The 2026 FIFA World Cup brought international teams, millions of fans, and one very specific problem to Toronto: Canada geese. The practice pitch at Centennial Park in Etobicoke, a multimillion-dollar facility that Canada built specifically for the tournament, has been invaded daily by birds uninterested in soccer.

All they want is to graze the grass and leave behind evidence of their visit. The city of Toronto sought help and found it in two border collies, Sally and her colleague Ben.

Sally and Ben work for Border Control Bird Dogs, a company from Stirling, Ontario. Gareth Williams, the owner of the company, explained how the dogs help keep geese away.

The dogs crouch down and stalk the geese. Border collies' herding instinct to herd sheep and move livestock helps.

As Williams told CTV News Toronto, "Geese then start thinking the border collies are predators in that area, and it encourages them to leave."

The pitch stays clean. No bird bangers and no environmental impact.

Sally and Ben's Daily Routine

Sally and Ben go to the pitch twice a day, every day, for about 30 minutes per session. Williams adjusts the schedule based on geese activity, which he suspects is concentrated around a river running behind the pitch, where the birds have likely nested.

Ben is the more enthusiastic of the two. Williams told Global News that he waits at Williams' car from first light. As the company's owner says, Ben can work all day, and the moment he comes back home, he wants to do it again.

Border Collies Were Born for This Job

Bred with the perfect combination of prey drive and restraint, border coolies have herded sheep for centuries.

They can move aggressively toward an animal, yet control how close they get and stop on command. They do it all while holding their instinctive posture that, to birds, looks like a predator.

Dogs with higher prey drive may chase and scatter the birds. Dogs with too little prey drive will get ignored. Border collies fit squarely in the middle ground, where they look like a threat to birds and can respond quickly to a command.

Dogs Keep Finding Their Way Into the World Cup

Sally and Ben are at the field long before the players arrive. They have been working and preparing the venues for players to perform at the highest level.

Some dogs find their role at the World Cup, like Sally and Ben. Others find it by showing off their skills as actual players.

Some animals become mascots for the fans. But with the FIFA World Cup in full effect, everybody wants a slice of it. Sally and Ben are making sure the playing fields remain ready for the biggest soccer tournament.

Wally the golden retriever has big feelings about a lot of things. Most of them are very complicated. But at Grandma's there is only one feeling and it is very simple and very large.

I am a mom to both two small human children and a dog, and I can say with great confidence that their attention needs are all very similar. Despite the fact that everyone's hanging out on the deck on what looks like a beautiful day, the situation is less than ideal for Spencer.

Someone brought their new puppy over to his house while his grandpa was there, which means Grandpa is all about snuggling the adorable little one. And even though he's still sitting right next to Spencer, he can't even look Grandpa in the eye, that's how jealous he is.

Poor Spencer has his head buried in the side of the couch and refuses to come out, even after Grandpa puts his hand on the dog's back to remind him he's still loved. Oh, this sweet baby!

In the TikTok from @kingtheo_princessrosie, the majestic Pit Bull sat outside on a breezy day and let the wind blow through his surprisingly long hair. Theo boasted a makeshift mane that is almost never seen on a Pittie. The hair on his face was short, in total contrast to his rocker hair.

Theo's full coat also consisted of luscious locks, with layers of shaggy, golden fur making for a lion-like presence. The spiky wisps on top of Theo's head made him look like he was ready to audition for Def Leppard or Bon Jovi.

Theo and his Pittie sister Rosie both have the FGF5 gene mutation that causes his curious coif. The FGF5 gene controls coat length, where a mutation of this coding inherited from both parents results in long hair.

This rare mutation can be carried by any breed. Short-coated breeds like Pointers, French Bulldogs and Boxers will also have flowing fur if they have the altered gene.

I have always loved German Shepherds. My sister rescues them, so I've been lucky enough to meet quite a few over the years, and they never fail to amaze me. They're incredibly smart, unbelievably affectionate and somehow manage to be both giant protectors and oversized babies at the exact same time.

Which is why this adorable German Shepherd puppy absolutely melted my heart. She's happily chewing on her big sister's face like it's the greatest chew toy ever invented, while her older sister couldn't seem less bothered by the whole situation. The world is such a magical place. One day you're enjoying a hot summer afternoon swimming in a Kentucky lake with your adorable terrier. A chimera dog is an extremely rare animal that has two different sets of DNA in its body. This can sometimes create unusual markings or striking eye colors.

However, not every dog with different colored eyes is a chimera. Many dogs simply have heterochromia, a harmless genetic trait that causes the eyes to be different colors.

Breeds like Border Collies, Huskies, Australian Shepherds and mixed breeds can all naturally have heterochromia.

Either way, dogs with unusual eye colors tend to stop people in their tracks.

With Jackass: Best and Last set to hit theaters on June 26, Steve-O is back doing what fans know him best for: outrageous stunts, fearless pranks and plenty of laughs. The entertainer, whose real name is Stephen Gilchrist Glover, became a household name alongside Johnny Knoxville as one of the breakout stars of MTV's Jackass franchise. However, most people don't know that the funny frontman is also a huge animal lover with a special place in his heart for rescuing animals.

Behind the wild antics is a man deeply committed to animal welfare. In fact, Steve-O was so passionate about helping animals that he moved out of California to the midwest and built Radical Ranch, a nonprofit sanctuary dedicated to providing a safe haven for rescued animals in need.

Steve-O recently spoke with Parade Pets about his journey into animal activism, the inspiration behind Radical Ranch and his vision for the sanctuary's future. See what he revealed about his passion project, below.

From Circus Performer to Animal Advocate 

Steve-O's passion for animals didn't begin with the nonprofit he runs today—or even with the pets he had growing up. Instead, he traces the roots of his activism back to an unlikely place: clown college.

While attending the now-closed Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Clown College, Steve-O remembers a media-training session that left a lasting impression. Representatives from the circus instructed students on how to handle questions from reporters, particularly when it came to the treatment of animals.

"They said some of you will be working for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus—the greatest show on earth—and your job will entail going to the city that the circus is going to be in advance," Steve-O recalls. "You'll be doing interviews to promote the circus... sometimes you're going to be asked about animals. If that happens, you say nothing. You know you have no opinion. You shut up and fall down. You're a clown. I remember it feeling aggressive."

Later, while working for another circus that traveled with elephants and a tiger, Steve-O became increasingly troubled by what he witnessed. Stories of stressed animals and cramped living conditions changed the way he viewed the industry.

"The whole animals-in-the-circus thing bothered me a lot," he says.

His outspoken criticism of circus animal practices eventually caught the attention of PETA after he discussed the issue during a 2006 appearance on Tom Green's House Tonight. The organization soon invited him to participate in a public service campaign opposing the use of animals in circuses. Steve-O later joined PETA's well-known "I'd Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur" campaign and gradually changed his own lifestyle, first eliminating most meat from his diet before eventually embracing veganism during his recovery journey.

Looking back, Steve-O tells us he sees those early experiences as the beginning of a lifelong commitment to speaking up for animals—a mission that would ultimately lead him to create Radical Ranch.

If you've never heard of Radical Ranch, it's a nonprofit animal sanctuary that Steve-O launched in 2024. He says the goal is to inspire compassion for animals and help people everywhere—including his Jackass fans—see just how intelligent and loving these creatures can be.

"I wanted it to be positive," Steve-O shares. "I thought I could buy a big property and turn it into an animal sanctuary that could ultimately get to a place where we can facilitate encounters with animals—where someone could look into the eye of an animal and see that it has emotions, intelligence, feelings—we could cultivate and spread compassion far and wide."

To Steve-O, the spirit of Radical Ranch is rooted in kindness and connection. "It's about just being kind to animals and seeking to cultivate compassion for animals through compassion for people as well," he explains.

Where is Radical Ranch located? 

Radical Ranch spans 44 acres in Tennessee. For Steve-O, the move was intentional and shaped by both practical concerns and a growing desire to build something focused on animal rescue outside of Los Angeles.

He was living in the Hollywood Hills in the early 2020s when he began hearing that some homeowners were struggling to renew insurance policies due to wildfire risk. Around the same time, a trip to Nashville for a UFC event gave him an unexpected opportunity to explore a new possibility.

"I said, 'We'll go I for the fights, and we'll use four days while we're there to look at properties,'" Steve-O tells us. "We looked at properties for three days, and nothing was a hit. Then, the real estate agent said he had one random property that was the total opposite—nowhere near like anything else we looked at."

Steve-O says he was impressed from the jump. He says what stood out to him wasn't just the house, it was everything around it.

"The house was cool, but then they drove me through the woods around the property," Steve-O recalls. "There's a one-mile-long trail that goes in a loop around the property, and it's so awesome. It's a rad trail. By the time we were done driving around the trail, I was like, 'I have to have this! The potential for rescuing animals is off the charts."

From there, his dream of rescuing animals and giving them a better life became a reality.

What Animals Has Steve-O Rescued so Far? 

Today, Steve-O tells us Radical Ranch is home to nine animals, but he's hoping to continue to add more over time. "Right now we have a mix of dogs, cats, pigs and goats," he notes.

And as you might expect, they have some fun names, too. A couple of which he really loves. "We have a cat named Winifred Winfrey and Fonzarelli the pig," he reveals while opening up about how he helped some of the animals get out of bad situations.

"My team and I rescued Fonzarelli from a man with terminal cancer and we rescued some of the goats from another sanctuary that had taken them in after their owner, a petting zoo operator, had substance use issues," he reveals.

The Jackass: Best and Last star tells us he'd like to eventially have other types of animals there one day as well. "I'd love to rescue some cows," he smiles.

Can You Visit Radical Ranch? 

Currently, Radical Ranch is not open to the public, but Steve-O tells us he hopes that's something he can make happen in the future. "I imagine, at one point, we will be," Steve-O says. "But I also live here, so it's a private residence."

Because of that, Steve-O is trying to figure out how to make all of that work out.

Still, he knows letting the public on the ranch could boost fundraising, so he's keeping an open mind. In the meantime, people can meet the rescues on his ranch's website where their pictures are shared as well as info about each one, personality traits and fun facts.

How Can You Support Steve-O's Resuced Animals?

If you're a fan of Steve-O and an animal lover as well, he says fans can still help support the animals on his ranch. In fact, when people donate money to the ranch, in exchange, Steve-O says he offers to give them the tattoo in exchange. He notes that actually started when people began asking him to ink them up, even though he is not a tattoo artist, so he received some coaching from a friend who is one.

"I would feel weird if I charged anybody for a tattoo, so I never did," Steve-O said. "Then I thought, 'There's a crazy demand...what if I offer to give people tattoos to raise money for charity?"

"It's for my nonprofit, so there's no set price," Steve-O states. "I don't want it to be a barrier for entry. If somebody submits a design that I think is funny or awesome, and I like the creativity, and it works within my ability, I won't be super concerned about how much the donation is. If the donation is super worth it, I'll do whatever you want. It's proven to be a good way to fundraise and help the animals there."

How to Groom a Maine Coon

There are so many things to consider when thinking about adding a Maine Coon to your life, but one of the biggest aspects people sometimes forget is maintaining a Maine Coon's fur and coat.

Maine Coons are known for their long, luxurious coats, which require frequent brushing and maintenance to keep your cat pretty and happy. Starting grooming early is key, getting kittens used to the idea of being brushed. Are Golden Retrievers Lazy as Puppies?

While puppies do require a fair amount of sleep for developmental purposes, Golden Retrievers are decidedly not dogs for someone looking for a couch potato.

Because they were bred to be working dogs, Goldens are often extremely high energy, need a lot of play, and require above average mental stimulation as compared to other dogs. Goldens can often require one to two hours of play to be satiated, which is definitely something to consider when thinking about adding a new puppy to the family.

"Laziness" for Golden, often comes later in life, well after the puppy stage. Teenaged and adult Golden Retrievers start to mellow out, relax, find their calm, and become more likely to be "lazy" but still fully retain their ability to play.

All to say, it's definitely worth doing your research to decide whether or not a Golden Retriever would be a good addition to your family. And if you decide it's a yes, prepare for at least a few weeks of pudgy bounciness!

If you’ve ever spent time around a Belgian Malinois, you already know they’re equal parts brilliant and goofy. While the breed is famous for athleticism, bravery, and loyalty, these dogs also have a knack for making people laugh.

Pestilence, a young Mali, recently proved both points during a swimming session. The clever pup had apparently figured out that his harness could help him get out of the water. The only problem? He hadn’t quite worked out that Mom was the one making it happen.

Belgian Malinois Are Among the Smartest Working Dog Breeds

Belgian Malinois are widely regarded as one of the most intelligent dog breeds, prized for their problem-solving skills and used by police and military units around the world, including Navy SEAL teams, according to the American Kennel Club. Their lighter build also makes them easier to skydive with than heavier breeds like German Shepherds, and some Malinois are even trained to jump solo, which makes landing in water safer for them. As funny as the video is, Pestilence is no slouch. The athletic pup is training to become a future dock diving champion, and judging by his June 18 Instagram video, he’s well on his way.

A Rare Hummingbird Encounter Caught on Camera

In a 24-second video shared to Reddit titled "She'll never forget this moment," a little girl sits cross-legged in a backyard patio chair with a tiny hummingbird feeder resting on her right knee. As the video starts, she remains like a statue, intently focused as a hummingbird flutters just above the feeder.

While the hummingbird dips its beak into the feeder, the camera zooms in on the action, capturing both the bird and the girl's priceless reaction in frame. For a brief second, the bird darts away, and the girl's eyes immediately follow it, before returning for more nectar, prompting her to crack a smile.

Niall Harbison keeps his many MANY social media followers updated on the street dogs he saves through his Thailand animal rescue, Happy Doggo. He recently posted the story of a sweet yet very scared dog abandoned by his family, who miraculously was able to show a gentle willingness to trust.

The Instagram video from @wearehappydoggo shared the sweet pup's story with clips of his rescue.

"Imagine being abandoned by the only family you ever knew," the on-screen text read, as the tiny white dog fearfully looked into the camera. "Left to fend for yourself in the shadows."

A Happy Doggo team member gently offered the precious pooch some food and a helping hand. The tiny canine must have realized he could trust his rescuer and showed a sign of hope.

"Only to smile the moment you realize you are finally safe," the story continued as the canine cutie had a look of joy on his face, with the caption adding, "The second he realized we were there to help him, he gave us the most beautiful smile."

The little dog was immediately taken to the Happy Doggo medical clinic for care. He showed signs of physical injuries and malnourishment that needed immediate treatment.

Happy Doggo Has a New Resident

The medical team uncovered several issues that had to be addressed and started the pup on his healing journey.

"He was terrified, confused, and suffering," the caption explained. "A checkup revealed he is dealing with a severe abscess on his side, anemia, heartworm. He has a long road ahead of him."

As always, Harbison and his team are completely committed to helping this canine cutie heal. Now safe at Happy Doggo, the fur baby is getting the love and care he deserves for however long it takes.

"We might not know where he came from, but we know exactly where he’s going — he is safe, he is loved, and he has a very bright future ahead of him," the caption shared, concluding with, "Welcome to the rest of your life, little one."

While stray cats are kitties who live outside but likely belonged to a family before (or still do), feral cats are completely different.

They are born in the wild and tend to be more stand-offish and distrusting of humans, so getting one to come close to you is quite a feat, let alone allowing you the honor of giving them pets.

Of course, the foster mom who shared her journey with Beatrice on TikTok, Phoenix Ferals, is a caregiver for a colony of feral cats, so she knows exactly what she's doing. But still, it's really magical to see this cat learn to trust her now that she knows she's safe.

How to Earn a Feral Cat's Trust

Most (if not all) feral cats start out very suspicious of humans — and why wouldn't they be? There's a good chance they've had negative experiences with them in the past, and people can be a bit scary.

But it can be possible to earn their trust if you're willing to put the time and effort in, and that all starts with keeping your safety first. As Rover points out, feral cats may be aggressive and could even scratch or bite you, causing a rabies infection, so proceed with caution if you meet one outdoors.

When it seems safe to approach, do so slowly. Rover recommends trying the following to win them over:

• Speak quietly and slowly
• Offer to let them sniff you before you get too close
• Bring treats, and offer positive reinforcement when they interact with you
• Respect them when they're showing signals that they want you to back off

And keep in mind that no matter how sweet and patient you are, some feral cats may never come around, and that's not your fault!

A dog's bathtime schedule varies from dog to dog, and a lot of it comes down to some important factors.

"Bathing frequency isn't a one-size-fits-all; it depends on your individual dog's coat structure, activity level and overall skin health," says Ashley Beltz, a national certified master groomer at PetSmart. "Dogs with hair like poodles and doodles have coats that continuously grow, so they typically need bathing every 3-4 weeks to prevent matting. Dogs with shorter, smooth fur coats, like boxers or beagles, can be bathed every 6-8 weeks. "Preventing fleas and ticks is important since these pests can spread illnesses like Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever to both pets and people," Beltz says. "It's also a collaborative process between groomers and pet parents."

Beltz adds that during peak flea and tick season, you should consider adding more frequent baths—typically every 2 to 3 weeks—to your pet's routine, in addition to their respective treatments. As a bonus, more frequent baths give groomers the opportunity to examine your dog's skin for any signs of fleas or ticks before things escalate.

"Waiting too long between baths can lead to oil buildup, trapped dirt, skin irritation and unpleasant odors," Boyack says. "Regular grooming also allows professionals to identify potential skin or coat concerns before they become larger issues."

“Between regular baths, dry shampoos, waterless bath products and cleansing wipes are convenient alternatives for quick freshness, while regular brushing removes dead hair and dander that contribute to odor,” Boyack says. “That said, these products work best in addition to regular grooming, not [as] a replacement. They're excellent maintenance tools, but a proper bath and grooming routine is essential for long-term coat health and overall wellness.”
