On this day in 1994, O.J. Simpson infamously dodged California police for the alleged murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman.
On June 17, Simpson and his childhood friend and fellow football star Al Cowlings led police on a low-speed pursuit in Cowlings' white Ford Bronco. For approximately two hours, Cowlings and Simpson drove across Southern California with police in hot pursuit.
The entire incident was televised live from an overhead telecopter, prompting roughly 95 million viewers to tune in to watch the chase unfold on live TV.
At the height of the chase, 22 helicopters swirled above the pursuit to capture footage of the chase. Given the shocking nature of the news story, news stations interrupted Game 5 of the 1994 NBA Finals to relay the chase, with NBC broadcasting the game and the chase simultaneously.
After Cowlings led police back to Simpson's residence in Brentwood, the two football stars finally surrendered to law enforcement. Simpson was promptly arrested and charged with murder, while Cowlings was charged with aiding a fugitive.
Sometimes described as "the most famous ride on American shores since Paul Revere’s," the event remains one of the most watched moments in American TV history, kicking off a long and highly-publicized news story around Simpson's murder trial.

This installment kicks off with a classic locked-room murder, but the entire theme is political. Bennett told Crime Reads that he wanted to look at "what we do to each other when we feel the rules are getting fuzzy, and what steps we have to take to reassert the law—and why." It is less about flashy magic battles and more about tired cops trying to hold a crumbling society together.
Bureaucracy gets laughs with last year’s winner, Emily Tesh. Her book The Incandescent is a magic school story, but she skips the teenage chosen-one trope to focus on the worst job in the universe: the teacher. Tesh is an educator, and she packed the text with real staff-room inside jokes. Her main character is stuck filling out administrative risk assessments and university applications while trying to keep her students from being eaten by a demonic realm.
Then the list swerves. Nnedi Okorafor’s Death of the Author already won an NAACP Image Award, and now it’s in the running for the Hugo. Adrian Tchaikovsky went the completely opposite direction by getting tired of Earth entirely. For his new book, Shroud, he marooned two corporate contractors on a lightless, high-gravity moon filled with lethal radiation and zero oxygen. Then he introduces the locals. It is brutal, claustrophobic first-contact sci-fi that makes the universe look like a giant death trap.
If you prefer historical friction, Alix E. Harrow is busy burning down standard fantasy tropes. The Everlasting features an academic who time-travels to meet a legendary lady-knight. Except the knight isn’t a noble, chivalrous hero from a Disney movie. Harrow told Shereads that her childhood imagination crashed hard into her actual history degree. The reality? Knights were often just violent enforcers of state power used later as political propaganda.
The absolute longest book on the table belongs to Antonia Hodgson. The Raven Scholar is her first jump into fantasy after writing historical mysteries. It is a 700-page political page turner about seven rivals fighting for a single throne. Someone gets murdered, and the protagonist has to find the killer while being forced to take the dead person's spot in the line of succession.
The ballot is packed with six fan-favorite books that hitting the peak of the genre at the exact same time, and there's no room for internet arguments.

1969 Classic Was the First 'Good Song' This Rock Legend Wrote — Now's It's a Timeless Anthem
He's no stranger to writing hit songs, but CCR legendJohn Fogertydidn't feel like he wrote a "good song" until he came up with "Proud Mary."
The iconic 1969 Creedence Clearwater Revival hit, included on the band's Bayou Country album, became one of the most enduring songs that rock and roll has to offer — and Fogerty knew he had an instant classic on his hands immediately after writing it.
"'Proud Mary' was the first good song I wrote," he said in a clip from NPR's Tiny Desk, noting that it took him less than an hour to write the now-beloved track. "'Proud Mary' was finished and I realized I had done something I'd never done before."
"I mean it really felt different," he said, as he recalled telling himself, "John, you've written a classic."

It was a major commercial and critical success, peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, and it was famously covered by the Queen of Rock and Roll, Tina Turner. Since then, "Proud Mary" has been included Rolling Stone's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time," where it ranks at No. 152.
"You know after writing a whole bunch of lame songs," Fogerty explained, "this song was so much better than anything I'd ever done and I was literally kind of dumbfounded and shocked that it had happened."
He remembered thinking, "Boy, I sure I hope I get to do this again," — and he did. Within the same year, Fogerty and CCR followed up "Proud Mary" and Bayou Country with the Green River album, featuring the timeless track "Bad Moon Rising," plus the band's fourth studio album, Willy and the Poor Boys, which housed more of the band's iconic tracks, like "Fortunate Son" and "Down on the Corner."

Joan Jett & the Blackhearts’ “I Love Rock ’N Roll” remains one of the most recognizable rock songs ever recorded, more than four decades after it ruled the charts and transformed its singer into a global star.
The hard-rock anthem reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March 1982 and stayed there for seven consecutive weeks, becoming the only chart-topping single for Joan Jett & the Blackhearts. The song’s lasting popularity has helped cement its place among the defining tracks of the 1980s and one of rock music’s most enduring anthems.
Originally written by Alan Merrill and Jake Hooker for the English glam rock band The Arrows in 1975, “I Love Rock ’N Roll” had a very different beginning. Despite strong support from its writers, the original version failed to gain significant commercial traction in the United Kingdom.

Merrill later explained the inspiration behind the song during a Songfacts interview.
“That was a knee-jerk response to the Rolling Stones' 'It's Only Rock 'N' Roll.'”
The songwriter believed the chorus had the potential to become a major hit from the start. Reflecting on the song’s structure, Merrill said:
“I had the chorus, which to me sounded like a hit.”
Although The Arrows never enjoyed major chart success with the track, their television performances helped keep the song alive. One of those broadcasts would eventually change rock history.
How Joan Jett Discovered the Future Rock AnthemJoan Jett first encountered “I Love Rock ’N Roll” in 1976 while touring England with The Runaways. She watched The Arrows perform the song on British television and immediately recognized its potential.
Jett wanted The Runaways to record the song, but the band ultimately passed on the opportunity. Years later, after the group disbanded, she revisited the track and recorded an early version in 1979 alongside Sex Pistols members Paul Cook and Steve Jones.
That recording generated limited attention, but Jett and longtime collaborator Kenny Laguna remained convinced the song could become a hit.
At the time, Jett was struggling to establish herself as a solo artist. Major record labels had rejected her work, forcing her and Laguna to build Blackheart Records independently. Once her career began gaining momentum and she secured a deal with Boardwalk Records, the pair finally moved forward with a new recording of “I Love Rock ’N Roll.”
Released as a single on Jan. 20, 1982, the song quickly caught fire across radio stations and the emerging MTV landscape.
Its black-and-white music video became a standout during MTV’s early years. Originally filmed in color, the clip was converted to black and white after Jett disliked the visual results. The decision ultimately helped create the gritty rock-and-roll image that became closely associated with both the song and the singer.
The impact of “I Love Rock ’N Roll” was immediate and historic.
The single climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, remaining there for seven weeks. It also topped charts in multiple countries and became one of the biggest songs of 1982. The Recording Industry Association of America later certified it platinum after sales surpassed two million copies in the United States.

Jennifer Lopez Recalls Terrifying Health Crisis Amidst Rise to Fame: 'I Can't Move, I Can't See'
Most stars will tell you there's some serious drawbacks to their fame and celebrity status, with Jennifer Lopez recently sharing a harrowing health issue she suffered during her rise in stardom back in the early 2000s.
Appearing on a recent installment of the SmartLess podcast, the 56-year-old actress and singer broke down her hectic schedule at the start of the 2000s, as evidenced by her constant work in front of the camera and on stage in front of screaming fans.
"When I was doing Enough, I think I had done like four movies in a row, and I had recorded my second album or something like that, so the JLo album, which was really big," Lopez said. "And I was working, filming every day, as you guys know what that is, you know, all the hours. And then I would go into the studio at night, and then on the weekends, I had junkets or video shoots or whatever. And I remember not clocking that I had worked like 98 days in a row without taking a day off."
"Every time I walk to the set, I start getting a little pitter-patter in my heart," the Hustlers star continued. "it's like rising. And finally, it got to the point I was like, I really feel nervous, and I had the little girl in Enough. And I was like, 'I'm sorry, sweetie, I feel a little weird today.' I said, 'I'm a little tired or something,' and she was like, 'It's okay, You're going to be alright' ... but I wasn't alright."
"I went back to the trailer, and I sat down, and all of a sudden, like, I just couldn't see," Lopez added. "Like, it was almost like I couldn't see clearly, like something just went over my eyes, and I couldn't move. And one of my girlfriends, who was my friend since the second grade, was my assistant... And I said to her, 'Arlene, I can't move. I can't see.' She goes, 'Stop it, Jennifer, you're scaring me.' And I go, 'No, I really can't move. You should get somebody.'"
Fortunately, when Lopez went to the hospital, the doctor revealed that the symptoms were primarily a sign of physical exhaustion, rather than long-lasting health issues.
"We went to the hospital. And I said to the doctor, I said, 'Am I going crazy?' And he said, 'No. You're not crazy,'" Lopez went on to recall.
Savannah Guthrie Absent From 'Today': What We Know
Savannah Guthrie was absent from the Wednesday, June 17 broadcast of Today.
Before viewers could speculate about her absence, Savannah's colleague Craig Melvinshared that she is "on assignment." Sheinelle Jones filled in for Savannah for the morning.
Savannah, 54, previously stepped away from Today back in February after her mother, Nancy Guthrie, went missing. Authorities believe that Nancy was abducted from her Arizona home in the middle of the night on Feb. 1. Despite receiving thousands of tips, a suspect has not yet been identified and Nancy's whereabouts are still unknown.
Savannah returned to Today in April. Prior to her return, she sat down with her colleague and dear friend Hoda Kotb to talk about her mom's disappearance. She also explained her decision to return to work, despite her mother's case being unsolved.
"I think it's part of my purpose right now. I want to smile. And when I do, it will be real. And my joy will be my protest. My joy will be my answer. And being there is joyful," Savannah told Kotb.
"I consider this my family, my greater family, and when times are hard, you want to be with your family and I want to be with my family. And so, I don't know if I can do it. I don't know if I'll belong anymore, but I would like to try," she added.
Since returning to Today two months ago, Savannah has continued to balance her on-air responsibilities with occasional absences as she does her best to manage her schedule amid ongoing personal challenges.
1964 Classic Rock Hit Was Recorded in 5 Minutes
“Come a Little Closer” was a classic rock song from Jay and the Americans. It reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 after its release in 1964, making it the band’s highest-charting single. More recently, it was featured in The Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 during an iconic arrow scene. It was also used during Gilmore Girls and Ray Donovan.
When speaking about the creation of the song in an interview with Carl Wiser, Kenny Vance, who was a founding member of the band, said, “This was recorded in the last, probably five minutes of a session where we were trying to record something else that we spent the whole session on. In those days, the session ran for three hours, I think the musicians got $65 for a three-hour session. They didn’t want to go overtime, and they had recorded this one song, and they needed a flipside, and they said OK, boom, let’s do it. And we recorded it, and that’s it.”
Jay and the Americans achieved great success since starting in 1959. They were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2002. They even opened for The Beatles and The Rolling Stones during their first American tours.
When speaking about opening for The Beatles with Boca Magazine, Vance said, “When we got there, I was shocked to discover that The Beatles actually knew who we were. We had had hit records in England, and they were friends with the Ronettes, and we were friends with the Ronettes, and they had told them about us. They were young kids as I was a young kid, and there was a certain camaraderie—'I’m in a group, you’re in a group.’ There wasn’t a big separation in those days. We were contemporaries of theirs, and they accepted us as that.”

Jay and the Americans released over 10 albums. Some other notable songs from the band include “She Cried” and “Cara Mia.” They also performed a popular cover of “This Magic Moment,” which was originally by The Drifters.
Despite their success, Jay and the Americans officially parted ways in 1973.

'80s Rock Legend Shares Major Health Update Ahead of Tour
An ’80s rock legend is opening up about a major health milestone as he prepares to return to the stage. Jon Bon Jovi, the frontman of Bon Jovi, opened up about his recovery in a new interview with People magazine, revealing he is now "fully recovered" following vocal cord surgery.
"I’d often joked and said the only thing that’s ever been up my nose was my finger. I never did anything to hurt the cords; I didn’t have any excesses. I’m a trained vocalist. I’ve practiced the craft,” Bon Jovi told the outlet. “So when a doctor had to explain to me that one of the cords was literally atrophying, it was confusing."
Following surgery and plenty of physical therapy that included exercising his voice, Bon Jovi is ready to get back out there.
"I’m fully recovered. It was longer than I’d ever expected, but it had to be right. We never lost faith," he said.

Now, following the "disruptive" November 2025 debut of Simply NKD Doritos and Cheetos comes the new Doritos Dinamita Simply NKD Chile Limón.
Doritos Dinamita to Join the New Simply NKD Chip LineAs the line's name implies, the new Simply NKD Dinamita takes the iconic rolled chip that fans know and love for its "layered heat-filled flavor experience," and strips it of all artificial dyes and flavors.
