Elizabeth Hurley Flaunts Toned Abs While Relaxing in the Sand

Fri, 02/02/2024 - 11:27am

Elizabeth Hurley's latest social media thirst trap is sending fans into a frenzy.

The British actress, 58, recently had herself a glamorous photoshoot on the beach to model a new limited edition piece from her swimsuit collection—but everyone's eyes were on Hurley instead.

The stunning snaps shared to Instagram on Thursday, Feb. 1 showed the Austin Powers alum sprawling out in the sand while sporting a light blue sarong designed with a peacock feather pattern. The garment tied around Hurley's neck and opened up at her torso, perfectly highlighting her ultra-toned abs.

Wearing the sarong with just white bikini bottoms, the model's fit figure was on full display, and fans were once again in awe of her age-defying powers.

A post shared by Elizabeth Hurley (@elizabethhurley1)

"Living on the sarong side of the tracks," she cleverly captioned the pics, while directing fans to the link in her bio to purchase the limited edition piece.

But her followers were much more taken with Hurley's undeniable beauty in the shots.

"You are glowing. You could light up the night. I can't think of any better representation of beauty," one commenter wrote.

"You are ageless!," added another, who joked, "It’s starting to annoy me!!"

"You look younger every post" someone else echoed.

It's true that Hurley never seems to age, but she credits everything to her diet and exercise regimen. Just last week, she shared some of her tricks of the trade when it comes to maintaining her figure, including her mantra: "don't eat too much, too fast, too often or too late."

She also makes sure to get in lots of fruits and veggies, and she even has a bread maker to have her own homemade breads.

Hurley's advice also included staying active. Even though she doesn't have a "set exercise" routine, she's "extremely active."

So for everyone wondering how Hurley does it—that's how!

Lionel Richie on How He Covers When He Forgets the Lyrics on Stage

Fri, 02/02/2024 - 11:00am

Who has it better than Lionel Richie right now?

On Jan. 25, the singer’s youngest daughter, Sofia, announced that she’s pregnant with her first child. “It was just a blink ago I was holding her!” he says with a flash of his megawatt smile. “Now she’s calling me on the phone and saying, ‘This is happening.’” It’s a moment of sheer bliss because you can see that look on her face and on [music executive husband] Elliot [Grainge]’s face. They’re in the soup now!”

Cover photo by Ramona Rosales

Then there’s his other baby, The Greatest Night in Pop, which started streaming on Netflix on Jan. 29. And make no mistake: The documentary is sheer bliss for anyone who loves music, A-list celebrities and a worthwhile cause (even better if you remember the 1980s). Richie is an executive producer and key narrator of the film, which chronicles the making of the Grammy-winning 1985 charity single “We Are the World.”

It says something about Richie’s considerable stature that “We Are the World” is one of many milestones in a legendary career. The Tuskegee, Ala., native started out in the early 1970s as a member of the R&B group The Commodores. He went solo in the 1980s and promptly earned his first of four Grammys (for the ballad “Truly”). His 1983 album, Can’t Slow Down, sold 39 million copies and won the Grammy for Album of the Year. He'll be a presenter at this year's ceremony airing Feb. 4 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.

On the cusp of turning 75 in June, Richie still, well, can’t slow down. A proud father (to entrepreneur Nicole, 42, and model Sofia, 25) and grandfather (to Nicole and rocker Joel Madden’s kids Harlow, 16, and Sparrow, 13), he’s hitting the road this summer for a tour with Earth, Wind & Fire. He also starts his seventh season as a judge with Katy Perry and Luke Bryan on American Idol starting Feb. 18 on ABC.

“He’s a pop icon, right?” says Bao Nguyen, The Greatest Night in Pop director who introduced the film alongside Richie for its premiere at the recent 40th annual Sundance Film Festival. “I’ve seen him in concert a couple of times in the past year, and he knows how to command a stage.”

To top it all off, Nguyen adds, “He’s generous and thoughtful and loves telling great stories.”

To be sure, Richie tells plenty of those stories in the documentary, sharing in fascinating detail—along with participants such as Bruce Springsteen, Cyndi Lauper and Dionne Warwick—how on a January evening in 1985, dozens of artists checked their egos at the door and pulled an all-nighter for the worthwhile cause of African famine relief. Bob Dylan showed his nerves; Stevie Wonder tried to tweak the lyrics. Prince, meanwhile, was a touch-and-go no-show. “We walked in the studio as some very hot-shot polished assassins and we left a family,” says Richie, who co-wrote the song with Michael Jackson. The recording raised more than $63 million.

Over Zoom from L.A. on a late Friday afternoon—just two days before the 39th anniversary of the “We Are the World” recording session—a chatty Richie tells all for this week’s Parade cover story.

Mara Reinstein: “We Are the World” won the Grammy for Song of the Year in 1986. As we approach the 2024 awards, what do you remember about that night?

Lionel Ritchie: You have all your peers in the audience and surprisingly enough, they all voted for you. How about that? Somebody has to lose but the vote was for us! It’s a wonderful confirmation because this is the Grammys. The Recording Academy is a hardcore group and they have to believe in what you’re doing. So that really meant a lot to us. Michael kept saying “You talk first.” And I went “No, you talk first!” We weren’t sure how to navigate such a huge moment.

When you’re writing a song, is the ultimate goal for it to reach No. 1 or win a prestigious award?

The top priority is how many people can sing this song without me. When you’re driving down the street and you hear it, you need to be able to sing every lyric. In other words, it’s familiar. If I’m in the middle of the stage and I forget the lyrics, there’s a wonderful period where I go “Come on, everybody.” And they’re singing louder than I am. That’s why you write the song.

That’s kind of an unexpected answer, but it makes sense.

Don’t get me wrong—right after that, it’s how many records did we sell and where’s the check!

Is “All Night Long” still the go-to?

It’s a go-to. But excuse me? I’m walking down the street and every day someone says [the name of his 1984 hit] “Hello.” I walk into a doctor’s office and they “Hello—oh, I’m sorry, Mr. Richie. I didn’t mean that.”

Seriously, Adele released her song “Hello” and people still thought of your version from decades earlier.

I heard people going “What are you going to do? She stole ‘Hello!’” And I had to say, “No, she didn’t steal ‘Hello.’ I don’t own the word ‘Hello’!’” You know what it is? When you have songs people sing every day, you kind of own that lane. That’s a compliment.

What was so great about being a huge star during the ‘80s?

I’m so glad I made it when I did. We didn’t have to worry about finding me on Instagram or TikTok or YouTube. You just had to hear me on the radio. There was a uniqueness to the voice. Prince didn’t sound like Michael Jackson. Don’t get me wrong—everybody can sing their hearts out now but I can’t identify the voices.

Surely you see it on American Idol—even singers with national TV exposure have a tough time breaking through. There’s only one Kelly Clarkson.

I see it every day. Congratulations, you can sing. Now who are you? What the contestants don’t understand is that I’m not looking for singers; I’m looking for stylists. If Willie Nelson is on Idol, every song is going to sound like Willie Nelson. Because the truth is that today everybody can do vocal acrobatics! I say it to Luke and Katy says it to me all the time—we wouldn’t want to compete with those singers on the stage. Thank God we have songs we can use and thank God we are who we are.

What were your original expectations of doing the show?

I did not know what it was going to be. When Simon [Cowell] was there, he kept on asking me to do the show and I was touring. All of a sudden, all these years later, it’s the greatest thing I’ve ever done because now I can give advice. I get to explain that it’s about survival. Can you take the pressure of “no”? Because you’re going to hear “no” a million times before you hear “yes.” I brought in “Three Times a Lady” and I was told it was garbage because nobody wanted to hear a waltz in the middle of funk. Nobody wanted to hear “All Night Long” because it was calypso.

Working on The Greatest Night in Pop, what kind of memories were stirred up?

It was just a flood of everything. My job was to be the hall monitor and make sure it all got done. At 5 o’clock in the morning, we were all in terror. It wasn’t until 7 until I got the feeling that we could land the plane. But I did get my list [of autographs]. I don’t have everyone, though. I think I missed Billy Joel.

What was it like watching your friend and collaborator, Michael Jackson at the height of his fame?

You have to understand something. I live in this world of “Nah, it didn’t happen.” It took this documentary to bring me back into some kind of reality where I can go Holy cow, Michael is not here. But watching Michael brought me back to who he is and what that night was all about.

Why did you get the first line of the song?

Because the line was in my vocal comfort zone. I get a phone call saying Bruce Springsteen is on board. Then Tina [Turner] comes onboard. Then Steve Perry comes on board and he sings above, above the zone. So where would I feel comfortable with all these people? I’m coming in first. I’m no fool!

Beyond the charity aspect, what really made “We Are the World” so special?

You’ve got the greatest vocalists in the world, but we still had to remind Bob Dylan to sing like Bob Dylan! No one will ever put that vulnerability into anything today. You won’t see somebody say, “I’m not sure about this.” But everyone dropped their guard. You saw the real deal. Nothing was manufactured that got cleaned up later.

So you don’t think the likes of Beyoncé and Taylor Swift could ever get together for a big group single?

No, no, no. So many things have just changed. You could never get that much star power and ego standing next to each other without the manager, the agent, the makeup artists. And they’d have to learn the song on the spot! It’s never going to happen. We were standing in a circle and facing each other and had to be brilliant for just a half a line. We were all scared to death! Poor Huey Lewis was in between Michael Jackson and Cyndi Lauper and going “Guys, you’re killing me!”

How old were you when you did your first paying gig?

I was probably 19. The Commodores was it. I went on stage and the joke was that the curtains opened and I walked off with the curtains. I didn’t realize I had to be in the middle of the stage. And I was not the singer—I was the saxophone player. Actually, I was the saxophone holder because I just had to hit three notes. We started out in clubs and really had to learn how to perform. Unlike today, nobody would just put us on stage at Madison Square Garden. It’s hard to handle that. That’s why so many singers have 40 dancers around them; it’s to distract you from the singing!

In your Hall of Fame speech, you thanked your family for supporting you even when you weren’t around. What’s the dynamic like now?

It’s a two-fold thing. Yes, there are moments when I walk in the door and go, I need to spend more time with my family because I missed this opportunity. Yes, I was there for Thanksgivings, but as time went on, the rocket got faster. But there are also days when I walk in and go, “You guys have any idea who I am? You can’t talk to me like that!” I want to flex my muscles. But I have to say, the most satisfying words you’ll ever hear in your whole life is “I love you, Dad.”

Do your two grandkids see you in concert a lot?

They know how to work it! They bring the whole class to the concert and we don’t care. They’re so cool about it. Their friends are backstage going crazy and my grandkids are just going, “That’s Pop-Pop. We see him every day.”

“We Are the World” happened before they were born, of course. So, was there a big family screening of the documentary?

I can’t take too much more “before you were born.” So, I’ll tell you. I knew things were serious when I got invited to Sparrow’s class. They’re having famous musicians and songwriters visit for the day, and of course they’re going to bring in Sparrow’s Pop-Pop. And the kids were singing “We Are the World!” They knew the words by heart. That’s what Michael and I set out to do.

Where do you keep all your awards and gold records?

My museum is my library. Every once in a while, I walk in and close the door and think, OK, where was I in ’74? Boom. Where was I in ’84? Boom. It’s just a reminder that the rocket is still flying but that I’m also so blessed and grateful. To have a career that lasts decades and to have 9-year-olds who watch me on Idol stop me and go “Lionel!” is just crazy.

What are your thoughts on retirement?

Retirement is when God says, “That’s it. Lionel, thank you very much. Come on home.” My philosophy when I first got into the business was OK, the light is green. How much money can you take out of the bank or how many things can you put in the grocery cart before it turns red? For me, it’s how many songs can I write? How many tours can I go on? How many things can I do before it turns red? I’m not going to do some stupid thing like retire while the light is still green!

Sam's Club's Popular 16-Piece Fluted Crystal Drinkware Set Is On Sale for $8, and Fans Can't Believe the Deal Is This Good

Fri, 02/02/2024 - 11:00am

While entertaining friends in your home, there are few things that will impress your guests immediately like a new set of high quality drinkware. The glass in which a beverage is served says a lot about a person, and the last thing you need while enjoying an evening with friends is to be teased for serving alcohol in those old mismatched cups that have been sitting in the cupboard forever.

Last November, we learned about an incredible set of fluted crystal drinkware created by Member’s Mark, the popular in-house brand under the Sam’s Club umbrella, which doubled as the perfect gift for upcoming white elephant parties. At the time, the Member’s Mark 16-Piece Fluted Crystal Drinkware Set was conveniently priced for the holidays at an affordable $19.98 — a price that originally seemed too good to be true.

As we continue into the new year, however, it seems as though Sam’s Club has further plans for this gorgeous set of crystal. Whether the retailer received a restock or found some extra sets lying around is currently unclear, but those who wished they snagged a set last year can now get their hands on a set for just $7.91.

This 16-piece fluted crystal drinkware set features a lead-free design that is both easy to clean and dishwasher safe. The set is not only beautiful, but also perfect for any occasion — especially a family dinner, cocktail party, wedding or any other event where the glasses can complement your guest's best dressed attire. The set comes with eight 16-ounce tumblers and eight 12-ounce highball glasses that can truly be used for any cold beverage or cocktail.

If ever you had doubts about taking the plunge on a new set of drinkware to add the rest of your pieces at home, now would be the time to throw caution to the wind and make that purchase. A sale like this is not likely to last long, as supplies will certainly be dwindling quickly, so act accordingly while you simultaneously make room in your cupboard for this gorgeous set of drinkware.

Eagle-Eyed Fan Spots Travis Kelce on a Box of Hair Dye

Fri, 02/02/2024 - 10:52am

Travis Kelce: record-breaking Kansas City Chiefs tight end, two-time Super Bowl champ, Taylor Swift's boyfriend and male haircare brand ambassador?

At some point in his career, the 34-year-old signed on as a "Top Tiered Ambassador" for Fat Joe's celebrity-endorsed hair color and haircare brand, ReWind It 10. Still, somehow, we all missed the memo until a fan saw the packaging in the wild and uploaded a photo of it to Reddit.

The photo was shared to the New Heights podcast subreddit on Thursday, Feb. 1, alongside the headline, "Did a double take at the beauty supply store-."

"I was strolling the aisles of the beauty supply store this AM, and I had to check this box twice," the author continued in the caption, "Out of the corner of my eye (full transparency: I’m pretty blind and wear glasses), I saw what I thought was Trav. 😂"

"Long lost cousin maybe? Hawking that men’s hair color. 🤭," the original poster (OP) joked, still not realizing it was the NFL star on the box. "Just wanted to share."

View the original article to see embedded media.

It didn't take long for others to point out OP's mistake, confirming that the image on the box was that of Kelce.

"I'm pretty sure it's him? In the bottom left corner there's a signature and it says Travis Kelce. Why he's on hair color boxes js beyond me though," one wrote before another replied to tell them Kelce is "an official ambassador for the brand," a little detail Parade confirmed.

"He is literally everywhere," another joked.

"International 92%er who doesn't come across stuff like this in their day-to-day life, appreciate you sharing with non-Americans the sort of random s--t a football star will be on the box," a third giddily shared. "Please order those glasses though 😭."

"Saw the 87 right away lol. I mean he looks real good in this picture..." someone else admitted. "I'd buy it for My hubby if he needed it!"

Well, reader, if you or someone you know wants to get their hands on it, you're in luck. Not only can you find it in your local beauty supply store but online for a one-time purchase of $14.99.

What is Taylor-Con and Is Taylor Swift Involved?

Fri, 02/02/2024 - 10:47am

Swifties unite! Not only is the Eras Tour resuming this year, but a convention with Taylor Swift-themed events is also happening. The two-day gathering—which the Grammy winner is not affiliated with—was originally titled "Taylor-Con," but is now being billed as the "Celebration and Dance Party." Explaining the name change, the event page noted that "about a month after we got the ball rolling, the name TAYLOR-CON was trademarked by Taylor's team," adding, "That was both VERY exciting for us (we hope she has an official TAYLOR-CON planned, because then we can ALL go to it!) and also very concerning here."

While it's no longer dubbed Taylor-Con, the event, "in an effort to continue the spirit without invoking the trademarks," is keeping the same schedule, but "removing the catchy references."

So, if you're ready for it, here is everything to know about the convention formerly known as Taylor-Con.

When is the convention previously known as Taylor-Con?

The two-day event, now called the Celebration and Dance Party, is happening March 15 and March 16.

Where is the convention previously known as Taylor-Con?

The convention is being held at the Hilton Dallas Lincoln Centre in Dallas.

What is the convention previously known as Taylor-Con?

The convention was originally described as a "2-day event and dance party in a convention setting for fans of our one and only Lady of the Eras, Taylor Swift!" Following the name change, the event is said to be a "gathering of fans to come together in a friendly environment with family and friend building activities."

What will happen at the convention previously known as Taylor-Con?

According to the event page, there will be "many Taylor themed events, next-to-none of them are family or community building, which is what we're going for." The activities will include dance parties, a costume catwalk, trivia, coloring contests, scavenger hunts, a lip sync contest, swap meet, bracelet exchanges and more!

How much are tickets for the convention previously known as Taylor-Con?

Unfortunately, ticket sales have ended on Eventbrite

What is Taylor-Con?

TMZ reported on Feb. 1 that TAS Rights Management, LLC had filed an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to trademark "TAYLOR-CON." Guitar picks, fan club services and "arranging, organizing, conducting and hosting social entertainment events" are among the goods and services that the "applicant has a bona fide intention, and is entitled, to use the mark in commerce on or in connection with the identified goods/services."

That prompted some fans to assume that perhaps Taylor Swift herself was behind the so-called Taylor-Con event being planned in Dallas. However, that was not the case. That event is now known as the Celebration and Dance Party and tickets are no longer available.

Fri, 02/02/2024 - 10:40am

Mariah Carey is doing what she does best (singing aside)—rocking an absolutely glamorous look.

The "Always Be My Baby" songstress stepped out for the 2024 Recording Academy Honors presented by The Black Music Collective at Fairmont Century Plaza on Thursday, Feb. 01 in Los Angeles, Calif., appearing as stunning as ever in a champagne-colored dress.

The ensemble featured a satin corseted bodysuit top with a brown sheer tulle wrap skirt bottom that gathered in a large bow at the waist. She accessorized with glitzy jewelry and pointed-toe pumps, while the look was pulled together with a chic beauty look comprised of smoky eye makeup and a glossy lip, as her golden blonde hair laid neatly across her shoulders, side-parted in soft waves.

In photos from the red carpet of the event, the 54-year-old flashed her pearly whites for cameras, posing and commanding attention in the head-turning outfit.

During the ceremony, Carey was honored with the Global Impact Award for her  personal and professional achievements over the course of her lengthy span of success in the industry.

While hitting the stage to accept her award, which was presented to her by Stevie Wonder, she spoke out about breaking barriers and not conforming to industry standards placed on her at the start of her career.

“I was not encouraged to focus on my love for Black music,” she said. “It took countless arguments, endless tantrums and mostly, unwavering determination."

The 5-time Grammy winner continued, after also pointing out the first day of Black History Month: “But eventually, I was able to unveil my authentic self and create music from my heart. In doing so, I discovered a new sense of freedom and fulfillment.”

Dad's Strong Message to Men Criticizing Taylor Swift Goes Viral for All the Right Reasons

Fri, 02/02/2024 - 10:36am

The overall public perception of Taylor Swift may be a lot more positive than it was a few years ago, but, unfortunately, there will probably always be a selection of "Dads, Chads and Brads" who don't know how to bite their tongues.

Now, one dad is speaking out against those critics—specifically, the ones who seem to hate her for nothing more than "existing"—for the poor example it sets for young girls. The vitriol has grown ever since she went public with her relationship with Travis Kelce in Sept. 2023, with football fans accusing her of "ruining" the game by distracting both players and fans.

Robert People, a retired military journalist, author and father, recently went viral on TikTok when he called out the "ridiculous hate" that he sees come mostly from "grown men."

"Keep in mind, Taylor Swift’s not gonna see or hear any of that," he pointed out. "But you know who will? Your daughters.” People suggested that that kind of commentary would "encourage your daughters to shrink themselves" and "reduce who they are" to avoid getting " a whole lot of hate from not only the world, but from people just like you: their own parents," just for being themselves.

@peoplescourt79

Taylor Swift won’t see it, but your daughters will. Do better. #taylorswift #nfl #traviskelce #girls #men #hate #chiefs #embarrassing #robertpeople #authorrobertpeople #silly #jealousy

♬ original sound - Author Robert People

Many adult women thanked the dad for speaking out.

"You made this grown woman cry, sir! 🥰 Thank you for this, the world needs more humans like you in it," one wrote.

"Thank you for this. We are made to feel silly constantly and it’s paramount to have people around who validate and encourage! 👏," another said.

In a new interview with Today.com, he elaborated on the impact that that kind of thought process can have on girls who look up to the "Fearless" songstress, like his 16-year-old daughter.

"My daughter watches football with me and pays attention to everything I do," he told the publication, noting that complaints about her doing something as simple as attending a football game to support her boyfriend can translate to, "Everything that Taylor Swift is, I can't be," for young fans.

It can also affect girls who are interested in sports, leading them to question if they "really belong here" in a space traditionally dominated by men.

On the flip side, People pointed out in a follow-up video that young boys will see the way their fathers speak about female celebrities, too, and use it as the road map for their own futures and the way they'll speak about women.

"If you don't know much about her, then don't say anything. She's a human being and people reduce her humanity," People told the outlet.

Luckily, there are plenty of dads out there who are thrilled to see their daughters developing an interest in the NFL thanks to Swift's involvement—so much so that Vivid Seats is offering up a pair of Super Bowl tickets to one father-daughter duo that has bonded over Chiefs games these last few months.

Fans Rally Behind Country Singer Darius Rucker After Drug Arrest

Fri, 02/02/2024 - 10:18am

Darius Rucker's fans are coming to his defense.

The outpouring of support followed news that the Hootie & the Blowfish frontman was arrested in Williamson County, Tennessee, on Thursday, Feb. 1, and booked on three misdemeanor charges, which included two counts of simple possession/casual exchange of a controlled substance and one count of a violation of the state's vehicle registration law, the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office.

Though authorities did not identify the controlled substance or exactly what led to the arrest, law enforcement officials told TMZ the 57-year-old musician had expired tags on his car. After he was taken into police custody and booked on the minor charges, Rucker was released on a $10,500 bond.

Rucker's attorney has since shared the following statement with numerous outlets, "Darius Rucker is fully cooperating with authorities related to misdemeanor charges."

While the rocker-turned-country crooner's fans don't know for certain what drugs the musician was allegedly found with, they speculated it was most likely marijuana and slammed the naysayers–who included his ex Kate Quigley, who called him a "d-bag" and the situation related to his "karma" in statements she shared via X (formerly Twitter).

"Are these 'drugs' also called marijuana?" one Instagram user asked.

"Give him a damn break. It’s legal in some states. Darius is a great guy," a second wrote.

Similar comments read, "Just legalize weed already" and "legalize weed," both nods to the fact that the substance is still illegal in Tennessee, where he was arrested.

"Leave him Alone!!!!" another exclaimed.

"Will y’all just leave Darius Rucker alone and let him smoke his weed," someone else shared. "You don’t need to arrest anyone for weed anymore. We have bigger issues for law enforcement to tackle."

A different social media user begged in part, "Stop [arresting] folks for weed!!!"

"Save Hootie! #notacriminal #nationaltreasure #DariusRucker," another added.

Punxsutawney Phil’s 2024 Groundhog Day Prediction Results in Series of Wild Memes

Fri, 02/02/2024 - 9:48am

Today is Groundhog Day, meaning the national spotlight has been placed on Punxsutawney Phil.

Every year, people wake up at the crack of dawn in hopes that the resident groundhog forecaster will tell them the cold and dark winter season will come to an end sooner rather than later.

The annual event is no stranger to memes, either, with social media users sharing mildly threatening jokes in the hours leading up to Punxsutawney Phil's big moment.

Take this one, for example, which took the heartbreaking scene from Anchorman when a motorcyclist (played by Jack Black) kicked Ron Burgundy's (Will Ferrell) dog Baxter off the bridge and added new context, "Me to Punxsutawney Phil if he sees his shadow."

— New Jack City (@newJackkcity) February 2, 2024

Or this one, which screengrabbed a moment in The Sopranos that showed Tony (James Gandolfini) disheveled and exhausted, alongside the caption "Punxsutawney Phil being dragged out of bed to see if he can see his shadow."

"oh yeah, it's uh-- early spring. Whatever. A salut'." pic.twitter.com/bLHShDkSd2

— The Sopranos Guy™ (@uncle_june) February 2, 2024

Despite Punxsutawney Phil not seeing his shadow and predicting an early spring–the preferred option for many–internet users still found a way to make this year's results into memes.

Martha Stewart’s Fellow Former Inmates Shed New Light on Her Prison Time

Fri, 02/02/2024 - 9:40am

With Martha Stewart in her thirst trap era, it's easy to forget that, not so long ago, she was in her prison era.

Now, several of her fellow former inmates are offering a firsthand glimpse into her time in the big house—which totaled only five months after she was found guilty of one count of conspiracy, two counts of making false statements, and one count of obstruction of agency proceedings in 2004.

In a preview of the final episode of the CNN miniseries The Many Lives of Martha Stewart, which is set to air this Sunday, Feb. 4, obtained by People, her friends from the minimum-security prison are dishing on the time spent with the beloved homemaker–and, of course, there was plenty of food involved, and another broken rule or two.

Meg Phipps recalled Stewart once having dessert delivered to her at Alderson Federal Prison Camp in West Virginia, after the two began to communicate with one another by handwritten notes.

"Someone from that cottage or dorm, you had to wait for someone to take that in for you,” she remembered. One day, Stewart reached out, sending a pie along with her note suggesting the two meet in person.

“She also sent that note with a baked apple, which meant she had already tackled the idea of cooking in your dorm or cottage by using the microwave and what resources that you could find — because the baked apple had caramel on it and probably some cinnamon,” Phipps said. “I suspect some of this may have come from the cafeteria, which we’re not supposed to do.”

But, according to Susan Spry, who was also incarcerated during that time, “Everyone smuggles food out of kitchens. I mean what else are you going to make?”

Spry also offered some insight into Stewart's prison duties, which, despite her expertise, did not fall within the kitchen. Instead, she worked as custodial staff in the administration building. “She kept it clean. She cleaned toilets. She cleaned the warden’s toilet,” Spry said.

Elizabeth Walker, a former supervisory chaplain at Alderson, added that Stewart was also responsible for sweeping the floors and taking out the trash, noting that "she was very good" at her job—an effort, perhaps, to impress those she was living with for the time being.

Walker recalled a speech Stewart gave at Christmastime, where "she wrote about what peace is." Despite having had her own television shows, Stewart's hands shook as she spoke to the crowd. "She wanted to do a good job for the women she was with…that impressed me,” she admitted.

When her release date rolled around, the group held a potluck to send her off—including a dessert made by Stewart herself.

“We brought different dishes, but Martha did bring a caramel flan, and I don’t know how she made it,” Phipps remembered. “It’s a big part about what made prison tolerable is that fellowship of cooking and celebrating someone going home. She thanked people for making her time there go as well as it did.”

Though today Stewart is BFFs with the one and only Snoop Dogg, Spry hopes to reconnect with her "prison friend." Upon her release, she remembered Stewart saying, "I don’t think I had enough time with you girls...I will see you again." She's "still waiting," but knows it will happen someday.

Aldi Is Selling a $20 Belgian Waffle Maker—But It Won't Be Around for Long

Considered by many as the most important meal of the day, breakfast is far more than just eggs, bacon and toast, or a bowl of your favorite granola and yogurt combo. It is a way of life. The fact that breakfast has the ability to hit the spot no matter what time of day should tell you all you need to know about how highly regarded it truly is.

Heidi Klum Shares Straightforward Opinion of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s Romance

Fri, 02/02/2024 - 9:08am

Heidi Klum has purchased a first-class ticket aboard the hype train dedicated to Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift, and she couldn't be more "here for it."

During a new interview with Fox News Digital to promote her new single, "Sunglasses at Night," the publication couldn't resist deviating from the music talk to draw out Klum's opinion on the hottest topic in the world (or at least seemingly so): Tayvis.

Despite being an "outsider" in the relationship, the model has enjoyed watching things blossom between the two ever since they went public in Sept. 2023.

"One never knows what happens behind a closed door, but what is there for us to see, it looks like a beautiful love fest," she said. "It's so nice seeing both of them smile. It's also, like, such an amazing combination. I'm just here for it, I love it."

It's the trendy thing to talk about these days, so everyone's putting their opinion out there, from Kelce's fellow NFL players and sportscasters to the likes of Jessie James Decker and even Larry David and Whoopie Goldberg—though the latter two are clearly over it.

Here at Parade, we're in adjoining seats with the America's Got Talent judge, and can't wait to see Swift stop by the Super Bowl to support her beau—at least, so we hope—in what would be her 13th game of the season.

There's no confirmation of her attendance, but we're feeling pretty good about the odds—we're even pretty sure we know what she's going to be wearing for the big game!

'Argylle' Has So Many Twists M. Night Shyamalan Could Call It 'Too Much'

Fri, 02/02/2024 - 8:36am

While this has not been explicitly stated anywhere, I can only assume that Argylle was created solely with the Guinness Book of World Records' "Most Twists in a Motion Picture" award in mind. The spy thriller from Kingsman creator Matthew Vaughn delivers its first big reveal around the movie's halfway point and then proceeds to reveal and reveal and reveal and reveal as if it's a drag queen competing in the final lip sync of RuPaul's Drag Race. Unfortunately, as with drag queens shedding layers of clothing on their way to spandex unitard, Argylle's twists deliver diminishing returns with each additional "but wait, there's more."

But perhaps we're getting ahead of ourselves. Argylle is the latest star-studded effort from from Vaughn and opens with your standard James Bond/Mission: Impossible style antics. Henry Cavill plays a dashing secret agent named Aubrey Argylle who is attempting to bring down an evil organization known as the Directorate. He's assisted by his bestie Wyatt (John Cena, in Hawaiian shirts) and their techie sidekick Keira (Ariana DeBose, doing very little of the thing). While on a Grecian mission to get a computer file from LaGrange (Dua Lipa, or Dula Peep if you're Wendy Williams), however, the story ends because this is all actually just the plot of a bestselling spy novel. The story we've been watching is actually from an Argylle novel written by hit sensation Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard).

Elly, who lives with her cat in a secluded, writerly abode, is putting the finishing touches on the fifth Argylle novel, but her overbearing mother (Catherine O'Hara) is frustrated that the novel includes yet another cliffhanger. She invites Elly to visit and discuss wrapping up the series. However, on a train ride to visit her mom, Elly is attacked by numerous assailants and saved by a secret agent named Aidan (Sam Rockwell), who explains that the events in Elly's books mirror events in the real life spy world. Now evil organizations are trying to kidnap her and use her as a type of crime oracle. What ensues is two hours of a cat-and-and mouse game with Elly and Aidan trying to solve the mystery of where a secret USB drive is before the baddies.

If this plot seems kind of silly and contrived, that's because it is, but Argylle bravely (and near perfectly) executes one of my favorite bait-and-switch tactics in which a movie is willing to start out bad in order for the twist to make it genius. When the first twist is revealed and everything snaps into place, my internal rating bumped the previously C-level film up to an A. Unfortunately, as the last hour labored through 40 more twists, my hard-earned affection began to dwindle.

Argylle's bungling of what could have been a successful ending, however, is just the latest in a string of such endeavors for Vaughn. After making a name for himself with Kick-Ass and successfully rebooting the X-Men franchise with First Class, Vaughn surprised many with the unexpected success of Kingsman: The Secret Service in 2014. The February release blew up the box office, earned raves from critics and immediately garnered a sequel. Since then, however, Vaughn has continued to misunderstand what made that film great, opting to kill off the original's most beloved character and cram The Golden Circle with bloated, CGI-laded fight scenes and over-the-top shenanigans that lacked heart. The sequel performed poorly, and The King's Man, a prequel about the founding of the British spy organization, ground the franchise to a halt with poor reviews and a beleaguered box office. Both of the follow-ups relied too heavily on so-outlandish-they're-somehow-boring fight scenes and not-as-clever-as-they-think-they-are twists.

While Argylle on the surface is a completely different franchise and is not written by Vaughn (it's written by Ice Age: Continental Drift's screenwriter Jason Fuchs), it suffers from all the same problems as the ancillary Kingsman movies. In an attempt to outdo the Gazelle vs. Eggsy and Colin Firth church fight scenes in Secret Service, Argylle includes two action sequences trying so hard to be interesting that they're inexplicable. A smoke-bomb dance number and an oil slick ice-skating tribute both make little sense and look horrible thanks to cheap visual effects. Ironically, Vaughn's best fight scene (The King's Man's Rasputin battle) is just two people in a room and succeeds based on character dynamics, choreography and music without an abundance of special effects.

Related: How to Watch Every 2024 Oscar Nominee (Including the Shorts)

Similarly, the plot of Secret Service is fairly straightforward compared to Argylle, but relies heavily on well-drawn characters that the audience immediately latches onto. Argylle seems unable to trust its leads to carry the story and so attempts to prop them up with dozens of plot points and bizarre set pieces. That's really not needed though. Bryce Dallas Howard (who seems a magnet to ill-fated projects) is well cast as Elly. She and Rockwell have delightful banter, and the supporting cast, including Dua Lipa, Catherine O'Hara and Bryan Cranston perform strongly. Even Ariana DeBose and Sofia Boutella, who have maybe five minutes of screen time combined, bring a little extra zazz to the movie.

There really is plenty to love here. The initial premise is smart. The needle drops overlayed on the fight scenes (especially in the train) add energy. There are plenty of funny zinger's from O'Hara and Conway's backpack cat is cute. It all just gets cluttered and confused as the movie tries to do too much.

Related: And the 2024 Oscar Nominees Are...

Perhaps this can all be summed up with two examples of how Argylle's lack of clarity keeps shooting itself in the foot. First, in the post-credit scene (SPOILERS TO FOLLOW), we see a young man enter a bar called The King's Man, where he receives a gun and is called "Aubrey Argylle." We then get a sign card that states a new movie about Book One of the Argylle series is coming. Presumably this means that Argylle is actually a Kingsman agent, and that we'll be getting a crossover film about a young Argylle in the Kingsman sometime in the future. But the whole thing is opaque and confusing given the "book in a movie" plot device. So the upcoming movie would be a movie based on a fake novel that is in a movie that is actually tied into another movie franchise...but then does the Kingsman agency only exist in the fictional book world created by Elly Conway? Seemingly not, because in The King's Man, they're doing battle with actual historical figures.

This confusion also bore itself out in a real world saga involving Taylor Swift in which Swifties believed a real world Argylle novel, with the author listed as Elly Conway, was actually written by Swift. While this was revealed to be a movie-tie-in prop that's "written" by the fictional character Elly Conway (i.e. a ghost writer in real life posing as the fictional movie character), it caused massive confusion online when people thought the movie was based on the book and that somehow Swift was behind both properties.

While Argylle may be smarter than its trailer sets it up to be, it's never quite as clever as its creators think it is. Rather, it devolves into a cluttered landscape of mystery and muddle that will leave audiences asking "WTF?"

Who Does Brandon Eliminate in This Week's 'Farmer Wants a Wife'?

Fri, 02/02/2024 - 8:14am

The Season 2 premiere of Farmer Wants a Wife saw four bachelors go on speed dates with eight women each to figure out which five ladies (per guy!) they wanted to take back to their respective farms.

Among the single-and-ready-to-mingle cowboys is Brandon Rogers, 29, a potato and barley farmer who hails from small-town Colorado (where the nearest airport is four hours away).

Which three ladies did he eliminate in Week 1? (Or, as some might say, Which three ladies dodged a bullet?) Keep reading to find out.

Do We Have a Longer Winter? All About Groundhog Day 2024

Fri, 02/02/2024 - 8:06am

Get answers to your most burning questions about the adorable but truly bizarre holiday, starting with the obvious: When is Groundhog Day? And did the groundhog see his shadow in 2024?

Related: Celebrate Groundhog Day With These 10 Cute and Easy Crafts for Kids

When is Groundhog Day?

Groundhog Day is on Feb. 2 every year. In 2024, Groundhog Day is on a Friday.

What is Groundhog Day?

On Groundhog Day, the world looks to Punxsutawney Phil, a groundhog, to tell us if we're in for a long and dreadful remainder of winter or if we can expect spring-like weather to come sooner. If Phil sees his shadow, we can expect more cold, dreary weather, and if he doesn't, early spring is allegedly on the horizon.

Did the groundhog see his shadow in 2024?

While Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow on Groundhog Day 2023, meaning a longer winter last year, this year, the groundhog says we should be expecting an early spring!

It's a big deal that the groundhog did not see his shadow in 2024, especially because according to York Daily Record, there's always a higher chance that he'll see his shadow (since his record shows more shadow-seeing than not seeing his shadow).

How did Groundhog Day start?

It is believed that Groundhog Day has its origins in the Christian tradition of Candlemas Day, which would take place halfway between the first day of winter and the vernal equinox (the first day of spring). It was believed that if Candlemas took place on a day with clear, pleasant weather, it was actually indicative of a long winter to come, and clergy members would distribute candles to worshipers in different sizes depending on what the weather prediction was. Hedgehogs would be used to further predict the weather, and German settlers brought the tradition to Pennsylvania.

The first Groundhog Day of known record in the United States was in 1886, and the first celebration of it was in 1887 in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Groundhogs were hired as our meteorologists stateside simply because they were much more common here than the other critters—and the typical hibernation cycle for male groundhogs ends in early February when they emerge from their burrows to find mates.

Related: The Real Origin of Groundhog Day

Where is the groundhog kept?

On the 364 days when Punxsutawney Phil isn't working (sweet job if you can get it!), he lives in a terrarium called Phil's Burrow inside the Punxsutawney Library.

Where does Groundhog Day take place?

Punxsutawney Phil checks for his shadow at Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania each year. However, other localities may have their own groundhogs and celebrations as well.

Are there other famous groundhogs besides Punxsutawney Phil?

There are several other groundhogs with their own Groundhog Day traditions.

Staten Island Chuck

Staten Island Chuck, New York City's resident meteorologist groundhog, is particularly famous for biting then-Mayor Mike Bloomberg's finger in 2009.

In 2014, Chuck was secretly replaced by his daughter, Charlotte. New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio dropped Charlotte, and she tragically died days later, though the zoo insisted the fall did not predicate her passing.

Dunkirk Dave

Another New Yorker, Dunkirk Dave, is famous upstate for her—yes, her—predictions. Dunkirk Dave's real name is Sidewinder, and her owner, Bob Will, said of her talent, "I have used a groundhog for over 58 years to predict the coming of spring weather. Dunkirk Dave is the second-longest predicting groundhog. Also, the only animal honored on the calendar is the groundhog."

Thistle the Whistlepig

Thistle the Whistlepig lives in Cleveland, Ohio. Her predecessor was the late Lake Erie Eddie.

Fri, 02/02/2024 - 7:50am

McDonald's just confirmed its fan-favorite Shamrock Shake and Oreo Shamrock McFlurry are returning to menus soon.

The beloved burger joint announced that the mint green drinks would once again become available for a limited time later this month.

On Friday, Feb. 2, a statement made via McDonald's Menu Spotter revealed that the long-awaited return of the frozen treats would come in just a few days, beginning on Monday, Feb. 5.

Mickey D's classic Shamrock Shake is made with creamy vanilla soft serve, blended with mint syrup and topped with a sweet, whipped topping. The companion McFlurry includes similar ingredients and an added bonus: blended with crushed Oreo cookies.

Along with the minty shakes, word on the street is McDonald's has already begun bringing back another sweet treat: a famed pie that many fans have missed for quite some time. At some locations, the classic apple pie has been joined by the limited addition of the Strawberry & Crème Pie, though the company has yet to confirm it.

If you thought the good food news ended there, you'd be wrong. Yesterday, McDonald's announced it would be giving customers a chance to win free hamburgers for an entire year, and no, you don't have to buy anything to qualify–but you do have to stop the Hamburglar before he completes his hamburger-stealing heist.

All it takes to win is to keep your eyes peeled for the Hamburglar's never-before-seen getaway car, the Burgercuda—a custom 1970 Plymouth Barracuda decked out with signature black and white stripes on the interior and exterior of the car, along with his logo on the headrests and red detailing throughout—on his cross-country burger heist road trip.

Golden Arches fans can also enter for a chance to win simply by visiting SpotHamburglar.com.

Who Does Brandon Pick on 'Farmer Wants a Wife' Season 2?

Fri, 02/02/2024 - 6:55am

Whoever Brandon Rogers picks on Farmer Wants a Wife Season 2 had better be okay with living four hours from an airport in a one-stoplight town with no restaurants in sight. The 29-year-old potato and barley farmer is from a place called Center, Colorado, where apparently everybody knows (and has dated) everyone else, hence Brandon's quest for a wife via national television.

So, who does he pick to join him in the middle of nowhere? Read on to see who's in the running and how they're each faring.

Who Does Brandon Rogers Pick on Farmer Wants a Wife Season 2?

We don't know who wins this farmer's heart just yet, but here are the five women who got an invite to his farm in Week 1.

Reba

Occupation: Bar Supervisor
Location: Spearfish, SD

Reba ("it's 'a beer' if you say it backwards") is the clear frontrunner at the moment. It helps that she's from a small town (albeit one with a bar for her to work at) and can relate to Brandon's frustrations with having to get a friend's permission to date an ex.

So far, Brandon seems to be impressing Reba with his openness to being a stepdad to her 5-year-old daughter, too. Let's just hope Center has schools.

Annellyse

Occupation: Professional Dancer
Location: Miami, FL

Annellyse was most recently a dancer for the Miami Dolphins, but does she know how to two-step? No! One of the cuter moments from the premiere was when Brandon taught her.

Michael Becker / FOX

Brooklyn

Occupation: Makeup Artist
Location: Washington, UT

Brooklyn's claim to fame? Her nails. When Brandon points out that they're way too long for "sorting potatoes," she vowed to "bite these suckers off real quick." She could just find a man who won't have her sorting potatoes in the first place, but hey, it's not easy to get a spot on The Bachelor

Grace

Occupation: Communications Associate
Location: Caledonia, WI

Grace just learned how to drive a tractor, and that's all we know about her so far. Riveting!

Michael Becker / FOX

Joy

Occupation: Radiologic Tech
Location: Jacksonville, FL

Joy is a great Middle Eastern cook. Let's just hope all of her recipes call for potatoes.

The Shockingly Simple Habit That Could Make a Huge Difference in Your Self-Esteem

Fri, 02/02/2024 - 5:25am

Self-esteem. Defined as a “deep sense of one’s own worth,” as Marybeth Cale, Well-Being Coach and Founder of Estuary Coaching, states, it seems like something that you should have only struggled with as a teen when you’re finding your way in the world and peer pressures abound.

But as it turns out, low self-esteem can easily follow someone into adulthood. In fact, Psychology Today reports that an astounding 85% of all people worldwide grapple with low self-esteem. This comes as no surprise, as comparisons are easy to make on social media and ongoing stress is rampant, which can make self-care low on a priority list.

If self-esteem is something that you’d like to improve in your life, read on for the one “it’s almost too easy” habit you can start to boost your confidence.

What Are Some Characteristics of Good Self-Esteem?

Cale says that when you have healthy self-esteem, you accept yourself fully and lovingly. You can confidently embrace new opportunities. You can actively listen to others for understanding, without trying to one-up them. You are typically motivated. And you exude a sense of security and peacefulness. These are all things you can aspire to as you increase your self-confidence.

Why Is It Important To Have Good Self-Esteem?

“A deep sense of self allows one to lean into new experiences and adventures without fear of rejection or failure,” Cale says. “You can really show up to life with total authenticity, make decisions with greater clarity, set boundaries when needed and design your life in a way that allows you to truly thrive.”

To Cale, good self-esteem is the cornerstone of success in relationships, the workplace, community and life, making it something that should be a priority for all of us.

The One Shockingly Simple Habit That Could Make a Huge Difference in Your Self-Esteem

Cale says that every person has an inner critic.

“To that, I say, squash that sucker as soon as they rear their ugly head!” Cale emphasizes. “The moment you feel yourself engaging in negative self-talk, you must take pause and say, ‘Is this thought helpful or harmful?’”

Cale adds that negative self-talk is usually harmful in the sense that when we don’t believe in ourselves, we aren’t able to share our talents and gifts, which all of us have, with others.

After you acknowledge the inner critic’s presence and whatever message it’s sending or the story it’s telling, Cale recommends taking a deep breath in, smiling as you exhale and replacing that negative thought/storyline with a positive one about yourself.

“This can become a habit when practiced over time, acknowledging when that inner critic is showing up and using your personal power to crush it so that it doesn’t impede your ability to experience life,” Cale says. “Over time, conditioning yourself to engage in positive self-talk will boost your self-esteem and empower you in all areas of your life.”

Other Habits That Can Help

In addition to this great, and effective, habit to cultivate, there are other ways to improve your self-esteem. Cale is partial to list-making, for example.

“I love list-making. It sounds so simple, but if I make a list of a few things I want to achieve each day, I feel euphoric as I cross those items off. It’s a wonderful way to feel productive and on your A-game, even if those tasks seem small. They add up to greater self-esteem,” Cale explains.

Another self-esteem hack you can consider, which Cale usually does after her morning meditation or during a run, is this: at the beginning of each day, come up with three things you did to brighten the lives of others the day before, and something you might do in the day ahead which can make a difference in the world.

“It can be something as simple as calling a friend in need, or it can be more involved like helping your teenager through a breakup by giving some sound advice,” Cale says. “Whatever the case may be, when we reflect on the many ways, large and small, we are sharing our hearts and minds with others, we feel better about ourselves.”

Next up, discover the 10 signs of low self-esteem, and what to do instead.
