The Highly Anticipated Sequel to a Cult Classic ‘90s Movie Has Been Quietly Scrapped by Peacock

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 4:07pm

Alicia Silverstone was set to reprise her role of Cher Horowitz from Clueless in a sequel series. Details about the plot were not revealed, but it would have picked up around 30 years after the events of the original film. Unfortunately, Varietyhas reported that the project is no longer in development at Peacock.

View this post on Instagram

In April 2025, the project was originally announced by Deadline. Silverstone posted about it on her Instagram with the caption, “Totally buggin’… in the best way.” In August, she gave an update on the development during an interview with Today, saying, “I think we’re going to try really hard. The goal is to make it honor what everyone loves about Clueless and Cher. So we want to honor that, but also bring something fresh and new to it. I’m confident that we’ll be able to do that, but we’re in baby stages right now."

Silverstone was attached as an executive producer with Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage, and Jordan Weiss writing. Writer-director Amy Heckerling and producer Robert Lawrence from the original film were also attached as executive producers.

This is not the first time that a Clueless series has been scrapped by Peacock. In 2020, they were developing another show about Cher’s best friend, Dionne, who was played by Stacey Dash.

When the Clueless IP is taken back out to buyers, it is expected to generate a lot of interest since it has such a large fanbase. The original film, which was released in 1995, was a major box office hit that has only grown in popularity over the years. The story, which was loosely based on Emma by Jane Austen, followed a wealthy teenager who tried to do good deeds.

The film inspired an ABC television adaptation that was released in 1996 and ran until 1999. It was a half-hour comedy series with Rachel Blanchard playing Cher, and Dash returning as Dionne.

Although Silverstone was not in the TV series, she has reprised her role as Cher over the years. She wore her classic yellow plaid skirt and jacket during Lip Sync Battle in 2018 and appeared as Cher during a 2023 Super Bowl commercial.

Dianna Russini Tweet From 2021 Resurfaces, Fueling Mike Vrabel Affair Rumors

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 4:06pm

An old tweet from former Athletic reporter Dianna Russini is fueling affair rumors between her and New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel.

Last week, photos published in the New York Post showed Russini and Vrabel holding hands and hugging at a luxury hotel in Arizona.

After the pictures went viral, Russini and Vrabel both called the photos "misleading" and vehemently denied rumors of an affair. The journalist has been married to Kevin Goldschmidt since 2020 while the football coach and his wife Jennifer have been married since 1999.

Russini's Athletic editor Steven Ginsberg also came to their defense, telling NBC News that the photos lacked "essential context."

“These were public interactions in front of many people,” Ginsberg said. “Dianna is a premier journalist covering the NFL and we’re proud to have her at The Athletic.”

Nevertheless, Russini resigned from the publication on Apr. 14, and Vrabel announced on Thursday, Apr. 23 that he would be seeking counseling in the wake of the scandal.

Later on Apr. 23, Page Six released photos that appeared to show Russini and Vrabel kissing at a bar in New York City in March 2020—seemingly confirming the alleged affair and sparking questions about the timeline of the pair's relationship.

Shortly after the bombshell photos were released, fans found a tweet from Russini's dating back to 2021—referencing her now 4-year-old son who is also named Michael.

"Keep looking at my almost 4 day old son Michael while trying to figure out who are the best Michaels to ever play and coach in the NFL?," Russini wrote on X at the time.

Four years later—fans are now viewing the post in an entirely new lens.

"This did not age well," wrote one user. "In hindsight we really should've picked up on this quicker." said another.

"She named her son Mike?? Omggg man," added a third. "This is diabolical." said a fourth.

Also on Apr. 23, TMZ obtained a photo of the pair at a casino in Biloxi, Mississippi shortly before midnight on Jan. 31, 2024.

1971 Rock Hit Inspired by The Beatles Ranked Best No. 1 Song That Year

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 3:58pm

Rod Stewart’s “Maggie May” was just named the best No. 1 song from 1971, but the true story that inspired it is even more surprising. So, let’s give it a closer look, shall we?

An autobiographical tune, “Maggie May,” is about the singer losing his virginity at age 16. In a 2019 interview on 60 Minutes Australia, the rock icon elaborates, saying the coital encounter was with a woman considerably older than he was and took place at the Beaulieu Jazz Festival in the ’60s.

🎬 SIGN UP for Parade’s Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬

“She dragged me into her tent, and this was the middle of the afternoon, and the deed was done,” the rocker, now 81, said. “I was a teenager; she looked like she was in her late 30s. So, she’s well under the grass now.”

In his 2012 memoir, Rod: The Autobiography, he addresses the woman again, writing, “How much older, I can’t tell you — but old enough to be highly disappointed by the brevity of the experience.”

The revelation tracks. With lyrics like, “You led me away from home just to save you from being alone,” and, “The mornin’ sun when it’s in your face really shows your age,” the story Stewart shares is right there in the song. With the truth in focus, though, the song becomes much more profound.

“As soon as you listen to [‘Maggie May’] in the right light, at the right time — say, the morning before you head off on holiday, for instance — the song suddenly seems like a rare piece of artistic perfection,” Far Out Magazine, which ranks “Maggie May” No. 1, writes.

The outlet also touts George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord,” Sly and the Family Stone’s “Family Affair,” Janis Joplin’s “Me and Bobby McGee,” and Paul McCartney’s “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey” as standout No. 1's from 1971.

As for Stewart’s title, it has nothing to do with the woman at the jazz fest and everything to do with The Fab Four. According to Culture Sonar, Stewart was inspired by The Beatles1969 track “Maggie Mae,” a cover of a traditional Liverpool folk song about a pickpocketing lady of the night.

According to American Songwriter, Stewart co-wrote the original composition with Streamhammer guitarist Martin Quittenton, whose acoustic guitar features in the song. Stewart’s Faces bandmates, Ronnie Wood and Ian McLagan, contributed the electric and string guitar, bass, and organ, while Lindisfarne’s Ray Jackson laid down the signature mandolin sound.

Released in May 1971 as a single off Every Picture Tells a Story, “Maggie Mae” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in October. It became the artist’s first major solo hit, spending five weeks in the top spot before being bumped by Cher’s “Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves.” The track also boosted the album to the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200, replacing Carole King’s monumental Tapestry.

“Maggie May” was a life-changing, pivotal moment for Stewart in more ways than one.

Justin Theroux Reveals How Rescue Dog, Kuma, is the 'Perfect' Big Sister

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 3:58pm

Becoming a big brother or sister for the first time is quite the transition for most one-time only children. You go from getting all the attention from your parents to suddenly being required to share them with a whole other person. Fortunately, Kuma, Justin Theroux's 8-year-old Pit Bull mix, is already adjusting well.

On April 18, the actor and his wife, Nicole Brydon Bloom, jointly posted a photo of a shirtless Theroux cuddling with their 3-week-old infant boy. Several days later, Theroux appeared on TODAY to talk about welcoming his first baby while Kuma lay at his feet wearing a "big sister" bandana. TheDevil Wears Prada 2 star said that when it came to being a big sister, she was doing "perfect."

"Really perfect," he continued. "Gentle. Her energy is great." He confirmed that Kuma hadn't shown any jealousy for the new baby, either.

"She's so sweet, honestly, she reads the room," he added. "We bring him into the room, and she'll just sort of post up near us. Keep her eye on the door and make sure no one comes in."

Since adopting Kuma in 2018, the two have been inseparable. She regularly accompanies him to interviews, red-carpet premieres, and even while filming.

"She was a rescue from Texas," he explained on The Ellen Show in 2021. "After Hurricane Harvey, I was driving through Texas, and there's a great shelter that I stop at whenever I'm there called Austin Pets Live! And they knew of a shelter called A Chance to Bloom, and I went and met with her, and we fell in love."

One of the earliest photos of Kuma that the Beetlejuice 2 star posted showed her covered in mange with crusty eyes. After she was fully healed and ready to leave the shelter, Theroux brought her back to New York City.

Since Sept. 16, 2021, Kuma has had her own Instagram account. Like most pet owners who adore their furbabies, it's filled with adorable photos of Kuma sleeping, cuddling, swimming, and even tucked beneath his legs on an airplane.

On March 19, 2025, Theroux and Bloom tied the knot. To no one's surprise, Kuma was prominently featured in the couple's wedding photos.

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 3:55pm

Olympic gymnastics icon Simone Biles is once again showing support for her husband, Jonathan Owens, after his latest NFL move, this time with a short but eye-catching message that quickly drew attention online.

Owens, who recently signed with the Indianapolis Colts, shared a series of training photos on Instagram as he prepares for his ninth season in the league. Alongside the images, the NFL safety kept his caption simple, writing: “Year 9.”

Within moments, Biles responded in the comments with a playful and supportive note: “you look goooood in these colors 🥵🥵”.

Owens’ move to the Colts marks another chapter in his professional football career. After spending the 2025 season with the Chicago Bears, where he recorded 19 tackles in 17 games, the safety signed a one-year deal during the offseason.

The Colts now become the fifth NFL team Owens has been part of since entering the league in 2018. His journey has included stints with the Arizona Cardinals, Houston Texans and Green Bay Packers before landing in Indianapolis.

Biles has been vocal about her excitement over the move in recent weeks. In an earlier Instagram tribute following his signing, she wrote: “Excited to call Indy home this upcoming football season 💙 Beyond proud of you Jonathan Owens! Keep defeating the odds, I love you.”

Biles and Owens’ relationship has been widely followed by fans, especially on social media where they often share glimpses of their life together. The couple first connected on the dating app in March 2020 and quickly built a strong connection during the pandemic.

Their relationship continued to grow, leading to an engagement in February 2022. The pair officially tied the knot in April 2023 during an intimate courthouse ceremony in Texas, followed by a larger celebration in Cabo San Lucas with family and friends.

Since then, they have frequently supported each other’s careers, whether it’s Biles cheering from the sidelines during NFL games or Owens celebrating his wife’s achievements on the global gymnastics stage.

Biles remains one of the most decorated gymnasts in history, with multiple Olympic and World Championship medals, while Owens continues working to expand his role in the NFL.

Despite their demanding schedules, both athletes have made it clear that their relationship remains a top priority.

The moment also comes as Biles remains active internationally, recently attending events like the Laureus World Sports Awards in Madrid, where she continues to draw global attention.

Even with packed schedules and major career moves, the couple’s social media interactions continue to resonate with fans, offering small but meaningful glimpses into their relationship.

1987 No. 1 Hit Ranked Among the 'Top Rock Songs' of All Time Became a Timeless Anthem

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 3:48pm

Despite being 40 years old, Bon Jovi's 1986 song, "Livin' on a Prayer," off the band's third studio album, Slippery When Wet, has remained beloved.

On April 22, Ultimate Classic Rock ranked Bon Jovi's classic hit, which went number 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 in February 1987, as the 78th top rock song of all time.

Jon Bon Jovi Discussed the Lasting Popularity of 'Livin' on a Prayer'

In a 2024 interview with Gold Radio, Bon Jovi's singer and frontman, Jon Bon Jovi, discussed the song's lasting popularity. He said that when he, Richie Sambora, and Desmond Child were first writing "Livin' on a Prayer," he thought it was "just another good song to put on the pile."

Bon Jovi, now 64, said that he realized that he and his bandmates might have a hit on their hands when they began rehearsing it.

"When we went to rehearsal that took on a life of its own. Because we were aware that we needed to develop a line and we were thinking of 'Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch' and like Motown stuff like that," explained Bon Jovi in the 2024 interview.

Bon Jovi then said he believed the band came up with the song's iconic key change during the pre-production rehearsal for "Livin' on a Prayer."

Desmond Child Revealed the Inspiration Behind the Hit Bon Jovi Song

While speaking to Inside Blackbird in 2025, Child shared some insight into how "Livin' on a Prayer" was written. The songwriter said that Bon Jovi had told him he had wanted to "write a song about a working-class couple that's struggling." Child said that when he put pen to paper, he had his relationship with his girlfriend in mind. He explained that for many years, he "would stay home writing songs and she was working as a waitress."

Child also said that Bon Jovi was inspired by "people that he remembered from high school that were married very young and struggled," while Sambora had been thinking about his parents while co-writing the song.

"We brought that all together into this one song that to this day means so much to so many generations of people," said Child in the 2025 interview.

'Matlock' Stars Tease 'Heartbreaking' Finale and Dramatic Season 3 Reset (Exclusive)

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 3:46pm

The critically acclaimed reboot of Matlock, starring Kathy Bates as Matty Matlock, wraps up its second season tonight with a two-hour finale that will bring the Wellbrexa storyline to an explosive conclusion.

“No matter what you predict will happen, it’s still heartbreaking,” Skye P. Marshall, who stars as Olympia Lawrence, Matty’s boss and friend, told Parade exclusively at CBS Fest. “No matter what you predict, it will still break your heart because in order to solve this crime, it's going to cost every single character a lot, either personally or professionally.”

The finale will guest star Gina Rodriguez in a key role, but it’s Matty, Olympia and Julian Markston (Jason Ritter) who move the action along with stellar performances, fighting up until the end to try to bring justice to those who were damaged by the pharmaceutical company that covered up the devastating side effects of its opioid drug Wellbrexa and the legal team that aided them.

“I think the beautiful Quran throughout our show has been a belief system in trusting justice over your own fears and doubt,” Marshall continued. “Every single character has been scared to accomplish something, especially Matlock, whether it's her marriage or whether it’s justice for her daughter or justice for her family.”

The ending is a twist that showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman and her staff of writers came up with that will surprise viewers. And the finale may require a tissue or two, as it is very emotional.

“I hope that it encourages audience members because it is a real pandemic when it comes to opioids; it’s a real issue being able to fight for justice,” Marshall added. “To see a senior citizen infiltrate a huge law firm and pull this off, where is she going to go next? Is she going back in the garden, or is she going to keep continuing her career? And I love that for women over [a certain] age.”

Related: Matlock Star Skye P. Marshall Promises Jaw-Dropping Season 2 Finale: ‘It Is Going to Knock You Out’ (Exclusive)

It was revealed back in the very first episode that Matty Matlock is actually Madeline Kingston, a retired attorney, who is married and raising the son of her late daughter, who died from a Wellbrexa overdose. The truth is known only to a handful of people – Olympia and Julian among them – so the question, as raised by Marshall, is what happens next.

“It’s been really fun to watch these characters grow, especially seeing Matty's journey with these people, who when she started this mission, the three of us were her public enemy No. 1,” Ritter told Parade, referring to Julian, Olympia and Senior (Beau Bridges), who is Julian's father but also head of the law firm of Jacobson Moore. "She didn't know which of us, but it's been really lovely to watch Kathy do her beautiful performance and work through all of her stuff, to be reminded that everybody is a full person who has strengths, weaknesses and foibles. She can be driven pretty crazy by Julian, but still allows him a little bit of grace.”

Leah Lewis, who plays Sarah, tells Parade, “It's interesting because by the end of Season 2, each character had a reason for why they are the way they are, for what they're doing and what their goal is. By the time you get to the end of Season 2, everyone's 'why' has now changed. Even think when you look at someone like Sarah, who once would have incredibly jumped at a chance to be at Olympia's side right away, for her to even take a step back and wonder, ‘Is this right for me?’ It's very different. I think that mirrors how every character involved is questioning things as a result of interacting with each other.”

The time required to create a new mystery is the reason given as to why Matlock will not be returning until midseason on CBS’s Fall 2026-2027 schedule. It will allow Urman and her team time to craft the next phase of Matty’s life.

“It’s great that they have all this this time,” Ritter says. “It’s great that they have time to reset. Everything is going to be different in Season 3. We've seen in between Season 1 and Season 2, you give these writers a little bit of time, they can do a whole lot with it.”

Matlock airs Thursday nights at 9 p.m. ET/PT on CBS. Streams next day on CBS.

14 MLB Stars' Favorite Pre-Game Meals

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 3:40pm

There really might not be a better example of science and superstition blurring together than sports. Whether it's at a professional or amateur level, anyone who's ever prepared for a game knows how much a consistent routine can affect performance. Everything from what you eat to how you train, along with all the little superstitions that come into play, can make a big difference, especially when you're on a team or have a championship on the line.

Baseball, in particular, has seen it all, from peak physical specimens to players with more average builds, and food has always played a big part in the culture. Even with access to trainers, nutritionists and every performance tool imaginable, MLB players still have a surprising amount of freedom when it comes to what they eat.

😋😋SIGN UP to get delicious recipes, handy kitchen hacks & more in our daily Pop Kitchen newsletter🍳🍔

But in the hours before a big game, routines tend to take over, and in some cases, those habits stick for years. Here's a look at 14 MLB players and their go-to pre-game meals.

What Do MLB Players Eat Before a Game?1. Aaron Judge—Chopped Cheese

As a career Yankee right fielder, it only makes sense that Aaron Judge would choose a New York City bodega staple as his go-to pre-game meal. Popularized in corner stores that are a large part of New Yorkers' daily routine, the chopped cheese is made with ground beef, melted cheese and grilled onions and is typically served on a hero or roll with lettuce, tomato and condiments.

2. Manny Machado—Protein Shake or Tacos @MannyMachado goes oppo taco for his first home run of the season!
by u/Jack_029 in mlb

"I don't really do too much for pre-game," San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado told reporters. "Maybe a protein shake or something light. Maybe a few tacos? Nothing too stuffing." And when asked how his answer today compares to what he said two years ago, when Chick-fil-A was his go-to pre-game, Machado admits it weighs him down too much, saying, "We gotta try to stay light, we're getting older, you know?"

3. Nolan Arenado—White Rice with Steak or Chicken, or a PB&J View this post on Instagram

Third baseman Nolan Arenado takes a classic approach to his meals before hitting the field with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He keeps it simple with white rice and either chicken or steak, or sometimes just a humble PB&J, prioritizing his training routine above all else.

4. Didi Gregorius—Salmon, White Rice and Avocado View this post on Instagram

While things might have changed slightly since his original answer in 2017, former Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius told reporters once that a key part of his pre-game routine is salmon, white rice and avocado. It's a simple, filling combination that provides all the sustenance you need before taking the field.

5. Adam Wainwright—PB&J

When asked what his pre-game meal consisted of, former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright didn't hesitate: "I have a PB&J one hour before every game…since 2005." He then corrects himself, jokingly, "Really, since I was about 5."

6. Miles Mikolas—Cheeseburger, Fries and a Coca-Cola @batboysbaseball

What’s your go-to pregame meal? 🤔 The amount of “chicken and rice” answers we got last year was crazy 😂but we kept asking it for the interesting answers like these 😋 Do you think you could fast before games like @toneill9 ?😳⚾️ How will the Cardinals do in 2023? #diet #meal #athlete #baseballboys #homerun

♬ original sound - Bat Boys

Harking back to previous eras where meal prep, nutrition and being in tip-top shape weren't necessarily trending across the league, Miles Mikolas treats his pre-game meal like a post-game celebration. In an interview with @batboysbaseball, the Washington Nationals pitcher says he prefers "a nice big cheeseburger and some French fries, and I wash it down with an ice cold Coke."

7. Mark Canha—Spaghetti and Meatballs or Minestrone View this post on Instagram

Known to document his meals on Instagram via @bigleaguefoodie, Oakland A's player and current Texas Rangers outfielder and first baseman Mark Canha is no stranger to a good pre-game meal. He's said his main rule is to keep it "nutritionally sound," with easy carbs and protein, so as not to have "digestive problems when trying to hit a 90 mph fastball." That said, he still prioritizes comfort, which is why his go-to is spaghetti and meatballs, with minestrone as a close second.

8. Jeff Francoeur—PB&J @pureathleteinc

No stranger to a high-performance meal plan, former Atlanta Braves outfielder Jeff Francoeur knows the importance of keeping things low in fat and high in carbs. While that usually means some sort of rice and protein combo, followed by a granola snack an hour or two before the game, Francoeur has famously admitted he prefers a classic PB&J to get him right before taking the field.

9. Nestor Cortes—Scrambled Eggs, Bacon, Pancakes and Sometimes Watermelon

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/bOkCYBaSGME

San Diego Padres left-handed pitcher Nestor Cortes takes a more cautious approach to pre-game meals, starting with a full breakfast so he can go without eating until after the game.

"Everything I feel like I like isn't probably good for my outing, like a burger," he tells @batboysbaseball. "I'll probably sprinkle in some watermelon before game time, but definitely a big breakfast." That usually means scrambled eggs, bacon and one chocolate chip pancake.

10. Tyler O'Neill—Does Not Eat Before Games

Tyler O'Neill, on the other hand, takes a different approach to his pre-game ritual, telling @batboysbaseball that he's a "big faster," saying that he doesn't like to eat at all before the game. "I want to feel hungry out there, and feel lean and feel fast," the Baltimore Orioles outfielder says. Instead, O'Neill focuses on his pre-game workout routine to get him right before hitting the field.

11. Ryan O'Hearn—Steak and Rice @justinayersbaseball

Taking cues from his fellow peers across the league, Pittsburgh Pirates' own Ryan O'Hearn told @batboysbaseball he prefers something "simple" like steak and rice. "Nothing crazy," he says, "nothing too hard on the stomach." And when asked how long before the game he eats, O'Hearn says he usually goes right when he gets in, about an hour before first pitch.

12. Derek Jeter—PB&J

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/5RHnKgFxYck

In a 2018 interview, New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter admitted that "people are always surprised" by his pre-game meal routine. "I eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches an hour before the game. I don't like to eat anything too heavy before I play, so PB&J is perfect." And when asked by @betmgm to name two clubhouse essentials, he quickly answered "music and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches."

13. Wade Boggs—Chicken

Known as the "Chicken Man" for his long-running superstition, Hall of Famer Wade Boggs built one of baseball's most famous pre-game routines around fried chicken, eating it before every game as part of a strict ritual. The habit became so consistent that it turned into part of his lore, with Boggs leaning heavily into the idea that routine and repetition were as important as anything else on the field.

14. Babe Ruth—Hot dogs, Coca-Cola and Larger-Than-Life Eating Habits

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/ol5Y12TLgFk

A true legend in every sense of the word, Babe Ruth is often remembered just as much for his larger-than-life appetite as his dominance on the field. Reports of his eating habits are borderline unbelievable by today's standards, with dozens of hot dogs, an equal number of Coca-Cola bottles, alcohol and massive meals said to be part of his regular daily routine.

As far as pre-game "diets" go, Ruth's approach feels almost impossible to imagine today, yet somehow he managed to eat his way through an array of heavy meals throughout the day while still building one of the most iconic careers in baseball history. If all the rumors are true, Babe could have given Joey Chestnut a run for his money.

Why Are Pre-Game Meals Important for Baseball Players?

Pre-game meals matter a lot more than the average person might think, especially in a sport like baseball, where games can stretch for hours on end with short bursts of activity in between periods of rest. What a player decides to eat leading up to first pitch can directly impact energy levels, focus and overall performance when it counts. According to experts, the goal isn't to eat heavy or overly complicated meals, but players who have dialed in their routine tend to rely on carbohydrates and some form of lean protein to fuel energy and support muscle function throughout the game.

That said, timing and consistency make a big difference in how a player's pre-game meal works for them. Most players aim to eat a full meal about three to four hours before the game, with a light snack closer to first pitch if needed. What they eat tends to vary from player to player and while there are some common threads, plenty of habits still come down to superstition, repetition and good old-fashioned stubbornness.

Do MLB Players Follow Strict Diets During the Season?

The short answer? Not exactly. While nutrition has become a much bigger focus across the league in recent years, fans will tell you there is no one diet you can point to that every MLB player is expected to follow. Teams now have nutritionists, personal chefs and fully stocked clubhouses with healthier options than ever before, but these days most players understand how important diet is when it comes to performing at a high level over a long season.

At the end of the day, what a player eats is still very much up to them, which is why you see both expected similarities and some pretty wild inconsistencies when it comes to pre-game meals. Some players stick to strict routines, cutting out processed foods and dialing in their intake, while others keep it simple and go with whatever feels right that day. There are common themes like protein and carb-heavy meals, but just as often you'll see guys sticking with the same simple meals purely out of habit, comfort or straight-up superstition.

What Foods Do Athletes Avoid Before a Game?

While healthy eating habits go a long way for any athlete, there's not really a one-size-fits-all rule when it comes to foods to avoid before a game. Your high school coach might have you load up on spaghetti the night before as a carb load, but most players still steer clear of fast food, fried foods or anything overly rich that might sit in your stomach for too long. Foods high in sugar can also be risky, since they might give you a quick burst of energy but can just as easily lead to a crash not long after.

In most cases, it really just comes down to how your body processes what you eat. Everyone is different, but heavy meals can leave you feeling sluggish, bloated or uncomfortable once you start moving around, which is the last thing you want heading into a game. That's why many players stick to foods they know work for them and avoid experimenting too much before the first pitch.

How Have Pre-Game Meals Changed in Modern Baseball?

As seen in the players listed above, pre-game meals in modern baseball have evolved significantly over the years. While today's players have access to top nutrition professionals and carefully planned meal options, there's still a wide range of approaches to what they like to eat before a game.

Legendary stories of players like Babe Ruth and Wade Boggs might inspire an up-and-comer to try and live up to those larger-than-life eating habits, while most players today stick to clean, balanced meals built around protein and carbs. From there, plenty of variation still exists, with some players sticking to longtime habits from their formative years or even skipping eating altogether depending on how they want to feel.

This mix of old-school routines and modern nutrition is part of what makes baseball so special. You still have players relying on classics like PB&Js, steak and rice or the occasional fast food meal, alongside smarter choices like lean proteins, shakes and lighter meals. Compared to earlier eras, there's no doubt more awareness of performance and recovery, and how they connect to what players eat, but personal preference, tradition and good old-fashioned superstition still play a major role in what ends up on the plate before first pitch.

When discussing the central love story in Atmosphere and why she ultimately chose to focus on two women falling in love, Reid has said: "Because there are a lot of different sides to me and it felt like, creatively, it was time to indulge this one. And also, because no one is going to tell me that love isn’t love. I wanted to write a big, bold sweeping love story. I think I wanted to break my own heart, a little bit."

In 1980, space-obsessed Joan Goodwin is selected from a pool of thousands of applicants for Houston’s Johnson Space Center to be one of the first women to enter the highly competitive Space Shuttle Program. Previously an astronomer and physics professor, Joan enters the program with dozens of other exceptional candidates: Top Gun pilot Hank Redmond and scientist John Griffin, mission specialist Lydia Danes, warmhearted Donna Fitzgerald, and Vanessa Ford, a magnetic and mysterious aeronautical engineer.

Set between a crisis occurring in 1984 and the lives of Joan and her fellow potential astronauts in the earlier years, the novel oscillates between the unlikely friends and lovers preparing for their first flights, while Joan discovers passion and a romance she never could have imagined leading her to question everything she thinks she knows about her place in the world.

What's next from Reid and Atmosphere?

Following the critical and commercial acclaim to Atmosphere, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck of Captain Marvel have been tapped to adapt the novel for film. The project is currently in development with no official release date as of yet.

Taylor Jenkins Reid has reportedly finished her next novel, a "bad girl road trip" to potentially be released some time in 2027.

I Had a Problem With Hallmark’s Mahjong Movie—Until I Understood This

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 3:29pm

When I saw Hallmark was doing a movie about mahjong, I raised my arms in exultation: "Finally! A movie about my culture and my people!" Sadly, that moment didn't last very long. After I learned more about All's Fair in Love & Mahjong, I noticed that it features a predominantly white cast—with actors of color in the plucky supporting roles. On top of that, only one Asian—Yan-Kay Crystal Lowe, who is of Chinese and Scottish descent—was cast in the film.

So naturally, I was conflicted about it. One of my favorite networks is doing a movie that involves mahjong. But why are there barely any Asians in it? I had to look into it a little more and was surprised at what I found.

🎬SIGN UP for Parade’s Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬

Why Hallmark’s Mahjong Movie Feels Personal

I grew up watching my elders play mahjong and would often fall asleep to the sound of mahjong tiles being swirled around on the table then being stacked in rows. When I chatted with Lowe, we laughed about the fact that we shared similar memories of falling asleep on the floor while our aunties and uncles played mahjong late into the night, their coats and jackets thrown on the floor to create a makeshift bed so we could sleep. "I loved falling asleep under the table as my grandma and aunts played mahjong on a bed made of jackets," Lowe said. "It was something that spoke to me when I read the script. The clicking noise of the tiles was so soothing."

That "chattering" sound of the tiles being shuffled had a soothing quality to it. As loud as it could be, it still lulled me to sleep. In fact, the word "mahjong" translates to "sparrow" in Chinese and is a reference to the avian quality of the sound the tiles make.

What Is 'All's Fair in Love & Mahjong' About?

All's Fair in Love & Mahjong stars Fiona Gubelmann as Ronni, a beloved school nurse and devoted mom who hosts a longstanding mahjong game with her dear friends—Shelley (Lowe), Carly (Tamera Mowry-Housley) and Melissa (Melissa Peterman). When Ronni becomes an empty nester, her whole world tilts: Her daughter leaves for college, her work hours are cut and her ex insists it’s time to sell the home she’s poured her heart into.

But a chance moment at a school fundraiser not only reveals her unexpected gift for teaching mahjong, but also sparks a connection with Ben (Paul Campbell)—a charming contractor whose family needs a little healing of its own. As Ronni brings community after community together through the game she loves, she discovers that sometimes the hand you're dealt changes everything. With her future in the balance, Ronni must learn to bet on herself…and maybe on love, too.

The Casting That Sparked Questions

Did Hallmark miss an opportunity here? At first, I thought so. While Hallmark has produced a few projects featuring Asian casts (Sweet Pecan Summer, Christmas at the Golden Dragon, Christmas with the Singhs), the network seems to have shied away from diversity in recent years. Back in 2022, the media company touted a line of movies under their Mahogany brand geared toward the African-American community. They produced a handful of movies under this banner, but the last Mahogany movie premiered in 2023.

Is this another example of whitewashing? One might assume so. But after learning about the film and its origins, I realized the story is more nuanced than it first appears. The version of mahjong played in the film is American mahjong—a distinctly different game from the one I grew up watching.

What Is American Mahjong?

American mahjong is a different game from the traditional version many think of when the term "mahjong" comes to mind. Unlike the version played in The Joy Luck Club, American mahjong has its own set of rules, with 152 tiles (including eight jokers). Tiles must be matched to specific hand patterns found on an annual scorecard issued by the National Mah Jongg League. These patterns change every year. If you're curious to learn, there are plenty of tutorials on YouTube to get you started.

Is This Actually Whitewashing? It’s Not That Simple

When the film was first announced, many were quick to jump on the whitewashing bandwagon—including Entertainment Weekly, which ran a piece about how tone-deaf the announcement felt. I admit—that was my first reaction, too. But as I learned more about the film, I realized its underlying themes are similar to many of Hallmark's core features—love, romance, family and friendship. Just as a cruise ship brings the characters together in Missing the Boat, mahjong tiles connect them in All's Fair in Love & Mahjong.

Hallmark is jumping on the mahjong bandwagon, which has slowly become a global phenomenon over the decades. What's sweet about this film is it's a bit of a love letter to the producer's wife, who is an expert on American mahjong and teaches hundreds of people how to play. Joel S. Rice has produced multiple films for Hallmark—including the Signed, Sealed, Delivered series—and this film was inspired by his wife's passion for the game. Ronni Rice—known as Marvelous Mrs. Mahj in American mahjong circles—teaches classes in the sport both online and in person.

Where I Land (For Now)

I've decided to reserve judgment until I actually see the film on May 9, but I do hope that Hallmark will look into making more films that embrace various Asian cultures—including Chinese, Taiwanese and Korean. And hey, this writer is happy to consult!

All's Fair in Love & Mahjong premieres on Saturday, May 9 at 8 p.m. ET on Hallmark Channel and will be available to stream the next day on Hallmark+.

The Costco swimsuit features a ruffle sleeve design that adds a soft, feminine touch without being overly complicated. Inside, it includes underwire for support along with removable cups so wearers can adjust the fit. 'Days of Our Lives' Star Reveals How Motherhood Has Transformed Her Character Ahead of a Shocking Return

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 3:05pm

Days of Our Lives is bringing back Joy Wesley (AlexAnn Hopkins) for another run, and this time, the character is taking on a new full-time role: motherhood.

When Joy was last seen in Salem, she had just learned she was pregnant with Alex Kriakis (Robert Scott Wilson) child. Instead of telling him, Joy chose to step aside, allowing Alex to reunite with Stephanie (Abigail Klein) while she left town to raise her baby on her own.

Now a year later, Joy returns to Salem with her daughter and comes face-to-face with Alex again, but what she wants from the reunion remains unclear.

Hopkins recently spoke with Stephanie Sloane of TV Insider, discussing her return to Salem, what drew her back, and how Joy has evolved since her first stint.

Discussing the character’s evolution, Hopkins said, “Joy really felt a lot younger then than she does now.”

She added that motherhood has changed Joy significantly. “It has made her a bit more grown.”

Hopkins explained that, during her first stint, Joy was still searching for direction. She arrived in Salem hoping to land a role on the rebooted Body and Soul soap-within-the-soap, sparking a flirtation with director Johnny DiMera (Carson Boatman) and a brief relationship with Alex. But after the show’s cancellation, Joy was left without a clear path.

“She looking for somewhere to belong and wearing these different hats to see who her community was, who she could trust, what kind of job she even wanted,” Hopkins said.

But things are different now, the actress shares how Joy “really has a sense of purpose, which is this baby.”

That shift has changed how Joy presents herself. “She comes across as much more womanly now, and I’ve been really enjoying being able to play her that way,” Hopkins added

Who Won ‘Jeopardy’ Today? (April 23, 2026) Plus, the Final Jeopardy Answer

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 3:00pm

There are three things guaranteed in the world today: Death, taxes, and Jeopardy! being on. Believe it or not, the iconic game show has been on the air for over 60 years (though the modern incarnation we know and love technically debuted in 1984). Under the watchful eye of Ken Jennings (who himself was a record-breaking champion), Jeopardy! puts three people's trivia skills and reflexes to the ultimate test. And so many of the greats to grace those podiums started by simply watching the show as it aired on weekdays, as millions have done for over half a century.

Here's a spoiler-filled recap of who won Jeopardy! today, plus the answer to Final Jeopardy.

Jamie Ding

Thirty is now the magic number for JamieDing, as he has 30 consecutive wins under his belt.

The bureaucrat and law student from Lawrenceville, New Jersey, hit a milestone that puts him in truly rarified air, trailing only Jennings himself (74 wins), Matt Amodio (38), James Holzhauer (32), and Amy Schneider (40) on the all-time consecutive wins list, per the Leaderboard of Legends.

"It's weird," he laughed while speaking with ABC, noting, "I still don't believe it, but it's also wonderful. This entire run has felt like a just celebration of my life and my journey."

Ding added $56,001 to his pocket on Thursday, after a correct Final Jeopardy, for a total of $849,603 across 30 days of gameplay.

What was Final Jeopardy today?

Final Jeopardy today was in the category "The 1950s."

The clue: "The announcement declaring this safe & effective was made April 12, 1955, the 10th anniversary of the death of a famous American."

The answer: What is the polio vaccine?

It was a nail-biter finish, as Ding came into Final Jeopardy with just a $2,800 lead over Nolan. He wagered a classic cover bet of $25,201, ensuring that even if Nolan wagered everything and answered correctly, he would still come out on top. He didn’t have to worry, though, as Nolan missed the clue, wagering $10,000 and dropping to $18,000. Mixter, like Ding, answered correctly, adding $5,000 for a solid third-place total of $10,400.

Meanwhile, Ding, who entered with $30,800, ended the game with an addition of $56,001 to his 30-day totals.

Ding will be back on Friday to go for win number 31

Leonardo DiCaprio's Response to 'Cheap' Joke by Nikki Glaser Was Totally Unexpected

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 2:31pm

Nikki Glaser is the first to admit her Leonardo DiCapriojoke at the Golden Globes wasn't her most inspired work but that didn't stop him from responding in the most unexpected way.

To his credit, the 51-year-old actor, who is known more for his dating preferences than seemingly anything else, took the joke in stride and even sent Glaser a gift after she took aim at him. Her claim? That the most revealing interview DiCaprio has done was decades ago, where he admitted to loving pasta.

”Leo, I’m sorry I made that joke. It is cheap. I tried not to, but, like, we don’t know anything else about you, man. There’s nothing else. Open up! I’m serious! I looked! I searched!" she said during the live show.

The Golden Globes admission came about when Glaser was a guest on The Tonight Show on Tuesday, Apr. 21 where she opened up about her tour, hosting Saturday Night Liveand the feud between Alix Earl and Alex Cooper.

But when the chat with Jimmy Fallon turned to her recent Golden Globes hosting duties, Glaser shared DiCaprio's surprising reaction to her joke about his penchance for dating much younger women.

Glaser told Fallon that she struggled to come up with a joke about the Oscar winner because she "just didn't want to make the joke about how he has young girlfriends. It's been done so many times. I mean, that jokes been going on longer than his current girlfriend's been alive."

🎬SIGN UP for Parade’s Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox🎬

She went on to explain that there's really nothing else to joke about because DiCaprio doesn't reveal much about his personal life. So after digging, Glaser and her team came up with a Teen Beat interview from 1991 where DiCaprio admitted that he loves "pasta, pasta, and more pasta."

Glaser's pasta punchline landed well, with DiCaprio nodding in agreement that he did still enjoy pasta. And to prove that he was a good sport about it all, the One Battle After Another star sent her three baskets of pasta.

She called the move "so good" before joking, "And part of me was like, 'Does Leo want to smash?" Then, Glaser quipped, "The type of girl he goes for he wouldn't send pasta to."

2001 Novel Ranked Among the Best Books of the 2000s

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 2:31pm

The 2000s were big for fantasy adventure books. While many of the popular releases were written for children and young adults, there were also some excellent releases for adults. One of those that has made it to the “Best Books of the 2000s” on Goodreads is one of the latter.

The 2001 novel Life of Pi by Yann Martel sits in the Top 15 of best books of the decade, as voted on by Goodreads users. Yes, it was a book before the movie!

‘Life of Pi’ Is a Story of Survival

One of the reasons Life of Pi stands out is because it’s not just a fantasy adventure. At the heart of it is a story of survival, and there’s a heaviness in that considering the book was published on September 11, 2001.

Piscine Molitor “Pi” Patel is a Tamil boy who finds himself shipwrecked in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. He’s there for 227 days with just a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker for company, and we get to explore how he makes sure he and his friend make it through. However, it’s not just about survival through the days, but also about surviving spiritually, as an experience like that is sure to test faith.

Another beauty of the book is that it can gain multiple interpretations. This is a novel that challenges you to think and feel along with Pi, and that’s certainly led to some mixed reviews and feelings.

Adapting the Book Into a Movie

Life of Pi was adapted into a movie in 2012, and it quickly gained a following. Both critics and audiences agree that the movie was well crafted, which is a rare feat. It holds an 86% Rotten Tomatoes score from the critics, with a Certified Fresh standing.

Admittedly, it would have been hard to sum up the movie with one trailer. After all, a whole movie with a teenager talking to an animal seems a little one-sided and boring. Many others have tried these bottle movies and failed. However, Ang Lee captured the heart of the story, bringing to life a philosophical and theological debate on survival and life.

1977 Power Ballad Named a No. 1 Hit Song Became a Breakup Anthem

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 2:30pm

Forty-nine years ago, beloved '70s artist Andy Gibb topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart with his heartbreak classic, "I Just Want to Be Your Everything."

Released in April 1977 as the lead single for his debut album, Flowing Rivers, "I Just Want to Be Your Everything" became a massive hit. Upon its release, the track climbed up the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 1 for four consecutive weeks and spending 16 weeks in the Top-10. The song's definitive chart dominance earned it recognition as the No. 2 song of 1977.

"I Just Want to Be Your Everything" served as the catalyst for Gibb's music career, experiencing significant commercial success. On February 1978, the track was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) after selling over 1 million copies in the U.S. In total, the single sold over 2 million copies, marking it as a major smash hit.

Gibb, the younger brother of Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb of the iconic Bee Gees, was recognized in 1978 at the 20th annual Grammy Awards with a nomination for Best Pop Vocal Performance. This nomination further solidified him as a major emerging figure in the music industry alongside his famous brothers.

Produced by Barry Gibb, Albhy Galuten, and Karl Richardson via RSO Records, "I Just Want to Be Your Everything" is recognizable for its signature late-disco-pop sound. The track blends groovy, energetic production, lush instrumentation and powerful falsetto vocals to create a definitive disco-pop power ballad.

Written by Andy's older brother Barry, the chart-topping track explores themes of utter devotion and longing to be a partner's everything. The song's upbeat shimmery production juxtaposes the lyricism, which dives into uncertainty and desperation within a relationship. This poignant vulnerability made the track an ultimate heartbreak classic.

After nearly five decades, Gibb's hit song continues to resonate with listeners on streaming platforms. On Spotify alone, "I Just Want to Be Your Everything" has garnered over 136 million streams, attesting to its long-lasting legacy as the gold standard of 1970s heartbreak disco-pop.

This Famous Model Just Wished Gigi Hadid a Happy 31st Birthday

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 2:28pm

Gigi Hadid’s biggest fan just wished her a very happy birthday. And no, it’s not her baby daddy, Zayn Malik. While the pair does share a child, five-year-old daughter Khai Malik, someone else was publicly wishing the model all the best on her big day. Instead, it was her mother (model and former Real Housewife of Beverly Hills), Yolanda Hadid, who posted a special message.

How Old Is Gigi Hadid?

Jelena Noura Hadid—or as fans know her, Gigi—was born on April 23, 1995. That makes the celebrity 31 this year.

The daughter of model/reality TV star Yolanda and luxury real estate developer Mohamed Hadid, Gigi had a pretty posh life from the start. Fans of Bravo’s Real Housewives franchise caught a glimpse of young Gigi on her mom’s show. When her mom joined the cast in 2012, the then-teenager was just a high schooler/aspiring model.

Over the course of her four seasons on the show, RHOBH cameras followed Yolanda as she helped Gigi move to New York City and start her own career. Of course, unlike most recent high school grads, Gigi didn’t move into a teeny tiny studio or dingy dorm. Instead, she called a 935-square-foot, million-plus dollar Manhattan apartment home.

Ever the hands-on mom, Yolanda helped her daughter make the transition from Southern California to the Big Apple. But that’s not all.

What Did Yolanda Hadid Wish for Her Daughter?

Even though Gigi is now in the over-30 crowd, her proud mama still showers her with praise. In her recent Instagram post, Yolanda wrote, “Happy birthday, my love…I pray that each day, love, health, and happiness will come your way. Thank you for being an incredible daughter, extraordinary mother, and the best friend anybody could ask for.”

Hadid (Yolanda, that is) continued, “Thank you for being on this journey with me and for making me proud every day.” Along with the heartwarming caption, the former Real Housewife posted three pics of the pair. Yolanda looks simply stunning in a slinky black sequined top, and Gigi shines in a simple white tank. Gigi responded to her mother’s precious post with, “I love you mama!” Birthday wishes poured in with countless comments for the newly turned 31-year-old and well over 18,000 likes.

This isn’t the first time Yolanda has wished her daughter a happy birthday on social media. Last year, when Gigi turned the big 30, her famous mother shared a cute carousel of throwback pics on her Instagram page with the caption, “Thirty years went by in a flash, 10,950 days to be exact, but there hasn’t been one day without you in mind. As you know, giving birth to your first born is life changing, it really marks the first day of the rest of your life as you transition from womanhood into the blessing of motherhood.” Aww!
