1989 Rock Album Ranked Among ‘Greatest’ of All Time Turns 37 Years Old Today
37 years ago today, on April 24, 1989, Tom Petty released his debut solo album, Full Moon Fever. By the time he had ventured into solo work for this particular collection, the Gainesville, Florida native had already experienced success throughout the ‘80s, charting with songs like “American Girl,” “Refugee,” “Don’t Do Me Like That” while backed by his longtime band, The Heartbreakers.
Full Moon Fever found Petty stepping outside of his norm, working alongside producer and Traveling Wilburys member Jeff Lynne and The Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell for the majority of the album’s song lyrics. Notably, additional Traveling Wilbury members, Roy Orbison and George Harrison, lent their expertise to the project. Meanwhile, The Heartbreakers weren’t excluded from contributing to the record — in fact, they did add their instruments to the songs — all except for drummer, Stan Lynch, who didn’t participate on his own accord.
Petty Revealed Why He Chose to Make a Solo Album“I’ve always wanted the freedom to do something like that,” the late Petty once said of making the solo album, in an interview that has been shared on YouTube. “I have no intention of leaving The Heartbreakers. They might have had some intention of leaving me, but I had no intention of leaving ... .After 13 years, you kinda like to do other things and get other influences from different people.”
Low-key was the overall take on making the album during the Full Moon Fever recording sessions, with tracking taking place inside Campbell’s built-in studio in his garage. Featuring 12 tracks, the project includes five singles. They are “Free Fallin',” “I Won’t Back Down,” “Runnin’ Down a Dream,” “A Face in the Crowd,” and “Yer So Bad.” The first three of those five songs were hits, landing at No. 1 on the Mainstream Rock chart and making it into the Top 40 on the BillboardHot 100 chart.
The Album's SuccessFollowing its debut, Full Moon Fever was a major commercial success, reaching the No. 3 spot on the Billboard 200. The 5X Platinum-certified collection went on to become a ‘Greatest’ Album of all Time, according to Rolling Stone’s 2020 top 500 list, where it ranked at No. 298, as well as a 100 best ‘Albums of the 1980s’ by the same publication. Additionally, Full Moon Fever was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
Full Moon Fever, which provided a turning point in Petty’s career, solidifying him as a rock icon, is the follow-up to his Heartbreakers 1987 platinum-certified album, Let Me Up (I’ve Had Enough).

An Unexpected Onstage Reunion Turned Into a Chart Hit 44 Years Ago Today
Fourty-four years ago today on April 24, 1982, a completely unplanned moment in music history made its way onto the charts. The Survivors, a live recording featuring Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins, officially entered the country charts, capturing the magic of a night no one saw coming.
The recording came from a 1981 concert in Stuttgart, where Cash was already scheduled to perform. By coincidence, Lewis and Perkins were also touring in Germany at the time and ended up at the same venue. What happened next was pure spontaneity: the two legends joined Cash onstage for the second half of the show, turning a standard concert into an unforgettable collaboration.
A Night That Brought Rock and Country History TogetherAll three artists were pioneers of early rock and roll and rockabilly, each with deep ties to Sun Records. Seeing them share a stage again wasn’t just nostalgic—it was historic.
The performance had an energy that couldn’t be replicated in a studio. That raw, live chemistry is exactly what made The Survivors stand out when it was later released. The album was edited and mixed by co-producer Rodney Crowell, helping shape the impromptu set into a cohesive listening experience.
From Chance Encounter to Chart SuccessWhat began as a coincidence turned into a charting album—proof that sometimes the most memorable moments in music aren’t planned at all. For fans, The Survivors offered a rare chance to hear three legends feeding off each other’s energy in real time.
More than four decades later, that night in Stuttgart still stands as a reminder of the power of live music, and the magic that can happen when the right artists find themselves on the same stage at the same time.

1988 Angry Rock Anthem Is One of the 'Best Hard Rock Covers' From This Country Star
She may not be the first artist who comes to mind when we think '80s rockers, but Carrie Underwood has proved she can hang with some of the industry's best rock vocalists.
The country superstar, who is a self-proclaimed "lover of rock music" has a well-documented history of covering her favorite heavy metal and hard rock tracks. From Ozzy Osbourne to Axl Rose, Underwood has taken on hits by some of rock's biggest legends, and according to Rolling Stone, Underwood's take on a Joan Jett classic is one of her best hard rock covers ever.
In 2019, Underwood performed the 1988 classic from Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, "I Hate Myself For Loving You," during her CMA Fest set at Nashville's Nissan Stadium.
Putting her own take on the angry rock anthem, Underwood surprised the crowd by bringing none other than Jett herself on stage. Together they finished performing "I Hate Myself For Loving You," before taking on more of the band's biggest hits, including "Bad Reputation," "Crimson and Clover" "Fresh Start" and "I Love Rock and Roll."

The performance is described by the outlet as having been "joyous enough to make even the most dark of Blackhearts swell."
The list also included more notable tracks that Underwood has rocked out to, such as Guns N Roses' "Sweet Child of Mine" and "Paradise City," plus "Alone" by Heart, "Home Sweet Home" by Mötley Crüe, "Summer of '69" by Bryan Adams, Motörhead's "Ace of Spades," and Stevie Nicks' "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," among a few others.

Best-Selling Author’s Novel Ranked Among Best ‘Books to Read On a Rainy Day'
It is a rare for an a quietly introspective novel to be as captivating and compelling as The Remains of the Day.
The bestselling work by Kazuo Ishiguro has been ranked among the best "books for a rainy day" on Goodreads, based on user lists that highlight stories perfect for slow, reflective reading. Its enduring appeal lies in its subtle emotional depth and contemplative tone.
Published in 1989, the novel follows Stevens, a devoted English butler who embarks on a road trip through the countryside while reflecting on his decades of service at a grand estate. As memories surface, Stevens begins to confront the choices he's made, particularly his unwavering loyalty to his employer and the personal sacrifices that came with it.
Set against the backdrop of post-war England, the story offers a look into a changing world where old social structures are beginning to fade. Ishiguro uses Stevens' journey to explore themes of duty, regret and missed opportunities, crafting a narrative that is as deeply personal as it is quietly profound.
Ishiguro completed his first draft of the novel in just four weeks, during which he set himself a rigid writing schedule: Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. with an hour-long lunch break and two-hour dinner break.
"I'd not see, let alone answer, any mail, and would not go near the phone," Ishiguro wrote for The Guardian. "No one would come to the house. Lorna, despite her own busy schedule, would for this period do my share of the cooking and housework. In this way, so we hoped, I’d not only complete more work quantitively, but reach a mental state in which my fictional world was more real to me than the actual one."
The novel was awarded the Booker Prize, further cementing its status as a modern classic.
It was later adapted into the acclaimed film of the same name, starring Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson. The film brought the novel's understated emotion to life, with both leads earning Academy Award nominations for their performances. Its careful pacing and attention to detail mirrored the tone of the book, making it a faithful and widely praised adaptation.
"I quite like the idea that something I've put out there has begun to permeate and grow in the culture," Ishiguro told Goodreads of his film adaptations. "That's a seriously flattering thing—to contribute in a little way to what's out there in the public imagination. Isn't that what we're creating stories to do, ultimately?"
More than three decades after its release, The Remains of the Day continues to resonate with readers who appreciate its quiet storytelling and emotional nuance. With its place among Goodreads' rainy-day favorites, the novel stands as a timeless reminder that some of the most powerful stories are the ones that unfold slowly, revealing their depth one reflection at a time.

Prince Harry Calls Out 'American Leadership' Days Before King Charles' Visit to the US
Prince Harry made rare political comments during his visit to Ukraine, calling out “American leadership” days ahead of his father, King Charles III’s, US state visit.
The Duke of Sussex, 41, made a surprise two-day trip to Ukraine’s capital city, arriving by train on April 23. He spoke at the Kyiv Security Forum, and without specifically naming President Donald Trump, he pointed to the United States to fulfill its “obligations” during the Russian-Ukrainian war, which started in February 2022.
“The United States has a singular role in this story. Not only because of its power, but because when Ukraine gave up nuclear weapons, America was part of the assurance that Ukraine’s sovereignty and borders would be respected,” Harry said, in part, while on stage. “This is a moment for American leadership. A moment for America to show that it can honor its international treaty obligations, not out of charity, but out of its own enduring role in global security and strategic stability.”

Harry, who currently resides in California with his wife, Meghan Markle, and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, also pleaded to Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop the violence.
“No nation benefits from the continued loss of life we are witnessing,” he said, directed at Putin. "Years into this war, with immense losses and limited gains, it is increasingly clear that this path offers no victory, only more loss.”
Harry acknowledged he is “not a politician” earlier in the speech, but visited Ukraine as a “soldier,” referencing his 10 years in the British Army, and a “humanitarian.”
Although Harry is not a working member of the British royal family anymore, it is still very rare for him to make political comments. His speech came days before his father, Charles, and his stepmother, Queen Camilla, are scheduled to come to the US for four days.

While Charles and Camilla’s visit is officially meant to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the timing also comes as tension rises between the two countries. Trump and U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer have publicly disagreed over immigration policies and the war in Iran. Despite some politicians in the UK calling for Charles to cancel his US visit, Trump expressed excitement about his majesty coming to the White House.
Trump said Charles’ visit could “absolutely” ease tensions between the UK and US during an interview with the BBC.
“He's fantastic. He's a fantastic man,” Trump said about Charles. "I know him well, I've known him for years … He's a brave man, and he's a great man. They would absolutely be a positive."
Charles and Camilla will be in the United States from April 27 to April 30, and are expected to have an informal tea with Trump and his wife, Melania Trump, and attend a formal state dinner. Charles will become the second monarch to deliver an address to Congress during his visit after his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, did the same in 1991.

Shoppers Say This 'Fabulous' 7-Piece Cookware Set at Costco Is the 'Best Money Can Buy'
Cooking should be an intuitive, pleasurable process rather than a battle against sticking food or uneven heat. When your equipment performs reliably, it boosts your confidence, allowing you to experiment with flavors and techniques that might otherwise feel intimidating. A great meal is not just about the quality of ingredients, but the precision with which they are prepared.
Unfortunately, many home cooks settle for subpar cookware that degrades over time, warping under heat or losing its non-stick coating after just a few months of use. The true secret to consistent culinary success lies in investing in high-performance equipment that bridges the gap between professional-grade gear and home accessibility. By focusing on durability, heat conductivity and versatility, you can transform your kitchen into a more efficient space.

After the pictures went viral, Russini and Vrabel both called the photos “misleading” and vehemently denied rumors of an affair. The journalist has been married to Kevin Goldschmidt since 2020 while the football coach has been married to his wife Jennifer since 1999.
Russini’s Athletic editor Steven Ginsberg also came to their defense, telling NBC News that the photos lacked “essential context.”
“These were public interactions in front of many people,” Ginsberg said. “Dianna is a premier journalist covering the NFL and we’re proud to have her at The Athletic.”
Russini ultimately resigned from the publication on Apr. 14.
On Apr. 23, after Vrabel announced his intent to seek counseling, Page Six released photos that appeared to show Russini and Vrabel kissing at a bar in New York City in March 2020—seemingly confirming the alleged affair and sparking questions about the timeline of the pair’s relationship.
In a statement obtained on Apr. 23, by Page Six, the New England Patriots said it supports Vrabel’s decision to prioritize his family, which includes his wifeand their two sons.
“The New England Patriots fully support Mike Vrabel’s decision to prioritize his family first, as well as his own well-being,” the statement read. “Mike has been open with us about his commitment to being the best version of himself for his family, this team and our fans, and we respect the steps he is taking to follow through on that commitment.”
“We are confident in the leadership and communication Mike has established with our personnel staff throughout this pre-draft process,” the statement continued. “While he will not be present at the facility on Saturday, we know the draft evaluations are complete and [Patriots Executive Vice President of Player Personnel] Eliot Wolf and his personnel staff are prepared to execute our draft as planned this weekend.”
Prince Harry Mirrors Princess Diana by Breaking 1 Royal Protocol Rule During Ukraine Visit
Prince Harry wants to show the world he’s following in Princess Diana’s footsteps.
The Duke of Sussex, 41, made a surprise visit to Kyiv, Ukraine, on April 23. Harry arrived in the morning after taking an overnight train from Poland for the two-day trip, Good Morning Britain reported. He traveled across the world to see the work of The HALO Trust, an organization that works to clear landmines and undetonated explosives in war-affected areas, and speak at a security conference.

As for the big picture reason for his trip, Harry told ITV News, which is accompanying him around Kyiv, that he wanted “to remind people back home and around the world what Ukraine is up against and to support the people and partners doing extraordinary work every hour of every day in incredibly tough conditions.”
Royal watchers couldn’t help but draw comparisons between him and his mother, Princess Diana. The Princess of Wales famously supported the charity and made history in January 1997 when she walked through an active landmine clearance zone in Huambo, Angola, wearing a protective vest and a visor. Her visit was crucial in raising awareness around the world and contributed to the signing of the Ottawa Mine Ban Treaty later that year.

In addition to furthering Diana’s global causes, Harry also performed a small gesture that was very similar to his mother's. After stepping off the train, Harry was greeted by a small group of the public. He went down the line, shaking their hands and giving warm hugs. Diana was known for breaking royal protocol by hugging the public and acting affectionately with her supporters.
Typically understood by the public, royal protocol at public events is that civilians should not make physical contact with a royal unless they extend their hand first. Prince William and Princess Kate occasionally extend a hug during an event, although protocol dictates they should have an overall professional, formal demeanor.
Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, stepped back as senior royals in 2020. They are now raising their kids, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, in California. After their exit and subsequent interviews about their time working for Buckingham Palace, their relationship with the royal family has been strained.

The couple embarked on a private tour of Australia in April, and Harry’s surprise visit to Ukraine demonstrates that he is committed to continuing his mother’s work independently. The Duke gave a speech and drew on his 10 years of experience in the British army, including two tours of Afghanistan, to discuss how the impact of the war in Ukraine will last “for years to come."
“I am here as a soldier who understands service, as a humanitarian who has seen the human cost of conflict, and as a friend of Ukraine who believes the world must not grow used to this war or numb to its consequences,” Harry said, praising the “resilience” of Ukrainians. “Beyond the visible losses, there is the invisible cost: The trauma carried by those returning from the front. The psychological strain on families living under constant threat and bombardment.”
Jelly Roll Accused of Making Death Threat Toward Comedian Nicole Arbour
Jelly Roll has been accused of making a death threat against comedian Nicole Arbour.
According to a Mar. 1 incident report obtained by TMZ on Thursday, Apr. 23, Arbour claimed that she’s been dealing with “ongoing issues” involving the country star and those associated with him.
Per the report, Jelly Roll allegedly referenced seeing Arbour at a charity event with a camera. The comedian claims the singer then said that if he saw her with the camera, “he would kill her.”
Arbour told authorities she had a video of the alleged incident, and when deputies reviewed the footage, they identified Jelly Roll and another man in the clip. The report notes deputies said they heard the alleged comment while reviewing the footage.

In a statement to TMZ, a representative for the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department said, “As you’re probably aware, there appears to be an ongoing online back and forth between the two. No charges have been filed and there is no current investigation underway on the part of MNPD.”
In December 2025, prior to the alleged incident, Arbour claimed that Jelly Roll wanted to apologize to her for undisclosed reasons.
“Feels strange that a lawyer who says they rep you is allegedly trying to get a weird joint statement from us that we’re cool when you haven’t apologized yet,” she said on Instagram at the time. “Feel free to message me. Let’s confirm that came from you.”
Two months later, Arbour accused Jelly Roll of orchestrating a “hush money deal," but did not specify what the alleged payment was for.
“Hi @JellyRoll615 can I post that alleged hush money deal you allegedly sent over with an alleged threat that if I won’t sign it, you’d allegedly sue me??” Arbour wrote via X on Feb. 14. “Really sucks that you couldn’t be man enough to apologize for all the INSANE things you did, but here we are.”

Later than month, Arbour dropped a “proof bomb” of an alleged confidentiality agreement between herself and Jelly Roll and his wife, Bunnie XO.
“This was sent to me Feb 11, 2026 by JellyRoll and Bunnies lawyer after a YEAR of them trying to weasel out of publicly apologizing for the disgusting and horrific things they did to me, even tricking me (in my opinion) into signing a different version of this where I thought they agreed to posting a public apology,” Arbour claimed via Instagram on Feb. 25 with screenshots of the alleged court documents.
“Ya know, cause that’s what was discussed with your ‘team.’ Don’t worry, I retracted my signature as soon as I saw the trick," she continued. "On behalf of myself and all the people you guys have done vile things to: get f--ked.”
Jelly Roll has yet to address the ongoing feud and alleged death threat publicly.

Color Psychologist Says if Your Favorite Color Is Pink, You Likely Have These 7 Traits
You may not put much thought into why you love your favorite color, such as pink. You may think your hue preferences "just happened"—but that's not true, says Michelle Lewis, a color psychology expert, certified color analyst, author and the founder of ColorAnalysis.com and The Color Institute.
"Color preference isn't random," says Lewis, who is also the author of Color Secrets: Learning The One Universal Language We Were Never Taught. "It reflects the emotional states we're drawn to, the environments where we feel most ourselves and the way we're psychologically wired to engage with the world."
In fact, she says there's more science to back up the idea that color preference can provide clues into your personality than most people realize. For instance, a 2022 study in Frontiers in Psychologyexamined more than 850 individuals aged 20 to 60. The researchers asked them to share the colors they associated with various personality words and rank their color preferences. The team found that personality types had color associations and that color preference could predict personality.
Still, Lewis says it's important to keep in mind that your favorite color won't tell you everything you need to know about yourself.
"It's one data point among many," she states. "Culture, personal history and lived experience all shape our relationship with color. What color preference gives us is a pattern. A reliable starting place for understanding someone's emotional orientation."
So, what might it say about you if you're always "thinking pink?" Lewis tells Parade that if your favorite color is pink, you likely have these seven traits.

What Is Color Psychology?"At its core, color psychology is the study of color as communication between the world and our nervous system, between our choices and our inner life," Lewis says.
She explains that each color produces a measurable physiological, mental or emotional response. Think changes in heart rate, cortisol levels, focus and mood. She says color psychology asks questions like:
- What are those responses?
- Why do they happen?
- How can we use that knowledge deliberately?
"It's the science of a language most of us are fluent in without realizing it," Lewis shares.
What Is the Personality of People Who Like Pink?Tatiana Sviridova/Getty Images
When all is said and done, Lewis reports that pink lovers are "comforting creatures and creatures of comfort."
"They tend to be warm, nurturing and emotionally attuned, with a gift for making the people around them feel safe and at ease," she shares.
She explains that people whose favorite color is pink gravitate toward life's softer, more pleasant dimensions. Don't get it twisted, though. They are not naive.
"They genuinely believe in the power of warmth to smooth the rough edges of human interaction and daily stress," she states.

What Is the Psychology of Loving Pink?Lewis shares that pink is physiologically calming. Some research suggests it can lower heart rate and aggressive impulses for short periods. For this reason, Baker-Miller Pink (or "Drunk Tank Pink") became a staple in prisons since Alexander Schauss' research on its soothing effects was published in the 1970s. Later studies produced mixed results, with some indicating that Baker-Miller Pink lowers anxiety.
"People who love pink are drawn to exactly what the color produces: softness, safety and a gentle emotional temperature," Lewis explains. "Pink is their retreat. It shows up in their homes, their wardrobes and their communication style, always signaling the same thing: slow down, enjoy life and indulge in a little bit of fun."
But keep in mind that you need red to make pink.
"Because pink contains red, prolonged exposure eventually activates rather than soothes," she points out. "So if you love pink, use it in pops: a throw, an accent wall, the color you reach for when you need to take the edge off a tense morning. Don't paint your whole office and wonder why you're restless by noon."
7 Traits of People Whose Favorite Color Is Pink, According to a Color Psychologist 1. They're naturally nurturingPeople who love pink have an innate desire to care for their people.
"They notice when someone is off, they reach out before being asked, and they create environments—physical and emotional—where others feel tended to," Lewis tells Parade. "This isn't performance; it's their natural mode of being in a relationship."

2. They're emotionally warmPink lovers also possess a softness to them that the people in their orbit notice instantly.
"They lead with warmth rather than wit, connection rather than competition," Lewis explains. "People tend to open up around them quickly—often without knowing exactly why—because pink lovers make it genuinely safe to do so."
3. They're optimistsPeople who consistently "think pink" are also glass-is-half-full types—optimists. But don't mistake it for toxic positivity.
"This isn't denial," Lewis reports. "It's a deliberate orientation toward what is pleasant, hopeful and kind. They are the people who find something good to say, who remember to celebrate small things and who bring a sense of ease to environments that would otherwise feel tense."

4. They're conflict-averseLewis describes pink as a "disarming color" and pink lovers as "disarming people."
"Confrontation makes them genuinely uncomfortable, not because they lack opinions, but because discord is physically unpleasant to them," she says. "They would rather smooth things over than escalate, and they are remarkably good at doing exactly that."
5. They're connectorsLewis shares that people who gravitate toward pink are socially connecting.
"Pink lovers form comfortable, warm connections with relative ease," she says. "They are not necessarily the life of the party, but they are the person everyone feels good talking to. Their relationships tend to be numerous, pleasant and built on a foundation of mutual comfort rather than intense emotional depth."
6. They're perceptive of feelingsPink fans are pros at reading the emotional temperature of a situation. This attunement allows them to pick up on others' emotions with what Lewis hails as "unusual accuracy."
"They read the room instinctively," she explains. "This makes them gifted communicators in delicate situations. They know when to speak and, perhaps more importantly, when to simply be present."

7. They're comfort-orientedPeople who list pink as their favorite color are known to prioritize physical and emotional comfort in their environments, relationships and rituals.
"Their homes tend to be soft and inviting," Lewis reports. "Their clothing choices tend toward the tactile and gentle. This isn't indulgence. It's an intelligent response to their own nervous system."

Potential Challenges Faced by People Who Love Pink 1. They may engage in conflict avoidancePink lovers can shy away from conflict—many people can, regardless of color preference. However, Lewis shares that the relationship with conflict is the most significant conflict they face.
"Because confrontation is so uncomfortable for them, they tend to avoid it—sometimes at a significant personal cost," she says. "Important conversations get delayed, boundaries go unset and resentments accumulate beneath the pleasant surface. The very warmth that makes them so beloved can become a trap if it prevents them from advocating for themselves."
2. They may avoid deep connectionsPink fans value comfort, but it can prevent them from going deeper in their relationships.
"They form bonds easily, but the preference for keeping things pleasant can mean they rarely let anyone fully in or fully know them," Lewis explains. "There is sometimes a loneliness beneath the warmth that even their closest people don't see."
Related: 300 Deep Questions To Ask a Guy or Girl—or Really Anyone You Want To Know Better
3. Others may misunderstand themLewis points out that the world often associates softness with weakness. So, pink lovers can fly under the radar.
"They may be underestimated professionally, dismissed as naive or find that their warmth is taken advantage of," she explains. "Learning to pair their natural softness with a clear sense of their own strength is often the central work of their lives."
Final TakeawaysColor psychology studies color as a form of communication between your environment and your nervous system, and between your choices and your inner life. What should you know if you or someone you love lists pink as the best color? Here's what to keep in mind.
- Color preference isn't random. Research suggests there's a link between your favorite color and personality. But Lewis, a color psychologist, reminds everyone that color preference is one clue, not the whole case—your environment and cultural influences can affect your traits.
- People who love pink often have certain traits. Lewis says that pink lovers are often warm, social connectors and optimistic. They appreciate comfort and tend to shy away from conflict.
- Pink lovers face some pitfalls. People whose favorite color is pink may struggle to address conflict or develop deeper bonds. They may also get underestimated or taken advantage of because they go hard on "soft" traits.

NFL No. 1 Draft Pick, Fernando Mendoza Gets Personal, ‘My Mom is My Light, She Is My Why’
The 2026 NFL Draft just started, and it looks like there’s already a number one pick. On Thursday night, the Las Vegas Raiders announced that they’ve selected former Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza in the first round.
Who is Fernando Mendoza? The 22-year-old was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and raised in Miami, Florida. He started his college football career in California but later transferred to Indiana. Mendoza remained a Hoosier, leading his team to the 2025 National Championships and winning the Heisman Trophy.
Who Are Fernando Mendoza’s Parents? While natural talent and plenty of hard work have gotten the quarterback to where he is today as the first NFL Draft pick, his parents—Elsa and Fernando Mendoza Sr.—also had a hand in his success.
In 2008, Mendoza’s mother, Elsa, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). The progressive disease that causes a breakdown of the protective covering of the nerves can result in fatigue, pain, vision impairment, mobility issues, memory difficulties, and numbness, according to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
The football star recently posted a loving tribute on Instagram, celebrating his mother and explaining the Mendoza Family Fund (in partnership with the National MS Society). Along with a throwback picture of the pair, he said, “My mom is my light, she is my why.”
View this post on InstagramMendoza’s mother appears in the clip, explaining that while she has MS, “it definitely does not define who I am.” She continues, “I truly believe that together we can form a future without MS.” The QB goes on to praise his mom, saying, “She taught me to be optimistic, stay resilient, and be myself.” And he isn’t the only one applauding Elsa! Her husband, Fernando Sr., calls his wife a warrior, adding, “I’m always in awe of how strong she is on a daily basis. What a positive outlook she has.”
The newly drafted Las Vegas Raider recently appeared on the Today Show, where he said (of his mother), “I’ve been the underdog. However, my mom has never let me think that way.”
Fans probably noticed that Mendoza was not at the draft in Pittsburgh. So why did the number one pick stay home? According to the player, his “family situation” made attending the NFL Draft in-person challenging. But that wasn’t the only reason. He also explained it gave him the chance to share this memory with everyone who had supported him throughout the early years of his football career, saying he wanted to “Start this journey with everyone who has gotten me to this point.”
