Patrick Muldoon’s Sudden Death at 57 Now Has an Answer

Fri, 05/01/2026 - 7:08am

For a generation of television viewers, certain faces never fade. They remain tied to a time when storylines felt huge and characters became part of daily life. The sudden loss of one of those familiar faces is always difficult, especially when the details arrive days later.

New information has now confirmed how Patrick Muldoon died at age 57, following the shock of his sudden passing earlier this month. The actor, widely recognized for his roles on Days of Our Lives and Melrose Place, died on April 19 after collapsing at his home.

According to official records, Muldoon’s cause of death was a myocardial infarction, the medical term for a heart attack. Additional contributing factors included a pulmonary embolism and a hereditary blood clotting disorder.

The confirmation brings some clarity to a moment that felt abrupt for fans and colleagues alike. In the days immediately following his death, tributes poured in across social media, many reflecting not just on his work, but on the feeling of growing up with him on screen. Muldoon first rose to prominence in the early 1990s as Austin Reed on Days of Our Lives, a role that helped define one of the show’s most memorable eras.

He later transitioned into primetime television with Melrose Place, cementing his place in a decade of television that continues to resonate with audiences today. His presence extended beyond those roles, including appearances in projects like Starship Troopers, but it was his work in serialized TV that made him a recognizable and consistent figure in millions of homes.

What made the news particularly jarring was its timing. Muldoon had remained active professionally, with upcoming projects still in development, and had recently shared enthusiasm about future work. The sudden nature of his death, followed by the delayed release of details, left a gap that many fans were still trying to process.

In the days since, fellow actors and longtime collaborators have described him as warm, energetic, and deeply connected to the people around him. Those tributes have underscored the sense that Muldoon belonged to a specific era of television that continues to live on through reruns, streaming, and memory.

The confirmation of his cause of death closes one chapter of the story, but the response to his passing reflects something more enduring. For viewers who remember the height of ’90s television, Muldoon remains part of a shared cultural moment that still feels close, even decades later.

Netflix Is Dropping 5 New Movies in May, But This Gem Is Our #1 Pick

Fri, 05/01/2026 - 7:00am

Netflix, along with all of the other major streaming services, tends to rotate and shake up its movie offerings every month, and May is no exception. We looked into the films the massive streamer is adding this month and found five standout flicks for cinephiles.

Funnily enough, each one of these Netflix additions comes from the ‘90s, arguably one of the best decades in movie history. And while four of the films, including the Julia Roberts rom-com classic Pretty Woman, were well-received upon release, one of them was a titanic (no pun intended) financial flop. But we still think it’s well worth a watch!

If you’re ready to stream some great films, especially if you love ‘90s nostalgia, here are the best movies to watch on Netflix this May.

4. Pretty Woman (1990)
  • Coming to Netflix: May 1, 2026

It's hard to find a more iconic romantic comedy than Pretty Woman. Julia Roberts, whose face belongs on the Mount Rushmore of the genre, plays a bright-smiled, big-hearted prostitute. She's picked up by Richard Gere, who can't figure out how to drive a stick-shift car, and he likes her so much he hires her to be his date for some work events. Of course, one thing leads to another, and true love is found!

Touchstone Pictures

3. Father of the Bride (1991)
  • Coming to Netflix: TBD

One of the greatest comedy duos of the modern era is Martin Short and Steve Martin. And over 30 years ago, they teamed up in a pair of films about a man struggling to accept that his daughter has grown up in Father of the Bride

Martin plays the titular dad who plans his daughter’s wedding with the help of his wife (played by Diane Keaton) and a zany wedding planner named Franck (Short), not to be confused with Frank. The sequel, in which mother and daughter are both pregnant, is just as good. The Vatsnik, however, has created a deeply rooted fear of sleeping meds I can't shake.

2. Fried Green Tomatoes (1991)
  • Coming to Netflix: May 1, 2026

This iconic film weaves together two stories, both of which explore themes of friendship, love and self-discovery, across multiple generations. Mary Stuart Masterson and Mary-Louise Parker star as young women in the 1920s South, Kathy Bates turns up as an unhappy 1980s housewife, and Jessica Tandy plays the elderly woman who ties both tales together (with the help of some fried green tomatoes).

Universal Pictures

1. Schindler’s List (1993)
  • Coming to Netflix: May 1, 2026

Steven Spielberg‘s staggering biopic starring Liam Neesonas Oskar Schindler, a wartime industrialist credited with saving the lives of 1,200 Jews, is widely considered to be one of the best films ever made. The director famously didn’t make any money from the picture that grossed over $320 million worldwide. He instead used the profits to create the Righteous Persons Foundation, dedicated to ensuring “the moral lessons of the Holocaust are not forgotten.”

Schindler’s List is a masterwork that everyone should see at least once. It’s harrowing, but it’s also an inspiring testament to the power of an individual to make positive change.

Elvis and Priscilla Presley’s 1967 Wedding Cake: The 5-Foot Tower That Used 20 Pounds of Crisco

Fri, 05/01/2026 - 7:00am

When Elvis Presley married Priscilla Beaulieu at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas in 1967, the world expected an event. The couple were supposed to marry in California but the press caught wind of the plans, so the pair flew to Las Vegas to wed on May 1, trading one spectacle for another. The newlyweds were the top story, but the cake was the real star of the room. The cake, which cost $3,200 back when a brand-new car would set you back about $2,500, was an edible monument to 1960s excess. The confection dripped in light-pink frosting and came loaded with enough kirsch to make a guest lightheaded before the first dance.

The King didn't build a career on subtlety. Reports claim the star wanted something that looked like it belonged in a palace, even if it would end up in a floral-carpeted suite in Vegas. Designed and styled by the chef of the Aladdin hotel, Bjorn Jaeger, and made by the hotel’s pastry chef. Denis Martig, the recipe used 20 pounds of Crisco and 576 eggs. The final touches on the cake's recipe included 500 silver balls and 50 sugar hearts for extra sparkle.

The flavor profile was pure ‘60s camp. ““The cake itself was a yellow sponge cake. Each layer was filled twice with apricot marmalade and a kirsch flavored Bavarian cream,” Martig once said. All the layers were glazed with kirsch flavored fondant icing and decorated with royal icing and marzipan roses.”

The famous photo of Elvis and Priscilla cutting the cake shows the scale of the dessert. Priscilla had to reach up to chest level to find a spot to slide the knife. And that was just the second level. Because this was a Presley event, they had more than one cake, with dozens of smaller versions made for the press and staff.

Photo by Bettmann on Getty Images

Yet the big one remained the centerpiece. It sat perched on a table and served alongside silver platters of fried chicken, oysters Rockefeller, and poached salmon. It was a mix of Southern comfort and Vegas glitter.

It remains the most famous wedding cake in pop culture history. Elvis’s wedding cake was exactly like the man himself: too much, and yet, somehow, exactly enough. If you’re looking to recreate it, maybe skip the 20 pounds of shortening. But keep the brandy. Elvis would have wanted it that way.

37 Years Ago In 1989, Reba McEntire Topped the Charts With a Heartbreaking Song She Didn't Write

Fri, 05/01/2026 - 6:44am

On May 1, 1989, Reba McEntire released Sweet Sixteen, her appropriately titled sixteenth studio album. The release quickly became one of the most dominant of her career because it was packed with hits and staying power.

In fact, the record spent an impressive 16 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard country albums chart, fueled by four successful singles: "Walk On," "Til Love Comes Again," "Little Girl," and another standout track that carries a particularly interesting legacy.

That's because the song "Cathy’s Clown" is a remake of the 1960 classic originally recorded by The Everly Brothers.

Written by Don Everly and Phil Everly, the original version was a massive pop hit, known for its emotional vulnerability and tight sibling harmonies. It topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks starting May 23, 1960.

Nearly three decades later, McEntire, 71, took that familiar heartbreak and reshaped it for a country audience. Impressively, the country queen managed to do so without losing the song’s core sentiment.

Rather than simply covering the track, McEntire reinterpreted it. Her version leaned into a more dramatic, narrative-driven style, swapping the Everlys’ polished harmonies for a solo vocal performance filled with nuance and quiet intensity.

It was a shift that made the song feel less like a pop lament and more like a deeply personal country confession. The production followed suit, trading the original’s orchestral pop feel for a cleaner, contemporary country arrangement that fit seamlessly into late-1980s radio.

The gamble paid off because McEntire’s version of "Cathy’s Clown" climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. Like so many covers of songs, her take on the oldie proved even a well-known hit could find new life in the right hands.

More importantly, McEntire's remake demonstrated her skill as someone who could take existing material and make it distinctly her own.

Within the context of the album Sweet Sixteen, the song stood as both a tribute and a transformation. It connected McEntire to an earlier era of popular music while reinforcing her place at the forefront of country in 1989.

1977 Horror Film, Originally Censored in the United States, Is Suddenly Climbing the Charts 49 Years Later

Fri, 05/01/2026 - 6:21am

Nearly five decades after shocking audiences for all the wrong reasons, the 1977 horror sequel Exorcist II: The Heretic is suddenly finding new attention.

The movie recently ranked No. 28 on Rotten Tomatoes’ “30 Most Popular Movies Right Now,” surprising horror fans because the film has long been known as one of the most criticized sequels ever made.

Released four years after the groundbreaking 1973 film The Exorcist, the sequel followed Regan MacNeil, played again by Linda Blair, as she continued recovering from demonic possession. The film also starred Richard Burton, Louise Fletcher and Max von Sydow.

Even though the movie is now climbing popularity rankings, its reputation remains harsh. Rotten Tomatoes currently gives the film a 10% critic score and a 13% audience score. The site’s critics consensus reads: “Hokey mystical effects, lousy plotting and worse acting directly tarnish the first's chilling legacy.”

The sequel was directed by John Boorman, who took the franchise in a very different direction from the terrifying original movie. Instead of focusing only on horror, the sequel mixed science fiction, religion, psychology and mystical themes.

The story centers on Father Philip Lamont investigating the death of Father Merrin, the priest who died during Regan’s exorcism years earlier. The film introduced strange new ideas, including mind-linking machines, psychic powers, locust swarms and spiritual visions in Africa.

While the movie earned more than $30 million at the box office against a reported $14 million budget, audiences and critics reacted badly almost immediately after release.

At the time of its 1977 release, many viewers were stunned by how different the sequel felt compared to the original classic.

Film critic Gene Siskel of the Chicago Tribune reportedly gave the movie zero stars and called it “the worst major motion picture I've seen in almost eight years on the job.”

Still, not every reaction was negative.

Famous filmmaker Martin Scorsese later defended the movie’s deeper themes, per Collider. Scorsese said the film explored whether “great goodness bring[s] upon itself great evil,” adding that the movie “deserved better than it got.”

Over the years, the sequel slowly developed a cult following. Some viewers began praising its unusual visuals, dreamlike storytelling, and music composed by Ennio Morricone.

According to Britannica, the film was “widely panned” after release but later gained cult status among movie fans interested in ambitious Hollywood misfires.

That renewed interest appears to be growing again in 2026 as horror fans revisit older franchise films online and through streaming services.

Part of the movie’s lasting attention comes from its troubled production history.

The original creators of The Exorcist, writer William Peter Blatty and director William Friedkin, refused to return for the sequel because of lawsuits and disagreements tied to the first film.

Early plans reportedly called for a cheap sequel using unused footage from the original movie. But the project changed after playwright William Goodhart wrote a more ambitious script focused on philosophy, spirituality, and human consciousness.

Boorman later admitted he knowingly made a film very different from what audiences expected.

The production itself faced many problems. Scripts were constantly rewritten during filming, imported locusts used for scenes died quickly, and Boorman became seriously ill during production.

Even with its reputation, the sequel never completely disappeared. Special collector editions, Blu-ray releases, and screenings helped keep the movie alive among horror collectors and cult film fans.

A new 2025 documentary titled Boorman and the Devil also helped reignite discussion about the movie’s chaotic production and strange legacy. Now, almost 49 years after audiences first laughed, booed and walked out of theaters, Exorcist II: The Heretic is once again being talked about, this time by a new generation of curious horror viewers.

This Michigan Landmark With the World’s Longest Porch Turns 139 Today

Fri, 05/01/2026 - 6:10am

If you want to understand the true meaning of a "summer palace," you have to look toward the Straits of Mackinac. On May 1, 1887, the Grand Hotel officially opened its doors, built in a staggering 93 days to serve as the ultimate escape for Gilded Age travelers. Today, as it kicks off its 140th season, it remains one of the few places in the world where time doesn't just slow down—it practically stops.

The beauty of the Grand Hotel is rooted in its defiance of the modern world. There are no cars allowed on the island; guests arrive via horse-drawn carriage to a hotel that boasts the world’s longest porch (660 feet) and a strict dress code that requires a coat and tie for gentlemen after 6:30 PM. It’s a level of formality that might feel stifling elsewhere, but here, it’s the main attraction.

For many travelers, the hotel represents a "fairytale come to life." As one guest shared on Reddit: "I always thought the hype of Mackinac Island was a bit overblown... Glad to be proven wrong." And another who said, "It is a perfect remnant of the Gilded Age, if that’s what you’re after."

Experts agree that the hotel's longevity is no accident. It’s about the preservation of a very specific American tradition. Travel journalist Devorah Lev-Tov, writing for T+L, highlights the hotel's unique sensory experience: "A historic hotel dating back to 1887, known for its timeless design... the hotel offers a unique experience with its no-car policy on the island, relying on horse-drawn carriages and bicycles."

Even those who haven't stayed overnight find themselves drawn to the "Flirtation Walk" of that massive front porch. The late Dan Musser III, whose family managed the hotel for decades, once noted that the hotel’s success comes from a "turning point in the spring when you realize there's something special about this island, this hotel and what we try to do."

Whether you’re there to walk in the footsteps of the five U.S. Presidents who have visited, or you just want to sit in a rocking chair with a view of Lake Huron, the Grand Hotel remains the gold standard for "old-world" Michigan. Happy 139th to a landmark that still knows how to make an entrance.

1976 Country Album Carried a Hidden Debut From a Future Grammy Winner

Fri, 05/01/2026 - 5:59am

Fifty years ago on May 1, 1976, Johnny Cash released his 54th studio album.

But what they might not know are the two other reasons why the country legend's One Piece at a Time stood out for more than just its music.

At the time, Cash was already firmly established as one of country music’s most influential voices. One Piece at a Time marked a meaningful return to his roots because it was credited to "Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Three." The core members were Luther Perkins, who played lead guitar, Marshall Grant on the bass, and W.S. Holland on drums.

Cash hadn't used the credit since the 1960s, which at the time served as a nod to the stripped-down, signature sound that helped define his early career. When fans saw Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Three on One Piece at a Time, they knew they were getting that same musical style that first made Cash a star. Songs like "Daughter of a Railroad Man" and "Love Has Lost Again" capture that essence.

Ironically, Cash didn't write the country hit "Love Has Lost Again"—his daughter did.

Rosanne Cash wrote the tune before launching her own successful solo career. Cash putting the song on the album gave the world an early taste of her talent and served as a "passing of the torch" moment between the country musicgenerations

In the years that followed, Rosanne, 70, would go on to become a major force in country music in her own right with hits like "Tennessee Flat Top Box" and "Blue Moon With Heartache." But Cash's inclusion of her song on One Piece at a Time helped kick off all of that success.

She would go on to win four Grammy Awards, the first of which came in 1985. She won Best Female Country Vocal Performance for "I Don't Know Why You Don't Want Me." Rosanne has also won Grammys for:

  • Best Americana Album for The River & the Thread (2015)
  • Best American Roots Performance for "A Feather's Not a Bird" (2015)
  • Best American Roots Song for "A Feather's Not a Bird" with John Leventhal (2015)

Of course, country music fans know and love the album for the title track, which went on to become one of Cash’s most memorable hits of the era. It's a playful, storytelling-driven song about an auto worker who builds a car piece by piece over the years that showcased Cash’s enduring ability to blend humor, narrative, and relatability into a chart-topping country hit.

After reaching over to hug her co-host, Jones said, "It's one of those things where we can't do it all at the same time.” She then pointed out, "And also, you just had a whole mommy and me thing, and it was amazing."

"Yeah, but that wasn't with Poppy," Bush Hager said, to which Jones reassured her, "But she's coming."

"Should I lay?” Bush Hager asked, as she pretended to lie down on the table as if she were at a therapy session. That's when Sheinelle acknowledged, “You guys, we just had a moment collectively, but it's OK. We can't do it all at once.”

To that, Bush Hager then quipped, “It may look like things are great, but things are falling apart.”

In addition to Poppy, 10, she shares a daughter, Mila, 13, and a son, Hal, 6, with her husband, Henry Hager. Meanwhile, Jones has a son, Kayin, 16, and twins, Clara and Uche Jr., 13, whom she welcomed with her late husband, Uche Ojeh.

Fri, 05/01/2026 - 5:45am

It's been 59 years since Priscilla Presley and Elvis Presley tied the knot, and their wedding still captivates fans today.

After nearly eight years together, they tied the knot in Las Vegas, Nevada. However, according to a 2022 interview with The Guardian, Priscilla said the early days of their marriage were filled with unease.

“The beginning [of the marriage] was very difficult. But I knew what I was in for because I saw it at a very young age,” she began.

She added that the "gossip" surrounding their union was the "hardest part." Subsequently, Priscilla pulled back from reading newspapers or gossip magazines.

“I found out how vicious people could be. There were rumors I was pregnant, and that’s why he got married, and I’m going, ‘Oh my God, this is not gonna be good for me.’"

Priscilla felt acceptance by the public would be difficult. However, she admitted Elvis was always on her side.

“It was hard to get accepted. But [Elvis] always told me, ‘Don’t pay attention. Don’t even listen and don’t look at the tabloids. You know what the truth is, so just be cautious, but be aware.'”

Elvis and Priscilla's marriage was a top-secret affair. They kept the arrangements within a tight circle of family, friends, and trusted outsiders.

In fact, even her wedding dress shopping was kept under wraps. In a VOGUE interview, Priscilla revealed that she would go to bridal boutiques in disguise, bringing along Elvis' good friend, Charlie Hodge, as her "fiancé. “I’d go into the dressing room, and I’d come out with a wedding dress and ask Charlie, 'What do you think, darling, do you like it?' People [thought] that we were getting married,” she says.

Priscilla called the wedding "the best kept secret" in a video interview for Elvis by the Presleys, per PEOPLE Magazine. “It all had to be properly planned. ... We didn’t want this out, because we didn’t want this to turn out to be a ... circus.”

According to the official Graceland website, the couple's wedding took place at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas. The ceremony was held just before noon, with only 14 people in attendance. They had a larger late-morning reception afterward, where around 100 guests enjoyed a buffet-style meal.

Priscilla revealed that after such a secretive experience, she and Elvis were “happy to be married. We were most happy that we pulled it off, we were happy that our friends and family were there.”

Elvis and Priscilla Presley were married for six years and welcomed one daughter, Lisa Marie Presley. They divorced in 1973.

Your Birth Month, Your Message for May

Fri, 05/01/2026 - 5:33am

May carries a hopeful vibration that speaks to new possibilities. You will feel renewed as you enter this month, especially if you’re already receiving signs and confirmations from the universe. Omens promising happiness, fulfillment, and abundance have already come from your guardian angels and spirit team. You may have recognized these auspicious signs by seeing recurring angel numbers or by pulling tarot cards to divine spirit’s message. So, how do you know for sure what May has in store for you? Thanks to astrology, tarot, and numerology, there’s a message for May 2026 that aligns with your birth month. Read on to find your message.

Here’s Your May 2026 Message, Based on Your Birth Month

Check for the month you were born for pro insights.

January

Stop carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders, January. Having a January birthday means being influenced by Capricorn and Aquarius, which are the two Saturn-ruled zodiac signs. The Saturnian edge of your birth month speaks to being resilient, responsible, and hardworking. You are held to a higher standard of excellence. While you should continue working hard at your goals, your spiritual message for May says to focus on what you can manage. Don’t feel like you have to do everything all at once or that it’s up to you to fix other people’s problems. Take it one day at a time and prioritize your goals above all else.

February

Perspective is everything, February. You already know how important it is to remain open-minded, thanks to being co-ruled by esoteric Aquarius and fantastical Pisces. The cosmic energy of your birth month speaks to thinking outside of the box, as you’re gifted with the talent of visualization. The universe wants you to tap into your empathy and dreaminess throughout May. Instead of letting logic and rationale rule the roost, the universe says, let your imagination lead the way. You may feel a little delusional at times, but letting your mind wander could lead to a new perspective you hadn’t considered beforehand.

March

Don’t be so defensive, March. The past few months have left you feeling extra spicy. Your usually gentle Piscean energy has been bruised, leaving your Aries energy short-tempered and brash. It’s not your fault—the astrology of 2026 has been especially hard for all March birthdays. Luckily, your spirit team says that May will be easier if you must lower your defenses. This isn’t a sign to lower your standards or boundaries; however, your message for May encourages you to accept a helping hand. You don’t have to continue fighting alone if you’re willing to let your loved one’s step in and alleviate some of your tension.

April

This or that, April? Usually, you know what you want thanks to your assertive Aries attitude and resolute Taurus stamina. Making decisions and choosing a course of action comes rather easily to you. Although you may know what you want, the spiritual energy of May cautions you to weigh your options more carefully than you typically would. It might feel odd to move slowly, but doing so will allow you to move intentionally. Waiting to see what each avenue, venture, or option offers you will give you a better idea of what you want to do. The key is being patient while considering all options.

May

Happy birthday, May! Whether you’re a lovely Taurus or curious Gemini, you have so much to look forward to this month aside from celebrating your birthday. Your spirit team says it’s time to move it or lose it. Instead of feeling unsure and scatterbrained, you will feel uniquely confident in your next steps. Your mind will be clear, allowing you to see where a venture may lead or what a decision will entail. Normally, this much foresight comes with anxiety, but not this month. Your self-assurance will bloom when you’re courageous and brave. Don’t think twice if there’s something you wish to do, pursue, or become.

June

What will you have to celebrate, June? You take celebrating seriously thanks to being co-ruled by social Gemini and caring Cancer. It doesn’t matter if you’re honoring a friend, family member, or a near stranger. Uplifting others fills you with joy. Your spirit team wants you to know there will be much to celebrate in the weeks ahead. In particular, a small group of close-knit friends or a long-time bestie will want to share good news with you. Likewise, don’t hesitate to share your wins with your inner circle. Even if nothing is on your social calendar yet, trust that there will be ample opportunities for merriment all month long.

July

Away you go, July. The universe encourages you to start thinking about your next big adventure. On the one hand, your Cancerian nature may implore you to stay home and play it safe, but on the other hand, your spirited Leo attitude desires passion and excitement. May isn’t the time to be overly conservative with your whims, resources, and energy. You’re asked to dream bigger about where you want to go, not only this month, but for the rest of the year. This is the perfect time to plan an international trip, long-term vacation, or even look into visas elsewhere. The world is your oyster.

August

This too shall pass, August. Like everyone else born in August, you carry the tender-hearted Leo spirit and anxious Virgo mentality with you. The last few months may have tested your kindness, patience, and overall bandwidth. You could have gone through significant setbacks and losses during this time. Although the pain of heartbreak and disappointment lingers, your spirit team wants you to know that things will begin looking up starting this month. You may not believe this cautiously optimistic message right now, but trust that you will be in a better mental and emotional state by the end of May.

September

A new lease on life awaits, September. The first part of this year has pushed you to your limits. Your careful Virgo foresight has helped you plan accordingly, while your diplomatic Libra attitude has kept the peace. Managing yourself and everything else hasn’t been easy, but the fruits of your labor will pay off starting this month. Your spirit team says that May will produce real, tangible blessings. For some September babies, this might result in a new job or financial opportunity. For other September babies, there will be security and stability to look forward to. Regardless of what may unfold, you can trust that you’ll be rewarded for your hard work.

October

Honor your mental and emotional needs, October. Although you’re guided by balanced Libra, you’re also still predisposed to the emotional intensity of Scorpio. Working with November’s two star signs isn’t easy, since you may appear outwardly fine in an effort to hide your true feelings. You may feel more comfortable pretending like you’re okay, but the universe says May’s a month of healing and vulnerability. If you want to regain true mental and emotional balance, you may have to be more upfront about what’s bothering you. Opening up about your anxieties and pains can be scary, but it can also accelerate your healing journey.

November

An opportunity will come knocking, November. Answering the call might be equally scary and exciting. The Scorpio within you might be a bit suspicious, but the Sagittarius within you is ready for something new. Don’t overthink when this opportunity presents itself, because the universe is conspiring in your favor. Some November-born might have a chance to pursue love and romance, while other November-born ought to follow their creative spark. You’ll know what’s meant for you, since your intuition and discernment will be loud and clear when it arrives. Even if you’re trepidatious, you should still pursue the opportunity in good faith that it will bring joy and happiness.

December

Get out of your head, December. Despite having jovial Sagittarius within you, your serious Capricorn has taken the lead. Seeing all that could come is challenging if the first few months of 2026 have left you high and dry. Your mental health and sleep schedule could have been seriously affected. Spirit wants you to know that there’s a chance to move past these mental and emotional blockages this May. However, your ability to heal depends on how you can alchemize your fears, insecurities, and worries. Spirit says to find solace in journaling and dedicating time to a non-work-related hobby. Trust that better days are ahead when you find a healthy outlet for your stress.

9 Phrases To Shut Down a Micromanaging Boss, According to an HR Expert

Fri, 05/01/2026 - 5:27am

Given the state of the world and job market, you may feel guilty for complaining about your boss—at least you have a boss (and job, for that matter) in this economy. Yet one HR expert says you need not feel guilty about detesting micromanagement in the workplace.

"Dealing with a micromanaging boss is disempowering," says Shawnee Irmen-De Anda, the chief people officer at Thriveworks, a mental health company offering in-person and online therapy services nationwide. "It can make you question your abilities, your manager’s trust in you and also slow you down from doing an effective job. All of these can start to weigh on you and impact your mental health."

Irmen-De Anda has almost two decades of experience in human resources and talent acquisition. She's seen the harms of workplace micromanagement firsthand and says it's vital to know how to handle it.

"It is important to address the issues of micromanaging early, before the behavior becomes too ingrained in your work style," she states.

Of course, she knows it's easier said than done.

"Addressing it can be nerve-wracking, especially if it is causing you to feel like your manager does not have trust in you, but it’s important to do so early and candidly in order to create a more harmonious work environment and dynamic," she shares.

Having some go-to phrases to shut down a micromanaging boss (respectfully) can help you preserve your passion for your work. To help, Irmen-De Anda shares nine things to say to stop micromanagement in its tracks at work.

What Is Micromanagement?

"Micromanagement is when a manager is involved at a very detailed level in every area of your duties," Irmen-De Anda tells Parade.

Micromanagement may look different depending on the boss. For instance, your direct manager may require you to send any and all emails to them for approval before putting them out into the world. They may want complete access to your calendar and inbox or remain overly involved in the "minutiae of your day-to-day."

It can leave you feeling like you lack agency and your boss's trust, resulting in frustration, poor job satisfaction and basement-level self-confidence.

5 Common Signs of a Micromanaging Boss

When you know the signs of a micromanaging boss, you can take steps to rectify the issue (or flag it in job interviews and potentially turn down an offer). Irmen-De Anda's top five signs of a micromanaging boss are:

  1. Tracking every movement of yours. Every step you take toward completing a task and every mistake you make are tracked and noted. "This signals a lack of trust and can make you feel like you are under surveillance," Irmen-De Anda notes.
  2. They direct exactly how your work should be done. Expectations and instruction are to be expected in a manager-employee relationship, but it can veer into "too-much" territory with a micromanaging boss. "Over-directing exactly how something should be done demonstrates their need for control," the HR expert says.
  3. They require approval for every decisionyou need to make. The rules don't change even if the decision is small. "Unless there's a good reason for this—like a strict budget process—this takes any decision-making autonomy away from you and is a way of asserting their authority," she reports.
  4. They require very frequent check-ins. Irmen-De Anda isn't bemoaning weekly one-on-ones or daily huddles, especially during peak seasons. "Checking in with your manager can be healthy, but too often can be a sign that they need to control your progress rather than trusting your outcomes," she clarifies.
  5. They are highly critical. This one can feel the most toxic of all. "Micromanaging often goes hand-in-hand with perfectionism," Irmen-De Anda reveals. "While constructive feedback can be useful, an overly critical manager can lead you to lose trust in your abilities."

How To Deal With a Micromanaging Boss

Dealing with a micromanaging boss requires delicacy, curiosity and pre-emptive empathy and compassion.

"Give your boss the benefit of the doubt that they don’t understand that what they are doing is micromanaging," Irmen-De Anda advises. "They may be an inexperienced manager and feel they need to be very involved in every detail in order for them to do a good job, or they may have learned that behavior from a boss of theirs."

Still, you'll want to address the issue early, because the HR expert warns that a micromanaging boss can erode your self-confidence later.

"Have a candid conversation pointing to the specific behaviors and the impact that they are having on you," she says. "Try to get to the root cause of their behavior."

For instance, she notes that they might tell you they are under a lot of pressure from the powers that be to close the deal you are working on, or that a poor performer botched a presentation in the past. From there, Irmen-De Anda suggests being transparent about how their behavior affects you. The goal isn't to seek verbal revenge but to come to a place of mutual understanding and agreement.

If your boss seems willing to work with you, she shares that you can address their fears and work together to find solutions that alleviate their concerns, without overstepping into your lane at work.

But manage expectations; progress isn't guaranteed or linear.

"Unfortunately, for some micromanagers, the behavior is deeply entrenched, and it can be hard to change," she explains. "Depending on your relationship, you may be able to gently call out when these behaviors are creeping back in. If they are not receptive to change, however, you may need to address your own level of response and acceptance."

She says your HR team may be able to guide you on how to handle a micromanaging boss.

"If none of these actions result in behavior change and you feel it is negatively impacting your mental health or confidence in your abilities, that may be the time to consider a job change," she adds.

9 Phrases To Shut Down a Micromanaging Boss, According to an HR Expert 1. “I tend to do my best work with clear ownership”

You crave clarity and autonomy—two things many workplaces value. Yours might too, but your boss may need a heads up that you prefer little (to no) hand-holding.

"This phrase puts the focus on performance and offers autonomy as a solution for the best results," Irmen-De Anda says.

2. “I can tell this role and the work I do are important to you. How can I make you feel comfortable in stepping back?”

You and your boss are likely working toward the same goals. That means you're on the same team. That said, when they're constantly up in your business and not giving you any independence, they can feel more like an obstacle than a guidepost. These lines bring the focus back to the "team" aspect of office life.

"This is a collaborative way of finding a solution, without focusing too much on the problem," Irmen-De Anda states.

3. “I can lead this and will update you once the job is done"

It takes a certain amount of gumption to use this phrase on a micromanaging boss, but the payoff is huge if it works.

"This clearly asserts your confidence in your ability to run the project," Irmen-De Anda notes. "Adding that you will provide an update at the end of the job gives them a clear deliverable."

It also reminds your boss that you don't plan on leaving them out of the loop.

4. "I’m noticing a bottleneck. I think it would be more effective if I provide X rather than Y"

Irmen-De Anda says you may fill in the blanks by saying, "I think it would be more effective if I provide a weekly update rather than daily.”

"Managers care about efficiency, and this phrase places the focus on an opportunity for improvement rather than a frustration," she explains.

Related: 10 Best Phrases To Shut Down Workplace Gossip, According to Therapists

5. “I can run with this and will keep you cc’d for visibility"

This phrase is a great way to assert autonomy gently while alleviating a micromanaging boss's fears of the unknown.

"Managers often equate visibility with control," Irmen-De Anda says. "This gives a micromanager the feeling of control they desire without a need for constant oversight."

6. "To move faster, it would help if I could make the decisions at this level"

Red tape can hold back projects and teams. This phrase seeks to cut it out—and shut down a micromanaging boss by emphasizing how they could benefit from moving out of the way.

"This highlights an inefficiency and provides a solution without specifically calling out their behavior, making them more likely to ease off," Irmen-De Anda notes.

7. “I want to make sure we’re aligned on expectations"

Irmen-De Anda suggests immediately following this phrase with a question: "Are there any concerns about how I’m handling this?”

Does it put you in a vulnerable position or open you up to constructive criticism? Yes, but it also gets to the root cause and can lead to solutions beyond micromanagement.

"It gets at the heart of the matter without being combative and will help you both get on the same page," she says.

8. “Can I suggest some tools that will provide oversight of my progress without such frequent check-ins?”

Platforms—like project management systems and shared to-do lists—can ensure your micromanaging boss can keep an eye on project status without constantly bugging (and delaying) you. Irmen-De Anda loves that it focuses on a fix rather than the problem (and your boss may admire it too).

"It provides a solution that directly addresses their need for oversight," she says.

Related: 7 Direct Phrases to Shut Down Passive-Aggressive Behavior, According to a Psychologist

9. "Can we align on the outcome, and I’ll take it from there?"

Talk about diplomacy and subtle self-advocacy.

"Being outcomes-oriented moves the focus off the process and onto the end result," Irmen-De Anda explains. "Having an agreement on that end result should minimize the micromanaging to get there."

Final Takeaways

Micromanagement in the workplace can erode self-confidence and lead to frustration. Irmen-De Anda, an HR expert, suggests addressing it head-on.

  • Notice the signs of micromanagement. Constant criticism and over-involvement in your daily tasks (like requiring approval for every email you send) are among the signs of a micromanaging boss.
  • Lead with the benefit of the doubt. Remember, your boss may be inexperienced or under pressure. They may not mean to micromanage you.
  • Tell them how their micromanagement affects you. For instance, you might use phrases that mention the bottleneck their need for check-ins causes or that you work better when you have clear ownership of a project.
  • Focus on solutions. Think tools that let you update your boss on your status and negate the need for regular check-ins.

‘Brady Bunch’ Star Christopher Knight Reveals Rare Cast Bond That Still Lasts 58 Years Later — ‘Family’

Fri, 05/01/2026 - 5:17am

Christopher Knight opened up about his close bond with his Brady Bunch co-stars nearly 60 years after they first met as child actors. Knight, who played middle son Peter Brady on the ABCsitcom from 1969 to 1974, told People magazine that he considers his former castmates “family” even today.

"I mean, we were a big cast, that very much even today, acts like family,” Knight, 68, shared. “It was a special group of people. For the six of us who were still on this planet, um, we’re lifelong friends. I don't know, other than my own brothers and sisters and my own blood, there's nobody, whom I'm friends with that is from a deeper [moment], in time.”

“It's going on 60 years now, right?” the actor added of The Brady Bunch’s 1969 premiere. “And it actually exists a year earlier now because we did the pilot in '68. It's hard to believe it's been that long ago.”

Knight co-starred with Barry Williams, Maureen McCormick, Eve Plumb, Mike Lookinland, and Susan Olsen on the beloved sitcom about a blended family, and he still keeps in touch with all of them. Fellow Brady Bunch stars Robert Reed, Florence Henderson, and Ann B. Davis have since passed away.

Other Brady Bunch stars have talked about being ‘family’

Knight isn’t the only Brady Bunch cast member who cherishes the feeling of family shared with their co-stars. In an interview with Digital Journal, McCormick, who played eldest sister Marcia Brady, said she “dearly loved everyone connected with” the show—including those behind the scenes.

“I feel like it was one of those times when everything comes together, and it was just a magical connection,” the actress shared. “We had fun and everybody, including the crew, are in my heart forever.”

The Brady Bunch didn’t end with the ‘70s sitcom. The cast members went on to work together on a variety show, two TV movies, and multiple spinoffs. Most recently, they reunited for the HGTV home renovation series A Very Brady Renovation.

During an appearance on The Magificent Others podcast, Olsen, who played youngest child Cindy Brady, said the cast’s bond can’t really be explained to outsiders.

“I think anytime that they get us together and let us be ourselves, like the HGTV show, it's always good because we have, it's the most unusual relationship,” Olsen, 64, shared on the 2025 podcast. “And then for us kids, we did grow up together. We all know that there's only five other people on the planet that will ever really know what our childhoods were like. And if one of us were to die, we would all lose a limb.”

The One Disney Attraction Built 37 Years Ago Today That Everyone Still Wishes They Could Ride One Last Time

Fri, 05/01/2026 - 5:10am

If you walk into the heart of Disney’s Hollywood Studios today, you’ll see the stunning neon glow of the Chinese Theatre, but for a certain generation of travelers, the building feels like a beautiful shell.

On this day in 1989, The Great Movie Ride officially opened its doors, promising to take us "into the movies." While it’s been closed since 2017 to make way for Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, the nostalgia for this specific journey hasn't faded—it has only deepened.

For many, it wasn't just a ride; it was an education. As one user on Reddit poignantly shared: "I wouldn't have bothered with Alien or Casablanca at a young age if it wasn't for that ride... those rides might seem dated these days... But they're so charming, and nostalgic, and magical, taking the fictional and making it real."

The attraction mastered the art of the 'total environment.' It didn't just show you the movies; it made you smell the smoke of a Nostromo vent and feel the weight of an orchestral score. And it was one of the last bastions of the "live guide" era, where a Cast Member would literally step off the vehicle to engage in a shootout with gangsters or cowboys. That human touch made the experience feel alive in a way that modern, screen-based attractions often struggle to replicate.

Writing for Theme Park Insider, Robert Niles captured the feeling of many fans who couldn't make it back for a final farewell: "So here's what I miss most from The Great Movie Ride, a too-rare quality that GMR exemplified well—it gave its cast members an active role to play."

"As I always say—Great is right there in the title. We arrive in Orlando on 22nd August, it's killing me to miss having one last go. It's one of our family's favourites and was a must do for us," commented Kelly Muggleton.

Even though the park has transitioned from a working film studio into a place where you "live" your own adventure in Star Wars or Toy Story, there’s a distinct "Hollywood" identity that left with those rides. Built 37 years ago today, The Great Movie Ride proved that sometimes, the best way to travel isn't to a new planet—it’s just a few feet into the silver screen.

Dr Pepper Keeps Fans Cool With 2 New Summer Merch Drops

Fri, 05/01/2026 - 5:03am

Dr Pepper is upgrading its merch with two limited-time collections, one of which was inspired by a fan-favorite flavor only offered during the summer.

The soda? None other than the Creamy Coconut flavor launched in 2024, which quickly became a hit—so much so that the brand has brought it back season after season and fans remain adamant it "never should have left". Well, this year the company not only decided to bring it back yet again, but it's also getting its own merch collection because, as Dr Pepper put it, "the flavor of summer is here for a limited time only, but they can keep this merch forever."

That said, Dr Pepper also understands spinoffs, dirty sodas and coconut flavors aren't for everyone and could never replace its original formula. So it's also launching a limited-time vintage collection, dubbed Summer Americana, celebrating the beverage as an "ice-cold American tradition since 1885" with fresh additions to its classic lineup.

Dr Pepper Drops Vintage, Creamy Coconut-Inspired Merch Collections—Here's Where to Buy It

Dr Pepper's latest merch drop features an array of summer must-haves, such as towels, ice buckets, t-shirts, button-ups and denim jackets. Each collection offers a fresh, fashionable take on the iconic soft drinks.

National Anthem Singer's Technical Issue Leads to Cool Moment During NHL Game

Fri, 05/01/2026 - 4:46am

A microphone failure before a major NHL playoff game unexpectedly created one of the most heartwarming sports moments of the week after Buffalo Sabres fans joined together to help singer Cami Clune finish “O Canada” during Game 5 against the Boston Bruins.

The emotional scene took place at KeyBank Center on Thursday, before the first-round Stanley Cup Playoff matchup between the Buffalo Sabres and the Bruins.

Just seconds into Clune’s performance of the Canadian national anthem, her microphone repeatedly cut out. Instead of awkward silence filling the arena, thousands of fans instantly stepped in and sang the anthem with her.

The moment quickly spread online after TNT Sports US shared video clips of the crowd singing along to the song while Clune smiled through the technical problems. Fans online praised the Buffalo crowd for turning what could have been an embarrassing situation into a powerful show of unity.

Clune later responded to the viral clip herself, writing, “That’s me singing!🥹Buffalo had my back, GO SABRES💙💛 ”

She also shared her gratitude on Instagram, posting, “What a crazy but cool moment!! Thank you all for singing along,” before adding, “We have the best fans ever!”

The Sabres have long played “O Canada” before home games because Buffalo sits close to the Canadian border and has strong ties to nearby Ontario. Even when a visiting NHL team is not from Canada, the anthem remains part of the team’s game-night tradition.

That tradition made the crowd's response even more meaningful. Most of the nearly 19,000 fans inside the arena were American, but they confidently sang the Canadian anthem from start to finish while Clune’s microphone faded in and out.

The unexpected singalong became one of the most talked-about moments from the NHL playoffs this week. Clips shared by the Sabres, Clune, and NHL-related accounts collected hundreds of thousands of views across social media platforms.

Fans from both the United States and Canada flooded comment sections with emotional reactions.

One user wrote, “I guess there is still some faith left in society after all. Love to see it.”

Another added, “Buffalo to the rescue! 💯❤️”

A third comment praised the atmosphere inside the arena, saying, “Absolutely incredible. Buffalo loaded with real ones. Respect!!! ❤️❤️❤️”

Others joked that the city’s reputation received a boost from the moment, with one fan writing, “Buffalo just gained some aura 📈📈”

Another reaction read, “Pure class Buffalo!!! Well done 👏👏👏”

One viewer also pointed out how unusual the scene was in an all-American matchup, posting, “Never seen the Canadian anthem sung at a USA vs USA game. Love it!!”

Who Is Cami Clune?

Clune is no stranger to performing in front of large audiences. The Buffalo native rose to national attention during Season 19 of The Voicein 2020. During her blind audition, she earned a rare four-chair turn and a coach block, making her one of the standout contestants that season.

She originally chose John Legend as her coach before eventually joining Kelly Clarkson’s team after Clarkson used her steal during the knockout round. Clune later advanced to the semifinals.

Outside television, Clune has become a familiar voice in Buffalo sports. She serves as the official anthem singer for the Sabres and has also performed at Buffalo Bills games, NASCAR events and other major sporting events.

Tuesday’s emotional anthem moment happened before a tense playoff game that ended in disappointment for Buffalo fans. The Bruins defeated the Sabres 2-1 in overtime to stay alive in the series.

Defenseman Rasmus Dahlin scored early for Buffalo before Elias Lindholm tied the game in the second period. David Pastrnak later scored the overtime winner.

Even with the loss, the Sabres still lead the playoff series 3-2 as they continue trying to win their first playoff series in nearly two decades.

For many fans, though, the loudest moment of the night happened before the puck ever dropped.
