Psychologist Kelly McGonigal's Advice on How To View Stress Is Actually So Inspiring
Stress is a very real issue that most of us deal with daily, some more than others. We’re often trying to find ways to reduce the amount of pressure we’re under or find ways to handle it better. But health psychologist Kelly McGonigal has given presentations and written books about ways to think about stress differently. Her 2013 TED Talk, “How to make stress your friend,” is one of the most-viewed on their platform with over 36.4 million views. In it, she makes the case that there are ways to turn this pressure into a positive thing. And our quote of the day focuses on that idea of reframing stress.
According to TEDTalk, McGonigal is a “leader” in the “science-help” space. She “translates academic research into practical strategies for health, happiness and personal success.” She is a psychologist in both “the worlds of research and practice,” and holds positions in the Stanford Graduate School of Business and the School of Medicine, they also reported.
As she wrote on her website, her two most popular books first started out as psychology courses she was teaching at Stanford University. For example, The Willpower of Instinct was originally a course called “The Science of Willpower,” and her most recent book, Joy Is a Risk Worth Taking, was an online course called “The Science and Practice of Joy.”
On top of all that, she shared that she was the psychology consultant for The New York Times Education Initiative, and interviewed professionals like scientists and authors for Public Radio’s City Arts & Lectures. She’s also worked to develop “programs for schools that integrate psychological science into student wellness and support.”

This quote is from McGonigal’s 2012 book, The Upside of Stress: Why Stress Is Good for You, and How to Get Good at It. The book’s description calls it a “controversial and groundbreaking new book that overturns long-held beliefs about stress.” It mentions that almost half of Americans lose sleep over stress, and are often trying to reduce the amount of stress they’re experiencing. However, McGonigal’s book pushes the notion that “stress isn’t bad,” backing it up with research and explanations.
It “is the first book to bring together cutting-edge discoveries on the correlation between resilience—the human capacity for stress-related growth—and mind-set, the power of beliefs to shape reality.” The book also includes exercises and stories that aim to show you how to embrace stress, how it can “provide focus and energy” and more.

Deeper Meaning of Kelly McGonigal’s Quote—Reframing StressWhether you can fully reframe the way you think about stress or not, McGonigal’s initial statement is true. If you feel an intense emotion about a situation, then you care about it in some regard.
Because of that, stress shouldn’t be something you should be avoidant of or “run away” from, as McGonigal puts it. She states that you should embrace it and “step forward” to address the pressure you’re feeling. As with many things we care about, it’s good to face things head-on to either figure out a remedy or at least why you’re feeling stress and anxiety and not another emotion.
Stepping to the plate when it comes to something that’s stressing you out is one way to start addressing that emotion, whether that’s finding a way to make stress your friend or finding ways to alleviate it.

This '80s TV Icon Was Nearly Passed Over Before Becoming a Household Name
It's hard to imagine anyone other than Ed O'Neill playing the sarcastic shoe salesman Al Bundy on Married…with Children.
But according to David Faustino, the actor who portrayed Bud Bundy for the sitcom's entire run, the role almost went to someone else.
During an appearance on the Pod Meets Worldpodcast, Faustino, 52, revealed that Fox executives weren't initially sold on casting the relatively unknown O'Neill, 80, as the patriarch of television's most dysfunctional family.
"They didn't want him, like, at all," Faustino recalled.
He said then-Fox executive Barry Diller opposed casting O'Neill, believing the role should go to a bigger name.
According to Faustino, the disagreement even affected the show's production schedule.
"They lost six episodes because of it," he said, explaining that the fight over casting delayed the series before O'Neill was ultimately chosen.
The decision would go on to become one of the defining casting choices in television history.
Premiering in 1987, Married…with Children ran for 11 seasons and more than 250 episodes, helping establish the Fox network while turning O'Neill into a household name.
His portrayal of Al Bundy, a perpetually frustrated shoe salesman who longed for his high school football glory days, became one of the most recognizable sitcom characters of the era.
O'Neill later went on to star as Jay Pritchett on ABC's Modern Family, earning three Emmy nominations and introducing himself to an entirely new generation of television fans.

Here's to an endless summer...
The season technically concludes later in September, but a brand-new music festival was just announced to descend on Southern California before October hits.
On Thursday, July 16, Goldenvoice announced Ocean Way Festival to take place September 26-27 on the beach in Santa Monica. It boasts a celebration of music, food, wellness, design, sustainability and beach culture.
The inaugural lineup features headliners The Killers and Olivia Dean, alongside big names such as Jack White, Sublime, Hot Chip (DJs) and more.
With the Santa Monica Pier framing the main stage, Ocean Way promises to bring together rock, soul, indie, house and beyond across two stages for an all-ages, day-into-night experience on the sand. Check out its recent Instagram post below.

"COMIN OUT OF MY CAGE," wrote one Instagram user, a clear nod to The Killers' anthem "Mr. Brightside," while another person commented, "can’t wait to dance by the water with you all 🌊🌊."
The festival takes its name from Ocean Way, the Santa Monica street where Allen Sides founded what would become Ocean Way Recording studios more than four decades ago.
“Santa Monica is in the middle of a renaissance," said Mayor Caroline Torosis in a statement. "The city is welcoming the world to its shores, and Ocean Way Festival is how we're making sure our own community is at the center of it."
Ocean Way is reportedly designed from the ground up as a sustainable, transit-first festival experience. There will be no on-site parking by design, as LA Metro's E Line terminates steps from the festival entrance, Big Blue Bus and shuttle service are available, and bike valet and micro-mobility options are built into the experience.
Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Thursday, July 23 at 11 a.m. PT here, with a Santa Monica residents presale beginning Wednesday, July 22 at 11 a.m. PT.

This Forgotten Johnny Cash Recording Marked the End of His First Era
Before Johnny Cash became a global music icon known as the Man in Black, he was one of the defining artists of Sun Records, the legendary label that helped launch the careers of some of rock and country music's biggest names.
On July 17, 1958, Cash returned to Sun Records for what would become his final recording session with the label, recording two songs that marked the end of an important chapter in his career: "Down the Street to 301" and "I Forgot to Remember to Forget."
At the time, Cash was already one of Sun Records' biggest stars. His breakthrough hits, including "I Walk the Line," "Folsom Prison Blues" and "Cry! Cry! Cry!", had helped establish him as a distinctive voice in country music, blending traditional sounds with the energy of early rockabilly.
But by 1958, Cash's relationship with Sun Records was nearing its end. Later that year, he would leave the label and sign with Columbia Records, beginning another major era of his career that would include some of his most iconic recordings.
His final Sun session represented a turning point between two stages of Cash's musical journey.
"I Forgot to Remember to Forget" was especially notable because it had originally been a hit for another Sun Records legend, Elvis Presley, in 1955. Cash's recording offered his own interpretation of the song, adding another connection between two of the label's most influential artists.
While these final Sun recordings did not become among Cash's biggest commercial hits, they remain an important piece of his history. They captured the singer during a pivotal moment just before he transitioned from a rising rockabilly performer into one of the most respected and enduring artists in music.
Cash's move to Columbia Records would allow him to expand his sound and explore deeper storytelling themes, eventually leading to classics like "Ring of Fire," "I Still Miss Someone" and his legendary live albums recorded at Folsom Prison and San Quentin.

2012 Tribute to a '70s Legendary Rock Band Brought the Frontman to Tears—For an Extremely Personal Reason
Watching the 2012 Kennedy Center Honors for Led Zeppelin was truly magical. Not only was the honor well-deserved, but the tributes that followed were also iconic. In particular, Heart's choir-backed rendition of "Stairway to Heaven" had just about everyone in their feels, including the band itself. Fans were quick to spot the tear-filled eyes of both Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, and assumed it was all due to Ann Wilson's incredible vocal range and Nancy Wilson's fiery guitar licks.
However, another factor wasn't necessarily being considered: the late John Bonham's son, Jason Bonham, was there and killing it on the drums. What's more, Plant had no idea he was even going to be there. Recently, after Concert Legacy pointed it out, Bonham himself added a bit of color and context to the situation.
"Well, in fact, I was a surprise to them they didn’t know I was coming but right before I walked on Robert turned to Jimmy and said 'we really should’ve invited Jason to this event' as they had all of their children and family there," Bonham wrote. "He points at me and I pointed back to him as if to say 'I got you this time you had no idea what I was coming.'"
But that wasn't the only interesting factoid Bonham dropped about the performance.
"On the evening in the performance I played in silence," he confessed. "Nothing worked. I couldn’t hear the band I couldn’t hear anybody and it wasn’t till I watched it back that I felt emotional but I’ve got to perform that with an amazing choir string section. I gotta hear the horn section cause they were right next to me. I actually suggested [Ann] and Nancy be the ones that take part to the musical director. Robert Plant's Connection to John Bonham and His FamilyThe truth is, Plant had an extremely special bond with "Bonzo" beyond that of bandmates. While touring, Plant received the horrific call that his 5-year-old son had taken extremely ill and had sadly died. Years later, Plant recalled just how supportive Bonham was during that devastating time.

Losing him three years later was nothing short of a tragedy. After Bonham died, Plant made it clear that the band couldn't go on without him. And while many have pleaded for them to reunite with Bonham's extremely talented son, it has remained too much for Plant.
In an interview with Billboard, Jason Bonham explained exactly what the legendary frontman told him regarding joining up:
"He said, ‘I loved your dad way too much. It’s not disrespect to you, you know the stuff better than all of us, and no one else who is alive can play it like you. But it’s not the same. I can’t go out there and fake it. I can’t be a jukebox. I can’t go out there and try to do it that way."
Plant does, however, occasionally sing a mellowed-out version of a few Led Zeppelin songs while touring with his band, Saving Grace, much to the delight of fans.
Despite being one of the greatest voices and talents in music history, Plant is not interested in capitalizing on his life and experiences. In a 2025 interview with Rolling Stone, Plant was asked if he'd ever consider writing a memoir or signing off on a biopic, to which he said without hesitation, "Not a chance". When asked why, he simply said:
"I’m going down with the ship, and so is my memory".

’80s Metal Band, Once Disbanded for Two Years, Announces 2026 Tour
Mayhem delivered an exciting announcement to fans following its European tour earlier this year.
After reuniting in 1995 following a two-year hiatus that began after the 1993 death of Euronymous, the band, legendary Norwegian black metal band fronted by Hungarian vocalist Attila Csihar, continues to cement its legacy on the road with another European run.
In an Instagram update, the quintet shared the dates and locations for the forthcoming tour, scheduled throughout October.
The trek will kick off in Budapest, then continue through major cities across Serbia, Romania, Greece and more before concluding in Cologne, Germany.

Jamey Johnson’s 51st birthday was a star-studded affair at the Grand Ole Opry on Tuesday, July 14. The country legend celebrated another trip around the sun with a special Opry lineup of guests. They were Opry member Bill Anderson (who inducted him into the Grand Ole Opry in 2022), ERNEST, Randy Houser, Lee Brice, Tracy Lawrence, Ruby Leigh, Lily Meola, Andy Whatley & Co. and others.

“You really want to know why I cut it? Because of the shock factor,” Lawrence admitted in an interview with Whiskey Riff, of the reason he released the tune, written by Bobby Braddock. “Because the radio had never played anything that says ‘Smokes a lot of dope’ in it, and I knew that it would either be a massive record just because of the shock factor of it, or it would die a violent death. There was no in-between. And it came out of the box with a bang.”

'80s Rocker Says Metallica 'Always Had an Attitude Like They Were Better Than Everybody Else'
Long before Metallica became one of the biggest bands in rock history, they were just another hungry act playing clubs around Southern California. But according to Ratt drummer Bobby Blotzer, they already carried themselves differently than everyone else.
In a resurfaced Classic Rock interview recently republished online, Blotzer reflected on Ratt's early years on Los Angeles' Sunset Strip and recalled one of the first times he crossed paths with Metallica.
"I remember Metallica opening for us in some church in Pasadena," Blotzer said. "It wasn't an active church any more; they were using it for shows."
What stood out most wasn't the venue.
"Metallica always had an attitude like they were better than everybody else," Blotzer recalled. "I didn't get their trip then."
At the time, Ratt was chasing radio-friendly hard rock while Metallica was helping shape a much heavier sound.
"We were trying to write catchy 'airplay' songs that still had a rough edge," Blotzer said. "They were playing the stuff that we wouldn't want to play, over-riffing and not catchy. But who's got the last laugh?"
The comments came as the members of Ratt looked back on the early 1980s Sunset Strip scene, where bands including Van Halen, Mötley Crüe, Quiet Riot, W.A.S.P. and Great White were all fighting for attention before many of them became household names.
Singer Stephen Pearcy also remembered how electric the Los Angeles club scene felt in those days, recalling that he watched Van Halen perform before the band signed a record deal—and no one was there.
"I used to sit on the stage at the Whisky A Go-Go when Van Halen played in front of 18 people," Pearcy said. "I'd be s---ting my pants, thinking: 'This is crazy.'"
Ratt would soon become one of the defining bands of the glam metal era, breaking through with Out of the Cellar in 1984 and the hit single "Round and Round." Metallica, meanwhile, went on to pioneer thrash metal and become one of the best-selling bands in music history.
Looking back decades later, Blotzer admitted he didn't understand Metallica's appeal at the time. History, however, ultimately answered the question he posed himself.

1974 Classic Ballad, Once Spent 32 Weeks Charting, Became a Soft Rock Anthem
Released in 1975, "Feelings" became one of the decade’s most unforgettable ballads, turning Brazilian singer-songwriter Morris Albert into an international star.
The emotionally charged single spent an impressive 32 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 6, and quickly became one of the defining soft rock hits of the era. More than 50 years later, its simple melody and deeply personal lyrics continue to resonate with listeners around the world.
Albert wrote "Feelings" several years before it became a global success.
Built around little more than piano, strings and his earnest vocal performance, the song captures the pain of lost love through direct, conversational lyrics. Rather than relying on elaborate production, its emotional honesty became the driving force behind its widespread appeal.
"The inspiration, that's the plain truth, was a woman, a beautiful woman from Rio," Albert told Revista Istoé in 2004. "Everything I write is something I've experienced in life, or
seen happen, or wanted to convey. 'Feelings' had a muse. I was 19, she was 30, it was a platonic attraction, nothing happened."
Though Albert never revealed the identity of the woman who inspired the song, he explained that she was a public figure.
"This love lingered in my mind for a long time; I couldn't tell her I loved her, so I wrote it," Albert said. "I remember it well. I was in a house in São Paulo, preparing the songs for my first LP—it was the vinyl era—I was alone, it was raining heavily outside, I couldn't sleep. The lyrics came all at once, directly in English."

Disney World Guest Dies After Tragic Medical Emergency on It's a Small World
A newly released state report has revealed that aWalt Disney World guest died after suffering a medical emergency while riding one of the resort's most iconic attractions.
According to documents from the Florida Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services that were obtained by TMZ on Thursday, July 16, a 54-year-old man with a pre-existing medical condition experienced a cardiac emergency while riding It's a Small World back on April 24. The guest was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died.
The incident only recently became public after it appeared in the state's latest theme park injury report, nearly three months after it occurred. The report did not indicate that the attraction itself caused the medical emergency, only that the incident happened while the guest was on the ride. The heartbreaking case is one of several recent deaths connected to Disney parks, though not all have occurred on attractions. Earlier this year, authorities also launched an investigation after a body was discovered at Disney Springs. Late last year, a separate incident at Disneyland also made headlines last fall when a guest reportedly died after suffering a possible heart attack while riding Haunted Mansion. Another involved a man in his 60s who suffered a medical episode at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground before later dying at a hospital. Another woman in her 40s also died after being transported to a local hospital, while two additional guests died at Disney resort hotels during the same period—one sadly due to suicide.
Authorities said there were no signs of foul play in the cases where details were made public, and none of the incidents were reported to have happened while guests were on rides.
