Dave Mason, guitarist and co-founder of the band Traffic, has died.
The English singer-songwriter passed away at his home in Gardnerville, Nevada on Sunday at the age of 79.
The heartbreaking news was confirmed by his family on his official Facebook page.
Although the cause of death has not been revealed, the family shared that he passed away peacefully after spending time with them, including his beloved wife Winifred and their dog Star, on his final day.
“It is with deep and profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of Dave Mason. On Sunday, April 19, after cooking an amazing dinner with his beloved wife Winifred, he sat down to take a nap with sweet Star (the Maltese) at his feet. He passed away peacefully, in his favorite chair, surrounded by the beautiful Carson Valley that he loved so much. A storybook ending. On his own terms. Which is how he lived his life right up until the end. He leaves a lasting imprint on the soundtrack of our lives and the hearts he has lifted. His legacy will be cherished forever,” the caption reads.
Dave Mason and Dave Mason's Traffic Jam perform at NJPAC at Prudential Hall on July 16, 2015 in Newark City.Prior to his death, Mason was forced to postpone a tour in 2024 due to an "urgent heart condition" that he discovered during a routine medical checkup.
A year later, he called off his full tour schedule as he was still recovering from a "severe infection."
"With deep regret, I must cancel all tour dates for 2025 due to ongoing health issues stemming from the infection I had in March," he mentioned in a statement at the time.
However, in the same year, Mason announced his retirement from touring due to persistent health problems.
As the music legend prioritized his health, he took the opportunity to thank his fans and those around him including his doctors for their compassion and guidance.
“I’m incredibly grateful to my team of doctors—this has been challenging territory, to say the least,” he said as cited by Ultimate Classic Rock, adding “A heartfelt thank you to all the fans, and to my family, band, agents and the venues who’ve waited patiently and supported me throughout this journey.”
The late musician is known for co-establishing the acclaimed rock band in 1967 together with Chris Wood, Steve Winwood and Jim Capaldi.
At the height of their career, Traffic released a string of notable hits including "Hole in My Shoe," "Paper Sun” and "Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush.”
In 1970, Mason pursued a solo career and released his debut album, Alone Together.
It was his sixth solo studio album, Let It Flow, when he achieved major solo success through his second single "We Just Disagree,” marking his highest-charting solo hit after reaching No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Trader Joe's Fans Swear This Viral New Serum is A Dupe For Glow Recipe
Trader Joe’s may be known for epic snacks and frozen aisle staples, but shoppers are now making room in their carts for skincare.
The grocery chain’s new Dewy Skin Serum, priced at just $9.99, is quickly going viral online, with some fans comparing it to pricier glow-boosting products from Glow Recipe. For beauty shoppers looking for that glass-skin finish without the luxury price tag, it’s easy to see why the product is getting attention.
According to the Trader Joe's website, the serum is designed to deliver lightweight, layered hydration while leaving skin with a smooth, lit-from-within look. The formula includes four forms of hyaluronic acid to help attract and retain moisture, plus niacinamide to support the skin barrier and help brighten uneven tone.
The brand also notes that ingredients like sappan bark, rosehip fruit, and watermelon fruit extracts add a soothing boost, while a touch of mica creates a luminous finish that is dewy rather than glittery.
View this post on InstagramThat ingredient lineup has led many shoppers to compare it to Glow Recipe’s bestselling dewy serums and watermelon-inspired skincare, which often retail in the $34 to $45 range depending on size and formula.
“The dewy serum is so worth it,” one fan exclaimed along with two fire emojis on an Instagram post highlighting the product.
Another claimed “the glow serum is sooooo amazing guys.”
A third stated, “This stuff is actually good! I use it in my morning skincare routine, definitely gives moisture and glow.”
Others said it looked similar to the Glossier’s Futuredew, which sells for around $30.
“Oooo looks like the Glossier Future Dew!” one noted.
One Redditor wrote, “this looks very similar to glossier future dew which I love!”

People Are Worried AI Will Replace Humans at the Airport— Could It Actually Happen?
Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming the way we travel, from facial recognition at security to automated check-in kiosks. But a new wave of concern is emerging: could AI eventually replace humans in one of the most critical parts of aviation: air traffic control?
Recent discussions around new AI-powered software being developed for the U.S. aviation system have sparked both excitement and anxiety. For travelers, the question is simple but important: Is the future of flying becoming automated, and should we be worried?
Related: I Absolutely Refuse to Use TSA Facial Recognition at the Airport— Here's Why
Why AI Is Entering Air TravelThe push toward AI isn’t happening randomly. It’s being driven by real problems in the aviation system. Much of the current U.S. air traffic control infrastructure is outdated; some systems are comparable to technology from decades ago.
This aging system has contributed to delays, outages, and inefficiencies across airports. In response, the government is investing billions of dollars into modernization, including new software that uses AI to better manage airspace and flight schedules.
The goal isn’t just modernization, but rather efficiency. AI can analyze massive amounts of data in real time, helping predict congestion, adjust flight timing, and reduce delays before they happen.
What AI Would Actually DoDespite the fears, AI isn’t being designed to take over the control tower. Instead, it is intended to act as a decision-support tool, helping human air traffic controllers make better, faster decisions.
For example, AI systems could:
- Identify scheduling conflicts weeks in advance
- Suggest minor flight adjustments to avoid delays
- Optimize how planes move through crowded airspace
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy made it clear that AI will assist, not replace, humans. In fact, he directly addressed the concern, saying replacing controllers with AI “is not going to happen.”
Why People Are Still ConcernedEven with those assurances, the concern isn’t unfounded. Air traffic control is one of the most high-stakes jobs in the world. Controllers are responsible for safely guiding thousands of flights every day, often making split-second decisions that impact lives.
The idea of handing any part of that responsibility to AI raises valid questions:
- Can AI handle unpredictable situations, such as weather emergencies?
- What happens if systems fail or glitch?
- Could over-reliance on automation reduce human oversight?
These concerns are especially relevant as automation expands across the travel experience, from self-service bag drops to biometric boarding gates.
There’s also a broader anxiety at play: as AI becomes more capable, many industries, not just aviation, are facing questions about the future of human jobs.
What This Means for TravelersFor now, travelers are unlikely to notice dramatic changes in how flights are managed.
The biggest impact of AI in aviation will likely be behind the scenes:
- Fewer delays due to smarter scheduling
- More efficient routing in crowded skies
- Potentially smoother travel experiences overall
Importantly, human air traffic controllers will remain at the center of operations. Aviation is a highly regulated industry, and safety standards make a fully automated system extremely unlikely in the near future.
In fact, many experts argue that human judgment is irreplaceable, especially in complex or emergency situations where nuance and experience matter.
So, will AI replace humans at the airport? All signs point to no. While AI is set to play a bigger role in managing air travel, it’s being designed as a support system, not a replacement for the people who keep flights safe every day.
For travelers, that’s actually good news. It means a future of more efficient, less stressful flying, without sacrificing the human expertise that makes aviation one of the safest forms of travel in the world.

1971 Hit Film Ranked Among ‘Best Movies’ of All Time
In 1971, a quiet, deeply reflective film captured the fading spirit of a small American town and left a lasting mark on cinema.
The Last Picture Show, directed by Peter Bogdanovich, has since been ranked among the best movies of all time by Rotten Tomatoes, a testament to its enduring emotional impact.
Set in a declining Texas town in the early 1950s, the film follows a group of high school seniors as they navigate love, loss and the uncertainty of adulthood. Through its ensemble cast, the story paints a vivid picture of a community grappling with change, where traditions are fading and the future feels increasingly uncertain.
"When I was in an airport or a store, on one of those displays I saw a bunch of paperback books," Bogdanovich told AMCI. "One of them said, The Last Picture Show. I turned it over to the side and I looked at it and thought this sounds like it could make a good film."
The film features breakout performances from Jeff Bridges and Cybill Shepherd, alongside acclaimed turns from Ben Johnson and Cloris Leachman, both of whom won Academy Awards for their roles.
"When the picture came out, it got good reviews," recalled Bogdanovich. "One of them [Newsweek] said it was the best film by a young director since Citizen Kane. Orson [Welles] sent me a telegram that said reading your notices is like opening presents at Christmas."
Shot in striking black and white, The Last Picture Show evokes a sense of nostalgia while also confronting the harsher realities of life in a town on the brink of decline. Its understated storytelling and emotional honesty set it apart from more conventional coming-of-age films.
At its core, the movie is about endings the end of youth, the end of an era and the quiet disappearance of a way of life. That sense of loss resonates throughout, giving the film a haunting, timeless quality.
More than five decades later, The Last Picture Show continues to be regarded as a landmark in American cinema.
With its inclusion in Rotten Tomatoes' ranking, the film stands as a powerful reminder of storytelling's ability to capture both personal and cultural change and preserve it for generations to come.

Hit Country Song Ranked the Worst to Listen to While Working in New Study
If you're hoping to be productive at work, you might want to avoid listening to certain songs. Entertainment industry database Booking Agent Info did a study based on the most streamed songs of 2025, focusing on specific criteria to come up with a list of songs that are the "worst to listen to while working."
In the study, which was sent to Parade, three key factors were taken into consideration: Tempo (BPM), loudness (decibels), and danceability.
"Using a balanced benchmark, 120 BPM, –15 dB, and 50% danceability, the study identified which songs are most likely to disrupt workflow, either by being too energizing or not stimulating enough," reads a portion of the study. "The study analyzed 100 of Billboard’s 2025 most-streamed songs, scoring each track for tempo (BPM), danceability, and volume (dB). Each metric carried an equal weight of 33.33%, and reference values were set at 120 BPM, –15 dB, and 50% danceability, representing a balance between energy and calm suitable for focus. Combined scores reveal which songs are most likely to interrupt workflow, whether by overstimulation or under-stimulation."
Topping the list is "Smile" by Morgan Wallen, a popular song that was released in 2024.
"With a tempo of 127 BPM and relatively high danceability, the track sits just above the ideal threshold, making it subtly distracting despite its laid-back appeal," according to Booking Agent Info. The song received a score of 83.78 per the study's metrics.
Wallen's song "Just in Case" was in the No. 2 spot, with a score of 83.63. Other tracks rounding out the top five worst songs to listen to while working include Billie Eilish's "WILDFLOWER," Alex Warren's "Ordinary," and "House Again" by Hudson Westbrook.
Out of the 98 songs on the list, 10 are tracks by Wallen.
1979 Heartbreaker Hit No. 1 47 Years Ago Today
On April 22, 1979, a heartfelt country ballad climbed to the top of the charts, giving Charley Pride yet another No. 1 hit during one of the most dominant runs in country music history.
The song was “Where Do I Put Her Memory,” written by Jim Weatherly and released earlier that year as the third single from Pride’s album Burgers and Fries/When I Stop Leaving (I'll Be Gone). It became his 21st No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, holding the top spot for one week and spending a total of 10 weeks on the chart.
At its core, the song is a quiet gut punch. It tells the story of someone trying to move on after a breakup, packing away every physical reminder of a past relationship—photos, gifts, even the smallest traces—only to realize that memory itself refuses to be boxed up. The central question lingers like a ghost in the room: where do you put something you can’t physically remove? It actually kind of feels like the precursor to another country hit that topped the charts a year later: "He Stopped Loving Her Today" by George Jones.
That emotional pull helped the song resonate with listeners, fitting neatly into the “countrypolitan” sound that defined Pride’s biggest hits—smooth, polished, and built for crossover appeal. By the late 1970s, Pride was already a towering figure in country music, with dozens of Top 10 hits and a reputation as one of RCA Records’ best-selling artists, even outselling icons like Elvis Presley during his peak years.
His success was all the more remarkable given his unconventional path. Before music, Pride pursued a career in baseball, playing in the Negro leagues and minor league systems before turning fully to singing. That second act turned into a historic run, including 30 No. 1 hits and major honors like CMA Entertainer of the Year and a Grammy Award.
“Where Do I Put Her Memory” may not always be the first song mentioned in Pride’s catalog, but it stands as a perfect example of what made him so enduring. It’s simple, direct, and emotionally universal—a breakup anthem that doesn’t shout, but lingers. And nearly five decades later, its central dilemma still feels impossible to solve.

Move Over Celebrity Babies: The National Zoo’s Baby Elephant Linh Mai Is Making a Grand Debut
Rihanna’s Rocki, Sofia Richie Grainge’s Henry, Jack Osbourne’s Ozzy Matilda, and Joey Larence’s Ford may have all made recent headlines. But there’s one celebrity baby who is stealing the spotlight away from these famous faces. And, she weighs just under 500 pounds.
There’s a new baby in town! The Smithsonian’s National Zoo recently welcomed a new female Asian elephant back in February, and this plucky pachyderm made waves in the conservation community as the first of her kind born in captivity in nearly 25 years.
View this post on Instagram When Was the Baby Elephant Born at the National Zoo?The National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute (NZCBI) announced the birth of Linh Mai after a 21-month pregnancy. Born to 12-year-old Nhi Linh and 44-year-old Spike (and yes, that’s quite the age difference), the calf has quietly roamed the zoo for a few months now. While her mother hasn’t had a major presence in Linh Mai’s life, the baby elephant has reportedly gotten closer to her “Auntie Swarma.” The 52-year-old elephant has never had children of her own, but according to the National Zoo, she has stepped up and taken on a maternal role.
When Can the Public See Linh Mai?April 22 is a major day for fans of the new baby. Even though Linh Mai has already made news, with the National Zoo providing plenty of photos, videos, and updates, this is the first day for the public to view the now two-month-old. Not only can you catch a glimpse of the calf in person, but if you don’t have a visit planned to Washington, D.C. anytime soon, you can also watch her on the Elephant Cam.
Brandie Smith, the John and Adrienne Mars Director of the NZCBI, said, in a press release, “Watching an elephant calf explore and interact with her herd is one of the most heartwarming and joyful experiences you can have at a zoo.” Smith continued, “We are so excited to introduce Linh Mai to our members and the public. As the first elephant born here in nearly 25 years, her birth was historic, not only for our Zoo family but also for this critically endangered species.”
The NZCBI’s director also added, “I can’t wait for visitors to see her, learn about our work to protect elephants here and across Southeast Asia, and feel inspired to help save them in the wild.”
This isn’t the first time the public has had a chance to, in a way, interact with the baby elephant. In February, the National Zoo gave fans of the calf a chance to help choose her name. The winning moniker, Linh Mai, means spirit blossom.

Bob Dylan Played His Wife This 1976 Song to Save Their Marriage - It Almost Worked
Bob Dylan has spent his entire career as an enigma; hiding behind mystical lyrics and refusing to explain what his songs mean. However in 1976, he did something completely out of character — and it involved the most vulnerable moment of his entire life.
The legendary folk singer invited his then wife, Sara Dylan, to the recording studio while he was working on his album "Desire." Their marriage was tumultuous at the time. They'd been together since 1965, raising their four children plus Sara's daughter, Maria, from a previous relationship. But by 1975, everything was completely falling apart.
Then Dylan played her a very personal song he'd just penned. That song was called "Sara."Unlike anything he'd ever recorded before, "Sara" wasn't abstract or mysterious. It was a direct, heartbreaking plea to the woman he loved when the relationship was falling apart.
"Sara, Sara / Whatever made you want to change your mind?" he sang, his voice wrapped up wholly in memory and longing. "Don't ever leave me, don't ever go."
The song referred to very specific and significant moments to him from their relationship — staying up for days at the Chelsea Hotel writing "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" for her, watching their beautiful children play on the beach as young babies, and building a life and family together in Woodstock.

For an artist who is notorious for keeping his personal business private and separate from his music career, this level of exposure was unpheard of and completely out of character. Desperate times, call for desperate measures. He was laying his heart completely bare, naming his wife directly, recalling their actual memories, begging her to stay.
Bob Dylan's Most Personal Song Was Really a Marriage-Saving AttemptSara was moved. The gesture worked — temporarily. Their marriage was mended in that studio moment, and the relationship continued a bit longer.

The take Dylan sang directly to his wife that day became the final version on "Desire," closing out an album that also featured the hit "Hurricane." Every single time someone listens to "Sara," they're hearing the exact heartbreaking performance. In front of a room full of awestruck bystanders, Dylan laid his soul bare and sang to his wife in a final effort to try to save their marriage.
The song's power wasn't enough to fix what was already broken. Despite their emotional reconciliation in the studio on that day, Sara and Bob divorced in 1977, just one year after "Sara" was released.
For audiences recently discovering Dylan's story through Timothée Chalamet's portrayal in A Complete Unknown, this moment represents something rare in Dylan's catalog — a song where he let his guard down, stopped hiding behind metaphor, and finally just said exactly what he meant.
It almost worked. And that "almost" is what makes "Sara" one of the most heartbreaking songs Dylan ever recorded.

Following a Season 2 finale that left audiences reeling with a game-changing flashback, fans are looking forward to the next chapter in the sci-fi series. Based on the novels by Hugh Howey, there are already theories about how the show will adapt the source material. Perhaps the series will delve deeper into the backstory of the silos, exploring the origins of their creation and the motives behind the strict societal rules governing their inhabitants. Fans disapointed that we might see less of Rebecca Ferguson having nothing to fear as showrunner Graham Yost has confirmed the actor will be a "big part of Season 3", according to an interview with TVLine.
Here's everything to know about Silo Season 3, including release date, cast and trailer.
Related: Silo Season 2 Ending, Explained
What is Silo about?Silo is a sci-fi drama set in a post-apocalyptic world where the remnants of humanity live in a massive underground silo, sealed off from the toxic wasteland outside. Governed by strict rules and riddled with secrets, the silo is a society built on control, where questioning the truth can have deadly consequences. The story follows Juliette Nichols (Ferguson), an engineer turned reluctant investigator, as she uncovers the lies and mysteries surrounding the silo’s origins, its leaders, and the world beyond its walls. Adapted from Hugh Howey’s Wool series, the show weaves a compelling narrative of survival, rebellion, and the search for freedom in a world designed to suppress it.
Has Silo been renewed?Yes, the show was renewed for two final seasons. "It has been a richly rewarding experience to adapt Hugh’s epic novels with our partners at Apple and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring this complete story to the screen over the course of four seasons,” said showrunner and executive producer Graham Yost. “With the final two chapters of Silo, we can’t wait to give fans of the show an incredibly satisfying conclusion to the many mysteries and unanswered questions contained within the walls of these silos.”
When will Silo Season 3 premiere?Apple TV has announced the new season will premiere on July 3, 2026.
What will happen in Season 3 of Silo?In the final moments of Season 2, Silo hinted at what content it might explore in Season 3. The last scene of the series shows Congressman Donald Keene (Ashley Zukerman) on a date with Helen (Jessica Henwick). Both characters play a major role in the second book in the Silo series, Shift. This very likely means that Season 3 will adapt content from the book. However, the book features very little of Juliette and other inhabitants of the season. Yost has said that Rebecca Ferguson will be featured heavily, so it's highly likely that the show will cover both the current story of the show while also adapting the content from Shift.
What books will Season 3 of Silo cover?Given the final scene of Season 2, it's expected that Season 3 will adapt storylines and characters from the second book in the series, Shift. In that novel, the focus drifts away from Silo 18 and into the past, as we get to see not only how the silos were created (and who created them), but also get to see the lives of individuals in the other silos prior to the events of the show. While Howey has said that there will be parts of Shift that will be adapted, the show is certain to take a few liberties from the source material.

Inside The New Universal Attraction That's Dedicated to Spooky Season All Year Round
For some of us, Halloween isn’t strictly reserved for the month of October… It's a lifestyle. In my heart, it's a spooky season all year long. And that could be attributed to the fact that I’ve been visiting the country’s premier Halloween event, Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights since its inception in 1991. And now that legendary event has been reimagined at an entirely new level, inspiring a year-round attraction in Las Vegas.
Universal Horror Unleashed is a large-scale, year-round horror experience located in Sin City’s entertainment and arts hub, AREA15. The first-of-its-kind, year-round attraction is helmed by the masters of haunts at Universal Destinations & Experiences.

@theshayspenceUniversal Horror Unleashed in Las Vegas—here’s my ranking of all the houses. Thank you @Universal Horror Unleashed for hosting me and spooking me. Happy Halloween friends #hhn #lasvegas #universalstudios #halloween #hauntedhouse #vegastok
♬ Spooky Ooky - NotYeti What is Universal Horror Unleashed?Universal Horror Unleashed is a pioneering, immersive attraction that features multiple experiences, shopping and themed dining all housed under one roof. Once the brave step into the “abandoned” production warehouse, they’ll discover the heartbeat of its operations: four haunted mazes (another term for 'haunted house') that employ film-level quality sets, just like those found at Halloween Horror Nights. Inside, you’ll step into the worlds of “Universal Monsters,” “Blumhouse’s The Exorcist: Believer,” “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and “Scarecrow: The Reaping.”
Related: Guests Will Notice Major Changes at Universal Orlando
The scale of these is astonishing, and you truly feel like you’ve stepped into a movie. Bringing it to life are professional actors who provide the thrills (and plenty of jump scares). I appreciated the use of both original and beloved horror stories—there's something for both classic horror fans, like "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre," and for fans of new blockbusters, like those from Blumhouse. These haunted houses allowed the ability to dive deeper into these beloved stories. Universal is the film studio that kicked off the horror genre many years ago, and it's a fitting tribute to its decades legacy.
What else is there to do?What surprised me most is that while the haunted house-style attractions were no doubt a draw, there’s plenty of other things to do, making it a multi-hour experience and beefing up the value. Across four themed areas, there’s quick and full-service dining options for when your darkest cravings hit, including a Blumhouse-themed restaurant as well as bar venues with craft cocktails.
In Jack’s Alley, I came face to face with the original (and sinister) Universal character amongst an eerie carnival setting. And for merchandise lovers (guilty!), there’s unique and exclusive Las Vegas-themed items to pick from. There’s a reason to visit again and again as the attraction hosts seasonal offerings, like a Krampus-themed Christmas celebration & Feaster Grievings with a haunting version of the Easter bunny.

VerdictAs someone who has visited Las Vegas dozens of times and tried many of the attractions and entertainment offerings, this is the one I can’t wait to return to. With its groundbreaking nature, this is something that only the masters of horror could pull off to this degree and scale. The AREA15 District is worth a visit alone when heading to Las Vegas. It's a purpose-built immersive entertainment district that also houses Meow Wolf’s acclaimed Omega Mart (another must visit!).
How to VisitLocated minutes from the famed Las Vegas Strip, tickets can be purchased in advance of visit and admission starts at $49. There’s also a special discounted “Fraidy Cat” ticket that includes admission to the venue but skips the haunted houses and a discount for Nevada residents. And since you’re in Vegas, why not splurge on the VIP Experience Package. Perfect for the high roller, this includes perks, like special access and a private host.

'MasterChef's Gordon Ramsay Roasts ‘Half-Naked’ Contestant in Wild Sneak Peek (Exclusive)
MasterChef Season 16 is the "Global Gauntlet" season, meaning the best home cooks from the USA will represent four territories across the globe: Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia-Pacific in hopes of becoming America’s next MasterChef.
Tonight’s audition episode features eight chefs with Asia-Pacific heritages competing for only five aprons. Parade has an exclusive first look when host/judge Gordon Ramsay meets 23-year-old Daniel from Johns Creek, GA, for the first time.
“This is a kitchen, not a gym,” Gordon says when he sees how Daniel is dressed.
An insouciant Daniel responds, “It can be both.”
Spying Daniel’s folks, Gordon says, “Tell your parents to dress you properly.”
Daniels’s mom, Shirley, is thrilled to shake hands with Gordon, and Gordon tells her, “Your son is half naked. My three daughters are watching.”
Daniel quips, “Tell them I say hi.”
“Hold on,” Gordon cautions. “This is not a dating kitchen. It’s a kitchen for cooking. Give me 10 press-ups.”
Daniel gets down and accommodates Gordon, showing off how in shape he is.

Then it’s down to the actual business of cooking. Daniel is making a tofu ricotta ravioli for his audition, one of the first dishes his mom taught him how to make.
“It’s fragrant from those Schezwan peppers. So it’s floral, it’s hot, it’s spicy,” Gordon says.
“I’m making the ravioli from scratch. The dough is resting right now. The filling is in the freezer. It’s going to be amazing,” Daniel says.
But is it going to be amazing enough to earn Daniel a white apron? Tune in to MasterChef: Global Gauntlet tonight at 8 p.m. ET/PT on FOX to find out. Streams next day on Hulu.

‘King of Late Night’ Announced His Retirement 35 Years Ago Today
The late-night entertainment landscape was never the same again after Johnny Carson made a simple, heartbreaking announcement 35 years ago today.
The award-winning host had been entertaining households since he took over the iconic The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson on October 1, 1962, after replacing Jack Paar.
For almost 30 years, viewers tuned in to watch Carson share the stage with a remarkable lineup of guests, including legends like Burt Reynolds, George Carlin, Joan Rivers and Jonathan Winters among many others.
However, on April 22, 1991, the then-65-year-old host announced his retirement from the show.
Following months of speculation about his future on the iconic show, Carson, who had long hinted at his retirement, made it official during an NBC affiliates meeting at Carnegie Hall.

The host, famously dubbed the “King of Late Night,” only informed the public on May 22 of that year that his final appearance would take place in 1992, bringing an end to his 30-year reign in late-night television.
Carson’s announcement sparked a high-stakes competition for his replacement between fellow hosts Jay Leno and David Letterman to succeed him. Eventually, it was Leno who replaced him as the host of The Tonight Show.

— DrPopCulture (@DrPopCultureUSA) April 22, 2025In 1992, the day came for Carson to officially step back. Rather than a celebrity-filled final episode, the studio had no guests and instead highlighted his favorite moments on the show.
At the time, the host sat on a stool as he said his goodbye with a heartfelt closing monologue.
"I can only tell you that it has been an honor and a privilege to come into your homes all these years and entertain you," he said. Adding "And I hope when I find something that I want to do and I think you would like and come back, that you'll be as gracious in inviting me into your home as you have been. I bid you a very heartfelt good night."
The finale episode was reportedly watched by around 50 to 55 million viewers, as cited by the Television Academy, making it one of the highest-rated late-night broadcasts in history.
Ten years after his last appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, Carson passed away on Jan. 23, 2005, at the age of 79. The cause of death was reportedly respiratory arrest due to complications from emphysema.
