Aug. 18 will now forever harbor special meaning for NASCAR fans. Today marks the first Kyle Busch Day, a tribute to the two-time Cup Series champion who died unexpectedly last May.

At just 41, Busch’s death sent shockwaves through the racing world. After his sudden passing, which followed severe bacterial pneumonia that rapidly progressed into sepsis, the sport has continued to find ways to honor one of its most memorable drivers.

So, today, NASCAR and the broader motorsports community are celebrating the generational talent and future Hall of Famer with 63 Cup wins on what is now Kyle Busch Day.

According to Motor Biscuit, via Yahoo Sports, the 8/18 date nods to the two numbers Busch made famous during his Cup Series career: No. 8 with Richard Childress Racing and No. 18 with Joe Gibbs Racing. His No. 18 was also famously associated with longtime sponsor M&M’s.

To further celebrate the day, NASCAR is also airing a marathon of Busch’s greatest moments on its streaming channel.

Nearly three months after Busch’s death, his family is also taking a moment to both celebrate the newly anointed day and remember their loved one.

Taking to Instagram, Busch’s wife, Samantha Busch, posted a carousel of images, with each snap featuring one thing “that makes Kyle, Kyle.” The carousel includes wedding pics, candid selfies, racing shots, and more, and ends with three words: “One of one.”

“Today, on 8/18, we celebrate Kyle Busch Day ❤️,” she wrote in the caption. “The world knew Rowdy, the champion, the competitor, the bow, and that unmistakable personality. But I was lucky enough to know every side of Kyle, especially the ones the world didn’t always get to see.”

She continued, “How do you take almost 20 years of loving someone and somehow capture what made them them in eight slides? You can’t. There are a million little things that made Kyle who he was, and those little things are what I find myself missing the most. So today, I hope we celebrate all of Kyle. The things that made the world love him and the things that made the kids and I so incredibly lucky to call him ours.”

She concluded with, “There will never be another Rowdy, but more than anything, there will never be another Kyle. My best friend, my other half, the daddy to our babies and the person I thought I would grow old beside. I love you and miss every single piece of you. ❤️ #KyleBuschDay #ForeverRowdy”

Busch’s 11-year-old son, Brexton Busch, also shared a tribute on Instagram. In his carousel, he leaned into the No. 18 and what the numeral has meant to him his entire life. Across several images, Brexton explained how the simple 1-8 holds deep significance for him.

“18. My favorite number not only because it’s my birthday, but also because I saw my dad kick everyone’s butt in it almost every week growing up,” he wrote in the caption. “I wanted to be just like him, and I chose to race it when I started racing. While I wanted to be like him, he wanted me to be better than him. He taught me everything he knows, worked on my cars, spotted me, and even raced against me 8 times while he drove the 8. He beat me more than I beat him, but he knew the score would be in my favor sooner rather than later. I know he is proud of me. 8.18 is a reflection of him and what he instilled in me. Every race is for him.”

Brexton began racing competitively in 2020 at age 5 in the Beginner Box Stock division at Millbridge and Mountain Creek Speedways. Just a month into his racing career, he nabbed his first official victory at Mountain Creek Speedway.

After his father’s death, the No. 8 took on even more meaning for the Busch family. Richard Childress Racing temporarily retired the number, saying that it would be reserved for Brexton when he’s ready to race in NASCAR, transforming the infinity-shaped number into a potential forever link between father and son.

All parents (and people in general) get overwhelmed and emotionally dysregulated. They raise their voice sometimes. They say something they wish they hadn’t. It’s natural, understandable and common. 

What matters, and what truly affects the relationship and your child’s sense of self and perception of the world, is how you act after that “rupture.” 

There’s one golden response child psychologists recommend you implement afterward, and it’s not just a general apology. It helps children feel emotionally safe, both in the moment and in the future. It helps them realize that relationships will have tough moments, but that doesn’t mean the relationship is over or that either person is unlovable. 

Ahead, child psychologists explain the one thing parents should do after losing their temper (and how to do it), how skipping it can hurt your child’s inner voice, some empathy and a few tips that can prevent yelling in the first place.

The Single Most Important Parenting Strategy: What Is ‘Repair’?

The most important strategy after a rupture is repair. 

“Repair is the opposite of pretending a mistake didn’t happen or promising it won’t happen again,” says Dr. Caroline Danda, PhD, a licensed psychologist with over two decades of clinical experience with children, teens and families. “It’s what you do when you identify there’s a problem, see what’s gone wrong and go through the process of making it right.”

It’s a healing, relational method that teaches children a life lesson, too. 

“Repair tells a child’s nervous system, ‘Our relationship is safe, even when we have hard moments,’” says Dr. Allison Brazendale, PsyD, a licensed clinical psychologist for children and families and the creator of the FLEXED Method, which informs her insights here. “It’s an opportunity to reconnect, strengthen trust and show a child that mistakes do and are not the be-all-end-all.”

Plus, for what it’s worth, they say that choosing to repair after yelling can help the relationship grow more than if there had been no rupture in the first place.

Why Letting a ‘Rupture’ Fester Damages a Child’s Inner Voice

A rupture may seem like a one-time argument, but for a kid, it can cause more intense and long-lasting problems. The psychological effects of yelling at kids are real. When kids hear an angry tone, see an upset facial expression or feel abandoned, they begin to wonder if they’re still safe. Basically, your emotional dysregulation dysregulates their emotions.

“Those subtle shifts can signal danger to their nervous system,” Dr. Brazendale explains. “As their brain moves into protection mode, anxiety rises, cognitive flexibility decreases and it becomes much harder for them to think clearly, solve problems or regulate their emotions.”

Dr. Danda agrees.

“No one is choosing to react badly,” she clarifies. “The brain has simply shifted into survival mode.”

Children begin to make inaccurate and harmful meaning out of the rupture, too. For example, when a parent feels overwhelmed and “acts out,” they may think “I’m too much,” “I’m bad” or “People leave when I have big feelings.” Then, they may feel shame, or like they’re misunderstood and unloved, Dr. Danda adds. They wonder if love is conditional. 

That’s where repair comes in. It interrupts and changes that narrative. 

“Instead of believing their emotions are too much for others, they learn that relationships are strong enough to hold big feelings,” Dr. Brazendale tells Parade. “Repair restores relational safety.”

Repair does the same thing for a child’s self-image.

“A child learns that having big emotions, or reacting badly in the moment, doesn’t make them a bad person,” Dr. Danda adds. 

If you’ve ever walked away without repairing, try not to worry too much, she continues. A missed repair doesn’t define your relationship with your child—it’s the pattern that matters

A 3-Step Guide to a Perfect ‘Repair’ (No ‘Buts’ Allowed)

A solid repair takes three steps, psychologists say.

1. Regulate yourself 

First, utilize coping skills to regulate your emotions so you can regulate your child’s.

“Take a minute to pause, catch your breath and settle before you try to talk to your child again,” Dr. Danda says. “Bonus: When you take a minute to pause, it also gives your child time to settle.”

Then, be mindful of what you’re going to say and how.

“Remind yourself to be flexible and switch your lens from viewing the behavior as ‘defiance’ and instead to ‘anxiety,’” Dr. Brazendale suggests. “Your tone, posture, pacing and facial expression communicate safety long before your words do.”

2. Take responsibility 

Next, acknowledge—to yourself and your child—what you did. Maybe you raised your voice, got frustrated, made a negative comment or even scared them a bit. 

“Avoid blaming your child or explaining away your behavior,” Dr. Brazendale says. “Taking responsibility models accountability while showing your child that mistakes can be acknowledged without shame.”

Dr. Danda adds an important reminder for the future: “You can label a behavior, but not the child.”

3. Restore connection

Last but not least, reconnect. Offer warmth, validation, presence and praise. Offer a hug, return to what you were doing together or just sit with them.

“You might say, ‘I’m sorry I yelled. I was overwhelmed, and that wasn’t how I wanted to handle it. We both have big feelings sometimes, and I appreciate you being flexible and hearing me out,’” Dr. Brazendale suggests.

If you do go back to the problem, do so mindfully.

“Sometimes it means going back to the original issue and problem-solving it together, more calmly this time,” Dr. Danda says. “Avoid spending too much time rehashing the rupture.”

‘Good Parents Have Hard Moments’: How To Break the Cycle of Parental Guilt

The main thing Dr. Brazendale hopes parents remember is this: “You do not have to be a perfect parent to raise a secure child.” 

You’re going to lose your patience and “mess up,” she says. You’re going to have days when you’re exhausted, overwhelmed and reactive. You’re human.

“Children are not looking for perfection,” she continues. “They need adults who are willing to come back after hard moments and show them that relationships are strong enough to recover.”

Both child psychologists “get it” and even have personal experience.

“Despite everything I know about parenting and child psychology as a child psychologist who does this day in and day out, there are plenty of times when I’ve lost it and didn’t handle things the right way,” Dr. Danda admits. “I didn’t always repair it the right way, either.”

She encourages you to settle down and figure out how to move through it rather than beating yourself up or avoiding the issue. 

Practical Steps To Stop the Yell Before It Starts

After a repair, you may wonder how to stop yourself from yelling in the future (or at least reduce its frequency). Child psychologists share tips on how to do so.

• Pause before responding. Take a breath, then respond mindfully and warmly.
• Regulate yourself by relaxing your body, taking a slow breath or splashing cold water on your face. Moving your body rhythmically also helps, whether it’s walking, washing dishes, pulling weeds or tensing and releasing your muscles.
• Tell your child when you need a minute to regulate so they don’t feel abandoned when you walk away.
• Notice your thoughts without judging or ruminating on them. Consider what you can control and what’s a fact versus a feeling.
• Ground yourself by paying attention to your senses.

By taking these steps and remembering what parenting rupture and repair looks like, you set yourself, your child and your relationship up well. 

“Every time you choose steady leadership over emotional reactivity, you are helping build the emotional flexibility your child will carry into adulthood,” Dr. Brazendale says.

Check your cabinets! A salad dressing has been recalled due to possible contamination with bacteria.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on August 14 that Salata Dressings’ Jalapeno Avocado Dressing is being recalled because of a risk of contamination with Salmonella.

Salmonella is a group of bacteria that causes illness after ingesting contaminated water or food. Common symptoms include fever, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), nausea, vomiting, headache, chills, and abdominal pain, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Infected people usually show signs of the illness within 8 to 72 hours after exposure. In rare circumstances, Salmonella can enter the bloodstream and result in severe illnesses, including arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.

The Texas-based company sold the product at HEB stores across the state. The dressing was packaged in a 12 oz plastic bottle with a black cap. The recalled item was distributed between July 13 and August 5.

The possibly contaminated product has a Best By date of 11/05/2026, 11/13/2026, 11/18/2026, or 11/25/2026 located at the top of the label.

No illnesses have been reported from this recall.

Salata Dressings announced the recall on August 11 after the company’s supplier informed them that the diced jalapeños used in the dressing may have been contaminated with Salmonella.

“Upon receiving this notice, we immediately identified all affected finished product, ceased further distribution, quarantined the product, destroyed the product and notified HEB immediately, via phone call and then a follow up newsletter summary,” the company stated in the FDA announcement.

Consumers who have purchased Jalapeno Avocado Dressing from HEB are asked to return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund.

When ZZ Top released “La Grange” in 1973, the song not only changed the trajectory of the trio’s career, it helped establish the band’s sound and showcased drummer Frank Beard’s signature backbeat, an essential part of the band’s bluesy, muscular sound, including on “La Grange.” The song would go on to become ZZ Top’s first big hit, but its inspiration is classic ZZ Top.

ZZ Top released “La Grange” in 1973. Inspired by the legendary Chicken Ranch brothel outside La Grange, Texas, the song itself grew out of the band’s bluesy sound. Billy Gibbons, the band’s lead vocalist, main songwriter and guitar player, described the song’s easily recognizable riff as the heart of the song, while the track’s groove drew from blues masters like John Lee Hooker’s “Boogie Chillen.”

The Chicken Ranch was a staple of Texas folklore and had operated for decades before closing in 1973. The brothel also became the inspiration for the Broadway musical The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Despite never actually naming the Chicken Ranch in the song, ZZ Top turned the local establishment into an iconic blues-rock song.

“La Grange” was released as a single from Tres Hombres and reached No. 41 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1974, ZZ Top’s first Top 50 hit and their first single to successfully climb the music charts. The success of the song helped Tres Hombres become the band’s first Top 10 album and helped establish the band nationally.

A decade later, MTV would transform ZZ Top into international superstars with songs like “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” “Sharp Dressed Man” and “Legs,” but “La Grange” was their first breakout hit and established ZZ Top’s blues-rock identity.

The combination of Beard’s propulsive drumming, Gibbons’ gritty guitar work and Dusty Hill’s bass became ZZ Top’s sound. “La Grange” established the blueprint.

The trio of Frank Beard, Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill remained together for over 50 years, one of rock music’s most enduring lineups. In a statement released on Tuesday following Beard’s death at the age of 77, Gibbons called Beard “a great friend and collaborator,” also calling him “one of the most naturally innovative drummers and a great and true son of Texas.”

Gibbons also called Beard’s signature backbeat the “key to keeping ZZ on top.” Beard’s backbeat became the heart of the band, but it was the 1973 hit inspired by a Texas brothel that established the classic ZZ Top sound.

Twain has emphatically stated that the lyric wasn’t meant as an attack on the Thelma & Louise star, nor was she trying to pick on him. She simply thought he represented how society could become overly impressed by fame, beauty and celebrity. In recent years, Twain even spotted actor Ryan Reynolds in the crowd at one of her shows and changed the line to include his name.

“That Don’t Impress Me Much” appeared on Twain’s album Come On Over, the album that would transform her from a country superstar to a global pop music sensation.

Pearl Jam refused to release it as a single, but that didn’t stop this emotional track from becoming one of the most beloved songs in the band’s catalog.

The emotional rock ballad “Black,” was featured on the Pearl Jam’s now-famous debut album Ten in 1991, and even though the band chose not to commercialize the song as a single, it has found its way back on the charts.

According to Billboard’s newest chart standings dated the week of Aug. 22, “Black” has once again appeared on the Hard Rock Streaming Songs chart, coming in at No. 18 this week, more than 35 years after its release. It marks the song’s 28th non-consecutive week spent on the chart.

Pearl Jam’s “Black” — often considered one of the group’s saddest songs ever — has experienced a noticeable resurgence lately, thanks in part to its rising popularity on TikTok, as listeners from a whole new generation are being introduced to the grungy, emotional track.

Just recently, the song reached its peak position at No. 12 on the Hard Rock Streaming Songs chart in June 2026, while its previous chart history includes a peak position at No. 3 on the Mainstream Rock Airplay chart (1993) and No. 20 on the Alternative Airplay chart (1993).

Following the success of their debut album, Pearl Jam’s record label reportedly insisted that “Black” be released as a single, but the band was dead-set against it, due to the song’s personal nature.

“There are certain songs that come from emotion,” frontman Eddie Vedder told Rolling Stone back in 1993. “It’s got nothing to do with melody or timing or even words; it has to do with the emotion behind the song. You can’t put out 50 percent. You have to sing them from a feeling. Like ‘Alive’ and ‘Jeremy’ to this day — and ‘Black.’ Those songs, they tear me up.”

As we continue to mourn the loss of Eric Dane, eyes are on his legacy. Part of that involves his children, and his younger daughter, Georgia Dane, is about to follow in the footsteps of both her parents. The best thing is that she’ll get to do it with her mother, Rebecca Gayheart.

The two are set to star together in a new Lifetime movie, which will premiere in September. It’s part of the “Strength of a Lifetime” slate, which involves three movies that are all based on bizarre and traumatic real-life events.

Gayheart and Dane will play a mother-daughter duo in The Ocean Between Them, TV Insider reports. In fact, Dane plays the younger daughter in the family, setting up for some realistic dynamics on the set. Jessica Lord will join them as the elder daughter, Miranda, who disappears at sea while in Belize on a family vacation.

Based on true events, the story follows Miranda as she heads out kayaking alone after an argument with her family. While out, she is struck by an unexpected storm, and part of the movie is spent following her fight for survival.

Back at the resort, Joan, played by Gayheart, refuses to believe the worst about her daughter’s survival possibilities. She launches a relentless search, pushing her beyond her own limits. Lifetime states in the official logline for The Ocean Between Them that “both women discover extraordinary strength and the unbreakable bond that connects them — even across the vast ocean.”

This marks Dane’s acting debut, who is just 14 and recently graduated from middle school. Her elder sister, Billie, isn’t an actor, but she has expressed interest in the entertainment industry. She is focused more on dance and modeling.

The Ocean Between Them is one of three movies coming up on Lifetime’s “ripped from the headlines” series. Robin Roberts Presents Angel in the Rubble: The Genelle Guzman Story will premiere first on Sept. 12, 2026, and will star Sherri Shepherd and Dondré Whitfield, telling the true story of Genelle Guzman, who was the last survivor pulled out of the World Trade Center rubble.

The second of the three movies is Sole Survivor of Flight 119, which will star Joy Bryant and Sarah Wayne Callies. It’s based on Tammy L. Kling’s memoir about being the only survivor of a fatal plane crash in the Mexican jungle and needing to rely on her own survival skills to get home, and it will air on Sept. 19, 2026.

The Ocean Between Them will premiere on Sept. 26, 2026, at 8/7c on Lifetime.

Pumpkin spice may still be the unofficial flavor of fall, but apple pie has always had a pretty strong argument for the job. Warm apples, cinnamon and that unmistakable baked dessert flavor are basically sweater weather in edible form. And this year, RXBAR is giving apple its turn in the seasonal spotlight.

Of course, putting “Apple Pie” on the wrapper of a protein bar sets some pretty high expectations. No one is expecting flaky pastry and a scoop of vanilla ice cream from something designed to be shoved into a gym bag, but apple pie has a pretty distinctive flavor profile to live up to. When I got the chance to try the newest fall flavor from RXBAR ahead of the season, I was curious to see just how close it would come to the real thing.

Here’s what I thought of the RXBAR Nut Butter & Oat Apple Pie flavor, and whether it’s worth adding to your fun seasonal snacks list.

What’s in the New RXBAR Apple Pie Flavor?

The new Nut Butter & Oat Apple Pie bar is made with whole-grain oats, cashews, egg whites and wildflower honey. According to RXBAR, the flavor features notes of cooked apple, warm cinnamon and pastry. Each bar contains 10 grams of protein and is a good source of fiber.

It’s also part of the RXBAR Nut Butter & Oat line rather than the brand’s traditional protein bar lineup. This line combines soft-rolled oats, nut butter, egg whites and honey, and currently includes the flavors Honey Cinnamon Peanut Butter, Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter and Blueberry Cashew Butter.

The Apple Pie flavor is the first new seasonal offering from RXBAR in more than four years, and it’s arriving alongside an old fall favorite. Pumpkin Spice, which first debuted in 2015, is returning for another limited run this year.

But with my apologies to pumpkin spice, I was far more interested in seeing what RXBAR could do with apple pie.

What Does the RXBAR Apple Pie Bar Taste Like?

The apple pie flavor doesn’t necessarily scream “grandma’s famous Dutch apple pie” on the first bite, but the inspiration is definitely there. The combination of apple and warm cinnamon gives it that familiar fall flavor, only translated into RXBAR form.

To me, it landed somewhere between a slice of pie and a hearty bowl of apple-cinnamon oatmeal—not overly sweet or dessert-like, but satisfying, flavorful and decidedly autumnal.

The texture helps sell that comparison. It’s still thick and chewy as you’d expect from an RXBAR, but the oats give this one a little more texture than many of the brand’s other bars. That makes it feel particularly substantial and work well with the apple and cinnamon flavors.

There’s enough sweetness and baked apple flavor to make the apple pie moniker make sense, but not so much that it feels like you’re having dessert disguised as breakfast. Instead, it tastes like a fall-flavored snack that takes its cues from its namesake.

And that’s probably exactly what you want from an apple pie protein bar.

If you’re expecting an RXBAR to somehow replicate a warm, sticky-sweet slice of apple pie, you’re probably setting yourself up for disappointment. But if you like apple-cinnamon flavors—and especially if you’re already a fan of the dense, chewy texture of an RXBAR—this one delivers.

I particularly liked that it didn’t lean too heavily into sweetness. The apple, cinnamon and oats make it taste cozy and distinctly fall without turning it into something that feels more like dessert than a snack.

It’s also a nice change of pace in a season when it seems like everything gets the pumpkin spice treatment. Pumpkin may get most of the attention once the leaves start changing, but apple deserves some room in the fall flavor conversation too.

My verdict? It may not replace a freshly baked apple pie, but for something you can toss in your bag and eat on the go, it’s a pretty satisfying taste of fall.

Alyson Court—who had acted professionally since she was a child, beginning with her first television role in Mr. Dressup in 1984—decided to leave The Big Comfy Couch in 1996 ahead of the sixth season because she wanted to withdraw from public scrutiny and experience more personal freedom as a woman in her early twenties. Court briefly returned six years later for her sixth and final season.

“It was at the end of season five and I was doing so much traveling around, representing the show. It was pre-everyone-having-a-camera-on-their-phone, but that whole trying to control my personal life started to set in,” Court told E! News about her decision to step away from the show. “Understandably so, it’s a kids’ property and you don’t want someone to take the wrong photo at the wrong time. But I was 22, 23 and I wanted to live my life and enjoy being a young adult.”

“I was finding it was very oppressive because I’d never experienced that kind of control before. So, I was like, ‘I can’t do this anymore. I need to go,'” she added. “And we were done. They weren’t expecting to come back. It wasn’t until 2002 that we did. I was married by this point, and pregnant. So, I was a responsible adult.”

However, don’t fully rule out a The Big Comfy Couch revival featuring the O.G. Loonette. “What I’d love to see is to introduce a new character who takes over the couch. I could certainly still be Loonette, but, you know, Loonette has grown,” Court shared with E! News. “And that way you could have consistency with the old episodes into the new ones. And then a new young character, I think, would be a lovely thing to see.”

SeatPick, a website that helps fans find and compare tickets for concerts, festivals, and live events across hundreds of marketplaces, recently analyzed Google Trends search interest across 18 music genres in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., over the previous 12 months ending Aug. 11, and what they found was an eclectic mix of Americans marching to the beat of their own drums.

The findings not only squash stereotypes, but they shed light on the nation’s metal-loving Mountain West and northern states, a South with wildly varied musical tastes, and a certain tiny state that apparently can’t decide between indie and folk music (nor should it have to).

Pop tops 13 states, more than any other genre, while heavy metal comes in surprisingly close behind with 11 states. And Country, despite more than 500,000 monthly searches nationwide, tops just four states.

“Promoters route tours on assumptions about where a genre belongs, and this data shows those assumptions are decades out of date,” Gilad Zilberman, the co-founder of SeatPick, said in a statement. “Wyoming and Montana are metal states. Maryland is a hip-hop state. If you’re booking a tour on a map drawn in the 1990s, you’re skipping the places that are actually searching for you.”

Overall, pop dominates the map, with 13 states ranking it No. 1. Heavy metal ranks second, with a total of 11 states turning to the hard rock subgenre. Country is where things again get interesting. It’s searched more than 500,000 times a month, roughly 10 times the volume of jazz, rock, or classical, yet tops only four states. Some more of the most surprising results include:

• Wyoming has the strongest metal search interest in the country.
• Iowa ranks only 37th nationally for pop interest.
• Nevada ranks third nationally for pop interest, but EDM wins the state.
• Rhode Island is the only tie, with indie and folk.
• Oregon is the only state where punk finishes first.
• Vermont loves its classical music.

SeatPick also identified the most-searched artist nationally within each genre. It is probably no surprise that Taylor Swift leads pop, while Morgan Wallen leads country. The two have been ruling the music charts turning every album drop into a massive sweep, even trading records for simultaneous Billboard dominance. Perhaps next year’s results will reveal this year’s enduring chart-topper, Ella Langley, a new top contender.

Bad Bunny, another no-brainer, leads the way for Latin. But some of the results are less expected, like Billie Eilish leading the rock category and Lady Gaga topping EDM. For a look at which artists are driving searches within each genre, see below.

In the end, the music map may not look the way fans expect, but that’s exactly what makes it so interesting. From the honky-tonks in Texas blaring Taylor Swift to the bungalows in Hawaii rocking out to Bob Marley to the cocktail bars of New York City bumping to Bad Bunny, the results suggest a nation as musically diverse as its people.

Lactic acid has been used in beauty for centuries. Cleopatra reportedly bathed in sour milk, which is naturally rich in it, for its skin-smoothing effects. It’s an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) derived from milk and fermented fruits that loosens the bonds between dead skin cells on the surface, making them easier to remove, revealing the brighter, smoother skin beneath.

Lactic acid also helps attract and hold moisture, which is part of why it tends to feel gentler and less drying than other acids. This is especially relevant for mature skin, which naturally produces less oil and loses moisture more quickly than younger skin. For women over 50, that dual action—exfoliating and hydrating at the same time—is particularly useful.

Aging skin benefits from exfoliation but doesn’t always tolerate aggressive formulas well. Lactic acid’s larger molecular size means it works more gradually than glycolic acid, making it a strong starting point for anyone who’s found chemical exfoliation irritating in the past.

What Is Lactic Acid and How Does It Work on the Skin?

“Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid, or AHA, that helps loosen the bonds between old, dull skin cells on the surface so they can shed more easily,” Palm tells Parade. “This process encourages brighter, smoother and more even-toned skin.”

What sets lactic acid apart from other AHAs is its humectant properties. “In addition to exfoliation, you’re also potentially getting a less stripped, tight feeling people sometimes associate with actives,” she explains.

It doesn’t just remove dead skin, it also helps the skin hold onto moisture, which is particularly valuable for mature skin that tends toward dryness.

Why lactic acid is different from other exfoliating acids

For women who have tried glycolic acid and found it too harsh, lactic acid is often the better fit.

Lactic acid doesn’t penetrate the skin as quickly or as aggressively as glycolic acid, Palm says, explaining, “This is why I consider lactic acid to be the gentler of the two. It’s a great option for those who are new to chemical exfoliation or have a mild sensitivity to more potent actives.”

However, Palm adds that other factors matter just as much as the acid type, sharing, “The overall formula, concentration, pH, etc.” all play a role in how a product performs on the skin.

How to add a lactic acid serum to your skincare routine

Palm recommends introducing any new acid gradually—once or twice a week to begin—and increasing frequency only if the skin remains calm and comfortable.

Apply it to clean skin before moisturizer, and always follow with SPF in the morning.

Benefits of Lactic Acid for Mature Skin

“The most immediate benefits are smoother texture and brighter skin,” Palm tells Parade. “With consistent use, lactic acid can also help improve the appearance of dullness, mild discoloration, fine lines and rough patches. Regular use may also help keep pores from becoming congested by reducing the buildup of dead surface cells.”

But it’s not the first choice for acne.

“I wouldn’t consider lactic acid as a primary acne treatment, especially for cystic or inflammatory acne, but it can be helpful with superficial congestion and uneven texture,” she explains.

She advises avoiding it on the same night as a retinoid or another exfoliant.

Who Should Use Lactic Acid, and Who Should Avoid It?

“Those with dry, dull or mildly uneven skin can benefit from incorporating lactic acid into their skincare routine,” Palm tells Parade. “It can also be a reasonable entry point for someone who has never used an exfoliating acid before.”

People with a compromised skin barrier should avoid it, though.

“A compromised skin barrier can look like skin that is actively peeling, sunburned, or irritated/inflamed,” Palm explains. “If you’re experiencing an eczema or rosacea flare, I would also stay away from lactic acid and other exfoliating acids, which can further compromise your skin barrier.”

She also advises avoiding lactic acid immediately after in-office procedures like peels, laser treatments or microneedling.

Here are some answers to commonly asked questions about lactic acid.

What percentage of lactic acid is actually effective?

“For an at-home product, concentrations around 5% can provide gentle exfoliation, while products in the 8-10% range may produce a more noticeable effect,” Palm says. “Higher concentrations don’t always mean a better product.”

The formula matters just as much as the percentage.

“A lower concentration that you can use consistently without inflammation is often much more beneficial than a very strong product that leaves your skin irritated, dry and flaky,” she adds.

What ingredients pair well with lactic acid?

“Hydrating and barrier-supportive ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, ceramides, and squalane pair well with lactic acid,” Palm tells Parade. “Niacinamide can also be a helpful companion, especially for patients focused on hydration and uneven tone.”

But use caution when “using lactic acid in the same routine as retinoids, other AHAs, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide or exfoliating scrubs. Layering several potentially irritating actives at once can overwhelm the skin, so I often recommend alternative nights as a more tolerable approach.”

Does lactic acid make skin more sensitive to the sun?

Yes—so SPF is even more important than usual. “Like other AHAs and chemical exfoliants, lactic acid can temporarily increase the skin’s sensitivity to UV exposure and make it easier to burn,” Palm explains.

“This is why I typically recommend it as part of a nighttime skincare routine,” she adds. “Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 is essential, along with hats, shade and other sun-protective measures.”
