Move over, Wordle, Connections, Connections Sports Edition, and Mini Crossword—there’s a new NYT word game in town! The New York Times‘ recent game, “Strands,” is becoming increasingly popular as another daily activity fans can find on the NYT website and app.

With daily themes and “spangrams” to discover, this is the latest addictive game to cross off your to-do list before a new one pops up 24 hours later.

We’ll cover exactly how to play Strands, hints for today’s Spangram, and all of the answers for Strands #897 on Monday, August 17.

According to the New York Times, here’s exactly how to play Strands:

Find theme words to fill the board.

• Theme words stay highlighted in blue when found.
• Drag or tap letters to create words. If tapping, double-tap the last letter to submit.
• Theme words fill the board entirely. No theme words overlap.

Find the “spangram.”

• The spangram describes the puzzle’s theme and touches two opposite sides of the board. It may be two words.
• The spangram highlights in yellow when found.
• An example spangram with corresponding theme words: PEAR, FRUIT, BANANA, APPLE, etc.

Need a hint?

• Find non-theme words to get hints.
• For every three non-theme words you find, you earn a hint.
• Hints show the letters of a theme word. If there is already an active hint on the board, a hint will show that word’s letter order.

Following news of Hayden Panettiere’s passing, tributes began pouring in, with many leaving comments on her final Instagram post, which was shared on July 27.

Among them was actress Selma Blair, who posted two separate comments.

“I love you. Don’t be gone. Don’t be gone . Please. Please,” she first wrote, before following it up with another 11 minutes later. “I love you whale tail my friend.”

News of the  “Heroes” and “Nashville” star’s passing was confirmed by a statement shared by her father with ABC News. She was 36 years old.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen,” Skip Panettiere said, adding that he asks for privacy “as our family takes time to process this unimaginable loss.”

Along with Blair, many fans paid tribute.

“ayden, I’m crying tears for you. This is such a shock. You were a huge part of us millenial’s childhoods. You are so loved. I’m so sorry your life was cut so short. May you rest easy now with your brother. 🩷,” one person wrote.

“This is the most shocking news. I remember seeing one of your first roles in remember the titans. Loved your work in heroes as well. Rest easy and may god be with you Hayden ❤️,” another person commented.

Hayden Panettiere loved country music long before anyone asked her to sing it. She was afraid to try.

Panettiere died Sunday at 36. Her father, Skip Panettiere, called her “an incredible light and a force of nature” in a statement to ABC News, and asked for privacy while the family processes the loss. No cause has been released.

She’d been working toward an album since she was about 14, she said in 2012. She’d released a pop single, 2008’s “Wake Up Call.” “I felt like I was trying to be somebody I wasn’t,” she said.

Country was where her heart had always been. She was afraid that being from New York, people wouldn’t make the connection. She said she might have kept going in music if she’d had the confidence to try it.

Her breakout had been Claire Bennet, the indestructible cheerleader on NBC’s Heroes, and she starred on it for four seasons. Then came Nashville, which premiered on ABC in 2012 and later moved to CMT. Panettiere played Juliette Barnes for six seasons and earned two Golden Globe nominations, in 2013 and 2014.

The songs charted. Billboard lists 11 Panettiere songs on its Hot Country Songs chart, including “Telescope,” which reached country radio in October 2012 and stayed on the chart 15 weeks, longer than anything else she recorded. She was 23.

Her duet with Charles Esten, “Undermine,” reached No. 35. She charted twice more with Connie Britton, who played Rayna James, on “Wrong Song” and “He Ain’t Gonna Change.” Her best song was “Don’t Put Dirt On My Grave Just Yet,” which reached No. 34 in 2014.

She was living in Music City while the show filmed there, and she called it the perfect place to be. People came up to her about her work, she said, and wanted nothing from her.

She is survived by her daughter, Kaya, born in 2014.

A Game of Thrones was published in 1996, the first book in Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series.

Since its publication 30 years ago, A Game of Thrones and its respective sequels have become a cultural phenomenon. The novel is highly regarded and was recently named the “Best Epic Fantasy Novel” by Goodreads. On the reading platform, the book holds a 4.45 rating and has been rated more than 2.8 million times by readers/users.

A Game of Thrones was considered “the major fantasy publishing event of 1996” upon release. When HBO adapted the novel in 2011 for a series, interest was reignited, and sales were boosted. To date, the books in the A Song of Ice and Fire series have sold more than 100 million copies, been translated into more than 47 languages, and been subject to universal acclaim.

Taking place in the fictional world of Westeros, A Game of Thrones looks towards several noble families in the land, all of whom are vying for control of the Iron Throne. The novel depicts the political fractures between the different families, who are all also threatened by a looming, monstrous threat in the north. When a previously exiled princess begins building one of the most potentially intimidating armies the lands have ever seen, things begin to shift in a way that has not occurred in Westeros for hundreds of years.

While A Game of Thrones kicked off the series, four more novels of the series have been published since its 1996 release. Martin has stated he intends for the series to have two more books: The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring. That being said, Martin has not completed or published another part of the story since A Dance with Dragons in 2011. He has also alluded to the fact that should he pass away before completing the series, he would not allow another writer to finish it.

The series, as it currently stands by Martin, is available wherever books are sold.

For Hayden Panettiere, living thousands of miles from her daughter never meant being absent from her life. The Heroes and Nashville star died Sunday, August 16, at age 36. Her father, Skip Panettiere, confirmed her death to ABC News, remembering his daughter as an “incredible light and a force of nature.” No cause of death was immediately announced.

In the months before her death, Panettiere had spoken with unusual candor about 11-year-old Kaya Evdokia Klitschko, whom she shared with former fiancé Wladimir Klitschko. She pushed back strongly against the idea that allowing Kaya to live abroad with her father meant she had walked away from motherhood.

During a May appearance on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast, Panettiere addressed one of the most painful misconceptions surrounding her family.

“I mean, the idea that anybody would think that I would just give away my child and be okay with it is heartbreaking. Couldn’t be farther from the truth,” she said.

Panettiere explained that she had sought treatment while dealing with postpartum depression, anxiety and substance abuse. As she recovered, Kaya continued building a stable life in Europe with Klitschko.

Physical distance did not stop mother and daughter from maintaining a relationship.

“I have an incredible relationship with her. I go travel as much as I can. I see her. I do spend a lot of time on FaceTime with her, but we talk about really deep things,” Panettiere told Shetty on the podcast. “We have a really intense, incredible bond and I’m very grateful for that.”

She was equally determined that Kaya understood she remained loved by both parents.

“I know that she knows that she has two parents that would do anything in the world to make sure that she is happy and healthy, mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually. She in no way feels abandoned and that’s something that I’ve made sure to stay on top of and be very aware of.”

Panettiere also told CBS Mornings in May that Kaya was calling her more frequently and that they regularly connected through FaceTime.

Panettiere and Klitschko welcomed Kaya on December 9, 2014. After their relationship ended, Kaya remained with her father while Panettiere sought treatment.

The actress repeatedly described the separation as agonizing, but said she ultimately put her daughter’s stability ahead of her own desire to have her nearby.

“It was the hardest thing I could do,” she said on Red Table Talk in September 2022. “But the best thing for my daughter was to make sure she was okay, take care of myself and make sure I could be a good mom to her. And sometimes that means letting go.”

By 2026, Panettiere said Kaya spoke five languages and had built a full life surrounded by friends and family overseas.

Panettiere rarely missed an opportunity to speak proudly about her daughter.

“We are fortunate that we can travel a lot,” she told People in 2022. “She’s a happy kid open to a huge world. And she has more love than anybody I’ve ever met.”

She added, “She has a beautiful life. I was just with her. She’s just an amazing child. She’s smart and she’s funny and for whatever reason, she still loves me.”

Regarded as one of the most successful supergroups in music history, the Traveling Wilburys proved their lasting legacy after releasing a number of remarkable tracks, among which was the 1988 song “End of the Line.”

The band, made up of some of rock’s most notable musicians, including George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbison, turned the song into not only one of their most memorable tracks but also an enduring classic that has transcended generations.

As part of the band’s debut album, Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1, “End of the Line” showcased its catchy railroad-inspired sound, with Harrison playing a major role in writing the song.

Though all of the band members were credited with creating the masterpiece, the former lead guitarist of The Beatles was the one who came up with the core idea, especially the main chord sequence, according to Songfacts.

With a group formed by seasoned musicians, “End of the Line” reflects on life’s journey, including resilience, aging and accepting life exactly as it comes.

Somehow, this also served as a metaphor for reaching the end of one’s career or journey through life.

Unfortunately, Orbison did not live to see the song’s success, passing away just seven weeks after Volume 1 was released.

“End of the Line” later took on a more poignant meaning as a tribute to the late member, with the music video famously showcasing an empty rocking chair in his honor.

“It was a strange and sad experience shooting the video,” Jim Keltner, the trusted go-to drummer of the band and the unofficial sixth member of the group, told Billboard. “It was surreal, actually, because you’re there for hours and hours doing multiple takes, and there was that chair with the guitar on it the whole time by itself.”

Apart from being among the standout singles from their debut album alongside the smash hit “Handle with Care,” the track peaked at No. 63 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 2 on the Album Rock Tracks chart.

Nearly four decades after its introduction to the public, the track remains an enduring part of the Traveling Wilburys’ legacy, continuing to resonate with generations of listeners.

Their iconic status as a supergroup was reinforced by listeners who praised the timeless and memorable quality of “End of the Line” decades after its release.

Reddit contributors highlighted the song’s emotional impact, with one commenting, “Goosebumps during Orbison vocal.”

“‘End of the Line’ is possibly one of the best songs I’ve ever heard. They have such an amazing line up,” one wrote.

“It has always been one of my favorite songs and an awesome album. Orbison’s chair with the guitar and the picture of him is touching,” a commenter added.

The Traveling Wilburys may have been a short-lived supergroup, but “End of the Line” proved that their music could give their legacy lasting power.

Panettiere was a bit of an open book with fans, sharing the struggles and challenges she’s faced in front of and out of the spotlight. She would also often post updates and insights into her personal life on social media, with her online presence leaning into joy and positivity.  

In fact, the last post the Nashville star made on Instagram, dated July 27, captured a warm, happy moment with celebrity photographer Randall Slavin.

The black-and-white image shows the two embracing, with Panettiere looking into the camera and giving a cheeky smile. Almost winking, she playfully sticks her tongue out, while Slavin looks down at her and smiles.

“Good times and good friends @randallslavin ✨,” she wrote in the caption.

Fans took to the comments section to both compliment the actress and share their thoughts on her recently released memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, which she released just three months before her death.

“What a story and what fluidity you told it,” one wrote. “Thank you for sharing.”

“I took the book on a work trip and finished it before I even got off the plane!” another said. “It gave me chills! Your story is amazing!!! Thanks for sharing it with your fans.”

Though the post was a seemingly ordinary celebration of friendship and happiness when she shared it, Panettiere’s simple words take on a very different meaning after her death.

During her decades-long career in entertainment, she appeared in legendary series including Heroes and Nashville, as well as iconic films including Remember the Titans and the Scream franchise.

Off the screen, she chose to share her candid personal story, addressing long-term struggles with addiction, postpartum depression, domestic abuse, and the profound grief of losing her younger brother Jansen in 2023.

In the end, there was no farewell in Panettiere’s final post. Just a snapshot of friendship, laughter, and the kind of ordinary happiness that, after her death, feels all the more precious.

Beloved actress Hayden Panettiere died tragically on Sunday, August 15, just days before her 37th birthday.

While her cause of death has not yet been announced, her father, Skip Panettiere, released a statement on his daughter’s passing.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen,” Skip said in a statement to ABC News.

He asked for privacy “as our family takes time to process this unimaginable loss.”

In addition to Hayden, Skip and his ex-wife, Lesley Vogel, shared one son, Jansen Panettiere.

Jansen died at the young age of 28 in February 2023 from aortic valve complications and an undiagnosed enlarged heart.

“When I lost him, I felt like I lost half of my soul… I will always be heartbroken about [him], I will never be able to get over it,” Hayden told People in September 2024. “No matter how many years go by, I will never get over his loss.”

Hayden Panettiere was left heartbroken after the death of her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, in 2023.

Also a child actor, Jansen was just 28 years old when he died from aortic valve complications and an undiagnosed enlarged heart.

After losing her only sibling, the Heroes actress told People that she gained 40 pounds from the stress.

“It didn’t matter what I did, what I ate. I know stress and cortisol running through your body can do that,” she said at the time. “Now I think my body was protecting itself, shielding itself from the world.”

She added, “When I lost him, I felt like I lost half of my soul… I will always be heartbroken about [him], I will never be able to get over it. No matter how many years go by, I will never get over his loss.”

The beloved actress — who also battled opioid addiction, alcohol abuse and postpartum depression — paid tribute to her late brother on the two-year anniversary of his death.

“2 years ago today, I lost my little brother,” she captioned a February 2025 Instagram post. “This amazing human being touched the lives of so many. Especially mine. The pain isn’t quantifiable. I pray you’re in a beautiful place J. That you’re at peace and that when all is said and done…I’ll see you again. Rest easy brother. You are so missed and beyond loved. 💜”

Later that year, on what would have been Jansen’s 31st birthday, Hayden shared a sweet photo from their childhood.

“My little brother Jansen would’ve turned 31 today. He was a remarkable human being. He was wise beyond his years and operated at a higher spiritual level than anyone I’ve ever met. He was everything that is good and pure in this world,” she wrote. “I miss him every single day but I know his spirit is always near, watching over and protecting me and my family. I love you to infinity and beyond J and we will be together again one day.”

The Nashville actress died on Sunday, August 16, at the age of 36. While her cause of death has not been revealed, her father announced the tragic news.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen,” Skip Panettiere told ABC News.

In a piece titled “Hayden Panettiere Never Stopped Choosing Her Daughter,” published in Momé magazine on July 21, 2026, the Heroes and Nashville actress opened up about her daughter’s traumatic birth and subsequent postpartum depression.

Panettiere suffered from a severe postpartum hemorrhage following Kaya’s birth via C-section. She nearly died and required seven blood transfusions and a second surgery to repair the vessels that had begun to fail to keep her alive.

“I closed my eyes and just prayed for my daughter to be okay,” Panettiere said of the terrifying ordeal. “I truly was ready to go if it was my time. Kaya being safe and healthy was all that mattered.”

In recovery after the surgery, Panettiere recalled getting her vitals checked while her fiancé at the time, Wladimir Klitschko, rocked the baby to sleep. Looking at her daughter, Panettiere remembered feeling like she was looking at a stranger’s baby.

“I felt nothing,” she explained. “And now I had to figure out how to bond with her. It seemed like an impossible task.”

Panettiere said that in the weeks and months following Kaya’s birth, she felt “empty” and turned to alcohol to cope with her depression.

“I turned to wine, which ultimately ended up leading to an alcohol dependency. It was how I would get through each day,” she said.

Eventually, she went to treatment and came home sober with a diagnosis of postpartum depression. But the help Panettiere received did not address what truly caused the issue.

“Despite the diagnosis, the treatment was centered around the addiction — not the root cause,” she said.

While battling substance abuse, Panettiere made a then-controversial decision after breaking up with Klitschko in 2018. He moved back to his native Ukraine, and she decided to give him full custody of Kaya, a decision that was the hardest of her life.

“It wasn’t a decision I made lightly, nor was it a decision I even wanted to make,” she said. “I was going through a really challenging time in my life … I knew I needed to be able to put her first so that I could get the help I needed and be the mom she needed me to be.”

When Momé asked Panettiere who she is now, she immediately responded, “I’m a warrior. I’m a woman who has been through more trauma than I ever thought I’d face, but I’m resilient.”

She also shared a hopeful update on the status of her relationship with Kaya.

“I love my daughter, and I’m so proud of the young woman she is becoming,” Panettiere said. “I talk to her all the time, and I feel so connected to her.”

“One day she’ll understand my story, and why I wasn’t able to be with her all the time,” she continued. “You have to let go of what you wish you could change, and be present, and make the most of what you have now.”

She concluded, “I’m a work in progress — we all are. I take each day as it comes. I’m doing the work, and I’m doing my best.”

When she and Klitschko split up in 2018, Panettiere made the  “incredibly difficult” decision to give him full custody of their daughter as she was struggling and seeking treatment for alcoholism, substance abuse, and postpartum depression.

“I mean, the idea that anybody would think that I would just give away my child and be okay with it is heartbreaking. Couldn’t be further from the truth,” she said during a May 2026 appearance on Jay Shetty’s podcast On Purpose. “I think a misconception is that I have been, in the past, forced into treatment when, in fact, I have been the one who has sought it out.”

Kaya lives in Europe with her father, but she and Panettiere stay in contact.

“[She] knows that she’s got two parents that love her, and I know in my heart that she feels supported,” she said on Shetty’s podcast. “I have an incredible relationship with her. I go travel as much as I can. I see her. I do spend a lot of time on FaceTime with her, but we talk about really deep things.

“We have a really intense, incredible bond and I’m very grateful for that,” she added. “I know that she knows that she has two parents that would do anything in the world to make sure that she is happy and healthy, mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually. She in no way feels abandoned and that’s something that I’ve made sure to stay on top of and be very aware of.”

Along with her daughter, she is survived by her parents, Lesley Vogel and Skip Panettiere.

Late actress Hayden Panettiere struggled for years with mental health and drug addiction before her tragic death at age 36.

The former child star opened up about her opioid addiction and alcohol abuse in 2022, telling People, “I was on top of the world and I ruined it.”

“I’d think I hit rock bottom, but then there’s that trap door that opens,” she said at the time. “I put a lot of work into myself and I had to be willing to be incredibly honest.”

The Heroes star revealed that she had suffered severely from postpartum depression after the birth of her daughter Kaya — whom she shares with ex Wladimir Klitschko.

“I wasn’t OK,” she wrote in her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, which was released May 19. “I had to figure out how to bond with her. It felt like an insurmountable task, and I was only on the first day.”

She added, “It wasn’t panic that was sitting in my chest. It was nothing. A total blackout of emotion, like my soul was dead.”

According to the Remember the Titans star, she “needed a drink to function,” which led to her being written out of her hit TV series, Nashville.

“My fans and the press were hugely sympathetic — and I’ll always be grateful for that — but a part of my career I’d come to depend on suffered,” she continued.

While promoting her memoir, Panettiere told Jay Shetty that she was dropped by Neutrogena after a decade as the company’s spokesperson after sharing her postpartum depression journey publicly.

“Neutrogena, I was with for 10 years. I mean, they have morals clauses, which had a huge impact in my life,” she explained during a May appearance on the On Purpose With Jay Shetty podcast. “I was a teenager, and I had all of the paparazzi around me catching all of these gory moments. Like, every moment, every cigarette that I smoked, or bad outfit…Neutrogena was a huge part of my life. Of all the things that they would fire me over, this was the last thing that I thought they would ever fire me over.”

She added, “Never for a second did I think or care that anyone would have a bad reaction to it. It was my truth.”

Panettiere passed away on Sunday, August 16, TMZ reported.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen,” her rep said in a statement to ABC News.

Her cause of death has not yet been revealed.

TMZ reported that Panettiere passed away earlier on Sunday. Law enforcement sources who spoke to the outlet confirm police responded to an incident involving Panettiere on Sunday and that there is currently an open investigation.

At this time, no further information on her cause of death is available.

Selma Blair left two comments on Panettiere’s last Instagram post.

“I love you. Don’t be gone. Don’t be gone. Please. Please,” Blair wrote in her first comment, following it up with another one 11 minutes later. “I love you whale tail my friend.”

The actress released her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, in May 2026. The 320-page book chronicles her life as a child star, her battles with addiction and postpartum depression, and her path toward healing.

Panettiere is survived by her parents Skip and Lesley and her 11-year-old daughter Kaya.

Panettiere’s brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, died at the age 28 in 2023 from aortic valve complications caused by enlarged heart syndrome.

Earlier this year, Panettiere had released a memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, which explored her experiences and career within the entertainment industry, beginning from a very young age. The memoir also touched upon Panettiere’s experiences with postpartum depression and addiction, as well as her grief over the loss of her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, who died in 2023.

Panettiere also previously shared her experiences giving birth to her daughter, Kaya, explaining that she nearly died in childbirth. Panettiere’s daughter, who was born in 2014, lives with Panettiere’s ex-fiancé, Wladimir Klitschko, in Ukraine. However, prior to her death, Panettiere had indicated that she had a strong relationship with her, saying, “I’m so blessed to have a great relationship with her…I fly over there as much as I can. I’m on FaceTime with her all the time. She’s now 11 years old, and she’s calling Mommy more and more.”

Panettiere’s tragic death comes as a shock, ahead of what would have been her 37th birthday this Friday, Aug. 21. There is no doubt that, in the coming days, tributes will pour in from fans and costars alike, as she touched many lives throughout her career.
