Cardiologists Say This Common Restaurant Habit Can Harm Your Arteries Over Time

Mon, 03/09/2026 - 9:50am

For most Americans, eating out isn’t a special treat; it’s a way of life. According to The Takeout, the average American eats out five to six times a week. If this reflects your eating habits, your restaurant orders and habits are massively impacting your health. After all, it’s what we do regularly that affects the body the most.

When meals are cooked and prepared at home, it’s easy to control the ingredients and portion sizes. It’s much easier to overindulge when eating out. You may order a soda, sweet tea or alcoholic beverage, even though at home you tend to stick with water. You may dig into the complimentary bread basket or chips and salsa without giving it a second thought, which can lead to consuming more calories than you would otherwise.

According to data collected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service, each meal or snack eaten outside the home adds an extra 134 calories to a person’s daily caloric intake. Researchers also found that eating one additional meal out each week translates to roughly two extra pounds each year.

Considering that obesity is a primary risk factor for high blood pressure, high cholesterol and cardiovascular disease, this isn’t exactly great news in terms of heart health. There’s one common restaurant habit in particular that cardiologists say is particularly detrimental to artery health.

The Popular Restaurant Habit That Directly Damages Arteries

Lourdes Balduque

If you tend to reach for the salt shaker before digging into your food, you’re likely damaging your arteries without even realizing it. “Consuming excessive salt has a major impact on blood pressure. This is important because high blood pressure is extremely common and is associated with many health problems, such as coronary artery disease, heart attack, stroke, kidney disease and congestive heart failure,” says Dr. Steven Borer, DO, FACC, a cardiologist with Hartford HealthCare Heart & Vascular Institute.

Dr. Karishma Patwa, MD, a cardiologist with Manhattan Cardiology and contributor to LabFinder, adds to this, saying, “High sodium diets can not only raise blood pressure but can also cause inflammation and damage to the arteries of the body."

Related: This Is Hands-Down the Most Underrated Way To Walk for Heart Health, Cardiologists Say

Restaurant meals are much higher in sodium than home-cooked meals. A large U.S. nutrition analysis found that restaurant meals have about 412 milligrams more sodium than home-cooked meals. This means that adding salt to your meals when eating out is even more detrimental than using it to flavor your food at home. It also makes staying under the 2,300 milligrams of sodium a day recommended by the American Heart Association more difficult.

How Consuming Too Much Sodium Can Impact Heart Health Over Time

Dr. Borer says that consuming too much sodium impacts blood pressure both immediately and long-term. “High sodium diets can impact blood pressure immediately by expanding the fluid volume in the bloodstream, because salt causes fluid retention. It can also result in the gradual stiffening of arteries, which also increases blood pressure over time,” he explains.

Here’s the good news: Reducing the amount of sodium in your diet can turn your blood pressure numbers around pretty quickly. “Reducing salt can have blood pressure-lowering effects within days because of the reduction in excess salt and fluid in the bloodstream, and can improve arterial stiffness and function within weeks to months,” Dr. Borer says.

Related: What's More Important for Heart Health: Lowering Dietary Cholesterol or Saturated Fat?

But he adds that the longer someone has had high blood pressure, the longer it may take to improve through reducing sodium. He adds that high blood pressure isn’t always reversible and sometimes still requires medication.

What happens if you continue to add salt to your meals and consume more than recommended? Dr. Patwa says it can significantly increase the risk of stroke or heart attack.

Eating out less often is one way to reduce the amount of sodium you’re consuming. So is not reaching for the salt shaker. Dr. Borer says that many ultra-processed foods (including sauces and condiments) are high in sodium, which is something else to be aware of.

When you’re eating at home, both cardiologists say that using herbs and spices other than salt to give food flavor is a way to not only reduce how much salt you’re consuming but also make your meals even more heart-healthy. This, they say, is because herbs and spices are high in antioxidants, which help reduce blood pressure

There’s so much enjoyment that comes from eating out. But most people would agree that doing it six times a week is a lot. Going to restaurants a little less frequently is healthier, saves money and makes it more special. It also makes controlling how much sodium you’re consuming a lot easier.

This Sweet New Costco Bakery Treat Is an Easy Add to Cart

Mon, 03/09/2026 - 9:47am

If you have a sweet tooth, you already know Costco’s bakery has some of the warehouse’s most indulgent finds. The latest arrival continues that tradition with a treat that looks like something straight out of a café pastry case.

These new Strawberry Mascarpone Croissants combine buttery pastry with a light mascarpone whipped cream filling and fresh, bright red strawberries. The result is a dessert that’s both rich and refreshing, with bright fruit balancing the croissant’s flaky layers.

Take a look at the new bakery treat in this March 8 Instagram shared by Alex @costcofinds.alex:

View this post on Instagram

These croissants almost look too pretty to eat. The price also makes them easy to justify. A pack of four large croissants sells for $9.99, which works out to just a few dollars each. For something that could easily pass for a bakery café dessert, that’s a pretty solid deal.

Costco’s croissants are already a favorite on their own, known for their crisp outer layers and soft, airy centers. Once they’re filled with mascarpone whipped cream and topped with sliced strawberries, though, they become something far more indulgent.

They would work just as well for an afternoon coffee break as they would for a casual gathering. If you have coworkers who appreciate a sweet surprise in the break room or friends coming over for dinner, these croissants would make an easy dessert that still looks impressive on the table.

Costco’s Strawberry Mascarpone Croissants Join Other Notable Bakery and Freezer Finds

The same video also highlights a couple of other items worth noting. One is Success Import’s Fresh Matcha Red Bean Cake and Puff Pastry set, priced at $7.79. The package includes 16 slices of soft matcha sponge cake, paired with sweet red bean paste on the side, so you can add as much filling as you like with each bite.

Another item featured is Schär frozen puff pastry dough, available for $5.99 for two rolls. Keeping a package of frozen pastry in the freezer can come in handy during the spring baking season, especially if you’re planning to make quick desserts like fruit tartlets or savory dishes like spinach pie.

As always with Costco bakery and freezer finds, availability can vary by warehouse. But if you spot the strawberry mascarpone croissants in your local bakery section, the $9.99 four-pack makes them an easy addition to the cart for anyone craving a fresh, creamy, fruit-filled pastry.

Construction Crew Accidentally Unearths a 500-Year-Old Medieval Castle While Excavating

Mon, 03/09/2026 - 9:46am

Crews working on a park project were treated to a major surprise in Ghent, Belgium last month. Construction workers, who believed they were transforming a historic military site into a public park instead found the ruins of a settlement.

As the crews dug deeper, they realized that they were onto something major, and eventually archaeologists determined that workers had found the medieval St. Bavo's Abbey district, which had long thought to have been leveled prior to the construction of the military fortress. Instead, it looks like the town had been buried in an ultimate act of cruelty by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V.

Construction Crews Find Buried Medieval Town

According to the Daily Galaxy, the park project uncovered the remains of St. Bavo's Abbey and the nearly 800 homes that surrounded the once bustling Ghent city. However, the Ghent Archaeological Service says that the city was completely devastated around 1540, when a dispute about taxes prompted the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V to have the abbey and its surrounding homes destroyed as punishment.

While researchers say they knew all about the town's fate, they had always assumed that the town had been leveled and cleared before construction of the military settlement that was eventually built in the same location by Spanish forces. Instead, they were shocked to know that emperor had instead had it buried so that no trace of the history of the settlement would remain.

“This is a real treasure trove,” Ghent Archaeological Service's Geert Venmark told the Daily Galaxy. That's because the weight of the citadel that was atop the city helped aid in its preservation, keeping almost all of the structures intact. Not only that, but archaeologists say they were also able to uncover other items in the city, including tools, Roman ceramics, and even household pottery.

According to the local tourism board, history lovers will absolutely get their fill in Ghent. The region is home to many medieval structures, including the Castle of Counts. For those who don't know, the castle has a storied and sorted history, and is one of the most infamous old buildings in the city.

Those visiting Ghent will also want to check out:

  • St. Bavo's Cathedral, which is home to the church and the painting of the "Mystic Lamb"
  • Ghent Belfry, a UNESCO World Heritage site
  • Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent
  • Ghent City Museum (STAM)
  • St. Peter's Abbey
  • Coupure, the historic waterway that connects Ghent and Bruges

Son of Country Music Icon, 92, Announces Another Exciting Tour Update

Mon, 03/09/2026 - 9:46am

More good news for Lukas Nelson fans. The country music singer, songwriter, Grammy winner, and son of the legendary Willie Nelson, 92, can't stop squeezing in additional tour dates and cities for his fans. Now there are even more ways to see the singer live.

The younger Nelson, 37, recently opened up about his decision to quit both weed and alcohol.

In the interview with People, Nelson shares, “Now I can be clear with myself and not want to run away from myself, which is great. I get high from making the right decision every time. I’m addicted to that high now of saying no. It’s a great feeling.”

While Nelson admits pot-smoking was a harder habit to kick for him than alcohol, he's finding great benefits in giving up both. “Every time I took a drink or smoked weed, it just f*cked my sleep up ..." He said, "Even one drink, it just screws it up so bad that I was like, ‘I’d rather wake up feeling good.’”

His dad Willie Nelson is a long-time advocate for the legalization of marijuana and even has his own cannabis brand, Willie's Reserve. Of course, every substance works differently—or simply does not work—for everybody. Even if his dad can be creative and productive and works well while smoking weed, it's certainly not for everyone. And Lukas seems energized, as he continues expanding stops on his latest tour.

The newly added dates and cities for 2026 include the following:

  • May 2 - Waco, Tex.
  • May 3 - Abilene, Tex.
  • Lots more dates and cites on Nelson's website, too!

"'Ain’t Done' announcing a couple more shows this year!" reads Nelson's official Instagram announcement of the additional dates and cities. And of course, "Ain't Done" is a play on the title of the top single on his 2025 solo album, American Romance. Tickets are on sale now.

What Has Oprah Said About Using Weight Loss Medication?

Winfrey’s slimmed-down physique comes after decades of struggling with her weight. When she finally found weight loss medications like Ozempic to deal with her issues, the TV icon found a way to “release her shame” about it.

“I realized I’d been blaming myself all these years for being overweight, and I have a predisposition that no amount of willpower is going to control,” she told PEOPLE in December 2023. “Obesity is a disease. It’s not about willpower — it’s about the brain.”

Earlier this year, Winfrey spoke on her podcast about the realizations that she had about how her brain operated differently from someone who doesn’t struggle with weight issues.

“One of the things that I realized the very first time I took a GLP-1 was that all these years I thought that thin people, those people just had more willpower,” she said on the Jan. 14 episode of The Oprah Podcast. “They ate better foods. They were able to stick to it longer. They never had a potato chip. And then I realized the very first time I took the GLP-1 that, ‘Oh, they’re not even thinking about it. They’re only eating when they’re hungry and they’re stopping when they’re full.’”

What's Oprah's Workout Routine?

In addition to weight-loss medication, Winfrey has added a rigorous workout regimen to her routine. In her ABC special “Shame, Blame and the Weight Loss Revolution,” Winfrey shared that she is “hiking three to five miles a day.” She also does strength training and has taken up running. For her 70th birthday, Winfrey shared a video of herself jogging on the beach. She used a hashtag that read “health is the best gift.”

Paris Jackson Rips Michael Jackson's Estate for 'Waste of Resources' Amidst Ongoing Legal Dispute: 'Making It As Expensive and Time-Consuming As Possible'

Mon, 03/09/2026 - 9:36am

Paris Jackson has officially clapped back against her late father's estate amidst their ongoing legal battle.

According to People magazine, Paris's legal team is deliberating on a new filing by Michael Jackson's estate, which specifically aims to recover attorneys' fees, a move that Paris' team described as a "waste of resources" whose only purpose was "make it as expensive and time-consuming as possible for Paris."

These comments come after a months-long legal battle between Jackson and her father's estate, the latter of whom filed an anti-SLAPP motion against Paris in November of last year. In response, Paris's attorneys refued the motion, claiming that it "could not, and did not, have any impact on the litigation other than to cause delay" in the ongoing legal proceedings.

Earlier this year, Jackson's executors filed a second motion claiming that they were entitled to over $115,000 in legal fees stemming from the anti-SLAPP motion. In their February 26 filing, Paris's legal team argued against their claim, pointing to the fact that the executors "admitted that the [anti-SLAPP] motion was merely a 'procedural' objection, and its minimal effects were entirely overcome simply by filing a functionally identical pleading styled as a 'motion' rather than as a 'petition.'"

"Executors allowed two of the same law firms who received improper payments to attack Paris... For this self-interested work, Executors paid these law firms an additional $115,355.52 in attorneys’ fees and costs," the brief alleges.

"The SLAPP [lawsuit] was a waste of resources that executors had a duty to avoid and likely could have avoided," the brief goes on to say.

The brief comes roughly three months after estate executors John McClain and John Branca filed a fee request for the anti-SLAPP motion on January 9. According to the itemized document, the fees and costs accrued are due to the time spent research Paris' past petition.

'90s Rock Icon Announces New Documentary

Mon, 03/09/2026 - 9:35am

Their name is Dead City Punx, but as a new documentary will show, they're keeping the renegade punk spirit alive in the City of Angels.

DEAD CITY PUNX—executive produced by Rage Against The Machine frontman Zack de la Rocha, alongside Roger Gastman and Joseph Pattisall, released via BEYOND THE STREETS—details the rise of DCP, four self-described "outcasts from society's margins."

The band of "old punk rockers" embraced the genre's "do it yourself" ethos to put on illegal public shows throughout Los Angeles, complete with "graffiti backdrops, bonfires, and police helicopters," per a press release. The dangerous, chaotic nature of DCP shows has appealed to a new generation of punk fans, who feel the city has "swallowed them whole."

The band first started when founding members, Grumpy and Meka, met in a rundown house in a gang-controlled neighborhood in Central Los Angeles. Inspired to start a band, they recruited Mike (a well-known graffiti writer)on vocals and Adrian on bass. They played their first show in 2019, right before the COVID lockdowns shuttered venues—so they decided to throw their own shows, instead.

DCP's first began playing in the deserts outside of Los Angeles, at the Echo Park Recreation Center, and beneath the 6th Street Bridge. They'd promote the shows over social media, giving fans just a few hours to show up for a show unlike any other. Eventually, DCP shows started going viral, which had the adverse effect of drawing attention from the LAPD and the city's mayor.

The chaotic nature of their shows earned them the nickname "LA's Most Dangerous Band," but DEAD CITY PUNX aims to reframe the argument. Instead of putting on "illegal shows," the documentary hopes to challenge the "definitions of public space, rebellion, and the right to assemble."

DEAD CITY PUNX will make its world premiere at The Regent Theater in Los Angeles on April 16th at 7:30 p.m. (get tickets here) and 9:30 p.m. (get tickets here). The next day, April 17th, a DEAD CITY PUNX 'behind-the-scenes' gallery opens at BEYOND THE STREETS.

DCP's guerrilla shows are very similar to what Zack de la Rocha did twenty-five years ago with Rage Against The Machine (guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford, and drummer Brad Wilk) shut down the New York Stock Exchange in 2000 when they played on the steps of the Federal Hall National Memorial in New York City.

The band was shooting a music video for "Sleep Now In The Fire," with Michael Moore directing. Tom Morello recalled Moore's instructions, per Yahoo: "'This is what we're going to do today. We've got a permit to play on the federal steps. We do not have a permit to play on the city streets, but we're going to be up on the federal steps. But don't stop playing, no matter what happens.'"

The band played on the steps, with the NYPD watching on nearby. As expected, Moore decided to take the band on the sidewalk, and the cops pounced.

"As they're carrying Michael Moore off in irons, Mike turns over his shoulder and delivers his second directorial edict of the afternoon, which is: 'Take the New York Stock Exchange!' That was not in any video treatment."

"So we rush over there," added Morello. "I go through the door, and there's a frumpy dude and a security guy in a jacket. And I'm like, 'Hey, I'm here to take the New York Stock Exchange. Is that a right or a left?' And he hits the panic button, and the riot police come, and the riot doors slam shut."

Khloé Kardashian Says She Counts Down to Sunday for One Dairy Queen Treat

Mon, 03/09/2026 - 9:27am

Khloé Kardashian is pretty disciplined when it comes to her health routine. So when a fan asked her to spill the beans on her "unhealthiest habit" during a Wednesday, March 4 Ask Me Anything segment on her podcast Khloé in Wonderland, the answer wasn’t what anyone expected.

"I love Dairy Queen," she said. "I just got Uber Eats on my phone and that was a big mistake because every weekend I Uber myself Dairy Queen and I can't stop."

Her order is very specific. Her order is very specific. The 41-year-old Good American co-founder said she waits all week for Sunday, when she treats herself to a large Oreo Blizzard with extra Oreos. "I'm like, f**k, it's Tuesday. Like, I need to get through to Sunday," she joked. "It is quite possibly the best thing I've ever had."

For context, Kardashian has previously said cutting out dairy played a major role in her weight loss. In a past interview with NewBeauty, she explained, “I’m obsessed with cheese and milk, but eliminating them from my diet made the biggest difference. In a month and a half, I lost 11 pounds just from not eating dairy.”

That makes her go-to indulgence — a Dairy Queen Oreo Blizzard — a little unexpected.

Still, the mom of two isn’t apologizing for it. “It’s all about balance in life,” she said, adding that “lying in bed, watching weird TV shows, and eating Dairy Queen” makes her “so happy.”

She even pitched herself as a brand partner on the spot: "Just have them give me a Blizzard and I'll read whatever ad they want."

If Dairy Queen does call, she'd be in pretty good company. Warren Buffett, whose Berkshire Hathaway has owned Dairy Queen since 1998, is one of the chain's most devoted fans. He and Bill Gates even worked a shift behind the counter in 2019. As for the Blizzard, it's been the chain's signature menu item since 1985. Balls in your court, DQ.

Wood told The U.K. Sunday Times that McKellan spilled the beans on the possibility of them returning for a new film installment, but is keeping quiet until they make an official announcement. He added that there's a "genuine feeling of getting the band back together." The actor also gave his two cents on McKellan's previous comment on not letting anyone play his legendary role as Gandalf while he's still able, and admits he feels the same way.

"I totally get that. I certainly wouldn’t want anybody else to play Frodo either as long as I’m alive and able," Wood said. "And I can also recognize what fun that is going to be — when you are in the cinema, and you see the hat turn around, and it’s Gandalf. Because I’m also a fan, and excited to see how it all comes together."

Both McKellan and Wood's comments have led fans to believe that they are both reprising their roles for Serkis's new installment, alongside the actor as Gollum. Last year, Orlando Bloom also revealed a similar sentiment, having stated he's "hate to see anyone else play Legolas" and would gladly accept returning to the role. His Fellowship of the Ring co-star Viggo Mortensen also expressed his desire to return under the right circumstances.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum was originally scheduled for a 2026 release but has been pushed back to 2027. It takes place during the period between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, where Aragorn embarks on a dangerous quest to track down Gollum before Sauron does. None of the original cast have yet to announce their official return to the franchise.

This Controversial 1982 'Facts of Life' Episode Is Still Shocking 44 Years Later

Mon, 03/09/2026 - 9:25am

If you were a kid growing up in the '80s, your favorite TV shows probably provided a pleasant distraction most of the time. But every now and then, a show that usually had good vibes would suddenly take a dark turn...like the trauma-inducing "Sylvia" episode of Little House on the Prairie or the tragic Growing Pains episode featuring Matthew Perryas as Carol Seaver's doomed boyfriend Sandy.

One sitcom that famously took a few detours into controversial territory was Facts of Life, which dealt with issues like suicide, sexual assault...and in one episode that definitely gave young viewers a jolt, human trafficking.

In the Season 3 episode titled “Runaway,” Mrs. Garrett (Charlotte Rae) tells Tootie (Kim Fields) that she's too young to go along with the older girls on a trip to see a Broadway show in New York City. Naturally, Tootie feels left out...so she decides to go to the city by herself. Things don't go as planned, unfortunately.

After Tootie's wallet gets stolen, she's unable to pay her bill at a diner. Luckily (but not really), a friendly teen named Kristie (Tammy Lauren) comes to the rescue...but it turns out she has an ulterior motive. Kristie is a prostitute, and she's actually trying to recruit Tootie for her pimp, but the naive Eastland student doesn't catch on at first. Thankfully, a waitress named Bernice intervenes before it's too late.

“Those two nice people are going to take you to a nice apartment, give you a nice warm drink, and you’re gonna wake up three days later,” she says. “Do you want to be for sale, like Kristie?"

Luckily, Mrs. Garrett and the other girls come to Tootie's rescue soon after that, and everybody gets home safely after learning a valuable lesson. Facts of Life fans learned a lesson, too, as the comments on a YouTube clip from the episode prove.

"This was my favorite episode...It scared me, but it made me think, it also made me more careful of my surroundings," one person wrote.

"I remember this was a bizarre episode seeing this as a 4th grader," a second commenter recalled, with another adding, "This episode saved my life when I was 10. So very grateful."

But what about Kristie? In retrospect, it could be said that the most disturbing thing about "Runaway" was the fact that the main characters didn't do anything to help the troubled teen.

Tennis Star Monica Seles, 52, Is Feeling Grateful 33 Years After Devastating Attack

Mon, 03/09/2026 - 9:13am

Tennis legend Monica Seles, who is navigating life with myasthenia gravis, is feeling grateful after years of ups and downs.

The nine-time Grand Slam champion, 52, who was attacked with a boning knife during a quarterfinal match at the Citizen Cup in 1993, has faced plenty of obstacles throughout her lengthy athletic career. In addition to the devastating physical and mental effects of the attack, Seles has faced significant challenges since being diagnosed with myasthenia gravis in 2022. While she officially retired from tennis in 2008, the seasoned athlete is working hard to maintain her mental health and stay fit in the gym as she navigates health issues.

In a new Instagram post, Seles looks better than ever as she enjoys brunch.

"Gorgeous day ☀️, relaxing brunch 🥂, and feeling grateful beyond words! ❤️," the stunning tennis star shared.

Her Career Comeback After the Attack

While Seles doesn’t speak extensively about her 1993 attack “because it takes me back to a very dark place in my life,” she has shared how devastating it was. Gunther Parche, an obsessed Steffi Graf fan, stabbed her in the shoulder, shocking the crowd as onlookers pulled him off Seles. But the worst part was that the tennis court, which she knew as her safe space, was taken away from her.

“I had grown up on a tennis court – it was where I felt most safe, most secure – and that day in Hamburg, everything was taken away from me. My innocence. My rankings, all my income, endorsements – they were all cancelled. And the one person who could have comforted me, really, who understood what it meant, my father, was of course facing this awful illness,” she told the Guardian in 2009. (Her father died in 1998.)

After years of hard work, Seles triumphed and made her way back to the court.

Living with Myasthenia Gravis

In 2022, Seles was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis, a rare autoimmune condition. She went public with her diagnosis in 2025, sharing that she knew something was wrong when she “started experiencing symptoms like extreme leg weakness, arm weakness, and double vision.

So I realized, ‘This is very unusual,'” she said. “Once I was diagnosed, it was like a relief, but also it was a challenge. Even coming here today — in the old days, traveling would be a no-brainer. Now I had to get packing tips. I had to learn a new way to live with MG,” she told ABC News.

Here’s a look at Seles speaking about her life with the condition.

This Northern California Gem Is Becoming the West Coast’s Next Big Wine Destination—And It’s Not Napa

Mon, 03/09/2026 - 9:10am

When most people envision a California wine getaway, they immediately think of the vine-covered hills of Napa or the fog-swept valleys of Sonoma. But just 90 minutes inland lies Lodi, a legacy agricultural powerhouse that actually grows more premium wine grapes than Napa and Sonoma combined. Despite its massive output, Lodi has remained one of the state's most approachable and under-the-radar secrets—until now.

Nominated for Parade’s “America’s Favorite Small Town,” Lodi is currently having a major moment as a new generation of creative entrepreneurs and winemakers breathe fresh energy into its historic soil. "Lodi doesn’t try to be Napa," explains local influencer Tracci Dare (@daringdarlingbold). "It’s proudly, distinctly Lodi… That's why it's having a moment."

Whether you're looking for world-class Zinfandel or rare Old World varietals like Assyrtiko and Cinsault, Lodi offers a welcoming, "no reservations" atmosphere that feels like a breath of fresh air. As Pete Murdaca, owner of the legendary Pietro’s Trattoria, puts it: "Where else can you travel the countryside, stumble upon a winery or restaurant, and talk directly to the owner, the winemaker or the guy you get the milk from? Connecting the product with the person who's making it is incredibly endearing."

A Legacy of Vines: Why Lodi is Wine Country’s Best-Kept Secret

Lodi isn't just a secondary wine region; it’s the bedrock of California’s viticultural history. Built on six generations of family growers, it is the birthplace of LODI RULES, the country’s first third-party-certified sustainable winegrowing program. While it's famous for Zinfandel, the region boasts an incredible 135+ varietals, mirroring the diversity of the Rhône Valley, Spain and Italy.

Most surprisingly, Lodi is home to the world’s oldest Cinsault vines, planted in 1886 at the Bechthold Vineyard. "If you visit and don’t try Old Vine Zinfandel, did you even come to Lodi?" jokes Dare. "Like, we’ll still love you, but we’ll also gently question your life choices." For a modern taste of the region, visit Acquiesce Winery for stunning Rhône-style whites or Bokisch Vineyards, where the founders pioneered Iberian grapes in California. "There’s so much beauty, intention and heart in everything they create—thanks to the incredibly talented women behind the winemaking," says Dare. If you’re lucky enough to meet Gerardo at Anaya Wines, don’t miss their Tempranillo or the Nebbiolo—a vibrant California take on an Italian classic.

Where to Stay: From "Crown Jewels" to Charming Bungalows

Visit Lodi

For those looking for elevated hospitality, Appellation Lodi–Wine & Roses is the region's undisputed "crown jewel." Recently reimagined under the culinary guidance of legendary Chef Charlie Palmer, it blends modern luxury with a warm, welcoming spirit. "I may or may not be guilty of booking staycations just to relax, bed rot, and binge watch," says Dare. "It genuinely feels like an escape without ever leaving home."

If you prefer a more "neighborly" vibe, Lodi’s downtown area is filled with charming Airbnb bungalows. Staying here puts you within walking distance of tasting rooms, local boutiques, and coffee shops, allowing you to experience the town's small-town charm firsthand. It's the perfect way to feel like a local while being just a quick drive from the sprawling vineyard landscapes.

Lodi’s culinary scene is currently undergoing a massive evolution, led by chefs who are deeply rooted in the area's agricultural legacy. Pietro's Trattoria has been a pillar since 1985, recently moving into a massive new location at 282 Rocky Lane. "For anything to last 40 years in a community, you have to have the support of that community," says Murdaca. Be sure to order the Rosetta Arancini—a family recipe from Calabria—or the slow-braised oxtail over polenta.

For wood-fired goodness, Guantonio’s is a local favorite where Chef Nick Guantone brings bold personality to every dish. "His food has character, soul and that spark that makes you go, ‘Okay, this is something special happening in Lodi,’" notes Dare. If you're looking for world-class pastries, Ruby's Bakery—run by a couple who came from the iconic Tartine in San Francisco—is a non-negotiable morning stop.

Beyond the Bottle: Things to Do and Scenic Escapes

Visit Lodi

Lodi is surprisingly family-friendly, making it a playful alternative to crowded beaches or overbooked resorts. Lodi Lake and its Boathouse are the local go-to for kayaking, paddle boarding or wandering trails among the deer. "This is where life slows down," Dare says. "It’s the kind of place that reminds you how good it feels to just be outside, unhurried and fully present."

For a truly unique experience, visit Spenker Farm for "goat yoga" or their "Goodnight Goats" event, where you can literally read the baby goats to sleep. If you prefer a scenic drive, the gnarled, century-old vines of Jessie's Grove offer a perfect backdrop for a quiet afternoon. As Murdaca notes, "The climate and terroir are very European—it’s not pretentious, it just feels comfortable."

No trip to Lodi is complete without a stroll through the local boutiques. Mokabysarai Jewelry offers meaningful, handcrafted pieces that feel like future heirlooms, while Earth & Wares is a treasure trove of thoughtful gifts and cozy home decor.

When it comes to timing your visit, Lodi's festivals are legendary. Dare describes the town's community events as "Stars Hollow meets the Hallmark Channel." The Lodi Light Parade kicks off the holidays in December, while February's Wine & Chocolate Weekend (Feb 14-15, 2026) offers a romantic self-guided tour of 30+ wineries. Most excitingly, May 2026 marks the inaugural American Fare, an immersive tasting experience hosted by Chef Palmer that will celebrate the very best of Lodi’s growers and makers.

Olivia Culpo Shares Frightening Coyote Backyard Footage and the Hair Hack She Uses to Protect Her Dog

Mon, 03/09/2026 - 8:59am

Olivia Culpo isn't messing around when it comes to protecting her precious Goldendoodle, Oliver Sprinkles, especially after spotting coyotes in her backyard.

On Sunday, March 8, Culpo took to Instagram Stories to share photos from the hair salon, revealing that she had gathered her chopped-off locks to take home and use to repel coyotes.

"I asked if I could take the hair we cut to sprinkle along my fence line to scare away the coyotes. This is the level of insane dog mom I am but by the way, it works! The coyotes are everywhere and hungry," she wrote, sharing a small plastic bag with her hair in it.

The former Miss USA winner later shared a video of her sprinkling her hair in her backyard, stating, "Unfortunately for me they live IN my backyard."

View this post on Instagram

In fact, Culpo shared footage of a coyote right at her glass fence and peering into her backyard. "This video honestly still haunts me," she wrote, adding, "A cute but "hungry" coyote.... trying to eat my baby and during the day."

She also posted a video of a coyote in her backyard, showing that the animal had hopped her fence. Culpo shared that she happily read "all of your advice" from her fans, adding that she has "coyote vests and air horns" to protect Oliver. "There's no fence height or secret hair trick that can 100% guarntee yout dogs safety," she wrote.

Culpo now also has an infant, whom she must be extra careful to protect. The model welcomed her daughter, Colette Annalise McCaffery, with her husband, NFL player Christian McCaffrey, in July 2025.

In an Instagram post reflecting on the year she became a mom for the first time, Culpo shared, "2025: the year I became a mom 😭 This year my heart expanded in ways I never imagined and everything shifted .. my perspective, the way I show up, what I value, and the miracle of life itself. I am so grateful."

Jennifer Lopez Says She Was 'About to Give Up On It All' Following Her Third Divorce

Mon, 03/09/2026 - 8:58am

Divorce is always a challenge for those who experience it, with celebrities themselves certainly no exception.

Case in point with the mental and emotional fatigue Jennifer Lopez felt following her 2014 divorce from Marc Anthony, which led the celebrated singer/actress to claim that she was "about to give up on it all" while speaking onstage during a recent concert performance.

According to People magazine, the 56-year-old took to the stage at her All NightLas Vegas residency at The Colosseum inside Caesars Palace, openly discussing the burden of splitting from her third husband.

After admitting the split from Anthony was "actually a really tough time," Lopez went on to say she was in a very dark place following her divorce, most especially due to the fact that was suddenly a single mother struggling to care for twins Max and Emme.

“I was really about to give up on it all,” Lopez said. “I mean, I was a single mom with two 3-year-old twins.”

As she grappled with these newfound obstacles, the actress was able to better cope with the challenges thanks to some helpful advice from her mentor, the late writer Louise Hay.

“She said to me, ‘Jennifer, you’re a dancer, right?’” Lopez remembered. “I said, ‘Yes, I am.’ And she said, ‘When you’re learning a dance and you get the steps wrong, what do you do?’ I said, ‘I just keep going until I get the steps right.’ And she said, ‘That’s right Jennifer. Always keep dancing.’”

“And I wish the same for each and every one of you, that no matter what life throws at you, that you dance and you dance and you dance,” she said to the audience in attendance. “Again and again and again.”

Lopez echoed the sentiment during the second night of her Las Vegas residency back in December, saying that her divorce from Anthony had only helped her become a stronger dancer.

60 Years Later, Brian Wilson’s Most Emotional ‘Pet Sounds’ Song Revealed His ‘Feminine Side’

Mon, 03/09/2026 - 8:54am

60 years ago, Brian Wilson wrote one of his most romantic songs, "Caroline, No," a tune he admitted showed off his "feminine side."

"Caroline, No" was the last track of the Beach Boys' seminal LP, Pet Sounds. The song, written by Wilson and Tony Asher, reflects on a loss of innocent love.

Wilson's official Instagram shared his commentary about the Pet Sounds song. He said that "Caroline, No" was "my crowning achievement for a ballad, you know, the feminine side of me coming out once again."

He continued, "I enjoyed singing it, and I thought it was a very pretty melody, and I thought that it had a little Glenn Miller kind of feeling with the horns toward the end, a little Glenn Miller kind of a sound."
