2007 Hit Action Film Is Suddenly Climbing the Charts 19 Years After Its Release
Nearly two decades after its release, a high-octane action film is getting a surprising second life.
Shooter, directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Mark Wahlberg, is suddenly climbing the charts again, landing among the top 10 most popular movies on Netflix globally.
Originally released in 2007, Shooter follows Bob Lee Swagger, a former Marine sniper who is pulled back into action for what he believes is a mission to prevent an assassination only to find himself framed and on the run. What unfolds is a tense, fast-paced thriller filled with conspiracy, betrayal and survival against the odds.
"For me, if you take an action movie there's a chance of it being only that and you don't get a chance to make a statement about anything at all," said Fuqua in an interview with Black Film. "And when I read the script…I knew we could take it a little further and at least hint around and suggest, and say certain things about our political climate. So it wasn't a movie that was preachy because the movie wasn't about that exactly—it's an action thriller. But, I knew that I had the opportunity to say something."
At the time of its release, the film earned a solid following for its gripping premise and Wahlberg's intense performance. But like many action movies of the era, it has found renewed relevance in the streaming age, where audiences are rediscovering it through a new lens.
"Mark brings a humanity to it. He's a humble guy. He's a guy next door. He's a young soldier on our ships and in Iraq," Fuqua said of Wahlberg in an interview with Collider. "He could be your son or your brother or your best friend. He's not some big muscle bound superhero with all the quick one liners and all of that. He's just a regular guy and I think that's the new hero of the day. It's just regular people doing what they can. That's what makes it work."
Shooter's resurgence on Netflix highlights a growing trend: older films gaining unexpected popularity years later, driven by algorithm recommendations and global accessibility. For many viewers, Shooter feels like a hidden gem, while for others, it's a nostalgic revisit to a standout action film of the 2000s.

1974 Scorsese Film About Heartbreak and Reinvention Still Feels Relevant Today
Nearly 50 years after its release, Martin Scorsese's film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore is gaining renewed attention. The Criterion Collection is releasing the film’s first-ever 4K restoration, which was supervised and approved by Scorsese.
The upcoming release includes commentary from Scorsese, Ellen Burstyn, and Jodie Foster, along with archival contributions from the late Diane Ladd and Kris Kristofferson.
The 1974 film follows a woman rebuilding her life after the heartbreak of her husband's death. The challenges of balancing work, family, and uncertainty that Alice navigated still feel familiar today.
In a recent Reddit discussion among fans of the film, one viewer highlighted a scene where Alice breaks down in the bathroom, Flo by her side to lend support.
The Redditor explained, “I think for anyone who’s going through a major life transition, that feeling is so real…there’s nothing you can do. You just keep living.”
In November 2025, after Ladd’s death, fans revisited her performance.
“She should have won an Oscar for Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. The Academy embarrassed themselves in that category,” one fan noted on Reddit.
Both Ladd and Burstyn earned Oscar nominations for their work in the 1974 film. Burstyn won in the Best Actress in a Leading Role category.

World’s First True Rock Supergroup Started Historic Reunion Concert 21 Years Ago
Twenty-one years ago today, Cream, the British rock band dubbed the world’s first true supergroup, made a historic series of concerts for their reunion.
After weeks of speculation about a possible reunion, guitarist and lead vocalist Eric Clapton confirmed their comeback during his guest appearance on BBC Radio 2’s The Johnnie Walker Show on December 17, 2004.
A year later, the supergroup officially made their highly anticipated reunion at London’s Royal Albert Hall on May 2.
Clapton, along with bandmates Jack Bruce on bass and vocals and Ginger Baker on drums, delivered a series of high-energy performances as they kicked off a four-night show.
At the time, the audience enjoyed Cream's 19-song setlist, featuring their classic hits and rarely performed tracks.
This included “White Room,” “Sleepy Time Time,” “We’re Going Wrong,” “Sunshine of Your Love” as their encore, and the debut of “Pressed Rat and Warthog,” “Badge,” and a cover of T-Bone Walker’s “Stormy Monday.”

In one of their previous interviews, Baker admitted that he was initially hesitant about Clapton’s idea to have a reunion show.
“Then Eric phoned me up and convinced me to do it,” Ginger shared, as cited by American Songwriter, adding “and I’m very glad he did, because I was a bit wary about it, and I’m more than pleasantly surprised. I’m really thoroughly enjoying it, and I think the band’s better than it’s ever been.”
According to Clapton, his decision to reunite the band was driven by his curiosity about what a comeback would look like.
“I think over the years, I’d started to wonder what it’d be like,” the singer said. “And it was the kind of first question most people would ask. Just you in our normal conversations, I’d have with people about music, eventually people would ask me if I would ever consider reforming Cream, as if it were my responsibility. … And, you know, initially I was really reluctant and … actually was tired of the question.”
As mentioned, the 2005 show was their first reunion in nearly four decades, with Cream’s last performance on November 26, 1968.
What made the reunion even more special was that it took place at the same venue where they had their iconic 1968 performance.
Following their four-night run at the Royal Albert Hall, Cream headed to Madison Square Garden for a second set of shows, a three-night run from October 24 to 26, 2005.
This was also the trio’s last performance together, as Bruce passed away in 2014 and Baker in 2019.

Golden Tempo just won the 152nd Kentucky Derby, and even though the horse entered the race with 23-1 odds, the three-year-old colt isn’t the one who stole the spotlight. Cherie DeVaux became the first female trainer to have a horse finish first at the iconic event, and everyone wants to know more about her.

'70s Rock Legend Released First No. 1 Hit Song, Which Was Written Overnight, 11 Years After Beginning Career
Even the biggest legends sometimes have to wait for their biggest hit.
For Bruce Springsteen, that moment came in 1984 with "Dancing in the Dark," a track that would become one of the defining songs of his career more than a decade after he first broke onto the scene in the early 1970s.
Springsteen made his official debut in 1973 with the release of his first album, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J., introducing his signature storytelling style and Jersey Shore sound. While the album earned strong critical praise, it wasn't an immediate commercial breakthrough, setting the stage for his gradual rise to fame.
By the early 80s, Springsteen was under pressure to deliver a standout single for his album Born in the U.S.A. The legendary rocker wrote "Dancing in the Dark" quickly, essentially overnight, after his manager, Jon Landau, told him the album needed a hit.
"Jon had been bothering me to write a single, which is something he rarely does," Springsteen said in a 1987 interview. "But he did that day. And he wanted something direct. That seemed to be what he was hitting on me for at the time."
That urgency translated into the song's now-iconic energy.
"I was angry. I had written a lot of songs and was kind of fed up with the whole thing. We'd been making the record for a long time, and I was bored with the whole situation," Springsteen recalled. "That particular night I came home and sat on the edge of my bed and the thing I remember thinking first was that we had a record, but it wasn’t necessarily finished; I could change the whole thing right now if I wanted to."
Built around a driving beat and introspective lyrics about frustration and self-doubt, the track struck a chord with listeners. It went on to become Springsteen's first major chart-topping rock hit, reaching No. 1 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart in 1984 and helping propel the album to massive commercial success.
The song also became a cultural moment thanks to its memorable music video, which featured a young Courteney Cox being pulled onstage to dance with Springsteen, an image that remains instantly recognizable decades later.
"I thought I was in the wrong place," Cox said in an interview, recalling the audition and being in the midst of so many professional dancers. "I was like, 'I don't know what they're doing, but I can't even bend my leg. Like, this is it.'" But, she managed to land the job and the rest has become pop culture history.
"Dancing in the Dark" marked a turning point, showing that even after years in the industry, Springsteen could evolve and connect with a broader audience in a new way.
More than 40 years later, the song remains one of his most enduring hits and serves as a reminder that sometimes the biggest breakthroughs happen when you're pushed to create something new, fast, and from a place of raw honesty.

1970 Soft Rock Classic, That Became a Career-Defining Song for ’70s Legend, Ranked Among ‘Greatest Songs of All Time’
More than 50 years after it first appeared on the landmark 1970 album Moondance, Van Morrison’s beloved soft rock ballad “Into the Mystic” is still being celebrated as one of the greatest songs ever recorded.
Rolling Stone ranked the track at No. 462 on its updated list of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time,” once again placing the dreamy classic among music’s most respected recordings. The recognition adds another major milestone to a song that many fans and critics consider Morrison’s defining masterpiece.
“Into the Mystic” became one of the songs most closely tied to Morrison’s career. Rolling Stone described the track as “delectably arranged” and “transportingly sung,” calling it “the definitive Morrison song.” The magazine also praised the song for feeling “like a lover’s whisper.”

Even Morrison himself admitted that the song’s deeper meaning remained mysterious to him. Reflecting on his songwriting during that era, he said, “So many of my songs from that Seventies period, I haven’t a clue what they’re about. A lot of the time, I was just picking up on a vibe.”
Recorded between September and November 1969 at A&R Recording Studios in New York City, “Into the Mystic” quickly stood out as one of the emotional centerpieces of Moondance. The song blended soft rock, folk, soul, jazz and spiritual themes into a sound that became closely linked to Morrison’s style.
Music critics have long praised the song’s poetic writing and emotional pull. A review from Rolling Stone famously called it “the heart of Moondance,” praising lyrics including: “I want to rock your gypsy soul/Just like in the days of old/And magnificently we will fold/Into the mystic.”
The song’s dreamy atmosphere also sparked many interpretations over the years. Morrison once explained that the title was originally written as “Into the Misty” before he changed it because the music carried “something of an ethereal feeling.”
Critics often connected the song to spiritual searching, love and transformation. Per JSTOR, Johnny Rogan described the recording as something that sounded both heavenly and deeply connected to Morrison’s Belfast roots.

More than five decades after its release, “Into the Mystic” remains one of Morrison’s most popular songs worldwide.
The track is currently Morrison’s second most-streamed song on Spotify, behind “Brown Eyed Girl.” It also reached No. 5 on Billboard’s Rock Digital Song Sales chart and hit No. 1 on Ireland’s radio airplay chart in 2022.
Over the years, many famous artists recorded their own versions of the track. Musicians including Joe Cocker, Michael McDonald, Zac Brown Band, The Wallflowers and Bob Dylan have all performed or recorded the song. On Friday's broadcast of Today, Dreyer rocked several colorful outfits inspired by the Kentucky Derby. One included a green dress and a brighter green hat with pink accents. A second look featured a pink floral dress and a coordinating pink hat—and she playfully completed the outfit with a pair of white Crocs.
She also shared that took input from her three sons ahead of the "Run for the Roses."
“I will try on a lot of my dresses, and Ollie, my middle guy, just thinks I look pretty in everything," she explained. "But Calvin is very opinionated, and he’ll be like, ‘No, you can’t wear that. Nope, I don’t like it.’ Or, ‘Yes, that’s pretty.’ If Calvin doesn’t like it, I’m not wearing it because if he doesn’t like it, someone else won’t too."

Nancy Guthrie Update: New Video Shows Masked Man in Savannah's Mom's Neighborhood
Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie‘s mother, Nancy Guthrie, is still missing three months after her Feb. 1 abduction in Tucson, Ariz., with a new video showing a masked man stealing plants in the 84-year-old's neighborhood.
Recently, News 4 Tucson (KVOA) published footage and stills from a Ring camera in the Catalina Foothills neighborhood, not far away from Nancy's home.
A masked thief is shown in the video footage wearing gloves and a baseball cap, and stealing potted cacti from a driveway. The video was taken at approximately 11 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29. According to the neighbor, who wanted to remain anonymous but posted the clip to the Ring app, the suspect drove a gray Ford F-150.
There is no evidence that the man in the new Ring video is connected to Nancy's case. However, neighbors seemed surprised by the clip, according to KVOA, especially considering that the Pima County Sheriff's Office (PCSD) had increased patrols in the area after neighbors complained about a YouTuber "harassing" residents, KVOA previously reported.

"It is someone walking on your property late at night, uninvited, it might be a small crime, but committing a crime, and it is disturbing," Jeff Lamie, who lives a few homes down from Nancy, told News 4 Tucson. "This drives the point home that we have to be watchful, be aware of our homes but also of our neighbors."
When KVOA reached out to the PCSD about the new footage of the masked person, the department responded, "We have not been advised of anything like this. We will do some research and keep you posted."
On May 1, the investigation into Nancy's disappearance officially reached the three-month mark. The 84-year-old was last seen at her home on the evening of Jan. 31, with family members reporting her missing on Feb. 1. Despite Savannah offering a $1 million reward and the FBI releasing a video and photos showing a masked man on Nancy's front porch, no suspect has been named in the case.

Despite achieving significant commercial success throughout their career, it took '70s rock band the Doobie Brothers five years to top the Billboard Hot 100.
The Doobie Brothers was formed in 1970 in San Jose, California, by guitarist Tom Johnston, drummer John Hartman, bassist Dave Shogren and guitarist Patrick Simmons. After producing four studio albums—garnering initial success with hits like "Listen to the Music" and the cover of The Arnold Singers original "Jesus Is Just Alright" from their 1972 album, Toulouse Street—the band finally achieved a No. 1 hit with "Black Water."

"Black Water" was an organic and somewhat unexpected triumph for the Doobie Brothers. Much of its success stemmed from a Roanoke, Virginia AM radio station called WROV-AM, which played the song repeatedly due to the region's proximity to the Blackwater River.
The song was originally released as a B-side to "Another Park, Another Sunday" on their fourth album, What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits. The band initially believed the song's sparse acoustic arrangement and experimental a cappella vocals would not fare well as a single. However, after high regional demand and positive listener reviews, they re-released the track as a single in November 1974.
After a few months, the song climbed up the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 1 in March 1975 for one week. The chart-topping track marked a massive milestone in the band's career, further solidifying them as a dominant force in the rock genre.
In 1979, the band followed up their No. 1 success by topping the Hot 100 for a second time with the single, "What a Fool Believes." That track famously won two Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Even after decades, both chart-toppers continue to be recognized as some of the '70s' most defining rock classics.

George Lucas’ American Graffiti has long been considered a cultural touchstone. The director’s second full-length feature, it’s a coming-of-age comedy that borrows from his own teenage years, capturing the sights and sounds of 1962 in a way that turned nostalgia into a cinematic time capsule. Even better: The film was just ranked the best rock movie of 1973 by Ultimate Classic Rock.
Set in the summer of 1962, right after high school graduation and just before Beatlemania, the film rides shotgun with a group of teenagers cruising, drag-racing, sock-hopping, and, of course, listening to Wolfman Jack’s rock-and-roll hits on the radio. American Graffiti is just full of fun trivia like that. Beyond the music, the film itself was forced to overcome hurdle after hurdle. The biggest might have been that producers were angling for a TV movie release. That is, until Francis Ford Coppola boarded the project as a producer, flexed his Oscar-winning Godfather moxie, and insisted on a theatrical release. Made ‘em an offer they couldn't refuse, eh?
The film’s cast was stacked — Richard Dreyfuss, Ron Howard, Cindy Williams, Candy Clark, Harrison Ford — but again, not without obstacles. Ford, who was working as a carpenter to support his wife and two kids, per Mental Floss, was approached for the role of Bob Falfa, but wouldn’t agree to the part unless he could keep his hair long. They compromised by fitting the newbie with a Stetson.
Meanwhile, Mackenzie Phillips, the daughter of John Phillips, the lead singer of The Mamas & the Papas, was just 12 years old at the time of filming and had to be legally taken under guardianship of a producer, per California law. She lived with the producer’s family for the duration of production.
Today, the film is a blueprint for nostalgia-driven storytelling and teen hangout cinema, influencing everything from Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused to Amy Heckerling’s Fast Times at Ridgemont High and even the broader teen comedy wave of John Hughes’ classics.

"Pancho and Lefty," written and first recorded by Townes Van Zandt, has since been ranked among the greatest songs of all time by Rolling Stone, celebrated for its storytelling and emotional depth.
"I realize that I wrote it," Van Zandt said in an interview. "But it's hard to take credit for the writing because it came from out of the blue. It was like it came through me, and it's a real nice song."
Originally released on Van Zandt's album The Late Great Townes Van Zandt, the song flew largely under the radar and didn't achieve major commercial success at the time. But its haunting narrative, centered on the lives of two outlaws and the consequences of betrayal, quickly earned it a reputation as a songwriter's masterpiece.
