1982 Hit Named ‘Most Complex Pop Song of All Time' Released 44 Years Ago Today

Tue, 04/14/2026 - 3:16am

Released on April 14, 1982, “Never Gonna Let You Go” by Sérgio Mendes has become one of the most unlikely chart hits of its era—and one of the most musically intricate.

The song, written by legendary songwriting duo Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, was first recorded by Dionne Warwick before Mendes released his now-definitive version in 1983, featuring vocalists Joe Pizzulo and Leeza Miller.

It went on to become a major hit, reaching No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spending four weeks at No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart—a strong showing for a song that, behind the scenes, is anything but simple.

Decades later, musician, producer and educator Rick Beato gave the track a new level of recognition when he called it “the most complex pop song of all time” in a 2021 analysis on his YouTube channel.

Beato pointed to the song’s constant key changes, unusual chord progressions, and unpredictable structure as reasons it stands apart from typical radio hits. In his breakdown, he recalls first encountering the track as a young musician and being completely thrown off by how quickly it shifts musically.

“I’d never seen a song that went through so many different chord changes,” Beato said, describing his first attempt to learn it.

Despite that complexity, “Never Gonna Let You Go” doesn’t sound complicated to casual listeners, which is a paradox that helps explain its success. The melody is smooth, the arrangement is polished, and the emotional core is easy to connect with, even as the underlying structure constantly shifts.

Beato also noted how unusual it is for a song this harmonically dense to become a mainstream hit, especially by today’s standards.

“You don’t even notice that it changes keys like a hundred times,” he said.

Originally, the song had been offered to Earth, Wind & Fire, who passed on recording it—a decision that ultimately opened the door for Mendes’ version to become the definitive one.

More than four decades later, the song remains a fascinating outlier: a soft, romantic ballad on the surface, and a masterclass in musical complexity underneath, which is proof that even the most intricate compositions can still find a wide audience.

Quote of the Day: Reba McEntire's 9 Words on Fear Say It All

Tue, 04/14/2026 - 2:45am

Reba McEntire may be the Queen of Country, but the kindness, warmth and humor she displays onThe Voiceand Happy's Place makes it easy to forget that she's sold over 75 million records and released 25 No. 1 hits over the course of her career! From music to acting to hosting, McEntire has not only done it all, she's done it all exceptionally and is still going strong. But behind that iconic red hair and unmistakable voice is a woman whose life has been shaped by curiosity, courage and resilience.

McEntire was born on March 28, 1955 in McAlester, Oklahoma and raised on a cattle ranch. Her mom was a gifted singer, while her father was a rancher and champion steer roper. By her freshman year of high school, Reba and her siblings had formed a vocal group and were already performing at local rodeos and events.

She wasn't even out of her teens when country artist Red Steagall heard her sing the national anthem at the National Finals Rodeo in 1974 and invited her to Nashville to record a demo. But a young Reba was terrified and on the car ride there, she kept making up excuses about why they should turn the car around. In her memoir—My Story—Reba revealed that her mother finally said, "If you don't want to go to Nashville, we don't have to do this. But I'm living all my dreams through you." And they continued on.

The demo Reba recorded on that trip would land her a deal with Mercury Records. For the next six years, she worked tirelessly—writing, recording, touring—and released a whopping 13 singles. Nothing seemed to move the needle, but she refused to give up. One day, she heard a song and knew she had to record it. At first, her producer told her no—thinking her voice was best suited for demos—but she fought for herself and he eventually agreed. On Oct. 2, 1982, "Can't Even Get the Blues"—Reba's 14th single—was officially released. Three months later, it became her first No. 1 hit. "It took a long time," she told Billboard in 2020. "But boy, it was worth it."

From there, Reba was off to the races with multiple platinum albums, sold-out tours and radio hits. Starting in 1984, she won Female Vocalist of the Year at the CMAs four times in a row. In 1987, she earned her first Grammy for "Whoever's in New England" and three years later, made her film debut in Tremors.

On March 15, 1991, McEntire and her band performed a private show for IBM executives in San Diego, California. After the concert, they needed to get to Fort Wayne, Indiana for their next show. However, because Reba was recovering from bronchitis, she decided to stay behind and fly out the following day. It was a decision that saved her life: Just minutes after takeoff, the chartered plane carrying her band crashed into the side of a mountain. All ten people on board were killed—seven of her band members, her tour manager Jim Hammon and both pilots.

Her heart was completely shattered. "I didn't know how I could go on," she said. She seriously considered walking away from music entirely. But instead of giving up, she channeled her grief into an album she dedicated to her fallen friends. For My Broken Heart was released on Oct. 1, 1991, and it would become one of the best-selling records of her entire career.

Since then, she's made her dazzling Broadway debut, had her own sitcomReba—that ran for six seasons, earned a spot in the Country Music Hall of Fame and received the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors. Currently, you can see her on two hit NBC shows: The Voiceand Happy's Place. Through every hit song and accolade—and every setback and heartbreak—Reba continues to inspire—and that's why she's our quote of the day.

Quote of the Day by Reba McEntire

"The flip side of fear isn't fearlessness. It's curiosity."

This quote is from Reba's 2023 book—Not That Fancy. It's so Reba—meaning it's so unique that I've never heard anyone else describe fear in this way. We've always been taught that the opposite of fear is being brave; that we have to face challenges head-on. And that can be so stressful and overwhelming. But the "Fancy" singer presents it as something entirely different. When we encounter something that scares us, it's not about finding the strength to tackle it; it's about being curious enough to want to discover what the other side of that feels like. It makes fear feel so much more manageable.

Deeper Meaning of Reba's Quote—Fearless Curiosity

Now that you've seen this quote, think about Reba's career one more time. For over 50 years, she's been living by these words. She was terrified on that drive to Nashville to record her first demo, but she was curious about what could happen once she finished it. She landed her first record deal. While her producer previously only had her sing ballads, Reba fought to record "Can't Even Get the Blues" because she loved it and was curious about how an upbeat song would do. It became her first No. 1 single! And when she was curious about acting, she dove in and got her own TV show.

Life is not about finding the courage to face something that scares you—it's having the curiosity to discover what could happen after you take a chance and try.

Reba is engaged to her Happy's Place co-star, Rex Linn. They first met in 1991 and started dating in 2020.

'60s Rocker Addresses Last Phone Call With Legendary Drummer

Tue, 04/14/2026 - 1:27am

Veteran rocker Bill Ward is looking back on one of his most emotional memories: his final phone conversation with late drum icon Cozy Powell.

Speaking during a recent appearance on LA Radio Sessions, the founding member of Black Sabbath shared deeply personal reflections about their friendship, revealing that the call came just two weeks before Powell’s sudden death in 1998.

During the radio segment, Ward recalled how meaningful that last conversation was.

“My last phone call with Cozy, actually, was about two weeks before he passed away,” he said. “And I am so glad that I was able to talk to Cozy on really meaningful topics and heartfelt conversation.”

The drummer explained that he and Powell had not spoken for some time before reconnecting. That made the call even more significant.

“I hadn't spoken to him for a while, and then, of course, two weeks later, he passed away, which was heartbreaking,” Ward added.

Powell, known for his powerful style and work with major rock acts, died on April 5, 1998, following a car crash in England. He was 50 years old. His death shocked the music world and left a lasting void among fellow musicians and fans alike.

Beyond the emotional memory, Ward spoke with admiration about Powell’s talent and influence. He remembered first meeting him when they were both young musicians, noting how impressed he was even then.

“Well, Cozy Powell was somebody that I first met when we were still kids. Great drummer. Tight,” Ward said. “I was attracted to his personality. He was a nice man — very nice man.”

Ward also praised Powell’s musical style, linking it to legendary jazz influences like Buddy Rich while noting how perfectly it fit into rock music. “It fitted really well into rock. It's almost like his body and the way that he played was designed for that era,” he explained.

He emphasized Powell’s versatility and success, pointing out that the drummer even had charting solo records built around drum performances—something rare in popular music.

“He had a lot of hit records by himself as a single artist… He was always available, always listening. I think he was a drummer’s drummer,” Ward said.

Now approaching his late 70s, Ward admitted that revisiting memories of lost friends brings mixed emotions.

“It's so sad, very sad, now when I'm thinking about it,” he said. “It's an incredible journey, but there's also a price to pay… The memories alone are often sad as well as brilliant opportunities. It's a mixed bag.”

Despite the sadness, Ward ended his tribute on a deeply affectionate note: “So, yeah, Cozy was an angel. That's what Cozy Powell was.”

Ward’s comments come as fans continue to celebrate the legacy of Black Sabbath, a band that helped define heavy metal in the 1970s alongside members like Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler. As one of the group’s founding figures, Ward remains a key voice in preserving rock history through stories like this.

No. 1 Pick Azzi Fudd Turns Heads With Her Outfits at WNBA Draft

Tue, 04/14/2026 - 12:55am

The 2026 WNBA Draft was supposed to be all about basketball history, but Azzi Fudd made sure fashion shared the spotlight.

The UConn star guard, selected No. 1 overall by the Dallas Wings, became one of the night's most talked-about names, not just for her talent, but for her bold outfit change that quickly went viral after the WNBA shared it on X.

“Azzi Fudd outfit change 🤩🔥”, the post captioned.

Before her big moment, Fudd first arrived in a custom silver sequin gown by Coach. The dress had a reflective, shimmering finish with a black corset-style base and a sleek silver metallic Coach bag. It was a polished, red-carpet-ready look that set the tone for her night.

But just before she was officially named the No. 1 pick, everything changed.

For the main stage moment, Fudd stepped out in a completely different sequined gown: warmer, brighter and even more eye-catching under the lights.

The dress featured a deep V-neckline and a fitted silhouette that highlighted her athletic frame. Thin straps and a sleeveless cut kept the focus on the design, while the sequins created wave-like patterns in gold, copper, bronze, burnt orange, champagne and deep purple tones.

Every step she took made the dress shimmer like moving fire under the draft lights.

She kept her accessories simple, holding her hands together and showing off a few rings, including a standout diamond piece. The outfit itself did all the talking, giving her a glamorous and powerful presence as she walked onto the stage.

Fans quickly noticed the change and they loved it.

One fan said, “Gorgeous. That dress is the #1 pick of her fits draft night too.”

Another wrote, “Wow. Her stylist is amazing.”

Others simply reacted with short praise like “So pretty” and “Beautiful model mid basketball player.”

One comment even said, “I think I love this one more!” while another added, “Love this look 😍.”

Fudd’s draft night wasn’t only about fashion. The moment she was selected by the Dallas Wings marked a major step in her career, as she officially joined a team looking to build a new era of success.

After her name was called, she shared an emotional moment hugging her parents at her table. She also celebrated with teammates and supporters in the crowd, including her former UConn teammate Paige Bueckers, who was seen applauding during the announcement.

Fudd later spoke about her excitement to reunite with Bueckers on the court.

Iconic ’70s Rocker Makes Fan-First Move Amid 2026 Tour

Tue, 04/14/2026 - 12:19am

A legendary drummer from the 1970s rock era is getting attention online after taking a very personal step for fans.

Phil Ehart, co-founder and longtime drummer of the American rock band Kansas, was seen signing copies of his memoir I AM PHIL for fans who pre-ordered autographed editions.

The moment was shared through a Kansas Instagram post showing Ehart focused on signing books. The post included this caption:

"Phil Ehart is spending today autographing copies of his book, "I AM PHIL," for those who pre-ordered autographed copies.”

Ehart is best known as the powerhouse drummer and co-founder of Kansas, a band formed in 1973 in Topeka, Kansas. The group became one of the most recognizable names in progressive rock, known for major hits like “Carry On Wayward Son” and “Dust in the Wind.”

Phil Ehart, founding member of Kansas, performs at The Fox Theatre on June 21, 2025, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Over the decades, Ehart has remained one of the key steady members of Kansas, performing on every studio album since the band’s debut. He is also widely credited for helping guide the group through more than 50 years of lineup changes and major tours.

His new memoir, “I AM PHIL,” is described as a personal account of his life and career, focusing on his own experiences rather than only the band’s history.

View this post on Instagram

Ehart told Blabbermouth that in the book’s introduction, "I didn't want to write a book that hid behind mythology.”

"This is my story as I lived it, messy, meaningful, and real,” he continued.

The book explores both his rise in music and the personal challenges that came with it, giving fans a closer look at the man behind the drums.

Kansas is known for blending progressive rock with strong melodies and complex arrangements. Since its formation, the band has sold millions of albums and built a global fan base.

Ehart’s role has always gone beyond drumming. He has been a co-founder, band leader, and long-time manager, helping keep Kansas active through decades of change in the music industry. He also co-wrote some of the band’s well-known songs, adding to his influence on their sound.

In recent years, Ehart has also dealt with health challenges, including a major heart attack in 2024 that led him to step back from touring. Despite that, he has remained connected to Kansas and its activities behind the scenes.

The book is available for preorder at PhilEhart.net, with signed copies being prepared directly for fans who reserved them early.

1985 No. 1 Art Rock Hit Became the Anthem of a Cult Classic Still Beloved 37 Years Later

Mon, 04/13/2026 - 11:00pm

April 14, 2026, marks the 37th anniversary of the release of the romantic comedy-drama film Say Anything, in which actor John Cusack stars opposite Ione Skye as Lloyd Dobler and Diane Court

The movie, which debuted in theaters by 20th Century Fox on April 14, 1989, is a coming-of-age film that captures the intensity of first love and focuses on the unlikely pairing of two high school graduates. Cusack’s character is an unconventional dreamer without a future plan, while Skye’s role is that of a class valedictorian who is headed for academic success

Regardless of the striking contrast between the two individuals, Dobler (Cusack) doesn’t hesitate to pursue Court (Skye), which works in his favor as she accepts his romantic gestures.

An Iconic Scene

Though drama unfolds and tension builds as the story continues with Court’s overprotective father being unaccepting of Dobler, one moment in the Cameron Crowe-directed film has stood out as an iconic scene that will be remembered for years to come.

And that’s the famous “boombox scene.”

In that sincere and vulnerable moment, Dobler is shown standing outside Court’s bedroom window late at night, holding a boombox over his head. What’s heard at that point is Peter Gabriel’s 1986 soft rock classic “In Your Eyes,” being blasted into the air.

The song became a defining moment of the film that still carries weight today because it captures a feeling of emotional risk that’s both rare and timeless. In pop culture, that boombox moment became a long-lasting symbol of romantic devotion.

A Near-Miss

Surprisingly, however, “In Your Eyes” almost never made it into the film. According to Entertainment Weekly, Crowe had the initial idea of using Billy Idol’s “To Be A Lover,” but that song would’ve changed the vibe of the story.

“No song worked, especially ‘To Be A Lover,’ or anything we were playing in the boom box in the number of times that we tried to shoot it—nothing worked,” he told the outlet. “We had songwriters come in and try to write a song—nothing worked.”

Crowe had an inkling to listen to his old wedding tape that included the Gabriel hit. He says listening to “In Your Eyes” gave him “this chill because all the words linked up to what we'd filmed and what we were struggling to find a score to or a song.”

“I just raced to the editing room, and we put it on, and it was perfect,” he shared.

However, locking down the song was another battle.

“A guy from Geffen Records (Gabriel’s label) came and saw the movie, took me aside and said, ‘I'm going to tell you what nobody else is going to tell you. It's not Fast Times. You've really missed with this movie. If you really want to save your career, you should be doing another Spicoli movie, and I'm just going to tell you the truth right now,” Crowe recalled. “I was like, ‘Oh f—, now we're really not going to get the song. We're doomed.’”

The other rejection Crowe faced was an initial “no” from Gabriel, himself, who told him, "I appreciate you asking for the song. It's a very personal song to me, and I just hope you don't mind that I have to turn you down."

Luckily, Gabriel had mistaken Crowe’s film for someone else’s, and after watching it, he ultimately approved the use of the song.In the end, that near-missed opportunity became the very heartbeat of Say Anything… Decades later, the image of Dobler standing beneath Courti’s window, holding a boombox with his heart on the line and the classic “In Your Eyes” playing on, remains one of cinema’s most memorable expressions of love.

'80s Music Legend Phil Collins Makes Rock and Roll Hall of Fame History at Age 75

Mon, 04/13/2026 - 10:48pm

2026 is about to become a historic year for Phil Collins.

On Monday April 13, the legendary musician was officially announced as a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 2026 class. As one of the 17 artists nominated this year, Collins was poised to make history if he was selected — and now he will be doing just that.

🎬SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox🎬

Collins' induction as a solo artist will make him the fourth drummer to ever be inducted into the Rock Hall twice. He already became a Rock Hall of Famer back in 2010 when he was inducted as part of the British rock band Genesis.

Now, the 75-year-old musician will be joining the ranks of the only three other drummers in Rock Hall history to have been inducted twice. Among them are Matt Cameron, who was inducted with Pearl Jam in 2017 and Soundgarden in 2025, as well as Ringo Starr, inducted as a member of The Beatles in 1988 and for Musical Excellence as a solo artist in 2015, plus Dave Grohl, who first received the honor as the drummer for Nirvana in 2014 and later with Foo Fighters in 2021.

The official 2026 inductees were announced on Monday night, as announced by Lionel Richie, a member of the Rock Hall's class of 2022, during this week's American Idol episode.

In addition to Collins, this year's inductees in the performers category are: Billy Idol, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, Oasis, Sade, Luther Vandross and Wu-Tang Clan. Inductees in other categories include Queen Latifah, Gram Parsons, Linda Creed, Ed Sullivan and more.

Among the artists who were nominated this year but ultimately not selected are The Black Crowes, Jeff BuckleyMariah CareyMelissa EtheridgeLauryn Hill, New Edition, P!nk, INXS and Shakira.

The 2026 induction ceremony will take place Nov. 14 in Los Angeles, and will be aired on ABC and Disney+ in December.

'Love Island' Stars Join MemeHouse’s Coachella Livestream Activation

Mon, 04/13/2026 - 10:46pm

Love Island USA Season 7 racked up 18.4 billion streaming minutes last summer, became the first Peacock original to hit No. 1 on Nielsen’s overall streaming chart, and turned its cast into some of the most recognizable faces on the internet practically overnight. So when fan favorites like Nic Vansteenberghe and Pepe Garcia pop up at Coachella, word travels fast.

On Saturday, April 11, MemeHouse dropped a carousel of photos from weekend one showing the former Islanders at The Scene — a nine-house livestreaming activation spread across 10 acres of desert during the festival.

In one shot, Vansteenberghe throws up a peace sign in a black Psycho Circus hoodie next to creator Cole Steiner, known online as Cole Train, who's in a black tank top and chain necklace. In another, Garcia rocks a vintage Heat jersey and backwards cap under the California sun, arm around Steiner with palm trees lining the background.

Fellow Season 7 cast member Cierra Ortega was also on site, giving fans an early look at the compound in a TikTok house tour that quickly racked up over 100,000 likes. But Love Island wasn't the only world represented. Boxing champion Ryan Garcia, creator Jake Webber, model Suede Brooks, influencer Kate Cassidy, and content duo Johnny and Evelyn Ortiz all came through The Scene as well.

While it's unclear which of the nine houses the stars spent their time in, the activation they walked into was massive. More than 80 creators, 80-plus cameras, and over 2,500 hours of live programming are spread across themed spaces anchored by names like DDG. "Coachella has always been the place where culture moves first, and The Scene is our answer to what that looks like in 2026," MemeHouse's Director of Marketing Sandra Aderibigbe said.

MemeHouse, the 24/7 live-streaming creator compound and production company, has already built a footprint with projects ranging from Ice Spice in Tokyo to A Boogie Wit da Hoodie at Radio City Music Hall. Through its partnership with THE LEAGUE, a celebrity basketball platform that has drawn LaMelo Ball and Michael Porter Jr., it’s also been tied to events featuring Future, Machine Gun Kelly, and Diplo.

Vansteenberghe also made waves beyond the activation. Earlier that weekend, the 24-year-old went viral on Threads after sharing what he called “the rumor going around town” — an alleged leak of Justin Bieber's Saturday night setlist. Then on Sunday, a video of Kim Kardashian's daughter North West lighting up after spotting Vansteenberghe and girlfriendOlandria Carthen at the festival made the rounds across social media.

The Scene continues with Frequency during Coachella weekend two (April 17-19) and The Dunes during Stagecoach (April 24-26), with live programming streaming on MemeHouse's Twitch and Kick channels.

33 Years Ago Today, ’70s Rock Band Received Major Honor

Mon, 04/13/2026 - 10:32pm

What started as state recognition soon turned into a lasting cultural tribute to the iconic rock band that fans still celebrate decades later.

Thirty-three years ago, Aerosmith cemented its legacy after receiving a rare honor that marked a historic celebration in Massachusetts.

In 1993, then-Governor William Weld proclaimed April 13 as “Aerosmith Day” for their significant cultural contribution as "Bad Boys from Boston.”

The proclamation highlights the band’s humble beginnings as a local Massachusetts band and their rise to early fame within the state, where their success story began.

Moreover, the recognition also served to honor how Aerosmith went on to achieve the global fame that they now have, particularly in the music industry.

Three decades later, the band remains deeply grateful for such a rare honor from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and for the fans who have supported them since their early years.

“HAPPY AEROSMITH DAY 2026. On April 13, 1993, Governor William Weld declared the day “Aerosmith Day” throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. We are so proud to be The Bad Boys from Boston and a part of Massachusetts history!” the caption reads along with a compilation video of the band’s performances.

The comment section was filled with excitement and admiration as fans joined the celebration.

“Every day is Aerosmith day,” Kamenar frontman Sean Kamenar said.

“My favorite holiday,” a commenter added.

A follower shared what it's like celebrating the Aerosmith day in his household, noting, “What are you talking about, it's happy Aerosmith day every day in my house. I'm always listening to Aerosmith, it's just not one day of the year. Hell no, I have them pumping every day, sometimes my windows shake LOL.”

“One last show to celebrate it!” a commenter added, requesting a possible upcoming performance.

The same goes for another Instagram user who said, “I think this day should be celebrated in Brazil with a super show.”

The last time Aerosmith performed a concert tour was in 2023 for their Peace Out: The Farewell Tour.

In a joint statement, cited by Rocket Arena, they hinted at delivering an unforgettable performance, noting, “It’s not goodbye, it's PEACE OUT! Get ready and walk this way, you’re going to get the best show of our lives.”

The show kicked off in Philadelphia in September 2024 and was joined by The Black Crowes as their special guests.

However, the band cancelled the remainder of the farewell tour after frontman Steven Tyler’s vocal cord injury, which made a full recovery impossible, leading Aerosmith to announce their retirement from touring in 2024.

Who Will Win ‘The Voice’ Season 29? After Watching Every 2026 Episode, Here Are Our Predictions

Mon, 04/13/2026 - 10:30pm

Now that The Voice Season 29 has revealed the four finalists, the question remains who is going to walk away with the title?  Will it be Kelly Clarkson’s Liv Ciara or Mikenley Brown, Adam Levine’s Alexia Jayy or John Legend’s Lucas West? Here are our predictions for who will win The Voice in 2026.

But first, this season is different than any other that preceded it in that The Voice finale is not live, but already pre-taped with an audience of Superfans and former The Voice contestants voting for the winner. Not America.

This same audience voted for the four finalists, and I have to say that I think the result is very different than what it would have been if America had voted. In fact, two of my favorites in the Top 9 didn’t make the final four! So I am going to depend more on what the coaches had to say during the semifinal performances than who I think might win, as the usual leanings from past seasons don’t apply. There isn’t one country artist in the finale, and only one really young artist: Liv, who is 16.

That said, here are our predictions for who will win The Voice Season 29.

🎤 SIGN UP for our The Voice newsletter to get access to exclusive news, interviews, insider info, sneak peeks & more 🎤

Who will win The Voice Season 29 in 2026?

My prediction is a tie right now between Liv Ciara and Lucas West. Liv’s performance in the semifinals couldn’t have gotten her more raves from the coaches, but with former Voice contestants voting, the fact that Lucas is more than a vocalist but also a pianist could tip the vote in his favor.

LIV CIARA

In the semifinals, Liv performed “Flashdance…What a Feeling” by Irene Cara, and she did it her way. In fact, coach Kelly made sure that everyone knew that the version that Liv sang was completely her own creation.

“I want to tell everyone right now that I had zero to do with any of that,” Kelly said. “She did everything. She completely came up with all of that. It is such a beautiful thing to realize how amazing you are as a singer but also as a producer.”

But it wasn’t just Kelly raving about her. John and Adam did as well.

John said, “Liv, that was a superstar performance. You looked, you sounded and you carried yourself like you were supposed to be here, and you’re supposed to be making records and playing arenas.”

But it was Adam who may have cemented her win. He said, “I am very sad right now. My sadness is you’re not on my team because I think right at this moment, you would win The Voice. We all decided this right now. Actually, I don’t wish that you do that because, again I have to remind myself, you are not on my team. I thought maybe I had a good chance of winning this year, a chance that is still there but not as much as before I saw what you just did. I am a huge fan of yours.”

LUCAS WEST

For his semifinal performance, Lucas tackled “Maybe I’m Amazed” by Paul McCartney, playing the piano – think Elton John or Billy Joel -- as well as singing. And it’s that special ability that could win him the whole thing.

Adam complimented him, saying, “That song requires everything of the person singing it. There’s no stone left unturned as far as what that song demands of you when you sing it. I don’t think there’s one part of your voice that can’t be firing on all cylinders. I loved how you  brought up those big moments that you did and kind of tossed them a little bit. I thought that was cool. You did a run that made us go [makes a funny noise]. There is something about your voice that is just captivating. I think the fact that you play and are such a real musician, it adds this other dynamic to you that is super compelling. I am a huge fan of yours."

Then Kelly said, “There are very few artists I would go to a stadium for because I don’t find them very intimate and I don’t think people pull them off very well, but it’s funny because I think you’re the one performance tonight that would just crush in that environment. I think you have so much power to your voice, so much conviction, so much soulfulness, not just through your voice but through your fingers. The whole experience is awesome to behold. You’re not just a great voice. You’re a great artist.”

Then Lucas’ coach John said, “You are the whole package. You are an artist’s artist. You are a real pianist who can play play with real chops. You are tackling these songs by really big artists but it also tells me you have great taste in songwriting, which makes me want to hear what your songwriting is like. You come out here and you really deliver an electric, energetic, soulful performance. I just love how artistic you are, how creative you are, and how competitive you are.”

ALEXIA JAYY

Alexia went powerful for her semifinal performance singing Aretha Franklin’s “I Never Loved a Man (the Way I Love You),” and she brought down the house.

Kelly said, “I have been looking forward to this moment for so long. I love this song so much. It has been ingrained in me since I was very young and I don’t like anyone singing it, but you can sing it every damn day. You are so gifted.”

John added, “I love you so much. You are so talented. You have so much creative energy and positive energy. You are elegant and cool at the same time. Classy and fashionable and rock’n’roll and soulful. You’re an artist’s artist and I love you.”

Her coach Adam said, “I don’t know what I’m supposed to tell you because you’re like the best singer ever and I love you so much. I feel like a superfan right now, not a coach. I feel like a dude that loves you. You have this larger-than-life persona that you put out when you are doing your thing. The second you are done, you go back to being the sweetest, most thoughtful, humble person, so I just love that juxtaposition. There aren’t many people that have these incredible qualities as a vocalist and a person. We are all lucky to get to watch you do what you do and I am lucky to get to be your coach.”

Despite the raves for her performance, it didn’t feel that there were as much excitement from the coaches as for the previous two.

MIKENLEY BROWN

Mikenley chose “I’m Not the Only One” by Sam Smith for her semifinal performance. She was one of the earlier performances in the show, unlike Liv, Alexia and Lucas, who were in the second half, and was memorable enough that voters remembered her.

“Mikenley, I am beaming over here,” John said. “This was your best performance. I loved the crackle in your voice, the rasp was really beautiful. I think you may have snuck up on people and shown them something they may not have expected. That was so well done. I absolutely loved it.”

Then Adam chimed in, “I agree. I think it was your best performance. I think it was more of what we all loved when we turned around for you in the Blinds, and definitely beautiful. Your head voice and your falsetto, the way you dance in there is your superpower as a singer. It’s so beautiful.”

Kelly said: “Believability is a huge thing for me because a lot of people come out here and sing great songs, but I don’t buy it. I buy it from you. I was impressed by you in rehearsals. She walked in and she sang like that and I was, ‘I know I’m supposed to say something here.’ You were doing those incredible runs, but I love that you held back on some of the runs and you made them more special.”

As good as Mikenley was, I am still betting on either Liv or Lucas as the winners.

The Voice finale will take place on Tuesday, April  14 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. Streaming next day on Peacock.
