10 Best Free Caribbean Beaches Worth Skipping Cruise Excursions For

I cruise at least once a month (sometimes more). Living in Florida makes it easy, and as a cruise expert, I love discovering the ports I visit, but as a wise (and frugal) cruiser, I’d rather spend my money on a balcony for the week than in an overpriced beach chair for a few hours. That's just my personal preference. When you do the math, sometimes that cabin upgrade for the entire trip costs less than a day at the beach if you book through the cruise line’s shore excursion desk. I should know—I've paid for more overpriced ship excursions than I care to admit, I've stood in more tour lines than I'd like to remember, and I even got left behind by a tour operator once (while my husband sat on the bus in old San Juan).

I was shelling out money left and right. One day, I had an aha! moment. I'd been tossing money away on a day at the beach, when I knew there were beaches I could get to on my own for a fraction of the cost. Isn't that what the locals do? Why was I spending over $100 on each of us for a towel, a chair and a watered-down drink?

What I've learned after years of sailing the Caribbean is that some of the most beautiful beaches in the world are completely free, and most of them are just a short cab ride or an easy walk from wherever your ship docks. This is what I do as a cruise expert that might just find you sitting next to me, sunblock in hand.

Here are some of my favorites, from the Florida Keys all the way down to Aruba, including what it costs to get there, what to watch out for, and what makes that bathing suit you packed worth the trip.

1. Fort Zachary Taylor Beach—Key West, Florida Escape Duval Street for a relaxing day at Zachary Taylor State Beach in Key West

Key West is one of those rare ports where your ship literally docks in the heart of town, and you can wander straight off the gangway into town without spending a cent on transportation. Duval Street, Mallory Square, the Hemingway House, it's all right there.

But, if you want actual sand and water, Fort Zachary Taylor State Park is your best bet. It's about 1.25 miles from the cruise pier, a doable walk in comfortable shoes, though the Florida heat and humidity can make it feel longer than it sounds. Most people opt for a quick taxi or Uber, which runs about $10–$15 each way. There's a small park entrance fee of around $2.50 per person. What you get in return is one of the best-kept beaches in the Keys with pine-shaded picnic areas, calm water, decent snorkeling along the rocks, and a beach bar if you need something cold to drink.

If you'd rather skip the walk altogether, Smathers Beach (on the opposite side of the key) is Key West's longest stretch of sand and just a short taxi ride ($10–$15) in the other direction. There's no entrance fee, and chairs and water sports gear are available for rent for a more classic "beach day" vibe.

My Take: Key West's beaches aren't its biggest draw, probably because its beaches are more rock than sand, so the town itself is the real attraction. But if you've already been to Sloppy Joe's and the Southernmost Point, Fort Zachary delivers a dip in the ocean and a relaxing day.

2. Junkanoo Beach—Nassau, Bahamas Junkanoo Beach

Nassau gets a bad reputation among cruisers, and at first glance, it's understandable. The area right outside the cruise terminal can feel chaotic and touristy. But things have improved since a major renovation in 2023 modernized the port area and Junkanoo Beach, which is just a mile or so from the pier. Junkanoo Beach is a legitimate beach day with zero-dollar admission. I know, it’s part of my regular Nassau route (first I hit the museum and galleries, then I walk down the street).

The walk takes about 15–20 minutes. You can also grab a quick cab for just a few dollars. The beach has food vendors, chair rentals if you want them, and clear, calm water that's perfectly fine for swimming. It won't blow your mind, but it won't empty your wallet either. On several occasions, there have been musicians playing by the beach while I was there (they work for tips, and I've had them ask what I'd like them to play), so you get that local music vibe, too!

If you're looking to splash out a little (or maybe a LOT), the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island is a short cab or water taxi ride away ($6–$8 per person each way by cab, $7 each way by water taxi). You can wander the grounds and public areas for free. A full day-pass to the water park is a separate cost (personally, I find it on the very expensive side), but even a stroll through the marina and casino area is worth the ride.

My Take: Junkanoo Beach is convenient and genuinely free, but it can get crowded, especially when multiple ships are in port. Go early or save this stop for a quieter sailing day when fewer ships are in port.

3. Radio Beach—Bimini, Bahamas Beach Bimini

Bimini is a small island with a big personality, and it’s really easy to get around. When your ship docks, walk to the end of the pier and see if you can catch a tram. Some of them are free (depending on which cruise you’re traveling on). They all seem to stop at Resorts World, and once there, you’ll see another free tram service that whisks you around the resort complex. But, for those like me, who want to get off the ship and jump right into the ocean, Kayak Beach is right by the pier. This calm, pretty stretch costs absolutely nothing to access. It's the first tram stop, and it's perfectly lovely for a low-key morning. I try to stop at the food trucks or Fisherman's Village for some authentic conch fritters or johnnycakes while I'm there.

But for me, the real gem is Radio Beach, about 2.2 miles south in Alice Town. It's the nicest local beach on North Bimini with soft sand, turquoise water, great snorkeling near the rocks, a beach shack serving conch wraps and coconut rum drinks, and that Bahamian vibe that you came on the cruise for. Getting there is part of the fun. A taxi will run you about $5 per person and takes under 10 minutes. Rent a golf cart (around $140 for the day for a cart, and if you really want to explore the island, it's definitely a fun way to do it), and you can explore the entire island at your own pace.

My Take: Bimini is one of those places I can just go to for the day, as we have a high-speed ferry that goes back and forth from South Florida. The water is incredibly clear, and it's one of those islands that feels genuinely unspoiled. Don't skip the walk across the bridge from the port and get your phone ready for a photo, because the view is gorgeous.

4. Xanadu Beach and Lucaya Beach– Freeport, Grand Bahama Island Xanadu Beach

To be completely honest with you, the cruise port in Freeport is nothing more than an industrial area, and there is absolutely nothing within walking distance except a small straw market and a couple of restaurants (like Senor Frogs). Anyone who tells you otherwise hasn't been there (or was whisked away quickly on a cruise excursion). But don't let that stop you from leaving the ship, because Grand Bahama Island's beaches are really beautiful.

Xanadu Beach is the closest, about a 10-minute taxi ride from the port. I’ve never found it to be crowded. It’s calm and free to access. It's just a quiet stretch of white sand with clear water and a real laid-back local feel. If you’re looking for something a little more happening, Lucaya Beach near Port Lucaya Marketplace is about a 20-minute ride and puts you closer to the restaurants, shopping and a waterfront market when you're ready for lunch.

A shared taxi or shuttle van runs about $5 per person, and a private taxi is around $14 per person each way.

My Take: Freeport does take more effort than some ports, but the payoff is real if you're willing to take a short cab ride. The beaches here are so much less crowded than Nassau.

5. Paradise Beach & Palancar Beach—Cozumel, Mexico Entrance to Paradise Beach

Cozumel is famous for two things: coral reefs and all-inclusive beach clubs. The beach clubs are fantastic, but be prepared to shell out some money because they all charge for access. This is what you will most likely get via your shore excursion through the cruise line. However, there are a couple of genuinely free beach options if you know where to look.

Palancar Beach, which is on the southern end of the island, is a free public beach with clear turquoise water and access to some of the best snorkeling in the Caribbean right from the shore. Getting there requires a taxi from the cruise pier, which will run you about $15–$20 each way, but the water visibility and marine life make it worth every cent.

If you want something closer to the pier, the town of San Miguel is a short walk from the Punta Langosta dock (check to see if you’re docking at Punta Langosta or the International Pier, as this will make a difference as to how far you'll have to travel). The waterfront has a public park and access to the ocean, though it's more for a stroll than a swim. If you’ve docked at the International Pier, be aware that taxis line up immediately outside the port and are incredibly easy to negotiate.

What makes it special: The coral reef system here is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, which is the second largest in the world. Even from the beach, you can snorkel over coral gardens and spot parrotfish, rays, and sea turtles. If you have them, bring your own gear for maximum savings.

6. Seven Mile Beach—Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands Seven Mile Beach

This one deserves its reputation. Seven Mile Beach, FYI, isn’t quite as long as they say. It’s really closer to 5.5 miles, but this beach is consistently ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the entire Caribbean. The sand is a soft powdery white, the water is that shade of turquoise you see in photos (or your screensaver), and by Cayman Islands law, every inch of the beach is public and free!

The catch:Grand Cayman ships tender passengers ashore rather than docking in George Town, and the beach is about 15–20 minutes from the tender dock by car. Taxi fares run around $10–$15 per person for a shared van, or you can catch one of the local public minibuses for just $2 Cayman dollars (about $2.50 USD) each way. Chair rentals and umbrellas are available for a fee once you arrive.

My Take: This is one of the few ports where I think the payoff of being a little more complicated is completely in your favor. The effort of getting to this beach is worth it! Just be sure to leave yourself plenty of time to get back to the tender because missing that boat is not the souvenir you want.

7. Great Bay Beach—St. Maarten You can almost jump up and touch the planes as they come in for a landing over Maho Beach.

Philipsburg, the Dutch capital of St. Maarten, is where the cruise ships dock, and that puts you within easy walking distance of Great Bay Beach, a long stretch of sand right along the Boardwalk, lined with restaurants, beach bars and souvenir shops. It's absolutely free to access and genuinely very pretty, with calm Caribbean water and a festive, social atmosphere. You can walk there from the pier in about 10 minutes.

But this is St. Maarten, and I know you've seen photos of that bucket-list experience of Maho Beach in St. Maarten. Famous for its jaw-dropping runway proximity, Maho is where the planes come in so low overhead that you can practically touch the landing wheels. This beach will cost more than any of the others to get to. A shared taxi from Philipsburg costs about $8 per person each way (private taxis run $25–$30 total); the local minibus is just $2–$3. Give yourself about 25–30 minutes each way and plan your arrival around the flight schedule so you don’t miss seeing the planes fly over. The Sunset Bar & Grill posts all of the arrivals on a board so you can time the big planes and get in position to just look up in awe.

My Take: Maho Beach is one of those experiences that doesn't exist anywhere else in the world. The beach itself isn't large or particularly great for swimming, but watching a 747 skim over your head while you stand in the sand is something you'll never forget.

8. Condado Beach—San Juan, Puerto Rico Condado Beach

Of all of the cruise ports I’ve been to, San Juan is one of the most walkable in the Caribbean. Ships dock at the Old San Juan Terminal, which puts you practically in the middle of the historic district with cobblestone streets, colorful colonial buildings, and you can get to both Spanish forts easily on foot. Many cruisers spend their whole port day without ever needing a taxi.

For beach time, the closest option is Escambrón Beach, about a 10-minute taxi ride from the Old San Juan terminal (or if you feel like seeing more of San Juan, you can take a longer walk through the Condado district). It's a Blue Flag beach, which means that it meets international standards for water quality. It’s calm, clear and family-friendly with lifeguards in season and no admission fee.

For those looking for a livelier scene, Condado Beach is less than 2 miles from the port with a more resort feel, good shopping, and some excellent restaurant choices nearby. Isla Verde, about 15 minutes by taxi, has the classic wide-sand beach experience with jet skis and parasailing vendors if you want to add some action to your afternoon.

My Take: Puerto Rico is genuinely special. This is not a beach tip, but if you have time after the beach, don't miss Castillo San Felipe del Morro. It's free to enter and is one of the most dramatic fortresses in the Americas.

9. Eagle Beach—Aruba I'll be right there sitting under the Fofoti Tree.

Aruba is my favorite island in the Caribbean, full stop. If I could choose any island to live on, it would be here, so it’s no surprise that my favorite beaches are also here. What’s not to love? The weather is almost always perfect (it sits below the hurricane belt), the people are warm and welcoming, the water is calm and brilliantly clear, and Eagle Beach is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful stretches of sand on the planet.

The good news: Eagle Beach is completely free. The Oranjestad cruise terminal is well-organized, with taxis lined up immediately outside. The ride to Eagle Beach takes about 10 minutes and costs around $10–$15 per taxi (not per person, so gather up your family or friends). For the budget-conscious, the Arubus public bus (the L10A route) picks up right across from the terminal and costs about $2.60 each way and runs approximately every 20 minutes.

If you'd rather not leave the port area immediately, Surfside Beach is actually within a 15-minute walk from the terminal. This is a smaller, calmer option that's great for a quick swim before exploring the shops in Oranjestad (I had a romantic toes-in-the-sand dinner on Surfside Beach many years ago, but that’s for another story).

My Take: Eagle Beach is wide enough that it never feels crowded, and the water is some of the calmest and clearest in the entire Caribbean. If you're lucky, you will be there at sea turtle nesting time (don't get too close, as you don't want to disturb them). There's a reason I keep going back to Aruba, and it always starts with this beach. I park my things under one of the beautifully Fofoti trees with its twisted-trunk and off-center leaves for shade.

10. The Private Islands—CocoCay, Ocean Cay, Great Stirrup Cay, etc. Great Stirrup Cay - NCL's private island

I'd be doing you a disservice if I wrote a list of free Caribbean beaches without mentioning the cruise lines' own private islands because these (unless you’re paying for a cabana or one of the more private areas) can offer you the best free beach day available on any itinerary, and there are cruisers who don't fully appreciate what's already included in their fare.

Perfect Day at CocoCay (Royal Caribbean and Celebrity) is the most developed of the group, with multiple free beaches that include Chill Island, South Beach, and Harbor Bay included at no extra cost. The Thrill Waterpark costs extra, but the beaches, including food stations, and stunning Bahamian water are all part of your cruise package. No taxi, no negotiation, no worrying about getting back to the ship on time.

Ocean Cay Marine Reserve (MSC Cruises) is the largest private island experience and one of the most naturally beautiful. This is a former industrial sand-mining site that MSC has transformed into a genuine marine reserve. The beaches are free to all passengers, the atmosphere is more relaxed than CocoCay, and the snorkeling is excellent.

Great Stirrup Cay (Norwegian Cruise Line) holds the historic distinction of being the world's first cruise line private island, operating since 1977. Dining on the island is also included in your fare, and yes, the beverage package from the ship extends ashore if you have one, and the recently upgraded facilities, including a new oceanfront pool, swim-up bars, and a tram to get around, make it a great inclusion.

My Take: On a day when your ship is calling at one of these private islands, seriously consider staying. You'll skip the taxi, skip the crowds at the public beaches, and have all of this at your doorstep, included in what you've already paid.

A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Go

Always carry cash. Many Caribbean taxis, beach entrance booths and local vendors are cash only. Small bills in US dollars are accepted almost everywhere.

Negotiate BEFORE you ride. In ports without metered taxis, always confirm the fare before you get in the cab. Most ports have official rate sheets. Ask the driver to see one if the price seems off.

Watch the clock. Remember, the ship is on a schedule and will leave without you. Set a phone alarm for one hour before all-aboard time and give yourself an extra buffer on tender ports like Grand Cayman.

Chair rentals are rarely free. The beach is free; the lounge chair and umbrella setup is not. Budget $10–$25 if you want to be fully set up, or bring a beach towel and find your own patch of sand.

You’ve paid for your cruise, and the Caribbean can be expensive. Your beach day doesn't have to be.

When Is Juneteenth?

What Is Juneteenth and Why Do We Celebrate It?

Juneteenth is the day that marks the emancipation of the final group of enslaved African Americans. On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger reached a community in Galveston, Texas. Almost 250,000 enslaved people were unaware of the Emancipation Proclamation, issued by President Abraham Lincoln almost two years earlier in 1863.

The first celebration happened in 1872 when local businesspeople and church members created Emancipation Park. However, the U.S. government didn't recognize Juneteenth until 2021, when acting President Biden signed legislation making it a federal holiday.

How To Celebrate Juneteenth

Let's take a look at thirty ways to celebrate Juneteenth this year.

1. Organize a Cookout

This year, organize a Juneteenth cookout for your friends, family or neighborhood. No Juneteenth cookout would be complete without the traditional "red drink," made from fresh berries, hibiscus or any other red-colored fruit or drink mix. Because red is a significant color to Juneteenth, other red foods like red velvet cake are often found at the menu's center. Barbecue, collard greens, strawberry pie and sweet potato pie are also culinary staples for your cookout.

2. Hold a Neighborhood Block Party

A major principle of Juneteenth is celebrating community and helping the people in it grow and heal. Neighborhood block parties are an excellent way to bring everyone on your street (and those who want to visit) together for fellowship, fun and food. If you can't host a block party in your neighborhood, try to attend a nearby one!

3. Support Black-Owned Businesses

Buying goods and services from Black-owned businesses is a fantastic way to celebrate Juneteenth, but that isn't the only way to show support. You can write a review, recommend companies to others, help promote it on social media, donate to crowdfunding campaigns or simply take the time to understand the business and its impact on the community.

4. Participate in a Book Club

Are you a part of a book club? If so, pick a book for June that explores themes of emancipation, racial equality, and Black history and culture. Meet up at your favorite coffee shop, sit back and discuss the book of choice.

5. Volunteer at a Social Justice Organization

Contact your local community centers, advocacy groups or historical societies to see if they need volunteers. By doing this, you’re helping to boost the voices of nonprofit organizations that strive toward racial and social justice. Volunteer tasks may include helping serve free meals, fundraising or other community activities. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are also a great place to start if you're having trouble finding somewhere to donate your time.

6. Attend a Film Screening

Although watching TV might not seem like a typical way to celebrate Juneteenth, Juneteenth: A Galveston Story, Two Dollars and a Dream and Metcalfe Park: Black Vote Rising are all examples of documentaries that teach you about Black history and pressing racial justice issues today. Local movie theaters, universities or clubs often host film screenings or movie nights around Juneteenth.

7. Visit a Museum

You can't celebrate Juneteenth without acknowledging history. Educating yourself about Black history and culture is the first step towards becoming an advocate for racial justice. Visit one of these museums to start learning:

Spend your mealtimes and money supporting Black-owned businesses in your community this Juneteenth. Apps like EatOkra or directory sites like The Internationalist are trusted sources for finding Black-owned restaurants, bakeries and other eateries across the county.

11. Attend a Storytelling Event

Storytelling is central to African-American culture and has been for hundreds of years. During slavery, enslaved people weren't permitted to read or write, so they relied on telling stories to pass down intergenerational wisdom and preserve cultural heritage. Attending one of these events today is a wonderful way to acknowledge traditions for Juneteenth.

12. Host a Party

Can't find a Juneteenth event in your area? Host a party at your home to celebrate the holiday, embracing the principles of community and fellowship—two things central to the meaning of Juneteenth. Grill out, play games and have fun with your family and friends.

13. Participate in a Community Cleanup

Many towns host city-wide cleanups throughout the year to preserve and beautify community spaces. You'll work with other citizens to remove the trash, replant gardens, repair broken fixtures and more—creating a cleaner and more vibrant community to honor Juneteenth.

14. Support Local Black Artists

Branch out from your typical artistic tastes to support local Black artists in your community. Whether you attend an in-person gallery or purchase a print from a website, you invest your time and money into a good cause. Many artists will release Juneteenth collections or ones that revolve around Black history or culture.

Food Network Gives Fans a New Way to Experience One of Its Longest-Running Shows

Food Network is taking one of its most popular competition franchises on the road this summer.

Ahead of the return of The Great Food Truck Race, the network has partnered with Graza to launch The Great Food Truck Tour, a six-city event that will bring a custom food truck and special menu items to fans across the country.

The tour kicks off June 23 in New York City before making stops in Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Atlanta and Nashville through July 19.

According to the announcement, guests will be able to sample a menu created by Food Network featuring sliders and other food truck favorites designed to showcase Graza's new mayo line.

Graza's new Mayo, the brand's first-ever foray into mayonnaise.

The summer tour arrives just days before the return of The Great Food Truck Race, which is set to premiere its 19th season on July 26.

Hosted by Tyler Florence, the new season will feature eight competing teams featuring both savory and sweet food trucks. The competitors will begin their journey in Nashville before traveling through the Great Smoky Mountains, tackling weekly challenges designed to test not only their cooking skills but also their marketing and sales abilities.

This season also introduces a new elimination twist. Rather than sending one team home immediately, the bottom two trucks each week will face off in a "taste redemption battle" to determine who stays in the competition and who heads home.

The season will conclude at Churchill Downs in Louisville, where one team will win the $50,000 grand prize.

Ree Drummond Admits Her Family Is in 'Disbelief’ Over Son-in-Law’s Medical Diagnosis

The Pioneer Woman star Ree Drummond is speaking out about her son-in-law's medical diagnosis, sharing details about the difficult health journey her family is currently facing.

Mauricio Scott, husband of Drummond's oldest daughter Alex, was recently diagnosed with Alpha-Gal Syndrome. The medical condition hails from a tick bite.

In an essay for her Pioneer Woman website, Drummond explained what Alpha-Gal Syndrome is and what is being done to help Scott. She also shared new details about the lifestyle changes and ongoing support he will need in managing the condition.

Drummond wrote, "Mauricio, my son-in-law and Alex’s husband, was just diagnosed with Alpha-Gal syndrome, which is an increasingly common allergy that can develop after a tick bite. I have heard about Alpha-Gal over the past couple of years, but like many things you hear about in passing, I haven't given it much thought except that distant sense that it's definitely not something anyone in my world would want to be afflicted with."

Scott reportedly was bitten by a tick on the Drummond ranch. This is a common occurrence, so after he found the tick on his body he removed it.

"The good news is that Alpha-Gal is manageable; one just has to be aware of the foods to avoid. The bad news is that the foods Mauricio has to avoid are the ones he loves most in the world," Drummond continued.

The tick that carries the disease is called a lone star tick. It has a white dot on its back.

After returning home from the ranch, Scott went back to work on a Thursday and ate a burger for lunch. He had serious stomach pain thereafter.

Drummond wrote, "Not just a little stomachache, but a burning kind of pain that he didn't recognize. Alex says Mauricio isn’t usually dramatic about things like that, which made it stand out to her even more."

The next day, the couple ate steak tacos for dinner. Scott had the same reaction after the meal.

On Saturday, the couple enjoyed a baby sprinkle for their second child, a boy, given by family and friends. Scott ate brisket and had the same reaction.

It was then that Alex's friend told the couple they sensed red meat was the culprit. Scott avoided the food for a few days and seemed to feel better. A medical test ultimately diagnosed the condition.

Drummond wrote, "We were all immediately bummed for him! There were a lot of 'NO WAYs' and a few four-letter words of disbelief. There’s no other way to say it: Mauricio loves ribs, steaks, burgers, tacos, and all the things one would expect a person in our family to love, so again… we were all so bummed for him."

"Pork is also on the list of meat that trigger the allergy, so bacon, pork ribs, carnitas...all of those faves are out. The allergic reactions can range from stomach pain to hives to severe anaphylaxis, so it's definitely considered a condition to take seriously."

According to the Cleveland Clinic, Alpha-Gal syndrome (AGS) can go away, but it is not guaranteed. For many people, the allergy improves or fully resolves within 1 to 5 years, provided they avoid further tick bites and strict triggers.

It's hard to imagine anyone else in the role today, but a major Hollywood star was originally offered the lead in the 1994 blockbuster, Forrest Gump.

Tom Hanks was ultimately cast in the title role of the simple-minded and deeply sincere Forrest Gump, giving a performance that remains one of the most recognizable in movie history. Looking back, it's difficult to imagine anyone else bringing the beloved character to life, but that was almost the case, according to Far Out Magazine.

John Travolta was offered Forrest Gump at a pivotal moment in his career, following the success of the 1989 comedy Look Who's Talking. Before that, the actor had endured a string of box office disappointments after 1980's Urban Cowboy. Although he remained a familiar face in films like Stayin' Alive, Perfect, and Two of a Kind, he had yet to reclaim his status as one of Hollywood's biggest stars.

The reason Travolta turned down the role was to star in another film, 1994's Pulp Fiction. He portrayed Vincent Vega in the Quentin Tarantino smash, alongside Samuel L. Jackson and Uma Thurman.

‘Happy Days’ Star Thought His Career Was ‘Over’ After Hit Sitcom Ended

Henry Winkler became a household name after landing the role of Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli on Happy Days. The actor played the leather-jacketed, tough-guy character from 1974 to 1984 on the hit ABC sitcom, spawning catchphrases such as “Aaaay,” and “Sit on It,” as well as the "jump the shark" phenomenon.

The Fonzie character was so popular that producers considered changing the name of the show to Fonzie’s Happy Days. Even without the name change, Winkler became a superstar, and Fonzie remains one of the most iconic pop culture figures in TV history more than 50 years later.

Still, when Happy Days ended its 11-season run, Winkler feared it was the end of his career.

“After Happy Days finished, I'm sitting in my office,” Winkler, 80, recently shared on Ted Danson’s Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast. “All I'm getting are Fonzie-like [offers]. Like, I have no idea, am I ever going to do anything that is as powerful? And I went dark. I went dark. I thought, I have no idea what I'm going to do, whether I could do it again, and I'm over.”

Fearing he would forever be typecast as Fonzie, Winkler launched a production company with the help of his lawyer, Skip Brittenham III, but he did so reluctantly.

"I said, 'I can't do that. I don’t understand one thing about producing or the business. I only know how to do what I'm doing,’” Winkler recalled telling his lawyer. "He said, ‘You’ll learn.’”

The actor ultimately forged on and became an executive producer on the action series MacGyver from 1985 to 1992.

"First show I ever produced,” Winkler told Danson in the interview. “And you learn there are things I can do."

Winkler also explained that the greatest thing he ever did was learn how to “pivot.” “And when you pivot, the universe opens up and all of this generous stardust falls on you,” he said.

The stardust fell hard. Not only did Winkler make his mark as a prolific producer, but he shed his Fonzie leather for an Emmy-winning role as Gene Cousineau in the HBO series Barry. He also hosts the popular History Channel docu-series Hazardous History. Decades after wrapping his role as Fonzie, retirement is the furthest thing from Winkler's mind.

Winkler is long past his days of being typecast, but he once revealed that at the height of his Fonzie fame, he turned down one of the biggest film roles of the ‘70s—the role of Danny Zuko in Grease—because it was another greaser-like character. The role ultimately went to John Travolta.

“In my pathetic mind, I thought to myself, ‘I have now been the Fonz for 10 years,’” Winkler explained on Kelly Ripa’s Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast in 2024. “‘I'm now gonna play him again in the movies? I'm gonna be so typecast. I will never get work again.’"

“So what happened?” Winkler continued. “I go home. I relax. I have a V8. John Travolta goes home and buys a plane.”

Lucille Ball was known for her no-nonsense approach to television production. The I Love Lucy star was the driving force behind Desilu, the production company she co-founded with her then-husband Desi Arnaz. In addition to I Love Lucy, Desilu produced iconic series such as Mannix, Mission: Impossible, and Star Trek.

In a June 2026 interview with CBS Sunday Morning, former child star Bill Mumy (Lost In Space) recalled working with Ball on another Desilu series—The Greatest Show on Earth. The actor admitted that while he was initially “nervous” around Ball, he saw a sweet, motherly side of her on the set of the 1963 ABC drama series.

“Walt Disney and Lucille Ball were the two that made me nervous because I was very much aware of who they were," Mumy, 72, recalled of his days as a child star. “Everybody saw Lucy on TV all the time.”

“I did an hour-long dramatic episode with Lucy, which was her dramatic television debut,” he continued. “It was an episode of a series she produced called The Greatest Show on Earth, Jack Palance. It was a circus show. And I remember that she and I were in every scene. It was kind of about me. And I was intimidated to work with Lucy. She was a very powerful presence on the set. She was the boss.”

“But I'll tell you the best thing about working with Lucy,” Mumy shared, before getting emotional. “We were filming on Halloween, and at about 4:00 in the afternoon, she said to the whole crew, she said, ‘You know, it's Halloween, and my kids want to go trick-or-treating and I'll bet you Billy wants to go trick-or-treating, so we're going to wrap now.’ And that was so great, right? I mean, that was really great. … It was very sweet of her.”

Mumy was just nine years old when he appeared in the 1963 Greatest Show on Earth episode “Lady in Limbo,” playing Jeff, an animal trailer's orphaned son, opposite Ball’s motherly character Kate Reynolds.

Mumy is not the only child actor who has fond memories of working with Ball. Actor Patrick Labyorteaux (Little House on the Prairie) recently recalled playing Ball's grand-nephew, Peter, in the film Mame.

In a video posted to his Patrick Labyorsheaux YouTube channel, Labyorteaux, 60, remembered Ball as a loving presence on the set of the film, despite the older actors being intimidated by her.

"It was a huge, wonderful experience for me because even though I was very young, I think I was like seven or eight, all of my scenes were with Lucille Ball and she was amazing," he said. "She was super protective. She always held my hand. We were in all the scenes together. I was always right next to her, and she just really took care of me."

Labyorteaux added that Ball stood up for him when he had to film under extremely bright and hot lights. “She really fought for me,” he said. “She was a sweetheart.”

The actor also shared that the I Love Lucy legend gave him a special gift when the film wrapped.

"At the end of production, she gave me this Mickey Mouse watch, which I still have today," Labyorteaux said. "She was truly a sweetheart to me, even though I know she could be threatening to other people, but she was very protective, very sweet."

1974 Classic Rock Hit, Inspired by Run-In With Truckers, Remains a Road Trip Anthem 52 Years Later

In the 1970s, Bachman-Turner Overdrive were known for high-driving songs such as “Takin’ Care of Business” and “Roll on Down the Highway." But one of their road-themed songs was inspired by a real-life driving incident.

The song, “Let It Ride,” appeared on the album Bachman–Turner Overdrive II. Written by Randy Bachman and Fred Turner, the guitar-driven song featured a thumping drum groove and a hook-driven chorus that made it a road trip favorite. “Let It Ride” peaked at No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1974 and remains an anthem for the highway more than 52 years later.

“Let It Ride” was inspired after the Bachman Turner-Overdrive band members had a run-in with some truckers while driving to New Orleans for a tour with the Doobie Brothers.

Speaking on the Vinyl Tap Show Every Song Tells a Story, Bachman recalled that he was flying down the highway when a semi-trailer pulled in front of him, and then another drove up next to him.

“They kind of have me blocked in. So I'm about to fall back, and then another one pulls in behind me,” the Canadian rocker shared. “Our license plate says friendly Manitoba. These three guys have us boxed in. They decide to go about 35 miles an hour to see how friendly the friendly Manitobans are. This goes on for like an hour and a half. We can't get out of this little box on the freeway. They won't let us out.”

Bachman recalled that he followed the truckers off an exit to get gas. “Fred Turner and I are the big guys in BTO," he explained. "We're going to have an aggressive word with this truck driver because him and his buddies were talking to each other on the CBs and laughing and playing this trick on us.”

But the rocker noted that while “truckers are usually big guys … when this guy got out of his truck, he looked like a refrigerator with a head stuck on top.”

“Fred Turner and I decided we wouldn't be as aggressive as we thought we were going to be,” Bachman cracked. “We looked up at this guy and said, ‘Excuse me, sir.’ This guy's like 6'6. ‘Excuse me, sir. You're driving very carelessly, and you had us boxed in there.' And he said, ‘Oh, we're just testing you friendly Manitobans and you really nice Canadians to see how nice you are. It's no big deal. Why don't you just let it ride?’”

The BTO bandmates liked the sound of the “let it ride” phrase, and the rest is history.
