NBC host Sara Gore has an uplifting health update to share, and she couldn't be happier to share it.

The host of Open House and New York Live, 50, took to Instagram on Sunday, July 12, to reveal she has officially been declared cancer-free. The positive health update comes after a 10-week leave of absence from both shows while she underwent treatment for breast cancer.

Alongside a photo of herself relaxing in a garden, the mom of three shared how far she's come. "I'm doing really well," she wrote. "Currently cancer free. Hallelujah."

She added that she remains in the reconstruction phase of her treatment and expects that process to continue for several more months, but described real progress along the way. "It's truly a journey," she wrote. "Healing has taken some time, but every week I've felt a little more like me again."

Gore didn't hold back in expressing her thanks to the people who helped carry her through treatment. "Thank you for the books. The food. The flowers. The prayers. The puzzles. The cards. The texts. The calls. Every thoughtful gesture that came my way. I felt EVERY bit of it," she wrote. "You carried me through some really hard days, and I'll never forget your kindness." 

She also confirmed she'll be heading back to both New York Live and Open House soon, adding that she "honestly can't wait" to return. For now, she's savoring the slower pace. "Until then, I'm soaking up these last few slow mornings appreciating all the moments that usually move by too fast to notice," she wrote. "It's good to be here. I love you all."

How Gore First Shared Her Diagnosis With Viewers View this post on Instagram

Gore's cancer journey became public back on April 30, when she told viewers about her diagnosis live during an episode of New York Live. "It just felt right to tell you myself. I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, and I'm going to be stepping away for treatment and surgery," she said at the time. "If I didn't say that I was a little bit scared, I'd be lying."

She also opened up about her family history, revealing that both her mother and sister had previously been diagnosed with breast cancer. "I always knew I was high-risk," she said. "I always assumed this day would come. But let me tell you, you are never ready." 

Even catching it early didn't soften the emotional weight of the news. "For some reason, even when you catch it early because you're doing everything right, it is an emotional blow," she said. "I wasn't ready for that. That actually really surprised me. It really stung."

At the time, Gore didn't go into detail about her treatment plan, only that she needed time to rest and heal. She ended her on-air revelation with a promise to her viewers. "I'm going to come back better than ever, and I'm going to see you on the other side of this," she said. "Thank you for all you've done."

Through it all, Gore leaned on her husband, filmmaker and director Matthew Miele, and their three children, sons Griffin and Sawyer and daughter Fiona.

Kaitlin Butts put a fresh female spin on the Danny Flowers country classic, “Tulsa Time,” on Friday, July 10, during her live performance at the Hartford HealthCare Amphitheater in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

The weekend stop saw her serving as a special guest on Dierks Bentley’s headlining 2026 Off The Map Tour, which launched on June 12 in Rogers, Ark., and also includes a rotating lineup of openers like Cole Goodwin, Owen Riegling, and Mountain Grass Unit. 

For the special cover, Butts was joined by legendary bluegrass player Ricky Skaggs and Bentley, who added harmony and accompaniment throughout the song. A video shared by one fan on TikTok shows a portion of the performance, with Butts belting out the lyrics while wearing a light-purple mini dress paired with an oversized belt and cowgirl hat.

Butts's singing of “Tulsa Time” has been a highlight in her setlists, as she has added the tune to her concerts in the past. In 2025, she shared the stage with Lainey Wilson for a duet performance of the song during a stop on Wilson’s Whirlwind World Tour. Butts also recorded a studio version of “Tulsa Time” for her Yeehaw Sessions EP, which can be heard here. 

“Tulsa Time,” which has been ranked at No. 132 on Rolling Stone’s '200 Greatest Country Songs of All Time' list,  has a unique backstory. 

According toAmerican Songwriter, Flowers — the guitarist for Don Williams — drew inspiration for the track during a hotel stay in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in which the band was hunkered down due to bad weather. The song was written in just 30 minutes, but the decision on who would release the song may have taken a little bit longer.  

One day, after Williams opened a show for Eric Clapton as a supporting act, the two, along with Flowers, got into a jam session that included them playing “Tulsa Time.” Although Williams already had dibs on the song, Clapton also showed interest, which resulted in the two reportedly arguing over who would get to cut it, according to Wide Open Country.  

"I just put both hands up and said, 'Stop!" Flowers explained, per Rolling Stone. "If you are going to fight about it, I'm not going to let either one of you do it."

In the end, both icons went on to record the track, with Williams putting his out first. He released his take in 1978 for his Expressions album, and in 1979 the single became a massive hit, topping the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and becoming the No. 1 Billboard Country Song of that year. 

Clapton’s take, while still loved by fans, didn’t reach No. 1 on any chart. However, he did record two versions, one for his Backless album and a second for his Just One Night album, the latter of which reached No. 30 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Forty-eight years ago today, beloved singer Andy Gibb topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart with his iconic song "Shadow Dancing."

Released on April 4, 1978 as the title track and lead single from his second studio album, "Shadow Dancing" became a massive hit. The track climbed the Billboard Hot 100, claiming the top spot just two months later on June 17.

The song dominated the chart for seven consecutive weeks, marking the third No. 1 single of Gibb's career. The achievement made him the first solo artist in history to top the charts with his first three singles, solidifying his status as a legendary solo act outside of his brothers' massively successful trio, the Bee Gees.

Aside from its undeniable chart success, "Shadow Dancing" also experienced significant commercial triumph. On May 19, 1978, the track was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for selling over 2.5 million copies. Its staggering sales demand named the track the best-selling single in America for the entirety of 1978.

"Shadow Dancing" was co-written by Gibb and his older brothers Barry, Maurice and Robin when he was only 19 years old. The song was released just one month after his 20th birthday and cemented his place in music history alongside his famous siblings.

The single explored the exhilarating feeling of locking eyes with someone attractive while dancing at a club. Its playful lyrics about a fleeting intimate moment on the dance floor paired beautifully with its upbeat pop-rock production. Utilizing a funk-infused bassline, soaring string arrangements and smooth vocal harmonies, the song delivered a sound that perfectly bridged the gap between traditional rock and peak disco.

Nearly five decades after its release, "Shadow Dancing" remains a staple of disco and pop-rock fusion. The track continues to preserve among both older generations and modern demographics through streaming platforms, raking in over 40 million listens on Spotify alone.

Madonna is proving once again why she's earned the title of the Queen of Pop. The music icon has officially landed her 10th No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 as her latest release, CONFESSIONS II, debuted at the top of the chart with 134,000 equivalent album units earned during its first week.

The achievement marks more than just another chart-topper. According to Billboard, Madonna has become the first artist ever to score a No. 1 album across four different decades: the 1980s, 2000s, 2010s and now the 2020s. The milestone also places her in elite company. Madonna is now just the fourth artist to earn at least 10 No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 and 10 No. 1 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, joining The Beatles, Taylor Swift and Drake.

Released on July 3, CONFESSIONS II serves as the long-awaited sequel to Madonna's 2005 dance-pop hit Confessions on a Dance Floor and reunites her with longtime collaborator Stuart Price. The album was led by the single "Bring Your Love," featuring Sabrina Carpenter. It marked Madonna's biggest streaming week ever for an album, her strongest pure album sales week in more than a decade and her largest vinyl sales week since modern sales tracking began in 1991.

With CONFESSIONS II, Madonna also earned her first Billboard 200 No. 1 since 2019's Madame X, extending a chart-topping career that began with 1985's Like a Virgin. The new album joins an impressive list of Madonna's Billboard 200 No. 1 albums, including True Blue, Like a Prayer, Music, American Life, Confessions on a Dance Floor, Hard Candy, MDNA, and Madame X.

More than four decades after launching one of pop music's most influential careers, Madonna continues to make everyone want to get up and dance, one chart milestone at a time.

More than five decades after Badfinger first released "Without You," Steelheart has shared a new version of the classic rock ballad.

Released on July 10, the recording features frontman Miljenko Matijevic alongside a 40-piece orchestra. According to Blabbermouth, Matijevic considers it the most emotional vocal performance he has ever recorded.

Although Steelheart's version is only now being released, Matijevic originally recorded it in 1996. The track remained unreleased for 30 years before the singer decided it was finally time for fans to hear it.

"Without You" was written by Badfinger members Pete Ham and Tom Evans and first appeared on the band's 1970 album No Dice. The original recording was never released as a single, but the song later became a major hit through versions by Harry Nilsson and Mariah Carey.

Nilsson's 1971 recording reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, turning the song into an international success. More than two decades later, Carey's version topped charts across Europe and introduced "Without You" to another generation of listeners.

Steelheart's new release arrives as the band continues revisiting its own past. The group recently launched its SteelHeart 30 campaign, which includes re-recorded songs, remixes, orchestral performances and a limited run of signed vinyl records.

The band's self-titled debut album was released in 1990 and reached No. 40 on the Billboard 200. It featured songs including "I'll Never Let You Go (Angel Eyes)" and "She's Gone," which became one of Steelheart's biggest international hits.

Matijevic has remained active in music well beyond Steelheart's early success. He provided the singing voice for Mark Wahlberg's character in the 2001 film Rock Star and later performed with Doors members Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger. He is also working on a new hard rock project with guitarist Niclas Engelin.

Steelheart's release gives "Without You" another interpretation 56 years after Badfinger first recorded it. With Matijevic's vocals backed by a full orchestra, the band has finally shared a performance that had been waiting three decades to be heard.

This fall, another of his legendary records, Buddha and the Chocolate Box, will be newly remastered and officially reissued. Slated for a Sept. 4 release, the record will be available in various formats, including digital, CD, standard black vinyl, and a limited-edition chocolate-brown vinyl.

The reissue follows a string of releases from the British singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist behind some of the era's most defining anthems. Last year, he released his career-spanning compilation album, On the Road to Findout: Greatest Hits, followed by his long-awaited memoir, Cat on the Road to Findout: The Official Autobiography.

Cat Stevens, also known as Yusuf Islam, has sold more than 100 million records worldwide and attracted billions of streams across digital platforms. With a catalog spanning folk and rock to pop and spiritually inspired music, the artist has released 17 studio albums, one soundtrack, six live albums, and dozens of compilations.

His sixth studio album, Buddha and the Chocolate Box, was released in 1974 at the peak of his popularity. Returning to his acoustic folk style, the record features hit songs “Home in the Sky,” “Oh Very Young,” “Sun/C79,” “A Bad Penny,” and “Ghost Town,” and peaked on the Billboard 200 at No. 2 while earning platinum certification in the U.S.

“Buddha and the Chocolate Box reopened the doors of my familiar melodious soft delivery and sentiments,” Stevens said in his autobiography last year, per Far Out. “Although still experimental in compositional terms, it was what most of my fans desperately wanted to hear next.”

He added, “Following on from Foreigner, the Buddha album proved—especially to those who had no faith—that the missing Cat had simply wandered away from home for a while. My principle of independence was asserted, as with most cats, don’t ever dare think you own them! As far as the critics were concerned, album-wise, it marked my heralded return to ‘Cat Stevens’ form.”

Mitch McConnell is finally sharing new details about the health scare that led to his hospitalization last month, putting weeks of online speculation to rest.

In a statement released on Sunday, July 12 per AP, the 84-year-old Kentucky senator confirmed for the first time that he was hospitalized after suffering a fall. He said doctors have conducted a series of tests as they continue working to determine what caused the incident, adding that he is currently recovering at a rehabilitation center and is "not returning to the Senate quite yet."

McConnell acknowledged that many people had questions during his lengthy absence, explaining why he initially chose to remain private about his condition. "Folks of my generation often hesitate to share the vulnerability that comes with growing older," he said. "Even in the public eye, I feel that same instinct—I can't help it."

The statement also included a smiling photo of McConnell alongside his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, seemingly addressing widespread online rumors that he had died or was incapacitated while hospitalized. 

Although he isn't back in Washington yet, McConnell said he continues working with his staff on Senate matters during his recovery.

McConnell's update comes on the same day the Senate was rocked by another major health story. Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina died at age 71 after what his office described as a "brief and sudden illness." 

According to NBC News, emergency responders were dispatched to Graham's Washington, D.C., home after reports of chest pains and cardiac arrest. His office said no further details about his cause of death are being released at this time. Graham had reportedly met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy just one day before his death and had been scheduled to appear on Meet the Press on Sunday morning.

President Trump—who spoke with Graham just hours before his death—paid his respects by saying on Truth Social, “Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known, is dead! He was always working, and was a true American Patriot. Lindsey will be greatly missed!!! DETAILS AND ARRANGEMENTS TO FOLLOW. So sad!” He followed up with a second post announcing that he’s ordering all American Flags to be lowered to half-mast through next Saturday.

"Angel of the Morning" remains one of the defining love songs of the early '80s. Many fans assume Juice Newton originated the song; however, several artists had already recorded it in the 60s and 70s before Newton put her signature stamp on it in 1981. Newton's country-pop version became the one that finally turned the song into a crossover smash.

The Song's Long Journey

"Angel of the Morning" was written by songwriter Chip Taylor in 1967 and was first offered to Connie Francis, but the popular singer thought the message was too risqué for her image, as its lyrics were interpreted by many as a candid depiction of a one-night stand.

“People thought it was just a roll in the hay but I didn’t mean it like that at all," Taylor later told The Guardian. "This was the most powerful love of two people who may never see each other again — they would love each other forever and beyond time. It was a very serious song.”

The song was soon recorded by artists including Evie Sands, Billie Davis and P. P. Arnold. But it wasn't until Merrilee Rush released her version in 1968 that it became a Top 10 hit, reaching No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. Over the next decade, artists including Dusty Springfield and Olivia Newton-John also recorded it, yet none matched the crossover success Juice Newton would achieve in 1981.

Why Juice Newton's Version Clicked

At first, Newton wasn't sold on the song. She told Mr. Media: “Steve Mayer brought us the song when we were already in the studio. I really didn’t like the song. I wasn’t that aware of it."

Newton believed there had to be a compelling reason to record someone else's song. "Of course, you listen to the original, to see if there’s something on there that you want to include in your own interpretation. lf you don’t think you can make a better record than the original, you shouldn’t touch it.”

She ultimately proved herself right. Newton blended country warmth with a polished pop production that came at exactly the right cultural moment. Her expressive vocal performance, the song's emotional honesty, and the gentle wash of electric guitar and strings sealed the deal for fans.

Newton attributed the song's success, in part, to her well-timed partnership with producer Richard Landis, and called it "my lucky break." She told Review mag, "The timing was just so lucky as we were both available at the same time — doesn’t always happen ... I consider that excellent timing."

The Crossover Breakthrough

Juice Newton's cover of "Angel of the Morning" was released in February 1981 as the lead single from her sixth studio album, Juice. Her version earned crossover success, reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 22 on the Billboard Country music chart and spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.

The song earned Newton a Grammy nomination for "Best Female Pop Vocal Performance" at the 24th Annual Grammy Awards.

Newton's music video for "Angel of the Morning" is often credited as the first country music video to ever air on MTV in 1981; however, some country purists argue was not a true country music video due to the song's heavy pop influence.

Why the Juice Newton Cover Still Resonates

The song's message of embracing love and connection without demanding forever still feels refreshingly honest today. That emotional openness has helped "Angel of the Morning" remain relevant for generation after generation.

In 1995, Chrissie Hynde (of The Pretenders) recorded a version for the hit sitcomFriends. It popped up in the opening credits of Deadpool (2016) and in the ending scene and into the ending credits of Promising Young Woman (2020), as well as in Charlie Wilson's War (2007), It Chapter Two (2019) and Apartment 7a (2024). Then in 2001, Jamaican reggae artist Shaggy released "Angel," which heavily integrated the melody of "Angel of the Morning" and reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The song became one of Newton's signature recordings, and today, it has more than 144 million Spotify streams.

Many talented artists sang "Angel of the Morning," but Juice Newton found the interpretation that resonated most deeply with listeners. More than 40 years later, her version remains the definitive recording and proof that sometimes the right singer arrives at exactly the right moment.

More than 30 years after forming, Hypocrisy is preparing to return to North America.

The Swedish melodic death metal pioneers have announced a run of U.S. and Canadian dates for August 2026, including appearances as special guests on Dimmu Borgir's Grand Serpent Rising Tour as well as four exclusive Hypocrisy headlining shows.

The band shared the news with fans on Instagram, writing:

Formed in 1991 by vocalist and guitarist Peter Tägtgren, Hypocrisy has become one of the defining names in Swedish extreme metal. While the band’s early releases leaned heavily into death metal, it gradually developed a signature sound that blended crushing riffs with memorable melodies and atmospheric songwriting, helping influence generations of melodic death metal acts.

Over the course of its career, Hypocrisy has released a string of acclaimed albums, including Abducted, The Final Chapter, Hypocrisy, Virus and End of Disclosure. Songs such as "Roswell 47," "Fire in the Sky," "Fractured Millennium" and "Eraser" have become staples of the band's live performances.

"You become a little bit more selective and you become more picky of what you write," Tägtgren told Strefa Music Art. "Nothing is ever good enough. So you write more and more and more until... And it takes forever sometimes to... You don't wanna repeat yourself, and you don't wanna sound like shit if you're doing something, because it's so far in between albums. So people expect more. Actor Sacha Baron Cohen just made a surprise appearance at Wimbledon. But fans may not have noticed the celeb seated in the crowd. Why? Because he was fully decked out as the legendary Ali G.

That’s right, Ali G is back and just as satirically streetwise as ever. Baron Cohen’s character rose to fame in the early 2000s on the aptly titled Da Ali G Show. While the three-season series initially found popularity in the UK, American audiences were eventually treated to the mock hip-hop slang-speaking street Baron Cohen persona when the show aired on HBO (2003 to 2004). 

Of course, Ali G’s instant fame didn't stop there. In 2002, the feature film Ali G Indahouse took the breakout comedy star to a whole new level. And it looks like he’s coming back to the big screen. According to recent reports, Baron Cohen has already wrapped filming another Ali G movie. But is there more? 

On Sunday, tennis fans took note of something (or rather, someone) strange. The 54-year-old actor attended the final day of Wimbledon, watching Jannik Sinner’s victory over Alexander Zverev, fully incognito and dressed as his alter-ego. 

If you missed Ali G in the crowd, don’t worry. Baron Cohen posted it on Instagram, saying, “I is here at the men’s singles in Wimbledon.” Ali G comically continues, “It’s like the World Cup of something called tennis, which is like a cr** version of ping pong.” 

In truly Ali G style, he makes a pitch for one of his favorite pastimes, adding, “Them say tennis is better played on grass, which is why I intend to sell as much of it while I is here.” 

While Baron Cohen hasn’t confirmed the rumors that a new movie is ready to go, the caption on his Instagram post pretty much says it all, “I iz BACK! And if u iz at dis borin wimbledon final lookin 2 get grand slammed, I iz here wif de hookup. DM me, especially if u iz fit.”

Fans flocked to Baron Cohen’s post, almost in disbelief that Ali G was really at Wimbledon. One asked, “Is Ali G back? Or is this old? Others replied, “This is right now, he’s at Wimbledon” and “Just wrapped a new Ali G movie.”

Fellow actor Jeremy Piven even chimed in, writing, “Perfect timing…we missed you” while more than a few fans begged to see Ali G back in business, writing comments such as, “Sacha, is that you? Are you really bringing out the one and only G? Yes please” and, “Da legend returns!”

As of now, there is no word on a release date for a new Ali Go movie. But if this Instagram clip is any indication of what’s to come, he could pop up just about anywhere!

The talent will continue to impress judges Simon Cowell, Mel B, Howie Mandel, and Sofia Vergara on Monday night’s America’s Got Talent, and one of the acts that stunned the judges was singer Ashford Sanders, the owner of soul food restaurant Ashford’s Kitchen in Canton, MS.

“It ain’t healthy, but it’s good,” Ashford joked with the judges before performing Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For."

Mel B told the talented singer, “Listen, you were giving me some Luther Vandross, Alexandra O’Neal, Raphael Saadiq, some Tony Toni Tone. You were giving me everything more and the trills and the frills and the oh, yes.”

“Your voice is like a warm blanket,” Howie said. “It just covers you and makes us all comfortable and want to smile. It was beautiful.”

Simon wrapped it up saying, “I think you are a gifted, brilliant singer, no question. Beautiful tone. I mean there are so many  songs out there that you could reinterpret and you come over as a really sweet person, as well. So, I think this is going to go well.”

In 1970, Emerson, Lake & Palmer introduced the world to a ballad that had actually been written years earlier by a 12-year-old boy.

That song was "Lucky Man." Penned by vocalist and bassist Greg Lake during his childhood, the reflective ballad became one of Emerson, Lake & Palmer's signature recordings after appearing on the band's self-titled debut album. More than 50 years later, it remains one of the group's most beloved songs and a defining soft rock anthem.

Lake never expected the song to become a hit for one simple reason: he wrote "Lucky Man" when he was only twelve years-old.

"I was round my friend's house and he had a broken down old guitar," Lake shared during his Songs of a Lifetime tour. "In fact, it only had one string on it. Luckily, it was the bottom string. With a matchstick, I picked out this tune. It made me think, you know, perhaps I could play guitar. So it came to Christmas and I said to my mom, 'Do you think there's any chance of me having a guitar for Christmas?' And she said, 'No.' You know, we were pretty poor. So that was it. I just accepted it."

That might have been the end of the story if it weren't for an unexpected surprise.

"Christmas came, and there it was, the guitar. And of course I was thrilled," Lake continued. "The first four chords I learned were D, A minor, E minor, and G. With these chords I wrote this little song. It's a kids' song, really. And it was a medieval fantasy, really. And I never wrote it on a piece of paper. I just remembered the words."

The simple melody and folk-inspired lyrics stayed with him throughout his teenage years, and when Emerson, Lake & Palmer needed another song to complete their debut album, he revisited the composition he had written as a child.

The recording combined simplicity with innovation.

"When we stared recording the song, it was just acoustic guitar and drums and it sounded pretty dreadful," Lake told Classic Rock Revisited. "Voice, acoustic guitar and drums is not a nice sound. When I put the bass on it then it started sounding like a song. I then put two more tracks of acoustic guitars on it and six tracks of vocal harmony and it really started to sound like a complete record. By the time Keith came back from the pub it was a finished song and he heard it. He said, “I’ve got to play on that.”

For much of its running time, "Lucky Man" unfolds as an understated acoustic ballad, with Lake’s warm vocals telling the story of a wealthy man whose fortune cannot save him from tragedy. The song's gentle melody and introspective lyrics made it accessible to a broad audience, while Keith Emerson’s groundbreaking Moog synthesizer solo at the end added a dramatic flourish that became one of the most recognizable moments in progressive rock.

Listeners quickly embraced the unlikely combination.

Released as a single, "Lucky Man" became Emerson, Lake & Palmer's breakthrough hit, reaching the Top 50 on the Billboard Hot 100 and helping introduce the British supergroup to American audiences. The song demonstrated that the band could balance ambitious musicianship with heartfelt songwriting, a formula that would define much of its early success.

Although Emerson, Lake & Palmer became known for elaborate adaptations of classical works and lengthy instrumental epics, "Lucky Man" remained one of the band’s most enduring recordings. Bad feet run in my family the way good hair or athletic ability runs in other families. My grandmother had them, my mom has them, and my aunt has them. And I, the lucky inheritor of this particular genetic gift, have spent every sandal season of my adult life engaged in a losing battle with my own ugly little dogs.

What Causes Dry and Cracked Heels?

The short version: your heels are dealing with a lot. Dr. Kanwal explains that dry, cracked heels happen when the thick skin on the heel loses moisture and flexibility, and the list of things that accelerate that process is depressingly long—standing, walking barefoot, open-backed shoes, hot showers, pool water and the friction of daily life all contribute.

"All of these insults to the very thin underarm skin add up over time," she says, using language that applies equally to the heel.

Dr. Ponzo adds that the heel's natural disadvantage—fewer oil glands than the rest of the body—makes it inherently more vulnerable. Conditions like eczema, psoriasis, athlete's foot, diabetes and reduced circulation can deepen the problem, particularly when cracks keep returning or refuse to heal. For most people though, the culprit is simply a combination of mechanical stress and not enough moisture to compensate.

What Ingredients Should You Look for in a Foot Cream?

Dr. Ponzo's number one ingredient is urea, full stop. "It acts as both a moisturizer and a gentle exfoliant, helping soften thick, dry skin while drawing moisture into the heel," she explains.

Dr. Kanwal agrees, rounding out the list with lactic acid and salicylic acid for exfoliation, glycerin and hyaluronic acid to attract moisture, and petrolatum, ceramides, shea butter and squalane to repair and seal the skin barrier.

What to avoid is equally important for sensitive or cracked skin. Dr. Kanwal specifically flags fragrance, strong acids on deep or bleeding fissures and anything too aggressive.

"Strong acids should not be used on deep, bleeding, or infected cracks," she cautions. The goal is softening and sealing, not stripping further.

How Often Should You Apply Foot Cream?

Once daily is the baseline, ideally after bathing while skin is still slightly damp. For very dry or cracked heels, Dr. Kanwal recommends twice daily with a thicker layer at night. Dr. Ponzo's preferred routine is the same.

"Apply your foot cream immediately after showering while the skin is still slightly damp," she says, "And for deeper hydration, use a generous layer before bed and wear cotton socks overnight."

Once the heels improve, consistent daily maintenance is usually enough to keep them from reverting.

How To Apply Foot Cream for Best Results

Order matters more than most people realize. Dr. Kanwal's protocol is straightforward. Wash with lukewarm water, pat dry and apply a urea, lactic acid or salicylic acid cream to thick heel skin if it's intact. Follow with a richer cream or ointment to lock in moisture, then wear clean cotton socks overnight.

One important warning she raises: avoid applying heavy products between the toes, which can trap moisture and encourage fungal growth. And put down the blade. Both experts advise against aggressive foot files, blades or harsh scrubs on cracked skin, which can worsen fissures rather than smooth them.

Most cases respond to consistent home care, but there are clear signals that it's time to get professional eyes on the situation. Dr. Kanwal's list of red flags includes cracks that are deep, painful, bleeding, red, warm, swollen, draining or not improving after two to three weeks of consistent treatment.

Dr. Ponzo echoes this, adding that anyone with diabetes, poor circulation, nerve damage or a weakened immune system should seek medical advice earlier rather than later.

"In those cases," Dr. Kanwal explains, "a small crack can become a more serious wound or infection." This is not the category for optimistic waiting.

A prescient vision of a totalitarian regime, it introduced concepts such as Big Brother, thoughtcrime, and Newspeak, as well as themes of manipulation, control, and rebellion—all of which have permeated modern culture as a way to understand surveillance, propaganda, and the decline of truth.

Orwell’s story follows Winston Smith, a low-ranking member of the Outer Party. As a resident of Oceania, one of the three totalitarian states, he lives under the rule of the omnipresent Big Brother and the Thought Police, and works at the Ministry of Truth, a center for revisionism where he’s tasked with modifying history to fit the government’s narrative and ideology.

Longing for truth and decency, however, Winston begins to secretly rebel against the regime by keeping a diary and pursuing a love affair with a woman named Julia, a decision that ultimately leads to his capture and brutal reeducation.

Influenced by real-life horrors that were the result of unchecked power, Orwell wrote 1984 in the immediate aftermath of World War II, drawing on the rise of Stalinism in the Soviet Union and the authoritarian tactics of Nazi Germany.

In a statement explaining the novel after publication—and illustrated in the BBC documentaryOrwell: A Life in Pictures—Orwell warned:

“Allowing for the book, after all, being a parody, something like 1984 could actually happen. This is the direction the world is going at present. In our world, there will be no emotions except fear, rage, triumph, and self-abasement. The sex instinct will be eradicated. We shall abolish the orgasm. There will be no loyalty except loyalty to the Party. But there will always be the intoxication of power. Always, at every moment, there will be the thrill of victory, the sensation of trampling on an enemy who’s helpless. If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face, forever. The moral to be drawn from this dangerous nightmare situation is a simple one: Don’t let it happen. It depends on you.”

In today’s digital era, Orwell’s concepts remain relevant, with readers and scholars alike continuing to invoke the novel in discussions about surveillance, misinformation, censorship, artificial intelligence, and digital privacy. 

The text has motivated countless works in music and film, as well. Music artists like David Bowie and Radiohead have injected Orwell’s dystopian vision into their lyrics, while films like Equilibrium, Eagle Eye, and V for Vendetta echo the classic. 

On television, the reality competition series Big Brother straight lifted its name and concept of—”Big Brother is watching you”—from Orwell’s omnipresent authoritarian figure.

Orwell died in January 1950, but the ideas in his best-known novel persist. Tens of millions of copies later, the novel has been translated into dozens of languages and consistently tops ranking lists--dominance proving Orwell’s warning story remains as relevant as ever.

When it comes to getting enough calcium, what dietary habit comes to mind for you? For many people, it’s drinking milk. (That “Got Milk?” campaign really embedded itself into the psyche of a whole generation.) 

Cow’s milk indeed is one of the top dietary sources of calcium. As a kid, maybe you were required to have a glass of milk at dinner. But there’s a good chance it isn’t something you regularly drink now. This may be one reason why an estimated 42% of U.S. adults don’t get enough calcium.

Milk certainly isn’t the only way to get calcium through diet. Dr. Eric Henderson, MD, an orthopedic oncology surgeon with Dartmouth Health, says that other good sources of calcium besides dairy products include fortified plant milks and cereals, salmon, sardines, tofu and leafy greens.

Especially considering that bone density starts decreasing as early as our 40s, it’s important to prioritize getting enough calcium, a key nutrient for bone health. If you don’t think you’re getting enough, you may be wondering if taking a calcium supplement can help. Before you decide to add a calcium supplement to your diet, it’s helpful to know if it’s actually beneficial. Otherwise, you could be wasting your money and also potentially experiencing unwanted side effects for no reason. 

With this in mind, we asked an orthopedic surgeon and a family practice doctor when (if ever) taking a calcium supplement can be beneficial and what to keep in mind when buying one.

How Our Calcium Needs Change as We Age

Calcium needs change during adulthood. The recommended daily requirement is 1,000 milligrams of calcium a day for adults between the ages of 19 and 50, and 1,200 milligrams for women between the ages of 51 and 70, as well as for all adults 71 or older.

“Our calcium needs go up in later life,” Dr Henderson tells Parade. He explains that for women, lower estrogen levels after menopause speed up bone loss, which is why calcium needs increase at that time. He adds that for both women and men, the gut naturally becomes less efficient at absorbing calcium as we age, so we need more coming in to maintain our bone health.

As with any nutrient or vitamin, the best way to get enough calcium is through diet. Dr. Lori Solomon, MD, MPH, the chair of family and community medicine at New York Medical College, gives some examples of how to do this, saying that an eight-ounce glass of milk, fortified almond or soy milk, or yogurt has about 300 milligrams of calcium, while one ounce of cheese has about 250 milligrams.

“Getting calcium from food also delivers other bone-friendly nutrients, and unlike supplements, it hasn’t been tied to the possible heart concerns some studies have raised,” Dr. Henderson adds, highlighting a scientific study showing that calcium supplements are associated with an increased risk of heart attacks.

Are There Benefits To Taking a Calcium Supplement?

If you are lactose intolerant or know you don’t eat enough calcium-rich foods, you may be wondering if you should take a calcium supplement. After all, the whole point of supplements is to fill in any nutrient gaps from one’s diet. 

Both doctors say that taking a calcium supplement can be helpful if you know you aren’t getting enough calcium from your diet. Dr. Solomon adds that taking a calcium supplement is also advised for people with osteoporosis and people who have had a gastric bypass surgery.

Scientific research shows that taking a calcium supplement can be beneficial. Dr. Henderson points to a large analysis of 29 clinical trials in nearly 64,000 people, which found that calcium, especially paired with vitamin D, modestly lowers the risk of fracture.

However, he highlights another, more recent and larger analysis of 69 clinical trials in over 150,000 people, most of whom were at low fracture risk, that found little to no clinically meaningful benefit from calcium, vitamin D or combined supplementation.

“The benefit, if any, appears to mainly help people who had low calcium intake to begin with, so if you're already getting enough from food, a supplement is unlikely to add much,” he says.

What about the research mentioned earlier that a calcium supplement increases the risk of heart attacks? Since there is conflicting evidence about this, it’s best to talk to your healthcare provider before starting a calcium supplement to discuss this potential risk, especially if you are already at an increased risk for any cardiovascular events.

What To Keep in Mind When Buying a Calcium Supplement

If you decide that you do want to take a calcium supplement, it’s important to consider the type of calcium found in different options. “There are two forms of calcium supplements: calcium carbonate and calcium citrate,” Dr. Solomon explains, adding that the dose for either one should not exceed 600 milligrams. If you need to take more than this, you can split it up into two doses.

Calcium carbonate needs to be taken with food for maximal absorption, while calcium citrate can be taken with or without food. “Many supplements also contain vitamin D, which helps with absorption,” Dr. Solomon says.

When shopping for a calcium supplement, Dr. Henderson suggests looking at the “elemental calcium” number on the label. “That’s the amount your body actually uses, not the larger total-compound weight,” he adds. For calcium carbonate, look for an elemental calcium of at least 40%. For calcium citrate, look for one that’s at least 21%. 

To ensure that the supplement you’re buying has been tested for purity and dosage, Dr. Henderson emphasizes choosing one with a “USP verified” label, which means it has been tested by a third-party for safety and quality.

Side Effects To Be Aware Of

While calcium supplements are generally considered safe, both doctors say that one common side effect many people experience is constipation.

“Research shows that calcium reduces the water content of stool, which changes stool consistency. In clinical trials, gastrointestinal side effects like constipation, cramping and bloating are more common in people taking calcium supplements,” Dr. Henderson says.

Dr. Solomon adds that calcium carbonate is more likely to cause constipation than calcium citrate, so if you are prone to constipation, try taking a calcium citrate supplement instead of a calcium carbonate one.

To help minimize constipation, Dr. Henderson says to make sure you’re drinking plenty of water and make sure your calcium supplement is less than 600 milligrams. 

Remember, it’s best to get vitamins and nutrients, including calcium, through what you eat and drink. But if you know you’re falling short, a calcium supplement can be a great way to fill in the gaps. Consistently getting enough calcium is important for maintaining strong bones as we age. Whether it’s through diet or a combination of diet and supplementation, find a routine that works for you.

The Raconteurs, fronted by modern rock icon Jack White, are once again in the spotlight after joining the list of the greatest supergroups of all time.

Louder Sound included the four-piece group in its ranking, which featured some of the most influential all-star bands in rock history. The Raconteurs joined supergroup legends Cream, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Temple of the Dog, Velvet Revolver and Asia, which secured the top five spots on the list.

With The Raconteurs landing at No. 15, the publication praised the band's critically acclaimed first two albums. However, it noted that the band's lengthy hiatus ultimately diminished the impact of its 2019 comeback.

Formed in 2005, the quartet, composed of White from the Grammy-winning band The White Stripes and Brendan Benson from the indie rock band The Mood Elevator, was rounded out by The Greenhornes' Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler.

Although The Raconteurs may have looked like just another side project similar to other supergroups, White wanted to prove that it was a true band with every member playing an important role and not simply an experimental project.

"The only way to defeat that is to play live in front of everyone," he said in a 2006 interview as cited by CBS News. "I think we're seeing that wherever we go playing live, we're getting a fair chance. The more you keep pushing and keep going with it, the less and less people think side project, because side project usually means some flippant thing — you're not even paying too much attention to it."

Lo and behold, their debut album, Broken Boy Soldiers, was a massive success after it debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 and No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart.

It even received a major nomination at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards for Best Rock Album.

As for its lead single, "Steady, As She Goes" was a breakthrough hit that reached No. 1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and broke into the Top 5 on the UK Singles Chart.

With the continued success of the quartet, White kept the momentum going by embarking on an extensive touring schedule, performing at major festivals around the world.

From chart-topping albums and songs, the band made its first major festival appearance at the 2006 Wireless Festival in London, followed by performances at Rock en Seine in France, Reading Festival and Leeds Festival in England, Lollapalooza in Chicago, Virgin Festival in Baltimore and more.

In 2008, they released their sophomore album, Consolers of the Lonely. It was a major success despite The Raconteurs not having given any "interviews or advertisements for this record" before the official release.

“The purpose: to get the album to the fans as soon as possible and as we promised,” the band mentioned in a statement as reported by Ultimate Classic Rock. “We wanted to get this record to fans, the press, radio, etc., all at the EXACT SAME TIME so that no one has an upper hand on anyone else regarding its availability, reception or perception.”

Unfortunately, after their extensive tour in celebration of their second album, The Raconteurs went on hiatus in 2009, with the members focusing on their separate ventures, musical projects and family commitments.

White focused on The Dead Weather before launching his solo career in 2012, while Benson continued his solo career with the albums What Kind of World (2012) and You Were Right (2013).

Meanwhile, Lawrence and Keeler returned to The Greenhornes and The Dead Weather.

In 2019, the band ended its 11-year album hiatus by releasing its third album, Help Us Stranger, which became its first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200.

The Raconteurs have yet to announce new music or touring plans following Help Us Stranger.

Despite the band's inactivity, its latest honor highlights the lasting legacy built through its acclaimed catalog.
