What Is Bti?

Bti is a naturally occurring bacterium found in soil. When mosquito larvae consume it, its toxins affect the larvae before they can develop into adults.

The CDC identifies Bti as a bacterial larvicide and says it has been used for mosquito control for more than 30 years. Because Bti targets the larval stage, it works before mosquitoes become the biting adults that homeowners are trying to avoid.

How Do Mosquito Dunks Work?

Mosquito dunks are solid forms of Bti designed to float in standing water and gradually release the active ingredient. Mosquito larvae consume Bti while feeding in the water, and the toxins interfere with their development.

The larvae die before reaching adulthood. Bti does not control adult mosquitoes that are already flying or biting.

• Gutters and downspouts
• Tree holes
• Ornamental ponds
• Unused pools
• Other containers that hold water

The CDC recommends larvicides for standing water that cannot be covered, dumped or removed. It specifically lists rain barrels, gutters, downspouts, tree holes, pool covers and other water-holding sites as potential treatment areas.

Always check the individual product label before applying a dunk. Different Bti products can have different approved uses, application rates and precautions.

Are Mosquito Dunks Safe for Fish, Birds and Pets?

When used according to the label, Bti is considered safe for people, pets, birds, fish and other animals. The CDC says larvicides do not harm people, pets or the environment when used according to product-label instructions. Its Bti guidance also says Bti does not harm people, pets, aquatic life or other animals when used as directed.

The EPA reports that Bti has no toxicity to people, and Bti is designed to target specific insect larvae rather than fish, birds or mammals.

The important qualification is the product label. Not every Bti product is approved for every type of water, so check the label before treating a pond, birdbath, rain barrel or other water source.

How Long Do Mosquito Dunks Last?

Many mosquito dunks are formulated to release Bti gradually. The EPA-registered label for Summit Dunks states that the product releases effective levels of Bti for 30 days or more under typical conditions.

The actual treatment interval depends on the product and conditions at the treatment site. Follow the package directions for replacement intervals rather than assuming every dunk lasts the same amount of time.

The report, conducted by fashion brand Kaiia and shared with Parade, analyzed search volume data from Keyword Planner to measure certain factors, such as how long each look has stayed popular, how many people searched for it in 2026, and how well it maintained online interest.

And the look that claimed the No. 1 spot? Grace Kelly‘s wedding dress.

The dress the actress and Princess of Monaco wore for her nuptials on April 19, 1956, garnered 241,800 searches and has retained 90.8% interest since it was worn 70 years ago.

Wedding dresses dominated the list overall, with gowns worn by Princess Diana, Princess Margaret, Queen Elizabeth, and even Queen Victoria — worn in 1840 — making the list.

As for the younger generation of royals, the wedding gowns of Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle, and Princess Beatrice also made the list, in that order.

If there’s one experience that can make a grandparent feel like a kid again, it’s spotting an elephant, lion or giraffe in the wild.

“South Africa has a true wow factor that works across generations. A safari can create the same sense of excitement for a child as it does for a grandparent,” says Natalia Villanueva, a luxury travel advisor at NUBA. “Seeing elephants, lions, and other wildlife in their natural habitat is something special at any age.”

September and October are particularly appealing months for a safari in the Greater Kruger region, where the tail end of the dry season can make wildlife easier to spot around watering holes. November ushers in warmer, wetter conditions, but also brings lush landscapes and opportunities to see young animals.

For families traveling with grandparents, private safari accommodations can make all the difference. Villanueva recommends properties such as Singita Castleton in Sabi Sand and Royal Malewane, where private villas and safari vehicles allow families to customize their schedules rather than follow a rigid group itinerary.

But there’s more to South Africa than game drives. Pairing a safari with Cape Town and the Winelands gives families a mix of wildlife, culture, food and outdoor adventures.

“At Table Mountain, for example, part of the family can hike while others take the cable car and everyone can meet at the top,” Villanueva explains.

Other crowd-pleasers include visiting the penguins at Boulders Beach, exploring Cape Town’s waterfront and discovering the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, housed in a converted grain silo.

The key is building an itinerary that allows everyone to experience the destination at their own pace, whether that means an early-morning safari, an afternoon by the pool or a leisurely family dinner.

“Ecuador also checks nearly every box for families,” says Elizabeth Gordon of Extraordinary Journeys, a luxury travel company specializing in customized itineraries. “It offers great weather, safety, short domestic flights, simple and delicious cuisine, and a wonderful mix of history, nature and wildlife.”

Located roughly 600 miles off Ecuador’s coast, the Galápagos is famous for its giant tortoises, sea lions, marine iguanas and extraordinary biodiversity. And unlike a traditional wildlife safari, many of the islands’ animals can be observed at remarkably close range.

“Families with young children can stay at a land-based lodge in the Galápagos and take boat excursions each day to snorkel, walk among sea lions and giant tortoises, and see wildlife that has no fear of people.”

For families who prefer an organized expedition, luxury tour operator Geographic Expeditions offers its 10-day Galápagos: Exploring the Enchanted Islands journey throughout the year. The small-group cruise itinerary includes naturalist-led excursions, snorkeling, kayaking and opportunities to explore remote islands.

When it comes to fall foliage, New England might get most of the attention stateside, but Japan is another spectacular destination for an autumn family getaway.

From October through November, vibrant shades of red, orange and gold sweep across different parts of the country, transforming temples, gardens and mountain landscapes into postcard-worthy scenes.

“Japan has an incredible ability to fascinate almost every generation,” says Villanueva. “Children and teenagers can enjoy technology, anime, pop culture, and theme parks, while adults can explore the country’s gastronomy, art, gardens, temples, and traditions.”

For first-time visitors, the advisor recommends combining Tokyo and Kyoto, with the option to add a nature-focused destination such as Nikko or Hakone.

In Tokyo, grandchildren can explore gaming culture, interactive attractions and bustling neighborhoods, while grandparents enjoy museums, traditional markets and world-class dining.

Kyoto offers a different pace, with peaceful gardens, historic temples, tea ceremonies and opportunities to discover traditional Japanese crafts.

Families with younger children might also consider Osaka, home to Universal Studios Japan and Super Nintendo World.

One of Japan’s biggest advantages for multigenerational travel is its transportation infrastructure. The country’s extensive rail network makes it relatively easy to travel between major destinations, while luggage-forwarding services can spare grandparents and parents the hassle of hauling suitcases from city to city.

As for accommodations, Villanueva is partial to Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi and The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko if you’re looking to splurge on a once-in-a-lifetime trip, or traditional ryokans in Hakone, such as FUFU Hakone.

The combination of modern conveniences, cultural experiences and spectacular seasonal scenery makes Japan especially appealing for families looking to trade a traditional fall getaway for something more adventurous.

4. Costa Rica Costa Rica’s lush rainforests, stunning Pacific coastline and year-round wildlife encounters make it an ideal destination for multigenerational family adventures.

For families who would rather swap fall foliage for tropical rainforests and warm-weather adventures, Costa Rica deserves a spot on the list, particularly toward the end of November.

While September and October can be quite rainy along the Pacific coast, late November marks the transition toward the drier season in popular destinations such as Peninsula Papagayo.

“Costa Rica works particularly well because it can be as relaxed or as active as each traveler wants it to be,” shares Villanueva. “It offers incredible nature, wildlife, beaches, and a wide variety of experiences that can be adapted to different ages and energy levels.”

For a multigenerational itinerary, Villanueva also recommends combining the Arenal region with Peninsula Papagayo.

In Arenal, families can explore hanging bridges, discover rainforest wildlife and enjoy guided nature walks, with activities tailored to different fitness levels.

Peninsula Papagayo, meanwhile, offers a more resort-focused experience, complete with beaches, water sports, wildlife excursions and opportunities for relaxation.

Luxury properties such as Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica, Andaz Peninsula Papagayo and Nekajui, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, are among Villanueva’s top recommendations for families traveling together.

Another option is Hacienda AltaGracia, where personalized experiences can range from horseback riding and hiking to more leisurely pursuits.

Regardless of which destination you choose, the experts agree on one thing: Trying to keep everyone together every minute is a recipe for vacation burnout.

“The biggest mistake is trying to move around too much and cover too much ground, especially with kids,” Gordon says. “Travel can be exhausting for everyone, so it’s important to slow down and soak it in.”

Her advice? Spend three or four nights in each destination rather than constantly packing up and moving to the next hotel.

Emmanuel Burgio, founder and CEO of luxury travel company Blue Parallel, agrees that flexibility is essential.

“With large families, I think the mistake is assuming success means keeping everyone together every minute while in reality, giving people some choice yet still creating those wonderful shared meals, excursions and milestone moments is often what makes the family feel more connected.”

Burgio recalls planning a trip to Argentina for 16 family members ranging in age from 2 to 77, including an older traveler with limited mobility. By creating shared experiences alongside separate activities suited to different ages and abilities, the entire family was able to enjoy the journey without feeling restricted.

And that’s ultimately what makes a successful grandparents-and-grandkids getaway: not checking every attraction off a list, but finding a destination where everyone can make memories together, with enough breathing room to enjoy the experience on their own terms.

Halloween is all fun and games—unless someone actually gets hurt. Sure, fake blood is a neat trick. However, people—especially those trick-or-treating with children—will want to prioritize safety over everything else, including first dibs on the best treats.

 Dr. Makayla Romboy, MD, is a board-certified pediatric emergency medicine physician at Pediatrix Medical Group in Las Vegas. She is also a mother of two young children, ages four and eight. Dr. Romboy knows Halloween is frighteningly fun, especially with kids, but she’s seen enough in her time as a pediatric ER doctor to be scared straight about Halloween and safety.

“Halloween is such a fun holiday to celebrate with kids, but it’s always important to consider safety so your family can fully enjoy the holiday, as accidents and choking may be fatal. We all want our kids to be healthy and safe,” Dr. Romboy says.

Right. That’s why you might make like your parents and inspect candy for razors (eating a few safe packs of your personal favorite Halloween treat while your kid isn’t looking; you’re allowed). Unfortunately, Dr. Romboy says that likely won’t move the safety needle as much as we once believed.

“Razors and other dangerous items embedded in candy are more folklore than a true threat to kids,” Dr. Romboy says. “There are very common and real threats that are more important to worry about, such as choking hazards, traffic dangers and accidental drug ingestions.”

For instance, choking is always a risk, and Halloween is definitely not an exception, given that candy is the culprit in 28% of choking-related hospital visits for kids under age four.

‘What I Won’t Let My Kids Do on Halloween as a Pediatric ER Doctor’

Dr. Romboy, a pediatric ER doctor and mother of two, never, ever lets her kids dart out or cross mid-block where drivers cannot see them while trick-or-treating on Halloween.

“The biggest safety threat to families on Halloween is cars,” Dr. Romboy says. “Drivers may be distracted by the festivities and have a hard time seeing kids in the dark. Kids are also more likely to excitedly cross the street when trick-or-treating.”

As a mother, Dr. Romboy empathizes with parents and kids. Trick-or-treating is so much fun, and it can feel like a race to get to the best candy (or get any candy before it runs out or someone dumps the whole bowl on the porch into their bag).

“It is tempting to dart across the street to get to the next house quickly, but cars may not expect a child in the road mid-block,” Dr. Romboy says. “It is important to cross the street at stop signs and crosswalks after appropriately checking for cars.”

Dr. Romboy points to research showing that the risk of pedestrian fatalities is a whopping 43% higher on Halloween. Plus, children ages four through eight—which spans the age range of her own kids—are 10 times more likely to get hit by a car on Halloween than on any other night. Still, she cautions that you’re never too old to follow the rules.

 “Kids are never old enough to dart across a road or cross mid-block,” Dr. Romboy says. “They have a harder time understanding how fast cars are moving and may not pay enough attention to driveways, crossroads and side streets.”

All adults can serve as role models, especially parents on Halloween.

“Parents should always model the safety behavior they want their kids to follow,” Dr. Romboy says. “Children learn more by example than by being told what to do. If they see their parent cross mid-street, even when done safely, they will assume it is safe for them to do so.”

What To Do Instead

Dr. Romboy urges people to be extra careful, especially during trick-or-treating, because the risk of traffic fatalities spikes on Halloween. Other ways to keep yourself and kids safe include:

• Cross at a crosswalk or stop sign every time. Drivers may not expect someone to run out in front of a car. Sadly, Dr. Romboy knows children are more likely to be struck by a car or fall down when running.
• Wear brightly colored or reflective clothes. Romboy explains that drivers are more likely to see kids when they wear visible clothes. If your kid is going as Batman or a vampire, a reflector can help.
• Travel as a group. You don’t have eyes in the back of your head. Also, your head doesn’t actually swivel. Dr. Romboy says traveling in groups “allows multiple adults to help watch over children and makes you more visible to drivers.”

Strength in numbers is sweeter than a Pixie stick.

Dancing With the Stars’ latest theme night has some fans crying foul. For the upcoming October 13 Super Bowl Night, which will honor music and history from past NFL halftime shows, ESPN Monday Night Football announcer Joe Buck was announced as the guest judge. But some fans think producers made the wrong call.

On social media, fans questioned why NFL sideline reporter and longtime DWTS co-host Erin Andrews wasn’t invited back for the guest judge role. Andrews served as co-host on Dancing With the Stars from March 2014 until July 2020, alongside veteran show host Tom Bergeron, and was also a contestant and third-place finisher on the ABC dancing competition in 2010.

Fans on the r/dancingwiththestars subreddit were perplexed by the announcement of Buck for this week’s DWTS panel, noting that Andrews or other NFL-related DWTS alumni should have been a no-brainer for the show’s first-ever Super Bowl Night.

“Hines Ward and Emmitt Smith were Super Bowl MVPs and DWTS champs. Donald Driver, also a Super Bowl champ. But sure!” one fan wrote.

“Erin Andrews, former co-host! Rashad Jennings, previous winner and that man loves returning! The guest judge is such an odd pick,” another agreed.

“Why is this the guest judge? There are so many other choices who actually have a connection to the NFL and DWTS! Emmitt Smith, Jerry Rice, Hines Ward, Erin Andrews…” a third chimed in.

“Wish we could have one of our DWTS world NFL or NFL-adjacent people judge like Erin Andrews or Kenny Mayne (hello Dance Center!),’ added another.

“Dislike who they have for guest judge. Like whyyy?! At least get Erin Andrews…” another wrote.

“Erin would have been PERFECT since she used to host the show!” wrote another DWTS viewer, with another adding, “AND was a contestant (who made it far)!”

In 2020, Andrews was blindsided when she was let go from Dancing With the Stars along with Bergeron. The two were replaced by Tyra Banks for the 29th season of DWTS that fall.

At the time, Andrews told the Token CEO podcast she was “bummed” by her unexpected ousting from the ABC celebrity ballroom show.

“Nobody wants to be let go when it’s not on their terms,” she shared. “I really enjoyed being in that space and I think I’m somebody that, you know, as much as I do love sports — I’m a fan of a lot of things, reality TV, I’m just a fan of TV and so, I think that’s why Dancing was a great fit for me because, you know, it was live. You didn’t know what was going to happen.”

“I felt sorry for myself,” she added. “I was like, ‘Oh no, I’m a loser, this is really bad,’ and then you just start talking to other people from other networks and people that have production groups and they’re like, ‘You’re gonna find something.’ … Yeah, it was a super big bummer.”

Over the years, Andrews never stated that she would refuse an invite back to the ballroom, but her former TV partner once did. In 2023, Bergeron told Cheryl Burke’s Sex, Lies and Spray Tans podcast that he would “never” return to the ABC competition program because it was no longer the “same show” or “world” that it once was.

“The show that I left was not the show that I loved, and that’s it in a nutshell,” he said, before noting that some progress had been made with the return of former showrunners.

Bergeron ultimately returned to Dancing with the Stars as a guest judge on November 11, 2025, for the show’s 20th-anniversary episode, thrilling fans and marking his first appearance on the show since his departure in 2020.

Veteran actor Michael Douglas has shared a surprising story from his college years, and this time, he has revealed an unexpected decision he made to pay for his education, one that even involved his famous father, Kirk Douglas.

In his memoir, One Helluva Ride, the 82-year-old actor noted that he once sold nearly 200 pounds of marijuana to cover his tuition at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The memoir also explores his complicated relationship with his famous father, Kirk Douglas, and the personal struggles behind his decades-long Hollywood career.

In the late 1960s, Douglas found himself responsible for financing the remainder of his education after his father gave him $10,000 when he turned 21 and told him to manage on his own. His parents had helped cover his earlier college expenses, but the money came with a clear message that further financial support was not forthcoming. Rather than take out student loans, Douglas came up with another plan and began transporting marijuana from California to New York, taking advantage of the significant difference in prices between the two coasts.

While talking about the same in the book, the Wall Street star explained that two Italian leather suitcases gifted to him by his father became central to the operation. According to the claim, each suitcase could hold approximately 22 kilograms of marijuana, which allowed him to transport 44 kilograms on each trip. The memoir stated that he made the journey twice, moving a total of 88 kilograms, or just over 194 pounds.

“When I went back east to visit Mom for Christmas, I would fill those suitcases with forty-four kilos of grass, which I could buy for seventy-five dollars a kilo in California and sell for five hundred in New York,” Douglas wrote (via Entertainment Weekly). 

The actor claimed that he could purchase marijuana for $75 per kilogram in California and sell it for $500 per kilogram in New York. Based on those figures, the two trips brought in roughly $37,400 in profit before other potential expenses. Moreover, he said the arrangement allowed him to pay for his final two years of college and graduate without student debt. The actor also recalled eventually telling his father about the scheme after Kirk repeatedly used his son’s financial independence as an example for his brothers.

Douglas acknowledged in the memoir that his decision was illegal and said a student loan would have been the more responsible option. However, he made it clear that he never felt bad about selling drugs.

“I could feel guilty about my part in distributing drugs, but it was the late sixties to early seventies. No one needed my help finding their way to drugs. And that was how I paid for my last two years of college and graduated with no student loans and no debt,” the star added.

The marijuana story is just one of several personal revelations in One Helluva Ride, released on October 6. The memoir revisits Douglas’ rise from being Kirk Douglas’ son to becoming an acclaimed actor and producer in his own right.

Tiffani Thiessen, who rose to stardom on Saved by the Bell, is opening up about how her lookalike daughter, Harper, is very into wearing ’90s fashion.

Thiessen, 52, played the beloved Bayside High cheerleader Kelly Kapowski on the teen comedy from 1989 to 1993. She continued her role on the short-lived series Saved by the Bell: The College Years. In her post-Saved by the Bell years, Thiessen landed on Beverly Hills, 90210 as the conniving Valerie Malone, who replaced Shannen Doherty as the brunette troublemaker for 5 lively seasons. These days, Thiessen stars in the new Freeform and Disney+ show Coven Academy. But she’s also a busy mom and has a lookalike 16-year-old daughter, Harper. In a new interview with PEOPLE, the actress shared that Harper loves to wear ’90s style clothing… which Thiessen knows a thing or two about.

“I have a teenage daughter, so of course, I see, like, the ’90s — and now the Y2K style that’s so popular right now in fashion and makeup and hair and all that. It’s neat to see the full circle, like, literally go around, and seeing it happen over again,” she shared.

Looking back on the era when she rose to stardom, Thiessen went on to say that she’s not averse to all the styles returning.

“I think the feathered bangs that are out now are totally fine and amazing. I think those [past] feather bangs — with lots of volume and a lot of hairspray — those can be left behind,” she explained, adding that she likes “tiny sunglasses,” blazers worn with crop tops, and suspenders with baggy pants. She also noted one of her most legendary looks as Kapowski, who frequently wore overalls with one shoulder unbuckled.

“I hear people are doing overalls again, too.  I was wearing those a lot, as well,” she noted.

In 1971, John Lennon released what would become one of the defining songs of his solo career. Fifty-five years later, “Imagine” has not only endured, it has been ranked the greatest song of all time.

“Imagine” was released as a single in the United States on Oct. 11, 1971, following the September release of Lennon’s album of the same name.

More than five decades later, author Carolyn McHugh put the song at No. 1 in her book “The 100 Greatest Songs of All Time: Create Your Ultimate Playlist,” released in December 2025.

McHugh’s book ranks 100 songs spanning pop, rock, soul, folk and funk, with “Imagine” beating out every other track for the top spot. In fact, Lennon narrowly beat his former bandmates: The Beatles’ “Yesterday” landed at No. 2.

McHugh describes “Imagine” as one of Lennon’s most enduring works, praising its “powerful message of hope, peace and unity,” as well as its “simple, yet profound lyrics” and “hauntingly beautiful melody.”

The song’s origins stretch back to Lennon’s years with The Beatles. According to HISTORY, Lennon began writing “Imagine” while he was still a member of the band, although he didn’t record it until after their breakup.

Yoko Ono had a significant influence on the song. Lennon later said its lyrics and concept came from Ono’s 1964 book “Grapefruit.” In 2017, Ono was officially added as a co-writer of “Imagine.”

Lennon recorded the song at Tittenhurst Park, the English country estate he shared with Ono, with Phil Spector producing alongside Ono.

Despite becoming one of the most recognizable songs of Lennon’s career, “Imagine” never reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It peaked at No. 3 in the United States, while its original U.K. release reached No. 6. Following Lennon’s murder in December 1980, the song returned to the British charts and spent four weeks at No. 1.

Its legacy ultimately grew far beyond its original chart performance.

“Imagine” has been used at major events around the world, including the 2012 London Olympics and 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. It has also become part of New York City’s New Year’s Eve tradition, performed shortly before midnight in Times Square.

The song’s title is even the sole word inscribed at Strawberry Fields, the Central Park memorial dedicated to Lennon.

Numerous artists have recorded “Imagine” over the decades, including Diana Ross, Joan Baez, Eva Cassidy and Dolly Parton, while performers including Elton John, David Bowie and Queen have performed it in tribute to Lennon.

But 55 years after its release, McHugh’s ranking gives “Imagine” another distinction: Of the 100 songs chosen for The 100 Greatest Songs of All Time, Lennon’s enduring 1971 hit stands at No. 1.

In late 1992, Alan Jackson stood in a Nashville studio putting the final touches on what would become his landmark third album, A Lot About Livin’ (And a Little ’bout Love). Between recording, Jackson and his co-writer Jim McBride started writing a sound recounting Jackson’s teenage years growing up along the Georgia-Alabama border.

Within minutes, they had knocked out an infectious anthem about hot-rodding, young love, and cooling off in the waters of the Chattahoochee River. Yet, after the tape stopped rolling, Jackson found himself staring at a song he was reluctant to release.

To the country star, “Chattahoochee” felt like little more than a fun throwaway, a song too localized and lighthearted to relate to people outside of Georgia. He was convinced that fans outside his small hometown area wouldn’t care about a hyper-specific river story.

Little did he know, the song would rewrite country music history and define his entire superstar legacy. “Chattahoochee” hit the top spot on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs Chart in July 1993 and remained at that position for four weeks.

In an interview for his daughter Mattie Jackson’s In Joy Life podcast, the country said, “A lot of my songs I write out of my life are true experiences, but at the same time they relate to other people. When we cut that, it was a fun, uptempo thing about coming [of] age.”

He continued, “I thought, ‘Well, yeah, it’s a fun song, and I like it, and people in Georgia are gonna like it. Nobody in the rest of the country, the rest of the world, don’t know what it is or cares about it.’”

He continued, “I learned right quick that everybody has a Chattahoochee. It might be called something else, or might not even be a river at all, but the story was something people could relate to in their life, wherever they were from. So you just never know.”

“Chattahoochee” would go on to a CMA Award for Single of the Year and Song of the Year in 1993. At the time of his win, Jackson stated, via a Facebook reel, “It was a good single for me.”

He continued, “I want to thank Jim McBride for helping me create that song. For all the people across America who loved it, thank you.”

Smith initially wrote the song on a rented four-track machine and brought it to the band while they were still performing regularly around Portland. The group eventually recorded five songs for the independently released 1985 EP Tha’s Right!, which included “I Can’t Wait.”

The song had already been part of the band’s live set, but Smith says they originally played it much faster. When they recorded it, he slowed the song down to 104 beats per minute. The band initially thought he was crazy, but the slower groove ultimately became one of the things that gave the recording its distinctive feel.

Then came one of the song’s strangest ingredients.

Smith was listening to The Time’s “Jungle Love” and heard bottles being used as percussion. He decided to try something similar on “I Can’t Wait,” adding a stereo bottle part that became part of the finished recording.

The wine bottles may sound like a quirky footnote, but they were actually part of the song’s carefully constructed rhythm. The recording also used a Linn drum machine and other studio techniques that helped create the layered sound that made the track stand out.

“I Can’t Wait” initially became a regional hit in Portland after a local radio station began playing the song. Listener response was immediate, but major record labels weren’t initially interested.

Nu Shooz didn’t disappear immediately after its breakthrough. The group recorded another Atlantic album, Told U So, in 1988, but it didn’t match the success of Poolside. A third Atlantic album, Eat & Run, was recorded but ultimately unreleased. By 1992, Smith and Day had moved on from the group.

The husband-and-wife team eventually returned to Nu Shooz, however. They released new music, including the 2006 Nu Shooz Orchestra remake of “I Can’t Wait,” followed by the chamber-jazz album Pandora’s Box in 2010 and the archival collection Kung Pao Kitchen in 2012.

In 2016, they released Bagtown, a studio album that returned to the funk, R&B, jazz and soul influences that had always been part of their musical identity. They also spent several years performing on ’80s revival tours before announcing their retirement from performing in 2019.

Why “I Can’t Wait” Still Sounds Like 1985

There is something almost impossible to separate from the era about “I Can’t Wait.” The production captures a very specific moment when analog recording techniques and emerging electronic technology were beginning to collide.

The Linn drum machine, synthesizer sounds, rhythmic vocals and unusual percussion all contribute to a track that feels instantly transported from the middle of the 1980s. But the song doesn’t sound dated in the way some early electronic pop can. Its groove remains catchy, and Valerie Day’s vocals give it a warmth that keeps the production from becoming cold or overly mechanical.

That’s part of what makes the song’s latest recognition so fitting. Nearly four decades after it was recorded, “I Can’t Wait” remains instantly identifiable within seconds.
