A multi-layered concept comedy with a motley crew running all over Los Angeles, Gail Daughtery and the Celebrity Sex Pass is the latest absurdly raunchy, ridiculously hyper romp from director David Wain.

Wain’s previous films—like Wet Hot American Summer, Role Models and They Came Together—skewered big-screen tropes with satire and a smirk, and this one’s in a similar vein. It follows a young Midwestern hairstylist, Gail Daughtry (Zoey Deutch), who takes a fish-out-of-water trip to sunny California.

You see, Gail and her fiancé, Tom (Michael Cassidy) made a far-fetched deal, sort of, agreeing that if either of them could have a booty call with their celebrity crush, the other would be free to do the same—in other words, a celebrity sex pass. When Gail finds Tom bonking Jennifer Aniston in the back room of a bookstore, she heads to Tinseltown to hook up with actor John Hamm and "level the playing field."

In addition to Aniston and Hamm, who play themselves, there’s Henry Winkler, Weird AlYankovic and Penn Gillette. And isn’t that Paul Rudd as a wedding guest, giving a wink to the camera? Yes, it is!

There’s a guy (Robert Herjavec) from Shark Tank! Reno 911’s Thomas Lennon is a rock-star hairdresser, the master of the whip curl, who knows how to use his curling iron as a weapon. Sabrina Impacciatore, from The White Lotus, hams it up as an evil mastermind.

Zoey Deutch shines as the star

But the real standout here is Deutch. The daughter of actress Lea Thompson and director Howard Deutch embodies the movie’s enthusiasm, its embrace of wide-eyed adventure and its self-assurance that all the wacky comedy is hitting a bullseye. She “sells” it, hammering home the silliness with dynamic self-confidence. She’s come a long way since Disney’s The Suite Life on Deck in 2010!

There’s also a fateful briefcase switcheroo in an airport, a plot to collapse the world economy, bad guys chasing good guys, an abandoned Wild West set and a roll of 35mm camera film that becomes an inspirational touchstone. It feels like It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World meets with The Naked Gun, with a Mad Men reunion to boot.

On one level, it’s a sweeping, sexed-up mock-tail toast to Hollywood, with actors playing themselves, paparazzi (The Residence’s Ken Marino, who also co-wrote the movie) lurking in the bushes, bodyguards, a movie pitch and agents from Creative Artists Agency. To top it off, it’s also a loopy salute to one of the most classic films of all time.

What's the Wizard of Oz connection?

You don’t have to dig deep to see the connections to The Wizard of Oz. Gail is the Kansas girl, like Dorothy Gail in the 1939 film, who ventures into a place full of wonder and danger, on a mission with a posse of characters, trying to avoid pursuers—and wearing a pair of ruby red slippers. If you have trouble figuring out who, exactly, is standing in for the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion, Dorothy’s dog Toto, the Wicked Witch and the flying monkeys, stick around for the credits.

As for the Wizard himself, well, you’ll make the connection when one of the characters admits his insecurities about pretending to be someone he’s not, living “behind the curtain” of his fame—and certainly when he drops in later, via hot-air balloon.

Is Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass worth seeing?

In The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy didn’t sing about being “off to see the Wizard” to hop into the sack with him. But Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass doesn’t want us to think too hard about that, or about anything. See it for the laughs, and don't take it literally. It just wants to nudge us into some chuckles at its outlandish premise, its random randy-ness, its cavalcade of in-jokes, and its weird, wonderfully wacky spin on someplace way, way over the rainbow—where sex with the stars is a thing, some dreams really do come true, and Weird Al Yankovic hops off his golf cart to chase interlopers away with an Uzi.

Last year, I was lucky enough to be invited to sail on the Sun Princess, the first Sphere-class ship in Princess Cruises' line, and one billed as the reigning "foodiest destination at sea." While I'd never set foot on a cruise before, I happily accepted the challenge. After all, what’s not to love about a Mediterranean itinerary making stops in Naples, Istanbul, and Mykonos?

After seven days sailing past some of the prettiest coastlines I’d ever seen, I was completely hooked. Between testing out Princess’ new specialty restaurants—from Catch by Rudi to Love by Britto—and experiencing the mind-bending Spellbound by Magic Castle evening, I finally understood why cruising has such a massive, fiercely loyal fanbase. The ability to wake up in a new country every morning, experience world-class dining and completely hand over your stress to an all-inclusive tab makes it an incredible value. For busy working parents in the sandwich generation, it's practically the perfect vacation.

So, when an invitation arrived to head back to the Mediterranean a year later to cover the biggest ship at sea—Royal Caribbean's brand-new Legend of the Seas—saying yes was a no-brainer. But this time around, I’m looking at my suitcase with a lot more wisdom. After packing for and surviving 10 more cruises in other destinations over the last 12 months, I’ve realized just how many rookie mistakes I made that first time out.

As I get ready to board my second Mediterranean voyage, here are the major cruise pitfalls I am actively fixing:

Over-Scheduling the Port Days

When I set sail the first time, I was completely overwhelmed by the sheer volume of choices. I’d never been to Naples, the Amalfi Coast, Turkey or Greece, and I was desperate to maximize every single second on shore. I fell face-first into cruise newbie mistake number one: booking an all-day, marathon excursion for every single stop.

Whether we were docking in Naples, Istanbul, Crete, or Mykonos, I had an eight-hour tour locked in. The reality? It was exhausting. Every morning became a high-stress race against the clock—waking up at dawn, battling the crowds at the buffet and the espresso bar, scrambling to find the right gangway station, and making sure I had the exact documents in hand. From there, it was straight onto a bus with 40 strangers for an eight-hour tour that left very little time to actually take in the scenery.

While ship-sponsored excursions are an easy, seamless option, I wish I had spent some time researching traveler groups on social media to figure out the true crowd-favorites. This time, I'm keeping it chill. I want the freedom to simply wander through the gorgeous, pedestrian streets of Málaga or slow down for a long lunch in Cinque Terre. Excursions in every port are expensive, unnecessary and generate a ton of time anxiety—which is the absolute last thing you want on vacation.

Treating Ship Excursions as the Only Option

It's the ultimate cruise conundrum: Do you pay a premium for the ship’s official excursions to guarantee you won’t be left behind on the dock? Or do you venture out on your own via third-party sites—or even just wing it at the pier—to find a cheaper, more authentic local experience?

The answer is that it really depends on the destination. On my first trip, a few seasoned travel creators on board bypassed the ship's menu and booked a private, third-party horseback riding tour along the coast of Crete, returning with incredible stories of swimming in the sea with the horses. They knew exactly what they were doing, kept the timeline short and right in the middle of our off-shore window, and made it back with hours to spare.

On the flip side, I was deeply grateful that my all-day tour of Pompeii, Sorrento and Capri was booked directly through the cruise line. It was a logistically packed itinerary involving high-speed ferries, massive tourist lines, and multiple moving parts where a lot could go wrong. And on a holiday weekend, it did—traffic backed up, and our tour ran two hours late. Because it was a sanctioned cruise excursion, our guide was in constant contact with the bridge, and the ship waited for us.

For this upcoming trip, I’m doing the homework ahead of time so I can confidently explore the local neighborhoods on foot, while keeping a strict eye on the clock.

Waiting to Book Restaurants and Shows Onboard

Luckily, I had an experienced team helping me map out my first sailing, but on subsequent trips when I’ve been left to my own devices, I made the mistake of trying to "wing it" when it came to specialty dining and marquee shows. Any veteran cruiser reading this right now is probably shaking their head.

Before you even think about heading to the safety muster station, hitting the welcome buffet or filming a room tour for your Instagram Reels, you need to find a quiet corner, log into the ship’s Wi-Fi, and open the app. The most sought-after entertainment on these mega-ships—like Legend of the Seas' high-octane Shockwave production or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, or Norwegian Cruise Line's massive Elton John tribute shows—will reliably sell out on day one. On a recent MSC Cruises sailing, I ended up going straight to the concierge desk to help me manually piece together a master schedule of dinner times and theater reservations just to cut through the digital gridlock. If your cruise line allows you to lock in these reservations weeks before you fly out, do it the second your booking window opens.

Overpacking the Wardrobe

The second I found out I was heading to Europe last summer, visions of an effortless, linen-heavy "Euro-summer capsule wardrobe" completely took over my brain. I meticulously planned seven distinct daytime outfits, three separate swimsuit-and-cover-up combinations for the pool deck, more than seven upscale evening looks for formal nights, and an embarrassing five or six pairs of shoes. I wanted to look professional, polished, and like a seasoned traveler who belonged on a luxury liner.

Instead, I ended up dragging a massive, overweight checked bag across the ancient cobblestones of Rome and hauling it through crowded customs lines. It was a total headache, and I spent the week watching smart, stylish passengers breeze past me with a single, sleek carry-on.

After a solid year of traveling on the water, I’ve finally mastered the art of the cruise edit. The trick is to pick a rigid, simple color palette—like crisp white, black and navy—and accent it with one or two fun pops of color. You truly only need a maximum of four versatile bottoms, four tops, four lightweight dresses and two swimsuits. As for footwear? Limit yourself to three pairs max, and make sure one of those is the supportive pair of sneakers you wear onto the airplane. You’ll still have plenty of outfit options, your back will thank you, and you’ll actually have leftover room in your bag to pack a few unique souvenirs from the local boutiques on shore.

Forgetting to Protect the Spontaneous Downtime

When you look at the glittering promotional videos for these massive new ships, it’s always the record-breaking features that grab the headlines—whether it's the high-tech culinary theaters like Royal Caribbean's Royal Railway or upscale partnerships like MSC's Eataly. Those marquee experiences are absolutely worth the hype, but some of the most memorable moments I’ve ever had at sea happened entirely in the quiet spaces in between.

It’s the hidden, adults-only infinity pool at the aft of the ship that feels like your own private deck because nobody else stumbled upon it. It's sitting at the dueling piano bar on Legend late at night, or sharing a great conversation over the best espresso martini of your life in a quiet lounge. It's watching an impromptu ABBA tribute set that somehow gets everyone from teenagers to grandmothers up and dancing together like no one is watching.

It's incredibly easy to overschedule your vacation to the point where it feels like a corporate itinerary. This time around, I am intentionally leaving blank spaces in my calendar. Some of the best parts of a cruise are the spontaneous, unscripted moments—the ones your phone never captures because you were too busy simply being in the moment.

We signed with Decca in 1954, and the first song that we recorded for Decca was ‘Rock Around the Clock,’ and 16 million records later, I think Dave Miller is probably sorry," Haley told DJ Red Robinson in 1966, according to American Songwriter.

In 1955, the song was featured in the film Blackboard Jungle, and that's when it rose in popularity among a younger generation of listeners. The track's energetic sound quickly became associated with the emerging rock 'n' roll movement, helping introduce the genre to millions of people around the world.

Once in a while the most inspiring song isn't the biggest chart-topper.

That has certainly been the case for Triumph's "Hold On." Released in 1979 on the Canadian rock band's breakthrough album Just a Game, the soaring power ballad never reached No. 1, yet it has endured for decades as one of Triumph's signature songs and one of classic rock’s most uplifting anthems.

Written by guitarist and vocalist Rik Emmett, "Hold On" delivers a message of perseverance in the face of hardship. Born in Afghanistan, author Khaled Hosseini developed the idea for a short story upon learning that the Taliban had banned kite flying in the country in 1999. Hosseini grew up flying kites as a child and found the ban to be unnecessarily cruel. The Kite Runner spans more than 30 years, telling the story of Amir, a rich boy from Kabul, and Hassan, who is the son of Amir's father's servant. There are certain singers whose voices are instantly recognizable after just a few notes. Jim Kerr, the longtime frontman of Simple Minds, has one of them.

On July 9, the Scottish singer celebrates his 67th birthday after nearly five decades at the helm of one of rock's most successful bands. Since co-founding Simple Minds in Glasgow in 1977 with guitarist Charlie Burchill, Kerr has helped guide the group from post-punk pioneers into international superstars, selling more than 60 million albums worldwide and scoring a string of classic hits that still fill radio playlists today.

Although American audiences know Simple Minds best for the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit "Don't You (Forget About Me)" from The Breakfast Club, the band's success stretches far beyond that iconic recording. With Kerr's soaring vocals leading the way, Simple Minds also found worldwide success with songs including "Alive and Kicking," "Waterfront," "Promised You a Miracle," "Someone Somewhere in Summertime," "Glittering Prize" and the U.K. No. 1 single "Belfast Child." Along the way, the band earned five U.K. No. 1 albums and became the most commercially successful Scottish band of the 1980s.

Despite that success, Kerr has never believed in standing still. While promoting his 2010 solo album Lostboy! AKA Jim Kerr in an interview with Penny Black Music, he shared a philosophy that has shaped his career for decades.

"Stay still and you calcify," Kerr said. "Calcify and you die."

He explained that the alternative was simple.

"You kind of coast and then think where's the time gone or you go for it, taking the bull by the horns and that's the one that I go for," said the iconic frontman.

That mindset also inspired the solo project itself. Looking back, Kerr said the music reconnected him with the ambitious young songwriter he had once been.

"When I listen to the album it is kind of nostalgic to me," he said. "There was something about the atmosphere and some of the sounds as well which take me back to who I was then, not quite a boy but not a man either."

He added, "I didn't want to start a new band. I like my band… and I didn't want a point blank Jim Kerr solo album either."

That loyalty to Simple Minds remains as strong as ever. Earlier this year, Kerr announced that the band had completed recording its 20th studio album, with a new Australian and New Zealand tour already scheduled for 2027.

"[Writing music is] not something you can schedule into a diary or force into existence between other obligations. But every so often, sitting in that space above the sea, I feel the same quiet pull I did when we were starting out. That sense that something is forming just out of sight, and that my only real job is to stay there long enough, paying attention, until it decides to show itself," wrote Kerr on Facebook. "Almost 50 years later from first learning to write those first songs, Simple Minds are currently putting the finishing touches on our 20th album... Keep the faith!"

Five decades after the band's formation, he and Burchill continue to lead the group they started as teenagers, proving that Kerr has always practiced what he preached. For fans, that's welcome news. One of rock's most distinctive voices isn't just part of music history. He's still writing the next chapter.

It’s hard to believe that the “King of Psychological Thrillers” turns 81 today, but, sure enough, Dean Koontz was born on July 9, 1945!

You may know Koontz under one of his pen names, whether it’s David Axton or even Deanna Dwyer or Leigh Nichols, as he started out early in his career, and every single one of his pen names is included on his website, so you know if you're reading his work or not. Over the years, he stuck to his own name, publishing more than 105 novels in total.

Out of all of them, 14 hardcovers and 16 paperbacks reached the No. 1 spot on The New York Times bestseller list over the years, including Midnight, released in 1981, becoming his first No. 1 release. You’ll know of Cold Fire, Dragon Tears, and Odd Hours among his No. 1 releases, as well.

Koontz didn’t have an easy life growing up, but he maintained the opinion that the abuse he faced at the hands of his father influenced his writing. Over the years, he’s attempted to improve the lives of others, including working for the Appalachian Poverty Program, which was designed to help poor children. However, he would later note that it wasn’t as positive as it sounded, and the funding didn’t reach the intended purpose.

At first, Koontz found joy in writing science fiction, but in the 1970s, he moved into the horror and suspense genres, writing under a mixture of pen names and his own name, with up to eight books a year being published. It wasn’t until the 1980s that he finally had his breakthrough, though, as he published Whispers. 

What many may not realize is that the photos at the back of the earlier novels feature Koontz as a balding man. He went through hair transplant surgery, which was successful and led to the many photos that fans are used to seeing him in today.

The novel Midnight, which would become his first No. 1, involved a black Labrador Retriever called Moose. To help with his research, he became enamoured by the Canine Companions for Independence (CCI), a charitable organization that provides service dogs. He made substantial donations to the charity, and in return, the CCI gifted him Trixie, the Golden Retriever you see in many of the photos in his books. While Trixie passed in 2007, she is believed to be the inspiration for The Darkest Evening of the Year, published in that same year.

Koontz remains one of the most popular authors, with many others turning to his novels for guidance on plot development and characterization in thrillers. His most recent novel, The Friend of the Family,was published in January 2026, bringing a mixture of horror, thriller, and historical fiction.

What Is ‘Little House on the Prairie’ by Laura Ingalls Wilder?

If you've never read Little House on the Prairie, you're missing out. Rachael Welsh, a librarian who goes by @rachaelreads on Instagram, describes the book as "pure Americana."

"It is the story of Laura Ingalls and her family as they traveled to the West. It taught generations about Westward expansion and life as pioneers," she tells Parade.

Little House on the Prairie is the third in a series of nine books that chronicles the Ingalls family between 1871 and the 1880s as they cross the American frontier. The historical fiction series starts in a log cabin in Wisconsin and follows the family as they travel in a covered wagon to build a new life.

Sam Helmick, the President of the American Library Association (ALA), says the books have introduced readers to "stories of family, resilience and everyday life on the American frontier."

Per the book series' description, it was inspired by Ingalls Wilder's childhood and features "detailed portrayals of homesteading, one-room schoolhouses and close-knit pioneer communities."

"The stories explore themes of family resilience, hard work and perseverance as the characters face blizzards, crop failures, and isolation. With its authentic depiction of daily pioneer activities from ice cutting to hay twisting, the series has resonated with generations of readers seeking heartwarming family stories rooted in American history," the description reads.

"It's a touching story about finding home, building trust and discovering that families can be formed in unexpected ways," Helmick tells Parade.

Sarah, Plain and Tall is the first of MacLachlan's five-book series, which follows the fictional Witting family in the late 19th century. Per the book description, the novel is told from the perspective of Anna, whose father put out an advertisement seeking a wife and mother. In the book, Sarah Elisabeth Wheaton answers the ad.

"Before Sarah arrives, Anna and her younger brother Caleb wait and wonder. Will Sarah be nice? Will she sing? Will she stay?" the book description reads.

2. 'Our Only May Amelia' by Jennifer L. Holm

"Imagine living in Washington in 1899. Now imagine you're the only girl in your settlement! Based on the diaries of her great-aunt, Jennifer L. Holm brings us May Amelia, a girl who has grown up with seven brothers and refuses to act like a proper young lady," Welsh explains of the book.

According to its description, May Amelia Jackson has a "love of adventure" and shuns her family's desires for her to act more prim and proper.

"She's sure she could do better if only there were at least one other girl living along the banks of the Nasel River. And now that Mama's going to have a baby, maybe there's hope," the book description reads.

3. 'Hattie Big Sky' by Kirby Larson

Welsh is a fan of this book that follows a fictional 16-year-old girl named Hattie Brooks who has the nickname "Hattie Here-and-There."

"Hattie has spent her life being sent from relative to relative," the librarian says. "She finally grows tired of this life and makes her way to Montana all on her own to live on her late uncle's homestead. She has to work hard but creates a family with her new neighbors and fellow homesteaders."

In her new life, Hattie encounters challenging times but also discovers community.

"Despite daily trials, Hattie continues to work her uncle’s claim until an unforeseen tragedy causes her to search her soul for the real meaning of home," the book description reads.

4. 'One Big Open Sky' by Lesa Cline-Ransome

Welsh says there are several parallels between One Big Open Sky and Little House on the Prairie.

"In 1879 Mississippi, Lettie and her family, much like the Ingalls, are in a covered wagon headed west to Nebraska. This book is narrated by Lettie, her mother Sylvia and Philomena, a teacher who is also traveling with them," the librarian shares.

Lettie, Sylvia and Philomena have been freed from slavery but are "bound by poverty, access to opportunity and patriarchal social structures."

Lettie, who is described as a "young dreamer" in the book description, hopes that her father, Thomas, is right that Nebraska will provide them "an opportunity to claim the independence they’ve strived for over generations on their very own plot of land."

However, Thomas' "desire for control overpowers his common sense" soon enough and the group navigates danger along the way.

5. ‘The Ballad of Lucy Whipple' by Karen Cushman

Welsh has been a fan of Cushman's work since she first read Catherine, Called Birdy as a child, and she enjoys the author's "plucky, young girl narrators."

"In this book, Lucy has been moved from her comfortable home in Massachusetts to California during the Gold Rush, where her mother thinks they will find their fortune, just like Pa Ingalls sought the best for his family by moving them out West," she says.

The book is set in 1849 and follows 12-year-old Lucy as she "helps run a boarding house and looks for comfort in books while trying to find a way to return 'home,'" per the book description.

6. ‘Prairie Lotus' by Linda Sue Park

"Readers who enjoy frontier settings will appreciate this thoughtful historical novel about a Chinese-American girl trying to build a future on the prairie," Helmick says. "Inspired in part by Little House on the Prairie, the novel explores perseverance, belonging and prejudice while expanding whose stories are represented in the American West."

Welsh is also a fan of the book and appreciates that the narrator is half Chinese.

"Hanna and her white father have moved to a town in the Dakota Territory where he is opening a dress goods shop," she tells Parade. "Hanna dreams of being a dressmaker and is excited to pursue an education like her mother dreamed for her, though she has to deal with racism from other townspeople. Like Laura Ingalls, Hanna is a story of perseverance and following your dreams."

7. ‘The Birchbark House' by Louise Erdrich

Both Helmick and Welsh recommend reading this next selection if you're a fan of Little House on the Prairie.

"The Birchbark House follows an Ojibwe family living near Lake Superior during the same era as Laura Ingalls Wilder's stories," Helmick explains. "Erdrich offers young readers a beautifully written Indigenous perspective that enriches our understanding of American history while celebrating family, tradition and community."

Similar to Little House on the Prairie, this book is part of a series. The Birchbark House is the first book in the series, which chronicles 100 years in the life of an Ojibwe family.

"The Birchbark House tells the story of Omakayas and her family, who live on an island in Lake Superior. One day a white settler comes to their lodge, but an invisible force follows with him," Welsh shares.

Meanwhile, the Great Depression has set in, and everything on her family's farm is dying.

"In this uncertain and perilous time, Elsa―like so many of her neighbors―must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family," the book description reads.

If you grew up Catholic, you most likely knew the names of every pope that was around since you could remember; you also probably know the really famous ones who were around before you were born. But when it came to Pope Francis, thanks to his work and how modern and recent his papacy was, he became well-known to most people around the world. As the Vatican’s website reported, he was the 266th pope of the Catholic Church and started his papacy on March 13, 2013; it then ended when he died on April 21, 2025. Due to Pope Francis’ work, reforms and general humility, he left behind a positive legacy. According to Britannica, Pope Francis was born on Dec. 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This made him the first pope from the Western Hemisphere and the first from South America, as well as the first Jesuit pope, which is a religious order of men founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola. They reported that some of his greatest accomplishments included his work addressing the climate crisis, “[championing] environmental stewardship,” bridging the gap between Catholics and non-Catholics and his “historic apologies to survivors of clergy sexual abuse.” He also advocated for the rights of immigrants and other marginalized people, and ultimately believed in a vision of “a poor church for the poor.”

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, wanted to be a chemical technician growing up and worked in food-processing before feeling compelled to join the Church. He entered the Jesuit order as a novice in 1958, was ordained a priest in 1969 and by 1973 he was taking his final vows in the Jesuit order.

After Pope Benedict XVI resigned in 2013, Pope Francis was elected from the conclave of March 2013. Popes have had to choose a papal name for centuries (though not always), and they choose their official papal name based on who or what they want to emulate throughout their papacy. Pope Francis is the first pope to honor Saint Francis of Assisi with his name; St. Francis was known for living his life in service to the poor and is the patron saint of animals, per Britannica.

“Let us not close our hearts, let us not lose confidence, let us never give up.”

This quote appears in The Church of Mercy by Pope Francis, in a section titled “The Christian Message.” This book was published in 2014, a year after he was selected to be pope, and it features collections of his speeches, homilies and papers shared within that first year. It’s the “first Vatican-authorized book detailing his vision for the Catholic Church,” per the book description.

Right before this quote, Pope Francis says that “newness often makes us fearful.” Similar to when, in the Gospel of Luke, two men came up to the women who found Jesus no longer in his tomb, and they were questioning them, asking what was going on. He says that humans are just like how the apostles acted in the Gospel; they wanted assurance and something substantial to hold onto. There’s security in knowing and in familiarity, in things that are set in stone.

Pope Francis then writes that “we are afraid of God’s surprises,” but He “always surprises us.” And we should know that and be prepared for it. “The Lord is like that,” he simply writes. And our quote of the day appears:

Deeper Meaning of Pope Francis’ Quote—‘Never Give Up’

As with many things Pope Francis said throughout his time as pope, you don’t have to be Christian or Catholic to find meaning in this quote. Even though he’s speaking within the context of God and God’s actions, the quote itself holds a lot of good reminders for anyone, even if you don't believe in a higher power. 

If you wanted to look at it within its context in the above book made up of his words, Pope Francis is saying that it’s in our human nature to fear change and new things. Even if you don’t have anxiety or something like OCD, anyone can be weary of surprises and changes. And some people are more averse to shifts than others. 

As he points out, the apostles in the Bible were very much in this group—one of them famously doubted that Jesus had even risen from the dead. And even though it’s natural, it’s silly of us to expect anything other than surprises and wrenches thrown in our plans when it comes to God (or fate, or the universe).

But again, if you’re not religious, it’s still true that people are scared of change and new things. And it’s also true that it’s not realistic to hope for the same ‘ole events to happen in the same way, or to expect people to always do or want the same things. But because humans can be so uncomfortable with newness, it’s easy to close yourself off to fresh, strange and unique experiences, people or information. 

Pope Francis is saying that you shouldn’t close yourself off to new experiences just because you’re scared. Keep your mind and heart open and stay confident in yourself; just because something unknown comes your way doesn’t mean that you need to question yourself, who you are or anything else. 

And lastly, he shares to never give up. In the face of frightening situations, it can be easy to second-guess or doubt yourself and quit. But he states that surprises and unexpected things are going to happen; it’s inevitable. So trust in yourself and persevere.

The FDA has expanded a cheese recall connected to an ongoing listeria outbreak investigation involving requeson, a soft cheese similar to ricotta. The investigation has been linked to 12 illnesses, 10 hospitalizations and one death.

Which Cheeses Are Recalled And Where Were They Sold?

The latest recall involves products from La Ceiba Foods Latin Market Inc., which recalled certain Requeson Salvadoreno and Requeson Mexicano products due to possible listeria monocytogenes contamination.

The recalled cheeses were sold under the La Colonia and Selectos Latinos brands and were distributed to supermarkets, retail stores and restaurants in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

The recalled products include:

All affected La Ceiba products have an expiration date of July 10, 2026.

The recall is connected to a larger recall by Clover Hill Dairy, LLC. Clover Hill Dairy, based in Mechanicsville, Maryland, expanded its recall to include all cheese products manufactured at its facility after products tested positive for the outbreak strain of listeria monocytogenes.

Some recalled products may not be sold under the Clover Hill Dairy name. Products may have been relabeled under other brands, including:

• Kesso
• Quesos La Ricura
• Izalco
• De Mi Pueblo
• Rio Lindo

Clover Hill Dairy products were sold through the company’s retail market, at farmers markets and through third-party distributors in Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Virginia and Washington, D.C. Officials say products may have reached additional states.

What Shoppers Should Do If They Bought Recalled Cheese

Consumers should not eat, sell or serve any recalled cheese products. The FDA recommends returning recalled items to the place of purchase or disposing of them.

Symptoms of a listeria infection can include fever, muscle aches, nausea, tiredness, vomiting and diarrhea. More serious infections may cause headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance or convulsions.

The FDA's investigation is ongoing. So before you dig into that cheese in the fridge, it's worth taking a quick look to make sure it's not part of the recall.

Led Zeppelin is best known for its legendary hard-rock anthems, but one of the band's most enduring songs came from a place of profound loss.

The band's beloved 1979 ballad "All My Love" was born out of unimaginable tragedy, written after the death of lead singer Robert Plant's 5-year-old son, Karac.

Karac, the rocker's second child with former wife Maureen Wilson, died of a stomach infection in 1977 while Plant was on tour in the U.S. with Led Zeppelin. Two years later, Plant wrote the song "All My Love" with the help of bandmate Paul Jones, and it was included on the band's 1979 album, In Through the Out Door.

The deeply personal track has remained a fan favorite for decades, and it's also widely considered to be one of most heartbreaking songs the band ever released. "All My Love" has even been ranked as the "Saddest Song Ever" by Ultimate Classic Rock.

"It was just paying tribute to the joy he gave us as a family, and in a crazy way, occasionally still does," Plant, 77, said in 2024 interview with Dan Rather while talking about the song, which is one of two songs believed to have been inspired by Karac's death, along with "I Believe," off Plant’s 1993 solo album, Fate of Nations.

"Every now and again he turns up in songs for no other reason than I miss him a lot," Plant said during the same interview in 2024, where he also described Karac as a "little nature boy" and "mountain man."

After Karac's death, Plant admitted to having doubts about his future in Led Zeppelin, but it was bandmate John Bonham who ultimately convinced him to stay.

"I’d spent so much time trying to be a decent dad, but at the same time I was really attracted to what I was doing in Zeppelin. So when [Karac] bowed out, I just thought: ... ‘Would it have been any different if I was there?'" Plant previously told ClassicRockmagazine.
