'80s Music Icon Debbie Gibson Is ‘a Modern Day Goddess’ in Swimsuit and Heels
Debbie Gibson's Lifeway Kefir Coachella kick-off event is giving her fans a serious case of FOMO.
The 55-year-old original pop princess just performed at the Palm Springs pool party on Friday, Apr. 11, and the photos she shared after it was over have us falling helplessly in love with her all over again.
The private event was held at a retro-styled home that perfectly fit the '80s vibe that made Gibson famous. She wore a retro mint green swimsuit with a halter tie and ruffles around each leg with Dolce & Gabbana leather printed D'Orsay pumps that feature a peep toe and platform heel.
In the first photo of the fun Instagram share, the "Electric Youth" singer looked ageless as she leaned back in a fuchsia office chair, with one leg up to give a better view of her designer platforms and a bright smile on her face.
The second slide gave a glimpse of her performance, where Gibson stayed in her swimsuit and paired it with a wide-brimmed hat while she sang "Only in My Dreams."
The "Foolish Beat" singer went on to give us a full look at her outfit in the third slide, striking a pose for a mirror selfie in a retro room that featured a black-and-white patterned wall and shaggy grey carpet. The fourth slide was a video view from the top as Gibson floated in a sparkling blue swimming pool inside a pool float as music played in the background.
View this post on InstagramThree more slides took fans back to another performance from the event, as well as another mirror selfie and a photo of the pop star smiling with a backdrop of palm trees and mountains.
Gibson's caption, in part, read, "When wellness , gr8 vibes, and music collide … it’s a perfect day !!! SWIPE for all the FUN ☀️."
Fans quickly filled the comments, with one declaring, "Wow! Totally gorgeous! A modern day goddess!!!! ♥️."
Another wrote, "This looks like my kind of concert 🌴 Looking great 👙."
"What a beautiful day of fun music & celebrating life...way!!! I love my first visit to Palm Springs!!! Thanks Deb!!!" a third commenter shared.
Yet another wished they could be there. They wrote, "What a cool and intimate experience for everyone! I’m feeling FOMO! But hey, you did sing to me at your piano at the Gramercy twice in two nights! 😀 Hope all is well, Deb!"

Best-Selling Author’s Novel Ranked Among ‘Books You Can't Live Without’ on Goodreads
There aren't many love stories have captured readers' hearts quite like The Time Traveler's Wife.
The bestselling novel by Audrey Niffenegger has been ranked among "books you can’t live without" on Goodreads, based on votes from readers. The distinction signifies the novel's lasting emotional impact and its ability to stay with readers long after they've turned the final page.
Originally published in 2003, the story follows Henry, a man with a rare genetic condition that causes him to involuntarily travel through time, and Clare, the woman who loves him. Their relationship unfolds in a nonlinear way, as Henry appears at different moments in Clare’s life, creating a love story shaped by both connection and uncertainty.
"Henry and Clare's situation is not unlike everyone else's; no matter how much we love someone we will all be separated by death eventually," said Niffenegger in a 2013 interview with Dear Author. "A lot of my work, both as a writer and as an artist, is about love and loss and sex and death, so if you look at The Time Traveler's Wife in the context of my other work the ending is pretty inevitable."
Blending romance with elements of science fiction, the novel explores themes of fate, loss and devotion. Its unconventional structure allows readers to experience the couple’s relationship from multiple points in time, adding emotional depth to an already powerful story.
The book became a major success, praised for its originality and emotional resonance, and has remained a favorite among readers for more than two decades.
It was later adapted into the film The Time Traveler’s Wife, starring Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana, bringing the story to an even wider audience.
"The adaptation was obviously a challenge and you know that you're going to be playing someone that people have cast in their head a certain way and how do you meld their idea with yours and the authors and the screenwriters and the director's," McAdams told Collider. "But at a certain point you just have to give over and fall into it. That was a challenge."
With its continued recognition on Goodreads, The Time Travelers Wife stands as a testament to the enduring power of a love story that transcends time—one that many readers truly feel they can’t live without.

‘Euphoria’ Star Finally Addresses Absence From Season 3
After four years, the hit HBO series Euphoria has returned for its third season. With the promotional rollout launching in January, one central character is noticeably missing from reunited cast.
Barbie Ferreira, the actress who portrayed Kat Hernandez initially announced her departure from Euphoria in August 2022. The actress posted an emotional Instagram story to share the news, affirming her appreciation for the character.
Now, as Season 3 gears up for its premiere on Sunday and Ferreira prepares for the release of her latest film projects, she has opened up about her absence. In a recent interview with Deadline, Ferreira addressed her retired role, revealing that a large factor was her desire for creative fulfillment and professional growth.
Alexa Demie, Hunter Schafer, Maude Apatow, Zendaya, Barbie Ferreira and Sydney Sweeney attend the HBO Max FYC event for "Euphoria" at Academy Museum of Motion Pictures on April 20, 2022 in Los Angeles, California.“It just felt like for me, what I wanted to do is act and be able to do different roles, and if Euphoria was going to serve that for me, I would have happily done it forever, however long it would have been,” she said. “But It wasn’t really letting me show my range. In fact, it was kind of diminishing as time went on, and it was like, what makes me happy is acting and growing my career.”
Ferreira continued, “So, it just felt like a very personal decision where I, really deep down, don’t care if what I’m doing is the biggest show of all time, as long as I’m creatively fulfilled. It’s truly all that I care about.”
Ferreira has spoken about her fears of being typecast before. In 2023 she spoke with Dax Shepard on the Armchair Expert podcast, saying that the decision to let go of the role was partly to avoid the "fat best friend" label.
"I don't think there was a place for her to go," Ferreira said. "I think there were places she could have gone. I just don't think it would have fit into the show. I don't know if it was going to do her justice, and I think both parties knew that I really wanted to be able to not be the fat best friend. I don't want to play that, and I think they didn't want that either."
Breaking out of that mold, Ferreira has taken on several new projects, recently starring as Margot in Faces of Death, a horror flick directed by Daniel Goldhaber. Today, she is preparing for the release of her upcoming romantic comedy, Mile End Kicks, which is set for release on April 17.

True-Crime Series Featuring ‘America’s Most Hated Bachelor’ Ranked No. 1 Podcast on Apple
Bachelor Nation’s Clayton Echard is in the spotlight again. But this time, it's because he's the subject of the No. 1 podcast series on Apple, called Love Trapped.
Following his Season 26 run as the Bachelor in 2022, the 32-year-old Missouri native found himself involved in a “paternity nightmare” that spiraled into a months-long legal and media firestorm.
View this post on InstagramThe other party involved is a woman named Laura Owens; she’s the 35-year-old daughter of famous former Bay Area radio personality Ronn Owens. The gist is this: After a one-night stand in May 2023, Laura claimed Clayton got her pregnant with twins, with Clayton denying paternity.
The charges stem from a paternity suit Owens filed in August 2023, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Prosecutors allege the Laura's pregnancy was fabricated so that she could pursue child support and a relationship with Clayton.
When the scandal became public news, no one believed Clayton, because he was, after all, the most hated Bachelor in America after “gaslighting” and “manipulating,” according to fans, the final three women in his reality dating show orbit.
Over the course of 10 episodes, however, host Stephani Young might just change minds, as she investigates the case’s claims of deception, pregnancy fraud, and digital harassment, giving listeners access to original audio recordings, emails, and insights from lawyers, family, and other victims. There’s even a livestream courtroom showdown included.
“At its core, this is a story about who you believe and why,” the iHeart True Crime synopsis reads. “It’s an epic battle that would take a group of strangers, citizen sleuths from across the world, to crack the case and finally hold someone accountable.”
The series just dropped Episode 8, with new episodes released every Thursday. With fans calling it “captivating,” “insane,” and “addictive,” this true-crime deep dive might just be the best thing since The Curious Case of Natalia Grace.

1984 Hit Film Ranked Among ‘Best Movies of All Time’
In 1984, a sci-fi thriller landed in movie theaters that would go on to define a generation of action films.
The Terminator, directed by James Cameron, has been ranked among the best movies of all time by Rotten Tomatoes, underscoring its lasting influence on cinema.
The film follows a relentless cyborg assassin sent back in time to eliminate Sarah Connor, a woman whose unborn son will one day lead humanity in a war against machines. As she is hunted, a soldier from the future arrives to protect her, setting off a high-stakes battle that blends science fiction with intense action.
At the center of the film is Arnold Schwarzenegger, whose portrayal of the nearly unstoppable Terminator became one of the most iconic roles in movie history. His performance, combined with the film's suspenseful pacing and innovative effects, helped elevate the story into something unforgettable.
Despite its relatively modest budget, The Terminator stood out for its ambitious concept and execution, combining elements of horror, action and science fiction in a way that felt fresh and groundbreaking at the time.
"My whole approach to science-fiction is, the more outlandish a story, the more real you have to ground it in how people really talk, and how they really would respond if something like that was really happening to them. That's just my modus operandi," Cameron told EMPIRE.
The film's success launched a major franchise, with multiple sequels and a short-lived television series expanding on its themes of artificial intelligence, fate and survival. It also helped establish Cameron as one of Hollywood's most influential directors.
More than four decades later, The Terminator remains a cultural touchstone, one that continues to influence filmmakers and captivate audiences.
"Terminator was my first film, and it's near and dear for that reason," said Cameron. "But I think I can look at it pretty objectively now as a creature of its time, both in terms of how it sits in the zeitgeist of that moment, and also how it sits in my career as a first effort. I don’t think of it as some holy grail, that's for sure. I look at it now and there's parts of it that are pretty cringeworthy, and parts of it that are like, yeah, we did pretty well for the resources we had available."
With its inclusion on Rotten Tomatoes' list, the film's legacy is once again reaffirmed as one of the most important, quotable, and recognizable movies of all time.

‘Ignored’ 1985 Comedy Is Now Ranked Among the 'Best Movies of All Time'
The 1985 Japanese film, Tampopo, is now considered a comedy masterpiece, with Rotten Tomatoes ranking it as the 66th best film of all time.
However, according to the film's director, the late Juzo Itami, Tampopo didn't make a splash upon its release.
“It only did so-so, and the critics just ignored it,” said Itami during a 1987 interview with the Los Angeles Times.
The screenwriter, who died in 1997 at the age of 64, explained that Tampopo didn't immediately receive acclaim because it was in the shadow of his successful 1984 film, The Funeral.
“When your first film is very successful, I think there’s a tendency for critics to tear down your second one. But the audience is the final judge, and the fact that Tampopo was simply a funny film was not enough to attract present-day Japanese audiences--especially in the winter season. In Japan it was not a must-see film," explained the director during the interview.
He also suggested that the film's premise of perfecting a ramen shop can easily be empathized with, especially for those who lived in Japan during the 1980s.
“We’re all brought up to believe in the importance of fulfilling our parents’ expectations. You’re constantly trying to live up to them--only a 100% fulfillment will do," said Itami to the Los Angeles Times.
Throughout the film, which stars Nobuko Miyamoto, Tsutomu Yamazaki, and Ken Watanabe, Itami mixed humor and nostalgia. In 2017, Criterion released an interview wherein the film's food stylist, Seiko Ogawa, shared that she purposefully used ramen styles of the 1920s to evoke a sense of yesteryear.
"The ramen in the film was already, 30 years ago, an object of nostalgia. In terms of the period, that style originated in the 1910s and 1920s. It's an old style of ramen before the war. I made it with an older style in mind," said Ogawa.
In addition, Ogawa said she was very purposeful with the color of the ramen's broth and the composition of each bowl.
"As for the shape of the bowl, it shouldn't be too large or too small. The sides should open up gracefully. That's how bowls used to be shaped," said the food stylist.
Tampopo currently has a rating of 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
1973 Hit Ranked Among ‘Greatest Songs of All Time’ Became a Timeless Anthem
In 1973, Stevie Wonder released a song that would become one of the most powerful and beloved tracks of his career.
His hit, "Higher Ground" has since been ranked among the greatest songs of all time by Rolling Stone, a testament to its lasting impact on music and culture.
Driven by a distinctive clavinet riff and an infectious groove, "Higher Ground" blends funk and soul with a sense of urgency that set it apart from other songs of its era. Wonder, who wrote, produced and performed much of the instrumentation himself, created a sound that felt both innovative and deeply rooted in rhythm and blues.
Lyrically, the song explores themes of spiritual growth, resilience and self-improvement, reflecting a broader message about rising above challenges. Its layered meaning, combined with its dynamic sound, helped it resonate with listeners on multiple levels.
"Higher Ground" was featured on Wonder's album Innervisions, a record widely considered one of the greatest albums of all time. The song's success further solidified Wonder's reputation as one of the most influential artists of his generation.
However, shortly after Innervisions was recorded, Wonder was in a very serious car accident that nearly took his life.:
"We had just finished Innervisions. The question has always been, 'Did you write 'Higher Ground' because you thought something was going to happen?' We were on our way to North Carolina to do a performance to raise money for a black radio station when the accident happened," Wonder told TODAY in 2004.
"I remember we left, and you're never supposed to leave the scene of an accident. What happened was my brother picked me up, put me in a car and drove the back roads to the highway to get to the hospital. At the hospital, the doctors said that if they hadn’t moved me, I would have died, because help was taking too long to get there."
Over the years, the track has continued to find new audiences, notably through a successful cover by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, which introduced the song to a younger generation.
More than 50 years later, "Higher Ground" remains a staple of classic soul and funk, a timeless anthem that showcases Stevie Wonder at the height of his creative powers and continues to inspire listeners around the world.

1989 Chart-Topping Breakup Anthem Was Rock Icon's Bestselling Single of All Time
It's hard to think of a more iconic, well-respected and generally beloved rock star than Tom Petty. The world is still mourning his unexpected death in 2017 at the age of just 66, but his music is just as popular and relevant as ever. So it might surprise some fans to learn that Petty never actually had a number one hit, though he did have several songs hit the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, including the best-selling single of his storied career: "Free Fallin.'"
The opening track on Petty's debut solo album, 1989's Full Moon Fever, "Free Fallin'" wasn't just Petty's longest-charting song, it was his highest-charting solo track, peaking at #7 in January 1990 (his duet with Stevie Nicks, "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," hit #3 in 1981). Not bad for a song Petty and Jeff Lynne, who would later end up being one of his bandmates in the Traveling Wilburys, reportedly wrote and recorded in just two days.
In an interview from the book Conversations With Tom Petty by Paul Zollo (excerpted by GQ), Petty said "Free Fallin'" was the first song he and Lynne wrote together.
"Jeff came over and I had a little electric keyboard that Bugs [technician and roadie Alan “Bugs” Weidel] had bought. I really gave him hell about buying it. I said, 'Why would you waste money on this? I would never play something like this,'" Petty recalled.
"He said, 'Well, look, take it into the house. If you write one song on it, it will pay for itself,'" he continued. "And I thought, 'Well, OK,' and Jeff was over and I had the little keyboard. And I started playing on it and I hit this riff; this little chord pattern that we would know as 'Free Fallin.' But I had a couple notes more in the riff. And Jeff looked up and said, 'Oh, that’s good. Can you leave out that last chord there and see what it does?'"
"And when I did that, it made this nice round of chords. And so I was just trying really to make Jeff smile as I was ad-libbing these words," Petty revealed.
"You know, 'She’s a good girl / Loves her mama / Loves Jesus and America too.' And Jeff smiled. I kept going. And I got right up to the chorus bit and I didn’t know what to sing, and he said [in a British accent] 'Free Fallin.'' And I tried to sing it, but I couldn’t get 'Free Fallin’' to fit into the line. So I just sang 'Free...' And then in the next line I sang 'Free Fallin.'' And then he perked up and said, 'That’s good. That’s great! But take your voice up an octave when you do it, when you go to the chorus.' And, bang, there it was: 'Free Fallin.'' I was very excited. I loved the song," the singer added.
Of course, the rest of the world ended up loving the song, too (not to mention the music video, which was a mainstay on MTV for years). Whether listeners identified with the "bad boy" singing about leaving his girlfriend or the jilted "good girl" herself, the chorus embodied that universal emotion so many people feel at the end of a relationship.
The enduring popularity of "Free Fallin'" was a huge contributor to the fact that Full Moon Fever ended up being certified five times platinum in 2000 for achieving a total of five million sales since its release. Nearly 40 years later, people are still listening: At the time of this writing, "Free Fallin'" has been streamed 914,104,192 on Spotify alone.

The New ‘Longevity’ Peptide Creams That Are Replacing Traditional Anti-Aging Moisturizers
Parade aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.
If you’ve been paying attention to skincare lately, you may have noticed a subtle shift in how we talk about aging. It’s less about quick fixes and more about long-term goals—supporting the skin so it functions better over time rather than trying to reverse changes overnight. And at the center of that shift is one ingredient category that keeps coming up: peptides.
Unlike more aggressive anti-aging ingredients that focus on exfoliating or speeding up cell turnover, peptide creams take a more supportive approach. They’re designed to help skin maintain its structure, reinforce the barrier and gradually improve firmness and elasticity with consistent use. The appeal is obvious, especially for anyone who has found traditional actives like retinoids too irritating or difficult to stick with long term.
That’s why dermatologists are increasingly recommending peptide-based moisturizers as a foundational step—not just an add-on. They’re easy to layer, generally well tolerated across skin types and work in the background to support collagen production and overall skin health. The result isn’t a dramatic overnight change, but something more sustainable: smoother texture, better hydration and skin that simply looks more resilient over time.
So, are peptide creams actually worth the hype? And how do you know which ones to try? Ahead, dermatologists break down what peptides really do, how to use them and the nine best peptide cream formulas to consider right now.

What Are Peptides? At their most basic, peptides act as the basic ingredients for your body to build proteins like collagen and elastin.
“Peptides are short chains of amino acids that serve as the building blocks of proteins such as collagen and elastin, which give skin its structure, firmness and elasticity,” explains Dr. Hallie McDonald, MD, FAAD, co-founder of ERLY Skincare. “In skincare, peptides act as signaling molecules that help communicate with skin cells, encouraging processes like collagen production, repair and barrier reinforcement.”
Because peptides are smaller than full proteins, they’re able to penetrate the skin more effectively, making them particularly useful in topical formulas.
Dr. Tiffany J. Libby, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist, adds that peptides work by essentially telling your skin what to do next.
“They signal to your cells to produce more collagen and other complex molecules that help support the skin’s structure,” she says.
Related: Dermatologists Warn: These 7 Habits Make Crepey Skin Worse After 50
Do Peptide Creams Actually Work?Short answer: yes—but they work differently than more aggressive anti-aging ingredients.
“Peptide creams absolutely have a role in an effective skincare routine, particularly for those looking for a gentle, consistent approach to anti-aging,” says Dr. McDonald. “Well-formulated peptide products can support collagen production, improve hydration and help soften the appearance of fine lines over time.”
The keyword here is "consistency." Unlike exfoliating acids or retinol—which can produce faster visible changes—peptides tend to deliver more gradual results. But for many people, that’s part of the appeal.
“They provide many of the same supportive benefits for skin quality and firmness without the common side effects,” she adds, which makes them especially useful for those with sensitive skin or anyone who struggles with irritation from stronger actives.

Not all peptides work the same way, and understanding the differences can help you choose a more effective product.
“Signal peptides, such as palmitoyl pentapeptide and tripeptide-1, help stimulate collagen and elastin production,” Dr. McDonald states. “Carrier peptides, including copper peptides, support repair processes, while neurotransmitter-inhibiting peptides can help soften the appearance of expression lines.”
From a dermatology standpoint, signal peptides and copper peptides tend to have the strongest track record for improving firmness and smoothing fine lines over time. Dr. Libby also notes that collagen-supporting peptides become more important as we age, since natural levels decline. That’s why incorporating them into a daily routine can help support the skin’s structure more consistently.
Can You Layer Peptide Creams With Other Products? One of the biggest advantages of peptides is how easy they are to use and combine with other products.
“Peptides are highly versatile and generally layer well with most skincare ingredients,” says Dr. McDonald. They pair particularly well with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and barrier-supporting ingredients like niacinamide.
They can even be used with other anti-aging products.
“Using peptides alongside retinoids can be beneficial, as peptides help support the skin barrier and may reduce irritation,” she explains.
In other words, peptide creams don’t require you to overhaul your routine—they slot in easily, whether you’re keeping things simple or using more active treatments.

Zara Tindall and Daughter Mia, 12, Are Royal Twins in Matching Fashion Moment
Zara Tindall, the eldest granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II, stepped out with her preteen daughter, Mia Tindall, and the pair looked smashing in matching suits.
Zara, 44, and her husband, Mike Tindall, attended the Randox Grand National Festival at Aintree Racecourse with Mia, 12, on April 10. (The couple also shares daughter Lena, born in 2018, and son Lucas, born in 2021.)
The mother-daughter fashion moment stole the show at the equestrian race. Zara sported a pastel pink suit from Me + Em with a Cefinn blouse. She paired the classy ensemble with a matching hat, Hector Lion pearl earrings, and Emmy shoes. Mia seems to be following in her mom’s fashionable footsteps. She wore her own stylish pinstripe powder blue suit, accessorized with a blue headband from Camilla Rose Millinery, silver loafers, and a silver bag.

The Tindall family has frequented horse races for years, as Zara is an Olympic silver medalist in equestrian eventing, having competed in the 2012 London Olympics as part of the Great Britain team. She performed in all three disciplines: dressage, cross-country, and show jumping.

Mia has been photographed hanging out with her cousins, Peter’s daughters, Savannah and Isla, as well as Prince William and Kate Middleton’s three kids, George, Charlotte, and Louis.
The Tindalls definitely bring a lot of fun and energy to royal events. Whether Mia is spotted whispering secrets with Princess Charlotte or making goofy faces with Prince Louis, it’s clear her cousins adore the preteen.

When it comes to parenting, Zara is as down-to-earth as they come. She previously spoke about how she and Mike, 47, are instilling their "values" in their children and the "incredible" journey of motherhood.
"Every day there is a different dilemma or problem, but it is incredible and I do look at myself differently," Zara said during an interview with Bella Magazine in July 2025. "My personality is coming out in the kids and there are some parts that you love and some that you don't like. And obviously some of Mike's as well. There is never a dull moment."

Interestingly enough, the first Coachella was actually held in October and not April. The inaugural festival took place on October 9 and 10, 1999, at the Empire Polo Club in Indio where it still takes place today. Find out more here.
We Asked 3 Child Psychologists What Phrase To Avoid With Kids—They All Said the Same Thing
More and more, parents and grandparents are embracing the power of words with children. It's a long way away—and a welcome departure, if you ask us—from the whole "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me" idea from back in the day.
"The words we choose to encourage our kids are powerful," says Dr. Brittney Pearson, PhD,a licensed psychologist with Thriveworks. "Therefore, we must choose them wisely and with intention. In the short term, our words can provide feedback on a child’s view of their abilities and intelligence. In the long term, these words can set the foundation for a child's identity and self-worth."
Another child psychologist echoes these sentiments.
"Words are important because language becomes internalized in kids," adds Dr. Cheung “William” Tsang, PsyD, a neuropsychologist with Hackensack University Medical Center. "The way a parent speaks to a child eventually becomes how a child talks to themselves."
In fact, you may notice that your inner critic has the same voice as your mom or dad—that's common.
"In the short term, words shape behavior and emotional reactions," Dr. Tsang says. "Over time, they shape self-concept, motivation and how a child responds to successes, challenges and failures."
It's a lot of pressure, and no parent or grandparent gets it right 100% of the time. Child psychologists aren't suggesting anyone strive for perfection (an impossible standard). Yet, knowing the pitfalls of certain common phrases can help you choose wiser words. To that end, three psychologists agree that it's best to avoid this one common phrase with kids, and it might be a surprising one to you.

The #1 Phrase To Avoid With Kids, According to 3 Child PsychologistsYuliia Kaveshnikova/Getty Images
Even though it might be a surprising one—because maybe your parents or teachers told you this growing up and you thought it was motivational—child psychologists don't recommend this phrase for kids: "The phrase 'practice makes perfect'... can have an unintended, potentially harmful impact on a child’s mental well-being," Dr. Pearson says
Unintended is a keyword. She knows parents aren't purposefully causing harm by using this phrase.
"The intention behind the phrase 'practice makes perfect' is well-meaning," she concedes. "Parents might use this phrase to encourage discipline and persistence, especially when they notice their child facing a challenging subject in school or a task."
Still, the consequences can be real and long-lasting.
"In the immediate moment, 'practice makes perfect' sets an impossible standard," Dr. Amy Kincaid Todey, PhD, a child psychologist with Todey Psychology, explains. "Perfection doesn't exist… not in soccer, not in music, not in math, not in relationships, not in life."
Raise your hand if you needed to hear that today. Dr. Tsang doesn't think "practice makes perfect" is inherently harmful on its own, but how it lands matters—and he agrees with Dr. Todey that it can often land in the wrong places.
"If 'perfect' becomes the goal, kids may feel frustrated or discouraged when learning is messy, which it almost always is," he notes. "It can shift attention away from the process and toward the outcome."
When kids believe the goal is perfection, they start avoiding challenges because if you never try the hard thing, you never have to fail at it. Dr. Todey says kids may start avoiding challenges because of this.
"In the short term, this can look like a child who suddenly doesn't want to go to soccer anymore, refuses to try the harder book or who erases their drawing so many times the paper tears," she explains. "They are not being difficult. They are managing fear."
She shares that children can start to associate their self-worth with perfection. They might think, "If I am not perfect, then I am nothing."
“This sets a foundation of low self-esteem and conditional self-worth," Dr. Pearson adds. "It can also lead to burnout due to chronic stress associated with perfectionism, a fear of failure and a fixed mindset where the child believes that mistakes are a sign of incompetence."
7 Other Phrases To Avoid Using With Kids 1. "You're so smart""You're so smart" is another well-meaning phrase that can have an unintended negative effect on kids.
"This phrase reinforces a fixed mindset and views intelligence as an innate trait," Dr. Pearson explains.
Dr. Todey agrees, saying kids can start to make "smart" their identity and want to protect it at all costs.
"Making a mistake becomes threatening, and they may begin to worry: 'What if this proves I'm not actually smart?'" she shares. "Rather than risk that conclusion, many children begin avoiding challenges, choosing easier tasks where success is guaranteed."
2. "It's OK—I wasn’t good at that either"This one is so often said when a child is struggling with a subject, like math or science.
"This phrase does not foster a growth mindset and reinforces that skills are innate rather than learned," Dr. Pearson says.
3. "Why did you do that?"Dr. Todey notes this one often comes out when a child makes a mistake or questionable choice.
"It feels reasonable because we want to understand," she states. "But to a child's ear, especially when asked with any hint of frustration or disbelief, 'Why did you do that?' lands as judgment, not curiosity."
4. "That's not a big deal"Dr. Todey says parents and grandparents often use this phrase as a way to comfort kids, but it can have a different effect.
"When a child is upset about something that seems minor to an adult—such as a friend didn't sit with them at lunch—dismissing it with 'that's not a big deal'... sends a message about their inner world," she notes.
The psychologist says children hear this phrase (and its evil twin, "You're too sensitive/dramatic") as, "Your feelings are wrong or you shouldn't feel this way.”
5. "That's easy"A task may be easy to you, but don't underestimate its difficulty level for a child (or the impact of this phrase.
"'That’s easy' can make kids feel inadequate if it doesn’t feel easy to them," Dr. Tsang explains. "It may discourage them from expressing difficulty."
6. "If you work harder, you will do better"Honestly? Even adults can find "just work harder" incredibly frustrating, so it's unsurprising that kids do, too.
"This implies failure is from a lack of effort, potentially leading a child to question their competence," Dr. Pearson reveals. "This phrase also neglects effective problem-solving."
7. "Because I said so"Real talk: "Every parent has said this," Dr. Todey notes. "It comes out at the end of a long day when we are exhausted from responding to our kids’ constant questioning. It's understandable."
But the problem?
"As a regular response, 'Because I said so' communicates that authority is the reason for everything, and that questions are unwelcome," she explains.
She adds that, over time, it can foster resentment and erode the sense that the parent-child relationship involves mutual respect.

5 Better Alternative Phrases To Say to Kids1. "I noticed how hard you worked on that"Dr. Todey loves that this phrase cultivates a growth mindset by praising the effort rather than the outcome or innate ability.
"'I noticed' is also important," she shares. "It signals that you are paying attention—that your child's process matters to you, not just their results. This simple observation communicates volumes about your values as a parent. We care about the work, not just the win."
2. "It's OK to make mistakes—that's how we learn"This one is a much-needed antidote to the glorification of perfection and so much more.
"This phrase does several things at once," Dr. Todey explains. "It normalizes error. It reframes mistakes as information rather than indictment."
She shares that the use of the word "we" is intentional, and it matters more than meets the eye.
"When parents use 'we' language around struggle and learning, it signals solidarity," the psychologist says. "You are not above the process. You make mistakes too. You are in this with your child. That is profoundly reassuring to a young person who is watching you for cues about how to be human."
3. "Practice makes progress"Child psychologists enthusiastically suggest this one over "Practice makes perfect."
"Using this phrase places focus on the mastery of a skill and allows for healthy reflection on personal growth and progress," Dr. Pearson says.
4. "That didn’t go how you expected... What do you think you could try next?"Dr. Tsang likes that this one pivots a kid's focus from the outcome to problem-solving.
"It helps kids to shift away from being stuck on the fear of failure and toward tolerating disappointment, building flexibility and developing agency to try again," Dr. Tsang states.
5. "Tell me more about that"Dr. Todey suggests using this one when a child is upset, excited, confused or struggling to articulate something. She calls it an invitation and "one of the most powerful tools a parent has."
"It communicates, 'You are not too much. Your inner world is worth my time. I am here, and I am listening,'" she says.
She notes that this phrase builds a relationship in which kids come to you with hard things, not just the easy ones.
"That foundation, built through thousands of small moments of genuine curiosity, is what makes it possible for your child to come to you at 15 with something difficult, because they learned at 6 that you could handle what they felt," she states.
Final TakeawaysWords can have an enormous impact on kids and become part of their inner monologue, shaping the view of themselves they take into adulthood. Here are some things to keep in mind as you choose your words and go-to phrases with kids:
- "Practice makes perfect" is well-meaning but best avoided. Child psychologists say it positions perfection as an achievable standard and may lead to low frustration tolerance and a fear of taking risks.
- It's also best to skip other common phrases. Child psychologists also advise against phrases like "You're so smart" (can have a similar effect as "practice makes perfect") and "Because I said so" (erodes mutual respect).
- More positive phrases exist. Phrases like "Practice makes progress," "It's OK to make mistakes—that's how we learn," and "Tell me more" develop confidence, foster problem-solving and build trust between parents and kids.

Trader Joe’s Fans Are Split Over This New Release
A new item at Trader Joe's is quickly becoming a fan favorite, although not everybody is rushing to get their hands on the latest release. The store recently introduced BBQ-flavored potato chips, and some fans are wondering what took them so long.
The new BBQ potato chips at Trader Joe's have been popping up on social media and Reddit in the past week or so. On April 7, the Trader Joe's Treasure Hunt Instagram page shared a first look at them, and one follower commented, "I tried these today and they were so good."
Another follower concurred. "These are soooo good."
Trader Joe's describes the new BBQ potato chips as having a "truly bold and full-flavored suite of BBQ sauce-inspired seasonings, which includes a mix of molasses, onion, and garlic, and even a touch of cinnamon and clove."
View this post on InstagramThe retailer adds that the "profoundly tasty Chip" pairs well with "grilled fare of all sorts," and is the perfect chip to dunk "dependably into creamy dips."
The new chips come in a 10-ounce bag and are priced at $2.99.
The reactions from potential customers have been somewhat mixed in these early days.
The new BBQ chip offering has some Trader Joe's fans feeling especially eager to get a hold of the Patio Chips and Carolina Gold Potato Chips. Both are expected to return closer to summertime, but are not available right now.
Others are rallying for other flavor profiles. Specifically, customers want to get a salt and vinegar flavor variation, and seem less intrigued by the BBQ offering.
A few people pointed out that Trader Joe's tried a BBQ-flavored potato chip quite a while ago, but apparently, the flavoring was completely different.
One customer on Reddit gushed, "Omg finally," after learning of the new chip option.
A less impressed customer wrote, "I tried these. They're okay. They tasted like any other generic brand of BBQ chips. Nothing special about the taste or texture."
Another Redditor declared, "These might be the best BBQ chips since Sprouts discontinued their classic BBQ chips many years ago. These taste like chips made in the 1980s."
Someone else on Reddit admitted, "My store taste tested these today. They are OK, but I'm holding out for the Carolina golds!"
An impressed Trader Joe's customer shared, "Ugh these are soo good. BBQ chips are my fave and I finished this bag in two days (oink!) I hope these become a regular item."
According to another pleased customer, the Trader Joe's BBQ potato chips are "Just a nice clean and simple bbq chip," noting they thought the chips were "great."

Amy Duggar King Suggests the Duggar Family Is Buying Kendra's Silence Amid Joseph's Sex Scandal
As Joseph Duggar's sexual assault case continues to make headlines, his cousin Amy Duggar King is sharing a rather bold opinion about what she believes is happening to his wife Kendra Duggar behind closed doors.
In an Instagram video shared on Saturday, April 11, Amy laid out what she thinks the Duggar family is saying to Kendra, 27, in the wake of her 31-year-old husband’s arrest, framing it as her opinion. The picture she paints is one of financial incentives wrapped in religious pressure.
"Kendra, we love you so much. We're gonna band together as a family," Amy, 39, said, mimicking what she believes is being said. "You're showing your strength in God right now. By staying with him and just being a devoted wife and loving him, you are showing him God's love."
View this post on InstagramAmy went further, suggesting material gifts may be on the table to keep Kendra in line. "You know how Anna [Duggar] got a new house? Well, I was thinking maybe you should look on Realtor. Let's see if there's one for you. Also, have you looked at the new cars lately? There's some really great models," she continued, bringing up her other cousin Josh Duggar’s scandal for child pornography, which he is currently serving a 12 year sentence for.
Amy wrapped up her video with a strong message: "Real support doesn't require silence. And real support doesn't trap you in a system that protected the problem in the first place."

“ Oh my word you are on fire!!!,” one fan wrote in the comments alongside three clapping emojis.
Another wrote, “I hope ALL the girls hear this.”
“As someone who used to be in that cult, yes, this is exactly their playbook,” a third revealed.
Amy’s comments come as Joseph's legal situation remains serious. The 31-year-old was arrested on March 18 and charged with Lewd and Lascivious Behavior involving unlawful sexual activity with a minor. Two days later, he and Kendra were hit with separate child endangerment charges. Joseph posted a $600,000 bond following his first court appearance on March 31, with conditions including no contact with the alleged victim and no unsupervised contact with minors. His next court date is set for April 20.
In a jail call obtained by TMZ, Kendra told Joseph that despite the family's "disappointment," their support remains. "Just know everybody loves you, even if they're disappointed," she said.
Amy's final message to Kendra? "Real support doesn't require silence.”

Emmy-Winning Series That Defined an Era Can’t Stop Dividing It
Euphoria Season 3 is finally back.
Premiering tomorrow night after a four-year hiatus, Sam Levinson's culture-shaping series has already made the early screening rounds, and the reviews are in. If we're reading the tea leaves right, the HBO phenomenon may be cementing itself as one of the most debated prestige dramas of the streaming era.
View this post on InstagramFrom Variety and The Hollywood Reporter to The Daily Beast and Time, the reviews are as scattered as a Gen Z group chat at 2 a.m. You have some saying the Emmy-winning series is “better than ever” and Zendaya is "dazzling," with others questioning its relevance and hurling low-blow descriptors like “gross,” “unhinged,” and “disaster.”
Euphoria fans have been waiting breathlessly for the show to return, following delays from WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The series, whose debut in 2019 became a generation-defining cultural force, with its narrative about a group of toxic teenagers navigating love, addition, and identity in a haze of neon-lit chaos, was considered must-see TV. And even though its third season isn’t hitting widely with critics, all the elements that made it the second most-watched show on HBO are still here.
Related: ‘Euphoria’: Zendaya Reveals If Season 3 Will Be the Last of the HBO Show
“The frenetic pace, the rat-a-tat editing, the deadpan voiceovers, the pitch-black humor, the masterful acting, the eye-popping visuals … everything you loved about Euphoria is still intact,” Vogue writes.
There is, however, a massive difference between this season and the previous two: Our high schoolers are all grown up and loose in the wild. Zendaya’s Rue is running drugs across the border, Sydney Sweeney’s Cassie is a bored soon-to-be housewife on OnlyFans, Alexa Demie’s Maddie is engaged to Jacob Elordi’s Nate, Hunter Schafer’s Jules is now a sugar baby, and Maude Apatow’s Lexi is girlbossing in Hollywod alongside a prolific showrunner played by the one and only Sharon Stone.
Their worlds are bigger, and their storylines are bleeding out across the seedy underbelly of the West Coast. It's either the perfect recipe for the chaos, collapse, and escalation we live for with Euphoria, or a forumula for complete and total implosion. Either way, we're tuning in.
Euphoria Season 3 premieres Sunday, April 12, at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max.

Prince Harry Sued by Charity He Co-Founded to Honor Princess Diana
Prince Harry is being sued for defamation by Sentebale, the charity he co-founded in honor of his mother, Princess Diana.
Sentebale’s Board of Trustees and Executive Director confirmed they had "commenced legal proceedings" against Prince Harry, 41, and a former trustee of the charity, Mark Dyer, in a statement on April 10.
"The charity seeks the court’s intervention, protection, and restitution following a coordinated adverse media campaign conducted since 25 March 2025 that has caused operational disruption and reputational harm to the charity, its leadership, and its strategic partners," read the statement from Sentebale. "The proceedings have been brought against Prince Harry and Mark Dyer, identified through evidence as the architects of that adverse media campaign, which has had significant viral impact and triggered an onslaught of cyber-bullying directed at the charity and its leadership."
Court records showed the case was filed in the London High Court on March 24, Reuters reported. The charge is listed as "defamation - libel and slander."

A spokesperson for the Duke of Sussex said he and Dyer deny any wrongdoing and "categorically reject these offensive and damaging claims."
"It is extraordinary that charitable funds are now being used to pursue legal action against the very people who built and supported the organisation for nearly two decades, rather than being directed to the communities the charity was created to serve," the spokesperson said in a statement, per Reuters.
Harry, the youngest son of King Charles, founded Sentebale in 2006, nine years after Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris at age 36, with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho. The organization’s name means "forget-me-not" in the local language of Lesotho in Southern Africa and helps young people with HIV and AIDS in Lesotho and Botswana. Diana famously used her platform to spread awareness and stop misinformation about the disease.

Harry served as a patron within the organization until he resigned in March 2025, along with Prince Seeiso and several trustees, after a public dispute with Sentebale’s chair of the board, Sophie Chandauka. The rift centered around disagreements about fundraising strategies.
At the time of their relationship fizzling, Chandauka reported the Duke of Sussex and the trustees to Britain's charity regulator over alleged bullying and harassment. Harry called the situation "heartbreaking" at the time, claiming "blatant lies hurt those who have invested decades" in supporting the children in Southern Africa.
The U.K. Charity Commission reported in August 2025 that it had found no evidence of bullying or “overreach,” per the Charity Commission’s website, but noted “all the charity’s then trustees contributed” to the dispute due to a lack of defined roles.
In response to the report, Chandauka said, “I appreciate the Charity Commission for its conclusions, which confirm the governance concerns I raised privately in February 2025. The experience was intense, and it became a test of our strategic clarity and operational resilience."
RELATED: Why Donald Trump Has a Portrait of Queen Elizabeth in Mar-a-Lago
Prince Harry released his own statement at the time, acknowledging there were “no findings of wrongdoing” and “no evidence of widespread bullying, harassment, or misogyny,” but he claimed there were shortcomings in the investigation.
"Despite all that, their report falls troublingly short in many regards, primarily the fact that the consequences of the current Chair’s actions will not be borne by her, but by the children who rely on Sentebale’s support," a spokesperson for the British royal said at the time. "Sentebale has been a deeply personal and transformative mission for Prince Harry, established to serve some of the most vulnerable children in Lesotho and Botswana. For 19 years, its dedicated staff and steadfast supporters have provided vital care to over 100,000 young people across southern Africa, including young people living with HIV/AIDS and those facing mental health challenges. As custodians of this once brilliant charity, Prince Seeiso, Prince Harry and the former Board of Trustees helped grow Sentebale from the seed of an idea to — like its namesake — a flowering force for good.”
1972 Hit Film Was Just Ranked 'the Greatest Movie' of the Last 90 Years
Since its release in 1972, Francis Ford Coppola's masterpiece The Godfatherhas been showered with acclaim and accolades. In April 2026, Collider continued the tradition of complimenting the Academy Award-winning crime drama by ranking it as the greatest movie made since 1936.
The list also featured beloved films like David Lynch's 2001 movie, Mulholland Drive, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind from 2004, 1941's Citizen Kane, The Thing from 1982, and 12 Angry Men from 1957. Collider reported, however, that the first film from the Godfather trilogy took home the list's number one spot because of its long-lasting popularity, incredible cast, and cynical view of success and wealth.
The Cast of 'The Godfather' Discussed the Film's Lasting Popularity in 2017In celebration of The Godfather's 45th anniversary, members of the cast, includingAl Pacino, Robert Duvall, and James Caan, came together to share insight about the film in a 2017 interview with TODAY. Pacino, who played Michael Corleone, said filming The Godfather didn't seem "that long" ago because it's always been culturally relevant.
"Because it's somewhat in the conscious life. It's referred to a lot. It's so sort of everpresent," said Pacino, now 85, during the TODAY interview.
Caan, who played Pacino's on-screen brother, Santino "Sonny" Corleone, also shared that he wasn't surprised that the film has remained so beloved. In addition, Caan credited Coppola's ability to hire the perfect cast and crew as to why the movie still holds up.
"The truth of the matter is, and this may never happen again, and it's all really due to Francis. I mean, Francis put together a cast the likes of which I've never been had the pleasure again of working. I mean, he put together a crew that all became the top of their, you know, before they were known, whether it be [cinematographer] Gordy Willis, [editor] Walter Murch, etc.," said Cann, who died in 2022 at the age of 82.
Bravo Reveals 'Real Housewives of Potomac' Season 11 Cast and the 'Grande Dame' Is Officially Back After Serving Time
The "Grande Dame" is officially back.
Bravo confirmed the cast for The Real Housewives of Potomac Season 11 on April 10, and the biggest headline is the full-time return of Karen Huger following her time behind bars for a DUI conviction.
Huger, 62, was sentenced to two years in prison with one year suspended after being found guilty of DUI charges connected to a solo crash in Potomac, Maryland in March 2024. She was released from the Montgomery County Detention Center on Sept. 2, 2025 and was notably absent from Season 10 of the series.
Her return was teased when she appeared in a mid-season trailer sitting down for a post-prison interview with Andy Cohen, but now it's confirmed: the "Grande Dame" is a full-time Housewife once again.
Robyn Dixon Returns as a 'Friend'Huger isn't the only OG making a comeback. Robyn Dixon, who has been part of the franchise since Season 1, is returning as a "Friend of the Housewives" after sitting out Season 10.
The rest of the Season 11 cast includes returning Housewives Gizelle Bryant, Wendy Osefo, Ashley Darby, Tia Glover and Stacey Rusch. On the way out are Angel Massie, Keiarna Stewart and Jassi Harris, who will not be returning for the new season.
View this post on Instagram What to Expect From Huger's ReturnFans have been eager to see how Huger addresses her legal troubles on camera. During her DUI sentencing, prosecutors labeled her a repeat offender, citing three previous alcohol-related traffic cases between 2006 and 2011. She was also ordered to pay $2,900 in fines, complete five years of probation and could not drive for one year.
In court, Huger acknowledged responsibility and expressed gratitude that no one was harmed in the crash. Her sit-down with Cohen during the Season 10 reunion gave viewers a first look at how she's processing the experience, but Season 11 will be the first time audiences see her navigate daily life after prison while cameras are rolling.
No premiere date has been announced for Season 11, but filming is expected to be underway soon.
Derek Hough's Wife Hayley Erbert Gets Candid About Celebrating Her Daughter While 'Quietly Grieving'
It's been just a few short months since Dancing With the Stars judge Derek Hough and his wife, Hayley Erbert, welcomed their first child, Everley Capri Hough. Since that day, the pair have been reveling in parenthood, doting on their tiny daughter and sharing adorable photos and videos. But even when Everley was just two weeks old, they marveled at how much she was "changing every day."
On April 10, Erbert posted a carousel of Instagram photos from the little family's first Easter together. Everley lies on her back on a picnic blanket, while Erbert is pictured lovingly kissing her daughter and smiling at the photographer, presumably Hough. The professional dancer also posted a caption that expanded on the feelings they first mentioned months before.
View this post on Instagram"Motherhood is even more complex and contradicting than I could have ever imagined," she wrote. "It feels like living in two places at once. Where joy and heartache can both be true, all of the time. My heart is constantly bursting open, while also breaking into a million pieces."
"I find myself celebrating every little bit of your growth, while quietly grieving the version of you that existed just moments before," she continued.
Erbert recognized the "beautiful contradiction" that she felt, feeling excited to watch Everley grow while also wanting to stop time. "This pull between holding on and letting go, between wanting time to slow down and knowing it never will."
She finished her post by promising to keep "soaking in every little detail, every version of you, every fleeting moment we have together."
Erbert is definitely soaking in all the warm-and-fuzzy feelings that come with becoming a parent. However, she's also proven that her dancing prowess and self-care needs are stronger than ever. Hough posted a video showing him and Erbert working out in Alo shock suits. "Wifey has me trying some new things," he wrote.
Erbert also turned up at one of the Savannah Banana games to dance, blowing everyone away with her strength and flexibility so soon after giving birth.
"The fact that [Hayley Erbert] just had a baby and can already move like this is insane!!!" Commented one impressed fan. "A woman's body is capable of incredible things!!!"
