America’s Got Talent attracts auditioners from all tracks of life and on tonight’s episode, it was 23-year-old Isaac Atkins from Lewiston, ME, who took leave from his posting in Honolulu as a sergeant in the United States Army to sing for judges Simon Cowell, Mel B, Howie Mandel and Sofia Vergara.

“I’ve jumped out of a plane at 1800 feet, and this is scarier than that,” Isaac confided in another contestant backstage at America’s Got Talent.

Once he took the stage, he was questioned by Mel B, and she kept him talking because she loved his voice.

“I am a sergeant in the United States Army. I am on leave right now. I took a few days off to come here. I have been in the Army for six years,” he told her.”

Then Simon asked, “Why did you decide to come on the show this year?”

“I sing in my car,” Isaac answered. “That’s basically my thing. I sing in my car, and I started posting about a year and a half ago. It started making its way around. My soldiers started seeing it and I’d come to work, and they’d be like, ‘I saw your TikTok. You sing this song.’  I’d be, ‘That’s not me, I don’t know what you’re talking about.’  They are actually the ones who urged me to come here and sing. I am really happy to be here.”

Then Mel B asked, “How long has singing been a passion of yours?”

And Isaac responded, “As long as I can remember. I grew up singing. My dad put me onto the oldies, Motown, all the greats like Sam Cooke, so I grew up singing in the car with my dad and my brother. It’s one of those things that has been my dream.”

Then Isaac performed Måneskin’s “Beggin’” and Mel B jumped to her feet as did the audience when he finished, and she said, “Isaac, let me tell you. You can sing.”

Sofia added, “What a voice. What a sexy voice you have.”

Then Mel B said, “Before anybody else can do this, I’m going to do this.” And she hit the Golden Buzzer, following which she went up on stage and hugged Isaac telling him, “You’ve got heart and that voice! My God!” Then she left the stage, saying, “Enjoy this moment. It’s all yours.” Then to the audience, she added, “Now that’s how you give a Golden Buzzer. You don’t wait for anybody.”

Meanwhile, Isaac picked some of the confetti off the stage as a souvenir of his Golden Buzzer as Simon asked, “How does that feel?”

Isaac said, “That feels amazing.”

Mel B added, “You’re brilliant with so much heart and soul. We will see you in the live shows. Go celebrate.”

America’s Got Talent airs Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. Streams next day on Peacock.

Hours after news broke that Jelly Roll had filed for divorce from Bunnie Xo, the singer shared an emotional post.

Jelly returned to Instagram on Tuesday, June 16, with a post about one of the causes closest to his heart—helping others rewrite their stories. 

In the emotional Reel, Jelly Roll shared footage from a recent concert where he recognized a familiar face in the crowd. "This is a cool story," he told the audience. "I've seen this young man. I went and spoke at a juvenile facility he was at. He was incarcerated."

The “Wind Ones” singer explained that he had met the fan years earlier. Now, he was standing in the front row at one of Jelly Roll's shows. "It looks like you're doing absolutely great, brother. It looks like you completely turned your life around."

After inviting the fan onstage for a hug, Jelly Roll addressed the crowd once more. "He's almost off house arrest. He's home doing good. Love you, brother. So happy for you." He then ended the moment with a laugh, telling him, "Now get out of here before you go to jail."

The country hitmaker explained the significance of the interaction in the caption. "I think this is the first time this has happened in my career," he wrote. "Every time I go and speak at a Juvenile or a Jail/Prison, the dream is to be able to see those people outside that building living good and fruitful lives." He continued, "I'm so honored to be able to do this for a living, I LOVE YALL."

The post marked Jelly's first since reports emerged that he and Bunnie had decided to end their marriage. According to TMZ, the singer filed for divorce in Tennessee in May, with sources describing the split as a "mutual decision" and "a private family matter."

And the split was the only thing on fans' minds, as made evident by the comments.

“I like how they both are posting....just not what we wanna know about,” one quipped.

A second shared, “I know it’s not our business.. but they both are posting like nothing has happened and I wanna know what happened!!!”

“And deleting her name from your bio… just made it real,” a third pointed out, noting the subtle change to the three-time Grammy winner’s profile.

The pair first met in 2015 and tied the knot in August 2016 before renewing their vows in 2023. Although they did not share biological children together, the couple had previously spoken about their IVF journey. Jelly Roll is also father to two children, Bailee Ann and Noah Buddy, from previous relationships.

For Widow’s Bay, every episode is a hook episode. Seriously. Each episode of this mystery-comedy hybrid, deeply rooted in 1970s and 1980shorrornostalgia, is a tautly crafted gem, flawless in its blend of belly laughs and jump scares, Stephen King-inspired dread and Parks and Recreation-style humor. It’s genius, and its near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes scoreproves it. But if we had to really home in on a hook episode, it would have to be Episode 4, “Beach Reads.” 

Allow us to set the scene: Town hall assistant Patricia, played brilliantly by Kate O’Flynn, decides to throw the “perfect” glamorous cocktail party to win over the island’s resident mean girls, who detest her and doubt her traumatic past. This means inviting the perfect crowd, serving the perfect punch, and, of course, curating the perfect playlist. Without giving anything away, Patricia’s night of “Sunset Cocktails” takes a turn for the demented. 

With the series streaming its finale tonight, its parent platform, Apple TV, decided to have a little fun. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the streamer released a massive Apple Music playlist called “Patricia’s Sunset Cocktails Playlist,” named after Patricia’s “perfect” party naturally. And though the post says the list is 300 tracks long, it’s actually more like 811.

Nearly 38 years after its release, the iconic Guns N' Roses single "Sweet Child O' Mine" is charting again on the Billboard Hard Rock Streaming Songs chart.

The song, which was released as the third single from the band's landmark debut album Appetite for Destruction in June 1988, is currently sitting at the No. 8 spot on the rock chart. The Hard Rock Streaming Songs chart tracks the ongoing streaming success of all songs within the genre. "Sweet Child O' Mine" is one of the oldest tracks to reside in the upper levels of the tally, attesting to its ability to withstand the test of time as an enduring hit.

"Sweet Child O' Mine" has enjoyed an incredible 315-week stay on the Hard Rock Streaming Songs chart, adding to its extensive Billboard resume. In total, the track has claimed the No. 1 spot on both the Hot 100 chart and the Hot Hard Rock Songs chart, while also securing a top-ten residency on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart—marking Guns N' Roses' most successful charting hit.

Jelly Roll's daughter Bailee AnnDeFord is speaking out about her dad's divorce.

On Monday, June 15, the country star stunned fans when it was revealed he filed for divorce from Bunnie XO after 10 years of marriage.

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, the singer filed for divorce in May in Tennessee, with sources noting that it was a “mutual decision by the two and a private family matter.”

On Tuesday, June 16, the 18-year-old took to TikTok to comment on the shocking breakup between her dad and stepmother for the first time.

“I am disgusted at how invested everyone is in a very clearly private family matter. It’s fkn crazy,” the teen wrote over a photo of herself in bed. “Go on somewhere yall. Worry ‘bout your house — not mine. I’m not speaking on it — yet.”

Jelly Roll and Bunnie met after she attended one of his concerts at Las Vegas’ Country Saloon in 2015. The couple married on August 31, 2016 in a Las Vegas courthouse after the country singer proposed on stage earlier that night. 

Jelly Roll and Bunnie renewed their vows at the same Las Vegas chapel on their seven-year anniversary in 2023.

The pair don’t share any biological children together, however, the two had been previously been open about their IVF journey. Jelly Roll shared Bailee with his ex Felicia Beckwith and son Noah Buddy with Melisa Ann Cowell.

The couple were open with fans about Jelly Roll's 10-month affair in the early years of their relationship, a mistake the singer called “one of the worst moments” of his life during an October 2025 episode of the Human School podcast, adding that he put “a lot of work to repair” their marriage after his infidelity.

Neither Jelly Roll or Bunnie XO have publicly commented on their divorce.

Sixpence None the Richer is asking fans for support as one of their longtime band members recently suffered a serious medical emergency.

Justin Cary, the beloved bassist for the '90s alternative rock band, suffered a stroke on Thursday, June 11, and is currently hospitalized in the ICU. The band's lead singer Leigh Nash delivered the news to fans via social media on Tuesday, June 16, while sharing a heartfelt post to express how much Cary means to the group.

Uploading a photo montage to Instagram on Tuesday, Nash wrote, "Our brother of 30 years (and bassist), Justin had a stroke Thursday night. His wonderful wife Linda has kept us updated everyday and night too. She is lovely, delicate and unfathomably heartbroken."

"We love our brother so so much. Words don’t cover it," the emotional post continued. "I know so many out there love him too. Saw his brilliance, second to NONE professionalism, class, humor (oh my lord the humor) wit, tough as an old boot as they say. Many more adjectives to describe him."

"Please pray for Justin and Linda. @bakerbassplayer" Nash added, while sharing a GoFundMe link for anyone who "feels led to help Linda navigate the waters ahead."

Cary has been with the band since 1997 when he replaced the group's former bassist, J.J. Plasencio, joining the group just before they released their self-titled breakthrough album containing their hit single, "Kiss Me."

According to the GoFundMe page in Cary's honor, the musician is currently receiving "wonderful care" in the ICU at Albany Medical Center after undergoing two surgeries.

"The road ahead is uncertain and scary so if you are so inclined to pray, send good vibes and healing energy it would be truly appreciated," the fundraiser page states. "We wanted to put together a fundraiser to help them during this time and show them love and support."

While everyone was busy talking about the Josh Hokit and Michelle Obama UFC Freedom 250 incident, no one seemed to notice Donald Trump Jr. slyly shade former PresidentJoe Biden. That is, other than a few eagle-eyed social media users.

On Saturday, President Donald Trump’s eldest son posted a series of family photos on Instagram. While he stacked the carousel with playful pics featuring four of his five kiddos (and new wife Bettina Trump) enjoying the pre-fight festivities, Don Jr. also quietly slipped in a dig against the former POTUS. 

The post starts with a sweet snapshot of the whole gang in front of “the Claw.” If you move on to the next pic, you’ll see Trump Jr.’s two youngest children (13-year-old Spencer and 12-year-old Chloe) at the White House, smiling in front of an ornate framed photo and two bronze plaques. Nothing major to see here, right? Wrong.

Even though on the surface it looks like any other pic a parent might snap of their kids, this one has a special meaning. Zoom in, and you’ll see that they’re standing with their grandfather’s famous “Presidential Walk of Fame” Joe Biden autopen picture and plaques. 

Most of the comments on Trump Jr.’s post applauded the current First Family, and one even said, “Love this portrait of Biden's autopen.” But others had a very different view. 

Other commenters added, “So rude and disrespectful to President Joe Biden,” and, “Joe Biden was not the worst POTUS in American history, and your father is foolish to believe it.”

Of course, this isn’t the first time that Trump’s son has thrown shade at the Bidens—or vice versa. Back in April, Hunter Biden announced that YouTuber Andrew Callaghan wanted to set up a cage match between the two families, posting on Instagram, “I think he’s trying to organize a cage match, me versus Eric and Don Jr. Um, I told him I’d do it. 100% in if he can pull it off.” 

While a cage match did happen at the White House (UFC Freedom 250), it wasn't between the Bidens and the Trumps. Eric Trump and Don. Jr. did not accept Hunter’s invitation to duke it out in the ring. Of course, that hasn't stopped the war of words or, in this case, social media shade.

Did Amanda Batula mistake friendship for love with West Wilson? Based on her conversation with Lindsay Hubbard on Summer House: The Aftermath, it seems West may have some explaining to do if he hopes to maintain a long-term relationship with Amanda.

However, with reports surfacing that West will not return for Summer House Season 11, the discussion takes on a different meaning. Could the conversation have been designed to help pave the way for Amanda's future on the show?

The episode featured several notable conversations, but Amanda and Lindsay's stood out as the most significant. More than revisiting Amanda's relationship with West, it appeared to reestablish Amanda's place within the group's core dynamics—potentially positioning her for a continuing role moving forward.

Some of the most powerful moments came when Lindsay pointed out that West had been telling the group Amanda was the one who pursued him, while her understanding was that the opposite was true. Amanda ultimately admitted that after spending years in an unhappy marriage, her friendship with West made her feel young again.

"He brought out a side of me that I never thought I'd see again," she said. "This person who wanted to have fun ... loved life again."

Amanda went on to explain that she no longer felt lost and alone, making it difficult to think "rationally or logically" while the affair was unfolding. She also acknowledged that she wasn't considering how her actions would affect her former close friend, Ciara Miller, because she was overwhelmed by the feeling that someone cared about her again.

Meanwhile, West had his own sit-down with Amanda's estranged husband, Kyle Cooke. While West admitted that he loved Amanda, he was far less definitive about their future, instead focusing on his deception of Meija Moreno. Meija believed she and West were in an exclusive relationship, and she and West even hooked up while he was dating Amanda—a fact Amanda herself acknowledged during her conversation with Lindsay.

Meija also sat down with Ciara, revealing that she remains in contact with West, suggesting she may not be fully ready to walk away from their relationship.

So where does that leave the cast? With West seemingly out of the picture, fan reaction appears mixed. While some viewers are ready to forgive Amanda, others have made it clear they'd prefer Summer House move forward without either half of the controversial romance.

Even before The Aftermath aired, discussion about a possible Amanda redemption arc was already underway after Lindsay shared on Threads that she believed Amanda had been manipulated by West. The response was varied.

"Amanda possibly returning to TV doesn’t mean she’s getting a 'redemption' season. It’s kinda odd to see longtime Bravo viewers (and people who cover Bravo and have seen a sizable increase in engagement since Scamanda) actively root against conflict and continuing a storyline that’s killing in the ratings," one fan wrote on Threads.

Others weren't buying the idea at all.

"Is this the beginning of the Amanda redemption arc no one wants? She's a full blown adult that purposely bread crumbed the world, that's not someone being manipulated," another commenter wrote.

Some fans also pointed to what happened on Vanderpump Rules after the fallout from the Tom Sandoval and Ariana Madix scandal. Once the entire cast reunited for another season, many cast members no longer wanted to film together, and viewers felt the show's chemistry suffered as a result.

"We are BEGGING you — please learn from VPR’s mistake and do not try to force an Amanda redemption arc on us!! For 10 years we’ve watched you all actually be friends and have fun. That is a Bravo unicorn! Amanda blew that up just as much as West did — and the reunion was her chance to show remorse. She had ZERO. Summer should be fun. Amanda… not fun. West AND Amanda. Door. Bye," one person wrote.

If The Aftermath was intended to help rehabilitate Amanda's image ahead of Season 11, the jury is still out on whether it worked.

Love Island USA host Ariana Madix once again made her appearance at the villa for a surprising recoupling. While the dynamics in the villa were shaken up once again, the power shifted back to America's hands as the second vote of the season opened up.

Allow me to set the stage for "Time Out Of Mind,"Bob Dylan's 1997 "Album of the Year" winner that marked a return to wide-spread critical acclaim for the now 85 year old musician.

Smoke. Shadow. Darkness.

A man stands with a guitar, his face barely peeking into a sliver of cold, lifeless light. He looks familiar. He's a man we all knew well, but he's older now. His voice is cracked, withered, and weary. He sings of regret, death, love, and heartbreak. A career, a life, and a man that have been beaten by the years and yet... he still stands.

The album marks a stark sonic shift for Dylan that he hasn't fully deviated from yet in my eyes, and that is this Americana pastiche soaked in a classic blues sheen that has permeated the rest of his work from here on out. Dylan as this old, weathered blues man that we see today takes his first step forward here, and it's one of my absolute favorite albums from him.

"Time Out Of Mind" features Dylan's darkest sound, darkest lyrics, and darkest overall mood. It's a story of age revealing inspiration, and a legend who just keeps improving.

How a Near-Death Experience Shaped Time Out of Mind

Dylan was in a weird spot around the time this album released. He hadn't put out a collection of original material since 1990's "Under the Red Sky," which was received pretty poorly. The 80s were a very strange decade for Dylan musically as it was for a lot of legacy acts that went through that decade.

Adopting the sound and styling of the time hadn't been kind to Dylan, and creatively he was in a constant state of flux. Whether that was the back half of his born again trilogy of albums, his success with The Traveling Wilburys, or the little shades of Dylan's songwriting genius that shone through on parts of "Infidels" and "Oh Mercy," he was never really staying in a consistent creative space.

The general sentiment going into the release of "Time Out Of Mind" was that of an aging star trudging through his later years of musicianship. Despite the great handful of songs and moments Dylan produced through the 80s, there was a sense that he just didn't have it in him anymore to the general public.

Upon the album's release, it was a massive success, being called his "come back album," by the general population. Leading up to the release of the album, Dylan was seriously ill from a bout with acute pulmonary histoplasmosis, which could have been fatal. Despite the album being completed before this brush with death, the sense of impending mortality has tinged the record forever, with many seeing it as an album about death, despite it being so much more.

The next year, the album would walk away with three Grammys, including Album of the Year. It remains one of Dylan's most acclaimed records and one of his most timeless musical accomplishments.

The Album Features Underrated Greatness

I love this record, perhaps a lot more than a lot of other Dylan heads. It's a top 5 album of his for me, and I think the reason for that is Dylan's venture into this really morose tone. His writing is much more depressive and dark than it typically is. It's the album where he successfully switched from aging rockstar to wise old poet, and the songs really reflect that.

The album opens with "Love Sick," this really tired and fed up song that I have always felt is about the pains of loving a world that is both disappointing you as well as slipping away from you. The 90s were such a transitory period in history, and I think this album is really emblematic of this great event horizon we were coming up on with the advent of the internet and modern tech.

From then on we get some the most forlorn music Dylan has ever written with songs like "Standing in the Doorway," "Tryin' to Get to Heaven," and "Not Dark Yet." These songs are all mixed up in this melting pot of death, heartbreak, and almost apocalyptic imagery. For many people I can see the record being too steeped in sorrow, but for me I think it's a special collection of music that captures a really specific moment in time.

The album closes with one of Dylan's most underrated songs in my opinion, and that is "Highlands." It's a sweeping behemoth of a song, clocking in sixteen minutes and thirty-one seconds, and it follows Dylan as this wayward traveler through the world is occupying, and all the woes and pains that come with that. He reckons with his age, his career, his life, and how the greater universe around him doesn't seem to make sense anymore. Throughout these laments of a world gone by, there are small glimmers of beauty as Dylan sings about how "his heart is in the highlands," a beautiful sort of figurative afterlife where all is okay. It's a phenomenal piece of writing, and harkens back to a song like "Desolation Row" in the way that it wields a strange yet understood chaos.

Dylan proved that he was an eternal songwriter, and that these glimpses of glory over the previous decade were no accident. "Time Out Of Mind" is a special and beautiful record, and it's one of my absolute favorites.

Concerts can be a pretty impersonal experience. With the massive amount of people in attendance as well as the divide of the performer and the crowd, there's not a lot of genuine connection that can be made. That doesn't mean that James Hetfield of Metallica isn't going to try, though.

Metallica is currently on tour in what has become a bit of a summer tradition for them. The band has settled into the later years of their career rather nicely as a solid touring band with a ton of stops worldwide. I started covering their annual touring last year, and I've come to really see how much appreciate the band, and especially Hetfield, have for their fans in attendance.

Recently, a video from one of their concerts has highlighted the kindness Hetfield shows toward his audience, with this wonderful little "conversation" he had with the audience.

Immediately, I was super struck by him giving a nice warm shoutout to the opening acts. As an opening band, you can oftentimes get pretty shafted by the show and the headlining audience, so it's a nice thing for Hetfield to give those groups a shoutout. To be fair, not everyone's opening act is Pantera, but still.

Hetfield went on to even personally thank the fan filming the video, and engage in a little back and forth with him. Hetfield's decision to involve the crowd is such a great one in my eyes, as it makes every show unique. I often find myself gravitating to the less elaborate, more spontaneous concerts, as the music and the community surrounding it tend to take the focus.

After years of uncertainty, Edguy is officially making its return.

The German power metal favorites have announced their first live performance in nearly a decade, confirming they'll reunite for a special show next summer. The announcement marks the band's first confirmed concert since wrapping up its last tour in 2017 and ends years of speculation surrounding its future.

The performance will take place in their hometown of Fulda, where Edguy will make its long-awaited return to the stage on June 25, 2027.

"Some stories deserve a final chapter," the band shared in a cryptic Instagram post. "Let's write ours together."

Founded in Germany in 1992, Edguy emerged as one of the defining bands of the European power metal movement during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Albums including Vain Glory Opera, Theater of Salvation, Mandrake and Hellfire Club helped establish the band as a favorite among fans of melodic and symphonic metal.

The group's last studio album, Space Police: Defenders of the Crown, arrived in 2014, followed by the 25th anniversary compilation, Monuments, in 2017.

In the years that followed, frontman Tobias Sammet focused almost exclusively on his other successful project, Avantasia, while Edguy quietly entered an extended hiatus.

"I have been working on a new Avantasia record for a while now, and not on a new Edguy record because that’s what feels right to me," Sammet told Brave Words. He also described the process of making Space Police as "extremely exhausting," leaving Edguy's future uncertain.

That uncertainty only deepened earlier this year when Sammet suggested there were no immediate plans for an Edguy reunion, leading many fans to wonder whether the band would ever return.

Now, those questions have finally been answered.

While only one show has been announced so far, the reunion represents Edguy's first concert in 10 years and gives fans hope that more performances could follow.

For a band that helped define modern European power metal, June 2027 promises to be more than just another concert; it marks the return of one of the genre's most beloved acts after nearly a decade away from the stage.

One of the most iconic bands of the 1970s is currently having a major resurgence on the music charts.

Over 40 years after releasing some of their biggest hits, Earth, Wind & Fire has returned to the Billboard 200 with a decades-old compilation album.

According to new Billboard chart standings, Earth, Wind & Fire's 1998 Greatest Hits record has officially re-entered the albums chart, coming in at No. 146 for the week dated June 20. The album now has a total of 42 weeks spent on the chart since its release.

The band put out Greatest Hits in November 1998, 20 years after dropping their first compilation album, The Best of Earth, Wind & FireVol. 1, in 1978. The 1998 record features some of the same tracks originally included on their first collection of biggest hits, including '70s fan-favorites like "September" and "Shining Star," plus other popular tracks that came out after 1978, like 1981's "Let's Groove."

Earth, Wind & Fire had two albums hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200: That's the Way of the World and Gratitude, both of which were released in 1975 and spent three consecutive weeks at the top of the albums chart. The Greatest Hits album debuted on the Billboard 200 in 2011 at No. 116, before later reaching its peak position at No. 40 in 2013.

The album features a total of 17 songs, including all seven of the group's Top 10 hits on the Hot 100. The only song to ever reach the No. 1 position on the Hot 100 is the 1975 track "Shining Star," which is aptly placed as the first track on their Greatest Hits album.

PattonOswalt is ready to reprise his role as Remy in a Ratatouille sequel… on one condition.

This month, Pixar is releasing Toy Story 5, with Incredibles 3, Monsters, Inc. 3, and Coco 2 all in development.

The animation studio has yet to franchise Ratatouille. The 2007 hit film was critically acclaimed and a financial success, making $623 million worldwide and winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Oswalt recently spoke about the potential of a sequel on the Obsessed podcast. 

“Obviously, I’d love if there was a Ratatouille sequel,” the actor and comedian revealed.

Adding, “I want the sequel to be not the same type of movie, but that same energy that Terminator 2 or Aliens had, which is, there’s an expansion of the story that we that we actually need to tell… This isn’t just a money grab. And yes, by the way, we love the money, and we’re gonna grab it, but we’re gonna get the money by telling an amazing story with whole new dimensions that we didn’t even know beforehand.”

But, Oswalt doesn’t want to be the one driving the story. He emphasized the importance of bringing back the original Ratatouille director, BradBird.

“I don’t wanna be the guy going, ‘Hey, what if Remy did this?’ I want it to be one of those ideas that happens that you cannot get away from,” he shared. “I don’t want it to come from us going, ‘All right, let’s get out the legal pads and let’s break down a sequel.’ There are a lot of movies where that’s how they’re done, and it always feels inorganic.”

Ultimately, Oswalt is waiting to welcome a new Ratatouille film if the idea feels genuine.

“There was never gonna be an Incredibles sequel until he thought, ‘Wait a minute. There is a story to tell,’” Oswalt shared about Bird. “So if he gets an idea, that’s the one I wanna do.”

While some of the biggest hits in music history have been on the long side (like "American Pie" and "Hey Jude"), other songs to climb the charts over the years have been surprisingly brief. In fact, back in 1964, a classic folk track from a pioneering all-female group made history by becoming the shortest single to ever hit the Billboard Hot 100.

Originally written by singer-songwriter Malvina Reynolds in 1962, "Little Boxes" was first recorded by folk icon Pete Seeger and went on to become his only charting single, peaking at #70 in 1964. Seeger's version, which clocks in at just around 2 minutes, was pretty short to begin with. But that same year, another act would release their own take on "Little Boxes" — and that one was even shorter.

Hailing from Los Angeles, California, The Womenfolk were a unique group in the mid-60s, simply because (as the band's name implies), all the members were women. Though they weren't incredibly commercially successful, their cover of "Little Boxes" managed to land at #83 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964, making history in the process: At just 1 minute and 1 second long, the track became the shortest single to hit the charts...and it held that honor for decades.

To be fair, "Little Boxes" doesn't have a ton of lyrics, so it makes sense that The Womenfolk's cover would be short. In just a few lines, the satirical anthem delivers a scathing sendup of suburbia in a surprisingly upbeat way:

Little boxes on the hillside / Little boxes made of ticky tacky / Little boxes on the hillside / Little boxes all the same / There’s a green one, then a pink one, and a blue one and a yellow one / And they’re all made out of ticky tacky and they all look just the same

(If you're one of the many people who've always casually wondered what "ticky tacky" was but never bothered to find out, it was a term for low-quality materials used to build houses.)

According to Reynolds' daughter, Nancy Schimmel, her mother got the idea for the song when she drove past a row of houses like those described in the song. But since Reynolds was already a singer-songwriter, why didn't she just record the song herself? As Schimmel explained in a 2020 interview with Berkeley Podcast for Music, misogyny in the music industry was mostly to blame.

"[Seeger] had been performing since the ’30s," Schimmel said. "He was a performer. He wasn’t really a songwriter. But there was a prejudice. It was definitely misogyny, but it was particularly against someone of her age. I mean, a man her age would have been okay. But for a woman of her age to try to get into music, she had started out singing folk songs, but as soon as she started writing her own songs, she sang them. And when she started touring in the ’60s, she never sang anything but her own songs."

"She started before there was the term 'singer-songwriter,'" Schimmel added.

"So, you know, she was a woman singing songs she wrote. She has been referred to, and in fact was referred to in one of her obituaries, as a blues singer. She had written a couple blues and she’d written some bluesy songs like 'No Hole in My Head.' But I think maybe it’s because of her age. It’s okay for women blues singers to be older, to be middle-aged. But it’s not OK for women pop singers to be older. They have to be young. And she was as much influenced by the pop music of her time as she was by the folk music. She’d heard both."

While Reynolds might not be a household name today, "Little Boxes" is an impressive legacy — even if it's no longer the shortest song ever to hit the charts. In 2025,Jack Black broke the record for shortest tune ever to make the Billboard Hot 100 with "Steve's Lava Chicken" from the Minecraft movie, lasting just 34 seconds, per NPR.

Fifty-five years ago, the legendary '70s heavy rock band Led Zeppelin released "Black Dog," a song that became a breakthrough radio hit despite never quite capturing the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100.

Released in the U.S. on December 2, 1971 as a single from their landmark fourth studio album Led Zeppelin IV, "Black Dog" quickly became a fan favorite. Upon its release, it entered the Billboard Hot 100, climbing up the chart until it peaked at No. 15 in February 1972. In total, the track spent 12 weeks on the chart.

"Black Dog" originally experienced high listener demand due to its immediate popularity on the airwaves. Because Led Zeppelin rarely released commercial singles in their home country, the song was initially spun by American disc jockeys directly from the album.

Following its U.S. commercial release, the song became a staple on major rock radio stations like WMMR in Philadelphia, KSJO and KOME in the San Francisco Bay Area and WNEW-FM in New York, with many DJs holding an affinity for its high-energy appeal and iconic instrumentation.

Produced by the band's lead guitarist, Jimmy Page, through Atlantic Records, "Black Dog" is most notable for its legendary guitar riff. The riff, written by bassist John Paul Jones while on a train, opens the song with a bang, instantly engaging listeners with its gritty, rhythmically complex melody. The guitar lick repeats throughout the duration of the track, lacing the heavy instrumentation with its earworm quality.

Written by Robert Plant, Page and Jones, "Black Dog" is—contrary to its title—not at all about dogs. The song explores the intoxicating desire to chase a woman's love, utilizing autobiographical lyricism about a passionate night Plant spent with an unexpected partner.

The track's title was originally a casual placeholder named after a black labrador that would hang out on the Headley Grange studio grounds during recording. After a while, the title ended up sticking as the iconic name we know today.

Over five decades after its release, "Black Dog" continues to resonate with audiences. In the digital era, the song perseveres on streaming platforms, racking up over 490 million streams on Spotify alone—a testament to the track's unique enduring quality.
