In 1976, Al Stewart released a song that would become the defining hit of his career and one of the most enduring soft rock classics of the decade.

"Year of the Cat" captivated listeners with its mysterious lyrics, cinematic storytelling and unforgettable melody, eventually becoming a staple of classic rock and soft rock radio.

What many fans may not realize is that the song was inspired by one of the most celebrated films ever made.

Stewart's idea for "Year of the Cat" originated after watching Casablanca, the legendary 1942 romantic drama starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. The singer imagined what might happen if a traveler encountered a mysterious woman in a foreign city, creating a story that captured the same sense of romance, intrigue and uncertainty that made Casablanca famous.

"One night the Casablanca movie comes on and I’m thinking 'In a morning of a Bogart movie. In a country where they turn back time.' sounds like a good start," Stewart told The Strange Brew. "But I need a line for the title. I had a girlfriend who had a book on Vietnamese astrology. Although it was the year of the rabbit in Chinese astrology, in Vietnamese astrology it was the year of the cat. I don’t know a lot, but I do know a good song title when I see one and that was it."

The result was one of the most evocative songs of the 1970s.

Built around lush piano, soaring saxophone and richly detailed lyrics, “Year of the Cat” unfolds like a movie, following an enigmatic encounter through vivid scenes and imagery.

The track appeared on Stewart’s album of the same name and became his biggest commercial success, helping introduce him to a wider audience beyond the folk circuit where he had built his reputation.

Part of the song’s lasting appeal comes from the fact that Stewart never fully explained every lyric, allowing listeners to develop their own interpretations.

"I thought A, I want to write something completely different, something that hasn't existed in pop music before, and B, I just wanted to use language that hadn't been there before," Stewart told Goldmine. "If I can write about original concepts with original language, that rings the bell for me. That's what I wanted to do. I didn't want to regurgitate things that have been done before."

That mystery has fueled decades of discussion among fans, who continue to debate exactly what the song means and who the woman in the story represents.

Musically, the track also stands out for its ambitious arrangement, highlighted by a memorable saxophone solo from Phil Kenzie and elegant piano work that helped give the song its cinematic feel.

Over the years, "Year of the Cat" has remained one of the defining songs of the soft rock era, regularly appearing on classic rock playlists and radio stations around the world.

Nearly 50 years after its release, the song continues to transport listeners into a world of mystery and romance, proof that inspiration from one of cinema's greatest films can sometimes lead to a timeless musical classic of its own.

Peter Frampton, 76, is taking fans back to 1976. In a resurfaced interview with legendary journalist Dan Rather, Frampton revealed just how quickly he wrote "Baby, I Love Your Way" and "Show Me the Way" from his 1976 album release Frampton Comes Alive!

The British rock legend shared a surprising story about how he wrote the two songs and how little time it took, proving that sometimes rock's greatest anthems don't require months of work.

“It was quick,” Frampton revealed of the songwriting session in which he wrote both "Baby, I Love Your Way" and "Show Me the Way."

In the revealing sit-down interview, Frampton explained that he had gone on a three-week writing retreat in the Bahamas under pressure to create material for Frampton, the studio album that preceded his legendary live release.

Frampton recalled the stress of a looming deadline after spending the first two weeks of the retreat without producing anything he considered worthwhile. With only about a week remaining and the pressure mounting, inspiration finally struck.

Picking up his guitar at the start of that final week, he first penned "Show Me the Way" in just 20 minutes.

How "Show Me the Way" and "Baby, I Love Your Way" Were Written on the Same Day

Riding the momentum of that breakthrough, Frampton decided to keep going. He recalled taking a swim, having lunch, and then returning to his guitar later that day.

As the sun began to set, he found inspiration in the changing light and shadows around him, ultimately writing "Baby, I Love Your Way."

"And as they're moving across the page. And that was baby, I love your way," he recalled, referencing the imagery that inspired the song's lyrics.

Frampton humorously summarized the prolific day, joking, "That's a really good day, to say the least."

Oops, he did it again! Chris Appleton is ‘the’ hair stylist to the stars. His roster of famous clients includes A-listers such as Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez, and Ariana Grande. And now it looks like he can add one more notable name to his list —Britney Spears!

The iconic pop superstar has made headlines for some less-than-stellar behavior in recent weeks. Last March, Spears was arrested for suspicion of DUI, in April, charges were filed against the performer, and in May, she made a plea deal, getting 12 months' probation and a $571 fine.

In a new Instagram post, Appleton shared a pic of himself with Spears. In the photo, Spears holds a bouquet of beauty tools and shows off her straight, glassy golden locks.

The celebrity hairstylist also shared a heartfelt caption, writing, “As a kid growing up in England, Britney Spears was the soundtrack to so many moments. Never in a million years did I think I’d one day be standing behind the chair (or in this case her standing behind me, lol) styling her hair.”

He continued, praising Spears, “Some moments really do come full circle. She is not only an icon, but one of the most genuinely kind and gentle souls I’ve ever met.” 

Fans and a few famous faces flocked to the post, sending their love to both Appleton and Spears. Kim Kardashian commented with two heart emojis, and Selling Sunset’sChrishell Stause wrote, “This is what the world needs.” And author and motivational speaker Natasha Adamo added, “This is incredible!! So proud of and to know you. Love this and how much it meant to you.”

While this is the first time Appleton has had the opportunity to work with the megastar, he’s publicly discussed Spears’ hair before. Last year, he talked about his top Britney looks (in a TikTok post), saying, “That’s my personal favorite. The ‘Slave for You’ hair was so hot. And it was just, I feel like, so ahead of its time. Like the wet look, it was like sexy, piecey. She had the bangs.” 

Based on his latest Instagram post, it looks like Appleton didn’t go with the ‘Slave for You’ style and instead chose something sleek and sophisticated. And, also based on his post, it seems like Britney couldn't be happier with it!

There have probably been countless musicians who prayed for the inspiration to write a hit song, but those prayers don't always get answered. In the case of Grand Funk Railroad's Mark Farner, though, somebody was apparently listening when he asked for songwriting help from above.

Released as a single from Grand Funk Railroad's 1970 album Closer to Home, "I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home)" was the band's first top 40 single, peaking at #22 on the Billboard Hot 100. Clocking in at around 10 minutes long, the tune was like nothing else Grand Funk Railroad had recorded before, shifting into a different style around halfway through. The first part tells the story of an ailing ship's captain pleading with his murderous crew to bring him back home; in the second half, the repeated lyrics seem to be sung from the perspective of the captain's ghost: "I'm getting closer to my home."

Not your typical rock and roll subject matter, but then again, Farner's process for writing the song was an unusual one. As he told Goldmine Magazine in 2024, the lyrics came to him in the middle of the night.

"That song is spiritual to me. I prayed for that song," Farner said.

"I said my, 'Now I lay me down to sleep' prayers, like I do every night, like my mother, God rest her soul, taught all six of us kids," he continued. "I always said to bless all the cousins, all the aunts, uncles, grandmas, grandpas, and I put a p.s. on the end of it, 'God, please give me a song that will touch and reach the hearts of those you want to get to.' I wasn’t sure that 'Closer to Home' would be a song when I wrote it. I am always writing things. I have a steno pad next to my bed on the nightstand, along with a pen, and in the middle of the night, I will write stuff. Most of it is not songs, just getting thoughts out. So, it was not unusual for me to wake up and start writing, but what was unusual was, the writing process was different from what I had normally done, which is writing a verse, then looking back at the top, re-reading it, and moving onto the second verse. That night, I instinctively knew that if looked back, I would lose the flow, and I was not completely awake. I was somewhere between heaven and earth in my mind and these words started coming."

Farner was "completely exhausted" when he finished writing the tune, which went on to become as meaningful as he hoped it would — particularly to one segment of fans.

“'Closer to Home' became an anthem for our Vietnam soldiers because they wanted to be home," Farner said. "The Vietnam Veterans of America had me come and play 'Closer to Home' at the 25th anniversary of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall in 2007, in Washington, D.C. There were more than just American veterans. There were also Canadian veterans."

"I was overjoyed to be there and told them that rather than just playing a song, I am going to play a full set for you," he recalled. "I’ll bring my band on our tour bus. We’ll do a show, and it won’t cost you guys a nickel. We’ll do it because we love you, and we want you to know it. When we got to that song, their eyes were so wide. There were soldiers hugging who never knew each other before but fought in the same war. It was a wonderful experience and that’s what I think of when I think about 'Closer to Home.'"

Hundreds of thousands of teens are putting on their prom dresses to a song older than they are. 

While Tom Petty may have written "Mary Jane's Last Dance" to get out of a record deal, three decades later, it's back on the charts because of an unlikely source — TikTok. 

During prom season, which typically runs from April through June, users film themselves holding up their prom dress and lip-syncing to the track. Right as Petty sings "take me as i come, cause I can't stay long," the video transitions to them fully dressed and ready for the night.

The sound has been used in nearly 1 million posts, introducing one of Petty's most beloved songs to a whole new generation.

And with that, it's no coincidence that the GreatestHits album from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers is currently sitting at No. 10 on Billboard's Top Rock Albums chart, moving up steadily over the past several weeks.

The classic record features hits like "Free Fallin'" and "Something in the Air," but it's "Mary Jane's Last Dance" that appears to be driving the resurgence. 

In the early 1990s, Petty was focused on getting out of MCA Records and over to Warner Bros. He agreed to write two new songs for the compilation in exchange for his release. 

He held up his end of the bargain and accidentally wrote one of the greatest tracks of his career in the process. 

At the time, Petty was running on empty, preoccupied with recording Wildflowers. He had no desire to pull songs from that project for a hits package he hadn't wanted to make in the first place. 

Producer Rick Rubin, already on board for Wildflowers, agreed to produce the two new tracks as well. Petty handed him a cassette of unreleased demos as a starting point.

“It wasn’t like, ‘These are great new songs,’” Rubin recalled to Rolling Stone in 2016. “It was more like, ‘Listen to these. See if you hear anything.’”

Nothing on the tape grabbed Rubin at first. But tucked between two songs was a brief riff, "like after someone tuned up, just the first chords they played." 

“So I called Tom and was like, ‘Hey, this whole phrase is really good. You may want to write this song.’” Petty gave it a shot and wrote "Mary Jane's Last Dance," which went on to become his first Billboard Top 20 single of the 1990s. 

According to Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell, though, the song came very close to being called something else.

”It was called ‘Indiana Girl,’” he told SongFactsin a 2003 interview. “The first chorus was, ‘Hey, Indiana girl, go out and find the world.’”

“We cut the song and Tom was singing the chorus,” Campbell recalled, “and he decided he just couldn’t get behind singing about ‘Hey, Indiana Girl.’” About a week later, Petty came back with something “better,” and the chorus became "Last dance with Mary Jane." 

As for who Mary Jane actually is, Petty kept that to himself for years. The one thing he did reveal, in a January 2010 Mojo interview, was that Mary Jane is the same woman from "American Girl," only "with a few hard knocks" along the way.

On June 1, 1972, Atlantic Records released Aretha Franklin's Amazing Grace, a live gospel double album that would go on to outsell every other record she ever made. The album was captured over two nights that January at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles, with gospel great James Cleveland and the Southern California Community Choir behind her. For Franklin, who grew up singing in her father's Detroit church, it was a homecoming rather than a detour. She poured everything into it, and the room felt it.

Never No. 1, Yet the Best-Seller of Her Career

David Gates, the undisputed architect of the soft rock ballad, built a career on quietly devastating love songs as the frontman of ’70s-era soft rock pioneers Bread. From “Lost Without Your Love” and “If” to "Diary" and “Make It With You,” the classically trained musician keenly captures unrequited love and the pain of moving on. But few songs crystalize emotional heft more deftly than the band’s 1972 ballad “Everything I Own.”

A timeless tribute to love and loss, “Everything I Own” was the second single released from Bread’s 1972 landmark album, Baby I’m-a Want You. And even though it’s often mistaken as a romantic love ballad, Gates actually wrote the lyrics about the loss of his father. 

According to the Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh book,1000 UK #1 Hits, via Songfacts, a friend shared with Gates at his father’s funeral, "Your dad was so proud of what you were doing.” 

Gates reportedly agreed, replying, “My success would have been so special to him as he was my greatest influence. So I decided to write and record ‘Everything I Own’ about him. If you listen to the words, ‘You sheltered me from harm, kept me warm, gave my life to me, set me free,’ it says it all.”

When Gates’ father died in 1963, the musician was just beginning to see success. In an interview with The Guardian, he shared a bit more about writing the song as an homage to the “kind and gentle man” who was “revered by everyone.”

“He always had time for me and taught me to read and write music, play various instruments, and introduced me to classical music, my foundation,” Gates shared. “One year I sent my mom an orchid for her birthday, which I could scarcely afford. She was so touched – my dad wrote to tell me I could have had ‘anything she owned’ in return.” 

He added, “As with all my songs, the music led and the words tried to keep up, but they came pretty quickly. I wrote the lyrics — ‘I would give everything I own just to have you back again’ — so that they could be interpreted as a love song, but when I played it for my wife, she knew right away that it was about my father. She cried.”

Ambiguity is one of the track’s best assets, as it casts a wider net with which to resonate. Another is the chorus’ melodic harpsichord, contributed by Larry Knechtel. Needless to say, the song was an instant smash, peaking at No. 5 on the Hot 100 and enjoying 13 weeks bobbing on the chart. The track also helped propel the album, still widely considered one of the greatest soft-rock albums of all time, to No. 3 on the Billboard 200.

Now retired from the stage, Gates is 85 and living with his wife, Jo Rita, on their property in Mount Vernon, Washington. He is the sole surviving member of Bread's original lineup, following the deaths of Jimmy Griffin and Mike Botts in 2005, and Larry Knechtel in 2009. And with Father’s Day on the horizon, the song’s quiet ache hits a little differently.

For nine seasons, millions of viewers tuned in to Everybody Loves Raymond. There was just one problem—Ray Romano never really loved the title.

The comedian reunited with series creator Phil Rosenthal and several of the show's writers during a panel at the 2026 ATX TV Festival in Austin on Saturday, May 30, where he revealed he spent years trying to convince CBS to rename the hit sitcom.

According to Romano, the title actually came from a sarcastic remark made by his real-life brother, a New York City police officer.

“When the show was starting, I was a comedian, and all I did was self-deprecating humor,” Romano explained, per PEOPLE. “My brother, who in real life is a New York City policeman, came home one day, saw that I got an award for some stand-up comedy that I did, and he said sarcastically, 'Raymond goes to work and they give him awards. I go to work, and people spit on me. Everybody loves Raymond.' ”

Rosenthal loved the line so much that he worked it into the script and eventually into the show's title. The 68-year-old, however, immediately began campaigning for alternatives. “When I complained, you told me that it's a working title,” he recalled to Rosenthal.

When CBS executives fell in love with the name, Romano even went directly to the network president with new suggestions. While they were open to it, the agreement was that “Raymond” stayed in the title. Among his proposed replacements were That Raymond Guy, Raymond's Tree, and his personal favorite, Um, Raymond.

Romano was concerned that if the show became a massive hit, he'd be stuck with the title forever. “And I go, 'Don't you understand? This show is going to be a hit, it's going to be top 10, and I'm going to have to live with this for the rest of my life,' ” Romano remembered.

Ironically, that's exactly what happened. The sitcom ran from 1996 to 2005, earned 69 Emmy nominations, won 15 awards, and remains one of television's most beloved family comedies.

These days, Romano has a lot more important things on his mind than a decades-old sitcom title. The actor recently became a grandfather after his daughter, Ally Romano, welcomed her first child, a son named Rex Roman Wilezol. Ally shared the news one month after giving birth, posting an adorable photo of the newborn on Instagram.

A fundraiser has been organized over the weekend for former Snot, Sevendust and Amen guitarist, Sonny Mayo, who recently had a sudden heart attack and an emergency triple bypass heart surgery.

A triple coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) is a surgery that creates detours around three blocked heart arteries. Surgeons take healthy blood vessels from the chest, leg, or arm to restore proper blood flow to the heart muscle, typically requiring open-heart surgery.

"Our dear friend Sonny suffered a heart attack and had a life-saving triple bypass surgery. Please support Lara and Sonny while he recovers over the next couple months," organizer Megan Wright wrote on Meal Train. "The first month home will be full-time caretaking for Lara and will be the highest risk for infections and sickness, so bringing meals to them will support his recovery tremendously! If you can’t bring a meal, please continue to cover them in prayer!"

In 2018, Mayo was diagnosed with a genetic coronary artery disease after suffering two heart attacks over the previous several years. A year after his diagnosis, the guitarist went to Panama to receive stem cell therapy. Since the treatment, Mayo's health has improved dramatically.

"After having two heart attacks due to coronary artery disease, I went for stem cell treatment at the Stem Cell Institute. Not only did my heart function improve, but my overall health improved remarkably!" he told the Stem Cell Institute.

Mayo started his music career in the 1980s when he began playing in a thrash metal band called Silence and performing with them around the DC Metro and DMV area. In 1995, Mayo moved to Santa Barbara, California, and joined Mikey Doling and Lynn Strait's band Snot as their guitarist. He also toured with other groups, including Sevendust and Amen.

Though Snot has only released one studio album since their formation more than 30 years ago, the American rock band was very influential in the rock scene during the late 1990s and early 2000s. When Strait suddenly passed away in 1998, Snot disbanded, but ended up reuniting again a decade later with Tommy Vext on vocals. The group recorded three songs together before disbanding again.

In 2014, Snot reunited again at the Whisky a Go Go in the West Hollywood neighborhood in Los Angeles, and did three other shows before breaking up again for a decade. Doling teased the return of Snot in late September, and they had their first show in January 2025. Mayo ended up leaving Snot for good in April 2025 to spend time with his family.

"Snot doesn't fit into his life right now, and he just wants to focus on himself and his life. And Snot's just too busy for him to be able to continue," Doling said. "I'd like to wish Sonny Mayo the best of luck in his future, and I wanna thank him for all he's contributed to Snot over the years. We love you, brother."

Outside of music, the 54-year-old guitarist co-founded Rock to Recovery, a music therapy non-profit, in 2014.

Since the fundraiser that was created on Sunday, Mayo has garnered over $5900 in donations, and friends are providing meals throughout June.

"Thank you first of all to Megan for making this and to all of you for your love and support! Sonny is in a lot of pain and it will be a challenging road to recovery. This was his 3rd heart attack and they could not put any more stents in. His main arteries were 80% blocked, so this painful but necessary surgery has saved his life," Lara Mayo, his wife, commented in the fundraiser. "I’m so beyond grateful to God that he is still with us. If you have met him, you know how amazing he is - thank you all for helping and being in our life and sending up much-needed prayer!!!"

While answering viewer questions on her show, The Right View, Lara Trump revealed that she thinks her husband, Eric Trump, looks just like his dad. And that means she kind of has a crystal ball into her future.

So, when I look at pictures of, especially my husband as a kid, he looks so much like my daughter, Carolina. Like the face, the whole thing, her coloring, all of it. And I kind of think my son looks a little bit like my dad when my dad was younger.”

Does Lara Trump think her husband looks like President Trump?

Yes, Lara does think Eric resembles his famous father. She went on to share, “I will say this, that when I look back at photos of my father-in-law, there’s, I think it’s a Time Magazine with him on the cover, and he was probably like in his late 30s, so around my husband’s age. My husband looks a lot like his dad did at that time.”

Lara continued, “So, I guess I know what’s in my future. I know what I got to look forward to.” She also compared the similarities between the president and her husband to his older brother, Donald Trump Jr., saying, “So they look very similar. He certainly looks more like his dad, I think, than Don. Don is more dark-complexioned, and he certainly got more of the Czech genes from their mom than I think Eric did. Maybe he got a lot more of the Trump genes. So we’ll see how it goes.

What do Lara’s viewers think about the resemblance? Her show posed the question to the public on Instagram, and commenters seem to agree with her assessment. One wrote, “Oh yes! Eric is the image of his Dad,” and another said, “Absolutely.” But some didn’t exactly agree.

Canadian progressive rock legends Saga are preparing to celebrate a major milestone. The band has officially announced plans for a special world tour in 2027 to mark its 50th anniversary.

The announcement was shared with fans on X, where the group revealed that the celebration will be called “Saga 50: 1977–2027: The Generations Tour.”

In its message to fans, the band stated:

“Well we can’t hide it any longer! SAGA welcomes you to our 50th ANNIVERSARY TOUR IN 2027!”

The group also confirmed that more information about the upcoming trek will be released soon through its official website, sagagen.com.

The announcement arrives as Saga continues to enjoy a remarkable career that has spanned nearly five decades, producing hit songs, acclaimed albums and a loyal international following.

Saga was formed in 1977 in Oakville, Ontario, by bassist Jim Crichton, vocalist and keyboardist Michael Sadler, guitarist Ian Crichton, drummer Steve Negus and keyboardist Peter Rochon.

Over the years, the band developed a distinctive sound built around melodic progressive rock, powerful guitar riffs, layered synthesizers and ambitious songwriting. Their music helped them stand out during a period dominated by arena rock and radio-friendly pop acts.

The current touring lineup features Michael Sadler on lead vocals and keyboards, Ian Crichton on guitar, Jim Gilmour on keyboards, Mike Thorne on drums and Mike Borkosky on bass. Canadian musician Brad Park also provides additional touring support on selected dates.

The upcoming anniversary tour follows a challenging period for frontman Michael Sadler. After undergoing treatment and recovery following a cancer diagnosis in 2024, Sadler has returned to live performances and remains part of the band's core lineup.

Fans can expect additional details regarding tour dates, venues and ticket information in the coming months.

Saga's journey began with the release of its self-titled debut album in 1978. The band quickly followed with Images at Twilight in 1979 and Silent Knight in 1980, helping establish its growing reputation in Canada and Europe.

The group's breakthrough came with the 1981 album Worlds Apart. The record earned Gold certification in the United States and featured two of Saga's best-known songs, “On The Loose” and “Wind Him Up.”

“On The Loose” became the band's biggest American hit, reaching No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100, while “Wind Him Up” gained significant exposure through MTV. The success of Worlds Apart helped introduce Saga to a wider audience and paved the way for larger international tours.

In 1982, the band received the Juno Award for Most Promising Group of the Year. Additional success followed with albums such as Heads Or Tales, which produced fan favorites including “The Flyer” and “Scratching The Surface.”

Throughout its career, Saga has released 22 studio albums, numerous live recordings, and several compilation collections. The band is also known for creating “The Chapters,” an ambitious science-fiction song cycle that unfolded across multiple albums over nearly three decades.

The project became one of the most unique concepts in progressive rock history, helping strengthen Saga's reputation among dedicated fans.

The band's influence extends well beyond Canada. Saga has maintained strong popularity in Germany, Scandinavia, the United States, Puerto Rico and other international markets. According to the group, it has sold more than 10 million albums worldwide and performed for millions of fans across more than 20 countries.

Their latest studio release, Symmetry, arrived in 2021 and showcased acoustic reinterpretations of classic material.

Now, as the band approaches its 50th anniversary, Saga is preparing to celebrate one of the longest-running careers in progressive rock.
