There is absolutely no shortage of excellent vampire novels. Dracula by Bram Stoker is often considered the best, and it’s had plenty of adaptations of the story. The most recent came straight from one small section of the book, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, telling the story of how Dracula made it to London.

However, while it is popular, it turns out that Goodreads users love a particular Stephen Kinghorror instead. The 1975 book ‘Salem’s Lot stands out as the one to read, although the ranking is close. When looking at “Best Adult Vampire Novels” on Goodreads, there is only around a 500-point score difference between the two of them.

‘’Salem’s Lot’ Focuses on Facing the Past

‘Salem’s Lot by King was written in 1975, telling the story of second chances as well as facing the past. A man and a boy have to go back to ‘Salem’s Lot, facing the untold horror of the small town.

This is pure horror at its finest. Yes, there has been debate over the genre King writes now, but going back to his older stories, you can see where his heart lies. There’s plenty of inspiration taken from Dracula and other vampire mythology throughout the book, but King also adds his own tension and art of storytelling to create a darker picture that will take out the romance when it comes to these creatures.

The Town Is Creepier Than the Vampires

We all know that vampires are dangerous and twisty. There are plenty of books that focus on that, and sure, there are mentions of that. However, it’s the town of ‘Salem’s Lot that is the creepiest part of the novel.

Monsters I get, but humans not so much, and that’s what King has always taught me. It’s what this book delves further into, and many a reader has picked up on that. It’s clear that this is one of the inspirations taken from Dracula. After all, Stoker’s novel is focused on the creepiness of the situation and not the vampire lore itself.

‘Salem’s Lot has been adapted into multiple live-action films and shows. The first was in 1979 with a two-part miniseries, another miniseries in 2004, and then the movie in 2024. Out of all, the 1979 adaptation is considered the best, although the 2004 adaptation is faithful to the book descriptions.

Spirited Away has a score of 96 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie grossed a total of $360,187,480 world-wide, per Box Office Mojo.

Hayao Miyazaki Shared Behind-the-Scenes Details About 'Spirited Away'

Viewers of Spirited Away watched a girl named Chihiro navigate a confusing spirit world. In a behind-the-scenes interview, Miyazaki confirmed Chihiro was inspired by his friend's child.

"She's kind of a lazy bum, which is how my favorite 10-year-old girls are. 'You are a lazy bum,' I want to tell them, but there inner resources are as rich as Chihiro," said the director, who also wrote the film.

Chihiro is not the only Spirited Away character grounded in reality. According to the film's producer, Toshio Suzuki, No Face is based on actual men.

"In my experience, many of the characters portray and contain positive elements of the men Miyazaki saw. No Face is desperate to enter somehow into the hearts of others, but really doesn't have the ways or means to do so," said Suzuki.

Miyazaki also said children have a deep understanding of the film, despite its fantastical nature. He pointed to the scene wherein Haku instructs Chihiro not to breathe on the bridge to remain hidden.

"This film is fantasy. It is a complete fabrication. But within that context of the fabricated reality, I feel like I didn't lie to the kids. These arbitrary, imaginary rules, like holding her breath and her life depends on it, you know, it rings terribly true to children, but not to adults," said Miyazaki, now 85.

Florida has long been a dreamy retirement destination for America's seniors thanks to a number of reasons. And while just about everyone knows that The Sunshine State is where many people head to once they start that next chapter of their lives, many of us don't think about where these people are coming from when they move.

You may be surprised to learn that three states are being left behind by retirees. I spoke with two retirement pros to talk about which states retirees seem to be quick to leave behind, and if I'm being completely honest, the reason why these states aren't great for older Americans isn't exactly surprising.

Illinois

Unfortunately, for those living in Illinois, the state isn't exactly a great place to live on a fixed income, according to George Dimov, CPA, Founder, and CEO of Dimov Tax. It's all about taxes.

"Illinois does not tax the money people get when they retire. This means that Illinois does not tax pensions, Social Security, or the money people take out of their 401(k) accounts," he explains, adding that the way the state taxes retirement income should be a huge draw to people this age. However, it's real estate taxes that are killing seniors on fixed incomes, and he says many people are finding themselves priced out of their neighborhoods after retirement.

"The taxes on homes in Illinois are very high around 2.1 percent of the value of the home," he says. "So, if you have a house worth four hundred thousand dollars, you will have to pay around eight thousand four hundred dollars in taxes every year for the rest of your life." Dimov says clients have told him they are selling their homes in Illinois because their property tax bills keep going up while their income stays the same. So, where are they heading instead? "Most of these people are moving to Florida or Tennessee," Dimov continues. "Some are moving to Indiana, where the property taxes are less than half of what they are in Illinois."

New Jersey

New Jersey is my neighbor to the east, so I'm pretty aware of how expensive things can get in The Garden State, and I was already clued in that they tax a portion of your retirement benefits here if they exceed a certain amount.

But, as in Illinois, Dimov says retirees are struggling to keep up with those real estate taxes once they retire, especially since they are among the highest in the country at 2.2 percent.

Apparently, retirees are also constantly required to prove they still reside in New Jersey after retirement. "The big problem in New Jersey is that the state is very aggressive about checking if people really live there," Dimov says. "If retirees move to Florida but keep their house in New Jersey for the summer, the state will often check to see if they are really residents of New Jersey."

Dimov says that he has seen the state use all sorts of information to prove that someone is a resident, including highway toll records, cell phone use records, and records of doctor visits. "The only way to really leave New Jersey is to sell your home and move away completely."

California

Real estate taxes and cost of living create a perfect storm for California retirees, according to Michael G. Branson, CEO at All Reverse Mortgage. "California is the one that comes up most consistently in retirement migration conversations. "The combination of high income tax on retirement distributions, elevated property taxes in many areas, and a cost of living that makes fixed income stretch thin has been pushing retirees out for years," Branson says.

"The numbers from the IRS migration data and U-Haul demand consistently point to California as a net exporter of retirees," he continues, noting that most of them are heading to Arizona, Nevada, and Texas. "Nevada has no state income tax and lower property taxes. Arizona offers similar tax advantages with a warmer climate and significantly lower housing costs, particularly in the Phoenix suburbs and Tucson." Meanwhile, he adds that Texas has no state income tax either, and while property taxes are higher than people expect, the overall cost of living and housing affordability still beat California by a significant margin.

Of course, as with all things retirement, everyone's situation is different. And while these states may be harder for some to get by in once they retire, others see these regions as dream locations for their golden years.

The investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance could be entering a critical new phase, as attention turns to whether the FBI’s advanced forensic resources may help unlock long-standing questions in the case. A few days ago, ABC News reported that DNA obtained from Guthrie's home was sent to the FBI after spending several weeks being tested at a lab in Florida. Although the DNA isn't a new finding, many hope that the FBI is able to get a positive match in order to potentially identify a suspect in the case.

Following the news, Parade reached out to former FBI agent Greg Rogers for some insight into how long the process can take.

"The FBI lab is the best in the country," Rogers says. "A high priority case like this is prioritized and results can come back in a matter of days. We also have contacts in Mexico that will be utilized to further investigate any solid DNA testing results."

"The FBI lab has certain DNA testing capabilities that most local labs don’t, such as nuclear DNA, Y-chromosome DNA, and mitochondrial DNA. Those tests are often used on shed hair fragments which are an issue in the Guthrie case," he continues, referring to the report that the piece of hair doesn't contain the root.

"The FBI’s unique combination of the CODIS database, specialized testing, and national and international coordination give it the preeminent roll in working these types of cases," Rogers added.

Guthrie, 84, was last seen on Saturday, January 31. Authorities have not publicly identified any suspects in the case.

According to snack father @markie_devo, Papa John's is set to release its garlic sauce at major retailers nationwide in convenient 14-ounce squeeze bottles. This is not a drill. Not only does that mean we won't have to tack on several extra one-ounce sauce cups to our pizza order, but now we can use the legendary garlic sauce in a variety of other ways, like folding it into focaccia dough or using it as a boost for our homemade Alfredo sauce. Someone even suggested using it in place of butter on popcorn.

Thrall does have a relationship, but it’s not your stereotypical vampire/human relationship that we’ve seen in the likes of The Vampire Diaries and Twilight. Yes, Buffy had its own, but there were rules in place and it’s not like these relationships could last. Thrall breaks away from it all.

The relationship is one that’s cute and young. Lucy immediately gets a crush on one of her RAs, Mila, and they end up getting to know each other rather well when it turns out that the secrets about vampires aren’t completely secret.

I don’t want to give away spoilers here, but it’s a genuine LGBTQ+ relationship that we need to see in novels. This isn’t something where characters are rushing in head first with their feelings. They have to think pragmatically as well as romantically, but you do find yourself rooting for them as the story progresses.

My favorite thing is that there's not a constant thought of a potential relationship. Sometimes, whether it's LGBTQ+ or not, the relationship can start to take over. Lucy is a 23-year-old college student, so not as ruled by her emotions as a 16-year-old high school student would be, and that's the way it's written. Sure, she has fleeting thoughts, but survival and figuring out how to protect the campus end up more important, and that's the way it should be.

There’s also a story of female friendship, which is another important element of fiction in today’s world. Natalie, another RA, develops into someone I just didn’t expect her to be on a college campus — and in an excellent way. She proves what it means to be a woman supporting other women. There’s no competition or one-upman-ship. Instead, we see friendships that form partially out of trauma but also organically in an inspirational way.

‘Thrall’ Is a YA ‘Dracula’

The best way that I can describe this story is that it brings the heart of Dracula out. For the longest time, vampires have become this alluring creature that humans want to date. It’s a problem within the YA space.

Mahoney is able to break away from that in an organic way. She reminds us of the vampires of Dracula, where they’re alluring but not date-worthy. There is something mesmerizing, and there is lore around that, but that doesn’t mean Lucy is immediately romantically attracted to him. She is still herself, and she still has the sexual attraction she’s always had.

That being said, there’s an alluring take on the people this vampire attacks. He picks his prey for reasons initially only he understands. It’s only as we delve into other people he has taken and who they are that we get to see the full connection — and why they are so easily lured in the deep end, while Lucy focuses on fighting.

Splicing the Radio Transcripts Is a Great Touch

Throughout the novel, we get transcripts from the radio station that’s mentioned. Pallas Radio knows all about the vampire lurking around campus, although she doesn’t use that term on the radio. She calls him the “friend with cold hands” or something similar to that.

Most people view the radio station as a work of fiction, but there are others who believe her. They know the truth, because they’ve seen it or they’ve been affected by it, and the station helps to bring everyone together.

We get to see how callers help with details for the “Friend,” somewhat showing instead of just telling us what people said. I would have loved to hear it be part of the main story instead of having transcripts to break up sections, but I’m not sure how that would have been possible considering everything is told through Lucy’s POV. We learn and see what she does.

The ending is the perfect twist for the radio station and for a potential future to the book. This doesn’t have to be a standalone story. In fact, I think there needs to be a sequel to see what becomes of certain vampires and humans.

Thrall will be available on shelves on April 21, 2026.

Former Days of Our Lives star Stephen Schnetzer is opening up about why he left the long-running soap opera during its early years.

In a recent interview with Jim Masters on his YouTube series The Jim Masters show, Schnetzer discussed his career across television, film, and theater, including his work in both New York City and Los Angeles.

During the conversation, Schnetzer reflected on his time on Days of Our Lives, where he portrayed Steve Olson, the brother of Julie Williams (Susan Seaforth Hayes) appearing in 115 episodes between 1978 and 1980.

Schnetzer explained that he was not under contract at the time, which gave him flexibility to pursue other opportunities. When a stage role became available, he decided to take it. “Franco Zeffirelli was holding auditions for replacements of a big success in the west end, a play called Filumena starring Joan Plowright and Frank Finley,” he said, noting the production planned a small run before moving to Broadway.

After auditioning, Schnetzer was cast in the production. “So, I gave my notice at Days of Our Lives, and went back to New York, and went on to Broadway in that play,” he recalled.

When the production moved to Broadway, Zeffirelli stepped away as director and was replaced by Laurence Olivier. Schnetzer described the experience as getting “two for the price of one,” having worked with both acclaimed figures.

Although Filumena ran for 32 performances on Broadway, the experienced opened new doors. While in New York, casting director Mary Jo Slater invited Schnetzer to audition for One Life to Live. “I was there for a couple of years under contract,” he said.

He went on to play Marcello Salta on One life to Live from 1980 to 1982 before transitioning to Another World, where he originated the role of Cass Winthrop and remained until the series finale in 1999.

Schnetzer later brought the character of Cass Winthrop to the CBS soap opera As the World Turns from 1999 until the character’s exit in 2002.

Mary McDonnell had been acting professionally for years. She had Obie Award on the shelf and was stacking up off-Broadway credits, but there was still something missing in her decision about whether she should have a child. Then one morning she read the New York Times in bed with her coffee, and that changed her mind.

'All right, we can have a kid now,' she told her then-husband, actor Randle Mell, on the phone that morning. He was in Washington doing a play. She was in bed. She'd just read a rave review of her performance as Nora in A Doll's House at Hartford Stage.

The 'Dances With Wolves' star opened up about the moment on The Sackhoff Show, hosted by her former Battlestar Galactica co-star Katee Sackhoff. Her husband's reaction to the call? 'Well, gee, well, great. That's all it took, huh?' She was pregnant about a month later.

It sounds impulsive. McDonnell says it was actually something deeper.

She and Mell had always known they wanted kids. He'd grown up in a big family, wanted children, was ready to go, but she was the uncertain one. 'Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think I want to have two someday,' was how she put it. The someday was the problem. She didn't know what had to happen first.

What had to happen, it turned out, was that she needed to believe she was 'legitimate'.

McDonnell came to acting in college, later than many of her peers, and spent years feeling like she was catching up. She'd racked up serious credits, including an Obie Award in 1981 for playwright Emily Mann's Still Life, a gut-punch docu-drama about Vietnam and Agent Orange, but the insecurity didn't end. The night after accepting the Obie, she was waitressing at a Greek restaurant in New York when a table of customers recognized her. 'Weren't you...didn't you get...' they stammered. The story still makes her laugh.

'I wasn't sure I was legitimate,' she told Sackhoff. The New York Times, she explained, was the arbiter of opinion in her family growing up. When the paper validated her work at Hartford Stage, something changed. 'It gave me a sense of security and a feeling of peace, which allowed me the room to think, well, maybe I can do it all.'

That peace didn't mean motherhood was easy once it arrived. McDonnell described the hardest part as leaving her children in the late afternoon to go prepare for evening performances, walking out the door as it got dark, the kids unsettled, dinner not yet on the table. 'That was the hardest thing for me,' she said, 'to separate from the children during the late afternoon, early evening.'

She sought therapy, leaned on help, and asked herself honestly whether what acting demanded of her was taking something essential away from her kids. 'Sometimes I wasn't sure,' she admitted.

What she was sure of that morning in 1986, NYT in hand, was that she'd finally stopped waiting for permission.

The 1,700-Year-Old Remains of the Lighthouse of Alexandria

When divers began lifting massive stones from the harbor floor in Alexandria, they were not retrieving small fragments. According to T13, some of the blocks weigh between 70 and 80 tons, making them among the largest pieces ever recovered from the site.

These architectural elements include lintels, doorway supports, paving slabs, and even fragments of what may have been a monumental gateway. Archaeologists believe they once formed part of the legendary lighthouse that guided ships safely into Alexandria’s harbor more than two thousand years ago.

Built in the early 3rd century BCE under the rule of Ptolemy I and later Ptolemy II, the lighthouse was an engineering marvel. Rising to roughly 100 meters tall, it was one of the tallest human-made structures on Earth for centuries and one of the famed Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The structure survived for over 1,600 years before repeated earthquakes eventually brought it down in the medieval period. Many stones were later reused in the nearby Citadel of Qaitbay, while others slipped into the sea where they remained forgotten for generations.

How Underwater Archaeology Is Rebuilding a Wonder of the World

Recovering these stones is only the first step. Per Le Ravi, archaeologists are now scanning and studying the pieces in detail as part of a broader research effort known as the PHAROS project, an international initiative aiming to digitally reconstruct the lighthouse.

Using 3D scanning and advanced modeling technology, researchers hope to create a “digital twin” of the monument. This virtual reconstruction will allow historians and engineers to better understand how the lighthouse was designed and how it functioned as a navigational beacon for ancient ships.

Norris, who starred on Rachel Recchia and Gabby Windey's season of The Bachelorette and seasons 8 and 9 of Bachelor in Paradise, married Sheridan, who appeared on season 9 of The Voice, on Friday, Apr. 17, in Oceanside, California.

"California is incredibly special to us because it’s where we first met. Being able to celebrate our wedding in the same place where our story began felt really meaningful," Sheridan told People. "We also wanted all of our East Coast family to visit and explore the place where we’ve built our life together in Southern California."

The "timeless and romantic" wedding was attended by 150 guests, including former Bachelorette contestants Aven Jones, Erich Schwer, Mario Vassall, and Matt Labagh.

The couple met after Sheridan saw Norris on TV and sent him a DM on Instagram. She instantly thought he was "gorgeous" and her aunt even teased that he could be her "future husband" one day.

Norris and Sheridan "knew something really special had begun" after their first two dates as "the conversation flowed so effortlessly" and it felt like they had "known each other forever."

The pair got engaged on May 11, 2025, in Norris' hometown of Wildwood, New Jersey after two years of dating.

"He had secretly flown in my close family and friends, and after he got down on one knee by the ocean, we left the beach and walked straight into a surprise engagement party filled with everyone I love," Sheridan recalled. "I’m usually very hard to surprise, so the fact that he pulled it off so flawlessly made it even more special. It was thoughtful, intentional, and completely unforgettable. Gosh, I still get butterflies thinking about it!"
