When it comes to fast food, everyone has a favorite french fry. Maybe you swear by crispy shoestring fries. Maybe it's thick-cut fries, waffle fries or heavily seasoned ones. Whatever your preference, chances are, you'll defend your favorite chain to the end.

A few restaurants have earned almost legendary status. McDonald's fries are often considered the gold standard, while In-N-Out's fresh-cut fries might be the most polarizing item in fast food. Some people love them, while others can't stand them.

I wanted to find out whether these french fry reputations actually held up when every fry was stacked against the competition, so I spent the day driving from one fast-food restaurant to the next, ordering fries from 14 different chains and tasting them side by side. Some were exactly as good as I remembered, others were surprisingly disappointing and a couple completely caught me off guard.

I expected several chains to be in a close race for the top spot. Instead, one restaurant separated itself from the pack much more than I expected. By the end of the taste test, there really wasn't much debate about which fast-food chain served the best fries.

Read on for the results of the taste test and to see where your favorite fry landed on the list. Who knows: you may have a new fast-food french fry to try on your next drive-thru run.

The Fast-Food Fry Taste Test: My Methodology

To keep things fair, I ordered every fry in person and ate them as soon as possible after they were served. There were no delivery apps and no ketchup or dipping sauces to cover up any flaws.

While this list doesn't cover every fast-food fry out there, it includes a good mix of national chains and a couple of regional favorites.

Every order was judged on flavor, texture, crispiness, seasoning and consistency from the first fry to the last. Of course, taste is subjective, but after 14 orders, one chain clearly stood above the rest.

The Bottom Tier: The Worst Fast-Food Fries We Tried14. Sonic ($3.39)

These Sonic fries were the biggest disappointment of the entire taste test. The fries were so dark and overcooked that the first bite caught me off guard. They were tough to chew, tasted like old frying oil and reminded me more of stale fries than a fresh order. I've seen similar complaints from other customers about the Groovy Fries, so my experience may not have been an isolated one. Either way, this batch landed firmly at the bottom of my rankings.

13. Wendy's ($3.89)

I had high hopes for Wendy's fries after hearing so many people rave about them, but this order didn't quite live up to the hype. They were on the darker side with a crispier exterior than most of the fries I tried, but they also tasted a little dry and could've used more salt. They're still a perfectly decent side, but just not one that stood out once I started comparing them with the rest of the competition.

12. KFC ($3.39)

The seasoned coating is easily the best part of KFC's fries. It adds plenty of flavor and gives them a crisp exterior, but the fries themselves were a little too soft and oily for my liking. By the end of the order, the coating had left noticeable oil marks on the carton, which made them feel heavier than many of the other fries I tried. They're not bad by any means, but I expected them to be a little crispier.

11. Burger King ($4.49)

Burger King's fries have a nice crisp and are a little longer than most of the others I tried. They reminded me a bit of Carl's Jr.'s fries, though they were slightly drier and didn't leave much of an impression beyond that. There's nothing wrong with them, but when stacked against the rest of the competition, they were easy to forget.

The Middle Pack: Good, But Forgettable10. Taco Bell ($2.99)

Unlike most of the fries on this list, Taco Bell's Nacho Fries rely on seasoning instead of just salt. The fries themselves are soft with a light crisp, but the seasoning gives every bite plenty of flavor. I would've liked a little more crunch, but they're still a solid option, especially if you're looking for something different than a traditional order of fries. I skipped the nacho cheese for this ranking, but it's hard to argue that the two aren't made for each other.

9. Popeyes ($4.09)

If bold flavor is what you're after, Popeyes delivers. The Cajun seasoning gives these fries one of the biggest flavor boosts of the entire taste test, making them stand out from the sea of plain salted fries. This particular order wasn't quite as crispy as I've had from Popeyes before, but the bold seasoning still carried them to one of the stronger finishes in the ranking.

8. Jack in the Box ($3.99)

If you're ordering fries at Jack in the Box, skip the regular fries and go straight for the curly fries. They have an excellent crispiness, plenty of flavorful seasoning and just the right amount of salt to keep you reaching for another bite. They are a little oily, but not enough to take away from the experience. The seasoning and crispiness give the curly fries just enough of an edge over the regular fries.

7. Carl's Jr. ($3.59)

These Carl's Jr. fries ended up being one of the biggest surprises of the taste test. They arrived hot, were nicely salted and packed more flavor than I expected. They're a little softer and oilier than some of the fries ranked above them, but they were still packed with flavor. A little more crispness would've pushed them even higher, but they were still satisfying enough that I'd happily order them again.

6. Raising Cane's ($2.99)

Freshness is what stood out most about Raising Cane's crinkle-cut fries. They arrived lightly golden with a satisfying texture, and they didn't have the greasy taste that held back a few other chains. I found myself wishing they had a little more salt to make the flavor pop, but the fresh potato taste and solid crisp more than made up for it. They weren't quite good enough to crack my top tier, but they're an easy side I'd order again.

5. In-N-Out ($2.40)

In-N-Out fries are probably the most divisive among fast-food fries, but I don't think they deserve nearly as much hate as they get. Fresh out of the fryer, they had a clean potato flavor, a good amount of salt and were cooked surprisingly evenly from fry to fry. They weren't nearly as crispy as some of the higher-ranked chains, and after a few minutes, they started to soften, which is where I can see the "cardboard" complaints coming from. Even so, they're still a fry I'd gladly order again, especially because you can ask for them to be made light or well-done if you prefer a different level of crispiness.

4. McDonald's ($2.99)

McDonald's fries are every bit as good as people say they are, but tasting them side by side with other chains made me notice a few things I probably would've overlooked otherwise. They have that classic crispy exterior, fluffy center and unmistakable salty flavor, but my order was a little oilier than I'd like. They're still an easy fry to finish and absolutely deserve a spot near the top of the rankings, but they didn't quite live up to the almost untouchable reputation they have among die-hard fans.

The Top 3: The Elite Fast-Food French Fries3. Del Taco ($3.99)

Del Taco may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of great french fries, but these were one of the biggest surprises of the french fry taste test. They arrived piping hot and tasted noticeably fresher than several competitors, even when ordered late at night. While they weren't the crispiest fries I tried and could have used a little more salt, I found myself reaching back into the bag for more. If you're already stopping for tacos, don't sleep on the fries.

2. Shake Shack ($4)

Shake Shack's crinkle-cut fries got off to a strong start thanks to their crispy exterior and satisfying chew. The thicker cut gives them a hearty bite without feeling overly dense, and they stayed crisp longer than many of the other fries I sampled. They missed the top spot because my order wasn't perfectly consistent. There were a few overly browned pieces and smaller crunchy bits at the bottom, but the overall quality was still excellent.

1. Chick-fil-A ($2.99)

Chick-fil-A's waffle fries checked nearly every box. They were crispy on the outside, soft inside and had a texture that kept every bite interesting. Their unique shape also means you get plenty of crispy edges without sacrificing the fluffy potato center. My only real complaint was that they could have used a touch more salt, but even without it, these were the fries I kept comparing every other order to in my taste test.

The #1 Best Fast-Food Fry: Chick-fil-A

As I worked my way through all 14 orders, Chick-fil-A's waffle fries remained the one to beat. They struck the best balance of crispiness, texture and freshness without sacrificing one quality for another. Some competitors were crispier but drier. Others had better seasoning but lacked texture. Chick-fil-A found the sweet spot.

The waffle shape deserves some credit too. Those extra ridges create more crispy edges while still leaving plenty of soft, fluffy potato in the center. Every fry felt substantial, and unlike several other chains, my order was consistently cooked from top to bottom.

Would I have sprinkled on a little more salt? Sure. But that was about the only knock I could come up with. When a fry's biggest criticism is that it could use a pinch more seasoning, it's doing something right. After tasting 14 different orders side by side, Chick-fil-A earned the top spot by delivering the most complete fry of the bunch.

Fast-Food Fry Superlatives: Beyond the Overall Winner

• Best Curly Fries: Jack in the Box. Crispy, well-seasoned and packed with flavor, these are everything you'd want from a curly fry.
• Best Waffle Fries: Chick-fil-A. Crispy on the outside, soft inside and consistently cooked from the first fry to the last.
• Best for Reheating:Popeyes. A few minutes in the air fryer brings back their crispiness, while the Cajun seasoning keeps every bite flavorful.
• Best Salt Level:Carl's Jr. These struck the sweet spot with enough salt to enhance the fries without overpowering them.
• Crispiest French Fries:Shake Shack. The crinkle-cut fries delivered one of the crunchiest bites of the entire taste test.
• Best Seasoning:Popeyes. The Cajun seasoning added the boldest flavor of any fry in the lineup.
• Biggest Surprise:Del Taco. I wasn't expecting these to finish near the top, but their fresh flavor won me over.

Final Thoughts

Whether you're grabbing a quick lunch, making a late-night drive-thru run or just craving something salty, the right fries can easily steal the show. Hopefully this ranking helps narrow down your next order—or at the very least gives you a few new chains to try.

FIFA has announced that award-winning singer and entertainer Jennifer Hudson will perform the United States national anthem ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Final at New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday, July 19.

The performance will take place before what is expected to become the largest sporting event finale in history, as Spain and Argentina prepare to meet in the championship match. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 P.M., while the closing ceremony begins at 1:30 p.m. local time, 90 minutes before the match starts.

Hudson's appearance adds another major moment to an already star-filled event that will close the first 48-team FIFA World Cup tournament.

FIFA confirmed that the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award winner will deliver a special rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" in front of a global audience expected to reach hundreds of millions of viewers.

According to FIFA, Hudson's performance will "set the stage for football's biggest match and the most anticipated moment of the tournament."

The singer arrives at the World Cup Final after recently performing "God Bless America" at the 2026 MLB All-Star Game in Philadelphia, a performance that drew widespread attention across social media and served as a high-profile lead-up to her appearance at football's biggest event.

Star-Studded FIFA World Cup 2026 Closing Ceremony

The World Cup Final closing ceremony will celebrate the journey of all 48 national teams that competed across Canada, Mexico and the United States during the tournament.

FIFA confirmed performances from Laura Pausini, Nicole Scherzinger, Robbie Williams and internet personality IShowSpeed, while actor Tom Cruise will make a special appearance during the show.

Post Malone will headline the ceremony with a performance that FIFA President Gianni Infantino said was "designed to celebrate the tournament's journey and ignite the atmosphere before the world's attention turns to the two finalists."

The final will also feature the FIFA World Cup's first-ever halftime show. The production is being organized by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin and is expected to include performances by Justin Bieber, Madonna, Shakira and BTS.

Both the closing ceremony and halftime show will be broadcast alongside the final match.

The 2026 tournament opened with performances from Shakira and Burna Boy, while Katy Perry, Future, Ellie Goulding, Michael Bublé and Alanis Morissette also appeared during events connected to the competition.

Hudson enters the World Cup Final as one of the most decorated performers in entertainment.

The Chicago native became the youngest woman and the third African-American recipient of the prestigious EGOT, having won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award.

She first rose to national attention as a finalist on the third season of "American Idol" in 2004 before winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Effie White in the 2006 film "Dreamgirls."

Hudson later portrayed music icon Aretha Franklin in the biographical film "Respect" and currently hosts "The Jennifer Hudson Show."

Her career has also included performances at the Super Bowl, the Democratic National Convention and several major national events, making her one of the most recognizable voices in American entertainment.

The World Cup Final anthem performance adds another major stage to that list.

FIFA said the closing ceremony, produced in creative partnership with Balich Wonder Studio, will celebrate "the passion, emotion and global spirit" that shaped the tournament.

Fans attending the final have been encouraged to arrive early to participate in activities planned throughout the venue.

Stadium gates will open at 11 A.M. local time, with FIFA promising exclusive activations, rewards and additional entertainment before the ceremony begins.

By the time Hudson steps to the microphone to sing the national anthem, the stage will already be set for one of the biggest moments in World Cup history.

While the World Cup has been on sports fans' brains worldwide for the better part of a month, for Americans, their football season is around the corner. We're a little less than two months removed from the start of the NFL calendar and luckily, to bide the time, we have the third season of Quarterback. The docuseries kicked off a long-standing collaboration between Netflix and the NFL back in 2023, becoming an instant hit for its peek into the daily lives of some of the game's biggest players. This time, four QBs are on the roster, following a quartet in very different stages of their careers. It covers number one draft pick Cam Ward in his rookie season, JaydenDaniels trying to follow up his own sensational rookie run with a frustration injury-plagued year, Baker Mayfield continuing to mount a career comeback in Tampa Bay, and former Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco navigating the game — and multiple teams — at the age of 41.

Despite his meteoric rise to fame on Saturday Night Live over 30 years ago, interestingly, Will Ferrell has not done much since in leading a TV show. But that all changes with The Hawk. The new comedy series aims to do to golf what Talladega Nights and Blades of Glory did for racecar driving and figure skating, respectively. Ferrell plays Lonnie "The Hawk" Hawkins, a golfer looking to regain his former glory by rejoining the PGA tour — and competing against his own son. The Emmy winner is joined by a cast on par with some of his best supporting players, including Molly Shannon, Jimmy Tatro, Fortune Feimster, Luke Wilson and Chris Parnell. When it comes to sinking the comedic putt, we shall see if Ferrell is able to nail the birdie, or sink a bogey.

From 2022 to 2024, Netflix subscribers had their hearts sore over Heartstopper. Created by Alice Oseman, and based on the webcomic and graphic novel series of the same name, the coming-of-age drama followed the ups and downs of Nick (Kit Connor) and Charlie (Joe Locke) as they navigated their feelings for one another amongst the many changes that come with high school. And, after three seasons and 24 episodes, the gang is back together for a feature-length conclusion to the story. Based on Oseman's sixth and final graphic novel in the series (which just came out July 2!), everyone seems to be in a state of transition, whether it's getting through the final year of high school, acclimating to university, or figuring out what the world holds for young adults. Regardless of the trials and tribulations Nick, Charlie and their friends go through, there's bound to be plenty of complicated subjects, swooning romance, and plenty of, well, heart.

In 1964, Connie Smith released her debut single "Once a Day" and watched it climb all the way to number one, where it stayed for eight weeks. No woman in country music had held the top spot that long before, and none would again until Taylor Swift came along nearly 50 years later.

Just a year before that record-breaking run, Smith was a 22-year-old homemaker. In August 1963, she entered a talent contest at Frontier Ranch, a country music park outside Columbus, Ohio, singing Jean Shepard's "I Thought of You." 

She won first place and five silver dollars, but the real prize was impressing one of the judges, Grand Ole Opry member Bill Anderson.

"This little girl, with a guitar bigger than she was, came out on stage and just blew me away with her voice," Anderson told American Songwriter in 2018. "She won the contest and I went backstage and told her if she ever wanted to come to Nashville I'd like to help her. I thought she was terrific."

Still, Smith wasn't about to quit everything and pursue music full time. But six months later, she called Anderson and told him she'd reconsidered. 

He helped her sign with RCA Records, where producer Chet Atkins had another job for Anderson. 

"Chet Atkins told me, 'We have a lot of good singers but we don't have a lot of good songs. I'm counting on you to write her some good songs,'" Anderson recalled. "We started with 'Once a Day' and went from there."

Anderson wrote her a song about a woman who can't quite let go of an old love, but has at least gotten her crying down to just "once a day."

Smith released the song in August 1964, and it climbed the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart before hitting number one the week of November 28. It stayed there until January 23, 1965, when Sonny James' "You're the Only World I Know" finally knocked it off.

With that hit, Smith became the first woman in country music to send a debut single to number one. Nobody else matched it for nearly 30 years, until Trisha Yearwood did it in 1991 with "She's in Love with the Boy."

The song earned Smith Grammy nominations for Best Country and Western Single and Best Country and Western Vocal Performance, Female. 

She never topped the charts again, but her career kept rolling. Over the next several years, she racked up 19 more top 10 hits.

BeforeJohn Waitemade it big with "Missing You," he released a rock track titled "Change" that landed him on the charts and was a cover of an already released song.

In 1981, singer-songwriter Holly Knight was a member of two pop-rock bands, Spider and Device. She had written several hit tracks, including "Change," and it was originally released by Spider for their second album, Between the Lines. The song was the album's opening track with lead vocalist Amanda Blue, guitarist Keith Lentin, and bassist Jim Lowel. It never made it to the charts, as it wasn't released as a single.

Knight took inspiration from her own experience in the industry to create a track about personal growth and witnessing artists change their image when reaching fame.

"Change" focused on staying truthful to oneself, with her having once told SongFacts, "I was thinking how important it was to keep things real when success starting happening for us. I had seen several musicians let the fame and success go to their head and I thought that all those things shouldn't really change a person because what's inside of you should remain the same. I think I've lived my life by that notion."

The following year, "Change" was pitched to Waite, who released it as the first single to his 1982 debut solo album, Ignition. He took on the track because of its overall message, as Waite was going through a big transition in his life. He had left The Babys as their frontman and had recently gotten married. Recording in New York took him away from his wife, and he was navigating the industry as a solo artist.

Waite's "Change" also included backing vocals by Patty Smyth and is considered an underrated hit among fans. It landed at No. 16 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks and spent 14 weeks charting. Sadly, it failed to enter the Billboard Hot 100, and Waite blamed the record company for failing to promote the single and album. He would end his contract with Chrysalis and sign with EMI.

Despite its mediocre fame, Waite did the track justice, as Knight would later admit, "I have to say that I much prefer John's version. It's much more guitar-driven, and I love his vocals."

"Change" would experience a resurgence in popularity a few years later when it was included in the soundtrack for the 1985 film Vision Quest. Its re-release led the track to enter the Billboard Hot 100 chart at No. 54. The track served as a pivotal bridge for Waite's career from The Babys' frontman to solo artist, which would lead him to "Missing You" in 1984.

Some albums become hits, while others become part of American culture. Classic rock band Journey's album, Escape, is one of those projects that has never left music lovers' playlists, and likely never will.

Released on July 17, 1981, Escape was Journey's seventh studio album and the first to feature keyboardist Jonathan Cain. The lineup change ended up being a major turning point, helping the band create what would become its most successful studio album—and the only one to top the Billboard 200. The record would eventually earn Diamond certification from the RIAA after selling more than 10 million copies in the United States.

Packed with arena-rock staples, Escape produced a mindblowing run of hit singles, including "Who's Crying Now" (No. 4), "Don't Stop Believin'" (No. 9), "Open Arms" (No. 2), and "Still They Ride" (No. 19). Fan favorite "Stone in Love" also became a rock radio fixture, helping make the album one of the defining releases of the early '80s.

Ironically, the song that became Journey's signature anthem wasn't even the album's biggest chart hit. "Open Arms" peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, while "Don't Stop Believin'" initially reached No. 9 before taking on a remarkable second life through television, film, sports arenas, and streaming.

Today, the latter is widely regarded as one of the most recognizable rock songs ever recorded. "Don't Stop Believin'" became the "biggest song of all time" from the pre-digital era, and has been dubbed the "power ballad that refused to die."

Looking back years later, former frontman Steve Perry admitted the band had no idea just how enduring Escape would become. "When we got to Escape, we were flying," Perry recalled, perMusic Radar, reflecting on the chemistry the band found during those recording sessions.

At the same time, critics weren't particularly fond of the band, but they didn't let that stop them. "People condemned us... because we weren't the hip of the hip. We held our course," Perry told Classic Rock, according to a Louder Sound feature. "I'd rather fail than be successful being somebody else."

And that mindset clearly paid off. Decades later, Journey's risk-taking changed the course of rock music forever. More than four decades after Escape ruled the charts, its songs remain staples on classic rock radio, streaming playlists, movie soundtracks, and stadium speakers around the world.

Craig Melvin and Al Roker have been granted a protective order against the man who was arrested after breaking into the Today Show’s studio in New York City on Thursday, July 16.

A judge issued a protective order that requires the intruder, Andrew Truelove, to stay away from the two hosts, Truelove’s lawyer told TMZ.

Truelove was arrested after he confronted Melvin, lunged at him, and yelled racial slurs at the host. He asked for Al Roker at first, after managing to get past security, having “entered a stairwell and made his way backstage — we’re told near the dressing room, though where exactly is unclear," per TMZ.

Nobody was injured during the incident.

Truelove was booked on hate crime menacing, hate crime burglary, hate crime criminal trespass, and harassment charges. Page Six further reports that a security guard was fired over the incident.

Melvin addressed the incident on air on Friday.

"Thankfully, he was apprehended quickly. He was placed under arrest," the anchor said, adding that they are "cooperating fully with the NYPD as they investigate the matter. We are just very happy that everyone is safe."

He also released a statement on his official Instagram page.

"Hey everyone. I've heard from so many of you over the last few hours. I am doing just fine. Thanks for reaching out. I'm looking forward to seeing you tomorrow morning on @todayshow," he wrote.

Roker also shared a post on Instagram regarding the incident.

"A really heartfelt thank you to all who reached out over the last 24 hours to check in on my brother, @craigmelvinnbc," he wrote. "We are both okay. It’s moments like these that serve to pull us together. You all, like Craig, said 'You come after one of us, you come after all of us'. We’ll talk about it this morning on @todayshow"

Buc-ee's has earned a loyal following for its massive stores and attention to detail. That's exactly why one tiny marketing mistake has fans doing a double take.

The convenience store chain recently rolled out a flyer explaining a new payment procedure at its gas pumps. Customers using a credit or debit card are instructed to pay at the pump, while those paying with cash should have their pump number ready before heading inside. But it wasn't necessarily the policy that caught customers' attention—it was the artwork, which many think was AI generated.

Instead of using what appears to be an original illustration or a photo, the flyer features an image of a gas pump and the infamous beaver mascot that just looks off. Eagle-eyed fans also quickly spotted even more oddities hidden throughout the image.

One sticker on the illustrated gas pump reads, "Stop. Till Up. Pomp," while the octane labels display impossible fuel grades, including an 80 option that doesn't exist. Another pump label appears to show 87 with an upside-down 8, adding to the growing list of AI giveaways.

“Comically bad for a company that is just so about their branding and image,” one Reddit user wrote.

“Somewhere a graphic designer just lost his job to AI,” another pointed out.

On Instagram, fans were also in agreement. 

“I'll never understand why companies are now redoing signs and using AI when there has been such massive backlash against AI. Personally for me companies using AI that's a big red flag. I don't want to give them my money,” one commented on a video of the flyer.

Another quipped, “So is the 80 or 85 gas cheaper? Never seen those options 👀.”

The criticism has left some customers scratching their heads, especially considering Buc-ee's isn't exactly a company strapped for cash.

Industry estimates place the Texas-based chain's annual revenue at roughly $2.5 billion, with individual travel centers believed to generate anywhere from $50 million to $100 million each year. 

The AI controversy also comes not long after Buc-ee's made headlines for its eye-popping employee salaries. According to signage at many of the store’s locations, some general managers can earn between $200,000 and $275,000+ annually without a college degree, while assistant general managers start at $125,000.

And while those generous wages earned plenty of praise online, now some customers are questioning why a company known for billion-dollar revenue and six-figure salaries appears to have relied on AI for a simple informational flyer instead of commissioning original artwork.

Upon his early tenure atSaturday Night Live, however, the fan-favorite comedian revealed some initially tense encounters with prominent guest stars, one of whom even tried to get him ousted from the show.

In a stand-up performance for Netflix Is a Joke, Davidson alleged that prominent comedian Louis C.K. once butted heads with the young SNL guest star during C.K.'s hosting stint in 2015, resulting in the older comedian attempting to get Davidson fired from the show.

"So Louis C.K. tried to get me fired from SNL my first year, and this is that story," Davidson opened by saying.

According to Davidson, he was personally thrilled to have a comedian as well-respected and talented as C.K. host Saturday Night Live, calling him "someone that you would look up to and want approval of at the time."

During C.K.'s appearance on the show, however, Davidson unknowingly earned the ire of the six-time Emmy winner by smoking marijuana backstage, leading C.K. to berate Davidson in front of the show's cast and crew members.

"He looks up and points at me and goes, 'Look how f**king high Pete is! That f**king idiot, just getting f**king high at work, you stupid f**k! You're going to smoke your career away, idiot!'" Davidson recalled.

At the time, Davidson shrugged off the incident. But upon returning to SNL's offices, he was asked to meet with producer Lorne Michaels.

"So I go to work the next day and I get a phone call from Lorne Michaels office," Davidson said. "This was alarming because I've been there for a year and I have yet to hear from his office until today."

"He's like, 'I'm sorry we're having this conversation. But like Louis told on you and he told me to talk to you,'" Davidson continued. "He goes, 'Again, I'm sorry to have this conversation with you, but Louis brought it to my attention, said, you know, you smoke your career way and you smoke so much weed in the office the other day that it actually made him uncomfortable.'"

Fortunately, the incident was mostly glossed over by Michaels, who didn't pursue any further disciplinary action against Davidson, who would appear on SNL until his departure in 2022.

Jack Bruce, Eric Clapton, and Ginger Baker made the supergroup Cream. The British group didn't last long and the music artists went their separate ways. Bruce revealed one of their issues and it's that they had different goals. His was changing a genre.

Cream formed in 1966 and Clapton already made a name for himself in blues with the Yardbirds and John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. Bruce told Record Collector in 2007 that his goals were different from the other bandmates.

"I didn’t have a great knowledge of blues music, or certainly Delta blues, which is what we started out interpreting," the bassist said. "So I had to change a lot, to simplify in some ways and to become interested in new things." He hoped that after he learned they would invent something new.

"I was full of very big ideas about what we could do – re-writing the blues, if you like – and in a way that’s what we tried to do," he later said. "It sounds a bit presumptuous to say that, but I felt there was the possibility of a new kind of musical language with that band, and with the spirit of the 60s we all felt that we could reinvent everything, and start afresh, including music."

Bruce said the three of them never discussed their goals as a group when it came to genre or songwriting. Cream is largely associated with rock.

Delta blues originated in Mississippi and relies on the guitar and harmonica. The genre is forever connected to Southern Black American culture. So how did an English boy become connected to it? A children's radio show called "How Much Is That Doggie in the Window?" Sometimes the host, Uncle Mac played the Blues.

"I don't know what this guy was on; I can't imagine how it would get snuck in, whether it was his taste or someone else's, his wife, who knows?" Clapton told NPR in 2007.

Muddy Waters, who went from Stovall plantation to working full-time as a musician in Chicago, inspired Clapton. "Honey Bee" is a song Clapton often turned to because of the guitar technique and practice playing it.

Albert King played the instrument upside down because he was left handed. Clapton later befriended Waters and called him "the father figure I never really had."

After Cream, Clapton played with more groups. He settled in with Derek and the Dominos and Cream later temporarily reunited in 2005 after they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Daniel Radcliffe may continue to be best known for his childhood role as the titular lead in the beloved Harry Pottermovies, but since those films wrapped with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 in 2011, the star has been taking on a host of new roles, experiences and ventures, each seemingly more unexpected than the last.

Most recently, Radcliffe starred in a one-man show on Broadway, Every Brilliant Thing, which went viral on TikTok because it saw audience members sitting on stage and Radcliffe engaging directly with attendees, in some cases asking them to get involved in the show with certain lines and reactions.

Ashley Trail thought she had all of the ingredients for a winning Big Brother game. The meat of a sparkling social game, the cheese of an "airheaded" perception, all nestled between two buns of superfandom. In actuality, however, it became a recipe for disaster. A series of unfortunate events had Ashley up on the block facing eviction night, though at one point, she was told she would be safe. But her subsequent actions caused major beef with the people who wanted to keep her, charring her game in the process. And so the bartender had far from a happy hour last night, making her the first boot of the season with a record 14 votes.

Ashley had an incredibly low-key first (and only week) of Big Brother. Even on Night 1, her difficulty with attention to detail and math had her losing the first competition, locking her out of competing for safety for the week. But as three reality icons entered the house, and one of them took power in Dee Valladares, the Survivor winner was taking aim at those she felt would be easy targets. And so she adopted a set of "rules" for her nominations, putting up someone from each time-traveling group. Luckily for Ashley, as she stayed firmly in our time period, she was exempt from the block. Unluckily, after house target Mallory Aurichio won immunity, it set Ashley up as an easy replacement, seen as not connected to anybody strategically or personally.

For what it's worth, once Ashley caught word she was in danger, she began to step up her game. And, as the "Crossovers" and "Red Corner" alliances discussed their options, they came to the conclusion that she would serve as a possible number for them. So she was told in no uncertain terms she would have the votes to stay, even naming those who would keep her. Feeling her BB forecast was looking good for the week, she stirred up a storm when she told a few others, hoping it would coerce them to join the majority. Unfortunately, it did the exact opposite. When word got back about Ashley outing the plan, she immediately became public enemy number one, being seen as untrustworthy as biting the burger-holding hand that fed her. And so, over a mere 24 hours, Ashley's fate was more spun around than a barstool, as the house came together unanimously to give her her last call.

Now out of the house, Ashley talks with Parade about her reaction to why she got the boot, who she would have worked with if she had stayed, and her rapid-fire thoughts on the remaining houseguests.

Let's start with how things came to an end: The 14-0 vote. You certainly had a reaction when you heard that vote count, but what were you feeling at the time?
So it was a half shock, half not. I really did know going into the voting that a lot of people already were aligned with Taylor. She had a group behind her. And that was kind of my whole theory of going around in my campaign. I was like, "Hey, they're splitting up the house. You don't want to be with that. They're gonna take over. Choose me, choose me. I have nobody! I'll be of use to you." So I kind of also thought that I might have had the votes just because I feel like I did have a little campaign going there for me for a second to stay. My palms were sweating. As each person went in, I was like, "Oh, maybe that was me!" But no, a little bit too optimistic up here that night.

Let's talk about your campaigning. You were told you were being kept by people like Drew, Dee, Barrett, and Haley. You then proceeded to go to Lyric, Mallory, and Melody and tell them that you were safe, even naming the people that were named to you. What was your intention in doing that?
I was just putting myself in [someone else's] shoes. If somebody came up to me and they said, "Wow, it looks like five of these people are voting to keep Ashley. I don't want to be on the outside of that." Especially because Melody really explained to me she didn't want to be on the outside; nobody wants to be. So I thought it was just going to be a perfect little bit of convincing that they needed to just nudge and be like, "Okay, this is the group's decision."

But I guess Taylor just did an even better job of that. But she also had people speaking for her. Yes, that whole clan you just named of Drew, Angela, Barrett, and Dee said that they had me. But I don't know if necessarily they were going around and spreading the news, or if they were just trying to like appease me and be like, "Ashley, girl, ease your anxiety, ease your nerves."

Well let me try to clarify things here. For what it's worth, for some time, they did want to keep you. But basically what happened was that Melody was alarmed at what you told her, assuming there was another side to the house. And so she told Drew and Barrett about what you said. They proceeded to report back to their alliance what happened, and things turned on you when they felt you were untrustworthy for outing them in the plan. What's your reaction to that?
Hearing that, I hate it. Because I actually would have never thought of that scheming plan. The whole entire reason I started actually doing that scheming and that whole shebang of trying to put the house against each other is because they did simply give me that advice. They were like, "Go out with a bang!" And I was like, "Whoa! I hope I'm not going out." So I mean, I took their advice to go and say all of those things. I would have never played that hard necessarily. And so I hate that they got spooked and it kind of got back. Maybe I just didn't do it the way fully that they wanted me to, but I definitely did it because they did tell me to.

You got confronted by Haley about outing the plan in quite the intense conversation. What was your reaction to that?
Oh my gosh! That kind of made my heart drop to my butt because I was I'm being confronted for something right now. And once again I just kind of felt a little bit shocked because she didn't like that I was telling Kamu that she was in to keep me. But that was a little bit confusing to me because, I mean, she said herself she was going to keep me. And also all the other people that said they were going to keep me said, "Yeah, and Kamu's in." So I thought I was free of speaking. I was like, "Oh, if we're already communicating about keeping me, I feel like it's free game to say we're doing this." So it's like I felt like I couldn't talk to the people about keeping me, who I heard was already keeping me, and it was just weird. I was like, "Whoa, I'm getting in trouble right now."

One of the reasons you were sitting up on the block in the first place is because Dee was looking to nominate someone who was fairly unconnected in the house to not get blood on her hands. And you spoke with Julie about not being able to "find your people" in the game. How do you look back on the speed you played with in this first week?
It's so hard in the house to tell who is actually starting talk game for sure. I had my very first game talk on Day 2 with Dee. It was pre-nominations, and I kind of was just like, "Hey, girl, what are you thinking?" That's what you do on Big Brother. And then she immediately was like, "Oh, well, I hear your name being thrown out." And I'm like, "Whoa! That means game talk has already begun. Maybe instead of doing a little 5 p.m. Day 2 game talk, I should have done this Day 1. I'm behind on the ball." You don't realize how fast the game is moving in Big Brother. So honestly, yes, like I should have skipped the, "Hey, what's your family home dog's name? What is your favorite color" and just [go to], "Tell me, do you want to work with me?"

Let's say you stayed in the house. Were they any particular people you wanted to work with moving forward?
Oh my gosh! In that house, I was looking for any ounce of loyalty that I could find. If I would have stayed into next week. I would have been like, "Hey, did you vote for me?" And I would have worked with them for sure. I would have stayed so loyal, and I would have had my people.

If you had won HoH, was there anyone specifically you were looking to target?
I am not sure, obviously, just because I did feel so weird with everybody. But if I had to think, it would just be the people who I like talked the least amount of game with. I mean, I didn't say a single thing about the Big Brother house whatsoever with Lala, I believe. So I mean, Lala might have been just on the radar, just because we've literally only had personal fun talk.

Oh my gosh! I would be crazy not to sit here and get a new bucket list item of the beef and cheese I have yet to consume. And I feel a little bit lame now, because that was a great party trick to be able to say, "Hey, and do you know what I've never had?" So I definitely now have to get a list of all the best and eat them up.

Some of rock's most enduring songs have come from the simplest conversations, and Uriah Heep's "Easy Livin'" is proof, having been written in just minutes.

Uriah Heap was part of the '70s rock scene and were considered among the pioneers of the genre. In 1972, they released their second single, "Easy Livin'", from their Demons and Wizards album. The track received moderate success on the charts, landing at No. 39 on the Billboard Hot 100, and made bigger waves overseas in Europe.

Among the band's list of classics, "Easy Livin'" has often been tagged as one of their signature hits that came together in a taxi on the way home. The band was putting in the work to push out new demos and recordings to continue their momentum of growing popularity and had finished a marathon three-day studio session.

On the way home, keyboardist and guitarist Ken Hensley was struck with inspiration over a conversation they were having. They were rushing to finish their album before heading on tour when the topic of rock stars having it "easy" came up.

"We were having a conversation, and someone mentioned how people think we have such an easy life, how we just show up, collect the dollars and go home. The words ‘easy life’ stuck in my head. When the taxi dropped me off at my flat, I went in, put the kettle on, sat down at the piano, and within about ten minutes that song was finished," explained Hensley, according to Louder.

The track would help skyrocket Uriah Heep from an up-and-coming band to arena heavyweights. Hensley knew "Easy Livin'" was a great track, but never believed any of their tracks would reach the level of fame that they did.

"I knew we had a great song for the band and it translated into a great live song but, since I never wrote (nor write) with a particular 'destination' in mind, I hardly ever considered that a song may succeed to any extent at all," he said.

“We never really saw it coming. It hit radio hard – and in those days radio wasn’t just hugely influential in America, it was influential everywhere. It was like riding on a magic carpet. We were playing sold-out arenas around the world, playing to thousands of people at festivals, making tons of money. [Laughs] Although I still don’t know where most of it went.” 

While the song put the spotlight on the band as future rock icons, it also quieted the critics who had been against the band since their inception in the late '60s. Critics felt that the band didn't have what it took to make a name for themselves, but "Easy Livin'" proved them wrong.

“It overcame a lot of the lack of credibility that the band had suffered from within the media,” said Hensley. “We were finally impressing some people. But the people we wanted to impress were the ones that bought the records and the concert tickets.”

Smith didn't hold back in his first post, pairing a summary of the halftime lineup with a burst of frustration and a string of hashtags aimed squarely at FIFA and its president, Gianni Infantino. A few hours later, he followed up with a lengthy clarification (written almost entirely in scattered capital letters) explaining that his frustration wasn't with the performers themselves, but with the very idea of a World Cup final halftime spectacle, tying it to his broader disdain over the format's growing spectacle and commercialization. He also took aim at President Trump's expected appearance alongside Infantino to present the trophy.

Smith, a longtime supporter of west London club Queens Park Rangers, posted his comments the same week England was eliminated from the tournament following a loss to Argentina - a crushing defeat that also had Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger visibly disappointed on camera.

Five words were all it took. After months of a shoot Matt Damon has called the hardest of his career, it was his daughter, not a director or a critic, who told him it had all been worth it.

Damon stars as Odysseus in Christopher Nolan's adaptation of Homer's epic, which opens in theaters July 17. Speaking with PEOPLE, the actor didn't sugarcoat how demanding the production was. "This movie was by far the hardest movie to the most challenging movie I've ever been a part," he said, describing it as "more like an expedition than a movie."

One of his four daughters, whom he shares with wife Luciana Barroso, watched the finished film. When the credits rolled, she turned to her father with her reaction. "She saw The Odyssey, and at the end of it, she actually turned to me, and she said, 'Dad, I'm proud of you,'" Damon recalled. Moments of sincere compliment from a daughter are rare (as those of us who are dads can attest to). "She's never said anything like that because we joke around a lot, and so at that point, I was like, 'I'm good,'" he said. "It was all worth it."

Damon has previously shared that his daughters and wife sacrificed time with him while he was away filming, and that having all four of his girls at the film's London premiere meant just as much to him as any review from a critic.

"The Odyssey" marks Damon's third film with Nolan, following "Interstellar" and the Best Picture winner "Oppenheimer." Damon said his history with the director made the decision to sign on an easy one, crediting Nolan's hands-on approach. "I don't know another director that sits in every wardrobe fitting with every actor from, like, the initial meeting all the way through the design," he said. Even so, Damon has compared the scale of adapting Homer's poem to the challenge Nolan faced turning a biography into "Oppenheimer," calling the script "a beautiful piece of writing" despite the odds against pulling it off.

Damon detailed the physical toll of the shoot, recalling that the cast and crew were constantly at the mercy of the elements. "We were out in the weather, whether we were cold, uncomfortable, getting rained on," he said. It's the kind of production story that usually ends with an actor talking about craft or endurance. Instead, Damon's turning point came from his own living room.

For an actor with three Oscar nominations and decades of blockbusters behind him, it's touching that the accolade he chose to focus on was one from his daughter, and, truth be told, probably something all dads out there can relate to in one way or another.

Whether you do guided workouts using a fitness app, YouTube or classes at your local gym, you can bet that any ab-related training is going to require planks. “Planking is a great way to train trunk and core strength with no equipment required,” personal trainer Taylor Beebe, PT, previously told Parade.

While it’s true that planks are a great way to tone your abs, this workout move isn’t accessible to everyone. Doing a plank on your hands and feet can put a lot of pressure on the wrists. For some people, planks (either on the hands or elbows) can cause low-back pain. Or maybe, they simply aren’t for you.

Rest assured that there are plenty of other ways to strengthen your core, something that REP Fitness certified personal trainer Rosie Borchert, NASM-CPT, says is crucial for moving easily in daily life, including in old age.

“Core strength is everything—and I’m not just talking about six-pack abs,” Borchert explains, adding that core strength helps with maintaining proper posture (both sitting and standing), keeps the body balanced and stable and protects the spine.

“If you want to get better at your sport, strengthen your core. Looking to lower the risk of falls as you age? Strengthen your core. Occasional back pain? See a physical therapist, but they’ll probably tell you to strengthen your core,” Borchert says.

If you’re looking for a plank-free way to do exactly that, keep reading. Here, personal trainers share four core-strengthening moves that won’t hurt your wrists or lower back.

How To Know if You Have a Strong Core

If you want to strengthen your core, it’s important to know exactly what muscles we’re talking about. The core is comprised of six muscles: the rectus abdominis (the long, vertical “six-pack abs”), internal and external obliques (located on the sides of the abdomen), transversus abdominis (the deepest abdominal muscles, spanning horizontally between the lower ribs, spine and pelvis and underneath the “six-pack” abs and oblique muscles), lumbar multifidus (located against the spine) and the erector spinae (located on either side of the vertebral column). 

“Our core is on the clock throughout the day, and if you’re able to tackle daily activities without a problem, can maintain a solid upright posture and you’re not faced with lower back pain, your core is doing a pretty good job,” Borchert says.

She also notes that building core strength can help prevent or lower back pain, pointing to one scientific review showing that core-based exercises were one of the most effective interventions for reducing chronic lower back pain. 

Borchert explains that when any part of the core muscles is weak, other muscles are used to compensate. This, she says, can put additional stress on the lower back, which leads to pain. This is why strengthening your core muscles can help.

4 Exercises That Train Your Core as Effectively as Planks, Trainers Say

With that in mind, here are four moves for strengthening your core—no planks needed. 

1. Dead bug

This is a move recommended by both Borchert and certified personal trainer Morgan Rees, ACE-CPT. “This move builds deep core control while keeping the spine supported,” Rees says.

Borchert adds to this, saying, “This anti-extension move is all about control. As you alternate moving your arms and legs up and down, you’ll want to actively work to keep your lower back pressed to the floor and core tight.”

Here’s how to do it:

1.  Lie on your back with your arms reaching toward the ceiling and knees bent at 90 degrees.

2. Slowly lower one arm and the opposite leg toward the floor, then return to the starting position and switch sides. 

3. Do two sets of 12 repetitions per side.

2. Superman holds

“Typically, core work focuses on the front side of your body. This move helps to give the back side of your core a little TLC,” Borchert says, explaining why she recommends the Superman hold. She adds that it also targets the erector spinae, while also recruiting the glutes and hamstrings to help lift your legs.

Here's how to do it:

1. Lie down on the floor on your stomach, with your legs and arms extended.

2. Lift your arms, chest and thighs off the floor while engaging your core.

3. Hold for between 10 and 30 seconds.

3. Pallof press

Both personal trainers say the Pallof press is a great plank-free way to build ab strength. “It trains anti-rotation strength, which is essential for protecting the spine during real-life movements,” Rees says.

Borchert adds, “The obliques fire to keep you from rotating, while the transverse abdominis, erector spinae and glutes engage to help maintain stability.”

Here's how to do it:

1. Using a resistance band or cable machine, stand sideways to the anchor point. 

2. Hold the handle at your chest, then press your arms straight out in front of you while resisting rotation.

3. Do two sets of 10 slow, controlled repetitions per side.

4. Suitcase carry

Borchert likes this move because it mimics movement that’s helpful in everyday life, while also giving the obliques some targeted attention. “This is an anti-lateral flexion move, meaning your core will work against being pulled sideways by the weight,” she says.

Here's how to do it:

1. Place a heavy dumbbell or kettlebell on the floor.

2. Without rounding your back, pick up the weight with one hand by hinging at the hips and bending the knees. Roll your shoulders back, engage your core and let your arms hang straight down. You should be holding it just like you would a suitcase.

3. Walk across the room while holding the weight and taking slow, controlled strides.  

4. Set the weight down and repeat the move, picking it up with your other hand.

When You’ll Notice a Difference

As with any form of exercise, if you really want to notice a difference in your core strength, consistency is key. Both trainers recommend doing these four core-strengthening moves two to three times a week. “The key is quality over quantity. Good form matters more than doing a lot of reps,” Rees says.

Especially if your workout routine already includes plenty of compound lifts (like squats, deadlifts, rows and presses), Borchert notes that your core is likely getting a significant amount of work, so you may not need as much dedicated core training. 

If you haven’t been doing any core-strengthening exercises and you commit to doing these four moves two to three times a week, you’ll likely notice a difference in the first week or two. “If you continue working with progressive overload, while also prioritizing rest and recovery, you’ll likely start to notice improvements in endurance and strength in the first month or two,” Borchert says.

In terms of seeing a visual difference, Rees explains that this typically takes between six and eight weeks and depends largely on what other diet and lifestyle changes one is making.

The benefits of core strength are way beyond skin-deep. If you want to be able to move easily well into old age, having a strong core is key. As you can see, consistently devoting a little time to core-strengthening each week pays off big time, both for your health now and in the future.

If you're an avid Hagar fan, you likely know this isn't the first time he's chosen Cabo as his birthday destination — it's become something of an annual tradition, where his signature Cabo Wabo tequila flows and the songs keep the party going long after sundown.

How To Score Tickets

Tickets will be $79 and limited to two per person for the can't-miss event. One can only wonder how they chose that number...

Fans hoping to score tickets will first need to register online between July 20 and July 31, with winners selected through a random drawing on August 3. Everyone has the same odds regardless of when they enter, and those chosen will receive an email link. Any remaining tickets will later be released during a public on-sale.

If you prefer chancing Lady Luck, a limited number of dinner show tickets will be sold in person at Cabo Wabo Cantina the day before each concert on a first-come, first-served basis.

Each celebration takes place Oct 9, 11, and 13. Accommodations are not provided, but Travel + Leisure just revealed Zadún Los Cabos, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, as Cabo's top hotel for 2026.
