Oncologists Say This Popular Air Fryer Mistake Could Increase Cancer Risk

Sat, 03/28/2026 - 1:25pm

Our dietary choices don't just benefit our hearts or lower our risks of Type 2 diabetes. They can also help protect us against cancer. For instance, a Mediterranean diet (lots of fruits, veggies, whole grains and lean/plant-based protein) is linked to a lower chance of developing most cancers and may even help survivors stay in remission.

You may take all of the above in a heartbeat. Yet, oncologists stress that what you eat is only a portion of the way you can use diet to decrease your cancer odds. How the food is prepared also matters.

"Many of the most powerful anti-cancer compounds in plants—certain vitamins and phytochemicals—are delicate," says Dr. Andrew Pecora, MD, the co-division chief of the Skin and Sarcoma Service at Hackensack Meridian John Theurer Cancer Center. "They can be destroyed by heat or can leach out into cooking water."

Dr. Pecora shares that vitamin C and many B vitamins are water-soluble and sensitive to heat.

"If you boil broccoli, a significant portion of these vitamins will end up in the water, which most people then pour down the drain," he tells Parade. "Similarly, a powerful compound in broccoli called sulforaphane is only formed when an enzyme is activated by chopping or chewing. High heat can destroy this enzyme, preventing the beneficial compound from ever being created."

Some cooking methods, like air frying, are considered "healthier"—and they can be.

"In many ways, air frying is indeed a healthy alternative to other forms of preparation, such as deep frying in oil, but it too has caveats," states Dr. Adeel Khan, MD, MPH, MS,a hematologist/oncologist and epidemiologist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

One of those caveats is that it doesn't make a favorite cooking method "safe." Here's why oncologists say this popular air fryer mistake could increase your cancer risk.

This Popular Air Fryer Mistake Could Increase Cancer Risk, Oncologists Warn

Oncologists know this one may burn, but over-crisping food in an air fryer can raise cancer risk.

"Over-crisping, or cooking foods until they are very dark or burnt, can lead to the formation of compounds such as acrylamide and heterocyclic amines  (HCAs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocompounds (PCAHs)," states Dr. Brian Helfand, MD, Ph.D., a urologic oncologist and the division chief of urology at Endeavor Health. "These compounds have been linked in laboratory studies to DNA damage and increased cancer risk with long-term, high exposure."

Other oncologists agree. To be clear, scientists and oncologists don't know everything about the risks of over-crisped (or charred) foods. However, they are learning more and don't recommend people go out of their way to intentionally over-crisp food in an air fryer (and then eat it).

"At the cellular level, the mechanisms by which HCAs, PAHs, acrylamide, Advanced Glycation End-products (AGEs) and other formed compounds cause injury are still being actively researched," Dr. Khan says. "What is known is that they can biochemically interfere with enzymatic pathways, lead to the formation of injurious metabolites, increase inflammatory cascades and cause DNA damage leading to mutations."

And, therefore, potentially increase cancer risks. Dr. Khan again stresses that even the research we do have on these compounds and cancer risk isn't always straightforward. For instance, he (and the American Cancer Society) point to mixed data on acrylamide's link to cancer.

"Other compounds like PAHs and HCAs have a much more established link as carcinogens, specifically toward colorectal, breast, prostate and pancreatic cancers," he shares.

These compounds are more common in overdone (including over-crisped) animal-based proteins, like chicken, red meat or fish.

Why Oncologists Don’t Want You To Panic if You’ve Over-Crisped Food in an Air Fryer

You may feel queasy after learning that over-crisping food in the air fryer can increase your cancer risk. But that's not oncologists' goal in sharing this information.

"There is no need for alarm if you have been doing all the right things and unknowingly have been over-crisping your vegetables," Dr. Helfand says. "Cancer risk is influenced by long-term patterns, not occasional exposures. Balance is key."

Also, you may have netted some anti-cancer nutrients.

"Vegetables remain strongly protective due to fiber, antioxidants and phytochemicals," Dr. Helfand states. "The key is to avoid frequent charring and aim for gentler cooking methods going forward."

Dr. Khan shares similar sentiments and points out that there's no known "dose" of over-crisped food that is safe or unsafe if you're focusing on lowering cancer risk. Generally, he says it's OK and "to some degree it is unavoidable" to eat over-crisped food from time to time. He suggests reducing your intake of these foods as much as you can, though.

How To Know if Something Is Over-Crisped

Use your common sense(s)! Dr. Pecora says over-crisped food will look, smell and taste a certain way. "Visually, there is a clear progression from properly cooked to dangerously charred," he says.

The goal is golden to deep brown. "This color is typically the result of the Maillard reaction, a chemical reaction between amino acids and reducing sugars that gives browned food its desirable flavor and aroma," he explains. "Think of a perfectly baked bread crust or a golden-brown roasted potato."

Meanwhile, widespread, black, charred or ashy food is in what Dr. Pecora describes as the "danger zone" (and over-crisped).

"When food is truly over-crisped or burnt, it will have significant black areas," he adds.

You can also use the smell or taste test. "That acrid smell is your olfactory system warning you of combustion," Dr. Pecora says. "It's the smell of carbon and the release of volatile compounds that you want to avoid ingesting."

Over-crisped foods have a bitter taste, which is caused by chemical compounds that may increase cancer risk. Dr. Pecora says the taste is a natural defense mechanism.

"Many toxic and poisonous compounds in nature are bitter, and our taste buds have evolved to send a strong 'do not eat' signal when they detect it," he says.

Dr. Khan shares that it's best to avoid something that is completely burned. But you may not have to go that far. "You can simply trim off the heavily charred portions," Dr. Helfand states

What To Do Instead

Over-crisping may be off the table (or only invited once in a blue moon). However, Dr. Pecora says other cooking methods won't raise your cancer risk, including:

  • Braising, a moist-heat cooking method that involves searing in a hot pot, adding liquid (like broth or water) and reducing the heat for a long, slow cook.
  • Stewing, which is a similar process to braising, but the food is normally cut into smaller pieces and fully submerged in your liquid of choice.
  • Steaming, a "pure, gentle" cooking method that gets heat from water vapor
  • Sous-Vide (with a "touch-sear"), a method that involves putting food in a sealed bag and cooking it in a highly regulated water bath, where it can stay for a long time without over-crisping.

Remember, oncologists emphasize that it's not about spiraling if over-crisping has been your go-to air fryer method. It's about flexing your creative methods so you can change course and lower your cancer odds moving forward.

How Prince William and Kate Middleton Are Spending Spring Break With Their Kids

Sat, 03/28/2026 - 1:14pm

Prince William and Kate Middleton are likely preparing for a well-deserved break.

The Prince and Princess of Wales are known to take a step back from their public duties around the Easter holiday to enjoy time with their three kids, Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7, while they’re on school break.

The siblings attend Lambrook School near their home in Windsor, which will be on break until April 22, per People.

William, 43, and Kate, 44, consider this sacred time with their young ones, and have even skipped Easter with the royal family the past two years to celebrate privately. That doesn’t mean they don’t go all out for the fun holiday. During the first-ever full royal engagement via video call amid the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, William and Kate divulged that their children celebrated Easter with an egg hunt. While the future king assured “a lot of chocolate” would be eaten, Kate playfully quipped that he was the one who “[kept] eating it.”

BRACKNELL, ENGLAND - SEPTEMBER 07: Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis (C), accompanied by their parents the Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, arrive for a settling in afternoon at Lambrook School, near Ascot on September 7, 2022 in Bracknell, England. Although the palace hasn’t released any official details of the family’s plans, William and Kate are likely to take a break from their busy schedules. Over the past couple of weeks, the couple hosted the Nigerian state visit and attended the new Archbishop of Canterbury's installation mass. In years past, the family used the time for fun getaways.

William and Kate took their kids on a ski trip to the French Alps during their 2025 spring break. The family is also known to take some quiet time at their country home of Anmer Hall in Norfolk during school breaks, where they enjoy plenty of time outdoors.

Kate opened up about motherhood and the importance of creating these memories while appearing on the “Happy Mum, Happy Baby” podcast in 2020. The Princess of Wales is dedicated to getting outside and embracing messiness.

“I remember that from my childhood, doing the simple things, going for a walk together, and that’s really what I try and do with my children as well because it totally strips away all the complications, all the pressures,” she explained. “As a parent, I think these experiences as well mean so much to children and the world that they’re in, which is a real adventure for them at that age.”

RELATED: Inside Princess Charlotte's Sweet Bedroom

Kate reflected on what she wants her own kids to remember about their childhood, and she hopes their memories are sweet and filled with wonder.

“Is it that I’m sitting down trying to do their maths and spelling homework over the weekend? Or is it the fact that we’ve gone out and lit a bonfire and sat around trying to cook sausages that hasn’t worked because it’s too wet?” she continued. “That’s what I would want them to remember, those moments with me as a mother, but also the family going to the beach, getting soaking wet, filling our boots full of water, those are what I would want them to remember. Not a stressful household where you’re trying to do everything and not really succeeding at one thing.”

Jill Duggar Thanks Fans Amid 'Time of Heartbreak' Following Brother Joseph's Arrest

Sat, 03/28/2026 - 12:53pm

Jill Duggar is expressing gratitude to her supporters following her brother's arrest for child molestation.

Taking to Instagram, the mom-of-three posted a sweet photo of her sons Israel, Freddy, and Samuel, and husband Derick Dillard, on the beach.

View this post on Instagram

"So thankful for some extra family time at the beach over spring break," she captioned the photo. "God knew this week away was exactly what we’d need when we planned it months ago. Thank y’all for the love and prayers during this difficult time of heartbreak and continued processing."

The post comes just 10 days after her younger brother Joseph was arrested and charged with lewd and lascivious molestation of a victim less than 12 years old and lewd and lascivious behavior conducted by a person 18 years or older.

Following news of the arrest, Jill and Dillard released a statement on their website.

“We were shocked yesterday evening to learn of Jill’s brother (Joseph Duggar’s) arrest,” the statement began. “We first learned of anything related to his charges yesterday via a text from a friend who messaged us about the recent media reports of Joseph’s arrest and his alleged confession to molesting a juvenile female in 2020. We are shocked and heartbroken.”

“We strongly condemn abuse. We support the rule of law and hope that justice will be achieved,” the statement continued. “Our hearts go out to the innocent juvenile victim of this unspeakable crime and her family. We pray God gives her strength, comfort and hope, and that she is able to get all the help and support she needs and deserves in the days ahead.”

The statement also mentioned Joseph's wife, Kendra, and the couple's four children. Kendra, who was also arrested two days after her husband, was charged with four counts of endangering the welfare of a minor in the second degree and four counts of false imprisonment in the second degree, was in custody for a short amount of time on March 20. She was released on bond and was brought to a private residence, People reported.

On Friday, audio of a phone call between Joseph and Kendra, obtained by People, captured the 31-year-old detailing his conditions in solitary confinement while he awaits extradition from Arkansas to Florida.

Joseph, along with his siblings, became famous on his family's reality show 19 Kids and Counting which aired from 2008-2015 on TLC. The show, which focused on the large family's conservative values and daily life, also led to multiple spin-off series and specials, including Jill's wedding, and life after the 2021 conviction of the family's eldest brother, Josh, who was arrested for receiving and possessing child pornography. He's currently in jail in Texas with a release set for 2032.

‘Virgin River’ Star Sends Message to Fans After Unexpected Exit

Sat, 03/28/2026 - 12:32pm

Warning: this article contains spoilers from Virgin River Season 7.

It’s been a couple of weeks since news broke that Virgin River was losing two long-time cast members ahead of Season 8 filming.

Marco Grazzini (Mike) and Lauren Hammersley (Charmaine) have wrapped their Virgin River run, for now, after Season 7. The good news is that the door is open for the characters to return.

However, for the actors, it’s time to move on to the next chapter. Grazzini addressed his exit, admitting he plans to focus on family time while pursuing new acting roles.

The other day, Grazzini took to social media to send a special message to all of those involved with Virgin Rivers over the past few years.

“First of all, if you haven't watched any of season seven or any of the previous seasons, you can go and do that on Netflix. Having said that, spoiler alert, Mike, AKA me, is not coming back for season eight. So, I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to Netflix. Thank you to everyone who's ever been involved with Virgin River, both in front of and behind the camera. I'll miss you and thank you,” he expressed.

Grazzini then took a moment to speak to fans directly, because if it weren’t for them, then Virgin Riverwould not have had the major success it has had.

“A huge, huge, huge thank you to the fan base across the world. You guys are so, so passionate and so loving and so kind, and are truly what makes the show so special. So from the bottom of my heart, thank you,” the actor stated.

View this post on Instagram

Some of Grazzini’s former Virgin River co-stars popped up in the comments to show him some love, including his former on-screen love, Zibby Allen (Brie).

“Love you ❤️,” she wrote, keeping it simple.

Ben Hollingsworth (Brady) had more of a message for Grazzini. “Love you brotha’ - you’re such a class act and it was an absolute pleasure and a joy to work with you. It started 20 years ago 🤯 and it’s not anywhere close to being done yet. I’ll see u down the road on another one but I’ll always be a phone call away for you. Much love my man. #bdaypalsforlife.”

This isn’t the only time Hollingsworth had sweet words for his former co-star. Hollingsworth broke his silence on Grazzini’s Virgin River exit recently to give mad props to his pal.

Kai Bradbury (Denny) told Grazzini, “Until next time,” and Alexandra Breckenridge (Mel) left several emojis to show her love for the actor.

It’s the end of an era for Grazzini, but he’s grateful for those who've supported him along the way on his Virgin River journey.

Former Child Star Ranked Best Transformation of All Time

Sat, 03/28/2026 - 12:23pm

Whether it’s shedding their Mouseketeer image for more mature pastures, or pivoting from geek chic to intellectual cool, successful celebrity reinvention in the public eye takes guts, timing, and a little bit of luck.

Men’s Journal recently explored the topic, highlighting “five actors who turned awkward starts into A-list artistry,” and we have to say, yeah, these track.

🎬 SIGN UP for Parade’s Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬

The publication’s list starts with Jesse Plemons, 37, whose awkward phase was captured in several small TV and film roles, including a bit part on Varsity Blues in 1999. His big break came with Peter Berg’s Friday Night Lights, a sports drama showcasing football as life in the South. Plemons played Landry Clarke, the backup quarterback’s dorky best friend. His acting chops, however, were anything but.

Producers took note, and Plemons began landing big-time roles on both TV -- Breaking Bad, Fargo -- and in film -- The Irishman, The Power of the Dog, Bugonia. The guy is an Oscar magnet now. Not to mention married to one of the industry’s most talented actresses, KirstenDunst

Fourth on MJ’s list is Barry Keoghan (pronounced “key-O-gin”). Keoghan, 33, got his start by answering a casting call in Dublin for the crime film Between the Canals, per Britannica. He gained more recognition on TV for his role in the 2013 season of Ireland’s Love/Hate.

Incredibly versatile with a chameleonic look to match, the actor scored a breakout role in 2017’s The Killing of a Sacred Deer, from helmer Yorgos Lanthimos. After that, Keoghan became a strong supporting actor in films like American Animals,The Batman, and The Banshees of Inisherin

In 2023, he took on his first leading role in Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn, playing Oliver Quick, an Oxford student obsessed with his aristocratic classmate (Jacob Elordi), who by the end of the film is barely recognizable. He’s also been tasked with carrying the baton for the Peaky Blinders universe and tapped to playRingo Starr in Sam Mendes' Beatles project. So, yeah, the glow-up is glowing.

At Nos. 3 and 2, MJ has Chris Pratt, 46, and Paul Dano, 41, respectively. The former went from goofy guy next door in shows like Everwood and Parks and Recreation, to perfectly tanned and shredded romantic day-saving lead on the big screen with the Jurassic World franchise and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy

Dano, on the other hand, made the jump from gangly bookworm – see: The Girl Next Door – and forgettable side piece in the A.J. Soprano social circle, to a commanding presence on every screen he graces. The multi-hyphenate continues to rise as a formidable actor (There Will Be Blood, Prisoners, The Fabelmans) and writer/director (Wildlife).

And, finally, at the top, the actor the outlet says has made the most impressive transformation is Will Poulter. An English actor and 2014’s BAFTA Rising Star Award winner, Poulter, 33, began his screen career with Son of Rambow, a fantastic indie about two kids who love making war movies.

Growing up on the big screen, Poulter moved on to The Chronicles of Narnia and We’re the Millers, during which he gives one of the most iconic performances as the naive Kenny Rossmore. Around 2023, Poulter stunned fans with his appearance as Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Fans further lost their minds over Poulter’s Chef Luca in The Bear. His physique was seemingly swole overnight, his acting abilities as refined as his cheffy tweezer technique, and his confidence top-notch on the red carpet. Perhaps it was his Navy SEAL training for Warfare or the fact that he was (falsely) linked to romancing the amazing Florence Pugh – whatever the reason, Poulter has solidified himself a hot Hollywood commodity.

All five are “proof that Hollywood glow ups aren’t about looks — they’re about evolution.”

Jeremy Miller, Who Played Ben on ‘Growing Pains,’ Posts Hilarious Throwback to the Beloved Series

Sat, 03/28/2026 - 12:11pm

Jeremy Miller became a star on the beloved sitcomGrowing Pains, and the actor is calling out his former co-stars in an adorable throwback photo.

Miller, 48, played young Ben Seaver on the hit series, which followed Alan Thicke as a psychiatrist and Joanna Kerns as a TV reporter as they run their Long Island family. The series catapulted Kirk Cameron to stardom as sweet and rebellious Mike Seaver, and Tracey Gold as nerdy Carol. Ashley Johnson came on board as Chrissy Seaver, the youngest child, in season 4, and Leonardo DiCaprio was introduced as a homeless teen who was adopted by the family at the tail end of the show's run.

In a fun throwback post, Miller posted a photo of himself from the episode when Chrissy was born.

"When you realize you're not the baby anymore! #throwbackthursday," Miller captioned the photo, tagging all of his former castmates.

What Has Miller Said About His Costars Saving Him From Homelessness?

When Miller's role concluded on Growing Pains in 1992, he went on to build a career as a private chef. But when the 2008 financial crisis hit, his business when under. Luckily, it was his former co-stars who saved him from ending up homeless.

During a recent interview with Scott Austalosh on the “Youngstown Studios” podcast, Miller recalled how Thicke and Cameron saved him, the New York Post reported.

“My catering company went under, and I was really struggling,” Miller recalled. “I mean, really struggling, on the brink of homelessness.”

“Things got really bad, and Alan and Kirk were the only two who stepped up to help me,” Miller shared. “Alan set up interviews with all of his restaurateur friends in Santa Barbara and a few other places, and got me connected to different places where I could utilize my chef skills and earn some money to help take care of my family.”

Miller went on to say, “All it took was a phone call to say, ‘Hey, Al, I’m really struggling. Do you know anybody who might…’ and that’s all I had to say. He was on the phone for the next two days, making connections and doing everything he could to try to help me. That was just the kind of guy he was.”

Check out Miller's interview below:

What Did Miller Say About His Relationship with Alan Thicke?

Miller had nothing but love for his onscreen dad, who passed away in 2016 at age 69.

“And he was always so full of life,” Miller shared during the podcast. “That was why losing him was such a shock. All of us, we really thought he was gonna be the next Dick Clark — 102 and still going. He was so full of life and so full of energy.”

“He was just such a kind, generous, and amazing man,” Miller continued. “He and I would talk probably once a month, once every two months. He would call just to check up on me, make sure everything was good."

Miller went on to say that Thicke "really did fill that father role.”

“He was my other dad. As close as I am to my real father, I was almost as close to Alan. He did step into that role in a prominent way,” he added.

Clearly, Miller is thriving these days. It sounds like Thicke's influence was a wonderful one!

1994 Hit Song From Alternative Rock Band Hailed as a 'Poetic Rock Classic' of the '90s

Sat, 03/28/2026 - 12:06pm

There are plenty of rock classics that evoke emotion through their lyrics and music, with certain hits from the '90s being tagged as being "more like poetry." A track from Hole has been tagged as the very same and was one of the alternative rock band's signature hits.

American Songwriter released a Top 3 list of classic rock songs from the '90s whose lyrics have a bigger meaning and have become essential to the story it wants to tell. One to take note of is Hole's "Doll Parts," which was released in 1994 as part of their Live Through This album.

It was written by the band's lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist, Courtney Love, and became their sixth overall single. The track was created during the band's North American tour in 1994, with Love having performed the track acoustically during a show in Massachusetts. She later finished the lyrics two weeks later and became a staple in the setlist.

"Doll Parts" was also the first single by Hole to be released following the death of bassist Kristen Pfaff. The track's overall lyrics are in reference to Love's beginning relationship with Nirvana frontman and rock icon Kurt Cobain. Love previously commented that she thought Conain "didn't like her", with the lyrics interpreting feelings of love, rejection, and unrequited romance. The song was written before their official relationship and later marriage.

Related: 1984 Ultra Classic Became a No. 1 Hit 42 Years Ago Today

The lyrics involving a "heart-shaped box" were in reference to a real encounter she had with Cobain in 1991. She sent him a box she purchased at an antique store as a form of apology for how they first met, where she wrestled him. It's reported that the Cobain-penned Nirvana song, "Heart-Shaped Box," was influenced by it. "Doll Parts" took on a different meaning following his death in April 1994.

The song became Hole's biggest hit and highest-charting song in the United States, coming in at No.58 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. It also peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart.

The list also includes Counting Crows' track "A Long December," which was released from their 1996 album The Satellites. Lead singer Adam Duritz was inspired to write the track after a close friend was hit by a motorist, with the track even named the band's greatest song by American Songwriter.

Alice in Chains' "Would?" from their 1992 Dirt album also ranks on the list. The band, along with many others, released tribute tracks following th death of Seattle rocker Andrew Wood, who died of a drug overdose.

Royal Baby Moments Everyone Is Still Obsessed Over

Sat, 03/28/2026 - 11:43am

The British royal family has welcomed many babies over the years and provided royal watchers with several adorable moments.

Princess Anne started the tradition of getting photos taken on the steps of the Lindo Wing at St. Mary’s Hospital after giving birth to her son, Peter Phillips, in 1977 and her daughter, Zara Tindall, in 1981. Both times, Anne was snapped as she and her new babies were getting into the car.

Princess Diana modernized the tradition by formally posing with then-Prince Charles. She wore a teal polka dot smock dress after delivering Prince Williamin 1982. Following Prince Harry’s birth in 1984, the Princess of Wales donned an iconic red coatdress designed by Jan Van Velden.

The current Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, followed suit and posed outside the Lindo Wing with her three kids, George, Charlotte, and Louis, in 2013, 2015, and 2018, respectively.

Kate admitted it was “slightly terrifying” to pose in front of photographers for the first time with her brand new baby mere hours after giving birth. However, she was eager to share their bundle of joy after the public rallied around the couple during her pregnancy.

“Everyone had been so supportive and both William and I were really conscious that this was something that everyone was excited about and you know we’re hugely grateful for the support that the public had shown us, and actually for us to be able to share that joy and appreciation with the public, I felt was really important,” Kate said on the “Happy Mum, Happy Baby” podcast in 2025. “Equally, it was coupled with a newborn baby, and inexperienced parents, and the uncertainty of what that held, so there were all sorts of mixed emotions.”

"I could not be more grateful for every one of them and for the leaders and mentors here who have believed in me and given me more opportunities than I ever dreamed of.”

Alexander added, "Of course, I'm grateful to you for welcoming [me] into your homes for all these years. Almost 14 of those years from the North Lawn of the White House, or maybe from around the world. It's hard to believe that I've been a part of the NBC family for longer than I have had my own family. Studio 1A, being right here with this team, with all the folks that you don't get to see on TV. This is literally my happy place. It is so fun. I mean, what a gig."

1974 No. 1 One-Hit Wonder ‘Didn’t Sell One Copy’ for Five Weeks—Then It Exploded

Sat, 03/28/2026 - 11:15am

In 1974, Carl Douglas had a surprise hit with the song “Kung Fu Fighting.” The disco single by the Jamaican-British singer appeared on his debut album, Kung Fu Fighting and Other Great Love Songs.

The song hit No. 1 on the  Billboard Hot 100 on Dec. 7, 1974 and remained there for two weeks. More than 50 years later, “Kung Fu Fighting” remains one of the most memorable one-hit wonders of all time.

Set to a disco rhythm, the song celebrated kung fu moves at a time when martial arts movies and the TV series Kung Fu were extremely popular.

In a 2024 interview posted by Soave Records, Douglas, now 83, explained, "No matter where we were, we'd always rush to get home at that time on Saturday afternoon when Kung Fu was on.”

The song took a while to take off

“Kung Fu Fighting” was released in August 1974. But it wasn’t originally meant to be a single. In the book The Billboard Book of Number One Hits, author Fred Bronson noted that record producer Biddu Appaiah initially contacted Douglas to record the single, "I Want to Give You My Everything," but he needed a B-side. Douglas shared lyrics from several songs he had written, including “Kung Fu Fighting.”

“Since it was going to be a B-side, I said, 'Fine, we'll have a song called 'Kung Fu Fighting,” Biddu recalled. “So I started working out some melody for it. Nothing was taken seriously."

"I went over the top on the huhs and the hahs and the chopping sounds. It was a B-side. Who was going to listen?" Biddu once admitted, per Stereogum.

"Kung Fu Fighting" was recorded quickly, with just 10 minutes of remaining studio time. After presenting the single and its B-side to Pye Records, Biddu was told that “Kung Fu Fighting” appeared to have more hit potential than “I Want to Give You My Everything,” so it was released as the single instead.

The song, first released in Britain, did nothing at first.

In Bronson's book, Biddu recalled, "The first five weeks, we didn't get one play on radio. It didn't sell one copy. And then suddenly, it just took off from the (dance) clubs, and it went to number one. It went to number one all around the world. We sold nine million copies."

RELATED: 1976 No. 1 One-Hit Wonder Was Written in Five Minutes

In the Soave interview, Douglas shared that the arranger for the song told Biddu, “Listen you know, this thing about Kung Fu, Carl has put in so much of his heart and soul into it that I think it could be a hit. And we said, ‘You’re certain?’ He said, ‘I think so.’”

At first, the BBC rejected the song, feeling that it induced stereotypes of violence and fighting. “But when it came out, it became one of the biggest dance songs in the discotheques,” Douglas said of the song. “The BBC suddenly accepted that this song was kind of different. It went to all different genres of dancing. …  That’s when the BBC suddenly realized that no, this thing, it's going to go not just to discotheques. It's going to go to gymnasiums, going to go to dance halls, it's going to go to schools. And they realized that listen, we got to promote this thing.”

“It became an anthem,” Douglas said of the eventual hit song.

Douglas has disputed criticism that “Kung Fu Fighting” contains racist lyrics. “There's no racism in the song,” he once told The Daily Mail, per Reason.

In 1975, Douglas recorded the "Kung Fu Fighting" sequel, "Dance The Kung Fu," but the follow-up song didn't break the Top 40 on the Billboard chart.

Dove Fans Bet Its 2 New Chocolate Bar Flavors Are ‘Amazing’

Sat, 03/28/2026 - 11:12am

Dove is springing into the season with two all-new chocolate bars, and they're both no less than "amazing," according to fans.

The iconic candy brand has been a sweet pantry staple in American households since the '80s, and ever since, fans have looked forward to enjoying its classic Promises flavors, seasonal favorites (like its Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Reindeer), and the occasional release of new flavors.

Most recently, some lucky shoppers spotted not one but two new flavors of Dove's "Silky Smooth" chocolate bars in stores, and they're both something that fans everywhere are eyeing.

Dove's 2 New Chocolate Bars Are Winning Over Fans

Earlier this week, Milk Chocolate Espresso and Dark Chocolate Blood Orange-flavored Dove bars were found on shelves at a major grocery store chain and fans wasted no time sharing photos of the purchased items online.

One called the item "yummy," before another agreed, cheering, "Ooh yum!"

"Ooooooooo!" another let out, "I forget about Dove most of the time but these sound really nice."

"Oh I bet you those espresso ones are amazing!!!!" one more declared.

View this post on Instagram Where Will Dove's Milk Chocolate Espresso and Dark Chocolate Blood Orange Bars Be Available?

Dove's Milk Chocolate Espresso and Dark Chocolate Blood Orange bars appear to be in the early stages of rollout, and it's currently unclear whether the items will be offered as exclusives to one retailer or if there's a broader release planned.

Shoppers have successfully found them at select Hy-Vee locations (prices may vary), so if you happen to live near the chain, your best bet is to roam the aisles or check in with an employee there. Should you not live in the vicinity of a Hy-Vee, we wouldn't give up hope just yet—there's always the chance that, even if Dove didn't plan to expand its chocolates, enough fans demanding it could prompt the company to revisit its plans.

Until then, Dove Milk and Dark Chocolate bars are available nationwide, and those looking for a little more zest or added sweetness can opt for Dove's Dark Chocolate and Sea Salt Caramels, its peanut butter-filled Dark Chocolate, Mint Swirl, or Molten Lava Promises. Consumers looking to satisfy cravings for chocolate-and-orange or chocolate-and-espresso flavor combinations specifically can always find similar offers from Lindt (namely its Excellence collection) at a store near them.

A spokesperson was not immediately available for comment. We will update this post with any relevant information that may be shared about the products.

Barbra Streisand Offered Elvis Presley an Iconic Movie Role 51 Years Ago Today: Here's Why He Didn’t Take It

Sat, 03/28/2026 - 11:07am

As Hollywood lore goes, on March 28, 1975, singer and actor Barbra Streisand dipped backstage at a concert to ask singer Elvis Presley to come on board her movie project A Star Is Born (1976). As we all know now in future times, Presley didn't take the film role as John Norman Howard, the rock star whose career is sinking with alcohol and drug use. The role went to singer Kris Kristofferson.

So the backstage story goes, as outlined in the fan-run Barbra Archives: Elvis was performing at the Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas. Streisand flew in to see the show, meet with Presley and his manager, Colonel Parker, and offer Presley the role in the movie, for which she was not only writing music and acting in but also executive producing.

Streisand writes in her memoir, My Name is Barbra, “We talked about the film, and Elvis was interested ... But obviously it didn’t work out."

According to people around Presley at the time, there were a couple reasons Presley ultimately did not take on the role. There are reports that Presley (via his manager) demanded too much money. And there were also concerns that Streisand would overshadow the King of Rock or that the film about a freefalling musician might be bad for Presley's reputation.

Related: 1976 Classic Was a No. 1 Hit 49 Years Ago Today

"Barbra had offered him the part," Elvis' ex-wife Priscilla Presley told People in a 2024 interview. "Colonel talked him out of that saying, 'Oh, it's not going to be good. She's going to be in charge, not you. Her movie, not yours.' Elvis regretted that because he felt he could have played that part."

Both Priscilla and songwriter Linda Thompson, Presley's girlfriend at the time of the film offer, publicly recalled that Presley wanted to take on more serious and meatier acting roles.

However, in her memoir, Thompson wrote, “The Colonel thought it was a bad idea for Elvis to play a character that might be viewed by some as a loser, saying that Elvis had an image to uphold.”

Photo by Steve Morley on Getty Images

At this time in his life, Presley was already in the throws of substance use, which was contributing to his deteriorating health, and aspects of his life and career were spiraling out of control.

Kris Kristofferson has shared that playing the role in A Star Is Born, particularly watching his own on-screen death scene, ultimately led to his personal decision to get sober. Kristofferson died on September 28, 2024, at age 88.

Presley died of a heart attack on August 16, 1977, at age 42.

The 1976 film A Star Is Born earned both Streisand and Kristofferson best actor Golden Globe awards and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song ("Evergreen")

1980 Career-Defining Classic Ranked Among 'Best Funk Songs' of All Time Was a No. 1 Hit for 4 Weeks Straight

Sat, 03/28/2026 - 11:00am

Have you ever been to Funkytown? Chances are, if you lived through the '80s/'90s, there was a point where you couldn't escape hearing the infectious single by Lipps Inc.

Released in March 1980, "Funkytown" turned a Minneapolis studio project into a global sensation, topping charts around the world and earning its place among Billboard’s best funk songs of all time.

The famed music publication ranked the instant hit—which sat in the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks straight from late May through June 1980—at No. 15 on its lineup of the greatest era-defining funk tracks, where Earth, Wind, and Fire's "Shining Star" and Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" also make appearances, among several others. (Zapp's "More Bounce to the Ounce" was ranked No. 1.)

Driven by its futuristic synth riff and dancefloor-ready groove, the song resonated across audiences during a time when disco was evolving into new wave and electronic pop. It also topped the dance charts and became a worldwide smash, hitting No. 1 in multiple countries and selling millions of copies globally. In the U.S. alone, the single sold over two million copies within months and quickly achieved platinum status—solidifying it as the group’s career-defining hit.

A One-Hit Wonder

Despite its massive success, “Funkytown” would become Lipps Inc.’s only Top 40 hit in the U.S.—earning the group “one-hit wonder” status, though their influence stretched far beyond a single chart entry. The song’s impact helped bridge disco and synth-pop, influencing the direction of dance music in the early ’80s. Its signature sound—anchored by electronic textures and a driving beat—became a blueprint for future club hits.

More than 40 years after its release, the track remains a staple in pop culture—featured in films, commercials, and playlists that celebrate the golden age of dance music. With over eight million copies sold worldwide, it stands as one of the most successful disco-funk singles ever recorded.

Lipps Inc. Career Beginnings

Lipps Inc. began as the brainchild of songwriter and producer Steven Greenberg, a former DJ who wanted to break into the disco scene. What started as a studio concept quickly took shape when vocalist Cynthia Johnson joined the project, giving the group its unmistakable voice.

The group, formed in Minneapolis in 1979, operated with a rotating lineup of session musicians, but its identity centered on Greenberg’s production and Johnson’s vocals. Their debut album, Mouth to Mouth, introduced what would become their signature sound.

1960 Hollywood Landmark Began With a Historic First 66 Years Ago Today

Sat, 03/28/2026 - 10:42am

In March 1960, one of Hollywood’s most famous landmarks officially began with a single, historic moment.

On March 28, 1960, the first permanent star was laid on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, marking the beginning of what would become one of the most recognizable attractions in the world.

That first star honored film producer and director Stanley Kramer, a major figure in mid-century Hollywood known for both blockbuster films and socially conscious storytelling. His early work included producing classics like High Noon and The Caine Mutiny, and he later directed acclaimed films such as Judgment at Nuremberg and Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.

Accordindg to The History Channel, actress Joanne Woodward is often mistakenly credited as the first recipient, her star was actually part of an earlier set of prototype stars installed in 1958 to promote the project before construction officially began.

Once construction got underway in early 1960, the Walk of Fame quickly expanded. Over the next 16 months, more than 1,500 stars were installed along Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street, turning the area into a lasting tribute to the entertainment industry.

The Walk of Fame recognizes stars across multiple areas of entertainment, though very few have been honored in more than one category. Gene Autry remains the only person to receive stars in five fields—motion pictures, television, radio, live performance and music. Bob Hope and Tony Martin each earned four stars, while 33 entertainers have been honored in three categories, including Frank Sinatra, Danny Kaye and Jack Benny. Only two women—Dinah Shore and Gale Storm—have achieved that distinction.

Today, the Hollywood Walk of Fame stretches for more than a mile and features over 2,700 stars honoring actors, musicians, filmmakers and other influential figures. It remains one of Los Angeles’ most visited tourist destinations, drawing millions of visitors each year.

The stars themselves were designed to be instantly recognizable, featuring a coral-pink terrazzo surface bordered in brass and set into dark pavement. Each one includes an emblem representing the honoree’s field—from motion pictures to television, music, radio and more—turning the walkway into a visual timeline of entertainment history.

What started with a single star honoring one filmmaker has since grown into a global symbol of entertainment history — and it all began on this day in 1960.

Iconic '90s Actress With Major Oscar Award Turns 78

Sat, 03/28/2026 - 10:40am

There's a quiet emotional depth that has long defined Dianne Wiest's work, and as she turns 78, its a quality that has shaped one of the most respected careers in Hollywood.

Born in Kansas City on March 28, 1948, Wiest initially pursued ballet before shifting her focus to acting. She went on to train in theater and build a strong foundation on stage before transitioning into film and television, where her nuanced performances quickly set her apart.

Wiest earned widespread acclaim for her work in film, winning two Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actress, first for Hannah and Her Sisters and later for Bullets Over Broadway. Her ability to balance vulnerability, intelligence and emotional complexity made her a standout in both roles.

She also found major success on television, earning two Primetime Emmy Awards over the course of her career—first for her role in Road to Avonlea and later for In Treatment. The wins highlighted her remarkable range, proving she could deliver equally powerful performances on the small screen as she did in film.

Among her many memorable roles, Wiest is perhaps especially beloved for her performance in Edward Scissorhands, where she played Peg Boggs, the kind-hearted Avon saleswoman who takes in Edward, played by Johnny Depp. Her warmth and sincerity helped ground the film's fantasy elements, making her character one of its emotional anchors.

"We had an affection for [Edward], and you sort of overlook people's handicaps, if you will," she told TODAY, reflecting on the Boggs family. "This seemed like a handicap and we still loved him so much and just opened our home to him and he gave us so much in return."

Over the years, Wiest has continued to take on a wide variety of roles in film, television and theater, consistently earning praise for her thoughtful and layered performances. In 2021, Wiest took on the role of Miriam McLusky, the matriarch at the center of Taylor Sheridan's Mayor of Kingstown, and has remained a key presence throughout the series.

"You know, in a strange way I miss that dynamic of the stage when I'm working in film, or television," Wiest told Film Speak. "To compensate, and this is probably what's wrong with my acting, the crew becomes my audience. I can tell if I've done the scene well, by the quality of their silence, or by their reaction, or somebody giggles behind the camera, I think 'I got it.' So I just, I had been kind of making up my own audience. But I really love a live audience."

At 78, Dianne Wiest's career stands as a testament to the power of subtlety in acting, proving that some of the most impactful performances are the ones that feel the most human.
