For decades, "Electric Avenue" has been remembered as one of the most infectious pop hits of the early '80s — the kind of song that instantly sparks nostalgia the second it starts playing.

But despite its upbeat energy and singalong chorus, the 1983 smash hit wasn't written as feel-good escapism at all. Inspired by riots, poverty and social unrest in London, the song carried a message many listeners completely missed.

"Even though it has that upbeat, you can dance to it vibe, the song is actually a serious protest track — A lot of people don't know that. Came out of the violent Brixton riots in London back in 1981," Adam Reader of Professor of Rock revealed.

He explained that the song, written by Eddy Grant, "came out of the violent Brixton riots in London back in 1981."

Electric Avenue in London got its name in the late 19th century after becoming one of the first streets to be lit by electricity.

The neighborhood, which housed a large Caribbean population, was "dealing with crushing poverty, high unemployment, and heavy-handed policing," Reader explained.

After packing up for a move to Barbados, Grant's luggage, including a "batch of new songs," was lost in transit.

"Eddy Grant wrote the song as a wake-up call about what working-class people were trying to endure," Reader continued.

Forced to start from scratch, he "came up with one of his best songs he's ever done."

The song, released on his 1982 studio album Killer on the Rampage, peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, and found international success in the U.K., Canada and Australia.

"In many ways, Eddy Grant was a trailblazer. Not just for what he did with the music video, but he actually cut his teeth in pop and ska across England and Barbados," Reader concluded.

On the latest episode of Top Chef: Carolinas, the Top 4 cheftestants competed in the biggest Quickfire of the season and then they were challenged to plate dishes on unusual vessels for the Elimination Challenge.

It was one of the best Elimination Challenges I think this show has ever seen and the elimination was a huge bummer just because everyone did so well.

The final Quickfire of the season involved judge Tom Colicchio preparing a "Billi Bi" by way of Spain, which is a creamy French soup made with mussels, white wine and heavy cream. Kristen Kish, Gail Simmons and Tom ate the dish, then the chefs were tasked with looking at and smelling the plate with the remnants and playing 20 Questions (five per chef) to try to figure out Tom's dish—and the questions would only get yes or no answers. The person who got the closest to his dish won $20,000, biggest individual prize of the season.

Ultimately, the winner was Rhoda, which—seriously?! After the way you jobbed Sherry out of $10,000 two weeks ago, you couldn't have picked Sherry? Weak sauce.

The Elimination Challenge focused on plating by way of making them use weird things as their plates. They were given pretty much free reign as to what they could cook within a $200 budget.

Rhoda chose a piece of wood, Laurence chose a set of tiny silver bowls mounted on pipes, Jonathan chose a white ceramic pedestal and Sherry chose the trapeze, which is string between two wooden sticks with a bunch of clothes pin-like holders.

Their dishes were as follows:

• Jonathan: Pumpkin seed dinner roll with pumpkin puree and compound butter.
• Laurence: Cheung Fun four ways, which is a Cantonese street food.
• Rhoda: Grilled ribeye, beet soil, baby carrots and turnips, burnt leek puree and pickled seaweed.
• Sherry: Korean BBQ short ribs, pear kimchi, rice and banchan.

As far as the interesting vessels go, everybody absolutely crushed it. The judges were blown away. So the elimination came down to some very tiny nitpicks.

In the end, best dish was awarded to Sherry! And the bottom two (if there even is a bottom at this point) were Jonathan and Laurence, with Jonathan being sent home for having a tiny bit less of a meal-connecting-to-the-vessel connection than the other chefs. That was it. What a bummer.

Next week: On the finale, "The Final Toast," the final three chefs are asked to create the best progressive four-course meal of their lives; the finalists must impress an esteemed table of diners, including chefs Eric Ferguson, Camari Mick and Nok Suntaranon, and Top Chef alums Sara Bradley, Joe Flamm and Stephanie Izard. At the judges' table, Kristen, Tom and Gail are joined by chefs Brandon Jew and Val Cantu to determine who will be named the next Top Chef.

Classic rock’s revival streak continues. Progressive rock pioneers Emerson, Lake & Palmer have released a newly restored video for their Grammy-nominated cover of “Peter Gunn” while also announcing a remaster edition of their Works Live album, dropping July 24 via BMG.

The newly unveiled visuals spotlight the band’s explosive take on the instrumental piece, originally penned by legendary composer Henry Mancini for the 1958 NBCdetective series Peter Gunn. ELP first introduced their version in 1977, transforming the noir theme into a sprawling high-energy live showcase that became a staple of their stage performances and later earned the group a Grammy nomination.

Alongside the video release, the band’s Works Live album is being reissued in a newly remastered format, reportedly restored to the double-vinyl presentation originally envisioned by the late Keith Emerson. The updated edition will also include fresh artwork and liner notes. 

Though Emerson, Greg Lake, and Carl Palmer defined the band’s original run, Palmer has continued to champion the band’s legacy through his ongoing multimedia touring project, Welcome Back My Friends - An Evening With Emerson, Lake & Palmer, which blends live performance with archival and digital recreations of his late bandmates. Today, the song is back in the stratosphere not only because of ELP’s groovy new video and album news, but also because the stellar track is featured in the trailer for David Fincher’s newest film, The Adventures of Cliff Booth, a spinoff of Quentin Tarantino's Oscar-winning Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood film, also starring Brad Pitt. 

Four decades later, ELP’s explosive interpretation of “Peter Gunn” is finding new life and once again proving the staying power of rock’s most theatrical era.

A long-lost piece of horror history that was thought to have long ago been destroyed has been saved from the depths of a historic English theater, and genre buffs will soon have the chance to take it in for themselves.

No Such Thing As A Vampire, the premiere episode of a six-part anthology series that aired on the BBC in the late '60s, reportedly got the permanent boot from the network after viewers complained that it was too scary for television—which, coincidentally, had been Harry Moore's intent all along (the scary part, not the total ban).

The producer once emphasized how much more "effective" he felt horror was late at night, according to Film Is Fabulous, aiming to “screw up the audience’s tension" with his series. "We have gone all out to make them really scary. We have great casts and good writers," he said, according to Film is Fabulous. "We have tried to take everyday situations which are believable and given them a horror treatment.”

The discovery was "purely by chance," Darren Payne, the founder of Dirt in the Gate Movies, told the organization, which is dedicated to recovering and preserving vintage TV, in a new interview.

A board member of The Regent, a nearly 100-year-old cinema in Christchurch, Dorset, uncovered the film reel in a silver tin in a small storage area of the theater. There isn't much in the way of records for the film, and everything else that was found with it, but Payne noted that "they have certainly been there for several years and were on the verge of being thrown away."

He was called in to check out this particular reel, which had "Late Night Horror" handwritten across its label. As a "passionate horror aficionado," the title "rang a distant bell" for him.

When Payne took the reel home to play on his personal projection set-up, he "had to pinch [him]self" when he realized what had been uncovered. "Lo and behold it turned out to be the long-lost first episode of the Late Night Horror series," he said. "...it was an astonishing and quite emotional moment." Even better, it appears to be in excellent condition.

Now, the long-lost piece of horror history will be screened for the first time in almost six decades later this year at Grindfest 2026, an annual film festival curated by Payne's film company that screens cult, sci-fi, and horror at The Regent. It's also being scanned digitally and returned to the BBC archives.

No Such Thing As A Vampire is based on a short story by I Am Legend writer Richard Matheson. It follows a woman being cared for by her husband while suffering from a mysterious illness. Four of the six parts remain missing, with The Corpse Can’t Play, which was recovered only a decade ago, being the only other episode known to still exist.

Fans were more than enthusiastic over the discovery, applauding the preservation team for their work.

"Amazing!!! 🎉🎉 Been waiting for this for years," one admitted, while another agreed, "I remember this well. Great find."

"Honestly, this is just magnificent," someone else marveled, as another called it "genuinely an incredible find."

For those not local to the theater, there is hope yet that you can view the episode, too—the BBC is currently focused on restoring the color to the black-and-white copy of the recording, but Film Is Fabulous is waiting to hear more from the network about potential streaming plans.

Metallica, the legendary heavy metal band, made a record-breaking achievement as they continued their M72 World Tour.

Amid the extensive European and U.K. shows this spring and summer, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2009 inductees once again proved their enduring legacy after making concert history at Berlin’s Olympiastadion.

On May 30, Metallica took the stage with an impressive 15-song setlist, performing classic hits such as “Creeping Death,” “Of Wolf and Man,” “72 Seasons” and more, closing with “Enter Sandman.”

With the blistering set list and high-octane performance, the band drew a massive crowd that set a record at Germany’s biggest stadium concert.

For the Berlin concert, Metallica pulled in over 94,000 metalheads to watch the show, reaching the standard maximum capacity of the venue, typically holding around 74,000 for events.

It surpassed the stadium’s previous record of a sold-out crowd of 88,000 by fellow rocker U2 in 2009 during their 360° Tour.

Following the impressive milestone, the “Nothing Else Matters” hitmakers updated their social media to express their gratitude to the “Metallica family” for the huge support at their Berlin show.

“Night after night, city after city, the #MetallicaFamily is bringing it! Yesterday, over 94,000 of you helped break the record for the biggest EVER show at Olympiastadion. Thank you!” the caption reads, along with a view of the stage showing the massive crowd.

The comment section was filled with fans reacting, as they celebrate the band's unforgettable concert.

“Not only at Olympiastadion, but also the biggest show ever in Germany,” one wrote.

“Metallica keeps on breaking record after record! The in-the-round setup truly does wonders!” a commenter said.

“We are all the Metallica-Family. The best setlist I've ever seen at a Metallica concert. I've seen them nine times before,” another added.

“It was the best concert of my life. I love Metallica. Thank you, Metallica,” a follower echoed.

The same goes for a different Instagram user who said, “It was amazing! Thanks for the epic night, Metallica.”

This is not the first time that an award-winning band attracted a huge number of concertgoers to a single concert.

Back in 2023, Metallica packed roughly 78,000 fans on each of their two shows at SoFi Stadium, eclipsing Taylor Swift's single-show attendance mark of approximately 70,000.

Both crews survived difficult charters, workplace drama, and high-pressure yacht life, but only one came out on top financially. By season's end, the Below Deck Down Under Season 4 crew had earned thousands more in tips than the Below Deck Mediterranean Season 10 team.

Tip totals continue to climb in the Below Deck universe. While Captain Sandy Yawn's Season 10 crew—including Chief Stew Aesha Scott, Bosun Nathan Gallagher, and Chef Josh Bingham—raked in an impressive $219,000 in tips, Captain Jason Chambers' Below Deck Down Under team ultimately came out ahead. Led by Chief Stew Daisy Kelliher, Second Officer João Franco, and Chef Ben Robinson, the crew earned a staggering $235,700 during the season.

Notably, both Below Deck Mediterranean and Below Deck Down Under out-earned Captain Kerry Titheradge’s Below Deck Season 12 crew in tips. The team brought in a total of $195,490, averaging $15,037 per crew member.

Captain Jason shared the impressive total with the crew during the Season 4 finale, prompting cheers all around. Crew members who completed the entire charter season took home $26,189 each in tips alone—earned over roughly six weeks of work and on top of their regular salary. Captain Sandy's crew didn't do too badly either. Those who worked the full season of Below Deck Mediterranean earned approximately $19,900 each in tips, making for another highly lucrative charter season.

Captain Jason was so pleased with his crew that he couldn't find the right yachtie to wear the disco helmet that night. When João joked that Jason should rock it, he joked, "If I have to strip down for a tip, I'll wear the helmet for sure."

Captain Sandy said the tips were so high because of the crew's performance. “This season, the tips were great because of the performance of the crew,” she said during the season 10 finale. “The joy that they had was wonderful. To reflect on everything that happened, and how we stuck together — it was pretty freaking amazing.”

Below Deck Mediterranean returns on Monday, June 8, promising another season of high-seas chaos, shifting alliances, and crew drama.

Set against the stunning backdrop of Dubrovnik, Croatia, Captain Sandy reunites with Aesha, Nathan, and Deckhand Joe Bradley aboard the new M/Y Akira One for their most dramatic season yet. As Aesha manages a competitive new interior team while planning her wedding, Chef Joy Lefaucheur navigates demanding guests and mounting tension in the galley.

Meanwhile, Nathan balances life as a new father while training new deckhands, and growing friction with Joe threatens to split the deck crew. Unexpected departures, surprise returns, and shifting alliances keep the season on a collision course for chaos.

Below Deck Mediterranean Season 11 launches on Monday, June 8 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Bravo.

This year, just in time for Father's Day, Netflix added two iconic '90s movies to its streaming slate for dads everywhere — Father of the Bride and Father of the Bride Part II. According to What's On Netflix, both family comedies became available to subscribers on June 1.

Fans have come to love both films for their relatable depictions of a father (Steve Martin as George Banks) coming to terms with seeing his only daughter (Kimberly Williams-Paisley as Annie Banks) mature into womanhood. Father of the Bride centers on George's journey to walking Annie down the wedding aisle, while Father of the Bride Part II focuses on George's wife (Diane Keaton as Nina Banks) and daughter becoming pregnant at the same time. Martin Short and Kieran Culkin also appear in each film, adding significant star power to both, with Charles Shyer as director.  

Father of the Bride was first released in 1991, and its sequel in 1995. Years later, a franchise was established thanks to the 2020 follow-up short film, Father of the Bride, Part 3(ish) written and directed by Nancy Meyers, and the 2022 reboot, Father of the Bride, starring Adria Arjona, Andy Garcia, and Gloria Estefan. The Steve Martin-led movies were remakes of Vincente Minnelli's Father of the Bride (1950) and Father's Little Dividend (1951). Golden Age Hollywood icons Spencer Tracy, Elizabeth Taylor, and Joan Bennett led the cast.

In the years following Shyer's silver screen adaptations, most of the actors involved in his Father of the Bride set not only became highly sought-after Hollywood stars, but also remained close. Steve Martin and Martin Short went on to collaborate on a variety of well-known projects, including Hulu's acclaimed mystery dramedy, Only Murders in the Building. And the pair, along with several of their fellow Father of the Bride castmates paid their respects to Diane Keaton after her untimely passing in 2025.

The Father of the Bride legacy lives on, and with the 90s version and its sequel now on Netflix, Father's Day this year just got even more heartwarming.

Season three of HBO's Euphoria was criticized for its sexualization of Sydney Sweeney, but the showrunner, Sam Levinson, has revealed that the actress fought to keep these scenes included.

In the show, Sweeney's character, Cassie embarks on her career as an influencer and adult content creator. This graphic role included plenty of nudity, innuendos and racy costumes. Levinson was condemned for his treatment of Sweeney and her Euphoria character, but now it's been revealed that they were all her idea.

“Well, it’s funny. When I first wrote it, I was like, ‘Maybe we shoot all of this and we don’t have any ----- Maybe there’s ways to shoot around certain things?’” Levinson said in an interview with The New York Times.  “And she looked at me and she was like, ‘Are you kidding? I’m playing an -------model. You’re telling me you’re going to, like, skirt around it?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, OK, that’s a fair point.’” 

The writer/director called Sweeney a “totally fearless actor,” and praised the Christy star for her on-set ethics. “She’s also just wonderfully professional and shows up just game every day. I adore working with her because there’s such a flexibility in terms of the performance. There’s a lot of trust that we have," he explained, per The Huffington Post.

On why he decided to give Cassie that career, he admitted he wanted to "tackle" the topic. "There is a level of absurdity to it that is just fun and we’re always trying to come up with ways to make it feel authentic and humorous and dramatic and also speak to the larger wants and wishes of the character.”    

In The New York Times, Sam promised that there was still safety on set for his actors, especially during these raunchy scenes. "Even when you go up to audition, let’s use the role of Cassie, you know the role requires a certain amount of nudity. Are you comfortable? If they’re comfortable, they get the role, then the next layer is the intimacy coordinator. I think it’s a SAG rule that if an actor then says, after getting cast, ‘Actually, I don’t want to do that,’ we can’t force them to do a scene,” he explained

He emphasised that the strongest, most honest performances come when an "actor feels free and safe", without any tension on-set. "The emotion is going to be blocked. And that’s something I’ve known from my days of studying acting. So my job is to create the kind of best, most conducive environment for the actor to play this character.”

Sydney also recently hit out at her critics, posting an Instagram carousel of behind-the-scenes photos from the season, which was announced as the show's last, with the caption: “It’s called…acting.”

After over 50 years of knowing each other, RickSpringfield and SammyHagar are opening up about aging, performing, and their friendship.

The duo spoke to People ahead of Springfield joining the former Van Halen frontman for eight shows in June during his "Best of All Worlds" summer tour.

At 76 years old, the “Jessie's Girl” singer shared that his profession is what energizes him.

"Music keeps you young anyway," he said. "And rock music definitely keeps you young."

For Hagar, 78, the secret to not feeling his age is the beach.

"I'm a beach nut. Man, you can't keep me off the beach. No shoes, no shirt, no problem, all that," he said. "My wife will say, 'Honey, please put on a t-shirt, we have people coming over.' I'm like fine I'll try. I call swim trunks my uniform."

The pair met in the early 1980s when Hagar wrote “I've Done Everything for You,” which Springfield sang.

More than 50 years later, the "Don't Talk to Strangers" singer shared, "We're as old as old people!" While both musicians might be approaching 80, Hagar doesn’t feel he acts his age.

"I think Rick occasionally acts like an adult," he said. "Not an old person, but every now and then he acts like an adult. But I rarely do! It's funny, to think of my grandpa and how he was at 60... the world has changed, but I don't even think about age."

The Red Rocker admits some things have changed since he has gotten older.

"Sometimes I go to bed at 8 p.m., and sometimes I stay up late when I'm working in the studio,” Hagar said.

Adding, “I mean, that's what I love to do and alcohol comes into play and that's a very natural thing — music and alcohol and rock and roll, it's always been a good time," he said. "But I don't get drunk anymore. No hangovers. I'm smarter than that now. I learned that in my 50s!"

In 1979, Supertramp released a song that would become one of the standout tracks from one of the decade’s biggest albums.

"Goodbye Stranger" combined a catchy piano riff, sharp songwriting and a legendary guitar solo to create a classic that still resonates with listeners 47 years later.

The song appeared on Breakfast in America, the blockbuster record that transformed Supertramp into international stars and produced multiple hit singles.

Written and sung by Rick Davies, "Goodbye Stranger" explores themes of freedom, independence and life on the road. Its narrator embraces a wandering lifestyle, choosing movement and adventure over long-term commitments.

"We realized that a few of the songs really lent themselves to two people talking to each other and at each other," Davies said in an interview. "I could be putting down his way of thinking and he could be challenging my way of seeing life."

Supertramp singer and songwriter Roger Hodgson added, "Our ways of life are so different, but I love him. That contrast is what makes the world go 'round and what makes Supertramp go 'round. His beliefs are a challenge to mine and my beliefs are a challenge to his."

Musically, the track is instantly recognizable thanks to its distinctive electric piano riff, which drives the song from the opening moments and remains one of the most memorable keyboard hooks of the era.

The song's reputation, however, has been elevated even further by its celebrated guitar solo.

Performed by Roger Hodgson, the solo arrives near the end of the track and has long been regarded as one of the finest moments in Supertramp's catalog. Its melodic phrasing and emotional feel helped transform an already strong song into a fan favorite.

Over the years, many listeners have cited the solo as one of classic rock's most underrated guitar performances.

"I think it's good having another writer in the band, because then you have the friendly competition which helps bring out the best in each other, and I think that was the case with the two of us," Hodgson told Songfacts. "When it came down to arranging, I was really the main arranger in the band. I heard Rick's songs and heard what they wanted to be, so I added a lot of the colors and harmonies and textures to Rick's songs. And in the opposite way, Rick came up with some quirks on mine, so it was a relationship that worked on that level, too."

The track has also enjoyed a long afterlife through film, television and streaming playlists, helping introduce it to generations who were not around when it first appeared on radio.

Nearly five decades later, "Goodbye Stranger" remains a shining example of what made Supertramp unique: sophisticated songwriting, impeccable musicianship and the ability to create songs that were both commercially successful and artistically ambitious.

For many fans, that iconic piano riff and soaring guitar solo remain as compelling today as they were in 1979.

Is Chef Ben Robinson and Second Officer João Franco's friendship permanently fractured after their guest cabin blow-up on Below Deck Down Under?

Apparently not — but it took some mediation from Captain Jason Chambers to get Ben, João, and Chief Stew Daisy Kelliher in the same room and remind his self-proclaimed "dream team" why they were chosen in the first place.

The tension erupted in the previous episode when Ben, hoping to clear his head and get a good night's sleep before the final charter, settled into a guest cabin that had already been prepared for incoming guests. Daisy was furious, arguing that her stews had spent valuable time getting the room charter-ready and that Ben's decision was disrespectful to their work. João stepped in after noticing Daisy was too frustrated to confront Ben herself, but his involvement quickly escalated the situation, resulting in the two friends hurling expletives at each other.

When Captain Jason summoned his HODs, he clearly wasn't accepting any pushback. "We have to clean up this mess," he tells his team, adding, "Enough's enough. Remember where we were at the start of this when we all came together and we said this will be the nucleus, the four of us?"

He continued, "We said we were all going to stick together. And what happens? Lack of accountability. Less communication. Egos. We're bigger people than that."

Captain Jason said tensions between the interior and galley reached a boiling point the previous night, adding that with a 24-hour turnaround, it wasn't okay for Ben to jump into a made bed the night before. "That's disrespectful. That's the tone that I'm actually seeing that's not right," Captain Jason said, reiterating that they have one more charter and they should remain a united front and an example to the rest of the crew.

"I'm going to take ownership of this and try better, do better," Ben admits in a confessional, reflecting on his behavior.

João apologized to Ben after Daisy and Captain Jason left, leaving the two to hug it out. Later, Ben approached Daisy to "hash out a couple things," where he apologized directly to Daisy for sleeping in the guest cabin. She pointed out that his insistence on sleeping in the guest cabin was also disrespectful to her stews.

"You are my friend, I want you to know that," Daisy said to Ben as they had a moment of levity when João emerged from the bathroom in the cabin where they were meeting, joking that Elena "Ellie" Dubaich was still in the tiny bathroom behind him.

Despite their disagreements, Daisy, Ben, and João left Katina as friends, ending another successful charter season.

In a stroke of sheer genius, the country music singer-songwriter and former Voice contestant recruited recently crowned ACM Entertainer of the Year Cody Johnson and country music icon Clint Black for a playful TikTok dance video, and the results are nothing short of spectacular.

The video begins with Johnson, Roberts, and Black in a close-up shot, all lip-synching “The Puerto Rico Song” by Saxboy Billy, a catchy little ditty that has up and taken over social media in recent weeks. From there, the trio break into lighthearted choreography —  snapping, shoulder shimmying, and leaning fully into the moment — before Roberts goes off on brief solo turn.

What makes the video stand out is the unlikely pairing of three distinct eras of country music: Black, a defining voice of '90s country; Johnson, one of today's leading traditionalists; and Roberts, a rising artist bridging the gap between generations. General Hospital has confirmed that former Australian soap opera Neighbors star Dean Geyer will be joining the cast this summer in an exciting brand-new role.

Geyer was first spotted on set when the soap posted a promotional video celebrating the filming of the soap opera's 16,000th episode in the midst of a cast shot. Now TV Insider reports that Geyer will play Tristan Roberts.

Little is known about what brings Tristan to Port Charles, but the character is named after the late Tristan Rogers, who played Robert Scorpio on and off from 1980 until his death in 2025.

No specific timeline for Geyer’s first appearance was given, as June 1, 2026, was the actor's first tape date. However, with General Hospital’s taping schedule, the actor is expected to make his first appearance in the coming weeks, with the 16,000th episode scheduled to air on July 13, 2026.

TV Insider also revealed that Geyer is under contract, which would keep him on-screen for an extended period.

Geyer rose to television prominence in 2007 with his appearance on Australian Idol, where he placed 3rd.

He then made a year-long appearance on the Australian soap opera Neighbors between 2008 and 2009 as Ty Harper, before departing to pursue other opportunities.

In addition to his soap and reality TV roles, one of his most popular roles came from the FOX musical dramady GLEE, where he played Rachel Berry’s (Lea Michelle) boyfriend during the Season 4 premiere.

His most recent credited appearance was on the hit ABC series 9-1-1.

Earlier this year, Geyer announced that he and his wife would be expecting their first child together.

Fans have already begun speculating what his storylines may be, with some expecting a tie to Geyer's personal musical background. One user on X wrote, "I don't think he will be a main character I think he will be connected to Trina and Gio music stuff since the actor background is in music."

Viewers will have to stay tuned to see how this plays out.

Sometimes a band's biggest hit is the song nobody ever expected to be a success in the first place. When Marty Balin first wrote "Miracles," for example, the other members of Jefferson Starship weren't huge fans of the tune...but it went on to become the band's highest charting single, even outperforming their most popular tunes as Jefferson Airplane. (They would have even more success on the charts in the future as Starship, but that's another story.)

Released as a single from Jefferson Starship's 1975 album Red Octopus, "Miracles" peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. At first listen, it sounds pretty much like a straightforward love song:

Love is a magic word, ooh, yeah (Baby)
Few ever find in a lifetime
But from that very first look in your eyes
I knew you and I had but one heart (Baby)

But as Balin told Songwriter Universe in 2018, the song was partly inspired by an Indian guru known as a miracle worker.

"I had heard this Indian chanting and singing, and I found out it was this avatar called Sathya Sai Baba from India," Balin said.

"So I got involved in reading about him, listening to his tapes of his singing," he continued. "I was playing guitar one day, and I thought of him. And then I was reading Persian poetry and the way they talked about God, but they [were also talking] about a woman. They were talking about God when you caress a woman…they were caressing God’s holiness or something. And I just loved that idea. So I kind of wrote that song, having the avatar in mind, and the idea of speaking to a woman, but speaking to a God actually."

Unfortunately, the rest of the band was less than enthusiastic when they heard "Miracles" for the first time.

"Everybody went, 'I don't know about that. That's pretty weird, man,'" Balin was quoted as saying in the book Got a Revolution!: The Turbulent Flight of Jefferson Airplane.

"I was really worried; nobody liked it," Balin added. "But I told myself, after about five days, 'Maybe they're wrong.'"

Of course, Balin turned out to be right. The success of "Miracles" helped make Red Octopus Jefferson Starship/Airplane's only #1 album: It landed at the top of the Billboard Hot 200 on September 6, 1975, where it stayed for four weeks.

And even if Grace Slick never really came around to loving "Miracles," she would end up hating Starship's three #1 hits — "Sara," "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" and "We Built This City" — even more.

“I thought they were ridiculous,” she told The Guardian in 2025. “There isn’t a city built on rock and roll! Los Angeles was built on oil and oranges and the movie business...stupid song. But our producer said, ‘Yeah, but it’s a hit.’ And he was right.”

Keke Palmer is offering fans an inside look at her California home, inspired by classic sitcoms, including one set in California. The actress’s traditional ranch home was the main subject for Architectural Digest.

“My house is kind of like Full House,” Palmer told AD, adding, “except instead of three uncles, we’ve got three aunts.” Palmer is one of four siblings, and along with being an aunt to her nieces and nephews, the actress shares a three-year-old son, Leodis, with her ex Darius Jackson. Her son, whom she welcomed in 2023, made frequent cameos in her AD house tour video.

Palmer’s house not only draws parallels with family-friendly sitcoms because of her loving relatives, but its physical aspects also evoke a sense of soul, belonging, and classic Hollywood living. 

“I love multi-cam sitcoms so much that I think that’s what attracted me to this house,” Palmer says to AD, pointing to specific areas in her home, including the wide bay windows in her home that welcome tons of natural light, and her cozy clad fireplace in the living room.

On the other hand, Palmer's bathroom is her take on an elevated boudoir, featuring a couch, a walk-in shower, ample closet space for her wardrobe, and a number of drawers for organizing her hair accessories.
