1973’s Last No. 1 Hit Song Has a Heartbreaking Backstory

Thu, 02/26/2026 - 4:45am

On Dec. 29, 1973, Jim Croce’s“Time in a  Bottle”  became the last song of the year to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The emotional ballad remained No. 1 for two weeks, knocking Charlie Rich’s “The Most Beautiful Girl” from the top spot as the year ended.

Sadly, Croce never knew he had the year-ending No. 1 single. The singer died tragically three months prior, on Sept 20, 1973, in a plane crash in Natchitoches, Louisiana, while on a college concert tour. Croce was only 30 years old.

“Time in a  Bottle" appeared on Croce’s 1972 album Don’t Mess Around With Jim. The album produced the self-titled No. 8 hit during Croce’s lifetime, but it wasn’t until Croce’s death that “Time in a Bottle,”  a song about how precious life is, became the second No. 1 hit of the singer’s cut-short career. (The other was “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown” in July 1973.)

Croce's song made history

“Time in a Bottle” made Croce the third artist in the history of the Hot 100 to top the chart posthumously, following Otis Redding in 1968 and Janis Joplin in 1971, according to Billboard. Croce also became the first artist in history to top the Hot 100 chart both while living and after his death.

Croce’s final No. 1 hit received a unique boost just a week before the singer’s tragic death. “Time in the Bottle’s" posthumous success was fueled after the song was featured in the 1973 made-for-TV  movie “She Lives!” The movie starred Desi Arnaz, Jr. and Season Hubley as a young couple who face the diagnosis of a terminal illness. Croce’s record is mentioned several times in the film, and the tearjerker song is later played in its entirety over the ending credits.

“She Lives!” aired on CBS on Sept. 12, 1973, just eight days before Croce’s fatal plane crash.

The personal backstory of the song

Croce’s widow, Ingrid, revealed in an interview with Gary James’ Classic Bands that her husband wrote “Time in a Bottle" after she told him she was pregnant with their son. A.J. in early 1971.

“When he found out we were gonna have a child, he realized he was gonna have to do something about it,” Ingrid shared. “He sat down that night and wrote ‘Time In A Bottle.’"

"I really believe it's more about the immortality of life," she said of the meaning of the song. "A. J. might have been the trigger for that song as well as our relationship. I think Jim was a very eclectic songwriter. When he wrote something, it usually wasn't one circumstance that spurred it on. It was a lot of different people and a lot of different circumstances that brought that song together.”

A.J., who turned two just as his father died, grew up to be a musician.

In a 2022 interview with CBS Sunday Morning, he described “Time in a Bottle” as an “incredibly emotional” song to perform.

“Because, you know, it was written for me, and it sums up this emotion that he felt for my mother and for myself,” Croce’s son added. “I feel all kinds of things. I feel joy, a sense of thoughtfulness."

Is Luke Thompson Returning to ‘Bridgerton’ Season 5? Star Breaks Silence on Benedict’s Future (Exclusive)

Thu, 02/26/2026 - 2:01am

Luke Thompson isn't saying bye to Benedict Bridgerton. Although his character's love story culminated with an engagement to Sophie Gun, played by Yerin Ha, in Part 2, the Bridgerton star doubts the Season 4 finale will be the last fans see of Benedict.

"I doubt it. I doubt it. He's part of the family, so I'm sure he'll still be around as well as, you know, making way for the new siblings, but, yeah, of course, of course," Thompson told Parade in an exclusive interview. "He's part of the family."

🎬SIGN UP for Parade’s Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬

While Phoebe Dynevor (Daphne Bridgerton) left the show after Season 2, Luke Newton (Colin Bridgerton) and Jonathan Bailey (Anthony Bridgerton) have continued to appear as their characters, despite their respective stories having already been told.

"I actually love those scenes with Johnny [Bailey] in Part 2," Thompson said. "I think they're really interesting scenes because there's that history. There's that sort of four season history behind it. So it's always very interesting to bring back people and have those relationships, because they've got such depth to them, because we've been doing them for five, six years."

After three seasons of inhabiting Benedict and watching siblings find love, the focus shifted to Thompson's character in Season 4. Now that it's over, the West End actor is a "little bit emotional" to have Benedict's story behind him. "Quite a big chunk" of his professional career, Thompson pointed out, had "sort of like been leading up to in some way this moment."

"It is quite strange being [on] the other side of it," he confessed.

Rather than feeling relieved to have it all done, the Bridgerton star admitted, "I think I'm, yes, a little bit emotional. A little bit like, 'Oh, that was that. [Laughs] That's what that was.' It's so difficult to comprehend, maybe because I've spent so long on the one side of it."

Days after Season 4 premiered, it still hadn't fully sunk in for Thompson that he was already on the other side. "I sort of feel like when you are at the center of something like that, it's a bit of a rollercoaster," he said, also comparing it to going down a slide.

"You sort of like end up at the other end of it and you're like, 'Oh, that was it.' It just goes sort of like in a flash. In a way, when I think back to the nine months filming, like it was both nine months, but it also felt like a few weeks in my head," Thompson shared. "You're so engaged for nine months, time just flies away from me."

Season 4 explored Benedict and Sophie's love story

As for what lies ahead for his character, that's up to the writers. "We shall see," he said.

But, when it comes to the Netflix series taking creative liberties, like gender-swapping Michael Stirling, Thompson believes the show, inspired byJulia Quinn's novels, has "done a wonderful job of absolutely meeting the fandom."

"I think authenticity or accuracy in any form, I'm always quite suspicious of. I'm suspicious of it when people, to be honest, whine about the idea that Bridgerton isn't historically accurate because I sort of think that's not the point," Thompson said. "It's never been the point. It's a drama. It's not a history lesson."

And as Thompson noted, "that is nothing new," citing William Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Night's Dream as an example. The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art alum said, "[A] Midsummer Night's Dream is set in ancient Greece, but it's all about Elizabethan England. Shakespeare didn't care about that... It's just a mishmash of all sorts of things. So I just think a lot of art isn't that interested in it being accurate. And I believe kind of the same with the books."

The actor is "very proud" of Bridgerton

Thompson continued, "I think the books are the books and the series is the series. And I think the series has done a wonderful job of absolutely meeting the fandom in terms of like what they love about the books, but also surprising them, and also bringing that material into our century. Not just our century, but our decade. In terms of like that it reflects the diversity of experiences out there. I'm very suspicious of the word authenticity, I think, generally."

Thompson takes pride in the Netflix series, which was renewed in 2025 for a fifth and sixth season. "It's been a huge part of my career," he said. "I'm very, very proud of the show."

It's also a show - yes, known for its sex scenes - that Thompson believes has a "real purity about it." He explained, "It doesn't apologize for any of it. Like even the sex is just overt and again, it feels like part of the story. It doesn't feel like sort of chucked in, and it doesn't feel like an attempt to be, I don't know, salacious or something."

"It's got a purity about it in terms of its intent," Thompson added. "It's like this is what the story is, this is what we want to do, this is what we want to give people. And we sort of don't care if people think this or people think that."

Part 1 and Part 2 of Bridgerton Season 4 are now streaming on Netflix.

Fearless Heroine of Classic Children's Book Series is Getting Her Own Musical

Thu, 02/26/2026 - 12:49am

What was your favorite children's book growing up?

For all the once-little girls out there, Madeline hardcovers may have filled your shelves back in the day. And in case you're worried the literary heroine's time has come and gone, that notion can be quashed. The legacy of the beloved redhead who spent her days at a Paris boarding school lives on...

On Wednesday, Feb. 25, Deadline announced that kids and family animation company Sycamore Studios has acquired rights to Madeline, the iconic series written and illustrated by Ludwig Bemelmans.

The studio has reportedly begun early development on a new animated musical feature to celebrate Bemelman's timeless world. It will also look to expand the Madeline brand across film, TV and strategic licensing initiatives, Deadline added, with a focus on preserving the heart and legacy that has resonated with generations of families.

The outlet noted that Sycamore is working closely with the Bemelmans family, including Barbara Bemelmans — who was the inspiration for her father’s classic character and has been a devoted steward of his work.

"We are incredibly excited to be working with Sycamore Studios," said John Bemelmans Marciano — author of the bestselling Klawde series and writer of six additional Madeline books that built on his grandfather’s legacy following his passing — in a statement on behalf of the Bemelman family, per Deadline. "From the start, they’ve been so respectful of the legacy that has been part of our family for nearly nine decades now. Most important has been their willingness to understand what makes Madeline a timeless character, and not a vessel for the most popular kid trends of the moment."

On a similar note, another high-profile book was recently announced to be adapted — but this one is more suited for young adults. The White Lotus star Aimee Lou Wood is attached to star in a new TV adaptation of Jane Eye, the classic 1847 novel by Charlotte Brontë. Next year will mark the 80th anniversary of the source material’s release.

Park Chan-wook To Head 2026 Cannes Jury

Thu, 02/26/2026 - 12:41am

South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook is heading to Cannes! But this time in a more authoritative role as the Jury President.

Yes, you heard it right. The prestigious Cannes Film Festival has named the helmer of No Other Choice as the Jury President for its upcoming 79th edition, making him the first Korean filmmaker or artist ever to lead the iconic panel, according to Variety.

Festival President Iris Knobloch and Director Thierry Frémaux expressed their excitement in a joint statement, saying that the appointment of the South Korean filmmaker is a celebration of Korean cinema's growing global influence. Consequently, they praised Park for his ability to authentically portray "multiple impulses" of the human spirit on the big screen.

View this post on Instagram

"Park Chan-wook’s inventiveness, visual mastery, and penchant for capturing the multiple impulses of women and men with strange destinies have given contemporary cinema some truly memorable moments. We are delighted to celebrate his immense talent and, more broadly, the cinema of a country deeply engaged with the questioning of our time," the duo said in a joint statement. (via Variety)

The decision to make Park Chan-wook the jury president feels like a natural homecoming for the director. Often referred to as the "Cannes regular," his relationship with the legendary festival spans over two decades. It all began in 2004 when his revenge thriller Oldboytook everyone by storm and won the Grand Prix accolade. Since then, he has consistently returned to the event with hits like Thirst, which took home the Jury Prize in 2009, and The Handmaiden in 2016. Most recently, he took home the Best Director trophy in 2022 for the elegant noir Decision to Leave.

CJ Entertainment

Speaking about his appointment as the Jury President, the filmmaker noted (via Variety), "To be enclosed in a theatre to watch films, and enclosed again to engage in debate with the members of the jury, this double, voluntary confinement is something I await with great anticipation. In this age of mutual hatred and division, I believe that the simple act of gathering in a theatre to watch a single film together, our breaths and heartbeats aligning, is itself a moving and universal expression of solidarity."

For movie lovers, Park’s leadership promises a jury that values bold, atmospheric, and perhaps slightly subversive filmmaking. Known for his meticulous attention to detail, he isn't one to shy away from complex moral questions.

The 79th Cannes Film Festival is scheduled to run from May 12 to May 23, 2026.

'Back to the Future' Actor Sued for Battery by Former Girlfriend

Wed, 02/25/2026 - 11:38pm

Back to the Future actor Crispin Glover is being sued for battery, fraud, and emotional distress by an ex-girlfriend.

Glover's unidentified former girlfriend is accusing him of battery, fraud, wrongful eviction, malicious prosecution, and intentional infliction of emotional distress according to a complaint obtained by People. Glover is also being accused of violating California's civil rights law, the Bane Act.

The court filing claims that the allegations against Glover come from a, "disturbing series of incidents in which Jane Doe was essentially held captive and used for sex and free labor by Mr. Glover under false pretenses."

In a statement to TMZ, representatives for Glover called the allegations "baseless."

The former girlfriend, only referred to as "Jane Doe" in the filing, claims that she met Glover in 2015 on social media. She alleges that Glover would send her "strange" messages and urge her to move to Los Angeles as she is from the United Kingdom.

Jane Doe then alleges that she met Glover in person eight years later in Germany where he proceeded to show her "several items of Nazi memorabilia from his collection."

She then went on to accuse Glover of "grooming" her and that he made, "promises of a new life where she could start over and have a career in the entertainment industry through some sort of business relationship with him."

She moved to Los Angeles in 2024 under the conditions that Glover would provide her with a home and job as his assistant per the complaint.

After her move to Los Angeles, Jane Doe alleges she, "found herself in a disturbing situation where Mr. Glover wanted to control her actions and track her whereabouts and basically serve him as a live in girlfriend/sex slave."

The filing claims that she informed Glover she was leaving the home to go to a mosque and he proceeded to lock her out of the home. She claims Glover unlawfully evicted her from the home, "without notice or warning of any kind, rendering her homeless."

Jane Doe is also accusing Glover of, "attacking her, grabbing her neck and choking her in a headlock, leaving a visible wound and scar on her neck," when she returned to the home to retrieve her belongings and pet cats.

Glover's representation responded to these allegations, stating, "The reality is that on March 2, 2024, Mr. Glover was the victim of an unprovoked felony assault by Jane Doe at his Los Angeles residence. Mr. Glover called LAPD, which came to the scene, investigated, and arrested Jane Doe."

His representatives added, "These facts are documented by law enforcement records and by the restraining order filed by Mr. Glover against Jane Doe at that time."

However, Jane Doe's complaint claims the restraining order was "malicious, fraudulent, and was swiftly dismissed for failure to prosecute."

1972 Hit Ranked ‘Best Movie of All Time’

Wed, 02/25/2026 - 11:10pm

One of the most enduring films of the 20th century has once again taken the top spot.

The Godfather, Francis Ford Coppola's landmark 1972 crime drama, has been ranked the best movie of all time by Rotten Tomatoes. The iconic film currently holds an impressive 97% score on the popular movie rating site, further cementing its reputation as one of the greatest achievements in film history.

Based on Mario Puzo's 1969 novel of the same name, The Godfather began as a publishing phenomenon. Though the book did not win major literary awards, it became a massive bestseller, spending 67 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list and introducing millions of readers to the Corleone crime family. Puzo later teamed up with Coppola to co-write the screenplay, ensuring the adaptation stayed true to the novel's operatic scope and emotional weight.

Released in 1972, the film follows the powerful Corleone family, led by patriarch Vito Corleone, played by the legendary Marlon Brando. As rival crime families threaten their empire, reluctant son Michael Corleone, played by Al Pacino, is drawn deeper into the family business, setting the stage for a sweeping saga about loyalty, power and betrayal.

"I've always felt The Godfather was really less about gangsters, than about power and powerful families, and the succession of power, and the Machiavellian way that real power works in the world," Coppola told BBC in 1991.

"It seemed to me that Michael Corleone in the first Godfather, like America, started really with some ideals, freshness, and although he came from Europe, as America really was born out of Europe, there were these new ideals and new directions which was so inspiring,"

When The Godfather hit theaters, it was both a commercial and critical triumph. The film won the Academy Award for Best Picture, while Marlon Brando took home Best Actor for his now-iconic portrayal of Vito Corleone. Coppola and Puzo also won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. In total, the film received 10 nominations, including a Best Director nod for Coppola.

Beyond the trophies, The Godfather reshaped modern cinema. Its moody cinematography, deliberate pacing and layered performances elevated the gangster genre into high art. Lines like "I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse" became instantly legendary, woven into pop culture for decades.

More than 50 years after its release, the film continues to influence filmmakers and captivate new audiences. Its themes of family, ambition and moral compromise feel as urgent now as they did in the early 1970s.

Now, with its latest recognition as the best movie of all time, The Godfather once again proves why some stories don’t just endure, they define an era.

Starbucks Launches 5 New Health-Conscious Drink Creations

Wed, 02/25/2026 - 11:01pm

Starbucks is doubling down on a trend it said took over its coffeehouses shortly after it launched last fall, expanding it to the ready-to-drink aisle at grocery stores and major retailers nationwide.

Back in September, Starbucks announced it was "modernizing" its drink menu by adding an entirely new product category. Now, almost six months later, it's bringing its popular protein coffee line to the ready-to-enjoy section of most grocery stores and major retailers (well, what seems to be a near-copycat recipe, anyway).

Not only that, it's expanding the collections of a few already established favorites. Among the updates are a new ready-to-drink Frappuccino flavor and a refreshed Doubleshot Energy recipe.

Starbucks Expands Its Ready-to-Drink Line With New High-Protein and Low-Sugar Options

On Thursday, Starbucks announced it would launch a new line of ready-to-drink Coffee & Protein beverages inspired by its recent menu additions and the increased protein goals of many Americans.

"Consumers are looking for wellness solutions that fit seamlessly into their morning routines," Brian Smith, senior director of brand marketing, North American Coffee Partnership (Starbucks joint venture with PepsiCo Foods), shared in a statement, adding that the new Starbucks Coffee & Protein delivers both "great taste and nutrients" in a convenient format.

Starbucks' new Coffee & Protein beverages blend premium Starbucks coffee with 22 grams of protein, 5 grams of prebiotic fiber, five essential vitamins and minerals and just 2 grams of sugar, according to an official description. It's debuting in two flavors: Classic Caffè and Caffè Mocha.

Related: Starbucks Just Dropped a ‘Warm’ New Coffee Flavor for Spring

The new beverage offering will be available in grocery stores, convenience stores and gas stations nationwide for a suggested retail price of $3.99 per 12-ounce bottle. The company also said fans can expect to find the Caffè Mocha flavor on shelves at Sam’s Club in a slightly smaller, 11-ounce bottle that features 20 grams of protein.

Starbucks

As for its other new, health-conscious offers, Starbucks is reimagining its zero-sugar energy drink line, adding a new flavor to its bottled Frappuccino collection and expanding its ready-to-drink Iced Espresso collection.

Starbucks' revised Doubleshot Energy Zero Sugar is available in Dark Chocolate and French Vanilla flavors (SRP $3.59 per can), keeps "the same bold coffee taste" and makes each under 100 calories per 15-ounce can (the prior variety featured 210 calories per 15-ounce serving of the Vanilla flavor and 220 for the Mocha).

The coffee giant's new Chocolate Hazelnut Gelato Frappuccino Lite offers a deep, velvety chocolate flavor, accented by rich hazelnut, and a creamy texture, per the brand. The new flavor also features no added sugar and only 100 calories per 9.5-ounce bottle, just like the existing Sea Salt Caramel Gelato, Creamy Vanilla Gelato, and Double Chocolate Gelato Frappuccino Lite flavors (SRP $2.99 per bottle).

It also said its ready-to-enjoy Iced Espresso line would include a Lite collection, debuting in two flavors—Iced Espresso Lite Chilled Multiserve Vanilla Latte and Caramel Macchiato—both of which feature zero added sugar, only 90 calories per serving, and are available in 40-ounce bottles (SRP $7.49).

S

Starbucks new Coffee & Protein, reimagined Doubleshot Energy Zero Sugar recipe, and new Chocolate Hazelnut Gelato Frappuccino Lite flavor will be available at retailers nationwide beginning on March 23. And because Starbucks knew fans would want something fresh to hold them over until March, it decided to make its new Starbucks Iced Espresso Lite Chilled Multiserve bottle available now. Find it wherever you find other multiserve, ready-to-enjoy Starbies offers (prices may vary).
