’80s Rock Band Forced to Cancel 2026 Shows
Loverboy, the acclaimed Canadian arena rock band, announced disappointing news to fans.
The “Working for the Weekend” hitmakers, fronted by Mike Reno along with guitarist Paul Dean, Doug Johnson on keyboards, Matt Frenette on drums and Ken "Spider" Sinnaeve on bass, have been actively touring throughout the year but were forced to cancel a single show.
In an Instagram update shared by Illinois outdoor music venue Credit Union 1 Amphitheatre, Loverboy will “unfortunately be unable to perform” at the show on Aug. 15 “due to a health-related issue within the touring party.”
The unexpected announcement comes as Lynyrd Skynyrd and Foreigner are gearing up for the Double Trouble Double Vision Tour, a 23-date co-headlining tour across North America this summer.

Following the announcement, the '80s rock band will continue serving as the supporting act on three remaining dates of the Double Trouble Double Vision Tour on July 17 and 18 in Florida and on Sept. 24 in California.
Aside from the Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductees, fans will also get to see the classic rock tribute band Six Gun Sally as the opening act throughout the tour.
The latest announcement wasn't the first time Loverboy has canceled a show this year.
Back in May, an Instagram post announced that Loverboy had withdrawn from their June 20 show at The Legends Theater at Route 66 Casino Hotel in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
“We regret to announce that the Loverboy concert scheduled for Saturday, June 20 at 7:00 PM has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. All ticket holders will receive an automatic refund issued through their original point of purchase. Refunds are expected to be processed within approximately one week,” the post reads, adding, “We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding.”
Despite the cancellations, the following 2026 tour dates and venues remain on Loverboy's schedule:
July 17: West Palm Beach, FL at the iTHINK Financial Amphitheatre (with Lynyrd Skynyrd)
July 18: Tampa, FL at the MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Amphitheatre (with Lynyrd Skynyrd)
Sept. 24: Del Mar, CA at the Del Mar Fairgrounds / Arena (with Lynyrd Skynyrd)
Nov. 7: Rama, ON, Canada at the Casino Rama Resort (Headline Show)

This Thriller Was Just Named Netflix's Best Movie of the Year
So far, 2026 has been an incredible year for movies.

In a recent article from Us Weekly, the best Netflix movie of the year was named The Rip.
The film follows BenAffleck and MattDamon as Miami police detectives after they discover a hidden stash of millions of dollars.
The Rip hit the streamer on January 16 and was quick to climb the charts. It premiered with 41.6 million views in the first three days, one of the highest ever for the platform.
The film, which is based on a true story, was written and directed by JoeCarnahan.
He spoke to SlashFilmin January about how special it was to work with Affleck and Damon.
“The movie really trades on these two very, very distinct things, which is you've got two guys that have been friends since they were kids, which is one thing. And then you've got two guys that also became movie stars, which is like the double unicorn.”
Carnahan shared that he had an incredible time while The Rip was in production.
“I've never had a better time on set, or felt more supported. And when I say better times, it's like, listen, we try to have fun on every set and try to remind ourselves that we're lucky to be doing this, and let's just enjoy the process and so on,” he said. “It doesn't happen often enough. So it was great.”
’70s Rock Legend Is Suddenly Climbing the Charts 56 Years After No. 1 Hit
Neil Diamond is back on the Billboard 200 chart more than five decades after earning his first No. 1 hit.
The legendary singer-songwriter's All-Time Greatest Hits has re-entered the Billboard 200 at No. 171, marking another milestone for one of pop music's most enduring catalogs. The compilation album originally peaked at No. 15 and has now spent 56 weeks on the chart across its run.
The renewed chart success puts the spotlight back on "Cracklin' Rosie," the opening track on the collection and the song that became Neil Diamond's first No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in October 1970. The classic single helped establish Diamond as one of the defining hitmakers of the era and remains one of his signature recordings.
Released on July 8, 2014, All-Time Greatest Hits is a 23-track compilation spanning Diamond's most successful recordings from the 1960s through the early 1980s.

Released in 1970 on the album Tap Root Manuscript, "Cracklin' Rosie" became Neil Diamond's first No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. It was also his third single to sell one million copies in the U.S.
The song enjoyed international success as well, reaching No. 3 in the U.K., No. 1 in Canada, New Zealand, Norway, and South Africa, while also performing strongly across Australia and Europe.
Billboard ranked "Cracklin' Rosie" as the No. 17 song of 1970, further cementing its place among the year's biggest hits.
Diamond has recorded an extraordinary career that includes 10 No. 1 singles across the Billboard Hot 100 and Adult Contemporary charts, along with 38 Top 10 Adult Contemporary hits. Best-Selling Author's New AI Thriller Is Among Barnes & Noble's Biggest July Picks
Barnes & Noble has unveiled its biggest books for July 2026, and one of the month's most intriguing selections comes from bestselling horror author Paul Tremblay.
Tremblay's new novel "Dead but Dreaming of Electric Sheep" was included among the retailer's Best Books of July. The genre-bending story blends science fiction, horror and dark humor into a near-future thriller centered on artificial intelligence and corporate power.
Barnes & Noble describes the novel as "a hilarious and horrific blend of sci-fi and horror," following a young woman hired to escort a man whose mind has been overtaken by proprietary AI. Using a cell phone modeled after a video game controller, she must remotely guide his body across the country while he experiences a terrifying, ever-shifting nightmare inside his own mind.
Publisher HarperCollins calls the novel "Philip K. Dick meets the Coen Brothers," as the two unlikely allies become fugitives while uncovering the truth behind the technology that has trapped them.
Early reviews suggest Tremblay has once again delivered one of the year's standout horror novels.
"Paul Tremblay is on fire," author Ed Park wrote, calling the novel "emotionally wrenching and truly scary."

This Controversial Banned Armie Hammer Movie Scored 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, and It's Dividing Viewers
Armie Hammer just made his big-screen comeback. And the controversial film Citizen Vigilante has one of the highest Rotten Tomatoes audience scores so far this year. But the 94% rating isn’t sitting well with some viewers.
Hammer doesn’t need a movie to cause controversy. The once-lauded actor whose breakout role as the Winklevoss twins in The Social Network made him a sought-after star seemed to have a career on the fast track. But in January of 2021, sexual assault allegations and a series of dark BSDM messages with mentions of cannibalism put everything on hold. That is, until now.
While he’s spent the last few years out of the spotlight and off the screen, the actor recently made a comeback (of sorts), starring in German director Ube Boll’s Citizen Vigilante.
As the name implies, the film is about a citizen vigilante. But unlike the slew of action/thrillers that fall under the ‘vigilante justice’ category, this one was slammed for its polarizing far-right, xenophobic political message. Banned in Germany, criticism of Boll’s portrayal of immigrants as criminals set off a firestorm.
Not only were the politics panned, but the reviews were far from good (which makes the Rotten Tomatoes score a confusing, confounding mystery).
Variety called it “So indulgent and incurious a portrait of a man exacting vengeance that calling it wish-fulfillment feels irresponsible” and “A violent, incoherent, morally bankrupt slice of exploitation on the same qualitative level as House of the Dead,Alone in the Dark, and BloodRayne.”
The review continued, “In fact, the film is so astonishingly bad, it almost feels like the writer-director-producer is deliberately sabotaging his star Armie Hammer, whose intended comeback can only be harmed by this project.” Wow. Just wow.
So how could a film that gets this review also get a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes? Oh, and that’s not all. Citizen Vigilante is also the number-one paid VOD movie on Amazon Prime right now.
The flick didn’t start off with this amount of hype. After it was banned in Germany, Elon Musk stepped in. And that’s when it started gaining traction.
The richest person in the world posted a link to the movie on X last week. While the free streaming option lasted only 48 hours, it got millions of views — especially from the far right. X users even asked Musk, “Elon, please fund more right-wing artists like Uwe Boll,” and said, “Dear Elon thank you. Donald Trump needs to see the film.”
Over on Reddit, critics quickly solved the Rotten Tomatoes mystery, blaming Musk and posting, “The lord of the bots decided he wants to pimp this movie. We can presumably write the “audience” score off.”
Of course, the backlash didn't end there. Post after post and thread after thread on Reddit, X, and other social media sites are filled with both criticism and praise.
While it seems like fans are divided, one thing is clear—this probably wasn't the comeback Armie Hammer expected. The actor told The Hollywood Reporter (of getting the offer from Boll), “I’m pretty sure I cried.” he continued, “It was just this moment when I was like: I’m going to get to do the thing that I love more than anything, other than my children.”
1990 Song, Originally Written for Another Artist, Became a No. 1 Smash
Almost four decades ago, beloved music group New Kids on the Block released a track that would go on to be known as one of their most successful hits. However, the song was actually intended for another artist.
"Step by Step," the titular track of the album of the same name, was released on June 30, 1990, and it instantly became a huge commercial smash. It reached the top five on the charts across numerous countries, and was especially well received in North America and U.K. In the States it topped the Billboard Hot 100 for three consecutive weeks, and in Canada, the hit reached No. 1 on the Canadian Singles Chart. Across the pond, "Step by Step" peaked at No. 2 on the U.K. Singles Chart.
While it became New Kids on the Block's signature track, "Step by Step" was originally written and recorded in 1987 for Boston R&B group The Superiors. However, their version failed to take off and it was considered a dud by Motown Records.
Maurice Starr, the brains and producer behind New Kids on the Block, recycled the track from The Superiors, and the rest is history.
Lead vocals are sung by Jordan Knight, but all of the other members — Danny Wood, Donnie Wahlberg, Joey McIntyre, and Jonathan Knight — contributed to the unique vocal countdown which sees each member leas a specific "step."
Wahlbergrecalled the moment Jordan played the track for the group, and they knew they had a winner.
In an interview with Spotify, the musician explained, "He played it for us in the back of a limo and we all knew there and then it was a huge hit, and the rest is history."
On June 13, 2025, in celebration of the 35 years since its release, the group put out a special reissue, Step by Step (35th Anniversary).

'60s Rock Legend Announces 2026 Performance Amid Tour
Roger Daltrey is adding another major performance to his 2026 schedule.
The Who frontman has been announced for Best of Blues and Rock 2026, where he is set to perform on Nov. 21 at Parque Ibirapuera in São Paulo, Brazil. The festival will take place from Nov. 20 through Nov. 22 and will bring together several major names from rock, blues and related genres.
Daltrey's appearance was announced by The Who's official Instagram account, which described the lineup as "worth the wait" and noted that his performance will fall on the second day of the festival. The 2026 performance also follows The Who's recent farewell activity in North America, making Daltrey's solo dates especially meaningful for fans who still want to see him onstage. Best of Blues and Rock 2026 is scheduled for Nov. 20-22 at Parque Ibirapuera in São Paulo, with Daltrey set to take the stage on Nov. 21.

1955 Rock Classic That Started a Record-Breaking 220-Week Chart Run Was Actually a Cover
In the 1950s, Elvis Presley was virtually unmatched. But there was one artist giving the King of Rock and Roll a run for his chart-toppers, and that was Pat Boone.
A clean-cut mega-hitmaker from Nashville, Boone managed to compete with Presley on the pop charts in the mid-to-late 1950s, including a No. 1 run that helped define the era. Gaining early momentum in 1955, Boone's prolific chart history began with the success of the rock-and-roll classic “Ain’t That a Shame.”
Released in May 1955, “Ain’t That a Shame” was a massive crossover hit, becoming Boone’s first No. 1 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart and kick-starting what would become a famously maintained 220-consecutive-week runof Billboard chart presence. Polished and ready for mainstream radio right out of the studio, the track spent the summer climbing to the pinnacle spot, where it stayed for two weeks.
For the next seven years, Boone scored multiple chart-topping wins. But here’s the twist: It all began with a cover. “Ain’t That a Shame” was an original from another voice who helped shape mainstream rock and roll. Fats Domino, who Presley reportedly once referred to as the “real king of rock and roll,” was the first to record the classic that would later give Boone his breakthrough.
Fats Domino’s original track was released one month earlier in 1955 through ImperialRecords. Co-written with Dave Bartholomew, the track marked several firsts for the New Orleans native as well. His first major crossover hit, “Ain’t That a Shame” topped the R&B chart and reached No. 10 on the pop survey.
Though the two tracks are similar in lyrical construction, Fats Domino’s version was defined by its New Orleans R&B swing and warm Creole accents, a heavy contrast to Boone’s sanitized pop-crooner track.
“Fear of imitation was quite legitimate,” NPR wrote about the song, “as many R&B artists had their songs covered by white pop performers whose versions were often more palatable to the mainstream public.”
Despite the fear being realized with Boone’s poppy cover, Fats Domino’s original couldn’t be stopped. It not only topped the R&B charts, but also stayed there for nearly three months, making history as a dominant chart force.
“Fats recalls that the president of Imperial Records, Lew Chudd, told him, ‘Your record's goin' pop. You got a big record.’ Indeed,” NPR wrote.
In the end, "Ain' t That a Shame” didn’t just produce a hit; it launched two remarkable careers. Fats Domino proved rock and roll could cross over to the mainstream, while Boone rode the same melody to become one of the few artists capable of challenging Elvis at the top of the charts.
Proof that when something's good, it’s really good. No shame about it.

Her character has become a fan-favorite. Cranston pointed out what he noticed about her performance with PEOPLE.
"There [are] some subtleties that she is able to do that it took me years to be able to learn," the Oscar nominee said. "And she learned it in her mid-20s, and I thought, wow."
It made him think about his career path. "I truly think she is further along in her ability than I ever was at her age," he said. "I was still hustling and doing terrible 1980s TV shows when I was in my 30s."
Cranston was Douglas Donovan on Loving, which focused on a rich family in Pennsylvania. The soap opera aired from 1983 to 1995. He also made a short appearance on Crisis Counselor, CHiPs, Cover Up, Airwolf, and Hill Street Blues.

The cast is changing next season for the HBO show. The good news is that Dearden is returning next season.
Supriya Ganesh, who played Dr. Samira Mohan, won't be returning because she's switching her focus to elderly patients. It's a hard loss since she was part of the original cast.
Shabana Azeez played the young Victoria Javad since season 1. She was under pressure because her mother was a bigwig in the hospital. But the med student decided to focus on doing her psychiatry rotation and won't be in the emergency room next season.
Season 2 introduced Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi (Sepideh Moafi) to step into Dr. Michael 'Robby' Robinavitch's (Noah Wyle) role. He planned to take a break from the emergency room and ride on his motorcycle. But the finale revealed there is a darker reason behind his plan.
Dr. Al-Hashimi revealed to Robby that she suffers from seizures. He forced her to share her diagnosis in the finale, and, sadly, she wouldn't be able to keep her position. The new character won't return next season.
These exits mean there will be new residents next season. It'll also mean Mel will be a fourth-year resident, which makes her future exit more of a possibility.

Stephen King Says There's One Complaint About His Books He Can't Escape
Prolific horror author Stephen King is revealing the often-heard complaint he hears from fans of his work.
During a joint June 2026 interview on the horror and true crime podcast, The Last Podcast on the Left, alongside his son, author Joe Hill, King noted that he's killed off quite a few characters in his countless novels, short stories, and novellas. He said while his fans can handle the demise of most humans, they draw the line at a passing of a dog.
"But, you know, the thing is when children die, or adults die in books, that's one thing. Don't let a dog die," said the Cujo author during the interview.
According to King, fans were particularly unhappy with a scene involving a dog in his 1979 novel, The Dead Zone.
"I've never heard the end of it," said King while recording the podcast episode.
When asked if he laughs when writing a character's death, King replied, "How twisted do you think I am?" He also refrained to answer if he plans out certain characters' deaths when writing his books. Instead, King asked his son to answer the question.
"I mean, sometimes I know I'm working towards a big scene. Sometimes I have like a set piece in my mind, and so I'm working towards that," replied Hill, who has written popular horror books like Horns and Heart-Shaped Box.
Hill clarified that he was taken aback about the deaths of one of his characters in his dark fantasy book, King Sorrow, published in 2025.
"A few characters died in the last one, King Sorrow. And when one of them died, it took me by surprise. I didn't realize that was going to happen, and I felt a little bit shaken up by it," said Hill during the podcast interview.
He said, however, that his 22-year-old son immediately guessed which King Sorrow "character was going to be the first one to die." According to his son, he made the death obvious in earlier parts of the book.
"And I thought, 'I did?' Because I had no clue," said Hill.
'80s Heavy Metal Band Performs Banned Song Amid World Tour
Metallica turned a local controversy into a stadium singalong during the band's latest stop on its M72 World Tour.
The heavy metal band performed at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, on June 28, with guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo covering Tom Jones' "Delilah" during the show. The moment stood out because the song has been banned from Welsh rugby events at the same venue in recent years.
Hammett and Trujillo performed the song as part of their regular "doodle" segment, a part of the concert in which the two musicians play a song connected to the city or region they are visiting. In Cardiff, that meant turning to one of Wales' most recognizable performers.
"Delilah," released by Jones in 1968, has long had a complicated place in Welsh culture. The song was once treated like an unofficial rugby anthem and was often sung by crowds at matches. However, its lyrics, which describe a man killing a woman after finding her with another man, drew notable criticism.
Principality Stadium removed the song from its halftime playlist in 2015, and choirs were later barred from performing it before Wales rugby matches in 2023. At the time, officials said they were aware that the song was "problematic and upsetting" to some fans due to its lyrics.
Jones publicly pushed back against the decision during a 2023 concert in Cardiff, telling the crowd, "You can't stop us singing 'Delilah.'" He also added that while officials could stop a choir from performing the song, they could not stop the crowd from singing it. The moment seemed to echo those comments, as the musicians led the crowd through the song while fans sang most of the lyrics.
Metallica's Cardiff performance came as the band continues its massive M72 World Tour, which has supported its 2023 album, 72 Seasons. The Cardiff show also included major tracks such as "Creeping Death," "Fuel," "Nothing Else Matters," "Master of Puppets" and "Enter Sandman."
Metallica formed in Los Angeles in 1981, with James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich becoming the core of a band that helped define thrash metal in the decade that followed. The current lineup features Hetfield, Ulrich, Hammett and Trujillo, who joined the band in 2003.
For a group built on heavy riffs, massive tours and decades of live spectacle, this moment at Cardiff offered something different. Rather than simply playing another expected hit, Metallica leaned into the city's musical history and revived a song that still carries debate inside the very stadium where they performed it.

Beloved Rock Band Performs Fan-Favorite Song for the First Time in 18 Years
Queens of the Stone Age surprised the audience with this fan-favorite.
On Monday night, the rock band played their first show opening for System Of A Down at the Strawberry Arena in Sweden. To get things started, Queens of the Stone Age (QOTSA) played a song they haven't performed since 2008.
After playing a recording of "Afternoon Delight" by the Starland Vocal Band, which frontman Josh Homme is known to play over the venue speakers during their pre-show, QOTSA kicked off their set with their song, "Run, Pig, Run" from their 2007 album, Era Vulgaris. According to Stereogum, it was the first time in 18 years since they performed that song live.
Though "Run, Pig, Run" is not considered QOTSA's mainstream radio hits and is considered one of the lesser-streamed tracks from Era Vulgaris, it is highly praised by dedicated fans and critics as a uniquely dark and "psychotic" standout.
The song, which serves as the final track of Era Vulgaris, is a grim metaphor for being hunted, and explores the themes of paranoia, betrayal and the inevitability of facing consequences. The title and chorus frame the narrative in a predator-and-prey scenario, where the speaker is warning or taunting someone running for their life, echoing the idea that there is "no safe place to hide."
The music matches the dark themes with unhinged and loud guitar riffs, making use of a dramatic and evil-sounding chord progression. A standout feature of the track is the jarring, wonky mid-song synth bridge, which gives the song a frantic and fever-dream atmosphere. "Run, Pig, Run" is also known for an iconic drum sequence, which is usually only played live.

Though a popular rock band now, Homme is aware that their music isn't a "very easy first-listen band," and he has been told many times that it has taken some of his fans up to nine listens before becoming hooked.
"Because we're building off of all these other records, I like to write songs that are cousins of other songs. But it means that, even when our songs are simple, they're somehow a little bit complicated," Homme told Ultimate Guitar in an interview. "I have people all the time telling me, 'Until the ninth listen, I didn't get it.' And I [say], 'But you went back nine times.' Thank God you're doing that."

Since their formation 30 years ago, QOTSA has released a total of eight studio albums, with their most recent being In Times New Roman… in 2023.

QOTSA will be on tour throughout the summer, opening for various bands. Throughout July, the rock band will be on the road with System Of A Down around Europe, alongside Acid Bath. Then, starting Aug. 4, the group will be supporting the Foo Fighters on their stadium tour around North America, up until late September. In addition, QOTSA will be performing at Aftershock in Sacramento on Oct. 4, then in Iceland on Oct 24 with the Virgin Orchestra.

1981 The Rolling Stones Stadium Anthem Originally Started Life as a Reggae Track
'Start Me Up' by The Rolling Stones actually started life as a 1975 reggae track called 'Never Stop'.
The iconic British rock band originally recorded the song in a very different style but ultimately shelved it. When, in the 1980s, they needed material for their Tattoo You album, they rediscovered the forgotten rock-and-roll outtake of the song among the reggae takes.
“It was one of those things we cut a lot of times; one of those cuts that you can play forever and ever in the studio,” Richards said in a 1983 interview, per the American Songwriter.
He added about the making of the hit 1981 song, which was originally part of the Some Girls sessions, “Twenty minutes go by, and you’re still locked into those two chords. … Sometimes you become conscious of the fact that ‘Oh, it’s 'Brown Sugar' again,’ so you begin to explore other rhythmic possibilities. It’s basically trial and error. As I said, that one was pretty locked into a reggae rhythm for quite a few weeks. We were cutting it for Emotional Rescue, but it was nowhere near coming through, and we put it aside and almost forgot about it.”
In 2003, Keith Richards expanded on how they transformed 'Start Me Up' from a reggae song into the rock track we all know and love now. “I was convinced—and I think Mick was—that it was definitely a reggae song. And we did it in 38 takes," he said, per Far Out Magazine.
"And somewhere in the middle of a break, just to break the tension, [drummer] Charlie [Watts] and I hit the rock and roll version. And right after that, we went straight back to reggae. And we forgot totally about this one little burst in the middle until about five years later when somebody sifted all the way through these reggae takes," he explained.
When they discovered the song, no one remembered making it in the first place. "But we leaped on it again. We did a few overdubs on it, and it was like a gift, you know? One of the great luxuries of the Stones is we have an enormous, great big can of stuff. I mean, what anybody hears is just the tip of an iceberg, you know. And down there is vaults of stuff. But you have to have the patience and the time to actually sift through it.”
Mick Jagger decided to add his trademark steamy lyrics, but according to producer Richard Buskin, Richards was unhappy. "After they cut it, I said, ‘That’s bloody great! Come and listen.’ However, when I played it back Keith said, ‘Nah, it sounds like something I’ve heard on the radio. Wipe it’.”
The record producer added some context to Richards' dislike of the song: “Of course, I didn’t, but he really did not like it, and I’m not sure whether he likes it to this day. I don’t think it’s one of his favorite songs, although it’s obviously everyone’s favourite guitar riff; his guitar riff. Maybe because Keith loves reggae so much, he wanted it to be a reggae song, but that wasn’t to be.”
The song in its final form is one of the band's biggest songs. It often opens their tour and is a favorite in sports venues. 'Start Me Up' entered at number 1 on the US Billboard Mainstream Rock chart and at number 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
1977 Hit That Sounds Even Better During a Heat Wave Became a Timeless Anthem
It’s summertime. Which, these days, apparently means wild snowstorms on one side of the country and record-breaking heat on the other. No matter the forecast, Foreigner’s 1977 hit “Cold as Ice” is the perfect rock song for keeping it cool.
Released in July 1977 as the second single from the British-American rock band’s self-titled debut album, the track was another Top 10 hit, following their first, “Feels Like the First Time,” which climbed to No. 4. Peaking at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, “Cold as Ice” helped propel its parent album to No. 4 on the Billboard 200.
“I must admit though that I was surprised when it went into the Top 10 in America,” guitarist Mick Jones, who wrote the song with fellow founding member and lead singer Lou Gramm, recalled to Classic Rock magazine. “But then we were a new band, and everything was exciting and surprising at the time. I guess radio was ready to see what we had next.”
Described as a “bad-girl critique,” the song is about a heartless lover who prioritizes material things over love and will eventually “pay the price.” According to Jones, the coldhearted character he had in mind wasn’t based on anyone in real life, but rather “the sort of woman Joan Crawford would play in a film.”
But clever lyrics can take a song only so far. It was also the music that turned “Cold as Ice” into a rock radio staple. The track’s pop-rock sensibilities, driving piano riff, simmering tension, and explosive chorus all made for the perfect storm of ’70s rock.
“It’s a strange, quirky little song, basically a pop song written back to front,” Jones said. “I knew it was the poppiest song we’d done, which I was a little worried about, but everybody seemed to dig it.”
Nearly 50 years later, it’s clear fans never stopped digging it.
Far from becoming frozen in time, “Cold as Ice” has continued to work its way into the zeitgeist, finding new generations of listeners through television series including Arrested Development and Stranger Things, films like Everybody Wants Some!!, and even the hip-hop genre, with rap duo M.O.P. sampling the track for their 2000 song of the same name.
“I don’t think we’ve ever played a Foreigner show without playing 'Cold as Ice,'" Jones said, reflecting on the track's endurance. "It’s a big one for the fans. … I guess it’s part of our identity now.”
