James Patterson Presents $15,000 Prize to Debut Author as ‘Gem of a Novel’ Wins Inaugural Award
James Patterson announced the winner of his first-ever James Patterson and Bookshop.org Prize, presenting the award to Virginia Evans for The Correspondent.
“Congratulations to Virginia Evans on winning our James Patterson + Bookshop.org prize for 2025 debut novelists,” the Judge Stone author, 79, wrote via Instagram on Monday, April 6. “I may have broke the news, but you have the support of the indie booksellers to thank!”
Patterson relayed the news to Evans in a video call, which he posted alongside the announcement.
“We got together with Bookshop.org and went out to a lot of indies, which we always try to do to keep indies involved and get people more aware of books and all that good stuff, and they [looked at] a couple hundred books in terms of people saying what they loved, what the booksellers loved, and then came down to five or so … really, really, really good books,” Patterson told Evans. “So, you’re the winner. Yay!”
Evans—whose debut novel has been on the New York Times bestsellers list for 22 weeks following its April 2025 release—expressed her gratitude to Patterson for the honor, responding, “Well, thank you! That’s so exciting.”
Patterson and Bookshop.org teamed up to offer a new literary prize celebrating debut authors who were hand-selected by booksellers at independent bookstores. The award honors outstanding full-length debut books published in the United States within the past 12 months, with all nominations and selections made by indie booksellers who represent readers in local communities. The grand prize winner receives $15,000, while the runner-up gets $10,000.
“I’ve been a longtime supporter of indie bookstores—and emerging authors. Creating this award that recognizes both the booksellers that are getting books into the hands of readers and of course, the books themselves, was a no-brainer to me,” Patterson said on Bookshop.org’s website, calling independent booksellers “the real experts.”
In addition to The Correspondent, the longlist for the prize included The Hollow Half by Sarah Aziza, When the Tides Held the Moon by Venessa Vida Kelley, Aftertaste by Daria Lavelle, It’s Different This Time by Joss Richard, The Nature of Pain by Mandi Fugate Sheffel, My Oceans by Christina Rivera, The Slip by Lucas Schaefer, My Mother’s Boyfriends by Samantha Schoech and The Lilac People by Milo Todd.
“Filled with knowledge that only comes from a life fully lived, The Correspondent is a gem of a novel about the power of finding solace in literature and connection with people we might never meet in person,” a blurb on the Bookshop.org website reads. “It is about the hubris of youth and the wisdom of old age, and the mistakes and acts of kindness that occur during a lifetime.”
Todd’s The Lilac People was named the runner-up in the competition. The novel is described as “a moving and deeply humane story about a trans man who must relinquish the freedoms of prewar Berlin to survive first the Nazis then the Allies, all while protecting the ones he loves.”
Astronaut Kellie Gerardi Isn’t on the Artemis II, but the New Mom Is Over the Moon
While all eyes are on the crew of the Artemis II, another astronaut quietly made some news of her own. While she didn’t go into lunar orbit, Kellie Gerardi did complete a pretty miraculous mission of her own. The women-in-STEM advocate, researcher, and payload specialist welcomed her second baby!
The astronaut is the 90th woman in world history to go into space and one of the first researchers to fly on a commercial spacecraft. Specializing in biomedical and thermodynamic fluid research, this modern mommy is also the Director of Human Spaceflight at the International Institute for Astronautical Sciences (IIAS). As if that’s not impressive enough. Gerardi also has her own Barbie doll. And no, we don’t mean she owns a doll—she is a Barbie.
As her colleagues blasted off on their own adventure to the moon, Gerardi was back here on Earth, giving birth to her second child. In a heartfelt Instagram post, the new second-time mama wrote, “The past 48 hours have been a blur of the best kind and yesterday was spent soaking in the fact that she’s really here.” Gerardi continued, opening up about the rough road to pregnancy, “I'm forever grateful we didn’t hit the brakes too soon on this IVF journey to complet out family. I’m still in pain and am mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and physically exhausted to my core, and I’m so grateful for all of it.”
View this post on InstagramAlong with the sweet statement, Gerardi posted a hospital pic with the words, “She’s here and she’s perfect and I would choose every injection & every moment of the 8 year journey to get to her a million times over for even the chance of living this moment” on top of the photo.
One day later, the astronaut shared her kiddo’s name in an adorable Instagram post, captioned, “Mission Success, and Space Baby has a name. So grateful to officially introduce you to our sweet girl, Maxine Quinn. Welcome to the world, Max Q! You’re going to love it here.”
View this post on InstagramWhy Max Q? This name has a serious scientific meaning. Max Q, or maximum dynamic pressure, is the point at which the aerodynamic stress on a rocket is at its highest. This isn’t the first time Gerardi chose a space travel-themed name for her child. She’s also mom to Delta Victoria (born in 2017). According to NASA, Delta-V is the change in a spacecraft's velocity caused by expelling mass (propellant/fuel).
Even though she’s not orbiting the moon, we’re pretty sure this new mama is “over the moon" about her new kiddo.
Halle Bailey Speaks Out on Backlash Over 'The Little Mermaid' Casting
Three years after her starring role as Ariel in the live-action adaptation of Disney's The Little Mermaid, Halle Bailey is reflecting on her experience with online hate.
Immediately following Bailey's casting, internet forums erupted into outrage over a Black woman portraying the red-haired princess. In an interview with TheIndependent, Bailey opened up about the ordeal, admitting that despite the persistent backlash, she does not regret the role.
Bailey described The Little Mermaid as "a beautiful experience for me—and I feel like it taught me to listen to myself and the good voices inside. I learnt how to block out the noise.” The "noise" refers to the onslaught of racist remarks made against her during the film's promotional period, including the viral #NotMyAriel hashtag.

Following her award-winning role, Bailey admitted that she views the situation as a catalyst for personal growth, using the experience to free herself from the weight of outside opinions.
“It was actually freeing to be in the middle of this conversation where so many different opinions were coming in, and they were so opposite from one another… I felt like I was watching myself inside a cup, seeing how people react to it… Growing up in the industry can really develop your sense of self, and for me, it keeps me grounded in a way. I know for some people it’s the opposite but I just always think to myself, ‘None of this is real,’” said Bailey.
Today, Bailey is preparing for the release of her upcoming romantic comedy, You, Me & Tuscany. The film stars Bailey and Bridgeton standout Regé-Jean Page, marking her first feature role since the birth of her son, Halo.
Bailey noted that her upcoming role as Anna feels like a step into womanhood, emphasizing how much her perspective has shifted. "This feels like the first time where I’m stepping into my womanhood. It felt cool because it reflected me now. You know, I have a baby. I do feel like I’m an official adult woman.”
You, Me & Tuscany is slated for theatrical release this Friday, April 10, 2026.

1964 Career-Defining Classic Was a No. 1 Hit 62 Years Ago Today
In 1964, Johnny Cash released a song that would stand out as one of the most unique hits of his career.
His track, "Understand Your Man," climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart, becoming one of his signature songs during a pivotal era in country music. More than six decades later, it remains a defining example of Cash's storytelling style.
Written by Cash himself, the song is notable for its spoken-word delivery and minimalist arrangement, setting it apart from more traditional country hits of the time. The lyrics center on a man walking away from a relationship, offering a blunt and emotionally distant perspective that was both striking and memorable.
The track also marked an interesting connection to folk legend Bob Dylan, as its melody was inspired by Dylan's "Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right."
Cash and Dylan had already struck up a friendship based on mutual admiration for one another. "I had a portable record player that I’d take along on the road, and I'd put on [The] Freewheelin' backstage, then go out and do my show, then listen again as soon as I came off," Cash wrote in his book, Cash: The Autobiography."After a while at that, I wrote Bob a letter telling him how much of a fan I was. He wrote back almost immediately, saying he'd been following my music since 'I Walk the Line,' and so we began a correspondence."
When Cash was in the middle of writing "Understand Your Man," he drew a blank when it came to the melody.
"He called Dylan and said, 'Hey, do you mind if I use the melody of yours from 'Don't Think Twice' for a song I'm writing? I just can’t seem to come up with one?'" shared Cash's daughter, Cindy. "Dylan said, 'I don’t give a shit'… this story was told to me word for word by my dad one day when I was singing 'Don’t Think Twice…' in the kitchen and asked him why I always went into the words to 'Understand Your Man' every time I sang it."
"Understand Your Man" arrived during a prolific period for Cash, when he was consistently producing hits and building a reputation as one of the most influential voices in American music. His ability to merge country, folk and rock elements contributed to his broad appeal across audiences.
"I can't put myself in a box or a basket when I'm working," Cash told TIME. "I'm really trying to prove that there aren't categories you have to stay in, that you can branch out. You can touch others out there that have not been listening to you if you keep trying."
More than 60 years later, the song continues to resonate as a career-defining classic—one that highlights Johnny Cash’s unmistakable voice and his ability to tell a story in a way few artists could match.

67 Years Ago Today, '30s Icon Won His First Best Actor Award at the Oscars and Made History
Sixty-seven years ago, British screen legend David Niven etched his name into Hollywood history when he won his first and only Academy Award for Best Actor.
The victory, earned for his role in Separate Tables (1958), was not just a personal milestone but a rare moment that still stands unmatched in Oscars history.
Niven’s win at the 1959 Academy Awards became historic for a remarkable reason: he was also serving as a co-host of the ceremony that same night. To this day, he remains the only actor to win an Oscar while hosting the event, a feat that has never been repeated.
His performance in Separate Tables was also unique for another reason. Appearing on screen for just over 23 minutes, Niven delivered the shortest leading performance ever to win Best Actor, proving that impact matters more than screen time.
Niven’s portrayal of Major David Angus Pollock in Separate Tables showcased his range as an actor. Known for his charm and elegance, he stepped into a more dramatic role, earning praise from critics and award bodies alike.
That same year, he also won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama and received recognition from the New York Film Critics Circle. These honors confirmed his performance as one of the most powerful of his career.
Despite a long and successful career in film, this would be Niven’s only Academy Award win and his only nomination in the category. Yet the singular achievement only added to its significance.
Before his Oscar triumph, Niven had already built a strong reputation in Hollywood. He starred in major films such as Wuthering Heights (1939), The Bishop’s Wife (1947), and Around the World in 80 Days (1956), the latter winning Best Picture.
Born James David Graham Niven in London in 1910, he lived a life as fascinating off-screen as it was on-screen. Before becoming a Hollywood star, Niven served in the British Army and even returned to active duty during World War II, becoming one of the few major actors to do so.
He rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel and took part in key operations, including the D-Day landings in 1944. His wartime service earned him the U.S. Legion of Merit, adding to his already remarkable life story.
After the war, Niven returned to acting and regained his place in Hollywood with a string of successful films. By the 1950s, he had become a leading man known for his wit, charm and unmistakable presence.
Beyond acting, he was also a bestselling author. His memoirs, including The Moon’s a Balloon, sold millions of copies and gave fans a glimpse into his colorful life in Hollywood’s Golden Age.Though Niven passed away in 1983 at the age of 73, his legacy continues to endure. Decades later, film fans still celebrate his work, from his dramatic turn in Separate Tables to his iconic roles in The Pink Panther and The Guns of Navarone.

Nancy Guthrie Update: Retired FBI Agent Calls Out 'Red Flags' in New Note & Bitcoin Demand (Exclusive)
Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie‘s mom, Nancy Guthrie, is still missing more than two months after the abduction from her Tucson, Ariz., home—and retired FBI agent Jason Pack recently called out "red flags" in a new note and Bitcoin demand.
On Monday, April 6, TMZ received new correspondence from a person who allegedly saw Nancy alive in Sonora, Mexico. They claimed, however, that the 84-year-old "is dead" now.
The letter was from the same person who sent ransom notes to the outlet in February, TMZ reported. This time, though, the person demanded 1 Bitcoin in exchange for information about the location of Nancy's body. They asked for half before the information was shared and half after a public arrest.
Pack, a retired FBI supervisory special agent, weighed in on the legitimacy of the note and Bitcoin demand—which surfaced on the same day that Guthrie finally returned to her Today co-hosting duties after her mother went missing.
"The timing is the first red flag," he told Parade. "These notes resurface the same morning Savannah Guthrie walks back on television. Real witnesses don’t track the news cycle. Opportunists do."
Additionally, the former FBI agent pointed out, "The letters contradict themselves. The sender claims to have seen Nancy alive in Sonora, Mexico, but also says she is dead. How do they know? Need more specifics…not the contradicting bits of generic statements."
View this post on InstagramRelated: Nancy Guthrie Update: New Details Emerge on Desert Surrounding Her Home
Pack also noted that the FBI has had the tipster's information since February but did not acknowledge or pay the ransom demands. "The Bureau does not ignore actionable intelligence out of stubbornness," he insisted. "Their silence is an answer."
Still, Pack noted that Sonora borders Arizona, and Tucson is roughly 70 miles from the border. "The geography is not impossible," he said. "And the FBI’s Legal Attache in Mexico has the tools to run it down without paying a Bitcoin."
Ultimately, Pack pointed to the method of the new note and Bitcoin demand as a major red flag.
"The fact that they are sending letters to TMZ instead of calling the FBI tells you everything you need to know about their credibility," he explained. "Real witnesses call law enforcement. Scammers call the media."
Nancy was last seen at her Catalina Foothills residence on the evening of Jan 31. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department launched its search for Nancy on Feb. 1, with the FBI joining the investigation not long afterward. As of writing, no suspect has been named in the case, despite Savannah offering a $1 million reward.

Best-Selling Author’s Novel Ranked ‘Best Dark Book Ever’ on Goodreads
Few novels have sparked as much discussion and divided readers as Captive in the Dark.
The bestselling book by C.J. Roberts has been ranked the "best dark book ever" on Goodreads, based on reader votes. The distinction reflects its strong following within the dark romance genre, where emotionally intense and boundary-pushing stories have gained a dedicated audience.
Originally published in 2011, Captive in the Dark follows a young woman who is abducted and thrust into a disturbing and complex relationship with her captor. As the story unfolds, it explores themes of control, survival and psychological tension, challenging readers with its raw and often unsettling subject matter.
"I've always been fascinated by villains," Roberts said in an interview. "Perhaps it has to do with my dark sense of humor, or the fact I like to analyze people, but I've always been drawn to characters I’m not supposed to like. I want to know WHY! Why do people do the things they do and is there any part of them I identify with?"

♬ Play with Fire (feat. Yacht Money) - Sam TinneszThe novel is known for its gripping, fast-paced narrative and its willingness to push beyond traditional romance conventions. Rather than offering a straightforward love story, it delves into darker emotional territory, examining the blurred lines between power and vulnerability.
"I felt free to explore the subject matter without flinching," said Roberts. "It was my way of taking an innate fear that ALL WOMEN have and turning it into something I could wrap my head around."
Over time, the book has become a defining title within the dark romance genre, helping to introduce many readers to a style of storytelling that is both provocative and deeply immersive. In 2024, Roberts released an updated revised and expanded special edition of the book, which includes seven additional bonus scenes.
Its ranking on Goodreads underscores just how influential, and polarizing, it remains. For some readers, it's a standout example of bold, unconventional storytelling; for others, it's a book that challenges comfort zones in unexpected ways.
Either way, Captive in the Dark continues to generate conversation, proving that even the most controversial stories can leave a lasting mark on readers.

Sarah Joy Brown Celebrates 30 Years Since Her 'General Hospital' Debut
April 5th marked the 30th anniversary of Sarah Joy Brown’s debut as Carly Corinthos on General Hospital. To commemorate the milestone, the Daytime Emmy-winning actress reflected on the moment in a post shared on social media.
In the Instagram post, Brown shared clips from her time as Carly and wrote,“Thirty years ago—just after April Fool’s Day—a firecracker named Carly exploded onto the scene in Port Charles… for better or worse. Was it really that dramatic? Maybe not. But for the sake of memory, let’s say absolutely yes.”
Brown also reflected on the early support she received from fans, explaining how it shaped her understanding of the show’s audience. “Not long after I arrived, a few devoted GH fans took me under their wings. Through them, I began to understand the incredible, multigenerational audience that makes General Hospital what it is—an audience that would soon be judging, cheering, and questioning me from their living rooms most days of the week (sometimes quietly… sometimes not so much).”
She went on to express gratitude for originating the role, writing, “It was a true honor to originate a character who would go on to play such a meaningful role in the legacy of daytime television. And I can honestly say—I had an absolute blast bringing her to life. I'm grateful to every single one of the fans, and the talented co-workers who went on the journey with me. The fans are arguably the most vital piece of the complex puzzle that makes great daytime TV possible.”
Brown concluded her post by thanking several of her former co-stars, “I got so lucky with Maurice, Steve, Jackie and Tony as my anchors 💯”
View this post on Instagram Fans ReactFans took to the comment section to help celebrate the actresses anniversary.
One user wrote, “This was an amazing role for you because it allowed us to see what an incredible actress you really are. There's a lot of ups and downs with a very emotional performance. You didn't just play the part, you were the part ❤️”
A second fan shared, “You were a great addition to the cast with both of your iconic roles. Thank you.”
A third added, “You were my first introduction to general hospital. I lived for Sonny and Carly and I was only like 10 or 11 lol”
General Hospital airs weekdays on ABC and streams weeknights on Hulu.
Country Star Makes History After Hit Song Takes 67 Weeks to Reach No. 1
Justin Moore just made country music chart history.
The country star's 2024 song "Time's Ticking" finally reached No. 1 on Billboard's Country Airplay chart dated the week of April 11, marking the longest ascent any song has ever had in the chart's history.
As reported by Billboard on April 3, "Time's Ticking" took a whopping 67 weeks to hit No. 1, after first debuting at #59 on the Country Airplay chart all the way back in December 2024. It now holds the record for the longest climb, which was previously held by Travis Denning's "After a Few" and Michael Ray's "Whiskey and Rain," which both took 65 weeks to reach the summit.
Moore's "Time's Ticking" has also spent 6 weeks on the Hot 100, peaking at #71 back in February. It also had a 21-week stay on the Hot Country Songs chart, peaking at #21 November 2025.

But Moore's "Time's Ticking" isn't the only song to take its sweet time rising on the Country Airplay chart, as 15 other songs have also had a similar trajectory.

Veteran Hollywood icon Billy Dee Williams has reached a remarkable milestone, turning 89 on Monday.
Born William December Williams Jr. in New York City, the actor, whose unique middle name “December” inspired his nickname “Dee,” has built a career spanning more than six decades.
Known for his charm, smooth voice and commanding presence, Williams has appeared in over 100 film and television roles, becoming one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood history.
Williams’ journey began early. Raised in Harlem, he made his Broadway debut as a child in the 1945 musical The Firebrand of Florence. Although acting became his path to success, his first love was painting. He studied art seriously and even took acting jobs just to afford supplies, a passion he continues to pursue today, with works displayed in galleries and even owned by the Smithsonian.

His big break came in 1971 with the emotional television film Brian’s Song, where he portrayed football star Gale Sayers. The performance earned him an Emmy nomination and made him a household name.
In the 1970s, he became a leading man in major films, including Lady Sings the Blues and Mahogany, starring alongside Diana Ross. His on-screen charisma earned him the nickname “Black Clark Gable.”
Williams’ legacy reached global heights when he joined the Star Wars franchise as Lando Calrissian. First appearing in The Empire Strikes Back, he became the first Black actor with a major role in the series. He later reprised the role in Return of the Jedi and again decades later in The Rise of Skywalker.
While many know him for his film work, Williams has always seen himself as more than an actor. He is also an accomplished painter, with works selling for tens of thousands of dollars. His art blends realism with abstract ideas, which he describes as “abstract reality,” per The Luminal Theater.
In addition to painting, Williams is also a novelist and author. In 2024, he released his memoir, offering a deeper look into his life, career, and philosophy. He once described his outlook by saying he sees life in a “full spectrum of colors,” reflecting his artistic mindset.
From playing Harvey Dent in Batman to appearing in popular TV shows and commercials, Williams has shown remarkable versatility.
Despite his fame, he has remained grounded. He has often said he does not take himself too seriously, even with his reputation as a Hollywood heartthrob. As of 2026, Williams continues to attend fan events and conventions, connecting with audiences who grew up watching him.
Today, as he celebrates his 89th birthday, fans around the world are honoring not just an actor, but a true artist whose work has shaped film and culture for decades.

1962 Hit Ranked Among ‘Greatest Songs of All Time’ Became a Breakup Anthem
Some breakup songs are so powerful they persevere for decades.
In 2024, Rolling Stone ranked the 500 best songs of all time, compiling a list of some of the greatest musical works ever created. Alongside iconic hits like Carly Simon's 1972 song "You're So Vain" at No. 496 and Bon Jovi's 1986 song "Livin' on a Prayer" at No. 457, Roy Orbison's 1962 classic "Crying" secured the No. 461 spot.
Released as a single and later featured on his third studio album of the same name, "Crying" became a massive success. Upon release, the track climbed up the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at the No. 2 spot. It also topped the Cash Box chart, a rival publication to Billboard at the time.

The track's widespread popularity helped solidify Orbison's standing as a major rock and roll figure in the 1960s. In 2002, "Crying" received a Grammy Hall of Fame Award, honoring the song's lasting influence on the music industry.
Produced by Fred Foster via Monument Records, the track is recognizable for its distinct rock-bolero rhythm. The song blends Orbison's soaring vocals, lush orchestration and elements of traditional rock to create a vibrant, operatic production. The sonic features of the track highlight the emotive, melodramatic themes explored in the lyricism.
Co-written by Orbison and his songwriting partner Joe Melson, "Crying" was inspired by a chance encounter Orbison had with an ex-lover. The song explores the profound grief one experiences after unexpectedly seeing a past partner. Orbison and Melson dive into the painful realization that a person might not be as over an ex as they initially believed.
Due to its poignant themes and emotional production, "Crying" became a definite breakup anthem of the era. Despite being released 64 years ago, the song continues to resonate with modern audiences in the streaming era. On Spotify, the song has garnered over 76 million streams, attesting to the track's longstanding legacy as a classic 1960s masterpiece.

Olivia Munn Claims Alec Baldwin Got Her Fired From ‘30 Rock’ for One Simple Reason
Olivia Munn is opening up about how she almost ended up with a big role on 30 Rock.
The Your Friends and Neighbors star, 45, who is married to John Mulaney, went in for the role of Avery Jessup on 30 Rock. For those who need a refresher on the iconic Tina Fey-led comedy series, Jessup is a financial reporter for CNBC who ends up married to (and divorced from) Jack Donaghy, played by Alec Baldwin. But Munn claims that while she originally landed the gig, Baldwin had her cut before she could start for one simple reason.
“These people, iconic people — Tina Fey, Robert Carlock, Grace Wu at NBC casting — they all thought that I was good enough to have gotten the offer,” Munn shared on The Hollywood Reporter's podcast I’m Having an Episode podcast. “That’s what I needed. Whether or not I got the job didn’t affect my confidence.”
Knowing that the role "would have been such a big, big break for me," Munn was thrilled. However, she soon discovered that she had been cut from the role.
"The end of that story is that I got the job … and then two days later, they were like, 'Alec [Baldwin] thinks that you look too young to play his love interest.' Another two days later, 'No, no, no. They think you’re perfect. You’re going to fly out on Saturday.' On Friday, 'No, no, no. Alec thinks that you look too young and he’s putting his foot down.' Then Elizabeth Banks got that role," Munn shared.
Banks scored the role and ultimately knocked it out of the park.
Munn Said She Wasn't DevastatedDespite not getting the role, Munn made it clear in the interview that she wasn't devastated over the loss. Instead, she was proud of how far she had come.
"But I was not devastated. I only thought to myself, 'Wow, look how far I got.' I ended up not getting the job because of something I couldn’t control. On my ability and my acting, I got it. It gave me so much confidence," she continued.
Munn went on to show her acting stripes in a variety of other roles, including Aaron Sorkin's HBO series The Newsroom. She even managed to show off her ability to speak fluent Japanese!

This 1954 Film Ranked as Alfred Hitchcock's No. 1 'Masterpiece'
Considered one of the most influential figures in cinema, Alfred Hitchcock has been a master of creating on-screen suspense and thriller storylines. Among his over 50 works, only one was ranked as having been his "masterpiece" and best spanning his career.
Entertainment Weekly looked back at all of Hitchcock’s works to decide which films are considered flops and which ones have been hailed as enduring classics, highlighting the director’s remarkable range—from overlooked releases to the masterpieces that helped define modern suspense.
The Top 5 ranking includes some well-known titles like the 1951 film Stranger on a Train, Vertigo from 1958, Notorious from 1946, and the infamous thriller Psycho from 1960 starring Anthony Perkins. Only one film came in at No. 1 on the list as having been the director's shining best, with it being the 1954 classic Rear Window.
According to the outlet, the ranking is based on the film’s storyline that “interrogates our obsession with observing the lives of others.” Hitchcock gives audiences a deep dive and “careful attention” into the lives and actions of each watched individual, while portraying that neither the main character nor the audience is innocent of voyeurism, forcing viewers to confront their own complicity in watching from a distance.

The mystery thriller was originally based on Cornell Woolrich's 1942 short story "It Had to Be Murder" and starred movie legend James Stewart, Grace Kelly, Wendell Corey, Thelma Ritter, and Raymond Burr. It focuses on a newspaper photographer recovering from a leg fracture in his New York apartment. Riddled with boredom, he begins to watch his neighbors and believes he witnesses a murder. He decided to solve the crime himself and catch the killer.
Rear Window is undoubtedly considered one of Hitchcock's greatest works and was nominated for four Oscars, with it also being preserved in the Library of Congress. It earned a staggering $37.9 million at the box office versus its $1 million budget, and ranked on various lists as one of the best movies of all time.
It's become an inspiration, having been remade into a TV movie of the same name in 1998 with Christopher Reeve. Shia LaBeouf's Disturbia is also based on the storyline; SAW also took inspiration from its 2004 installment, and even Taylor Swift used it for her "Me" music video. TV series like Castle, Pretty Little Liars, The Simpsons, CSI: NY, and many more have used it as source material.

This Wine Cork Trick Is Going Viral Online—but Does It Actually Work?
I know we’ve all been there—you’ve got something covered and simmering on the stove, or even worse, you just pulled a pan out of the oven. You reach for the handle without thinking… and about three seconds later, you’re reminded that it was just sitting at 375 degrees for the last 30 minutes. It’s one of those kitchen mistakes you only need to make once to remember, but somehow, we all still do it.
So when I came across this simple wine cork trick, I immediately thought: this is actually kind of genius. The idea is that it acts as a visual (and physical) reminder that your pot lid or handle is hot—something you can quickly grab without burning your fingers. And as someone who enjoys a glass of wine or champagne from time to time, I also love the idea of giving a cork a second life instead of tossing it straight into the trash.
I’m always dialed into Los Angeles-based creator Sidney Raskind (aka @sidneyraz), whose “Things I Didn’t Know Until I Was in My 30s” series on TikTok and Instagram is full of those oddly brilliant "why-didn’t-I-think-of-that" moments. I’ve picked up a handful of useful tips from him over time, so when I saw this one, I knew I had to test it out for myself and see if it actually holds up.

How To Use a Wine Cork as a Heat-Resistant Handle ExtensionIn his short video, Sidney shows how to use a wine cork to minimize burning your hands on a hot pot lid. The idea is simple: wedge the cork into the handle of a lid or pan so it creates a small buffer between your hand and the hot handle.
From the quick 17-second clip, it looks like he’s using a larger, more expanded cork, likely from a champagne or sparkling wine bottle which gives a bit more surface area and grip.

@sidneyrazi didn’t expext this to work at all #tipsandtricks #todayilearned #lifehack #cookinghacks #cookingtips
♬ original sound - sidneyrazWhen I tested this myself, I didn’t have an exact match. Instead, I used a red wine cork and a sparkling Italian wine cork I had on hand. I tried fitting them into a few different pot lids and pans around my kitchen to see how secure they felt and whether they actually made a difference when handling heat.
Courtesy Jeanette Donnarumma
What I found is that the concept does work, but it’s definitely dependent on the type of cork and the shape of your cookware. Some combinations felt stable and helpful, while others were a little too loose to trust.
The red wine cork was loose on all the pot handles I had on hand, whereas the end of the sparkling wine cork was a good fit, but the other half of it was too small. And in trying them both, when I lifted the pan, it tilted to the side and then my hand was a bit burned by the steam from the water.

4 Tips for Using a Cork To Prevent BurnsHere's what I learned while trying out this kitchen hack.
1. Use a larger, expanded corkCourtesy Jeanette Donnarumma
The bigger the cork, the better this trick works. Champagne or sparkling wine corks tend to have that wider, mushroom-like top, which gives you more surface area to grip and a better buffer from the heat. An older sparkling wine cork would really do the trick for this. The smaller corks I tested didn’t feel quite as secure.

2. Choose pots with shorter handlesThis trick worked best on pots where the handle sits closer to the lid or pan. When the handle is more compact, the cork fits more snugly and feels more stable. Longer, thinner handles made it harder to wedge the cork in a way that felt reliable. I didn't own any that this worked super well for.

3. Test the fit before you need itCourtesy Jeanette Donnarumma
This is not something you want to try for the first time when a pan is already hot. Test your cork placement on a cool pot first to make sure it fits securely and won’t slip when you go to grab it.
4. Don’t rely on it completelyWhile it can help as a reminder and light buffer, it’s not a full heat-proof solution. Think of it as an extra layer of awareness, a kitchen towel near the pot will do the same trick.

Final Thoughts: Is This Wine Cork Trick Worth Trying?I love Sidney’s series and I’ll absolutely give this one an A+ for creativity. But in terms of execution, it’s probably more of a C-.
It works in certain situations, especially if you have the right type of cork and cookware, but it’s not foolproof. For me, it felt more like a helpful visual reminder than a true heat-protection solution.
I’ll probably hang onto a larger sparkling wine cork and let it expand a bit more to test again down the line, but for now, I think keeping a kitchen towel nearby still does the job just as well (if not better).
If you’re someone who loves a clever kitchen hack and already has corks lying around, it’s a fun one to try, just be careful.

7 Habits of Highly Empathetic People Who Easily Get Drained in Crowds
Concerts, grocery stores, theme parks, family gatherings, parties, tourist attractions, the mall, sports games: those are some settings where you may find yourself in a crowd, regardless of whether you want to be or not. While large groups of people can be exciting—especially at fun events where you can feed off the overall energy—they can also be draining.
For what it’s worth, feeling that way during or after being in a crowd makes sense. Having to squeeze through a bunch of strangers, avoiding losing the people you came with and waiting in long lines can be a lot to handle on an emotional, mental and physical level. It can be especially rough for highly empathetic people. A psychologist explains more below, but essentially, that’s because they're taking in an overwhelming amount of information and stimulation. Sound familiar? They also often feel a need to recharge after (and the psychologist has tips on that, too).
In other words, if you’re someone who feels drained by crowds but refuses to miss out on the opportunities where those are present, don’t fear. Ahead, a psychologist shares what types of people feel drained in crowds, seven habits of highly empathetic people who understand that feeling well and how to reclaim that energy so you can avoid a major case of FOMO.
What Types of People Feel Drained in Crowds? While any “type” of person can feel drained in a crowd, people who typically experience this “feel everything a bit more deeply than most,” according to Dr. Golee Abrishami, PhD, a psychologist and the Vice President of Clinical Care at Octave. These individuals may be introverts, highly sensitive people and/or just people with higher levels of empathy.
“For these individuals, a busy room or space isn’t just loud or stimulating; it’s an emotional experience that requires mental and physical energy to navigate,” she explains. They “tend to absorb the emotional energy of the world around them, often without realizing it.”
7 Habits of Highly Empathetic People Who Easily Get Drained in Crowds, According to a PsychologistIf you’re a highly empathetic person who gets easily drained in large gatherings of people, you might have the following seven habits.
Tom Werner/Getty Images
1. They absorb other people’s energyThese individuals notice how others are feeling, and they take it a step further: they feel the emotion, too.
“They may walk past someone who is anxious or upset, and they will notice it and pick up the feeling themselves,” Dr. Abrishami explains.
That can happen with multiple people, by the way.
“In a crowd, that can mean absorbing the emotional load of dozens of people at once,” she adds.
2. They're constantly reading the roomHighly empathetic people can’t help but be highly attuned to body language, facial expressions and unspoken dynamics—and that can go into overdrive.
“It can be very exhausting for them because they're constantly experiencing everyone around them without a break,” Dr. Abrishami shares.
3. They find small talk draining and effortfulHungry for depth and “real” conversations, highly empathetic people want more than surface-level conversation.
“They’re the people who may ask a question that seems too personal because they want to cut through the shallow talk and get deep,” Dr. Abrishami says.
As you can probably guess, that can be harder in crowds, however, due to a lack of privacy and loud noises. That’s also what makes crowds draining, according to Dr. Abrishami.
4. They struggle to “turn off” their awareness of othersFor highly empathetic people, relaxing and enjoying the moment without noticing everyone and everything about them is difficult, which can keep their nervous system alert.
“You can literally see an empathetic person’s eyes scanning the room, looking at what people are going through and assessing everything that’s going on,” Dr. Abrishami states.
Related: Psychologist Says if You Have These 8 Habits, You Are Highly Emotionally Mature
5. They need serious “me” time after being in a crowdSocial gatherings (even those that aren’t as major as concerts) can be draining for highly empathetic people. Afterward, they may need time to process or decompress, perhaps in silence and alone.
“This isn’t about being antisocial,” Dr. Abrishami clarifies. “It’s about making space for yourself to process and get some rest.”
6. They put others in front of themselvesHighly empathetic people don’t often put themselves first.
“That might seem selfless, but it can be very taxing,” Dr. Abrishami says. “If they're in a group, they are the ones who are checking in on everybody else, smoothing over awkward moments and making sure everyone feels included.”
That invisible labor can go unnoticed, even for the empathetic person doing it.
Related: If You Always Feel Like the Family Peacekeeper, Psychologists Say You Might Have These 2 Main Traits
7. They're highly affected by noise and sensory overloadThe physical aspects of a crowd, not just the emotional ones, can be a lot for a highly empathetic person to handle. Loud noises, bright lights and proximity to strangers can all be overwhelming.
“They can get overstimulated easily, but often won’t give themselves a break in the moment, which leads them to collapse after a big event,” Dr. Abrishami explains. “These are the people who go to a concert on a Friday night and spend all of Saturday by themselves.”
How To Reclaim Your EnergyIf those signs sound like you, Dr. Abrishami first encourages you to give yourself the time to recharge. Needing quiet time to restore is a reality and nothing to be ashamed of. It might look like building in recovery time after a social event and/or sticking with and narrowing in on a trusted friend during the event.
Grounding techniques (such as breathing exercises, stepping outside for a moment and focusing on physical sensations) are also helpful, she says, as they regulate your nervous system. You can try the 5-4-3-2-1 skill, which is where you list five things you can see, four things you can feel, three things you can hear, two things you can smell and one thing you can taste.
Last but not least, Dr. Abrishami encourages setting a time limit before entering the stimulating situation.
“Setting a boundary in advance helps you save energy instead of figuring out if you have enough in the energetic tank to make it through the event,” she says.
Related: Therapists Are Begging You To Remember This 1 Thing About Boundaries
Final TakeawaysIn short, highly empathetic people who are always taking in others’ emotions can easily feel drained in crowds. And no wonder: With so many people (and strangers, at that) and so much noise, it makes sense. So while it’s not always fun, don’t get confused: Being highly empathetic is not a bad thing.
“Being highly empathic in a noisy world is not a weakness, even if it feels like one at times,” Dr. Abrishami shares. “You are the ones who make others feel seen and heard, who notice what others miss, and who hold space for people in ways that truly matter.”
She encourages you to protect and restore your precious energy rather than trying to be less sensitive.
“Learning how to balance overstimulation and sensitivity is a superpower,” she states.
