Why Do Some Golden Retrievers Have White or Very Light Coats?

So if you’re wondering why this beautiful little Golden Retriever puppy has such a solid white coat instead of a darker golden hue or even auburn, there’s a good answer.

When Goldens have this lighter color, they’re known as English Golden Retrievers, and yes, the American Kennel Club recognizes them.

Though they have a different lineage than the American Golden Retrievers, they are all part of the recognized Golden Retriever breed.

For a little bit of genetics context, all dogs get their coat colors from two types of pigments: eumelanin, which produces black and brown, and pheomelanin, which creates red, yellow, cream, and gold.

Then Golden Retrievers have a special genetic pattern known as “ee” that prevents any black pigment in their coat.

They only have pheomelanin, which gives them those gorgeous golden-colored coats.

So even though we may call them white Golden Retrievers and they look white or cream, like this adorable puppy, they are actually just a very, very light shade of the classic Golden Retriever.

According to Snowy Pines White Labs, English Golden Retrievers are actually labeled as light-golden, but breeders will call them white or cream to help differentiate them.

English or white Golden Retrievers also tend to be a bit stockier with a more robust head than American Goldens.

They also typically have a more defined neck than their American counterparts.

English or American Golden Retrievers—they’re all gorgeous pups, and they make for adorable little puppies.

However, some environmental factors can contribute to a Golden Retriever’s hair color. Sunlight, especially in the summer, can lighten a dog’s hair.

Puppies are like little balls of fluff with paws. Even though they’re small, puppies have some oversized body parts they need to grow into as they develop. Those big round bellies and giant paws seem mismatched with their tiny physique.

Certain breeds like Basset Hounds, Cocker Spaniels, and French Bulldogs inherit extra-large ears. Bean the teeny dapple Dachshund puppy is a great example of her breed’s iconic ears — they’re the first things you see when she approaches you.

In the TikTok from @missbeanween, the pretty puppy looked like a a tiny peanut with ears as she strutted down the hallway toward her mom. Bean looked quite confident and didn’t seem to be in any hurry as her little legs scampered along the carpet.

What Is a Dapple Dachshund?

A dapple Dachshund is any Dachshund that carries the merle (M) gene. This genetic mutation dilutes random sections of a dog’s coat color, which creates those beautiful marbled or mottled patterns.

Double dapple Dachshunds (MM) result when two single dapple (merle) Dachshunds are bred together. Double dapples usually have more white fur, with some being fully white. Reputable breeders do not breed two dapples together due to their inherent health issues like hearing and vision impairment.

Part of Licorice’s charm is his squished face. A signature trait of the breed, called brachycephalia, which means having a shorter-than-average head, Exotic Shorthair cats were bred to look similar to Persian cats but with a shorter coat. This face type makes Licorice have an extremely round face, resembling an emoji. He’s so captivating!

Everyone wants to be the special “chosen one!” Parrots like Brody aren’t usually swayed by people who only feed or care for them, though they do imprint when hand-fed as a young bird. These flock animals play favorites based on a few key factors.

In the wild, Parrots form strong monogamous bonds with one, while living in large social flocks. Domesticated, they choose their favorites with the same evolutionary pair-bonding instincts, generally choosing one person as their “monogamous mate.”

This is especially true as they reach maturity between 2 and 4 years old, when their hormones are highest, driving them to have one reliable, dedicated, and sometimes intense bond with a single person.

Parrots learn best through positive associations, energy, and body language, and they’re more drawn to humans who respect those boundaries. A lot of this comes with trust, favoring people who allow them a healthy amount of independence in and out of their cage, never forcing interactions. I love buffalo wings. I eat them more than I should, but I just can’t help it! I know I’m not the only one, either. The only thing I love more than buffalo wings is probably cats; they’re pretty neck and neck for me. But what if we could have both?

Alivia’s cat’s pregnancy was completely accidental, but at least she knows one thing: the father must have been orange too. All four kittens were orange, and they were all perfectly healthy. In another video, she says she wants to get her spayed after this litter.

For now, though, she has four adorable buffalo wings to look after. Mom is in good spirits, too; this is not the first time she’s had kittens. She made sure all of them latched, and she’ll be taking care of them, mostly on her own. When they start growing up a little, she’ll let them be more independent.

This is not their first time dealing with this: Alivia has all of the supplies to deal with kittens, and after this litter, hopefully she’ll be able to get spayed. This is unfortunately common for people who live in more rural areas: there’s less access to veterinary services and low-cost spay options.

Alivia hasn’t said if she’s going to be keeping any of the kittens or not, but I hope she keeps the first one: he just looked so little and sweet! Even if she doesn’t, though, I know all of these kittens will find the most loving homes.

How to Access Low-Cost Veterinary Services

If you live in an area that doesn’t have many options when it comes to veterinary care, it can be super stressful. In a lot of cases, the only options around are expensive, and pet parents in that situation might choose other options like euthanasia or surrender.

Many animal shelters and pet stores will hold clinics to help provide low-cost essential services to pets whose parents can’t afford regular veterinary care. There are options like:

• PetSmart, which has free shot clinics every Saturday.

Every New Year’s, my family writes wishes on special paper, lights it, and watches the little pieces float up before they burn out and drift down as ash. It always feels a bit magical. Now pet parents on TikTok are filming their pets watching floating paper as part of the “ghost paper” trend, and I thought I knew what to expect.

Then I saw Foxy. She’s a wonderfully round orange cat with sweetly crossed eyes, and she watches the paper rise with such intense concentration that I forgot to watch the paper myself. If you’re a dog lover, it generally doesn’t matter what kind of puppy you meet. They’re all pretty easy to fall in love with. But a tiny Shar-Pei puppy with an unusually fluffy coat takes cuteness to an entirely new level.

And this little one from @minihippoland could easily be mistaken for a tiny black teddy bear. Just look at this ridiculously squishy face in this Sept. 14 Instagram video:

The account playfully asked whether this was a black bear or a puppy, and plenty of people seemed ready to take this little “bear” home either way.

@theodore_bear_bean commented, “Take my money; take my heart. He can have all the steak and chicken if he wants. I will be his personal chef.”

With that velvety black coat and perfectly adorable face, the reaction is easy to understand.

What Is a Bear Coat Shar-Pei?

Although the extra fluff might make this pup look a little different from the Shar-Pei most people recognize, @minihippoland confirmed in the comments that the longer hair is natural within the breed and is known as a bear coat Shar-Pei.

Shar-Peis actually come in three coat types: horse, brush, and bear. According to A-Z Animals, only horse and brush coats meet official breed standards, while a bear coat is considered a fault in the show ring. The extra-fluffy coat comes from recessive genes, meaning both parents must carry the gene for a puppy to inherit it.

But that extra fluff may work in this pup’s favor. The outlet notes that bear-coat Shar-Peis may be the healthiest of the three because they’re less prone to skin infections, although their longer coats require more maintenance.

Speaking of those famous wrinkles, they’re not just for looks. A-Z Animals explains that Shar-Peis were originally bred as farm dogs and livestock guardians, and their loose skin folds offered a practical advantage. If a predator grabbed hold, the extra skin allowed them to twist around and fight back.

The TikTok from @rescueme_atl told Hopper’s story and shared the very special farewell they had planned.

“After waiting 500 days right here, we came to tell him the news,” the on-screen text read as Hopper was retrieved from his kennel for the last time. “But before we did, we wanted to make sure he knew those 500 days meant something.”

The doors were held open for Hopper to walk through as he was greeted with an entire crowd of shelter staff members and volunteers who were all a part of his journey. Every person in the group congratulated Hopper with hugs, kisses, and lots of loving pets.

“That he was never forgotten,” the story continued. “That each day he waited, he had an army fighting for him. And they all wanted to be there when he realized that someone in the room was about to change his life.”

Where Is Hopper Now?

The second half of the video featured Hopper joyfully bounding into the car with his new mom to head to his forever home, which happens to be on the beach 2,000 miles away.

“Hopper and his new family walked out the front doors together and began the three-day drive home to Newport Beach, California,” the caption shared. “At this very moment… [Hopper] is at his new home on the beach in California with his family.”

The social media post explained how fearful and anxious Hopper was when he first arrived at the shelter. He soon won over everyone he met and before long, Hopper had an entire “army” determined to make sure he got his happy ending.

The TikTok post expressed gratitude for everyone who helped Hopper along with way and noted how his life has completely changed for the better.

What the toy doesn’t immediately reveal is a hidden trick one shopper found. “I like to put treats at the base of the cherries before we leave the house to keep her occupied for a bit.  The rubber is heavy-duty and holds the treat well,” the clever pet parent wrote in their review on Target.com.

That small design change turns the Boots & Barkley Cherries Dog Toy from a standard toy into an enrichment activity. Hiding treats gives a food-motivated pup something to put their energy and attention toward.

Having a furry companion’s unconditional love and support means showing up for them when they need us, like during post-surgery recovery. When my Staffy Franklin had a mass removed a couple years ago, he had a rough time recovering after. Keeping a recovering pup happy begins with the basics: giving them a quiet spot away from traffic and noise to rest, putting nonslip mats and rugs around the house, and offering their comfort items—maybe even a shirt that smells like you along with blankets and stuffed toys.

Other than a change in scenery (by a window, on the porch), keep a predictable schedule to prevent unnecessary anxiety, including short bathroom breaks. And with being sedentary more than usual, they’ll need adequate mental stimulation to prevent boredom, so offer lick mats, puzzle feeders, or toys with treats.

Wow, Sprinkles is wonderful! He and his brothers were found in a less-than-adequate enclosure. After he was rescued, Sprinkles received treatment for his injuries and has spent the last seven months in a foster home. Through it all, the pup remains hopeful that one day he will find his forever home.

Greek Garden Maine Coons has something really special with Nyx and her amazing beans! As captioned, this beauty “gets her polydactyl toes from her father, RW QGC James Bond of GreekGarden, who also has 25 toes.” So basically, like father, like daughter because it literally runs in the family right down to the exact number of extra digits.

Clearly, Nyx is one of the universe’s favorites for being blessed with this epic bean display. Someone must’ve tossed in an extra dose of glitter while Nyx baked in the womb, because her humongous rabbit feet are straight out of Bambi.

Cats typically have 18 toes, with five on each front paw and four on the back paws, and they’re deemed polydactyl with anything more. Any kitty born with 25 toes is very rare, only seen in a small number of kittens, smashing a bunch of extra beans together for our viewing pleasure! The most ever recorded was as high as 29 toes, but that’s incredibly extreme and not likely.

Some breeds, like Maine Coons, are predisposed to being polydactyl, with a whopping 40% of these cats having extra toes. The condition is passed down from one parent carrying an autosomal dominant gene, giving the kitten a 50% chance of inheriting an impressive bean haul.

Some dogs wait in shelters longer than expected and begin to lose hope. The more these dogs get overlooked, the less chance they have of getting adopted due to a false perception that there’s something wrong with them.

Mary Poppins the 5-year-old Pit Bull mix is Broward County Humane Society’s longest resident. Staff members wanted to make sure Mary felt special and loved despite her lengthy stay, so they took her out for a very special field trip.

The TikTok from @humanebroward told Mary’s story and why she was treated to a special day.

“Five-year-old Mary Poppins is our shelter’s longest resident,” the caption shared. “She’s watched so many dogs around her leave with their new families, but sadly, it’s never been her turn. So, we decided to treat this sweet girl to a dream day out of the shelter.”

Mary was surrendered to the shelter when her family’s landlord no longer allowed her to stay. The pretty Pittie suffers from severe skin allergies, which are intensified in the shelter environment. Shelter team members knew she needed a day to be treated like a queen.

Mary Met an NHL Stanley Cup Champ

Clips of Mary riding in a car, running around outside, eating French fries, and shopping for plushies were just the beginning. She was granted VIP access to the Florida Panthers IcePlex and got to “rub paws” with NHL star player Sam Bennett.

“Thanks to MVP Sam Bennett of the Florida Panthers, and his Benny’s Buddies organization, Mary’s adoption fee has been paid for,” the caption revealed as Mary and Sam hung out together. “Every time Sam scores a goal, a pet at the shelter benefits!”

The canine cutie showed her heart of gold during her entire day out. Mary is hoping someone will give her a chance to be a part of a forever family.
