Nancy Guthrie Update: Elizabeth Smart Offers Hope in Ongoing Search for Missing 84-Year-Old

Wed, 05/06/2026 - 3:06pm

Elizabeth Smart is sharing a message of hope in a new interview where she discussed the Nancy Guthrie case. Smart, 38, was abducted when she was 14. She was held captive for nine months before being rescued in 2003.

"She could absolutely still be alive," Smart told CNN‘s Erin Burnett in an interview on Tuesday, May 5. "There are cases that span many more years than mine does, and they came back alive. We’re talking years and years, so she could absolutely still be alive."

"Of course, there is the alternative, but until we know? We have to keep looking...she deserves—either way—to be brought home," Smart added.

Investigators believe that Guthrie, 84, was abducted from her Arizona home in the middle of the night on Sunday, Feb. 1. Despite receiving thousands of tips, neither the Pima County Sheriff's Department nor the FBI have been able to identify a suspect.

After the 90-day mark passed in Guthrie's disappearance, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos urged the public to come forward with information.

"The reward money is still there—it’s there for a reason. We think somebody out there knows something. We know they do. We know someone out there knows what happened. Call us," Nanos told KVOA.

Outside of DNA being sent to the FBI's lab for advanced testing last month, there haven't been any new updates in the case. Regardless, experts don't feel as though the case has gone cold and authorities are still working through leads in hopes of finding answers.

Who Won ‘Jeopardy’ Today? (May 6, 2026) Plus, the Final Jeopardy Answer

Wed, 05/06/2026 - 3:00pm

There are three things guaranteed in the world today: Death, taxes, and Jeopardy! being on. Believe it or not, the iconic game show has been on the air for over 60 years (though the modern incarnation we know and love technically debuted in 1984). Under the watchful eye of Ken Jennings (who himself was a record-breaking champion), Jeopardy! puts three people's trivia skills and reflexes to the ultimate test. And so many of the greats to grace those podiums started by simply watching the show as it aired on weekdays, as millions have done for over half a century.

Here's a spoiler-filled recap of who won Jeopardy! today, plus the answer to Final Jeopardy.

The clue: "About 10,000 sq. miles, this region was the subject of a 19th c. war, declared independence in 1917, reorganized in 1921 & is under dispute to this day."

The answer: What is Crimea?

With a runway of $20,400, Williams made a smart play and wagered only $400, getting it wrong and ending with $20k, while Crisenberry entered with $7,400, wagered everything and doubled her final score to $14,800, still falling short of Williams’ total. Black had a rough outing, entering with negative $800, unable to participate in Final Jeopardy.

1974 Controversial Indie Film Ranked 'Best Horror Movie of All Time'

Wed, 05/06/2026 - 2:44pm

Few movies evoke such a visceral response as that of 1974's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Gory, disturbing, and utterly haunting, the slasher film directed by Tobe Hooper is widely considered to be one of the most influential in the genre, and was ranked by Variety as the "Best Horror Movie of All Time." The publication wrote the movie, "created a mythology of horror, one that feels even more resonant today than it did 50 years ago. The film channeled the descent of the American spirit that we can now feel all around us."

The indie movie (made for just around $100,000), was found to be incredibly controversial in part to it being marketed as a "true story," but also due to the scenes depicting torture, cannibalism, and extreme terror.

🎬SIGN UP for Parade’s Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox🎬

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre follows five teenaged friends including final girl Sally, and her disabled brother, Franklin, who run out of gas while on a road trip in rural Texas. While exploring an abandoned house and property nearby, the group and fall prey to a family of cannibalistic murderers and grave robbers, including the iconic (and terrifying) Leatherface. One by one the road trippers are pursued, each in increasingly gory and violent ways, trying to make it out of the utter nightmare alive.

Marketing the film falsely as a true story increased its popularity intensely upon release. Despite its relatively tiny budget, over the course of eight years it grossed more than $30 million in the United States and Canada at the box office.

Critics have long called the film one of the best in the horror realm and credit it with redefining the slasher genre. Writer David Hogan said, "The driving force of 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' is something far more horrible than aberrant sexuality: total insanity." The character of Leatherface is often listed along the likes of Jason, Michael Myers, and Freddy as iconic characters in the horror world. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre has be attributed as a major influence for many filmmakers including Wes Craven, Ridley Scott, and Rob Zombie.

For cinephiles and slasher fans, it makes sense that the 1974 film has made a lasting impact, and one that keeps us up at night to this very day.

Stephen King Was Worried About This Four-Part Netflix Series — And Now Praises It

Wed, 05/06/2026 - 2:43pm

When Stephen King explained that Lord of the Flies was the novel that made him want to become a writer, it was clear that he would be apprehensive about the Netflix adaptation. He’s no stranger to noting the problems with adaptations of his own work, so he’s vocal when others’ work hasn’t been turned into movies and shows in the right way.

That didn’t stop him from watching it, though. The only way to make a decision about the quality of work is to watch it all, and it turns out that it was worth it for King.

Stephen King Praises ‘Lord of the Flies’ on Netflix

King took to social media to share his thoughts about the four-part TV series, sharing that while he had his “doubts,” he found the series “remarkable.” He went on to share, “Captures all the horror and mystery of lost children descending into...well, you decide.”

LORD OF THE FLIES (Netflix): I had my doubts, but it's remarkable. Captures all the horror and mystery of lost children descending into...well, you decide.

— Stephen King (@StephenKing) May 5, 2026

For those who have read the novel, you’ll know how traumatizing it is. The horror isn’t in the situation the stranded young boys start off in, but in the steps that they take to survive. It’s a look at how people end up being the worst monsters, as survival means being the fittest and the person willing to make the hard choices.

The Netflix series, which actually aired on the BBC in the UK first back in February 2026, is the first time the William Golding novel has been adapted for TV. There have been three movie attempts, but nothing quite captured the horror and the darkness that the TV series has.

Stephen King Isn’t the Only Person Praising ‘Lord of the Flies’

While King is one whom many will turn to for a review, it’s not just the horror author who has given this latest adaptation praise. The show currently holds a 96% Rotten Tomatoes score.

Many critics have shared the positives about Adolescence co-creator Jack Thorne, capturing the real meaning of the 1954 novel. Not only has Thorne told the story, but he’s also fleshed out elements with thoughtful observations. There’s plenty of time to catch up on this series, which now has King’s approval.

1975 Hit Musical Film, Starring ‘70s Rocker, Became the Longest-Running Theatrical Release in Movie History

Wed, 05/06/2026 - 2:41pm

Five decades ago, the iconic '70s hard rocker Meat Loaf made his film debut in the 1975 cult classic, TheRocky Horror Picture Show.

Released in the U.S. on September 26, 1975, TheRocky Horror Picture Show was a highly controversial film. While the movie starred big names such as Tim Curry, Patricia Quinn and of course Meat Loaf, it touched on taboo themes at the time including gender nonconformity, open sexuality and anti-establishment. These details ultimately caused the film to flop commercially, despite flourishing in queer-positive spaces.

Like many things that were ahead of their time, TheRocky Horror Picture Show eventually made its way back into mainstream spaces. In the late 1970s, the movie transitioned from daytime showings to midnight screenings, driving up theater attendance with interactive elements and allowing the film to build the cult following that has endured for decades. Today, the film is recognized as the longest-running theatrical release in movie history.

TheRocky Horror Picture Show is a musical parody that pokes fun at sci-fi stereotypes and the B-horror genre. The film follows a newly engaged couple, Brad and Janet (portrayed by Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon) as they seek shelter from a storm in a mysterious castle owned by a mad scientist named Frank-N-Furter, who is also a pansexual alien.

Throughout the film, Brad and Janet are immersed in a new world full of unique personas, sexual experimentation and hedonism. The pair navigate their situation while Frank-N-Furter and his cronies attempt to create the scientifically perfect muscle man and return to their home planet of Transsexual in the galaxy of Transylvania.

Meat Loaf's Involvement

Meat Loaf was initially involved with TheRocky Horror Picture Show due to his prior working relationship with the film's creator, Richard O'Brien, who also starred in the film as Riff-Raff. The two had previously collaborated on the original Los Angeles stage production at the Roxy Theatre after O'Brien saw Meat Loaf's performance in the musical Hair. O'Brien was so impressed by Meat Loaf's stage presence that he offered him an audition for the roles of Eddie and Dr. Everett Scott.

During the audition process for the musical, O'Brien reportedly admitted that no one had been able to perfect Eddie's signature song "Hot Patootie — Bless My Soul," a fast-paced, high-energy track and one of the most memorable parts of the show.

“They come to me on the part of ‘Hot Patootie,’ and Richard O’Brien is here at these rehearsals… he said ‘on this song you’ll never be able to get all the words in. … I wrote it and I can’t sing all the words,'" said Meat Loaf in an interview with Gold Radio. “I looked at him and said ‘I can sing all the words.’ Nobody could ever get in and just make those words fly through it. I just love telling people ‘I can do that’ and then being able to do it.”

Once the musical was approved for a film adaptation, it only made sense for O'Brien to have Meat Loaf reprise his role as Eddie. To this day, the film remains a favorite among alternative demographics, with Eddie's scene persevering as one of the most iconic moments in musical cinema.

1966 Folk-Pop Anthem Nobody in the Band Liked Hit No. 1 60 Years Ago

Wed, 05/06/2026 - 2:23pm

Sixty years ago this week, an iconic '60s folk-pop quartet hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 with a song nobody in the band actually liked.

The Mamas & the Papas climbed to No. 1 with "Monday, Monday" on May 7, 1966, and held the top spot for three straight weeks. It would turn out to be their only chart-topper.

🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬

A Song Written in 20 Minutes

Songwriter John Phillipscranked out Monday, Monday in roughly 20 minutes after bandmate Denny Doherty prodded him for new material while the group waited for "California Dreamin'" to break out. The track landed on their 1966 debut album, If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears, released through Dunhill Records that February. Members of the legendary Wrecking Crew handled the instrumental backing, including Hal Blaine on drums, Joe Osborn on bass, and Larry Knechtel on keys.

Related: 1965 Classic Took 44 Takes to Record 61 Years Ago Today

Doherty sang lead, and he later said he thought the track was a throwaway. "Nobody likes Monday, so I thought it was just a song about the working man," he said. CassElliot and Michelle Phillips reportedly weren't fans either.

A No. 1 Hit and a Grammy

The public disagreed. Monday, Monday knocked off the previous chart-topper and held the No. 1 spot for three weeks straight. If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears climbed all the way to No. 1 on the Billboard 200, the only Mamas & the Papas album to ever do that. On March 2, 1967, the group took home a Grammy for Best Contemporary (R&R) Group Performance, Vocal or Instrumental.

Sixty years on, the song still gets cued up every time someone needs a soundtrack for hating their alarm clock.

"By day, we're soaking in the sun, but at night...? We're fully locked in to all things Love Island with this limited-edition can in our hands," the brand continued. "Ready to drink in every moment with us?"

If You Live in This State You Could Be Getting up to a $500 Tax Rebate

Wed, 05/06/2026 - 2:03pm

If you filed your taxes on time, you may already have your max refund, but citizens of Georgia will see an extra boost. The one-time rebate, approved by Gov. Brian Kemp, has already begun distribution to taxpayers in the state.

Related: Why Your Social Security Benefits Might Be Taxed for the First Time Ever

The Details

Georgia’s $1.2 billion tax rebate will go to single filers, head-of-household filers, and married couples who qualify under the state’s one-time rebate offer. Single filers will see a check for up to $250, head-of-household filers can snag $375, and married couples will receive up to $500, depending on eligibility. Rebate deposits start on Monday.

There are several factors that determine whether you’ll see a rebate, and you can check whether you qualify. One absolute is that you’ll have to file both 2024 and 2025 taxes. If you requested an extension for 2025, you’ll have until October to file, and you’ll be eligible for the rebate afterwards as long as you meet other requirements.

Related: People Are Collecting Tax Refunds From COVID Thanks to a New Ruling—Here's How You Can Get In On It

If You Haven't Filed

If you’ve yet to file your taxes but want to get the rebate, there’s still time. Qualifying individuals and families can file for free, and the IRS notes there isn’t a late penalty if you’re owed a refund. And if you have taxes to pay but can’t necessarily afford them right now, you can still file and set up a payment plan. Filing immediately, even if you owe taxes, means you’ll avoid additional penalties.

One extra note taxpayers should know while waiting for their tax refund is that the state will not pay out more than the filer paid in taxes. So if you’re a married couple who qualifies for the $500 rebate but only paid $400 in taxes, you’ll only receive a $400 rebate check.

The Impact

Many Americans are feeling the squeeze in their finances as the prices of goods and services continue to skyrocket. While an extra $250-$500 may not compensate Georgians for the over $ 1,000 they spent on tariffs, it does help ease the burden this month on your grocery budget, utility bill, or unexpected expense.

So whether you’re a Georgia resident who has already filed or still need to, you may have a nice bonus waiting for you. Make sure to keep an eye on your account or mailbox over the next 4-6 weeks so you can claim your rebate.

Who Are Ted Turner’s Children and Grandchildren?

Wed, 05/06/2026 - 1:57pm

Legendary media pioneer Ted Turner died on Wednesday, May 6, at the age of 87. The philanthropist and entrepreneur is survived by his five children and 14 grandchildren.

Ted Turner, a Visionary Legend

Turner’s media legacy includes a rich history of firsts. He began his career with Turner Advertising Company. By the mid-1970s, he had launched TBS Superstation and bought two major sports teams (the Atlanta Braves and the Atlanta Hawks). In 1980, he debuted the first 24-7 global news network — CNN.

The mogul’s extensive career also includes launching CNN Headline News, TNT, Cartoon Network, and Turner Classic Movies.

Turner Enterprises said in a statement (released on Wednesday), “On behalf of the Turner family, it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of philanthropist, environmentalist and cable pioneer Ted Turner who died peacefully today at age 87, surrounded by his family.”

Along with citing his extensive career, the statement also read, “He was a man known for his no-holds-barred delivery, endearing sense of humor, and underlying loyalty to those around him…He is survived by his five children — Laura Turner Seydel (Rutherford), Robert E. (Teddy) Turner IV (Blair), Rhett Turner, Beau Turner (Georgia), Jennifer Turner Garlington (Peek), fourteen grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.”

Ted Turner’s Children

Even though Turner was almost always in the spotlight, he didn't raise his children in the public eye. Turner welcomed two children with his first wife, Judy (Nye) Turner, daughter Laura, and son “Teddy.” He also had three children with Jane Smith Turner: Beau, Rhett, and Jennifer.

Turner’s eldest daughter, Laura Seydel, is following in her dad’s footsteps. No, she’s not a budding media mogul. Instead, she takes after her dad’s environmentalist side. Seydel is the chair of the Captain Planet Foundation and serves on boards for organizations including Project Drawdown and Waterkeeper Alliance. Her brother Robert Edward “Teddy” Turner IV has worked in television production and the yachting industry. Teddy is currently a high school economics teacher.

Beau Turner is Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Turner Endangered Species Fund and the Director of Natural Resources and Biodiversity for Turner Enterprises, Inc. Beau’s brother, Rhett, is a filmmaker and photographer who is the president of Red Sky Productions. “Jennie” (Turner) Garlington is a Trustee of the Turner Foundation. She formerly served on the board of directors for the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.

Ted Turner’s Grandchildren

Turner wasn’t just a grandpa. He was also a great-grandpa! The media maverick had a large family, with 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The Turner Enterprises’ statement asked for privacy during this difficult time, allowing the family to “grieve the death of their beloved patriarch.”

Mike Farrell On the 1 'M*A*S*H' Story That Made B.J. 'Human'

Wed, 05/06/2026 - 1:43pm

Mike Farrell recently reflected on his time playing Capt. B.J. Hunnicutt on M*A*S*H. The army medics weren't perfect while they were away in Korea. Farrell, 87, revealed the note he gave to the show's creator and how it was addressed.

Mike Farrell Wanted B.J.’s Cheating Storyline Because It Was Human

The actor said the story "evolved out of a very short scene that Larry Gelbart wrote," on the Still Here Hollywood podcast.Blythe Dannerplayed Carlye Breslin Walton in the episode, "The More I See You." She had an affair with Hawkeye (Alan Alda) in medical school, but it ended. She returned as a nurse and reunited with him.

Hawkeye asked B.J. if he disapproved of him spending time with Carlye. B.J. didn't cast judgment on his friend, but he hasn't cheated himself, only "tempted."

Farrell revealed that after filming, he told Gelbart it wasn't "human for B.J. to have never been tempted." The next year a writer asked how he would feel if B.J. was put in the same position.

"It depends on how you resolve it," Farrell answered. "And I said OK, and we went on and did the show with where B.J. is called by a Nurse Kelly, to help one of the nurses who's just gotten a Dear Jane, and he goes into the tent, and she's weeping."

The characters kiss and B.J. felt so guilty he immediately wrote a letter to Peggy about the kiss. Hawkeye wouldn't let him and tore it up. His advice was to tell her in person.

Farrell said he felt lucky to be part of the show. He admitted there wasn't a clear resolution the audience could see, but was happy with how it was done.

1965 Rock Classic Was Recorded 61 Years Ago Today

Wed, 05/06/2026 - 1:33pm

On May 6, 1965, late singer James Brown took to the Miami recording studio Criteria Studios to record his iconic tune, "I Got You (I Feel Good)," as reported by Criteria Studios.

While "I Got You (I Feel Good)" is one of Brown's biggest hits, he's also known for songs like "It's A Man's Man's Man's World," "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," and "Super Bad." In a 1968 interview with DJ Ed Baer, Brown, who died when he was 73 in 2006, revealed he came up with his best songwriting while out on the road. Brown was quick to clarify that he had no idea why being in the car helped him produce some of his greatest hits.

"It's always better to write when you're moving. I don't know why. I wrote 'It's A Man's World' while moving along, and I wrote 'I Feel Good,' and 'Papa's Bag' while I was in a car. You know, it's so unusual. I can't understand it, but this is the way God gives you. It's the way it comes up," said Brown in the 1968 interview.

Brown also shared that he enjoyed traveling while working as a musician. He explained that not only did he perform his songs throughout the country, but he also did speaking engagements to encourage youths to stay in school.

James Brown Said That He Wasn't 'Very Good at Writing Music'

In the 1968 interview, Brown said he wasn't "very good at writing music" for his songs. He explained that during each recording, he would "put [down] a few notes" and tell the members of his band what he wanted the track to sound like. In addition, Brown said he would "set up the arrangement" and direct his band in the recording sessions because he wanted full creative control as the songwriter.

"Nobody knows you like yourself," continued the musician while speaking to Baer.

During the interview, Brown also described his sound as "soul" with a "driving beat."

Crush 'Heads Back to the '90s' with New Big Troppa Punch Soda

Wed, 05/06/2026 - 1:31pm

Crush has long remained one of the most popular soda choices in supermarket aisles for a reason.

Providing the ultimate thirst-quenching sensation to all those in need of a refreshing beverage, Crush's sodas also manage to deliver quality-first flavor that helps set it apart from its competitors.

While we'll always reach for some of the brand's many classic products like Grape or Orange soda, Crush is giving fans even more variety with the launch of a nostalgic new flavor.

According to Allrecipes, Keurig Dr. Pepper is once again looking to decades gone by with the release of their newest flavor innovation, Crush's Back to the 90s Big Troppa Punch.

Like last year's Back to the 80s Electric Blue Razz Soda, the new flavor is specifically meant to capture the signature flavor trends of the 1990s, a decade where tropical fruit flavored drinks were all the craze.

While Big Troppa Punch never actually existed back then, Crush's new flavor is sure to please fans looking for a nostalgic trip back to the 1990s, alongside those who happen to be born post-2000.

So far, Keurig Dr. Pepper has confirmed the Back to the 90s Big Troppa Punch will act as a "tropical punch soda" with a "bold, fruit-forward" flavor profile. Though the company didn't explicitly state what fruits these might mean, Allrecipes did point out that the can design features a strawberry and pineapple, likely confirming the main flavors set to be used in the soda.

As expected, the announcement of Crush's Back to the 90s Big Troppa Punch has already met with widespread excitement (and a slight degree of confusion) across social media. While some fans have understandably asked whether the flavor actually existed in '90s, most were quick to highlight their enthusiasm for the upcoming flavor.

As popular food blogger markie_devo wrote on Instagram, "Crush is killing it once again with these retro looking limited-time offers!"

The Man Behind TV’s Most Controversial Soap Moments Says Modern Storytelling Is in Trouble

Wed, 05/06/2026 - 1:26pm

Hollyoaks creator Sir Phil Redmond has challenged the television industry over the abundance of content being served, focusing on quantity rather than the quality of storytelling.

Redmond attended the Creative Cities Convention in Liverpool, where he hosted a keynote address covering “The Future of Storytelling.”

During the conversation, Redmond challenged the digital age of content consumption. He argued that the modern consumer suffers from a form of digital boredom, with viewers thumbing through thumbnails searching for something to watch, making snap judgments based upon trailers and thumbnails when “You suddenly realize you’ve lost 30 minutes,” which happens to be the approximate length of a modern episode of a British soap opera.

Redmond explained how digital algorithms on streaming services are built to serve viewers “more of the same,” which, in turn, leads to “digital boredom” as viewers lack diversity in what they consume.

“The thing about being a storyteller is how you have to surprise people,” Redmond shared. “That’s the art of storytelling. You have to keep surprising, that’s what creativity is all about.”

🎬 SIGN UP for Parade’s Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬

Redmond was known for pushing boundaries and viewers' expectations with Hollyoaks and his previously commissioned work, Grange Hill and Brookside.

Brookside in particular tackled many subjects that were considered to be taboo; these included the first lesbian kiss between Beth Jordache (Anna Friel) and Margaret Clemence (Nicola Stephenson), the first openly gay character with Gordon Collins (Nigel Crowley), amongst many other hard-hitting storylines, such as heroin addiction and the controversial relationship between Georgia (Helen Grace) and Nathan 'Nat' Simpson (John Sandford).

Redmond's influence on television continues to be felt to this day, as Hollyoaks remains one of the most talked-about series in British television, pushing boundaries with stories addressing topics such as far-right extremism, eating disorders, sexual assault, and more.

Redmond also assisted in revamping the ITV soap opera Emmerdale in 1993, including a historic plane crash that skyrocketed the series to over 18 million viewers as the story unfolded.

Hollyoaks airs Monday through Wednesday on E4 in the U.K., with episodes airing globally on YouTube a week later.

Oncologists Are Begging People To Stop Using This Common Cleaning Product

Wed, 05/06/2026 - 1:25pm

It goes without saying—but we'll say it anyway—that you'd likely do anything in your power to protect yourself against cancer. But it can often feel hopeless, especially if cancer runs in your family or you know of a young, healthy person who developed the disease.

Oncologists want to shift the narrative about the constellation of factors that can increase cancer risk, some of which are in our control.

"Most people think about cancer risk in terms of genetics or big lifestyle factors like smoking," says Dr. Amar Rewari, MD, the chief of radiation oncology for Luminis Health, an adjunct assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and a podcast host. "But what we’re exposed to in our homes every day matters too. Cancer risk is often shaped by small exposures that add up over time."

Another oncologist agrees. Family history matters when it comes to cancer risk, but so do the products we use in our home. We're exposed to them daily, after all.

"Many household products release chemicals into the air we breathe, and even if each exposure is small, it can add to our overall 'chemical load' over time," Dr. Lee Hong, MD, Ph.D., a medical oncologist specializing in thoracic oncology at City of Hope Orange County, tells Parade.

These days, you may see tons of news headlines and social media posts raising flags about chemicals in household and personal care products and cancer risk. It's scary. But the oncologists Parade spoke with want to be clear: Fear is not their endgame.

"This is not about being afraid of your environment," Dr. Rewari says. "It is about understanding it so you can make simple, practical choices where it makes sense."

To help you create a healthier home, oncologists share one cleaning product they do not recommend. Here's what to know.

The Common Cleaning Product To Avoid, According to Oncologists

Oncologists are urging people to stop using air fresheners, saying some research suggests that using this common cleaning product might expose you to harmful chemicals that could increase your cancer risk.

"Walk into almost any home, office or car, and you’re likely greeted by the comforting scent of lavender, citrus or 'fresh linen,'" reports Dr. Michael J. Levitt, MD, FACP, HMDC, a hematologist/oncologist at Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center. "These fragrances are designed to make spaces feel clean and inviting. But behind those pleasant aromas, scientists are asking a more unsettling question: what are we actually breathing in?"

Fiordaliso/Getty Images

Dr. Levitt and the other oncologists Parade spoke with agree that, often, we're breathing in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released by many air fresheners. While "organic" is buzzy in the health and wellness space, VOCs are a group of chemicals, and substances such as benzene and formaldehyde fall under their umbrella.

"At high levels or with prolonged exposure, these compounds have been linked to a range of health concerns," Dr. Levitt states. "They don’t simply vanish after being sprayed. Instead, they can linger in the air and react with other substances, forming additional pollutants indoors."

🩺SIGN UP for Parade’s health newsletter with expert-approved tips, healthy eats, exercises, news & more to help you stay healthy & feel your best self💊

For instance, VOCs have been associated with a higher risk of lung cancer. According to the American Lung Association, there aren't any studies directly linking air fresheners to lung health issues, but at least one is in the works.

"We don’t have conclusive 'air freshener causes cancer in humans' proof, but from an exposure-reduction standpoint, it’s not unreasonable if you want to cut back on these products, especially if used intensively in small, poorly ventilated spaces," Dr. Hong explains.

There's also no hard, fast guideline on what qualifies as "unsafe exposure" to air fresheners.

"There is no defined level of normal household use that has been shown to be unsafe," Dr. Rewari says. "Cancer risk develops over time and is influenced by many factors, not one product."

Related: Oncologists Say This Is the #1 Cancer Risk Factor No One Talks About

Ingredients in Air Fresheners

Air fresheners can contain volatile organic compounds.

"These can be natural, synthetic or semi-synthetic, and any given air freshener typically contains a mix," states Dr. Adeel Khan, MD, MPH, MS, a hematologist/oncologist and epidemiologist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

Dr. Khan explains that some ingredients in air fresheners that may pose health risks include:

  • Terpenes. Plant-derived compounds in "natural" scents, like pinene (for a pine/fresh scent) and linalool (for a lavender/floral scent). "These are generally considered to be the safest, but they can cause respiratory irritation," Dr. Khan says.
  • Formaldehyde. Dr. Khan warns that terpenes can react with certain molecules to generate formaldehyde, a synthetic VOC and known carcinogen.
  • Other synthetic VOCs. Aldehydes give products a fresh, soapy scent, and items with esters smell fruity. Formaldehyde is an aldehyde, but the risks of other synthetic VOCs are less established," Dr. Khan says.
  • Phthalates. Phthalates, including diethyl phthalate, are in air fresheners to stabilize the fragrance and let the aroma linger. But Dr. Khan warns that phthalates are linked to endocrine disruption and cancers, including breast cancer.

Related: Oncologists Are Begging You To Stop Making This Microwave Mistake Immediately

Other Ways To Freshen Your Air

Air freshener exposure might raise cancer risk, which is scary. But remember, you can't change what already happened.

"Focusing on past exposure is not helpful," Dr. Rewari says. "What you can do is make small changes going forward if you want to. Cutting back or switching to other options is a simple way to reduce exposure without adding stress."

The easiest way? Open a window.

"Opening windows when possible can make a big difference," Dr. Rewari recommends. "Improving ventilation and addressing the source of odors is often more effective than covering them up. Things like taking out trash regularly, managing humidity or using an air purifier can help."

Dr. Khan shares some other products—likely available at your grocery store (if you don't already have them)—also exist.

"Odor-absorbing compounds like baking soda or activated charcoal also offer safe, noninhaled solutions to rid smells," Dr. Khan tells Parade. "For added scent, natural aromas from entirely natural sources such as flowers, boiled citrus peels and fresh cloves are wholesome alternatives to air fresheners."

4 More Oncologist-Backed Tips To Lower Your Cancer Risk

Besides revamping your playbook for keeping your indoor air fresh by ditching air fresheners and—dare we say it—opening a window, there are other practical ways to lower cancer risk. Oncologists suggest adapting (or eliminating) habits, such as:

  1. Eating a balanced diet (but not focusing on perfection). Dr. Rewari says eating more fruits, vegetables and whole foods and cutting back on heavily processed foods can help lower your cancer risk. "It does not have to be perfect," he emphasizes. "Consistency matters more."
  2. Practice safe sun. Slather on sunscreed and avoid tanning beds. The risk of skin cancer, including melanoma, is cumulative and tied to ultraviolet radiation exposure," Dr. Khan notes.
  3. Don't smoke or vape. If you do? "Get help quitting," Dr. Hong urges. "Tobacco is still one of the biggest preventable causes of cancer."
  4. Stay up to date on recommended cancer screenings. Depending on your age and risk factors, you may be due for a colon cancer screening or mammogram. "Screening can catch cancer early, when it’s often most treatable, or in the case of colonoscopy, even prevent it by finding and removing precancerous growths before they develop into anything more," Dr. Hong says.
