We Asked 3 Chefs the Best Thing To Make With Canned Sweet Corn, and Every Answer Surprised Us
Fresh sweet corn may steal the spotlight every summer, but there's a strong case for keeping a few cans of corn tucked away in your pantry year-round. It's inexpensive, always in season, and ready whenever you need to pull together a quick side dish, hearty soup, or last-minute appetizer.
Better yet, canned sweet corn has come a long way from the mushy reputation it had years ago. When you start with a quality product and prepare it the right way, it can taste surprisingly fresh.
To find out how the pros make the most of this pantry staple, we asked three chefs to share their favorite ways to cook with canned sweet corn. While their go-to recipes couldn't have been more different, they all agreed on one thing before the can is ever opened.

Their advice was remarkably consistent: look for simple ingredients, skip unnecessary additives, and don't overlook a few easy prep tricks that can dramatically improve both the flavor and texture of canned corn. Once you've got a good can of corn, the possibilities stretch far beyond serving it alongside dinner.
Here are the three best ways to use canned sweet corn according to the cooking pros we spoke with, plus how to shop smarter at the grocery store (because not all canned produce is the same).
Our Panel of Experts- Serge Krikorian is the executive chef and managing partner of Vibrant Occasions Catering in Benton, Arkansas. He and his wife, Mary, have operated family restaurants and catering businesses for more than 30 years and also host the cooking show Cooking with the Kriks.
- Mika Leon is a Miami-based chef, recipe developer and author of the cookbook Cuban Soul, which celebrates the flavors and traditions of Cuban cuisine. Leon is a third-generation chef and owner of Caja Caliente in Coral Gables, Florida.
- Jennifer Calder is a private chef and founder of The Calder Table. With more than 12 years of professional culinary experience, she specializes in globally inspired private dining centered on seasonal ingredients and thoughtful hospitality.

On this front, all three chefs we spoke with were unanimous, offering nearly identical advice when it came to shopping for canned sweet corn: keep the ingredient list as short as possible.
Executive chef Serge Krikorian recommends looking for little more than corn, water and a small amount of salt. He also suggests choosing corn that's bright in color with firm kernels rather than anything that appears dull or mushy. "For the freshest flavor, a low-sodium corn will be your best bet so you can season it any way you like," Krikorian says.
Chef Mika Leon agrees. She says she always looks for simple, recognizable ingredients. "I try to avoid anything with added sugars or unnecessary artificial preservatives," she says. Like Krikorian, Leon prefers no-salt-added varieties whenever possible so she has complete control over the finished dish.
Chef Jennifer Calder echoes the same advice. "I prefer no-salt-added so I can control the seasoning myself. I also pay attention to the kernels; they should be bright yellow and uniform, not dull or mushy," she says.
The chefs also shared one simple prep trick that can make canned corn taste dramatically better. Leon recommends rinsing the kernels thoroughly, draining them well, and even patting them dry before sautéing or roasting. Calder uses the same technique, explaining that removing excess moisture helps the corn brown, leading to better texture and deeper flavor.
The Best Thing To Make With Canned Sweet Corn, According to 3 ChefsThese are the three wildly different ways to use canned corn that these chefs swear by.
1. Fresh Summer Succotashmphillips007 / Getty Images
For Krikorian, canned sweet corn is the perfect shortcut for a colorful succotash.
He sautés the corn with butter, onions, bell peppers and fresh herbs to create a quick side dish that captures the flavors of summer without requiring fresh corn on the cob. It's quick and easy enough for a weeknight dinner, but versatile enough to pair with grilled meats, seafood, or barbecue at your next party or cookout.
According to Krikorian, it's "a side dish that's refreshing and tastes just like summer. Simple, beautiful and pairs well with almost anything."
2. Creamy Elote-Inspired Corn DipLeon's favorite way to use the canned kernels is to transform them into a crowd-pleasing appetizer inspired by Mexican street corn.
Her first step is charring the drained corn in a hot skillet to develop a smoky flavor before stirring it together with Mexican crema, lime juice, chipotle peppers in adobo, TajĂn, melty cheese, cilantro and Cotija cheese. The result is a creamy, slightly spicy dip that's perfect for serving with tortilla chips at parties or game-day gatherings.
Leon recommends this dish stating, "it's perfect when you need a quick appetizer for a party. It comes together fast, but it tastes like you put way more effort into it than you actually did."
3. Crispy Corn FrittersCalder's favorite use for canned sweet corn is crispy corn fritters.
After thoroughly drying the kernels, she folds them into a light batter with scallions, fresh herbs, Parmesan and a touch of smoked paprika before frying them until golden brown. Calder suggests serving them with lemon-herb aioli, chipotle crema or whipped feta topped with hot honey for an elevated appetizer that's equally at home at brunch or dinner.
According to Calder, "canned sweet corn works beautifully [in this recipe] because the kernels are already tender and consistent in texture."
More Genius Ways To Use Canned Sweet CornMargoeEdwards / Getty Images
The chefs agreed that canned corn deserves a much bigger role in the kitchen than simply being served as a side dish.
Krikorian loves stirring it into chowders; folding it into cornbread batter; tossing it into tacos, salads, pasta dishes and fried rice; or blending it into a silky sweet corn soup. He believes that canned sweet corn "is one of the most versatile pantry staples because it adds sweetness, texture and color to almost any dish."
Leon recommends charring canned corn before adding it to rice bowls, tacos, quesadillas, pasta salads, or even a cold pasta salad with chipotle peppers and rotisserie chicken. She also suggests using it to make Venezuelan cachapasâsoft, slightly sweet corn pancakes traditionally filled with melty cheese.
Calder shares many of the same ideas, including stirring corn into mac and cheese; blending it into chowders and bisques for natural sweetness and creaminess; mixing it into cornbread or muffin batter; and tossing it into pasta salads with fresh herbs and lemon vinaigrette. She also suggests patting it dry and cooking it in a hot skillet for a roasted corn that can be added to your favorite dishes.
Final TakeawaysWhether you're making a comforting bowl of soup, a quick weeknight side, or a party-worthy appetizer, the chefs agree that canned sweet corn is far more versatile than many home cooks realize. Start with a quality can, drain it well and don't be afraid to give the kernels a little color in a hot skillet. These simple prep steps can make this everyday pantry staple taste surprisingly close to fresh.

1977 'Strange' Rock Hit, Written by the Eagles, Is Still a Radio Staple 49 Years Later
Throughout the 1970s, the Eagles established themselves as a quintessential soft rock band, putting out hits like "Take It Easy" (1972), "Lyin' Eyes" (1975), and "Hotel California," released in December 1976.
Those who've listened to "Hotel California," which still gets blasted on the radio nearly 50 years after its release, know that the somewhat spooky tune is a departure from the Eagles' usual sound. In a 1992 interview on Later with Bob Costas, the late Glenn Frey discussed writing the hit with his bandmates, Don Felder and Don Henley. He explained that he and his bandmates were inspired to pen the song because of Steely Dan's unique lyrics.
"They had lines in their songs that we would sort of look at ourselves and say, 'Whoa, would we have put that in one of our songs?' We started talking about 'Hotel California' and wanted to sort of write a song that was sort of like an episode of the Twilight Zone," explained Frey, who died in 2016 at the age of 67.
He went on to say that the band wrote the track off, the band's 1976 album, Hotel California, with the intention "to just sort of create something strange just to see if [they] could do it."
Felder, who was responsible for the song's musical composition, shared his thoughts about why "Hotel California" has been consistent in its popularity during a 2023 interview on The Big Interview with Dan Rather. Felder, now 78, said he believed that the song's "unique combination of the basic chord progression" and Henley's "brilliant lyrics" have caused it to reach icon status.
He also noted that while the song has been a radio staple, he initially believed it was "just the absolute wrong format for AM radio," primarily due to it being over six minutes long. He joked, however, that disc jockeys ended up having a preference for playing the song because it gave them a good amount of time to step away from their radio booth.
"These jockeys loved it because they could put it on and they could go out and smoke a cigarette or go to the bathroom. They had a six-and-a-half-minute break to go out and come back into the studio, so they loved it. So I don't know if that was part of the reason it got played so much or not, but it worked out quite well," said the musician during the 2023 interview.

Beautiful by Drew Barrymore Electric Gooseneck Kettle, From $30 (was $38) at Walmart Shop at WalmartConsistency is by far one of the gooseneck's greatest benefits. With its lean spout, it can temper the speed at which water flows and make it easier for you to pour slowly. Pour-over enthusiasts know this is critical for even saturation of coffee grounds and a smoother and richer cup. The more evenly the water permeates the grounds, the more balanced the flavor.
The Beautiful kettle adds a simple element to your routine, too. It's a one-touch, 1200-watt boil system, with an indicator light that alerts you when the kettle's on. As you pour, the angled spout promotes a clean flow while preventing spills. In addition to a convenient 360-degree base and a handy cord wrap to prevent countertop clutter, it also has an auto-off safety feature for added peace of mind.
It also lives up to its name with its truly beautiful design. The elongated spout alone is distinctive, while the full body is detailed with a subtle metallic "B" logo just above the base. Tinged with golden-copper accents that nicely complement the matte exterior, the kettle exudes "classy" vibes, according to a shopper.
Over 4,600 shoppers have weighed in and given the product five stars. Several people noted that it "heats quickly." Another person described it as one of their "most-used items," pointing out that it saves "so much time rather than waiting on water to boil." Between its speed, ease of use, and elegance, it's easily one of the most practical items you can add to your space.

Dwayne Johnson Reveals the Heartfelt Gift He Got From Willie Nelson for His BirthdayÂ
Dwayne Johnson has gone from WWE superstar to Hollywood actor, and now a singer, with him revealing country iconWillie Nelsongifted him a guitar for his birthday.
Not many would expect the 54-year-old to have many musical inspirations, and he openly spoke about his own music journey with Rolling Stone. The actor recently released a song titled "Your Dad" for the Moana: Voices Across the Ocean album that accompanied the recently released live-action film.
Johnson revealed he grew up surrounded by music and "a lot of singing" tied to his Polynesian parents and culture. Since childhood, he was inspired by some of the greatest musicians like Sam Cooke, but he reveals Nelson holds a special place for a big reason.
âAt a very early age, my deep influences were Sam Cooke, Elvis, George Jones, Merle Haggard, even Johnny Paycheck. Guys like that who just were on top of their genres, and also Willie Nelson, who, as a matter of fact, gave me my first guitar,â he told Rolling Stone.
âYou know the Trigger guitar he has? The historic one? I guess Martin only made 100 of those, and as a birthday gift, âcause I was such a huge fan, he gave me one of those. I mean, I play like dog s--- compared to him, but itâs still a cool gift. Anyway, thatâs my musical start.â
The guitar he's referring to is infamously used by Nelson throughout his career and is a modified Martin N-20 nylon-string classical acoustic guitar. The instrument was the result of Nelson's Baldwin guitar having been damaged in 1969 after a drunk man stepped on it. He tested multiple guitars from different brands until landing on a Martin guitar, but kept the electrical components of the Baldwin. Nelson would pioneer the unique guitar and name it Trigger after Roy Rogers' horse.
Johnson admits his style of singing is unique, as he explains. âI always like to say I sing from the heart â and I sing in keys that donât exist. So itâs a good combo.â Armed with Nelson's guitar, the actor says he's open to exploring music a bit further, and "maybe something in just the old-school soul genre, with some country flavor." Don't expect any up-to-date hits, as the former wrestler says he's more invested in "old-school soul." Â
It's clear that Johnson has a deep love for country music and has "such reverence and respect" for music from Nashville. He's also open to the idea of a duets album and would be honored to sing with artists invested in their music and country roots.

1975 Rock Epic, Revived 17 Years Later, Just Named the Greatest No. 2 Hit of All Time by Billboard
One of rock's most ambitious songs has just earned another major distinction, more than 50 years after it was first released.
Queen's âBohemian Rhapsodyâ has been named the greatest No. 2 hit of all time by Billboard, topping a new ranking of the best songs in Hot 100 history that peaked at No. 2 without ever reaching the summit.
But there's an unusual twist behind the song's place on the list: âBohemian Rhapsodyâ wasn't a No. 2 hit when Queen originally released it.
It took 17 years, the death of Freddie Mercury and an unforgettable scene in Wayne's World to send the song higher on the U.S. charts than it had ever been before.
'Bohemian Rhapsody' Tops Billboard's Greatest No. 2 HitsâBohemian Rhapsodyâ beat some formidable competition for the top spot on Billboard's ranking.
Lady Gaga's âBad Romanceâ landed at No. 2, followed by Missy Elliott's âWork It,â Prince and the Revolution's âPurple Rainâ and Kelly Clarkson's âSince U Been Goneâ to round out the Top 5.
The rest of the Top 10 includes Marvin Gaye's âWhat's Going On,âThe Ronettes' âBe My Baby,â Dr. Dre's âNuthin' But a 'G' Thangâ featuring Snoop Dogg, Cyndi Lauper's âGirls Just Want to Have Funâ and Bob Dylan's âLike a Rolling Stone.â
That puts Queen atop a list containing songs widely considered among the defining recordings of their respective eras.
Yet âBohemian Rhapsody'sâ path to becoming the greatest No. 2 hit is particularly unusual.
Released as the lead single from Queen's 1975 album A Night at the Opera, the nearly six-minute song became a sensation in the U.K., where it spent nine weeks at No. 1. Its initial American reception was considerably more modest. âBohemian Rhapsodyâ peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1976.
It might have remained a Top 10 hit rather than a No. 2 hit if not for a movie released nearly two decades later.
'Wayne's World' Revived 'Bohemian Rhapsody' 17 Years LaterIn 1992's Wayne's World, Wayne (Mike Myers), Garth (Dana Carvey) and their friends famously pile into an AMC Pacer and erupt into synchronized headbanging when the hard-rock section of âBohemian Rhapsodyâ kicks in.
The scene introduced Queen's song to a new generation of American listeners and sent it racing back up the charts. The revival came just months after Mercury died in November 1991.
âBohemian Rhapsodyâ ultimately climbed to No. 2 on the Hot 100 in May 1992, six months after Mercury's death. In what seems like an unbelievable bit of trivia, âJumpâ by Kris Kross prevented it from reaching No. 1.
The song's 1992 U.S. re-release spent 17 weeks on the chart, giving âBohemian Rhapsodyâ a new American peak 16 years after its original Hot 100 run.
That remarkable second life is what ultimately made the song eligible for Billboard's new distinction.
Queen Was Warned 'Bohemian Rhapsody' Was Too LongOf course, âBohemian Rhapsodyâ had been defying expectations long before Wayne's World came along.
Mercury described the sprawling composition as a âmock operaâ created by combining three songs he'd written. Queen recorded it with producer Roy Thomas Baker across five studios in August and September 1975. The elaborate production required extensive overdubbing, with tracks bounced through multiple generations of 24-track tape.
Its unconventional structure was equally striking. Rather than following a typical verse-chorus format, âBohemian Rhapsodyâ moves through a ballad, an elaborate operatic section, hard rock and a quieter coda.
Not everyone thought radio listeners would embrace it.
Mercury recalled that record executives believed its 5-minute, 55-second running time made the song essentially unmarketable. They wanted Queen to shorten it.
He refused.
âI said no way,â Mercury recalled in a 1985 interview with Australian TV's Molly Meldrum, explaining that his position was that the song would be released in its entirety or not at all. He acknowledged that doing so was a major risk because the record could have flopped if radio stations refused to play it.
Instead, DJ Kenny Everett helped create enormous demand in Britain by repeatedly playing the song before it was even commercially available. According to Queen's Brian May in an interview with Blender, Everett helped himself to a copy of the song without anyone even knowing.
âHe walked out of the studio with the tape without anyone realizing. The next morning, Iâm woken up by the sound of âBohemian Rhapsodyâ blaring through the ceiling from my upstairs neighborâs apartment," May recalled. "I thought I was going mad. It was like the song was following me, because, as far as I knew, no one except us had the tapes. But Kenny played it three times that day, and the next day, and he got a brilliant reaction from his listeners.â
The gamble paid off.
âBohemian Rhapsodyâ eventually became one of the band's signature recordings, returned to No. 1 in the U.K. following Mercury's death and received Diamond certification in the United States in 2021.
And now the song that couldn't quite reach the top of the Hot 100, even after one of the most famous movie revivals in rock history, has found another way to be No. 1.

From savory to sweet, shoppers have seen more than a few new editions of this popular pick. Adventurous eaters enjoyed the Frankâs Red Hot mash-up and Pizza flavors, while purists stuck to the Original and Cheddar choices. Along the way, the brand expanded to include Zesty Ranch, Seasoned Pretzels, Grahams (including indulgently sweet Cinnamon Roll, Strawberry Shortcake, Sâmores, and Vanilla Cupcake), and Whole Grain options. But thatâs not all.Â
While you might expect that a snack named Goldfish would look like a fish, limited-time additions such as PokĂ©mon, Toy Story, and Disney shapes add a fun flair to the usual lineup.Â
Now fans of this brand can add gluten-free to their list of options. Why the change, and why now? Tiphanie Maronta, SVP, Goldfish Crackers, shared in a press release, âWeâve heard from many families who love Goldfish but havenât always been able to enjoy them together, and that feedback stayed with us.â
Maronta continued, âWe wanted to take the time to make sure every detailâfrom the taste and texture to the iconic shapeâwas true to Goldfish. With Goldfish Gluten Free, more families can now share the lunchbox moments, after-school snacks, and smiles that Goldfish has inspired for generations.â
What flavors are availbale? As of now, this line only features the classic Cheddar flavor. Made with 100% real cheese, this signature snack has the same savory taste youâve always enjoyed. Of course, minus the gluten.Â
Where can shoppers get the new Goldfish Gluten Free crackers?ÂBefore you start scouring stores, looking for these gluten-free goodies, keep reading for some crucial info.Â
Goldfish Gluten Free is coming. But not yet. Shoppers will have to wait until November 2026 for the snackâs nationwide debut.Â

What do gluten-free shoppers think of the new Goldfish snack?Shoppers seemed pretty pleased about the new addition to the Goldfish family. On the Celiac subreddit, one commenter wrote, âIâm so excited now!â while others added, âI need them to do pizza flavor next with a quicknessâ, âLegitimately tearing up (happy tears of course) at my desk at work,â and âIconic. Iâll take 500 boxes for Christmas.â
Martha Stewart's Viral Ghost Mirror Is Back at HomeGoods for Halloween
Spooky season is just around the corner, so it's no surprise that our favorite stores are already putting out all the Halloween decor.
But shoppers got the best surprise at HomeGoods when the viral Martha Stewart ghost mirror was spotted back on the shelf. The Martha Stewart ghost mirror first went viral in 2025 after it was dubbed a dupe for Pottery Barn's mirror priced at $599.
It quickly sold out, but it's officially back, and shoppers can't get their hands on the highly coveted Halloween decoration fast enough.
"I searched high and low for this last year and accidentally happened upon it during a recent shopping trip," one person wrote alongside a TikTok video of finding the viral ghost mirror. Another shopper shared her excitement about finding the viral mirror at HomeGoods, writing, "Martha Stewart Ghost Mirror is finally mine. I am officially done Halloween hunting."

⏠Fall October Halloween horror classic(177261) - rareNotePrices for the ghost mirror vary by location, ranging between $100 and $199, depending on the model. New versions of the mirror were also spotted, with one mirror seemingly aimed at Harry Potter fans thanks to its Hogwarts-inspired design. There is also a mirror with the phrase "They Are Right Behind You" written in spooky red lettering.
"Iâve been looking for the ghost mirror for 2 years now but came across this one! I wasnât sure about it at first, but now I love it," TikToker Allison Bounds shared after coming across the newer version of the Martha Stewart Halloween mirror.
If you prefer the original Pottery Barn mirror, it is currently on sale for $399, while Walmart has a smaller version for a more affordable $20 online. However, if you are a HomeGoods lover like us, you know the hunt is half the fun.
Whatever you decide, your 2026 Halloween decorations would not be complete without a ghost mirror in your home.
The âHealthyâ Habit Thatâs Silently Damaging Your Hearing, According to Audiologists
The birds chirping. Our favorite bop on the radio (or wherever you stream music these days). The sounds of loved ones laughing. These sounds make up the soundtrack of our lives. But our daily habits can affect how long and well we hear them.
OKâsay, what? Audiologists repeat: Your daily habits can contribute to hearing loss quickly or over time.
"Our habits matter a lot because hearing damage is cumulative and sneaky," explains Dr. Ross Cushing, Au.D., a board-certified audiologist and CEO/co-founder of Live Better Hearing + Balance. "It builds up over years of everyday noise exposure, not necessarily just one loud event. So, small choices about volume and the length of time you're exposed are essentially the only 'treatment' there is for hearing loss prevention because of noise."
Now, we have good news and bad news. Good news first: despite a growing (and aging) population, hearing loss numbers actually dipped a bitâfrom 16% (28.0 million) in 1999-2004 to 14% (27.7 million) in 2011-12, the National Institute on Deafness and Communication Disorders (NIDCD) reports. Age is the strongest predictor of hearing loss, but you can still feel empowered knowing you often have some say in how quickly and how much your hearing declines. The bad news is that there are a lot of sneaky, everyday sounds that can contribute to our ears...not working like they used to.
"Activities like mowing the lawn, concerts or loud toys can be damaging," Dr. Melissa Schnitzspahn, Au.D., an audiology manager with The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, tells Parade. "Some sounds, like a firecracker going off, can be loud enough that one exposure can cause hearing loss. If weâre aware of potential threats to our hearing, we can better work to protect it."
Unfortunately, there's a so-called "healthy" habit that audiologists warn can silently damage your hearingâand the effects often begin shortly after birth. They sound off on the popular habit and alternatives below.
đ©șSIGN UP for tips to stay healthy & fit with the top moves, clean eats, health trends & more delivered right to your inbox twice a weekđ
This âHealthyâ Habit Might Damage Your Hearing, Audiologists WarnAudiologists warn that using white noise machines can damage hearing, even if you use them with the healthiest intentions.
"White noise is a sound that combines all of the pitches that we can hear at the same level," Dr. Schnitzspahn notes. "A white noise machine emits the sound and is often found to be helpful for sleeping, soothing babies and tinnitus."
Yet, research shows that using a white noise machine can actually negatively affect sleep and hearing.
Dr. Amy Sarow, Au.D., CCC-A, an audiologist and the director of consumer education & audiology with Hearing Tracker, notes that exposure to certain levels can be dangerous to your ears. For this reason, she notes that employers must implement hearing conservation programs, such as providing hearing protection and annual hearing testing, for workers once they're exposed to an average of 85 dBA (A-weighted decibels) over an eight-hour workday.
"Many hearing professionals also use 85 dBA as a practical benchmark because noise exposure above this level becomes increasingly risky as either the volume or duration increases," Dr. Sarow explains. "Hearing loss can happen abruptly, in the case of one brief, extremely loud impulse soundâlike a gunshotâor it can happen due to hours of consistent exposure."
Some research suggests that white noise machines can exceed 85 decibels, which can harm hearing during a night's sleep, Dr. Cushing explains.
"Then, if you compound that exposure to many nights, the risk increases," he adds.
Even if you're slightly below 85 dBA, Dr. Sarow warns that it can add up, especially if it's happening for several straight hours overnightâover the course of several nights.
"During the day, that person may also experience other noise due to work or recreational noise exposure," she says. "Repeated over time, excessive noise exposure can contribute to gradual noise-induced hearing loss."
White noise machines are especially common infant sleep tools, but Dr. Cushing warns they're not as risk-free as they seem. "The riskiest scenarios are actually the common onesâthe white noise machine turned up loud next to the baby's crib to try to mask out a noisy environment, and left running all night," he tells Parade.
Dr. Cushing adds that babies are especially vulnerable because their ear canals are smaller, which can amplify high-pitched sounds and cause more damage. He also notes that there's concern the noise may affect normal auditory development becauseâbelieve it or notâthe brain learns to process sounds even during sleep.

White Noise Machines: Best Practices for Hearing Protection & AlternativesIf you're going to use a white noise machine to improve your focus or sleep or help a baby, Dr. Cushing suggests keeping the sound below 50 decibels, measured where your head rests. He recommends the same noise level for adults and infants and notes that the CDC has a free sound level meter app.
He also advises people to keep white noise machines at least seven feet from a bed or crib. If the machine has a timer setting, use it.
"Shorter is safer," he tells Parade. "Ideally, use a timer so the machine shuts off after you fall asleep. Most people only need the masking during the window of time that they are actually trying to fall asleep. That said, if you need to have it all night, then put it on the lowest volume, and put it at least seven feet away from you."
Dr. Sarow says you can also consider alternatives to white noise machines, such as:
She says these products usually produce steady-state noises at lower levels.
Other Bad Habits for HearingUsing a white noise machine isn't the only habit to ditch if you want to protect your ears. Dr. Schnitzspahn says other things to stop doing if you want to reduce your hearing loss risk include:
- Listening to headphones too loudly.
- Not wearing hearing protection when doing loud activities (working, using firearms and attending concerts).
- Using Q-tips to clean your ears ("They are labeled to clean the outer part of your ear, not to remove wax," Dr. Schnitzspahn points out. "You end up pushing the wax deeper into your ear and forming a wall of wax that then has to be removed by a professional. If your ear canal is blocked, your hearing is blocked.")
"The best thing, when possible, is to prevent noise-induced hearing loss by turning the volume down, limiting exposure duration or using hearing protection," Dr. Sarow says. "Once someone has hearing loss, hearing aids can help to improve hearing and make speech clearer."

We Asked 3 Child Psychologists the Worst '70s Parenting Trend, and They All Said the Same Thing
The old school vs. modern parenting debateâwhich often plays out in Instagram comments and TikTok videos about gentle parenting vs. authoritarianâcan feel exhausting after a while. In fact, discussion of the worst '70s parenting trends can feel like an exercise in hating your parents or grandparents.
However, child psychologists have a more nuanced and compassionate take.
"Every generation raises children within the cultural, economic and scientific context of its time," Dr. Amy Kincaid Todey, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist, tells Parade. "Looking back isnât about deciding who parented 'correctly.' Itâs about recognizing which practices continue to serve children well and where new research has expanded our understanding."
She notes that parenting evolves, as medicine does.
"We donât criticize physicians for practicing according to the evidence available decades agoâwe build on what weâve learned," she shares. "Families deserve that same grace."
Dr. Todey and other psychologists tell Parade that previous generations often emphasized responsibility, resilience, respect and independence. Those qualities aren't "bad" even by today's standards and were shaped by parents' own experiences on what it took for someone to succeed. Yet sometimes it can veer into "authoritarian parenting," which is big on high expectations and strict rules but goes light on emotional warmth and flexibility.
Dr. Holly Schiff, Psy.D., a licensed clinical psychologist who treats children, says the goal is obedience and compliance, not helping a child understand the reasoning behind expectations. We're learning that authoritarian parenting affects people in the short and long term.
"In the short term, children often appear well-behaved because they're motivated by fear of punishment," she explains. "Over time, though, they may become less confident making independent decisions, more anxious about making mistakes and less likely to communicate openly with parents."
Dr. Todey says modern child psychologists' parenting advice is informed by research on attachment, emotional regulation and development. She says it's not about shaming previous generations, but integrating wisdom. That said, psychologists agree that the worst '70s parenting trends are worth retiringâespecially one in particular.
The Unanimous Verdict: The 'Seen and Not Heard' MandateThree psychologists agree that the idea that "children should be seen and not heard" tops the list of worst '70s parenting trends.
They say it leads to emotional invalidation in childhood and discourages communication, leading to adults who struggle with self-advocacy and confidence.

The 'We Turned Out Fine' Myth: What the Data Actually ShowsDr. Brett A. Biller, Psy.D., the Mental Health Director at Audrey Hepburn Childrenâs House at Hackensack University Medical Center, regularly hears the euphemism, "I turned out fine."
"In some cases, they did," he tells Parade. "However, following that logic is akin to guiding practice based on a study of one or simple luck."
Studies of more than one person examine authoritarian parenting effects, which Dr. Todey says combines high expectations with low responsiveness.
"Parents emphasize obedience, rules and compliance while providing relatively little emotional warmth, explanation or collaborative problem-solving," she explains. "This differs from authoritative parenting, which combines clear expectations with warmth, responsiveness and guidance."
A Frontiers in Psychologyanalysis of questionnaires completed by more than 2,300 parents and teachers of children ages 3 to 6 suggested that authoritarian parenting negatively affected kids' interactions with their peers. Another study indicated that children raised under authoritarian parenting had lower life scores, while their peers raised in authoritative environments reported higher ones.
"Many adults did become successful, loving and resilient despite growing up with more authoritarian parenting styles," Dr. Schiff points out. "But resilience doesn't necessarily mean there was no cost. I've worked with many adults who struggle with perfectionism, difficulty expressing emotions, people-pleasing, anxiety or feeling guilty for having needs."
Dr. Schiff says these patterns often trace back to emotional invalidation in childhood. Dr. Todey suggests a reframe.
"A better question isnât whether someone turned out fine," she says. "Itâs what strengths they gained, what burdens they carried and how we can help the next generation carry a little less while still developing resilience."

1970s Authoritarianism vs. Modern Emotion CoachingParenting styles have changed. Currently, people tend to lean toward authoritative or gentle parenting versus authoritarian parenting. The goal is not permissiveness but emotional validation and warmth within certain limits and boundaries.
What does that mean in real life? Dr. Todey shares common scenarios to illustrate the differences between old-school vs. modern parenting approaches.
Parenting ScenarioThe 1970s Approach (Common Earlier Tactics)The Modern Psychologist Approach (Evidence-Based Approach Used Today)Store meltdown over not getting a toy
Tell the child to âstop crying," and give an immediate consequence. Then, leave the store if needed.
Validate the emotion and hold the boundary. The aim is to regulate first and discuss later.
A child points at someone using a wheelchair
Say, "Don't stare" and/or "That's rude."
Respond calmly. Explain differences simply. Model respectful curiosity.
A child doesnât want to hug Uncle Matt
Encourage or insist on a hug. Emphasize politeness.
Respect bodily autonomy. Offer another greeting, like a wave. The goal is to teach kindness without forced affection.
A child lies about cleaning their room
Punish the child and lecture them about honesty.
Stay curious. Hold the child accountable. Reinforce honesty.
A child rolls their eyes at a request
Immediate correction. The focus is on respect.
Stay regulated. Address respectful communication. Discuss expectations calmly.

The 3 '70s Scripts You Need To Drop (And What To Say Instead)"Children should be seen and not heard" is not the only line on child psychologists' list of "worst 70s parenting trends." They share a few more common old-school parenting scripts you need to drop and offer child psychologist parenting advice on what to say instead.
1. "Because I said so"Dr. Todey says this common phrase is still used today. The problem?
"It ends the conversation without helping children understand the reasoning behind expectations," she explains.
Instead, she recommends letting your child "peek behind the curtain of your mind," encouraging positive communication and critical thinking. You can try, âI know you donât like this decision. Let me explain why Iâm making it.â
Related: People Who Felt Ignored as Children Often Develop These 14 Traits as Adults
2. "Stop crying, or I'll give you something to cry about"Dr. Schiff warns that this cringeworthy phrase is peak emotional invalidation in childhood.
"It teaches children that emotions aren't acceptable and that vulnerability is unsafe," she says.
She suggests an alternative that validates a child's feelings and promotes a "we-first" mindset. For instance, she says you might tell a child, "I know you're upset. Let's figure this out together."
3. "Big boys don't cry" or "Good girls don't get angry"Ugh, the patriarchy in these phrases is richâand everyone is poorer for it.
"This is outdated because it teaches children that certain emotions are unacceptable based on gender, making healthy emotional expression more difficult later in life," Dr. Schiff notes. "Instead, you can say, 'Everyone has big feelings; what's important is how we express them.'"
How To Be a 'Cycle Breaker' Without Resenting Your Own ParentsExperts say it's essential to address generational trauma and parenting. It can help us engage in cycle-breaking parentingâmaking life a little better for the next generation. But you don't have to hate your parents in the process.
"Acknowledging that our caregivers may not have always engaged in current best practice does not require that we view our caregivers or even the impact of their efforts negatively," Dr. Biller says. "Rather, it is the opposite... Our caregivers may have provided for us in the best way they knew how, and now we know more and can do even better for our children."
Here's how to break cycles with empathy and love for both prior and future generations.Â
1. Lead with empathyBeing a caregiver is tough now, and it was tough back in the '70s. Dr. Biller says it's important to acknowledge that.
"Rather than sitting in negative judgment of parenting practices we observe to be ineffective, or even harmful, it is imperative that we validate each other's parenting difficulties so that support is more likely to be given and received," he notes.
Related: Psychologist Says if You Were Born in the 1980s, You Likely Have These 7 Traits
2. Become a bridge, not a breakNot everything about previous generations' parenting was "bad." Some of the values remain pillars of upstanding citizenship.
"Maybe your parents taught perseverance, responsibility, loyalty, generosity or commitment to family," Dr. Todey notes. "Those are gifts worth keeping. At the same time, you may choose to communicate differently, repair conflict more openly, or make more room for emotions."
She shares that healthy parenting isn't about completely reinventing the wheel and starting over.
"Itâs about building on the foundation that came before you while strengthening the parts that needed reinforcing," she notes.
Related: We Asked 3 Child Psychologists What Outdoor Activity Is Best for KidsâThey All Said the Same Thing
3. Donât parent from fearâparent from intentionDr. Todey knows many parents are so afraid to repeat painful experiences from their childhoods that they start to parent against their upbringing.
"Sometimes that means overcorrecting," she states. "A parent who felt unheard may avoid setting boundaries. A parent who experienced harsh discipline may become reluctant to discipline at all."
Instead, she encourages parents to parent towards the family they want to create.
"The healthiest parenting doesnât usually happen at either extreme," the child psychologist adds. "It comes from responding to the child in front of you, not reacting to the child you once were."

Robin McGraw Was Waiting for Another Man When She Met Dr. Philâ50 Years Later, They're Still Together
Dr. Philand Robin McGraw are days away from celebrating 50 years of marriage, but their love story may never have happened if Robin's original date had shown up.
While looking back on their relationship ahead of their golden anniversary, Robin, 72, revealed to Us Weekly on Tuesday, August 11, that she wasn't actually expecting to meet her future husband that night. She was waiting for another man.
Robin explained that she was friends with Phil's sisterBrenda, who was dating an Air Force pilot at the time. Brenda wanted to set Robin up with her boyfriend's roommate, but bad weather prevented the men from making it into town.Â
While Robin was at Brenda's house waiting, Phil, now 75, was home sick from college. âI saw this big man coming down the hall, and I'm thinking, âWhoa, he's big!ââ she recalled. Despite the TV host admittedly being âgrumpyâ that evening, the two ended up watching a movie and talking for hours. Robin said it was âlove at first sightâ and that she knew that very night they would eventually get married.
Their first official date came the following evening, when Phil took Robin flying in his single-engine airplane. Their romance continued, and the author eventually proposed on Valentine's Day in 1976. They married exactly six months later, on August 14.
The wedding itself was a far cry from a lavish celebrity affair. Robin told Us Weekly they were âvery poorâ at the time and that her wedding dress cost $100, which she paid off through a layaway plan at $5 per week. They couldn't afford a professional photographer, and their reception consisted simply of punch and cookies.
Five decades later, they've built quite the life together. Phil and Robin welcomed two sons, Jay in 1979 and Jordan in 1986, and are now grandparents to four children.
As for making a marriage last this long, Phil believes it's the little things that matter. âSmall behaviors accumulate to big results across time,â he told the outlet. âYou have to be willing to do the work.â
Happy anniversary, Robin and Phil!

In the play, Beattyâs character is a college student who becomes involved with her older, successful professor, played by Jackman.
Despite the world knowing him as a megastar, Beatty previously said she didnât feel the least bit starstruck by Jackman.
âThere is nobody less movie-starry in the world than Hugh Jackman,â Beatty said recently in a piece in Interview. âHeâs the most generous, loving, open, kind, hardworking person. Heâs done so much musical theater, and you can see that in the way that he shows up to work. Nobody works harder than musical theater performersâtheyâre such athletes. You can see that in his sensibility around learning lines. So I was intimidated, but when we sat down to do the first reading of the play in the fall, it was so animated immediately that it became about the play very quickly.â
Ella Beatty Will Likely Star in The Bell JarThe rising theater star is in final talks to join Billie Eilish and Carey Mulligan in the film adaptation of Sylvia Plathâs iconic novel, Deadline reported. While itâs not yet clear who Beatty will play in The Bell Jar, we know that Eilish will make her acting debut in the role of protagonist Esther Greenwood, while Mulligan will play her mother. Sarah Polley is set to direct.
The 1963 novel, which mirrors Plathâs personal story, was previously adapted for the screen in 1979, and starred Marilyn Hassett in the role of Greenwood. A 2003 film, Sylvia, starring Gwyneth Paltrow in the role of the iconic poet, chronicled the writerâs life and tragic death by suicide.
Bryan Kohberger Update: Kaylee Goncalvesâ Dad Reveals Previously Undisclosed Details About Key Evidence
New details are emerging about one of the most closely scrutinized pieces of evidence in the Bryan Kohberger case, and Kaylee Goncalves' father says the families were told something about the knife sheath that hasn't received much public attention.
During an interview with Sean Hannity on FOX News Media's Hang Out with Sean Hannity podcast, Steve and Kristi Goncalves discussed what they say they learned about the evidence at the end of the case.
"I'm going to let your audience know something that I don't think anyone's talked about, which they told us at the very end," Steve said before describing what he says prosecutors planned to present about the knife sheath prior to Kohberger's plea deal.
Goncalves went on to describe a planned expert explanation involving biological material found on the sheath, saying the families were told it could show that the same person's DNA had been deposited during multiple instances of contact, potentially separated by at least 24 hours.
"So they were going to say that there were fresh fingerprint-type cells, and then there were aged ones. There were some that had been dated," Steve explained. "So they're going to say that whoever did thisâthe single source, one person's DNAâhad touched this button multiple times, right, on multiple days, at least 24 hours apart, because this is how we age these cells."Â
Steve appeared to emphasize the distinction because, in his view, the evidence would have addressed potential questions about how the DNA ended up on the sheath.Â
"It wasn't like the cops walked over and said, 'Hey, can you touch this pen?' And then they picked the pen and threw it in the crime scene and said, 'Hannity was there. He did it.' No, it wasn't like that. They had this down," he said.
The claim offers a new perspective on evidence that has played a central role in the case, though the details described by Goncalves have not been independently confirmed by Parade.
Kohberger is currently serving four life sentences without the possibility of parole for the deaths of Kaylee, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin. In late July 2026, however, the convicted killer told The New York Times that he wants a new trial.

View this post on Instagram1971 Rock Song, With a Trademark Guitar Riff by Keith Richards, Is Still a Powerful Hit 55 Years Later
Known as a "hard-bitten" rocker track, the Rolling Stones developed a hidden gem with "Bitch" that gave way to one of Keith Richards' hit guitar riffs.
FeaturingMick Jaggeron powerful vocals and Richards' iconic guitar shredding, "Bitch" became more than a B-side track to "Brown Sugar." The punchy song was riddled with popularity and controversy over its title and suggestive lyrics, but it didn't stop fans from falling in love with it.
"Bitch" was released in 1970 as part of their eleventh American studio album, Sticky Fingers. The track was actually released one week before the official album and wasn't officially promoted as a single. "Bitch" still gained massive radio airplay despite failing to enter the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The track appears on its surface to be a standard rock song, but its blaring use of horns and drama made it a Rolling Stone staple in the classic rock genre. What made it stand out was Richards' hard-hitting guitar riff, which he recorded in one take after being late to the recording session.
âWhen we were doing âBitchâ, Keith was very late,â engineer Andy Johns claimed, according to Far Out magazine. âJagger and Mick Taylor had been playing the song without him and it didnât sound very good. I walked out of the kitchen and he was sitting on the floor with no shoes, eating a bowl of cereal. Suddenly he said,âOi, Andy! Give me that guitar.ââ
âI handed him his clear Dan Armstrong Plexiglass guitar, he put it on, kicked the song up in tempo, and just put the vibe right on it,â Johns added. âInstantly, it went from being this laconic mess into a real groove. And I thought, Wow. Thatâs what he does. Instantly it went from not very good, feels weird, to BAM and there it is. Instantly changed gears, which impressed the shit out of me.â
Richards would comment that while fans noticed the turnaround in the beat, it wasn't something he was "conscious" about. Instead, it was a quick moment of creativity that "comes so naturally, as itâs always happened, and itâs always given that extra kick when the right moment comes back down again."
It may not be surprising that Rolling Stone would run into some issues with "Bitch" due to its suggestive lyrics. Jagger felt the track was more than worthy to be released as a standalone single, but the record label thought otherwise. The band often had trouble getting on the radio due to their provocative lyrics and drug references, but Jagger felt there "was never anything written that was offensive in that."
âBut Atlantic told me they couldnât get it played. None of our songs want to encourage drug use. I donât particularly want to encourage drug use. Not encourage it â I mean, you can write about it but you donât have to encourage it," he said.
Critics have often tagged the track as one of the band's best, and one that fans can easily rock out to.
