Kelly Clarkson and John Legend Break Down 'The Voice's Shocking Voting Twist: 'It’s a Different Ballgame' (Exclusive)
When The Voice begins its semifinals tonight and on tomorrow’s finale episode, there’s one big difference for Season 29 of the singing competition than ever before. There are no live shows, so America doesn’t get to vote for the winner.
Rather, an audience comprised of Superfans and former contestants will watch all the performances and then at the end of the show, cast their ballot for their favorite. So, what that means for the semifinals is they will select one artist each from John Legend and Adam Levine’s teams, and two from Kelly Clarkson’s team she has the advantage after having won the All-Star Showdown -- to move into the finale.
“I actually had to have [an] inner dialogue about this,” Clarkson tells Parade when asked about preparing for the new voting process. “I think all three of us coaches – we’ve been doing the show for so long, but it’s definitely different. The difference is [that] the Grammys are something where you’re nominated by your peers in the industry. It’s a different kind of ballgame for an award show that is fan-voted. It’s just a different ballgame.
"I did think we were going to have a hard time with certain things because these are also people who have been through it. These are previous artists who have been on The Voice and sometimes America does tend to vote a certain way. I did know it would be a little difficult, but also, I knew it would be cool because these artists know as I do how hard the process is. You have two and a half, three minutes to show people what you’re capable of. When you have so much talent, it’s a hard thing to do. With the peers and the superfans, it was a different ballgame. I feel like it was a challenge that no other artist on this show has had.”

Legend also agrees that it is a different ballgame. But even so, it didn’t change how he selected his three semifinalists.
“The first thing I do is I go back and listen to [performances] on headphones, and then I do a ranking of my artists based on me listening on headphones,” he tells Parade, explaining his process. “Because there can be a lot of the fog of war when you’re in the midst of the Blinds, and all the crowd’s there and all these other things are going on, and you may not be assessing things as level-headedly as you would like, and so I like to listen back and then I get a better idea of where I think my artists are. Then each round I do the same thing and re-rank them in my head based on their actual performances on the stage.”
And this season, Legend says that his three semifinalists -- KJ Willis, Lucas West and Syd Millevoi – were his Top 3 after the Blinds.

“If I look back at my rankings of these artists, these were among my favorites after the Blinds, and so they’ve been consistently excellent throughout the competition,” he says.
In fact, Legend feels that with the new voting method, he may have a better shot at winning a second season.
“Honestly, I figure that room is probably going to be more closely aligned to my taste than the vast swath of America voting, and so I feel a certain amount of trust for the room,” he says. “I think it’s a discerning musical audience, and it makes me actually a little more optimistic about how they’re going to vote.”
The Voice airs Monday nights at 9 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. Streams next day on Peacock.

Iconic '70s Rocker Sends Message on Late Bandmate Amid Farewell Tour
Little Feat's Bill Payne shared a lovely tribute to their former bandmate Lowell George.
George, who was a founder and primary guitarist of the American rock band, would have turned 81 years old on Monday. In June 1979, the musician passed away from a heart attack caused by an accidental heroin overdose in a hotel room in Arlington, Virginia, a day after his concert at Washington, D.C.'s Lisner Auditorium, for his tour in support of his solo album, Thanks I'll Eat it Here. He was just 34 years old.
Little Feat continued after George's death, going through multiple lineup changes over the past 50 years. Currently, the group is on their The Last Farewell Tour, celebrating their legacy and transition away from heavy touring. Payne, the group's pianist who has been the only founding member to stay all these years, wrote a beautiful tribute for George on Instagram on Monday.
"On the bus last night, I, like most of us, was feeling good but tired with all that had led up to us being on the road for the first of the Last Farewell Tour shows. For one crazy moment, I had envisioned what 81 candles on a birthday cake would look like, the flames casting dancing shadows on the wall," Payne wrote out. "I know it was a silly thought, but I don’t see any harm in letting imagination take over for what is a big moment in the band’s history and another tip-of-the hat to Lowell George on his birthday."
View this post on InstagramThe American Southern rock band was formed in 1969 in Los Angeles by George, Payne, Roy Estrada and Richie Hayward. In the 1970s, they released an album every year, before breaking up in the 1980s after George left the group, before his death due to creative differences. They eventually reunited again in 1987, and have released 22 albums since, with their most recent being Strike Up The Band last year. The current lineup includes Payne, Sam Clayton, Kenny Gradney, Fred Tackett, Scott Sharrard and Tony Leone.
Though George's exit caused the band to break up for almost a decade, Payne never held it against him, telling Highway 81 Revisted in 2019 that, "he will always be a part of Little Feat."
"For some people, he was the main attraction, until they dig deeper and they see that some songs were written by other people that maybe they thought were written by him. It doesn’t denigrate Lowell at all," Payne said. "He had some wonderful songs, his phrasing was incredible, not only as a guitar player but as a singer in particular. So we honor Lowell every time we hit the stage.”

The Last Farewell Tour kicked off last Friday night in Orlando, Florida, and is set to conclude on May 9 in St. Charles, Illinois. Tickets are available on Little Feat's official website.
"He was always bigger than life. Time to let loose, indeed," Payne concluded in his Instagram tribute. "Celebrate the man, the band, and our time we have left with each other, of which there is much more to come."

Iconic Convenience Store Chain to Shut Down 600+ Locations in 2026
A chain of convenience stores is set to close hundreds of locations in the coming year. 7-Eleven, which opened its first location in 1927, revealed in recent earnings documents that 645 locations across North America will be closing during its 2026 fiscal year.
According to C-Store Dive, parent company Seven & i Holdings included the information about the closings in its Brief Summary for FY 2025, which it released on April 9. The company's fiscal year runs from March 1 to February 28.
Some of the locations slated for closure will be converted into "wholesale fuel stores." The company still has plans to open 200 new locations across North America. However, as C-Store Dive noted, this will be the fifth straight year where 7-Eleven closes more stores than it opens across North America.
The site also indicated that the estimated 645 closings in 7-Eleven's fiscal year 2026 will be the highest number in recent years, by a notable amount. The number of stores opening has been relatively steady for the past few years, ranging from 122 to 315. Over the same timeframe, however, closures have typically run between 227 and 474.
The new 7-Eleven locations generally follow the chain's "large format, food-focused design," noted C-Store Dive.
The site Mass Market Retailers shared that convenience stores have been seeing success with a focus on quality prepared foods and a wider selection of food options. Tobacco and fuel remain "core traffic drivers," but the in-store experience with drinks and food has been a significant sales driver.
7-Eleven has not released a detailed list of the locations closing or the timing of the closings.
While the number of 7-Eleven convenience stores closing in 2026 is substantial, around 13,000 locations remain across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The chain started in Texas, and now has over 86,000 stores open worldwide, in 19 different countries.

1978 Classic Launched the Career of the ‘Best Female Actor of All Time’ Nearly 50 Years Ago
A landmark wartime epic, The Deer Hunter not only became a 1979 Oscar magnet, but it launched the career of a legend many consider the greatest female actor of all time.
Boasting a star-studded cast with topliners Robert De Niro and Christopher Walken, the film also features a young Meryl Streep as Linda, the girlfriend of Walken’s Nick who gets closer to De Niro's Michael, who plays a soldier recently home from the Vietnam War. It was a small role for Streep, but its impact could not have been bigger: She was nominated for her first Academy Award for what was essentially her first major film role.
View this post on InstagramFast-forward to April 14, 1980, and Streep would win her first Oscar, for Kramer vs. Kramer. The trend would continue through the decades with the actor scoring 21 nominations since 1979 and winning ithree statuettes.
In 2023, Streep jumped over to the small screen for a recurring role in the third season of Only Murders in the Building opposite Martin Short. She plays Loretta Durkin, an actor and the love interest of Short's Oliver. In signature Streep form, she was nominated for an Emmy for the role.
As for The Deer Hunter, much like its quiet acting prodigy in a modest lace gown, the film reinvented the wartime drama, shifting the action away from the battlefield and into the traumatized psyches of the men fighting for their country. The highly controversial Russian roulette scenes are still discussed today.
Often cited in the same sentence as Francis Ford Coppola’s war epic, Apocalypse Now, The Deer Hunter marked a turning point in Vietnam-era cinema -- and a breakout moment in the rise of Meryl Streep.
Don't miss Streep's latest project: her return to the iconic "dragon lady," Miranda Priestly, in The Devil Wears Prada 2, out in theaters May 1.
The Deer Hunter is available to buy or rent on Prime Video.

Her last name has been circulating lately. She is the niece of Penelope “Penny” Knatchbull, Countess Mountbatten of Burma, who was known as a close confidant of Prince Philip later in his life. She was included as a character in Season 5 of The Crown, portrayed by Natascha McElhone, and she has even been referred to as the "second-most important woman in the Duke of Edinburgh's life” in the 2020 biography, Prince Philip Revealed.
While her family is adjacent to the royals, Daisy has been forging her own path. She is the founder and CEO of her design brand, Knatchbull, which was “Savile Row's first and only shopfront exclusively for women in its prestigious 200-year history,” per the brand’s website.
“Through her all-female staffed business, Daisy continues to challenge industry norms while maintaining the street's reputation for exceptional craftsmanship, combining centuries-old techniques with modern styling specifically designed for women,” Knatchbull’s website reads.

Daisy is making sure women all over the U.K. are dressed as impeccably as her royal family.
“I would love to give as many women as possible the experience to have something made bespoke,” she told Quintessentially in 2023. “Our clients always say they wish they’d found us sooner; our biggest problem [as a brand] is that people don’t know we exist.”

1972 Classic Rock Song Named No. 1 Hit Became a Timeless Classic
More than five decades later, one song still has listeners singing along to every word —cementing its place as one of the most iconic tracks in music history.
Released in 1972, "American Pie" by Don McLean soared to No. 1 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon. Thanks to its nostalgic reflections on a changing era, this classic rock anthem continues to resonate with generations, solidifying its legacy as a timeless masterpiece.
The tune was written and recorded by McLean for his second studio album, American Pie. The single became a No. 1 hit in the United States and held that spot for four weeks in January 1972, after two months on the Billboard Hot 100. The song, which is over eight minutes long, also held the record for almost 50 years as the longest song to be crowned the top spot, before Taylor Swift's "All Too Well (10 Minute Version)" broke it in 2021.
In addition, "American Pie" was listed as the No. 5 song on the RIAA project "Songs of the Century," and a 2000 cover by Madonna reached No. 1 in at least 15 countries, including the UK, Canada and Australia.
Don McLean performs on stage during a Music Memorial for Jeff Carson at Nashville Palace on May 10, 2022 in Nashville, Tennessee."American Pie" was slightly inspired by the deaths of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson in a plane crash in 1959, marking the end of the era of early rock and roll, and popularized the phrase "The Day The Music Died," which is sang throughout the song.
McLean spoke with The Guardian about "American Pie" and opened up about how the death of his father really impacted him as a teenager. The singer has never explicitly said what the tune is about, but Holly was one of the singer's biggest musical inspirations and favorite artists. Rob Walker, the journalist who interviewed McLean in 2020, asked if the song had a connection with his father's death. When he was 15 years old, McLean had a premonition that his father was going to die soon. A few days after telling his grandmother, his father "dropped dead" in front of him.
"You've hit the nail on the head. I mean, that’s exactly right. That’s why I don’t like talking about the lyrics because I wanted to capture and say something that was almost unspeakable. It’s indescribable," McLean said. "American Pie is a biographical song."

McLean was raised in upstate New York and grew up listening to folk music. After four months studying at Villanova University, McLean eventually dropped out and signed with folk music agent Harold Leventhal for months before teaming up with Herb Gart. He spent the next few months performing at small clubs around New York City and releasing his debut album Tapestry in 1970.
A year later, he released American Pie, which launched his career. He described in the sale catalogue that the song is about life "heading in the wrong direction." The catalogue confirmed other references, such as the mentions of Elvis Presley ("the king") and Bob Dylan ("the jester"), and confirmed that the song culminates with a description of the killing of Meredith Hunter at the Altamont Free Concert, ten years after the plane crash that killed Holly, Valens and Richardson.

Since then, McLean has released 20 more studio albums, with his most recent being American Boys in 2024. The 80-year-old musician is set to go on tour around the United States this summer and Australia in October to celebrate the 55th anniversary of "American Pie."
Fans can purchase tickets to his upcoming tour on his official website and listen to "American Pie" and the rest of McLean's discography on streaming platforms.
Former 'DWTS' Pro Hasn't Watched the Show Since Being Suddenly Cut
Former Dancing With the Stars pro Artem Chigvintsev sat down with Peta Murgatroyd and Sharna Burgess for a chat on The Penthouse with Peta podcast. In part one of the episode, which was released on Monday, April 13, Chigvintsev talked about being cut from the show in 2024, which came as a surprise to many longtime fans.
"You do have this giant void in your life after the show," Chigvintsev told Murgatroyd and Burgess. "But it's the aftermath of other people telling you like, 'oh, I miss you on the show,' or 'I'm like big fan.' It's a constant...And that never really goes away."
Chigvintsev went on to say that being cut from Dancing With the Stars was really tough as he felt he didn't really get closure after being part of the show for several seasons.
"I'm not going to lie, I [haven 't watched] one episode since I exited the show. I haven't seen one," he said, later adding, "I wish the show would [say], 'we just want to, you know, like, [let you know] this is your last season, enjoy it. This is like, we really want you to have a good time.'" And like that, even that part of the closure would have been so much, in that they do know.”
Chigvintsev wasn't brought back for Season 33 and was informed of the decision days before the full cast was announced. While some people thought that the decision was made after Chigvintsev's personal issues and subsequent arrest stemming from an argument with now-ex-wife, Nikki Garcia.
During his conversation with Murgatroyd and Burgess, Chigvintsev seemed pretty certain that his time on Dancing With the Stars had come to a close and that he wouldn't be returning. It's unknown if that's his decision, a decision made by production, or, perhaps, a combination of both.
Chigvintsev first joined the cast of Dancing With the Stars on Season 19. He won the Mirrorball Trophy alongside Kaitlyn Bristowe on Season 29.

Jennie Garth Recalls Moment Her Marriage to 'Twilight' Star 'Hit the Fan' and His Infuriating Comment
Beverly Hills, 90210 starJennie Garth is opening up about her second marriage to Twilight starPeter Facinelli. The actor looks back at the turmoil behind their marriage and the moment that made her realize it wasn't going to last.
In the mid '90s, Garth met Facinelli while working on the TV film Unfinished Affairs. The two actors dated for roughly five years before getting married in January 2001. Before tying the knot, Garth and Facinellie had their first daughter in 1997, and would have their second in 2002, and their third in 2006. To many people's surprise, Facinelli filed for divorce from the What I Like About You star in 2012, and it was later finalized in 2013.
Garth recently reported having taken pills and heavily drinking following the divorce, and in a recent episode of the Armchair Expert podcast, revealed when she knew it was over. She recalls the moment they went to couples counseling, and the counselor asked her why she was with someone who didn't love her.
“That’s where everything hit the fan," said Garth. “It was echoing. I’ll never forget it. That just gutted me, and I was like, ‘Yeah, no s–t. Give up, it’s time."
In the podcast, Garth also openly explains that she felt Facinelli was "never truly in love with me. The kind of love that it takes to be married to sustain a long-term relationship." She also adds that the future Twilight star wasn't 100% ready to be a father at 21 years old and was still trying to figure himself out as an actor.

By 2012, the couple was already separated, when Garth remembers the moment Facinelli asked for a divorce and a comment that angered her. She explains that the actor visited them and their kids while she was on a farm in central California. TheNurse Jackie star entered the RV and asked for a divorce.
Garth remembered him commenting, "'Jen, someday you’ll thank me for this'" and how much it "infuriated" her, and "that pissed me off."
After their finalized divorce, Garth began dating actor Dave Abrams in 2014 after a blind date. They were married in 2015 and initially filed for divorce in 2018. By February 2019, Abrams dismissed the divorce filings, and the couple reconciled. Facinelli is currently engaged to Lily Anne Harrison, whom he began dating in 2016.
1970 Hit Film, Nominated for Rare Academy Award, Ranked Among 'Best Movies of All Time'
Woodstock has been ranked one of the best movies of all time by Rotten Tomatoes. The iconic 1970 music documentary ranked on an eclectic list of 300 films that included The Wizard of Oz, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and other classics.
Woodstock documented the famous Woodstock Music & Art Fair held at Max Yasgur’s farm in Bethel, New York, from Aug. 15 to 18, 1969. The three-day celebration of peace and love featured performances by Crosby, Stills and Nash, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, and more, but there were also plenty of non-musical moments that painted a picture of the changing times.
The film was nominated for three Academy Awards, including a nod for Best Editing for editor Thelma Schoonmaker, according to The American Film Institute. Up against the films Patton, M*A*S*H, and Tora Tora Tora!, Schoonmaker didn’t win, but her nomination was still a rarity for a documentary film.
The work was certainly put in. The film crew shot for 18 hours each day during the festival and wound up with miles of raw footage that wasn’t synced to the sound. Schoonmaker and director Michael Wadleigh spent months editing 315,000 feet of exposed film, AFI noted.
Woodstock was a massive hit film, grossing more than $34 million on a $600,000 budget, per The Numbers. Other estimates put the box office take at nearly $50 million.
Martin Scorsese was an assistant director on the filmThe 70-person Woodstock movie crew included a young Martin Scorsese, who served as an assistant director.
In an interview with Roger Ebert, Scorsese revealed, “We had 14 to 18 cameras at Woodstock. When those three days were over, we came back with 50 miles — 120 hours — of film. It took us more than two weeks just to look at the rushes.”
Speaking with Rolling Stone, Wadleigh revealed that he filmed the Woodstock grounds “as if it were a war zone." “And that’s why you see people in casts on their arms and legs, and hobbling down in the dirt,” he said. “I felt like the Sixties were ending, and we were going to head into more-depressed times, and that a lot of our ideals were not going to work out.”

Here’s Exactly What Happens to Your Blood Pressure When You Eat Yogurt
One of the best ways to support your cardiovascular health through your diet is by eating foods that support your blood pressure. High blood pressure is a major risk factor for experiencing a heart attack, stroke, kidney damage or cardiovascular disease, which is the number one cause of death in the U.S.
Unfortunately, many foods and drinks that are staples in the standard American diet raise blood pressure. This includes foods and drinks like fried foods, processed meats (like bacon, sausage and deli meat), ultra-processed pastries, sugary drinks and alcohol. Instead of consuming these foods and drinks regularly, the American Heart Association recommends a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, plant-based proteins (like beans, lentils and tofu), nuts, seeds, skinless poultry and fish.

You may be wondering where dairy products, like yogurt, fit into a diet that supports blood pressure. Especially if yogurt is your go-to breakfast or snack, it’s important to know how it impacts blood pressure, as well as heart health overall.
With this in mind, we talked to Margaret Junker, RDN, CDCES, a cardiovascular dietitian at UC Davis Health who specializes in helping people eat with blood pressure in mind. Keep reading for everything you need to know.

What To Look for When Buying YogurtWhen it comes to whether yogurt is a heart-healthy food or not, Junker points out that not all yogurts are the same. Some are made with full-fat dairy, while others are made with low-fat dairy. Some yogurts are flavored, while others are plain.
“Choose yogurt that is low in saturated fat, added sugar, processed ingredients and additives,” Junker says, on how to shop for yogurt that’s as nutrient-rich as possible. Junker says that she personally buys organic, non-fat yogurt or low-fat Greek yogurt that’s unsweetened. Then, she adds her own fruit, nuts and, sometimes, ground flaxseed. If she wants to sweeten it up, she adds a small amount of local honey or unprocessed maple syrup.

How Yogurt Impacts Blood PressureAs long as you keep these guidelines in mind when buying yogurt, Junker explains that eating it will not negatively impact blood pressure. In fact, she says that low-fat dairy is part of the DASH diet, an eating plan that was created with the purpose of lowering blood pressure.
"The nutrient context of yogurt balanced carbohydrates, protein and fat. This balance helps regulate blood glucose over time," Junker explains, adding that even non-fat yogurt has a balance of protein and carbohydrates. This matters because balanced blood sugar helps support blood pressure. Blood sugar spikes and crashes trigger cortisol and adrenaline, which increase heart rate and constrict blood vessels, which raises blood pressure. But when blood sugar is balanced, you can avoid this negative cascade.
According to a 2024 scientific study published in the International Journal of Hypertension that took into account more than 3,000 adults, those who ate yogurt several times a week had lower blood pressure than those who didn’t eat yogurt frequently.
Another study, published in the Journal of Hypertension, had similar results. Adults who ate five or more servings of yogurt a week were at a lower risk for high blood pressure than adults who didn’t eat yogurt.

Other Yogurt Health BenefitsYogurt isn’t just good for your heart. Junker points out that Greek yogurt is a good source of protein, which provides the body with energy and can help with satiety. If you’re trying to lose weight healthily, you likely already know the importance of eating enough protein, which is key for maintaining muscle mass.
Scientific research backs up that yogurt is a beneficial food to eat if you’re trying to lose weight. In one scientific analysis, yogurt consumption was associated with a lower body mass index and less body fat.
Junker says that another health benefit of yogurt is that it’s a good source of calcium. You may already know that calcium is a key nutrient for bone health, but did you know that it’s also important for cardiovascular health? Calcium is a key nutrient for heart health because it acts as a trigger for muscle contraction, which enables the heart to pump blood with every beat.
Yogurt also contains probiotics, which support gut health. Studies show that yogurt increases the amount of good bacteria in the gut, which then leads to a wide range of benefits, including lowering the risk of type 2 diabetes, assisting with weight loss and even helping reverse fatty liver disease.
While yogurt is clearly a very nutritious food (as long as you keep Junker’s aforementioned shopping tips in mind), Junker says that what’s most important when it comes to managing blood pressure through what you eat is your diet as a whole; not one individual food.
“Yogurt [is just one] of the wonderful foods that can be part of a heart-healthy diet. Whole foods with minimal processing, balance and variety are important keys to a healthy diet and heart-healthy overall,” she explains.
With that in mind, you can still enjoy yogurt as part of your breakfast or snack, but don’t forget about the wide range of other heart-healthy foods too.

1984 Hit Ranked Among ‘Greatest Songs of All Time’ Became a Breakup Anthem
No one can write a better heartbreak anthem than the "King of Funk-Rock."
In 2024, Rolling Stone ranked the 500 best songs of all time, compiling a list of the greatest musical works ever created. Ranked alongside Michael Jackson's 1982 song "Billie Jean" at No. 44 and Elton John's 1972 song "Tiny Dancer" at No. 47, Prince secured the No. 37 spot with his classic, "When Doves Cry."
Released in May 1984 as the lead single from his landmark sixth studio album, Purple Rain, "When Doves Cry" became a massive success. After only two months, the track climbed up the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at No. 1 for five consecutive weeks.

"When Doves Cry" marked Prince's first No. 1 hit and is widely considered his biggest commercial success. In August 1984, the track achieved a Platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) after selling over 2 million copies in the U.S. alone.
The success of the lead single acted as a major catalyst in boosting the acclaim of the album. Upon its release, Purple Rain became an immediate hit, topping the Billboard 200 for 24 consecutive weeks, attesting to Prince's cultural dominance at the time.
Produced and written entirely by Prince, "When Doves Cry" is recognizable for its intricate guitar work and an emotive vocal performance. Prince blended rock, funk and synth-pop to create an experimental masterpiece. The track is famously absent of a bass line, creating a lonely, stark atmosphere that amplifies the song's themes of heartbreak.
The lyricism explores the aftermath of a tumultuous relationship. Prince reflects on his intimate family life, articulating his fears of repeating his parents' dysfunctional dynamics. The track's vulnerability and raw emotion made it a definite breakup anthem, breaking the barrier of what a pop hit could be.
Over four decades after its release, "When Doves Cry" remains a vital piece of music history. The track continues to resonate with modern audiences through streaming platforms, racking up over 351 million streams on Spotify alone, affirming Prince's longstanding legacy as a rock and roll legend.

Bestselling Author’s New Novel Is Already Being Called 'Impossible to Put Down'
A bestselling author is switching things up for her next book, and she just revealed the cover. Tessa Bailey, who wrote the 2022 New York Times bestseller Hook, Line, and Sinker, has a new book, Broken Rival, debuting on October 6.
Blood and Ash author Jennifer Armentrout says that Broken Rival is Bailey at her "most intense, raw, and impossible to put down." She added that the story "grabs hold of your heart and refuses to let go. I devoured every page."
In a new Instagram post shared on April 13, Bailey revealed the cover for Broken Rival.
View this post on InstagramIn the caption of her new post, Bailey writes that Broken Rival is a "gripping, heated romance about a girl trapped in a new reality, forced to make a choice between two brothers—one who is the local golden boy, the other sworn to hunt down her kind—time travelers."
In November 2025, Bailey teased the new book during an appearance on the podcast Off the Shelf with Morgan Book.
"It's a completely different genre switch for me," Bailey noted. The time travel component is something Bailey has not written before, but it was an idea "I had to put on paper."
She explained, "It started off with this idea of, we have this high school golden couple. They love each other. Everybody in town loves these two. One day, there's a fire. He runs into the fire and doesn't come out."
After the heartbreaking loss, the character, Magnolia Brown, becomes obsessed with inventing time travel. She isolates herself. The town starts to write her off as a weirdo because she's trying to invent time travel," Bailey added. As the town ostracizes her, Magnolia finds that her dead boyfriend's brother is the only one who sticks with her.
"It's almost dystopian," Bailey described of the book. She added that as she started putting her ideas together, "I just went for it."
Ultimately, Bailey admits, "I'm hoping everybody just trusts me on it because... I don't want to oversell it, but I'll just say trust me. It's got all the same heat, maybe even more heat, than my contemporaries."
One early reviewer on Goodreads wrote they were giving Broken Rival "Infinity stars. Truly."
"I'm still sitting here trying to process how much this story unabashedly moved me!" the reviewer added. She noted, "I giggled, I gasped, I guffawed, I cried. I experienced an absolute full range of emotions, no warning, no breaks. And I loved it!"
The main character of Broken Rival is Magnolia Brown. She's 18 and your "average" high schooler, except she's also from 50 years in the future, the description for the book teases.
Her parents were scientists who invented time travel and were ultimately "seized and executed for illegally traveling to the past." Their deaths "leave Magnolia stranded in 2026 without a way to get home."
Magnolia is stuck in Kansas with her high school sweetheart, Fallon, and his brother, Ramsey, a "brooding militia commander who hunts and kills criminals like her."
The description for Broken Rival further teases, "Which brother can she trust, and is the real danger coming from inside the house?"
Tax Day Is Coming: Avoid These Costly Mistakes When You File
The deadline to file your 2025 income taxes is Wednesday, April 15. And while many people have already filed their paperwork, sent in their payments, or received their refunds, there are those of us who are still waiting to finish up (waives hand, in the role of a procrastinating freelance writer).
However, there are some common mistakes that many people make when filing. And while they range from little accounting errors to big boo-boos like forgotten payment details, these mistakes can definitely come back to haunt you after the deadline has passed. Keep reading to find out what they are and what you can do if you've made some of these common whoopsies.
Using the Wrong Filing StatusWhen you file, you will have a choice of different types of filing statuses to choose from. These options determine your tax rate, according to Fox News. Not only that, but this also helps determine which credits you can claim as well. When you pick the wrong one, you could limit the number of tax breaks you have access to, netting yourself a smaller refund.
Worried about whether or not you know which way to file? The IRS website has a filing status tool that will help you choose the right option. Already filed and realized your mistake. Great news, you can file an amended return to change your status.
Failing to Pay on TimeThey say there are only two certainties in life: Death and taxes. We know that the tax deadline falls on April 15th just about every year. And while the IRS does offer taxpayers the ability to request an extension so they can have more time to file their taxes, it does not allow you an extension to pay what you owe.
If you fail to send Uncle Sam the money you owe him by the tax deadline, you can be subject to expensive fees and penalties as a result. Not ready to pay and don't know how much you owe? Do your best to estimate your bill and send what you believe you will owe instead. If you are wrong and you end up owing more money, paying even a little bit up front will help offset those penalties and interest payments.
Already know you're going to miss that payment? Call the IRS and see if you can work out a payment plan. Some taxpayers will be able to set something up online, while others will need to call in and speak with a representative to get started.
Related: Apparently, the Future of Social Security Isn't All Doom and Gloom
Not Claiming All the Credits You CanMany of us file our own taxes to save a few bucks. However, tax pros are especially adept at ensuring that you get all of the credits you can when you file. Overlooking these credits or failing to take advantage of them can lead to a smaller refund in some cases and a larger bill in others.
This is going to be especially important to pay attention to this year, since there were a number of changes to the tax code thanks to the Trump administration's passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. That means the things that worked for you in the past may not work again this year, so this may be a good year to bring in the pros when it comes time to file your taxes.
Failed to take advantage of all the credits you should've? You can submit an amended tax return. According to the IRS, you can:
- Update your refund by filing an amended return within 3 years of filing the incorrect paperwork
- Update your payment by filing an amended return within 2 years after the date that the taxes were paid
For those with multiple jobs or income streams, it can be hard to keep track of all of the paperwork you'll need to file. Forgetting to include a W-2 or 1099 when you file your taxes can be costly, as it can fail to account for taxes you've already paid or even change your tax bracket by omitting income you've earned.
If you make this mistake, you can correct your income and tax status by filing an amended return once all of the paperwork is in.
Entering the Wrong Bank Account InfoNow, the potentially costliest mistake you can make is also one of the hardest ones to fix. If you end up putting the wrong bank account information in when you file, you could end up losing your refund or failing to pay your taxes on time. The ladder will obviously cost you in fees and penalties, which are very hard (if not impossible) to get waived.
Incorrectly entering bank info when you are owed money can delay payment, which can be frustrating, especially if you were looking forward to that refund. If you entered incorrect banking info into your account when you filed, you'll need to call the IRS to find out whether your payment was deposited into the wrong account and to provide the correct info to get things sorted.
