2004 Soft-Rock Piano Anthem Ranked a ‘Most Underrated Chorus of the 21st Century’ According to Billboard
Following the success of her breakout hit debut album, American musician Vanessa Carlton began working on her second studio album, Harmonium. The lead single from the album was the soft-rock piano anthem, "White Houses." A soaring, bright, orchestral song, the chorus from "White Houses" was ranked by Billboard as one of the most "underrated" of the 21st century. Of the ballad the magazine wrote:
"While every inch of the song 'White Houses' is impeccably crafted, the amorphous chorus impresses most of all. The chorus pans out, as most good choruses do, and examines the larger meaning of her journey through jealousy, lust and becoming an adult."
Carlton described the song as being about "rites of passage." She went further saying:
"It's about jealousy, it's about losing your virginity, it's about living on your own. It's a story that most people can relate to. It's really the journey of one girl and her perception of her environment and how she starts out as a wide-eyed person, but everyone gets hardened by life, but not necessarily to the point where you can't feel anymore."
Guitarist and singer Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac contributed the acoustic guitar heard in the song.
Billboard critic Jonathon Newan sung further praises of "White Houses" stating:
"[The song is] beautifully humble and amazingly crafted. The in-depth lyrics which almost any nomad can relate to on a person level gives it an extraordinary inner-meaning, and the spectacular background arrangement is something that most pop songs lack. It's profound. It should be Carlton's next hit."
During the world premiere of the song and its music video in 2004, some radio stations, MTV, and VH1 all chose to censor specific lyrics of the song. Carlton called the situation "frustrating" and attributed the controversy with Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake at the Superbowl previously that year to media's sensitivity around censorship.
"White Houses" peaked at 86 on the Billboard Hot 100, but did manage to break into the Top 40 Billboard's Top 40 Mainstream and Adult Top 40 charts. The single would be the last time Carlton would appear on the Hot 100 to date.

'70s Rock Band Announces Update on 2026 Tour
Cheap Trick fans have three more opportunities to catch the legendary rock band on stage this fall.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers have announced three new dates as special guests on ZZ Top's ongoing 2026 tour. The newly added performances will take place Sept. 26 in Nashville, Tennessee, followed by Oct. 3 in The Woodlands, Texas, and Oct. 4 in Irving, Texas.
"Three new dates with ZZ Top just announced!" the band shared on Instagram. "Presale begins 10am Wednesday with code CTLIVE – general on ale Friday."
The additions come as both bands continue expanding their touring schedules amid strong demand. Cheap Trick is currently supporting its 2025 album All Washed Up, while ZZ Top has also extended its own touring plans throughout 2026.
The new dates also continue a busy comeback on the road for Cheap Trick after the band was forced to postpone seven headlining shows in June. Those concerts had originally been scheduled following a string of performances with Styx, and the group has since begun rescheduling the affected dates while adding new appearances to its calendar.
View this post on InstagramFormed in Rockford, Illinois, in 1973, Cheap Trick has spent more than five decades building one of classic rock's most enduring catalogs. Breakthrough albums such as In Color and Heaven Tonight, along with timeless hits including "I Want You to Want Me," "Surrender," "Dream Police" and "The Flame," helped establish the quartet as one of rock's defining live acts. The band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2016 and continues to tour extensively.
"I think we just do what we do and we don't try to be somebody else," guitarist Rick Nielsen told Louder Than War. "When you try to be somebody else or try to be something or try to figure out what’s going on in the world….we just do what we do. I tell people, I don’t think we've ever progressed."
The band's partnership with ZZ Top brings together two of rock's most recognizable groups. Throughout 2026, ZZ Top has also shared the stage with artists including George Thorogood and Dwight Yoakam, while Cheap Trick has performed alongside Styx and welcomed support from acts including the Pat Travers Band, James Hatem and the Calling.
With new dates now on the schedule and additional shows continuing to be added, Cheap Trick's 2026 tour remains one of the band's busiest in years. And, while the band has no plans of slowing down any time soon, touring continues to present its own set of challenges after so many years in the industry.
"Keeping it fresh can be hard, because some of the guys in the band have an idea that you've got to play the hits and do what the crowd wants to hear," frontman Robin Zander told Louder. "And I've always been the opposite of that. I've always thought: 'Let’s turn them on to some Cheap Trick music that they don't know we do, and see what happens.' But we work it out. Every night we try to work out a different setlist."
More than 50 years after first forming, the veteran rockers continue proving that their reputation as one of rock’s premier live bands is as strong as ever.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's Reported Wedding Plans Include Two Major Celebrations
New details are emerging about what could be one of the most closely watched celebrity weddings in recent memory. Swiftie have been piecing together details like who's going to perform, where it's going to be, and when.
After days of speculation surrounding Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's reported wedding plans, CBS News reports that the couple is expected to host two major celebrations at Madison Square Garden over the Fourth of July weekend, including a rehearsal dinner and a late-night reception.
Neither Swift nor Kelce has publicly confirmed the plans, but multiple law enforcement sources familiar with the security preparations have shared new details about the reported festivities.
Reports Reveal Rehearsal Dinner and Late-Night CelebrationAccording to CBS News, Swift and Kelce are expected to kick off the weekend with a rehearsal dinner Thursday evening at the Infosys Theater inside Madison Square Garden. The gathering is reportedly expected to host around 100 guests.
A second, much larger celebration is then expected to take place Friday night, with sources telling CBS News the event could accommodate roughly 1,000 attendees and continue into the early hours of Saturday morning.
The latest report follows earlier revelations that event organizers secured a street activity permit for the area surrounding Madison Square Garden from July 2 through July 4, fueling weeks of speculation that the iconic venue would play a central role in the festivities.

Security Expected to Be ExtensiveGiven Swift's global popularity and the enormous public interest surrounding the wedding, security planning has reportedly become a major undertaking.
CBS News reports that private security will handle protection inside the venue, while the New York Police Department is expected to manage crowds, media and fans gathered outside.
Retired NYPD Assistant Chief John Hart told the outlet that Madison Square Garden's enclosed layout should help organizers keep guests safe, though he expects the surrounding area to be packed with photographers and fans hoping to catch a glimpse of the celebration.
"Paparazzi chasing cars with guests and swarming hotels will be a side issue that will fall to NYPD as well," Hart told CBS News.
The reported celebrations come after months of intense speculation surrounding Swift and Kelce's engagement and wedding plans. Earlier reports suggested the couple had reserved Madison Square Garden for a private event, though neither has publicly commented on the ongoing rumors.
If the reported schedule proves accurate, the holiday weekend celebration is expected to become one of the biggest celebrity events of the year, with hundreds of guests, heightened security and countless fans watching from outside the iconic New York venue.

Nina Dobrev Reveals the 1 Kind of Love Scene She Doesn't Recommend
Nina Dobrev is sharing why she doesn't recommend filming love scenes with actors she's close friends with.
During a June 30 appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark, Dobrev looked back on filming a romantic scene with Aaron Paul in The Get Out, admitting their longtime friendship made the kiss anything but romantic.
"It was like making out with my brother. Don't recommend it," she joked, explaining that the awkwardness had nothing to do with Paul's performance and everything to do with their platonic relationship.
"Although Aaron… not to… he was great," Dobrev quickly clarified. "That's not… you get it!"
She went on to explain that the pair have been friends for well over a decade.
"Aaron and I have known each other—him and his wife and I met, I think, in 2011," Dobrev said. "So we've been friends for a while."
In The Get Out, Russell Crowe stars as a nightclub owner hoping to leave his dangerous past behind and retire with his girlfriend. When masked gunmen—played by Dobrev and Paul—rob him and ruthless cartels close in, a mysterious buyer emerges, forcing him into a deadly fight for survival.
View this post on InstagramDobrev described making the film as a "super fun... action thriller comedy."
She's also reuniting with another longtime friend, her The Vampire Diaries co-star Paul Wesley, for the upcoming series You Deserve to Know.
"I've been waiting to share this one," Dobrev wrote on social media while tagging Wesley. "Paul Wesley and I are reuniting to executive produce and star in You Deserve to Know. We fell in love with this novel, and getting to help shape its adaptation from both sides of the camera has been incredibly exciting."
Based on the 2025 novel of the same name, the series follows three close-knit suburban moms whose seemingly perfect lives unravel after Gwen's (Dobrev) husband, Scott (Wesley), is found murdered following a Friday night dinner. As the investigation unfolds, long-buried secrets, betrayals, affairs, and jealousies come to light, forcing the women to question both their husbands and the true nature of their friendship.

‘Fast & Furious’ Star Jordana Brewster Reveals Why She Underwent Awake Brain Surgery
Fast & Furious franchise star Jordana Brewster is opening up about her experience undergoing awake brain surgery.
Brewster, 46, skyrocketed to fame as Mia Toretto in the popular racing franchise, which started in 2001 with The Fast and the Furious alongside Michelle Rodriguez, Vin Diesel, and Paul Walker. However, the star had a serious health condition brewing. At age 28, she was diagnosed with cavernous malformation (CVM), an abnormal cluster of thin, fragile blood vessels located in the language area of her brain. While the condition can cause seizures and potentially life-threatening bleeding, it can be controlled by medication, diet, and sometimes surgery. Eventually, Brewster chose to take the surgical route and underwent an awake craniotomy in 2020 after two “breakthrough” seizures.
“They shaved this part, and then they opened my skull. I was on my side, and there was someone in front of me showing me cards and sort of testing my language and two brilliant neurosurgeons behind me,” Brewster shared on the June 30 episode of the “She MD” podcast. “If I couldn’t come up with a word association or if I couldn’t answer a question they knew, ‘Oh, OK, we’ve hit a part of the brain we shouldn’t hit and let’s stay away from there.’”
Brewster went on to say that the surgery was successful.
"Thank God. They got it out,” she said, US Weekly noted. “I’ve been seizure-free, symptom-free for six years now and I’m so grateful.”
Check out Brewster's interview on the podcast below:
Making the Decision to Change Her LifeWhile Brewster had been dealing with the condition for years, she found the strength to deal with it head-on after she split from her husband of 13 years, Andrew Form. Now happier than ever, she's married to Mason Morfit.
“I think that helped also to give me the bravery to do something about the CVM,” she continued. “I got a divorce, I found the love of my life. It was like Eat, Pray, Love on steroids. … With brain surgery.”
Brewster noted that she finally decided to undergo the surgery because she "just wanted this out so that I wouldn’t be burdened by it anymore."
"It was this constant cloud where I was like, ‘Oh, my God, what if. I’m a control freak too. To lose control and to convulse in front of people or to lose control if you’re with your kid... that was always a constant fear. I’m so relieved that I’m able to talk about it now, hopefully help others and get it off my chest," she concluded.

What Your Zodiac Symbol (Glyph) Means, According to Expert Astrologers
Each zodiac sign is assigned a unique symbol, known as a glyph. For instance, while Libra is represented by the scales of justice, Aries is symbolized by the horns of a ram. These 12 simple designs carry centuries of astrological history and are believed to reflect each sign's core traits, mythology, and symbolism. Naturally, many people are curious about what their zodiac glyph means and how it relates to their personality.
To better understand the history and symbolism behind the zodiac glyphs, Parade Astrology spoke with Cristina Farella, a practicing astrologer and author of Divination for Dummies. Farella holds an MA in Western Intellectual Traditions from the CUNY Graduate Center.
The Glyphs for Each Zodiac SignAries ♈︎

Cancer ♋︎
Leo ♌︎
Virgo ♍︎
Libra ♎︎
Scorpio ♏︎
Sagittarius ♐︎
Capricorn ♑︎
Aquarius ♒︎
Pisces ♓︎
The zodiac glyphs are shorthand symbols to label each sign. Each symbol carries distinct meanings, adding an extra layer to our understanding of the deeper significance of each zodiac archetype. Cristina Farella, author of Divination for Dummies, shares the historical context: "The glyphs originated in late Classical Greek horoscope papyri, were continuously preserved in medieval Byzantine manuscripts, and were later stylized into the standardized forms we recognize today during the Renaissance."
The founder of Eighth House Astrology further explains, "Zodiacal glyphs are the visual symbols that represent the twelve signs of the zodiac." When studying astrology, we often start by memorizing the names and meanings of these signs. However, learning the glyphs elevates our understanding of the cosmos. "You can think of the glyphs as part of the alphabet of the language of astrology."

Glyphs for Each Zodiac Sign and Their MeaningsIf you're interested in the symbols or glyphs related to your zodiac sign and their meanings, you've come to the right place. Cristina Farella shares her expert insights on astrological interpretations and mythology, providing us with a deeper understanding of each star sign. Below, we delve into her interpretations of the symbolism associated with each sign.
Aries is the first zodiac sign, and its glyph represents the Ram.Photo by sarayut Thaneerat on Getty Images
AriesAries is the ram, and its symbol is literally meant to represent the muzzle and curved horns of the animal. It’s one of the most literal representations of a sign we have in the zodiac. Seen a little differently, though, the Aries glyph can also be the cornucopia, or the horn of plenty, a symbol of springtime abundance.
Taurus' glyph represents the bull.Photo by sarayut Thaneerat on Getty Images
TaurusThe glyph for Taurus, the bull, offers another pretty literal representation of its meaning. Farella points out that in Taurus's circle-and-horns, we can see the image of the face of the bull when we see Taurus’s symbol. Taking the pieces apart, we see the circle of spirit crowned by the crescent of potential, a symbol of feminine receptivity.
Gemini's glyph mirrors the Roman numeral for two.Photo by sarayut Thaneerat on Getty Images
GeminiGemini is represented by what looks like a Roman numeral “two,” and that’s because the sign Gemini is the sign of the twins. This reflects Gemini’s inherent talent for holding the tension of opposites, which supports the sign’s deep curiosity.
Cancer's glyph represents the pincers of the crab.Photo by sarayut Thaneerat on Getty Images
CancerCancer’s glyph looks like two spirals hovering over one another, representing the symmetric claws (or pincers) of a crab, creating an enclosed space. This is perfect for Cancer, symbolizing the depths of soulful interiority. The heart-space and how we protect it are represented by this sign.
EXPAND: When Does Your Zodiac Sign's Season Occur?
The lion is mirrored in Leo's glyph.Photo by sarayut Thaneerat on Getty Images
LeoLeo the golden lion’s symbol is comprised of a circle with a hook flowing off of it, which is said to represent the lion’s tail. Some also note the circle of spirit, adorned with an inverted chalice, representing the individual’s strength of inner vision–a major trait of Leo.
Virgo is known as the maiden.Photo by sarayut Thaneerat on Getty Images
VirgoVirgo is represented by a maiden holding a shaft of wheat, and its glyph resembles an "M" with an additional line that curves inward at the end. Some historians suggest that the symbol is derived from a stylized version of the first three letters of the Greek word "parthenos," which means "virgin." Others interpret it as a stylized maiden modestly crossing her legs. This gesture is powerful for the maiden, as she symbolizes the sovereignty of the inner feminine.
Libra is represented by the scales.Photo by sarayut Thaneerat on Getty Images
LibraDespite the star sign's reputation for lively warmth, Libra is the only zodiac sign represented by an inanimate object. Its glyph depicts a set of scales of justice, which peace-keeping Libra strives to keep in balance.
Scorpio is symbolized by the scorpion.Photo by sarayut Thaneerat on Getty Images
ScorpioThe symbol for Scorpio features the scorpion's upward-pointing tail, also likely referencing Mars, the traditional planetary ruler of Scorpio. As Farella explains, Scorpio's glyph echoes Virgo's, which is intriguing because, before the 1st century BCE, Virgo and Scorpio were positioned next to each other in the zodiacal order. However, the ancient Romans re-drew these constellations and inserted Libra between them.
Sagittarius is associated with a wise archer.Photo by sarayut Thaneerat on Getty Images
LEARN: What Is Astrocartography? This Astrology Tool Reveals Where You'll Thrive
SagittariusAccording to Farella, the Sagittarius glyph isn't just the centaur, but the arrow already in flight — a nod to the sign's drive for expansion and direct action. In mythology, the centaur's bow and arrow represent the ability to balance instinct (the horse) with wisdom and intellect (the human), themes that are distilled into the simple arrow glyph.
Capricorn is marked by the sea goat.Photo by sarayut Thaneerat on Getty Images
CapricornCapricorn's glyph is an unusual blend of two creatures: the strong horns of a goat and the curling tail of a fish. This symbol represents the sea-goat myth and embodies Capricorn's dual nature, as it excels both on solid ground and in navigating complex situations.
Aquarius is represented by the air element.Photo by sarayut Thaneerat on Getty Images
AquariusThe glyph for Aquarius features two zigzag lines, one positioned above the other. Some interpretations suggest that these lines symbolize wind disturbing the water's surface, as Aquarius is both an Air sign and is known as the water bearer, carrying a jar of water on its back. Others view the lines as representing the swift movement of air, which aligns with Aquarius's elemental association.
Pisces connects the material and non-physical realms in its glyph.Photo by sarayut Thaneerat on Getty Images
PiscesPisces is represented by two crescents connected by a horizontal line, with the crescents facing away from each other. This symbolizes the Pisces constellation, which depicts two fish tethered by a ribbon of stars. Each fish swims in different realms—one in the world of day and the other in the realm of dreams. The horizontal line between them, representing the star ribbon, illustrates the connection between the conscious and unconscious mind.

1992 Movie Soundtrack, Named One of the 50 Greatest Grunge Albums Ever, Defined a Generation
The best movie soundtracks don’t just capture a film’s mood and tone—they illuminate the story and the characters’ journeys through music. Occasionally, a soundtrack transcends the film itself, becoming a generation-defining album that transports listeners back in time while standing on its own as an unforgettable musical experience.
In 1992, at the height of the grunge movement, Cameron Crowe’s Singles captured the heart and soul of Seattle’s exploding music scene. Released on June 30, 1992, the film’s soundtrack has become one of the defining albums of the decade. More than three decades later, Rolling Stone still considers the Singles soundtrack one of the greatest grunge albums ever.

♬ Would? (2022 Remaster) - Alice In Chains How Singles Captured the Spirit of the Grunge EraSingles starred Bridget Fonda as an earnest, love-struck coffee shop waitress opposite former Brat Packer Matt Dillon, who played the effortlessly cool frontman of the fictional band Citizen Dick.
While the film perfectly captured the early 1990s—from flannel shirts and combat boots to long hair and Seattle coffee culture—it also featured appearances from real-life grunge icons, including Eddie Vedder, Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard, Chris Cornell, and members of Alice in Chains.
Yet it was the soundtrack that elevated Singles beyond a beloved romantic comedy. More than a companion to the film, the album became a defining snapshot of a musical movement, preserving the raw emotion, authenticity, and edge that made Seattle the center of the rock world.

Why the Singles Soundtrack Became a Grunge ClassicThe Singles soundtrack did far more than support the movie—it helped introduce grunge to a mainstream audience. One of the first blockbuster movie soundtracks of the 1990s, it crystallized the Seattle sound and showcased many of the artists who would define the decade.
Featuring songs from Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Mudhoney, The Smashing Pumpkins, and Screaming Trees, and Paul Westerberg's first solo effort since the breakup of the Replacements, the album captured the diversity of the city's music scene while helping cement those bands' places in rock history.
Rather than feeling like a collection of songs, the soundtrack plays like a greatest-hits introduction to the grunge movement, making it just as rewarding to hear from start to finish today as it was in 1992.

Fashion trends have come and gone, but the music's emotional honesty and raw power continue to resonate. Summer is one of the most popular times to visit Disneyland, but it can also be one of the busiest. Between soaring temperatures, packed walkways and long attraction lines, some guests have started looking for ways to enjoy the parks without spending hundreds and committing to a full day.
Now, Disneyland is giving visitors another option. The resort has introduced a limited-time ticket offer that makes it easier to experience the parks after the daytime rush, making it an appealing choice for anyone hoping to soak up the magic during cooler evening hours.
Experience Disneyland After Dark for Less This Summer View this post on InstagramKTLA reports that the new option, available beginning June 30, costs $59 for ages 3 and up and grants admission to one park for the evening. Tickets are for select nights from July 12 through August 5 and are valid Sundays through Wednesdays.
Guests can choose between Disneyland Park or Disney California Adventure Park, with admission beginning at 7 p.m. for Disneyland Park and 5 p.m. for Disney California Adventure.
The timing also lines up with the ongoing Disneyland Resort 70th Celebration, giving evening ticket holders the chance to experience anniversary entertainment, themed merchandise, limited-time treats and the festive atmosphere that continues throughout the summer.
For many visitors, evening is one of the best times to enjoy Disneyland. Temperatures tend to cool off, the parks take on a completely different look after sunset, and nighttime entertainment helps create an unforgettable atmosphere.

There's Plenty to See Once You're InsideThe evening ticket also arrives at an exciting time for Disneyland fans. The resort recently refreshed its iconic Pirates of the Caribbean attraction, giving returning guests another reason to stop by and experience one of the park's most beloved rides.
Of course, attractions aren't the only draw. Disneyland continues to introduce seasonal snacks and fan-favorite menu items throughout the summer, making it a great opportunity to sample some of the resort's best food while strolling through the parks after dark.
Because the promotion is only available for a limited time and reservation availability is separate from standard park admission, guests planning to take advantage of the offer may want to book sooner rather than later.
Disneyland's new evening ticket is one of the season's best values. Whether you're hoping to catch nighttime entertainment, ride classic attractions or enjoy a summer evening surrounded by Disney magic, this limited-time offer makes it affordable to plan a Disney visit.

This Classic 'Adult Fairytale' With Longest-Ever Cannes Ovation Returns to Theaters
Guillermo del Toro's latest masterpiece Frankenstein was showered in Academy Award nominations and even walked away with a few trophies earlier this year.
The renowned filmmaker, 61, also won three Oscars for Pan's Labyrinth, which is now celebrating its 20th anniversary in the most cinematic of ways.
Cineverse is partnering to re-release del Toro's master creation in theaters nationwide on October 9 in 4K and with versions available in both 3D and HDR by Barco — the dedicated HDR viewing solution offering up to 6 times higher peak luminance. Each version for the re-release has been overseen by The Shape of Water director himself.
Check out the all-new trailer for the epic re-release below.
As film buffs might recall, the film's original claim to fame was its Cannes Film Festival premiere, which received a 22-minute standing ovation — the longest in festival history. Twenty years later, after all the other award-winning films del Toro has made since, fans still argue Pan's Labyrinth is his best of all time.
The story takes place in 1944, in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War. Young Ofelia and her pregnant mother have been brought to live in the countryside, where her brutal stepfather Captain Vidal's job is to wipe out the remaining rebels camped in the local forest. Nearby, in a hidden labyrinth, Ofelia meets an ageless Faun, who tells her that she is really a princess from an enchanted world. He gives her three tasks which she must complete in order to reclaim her rightful place. As her mother's failing health threatens the life of her unborn child, Ofelia undertakes a quest to complete the Faun's tasks.
Tickets for Guillermo del Toro’s Pan Labyrinth 20th Anniversary will be available online on September 9 and at participating theater box offices (theater locations are subject to change). People In These 5 States Are Most Likely to Catch Food Poisoning This Fourth of July Weekend
The Fourth of July is expected to be a busy travel weekend this year, despite gas prices. The TSA anticipates over 18 million travelers at U.S. airports, and AAA estimatesover 61 million will road trip to their destinations. The long weekend is often a favorite for getaways, and with the country’s 250th anniversary this year, many will be headed to celebrations in patriotic destinations like Philadelphia or fireworks show favorites like Six Flags Fiesta Texas. Others will be trying to beat the heat with a coolcation or a visit to fan-favorite ice cream parlors.
Wherever your summer vacation is taking you this weekend, it’s that time of year when locals and travelers alike should be most mindful of the risk of foodborne illnesses. While food poisoning can happen any time of year, cases are more prevalent in the summer months when temperatures push food into the danger zone faster, and people are more likely to store and dine on food outdoors at picnics, barbecues, and cookouts.

The Top 5 States for Foodborne IllnessThe Global Casino Association™ recently compiled data on the states where you’re most likely to risk a foodborne illness, aggregated from the CDC's National Outbreak Reporting System (NORS), alongside public food safety reports and consumer complaints. They found the top five states for food poisoning are Oregon, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Colorado, and Nevada.
The safest states for foodborne illnesses are Alaska, Indiana, Utah, Missouri, and Ohio. That might feel surprising given how much some of the safest states love a mayonnaise-based salad. But many variables can affect how a state scores on this particular potential nausea index.
Related: Kylie Kelce Finally Has a Solid Reason To Convince Jason They Need a Cat
Why Is Food Poisoning More Common in Some States than Others? For one, states can vary widely in climate. Places where it’s more comfortable to host outside in the summer heat might see more incidents of, say, macaroni salad going bad after a couple of hours at 70-80 degrees. Cities where your Fourth of July bash is more likely to be held in air-conditioned spaces or with access to coolers and refrigerators might have fewer deviled-egg-related incidents.
For another, we eat very different dishes in different parts of the country. Coastal states like Oregon and Delaware are more likely to have seafood on the menu, like raw oysters and clams, which were just recalled in several states by the FDA for potential norovirus contamination. Some communities, such as the Amish in Pennsylvania, are more likely to drink raw milk and other unpasteurized dairy products, which can harbor harmful bacteria.
On the other hand, different communities report foodborne illness incidents at higher rates or have different state food safety standards, factors that can affect the available data. Groups like the Amish may be less likely to self-report instances of foodborne and other illnesses, for instance. Conversely, the FDA has mutual reliance partnerships and other agreements with state oversight agencies in Alaska, California, Florida, Hawaii, Iowa, Minnesota, New York, Rhode Island, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin, which increases the use of laboratory results and standardized reporting.
Also at play is the degree of confidence Americans have in the safety of their food system, which has declined over the last twenty years, as has overall trust in federal institutions related to public health. As the saying goes, however, knowledge is power. Some of the riskiest foods to eat, according to data compiled by Consumer Reports, include deli meat, cucumbers, unpasteurized dairy products, soft cheeses, eggs, onions, leafy greens, organic carrots, organic basil, pre-cooked and prepared meats (particularly poultry), and sprouts.
Essentially, watch the crudités platter, dips, queso fresco, brie, party subs, and fruit plates this summer in addition to the potato salad and ambrosia. Keep chilled foods under 40°F by storing them on ice or in separate coolers from drinks, and keep those coolers shut as much as possible. According to the FDA, food is safest if it sits at room temperature for 2 hours or less when temperatures are below 90°F, or for 1 hour when temperatures are above 90°F.
Be sure to wash produce, heat deli meats if possible, and set up an outdoor hand-wash station for food prep and dining. Thaw and marinate meat in the refrigerator, rather than on the counter, and dispose of any marinades or glazes that have come into contact with raw meat or meat juices. Keep cooked and grilled food above 140°F.
Keep a particular eye on older people over 65, children under 5, pregnant people, and anyone with a weakened immune system. The CDC advises that these groups are more likely to contract a foodborne illness from contaminated ingredients or prepared dishes, or to experience adverse consequences if they are exposed to Listeria, Salmonella, Norovirus, E. coli, Campylobacter, or other pathogens.
Food poisoning is pretty common, with 1 in 6 contracting a foodborne illness every year. That’s about 48 million people annually. That said, don’t let those odds get you down. There are plenty of ways to enjoy summer treats safely, whether you’re grilling in the backyard or traveling to an exciting new destination this Fourth of July weekend.
'Cape Fear': 4 Songs That Inspired Javier Bardem
We have a new Max Cady, 35 years after Robert De Niro starred in Cape Fear. The story is being retold through a series, and Javier Bardem is playing the unsettling sociopath.
Music is a good way to get inspired or change the mood. The Cape Fear cast talked about how they used it to play their distressed characters.
Slipknot and Linkin Park Inspired Max Cady in 2026's 'Cape Fear'The Apple TV series strived to make a new take on adapting The Executioners by John D. MacDonald. Cady gets out of prison after 17 years for a murder he didn't commit. Bardem's Cady has tattoos, scars on his head, and blue eyes. Bardem wore contacts to cover his natural brown eyes.
"He has a very horrible wound in his head, and that should be reflected in some way, somehow — in his eyes, maybe," the actor told Radio Times. "So, yeah, those are the fun elements to play with. It's like a toy that you play with, and then one day it all comes together."
Metal music inspired the look. "I listened to five songs especially," Bardem told Kerrang! "Two from Linkin Park: 'Given Up,' with the great Chester [Bennington], and 'Up From The Bottom' from the last album, From Zero."
The actor praised the band's new lead singer. "I think [Emily Armstrong] is an amazing singer," he continued. "She really brought it back. Those two songs really express frustration and the fight for raising up from [one ’s] own ashes that [resonates] with Max."
The star moved on to the next band that was part of his process. "And songs by Slipknot, 'Falling In Reverse' and 'Bad Omens,'" Bardem said. "I’m so bad with the names of songs, but they were in my head all day long before doing anything and helped put me in the mood."

Amy Adams Sang While Making 'Cape Fear'Amy Adams plays Anna Bowden, who was Cady's lawyer. He doesn't waste any time to find her. Lily Collias plays her daughter in the series. Collias, 21, had a special request of the 51-year-old Oscar nominee.
"I mean, she really felt like a mother figure throughout the production," she told PEOPLE. "And she was such a powerhouse that led with her heart. And she was just like really magical to be around, always."
Collias wasn't scared to tell the actress that she was a fan of her fairy tale movie. "And I would always be like, ‘Amy, can you sing a little Enchanted song, please?’" she said. Of course, Adams still performed the songs well. "Her voice is perfect, always in the right tone and everything," Collias added.
Juliette Lewis played the young actress's role in the Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg film. Lewis, 53, returned for the Apple TV adaptation as Crystal. Scorsese and Spielberg are also the producers of the series.

Chloë Sevigny Reveals The Funny Reason Her Role In 'Five Star Weekend' Is 'A Gift' To Her Mom
Chloë Sevigny's latest project is going to be mom-approved.
Chatting on the Today show on Tuesday, the actress got to talking about why she was initially hesitant to take on her latest role in Peacock's Five Star Weekend, and how her mom influenced her decision to star in the show.
"I was like, 'I don't know if my audience will really like this, if my fans will really get this,'" she said, confirming that she thought the role was a bit too mainstream for her. "But I was like, 'You know what, my mom will finally be able to walk through the grocery store and not have an awkward conversation about something that I'm on. So it was my gift to my mother."
"All of her friends are gonna love it, and everybody in the grocery store is gong to run up like, 'Oh isn't it the best show ever?'" she said.

Five Star Weekend is the TV adaptation of the book by Elin Hilderbrand. The series also starsJennifer Garner, Gemma Chan and Regina Hall.
Premiering on the streaming platform in July, the show follows Garner's character who loses her husband and arranges for friends throughout her life — who haven't met and have their own individual stories — to spend a weekend with her.
A departure from her earlier roles, including her breakout role in Kids in 1995, and her Oscar-nominated performance in Boys Don't Cry in 1999, the tamer tone of Five Star Weekend is most definitely a change for the actress' provocative and independent film roles she's become known for.
Sevigny is also executive producing a documentary on the Grateful Dead, called Summer Tour, also out in July. The self-proclaimed "Dead Head" told Today that "all Dead Heads will love it and fans of music and people that are into alternative cultures [will too]."
Another one of Hildebrand's books, The Perfect Couple, was also adapted to the TV screen in a show starring Nicole Kidman and Liev Schreiber in 2024.

Durability is another selling point. The pool is constructed with extra-thick PVC that's twice as thick as standard PVC. "My kids have played hard with this thing and it's holding up great," one reviewer wrote. Plus, it's made from BPA-free materials, making it a family-friendly choice.
The pool inflates in about three to four minutes with an electric pump (sold separately), so it won’t take long for the fun to get started. Once summer is over, it can also double as a ball pit or indoor play space for younger kids, so you get more use out of it year-round.
Parents said it’s an instant hit with kids. “Got this for my small children,” one shopper wrote. “They couldn’t wait for me to finish pumping it up before getting in.” Another reviewer called it “a great value for a family-sized inflatable pool,” while a fellow shopper noted it’s also “perfect for a few adults.”

One of Country Music's Biggest Crossover Hits Is Climbing the Charts Again 46 Years Later
More than four decades after it first raced up the charts, Eddie Rabbitt's signature hit "Drivin' My Life Away" is finding new life with music fans.
The 1980 classic made its very first appearance on Billboard's Digital Song Sales chart this week, debuting at No. 23 and introducing one of country music's defining crossover hits to a new generation of listeners. Perhaps the song's surging new success is due to its inclusion in the racing video game NASCAR 25, the soundtrack for which was overseen by drivers Dale Earnhardt Jr., Ryan Blaney and Bubba Wallace.
Released in June 1980 as the lead single from Rabbitt's platinum-selling album Horizon, "Drivin' My Life Away" was inspired by the singer's own experience working as a truck driver before finding success in Nashville. Rabbitt co-wrote the song with Even Stevens and David Malloy, turning the long hours and lonely highways of truckers into one of country music's most infectious singalongs.
Related: Iconic ’70s Country-Rock Band Is Climbing the Charts Again 67 Years After Forming
The song became a breakthrough crossover success. It climbed to No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart while also reaching No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 3 on the Adult Contemporary chart, proving Rabbitt could appeal far beyond traditional country audiences. The crossover success of "Drivin' My Life Away" paved the way for an even bigger smash just months later when "I Love a Rainy Night" topped all three charts, cementing Rabbitt as one of the biggest crossover stars of the era.
Long before launching his recording career, Rabbitt had already made a name for himself as one of Nashville's most respected songwriters. He wrote Elvis Presley's 1970 hit "Kentucky Rain" and Ronnie Milsap's chart-topper "Pure Love" before signing with Elektra Records in 1975 and beginning his own run of hits.
Related: Country Star Breaks 49-Year-Old Billboard Record With No. 1 Hit Song
Music critics often credited Rabbitt with helping shape the polished country-pop sound that dominated the early 1980s. Along with hits including "Every Which Way but Loose," "Suspicions," "Step by Step" and "You and I" with Crystal Gayle, "Drivin' My Life Away" showcased his ability to blend country storytelling with rock and pop influences without losing his Nashville roots.
Rabbitt died in 1998 at age 56, but his music has continued to resonate with audiences. The latest Billboard milestone suggests that "Drivin' My Life Away" is still connecting with listeners, more than 45 years after the road anthem first became one of the defining crossover hits of its time.

LeBron James Leaving Lakers: Fans React, Plus What's Next for Bronny James
LeBron James will not return for a ninth season with the Los Angeles Lakers. ESPN first reported the all-time highest-scoring player’s decision on Tuesday, ahead of the NBA’s free agency window.
Who will LeBron play for in the 2026-2027 season? As of now, there’s no word on who the 41-year-old will play for. With the free agency window opening Tuesday, June 4, at 6 pm, it’s anyone’s guess.
While James has not publicly addressed his decision, fans and insiders alike have thoughts on where the now-former Laker will go.
Some have mused that he could return to Miami or Cleveland, while others note that, with Draymond Green declining his $27.6 million player option, the Warriors could consider signing James.
Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paulrecently told ESPN’s Shams Charania, “LeBron James is one of the greatest athletes in history. We will always be thankful for his eight years with the Lakers, including the title he led us to in 2020 under the toughest imaginable circumstances and the countless records he broke in purple and gold.”
Jeanie Buss, Lakers’ governor, also told ESPN, “We wish him all the best in the future, both on the court and off. He will always be a cherished part of the Lakers family.”
Will Bronny James continue to play for the Lakers? In 2024, LeBron and Bronny James made history as the first father-son pairing to hit the court together on the same NBA team. So will Bronny stay with the Lakers now that his famous father is leaving? As of now, it looks like he could.
Bronny is entering his third year of a four-year contract with the NBA team. With his 2026-2027 season contract now fully guaranteed, he will likely remain a Laker. That is, unless he is traded (or pushes for a trade).
What do fans think about LeBron leaving the Lakers?Bronny is actually at the top of the list of fan concerns. At least, on social media. In an NBA subreddit post, one commenter joked, “Who gets custody of Bronny?” while another noted, “And Bronny’s contract just became guaranteed…waited until his son got paid and dipped.”
Other fans gave their opinions on where they think LeBron will go next, with comments including, “I assume it’s gotta be the Warriors. Should be interesting” and, “Welcome to Sacramento, my king.”
And then, as if you didn’t see this coming, the retirement comments poured in. When one fan posted, “LeBron and Curry retirement tour going to be absolutely lit,” others mused, “Maybe they can get the Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney to play the national anthem at every game,” and, “Honestly, both of them deserve a retirement tour. It’ll be crazy if it’s the same season. They ought to take turns, though. Bron then Steph.”
