In 1975, a Hollywood film inspired one of the biggest ballads of the decade.

When Diana Ross recorded "Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To)," the song was created to accompany Mahogany, the romantic drama in which Ross starred as aspiring fashion designer Tracy Chambers.

By the end of the year, the heartfelt ballad had become far more than a movie theme, climbing to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and cementing its place as one of Ross' signature solo recordings.

The song was inseparable from the film that inspired it.

Written by Gerry Goffin and Michael Masser, "Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To)" captured the emotional conflict at the center of the movie, as Ross' character struggled to balance ambition, fame and love. Its reflective lyrics and sweeping orchestral arrangement gave the film an unforgettable musical centerpiece while allowing Ross to showcase one of the finest vocal performances of her solo career.

Mahogany also marked an important chapter in Ross' career beyond music. Following the success of Lady Sings the Blues, the Motown superstar continued to pursue acting while establishing herself as one of entertainment's biggest crossover stars.

"I never really thought of being an actress," Ross told the Los Angeles Times in 2017. "I had people who believed I could do anything I set my mind to — my mother said I was a jack-of-all-trades. Berry Gordy also saw something in me. He believed we could create magic — and we did.

Although Mahogany film received mixed reviews, its title song became an overwhelming success, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song and reaching audiences far beyond the movie theater.

It also gave Ross another role: costume designer.

"You know, design was my major in school," she told Andy Warhol for Interview Magazine. "I designed all the clothes in Mahogany. I always wanted to be a fashion designer and I learned costume illustration in high school."

The chart-topping single added another milestone to an already remarkable run of success. By the mid-1970s, Ross had firmly established herself as one of pop music's most successful solo artists, following her years with The Supremes. Hits including "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," "Touch Me in the Morning," "Love Hangover" and "Theme From Mahogany" helped define an era while demonstrating her remarkable versatility as a vocalist.

Nearly 50 years later, "Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To)" remains one of Diana Ross' most enduring recordings. What began as the emotional centerpiece of a major motion picture ultimately became one of the defining ballads of the 1970s, proving that sometimes a film’s greatest legacy can be the song it leaves behind.

As Kate and Michael reached the altar, William turned to see his bride. Lannin reported that William stated, "You look lovely. You look beautiful."

He then addressed Michael. "We're supposed to have just a small family affair." This caused smiles from Kate and her father, breaking the ice, causing a big smile from Kate that was caught by photographers and the 1900 guests in attendance.

William and Kate's parents, Michael and Carole Middleton, have always had a close relationship. It began while the couple was still college students at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.

Marie Claire once spoke to former royal butler Grant Harold, on behalf of Heart Bingo Online, who told the publication that William was embraced by the Middletons. Harold revealed, "When I was working with the family, he used to go and spend weekends at their house, which I know he really enjoyed.”

He continued, "They are a warm and welcoming family, and I imagine they gave him some of the normality he craved during his 20s and 30s.” Harold added that William appreciated Carole as a "second mother. He would speak to her when anything worries him, and if he wants advice or guidance. It’s always been the way.”

While I don’t use this every time I’m at a theme park, I do love it to glam up for nicer dinners or events with friends. The stick makes it super easy to apply, then I blend everything out with a big kabuki-style brush. The product starts as a cream, so it’s easy to blend, and sets nicely without being cakey. I also love that it’s more glowy than glittery.

If there’s one lipstick that’s been in my makeup bag forever and I’m constantly buying new tubes, it’s the M·A·Cximal Silky Matte Lipstick. I'm always on the lookout for easier ways to shlep food and drinks to the park. Don't get me wrong, I love a good picnic, but hauling a giant cooler across a parking lot, through a field, and over every mysterious patch of uneven grass is not exactly part of the charm. In 1982, Marillion released a song that immediately announced the arrival of one of progressive rock's most ambitious new bands.

Running for more than 17 minutes, "Grendel" showcased the British group's flair for theatrical storytelling, intricate musicianship and sprawling song structures. Although it has often been overshadowed by later favorites like "Kayleigh" and "Lavender," the epic remains one of the most celebrated recordings from the band's early years.

Its inspiration came from one of literature's oldest monsters.

Written by singer Fish and inspired by the legendary creature from the Old English epic Beowulf, "Grendel" transformed the ancient tale into a dramatic progressive rock suite. Rather than simply retelling the story, Marillion expanded on its themes of fear, isolation and heroism, weaving together atmospheric passages, explosive instrumental sections and vivid lyrics that quickly became a hallmark of the band’s sound.

The song arrived at a pivotal moment in Marillion's career.

Released on the Market Square Heroes EP, "Grendel" gave fans an early glimpse of the band's creative ambitions before the release of its debut album, Script for a Jesters Tear, the following year. At a time when many critics believed progressive rock had faded from prominence, Marillion emerged as one of the genre's leading new voices, helping spark a revival that introduced progressive music to a new generation.

"I think we showed, before we even signed a major deal, that there is a market for this kind of music," guitarist Steve Rothery told Innerviews. "We passionately believe in our music and it's good to think we've been able to bring that to a wide audience."

Although its length made radio airplay virtually impossible, "Grendel" became a favorite at the band's concerts, where its dramatic twists and extended instrumental passages allowed Marillion to showcase the musicianship that earned the group a devoted following throughout the 1980s. For many longtime fans, it remains one of the defining performances of the Fish era.

Marillion would go on to achieve major commercial success with albums including Misplaced Childhood and hit singles such as "Kayleigh," but "Grendel" has never lost its place among the band's most revered compositions. Its scale, literary inspiration and fearless approach to songwriting continue to distinguish it from much of the era’s rock music.

"For me, there's only good and bad in music," Rothery told Louder. "Labels are meaningless, and the true meaning of 'progressive' is music without any self-imposed boundaries. It's having the freedom to work outside the constraints of conventional song structure – almost like a soundtrack type approach to creating songs. It's whatever you want to call it."

More than 40 years after its release, "Grendel" remains one of progressive rock's great overlooked epics. Overshadowed by the band's later chart success, it endures as an early statement of everything that would make Marillion one of the defining progressive rock acts of the 1980s.

In 1976, Cliff Richard released his breakout U.S. hit with “Devil Woman.”

The song, from the British singer’s 18th studio album I’m Nearly Famous, featured an upbeat, catchy melody with surprisingly dark, occult-themed lyrics about a psychic curse. Written by Terry Britten and Christine Authors, the song was a summertime hit for Richard 50 years ago, peaking at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in September 1976.

“Devil Woman" marked a major shift for Richard with its edgier sound, but he wasn’t always in tune with the song’s voodoo vibe.

The devoutly Christian singer once revealed that he changed the lyrics to keep in line with his religious beliefs, making the song a warning to resist temptation instead of a homage to an evil femme fatale.

“Sometimes I've changed the odd lyric,” he once told The Guardian. “I did that with ‘Devil Woman,' added a few little words here and there. I didn't like the idea that it seemed to be about someone dabbling in the occult. So I added, ‘Beware, stay away, you'd better get out of there fast.’  In other words, I used the song as a warning.”

Over the years, Richard used his platform as a singer to share messages about faith. He even began to include gospel songs in his shows as he scaled back on some of the songs that made him famous. But he didn’t cut out “Devil Woman.”

“When I started to do gospel concerts on my own, I made sure that the public knew that I wouldn’t be singing ‘Congratulations,’” Richard told Premier Christianity, referring to one of his biggest British hits. “I explained I wanted to spend the evening with them to sing to them about things that could change their life."

"I did play ‘Devil Woman’ because I got a letter from a woman in Australia," he continued. "She said: ‘My friend wanted to have a séance, and I was thinking the Bible says, ‘don’t get involved, it’s dangerous’, so I gave my friend your ‘Devil Woman’ record.’ The friend wrote back saying: ‘I’ve heeded the warning in the lyrics and I’m not going.’” 

Richard explained, “For me, it was encouraging to think that a pop record could actually help someone. Nobody converts anybody else. God does all that. But if you can put a seed in there, because of the way you speak, or the story you tell, it can touch someone.”

Richard has credited Elton John for helping him find success in North America by signing him to his Rocket record label.  In an interview with Record Collector magazine, Richard revealed that the music legend heard his recording of “Devil Woman” and couldn’t believe it was him.

“He got me my first really big hit – Devil Woman got to No 4 [in Canada],” Richard shared. “He heard I’m Nearly Famous – somebody played it to him but didn’t tell him who it was. … He heard ‘Devil Woman’ and went, ‘Oh my God, this is great stuff, let’s see if we can get it for Rocket.’ And I wasn’t signed in the U.S. with EMI at that moment, so I said, ‘Yes, please, anything you can do.’”

Fueled by the success of “Devil Woman,” Richard described I’m Nearly Famous as a “breakthrough” and a “comeback album” for him.

During an appearance on BBC Breakfast With Frost, Richard revealed that he considered "Devil Woman” to be one of his signature songs despite its underlying darkness.

“If a martian landed here on Earth and we all had to show him what you do, I'd play ‘Devil Woman,’” Richard shared. “’Devil Woman,’ what I  find the perfection on that one is that it's got a great guitar riff, it's kind of heavy in a way, it tells a story and it has a great chorus.”

One of George Strait's most iconic songs from the '80s was actually recorded a decade earlier.

"Amarillo by Morning," which is regarded as one of the country icon's signature songs, was actually first recorded by someone else. Singer Terry Stafford, who co-wrote the track with Paul Fraser, released the original version of the rodeo-themed ballad in 1973 — but it was Strait's rendition that brought the song into the mainstream.

Strait first put out "Amarillo by Morning" in 1982 as part of his second studio album Strait from the Heart, before later releasing the track as a single in January 1983. The following month, it debuted on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart, and later peaked at the No. 4 position in April of that year.

Despite being known as one of Strait's signature songs, "Amarillo by Morning" surprisingly never reached No. 1, becoming one of his only singles to miss the top spot. Strait has had 44 No. 1 hits on the same chart, but "Amarillo by Morning" somehow wasn't one of them.

Still, the classic country ballad isn't just considered one of the most beloved songs from Strait's catalog, but it's also frequently included among some of the most revered songs the entire country genre has to offer.

It's included on Rolling Stone‘s list of the 200 Greatest Country Songs of All Time, where it’s ranked at No. 10, and it also appears on Billboard‘s roundup of the 100 Best Country Songs of All Time, coming in at No. 17 on that list.

"Amarillo by Morning" is also included on the Opry's fan-voted ranking of 100 Greatest Country Songs, alongside other defining tracks from some of the biggest country legends, like George Jones,Randy Travis, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette and more.

In 1977, The Clash released a song that immediately sparked controversy.

"White Riot," the punk band's debut single, was met with resistance from some radio stations that refused to play it because of its provocative title and concerns that its message could be misunderstood. Nearly 50 years later, however, the song is widely recognized as one of the defining recordings of the original British punk movement.

Its message was often mistaken for something it wasn't.

Written by Joe Strummer and Mick Jones, "White Riot" was inspired by the 1976 Notting Hill Carnival riots in London, where Strummer witnessed Black youths confronting police while many white working-class young people remained on the sidelines. Rather than promoting racial division, the song called on disaffected white youth to become more politically engaged and challenge the social inequalities they faced.

"The only thing we're saying about the Blacks is that they've got their problems and they're prepared to deal with them," Strummer told NME. "But white men, they just ain't prepared to deal with them—everything's too cozy."

Released as the lead single from The Clash's self-titled debut album, "White Riot" introduced listeners to the band's raw blend of punk energy and political commentary. Although the single reached only the lower end of the UK charts, it quickly established The Clash as one of the leading voices of the burgeoning punk scene alongside bands like the Sex Pistols and The Damned.

The controversy surrounding the song only heightened its profile.

While some broadcasters declined to air "White Riot" because of its title, many critics and fans came to recognize the song's true intent. Over time, it has become one of The Clash's most discussed recordings, illustrating the band's willingness to tackle difficult social issues through music while refusing to shy away from uncomfortable conversations.

The Clash would go on to expand far beyond punk, incorporating reggae, ska, dub, funk and rockabilly into landmark albums including London Calling and Combat Rock. Yet "White Riot" remains a crucial chapter in the band's story, capturing the urgency and rebellious spirit that first brought them to national attention.

Nearly 50 years after its release, "White Riot" continues to stand as one of punk rock's most influential songs.

"I will never give up," Strummer told Punk Magazine. "Sometimes I feel like it, but never have I ever thought of giving up. Even in the dark days. There was something going on, like a little spark that kept me sane. If I hadn't had that I would've gone into self-pity and misery, but it's because of my mother's blood that I never will give up."

What began as a controversial debut single ultimately became a lasting reminder of The Clash's commitment to challenging convention, even when it came at the cost of misunderstanding.

Southern Gothic is a genre that many of us learned about in high school or college, and is an artistic subgenre in storytelling that is heavily influenced by Gothic rhetoric or elements. And Flannery O’Connor was a defining American novelist and short story writer who “is regarded as a master of the Southern Gothic” writing style, per Britannica. Her stories took place in the rural American South, which, as you may have guessed, is a major aspect of the genre. O’Connor was a devout Roman Catholic, which also showed up a ton in her work and helps with understanding the context of our quote of the day, which dives into some hard truths about stomaching reality.

O’Connor was born Mary Flannery O’Connor on March 25, 1925, in Savannah, GA, and was an only child, per the Flannery O’Connor Childhood Home Museum. She went to Georgia State College for Women, graduating in 1945 with a degree in social science. She then got a journalism scholarship to the University of Iowa, but ended up transferring to the prestigious Iowa Writers' Workshop. Post-college, O’Connor moved to New York City and Connecticut to hopefully get her stories published, but after her diagnosis of lupus in 1951, she had to move back to Georgia to live with her mother on the family farm.

Mary Shelley was a defining literary figure in establishing Gothic horror, with its macabre storytelling. And Southern Gothic took those themes of death, religion, evil and more and set them in the South, adding in the horrors or scenarios that happen there. O’Connor’s expertise in writing this genre gained her acclaim; she was a three-time winner of the O’Henry Award for her stories "Greenleaf" (1957), "Everything That Rises Must Converge" (1963) and "Revelation" (1964). And she won the National Book Award for Fiction posthumously for The Complete Stories, a collection of unpublished works. 

Today’s quote comes from a collection of her letters and highlights the notion that no matter how you feel about the truth of something, you can’t change it.

Quote of the Day by Flannery O’Connor

“The truth does not change according to our ability to stomach it emotionally.”

This quote appears in the book, The Habit of Being: Letters of Flannery O'Connor, which was published in 1980 and edited by O’Connor’s friend, Sally Fitzgerald. It features a collection of over 800 letters written by O’Connor, and spans from 1948, right before her first novel was published, to 1964, a few days before her death. Specifically, this line is in “Part II: Day In and Day Out 1953-1958.”

In the introduction to this section, Fitzgerald writes that these letters came after O’Connor “had come to terms with the way of life circumstances now dictated,” post-diagnosis. As Britannica reported, about a decade before her death, she was diagnosed with lupus, which had been passed down from her father, who also died from the disease when she was 15. This eventually led to her death in August 1964. 

Fitzgerald wrote that O’Connor’s “acceptance was more graceful than merely stoic” regarding her diagnosis and new life changes afterward. She also said that the novelist had learned a new phrase—“passive diminishment,” which means to calmly accept hardships in your life that you cannot change—and instilled it into her life. And even though she worked alone a lot of the time, she still included friends and others in her process in later stages, and was there for friends when they needed her.

In this letter, which was written in the mid-50s, O’Connor is saying that a lot of people are moving away from believing in God, because the existence of God “is not emotionally satisfactory anymore…” But just because people don’t believe in a higher power doesn’t mean that God “ceases to exist,” and she, who does believe, writes our quote: “The truth does not change according to our ability to stomach it emotionally.”

She then writes that such a higher power can confuse humans, and the truth can be revealed to be “hideous, emotionally disturbing, downright repulsive.” She states that faith isn’t meant to be emotionally satisfying, even going one step further, saying those who believe that their faith is such are “repugnant” to O’Connor.

Deeper Meaning of Flannery O’Connor’s Quote—The Truth Doesn’t Change, Even if It's Hard To Accept

O’Connor had a very deep Catholic faith and was willing to believe in something even if it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. Even outside of the context that O’Connor is talking about faith and believing in God, this quote is a good one to remember now and then.

At face value, this quote is saying that there are verifiable and legitimate facts you cannot change, regardless of how you feel about them. Whether those are personal or universal truths, if something is real and true, you can’t change it or not believe it just because it makes you uncomfortable or it's hard to accept. As she writes, just because you can’t handle something emotionally doesn’t make it any less true; it just changes how you grasp that truth. 

Given the context of O’Connor being diagnosed with lupus a few years before this, these words are even more stark or scathing. Even if she doesn’t mean for her sentiment to be harsh, her words depict a harsh reality that, even in the face of inevitable death or lifelong health problems, that fact is still going to remain. 

No matter what life throws at you, most of the time you can’t do anything about actualities. So then it becomes not a matter of changing your plight in life or a situation that just is a reality, but rather how you choose to conduct yourself and your life going forward. Even if you can’t “stomach” it every well, accepting it is a good first step.

Hudson Westbrook’s breakout hit “House Again” has reached a major career milestone, earning a double platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) after surpassing two million units sold in the United States.

According to Country Chord, the song officially received its 2x Platinum certification on June 18, marking another significant achievement for the fast-rising country singer-songwriter. 

The accomplishment comes even though “House Again” never reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, making its commercial success even more notable.

The milestone was formally recognized earlier this year during a celebration at BMI’s Nashville office. During the event, Warner Records Nashville presented Westbrook with a plaque announcing that the single had been certified 2x Platinum by the RIAA.

“I said, ‘Well, I want to write a song about a home that turned into a house again,’” Westbrook recalled, per Billboard. “They were like, ‘Well, that’s the hook.’ Honestly, I didn’t even know if the idea was writable.”

The song follows a narrator moving through a once-loved home after a relationship ends. Each room triggers memories of the person who is gone, creating an emotional story that resonated with fans across the country.

The song’s popularity quickly translated into strong streaming and sales numbers. It accumulated more than 45 million Spotify streams during its early run and eventually became Westbrook’s first major chart hit.

While “House Again” peaked at No. 33 on the Billboard Hot 100, No. 10 on the Hot Country Songs chart, and No. 6 on Country Airplay, it never captured the top position on those rankings. Still, its longevity and fan support helped push the song beyond the two-million-unit threshold.

The double platinum milestone arrives during one of the busiest periods of Westbrook’s career.

In May, BMI celebrated “House Again” as Westbrook’s first-ever chart-topping radio single. The event also honored his co-writers and producers while recognizing the song’s commercial success.

Tom Morello has officially announced new dates for several previously postponed 2026 tour stops after stepping away from the road due to a family medical emergency involving his mother, Mary Morello.

The legendary guitarist, known for his work with Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave, shared the update with fans through Instagram, confirming that rescheduled performances have been secured in Paris, London, Nashville and Milwaukee.

“Paris! London! Nashville! Milwaukee! We have locked in new dates for my previously postponed shows, I’m excited to come rock with you all soon. If you haven’t already secured your tickets, get them now at TomMorello.com,” Morello wrote.

The announcement comes just days after the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee postponed several European appearances to return home and be with his 102-year-old mother during a health scare.

Earlier this week, Morello reassured fans that her condition had improved.

“I am sorry I had to miss a few shows due to my mom’s health. The incredibly resilient, indefatigable Mary Morello at 102 is now feeling somewhat better and has ordered me back into the fray, charging me with rocking you and fighting fascism six strings at a time. I’m on my way and will perform at Pink Pop, and God willing, beyond.”

The newly announced dates replace several postponed headline shows that were originally scheduled for June.

According to the updated schedule, Morello will continue his European festival run before returning for the rescheduled headline concerts later in the year.

His upcoming dates now include:

• June 24 – Copenhell Festival – Copenhagen, Denmark
• June 26 – Tons of Rock Festival – Oslo, Norway
• June 27 – BBK Music Legends Festival – Bilbao, Spain
• June 29 – Bataclan – Paris, France
• June 30 – Electric Brixton – London, United Kingdom
• Sept. 18 – Cannery Hall – The Mainstage – Nashville, Tennessee
• Sept. 20 – The Rave / Eagles Club – Milwaukee, Wisconsin

The Paris and London concerts were among the dates affected by the family emergency, while the newly added U.S. shows provide fans with additional opportunities to see Morello perform later this year.

While several postponed dates have now been rescheduled, Morello revealed that not every affected show could be moved to a new date.

Fans who purchased tickets for those canceled stops will receive automatic refunds through their original point of purchase.

The guitarist has indicated that efforts are already underway to return to those cities in the future.

The tour update arrives during a busy period for Morello. The Grammy-winning musician recently released the new single “Adjourn It,” featuring System of a Down vocalist Serj Tankian and Morello’s 15-year-old son, Roman Morello.

The song will appear on his forthcoming solo album and focuses on themes of justice and resistance.

Beyond his solo music, Morello continues to balance performing with activism. He recently toured alongside Bruce Springsteen and is preparing for the Power To The People Festival, a new event he curated that will take place in October 2026.

For now, fans can look forward to seeing the influential guitarist back on stage as he resumes his international touring schedule following the temporary interruption.
