Natalie Imbruglia is opening up about her intense financial struggles after first finding fame.

The Australian pop singer, 51, rose to stardom in her home country in the role of Beth Brennan in the popular soap opera Neighbours, but it wasn’t until she released her debut single “Torn” in 1997 that she went on to international fame. Featured on her debut studio album, Left of the Middle, the song, a cover of a 1995 song by the band Ednaswap, dominated the charts. But in a revealing new interview on the Aug. 13 episode of Begin Again with Davina McCall, Imbruglia admitted that after hitting it big on Neighbors, she was struggling tremendously as she tried to launch her music career. That meant major financial hardship.

“So I then went to England, and that’s when I couldn’t get a visa to work as an actress, and they were really cracking down on the Neighbours stars taking English actors’ roles, and that was a hard time because I ran out of money,” Imbruglia recalled. “I was, for a few years, very famous from Neighbours and was doing appearances and going appearing in clubs and signing autographs and just getting wads of cash in envelopes and living like that.”

Imbruglia continued, admitting that she had to be crafty when finding a place to stay.

“I was living in a basement at someone’s house in Chelsea, which was weird because I had no money and I’m in Chelsea, in this big mansion, but I’m just in the basement,” she shared, PEOPLE reported.

How Did Imbruglia Find Fame Again?

Realizing that “that was the first time in my life where everything didn’t fall in my lap,” Imbruglia found herself lost.

“So I just partied because I didn’t know what to do,” she continued. “The money ran out. And it was my dad once [who] rang and said, ‘Can I just ask, when are you going to get a job?’ And I was so proud. I screamed at him and kicked off, but I was so embarrassed that he said that to me that I changed things then.”

She focused on building her career more than ever, and eventually released “Torn.” The song catapulted her to music superstardom.

Chuk Anyanwu was eliminated from Big Brother 28 in Week 5. The Nigerian cowboy was riding high for the first month of the season, safely in a tight trio with Haley and Kamu Kirk, as well as the powerful “Toolshed” alliance. But things were blown apart over the course of one eviction, leaving Chuk, Haley, and Kamu all in the dark. With the trio now on the ropes, Kamu threw his other two allies under the bus, leading them to get thrown up rather than the MMA fighter. While blindsided by his nomination, it seemed Chuk would survive the week, considering how much bigger of a target was. But when Haley won the Block Buster, it sealed his fate. “Chuk Time,” evidently, has come to an end.

Jen Hamilton is sharing a new revelation about her separation from her husband, Brian Hamilton, after 15 years together.

The labor and delivery nurse and influencer previously accused her estranged husband of living a “double life with a woman who was 56 years old.”

In a profile published in The Cut on Thursday, Aug. 13, Jen alleged that Brian had cheated on her before and that they had separated for a few months before ultimately reconciling.

“He did all this stuff to make me feel like he had changed,” she said, claiming that she only learned about his recent affair after finding clues that led him to admit to it.

Jen also alleged that Brian’s affair partner called her and said, “I knew about you. He talked about you all the time. I just didn’t know you had so many followers.”

The influencer said the phone call “pissed her off” and ultimately led her to share her separation online rather than keep his secrets.

Jen first hinted at trouble in her marriage in a since-deleted TikTok shared in June.

“Day 1: absolutely devastated. Please don’t try to reach out to anybody on my behalf. That would make everything so much worse for me. Please just let me grieve,” she captioned a video of herself crying. “My heart is absolutely shattered.”

“He broke my heart but I still love him with all the pieces 💔,” she added.

Amid her separation, Jen has raised more than $160,000 through the Sisterhood of Solidarity Collection and direct donations to support nonprofits that help women escape abusive relationships and rebuild their lives.

One of daytime’s newest breakout actresses, Beyond the Gates star Colby Nixon, just revealed that she has an interesting connection to the world of soaps.

During a recent interview with PIX11 News, the breakout star was asked if she grew up watching soaps. “I didn’t grow up watching soap operas,” she shared. With that said, the actress added that she had a unique connection to the world of continuing drama, noting that she was named after the Colby family from the ABC primetime soap opera Dynasty. “So, I have a piece of soap opera in my heart.”

When Dynasty launched in 1981, it told the story of the Carrington family and their rivals, the Colbys. The family was so popular that in 1985 they were given their own spin-off series Dynasty II: The Colbys (later simply known as The Colbys) which lasted for two seasons before coming to a shocking close in 1987.

Nixon joined the cast of Beyond the Gates during its inaugural first season, and plays Kat Richardson, the daughter of Ted Richardson (Keith D. Robinson) and Nicole Richardson Dupree (Daphnée Duplaix).

During the first season, she quickly became a fan favorite. Her storylines thus far have involved the character investigating the schemes of Leslie “Dana” Thomas (Trisha Mann Grant) and her daughter, Kat’s half-sister, Eva Thomas (Ambyr Michelle). This culminated in recent weeks when Kat had to decide to have surgery and donate a piece of her liver to Eva to save her half-sister’s life.

Kat has been in a romantic relationship with lawyer Tomas Navero (Alex Alegria). Still, it’s her familiar relationship with her family, specifically her cousin Chelsea Hamilton (RhonniRose Mantilla), that fans have connected with most, as the two have launched a fashion accessory line, “ChelseaKat,” that has produced products fans can purchase.

Beyond the Gates is CBS’s newest daytime drama; it is the first hour-long soap opera to star a predominantly Black cast, have a predominantly Black crew, and the first new soap opera to be produced in over twenty years.

Emerald Fennell’s sophomore directorial effort, Saltburn, is full of iconic moments—and killer needle drops. One of the best comes at the end of the film, when star Barry Keoghan’s character, Oliver, turns a 14th-century mansion into his own personal clothing-optional dance club.

Shimmying around the grand estate’s bits and bobbles completely nude, Oliver relishes every beat of Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s “Murder on the Dancefloor.” The celebratory scene is so unforgettable that GQ named the victory sequence one of the greatest needle drops of all time.

“[Oliver is] stark bollock naked, his crown jewels flopping around with every skip, hop and strut,” GQ wrote. “It’s a chaotic coda that ends Saltburn on a devilish high note, and it helps that the Ellis-Bextor track is an unequivocal pop banger.”

Without giving too much of the plot away, Saltburn is a highly stylized and darkly comedic thriller from the brilliant mind of Fennell, a writer, director, and actress whose work ranges from The Crown to Killing Eve to the latest adaptation of Wuthering Heights. Centered on an oddball Oxford student named Oliver Quick who is welcomed into the lavish and glossy alternate universe of the Cattons, Saltburn simmers with obsession, manipulation, deceit, seduction, and, of course, murder.

Premiering in August 2023 at the Telluride Film Festival, Saltburn was a polarizing initial watch for critics, with some praising it as “deliriously enjoyable” and others chalking it up to superficial “eat the rich” satire with empty shock value. Even so, everyone could agree on the killer soundtrack.

The soundtrack, supervised by Kirsten Lane and scored by Anthony Willis, mixes nostalgic, mid-2000s indie sleaze and alternative rock tracks, including Bloc Party’s “This Modern Love,” MGMT’s “Time to Pretend,” and The Killers’ “Mr. Brightside.” Still, the song that seems to stay with moviegoers long after the credits roll is Ellis-Bextor’s “Murder on the Dancefloor.”

First written in 1994 by Gregg Alexander, the founder and frontman of alt-rock band New Radicals, “Murder on the Dancefloor” was born out of frustration. According to The Guardian, Alexander was on his way to a club in Detroit when his car wouldn’t start. Annoyed and stuck, he grabbed his acoustic guitar and came up with the famous chorus of the dance-pop song.

After New Radicals disbanded, Alexander moved to London, where he eventually connected with Ellis-Bextor. The two reworked the song, and Ellis-Bextor released it as the second single from her 2001 debut solo album, Read My Lips.

Though the song hardly made a dent in the U.S. zeitgeist, it peaked at No. 2 in the U.K. in early 2002. More than two decades after its original release, it finally debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 2024, entering at No. 98 before climbing to No. 51, all courtesy of Fennell’s steamy psychological thriller.

Ellis-Bextor’s disco-pop gem made for the perfect match for Saltburn’s triumphant, depraved final scene. Its chillingly upbeat rhythm and lyrics about fighting for dominance on the dance floor served as an eerily perfect counterpoint to Oliver’s gleeful psychopathy.

“It had to be a moment of utter jubilant triumph,” Fennell told Ireland‘s Entertainment.ie. “It had to be a moment that made us, the audience, completely complicit in all murder of terrible things. [It] had to have post-coital joy and also [a] little camp streak that I think this film also doesn’t shy away from. So, it could never be anything but ‘Murder on the Dancefloor.’ It’s too good to be true.”

Guy Fieri is wondering where the time went.

The Food Network star celebrated his son Hunter Fieri’s 30th birthday on Thursday, August 13, with an Instagram carousel showing snaps of his life through the years. The photos ranged from childhood throwbacks to more recent family moments, including snapshots with Hunter’s wife, Tara Bernstein.

“Happy 30th birthday to my best friend/son HUNTER,” Guy began his tribute, before expressing his own disbelief over the milestone. “WTH!! Where did 30 years go?! It’s been an amazing adventure with you Hunter. From your long delivery, to the first year of not sleeping well, to all of a sudden you turned into this amazing little kid that always sought adventure.”

He continued, “You are such a kind, respectful and genuine person… we couldn’t be more proud of you. You’ve done an amazing job getting to 30 and we look forward to what comes next.”

Hunter is the oldest son of Guy, 58, and his wife, Lori Fieri. The couple, who married in 1995, also share a 20-year-old son, Ryder.

Over the years, Hunter has become increasingly involved in his dad’s Food Network world, appearing alongside him on shows including Tournament of Champions VII and Flavortown Food Fight.

And for Guy, working alongside his son isn’t simply a case of keeping things in the family. “Hunter is, one, my best friend, and, two, my kid, and three, a really good, aware co-host,” Guy told PEOPLE in February. “He gets it. He knows television, he understands what we need, what we got to do.”

Guy also praised Hunter’s ability to bring his “whimsical, funny, creative side” to their work together.

The NFL has announced that the Jonas Brothers will headline the halftime show at the league’s first-ever regular-season game in Australia, adding a major music act to a historic football event.

Nick, Joe and Kevin Jonas will perform at the Melbourne Cricket Ground during the NFL Melbourne Game, where the Los Angeles Rams will face the San Francisco 49ers on Friday, Sept. 11. 

The game will be shown live on Netflix in the United States, while the full halftime performance will also air live in Australia on the Seven Network.

The NFL made the announcement on Wednesday through its social media channels.

The game is scheduled to begin at 10:35 A.M. on Sept. 11 in Australia, which is 8:35 P.M. on Sept. 10 in the United States.

The Jonas Brothers said they are excited to take part in the event and perform at one of Australia’s most famous sports venues.

The NFL Melbourne Game will mark the first time a regular-season NFL game has been played in Australia. The matchup between the Rams and 49ers will be part of the league’s 2026 international schedule.

NFL senior director of global game presentation and entertainment Tim Tubito said the event is an important moment for the league.

“Bringing the first-ever NFL regular season game to Australia is a landmark moment for the league, and we are committed to creating an entertainment experience that reflects the scale and significance of the occasion,” Tubito said.

He also explained why the Jonas Brothers were selected for the halftime show.

“The Jonas Brothers are global entertainers whose music connects across generations, making them the ideal artists to help us celebrate this historic game in Melbourne. We look forward to delivering a memorable halftime performance for our fans in Australia and those watching around the world.”

The brothers have already performed at NFL events in the United States. They previously appeared during the NFL Thanksgiving game in Dallas in 2022, when the Cowboys played the New York Giants. They also performed during the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft in Kansas City.

Their Melbourne performance will now give the group another connection to the league, this time on an international stage.

The Jonas Brothers, Nick, Joe and Kevin, have recently received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Their appearance also comes at a busy time for the group, which is currently connected to the return of the Camp Rock franchise.

The brothers are returning as Shane, Nate and Jason in Camp Rock 3. The movie premiered on the Disney Channel on Thursday and is set to arrive on Disney+ on Friday.

The group is also preparing to finish its Jonas20: Greetings From Your Hometown Tour with three shows at New York’s Madison Square Garden on Aug. 20, 21 and 22.

NFL Kickoff Festival Adds More Music and Events

The Jonas Brothers will not be the only musical act featured during the NFL’s Melbourne takeover.

The NFL Kickoff Festival will run at Melbourne Park from Sept. 10 through Sept. 12. The event will include live music, football activities, watch parties, retail pop-ups and an American-style food village.

Australian acts including Peking Duk, Kita Alexander, Grinspoon, Hot Dub Time Machine, Public Figures and Sneaky Sound System are part of the festival’s music program.

The festival will also feature the Vince Lombardi Trophy and all 60 Super Bowl rings.

Fans can also attend a watch party for the opening game of the 2026 NFL season, featuring the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots in a rematch of Super Bowl LX.

The NFL Melbourne Game is part of a wider international push by the league. During the 2026 season, NFL international games are scheduled for London, Madrid, Melbourne, Mexico City, Munich, Paris and Rio de Janeiro.

The cast of the original Jaws had no idea how big the movie was going to be; even Steven Spielberg, who directed it when he was 26, thought the mechanical shark looked “dumb.” But the 1975 beach thriller, made on a budget of roughly $12 million, would go on to gross more than $260.7 million in its initial domestic run (more than $1.5 billion when adjusted for inflation) and originate the idea of the “summer blockbuster.” 

“I thought it was going to be a disaster,” Richard Dreyfuss, who played marine biologist Matt Hooper, has said of the film. “Because I couldn’t imagine how Steven was going to overcome all of the problems that he faced every day. I know I went on at least one talk show where I said this is a total disaster. And then I went back on that same show and pronounced myself the stupidest actor in America.”

While many of the film’s biggest stars are no longer with us, a handful of original cast members are still alive. Here’s who remains from the cast of Jaws—and what they’re doing more than 50 years after the movie catapulted them to fame.

Who’s still alive from the Jaws cast?  Richard Dreyfuss (Matt Hooper) Richard Dreyfuss as Matt Hooper in Jaws.

Dreyfuss, now 78, is the most famous surviving member of the Jaws cast. Two years after he tried killing a blood-thirsty Great White with a poison-filled spear, he won the Academy Award for Best Actor for The Goodbye Girl. He went on to star in films including Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), What About Bob? (1991) and Mr. Holland’s Opus (1995). 

In 2025, Dreyfuss kicked up controversy for making derogatory comments about women and LGBTQ+ people at a post-screening Q&A for Jaws. Prior to that, he drew backlash for saying that inclusion initiatives implemented for the Oscars “make me vomit.” 

More recently, Dreyfuss canceled an appearance at a fan event for undisclosed reasons. “It truly breaks my heart that I won’t be able to attend the reunion at The Hollywood Show,” he wrote on Instagram in May 2026. 

“…My heart is absolutely with my fellow cast members who will be attending,” he added. “Sharing this journey with them has been one of the greatest blessings of my life, and I know they’ll make this celebration unforgettable.”

Lorraine Gary, now 88, played Ellen Brody, wife of Police Chief Martin Brody. After reprising the role in both Jaws 2 and Jaws: The Revenge, and appearing in a handful of movies like Car Wash and 1941, she stepped away from acting to focus on production and human rights activism. 

Carl Gottlieb (Ben Meadows)

Carl Gottlieb co-wrote the screenplay for Jaws with Peter Benchley, author of the novel it was based on, and nabbed himself the role of newspaper editor Ben Meadows.

Following the monster success of the picture, Gottlieb focused mostly on writing, including the Jaws sequels, the best-selling behind-the-scenes book The Jaws Log and the Steve Martin comedy The Jerk. He also tried his hand at directing, including 1981 prehistoric comedy Caveman starring Ringo Starr.

Jeffrey Kramer (Deputy Hendricks)

As Deputy Leonard Hendricks, Jeffrey Kramer played Chief Brody’s eager-to-please second-in-command. He reprised the role in Jaws 2 before building a successful second act as a television producer and executive. He won multiple Emmys along the way, including for The Practice and Ally McBeal. Much to the delight of fans, he still shows up at Jaws reunions.

Reflecting on the movie 50 years later, he said, “You know that the rumors were going all summer that they were going to cancel it. It was never going to get finished. The shark didn’t work.”

Jeffrey Voorhees (Alex Kintner)

Jeffrey Voorhees was just 12 years old when he played Alex Kinter, the kid who begged his mom for more time in the water only to get eaten by a shark. He didn’t go on to pursue a career in Hollywood, but he happily embraces his place in film history at fan conventions and anniversary events. “Once there was an 11-year-old girl with a raft, crying because she didn’t care about meeting Richard Dreyfuss, she wanted to meet me,” he recalled. “So she did, and I signed her raft, and she walked away with a big smile. That feels good.”

Fun fact: Voorhees’s family had just moved to Martha’s Vineyard, where Jaws was shot, when he was cast to play ill-fated Alex.

Jay Mello wasn’t even going out for the role of Sean Brody, Chief Brody’s young son, when he got cast—he was tagging along on his big brothers’ auditions. “I had a habit of copying people,” he told People. “So when Steven Spielberg was interviewing them, I was copying him as he gave direction. When the interview was over, he said ‘You boys can go, we’re done. But the youngest can stay.’”

Mello, who was 6 in the movie, didn’t continue acting after Jaws (as of 2025, he was working at a maple syrup company in Vermont). But like Voorhees, he honors this part of his life story. “My kids and my grandkids and I all gather around the television around Christmastime and watch it,” he said. “Every year, I pick out something different to tell them. And I let them keep their eyes wide open.”

After Jaws and its sequel, Roy Scheider scored his second Oscar nomination for All That Jazz (he’d previously been nominated for the 1971 movie The French Connection), returned to the stage, where he first started his career, and appeared in movies like Still of the Night and Naked Lunch. He died of a staph infection at 75 following a years-long battle with multiple myeloma. 

Robert Shaw (Quint): died in 1978  Robert Shaw as Quint, the great white shark hunter, in Jaws.

Just three years after the success of Jaws, Robert Shaw died of a heart attack on the side of the road in Ireland. He was 51.

Martin Hamilton’s post-Jaws credits include The Amityville Horror, 1941 and guest appearances on TV shows like The Golden Girls. He died from lung cancer when he was 63.

Lee Fierro (Mrs. Kintner): died in 2020

Lee Fierro briefly reprised her role of the late Alex’s mother in Jaws: The Revenge (1987), but the bulk of her career was devoted to community theater on Martha’s Vineyard, where she spent more than four decades as the artistic director of the Island Theatre Workshop. She died from complications of COVID-19 in April 2020, while residing at an Ohio-based assisted living facility, at the age of 91. 

Susan Backlinie (Chrissie Watkins): died in 2024 Susan Backlinie as a woman being attacked by a shark in Jaws.

Susan Backlinie was a stunt woman with a speciality in swimming when Spielberg cast her to play the first shark attack victim in Jaws. (He needed someone who could handle the intensity of the scene, which called for getting jerked back and forth and dragged under water.) Her other credits include Spielberg’s 1941 and The Great Muppet Caper. After she retired from acting, she worked as a computer accountant in Ventura, Calif. She died of a heart attack at 77.

Real World Key West and The Challenge star Tyler Duckworth has died, according to a Facebook post shared by his mom, Joni.

“My son, Tyler, passed away earlier this week,” she wrote. “Cause of death has yet to be determined. I will post on Facebook about services as soon as his dad and I figure it out.”

Duckworth, 44, had remained active on social media prior to his death. His final Instagram post came on Aug. 2, when he shared photos from The Challenge Mania event in Minneapolis on July 31, posing with fellow The Challenge alums Rachel Robinson, Brad Fiorenza, Tina Barta, and Mark Long.

“Rest in peace Tyler,” another comment read.

“I’m so happy I got to finally meet you. But so heartbroken that you’re gone. RIP Tyler,” a fourth Instagram user added.

More than a decade after Steven D’Achille lost his wife, Alexis, to postpartum psychosis, he’s watching another family endure an unimaginable tragedy.

As the trial of Lindsay Clancy continues in Massachusetts, D’Achille says he can’t help but see painful similarities to his own story.

Clancy is facing first-degree murder charges in the deaths of her three children—Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months—who were killed inside the family’s Duxbury, Massachusetts, home in January 2023. Her mental state at the time of the killings has become a central issue in the case.

For D’Achille, following the trial has been painful in part because of what his own family endured. After the birth of their first child, daughter Adriana, in 2013, D’Achille says Alexis developed postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis. As he desperately tried to find her the care she needed, her condition worsened. Alexis died by suicide when Adriana was just 6 weeks old.

In a recent Facebook post, D’Achille admitted he’d been hesitant to follow the Clancy proceedings because hearing details of the case brings him back to that time.

“Just bits and pieces because the PTSD of hearing parts sends chills down my spine and lights a fire full of rage in me,” he wrote.

But while much of the public conversation has focused on Clancy herself, D’Achille believes there’s a bigger question people should be asking.

“How Did We Get Here?”

“I wish there was more compassion,” D’Achille tells Parade. “Instead of just saying, ‘Here’s this monster, here’s what happened,’ I wish they would lead with, ‘How did we get here?’ Sometimes you have to point the finger at the healthcare system.”

I first spoke with D’Achille in 2019, six years after Alexis died by suicide while experiencing postpartum psychosis, just six weeks after the birth of their daughter. Since then, he has devoted his life to maternal mental health advocacy, helping establish the Alexis Joy D’Achille Center for Perinatal Mental Health in Pittsburgh and working with families across the country seeking treatment and support.

Seven years later, his message has only grown stronger.

“I still believe postpartum mental health isn’t a women’s health issue,” he says. “It’s a family health issue.”

‘It Was Too Late to Do Research’

During his testimony in late July, Patrick Clancy described trying to navigate Lindsay’s increasingly complex mental health treatment before the deaths of their children. He testified that after Lindsay spent five days at McLean Hospital, the couple left with medication recommendations but without the kind of roadmap he believed they needed for what came next. Patrick recalled being told to research providers himself—an experience that resonated with D’Achille.

“It was too late to do research,” D’Achille says.

D’Achille remembers being similarly overwhelmed while trying to find help for Alexis in 2013.

“I was Googling. I had the Yellow Pages—the phone book—open,” he recalls. “I was desperate to just get ahold of any kind of psychologist, psychiatrist. At that time, I didn’t even know the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist.”

That’s why D’Achille sees a contradiction in telling fathers they must advocate for their partners while giving them few tools to understand an extraordinarily complicated illness.

“We’re dads. We’re not healthcare professionals,” he says. “They’re asking dads to research and do homework [on] one of the most complex health issues there is. We’re supposed to figure it out, which feels impossible.”

‘How Can You Advocate If You Don’t Know What to Ask?’

Back when we first spoke in 2019, D’Achille urged husbands to become their wives’ biggest advocates. Today, he says that advice still stands—but with one important caveat.

“How can you advocate for somebody when you don’t even know what to ask?” he says.

Instead of waiting until after a baby is born, he believes fathers should be involved throughout pregnancy—attending appointments, learning warning signs and building relationships with healthcare providers long before a crisis develops.

“I still believe women become mothers the day they find out they’re pregnant,” he says. “Fathers become fathers when they bring their child home from the hospital. Those 40 weeks are a missed opportunity.”

Patrick Clancy Reached Out After the Tragedy

D’Achille also revealed something he has rarely discussed publicly: Patrick Clancy contacted him shortly after the deaths of the Clancy children.

“We’ve talked for years,” D’Achille says. “He reached out to me very soon after everything happened. He found my story online and said, ‘I want to create change.'”

Rather than judging Patrick or his wife, D’Achille says his heart breaks for the family. “I know Patrick’s wife was a good person,” he says. “She was just sick.”

He says that’s why he hopes the trial leads to meaningful changes in maternal mental healthcare instead of simply fueling public outrage.

“I would be putting the whole country on notice,” he says. “The healthcare system let them down.”

‘The Care She Deserved Did Not Exist’

Although conversations surrounding the trial often center on criminal responsibility, D’Achille believes they’re overlooking a larger systemic failure.

“The simple reality is we ended up in this situation because my wife got sick and the care she deserved did not exist,” he says.

He believes the same questions should be asked today.

“If these facilities existed everywhere,” he says, referring to specialized perinatal mental health centers like the one named after Alexis in Pittsburgh, “I’d like to think they’d [the Clancys] still be a happy family today.”

For D’Achille, that’s the legacy he hopes both Alexis’ story and the Clancy case leave behind—not one of blame, but of change. “I know our facility works,” he says. “Almost every day someone comes up to me and tells me it saved their wife’s life, their daughter’s life or their own life.”

“That’s what I want people talking about.”

It sounds like something out of a Will Ferrell movie: A Dutchman gets hold of a bootleg Beatles record, then decides to make a legitimate version with sound-alike singers; the track unexpectedly hits No. 1 in the U.S. and launches a medley music craze. But in reality, this actually happened.

The iconic 1981 chart-topping “Medley” by Stars on 45 was the brainchild of Willem van Kooten, head of the Dutch publishing company Red Bullet Productions, and Jacobus Johannes “Jaap” Eggermont, a Dutch music producer who, years before, was the drummer for The Golden Earrings (changed to Golden Earring in 1969), the Dutch rock band that would eventually bless America with “Radar Love.”

According to History, the story revolves around a 12-inch record called Let’s Do It in the ’80s Great Hits. Created by Montreal deejays and circulating as a bootleg, the record, which featured a mashup of contemporary and older songs, including recordings by The Beatles, Archies, Buggles, and Madness, eventually made its way into Dutch dance clubs, where it caught the attention of Kooten.

Wanting to capitalize on the hit record, Kooten appointed Eggermont as music director/hiring producer. Eggermont then recruited a team of Dutch studio session musicians and singers capable of convincingly imitating the Beatles. Teaming with Bas Muys, who mimicked John Lennon; Okkie Huysdens, who took on Paul McCartney; and Hans Vermeulen, who mastered George Harrison, they recorded all the songs separately, with Eggermont stitching the tracks together afterward.

Overall, the medley, released via Radio Records, uses snippets of Shocking Blue’s “Venus,” The Archies’ “Sugar Sugar,” and a string of Beatles tunes including “No Reply,” “Drive My Car,” and “We Can Work It Out,” all strung together in a seamless studio construction.

Tagged with the famously long title that was the result of copyrights and artists’ demands, the song was officially called [takes deep breath here] “Medley: Intro Venus/Sugar Sugar/No Reply/I’ll Be Back/Drive My Car/Do You Want to Know a Secret/We Can Work It Out/I Should Have Known Better/Nowhere Man/You’re Going to Lose That Girl/Stars on 45.”

For a brief time in the summer of 1981, fans were not only listening once again to the sounds of the Beatles but they were also jamming out to Dutch musicians pretending to be the Fab Four over a relentlessly catchy disco beat. American music listeners couldn’t get enough of Eggermont’s creation, the work of a band that wasn’t really a band as much as it was a studio illusion with Eggermont behind the smoke.

The song hit No. 1 in June, dislodging Kim Carnes’ “Bette Davis Eyes” from the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100, bobbing around the tally for a total of 21 weeks. Now known simply as the Stars on 45 “Medley,” the track spawned a music medley craze with its own sequel, “Medley II,” and several inspired mixes featuring Motown greats, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, and even ABBA.

“This was originally a 16-minute medley intended for release only as a 12-inch single,” Songfacts reported. “When radio stations started to play their own edited versions, Radio Records took the first three and a half minutes of the Beatles medley, added the ‘Venus‘ intro and the first verse of ‘Sugar Sugar,’ and released the 7-inch single that started a medley craze.”

The last four minutes of the original Stars on 45 “Medley” were later released as “Medley II.” The mashup containing sunny snippets of “Good Day Sunshine, “My Sweet Lord,” “Here Comes the Sun,” and more ended up peaking at No. 67.

As crazes do, the medley fixation faded, but during that time in the early ’80s, the music industry learned that it didn’t need new music to create a No. 1 smash. It just needed some really good oldies, a slapping beat, and an editing wizard ready to work their magic.

In fact, that research showed that of almost 17,500 girls in 5th to 12th grades, the percentage of confidence rates dropped from 68 percent to 55 percent.

Even with that information, surely, there must still be a way to ensure your kids grow up with just the right amount of confidence, right? If it sounds like a daunting task to you, it can actually be simple to incorporate small, daily habits into their lives to build that up.

Child psychologist Dr. Jacqueline Shiels says that, sometimes, the best thing you can do as a parent is to narrow your focus in on smaller improvements throughout time, instead of racing to the finish line.

“The most helpful reminder for parents is focus on the journey, not the destination,” she tells Parade. “Let’s build confidence, not perfectionism.”

Ahead, she shares seven daily habits that build confidence in children and are vital to teach kids, along with advice on how to incorporate them.

Why Daily Micro-Habits Build Stronger Confidence Than Big Speeches

It’s no surprise that throwing a bunch of expectations at kids can be a lot. That’s why micro-habits are a lot more effective at helping kids feel confident. According to Dr. Shiels, it allows us to give kids “a sense of mastery earlier on.”

She also compares it to parents, saying that it’s easy for even adults to be overstimulated when we expect way too much of ourselves. In any case—parent or child—we don’t want anyone to shut down.

For kids, you’ll want to introduce habits that are digestible and don’t overwhelm them. This will feel manageable to them, rather than being talked at or constantly lectured.

“Think about us adults, when we are overwhelmed we freeze. If you want to exercise five days a week and you never exercise, that goal is unlikely to be achieved,” she explains. “So micro-habits allow for mini celebrations, which tells the brain, ‘You did it!’ and ‘You can do it again.’ Gets that dopamine juicing.”

For some kids, it can be a lot more meaningful if those small wins are acknowledged, a term referred to in psychology as “extrinsic validation.” That means they can feel a sense of encouragement if praised or recognized. That can look like positive reinforcement from the adult, no matter how big or small the micro-habit performed is.

Dr. Shiels says over time, this will help develop intrinsic self-efficacy, which is the inner drive to complete an expectation without the reward.

“Kids need external motivators to develop intrinsic motivation,” she says. “A 5-year-old is [typically] not going to be motivated to clean their room…”

She suggests offering something in return to the child, for them to eventually be motivated to continue with these micro-habits.

7 Daily Habits a Child Psychologist Recommends To Build Confident Kids

Here are a few ways you can implement healthy daily habits to ensure higher confidence in your kids, according to Dr. Shiels.

1. Give them agency

Before stepping in, it’s important to step back. According to Dr. Shiels, allowing your kids the space to solve their own problems will let them take control of their own outcomes.

“Think about yourself,” she suggests. “When we struggle a little, we are able to problem-solve a lot better. We also know what skills we already have and where we need help. And it helps us know when to ask for help.”

2. Name it to tame it

“Recognizing emotions without avoiding them” is one of the most helpful habits you can bring forth to your child’s life, says Dr. Shiels.

In particular, she reveals that getting kids to “identify and acknowledge” their feelings can be more effective than dismissing or shoving the feeling under the rug.

“For example, saying that you’re disappointed instead of immediately trying to make the feeling go away,” she explains. “If the kiddo is really young, they might tantrum. Parents, stay calm and regulated. They will move through it.”

3. Offer choices

This is a big one. According to Dr. Shiels, allowing children the option of choosing for themselves can make them feel assured with themselves.

“Simple choices help them build a sense of control,” she states.

4. Praise with more specificity

Praising your kids is never a bad idea. But the way in which you praise them matters too. Focus on what is “in their control versus out of their control,” says Dr. Shiels.

“Instead of praising results, praise effort and persistence,” she adds.

She suggests avoiding general phrasing and praising in a way that points out something more precise, sharing, “Avoid saying, ‘Good job’ and say, ‘Well done doing first time listening!'”

5. Encourage regulation

In both your child and yourself, making sure you regulate your emotions can help kids learn that mistakes happen—but they don’t have to ruin your day.

“When things go wrong, because they will, kids will understand that mistakes or frustrations are manageable, not avoidable,” says Dr. Shiels.

6. Don’t solve their problems

Let kids come to their own conclusions sometimes, says Dr. Shiels.

“Stop answering questions they know the answer to,” she shares. “Perhaps you ask they retrace their steps for where their shoes are.”

7. Show that you can learn from mistakes

Dr. Shiels says that kids should be taught to “express mistakes out loud.”

This micro-habit allows them to be resilient, but also allows you to turn mistakes into big teaching moments. This then helps them be confident whenever there’s another setback.

“For me, if I forget something, I tell my kids what my plan is to avoid that happening again,” she explains.

The Common Parenting Pitfalls That Silently Destroy a Child’s Confidence

Although some pitfalls from parents can harm a child’s confidence, Dr. Shiels stresses that there’s enough shame around the topic, and it’s important to be mindful when approaching this.

Her best advice is to always acknowledge new abilities or strengths that your child has displayed, and showcase that you see the energy they put into tasks.

“Recognize the child’s efforts in trying to develop a new skill,” she shares.

Another example she gives—that she herself is guilty of—is trying to calm your nervous system by ensuring a completely tidy home.

Praise your child for the effort, instead of “seeing a messy room and noticing all the bits that are still untidy,” Dr. Shiels says.

She also suggests something like: “I really like how you organized all your stuffies; although this area still needs work, you are working so hard.”

What is the most effective way to build self-esteem in a child?

Focusing on the result of tasks is the most crucial part of your child’s confidence journey, says Dr. Shiels. In fact, it’s helpful not to let your own standards or demands overshadow how you encourage outcomes.

To do this, highlight their efforts instead of what comes out of the task, she advises.

“Develop competence through praising effort, not result[s]. Give your child tasks to complete and don’t allow your own expectations to [dictate] how you judge their result,” she says. “Praise specific behaviors. Praising effort, persistence, problem-solving, kindness and courage helps the child feel seen, which honestly is priceless. Self-esteem and confidence grow when a child doesn’t feel fear for making mistakes.”

What should parents avoid doing when trying to build a child’s confidence? 

It can be a challenge, but Dr. Shiels says to not dive into aiding your child immediately when they try new things.

“Try to avoid jumping in to help too quickly,” she states. “[Their] brains have never done this before. Imagine if we were asked to write a paragraph with our non-dominant hand and then the observer criticized our result afterward.”

She also says to prevent yourself from “criticizing a child’s character flaw.”

“Focus on the task. It helps them not internalize their faults and areas of growth,” she shares.

How do you teach a child to handle failure without losing self-esteem? 

The easiest way to have children accept failure without feeling bad about themselves is to make it a normal part of life, says Dr. Shiels.

It’s best to explain that failures are a big part of existing, while also validating how they feel. Then, help them move through the challenge.

“Stay with the moment, help them understand that they can manage the difficulty,” she explains. “Another helpful skill is separating the child from the mistake. In therapy, we often separate the issue from the person. For example, with anxiety, we often say, ‘Your anxiety wants to help protect you and you know what you need to do anyway.'”

What are age-appropriate habits for raising independent kids?

For little ones, independence can start somewhere as simple as in the kitchen, in their bedrooms or putting on their own clothes, advises Dr. Shiels.

“That means encouraging [that] they learn how to clean up, first-time listening, choosing outfits and helping with laundry,” she says. “For elementary ages, packing and unpacking backpacks, prepping for sports, water bottles, cleaning up after themselves, bringing dishes to the kitchen and starting to understand conflict resolution without overly helping.”

For slightly older kids, tasks that encourage independence can be rooted in slightly more mature duties.

“For middle school/high school ages, starting to manage their schedule, learning a budget, prepping for dinner and making meals that are safe,” she explains.

It’s been 16 years since a group of campers first rocked Disney Channel. Camp Rock premiered in 2008, launching Demi Lovato‘s career and bringing the Jonas Brothers to the screens of fans. Joe began dating his Camp Rock co-star Lovato in 2010, though the pair broke up after a few months. He went through another split five years after the movie’s release, when the Jonas Brothers broke up.

Weeks after canceling their tour due to a “deep rift within the band,” the brothers told PEOPLE in 2013 that they had decided to call it quits. “It was a unanimous decision,” Joe told the outlet.

The singer went on to form the band DNCE in 2015 with JinJoo Lee, Jack Lawless and Cole Whittle. The group released their hit song “Cake by the Ocean” that year.

Joe reunited with his brothers in 2019, dropping their comeback single “Sucker.” It was followed by their fifth studio album Happiness Begins and the documentary Chasing Happiness. In the Amazon Original documentary, Joe recalled Nick’s decision to end the band, admitting: “I felt betrayed. I felt lied to. I felt angry. Numb.” 

“I was 25, 26, this was all I’d known. This is what I loved more than anything. I loved doing this. And somebody that you loved and cared about so much could take it away from you so quickly. That was heartbreaking,” Joe shared (via Entertainment Tonight). “What hurt the most is that it came from Nick because he is my best friend and I thought that me, Kevin and Nick were going to do this forever. It was us against the world… For a while it was dark.”

Since reuniting, the brothers have also released The Album in 2023 and Greetings From Your Hometown in 2025. They embarked on their JONAS20: Greetings From Your Hometown tour in 2025 and are bringing their The Burning Up Tour back for two nights in August 2026.

Outside of music, Joe served as a coach on the seventh season of The Voice Australia in 2018. In 2026, it was announced that he will be joining NBC’s The Voice: Celebrity, which is set to premiere in 2027. Prior to returning to his role as Shane Gray in Camp Rock 3, Joe appeared in another Disney project. He, Nick and Kevin starred in the 2025 Disney+ holiday film A Very Jonas Christmas Movie.

Joe is now a girl dad times two. He and his ex-wife Sophie Turner, whom he wed in 2019, welcomed their first daughter, Willa, in 2020 and their second, Delphine, in 2022. The former couple announced their split in September 2023.

“After four wonderful years of marriage we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage,” they said in a joint statement. “There are many speculative narratives as to why but, truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children.”

Joe and Turner finalized their divorce in 2024.

Nick Jonas was behind the Jonas Brothers’ breakup in 2013. “It was a very tough conversation and it left the family kind of shaken up for a little while,” he shared during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live in 2016.

After the band split up, Nick launched his solo career in 2014 with a self-titled album, which featured the songs “Jealous” and “Chains.” In 2016, he released the album Last Year Was Complicated and Spaceman in 2021.

While the band was broken up, Nick expanded his acting resume, starring in 2017’s  Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle alongside Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black and Kevin Hart. He returned for the film’s sequel, Jumanji: The Next Level, in 2019. Nick also appeared in all three seasons of Kingdom and in episodes of Scream Queens.

The singer joined The Voice as a coach in Season 18 and was back in the coach’s chair again in Season 20.

Nick has owned up to being the reason the Jonas Brothers split. During an appearance on Carpool Karaoke in 2019, Nick told James Corden, “I broke the band up, but I got them back together as well.”

Unlike his younger brothers, Kevin did not pursue music after the Jonas Brothers split in 2013. The eldest JoBro founded Jonas Werner, a real estate development company, and launched the food search app Yood in 2014.

Explaining how he got interested in tech, Kevin told Vox in 2015, “It was always my passion, even when me and my brothers were making music. We had an app that was really underutilized and I took it over. We did livestreams into the app prior to Meerkat and Periscope. The band didn’t work out, which is fine. I was able to double down in tech.”

Kevin married his wife Danielle Deleasa in 2009. It was after the band split that he and Danielle became parents, welcoming daughter Alena Jonas in 2014 and their second, Valentina Jonas, in 2016.

The Jonas sisters attended their first Jonas Brothers after their dad and uncles reunited in 2019. “They didn’t see us play or even know kind of that part of my life until they were actually more a little older into everything, which was really, really cool,” Kevin told Teddy Swims in 2026. “So then they came to the 2019 like obviously when Happiness Begins happened and the reunion of everything they came to that tour for the first time and saw us perform and I think that was like the most emotional I’ve ever been. Just like feeling them in the room. 1. I never thought it was going to happen again. And then 2. like that’s, you know, that’s them there.”

Following Camp Rock, Lovato went on to star in her own Disney Channel show, Sonny with a Chance, which ran from 2009 until 2011. She and Selena Gomez also shared the screen in the 2009 Disney Channel Original Movie Princess Protection Program.

Lovato’s vocals were showcased onscreen again in Netflix’s 2020 movie Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, playing Icelandic pop singer Katiana Lindsdóttir.

The singer-actress released her debut album Don’t Forget months after the release of Camp Rock, and opened up for her co-stars, the Jonas brothers, on their Burnin’ Up Tour in 2008. Lovato has since released an additional eight albums: Here We Go Again (2009), Unbroken (2011), Demi (2013), Confident (2015), Tell Me You Love Me (2017), Dancing with the Devil… the Art of Starting Over (2021), Holy Fvck (2022) and It’s Not That Deep (2025). Her album Confident was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album at the 2016 Grammys, which marked Lovato’s first career Grammy nomination.

The singer went to rehab in 2010 for “emotional and physical issues.” Her rep told PEOPLE at the time: “Demi has decided to take personal responsibility for her actions and seek help.”

Lovato was hospitalized in 2018 following following a near-fatal overdose. “I actually don’t think people realize how bad it actually was. I had three strokes. I had a heart attack. I suffered brain damage from the strokes. I can’t drive anymore and I have blind spots in my vision,” Lovato later shared in her YouTube Originals docuseries Dancing With the Devil. She also revealed that she had pneumonia and multiple organ failure.

The performer acknowledged in the series that she’s “really lucky to be alive.” Lovato recalled, “My doctors said that I had five to 10 more minutes and had my assistant not come in, I wouldn’t be here today.”

Lovato got engaged to musician Jordan Lutes in 2023, and the two tied the knot on May 25, 2025.

In 2020, the Disney Channel alum confirmed to Harper’s Bazaar that she was no longer in contact with the Jonas Brothers. That changed five years later when Joe reached out in 2025 to see if she’d be interested in performing with them on the first night of their JONAS20: Greetings from Your Hometown Tour.

Lovato spoke about the reunion on the Chicks in the Office podcast, saying that it “healed” her. “We’ve been through so much together—all of us—the Jonas Brothers and I,” she said. “And it was really, really great to spend time with them.”

Less than a year after sharing the stage together, Lovato joined the boy band as an executive producer of Camp Rock 3. Speaking to PEOPLE ahead of the movie’s 2026 premiere, she said, “It was so healing and so nostalgic for me to be a part of this film, and I’m so happy.”

Alyson Stoner, who was known on the Disney Channel for co-hosting Mike’s Super Short Show, played Mitchie’s friend Caitlyn Geller in Camp Rock. The Cheaper by the Dozen star reprised their role for the film’s 2010 sequel.

Stoner came out as gay in 2018, and wrote about embracing their sexuality in a piece for Teen Vogue. In it, the actor wrote that they were warned by some in the industry that they’d ruin their “career, miss out on possible jobs, and potentially put” their life in danger if they ever came out.

Stoner also declared, “I, Alyson, am attracted to men, women, and people who identify in other ways. I can love people of every gender identity and expression. It is the soul that captivates me. It is the love we can build and the goodness we can contribute to the world by supporting each other’s best journeys.”

Stoner co-founded the digital wellness platform Movement Genius in 2020 with their sibling, Correy O’Neal, and hosts the Dear Hollywood podcast, which premiered in 2023. In 2025, the Camp Rock alum released their memoir, Semi-Well-Adjusted Despite Literally Everything.

“I see this book as an opportunity to dismantle and deconstruct lots of myths — and even my own persona — so that I can more freely design my path moving forward,” Stoner told PEOPLE. “If that means fading into obscurity, but participating as a local community member, that sounds absolutely fantastic to me.”

“I’m starting a new chapter and it’s truly blank,” they continued. “That’s super liberating. I wasn’t aware that [by writing this book], I would be freeing myself through the process.”

After portraying the “too cool” antagonist Tess Tyler in Camp Rock, Meaghan Martin played Bianca Stratford in the 10 Things I Hate About You TV series. Mean Girls 2, Camp Rock 2 and episodes of Awkward are also among Martin’s acting credits.

The actress shared in 2022 that she had a “really difficult time filming Camp Rock 2,” explaining that not only was her character Tess “butchered after giving her such a lovely character arc in the first movie,” but she “also had mononucleosis.”

Martin recalled being 17, “working mostly outdoor night shoots, during a very cold Canadian autumn (like ❄️ cold), and I was so so sick and being berated, bullied and manipulated by men at least 2x my age.”

Despite the experience, Martin noted, “I am incredibly thankful for the successes and frustrations that I’ve had in my career, and ultimately I wouldn’t change anything other than standing up for myself more. I recognize how much privilege I’ve had and it’s part of why I haven’t spoken out more about the uglier parts, but we are at a crucial point in history where we can acknowledge that not everything is as shiny as it seems, perhaps especially when it comes to the entertainment industry.”

The actress married Bridgerton actor Oli Higginson in 2016. Martin celebrated six years “of marriage and British citizenship” in 2022.

Jasmine Richards, who played Peggy Dupree in the first Camp Rock movie and its sequel, has separated herself from the entertainment industry. Responding to a TikTok trend in 2025, the former actress wrote on her Instagram Story: “Having lived a very public life and my efforts to separate myself from the toxic environment that is the entertainment industry and the expectations people feel they are owed, when I say I am a PERSON, not a product – HEAR ME.”

Richards went on to express gratitude to everyone who supports her and her “past career,” and stated that she was “not interested in riding the coat tails” of her previous successes.

The Camp Rock actress has been married to her husband Michael Caci since September 2018. The pair share a son named Luke Agostino Caci, who was born on September 26, 2020.

Beyond Disney, Perez de Tagle starred as Joy Moy in the 2009 film Fame and joined, in 2011, the cast of the revival of Godspell

In an interview published in May 2026, Pere de Tagle shared with Vogue Philippines that she still works “with Disney on content creation.”

She married her husband Scott Kline Jr. in 2019. According to The Filipino Times, they were set up by the actress’ cousin and their first date took place at Disneyland. The couple welcomed their daughter Amelia Grace Kline in June 2021. She gushed in 2023 that being a mother was her “best role yet.”

Tyler Duckworth, a two-time champion of MTV’s The Challenge who originally appeared on The Real World: Key West, has died. He was 44.

Duckworth’s mother Joni Duckworth confirmed his death in a Facebook post, writing, “My son, Tyler, passed away earlier this week. Cause of death has yet to be determined. I will post on Facebook about services as soon as his dad and I figure it out.”

The U.S. Sun reports that Duckworth died Tuesday, Aug. 11, shortly before noon after he was found unresponsive in a bathroom in North Dakota. Local officials classified the case as an unattended death, meaning there were no witnesses present. A cause of death has not been determined.

Tyler Duckworth Was a Two-Time ‘Challenge’ Champion

Duckworth entered the MTV universe as a cast member on 2006’s The Real World: Key West, alongside future Challenge powerhouse Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio.

He made his Challenge debut that same year on The Duel and went on to compete on The Gauntlet III before putting together an impressive back-to-back championship run.

Duckworth won The Challenge: Cutthroat in 2010 and returned the following year for Rivals, where he and Bananas won the season together.

Those would be Duckworth’s final regular seasons of The Challenge for more than a decade.

When he finally returned for The Challenge: All Stars 2 in 2021, Duckworth told Entertainment Weekly that he had been surprised to receive the call.

“I thought they had maybe lost my number,” he joked.

Duckworth admitted that being passed over for subsequent seasons after winning twice in a row had been difficult. He said it “kind of broke my heart” to watch the show because he felt he still had more to give as a competitor.

“I could have won how many more?” he told EW, later confidently predicting that he “probably would have won a couple more, easily.”

His record certainly gave him reason for confidence. Before returning for All Stars, Duckworth had won two of the four seasons on which he competed, never lost a final and had elimination victories against some of the franchise’s most formidable competitors.

Duckworth ultimately competed on both All Stars 2 and All Stars 3.

He jokingly dubbed the group “the lost season of The Real World: Minneapolis” before thanking the city and fans.

Outside of reality television, Duckworth built a career in education. He told EW in 2021 that he was a full-time teacher and was pursuing his doctorate at the time.

When discussing his long-awaited return to The Challenge, Duckworth said winning was no longer the only measure of success for him.

“I just want to compete,” he said. “I want to see if I still have it.”
