As a parent to humans and pets, it's been quite a ride watching all the ways each of them has transformed over the years and come into their own. My human kids have sprouted to heights taller than me, while my dogs' muzzles have started to turn gray. Of my felines, it's my Ragdoll kitty who's had the biggest "before" and "after," but mostly because of the level of fluff he's accrued!

British Longhair cat, Blueberry, falls into the same furry category, but with her tail! It's perfectly plush, fluffy, "floofy," and every other similar descriptor you can think of!

Little miss feather duster 🪶

The difference between 2 months and 1 year old is incredible. Blueberry was already a gorgeous kitten with a good amount of snow-white fur. But the older she's grown, the more of it goes straight to that feather duster-looking tail (Swiffer, eat your heart out)!

Her glow-up left an impression on some of her and kitty sister Biscuit's nearly 34k TikTok followers, with some calling her iconic, regal, majestic, and even groundbreaking. I have to say, she's so much more than her tail, but I do bow down to the "glorious plumage!"

As a certified earth angel, Blueberry has always had the gift of beauty on her side. When she was a wee little babe, her mere presence was enough to send us all into full swoon mode.

All kittens are perfect, but this girl's spellbinding sapphire eyes and teeny-tiny ears matched with her compact frame put her over the top!

Blueberry is a good example of how poofy this breed can get. A British Longhair cat's luxurious, soft, "exceptionally fluffy" fur is actually a plush, dense, long overcoat with an even thicker undercoat. With the added mane around their necks and their "ruff" tails, these kitties are often compared to teddy bears or stuffed animals.

With all of these gorgeous fur features, cats like Blueberry require a higher level of maintenance, like regular grooming, to prevent matting. For the dedicated cat parent, it's a small price to pay for something so glorious!

There is just something about a grandma doing your hair that hits differently. It is gentle. It is slightly judgmental. And somehow, you always end up looking like you are about to attend a very important event.

The sweet and hilarious video from @monte_madness shows a very patient Golden Retriever sitting with his grandma while she carefully combs his fur into a perfect little side part.

And not just any side part.

This is a full “you are going to church, and you will behave,” side part.

As she softly combs his hair, she starts talking to him in that classic grandma whisper voice, and then casually delivers some unexpected shade.

“You know Grandma misses you living here. I don’t get to do your hair all the time anymore… and I know mama doesn’t do your hair. She doesn’t realize you like to be handsome everywhere you go.”

The dog, meanwhile, is absolutely loving it. Just sitting there soaking up the attention like a tiny, very fluffy gentleman who knows he looks good.

Some dogs can do amazing tricks. Their capacity to learn through training and repetition enables them to accomplish some mind-boggling feats. Franklin the Mini Dachshund is a wonderful example of a canine's ability to master challenging moves. In the TikTok from @franklin.the.sausage.dog, the darling Doxie stared into the camera as he mentally prepared to perform his "new trick". His mom called out, "Sausage roll!" and he sprang into action.

As he lay on a blanket on the floor, Franklin grabbed a corner of the blanket in his mouth, pulled it over himself as he did a 360-degree roll on his back, then up again on his stomach.

The clever canine perfectly executed a sort of swaddle with the blanket, or in his case, a "sausage roll". After completing the feat, Franklin looked into the camera as if to say, "TA-DA!"

Followers raved over Franklin's skill and precision with the trick, with many asking how he learned such a complicated move.

"What a cutie patootie!" one gushed.

"This made me smile so much," another shared.

"What a smart little one!!!" a fan praised.

"So clever — Would love to know how you did this," someone requested.

Step-By-Step Instructions for the 'Sausage Roll'

In a follow-up post, Franklin's mom shared in the onscreen text how she trained her canine cutie to complete the eye-catching trick as the Doxie demonstrated each step:

• Step 1: Make sure they can roll over. If they struggle, guide them round with a treat, and say 'roll over' command.
• Step 2: Practice holding the blanket. We use commands 'take' and 'wait', then 'drop it'. You can hold their mouth closed gently at first so they know what you want them to do.
• Step 3: Practice picking up the blanket — used the command 'take' and tapped on the corner.
• Step 4: Combine 'take' and 'roll over'. When they do this, introduce the command you want to use (we use 'sausage roll').
• Step 5: Practice, practice, practice!

Franklin's mom pointed out that she leaves the blanket folded at the side so it's easier for the precious pooch to pick it up.

"Side note: Make sure they are aligned on the blanket and lying down or you might get this," she added as Franklin got a little confused during one attempt and ended up lying down on the blanket in a heap.

If Dachshunds catch on and give this a try, Franklin may have started a 'sausage roll' trend!

Few things take a cat's attention more immediately than the sudden appearance of a red dot or a red-colored, mouse-shaped light. One second, the cat is sleeping, calm as could be, and the next, she's darting, pouncing, and locked right in on this mystery new intruder of her space. TikTok user @nala_abujackson shared a video of a very cute gray Scottish Fold cat named Nala. She's got the typical features of the Scottish Fold, with delicately folded-over ear tips, super-round head and cheeks, and high-set, round-shaped eyes that are easy to fall in love with.

And in this clip, she's being a typical feline who's found a toy that, for whatever reason, seems to be a top favorite among most cats, even if we don't understand it ourselves.

Nala is being a funny cat, as her parents joke in the clip's caption, as she quickly scurries across the tiled floor in her home. She is going back and forth, side to side, speeding up and slowing down, trying to catch a mysterious red mouse-shaped light that's appearing off and then on the floor. It shoots across the tile, then the carpet, then disappears, and she doesn't let it out of her sight for a second.

The comments on the video were filled with very appropriate emojis of red hearts and red heart-eyed smiles.

Scottish Fold Cats Are Known for Their Ears and Personality

Scottish Fold cats are so adorable, even when they're just being typical kitties and running around chasing a dot. And that's pretty expected of these silly felines, who are known for their ears and personalities.

Hill's Pet explains that Scottish Folds are medium-sized cats with very round faces, and it's their ears that create that illusion. They explain that since their heads are round and their ear tips are folded down, they look like they're ball-shaped, which of course, is super cute. 

But in addition to their cute and unique features, these kitties, who are known to live around 9 to 12 years, are very charming, easy to live with (because they're so cute), caring, and affectionate. They're pretty good with all family members of any age, as long as they're handled gently and not approached too roughly. 

As you can see in this clip of the silly cat chasing the laser light, they love to have fun and can move pretty fast—that's just the best part of being a cat parent.

One of life's greatest gifts is stumbling upon a dog who won the Pixar gene lottery. You know the type of pup I'm referring to: They are born with adorably cartoonish features that cannot be real, and they're 100% inspiration for films like The Lorax without even trying. It's really not fair how cool and cute and cuddly these canines are, but we thank them for blessing our eyes.

Fritz is one of these impossibly precious pups, but even by Miniature Schnauzer standards, he exceeds every expectation. This is exactly what he counts on when Mom catches him doing something he shouldn't!

As you can see, Fritz isn't like other Miniature Schnauzers. He's like the upgraded version, the 2.0 update with all the bells and whistles! It doesn't matter if he's discovered the toilet paper and intends to destroy the house with it because he's way too cute to get into any trouble.

Having no shame and owning the fact that he, indeed, shouldn't have taken the toilet paper only adds to Fritz's appeal. It's hard work being the main character in Mom's life, so it's understandable if he needed to take the edge off.

If you're not fully convinced that Fritz should have a cartoon movie made in his likeness, take a look at how photogenic he is. Even for dental pictures, this little guy is a pro at stealing hearts and taking names.

Privacy? Home as a sanctuary? Luna the Tuxedo Cat takes these things very seriously, and when that sanctity is violated, she is not happy. More importantly, she is not afraid to let you know it.

In a TikTok featuring Luna, she walks into the room and discovers—to her absolute horror—that there's an unexpected guest in the house. She is absolutely not here for it. The caption reads, "She's pissed 🤣," which honestly looks more like she’s part terrified and part horrified.

Luna's reaction is priceless. She looks at the visitor. Then she looks at her human with the most disgusted, disappointed expression a cat can manage. 

Commenters immediately had thoughts on Luna's energy.

"The way she looks at you then looks at him says it all," one eagle-eyed fan captured Luna’s double take of judgment.

"Clearly you did not ask permission first🤣," because Luna definitely has a visitor approval process that was not followed.

Luna's just standing there staring, radiating pure disgust. The unbothered guest gets a death stare. Meanwhile, mom gets the, "I'm very disappointed in your choices," look. Luna does not care. Nobody's getting her approval here today.

Some Cats Are Just Naturally Suspicious Of New People and Need Time to Adjust

Here's the one thing about Luna's reaction to visitors: not all cats have the same personalities when it comes to new people in their environment. Some appoint themselves official greeter the moment anyone walks through the door. Others, just like Luna, would much rather prefer that no one ever visited their house again. Ever.

A cat who hides, hisses, or in Luna's case, delivers looks of judgment and disgust isn't broken. They're just on the more cautious end of the spectrum when it comes to new people.

Cats who aren’t comfortable with visitors in the house need things done differently than most. Moving too quickly, reaching out to pet right away, making direct eye contact—all of those feel threatening to a nervous or territorial cat even when the intention's completely friendly.

For cats like Luna who seriously don’t want strangers in their personal space, the best approach is let them set the pace. No pressure, no agenda. Just a human and a cat existing in the same space without anything scary happening to either of them.

Comfort is possible but it takes patience and respecting the cat's timeline.

Luna's being straight up from the moment she spots him. This visitor? Not approved. The situation? Absolutely unacceptable. Mom's good judgment? Definitely questionable.Big opinions. Zero apologies. That's Ms.Luna.

Some dogs move through life a little slower than others. For many, this happens as they age; they just can't go as quickly as they used to. For others, though, they have always taken life a little slower. It just depends on the dog.

For the right reasons, even a slow pup might put a little pep in his step. A prime example of that is this precious Alaskan Malamute, who was on a walk when his mom mentioned going home for a treat. The speed boost wasn't much, but it definitely was there:

Duke and Teddy are two dogs who have wildly different ways of life. Teddy, a Goldendoodle, moves quickly and loves to cause chaos. Duke, the Malamute, is a little less eager to get where he's going. Coupled with the fact that he's a lot heavier, he's a bit slower.

When his mom mentions the treat, he has about a 5% increase in speed overall, though about a 95% increase in excitement. He can't wait to get home to his treat, but he knows it'll taste just as good if he trots on home at his own pace.

His little ears get a little floppier as he starts waddling home, too. He's so cute! He knows he always gets a treat after his walk, especially when he's a good boy who doesn't drag mom along on the leash.

Alaskan Malamutes Are Huge Dogs

Duke's mom is very, very lucky that he doesn't want to run, honestly. If he did, and many Malamutes do, she would probably end up with a serious case of road rash.

Although Malamutes aren't classified as a giant breed, they can weigh over 100 pounds. These dogs were also literally bred for pulling, so they're incredibly physically strong and even stronger-willed. If they see something they want, they're going after it, leash or not.

Training is vital for these dogs, especially when it comes to:

• Exposure to different things, like other dogs, people, and cats, to reduce reactivity.
• Proper leash behavior (no pulling, yanking, or dropping and becoming an un-draggable heap).
• General obedience, so you can keep control of them even in moments of uncertainty.

Clearly, Duke is perfect on a leash. No pulling; just a bit of happy trotting!

It's been a little while since we checked in on our favorite little foster Pit Bull puppy named Piglet, and boy, has he grown.

He is no longer an itty-bitty, little puppy!

Now he is a big puppy, but he's still so sweet, cute, and a little wild!

And apparently, he is now noticing the opposite sex!

In a new video from the account @we.three.pitties, we see our much larger Pit Bull puppy meeting an adorably cute gray Pit Bull puppy outside.

In the caption, Piglet's foster mom writes, "My itty-bitty foster Pittie went on his first date this weekend, and this is how it went."

Like most first dates, there was some sniffing each other's butts, followed by chasing each other around a tree, and then she appeared to ditch him, but she came back, and they were reunited and had a great time!

They continued to chase each other, though Piglet would not let his new female acquaintance touch his ball (he is still only a puppy).

Looks like his first date went well!

In the caption, his mom wrote, "I think she likes him."

He is no longer a baby Piglet, but is a Baked Potato!

But he is still up to his same puppy habits, including sleeping under a blanket with his toys and sitting on the heating vent to get all warm and toasty.

Piglet had a bit of a rough start in life, as he was found shivering and underweight and had to be taken care of immediately at a shelter.

But eventually, he was nursed back to health and has thrived in his foster home with his parents and dog brothers, and now he even has a girlfriend!

My two dogs have a typical sibling relationship. They bicker one minute, then snuggle the next. My senior Dachshund tolerates her little Pug brother's antics and puts him in his place when she needs to, like any big sister would. He follows her around and knows she's the boss, yet loves to push her buttons. They're basically inseparable even when they drive each other crazy, like human siblings.

These two Golden Retrievers seem to have a similar dynamic, where Duke got snitched on by his little sister Leona, who clearly enjoyed tattling to mom.

In the TikTok from @lifewithduke2025, Leona approached her mom with an expression on her face revealing she had some juicy intel on her big brother. Her mother knew immediately that Leona wanted to get Duke in trouble.

"She's up to something — she's a tattle tale," their mom said, then called over to the kitchen. "Dukie, what do you have, honey? Come here."

Duke must have used selective hearing because he didn't leave the kitchen. He probably knew his sister ratted him out on whatever he was doing. Finally, he emerged with a cookie sheet hanging out of his mouth.

"Duke!" his mom exclaimed. "He's got the cookie sheet! Oh my goodness, he's got the baking sheet."

The older Golden proudly brought the metal sheet over to his dog bed to snuggle with, and obviously had no intention of returning it to the kitchen any time soon.

Duke Is a Kitchen Item Collector

There was already a large metal bowl in Duke's dog bed when he added the cookie sheet. The canine obviously enjoys gathering kitchen items rather than toys and was working on a full collection. His mom wasn't thrilled about his latest addition, but let him have it for a few minutes.

"Oh, Dukie, what are you going to do with that?" she asked as the gorgeous Golden started licking the cookie sheet, answering her question. "He shouldn't be licking that, but I'm gonna get it."

Followers cracked up at Duke's penchant for pantry products and guessed at his plans.

"Well, he already has the mixing bowl, so yes... He's going to bake," one pointed out.

"Duke is going to make some cookies," another suggested.

"He's giving you a big hint with the mixing bowl and the cookie sheet. You can't have tea without biscuits," someone remarked.

Maybe Duke's next grab will be the blender!

Parrots are, unfortunately, some of the most commonly mistreated animals in the entire world. A lot of people just don't know what they're getting into, and the bird suffers as a result. They're also very commonly rehomed throughout their lives.

For one disabled Blue-and-Gold Macaw, landing in her forever home was the best thing that ever happened to her. Not only do they adore her and give her everything she needs, but she has an awesome new friend who helps her fly:

Alex and Larry are the best parents their pet parents could ask for. Look at how gentle their daughter is with the bird, too; clearly, they've done something right! The parrot's name is Scooter, and she's a happy, healthy Blue-and-Gold Macaw.

Scooter is about 10 years old, and she's relatively new to her forever home. They found her on Facebook when they were searching for a new cage for Polly, their Scarlet Macaw. Her first caretaker had her since she was a hatchling.

According to her, Scooter was born disfigured: though you can't really see it in that video, her legs are splayed out. She can't perch properly, and she can't walk, hence the name: Scooter.

You can see her legs better in this clip. Although her legs are splayed, she lives a very happy, full life, especially with her bestie/sister, Kambre!

Do Birds Need Their Legs to Fly?

Scooter seems to have no problem flapping her wings; it even looks like she might be fully flighted! However, as her mom shows in the videos, she can't fly unless someone, preferably Kam, is holding her.

As a mom of two orange boys, I can confirm there is just something different about them. They are always getting into things, always pushing boundaries, always doing the absolute most for no reason at all. Just pure chaos, gremlin energy wrapped in fur.

In the TikTok from @simonsits, Klee explained Marmie's odd reaction to the pile of toys that belongs to her fur baby brother, Simon.

"My new foster dog keeps growling and barking somewhere around Simon's toy bin," she shared as Marmie sat next to her on the couch. "I cannot figure out what she's upset by."

Klee suspected this reaction to everyday toys is due to Marmie's past trauma.

"It's so obvious that she has not experienced a lot of things in life because so many things to her are scary or weird," she remarked. "I'm gonna try to get to the bottom of this one."

Marmie stared at the basket of toys from the couch and let out some barks and growls, clearly set off by the collection. She moved down to the floor and continued her protest as Klee tried to figure out if there was one specific toy causing her stress.

There was one yellow duck plushie lying on its own, away from the other toys. Klee held it up to Marmie and immediately got a reaction. When Klee moved the duck toward Marmie, she backed up to keep her distance and even hid behind the coffee table.

And I have to say, their cat door is incredibly cool, which somehow makes the whole situation even funnier. This is not some random doorway standoff. This is premium cat-door real estate, and Haku clearly believes access control is his personal responsibility. You can practically hear him thinking, absolutely not, this is a private residence.

That doesn’t mean dogs can’t learn certain words and phrases over time. “There are dogs out there that have a very good understanding of what we say,” says Elisha Stynchula, CPDT-KA, certified dog trainer and owner of I Said Sit School for Dogs. For example, Chaser the Border Collie famously knew more than 1,000 words. However, she explains that's not the case for every dog, which is why you need to be more cautious with what you say when you're speaking to your pup. Because even though you may want to chat with your pooch the same way you do other humans and expect them to understand what you’re saying, they sadly won't. 

But by removing certain confusing words from your vocabulary while talking to your dog, you can make your bond better. This will help you both understand each other a little better and make your relationship stronger than ever. Dogs rely heavily on body language cues and consistent signals, so even common words or phrases can confuse them. By understanding which words confuse your dog and how to communicate clearly, you can strengthen trust and improve obedience. A dog trainer’s tips can help you avoid miscommunication and make sure your commands are always understood.

1. “Get off the couch.”

One phrase that can confuse you dog is telling them to get off the couch. You know what you mean when you say this, and other humans do as well. But this long string of words can be tricky for dogs to follow.

How to communicate better with your dog? Instead, Stynchula says it may be more helpful to use a word like “down” or “off,” provided you aren’t using those commands in other contexts, like encouraging your pup to lie down or leave something alone.

2. “Stop that.”

Can dogs understand the phrase "stop that"? Stynchula says your dog might get the message, but they also can end up confused as even simple words can be misunderstood by your pet. “I think the tone along with familiar words form a picture for the dog,” she says. ““What makes it hard for dogs is when people just nag or repeat commands, which can confuse them and make training less effective.”

3. “Come here right now.”

When it comes to phrases that confuse dogs, "come here right now" is one of them, according to our expert. Stynchula says this happens because it has a few confusing elements to it. For starters, it’s a lot of words. "’Come here right now’ just sounds like you are angry and I can only imagine it being said with such a harsh tone,” Stynchula says.

So, what advice does Stynchula have as a dog trainer? “A pet peeve of many dog trainers is using ‘come’ for anything unpleasant," she notes. "Pet parents should use ‘come’ alone and it should always be followed by praise and affection.” 

4. "Why did you do that?"

There are several words your dog might misunderstand and this counts as one. Why? Stynchula explains that this is a complex question that, unfortunately, your dog doesn’t inherently know how to answer. In this setting, your furry companion will likely look to your body language and tone for cues. But, really, don’t expect an appropriate response as they are most likely confused when you say this. 

5. Using “no” in multiple contexts.

Are dogs confused by owner’s commands? Sometimes. While dogs can get a sense of “no,” this word can be confusing for pets when you’re using it in multiple situations. “What does ‘no’ really mean? Stop digging, stop jumping, stop chewing, etc.?” Stynchula asks. “One word cannot mean multiple things. in your dog's mind.” Instead, she prefers pet parents ask ther dog to do something good so they can request a known behavior and then reward their dog for doing it.  

6. “You’re fine.”

Dog miscommunication happens especially when you're using words or phrases that can confuse your dog. For example, if a pet owner use this phrase in the context when you're comforting your pet, they’re more likely to understand the soothing tone of your voice and gentle pats. But using the phrase inconsistently or in stressful situations can make it hard for your dog to interpret your commands, which may affect trust and responsiveness.

7. “You know better.”

Phrases like “you know better” often fall into the category of nagging, which can be confusing for your dog, Stynchula says. Importantly, this phrase is unlikely to change your dog’s behavior. While your dog may understand that tearing up a toy isn’t appropriate, words like this rarely communicate clear instructions, making it hard for your dog to interpret your commands.

Whether you’re training your dog or simply trying to communicate better with your fur baby, it’s important to keep communication simple and consistent. So, it’s crucial to use the same cues if you want your dog to understand you. In general, using inconsistent words, long sentences and a tone that doesn’t match what you’re trying to say is a surefire way to confuse your dog. But sometimes it helps to have clear examples of ways you’re confusing your pup. Of course, these are easy traps to fall into—we’re used to communicating with other humans, after all.

Warner stresses that the temperament of the dog, regardless of its size, is the most important when choosing a pooch for a child. “There are certain breeds that are more ideal like Cavalier King Charles Spaniels,” she says. Warner calls rabbits “very good pets for children,” especially when it comes to slightly older kids who understand the importance of handling them with care. “Rabbits are very intelligent animals that are inclined to enjoy playing with their owners,” Warner notes. You can even find bunny breeds that act lke dogs and cats.

Just keep in mind that rabbits can be easily scared because they’re not as aggressive as other animals and they need to follow a strict diet to stay happy and healthy. “Their nutritional needs are also specific and incorrect feeding can lead to many health problems,” Warner says.

In fact, vets say rats are an “underrated” pet, especially when it comes to families with kids, according to Warner. “Rats are very intelligent animals that are inclined to enjoy playing with children and can be trained,” she says.

Because rats are social animals, Warner says it’s important to keep them in pairs if you end up going with these pets. “It's best to get two of these for pets instead of one because they are known to enjoy playing with each other,” she explains.

When it comes to low-maintenance pets for kids, a hamster is one vets recommend as well. “Hamsters are good pets for children since they are small, easy to care for and very interesting to watch as they interact with their environment,” Warner says. These petite pets enjoy running on wheels and making nests, which makes them “very interesting to observe,” Warner says.  

Just be aware that while hamsters are kid-friendly pets, they are also nocturnal animals. “They are most active during the night and shouldn’t be disturbed too much in the day,” Warner says. However, if you don't mind that, then they make great small pets for kids.
