Eagles' "Hotel California" peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in May 1977 and has never left classic rock radio. Don Henley has said it's about the dark underbelly of the American dream. The band has given different answers at different times. In 2026, the Eagles completed their final Sphere shows in Las Vegas, and "Hotel California" was the star every night. Nobody still agrees what it means. Every kid who heard it on the way to school knew something was off before they could explain what.

The opening guitar is warm and inviting. The rhythm pulls you in. And somewhere in the first verse, the uneasiness arrives. "Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes bends." "They stab it with their steely knives, but they just can't kill the beast." Children felt the wrongness before they understood the words. They were picking up something real.

The song didn't start in a recording studio. Don Felder was sitting on the couch at a rented Malibu beach house in 1976 when the chord progression came to him. He hurried to the back bedroom and recorded a demo using a Rhythm Ace drum machine and a 12-string guitar on a four-track deck. He gave the cassette to DonHenley and GlennFrey. It was one of 15 demo songs he'd made for the album. Felder said: "Truthfully, at the time, Hotel California was just another song on the cassette. I didn't necessarily think it was the best song."

Henley drove around Los Angeles by himself listening to the cassette. He called the riff "that one that sounds like Mexican reggae." Joe Walsh joined the Eagles specifically for this album. When the band recorded the guitar solos in Miami, Felder realized he'd left the original cassette recording back in Malibu. He had to call his housekeeper, have her find it and play it into the phone so he could learn the parts note for note. The most famous guitar outro in classic rock was learned from a cassette that a housekeeper played over the phone.

Then they had to decide what the song meant. That decision has never been fully resolved.

Henley's most consistent explanation is that the hotel is about America itself: the promise of a paradise that turns into a trap. "It's basically a song about the dark underbelly of the American dream and about excess in America," he said, "which is something we knew about." The Eagles weren't just observing excess. They were describing something they'd experienced.

Then came the satanism rumors. Anton LaVey of the Church of Satan was rumored to appear on the album cover's balcony. The Eagles denied it. The drug addiction interpretation arrived next. The most analyzed line in the song is also its simplest: "You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave." Henley says it refers to the inescapable reality of the American dream. Others hear addiction. Others hear something darker. The line works because all three readings are simultaneously possible.

Fifty Years Later It's Still Playing and Still Unexplained

In March 2026, the Eagles completed their final Sphere Las Vegas residency shows with "Hotel California" as the centerpiece of every performance. A dedicated SiriusXM Hotel California channel aired through June 5, 2026, on channel 105 featuring Don Henley, Joe Walsh, Timothy B. Schmit, Deacon Frey and Vince Gill. An Australian tribute tour performing Hotel California in its entirety was announced in March 2026 to mark the 50th anniversary.

Hotel California is certified 26 times Platinum. It's the third best-selling album in US history. Their greatest hits and their greatest mystery are separated by one chart position. The 50th anniversary arrives in 2027. Don Felder's unforgettable cassette riff is still the first thing you hear and the last thing you'll ever forget.

After President Kennedy's assassination in 1963, she displayed incredible grace in the face of unimaginable tragedy. In her landmark interview with Life magazine journalist Theodore H. White, she helped shape her husband's legacy by comparing his presidency to Camelot, recalling the lyric, "Don't let it be forgot, that once there was a spot, for one brief shining moment that was known as Camelot."

Her extraordinary ability to bring comfort and strength during the nation’s darkest hours was remembered by Senator Ted Kennedy during his eulogy for his sister-in-law in 1994. “And then, during those four endless days in 1963, she held us together as a family and a country,” he said. “In large part because of her, we could grieve and then go on. She lifted us up, and in the doubt and darkness, she gave her fellow citizens back their pride as Americans. She was then 34 years old."

Rather than retreating from public life, Kennedy continued a life devoted to service. She became a highly respected book editor, first at Viking Press and later at Doubleday, where she championed acclaimed authors, collaborated with some of the publishing world's most respected writers and helped bring important books to readers for nearly two decades.

She also became one of America's leading preservationists, playing an instrumental role in the successful campaign to save New York City's Grand Central Terminal from a redevelopment plan that threatened one of the nation's greatest architectural treasures. For Kennedy, preserving history was never simply about protecting old buildings. In a 1975 letter urging New York City officials to save Grand Central Terminal, she wrote, "If they are not inspired by the past of our city, where will they find the strength to fight for her future?" It was a philosophy she lived every day—one rooted in the belief that history gives purpose to the future.

Her devotion to excellence also left a lasting impression on those who knew her best. As her daughter, Caroline Kennedy, said, "My mother believed that if something is worth doing, it's worth doing well."

Elizabeth Hurley reveals her first impression of Miley Cyrus.   

The 61-year-old actress revealed on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live that she thought she would get along with Cyrus before she was romantically involved with her father, BillyRay Cyrus.

“She’s adorable,” the actress shared during a recent appearance on the radio show.   

“I’ve been lucky to meet some of his kids and they seem fabulous,” Hurley said. 

Billy Ray has six children. He shares Christopher Cody Cyrus with KristinLuckey. His five other children, NoahCyrus, Miley Cyrus, TraceCyrus, BrandiCyrus, and BraisonCyrus, were with his ex-wife, TishCyrus. 

Cohen asked Hurley if she and the Disney album had met before she started Billy Ray. 

“No, I’d never met her, but my son used to love Hannah Montana, so he loved Father Montana,” she said. The sitcom ran between 2006 and 2011 for a total of four seasons. 

“He loved Miley too, so I always knew who she was, and when he was a young teen, he used to love all her music.” 

The Bedazzled actress has one child, DamianHurley, whom she shares with businessman SteveBing. 

“I used to have to watch her music videos, like ‘Wrecking Ball,’ a zillion times with him, so we were very familiar with who she was, and I knew I was going to like her and I do like her,” Hurley shared. 

Hurley and Billy Ray confirmed their relationship with a shared Instagram post in April 2025. They posted a photo of them kissing on Easter. The couple first met while filming a Christmas movie in 2022.

Miley Cyrus shared her thoughts about seeing her parents date other people in an interview with The New York Times.

“I think timing is everything. As I’ve gotten older, I’m respecting my parents as individuals instead of as parents — because my mom really loved my dad for her whole life, and I think being married to someone in the music industry and not being a part of it is obviously really hard,” she shared.

Connections Sports Edition is just like the regular Connections word puzzle, in that it's a game that resets at 12 a.m. EST each day and has 16 different words listed. It's up to you to figure out each group of four words that belong to a certain category, with four categories in total.

This new version is sports-specific, however, as a partnership between The New York Times and The Athletic.

As the NYT site instructs, for Connections Sports Edition, you "group sports terms that share a common thread."

Faith Hill and Tim McGraw have spent decades performing together, but one 2007 concert became memorable for a reason that had nothing to do with the music.

During a July 28, 2007, stop of the couple’s Soul2Soul II Tour at the Cajundome in Lafayette, Louisiana, McGraw, 59, was finishing his set when a female fan reached toward him as he walked between the stage and barricade, greeting concertgoers. According to reports at the time, the woman grabbed McGraw in the crotch area.

McGraw, then 40, reportedly reprimanded the woman before leaving the area. But the situation wasn't over.

When McGraw and Hill, 58, returned for the encore, Hill addressed the fan from the stage.

"Someone needs to teach you some class, my friend," Hill said, according to CBS News and The Hollywood Reporter. She then made it clear that the behavior had crossed a line, adding,

"That’s very disrespectful."

The moment was caught on video and quickly spread online. At the time, viral videos were still a relatively new phenomenon, but the footage made its way across websites and YouTube almost immediately.

"Within an hour, that video made it around the world," C.J. Clement, a Lafayette radio host, said at the time.

The incident also sparked plenty of conversation about where the line should be drawn when fans interact with performers.

Hill later explained that she hadn't actually witnessed the initial grab. McGraw found her backstage before the pair were scheduled to perform their final segment and told her what had happened. According to Hill, he was "livid" and "red and fuming."

At first, Hill said she decided not to give the fan any additional attention.

But that changed when she saw the woman again.

During a September 2007 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Hill explained that the woman gave her a look that made her feel as though the fan believed there was nothing Hill could do about what had happened. That, Hill said, changed her mind.

"I’m from Mississippi, so what I really wanted to do is kick her you-know-what," Hill said on the show. She also described the incident as sexual harassment and questioned how people would react if the genders were reversed.

The confrontation became one of the more talked-about moments from the couple’s 2007 Soul2Soul II Tour, which was a major success.

Bret Michaels, the iconic vocalist of the 1980s glam metal band Poison, delivered an unexpected change to his solo concert tour.

Following surgery last week amid hisLive & Amplified 2026 Tour, the 63-year-old musician was forced to put his upcoming schedule on hold to help him recover.

In a social media post, the rock star’s team updated fans on Michaels’ current health status following his surgery to remove the kidney stone after he experienced “intense” pain that he had been dealing with for a whole week.

However, as he focuses on his recovery, he has been advised to rest for “three to four weeks,” forcing him to postpone his remaining shows in July and August.

“Due to the nature of Michaels’ post-operative condition and underlying health factors (diabetes and lower back compression fracture), he is restricted from performing for the next 3 to 4 weeks and only prescribed light physical activity as part of his recovery,” the post reads.

Since the procedure required doctors to insert a small tube between his kidney and bladder, which can cause ongoing internal irritation, the singer is expected to experience discomfort and swelling that would make performing unsafe.

“The physical demands of Bret’s high-intensity live performances exacerbate these symptoms. Strenuous physical exertion carries a high risk of intense pain spikes, gross hematuria, and acute stent displacement, which would require immediate medical intervention,” the statement continued, including a message from Michaels’ physician, Dr. Abby Borhan, who noted, “He must strictly refrain from all live performances until we re-evaluate his condition in 3 to 4 weeks to determine when he can safely resume touring.”

As for the award-winning vocalist, he expressed his deep gratitude to the medical team, his family, his band, his crew and fans for “understanding.”

Moreover, Michaels also hinted at getting back on the road soon while promising high-energy performances.

“I’m forever grateful for the amazing medical treatment and ongoing medical attention throughout my personal life and career, and truly grateful for family, friends, fans, band, crew and promoters for their understanding and, if all goes well, will hit the road late August back to delivering 1000% energy, intensity and truly nothing but a good time,” he said.

Earlier this month, the "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" hitmaker continued his solo Live & Amplified 2026 Tour and completed three shows in Charleston, West Virginia on July 10, followed by a July 11 concert in Grantville, Pennsylvania and a private performance for military heroes and families in Spokane, Washington on July 18.

After the performance, “the pain became too much” and was admitted to the hospital.

“The operation has been done and is complete,” Michaels said in a July 22 Facebook post. “I’m out of post-op recovery, and I’m doing everything within my power to feel better and continue playing great shows for great fans when I’ve got a complete clean bill of health.”

As for his upcoming schedule, the iconic singer was originally slated to perform two more shows in July followed by a nine-date run in August.

Rewind 20 years, and residents of certain states might recall tailgating summer concerts thrown by the same batch of artists.

Names like Dave Matthews and John Mayer could come to mind — even the rock outfit known as O.A.R. Cut to 2026, the band has just returned to the spotlight.

O.A.R. officially kicked off their highly anticipated Three Decades Tour this weekend, launching a milestone summer run that aims to celebrate "30 years of music, memories and the community the band has built with fans across generations," according to a Monday, July 27 news release.

There’s something special about being together at these shows. You can feel that collective energy, like we’re all ready for some good times.”

A particularly meaningful stop came Friday night in Maryland, bringing O.A.R. back to the state where their story began in 1996. Formed while its members were still in high school in Rockville, the band has grown from playing local shows to building one of rock’s most enduring careers.

The Three Decades Tour continues throughout the summer and brings O.A.R. to venues across the country, with Gavin DeGraw, Lisa Loeb, KT Tunstall and Phantom Planet joining the tour as support.

MattDamon is leaving fans shocked by his physical transformation in the 2026 box office hit The Odyssey. 

The 55-year-old actor dedicated hours and hours of training to portray Odysseus with incredible strength, and it shows. Damon’s long-time trainer Jason Walsh spoke to The Independent about his process. 

“I love Matt Damon so much,” Walsh said. “He’s all over the news right now, and rightfully so –The Odyssey is an incredible film by an incredible director. He’s 55 years old and he looks fantastic. But there’s a bigger story here than just [his physique in] The Odyssey.”

He started working with the actor in 2012 after a previous sports injury caused issues with Damon's shoulder and back. 

Damon was retaining weight from his work in The Informant, for which he raised his body fat percentage with a Burger King-heavy diet. His family began calling him “Fatty Matty”. 

“At that time, he was disenchanted and upset because he had worked out with a dozen different trainers, but at forty-something years old he was in shambles,” Walsh explained. “These people were trying to impress him. They would promise to get him from nought to 60 faster than anybody else, and they made him do things that his body wasn't ready for.”

The We Bought a Zoo actor gave the fitness professional a two-week trial period. They’ve been working together ever since. 

“We took him from Fatty Matty to incredible shape for Elysium," he said. "But what I’m most proud of is that I gave him a new lease of life in a way in which he can live pain-free."

Adding, “He was strong. He looked good. And he had built an amazing foundation of fitness so he could go anywhere he wanted to go. This is the new norm for him. We set him on a path to better fitness for life.” 

The duo knew getting into shape for The Odyssey was going to be difficult. 

“[Odysseus was] an extremely daunting and physical role to take on,” Walsh shared. “If he didn’t have that base and that evolution of his fitness, he would probably have got hurt.”

But while most people were kind enough to rewind and return their tapes, some didn’t even bother. Especially when it came to a certain Happy Madison production, which disappeared more than any other: Grandma’s Boy.

“Nick Swardson, one of the film’s co-writers, claimed that he and Sandler met the CEO of Blockbuster, telling [the podcast] Stiff Socks that they were made aware of the fact that Grandma’sBoy was ‘one of their most stolen movies of all time,’” Far Out magazine wrote.

“No one ever returned the movie,” Swardson relayed on the podcast.

​Swardson, who also stars in the film as Jeff, the friend of a 35-year-old video game tester whose recent eviction forces him to move in with his grandmother and her two elderly, eccentric roommates, added that while making the stoner comedy, he knew it would “bomb” in theaters but more than make up for the failure with its DVD/VHS release. And he was right on the money.

Grossing just $6.6 million at the box office, the film cleaned up months later when it became available in physical form, with Far Out reporting $35 million in DVD revenue and Swordson claiming on the podcast that home-video sales ultimately climbed much higher.

Released in January 2006, Grandma’s Boy was directed by Nicholaus Goossen (Happy Gilmore 2) and produced by Adam Sandler. It stars Shirley Jones, Linda Cardellini, Shirley Knight, Doris Roberts, Jonah Hill, and Happy Madison alums Kevin Nealon and Peter Dante. Still, no amount of star power could keep the film from falling into the jaws of critics who pummeled the effort.

But for home video enthusiasts, however, the film took on a new life. Apparently, they couldn’t get enough of its cheap gags, shock humor, and dialed-up stereotypes.

“Clearly, in the mid-2000s, people couldn’t stop stealing DVDs of Grandma’s Boy, and now, I’m sure you can find a copy in your local charity shop bargain bin,” Far Out joked.

Twenty years later, Grandma’s Boy has become a cult classic, with its quotable one-liners and dumb-comedy chaos resonating with gamer and stoner subcultures, and beyond. There’s even a whole podcast episode of The Confused Breakfast dedicated to the hangout buddy comedy.

“On today’s brand new episode, we discuss perhaps one of the most quoted movies of the 2000s,” the episode's synopsis reads. “Barely grossing $6 million in its original theatrical release, this film made over $50 million in DVD sales alone. In fact, the CEO of Blockbuster has gone on record calling it the most stolen movie of all time because it was never voluntarily returned. We are, of course, talking about 2006’s Grandma’s Boy.”
