’90s Heavy Metal Band Announces News on 2026 Tour

Sun, 03/29/2026 - 8:30am

Nevermore, the heavy metal band from Seattle, has set the record straight regarding their 2026 U.S. tour plans.

Formed in 1992, the five-member band has released a series of standout songs that showcase their signature blend of progressive metal with thrash, groove and power metal, with fan favorites such as “Dead Heart in a Dead World” and “This Godless Endeavor” and more.

With this, fans are once again pushing for additional tour dates as the band rolls out Nevermore Live in 2026 in the wake of their long-awaited reunion.

Ahead of the show’s April kickoff, the band shared an update that could mean a longer wait for fans.

In an Instagram post, Nevermore shared an update regarding their U.S. tour plans.

Unfortunately, due to difficulties in “getting the work permit,” it will take “much longer than anticipated.”

Moreover, the situation also led them to skip the annual ProgPower USA scheduled on Sept. 9 to 12.

“Sadly, it also means that we won’t be able to perform at ProgPower USA this year. Sincere apologies to Glenn, the ProgPower USA crew and our US fans, and thanks for understanding,” the caption reads.

However, the heavy metal band assured fans about its exciting plans for the future, including new music and more live performances next year.

“New music is forthcoming, and we’ll finally be back on stages in the States performing it live in 2027. We owe it to all of you and promise we’ll make it worth the wait. In light of all of this, we are actively booking more international shows for later this year. Announcements for those will happen soon,” the message reads.

Trailblazing Comedy Series Ended 48 Years Ago Today After 25 Emmy Wins and 11 Seasons

Sun, 03/29/2026 - 8:15am

After 11 seasons on the air, The Carol Burnett Show wrapped its iconic run on March 29, 1978.

The CBS sketch comedy aired its series finale after its star, Carol Burnett, made history as the first woman to host a variety TV show. The award-winning series ended after 279 episodes, airing for nearly 11 years from September 1967 to March 1978.

Throughout its run, The Carol Burnett Show won 25 Emmy Awards and was nominated 70 times. Its accolades included three trophies for outstanding variety series, acting awards for Harvey Korman, Tim Conway and Vicki Lawrence, and recognition for writing, directing, music, choreography and editing.

In addition to Burnett, now 92, the cast included Lawrence, Korman, Conway, Lyle Waggoner and Dick Van Dyke.

During a 2012 interview with CBS This Morning, Burnett revealed that her variety show only came to be because of her “strange contract.”

“Within the first five years, there was a clause that said, if I wanted to—not if the network wanted—it was bizarre, that I could push that button and they would have to put us on the air for 30 one-hour variety shows, pay or play,” she recalled at the time. “I thought, ‘I’m not a host of [a] variety show—I don’t know if I could ever do that.’”

At the end of the fifth year of her contract, Burnett and her then-husband, Joe Hamilton, decided to inform CBS they wanted to do a variety show, which she claimed the network had “forgotten” was an option. Once executives realized the clause really existed, they tried to talk her out of the idea.

“[A CBS executive] said, ‘You know, Carol, it’s a man’s game. Variety is a man’s game. It’s Jackie Gleason. … It’s Milton Berle, it’s Dean Martin.’ He said, ‘We’ve got this great sitcom for you called Here’s Agnes.’ You can just picture it,” she remembered. “I said, ‘I don’t want to be Agnes. I want to have a variety show with music and sketches and guest stars and a rep company,’ and they had to put us on the air. If I hadn’t pushed that button, it wouldn’t have happened.”

The Carol Burnett Show became a trailblazing hit in the world of TV comedy. More than a decade after the show began, Burnett ended it on her own terms.

“Ratings do not have a thing to do with my decision,” she insisted at the time, per MeTV. “They have been much lower before. And CBS picked the show up for a 12th year. … But it’s classier to leave before you’re asked to go. I’m proud of our show. Now is the time to put it to bed.”

While the moment signaled the closing of a major chapter in Burnett’s life and career, she expressed her gratitude for the journey.

“Nothing ever remains the same,” she said. “But a good time was had by all in those 11 years.”

In the decades that followed, Burnett appeared in films such as 1982’s Annie, returned to Broadway, helmed TV specials with the likes of Julie Andrews and Whoopi Goldberg, starred on the NBC comedy series Carol & Company from 1990 to 1991 and guest-starred on shows such as Mad About You. She also returned for a brief Carol Burnett Show revival in 1991. Today, Burnett is still acting, most recently appearing in the Apple TV series Palm Royale from 2024 to 2026.

Quote of the Day: Christopher Reeve on the Power of Hope

Sun, 03/29/2026 - 8:12am

At just nine years old, Christopher Reeve discovered his passion for acting and never looked back. The New York native trained at Cornell University and was one of only two students—the other being his lifelong best friendRobin Williams—selected for Juilliard's advanced program under the legendary John Houseman. He made his Broadway debut opposite Katharine Hepburn in A Matter of Gravity at just 23 years old!

And then came the audition that made him a household name: In 1978, Reeve beat out hundreds of actors to land the role of Superman. He became a global superstar after the movie's 1978 release and went on to star in three more Superman sequels. He also demonstrated his incredible acting range in acclaimed films like Somewhere in Time, The Remains of the Day and Deathtrap.

But on May 27, 1995, his life forever changed in an instant. During an equestrian competition in Virginia, the actor was thrown from his horse. Reeve shattered his two upper vertebrae, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down at just 42 years old.

But while most people might have retreated from public life, Christopher Reeve did the exact opposite. He founded what later became the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, was one of the most powerful voices for spinal cord injury research, directed an HBO film, won a Screen Actors Guild Award and wrote two books that inspired millions. The man who played Superman on screen would end up becoming an even bigger hero off of it—and that's exactly why Christopher Reeve is today's quote of the day.

Quote of the Day by Christopher Reeve

"Once you choose hope, anything's possible."

Those seven words come from Reeve's 2002 book Nothing Is Impossible: Reflections on a New Life, and they perfectly capture the philosophy that defined his extraordinary life. For Christopher Reeve, hope was never about wishful thinking or ignoring reality. It was a choice—the most powerful one a person can make—and he made it every single day.

Deeper Meaning of Christopher Reeve's Quote—Hope

When you understand what the Superman star was living through when he said this quote, it hits completely differently. See, after his accident, Reeve couldn't even breathe on his own. He couldn't move. He later revealed that in those early days, he seriously considered whether his life was still worth living. Reeve was in the intensive care unit when he mouthed to his wife Dana, "Maybe we should let me go."

But her reply changed everything: she leaned in, looked him in the eyes and said, "I am only going to say this once: I will support whatever you want to do, because this is your life, and your decision. But I want you to know that I'll be with you for the long haul, no matter what. You're still you. And I love you." This moment was the turning point for Reeve. That was the moment he chose hope.

And once he made that choice, he didn't just survive—he thrived. He continued his acting career and used the fame he found with it to fight for disability rights. He lobbied Congress for stem cell research funding and traveled the world speaking about these issues.

That is the deeper truth behind "Once you choose hope, anything's possible." He wasn't saying life would be easy. He wasn't saying everything would magically work out. He was saying that the act of choosing hope—even on what feels like your darkest day—will open doors you didn't even know existed. And he proved it with his life.

Reeve passed away on October 10, 2004, at 52 years old. Dana continued his advocacy work until her own passing in 2006. Today, their son Will Reeve carries on their legacy as a correspondent for ABC News and through the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, which remains one of the leading organizations in spinal cord injury research. The Reeve family's story is proof that hope doesn't just change one life—it can change the world.

  • "So many of our dreams at first seem impossible, then they seem improbable, and then, when we summon the will, they soon become inevitable."
  • "What I do is based on powers we all have inside us; the ability to endure, the ability to love, to carry on, to make the best of what we have—and you don't have to be a 'Superman' to do it."
  • "You play the hand you're dealt. I think the game's worthwhile."
  • "Even if your body doesn't work the way it used to, the heart and the mind and the spirit are not diminished."

RHORI’s Ashley Iaconetti Swears by This Genius Parenting Hack

Sun, 03/29/2026 - 8:03am

Bravo’s Real Housewives franchise is back in a big way this April. And the hit reality show is headed to the East Coast.

Former The Bachelorand Bachelor in Paradise star, Ashley Iaconetti (Haibon), is joining the cast of the Real Housewives of Rhode Island, along with reality TV co-stars Alicia Carmody, Rosie DiMare, Liz McGraw, Rulla Nehme Pontarelli, Kelsey Swanson, Jo-Ellen Tiberi, and “friend” former RHONJ fan favorite Dolores Catania

While you may already know Iaconetti as one of the most memorable The Bachelor breakout stars, the podcast host is also the mom of two. Iaconetti met husband Jared Haibon on Bachelor in Paradise, and the couple is now parents to Dawson Dimitri Haibon (Born in January 2022) and Hayden Cruise Haibon (born in July 2024).

In a recent Instagram post, Iaconetti gave fans a sneak peek into her life, sharing a cute clip of her family dining out. In the video, her son gives his mom a makeover while dining out at a restaurant. That is, a sticker makeover.

View this post on Instagram

As any parent knows, going out to eat with your little ones isn’t exactly easy. Between the mini meltdowns and picky eaters, what used to be an enjoyable experience can quickly morph into a nightmare. But Ashley has an answer! In her post, Iaconetti revealed a totally genius parenting hack.

The mom wrote across her video, “Pro-tip for parents who want to go to a restaurant with their little kids.” She explained, in the caption, “Bring stickers and humility…I usually say that going out to eat with littles is a waste of time and money. You can rarely enjoy your own food or talk as you’re tending to chaos. I will say that we’ve had a few good dinners out the past month for family birthdays.”

So, what’s her secret? The reality TV star went on to add, “If you have a foodie baby like us, have someone get there early and order appetizers to be on the table when you arrive. Having a variety of foods for Hayden to try stalls his frustration over being stuck in a high chair.”

But that’s not all. Iaconetti also writes, “I also find that new sensory toys, like kinetic sand and gooey stuff, is great to introduce at the dinner table.”

She also gets real, admitting, “We try not to put a screen on, but gotta go what ya gotta do to enjoy the other company at the table sometimes. At 4-years-old we don’t have to resort to this with Dawson anymore…as you can see he finds more creative things to do.” And if you’re up for an artsy adventure like Iaconetti is, go ahead and let your littles decorate away!

Nancy Guthrie Update: Body Found in Scottsdale Canal Prompts Death Investigation

Sun, 03/29/2026 - 7:39am

A female's body found in a canal in Scottsdale, Arizona, has prompted an investigation. Though the body has not yet been identified, authorities say that the case is unrelated to Nancy Guthrie.

"A death investigation is underway after an adult woman's body was recovered from a canal near Indian Bend and Hayden Roads on March 28th. Police and fire personnel were first called to the area around 8 a.m. after someone walking along the canal saw the body in the water," read a press release posted by the Scottsdale police department on X.

"Responding police and fire personnel coordinated with SRP and CAP to recover the body from the water and begin the death investigation. Scottsdale detectives and crime scene specialists responded to the scene to collect evidence and thoroughly document the scene. Due to the condition of the body, investigators are initially unable to confirm if there are traumatic injuries present. The investigation is still in the early stages as detectives work to confirm the identity of the person and how they ended up in the canal," the statement continued.

Quite a few comments amassed on the post, with many people wondering if the body could have been that of Guthrie, 84, who has been missing since Sunday, Feb. 1. However, the department replied to one comment, confirming that this case is "not related" to Guthrie's case, being run by Pima County, about 115 miles away.

This is the second time that a body has been found in or near a canal in Arizona this month. In early March, authorities identified a female body that was found "unresponsive with signs of trauma." Though many people thought that the body may have been Guthrie's, police later confirmed that it was that of a 42-year-old woman named Alex Fleming.

This Surprising Problem Can Raise Your Risk of a Hip Fracture

Sun, 03/29/2026 - 7:25am

Besides being inconvenient, painful and expensive to fix, a hip fracture is (obviously) a major health concern. So much so, experts consider it “among the most serious health events in older adults,” noting it can lead to disability, loss of independence and elevated mortality. Regarding the latter, a 2025 study in the Journal of Orthopaedic Reports says that when it’s left untreated, a hip fracture has around a 70 percent mortality rate—a scarily high number, right?

To avoid hip fractures, you may take various health-promoting steps, such as getting enough calcium for strong bones, wearing shoes with a strong grip and holding onto handrails when you walk down the stairs. Those are all important and worth continuing. At the same time, there’s an unexpected health concern that could be linked to hip fractures, and we’re betting it’s one you haven’t thought of or purposely addressed in the gym. That concern is handgrip strength.

A 2024 longitudinal study in Orthopaedic Surgery found a “significant inverse association between [handgrip strength] and the risk of hip fracture and falls in both males and females,” particularly those aged 45 years or older. The researchers believe that assessing handgrip strength may help predict fracture and fall risk, so certain individuals should be extra careful.

What do orthopedic surgeons have to say? Let’s hear their insights about how less handgrip strength could contribute to hip fracture risk, and how you can avoid that problem.

🩺SIGN UP for Parade’s health newsletter with expert-approved tips, healthy eats, exercises, news & more to help you stay healthy & feel your best self💊

Yasser Chalid

The Connection Between Handgrip Strength and Hip Fracture Risk

To explain, we’ll start with hip fractures. Over 95 percent of hip fractures are caused by falls, and unfortunately, falls can happen for various reasons besides the obvious ones.

“Decreased core muscle strength and decreased stability with gait and balance, coupled with decreased bone density, lead to a higher risk [of] falls and fractures,” Dr. Ryan Odgers, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at OrthoArizona, tells Parade.

Related: This 1 Arm Workout Could Be Your Best Bone Density Hack Yet

That’s where handgrip strength comes in. “If your grip is weak, it can be a sign of broader muscle weakness and lower physical resilience,” says Dr. Pamela Mehta, MD,a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and founder of Resilience Orthopedics in Los Gatos, California. “That means worse balance and a higher risk of falls, which is the main driver of hip fractures.”

To be clear, this is another example of “correlation does not equal causation.” Lower grip strength doesn’t cause someone to fall, and a weak grip only indicates a percentage of increased risk, Dr. Odgers says. We’re not looking at certainties here, but a simple proxy test for overall muscle strength.

Dr. Mehta agrees. “Improving grip strength alone is not the same as reducing hip fracture risk,” she says. “Training your handgrip strength in isolation won’t reduce your fracture risk.”

Related: The One Simple Habit That Will Reduce the Risk of Falling As You Age by 23%

Tips for Reducing Hip Fracture Risk

On the note of handgrip strength not being the be-all and end-all, what else can we do to help our chances? According to Dr. Mehta, “Hip fracture prevention comes down to strength and stability for most people.”

Specific steps that orthopedic surgeons recommend as the “mainstays of fall and fracture prevention” include the following:

  • Balanced, full-body resistance workouts
  • Lower-body, weight-bearing strength exercises, such as squats, lunges and step-ups
  • Gait and balance training
  • Minimizing obstacles and tripping hazards in the home, such as uneven flooring, steps, loose rugs and poor lighting
  • Use assistive devices, such as canes and walkers, when recommended
  • Wear supportive shoes
  • Ensure you get enough calcium, vitamin D and protein in your diet

Related: The #1 Early Sign of Osteoporosis Most People Miss, According to Orthopedists

“If those pieces aren’t in place, you’re limiting how much benefit you’ll get from exercise, even if you’re doing all the right things in the gym,” Dr. Mehta adds.

When it comes to handgrip strength exercises, Dr. Odgers cautions his patients against overusing grip-strengthening devices.

“The hands get plenty of work with gripping weights and pushing on machines while we work the other muscle groups, and it is very easy to overuse grip-strengthening devices outside of the gym, which can lead to other issues such as tendinitis and aggravation of arthritis in the hands,” he says.

Dr. Mehta encourages people to engage in exercises that train grip *and* other muscle groups. She appreciates the “farmer’s carry,” saying it’s the “most bang for your buck” as it builds your grip, core strength and balance. Dead hangs (if your shoulders can handle them) are another option she mentions, as well as simply squeezing a tennis ball or using a hand gripper for a few minutes a day. But again, those latter two options don’t provide the holistic benefits of a full-body exercise, which is something to keep in mind.

“The big picture is that your body works as a system,” Dr. Mehta concludes. “Grip strength, hip strength and balance are all connected…I see patients in their 60s and 70s make meaningful gains when they stay consistent.”

1975 Classic Hit No. 1 51 Years Ago Today

Sun, 03/29/2026 - 7:19am

The bold, genre-blending smash hit "Lady Marmalade" rose to No. 1 on March 29, 1975, giving Labelle their biggest success—and marking a defining moment in 1970s pop music.

Released in late 1974, the song built momentum slowly before exploding into a crossover phenomenon. By early 1975, it had climbed all the way to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, while also dominating the R&B chart and gaining traction internationally.

Related: Beloved R&B Icon Honored in Moving New Documentary

According to "The Billboard Book of Number One Hits" author Fred Bronson, the song made history in a unique way: its writers replaced themselves at No. 1. "Lady Marmalade," written by Bob Crewe and Kenny Nolan, knocked another Crewe/Nolan composition, Frankie Valli’s “My Eyes Adored You,” out of the top spot—making Crewe and Nolan just the third songwriting team ever to achieve that rare feat.

Related: Iconic ’80s Singer, Whose No. 1 Hit Made History, Turns 76

The song itself came together in pieces. As Nolan explained, “I had one part of the song here and one part there, and it still needed something. Bob and I came up with the idea of ‘Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir.’ It was like a puzzle that finally fit together.”

That final piece helped turn the track into something unforgettable. "Lady Marmalade" is equal parts theatrical, provocative and impossible to ignore.

Produced by Allen Toussaint and recorded with his New Orleans studio band, the song carried a distinctive groove rooted in funk and rhythm. It was released as the first single from Labelle’s Nightbirds album and quickly found an audience in both discos and on radio.

Front and center was Patti LaBelle’s powerhouse vocal, supported by Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash, whose harmonies gave the track its layered intensity. The group’s bold image—complete with futuristic, space-inspired fashion—only added to the song’s impact as it climbed the charts.

The success of the single helped push Nightbirds past the million-sales mark and turned Labelle into one of the most talked-about acts of the era. While they wouldn’t return to the top of the charts again, the moment remains their signature breakthrough.

More than five decades later, the song’s legacy is still unmistakable—frequently covered, widely recognized and forever tied to one of the most electrifying chart-toppers of the 1970s.

50 Palm Sunday Quotes for Your Weekend-Before-Easter Celebration and Religious Observation

Sun, 03/29/2026 - 7:00am

Palm Sunday has the stuff that makes children's church programs so fun: palm branches, singing and shouting, a donkey and more.

Yet these things also carry the weight of symbolic significance for Christians moving into Holy Week—remembering the events of Jesus' last week on earth, his final moments leading to the crucifixion and his resurrection three days later. Palm Sunday kicks it all off—and we've got the 50 best Palm Sunday quotesand scriptures to share.

All four gospels offer an account of what is known as "Jesus's Triumphal Entry" into Jerusalem (Matthew 21:1-11; Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:28-44; and John 12:12-19). Jesus enters on a donkey, fulfilling the prophecy found in Zechariah 9:9:

"Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem! Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey" (NRSV).

The people, on this particular day, love him. A great crowd forms around him, waving palm branches in the air, eventually laying them on the road beside their cloaks.

For thousands of years, Christians have been observing Palm Sunday, which is on March 29, 2026, this year. The palm branches we wave on this day will become the ashes we smear on our foreheads next year for Ash Wednesday.

May these 50 quotes help you reflect on Palm Sunday, preparing you for your own entrance into the sacred spaces of Holy Week, and a blessed Resurrection Sunday to you.

Fans Are Basically Certain This Athlete Will Be on 'DWTS': 'This All But Confirms It'

Sun, 03/29/2026 - 7:00am

Fans are becoming more and more convinced that Savannah Bananas player Jackson Olson may be making his way to the Dancing with the Stars.

Following an epic performance by DTWS duo Derek Hough and Hayley Ebert on Friday night, that featured Olson at a Savannah Bananas game, fans were certain that the exhibition baseball player will be making his way to the ballroom.

View this post on Instagram

"Is this a soft launch for Jackson on dancing with the stars soon," one commenter speculated.

"OMG…Jackson is about to be on DWTS," said another.

"@jacksonolson_ on DWTS next season," another fan campaigned.

"Does this mean Jackson can be on the next season of DWTS please!" another said.

Olson, for his part, didn't add to any discussion online, but just commented a mirrorball emoji on the post.

However, another hopeful fan noted that this isn't the first time the athlete has talked about the ballroom competition show before.

"Jackson said on a podcast he would find out if he was on DWTS or not by the end of December. This all but confirms it," they said.

While it's unclear which podcast the fan was referring to, Olson chatted about DWTS on Ali Feller's podcast, 'Ali on the Run,' in December. And although he didn't say as to whether he'd be interested, he didn't say no either.

"That's the thing that I didn't want to talk about," he said. "We'll see what happens with that."

But when pressed about who he'd like to be partnered with he was ready with an answer.

"I think I would get along with Rylee [Arnold] because I've seen her videos, but I don't really have a specific [preference]," he said. "Whoever they would give me I'd be really cool with."

Olson also prompted speculation around the same time as the podcast, that he'd be competing on the show as he said in a December TikTok video that he'd be interested in participating.

1976 No. 5 Hit Ranked One of the ‘Top Classic Rock Songs’ of All Time Became a Timeless Anthem

Sun, 03/29/2026 - 6:18am

It’s been 50 years since Boston released their debut single, “More Than a Feeling.” The song was the first track from the legendary band’s self-titled 1976 debut album and has been a classic rock radio anthem ever since.

Released in September 1976, "More Than a Feeling” stood out for its signature guitar riff and layered vocals. The song peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 on Dec. 25, 1976, remaining on the chart for 19 weeks. In 2025, Ultimate Classic Rock ranked the Boston hit as one of the top 100 classic rock songs of all time, noting that the band “burst into the airways” with their lead track “in the fall of America's bicentennial celebration of 1976.”

“With a sound that was unique and yet somehow familiar, Boston were tailor-made for mid '70s FM radio,” the outlet noted, describing the band's debut song as “a rush of sunshine-laced guitars and vocals.”

“More Than a Feeling” firmly established Boston as one of the biggest rock bands of the 1970s.

The song took five years to write

Writing “More Than a Feeling” was no easy feat. According to Rolling Stone, Boston founding songwriter-guitarist Tom Scholz worked on the song for five years in his basement studio. In an essay for Entertainment Weekly, Scholz revealed that the song was not about a specific event but instead something that almost everybody could identify with: “Losing somebody that was important to them, and music taking them back there.”

He also revealed he and bandmate Brad Delp were rejected by record labels many times before he made a last-ditch effort with “More Than a Feeling.”

“I spent six years submitting dozens of recordings to dozens of record companies and I got nothing but rejections,” he shared. “By this point, I was 29 and I decided it was time to get responsible. I was married. We weren't rolling in cash. This was going to be my last demo—and ‘More Than a Feeling’ was the last one that I completed. Epic Records got that song and a couple of weeks later, Brad Delp and I had an offer to become recording artists.”

Scholz once noted that Epic Records executives had previously passed on his music.

“Epic flat-out rejected it and sent me an insulting letter!” Scholz told Maximum Guitar of his early demos, per Music Radar. "Then later, someone went through the proper political channels with Epic and all of a sudden, they were interested. Still, we didn’t get signed until they heard ‘More Than A Feeling.'"

Scholz said he was thankful that fans still love the song decades later.

Delp also talked about the song's longevity. In a 1999 interview posted by Melodic.net, he said, “I’ve had many people come up and say that ‘More Than A Feeling’ was their song when they were in high school or college. It's nice to feel that you’ve touched so many people in some small way."

The song seemingly inspired a future iconic rock riff

Boston went on to inspire future rock bands. Fifteen years  after “More Than a Feeling" was released, Nirvana ushered in the mainstream grunge scene with their song “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

Some fans thought the guitar riff in the Nirvana song sounded like the famous riff in “More Than a Feeling” in a different key.

Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain later noted the similarity, telling Rolling Stone, “It was such a cliched riff. It was so close to a Boston riff or ‘Louie Louie.’ When I came up with the guitar part, Krist [Novoselic] looked at me and said, ‘That is so ridiculous.'”

Nirvana further embraced the Boston connection by playing “More Than a Feeling” to a crowd at the Reading Festival in the UK in 1992.

Scholz didn’t consider Nirvana’s riff to be a ripoff. He told the outlet he took the similarity as “a major compliment even if it was completely accidental.”

“It made me feel good that Nirvana listened to Boston at all and ever wanted to mention it,” Scholz told Classic Rock in 2006.

But after you're done reading it, it's hard to find something that even comes close. For a lot of Heated Rivalry fans, that probably sounds all too familiar. After devouring that novel—and most likely the rest in the Game Changers series it belongs to (by Nova Scotia author Rachel Reid), you're probably looking for other books like Heated Rivalry to really scratch that itch.

Nothing has hit quite like this series's success. The niche, queer-sports romance books have crossed over into mainstream audiences, even spawning the first season of the hit show by Canadian streaming service, Crave. American audiences were then introduced to Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov in late 2025 when HBO Max brought the series to its platform.

Heated Rivalry is the second book in the Game Changers series, which is currently comprised of six novels, two of which are about Shane and Ilya directly. Reid is working on a third book about the fictional couple (and the seventh in the series)—it's coming out in June 2027, which is later than originally expected due to the sudden fame and also Reid's Parkinson's symptoms, which she was diagnosed with in 2023, according to the Associated Press.

The foundational gay hockey romance series, though, has taken the literary world by storm. Perhaps most likely because it intertwines secrecy and love affairs, a tension that says, "We shouldn’t be doing this," according to public librarian Brynn Hurley, who goes by the TikTok handle @brynn.hb.

So, if you need more books likeHeated Rivalry (for fans who just can't get enough of similar genres and character arcs!) that you can go read right now, she shares several with Parade.

What Is ‘Heated Rivalry’ by Rachel Reid?

First published in 2019, the book Heated Rivalry tells the story of two rival professional hockey players, Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov. In the series, Hollander is a Canadian player who plays for the fictional team, Montreal Voyageurs, while Rozanov, a Russian athlete, plays for the fictional Boston Bears.

Both players are huge hockey stars, but harbor a secret: their casual, albeit spicy romance that turns into something big and real.

The series TV adaptation follows the same plot line, played by Hudson Williams (Hollander) and Connor Storrie (Rozanov), and the rest is history. It eventually turned into a huge cultural phenomenon, showcasing a queer sports story that hasn’t typically been seen before.

The book’s general story has introduced overdue conversations on LGBTQ+ representation in the sports world, with queer romance becoming a huge sub-genre lately, according to the University of Alberta

Hurley agrees with that notion, saying that the book series isn't just about a sports romance.

"From a reader’s advisory perspective, Heated Rivalry isn’t just 'a hockey romance,'" the librarian shares. "It’s really about emotional intensity, secrecy and long-term tension between two people who can’t quite let each other go."

What Kind of Books Feel Like ‘Heated Rivalry’?

Is this series too niche to replicate? Do similar books have to have a queer romance element, mixed with an athletic storyline?

It might depend on who you ask, but Hurley says "appeal factors" have a lot to do with this. Some of those factors include a "high-intensity, character-driven romance, often rivals-to-lovers or forbidden," she shares.

An "emotional arc that spans time," as well as "some level of secrecy," are also good elements to look out for when choosing a book that feels comparable.

While not needing to be exclusively revolving around an LGBTQ+ storyline, some of those factors are what fans of Heated Rivalry loved most about the books and the TV series. Hurley says these aspects matter when it comes to appeal.

"Queer romances often capture that same tension and stakes, especially around visibility and identity, while sports settings naturally heighten rivalry, pressure and public scrutiny," she explains. "That being said, I’d still recommend non-sports or even non-queer titles if they deliver the same emotional payoff and intensity because I feel like that’s really what readers are chasing."

It's so true that some of us would love the chance to read Heated Rivalry for the very first time again. But if you've already read it and are craving something with similar tensions, vibes and storylines, Hurley gives some suggestions for your next big read.

1. 'Him' by Sarina Bowen & Elle Kennedy

Amazon

This hockey romance is a sports-related gem of a find for anyone who liked Heated Rivalry. The Him book series tells the story of two former friends who later reconnect in adulthood, when their college teams are about to face each other at a championship.

“It has strong emotional history and chemistry, making it a good fit for readers who liked the relationship depth in Heated Rivalry," says Hurley. “But it’s less centered on secrecy.”

2. 'Gravity' by Tal Bauer

Amazon

This book is a great example of a “hockey romance that explores identity and being openly queer in professional sports,” according to Hurley.

“It matches the emotional stakes and pressures of a high-profile athletic career, though it’s more about visibility than a hidden relationship,” she shares.

3. 'The Foxhole Court' by Nora Sakavic

Amazon

Another gay male sports-focused tale that is just as character-driven as Heated Rivalry, The Foxhole Court is the first book in the All for the Game series. The premiere story may feel like déjà vu for Heated Rivalry fans, since it focuses on many of the book's similar aspects.

The first three books in the series revolve around Neil Josten, who is the son of a murderer on the run. As part of his fake identity, he signs up with his college team's "Exy" team, a fictional sport that resembles a cross between lacrosse and hockey. Not only does he stay on the team to keep hiding who he really is, but to get closer to the goalkeeper, Andrew Minyard.

“Romance is secondary, but the intense rivalries, loyalty and long-term character arcs will appeal to readers who liked the emotional investment of Heated Rivalry," says Hurley.

4. 'Red, White & Royal Blue' by Casey McQuiston

Amazon

In a book that may just be the royal alternative to Heated Rivalry, this novel centers around the fictional first son of the United States, Alex Claremont-Diaz, and his rival—and romantic interest, eventually—a British monarch, the fictional Prince Henry of England.

While not as spicy as Heated Rivalry, Hurley assures that it contains a relationship that must be kept under wraps from their public and royal subjects.

"The secret relationship and public scrutiny create similar tension, but the tone is lighter and more rom-com-leaning," Hurley states.

5. 'Captive Prince' by C. S. Pacat

Amazon

In the first book of the Captive Prince trilogy, a prince named Damen is sent to live in a rival kingdom, where he has to work as a slave and hide his true identity. While navigating the court and other struggles, he must also deal with the growing tension between him and the powerful Prince Laurent as feelings begin to shift between the two.

The book is what Hurley calls a "fantasy enemies-to-lovers story with a slow-burn relationship that develops over a trilogy."

"The dynamic is more political and power-driven, but it shares the long-term tension and complicated emotional evolution," she notes.

6. 'The Favorites' by Layne Fargo

Amazon

Anyone who enjoyed reading the heated, but passionate relationship between Shane and Ilya will find something to read on about in this sports romance pick by Layne Fargo.

"A toxic, obsessive relationship set against a competitive backdrop," Hurley says about this novel. "The rivalry, ambition and emotional volatility make it a great fit for readers who liked the intensity of Shane and Ilya."

7. 'You Should See Me in a Crown' by Leah Johnson

Amazon

You Should See Me in a Crown explores themes in Heated Rivalry such as discovering yourself and wanting to be heard.

The book follows a high school student named Liz who is running for prom queen, and hopes to win a college scholarship. While dealing with internet trolls, catty girls and popularity, she starts to fall for the new girl in school.

"It’s much lighter in tone," says Hurley of this YA novel. "But it still explores identity, visibility and being seen, offering a softer connection."

Firefly

The O.G. Firefly — the Joss Whedon-created space Western that ran on FOX for 14 episodes in 2002 — might have been short-lived but it's remained much-loved by fans over the years, thanks to its strong ensemble (Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk and Morena Baccarin among its stars), witty writing and immersive fantasy world. Happily, the cult classic is coming back as a new animated series with the original cast returning.

Amazon Prime Video

My Lady Jane

Just as sumptuous and swoon-worthy as Bridgerton, Prime Video's My Lady Jane reimagined the life of Lady Jane Grey as a historical fantasy romance starring Emily Bader as the title character and Edward Bluemel as the lord she's forced to marry while caught up in a sneaky plan to rob her cousin, King Edward VI, of his throne. ABC Family canceled the beloved ballet dramedy Bunheads after one season.

ABC Family

Bunheads

Amy Sherman-Palladino found great TV success with Gilmore Girls and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel but when it comes to her equally great ballet-focused titles, much less so: Both Bunheads (the 2012 ABC Family dramedy about a former professional Las Vegas showgirl who teaches dance in a sleepy, coastal California town) and last year's Étoile (a Prime Video series about two world-renowned dance companies who trade their most talented stars to drum up interest in the failing institutions) sadly never made it to a second season.

However, we only got to watch Julie and company rock out for nine episodes, as the streamer canceled the series after one season in December 2021.

Netflix got rid of its Lord of the Flies-esque teen thriller The Society due to COVID-19 delays.

Netflix

The Society

A little bit Lord of the Flies, a little bit of Yellowjackets, this 2019 teen thriller centers on a group of high schoolers (led by Kathryn Newton, Gideon Adlon, Sean Berdy, Natasha Liu Bordizzo and Jacques Climon) who returned from a canceled field trip to find their parents, teachers and all other adults gone and a mysterious, confining forest in their wake, forcing the kiddos to form their own society to survive. The series was initially picked up for a season two, which was ultimately thwarted by COVID-19-related delays.

Starring Michael Raymond-James and Donal Logue, FX's Terriers is another great show that got away.

FX

Terriers

The critically acclaimed, Ted Griffin-created crime comedy stars Donal Logue as Hank Dolworth, an ex-cop who finds an unlikely partner for his unlicensed private-eye business: his BFF Britt Pollack (Michael Raymond-James), who's had his fair share of run-ins with the law. Over 13 episodes, the quirky neo-noir sees the pseudo detectives take on cases that deal with everyone from missing persons to the Mexican cartel.

Sophia Lillis and Wyatt Oleff in the Netflix coming-of-age comedy I Am Not Okay With This.

Netflix

I Am Not Okay With This

Netflix is no stranger to telekinetic teens (hi Eleven!), but it found a particularly great one in Sophia Lillis' Syd Novak. Grieving her father while navigating family drama and growing pains, the angsty 17-year-old discovers that those strong teenager emotions are fueling some emerging superpowers. The dark comedy earned positive response from critics but was yet another casualty of the COVID pandemic and was canceled after one season in August 2020.

She seeks financial revenge by rising up the ranks at Founders American Merchandise, the cult-like pyramid scheme that caused the couple's money problems in the first place. The series was renewed from a second season in September 2019, but Showtime reversed the renewal, citing COVID challenges.

Still, the atmospheric show — which follows an archivist (Mamoudou Athie) who gets pulled into the mystery of a missing grad-school filmmaker (Dina Shihabi) — was axed after just one season in March 2022.

Despite being dubbed "brisk and funny, warm and wonderfully oddball" by critics like Entertainment Weekly's Kristen Baldwin, the crime comedy couldn't outrun a Netflix cancellation.

Starring Karl Urban as a police detective and Michael Ealy as his android partner, this sci-fi crime drama was almost great, with its fun buddy-cop dynamic and high-quality, world-building effects. (It received an Emmy nod for Outstanding Special and Visual Effects.) Alas, it didn't last more than 13 episodes on FOX.

Hulu canceled Reboot, with Alyah Chanelle Scott (left) and Judy Greer (right), after one season.

Hulu

Reboot

Despite a stacked comedic cast (including Keegan-Michael Key, Johnny Knoxville, Rachel Bloom and Judy Greer) and positive reviews from critics (who appreciated the show's meta self-deprecation), the Hulu series Reboot couldn't secure a second season on the streamer. However, it's still an enjoyable watch, following the dysfunctional cast of an early-2000s sitcom who get a second chance at stardom when the old comedy gets revived for a reboot, all of their lingering personal problems be damned.

(The series has a 90% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.) Alas, criticism from the U.S. government, who weren't happy about the series' "woke" portrayal of military service, reportedly played a part in the show getting discharged.

But for all of its "sex, drugs and rock 'n roll" decadence, the series didn't get past the A-side; in June, HBO reversed its second-season pick-up and canceled Vinyl.

The Brothers Sun

After his crime-boss father is shot, eldest son Charlie Sun (Justin Chien) returns to Los Angeles to protect his younger brother (Sam Song Li) and mother (Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh) from a mystery assassin. Critics praised the show's "terrific cast" and "inspired fight choreography" — it earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Stunt Coordination for Comedy Programming — but The Brothers Sun was still axed after only a single season.

Courtney B. Vance, Jonathan Majors and Jurnee Smollett star in the HBO horror series Lovecraft Country. Lovecraft Country

Given all of the awards love it received (it earned 18 Emmy nominations and won two, and scored Critics Choice wins for lead actress Jurnee Smollett, supporting actor Michael K. Williams and the show itself for Best Horror Series), it was a bit of a surprise that HBO didn't continue on with the historical fantasy drama following its first season. Grosse Pointe was a memorable teen-soap satire that aired on The WB for just 17 episodes.

The WB

Grosse Pointe

Not to be confused with the recent Grosse Pointe Garden Society (which, funnily enough, was also canceled after only one season), the Darren Starr-created Grosse Pointe was a WB sitcom that sharply satirized — what else? — WB sitcoms. A "sassy, catty riot," per TIME, the show centered on five actors starring in a 90210-esque high school drama, but it didn't last nearly as long as the types of series it was making fun of and was canceled 17 episodes in February 2001.

It would sadly also be one of Duncan's final acting roles, as the performer passed away four months after The Finder's series finale.

Despite its intriguing premise and cool 1970s atmosphere, the neo-noir's cancellation was announced in May 2016.

Netflix's Everything Sucks sees drama students and AV club members team up to make a movie.

Netflix

Everything Sucks

It did definitely suck when Netflix tanked this delightful teen comedy, set in mid-1990s Oregon and focusing on a group of misfit students (Jahi Di'Allo Winston, Peyton Kennedy and Quinn Liebling among them) at Boring High School who band together to make a movie all while navigating growing pains, adolescent awkwardness and more. The coming-of-age show was positively compared toStranger Things and Degrassi, yet only survived for a single season on the streamer.

A.J. Langer, Wilson Cruz, Devon Gummersall, Claire Danes and Sharon Cherski appeared in the classic teen drama My So-Called Life.

My So-Called Life

Few series feel as iconically '90s at My So-Called Life, which made a star of then-teenaged lead Claire Danes — who earned a Golden Globe for his portrayal of 15-year-old Angela Chase — and was a lovingly relatable take on the lives of suburban high schoolers (played by Jared Leto, Wilson Cuz, Devon Gummersall and A.J. Langer). Situated Between Seattle and Portland Is a Pacific Northwest Haven With Towering Pines, Craft Bakeries, and Ocean Views

Sun, 03/29/2026 - 5:20am

One minute you’re on the highway, moving with purpose. The next, the road opens, the air turns salt-laced, and everything around you feels quieter, wider, almost suspended. Just like that, you’ve arrived on a narrow stretch of land where the Pacific stretches endlessly west and the pace of everything slows to match it.

I’ve always been drawn to dramatic coastlines, and the Long Beach Peninsula didn’t disappoint. Andi Day, Executive Director of the Long Beach Peninsula Visitors Bureau, states “The simplicity and magnificence of our beach is what makes a visit here so appealing to many busy families. Families always value the time they make to get back to the beach, where day-to-day stresses fall away as soon as toes touch the sand.”

Long Beach, Washington doesn’t try to impress you. It doesn’t need to. Instead, it draws you in slowly, rewarding the kind of traveler willing to notice the details. Even from a distance, it feels like a reset, less about escape, more about easing into a rhythm you didn’t realize you were missing.

Walking the Longest Continuous Beach in the U.S.

The Long Beach Peninsula stretches roughly 28 miles along the Pacific, forming one of the longest continuous sand beaches in the country. The beach itself feels less like a destination and more like an atmosphere. Wide, flat, and often misty, it invites wandering. People drive along the sand, but walking is where it reveals itself. You start to notice the small things: razor clam shells half-buried in wet sand, the sound of wind threading through dune grass, the way the horizon disappears into fog.

There’s also something deeply communal about the openness. Families fly kites, a tradition rooted in the region’s steady coastal winds and celebrated each year during the Washington State International Kite Festival. Even on an ordinary afternoon, the sky carries color.

Forest, Fog, and the Feeling of Being Small (In the Best Way)

Step away from the shoreline and the peninsula changes character entirely. One minute, you’re walking along open sand. The next, you’re on a narrow trail threading through towering pines. At places like Pacific Pines State Park, a sandy path cuts through a quiet grove before spilling back out onto the ocean. It’s a transition that feels almost cinematic.

What stands out most about the peninsula is its layering. To the west, the Pacific stretches outward, restless and gray. To the east, Willapa Bay sits calmer, an enormous estuary shaped by tides and time. The peninsula itself acts as a barrier between the two, creating ecosystems that feel entirely different despite being just miles apart.

Willapa Bay is one of the most productive shellfish regions in the country, supplying a significant share of the nation’s oysters. The bay’s shallow, nutrient-rich waters support both industry and biodiversity, filtering water and sustaining wildlife in ways that are easy to overlook if you’re just passing through.

Further north, protected lands like the Willapa National Wildlife Refuge shelter migratory birds, salmon, and coastal species that rely on this fragile balance.

A Town That Feels Like a Memory You Haven’t Had Yet

Long Beach itself is small, fewer than 2,000 residents, but it carries an outsized personality. Travel resources describe Long Beach as a small town with “fun festivals and tons of unique attractions,” highlighting its compact size and charm. Long Beach’s development as a seaside vacation spot dates back to the early 1800s and attractions like the historic boardwalk and Marsh’s Free Museum reflect that heritage and local personality.

And then there’s the food. This is where the peninsula quietly surprises visitors. Oysters harvested just miles away. Cranberries grown in nearby bogs. It’s not flashy dining, but local and deeply tied to the landscape.

Why Long Beach Stays With You

Long Beach, Washington leaves a lasting impression because of its unique combination of geography, ecology, and community. The peninsula’s long sandy beach and adjacent forests provide both recreational space and important wildlife habitat, while Willapa Bay supports one of the nation’s most productive oyster-growing regions.

For travelers, the appeal lies in this balance: natural landscapes, working environments, and living history coexist seamlessly, creating an experience that is both engaging and quietly distinctive.

This New Mexico Secret Is the ‘American Serengeti’ You’ve Never Seen

Sun, 03/29/2026 - 5:02am

If you’ve ever felt like the word "luxury" has lost its meaning in a sea of overstuffed lobbies and performative gold leaf, you aren't alone. In the heart of New Mexico, across 1.1 million acres of what has been called the “American Serengeti,” a different kind of high-end experience is taking root—one where the true amenity isn't a pillow menu, but the sheer, silent scale of a restored wilderness.

Ted Turner Reserves isn't a traditional hotel collection; it’s a decades-long conservation miracle that just happens to invite you in for the night. Born from Ted Turner’s 1992 vision to "save everything," these four properties—Vermejo, Ladder, Armendaris and Sierra Grande—offer a profound redefinition of travel. As Jade McBride, President of Ted Turner Reserves, puts it, Ted didn’t set out to build a luxury destination—he "set out to restore something that had been lost."

Stewardship at Scale

For over 30 years, these landscapes were painstakingly brought back to life, rebuilding ecosystems that had been fragmented for generations. The hospitality arm, launched more intentionally in 2019, exists as a gateway to that work. McBride notes that the mission was always about "restoring wildlife, protecting watersheds and rebuilding ecosystems." By opening these gates to guests, the hope is that the land does the heavy lifting of inspiration. "If people can experience a place like this, not just see it but feel it, they don’t leave unchanged," McBride says. "And that’s where conservation actually begins."

Whether you're tracking elk with expert biologists or fly-fishing for the Rio Grande cutthroat trout—a species Turner’s initiatives helped pull back from the brink—the beauty of the Reserves is found in the quiet moments. It’s the kind of place where you might "come across the high alpine Casias Lake while hiking" or find yourself "standing on top of Castle Rock" simply absorbing the vastness. According to McBride, "the most powerful places... are often the ones you discover in the moment." This environment forces a physical shift in the traveler; "your pace naturally slows, and when your pace changes, your perspective does too."

Understated Elegance

When it comes to the design of the guest rooms, lounges and dining spaces, the goal was to create something that "belongs here" rather than competes with the horizon. The design team looked to the past—specifically how Native American and Spanish communities lived on this land—to ensure the experience felt grounded and authentic. You won't find excess for the sake of it. "Everything is intentionally understated so the land remains the focal point," McBride explains. In his view, the future of luxury is "not to add more, but to strip away distraction." It’s a philosophy that prioritizes "connection to the land, to the people you are with, and to yourself" over traditional consumption.

Dining and the "Relationship" Stay

The culinary experience follows suit, pulling from the landscape’s history and materials to restore a true sense of place. But don't expect to "finish" the Reserves in a single weekend. While a week-long stay allows you to finally unplug, the brand views its guests more as long-term partners than temporary visitors. Because wildlife patterns shift and landscapes evolve with the seasons, "the real intention is not just a visit," McBride says, "it is a relationship." It’s an invitation to return year after year to watch the land continue its journey of restoration—and perhaps, in the process, find a bit of that restorative magic in yourself.
