The British monarchy is over 1,000 years old. Although the current members, including King Charles, Queen Camilla, Prince William, and Kate Middleton, have been working to modernize the crown, there are plenty of strange royal traditions and protocols that still exist.
Queen Elizabeth II is the longest reigning monarch in British history, serving as the head of state for 70 years and 214 days until her death in September 2022 at the age of 96. Elizabeth did a lot to advance the monarchy, like embracing technology and pioneering the "royal walkabout" for direct public interaction. However, she was staunch in tradition and deeply invested in preserving the historic roots of the monarchy. In doing so, some interesting and strange royal traditions and protocols still remain. The Monarch Has Two BirthdaysThe reigning sovereign gets to celebrate their birthday twice, thanks to King Edward VII, Elizabeth’s great-grandfather. Trooping the Colour has been an event to celebrate the monarch’s birthday since 1748, but Edward didn’t like doing the famed even during his November birthday because of the unpredictable weather. He set the date for the event in the summer, and now Trooping the Colour is always the second Saturday in June.

Members of the Royal Family Cannot Sign AutographsThe monarch and immediate family members are prohibited from signing autographs in an effort to prevent forgery. However, Prince William and Prince Harry have been known to break this rule on occasion.
Annual Christmas Weigh-InKing Edward VII wanted proof his guests had eaten to their hearts' content on Christmas, so he would weigh them. Reportedly, it was ideal to gain at least three pounds after the multi-course feast.
Elizabeth maintained the tradition throughout her reign and every guest at Sandringham was required to step on an antique scale at the beginning and end of the Christmas celebration.

Ravens in the Tower of LondonLegend dictates that at least six ravens must be kept at the Tower of London at all times, and while it’s rooted in superstition, it is maintained as a royal decree.
During King Charles II’s reign, a prophecy was foretold: “If the Tower of London ravens are lost or fly away, the Crown will fall and Britain with it.”
The Tower currently hosts seven ravens to ensure the requirement is always met, and they are cared for by the Ravenmaster.

Sovereigns Don’t Need a License or a SeatbeltWhile the members of the royal family can drive, they are often chauffeured. The reigning monarch is not required to have a driver’s license or a passport, as these documents are issued in the sovereign’s name. The monarch is also not required to have a license plate on their car, nor do they have to obey the speed limit.
Swan UppingEvery July, a team of royal swan uppers spends five days looking for baby swans in the River Thames to mark them for the palace.

“The Crown has held the right to claim ownership of all unmarked mute swans swimming in open waters throughout the country from as far back as the twelfth century,” according to the U.K.’s government website. “Historically, valuable rights of ownership were subsequently granted by the monarch to many people and organisations as swans were a prized food, served at banquets and feasts. Today, of course, swans are no longer eaten and are a protected species.”
Separate Planes for Direct HeirsAccording to royal protocol, direct heirs are required to fly separately to ensure two heirs are not killed in a single accident. Prince William began flying on a different plane from his father, now-King Charles, when he turned 12, and royal watchers have wondered if Prince George will follow suit after turning 12 in July 2025.

A Kensington Palace spokesman previously told Cosmopolitan, "We don't comment on travel," when asked about George’s arrangements, but a former royal helicopter pilot recalled when William began flying on his own.
"Interestingly, we flew all four, the Prince [Charles], the Princess [Diana], Prince William and Prince Harry, up until Prince William was 12 years old. After that, he had to have a separate aircraft and we could only fly all four together when they were young with the written permission of Her Majesty,” the pilot recalled to Daily Mail. “When William became 12, he would fly normally in a 125 from Northolt and we would fly the 146 out with the other three on."
Always Pack the Color BlackBritish royals are technically allowed to wear black, although it is typically reserved for funerals and mourning. (Which made Princess Diana's iconic "revenge dress" all the more jaw-dropping.) However, it is a mandatory travel rule to bring a black outfit.

“They have to bring a black suit and tie, a dress or similar to be prepared if someone in the family dies while they’re away,” royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams told Reader’s Digest. “This is a rule that has been in place for over seven decades and is closely followed.”
Christmas Decoations Come Down in FebruaryThe royal family keeps their Christmas decorations up well into the new year. Queen Elizabeth kept Sandringham decorated until February 6th. The date marks the anniversary of her father King George VI's death at Sandringham in 1952. She was just 25 years old when he died and she ascended to the throne.

‘American Idol’ 2026 Results Tonight: Who Went Home and Who Made the Top 9?
American Idol continued its search for the next singing sensation as the Top 11 performed iconic hits from Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees as America voted live for the Top 9. Judge Carrie Underwood opened the show and got things rocking with a duet with Billy Idol of “Rebel Yell" accompanied by Steve Stevens. Both Billy and Steve are being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
The Top 11 were mentored by Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo, who also performed a medley of "Heartbreaker and "Ring of Fire," as inductees for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class of 2026 ceremony were revealed. They included Phil Collins, Joy Division/New Order Oasis, Sade, Luther Vandross, Wu-Tang Clan and Iron Maiden.
And Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie and Carrie were on hand to lend their voices to critique the Top 11 following their performances.
As previously announced, the American Idol app for voting has been replaced by social media (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok) voting. Text voting and online voting are still in place.

Box Office Smash Ranked No. 2 ‘Greatest Film of the Century’ Took 36 Years to Launch
In May 1986, Top Gun blasted into theaters, becoming an instant classic and the answer to a decade hungry for high-octane escapism. It would take another 36 years, however, before audiences would get another taste of soaring adrenaline.
Though the idea for a Top Gun sequel was approached in earnest in 2010, the project was delayed due to director Tony Scott’s death in 2012 and leading man Tom Cruise insisting on the proper time, story, and technology to do the original justice.
“Just through time, the story was never right,” Cruise told Total Film in 2022. The action hero went on to say that he and producer Jerry Bruckheimer were both perfectly happy keeping the sequel grounded until everything was perfect. That time came after Cruise worked with director Joseph Kosinski on the 2013 sci-fi romance film Oblivion.
“Joe had an idea for the movie,” Bruckheimer said. "And Tom loved the idea. And we loved it. So that’s where it all started.”
The announcement for Top Gun: Maverick came in 2017, with the film premiering at ComicCon on April 28 five years later. Following its theater release in May 2022, it became one of those rare cinematic feats where the sequel might just be better than the original.
Rotten Tomatoes seems to think so, as the second installment in the fighter pilot saga is ranked No. 2 on its list of “100 Greatest Movies of the 21st Century,” second only to Bong Joon Ho’s inimitable Parasite, and No. 20 on its list of the "300 Best Movies of All Time" (the original didn't even make the list).
Sitting at a near-perfect 96% critics' score and 99% audience rating, Maverick, which co-stars Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, and so many more familiar faces, was not just a box office smash; it's been credited with saving the movie theater industry altogether.
“You saved Hollywood’s a– and you might have saved theatrical distribution,” legendary director Steven Spielberg said to Cruise in a video originally shared on Instagram by director Kartiki Gonsalves. Per Variety, “Cruise was left blushing.”

It seems Mr. Lorenzo Lamas, 68, may be confirming the latest rumors that's he's currently romantically involved with Ms. Heather Locklear, 64. While Lamas doesn't officially confirm the relationship with Locklear in so many words, he does take to social media to share some gratitude, declarations about love, and a steamy photo together with Locklear.

Could Lamas be saying that he's been patiently waiting (since 1983?!) for this particular love story to unfold? Seems we're going to have to wait to find out how "truly amazing" everything is for the celebrity couple who've almost lived parallel lives, starting back in the early '80s.
Can't wait for the couple to step out together soon. Until then, all we keep imagining is Heather and Lorenzo hanging out looking like this. But we're not saying we hate it.

62 Years Ago Today, ’50s Icon Won His First Best Actor Award at the Oscars and Made History
Sixty-two years ago today marked more than just an Oscar ceremony , but a turning point in film history.
On April 13, 1964, Sidney Poitier, a Bahamian-American actor, had a career-defining moment at the 36th Academy Awards.
Born into humble beginnings, little did he know that his presence would one day mark a historic milestone in the cinematic arts.
The ’50s star took home his first-ever Oscar, winning Best Actor for his role in the film Lilies of the Field.
At the time, he was up against equally talented nominees, including Albert Finney in Tom Jones, Richard Harris in This Sporting Life, Rex Harrison in Cleopatra and Paul Newman in Hud.
Poitier’s stellar portrayal of the protagonist Homer Smith, a former GI and traveling handyman, brought him his first major award, further solidifying his presence in the entertainment industry.
Presented by Anne Bancroft, who appeared visibly moved as she read Poitier's name, the then-newly crowned Best Actor stepped onto the stage for his acceptance speech.

Poitier’s win is not only a personal achievement but also a historic one as he became the first Black actor to win the Academy Award for Best Actor. He broke barriers and set a new standard for generations of performers.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have landed in Australia for their four-day private trip full of engagements, and the Duchess of Sussex made a fabulous first impression before even landing down under.
Markle, 44, is slated to be the headline speaker for “Her Best Life” women’s wellness retreat in Sydney, Australia, which takes place from April 17-19. Gemma O’Neill, the co-host of the event and longtime manager of Australian TV and radio presenter Jackie O Henderson, gushed over her private Zoom call with Markle ahead of the girls’ weekend.

“I've literally just got off a Zoom with Meghan,” said O’Neill via Instagram on April 10. “It couldn't have been any more kind of real. I just immediately loved chatting to her.”

O’Neill called the Duchess “divine” and admitted she was “beside herself” over the partnership after respecting Markle’s resilience in the public eye over the years.

The Duke of Sussex is expected to be the keynote speaker at the InterEdge Summit on April 16, discussing workplace mental health and leadership. While the Australian walkabout looks like a royal tour, it is considered a private trip for Harry and Markle. They will be making visits to support philanthropic efforts, but they are also making paid appearances.

Mike Durrant could be heading home soon on Below Deck Down Under after exposing a major guest secret and then trying to cover his tracks with a lie.
Captain Jason Chambers is seen in the mid-season trailer telling someone, "Your behavior has forced my hand. I need you to leave the boat today." As guests leave service ratings on comment cards, learning that Mike lied to the primary could land him in serious hot water.
Primary guest Tyler planned to sneak his glam team onboard while the other guests were out on the water, so he could transform into a fully glammed drag queen. He insisted the plan stay under wraps—despite a flashback showing Daisy reading the request aloud from the preference sheet with the crew clearly within earshot.
But during lunch, as Tyler's team worked on him in his cabin, Mike joked with the guests that he was going to win "Tyler Paul's Drag Race" but then asked, "Was there a makeup artist on board I heard?" The guests look a little suspicious as one guest asks, "Did Tyler smuggle one on?"
Suddenly, the lights went on for Mike. "Oh God," he said in a confessional. "This is a big f---up." He asks Daisy if the guests know there was a makeup artist on board. "No, you didn't tell them," she replies, her eyes widening. As she realizes he's spilled the secret, Mike tries to defend himself by saying that no one told him to keep it a secret.
Cue the tape. A flashback shows the crew, including Mike, gathered around Daisy as she reads the preference sheet about how Tyler was keeping this surprise "under wraps" from the guests.
Daisy tells Mike, "The primary's going to be pissed when he finds out. I'm being dead serious, he's going to lose his s---."
Fast forward, Tyler confronts Mike, asking if he told the rest of the guests about his glam team. "Question... did you release the cat out of the bag that I had a makeup artist come on board?" Tyler asks Mike.
Mike stands there sweating and softly says, "No, wasn't me," with a smile on his face. Tyler reminds Mike that he told everyone not to say anything. "And now everyone's mad at me because I had a makeup artist come on board." But Mike claims to have no idea who said it.
"There's only one way to get away with this," Mike says in a confessional. "Deny, deny, and deny." Getting even further in the weeds, Mike tells Tyler that if he finds out who shared the secret with the rest of the guests, he'll let him know.
Mike may have forgotten he's on Below Deck, where everything is filmed. But time will tell if he's the one told to walk the plank.

Bestselling Author Fires Back at Fans Who Accused Her of Copying ‘Heated Rivalry’ Book Cover
Chelsea Curto, the bestselling author of the viral hockey romance novel Face Off, is shutting down accusations that she plagiarized Rachel Reid’s runaway hit Heated Rivalry.
The backlash began after Face Off—which Curto originally self-published in May 2024—was rereleased by Pan Macmillan in the U.K. on Thursday, April 9. Days later, an X user posted a photo of Face Off and Heated Rivalry sitting side by side on a bookstore shelf.
“Oh this is nasty,” the caption of the Sunday, April 12, post read, seemingly referring to the two novels’ similar covers.
In the comments section, others weighed in on the resemblance, with one person replying, “The cover art looks traced bro,” and another responding, “They just stole Rachel’s design btw.”
Another individual wrote, “She literally copied Heated Rivalry and made it straight and boring.”
However, other fans defended Curto as one person emphasized, “Face Off is actually a great book and [its cartoon cover] was published first too.”
After some social media users lashed out at Curto in response to the X post, a fan replied to the original poster, “You need to apologize to Chelsea for making people attack her.”
Curto herself chimed in on the controversy via her Instagram Stories on Sunday.
“I can’t believe I have to make this post, but I guess I do,” she wrote. “You can say anything you want about me, but plagiarism/cover tracing allegations are something I take very seriously. It’s so disheartening to see things shared without research being done.”
Curto went on to clarify the timeline of Face Off vs. Heated Rivalry’s animated covers.
“My incredible cover artist first designed these original covers for me back in early 2024 prior to release day in May 2024,” she explained. “I’m thrilled that the cover has stayed the same and that I get to work with her for the rest of my books! I’m so grateful for the talent, creativity and time she’s poured into this series for me, and I can’t wait to share the last two books with you soon!”
The following day, Curto returned to Instagram Stories to further detail the creation of Face Off and Heated Rivalry’s cartoon covers, noting that “watching words like ‘nasty’ and ‘thief’ and ‘blatant copying’ and ‘plagiarism’ tossed around makes me sick.”
“Face Off published in May 2024. The design for Face Off’s cover began in January 2024, 11 months prior to the rerelease of revamped paperback editions of a different hockey series (which came with new covers). That rerelease happened in November 2024,” she continued. “At the time of my cover design and publication, there was not an illustration or cover out there that featured the same poses/background as Face Off. My artist created original artwork, and I stand by that.”
Although Curto appreciated the passion of the Heated Rivalry fandom, she urged critics to be mindful of the impact of their words.
“I’m so happy to see the enthusiasm, attention and excitement from millions of long-time readers, new readers and TV watchers for an LGBTQ+ centered hockey universe. Frankly, we need more of it, and it’s encouraging and hopeful that a story like this reached mainstream media with the ferocity that it did,” she wrote. “With that ferocity comes a fandom willing to defend the thing they so preciously love and [rightfully] so. You want to make sure what you care about … is protected.”
She concluded: “I would caution people to remember within that excitement, it’s important and crucial to check facts before jumping to conclusions or forming opinions about other things that exist in the world. Again, the other cover was not available when Face Off published. I also haven’t had the chance to read the books that everyone is so excited about (I’ve barely read 10 books in the last year), but the last thing I’d ever, EVER do is take a story and ‘make it straight’ for my own benefit. That’s extremely harmful to a marginalized community I proudly support with my whole chest.”
Face Off is the first book in Curto’s DC Stars hockey romance series, which also includes the previously self-published Power Play, Slap Shot, Hat Trick and Sin Bin and the yet to be released Cross Check and Weak Side. In the U.S., the series is available via Kindle Unlimited.
Meanwhile, Reid began releasing her Game Changers book series in October 2018, though the new animated covers did not debut until November 2024. The six novels in the series—Game Changer, Heated Rivalry, Tough Guy, Common Goal, Role Model and The Long Game—experienced a resurgence following the November 2025 premiere of the breakout TV adaptation Heated Rivalry. Reid is set to release a seventh book titled Unrivaled in June 2027.
1969 No. 1 Hit Ranked Among 'Greatest Singles Ever Made' Topped the Charts Twice
It's a pretty major accomplishment for a song to make it all the way to the top of a single chart, just one time, but some hit tunes manage to climb multiple charts more than once.
Case in point: "I Can't Get Next to You." In 1969, the Temptations were looking for a new hit. It had been a few years since their last #1, "My Girl," and singer David Ruffin had parted ways with the group after conflicts with the other members and the record label.
But there was plenty more success in store, thanks in part to Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong, the songwriting duo behind Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine."
It was Whitfield and Strong who brought the Temptations back to number one with "I Can't Get Next to You," which topped both the Billboard Top Pop Singles chart (kicking "Sugar, Sugar" by the Archies from the #1 spot) and the Billboard Top R&B Singles chart (where it replaced "Oh, What a Night" by the Dells).
Featured in the book The Heart of Rock & Soul: The 1001 Greatest Singles Ever Made by Dave Marsh, "I Can't Get Next to You" is still considered a classic over half a century after it was first released.
"As an arrangement, the song is just mind-blowing," Stereogum's Tom Breihan wrote. "That crowd-applause intro and that slow piano suddenly, thrillingly explodes into a monstrous vamp. Drums and congas and tambourines shimmy away, and the guitar works as a drum, too, its fuzzed-out clicks working just like drum hits. All five Temptations trade off lead vocals, Eddie Kendricks' falsetto yip giving way to Paul Williams' miles-deep baritone, both of them sounding like special effects."
Perhaps unsurprisingly, "I Can't Get Next to You" has been covered by plenty of other artists, including Annie Lennox on her 1995 album Medusa.
The most famous non-Temptations version of the song, however, was released just a year after the original, in 1970, by the iconic singer Al Green. Green's take on the tune subsequently went to #11 on the Billboard R&B chart, establishing the song as a hit once again.

He just kind of belted out, 'Honey, why you calling me so late?' and we just kind of stopped and had this moment. We're like 'Oh, my God, that's what we have to write the song about.' And so we just sort of whipped it out real quick."

Alec Baldwin Says He Hopes to Retire and Focus on His Children After 'Rust' Tragedy
Alec Baldwin is ready to potentially step away from acting following the 2021 tragedy on the Rust set.
Baldwin was a guest on The Hollywood Reporter's podcast, Awards Chatter, on Monday, April 13. In the episode, he discussed spending time at home with his wife Hilaria Baldwin and their seven children following the accidental fatal shooting of Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
"I wound up staying home a lot. I was home with my kids for three and a half years," Baldwin said. "I hardly worked at all. And that's just changing now, I'm going to go off and do a bunch of things, but I was home and I got used to it, and I don't want to leave my house anymore. I don't. I don't want to work anymore. I don't. I really don't. I want to retire and stay home with my kids."
Baldwin was initially charged with involuntary manslaughter in 2023 for Hutchins' death but those charges were subsequently dropped. He was then faced with those same charges again in 2024 but they were dismissed with prejudice during his July 2024 trial. Baldwin shared how he coped with the aftermath of the shooting in his TLC series that aired in Feb. 2025.
“I don't know where I would be if I didn't have her,” Baldwin said of his wife Hilaria to People. "I don't know what would've happened to me.”
Baldwin also spoke about his large family with Hilaria on THR podcast.
"My kids are all born in Manhattan, same hospital, same doctor," Baldwin said. "And my son Romeo was there and we're picking clothes, they're picking out ski jackets back in November. And I go, 'Get that one, get that color. I like that one. Don't just get the black, get that one.' And he looks at me and goes, 'What do you know? You're from Long Island.' "
He added, "And that's my life now, day after day after day after day."

It’s not. It’s a good time. But it wasn’t a home run for a filmmaker who usually knocks teen comedies outta the park.
Critics agreed, with even those giving the film positive reviews sharing that they wanted more from the mind who delivered Sixteen Candles andThe Breakfast Club months earlier.
According to Variety, “Weird Science veers off into a typical coming-of-age saga without exploring any of the psychological territory it lightly sails over in the early going. … The film really goes nowhere with its central conceit.”
Showrunners Alan Cross (Veronica’s Closet, Dawson’s Creek) and Emmy winner Tom Spezialy (The Leftovers, Watchmen) saw Hughes’ sci-fi diamond in the rough, though, and sought expand on the dweebs-get-girls concept with their episodic retelling. This time, the writers gave Lisa, played by the striking Vanessa Angel, purpose.
Over time, Lisa shifts into a big sister role, guiding Gary (John Asher) and Wyatt (Michael Manasseri) through adolescence — and running the show while she’s at it. She’s not there just to be looked at; she’s the point. Her agency is what makes the series work, and her beauty is just a bonus.
If Hughes' Weird Science was just the "half-baked" rough draft, the USA series was surprisingly the outlet that made the A.

Psychologist Says if You Clean While You Cook, You Likely Have These 7 Traits
There's... quite a lot to worry about these days (which might be the understatement of the century?). Yet one psychologist shares that it's worth trying to understand how our traits and habits connect. For instance, people who clean while they cook may share common traits.
"When we understand the traits that shape our habits, we start treating behavior as information," explains Dr. Gayle MacBride, Ph.D., LP, a psychologist with Veritas Psychology. "Behaviors that become habits are usually developed for a reason, like efficiency, stress management or feeling more in control. Seeing the 'why' helps you decide what to keep, what works, what to adjust and what isn’t working."
Importantly, though, she says habits don't define us.
"But they can reveal a window into traits we possess and make up our personality," she shares. "Our values and priorities are often reflected in our behaviors and choices. We most often choose the thing(s) that help us feel better, like order, efficiency, comfort or a sense of control."
In other words, knowledge is power.
"Awareness gives you options," she explains. "Understanding our needs and being able to make in-the-moment choices about them lets you set yourself up for success. If you know you tend to get overwhelmed by clutter or you do better with structure, you can set up your environment to support you instead of feeling like you are constantly working with trial-and-error."
In other words, cleaning while you cook may support your needs. Yet Dr. MacBride also shares that it may not, especially if it leans into traits worth working on because they are holding you back. Below, she shares seven common traits of people who clean while they cook.
Quick caveat: "These are patterns, not diagnoses," Dr. MacBride says. "You cannot reliably type someone from one habit."
So, consider the below traits of people who clean while they cook within the broader context of your life, including other habits, strengths and pain points. From there, you can decide whether cleaning and cooking at the same time is a habit worth keeping (or nixing).

A habit of tidying while you cook isn't necessarily a problem to fix and can have a ton of benefits. Dr. MacBride says cleaning while you cook can:
- Make it easier to get back into the kitchen when the meal is done.
- Let you enjoy the meal rather than thinking about cleaning up for dessert.
- Help you feel calmer and more organized.
- Help you avoid cross-contamination and kitchen accidents (such as from spills).
That said, even this seemingly "good" habit can have its pitfalls.
"If you start to focus on keeping things clean while you cook, that can become the priority, pulling attention away from the food, which sometimes leads to mistakes or burned meals," Dr. MacBride shares.
She states that one of her personal pet peeves is cleaning something that she winds up needing again.
"It can also create tension in shared kitchen spaces if one person is cleaning as they go and the other person wants to wait until the end of the project," she adds.

7 Traits of People Who Clean as They Cook, According to a Psychologist 1. They're conscientiousDr. MacBride says that people who clean while they cook often value follow-through and responsibility. Their habit is aligned with these values.
"This habit supports a sense of keeping things handled, especially if there is a sense that the kitchen is a shared space," she says.

2. They're sensitive to being overwhelmedA touch of spilled sauce on a counter or a mountain of pots and pans in the sink can trigger people.
"Some people experience clutter or mess as extremely distracting," Dr. MacBride explains. "Taking a moment to tidy up helps them stay focused and reduces irritability."
3. They're orderly and prefer sequencesDr. MacBride reveals that cleaning while cooking reinforces the step-by-step nature of a recipe. When you think about it, she makes a valid point, and these preferences for sequences can appeal to certain individuals.
"People who think in systems may be more linear thinkers," she explains. "These people will more naturally finish one step and then prepare the space for the next step."

4. They have high sensitivity to time pressurePeople who are inclined to wipe down the kitchen while they whip something up may value a "job well done."
"Emphasis on the 'done,'" Dr. MacBride shares.
She explains that, for some people, cleaning as they go is an exercise in time management.
"They often rely on the 'touch it once' belief and would prefer to put it away or at least in the wash rather than setting it down only to have to pick it up again," she says.

5. They're efficientOften, people who clean as they prep in the kitchen are the ones you can count on to meet a deadline, even under pressure. They can also often juggle multiple stressors, like working while raising a young family.
"They are likely to look for ways to combine tasks, like letting something simmer while loading the dishwasher," Dr. MacBride states. "The trait here is about using small pockets of time well."
6. They think strongly about their 'future selves'Some people know how to treat their future selves like royalty.
"Some people clean as they cook because they are thinking about a moment in time they haven’t experienced yet, like tomorrow morning, the next meal or even the next person who uses the kitchen." Dr. MacBride notes.
She adds that, by getting cleaning out of the way, these people reduce future stress.
7. They're prone to nervousness/anxious thoughtsDr. MacBride says actions, like cleaning while cooking, can help some people who find taking action or control useful for nervous system regulation.
"One way people deal with this kind of stress is by doing something concrete and visible," she explains. "This can give us a bit of a dopamine hit, which is a 'feel good' hormone and maybe offsets spikes of cortisol from the stress."

Can Cleaning Be a Trauma Response?Sometimes, cleaning (such as while cooking) can be a trauma response.
"If someone grew up in a home where mess triggered criticism, conflict or unpredictability, cleanliness can become tied to safety and emotional survival," Dr. MacBride states. "That said, cleaning is also a normal preference and a practical habit, so we look for the emotional driver, not just the behavior."
If you want to determine whether or not cleaning while you cook is a positive habit, the psychologist suggests asking yourself: “Does this help me function?” and “Do I feel compelled?”
"Helpful habits feel supportive," she says. "Compulsive habits feel urgent and hard to stop, even when you want to."
If anxiety is driving it, Dr. MacBride suggests practicing taking a brief pause and a slow breath. Then, ask yourself, “What am I afraid will happen if I leave this until later?"

'America's Next Top Model' Miss J. Alexander Celebrates 68th Birthday on 1st Red Carpet Since 2022 Stroke
Beloved runway coach and America's Next Top Model (ANTM) judge Miss J. Alexander, 68, is back out on the red carpet. Alexander showed out for his 68th birthday at the opening night of the musical Titanique on Broadway on Sunday, April 12. This is Miss J's first red carpet outing since revealing he suffered a stroke back in 2022.
Always fashion forward but keeping it low-key, Miss J wore a turquoise shirt with colorful constellations and botanicals and wide-leg jeans for the event at the St. James Theater in New York City. He accessorized with superstar shades and a lovely plaid scarf. Although the show took place on his birthday night, there were no balloons or tiaras in sight.

J. Alexander only recently revealed that he suffered a stroke in December 2022, which resulted in a five-week coma and temporary paralysis. At the February 2026 airing of the Netflix docuseries Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model, Miss J let fans in on the health crisis and his ongoing recovery.
“I spent five weeks in a coma … I couldn’t walk, and I couldn’t talk,” he says in the doc. “And I thought to myself, ‘What was I going to do?’ ”
Miss J. Alexander was a steady joyful presence on ANTM, serving as the main runway coach and a judgefrom its debut in 2003 until 2012. He was always spicy and telling it to the models straight as he pep talked them down the runway. One of his well-known coaching lines was: "Walk like it's for sale and the rent is due tonight."
