If there’s one thing I’ve learned after years of cruising, it’s that getting older doesn’t mean slowing down. In fact, for many of us, it’s quite the opposite.

By the time we reach our 60s and 70s, we’ve figured out what we like, what we’re willing to splurge on, and what we’re no longer willing to put up with when we travel. We want experiences that are worth our time and money. We want to see places we’ve dreamed about, enjoy exceptional food, discover new cultures, and perhaps indulge in a little luxury along the way. And sometimes, we might even want to bring the grandchildren along for the ride.

With 2027 cruise itineraries already being booked and attracting attention, I reached out to some of my favorite travel advisors and industry insiders to find out which sailings they’re most excited about for travelers over the age of 60. While I expected each to have their own opinions, the responses that I got were even wider than I had imagined. Their recommendations ranged from small-ship luxury and active European adventures to Antarctica, Japan, and even a rare total solar eclipse cruise that sounds like a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

What surprised me wasn’t the variety of cruises they recommended. It was how enthusiastically they rejected the idea that older travelers are looking for something predictable, and as a 72-year-old who loves to cruise, I couldn’t agree more. As Lucia Ruggieri, travel advisor and founder of Wander With Lucia, explains, one of the biggest misconceptions about mature travelers is that they’re necessarily looking to slow down. “In my experience, many want exactly the opposite!” she says.

And judging by these recommendations, 2027 could be an exceptional year to get out there and see the world.

1. Best for Luxury Yacht Cruising: The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection received something of a double endorsement from the experts I consulted, and for good reason. Both Frank King, a professional comedian who spent years entertaining cruise passengers, and Amina Dearmon, founder of Perspectives Travel and an affiliate of SmartFlyer, named the luxury yacht line their top recommendation for 2027.

King, who has spent 41 years performing professionally, including aboard cruise ships, has seen firsthand what separates an ordinary vacation from an extraordinary one. “My pick for the best luxury cruise in 2027? The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection. Hands down,” he says.

His reasoning starts with the accommodations. There are no inside cabins. Every accommodation is a suite with an ocean view and private terrace. “You’re spending thousands of dollars to vacation on the ocean. Shouldn’t you actually be able to see it from your room?” he asks.

He also appreciates the included premium beverages, Wi-Fi, gratuities, 24-hour in-suite dining, and personalized attention from a Suite Ambassador. But his favorite example of luxury is surprisingly simple. “You want a cappuccino? You order a cappuccino. You don’t have to pull out your cruise card every time you want a cup of coffee.”

King acknowledges that certain specialty dining experiences and premium extras cost more, but he believes the everyday experience feels remarkably seamless. Dearmon agrees, adding that the collection has another advantage: familiarity. With luxury hotel brands increasingly entering the cruise industry, she believes Ritz-Carlton’s established reputation helps make yacht cruising appealing even to people who have never considered taking a cruise.

She also points to the extensive destination choices, included food and beverages, and the opportunity for eligible Marriott Bonvoy members to earn points. For travelers who aren’t quite sure whether cruising is for them, Dearmon suggests a shorter yacht itinerary paired with a land vacation.

2. Best for a Rare Bucket-List Experience: Azamara’s 2027 Solar Eclipse Cruise

If there’s one cruise that deserves a prominent place on your 2027 wish list, this might be it.

Tamara Lidbom, owner of Anytime Travel Agency in Phoenix, Arizona, has more than 20 years of experience planning international travel, family vacations, and cruises. She says luxury and expedition cruising have been growing among her clients, with 2027 shaping up to be particularly strong.

Her top recommendation is a Mediterranean sailing timed around the total solar eclipse on August 2, 2027. Specifically, she’s watching Azamara Onward’s Southern Mediterranean voyage departing Barcelona on July 27, 2027.

The ship carries fewer than 700 guests and, according to Lidbom, the sailing will feature astronomers from Lowell Observatory. The itinerary includes extended port visits in Spain, Italy, Tunisia, and Malta, providing opportunities to explore historic cities and Mediterranean cultures.

Lidbom cited fares around $4,500 per person when making her recommendation, although prices and availability can change. She also notes that some competing eclipse-themed departures from lines including Viking, Holland America, and Seabourn have already been selling out or developing waitlists.

A total solar eclipse is an extraordinary sight, and the opportunity to experience one while traveling through the Mediterranean makes this a particularly intriguing choice.

One important detail: the August 2 eclipse is the following year, so travelers should confirm the exact sailing dates, viewing location, and eclipse experience before booking.

These experiences combine river cruising with guided outdoor adventures, giving travelers the opportunity to explore destinations in a more active and personal way. Instead of simply watching the European countryside from a bus, you might spend the day cycling past vineyards, walking through historic villages, or exploring scenic trails. Then, at the end of the day, you return to the comfort of your river ship.

I particularly like the idea of combining adventure with a comfortable place to relax afterward. It’s also a wonderful way for experienced travelers to revisit familiar destinations and discover an entirely different side of them.

Oceania has built its reputation around destination-focused cruising and sophisticated culinary experiences, making it especially attractive to travelers who appreciate excellent dining. For 2027, she suggests looking at Mediterranean itineraries and culinary-themed voyages.

Picture yourself exploring a local market in Italy, tasting regional specialties, learning about local ingredients, and returning to a ship where the culinary experience continues. Depending on the ship and itinerary, Oceania offers specialty restaurants, cooking classes, and food-focused shore excursions.

It’s a particularly appealing option for couples who enjoy smaller ships and prefer cultural experiences over waterslides and high-energy attractions. As Ruggieri points out, some of the most memorable travel experiences happen around a table.

Imagine waking up to towering glaciers, watching penguins move across the ice, and spotting whales breaching in the surrounding waters. And, depending on the conditions, guests can even explore the area by Zodiac with experienced expedition guides before returning to the ship for exceptional dining and luxurious accommodations.

It’s the sort of experience that challenges the thought that luxury travel has to be about relaxation. Sometimes luxury is having the opportunity to do extraordinary things that we wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to experience.

Of course, Antarctica isn’t for everyone (it’s not for those looking for warm beaches and sitting back and relaxing), and those expedition landings may involve stepping into and out of Zodiacs, navigating uneven or slippery terrain, and coping with unpredictable weather. So, this is geared to the more fit mature traveler who loves things like hiking, skiing, and outdoor exploration. So for travelers who are physically comfortable with those requirements, it’s an extraordinary possibility.

Now, here’s a category that’s especially close to my heart. As a grandmother of a 3-year-old I know there’s something wonderful about seeing a destination through a child’s eyes. And if you’re planning a multigenerational family vacation in 2027, Ruggieri recommends Disney Cruise Line.

Disney has built its cruise experience around making vacations enjoyable for children, parents, and grandparents alike. Children can enjoy character encounters, themed entertainment, imaginative dining experiences, and age-appropriate activities.

Meanwhile, adults can retreat to adult-exclusive spaces, enjoy a leisurely dinner, or simply relax while younger family members participate in supervised programming. That balance can be particularly valuable on a multigenerational vacation.

After all, traveling with the grandchildren is wonderful, but sometimes Nana and Grandpa deserve a little vacation time of their own.

Ruggieri also highlighted the proposed Disney Believe and its anticipated late-2027 debut. But keep in mind that those ship-specific launch details and entertainment offerings should be independently confirmed before making plans. Fortunately, Disney has plenty of other ships and itineraries that will be just as much fun for the grandkids to consider.

With so many options, the best cruise isn’t necessarily the most expensive, the longest, or the one sailing to the most exotic destination. It’s the one that matches the way you actually enjoy traveling.

One point on which these experts agree is that travelers shouldn’t wait too long to begin planning, particularly if they’re interested in specialty sailings, smaller luxury ships, or unusual itineraries.

Lidbom has already noticed significant demand for 2027 eclipse cruises, with certain sailings already sold out or waitlisted. And with smaller ships carrying far fewer guests than megaships, popular accommodations and itineraries can disappear quickly.

Ruggieri also recommends booking early to secure your favorite staterooms and suites, departure dates, and opportunities for special experiences that may be happening.

But booking early doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do your homework first. Before putting down a deposit, travelers should pay particular attention to cancellation policies, refundable versus nonrefundable fares, deposit deadlines, and exactly what’s included in the advertised price. This is especially important when considering some of the more expensive expedition cruises or longer international itineraries.

It’s also worth looking at travel insurance, particularly coverage for medical emergencies and evacuation, and reviewing the physical requirements of shore excursions.

For travelers who need accessible accommodations or mobility assistance, it’s important to investigate the ship, tender arrangements, and individual ports rather than assuming a smaller ship will automatically be easier to navigate.

And don’t forget to consider adding a few days before or after your cruise. Flights can be delayed, boarding times can be early, and you may just want to relax a bit before or after your cruise before returning home.

My Take: The Best Cruise After 60 Is the One That Excites You

I’ve sailed on everything from enormous ocean liners to smaller ships, and I’ve learned that there isn’t one perfect cruise for everyone. Some days I want a beautiful balcony, a great meal, and absolutely nothing on my schedule.

Other days I want to step off the ship and discover a destination I’ve never visited, wander through a local market, meet the people who live there, and experience something completely new.

And sometimes I want to share those experiences with the people I love most. That’s what I appreciate about these recommendations. They don’t treat travelers over 60 as though we all have the same interests, abilities, budgets, or expectations. Instead, they recognize that we’re individuals who happen to have a few more years of experience under our belts.

Some of us are adventurous. Some of us appreciate luxury. Some of us want to travel with our grandchildren, while others would prefer an adults-only atmosphere and a perfectly prepared cappuccino.

And plenty of us want a little bit of everything.

So, whether 2027 finds you sailing through Europe, watching a solar eclipse from the Mediterranean, or heading to Antarctica, my advice is simple. Don’t choose a cruise because someone says it’s appropriate for your age. Choose it because it makes you excited to pack your bags. After all, the best part of traveling after 60 isn’t slowing down. It’s finally having the freedom to decide exactly where you want to go next.

Will There Be a Season 5 of 'The Diplomat'? Here's What We Know

Netflix’s The Diplomat is back with Season 4, and the question is now: will it be back again for Season 5? As the show continues to explore the fraught relationship between the White House and diplomacy, the question of whether Ambassador Kate Wyler’s (played by Keri Russell) story will continue is a very real one for the audience.

As of writing this piece, Netflix has not officially renewed The Diplomat for Season 5. So we’ll have to wait for an official announcement before we can say for sure. There is, however, reason to keep an eye on the show’s future, as the creative team has continued to find fresh complications for their central characters, and the latest season sees some of the show’s biggest political and personal issues brought to the fore.

Will ‘The Diplomat’ be returning for Season 5?

Season 5 is still unconfirmed. Netflix hasn’t announced a renewal or a cancellation, so it would be foolish to suggest that Season 4 will be the end of the series.

The timing of any announcement is also very much in doubt. Netflix renewed The Diplomat for Season 4 in May 2025, well in advance of Season 3, which launched that October. The show’s performance post-release will no doubt be a factor in Netflix’s decision, though the company has not stated any specific criteria for renewal.

However, whatever happened in the finale of Season 4, the Netflix show likely will return for another season.

What could happen after Season 4?

Well, that’s a bit of a can of worms, really. The obvious thing to do would be to go into a new season of the show with a new story and a new cast of characters. That’s what we did with the first season. The second season was a continuation of that story with a new set of characters. So the same could be done with a Season 4. You could have a new story and a new cast of characters.

Created by Debora Cahn, The Diplomat is the story of Kate Wyler, a highly experienced American diplomat, whose appointment as Ambassador to the UK puts both her professional capabilities and her marriage under serious strain.

Season 4 picks up from that fallout that took place at the end of Season 3. In the Season 4 finale of The Diplomat, Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) resigns after President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) increasingly prioritizes loyalty over accountability. Kate initially helps contain the fallout from Grace and Hal Wyler’s (Rufus Sewell) involvement in stealing the Russian weapon Poseidon, but growing tensions with Britain and the president’s treatment of dissenting officials push her to take a stand.

At the G7 summit, Grace admits the U.S. took Poseidon and sent warships toward Britain, defending both actions as necessary for security. Kate’s resignation sparks a broader walkout involving Hal, Billie Appiah, and Secretary of State Miguel Ganon. Hal’s final conversation with reporters remains unresolved, leaving Grace’s political future uncertain.

If it goes any further than Season 4, then the fallout from all these political decisions could easily be the basis of a whole new series. Netflix has said nothing at all about Season 5 at this stage, and we don’t know how the events of this season will impact a potential continuation.

When can you watch ‘The Diplomat’ Season 4?

While a fifth season is still very much in doubt, the fourth season of The Diplomat is available to watch on Netflix. The new episodes see Kate attempting to deal with the aftermath of the White House conspiracy as well as the personal ramifications of Hal’s actions. The season also sees Grace and Todd’s marriage become a more integral part of the story, adding another dimension to the series’ exploration of power, loyalty, and relationships.

Until the streamer confirms their plans, we’d all be best off treating Season 5 as a possibility rather than a certainty.

‘Incredible Hulk’ Star Says Driver Crashed Into Bus After Spotting Him in Full Green Makeup

In 1978, Lou Ferrigno found TV fame as a star on The Incredible Hulk. The bodybuilder turned actor was just 26 years old when he landed the role as the green-skinned alter ego of David Banner (Bill Bixby), a scientist who routinely transformed into the giant humanoid when under stress. The sci-fi drama series aired for five seasons on CBS, which meant Ferrigno spent a lot of time in the makeup chair.

During an October 2026 appearance on The Scott Baio Podcast, Ferrigno, 74, recalled working on the CBS series, revealing that it became a “training platform” for him as an actor. “It’s amazing because that’s how I learned the craft of acting,” Ferrigno told host Scott Baio.

The Incredible Hulk actor also recalled the grueling, more than three-hour process to turn his skin green for each episode.

“They rubbed it in the old-fashioned way because we had the forehead, the nose piece. It was tough. I was the first one on the set and the last one to leave,” Ferrigno revealed. “I was locked up in the motor home. I couldn’t socialize on the set because of all the makeup. I had to be in front of the air conditioner to keep the temperature down. It was very uncomfortable.”

Ferrigno shared that the makeup took more than an hour and a half to remove with the help of two assistants. “I had had a big shower in the motor home,” he said. “I had to scrub the makeup off. It took like an hour, an hour and a half. It wasn’t fun. …Sometimes I have to take the makeup off, like 3 in the morning, 4 in the morning.“

The actor revealed that there was one time that he drove home without removing the makeup because he was so tired.

“Once,“ Ferrigno said. “And I was driving, I’ll never forget, I said to the makeup person, I says, listen, at 2 in the morning, I said, ‘Screw it. I’ll take the makeup off. I’ll find a way to take it off. I’m going to go home.’ So, I’m driving on the freeway and there’s an SUV on the right side. And the guy turned around, looked at me, and said, ‘Holy s—.’ He goes, ‘It’s the Incredible Hulk.’ And his SUV hit a bus.”

Ferrigno joked that if the guy died, he didn’t know about it, adding that at the time, he just didn’t want to get pulled over and questioned.

He also revealed that even when he removed the makeup, the green would come through his pores and people would ask him if he was okay.

Ferrigno once credited his Incredible Hulk co-star for being one of his biggest Hollywood mentors.

“Working with Bill Bixby was wonderful because he was like my mentor,” he said at an MGM London panel in 2017, per Big Comic Page. “I was a big fan of his work before I did the series. Meghan Markle, 45, Stuns in Wine-Red for First Official U.K. Outing With Harry Since Move

She wore the same label, too.

The Duchess of Sussex, 45, joined Prince Harry, 42, in Nottingham, England, on Thursday, Oct. 15, for the first of three charity visits in the city. It’s their first official joint outing since the family moved back from California in August.

“Oh, it’s great to be back,” she told one woman in the crowd.

She Wore Joseph in Nottingham in 2017, Too

Meghan stepped out in a wine-red coat with a matching turtleneck and earrings, all from the British label Joseph. She added a skirt by The Fold London and heels by Jennifer Chamandi, and pulled her hair back into a sleek ponytail.

The label has history here. On Dec. 1, 2017, four days after their engagement was announced, Meghan made her first official outing with Harry in Nottingham. She wore a beige Joseph skirt that day with a black Wolford turtleneck bodysuit and a navy Mackage coat.

A spokesperson for the couple said the city is “a special place” for them both for that exact reason.

Hugs, Selfies, and a Little Lilibet News

The couple went straight to the crowd outside the Community Recording Studio, hugging fans and posing for selfies. Meghan was handed flowers and friendship bracelets, and she brought up the weather with one fan. “We’ve got lovely weather today. We got lucky,” she said.

Harry put a hand on Meghan’s back as they greeted people, and he stopped to tell one woman he liked her bright pink jacket.

Emily Davis, 21, gave Meghan yellow flowers and a card. “She looks amazing up close. She was dressed amazingly,” Davis said. “I gave her a card, and she folded up and put it in her pocket so she can read it later.”

Inside, Meghan joined a bracelet-making workshop, and that’s where she shared some family news. When one girl told her she liked gymnastics, Meghan said, “Oh yeah. Our daughter is doing that too right now. She loves it.”

Princess Lilibet is 5.

Meghan also gave the girls some advice on confidence. “We have to remember to talk to ourselves like we talk to our best friends,” she said. “It’s really important to be just as kind to yourself.”

Harry Has Backed the First Stop Since 2013

The Community Recording Studio, in Nottingham’s St Ann’s neighborhood, is a charity Harry has supported since 2013. It’s a small operation. Its Charity Commission listing describes a free drop-in space where young people, mostly 13 to 25, work on music, dance, music technology, performance and design. It brought in about £97,000 in 2025 and runs with four trustees and seven volunteers.

Its CEO, Trevor Rose, said they found out about the visit only a few weeks ago. “I thought it was going to be something in the future, next thing I know it’s two weeks later and we are here, so yeah it’s a complete shock,” he said.

In September 2025, during a visit to Nottingham, Harry announced a personal £1.1 million donation to BBC Children in Need.

The Second Stop Once Kept Meghan’s Donation a Secret

Next up is Himmah Hub, a food poverty charity, where the couple is expected to watch cooking classes and help pack food parcels.

Meghan gave Himmah £10,000 in August 2020, with funds from The Royal Foundation. The charity kept it a secret. Its director later explained that the trustees thought she was “like Marmite,” the British way of saying people either love her or hate her, and worried the gift could hurt the charity’s reputation.

That changed in March 2021, after her Oprah Winfrey interview. “After the interview we realised we’re a poverty and race organisation [and] that we needed to show solidarity,” he said.

The last stop is Epic Partners, which supports young people through youth work, sport and mentoring.

It Looked Royal, but It Isn’t

The day had all the trappings of a royal engagement, but the Sussexes aren’t working royals. A letter authorized by King Charles last month called them “private citizens,” and their own private security team traveled with them. They’re still waiting to hear whether they’ll get taxpayer-funded police protection now that they live in the U.K. full time.

Since the move, they’ve been spotted on a pub date in the Cotswolds, and they’re reportedly planning to spend Christmas with Meghan’s mom, Doria Ragland, instead of with the royal family at Sandringham.

Thursday’s visit is Meghan’s first public event in the U.K. in four years. The last one was Queen Elizabeth’s funeral in 2022.

You might feel your heart rate spike, your muscles tense and a sudden surge of defensiveness rise to the surface. In those emotionally charged moments, the words we choose carry immense weight—and very often, a single word can act as a spark in a powder keg, turning a simple misunderstanding into a deeply painful fight.

Conflict is a natural part of human relationships, whether with a partner, a family member, a friend or a colleague. However, many people find themselves stuck in repetitive, exhausting argument loops without realizing that their vocabulary is actively fueling the fire. Psychologists emphasize that when we are emotionally triggered, our brain’s fight-or-flight response takes over, reducing our ability to remain calm and empathetic. In these critical moments, using absolute language can destroy any chance of constructive communication. And ultimately, eliminating two words from an argument can stop it from escalating.

By understanding how specific absolute words hijack conversations and by committing to removing them from your vocabulary during conflicts, you can instantly break the cycle of escalation, protect your emotional well-being and foster deeper connection and trust with the people you love.

The 2 Absolute Words That Instantly Escalate Conflicts

When arguments spiral out of control, absolute terms like “always” or “never” are almost always (sorry) at the center of the storm. According to licensed psychologists, incorporating these sweeping generalizations into a disagreement immediately shifts the focus away from resolving the issue at hand and forces the listener into a defensive corner.

When you tell someone, “You never listen to me” or “You always forget to help,” you are no longer addressing a specific behavior or event. Instead, you are placing a permanent, negative label on their character and history. In a previous Parade article on a phrase that escalates every argument, licensed psychologist Dr. Brandy Smith, PhD, emphasized the danger of emotional escalation during disagreements.

“When we are emotionally poked or escalated, we are not able to be as thoughtful or to process as groundedly as we do when we are emotionally regulated and in a calm, considerate space,” she shared.

Using absolute language immediately triggers a reaction because it feels unfair and inaccurate to the listener. Rather than hearing your pain or perspective, their brain instantly begins searching for counterexamples to prove you wrong—recalling the one time three months ago when they did help or listen. Consequently, the conversation strays completely away from problem-solving and degenerates into a battle over facts, accuracy and defense.

Additionally, as stated in the same past article, word choice ultimately determines the direction of a conflict. Dr. Michele Goldman, PhD, a psychologist and Hope for Depression Research Foundation media advisor, explained that word choice is “the distinction between whether an argument escalates into a fight or de-escalates into a conversation.” Removing absolute words takes away the inflammatory spark that transforms a simple grievance into an explosive battle.

How To De-Escalate Arguments and Communicate Effectively

Stopping an argument before it escalates requires intentionality, self-awareness and a willingness to trade absolute statements for grounded, specific observations. To foster healthier resolution during high-stress moments, consider these expert-backed strategies:

Focus on specific instances: Instead of making broad statements like “You never clean up,” isolate the current situation: “I felt overwhelmed when I saw the dishes in the sink tonight.”
Use “I” statements: Express your personal emotional reality rather than accusing the other person. Saying “I feel unheard right now” creates space for connection, whereas “You always ignore me” breeds defensiveness.
Acknowledge and validate emotions: Validate the other person’s experience without dismissing your own. Recognizing that both parties are emotional helps lower the collective room temperature.
Pause to regulate: If you notice your temper rising or feel tempted to throw out absolutes, take a timed break. Stepping away for 10 to 15 minutes allows your nervous system to return to a calm, rational state.

By consciously removing words like “always” and “never” from your conflict resolution toolkit, you make room for genuine understanding, emotional safety and lasting solutions.

Mildew in Your Washing Machine? A Cleaning Expert Explains What to Do Before Your Next Load

Anyone who’s ever visited my tiny apartment knows that my in-unit washer-dryer is the dramatic climax of my house tour. It may sound corny, but after having to schlep my laundry down four flights of stairs and to a laundromat four blocks and an avenue away for years, having a washing machine and dryer right in my kitchen makes my life so much easier, and I’m incredibly grateful for it.

Naturally, my gratitude inspires me to always keep my machines as clean as possible. So earlier this year, when I noticed brown-black mildew building up in the rubber gasket at the front of my machine, I was alarmed. Not only that, but I also noticed a few small brown flecks of soap scum on some of my clothes and linens right after taking them out of the wash. Ewww.

Obviously, this is kind of gross—but is it actually something to worry about? And is there a way to easily clean the mildew out of a rubber gasket? And a way to prevent it from growing back? To find out, I turned to professional cleaner Kris Ott, Owner of The Bright Side, a cleaning company based in Spokane.

Before getting into how to prevent and clean this buildup, Ott clarifies the difference between mildew and black mold.

“There is a difference between mildew and black mold that should be talked about first,” Ott tells Parade. “Black mold is an extremely serious issue that can cause severe respiratory issues in people. Mildew is its nicer cousin that often gets the bad rap of being called black mold. In the case of the washing machine, it could have both things growing. But more than likely it is going to be mildew and can safely be removed by your average homeowner.”

What Causes Mildew to Build Up in a Washing Machine?

“This mildew is caused primarily by the design of the washer,” Ott says, pointing to front-load washers as more susceptible to mildew buildup, specifically in the rubber gasket surrounding the opening.

“Front-loaders make life easier by being able to toss your clothes just a few inches from the laundry basket into the drum,” he notes. “You also get to see your clothes getting washed, a big hit with kids and cats!”

However, that convenient and entertaining design can encourage mildew—especially if you close the machine’s door between loads.

“When the washer door is closed and begins to fill up the drum, there would be a big problem if that water escaped anywhere,” Ott explains. “The gasket and seal inside the door are designed for a perfect fit to make sure that doesn’t happen. Most people after doing laundry shut the door which causes all that moisture to get trapped inside. With nowhere to vent, it becomes the perfect environment for mildew to grow. Add in organic materials like soil, dirt and whatever else is getting washed off your clothes and it becomes clear why this happens.”

In general, Ott notes that “mildew and mold like wet, warm, shaded areas to grow.”

Is Mildew in a Washing Machine Something to Worry About?

“There really isn’t a need to worry unless you can visually see mold and mildew coating the inside of the drum,” per Ott. If that is the case, he recommends having a professional deep clean your machine.

But as long as the mildew is mostly just building up in the gasket, you likely don’t need to worry too much—but you’re going to want to remedy the situation.

“The odor is going to be the most unpleasant part,” says Ott. “Between a good detergent, hot water and a warm dry cycle your clothes do come out ‘clean.'” It’s an imperfect practice at best, but continues to work, and beats buying new clothes weekly.”

A Professional Cleaner Shares His No. 1 Tip for Cleaning Mildew From a Washing Machine

When your washing machine’s rubber gasket is accumulating mildew, “the best thing to do is to run a cleaning cycle on the washer when it’s empty,” according to Ott. If your machine doesn’t have a cleaning cycle, you can just run it on the hottest water setting.

While you run the cleaning cycle, you can add a washing machine cleaning product to the drum. I use the Seventh Generation Washing Machine Cleaner tablets, which the company recommends using once a month. “The hot water and store bought cleaning solution will handle all the areas you can’t get to,” Ott explains.

However, if any mildew remains after running the cleaning cycle, Ott recommends wiping down the gasket with a homemade cleaning solution.

You can either mix together white vinegar, dish soap and water; or, mix together equal parts of water and bleach, he says. Then, pull back the gasket, and “wipe down the area that has mildew growth [using] a paper towel or rag that you can toss afterwards.” After this, Ott says “you should see instant results.”

From there, if any mildew remains, you may want to run one more cleaning cycle before using the machine to wash clothes again.

How to Prevent Mildew From Growing in Your Washing Machine

When it comes to preventing mildew from returning, Ott says, “the best solution is the easiest: just leave the door cracked after each cycle and let the washer air out.”

My washing machine is in my teeny-tiny kitchen, so keeping the door open on its own when I’m cooking or washing dishes isn’t realistic for me. So, to help keep the machine ajar all the time, I drape a dish towel over the hinge. The towel prevents the door from ever closing all the way—plus, it means I have a towel handy to wipe moisture from my rubber gasket after I do a load!

Dolly Parton's Trust Files for 'Dolly's' Pet Food 7 Weeks After She Died at 80

Dolly Parton’s name is on a theme park, a hotel and a coffee brand.

Her trust wants it on pet food next.

On Wednesday, Oct. 14, the Dolly Parton Professional Property Trust filed a new trademark application for “Dolly’s.” It covers three things: pet food, edible pet treats and “foodstuffs and beverages for animals.”

The trust filed it as an intent-to-use application, which means there’s no product on shelves yet. As of Thursday, it was still waiting to be assigned to an examining attorney.

Parton died at 80 after what her reps called a “brief battle with cancer,” and her nephew, Bryan Seaver, announced her death on Aug. 25. The filing landed seven weeks later.

She Filed for Pet Food Herself in April

This is the third pet food trademark with her name on it this year.

On April 3, Parton applied in her own name for “Dolly Parton” and “Dolly” for the same pet food, treats and animal foodstuffs. The examiner described the “Dolly” mark as her name in a stylized signature with a butterfly to its right. All three applications list the same attorney, Willmore F. Holbrow III.

Neither April application has cleared, and a rival brand isn’t the reason. The trademark office’s examining attorneys searched its database and found no conflicting marks for either one. What they asked for was consent.

When a trademark names a living person, that person has to agree to it in writing. The July 17 letter on “Dolly” said the consent “must be personally signed by the individual” named in the mark, and the Aug. 20 letter on “Dolly Parton” flagged the same thing.

That second letter went out five days before her death was announced.

Each letter gave three months to respond, with one paid extension allowed. As of Thursday, the records showed no response to either one.

The October filing is the only application on file under the trust’s name.

‘Dolly’s Dog Treats’ Were Already on the Calendar

Pets weren’t new territory for her. She launched a pet clothing line, Doggy Parton, in 2022, hosted a TV special called Dolly Parton’s Pet Gala in 2024, and in August said she was developing a line of dog treats with Purina.

The day after her death, her team listed the projects she’d left in the works, and “Dolly’s Dog Treats,” set for early 2027, was on it. The new application doesn’t mention Purina or a launch date.

Her longtime manager, Danny Nozell, also gave fans a way to judge whatever shows up next. “If you see unreleased music, products, books, experiences, and campaigns launched through official Dolly Parton channels, you can have confidence in knowing that she placed her personal stamp on it,” he said in an Aug. 26 statement.

What Else Her Team Has Planned

The September calendar alone had a hotel, a museum, a doll line and a coffee brand on it. A Kendra Scott collection follows in January. DOLLY: A True Original Musical opens on Broadway Jan. 19, 2027, which would’ve been her 81st birthday, and a bedding and home decor line is planned for the third quarter of 2027.

For now, “Dolly’s” pet food is a name on a form.

Fight Club blends dark humor and gruesome violence with a thought-provoking tale about consumerism and toxic masculinity, making it a timeless classic.

Directed by David Fincher, the movie stars Pitt as Tyler Durden, a soap salesman who befriends Norton’s insomniac Narrator. The duo forms an underground fight club for other frustrated men, but their violent therapy group soon grows into something far more destructive.

Fight Club isn’t your typical thriller, as it takes audiences in so many unexpected directions. The story starts off with group therapy sessions and a complicated romance with Helena Bonham Carter’s chain-smoking Marla. While many consider it a classic today, Fight Club wasn’t so well received upon release. Edward Norton even recalled audiences booing at the film’s Venice Film Festival premiere. The movie also bombed in cinemas, grossing roughly $100 million on a $63 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo.

The fact that it is very well made and has a great first act certainly clouds the issue.”

'Welcome to Plathville' Star Mourns Heartbreaking Family Loss

A Welcome to Plathville star is speaking out about a heavy personal loss.

Known for sharing the highs and lows of her life on screen, Lydia Plath Wyse offered a rare, vulnerable glimpse into her current grief. She is focused on finding strength and solace amid heartbreak.

On October 14, Lydia posted an Instagram update that revealed she had miscarried her first child with her husband, Zac Wyse. The couple married in February 2025.

The TLC star shared a photograph of a bouquet of fresh flowers, a pair of tiny baby booties, and a black-and-white sonogram image. A handwritten note addressed simply to “Baby Bean” sat nearby, underscoring the tribute’s quiet heartbreak.

Plath Wyse wrote, “There’s no words for the pain as we grieve the loss of our little angel. Our first child, our greatest love, and a true miracle.”

She continued, “We’re so grateful for the short time we had with our baby bean. You were so loved and celebrated every day we had with you!”

“You were the talk and the joy of our lives with family, honorary aunts and uncles, and friends. All so excited to love you and meet you but now you’re gone too soon,” the reality star added.

Her statement concluded, “Give my brother a hug for me. Can’t wait to meet you in heaven. Love, mom and dad.”

Fans and friends shared their condolences in the post’s comments section. Two familiar faces who shared their thoughts were former 19 Kids and Counting stars, Jinger and Jeremy Vuolo.

Jeremy wrote, “Lydia & Zac, we are so saddened to hear this. We’re praying that the Lord would comfort you in this time.” Jinger added, “I’m so so sorry, guys. Praying for you all!”

“I’m so sorry for your loss. No matter how small, or how far along, that little bean is your child, and you have lost him/her,” wrote one follower.

A second fan noted, “We will pray for you to have a safe recovery and continue to grow your family. Thinking of you, hubby and your family. Thinking of you.”

Lydia Plath Wyse has starred alongside Plath family members Kim, Barry, Ethan, Isaac, Micah, and Moriah on the TLC reality series Welcome to Plathville for seven seasons since the series premiered in November 2019. '60s Music Legend, 87, Announces Retirement 65 Years After Debut Album: 'The Work Never Ends'

After more than six decades on the road, Judy Collins is preparing to say goodbye to life as a full-time touring musician.

The 87-year-old folk legend is currently on her Sweet Judy Blue Eyes: The Farewell Tour, which will stretch into 2027 and mark the end of Collins’ years as a full-time road musician.

But don’t call it a retirement from music.

Collins, who is still performing roughly 120 shows a year, plans to continue recording, writing and performing even after her farewell tour comes to an end. She’s also working on music for a Broadway show and writing a new book titled “Singing Through the Storm.”

“Touring has been the great thread of my life,” Collins told the San Francisco Chronicle. “City to city, song to song, face to face.”

“The audiences have carried me for decades, and I’ve never stopped being moved by what can happen in a room when we truly listen to one another,” she continued.

Collins will bring her farewell tour to Zellerbach Hall in Berkeley, Calif., on Oct. 18, returning to a venue where she performed earlier this year.

It’s another stop in a career that stretches back more than 60 years.

Collins released her debut album A Maid of Constant Sorrow in 1961 and became one of the defining voices of the 1960s folk revival. She became particularly renowned for her interpretations of other songwriters’ work, including Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides, Now,” Leonard Cohen’s “Suzanne” and Stephen Sondheim’s “Send in the Clowns.”

Her recording of “Both Sides, Now” became one of her signature songs and earned Collins a Grammy Award for Best Folk Performance.

And she has hardly been coasting on her early catalog. Collins has released 55 albums over the course of her career, and her 2022 album Spellbound marked a significant first: It was the first album in her decades-long career written entirely by Collins herself.

The farewell tour will also feature some familiar faces along the way. Selected dates include appearances by Mary Chapin Carpenter, Rosanne Cash, Amanda Shires, Richard Thompson, Bruce Cockburn, The High Kings, Elles Bailey and Livingston Taylor.

Collins is also documenting this chapter of her career. Portions of the tour are being filmed for an upcoming documentary about her life, music and legacy.

So while Sweet Judy Blue Eyes: The Farewell Tour represents a genuine ending for Collins, don’t expect the singer to simply disappear once the final tour date is over. After more than six decades of recording and performing, Collins summed up her approach to whatever comes next in four words:

“The work never ends.”

1998 Live Album Made Country Music History—And Its Record Remains Untouched Nearly 30 Years Later

When it comes to country music, few artists have enjoyed the kind of commercial success that legend Garth Brooks has.

The country superstar built a career spanning several impressive milestones, including many sold-out shows and tours, but one of his biggest achievements dates back to 1998, which is when he released an album that would go on to make music history.

On November 17, 1998, Brooks released Double Live, a two-disc collection of performances recorded during various concert dates.

Rather than featuring recorded studio tracks, the album captured the energy of his live shows, allowing listeners who couldn’t be in the audience to experience the excitement of a Brooks concert from home.

It turned out to be exactly what the fans wanted.

The album, which featured live performances of his most recognizable hits—like “Friends in Low Places,” “The Dance,” and “The Thunder Rolls”— debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, selling more than 1 million copies in its first week.

And its success didn’t stop there.

Nearly three decades later, Double Live remains a record-setting release.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has certified the album 25-times Platinum, making it the highest-certified country album in U.S. history.

It also holds the distinction of being the highest-certified live album in the country. Since it is a two-disc release, the RIAA counts both discs toward the certification total, which means 25 million certified units do not represent 25 million individual copies sold.

It’s a remarkable achievement, particularly as live albums rarely generate the same commercial success as major studio releases; however, Brooks tapped into something his fans craved.

Shania Twain’s “Come on Over” lands in the second spot with 20 million in sales, followed by Brooks dominating the following spots with “No Fences” at No. 3 with 18 million nd “Triple Live” with 13 million.

Dixie Chicks’ “Wide Open Spaces” rounds out the top 5 with 13 million.

“Double Live” wasn’t just a celebration of concerts and live music—it became a defining moment in his legacy.

Three decades later, Brooks is continuing to entertain and inspire audiences, this time taking fans on a nostalgic trip back to the ‘90s, as the “Blame It All On My Roots” Arena Tour brings back elements of his iconic 1996 arena shows, including the famous Drum Pod, along with a 360-degree stage configuration.

And following in the footsteps of “Double Live,” he’s also recording performances for an upcoming live album, “Killer Live.”

Only time will tell if it’ll see the same success as the 1998 record-breaking release.

Richard Heene told authorities his 6-year-old son had floated off in a homemade balloon in 2009; he pleaded guilty to a felony and was sentenced to 90 days in jail

Richard Heene was sentenced to 90 days in jail in December 2009 after falsely reporting that his 6-year-old son, Falcon Heene, had floated away in a homemade helium balloon in Colorado.

The case, known worldwide as the “Balloon Boy” incident, triggered a major search, disrupted airport operations and drew hours of live television coverage before authorities discovered that the boy was safe at home.

Heene pleaded guilty to a felony charge of attempting to influence a public official in November 2009, according to History. His wife, Mayumi Heene, also pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of making a false report and was sentenced to 20 days in jail.

The sentences were handed down on Dec. 23, 2009, in Fort Collins, Colorado. Both parents were also ordered to complete community service and faced restrictions against making money from the incident for four years.

The case became one of the most widely discussed news stories of 2009 after a homemade, saucer-shaped balloon drifted across Colorado while emergency crews searched for the missing child. The investigation later found that Falcon had been hiding inside the family home.

The incident began around 11 a.m. on Oct. 15, 2009, when Richard Heene contacted the Federal Aviation Administration. He reported that a large helium balloon in his family’s backyard had come loose and that his young son might have climbed inside before it took off.

Heene, a handyman and amateur scientist, had built the silver, flying saucer-shaped craft as part of his experiments. After contacting the FAA, he called a local television station and asked for a helicopter to follow the balloon. Mayumi Heene later called 911.

Authorities quickly began tracking the balloon. Search-and-rescue teams and news crews followed it from the ground and the air as it drifted away from the family’s home in Fort Collins, Colorado.

The Colorado National Guard sent two helicopters to follow the craft. Denver International Airport also briefly shut down a runway as the balloon moved into its flight path.

At about 1:35 p.m., the balloon landed in a field roughly 50 miles from where it had started. Rescue workers found no child inside, raising fears that Falcon had fallen from the balloon while it was in the air.

Officials launched a large ground search to find the missing boy. Later that afternoon, authorities announced that Falcon was safe at home.

The child had been hiding in the house during the search. According to CBS News, his hiding place was identified as a space above the family garage, where he had reportedly spent hours.

The discovery raised questions about the family’s original account. The situation took another turn that evening when the Heenes appeared on CNN’s Larry King Live.

During the interview, Falcon was asked about the incident and why he had not come out while people were looking for him. He replied, per NPR, “You guys said we did this for the show.”

His answer quickly drew public attention and added to suspicions that the balloon incident had been staged.

In November 2009, Richard Heene pleaded guilty to a felony charge of attempting to influence a public official. Prosecutors said the false report had led authorities to begin a search-and-rescue mission that attracted widespread media attention.

Police later said the parents had staged the incident to attract attention and help secure a reality television show.

The family had previously appeared on the reality series Wife Swap. Prosecutors argued that the couple wanted publicity after efforts to secure a television show had failed.

At the Dec. 23 sentencing hearing, Larimer County District Judge Stephen Schapanski ordered Richard Heene to serve 90 days in jail. His sentence included 60 days of work release, allowing him to continue working as a construction contractor during the day while spending his nights in jail.

Heene was scheduled to begin serving his sentence on Jan. 11, 2010. The judge delayed the start so he could spend the holidays with his family.

During the hearing, Richard Heene apologized to the emergency workers and members of the community affected by the search.

“I do want to reiterate that I’m very, very sorry. And I want to apologize to all the rescue workers out there and the people that got involved in the community. That’s it,” he said.

The judge also barred the couple from earning money from books, television programs, movies or other deals connected to the incident for four years. Violating the terms could result in their probation being revoked.

Prosecutors said the search had used significant public resources. Two National Guard helicopters alone cost about $16,000 to operate during the response. Other expenses included law enforcement overtime, support from nearby agencies and damage to the field where the balloon landed.

Richard Heene was later ordered to pay $36,000 in restitution for the costs linked to the search.

In March 2010, he completed his time in jail and moved to home detention with an ankle monitor after serving part of his sentence under work release.

Richard Heene said he pleaded guilty to protect his wife, who was a Japanese citizen and feared possible deportation if she faced a more serious conviction. Mayumi Heene also maintained that the incident had not been staged as authorities claimed.

In December 2020, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis pardoned Richard and Mayumi Heene. The governor said the family had already served its sentences and that it was time to move beyond the incident.

The pardon removed the criminal convictions from their records, giving Richard Heene the chance to pursue opportunities that had been affected by his felony conviction.

The case returned to the spotlight in July 2025 with the release of Netflix’s documentary Trainwreck: Balloon Boy. The film revisited the 2009 events and featured the family discussing the accusations, their memories of the incident and the public reaction.

Richard Heene continued to deny that he had planned the incident to gain television attention. The documentary brought renewed interest to the case, more than 15 years after the balloon first drifted across Colorado.

Val Chmerkovskiy Under Fire for Now-Deleted ‘DWTS’ Ballroom Comment After Wife Jenna Johnson’s Clash with Carrie Ann Inaba

Val Chmerkovskiy is being criticized by Dancing with the Stars fans after posting a now-deleted comment seemingly aimed at the judges.

Hours after his wife, Jenna Johnson, received a harsh critique for her samba from judge Carrie Ann Inaba, the DWTS pro dancer posted a TikTok video with the comment, “You almost saw Fresh Prince enter the ballroom last night,” according to a screenshot shared by Page Six.

The comment has since been deleted, but many fans interpreted the remark as a reference to Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star Will Smith’s violent outburst toward Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars ceremony. During the live Oscars broadcast, Smith jumped onstage and slapped Rock after the comedian made a joke about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith.

Chmerkovskiy’s post came after Johnson’s choreography for her Week 5 Samba with actor Harry Shum Jr. was heavily criticized by the judges, most notably by Inaba, who went so far as to read aloud the ballroom definition of a “lift” as she chastised the pro dancer on live TV for breaking the dance rule.

During the live DWTS broadcast on Oct. 13, Chmerkovskiy did not hide his disapproval of judges Inaba, Bruno Tonioli and Derek Hough as they critiqued his wife’s samba. Chmerkovskiy could be seen making faces and shaking his head in disgust as the judges’ scores were announced.

In the comment section to a now-viral TikTok video that captured the moment, Chmerkovskiy wrote, “[Put] some respect on her name. [Carrie Ann’s] tripping talking to her like that,” he wrote.

Some fans supported Chmerkovskiy in the comment section, with one writing, “Love you Val, as you should! I would be ten toes down behind my spouse too.”

Others felt Chmerkovskiy’s “Fresh Prince” comment went too far.

On the r/dancingwiththestars subreddit, multiple viewers felt that Chmerkovskiy should be reprimanded for his remark.

“I can’t imagine saying something like that in a public form and keeping my job.” one commenter wrote. “It’s ok to be upset with CAI, and even hate her, it’s a total other thing to threaten violence against another person.”

“HR would be hearing many words. I hope they are hearing many words. In no way shape or form is it OK to threaten your coworker because they did their job correctly and did the thing they were paid to do,” another wrote.

“He should at least be reprimanded and made to apologize. I’m not a huge CAI defender but she literally was doing her job (correctly),” a third added.

“If he’s not reprimanded for this…, he better speak live on next week’s episode and publicly apologize to CAI in front of everyone,” another wrote, “This [expletive] ain’t okay.”

Chmerkovskiy has not yet publicly apologized or explained his deleted post.

Interestingly, two of Will Smith’s former Fresh Prince of Bel-Air co-stars, Alfonso Ribeiro and Tatyana Ali, are on Dancing With the Stars this season (Ribeiro is the show’s co-host).

Dancing With the Stars airs on Tuesdays on ABC and Disney+.
