s Lucy, where she continued to show her gift for physical comedy. Behind the scenes, she was a powerful executive for Desilu Productions.

After her marriage to Arnaz ended in 1960, Ball bought his share of ownership of the production company, making her the first woman to own a major studio, according to the  National Women’s History Museum.

She wed comedian Gary Morton in November 1961 and was with him for 28 years, until her death.

Ball never lost her love for acting. Her final series, Life With Lucy, aired in 1986 for just 13 episodes, marking a rare miss for the comedy legend.

During an appearance on The Late Show With Joan Rivers, Ball revealed that she didn’t expect to “get chastised” for returning to TV after two decades away.

“I can take critique about the show, I’ve done that for years, but to be critiqued for coming back at all, that threw me,” she admitted. “I cried, my God, I cried.  …I didn’t know that I could be that frightened and hurt.”
