But another funny thing your dog probably does is stare at you while they go poop. Weirdly intimate and definitely a bizarre experience, you might be wondering: Why are they doing that? Should I stare back? Do I give them privacy? What do I do? Help!

We spoke with Ali Smith, dog behavior consultant for Wag Hotels, to get more information on why dogs stare when pooping. From looking for permission to go and seeking reassurance that they're safe to keep going to training during puppyhood and more, Smith shares some theories about why dogs stare at you while they're pooping. It's honestly so interesting to learn about the behavioral and training reasons behind it, and you'll never think about this seemingly odd dog behavior the same way again.

And so, without further ado doo (sorry), here are the potential reasons why your dog may stare at you while pooping, according to a dog behaviorist expert.

The Vulnerability Factor: Watching Their Back

One reason dogs might watch you while going number two is because of the vulnerability that comes with it.

"I'm of the opinion that dogs stare because they're watching you for signals that you're not comfortable so they know whether they're safe to continue pooping or not," Smith says.

Pack Dynamics: Looking to the 'Leader' for Reassurance

"As far as I'm aware, there isn't any actual research on this, but my theory is less 'pack' in the traditional sense, it's more of a trusted partner," Smith says. So, when it comes to your dog staring at you when pooping, they may be looking to you as someone they can trust while they're in a vulnerable position and who can reassure them that they're safe.

Seeking Permission: 'Is It OK If I Go Here?'

Sometimes, staring while pooping could actually be due to their mindset in puppyhood. They might be looking for permission that this is the right place to go.

"When we toilet train dogs, we watch them really closely for signs they have to poop and to make sure that when they squat they do poop," Smith says. "So, I do wonder if we accidentally are training them that we need to watch them poop, and whether them staring at us is just a natural side affect of that. Honestly, behavior and training is fascinating! We train so much by accident it's insane."

Is the 'Poop Stare' Actually Affection?

According to some experts, the "poop stare" can actually be a sign of affection. Because dogs are such social creatures, staring and maintaining eye contact while pooping is just one more way to bond.

Hard staring is an intense and unwavering look, while loving eye contact is more gentle and relaxed. We've all heard that dogs have evolved from wolves, but that begs the question: why don't wolves stare at a "leader" while they're going potty?

"Firstly, because dogs aren't wolves, and even when given their freedom, dogs don't behave like wolves. They're social animals, but [they] don't have a full 'pack' structure," Smith says. "Next to that, I do wonder if it's accidental training like I said earlier. It might be why they look as uncomfortable doing it as we do when they do it!"

Should You Stare Back? How to Handle the Awkward Eye Contact

When it comes to whether you should stare back, Smith says you don't have to, and honestly breaking the habit might help your dog feel more secure.

"I mean...if we're asking do you need to? No. Is it probably as weird for them as it is us? Yeah, I think so," Smith says. "If either of my theories are correct, it would mean with one, they're looking for safety cues, they can watch you without you watching them. If it's accidental training, then breaking that pattern might be a good thing for you both."

Somebody threw a backyard rager. The guest list had one special guest name on it. He wore nothing but a bubble mask. He went absolutely feral and it was the best day of his life.

The comments came in hot with their reactions to the hilarious absurdity:

"The bubble mask is taking me out 😂"

Hold up for a moment. A blue French Bulldog on a blow-up water slide with a bubble-covered face at a backyard foam rave is an image that requires a moment. Take a moment and take it all in.

"The fact he does not give two Fs has me screaming 😂"

He is not cautious about the foam. He is not uncertain about the foam. He has fully committed to the foam and he has zero notes about any of it. Well, maybe just one…goggles.

"It's amazing how every Frenchie is different, we got ours a little pool and he just barked at it 😆"

This makes the whole thing even more relatable. Some Frenchies bark at pools like its the enemy. This one showed up with his face fully immersed in the bubbles and fully committed.

And then the comment that closes the whole story:

"I bet he slept so hard that night ❤️"

He did. He absolutely did. But beyond the bubble-covered face and the feral energy there is a real reason why this specific activity is so good for this specific breed.

Why Water Play Is Actually Perfect for French Bulldogs—and How to Do It Safely

According to Poetic French Bulldogs, French Bulldogs have flat faces that affect how they breathe and manage heat. This means they feel the heat faster than most other dogs and need a little extra looking after when temperatures go up outside. In temperatures above 75 degrees, it’s recommended to keep outdoor sessions to no more than 10 to 15 minutes at most and choose the cooler parts of the day.

Water play is one of the best fixes for this. A shallow kiddie pool in a shaded spot gives a Frenchie a way to cool off while staying active and having fun. A few inches of water is plenty. Throw in some floating toys and most Frenchies will take it from there. Some paw at the water. Some just lie down in it and call it a day. This one had a blow-up water slide and a face full of bubbles and absolutely no complaints.

Sprinkler games also work really well. A gentle sprinkler lets a Frenchie run through the spray getting the cooling mist without the commitment of a full soak.

Good to be aware of before you set anything up: not all Frenchies are natural swimmers. Their small bodies mean they can need extra support in deep water. Stick to shallow areas where your dog can stand comfortably and stay close to you throughout.

If your Frenchie starts drooling a lot, their gums look bright red, they start wheezing or their panting just will not settle down even after a break: that's your sign to get them somewhere cool right and out of the heat right away.

After any water session dry them off thoroughly especially around the facial wrinkles and ear canals where moisture tends to hang around.

The foam rave was intentional. This little blue Frenchie was made for exactly this moment.

Many dogs and cats end up in a shelter later in life due to various reasons, including a parent's health issues, relocation, or financial difficulties. The transition from a loving and stable home to a shelter environment is traumatic for these animals, and the wait for a new family can seem endless.

Bojangles the 10-year-old Tuxedo cat recently had to say goodbye to her longtime parent and is now at the Cranston Animal Shelter hoping for a second chance at happiness.

The Instagram post from @cranstonanimalshelter told Bojangles' story and the great loss the pretty kitty is experiencing.

"At 10 years old, Bojangles never imagined she would find herself in a shelter," the caption shared. "She came to us after her beloved owner moved into assisted living. For years, it was just the two of them — quiet companionship, shared routines, and the kind of bond that only grows stronger with time. They were each other’s whole world."

The Tuxedo cat is struggling to acclimate to the chaotic environment of the shelter after so many years in a stable home.

"Now Bojangles is trying to make sense of a life that changed overnight," the story continued. "She’s understandably a little nervous here. The shelter is loud, unfamiliar, and overwhelming for a cat who has spent her life in the comfort of a loving home. But beneath that uncertainty is a sweet girl who simply needs time, patience, and a soft place to land."

The shelter staff is hoping that they can find Bojangles a new forever family soon so she can enjoy the happiness she deserves. The feline fur baby just needs someone to give her a chance.

"Bojangles doesn’t need much," the caption explained. "Just a cozy spot to nap, a kind hand to reassure her, and someone willing to open their heart to a cat who has so much love left to give. Our greatest hope is to spare her a long shelter stay. Senior cats like Bojangles are so often overlooked, but they make incredible companions — loving, calm, and deeply grateful."

How to Help a Grieving Cat Heal

Though cats can still have the stereotype of being cold and aloof, felines are actually very loving and experience grief when they lose a loved one. Some ways to comfort your cat through a loss include:

• Spend more time with them and talk to them throughout the day so they are soothed by the sound of your voice.
• Be extra affectionate with snuggling, petting, and playing.

• Be patient and give them time to grieve.

With lots of love and compassion, a cat going through loss can receive the healing they need and find their joy again.

Every living thing has to experience everything for the first time. It's really overwhelming when you think about it: there legitimately is a first time for everything. Like, everything. Ever. It's endless!

The Kitty Widgets live in a warehouse: the original warehouse cat was just one, but she had babies! Now, there's a whole family there, and they're having a great time discovering life. This video was taken in their office, which had just been mopped.

Something tells me they were not fans of the floor. They just had no idea how to navigate it: they've never felt water on their paws before, most likely, plus it's slippery! It's a recipe for disaster!

This floor is the source of a lot of their problems, and I think it's absolutely hilarious. For example, right after this mopping disaster, there was a blanket disaster that scared them just as much:

This was most likely one of their first times, if not the very first time, ever seeing a blanket. Plus, it was one of the ones with fringe around out! Those freak me out. I can't even imagine being a kitten!

Kittens Are Naturally Curious

Though these kittens are seeing a lot of things for the first time, there's nothing to worry about. Every new experience they have is genuinely good for them. It gets them used to things before they go off to their forever homes!

Kittens will naturally want to explore their surroundings when they start getting old enough to walk steadily. Their mom will start to let them, too! You should allow it, though there are some safety tips to making sure they don't get hurt:

• Always supervise them.
• Put obstacles in their way that you know are safe, like blankets, toys, and pillows.
• Watch them for signs of actual stress and bring them back to their "home base" when they get anxious.

What would you do if you were faced with a life-and-death situation in the wilderness with your dog by your side? Most pet parents hope never to answer that question.

Sometimes, however, you have to make a split-second decision. And for one woman hiking in the Canadian Rockies, that split second came last week.

The unnamed woman, who posted a video online of an encounter with a grizzly bear, was out for a morning walk at a wilderness camp in Kananaskis, Alberta. She was not far from the camp when a grizzly bear appeared, and she was with her leashed dog.

In the next 60 seconds, she screamed and shouted as many times as she could to keep the bear away from her dog.

When Instincts Say Run, You Might Be Better off Staying

In the video, the woman repeatedly says, "No," "Stop," and "Enough" to keep the bear away. Her voice is firm and steady as the bear is trying to reach her dog.

Many viewers noticed how calm the dog remained. He felt safe beside his mom and never let a single voice.

As one viewer commented under the YouTube video, "Her dog not barking once. He was like, I'm not adding more to this situation."

One Minute of Sustained Tension

Jelmer de Blois, a local hiking guide who shared the video online, explained that the bear was probably a younger grizzly. He believes the bear was more interested in the dog, as the video shows. However, curiosity from a 600-pound wild animal is a dangerous one.

Just watching the video will make your heart race. Viewers under the YouTube video admitted as well.

One commenter said, "My heart is pounding. I would have passed out." Another joked, "I think I would have shyt my pants about 21 times. Thank god this lady and her beautiful dog are safe."

And as always, there were funny comments, as one said, "The bear decided she was too unstable to mess with."

How to Act if You See a Bear?

The common advice when encountering bears is to play dead. But when you have a dog by your side, that is not an option. Even the best-trained dog might not be able to play dead when a 600-pound wild animal sniffs him.

The National Park Service recommends standing your ground and identifying yourself as a human. That is what this lady did. She shouted "Enough" and "Stop" in a firm tone.

Do Not Forget Bear Spray

The woman in the video didn't have bear spray with her, and that might be her single biggest mistake. If you plan to spend time in bear country, always bring spray with you. That is the most important practical rule to follow. The next one? Always keep your dog leashed.

Watching this video might be nerve-racking. But it also serves as a good reminder of the bond most pet parents have with their loved ones. Faced with an impossible situation, she never stopped protecting her dog!

I have a weakness for animals being ridiculously good parents. Show me a mama dog doting on her puppy, a cat carrying her kittens around like precious little potatoes or a bird feeding its babies, and suddenly I'm canceling all my plans because I need to stare at them for the next hour.

So naturally, this tiny Chihuahua family completely wrecked me. These sweet little dogs only had one puppy, and somewhere along the way it became very obvious that absolutely nobody in this family had any intention of letting that baby leave. Frankly, I support the decision.

The number of puppies in a litter depends on a dog's breed, age, and overall health. Chihuahuas often have relatively small litters, commonly ranging from one to three puppies, though larger litters can happen.

Having just one puppy, sometimes called a singleton puppy, is less common but perfectly possible.

For families who aren't planning to breed their dogs, veterinarians generally recommend spaying and neutering. These procedures help prevent unplanned litters and can reduce the risk of certain health and behavioral problems. When you're an animal in a shelter, anything that helps you stand out is going to work in your favor. Though plenty of "standard" pets are adopted, having that little extra charming thing definitely won't hurt.

Mr. Shrimp the Cat, according to his mom, was one of the shyest cats the shelter had to offer. He was really struggling with shelter life, which is a sad reality for a lot of animals. Unfortunately, another part of that is that the shy ones are often left behind.

Mr. Shrimp's mom took a chance on him, though, definitely in part due to his precious milk mustache. Since she did, this sweet kitten is coming out of his shell! He might still be a little shy sometimes, but it's getting better every single day.

Mr. Shrimp's shyness really shines when he's around strangers, in a new place, or hears a lot of loud noise. When he's playing with his favorite toy, however, he's transformed from "shy kitten" to "aspiring professional wrestler," and it's amazing:

Why Are Shy Pets Left Behind?

When you go to a rescue, you might notice that some of the animals who have been there the longest are the ones with labels like "shy" or "scared" on their pages. This is true for any species and any age group. Even kittens!

Shy pets, even when they're "desirable," like a puppy/kitten/beloved breed, are overlooked in shelters every day. People are often not as understanding of rescuing as they think, and they take something like a pet being labeled "shy" to mean they:

• Won't want to play.
• Won't want to cuddle.
• Will take a long time to adjust.
• Could be a bite risk.

However, even the not-shy pets in a shelter can become shy in your home, and odds are, that's exactly what's going to happen. Everyone needs some time to adjust: take a chance on the shy ones! It might just change your life!

He's not even the same species, and yet he's the perfect foster parent to these tiny kittens.

What Makes German Shepherds So Nurturing?

German Shepherds are known for their excellent protective instincts, making them natural guard dogs.

That's why they're also the most popular dog breed in police forces, as they're highly intelligent and easy to train, as well as extremely capable athletes.

For a little bit of history, the German Shepherd was originally bred in the late 1800s by Max von Stephanitz in Germany, according to the American Kennel Club.

As early as 1910, these dogs were working with police and military forces, according to the Misty Ridge Boarding Kennel.

They also have an incredible sense of smell, which makes them excellent dogs for tracing narcotics, explosives, and humans.

With their daunting size and that stereotypical image of a guard dog, we sometimes forget that these pups are also extremely loyal, nurturing, and protective, especially of their own puppies as well as vulnerable creatures like tiny kittens.

Because the protective instincts of German Shepherds are so deep in their genetic makeup, they are natural protectors of anyone in their pack, including humans and new additions like foster kittens.

This is very evident as Zero, the German Shepherd, licks the tiny kittens. Though one Orange Kitten is a bit more trepidatious than the other at first, in the caption, Zero's parent explains that Cheeto now loves to be licked and groomed by his foster dad.

Senior dogs in shelters often wait longer for adoption. Potential pet parents are hesitant to bring home an older canine due to shorter life span and potential health issues. Yet these precious pooches still have so much love to give and want to start their next chapter with a loving family.

In the TikTok from @cassondrachristman, Grandma Ziggy was treated to some special treats on the way to the airport for her flight to her new family. Apparently, the stunning senior made quite an impression on her new mom when she got a glimpse of Grandma Ziggy online.

"Grandma Ziggy has found her forever home!!!" the caption raved. "Her fabulous mom saw her video and reached out to the Maui humane society team, next thing ya know Grandma Ziggy is getting funnel cake with transfer manager Lora and I."

The pretty pooch downed the sweet treat before catching one more Maui sunset. Then Grandma Ziggy had a plane to catch, so she got cozy in her crate before boarding her flight to her new life.

Grandma Ziggy Has a New Sister

The video cut to Grandma Ziggy roughhousing with her new fur baby sister Mila, making it clear that this senior sweetie has recaptured her youth. The former shelter dog had a new spring in her step and clearly felt like a pup again.

"[She's] now playing with her new sis like she’s 2 years old again, and yes she is still saying 'who you calling grandma'?!” the story continued.

The final scene of the video showed the two canine sisters snuggling on the couch, having already formed an unbreakable bond. The caption encouraged followers to keep sharing social media posts to help these wonderful dogs get adopted.

Kittens are all born with some similar features: their coats haven't fully come in yet, and their eyes are always the same shade of baby grey. However, it doesn't take very long at all for them to start standing apart from the crowd.

Evermore Maine Coons has some of my favorite kittens ever, and I think this orange boy takes the cake. He's so perfect, especially with the way his belly is nearly entirely white! He legitimately looks like a creamsicle, and the little mohawk on top of his head only makes that better.

He looks like a little lion cub, too. As he gets older, he's only going to get more beautiful: he's a European Maine Coon, which means he's in for:

• A very, very fluffy tail.
• Hairy ears and paws.

He's going to be amazing when he grows up, but honestly, I'll be a little sad to see his baby fur go! It's just so cute.

Do Maine Coon Kittens' Coats Change?

Was anyone else super blonde as a kid, only for your hair to become way less blonde when you grew up? In most of my childhood pictures, I swear, I don't even have eyebrows. The same thing happens to our pets!

As they age, a Maine Coon's fur darkens significantly. Light grey kittens can often become nearly black cats, and these "creamsicle" kittens typically develop a more vibrant orange coat. Exactly how much their colors will deepen depends on the individual cat, but you can expect a decent change.

Maine Coons take about 4 years to reach full-grown, with about half of that time being heavily devoted to developments like:

• Filling out.
• Fluffing up.
• Forming their adult coat.

It's one of the most fascinating transitions ever, and although 4 years may feel like a long time, it's also the blink of an eye. Enjoy it while it lasts!

I admit it, I talk to my houseplants. I talk to my flowers in the garden. I tell them they're doing a great job, compliment new blooms and occasionally apologize when I accidentally step on something. What I don't do is expect them to throw a tennis ball back to me.

Which is exactly why this confused little Maligator has me laughing so hard. Somewhere along the way, he became absolutely convinced that a very polite potted plant is refusing to participate in a rousing game of fetch, and he simply cannot understand why his new friend isn't cooperating.

The hilarious video was shared by @creedbthemali and features a Belgian Malinois standing several feet away from a potted houseplant.

Sitting neatly in front of the plant?

A tennis ball.

The sounds of an owl outside at night can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people. If you're a nature lover, it's probably a reminder of all the amazing wildlife living just outside your door. However, if you're not used to it, hearing owls hooting or screeching at night near your home can be unsettling the first time you experience it. In the quiet of the evening, those bird calls can be a little scary and make it feel like they are much closer than they actually are.

There’s something about nighttime wildlife noises that naturally sparks curiosity and make you wonder what those sounds might mean and why they are occuring in residential areas. Some people even associate owls and their calls with grim superstitions and therefore the cry of an owl is thought to be a harbinger of doom and despair—which makes it all the more disturbing when they hear one hooting just outside of their window.

So what does it really mean when you hear owls hooting by your house at night? Is it good luck, bad luck, or somewhere in between and what attracts owl to certain neighborhoods in the first place? To understand why you’re hearing them (and why it often sounds like they’re so close) keep reading to learn how owls live, communicate, and navigate areas where human development meets their natural habitat.

If you’ve ever wondered what it means when owls hoot near urban areas, you’re not alone. Many people report hearing these birds at night, especially in quiet residential areas where sound travels farther after dark. The truth is, as evening approaches, owls become more active, moving through neighborhoods and this increase in nighttime activity is when you'll usally notice hooting, screeching and owls calling out near your backyard or in your residential area. In the United States, these sounds often come from Great Horned Owls, the Barred Owls, and the Eastern Screech-Owls. Here are some common reasons you'll hear them:

Owls Hoot to Mark and Defend Their Territory

One of the most common reasons for owl hooting is simple: territory. "Owls are highly territorial birds, and their hoots act as calls that warn other owls to stay away." explains says Maria Kincaid, an ornithologist working with FeatherSnap.

She notes that repeated hooting in the same area often indicates an owl could be flying around defending its space rather than signaling anything unusual.

But territory defense isn’t the only reason you might be hearing them.

Owl Hooting Is a Form of Communication

“Owls are wild creatures with territories, therefore, repeated hooting at night is natural owl behavior and does not always carry spiritual significance. Instead, it can just be them communicating with each other,” explains Christine J. Gold, animal medium.

In fact, according to Kincaid, this behavior is used to signal location, connect with a mate, or respond to other owls in the area. What can sound like a mysterious call in the night is often just a structured exchange happening between birds sharing the same landscape.

Still, not every interpretation of owl sounds is purely biological for everyone.

It Could Be a Sign to Trust Your Intuition

For some, hearing an owl repeatedly can feel like more than background noise—it can feel personally meaningful, as if it’s drawing attention inward.

“Owls can arrive when you are missing something that is right in front of you, when you are ignoring your gut, suppressing what you know, or letting noise drown out your inner voice,” says Gold. “The repeated hooting is the spirit world’s way of saying: slow down. Get quiet. You already know what you need to know.”

It's a Visitation from a Loved One

In certain spiritual interpretations, an owl’s presence or repeated calls near a home—especially during emotionally significant times—can carry deeper emotional meaning.

“Many people notice owls appearing or calling near their homes in the days and weeks following a significant loss,” shares Gold. “In my practice, I interpret this as the spirit of someone who has crossed over making themselves known, using the owl’s natural capacity to move between worlds as a vehicle for contact.”

Whether you infer deeper spiritual meaning from the cry of an owl or simply appreciate them as part of the natural soundscape surrounding your home, owl calls are entrancing. There's a reason you only really hear them at night, though.

"Owls are nocturnal, which is why they are more active and we hear them calling more frequently at night," says Kincaid. "Depending on the species, you may hear them year-round—often about an hour after sunset and again just before dawn—while others are more vocal when establishing territory or during the breeding season.

Very rarely will you ever hear an owl vocalizing during the bright daylight hours (though there are a few exceptions to the rule, as we'll touch on shortly). But why have these owls chosen your home as their designated nighttime hangout spot?

Why Owls Are Drawn to Residential Areas Owls thrive in residential areas with trees, open space, and nearby prey.

If you often hear owls near your house in the evening, then those owls probably consider your property fertile hunting grounds. "Hearing an owl close to your home means you've got great habitat for owls!" says Kincaid. "Since residential areas tend to have a good mix of trees and open areas, they offer great habitat for these predatory birds, providing trees to perch in while waiting for prey and places to roost during the day, and if you're lucky, even a place to build a nest. Because residential areas are often hubs for small rodents, rabbits, and large insects, they're a virtual buffet for owls. The open areas in our yards and neighborhoods also provide easy places to fly through, looking for food."

Owls usually oversee a territory of only a few square miles at most, so if they've established themselves near your property, they're probably there to stay, at least for a good long while. That's not a bad thing, though, as they’re essentially providing you with free pest control. If anything, you might even consider them to be good luck!

Other Reasons You May Hear an Owl Near Your Home

However, knowing why owls hunt near your home doesn’t entirely explain why you’re hearing them. Seeing how these birds are notoriously silent hunters, hooting doesn’t offer them any tactical advantage in taking down their prey. So what’s all the noise about? Owls usually vocalize for a few different reasons:

• Territorial Display: When unfamiliar owls encroach on their territory, owls hoot to warn the potential intruders off of their turf. Owls can also use their hoots to determine if that “intruder” is actually a familiar friend. 
• Predator Warning: While owls are formidable predators themselves, they can be hunted by even larger birds of prey or certain mammals like bobcats and foxes. If a potential predator is spotted in the area, owls will hoot to warn their fellow friendly owls of the danger.
• Love Songs: Not only do owls use courtship calls to scout out potential mates, but bonded pairs will also communicate with each other by “dueting.” 

Owls have a lot to give a hoot about, and if there are several owls living in your vicinity, you’ll likely hear them talking to each other at some point. Listen up the next time they’re active, and see if you can pick out the distinct voices of more than one owl!

Owl Symbolism in Spiritual Beliefs and Folklore

Owls can be found on every continent except Antarctica, which means that most human cultures have encountered owls at some point. "The owl is one of the most universally recognized spiritual symbols across human history, and its meanings are remarkably consistent across cultures that had no contact with one another," says Gold. "At its core, the owl represents wisdom, intuition, and the ability to see what is hidden. It is a creature of the night, of the unseen, and of the liminal space between worlds."

While spiritual beliefs and superstitions vary widely depending on what part of the world you’re from, unfortunately, the negative ones seem to have gotten the most cultural traction. These are a few of the most famous myths and cultural beliefs surrounding owls:

• In Ancient Rome, an owl’s hoot was thought to be an omen of imminent death, and according to legend, owls predicted the death of several Roman emperors. 
• In lots of cultures, including many of those in Europe, Asia, and Africa, owls are thought to be the familiars of evil witches, or even shape-shifting witches themselves.
• The Hopi people of the southwestern US associated the burrowing owl with the god of death (though this association was not entirely a negative one).
• Some Australian Aboriginal cultures believed that owls represented the departed souls of women, while others, such as the Noongar people, associated them with dangerous evil spirits of the night. 

Nevertheless, not all superstitions surrounding owls are quite so grim. In Hindu mythology, the sacred steed of the goddess Lakshmi is depicted as an owl, while in ancient Greece, owls were symbolic of Athena, goddess of wisdom (which likely helped solidify the “wise old owl” stereotype). In Japan, owls are often seen as lucky because the Japanese word for “owl,” fukuro, can alternatively be read as something roughly translating to “no hardships!” So you see, there are plenty of positive beliefs surrounding owls, too—it just seems like the spookier ones have more staying power.

When Owl Sounds Are Normal—and When to Be Concerned Hearing owls at night is usually harmless and part of normal wildlife behavior.

Owls can make a lot of sounds beyond simply hooting back and forth. Depending on the species and what message they’re trying to convey in their call, owls can make a large assortment of noises like shrieks, trills, screams,  hisses, whistles, barks, and more. One species, the burrowing owl, even makes a sound imitating a rattlesnake to ward off predators. Once you figure out what kinds of sounds your owls are producing, there’s nothing really inherently worrisome about any of them, even the scary-sounding ones—it’s just owls doing what they do naturally. Even the rare non-nighttime hoot is not usually something to worry about, as crepuscular owls (and the few rare diurnal owl species) may hunt while it’s still light out. That said, if you think you hear an owl hooting at high noon, what you’re actually hearing is most likely a mourning dove. 

But should you be concerned upon hearing an owl? The one time that owl sounds could be a cause for concern is if you have a small pet outside unattended. On rare occasions, hungry owls will go after cats and very small dogs (5 lbs or less) as prey. This is far from common, and other predators pose more of a danger to your small pets (such as coyotes and hawks), but it can happen, and even a non-fatal attack from an owl can leave a little pet seriously injured. When you consider that the opposite is also true—pets can also kill and eat fledgling owls—it’s simply safer for everyone if you keep a close eye on your small outdoor pets when owls are out and active.

Some animal rescue stories start sweet and then get sweeter. This one starts with a baby who had almost everything working against him.

Lt Dan is an orphan colt, and just reading his story makes it hard to see the screen clearly enough to write. I'm an emotional mess over this tiny baby.

The post caption explains that Lt Dan was born with serious health problems, including severe dummy foal syndrome, crooked legs, and three inguinal hernias. His biological mother began rejecting him and even attacking him, which meant he had to be separated for his own safety. That part is heartbreaking, but it also tells you how fragile his situation was.

Lt Dan is an orphan colt. Finding a nurse mare for him would prove nearly impossible. He suffered from dummy foal syndrome. Severe dummy foal syndrome is a life-threatening form of neonatal brain dysfunction in which a foal is unable to stand or nurse, may have seizures or become comatose, and requires intensive veterinary care to have a chance of recovery. His mother began to reject him and even attack him because he also had crooked legs and three inguinal hernias. His legs have gotten better, and the hernias look correctable with surgery. But a new nurse mare would likely reject him the same as he is a weaker and less normal foal than most.. that’s why we chose Hanna who had a red bag foal earlier this year. That foal Lightning McQueen was also a weak dummy and had a very poor prognosis. Now McQueen is a big boy, no longer really nursing and has discovered his testosterone. He was naturally weaned among a group of colts and doing great (although we did allow him Hannah a transition period which we filmed and you’ll see soon) so Hanna was available for Lt Dan as a nurse mare. He needed more than luck. He needed the right kind of miracle.

Finding a nurse mare for him wasn't simple. The caption explains that another mare might reject him, too, because he was weaker than a typical foal and not thriving the way most mares expect a baby to. Horses can be incredible mothers, but taking in a foal who isn't theirs isn't a guarantee.

Then came Hanna.

Hanna had her own painful story. Earlier in the year, she had a red bag foal named Lightning McQueen, who was also weak and had a poor prognosis. Now McQueen is bigger, doing well, and naturally moving into his next chapter. That meant Hanna was available, but no one could know for sure how she would respond.

The video shows their first meeting, and it's impossible not to cry.

Lt Dan is tiny and vulnerable. Hanna is gentle in that quiet, steady way that makes you feel like some animals understand things far beyond what we can explain. The video caption says she took him in as her own immediately, without drugs to induce hormones, and treated him like he had always belonged to her.

That's the part that breaks me.

Hanna didn’t look at him like he was too sick, too different, or too much work. She looked at him like he was a baby who needed a mother.

The post explains that Hanna has been seen allowing other mares’ foals to nurse from her while she was raising her own colt, which is described as rare. Hanna seems to have an open heart and a full understanding of the assignment.

For a little while, she was a single mom raising two, and apparently, she has no complaints.

People in the comments were just as moved. One person described the whole thing as painfully beautiful to witness, and another shared the kind of line that stays with you: Some babies are born beneath your heart, and others find their way into it.

Why Some Mares Reject Their Foals

A mare rejecting her foal can be heartbreaking to witness, but it doesn’t always mean she’s “bad” or uncaring. Sometimes a foal is too weak to stand or nurse normally, or the mare is stressed, painful, confused, inexperienced, or sensing that something is seriously wrong.

The UC Davis Center for Equine Health explains that neonatal maladjustment syndrome can affect a newborn foal’s ability to stand, nurse, and behave normally, which is why quick veterinary care matters so much.

If a mare is rejecting, pushing away, or attacking her foal, the safest steps are urgent and careful:

• Call a veterinarian right away. Weak foals can decline quickly, and both the mare and the baby may need help.
• Protect the foal from injury. If the mare is aggressive, separation may be necessary until professionals can assess them.

Lt Dan’s story is heartbreaking, but Hanna’s response shows what a second chance can look like when the right mare says yes.

It's always amazing to watch a time-lapse video of a dog growing from a small puppy into a handsome or beautiful full-grown dog.

Why Do Some Golden Retrievers' Noses Turn Pink?

That question is, of course, why does a Golden Retriever's nose get pink over time?

It's actually very normal for a dog's nose to turn a different color.

When a dog is born with a dark-colored nose that becomes lighter over time or develops a pinkish hue, this is a condition known as snow nose.

It often happens to pups who spend a lot of time in cold weather, but it can actually occur during any season and in various climates, according to Chewy.com.

And no, snow nose doesn't affect only Golden Retrievers. Other breeds with this cute and usually harmless condition include Labrador Retrievers, Siberian Huskies, and Bernese Mountain Dogs.

As we said, for the most part, snow nose in dogs doesn't indicate anything is wrong with their health (it just gives you something fun to talk about!).

However, you should consult your vet if the dog's nose changing color is also accompanied by open sores, cracking, crusting, bleeding, a bumpy texture, swelling, masses, or any other abnormalities.

If the dog is itching a lot or seems to be in discomfort, also consult your vet, as the symptoms can be signs of an infection, an autoimmune disease, vitiligo, or cancer, according to Chewy.com.

If a nose suddenly turns pink, it could also be a sign of trauma or injury.

Conversely, if a pup is born with a pink or light-colored nose, it's referred to as a Dudley nose.

Dudley nose is usually seen with Yellow Labradors, Chocolate Labradors, Irish Setters, and Pointer dogs.

A dog resting in the sun with steam coming off his feet feels less like a normal backyard moment and more like evidence that he broke the land-speed record near the laundry line.

But Zorbie’s human had to add a little science lesson, because some viewers were understandably alarmed. It's winter in Australia, just 2 degrees in the morning, and Zorbie had spent about 5 minutes blasting around on wet grass while his human hung out clothes.

Then he retired to his outside bed, as a gentleman athlete does.

Once the sun hit his wet paws, the water started to evaporate, creating that smoky, steamy effect. No burning. No mirror beam. No mysterious backyard portal. Just wet feet, cold air, sunshine, and a Whippet who apparently gave the grass everything he had.

The best part is how calm Zorbie looks during the whole thing. He’s not worried. He’s not bothered. He’s simply lying there on his bed, letting his paws release the evidence of his athletic choices.

His human also notes that he only stays outside in the sun for a short while before heading back inside to one of his four warm beds, which may be the most Whippet detail possible. He has 5 minutes of chaos, 10 minutes of sunbathing, and then back to luxury.

One comment made the whole scene even funnier by joking that the toe beans appeared to have chosen a new pope, and once you read that, the little white puffs of steam become impossible to see any other way. Tiny paw conclave. Historic morning.

In a new viral video, a massive alligator on a golf course stops players dead in their tracks, as this reptile looks like a prehistoric dinosaur; it's so big!

The alligator is just casually sauntering across the golf course, minding its own business, but it is quite a sight to see!

The theme from Jurassic Park playing in the video really adds to the drama.

Why Do Alligators Look Like Living Dinosaurs?

This alligator, with its remarkable size, really did look like a dinosaur, so we have to ask, are these reptiles descendants of dinosaurs?

The answer is complex, but the answer is also no.

Alligators, as well as crocodiles, share an ancestor with dinosaurs called the archosaur that lived about 250 million years ago. However, then that lineage split into two, with one leading to dinosaurs and then their bird descendants, and the other, crocadilians, leading to crocodiles and alligators as we know them today.

So though they didn't technically evolve from dinosaurs, alligators do share some innate traits with them, which is why they sometimes resemble those prehistoric creatures.

After all, alligators have armored skin, powerful jaws, and muscular tails like dinosaurs.

They can also be quite sizeable. An American male alligator can grow to over 13 feet long and weigh hundreds of pounds.

Alligators have also been around for at least 150 million years! That's pretty darn old!

Why Are Alligators Often Seen on Golf Courses?

As for why alligators are often spotted on golf courses, it's quite an oasis for them.

Many courses are built near wetlands where these gators often live, like ponds and lakes.

With golf courses providing food (such as fish, turtles, and birds), water, and shade, why wouldn't they hang out there?

And this alligator clearly didn't mind running into a few golfers!

My dogs have definitely bonded over the years. When we first brought my Pug mix home, my senior Dachshund wasn't thrilled about having a fur baby brother. He followed her around everywhere (and still does), always trying to play and snuggle. Though my Doxie played it cool at first, she eventually let her guard down and the two became besties. Now they do everything together — walk, eat, roughhouse, and even scold each other when necessary. I love how they're truly a team.

Cocoa and Toast are Pit Bull mix sisters who are also obviously close companions and even help each other with daily hygiene.

In the Instagram video from @thechonkettes, Toast was lying on her back, almost like she was on a massage table, as her sister Cocoa continually licked her head. It was like a makeshift shampoo session.

"How to Properly Wash a Potato," the caption read. "Cocoa usually focuses on her humans, but her maternal side came out here when she treated Miss Toast to an impromptu spa service."

Toast was quite happy to be pampered by her Pittie sister, and at one point gave some added direction with her paws as if to say, "you missed that spot". Cocoa was thorough in covering the fur on Toast's head, possibly hoping to create a new 'do.

The canine cuties were probably going to watch a movie after Toast's glam sesh for a complete girls' night. Followers were moved by the beautiful sisterly bond.

"Oh bless them... Too precious," one remarked.

"The little paw swipe at the face," another pointed out.

"Miss Toast is trying to wave you off so you don’t distract Cocoa, thus ending the euphoria," another noted.

Pit Bulls Are Extremely Loving

Pit Bulls have earned a negative reputation due to the abuse and exploitation they endured in dog fighting. These canines are actually very sweet, loyal, and loving dogs that make wonderful companions.

Since Pit Bulls are large and muscular, their strength needs to be managed with obedience training. They need consistent exercise to expend their high energy level as well as mental stimulation to prevent anxiety and boredom.

Cocoa's gentle affection toward her sister as Toast relaxed in total trust beautifully illustrates the tender hearts of these wonderful canines.

Cockatoos love to try to turn anything and everything into toys. There's nothing a Cockatoo loves more than messing around, especially if they're messing around with things that have absolutely nothing to do with them.

If there's one Cockatoo who knows how to make do with the toys he has, it's Cumulus. This bird knows what he wants, and to him, every single thing is treasure. When he found it, he couldn't help but get to dancing:

Cumulus lives at Fix Chix Rescue, which is where he was surrendered to a while ago. He lives at the rescue most of the time, where he gets to hang out with everyone, including clients when they come in. He does get to go home with staff members on occasion.

In this video, Cumulus's treasure is a hair tie. He stole it from one of the ladies who works there, and they will absolutely not be getting it back. He saw it and immediately started dancing, as one does when they find treasure.
