Today marks a sad day not just for country music, but for America. Not many people outside of government or military cue flags at the White House to be lowered at half-staff, but that’s the legacy and impact of Dolly Parton as she passed away at 80 years old.

Throughout her remarkable years as a world-class entertainer and founder of Tennessee’s Dollywood theme park, when she needed a break from the spotlight, she liked to escape the bright lights of Nashville, Branson, and even Hollywood, for a lesser-known California escape known as the Danish Capital of the U.S.

Her spacious triplex was the textbook definition of a hideaway — so much so that she “paparazzi-proofed” the house with a come-and-go corridor undetectable to outsiders.

Solvang, CA is roughly 35 miles from more notable Santa Barbara, oozing storybook vibes with windmills, Danish-style architecture and European-inspired bakeries exuding quintessential Danish charm without needing a passport.

The California Post reported — unrelated to her death — that her vacation home, which she owned from 2004 through 2014, is up for sale.

Of course, being on the West Coast, it comes with a premium price tag, and should come with no surprise that she could easily afford it since her reported net worth surpassed $650 million.

The listing is represented by Cris Lapp of Black Oak Homes and Mortgages, offering anyone with a budget of $1,995,000 the chance to purchase a piece of history in more ways than one: Parton occasionally stayed there during her quiet escapes, and the property itself dates back more than a century to 1920.

Perhaps best of all — at least to diehard Dolly fans — is her original “Wig Room,” which the listing says remains from her days escaping to the property for some West Coast R&R, away from pestering paps in one of California’s most charming towns.

Dolly Parton‘s death has shocked the world, with fans still coming to terms with the sudden and tragic news.

Wearing a colorful floral dress and her hair in soft waves, Guthrie attended the US Open Exhibition Match event “Roger Federer: An Icon Returns To New York” at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City. After all that she’s been through in the last year, it’s great to see Guthrie have some time to enjoy herself.

What Has Savannah Guthrie Said About Returning to Today?

It’s been a long road for Guthrie this year as she’s returned to Today while navigating her mother’s disappearance. Before her big return in April, Guthrie sat down for an interview with her close friend and colleague, Hoda Kotb. In the interview, Guthrie shared that she was apprehensive, but hopeful, about returning.

“I don’t know if I can do it,” Guthrie said to Kotb. “I don’t know if I’ll belong anymore, but I would like to try. I would like to try.”

Guthrie also shared additional information that previously hadn’t been shared with the public, including the fact that back doors to Nancy’s house were found open and that two ransom notes the family received are believed to have been real, the piece shared.

While her mother’s disappearance is always on her mind, Guthrie has shared that returning to the Today studio has brought a “little respite.” Noting that the team is like “family,” she shared she wouldn’t have “even tried to come back” if she had a different job. Still, the path back to Today has been a challenge.

“It’s always with me,” Guthrie said, Variety reported. “I cry every morning on the way to work, and I cry every morning on the way home. I’m grateful to have good friends, and to be able to come to such a beautiful, joyous, and supportive place, and like so many people out there, you can hold all of these things together.”

Then the phone rang the night before, and it was Colonel Tom Parker, Presley’s manager, with a condition nobody had mentioned. Elvis did not record anything unless Parker’s side took half the publishing.

She Said No, and She Was 28

Parton, who died Tuesday at 80, had written the song in 1973 as a goodbye to her longtime duet partner Porter Wagoner, on the same day she wrote “Jolene.” It was one of roughly 3,000 songs she wrote, and a No. 1 country hit under her own name. Handing over half of it meant handing over what she planned to leave her family. She turned Presley down in 1974 and, by her own account, cried all night. “I had to keep that copyright in my pocket,” she later said.

Then Whitney Houston Recorded It

Eighteen years on, Whitney Houston cut it for The Bodyguard. Her version spent 14 weeks at No. 1, sold more than 24 million copies and stands as the best-selling single by a woman in history. Every one of those records paid the writer. She had opened Dollywood six years before Houston ever walked into the studio, and she kept building for another three decades after.

Before any of that, on Oct. 9, 1973, the Presleys finalized their divorce at a Santa Monica courthouse. Parton told BBC Radio 2 what Priscilla Presley had described to her: as they came down the courthouse steps, Elvis sang her the song. He never did record it. That was as close as he got.

In 2023, on her rock album Rockstar, Parton released “I Dreamed About Elvis,” a track she had written roughly 20 years earlier after dreaming he was singing her song. She cast Ronnie McDowell as Presley’s voice and brought in the Jordanaires, Elvis’s own backing group, to sing behind him.

Twenty years after Steve Irwin’s death on September 4, 2006, his legacy as the Crocodile Hunter and wildlife conservationist is still top of mind, thanks to the passion of his wife, Terri, and the commitment and talents of his children, Bindi and Robert.

How Steve and Terri Met

In 1991, Terri, who was running a cougar rehabilitation center, took a research trip to Australia. Driving down a local road, she stopped into the tiny family zoo that Steve’s parents started as a reptile park in 1973. There was Steve, running a crocodile feeding demo.

Terri said it was like seeing Tarzan and Indiana Jones wrapped into one. For his part, Steve was so distracted by Terri’s presence that he nearly got eaten by Agro, the park’s giant saltwater crocodile. The two toured the park together, talking wildlife until closing. The following weekend, Terri returned and went to work raking and cleaning stalls before heading back to Oregon.

A month later, Steve booked a flight to Oregon and spent Thanksgiving with Terri and her family. Steve proposed four months later while Terri was visiting him in Australia, and they were married six months after that.

The Honeymoon Pilot

They’d planned a normal honeymoon in Oregon, but a call about a “problem croc” had them flying to Australia instead to capture the animal. A TV producer friend convinced them to film Steve and Terri at work. When the couple arrived, though, they learned that the croc had been shot by poachers. Steve was devastated, but the two made it their mission to find the croc’s mate. When they did, Steve told Terri to throw herself on the 10 foot crocodile—and she did.

That raw, home-movie-style “honeymoon” aired as a TV documentary called The Crocodile Hunter in 1992 in Australia. And the rest, as they say, is history.

The world is a little dimmer after the passing of beloved country music icon Dolly Parton.

The “I Will Always Love You” artist died at the age of 80 on Tuesday, August 25, her family confirmed.

“My family and I have shared a lifetime of beautiful memories with Dolly. But so have you. She has always been on your television, your record player, your CD and on your phone’s playlist, becoming an extended part of your family whether you liked it or not,” her nephew Brian Seaver shared in a heartfelt video announcement.

The family later revealed that, per Dolly’s request, the late singer would be laid to rest in a “small, private service held for immediate family.”

However, more than a decade prior to her passing, Dolly shared one detail that she wanted for her final goodbye.

“I’m sure they’ll be playing ‘I Will Always Love You’ when I die, just like they did with Whitney Houston,” Parton told Entertainment Weekly in 2014. “When they picked her coffin up and started in on that song, I started to cry, and I thought, ‘Oh my Lord.’ That’s when it hit me that she was really gone.”

While the ballad is arguably Parton’s biggest hit of her career, that was not the song she requested.

“There’s a song called ‘If We Never Meet Again,'” she said. “It’s an old country-gospel church song that talks about if we never meet again this side of heaven, I will meet you on that beautiful shore.”

Dolly died Tuesday after a “brief battle with cancer.” She was 80 years old.

Actress Mayim Bialik is revealing that some Big Bang Theory fans weren’t all that happy when her character, Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler, became Dr. Sheldon Cooper’s (Jim Parsons) love interest.

During an appearance on an August 2026 episode of The Official Big Bang Theory Podcast, Bialik explained that some viewers “really wanted Sheldon to be asexual,” causing them to feel almost betrayed when he began dating Amy. According to Bialik, she was aware of forums where fans would complain about Amy’s presence on the CBS sitcom, which had a 12-season run until 2019.

“There’s a tremendous amount of anger. And you know, that was one of the times where I just, I had to stop reading because it gets in your head,” said the actress, who joined the Big Bang Theory cast in season 3, during the podcast episode. “I’m the kind of person, like a million people could be happy, but if one person is not, it will stick with me forever. So, there was a real need for me to kind of tune that out and trust, you know, the faces that I saw in our writers and our producers, who were encouraging this work and encouraging us to keep going.”

She also said while Big Bang Theory viewers weren’t “throwing tomatoes at [her]” at fan conventions like Comic-Con, some members of the show’s fandom did approach her to let her know they were unsure about Amy and Sheldon’s dynamic.

In addition, Bialik clarified she wasn’t upset by the fan’s passionate interest in Amy and Sheldon, who eventually marry during the show’s 11th season.

“It shows how deeply people cared and had invested in the show and, in particular, in Sheldon and what he meant to people,” said Bialik while recording the podcast episode. “And I think if I were a person who saw myself directly in Sheldon and felt like, ‘Oh my gosh, I’ve never seen myself projected that way,’ the thought that it might become something like, ‘Oh, now he’s the boyfriend and they’re going to make him dress up and they’re going to make him be all these things,’ that would really threaten me too as a viewer. I totally get it.”

Dolly Parton’s death date holds a special connection to her goddaughter, Miley Cyrus.

Parton’s reps confirmed to People that the legendary singer died on Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2026, at age 80 after a brief battle with an undisclosed form of cancer.

Three years before Parton’s death, Miley released one of her biggest hits, “Used to Be Young,” on Aug. 25, 2023—a date she deliberately chose because of its significance throughout her life and career.

“I decided to release ‘Used to Be Young’ on August 25 because this particular date historically has been important to me personally and in my career,” Miley said in her ABC special Endless Summer Vacation (Backyard Sessions) at the time.

Aug. 25 has marked several major milestones for the singer. On Aug. 25, 2010, Miley and her ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth, reportedly broke up for the first time. Three years later, on Aug. 25, 2013, Miley’s “Wrecking Ball” was released, while her controversial MTV Video Music Awards performance with Robin Thicke also took place that same day.

The date also has a personal connection to Miley’s family: Aug. 25 is her father Billy Ray Cyrus’ birthday.

Billy Ray’s friendship with Parton dates back to 1992, when he toured with the country music icon following the success of his chart-topping hit “Achy Breaky Heart.”

“We just got to be good friends,” Parton explained during a 2024 appearance on The Howard Stern Show. “He’s a Kentucky boy. I’m from Tennessee.”

Their friendship eventually extended to Billy Ray’s daughter. Parton became Miley’s godmother after Billy Ray asked her to take on the role when Miley was born.

“I’ve known her since she was a baby,” Parton said of Cyrus during a 2009 interview with Good Morning America. “Her father’s a friend of mine. And when she was born, he said, ‘You just have to be her godmother,’ and I said, ‘I accept.’”

“We never did do a big ceremony, but I’m so proud of her, love her and she’s just like one of my own,” Parton added.

During her 2024 interview with Stern, Parton said she and her goddaughter had “stayed very, very close” and that Cyrus would often run things by her when it came to her career.

“Well, she’s asked me a lot of things, and she mostly just runs things by me. And we talk. She’s very successful. Miley is very smart. She’s very intuitive about the business, and I just think Miley is a spectacular human being and an amazing talent,” Parton said.

Cyrus has also honored her godmother throughout her career, including collaborating with Parton on music and performing covers of her songs.

As news of Parton’s death spread Tuesday, Billy Ray shared an emotional tribute to his longtime friend on Instagram. Miley has not yet publicly commented on Parton’s death.

“I have so many moments and memories with Dolly, it’s hard to know where to start. Like every little boy, I grew up loving Dolly Parton. She was a part of our lives, on our TV’s, right in our living rooms,” he wrote.

“In 1992, I’ll never forget walking into her dressing room to apologize for all the tabloid stories which claimed I was having an affair with her,” he continued. “In true Dolly fashion, she just looked at me, winked and said, ‘Honey, this trash sells records!’”

Billy Ray concluded, “Dolly recently sent me a beautiful message, telling me she loved me with her whole heart. I will always love her in the same way ….. with my whole heart … and I always will.”

Dolly Parton has died at 80.

Her death was announced by her nephew Bryan Seaver in an Instagram video posted on Tuesday, Aug. 25.

Paul McCartney shared a touching tribute to the late singer on Instagram.

The former Beatles bassist posted two black-and-white photos from the 1970s. They show when the pair were first introduced. McCartney and his late wife, Linda McCartney, were in Tennessee to record “Junior’s Farm” and “Sally G.”

“The magnificent star Dolly Parton has died and it is so sad,” the 84-year-old musician wrote. “She was such a wonderful woman.”

He met her at the Grand Ole Opry while she was performing with Porter Wagoner, before her solo career.

“She was so bubbly and full of life it is difficult to take in the news that she has passed,” McCartney wrote. “Her songwriting, her singing and her philanthropy were unrivaled in the world of country music and it is hard to imagine living in a world without Dolly. She was a very clever business woman who understood the value of her music and, most importantly, the effect that she had on the people of the world.”

He added, “There was no greater honour for me than to have her sing my song ‘Let It Be’ and, even though I only made a small contribution to it, I am so honoured that she did it. I am so proud to have known her and admire her unique talents.”

Parton covered The Beatles’ track in 2024 on her album Rockstar.

“Thanks Dolly for the beautiful music you gave me and the whole world,” he concluded the tribute. “We will always love you, god bless and rest in peace. You were the best.”

Parton’s team revealed that she died after being diagnosed with cancer.

“Can you just do whatever you want?” Every stylist on this list named some version of this, independently, without prompting. It’s that major!

Rivera says it’s about style, yes, but also about safety. “I think it’s important to collectively have a plan with your stylist of what you are looking for—and what you don’t want is equally as important,” she tells Parade. “If you give your stylist free reign, it might not align with what you were envisioning.”

Arrojo is more blunt about why this fails the person saying it, explaining, “It sounds trusting, but it’s almost never true. Does ‘whatever’ include a pixie, blunt bangs or losing six inches? Most clients have limits, they just haven’t explained them.”

Dieda, who has been behind the chair for over 20 years, points to the emotional weight it puts on the stylist. “It’s your hair, your lifestyle and your confidence. If you end up not loving it, that ‘do whatever you want’ quickly turns into regret.”

What to ask instead

The fix is easy. As Arrojo puts it: “If you want expert guidance, say ‘I’m open to a change. What do you think would suit me, and why?’ That gives the stylist creative room while keeping you involved in a decision you’ll live with long after leaving the salon.”

Dean adds a second cringe-worthy question to avoid: asking for a discount because your former stylist charged less. Stylists invest constantly in education and training, he explains, and that expertise has real value. Bringing it up is a misunderstanding of how the industry actually works, he says.

And Brendnetta Ashley, Dippity-Do curly hair expert, has one last question that is going to drive any hairstylist mad: “How long is this gonna take?” asked mid-service.

“It instantly feels like I’m on a time crunch,” she says. “I want to give you the best service possible without either of us feeling time pressure.”

The stakes are higher than they might seem from the client’s side of the chair. “You might lose your hair length that takes a year to regrow, pay for corrective work or end up with a cut that demands more styling than you can manage,” Arrojo tells Parade.

Color corrections can require multiple appointments and additional chemical processing. And then there’s the confidence piece—when your hair doesn’t feel like you, it always shows.

Rivera puts it in terms of the stylist-client relationship. When there’s no plan, there’s no reference point if something goes wrong. “It puts a lot of pressure on the stylist especially if it’s your first time with your client. Getting a new haircut or color is very personal and if you don’t like it, the stylist doesn’t have anything to refer back to,” she explains.

Ashley frames what “do whatever you want” actually means underneath: “It sounds trusting, but it doesn’t tell us what you actually like. Great hair happens when expectations are clear.” Cavalcante’s version of the same point is that great hair “isn’t about what the stylist likes—it’s about creating something that fits the client.”

What To Do at the Salon for the Perfect Cut

Bring pictures. That’s the starting point every expert agrees on. Rivera goes as far as to say they’re non-negotiable.

“Pictures speak a thousand words,” she tells Parade. “They allow you to show the stylist what you are thinking and also include pictures of what you don’t want—this closes the gap on communication and direction.”

Beyond photos, Arrojo’s list of the right questions is worth saving:

• “How will this look air-dried?”
• “Can I tie it back?”
• “Where will the shortest layer fall?”
• “How often will it need cutting?”
• “What will I need to do at home?”

“The perfect cut,” he says, “isn’t simply the trendiest shape or the one that looks great after a salon blow-dry. It should work with your natural texture, styling ability, schedule and budget.”

Dieda says to think about your lifestyle. Asking something like “What style will still look good if I don’t spend 30 minutes on it every morning?” can change the entire direction of your consultation—and your life, honestly. (Not to be too dramatic but this is your hair we’re talking about!) 

How to communicate with your stylist for the best results

Honesty is important. “Be truthful about your routine,” says Arrojo. “If you air-dry, avoid hot tools or only visit the salon three times a year, say so.”

He also recommends being clear about where you want the length to fall, because “a trim” and “shoulder-length” mean genuinely different things to different people.

Hair history is the other piece stylists desperately need and clients regularly hide. “If you’ve used box color, had extensions, used a keratin treatment or done anything chemically to your hair, tell your stylist,” shares Dieda. “That information completely changes how we approach your service.” 

Dean says also to be clear about your hard no’s. “Nothing makes us feel worse than having a client leave not completely satisfied,” he explains.

Here, the stylists reveal common mistakes made at the salon and how to avoid them.

1. Being vague and expecting telepathy

“Short,” “layered,” “natural”—these words mean something different to every person in every chair. Arrojo sees this regularly and says reference photos narrow the gap between what you’re picturing and what ends up on your head.

2. Expecting to look exactly like a celebrity reference

Different texture, density, extensions and professional styling are doing a lot work in that photo. Cavalcante recommends using inspiration images as references, not guarantees.

3. Pretending you’ll style more than you will

Every stylist has cut hair for someone who claimed to blow-dry daily and actually air-dries always. The cut looks great in the salon and then becomes a situation at home. Ask how the haircut behaves when air-dried and how it grows out between appointments.

4. Coming in when you’re short on time

“Coming on a day where you know you are short on time puts added stress on the stylist to complete the service in a shorter time slot than they had planned for,” Dean tells Parade. Book when you can actually be present.

5. Staying quiet when something feels off

“I’d rather know so if there is anything we need to correct we can correct it in this moment,” Ashley says. Speaking up during a haircut is not being difficult—it is the entire point of having a consultation and a conversation.

The whole world is mourning the loss of Dolly Parton.

It was announced on Tuesday morning that the beloved country singer and actress passed away, and since then, thousands of tributes and stories from fans, musicians and actors have been pouring in. Parton was 80 years old.

One of them was from Ben Stiller, who met Parton in the 1980s while he was a cast member on Saturday Night Live. The actor and filmmaker was a featured player and writer on NBC’s late-night variety sketch show for four episodes in 1989, during the show’s 14th season.

In an X post written on Tuesday afternoon, Stiller shared with his followers the only time he met the “Coat of Many Colors” singer. Parton was a host and musical guest on April 15, 1989, the 17th episode of SNL‘s 14th season. Every Wednesday when there’s a show on Saturday, SNL has a read-through, where the cast, writers, host, and crew gather to read roughly 40 potential sketches aloud. In his tribute, Stiller revealed that his sketch “bombed” during the table read, but she “was so kind about it.”

I “wrote a sketch for her and me that bombed at readthrough, and she totally sold it as it bombed and was so kind about it,” Stiller wrote. “I never met her again, but always wanted to thank her for being so cool and making me and everyone feel special.”

Dubbed the “Queen of Country”, Parton spent her decades-long career impacting multiple generations of fans and artists with her music, films, shows, musicals, books, non-profits and businesses. She wrote her first song when she was just six years old, and released her debut album, Hello, I’m Dolly, at 21. On top of the 50 studio albums she has released in her lifetime, Parton also collaborated with multiple artists, including Sabrina Carpenter, Beyoncé, Pitbull, Miley Cyrus, Kenny Rogers, Emmylou Harris, Post Malone and more. “Love love love how it fits perfectly under the kitchen sink,” a second shopper raved. “I love that you can also take it out to clean,” highlighting the drawers’ removable design and everyday easy access.

Dolly Parton first took the Grand Ole Opry stage at the young age of 13 on July 25, 1959, performing with her uncle Bill Owens. 

Known as the birthplace of some of the most famous country legends, Parton officially became a member of the Opry on January 4, 1969. She later said of the Nashville institution, “They call it the ‘Mother Church,’ because the old Ryman was a church, but it’s sacred to me, wherever it goes—the church of my heart. For me, the Opry is like the song ‘New York, New York,’ if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere.”

After her passing on August 25 at the age of 80, the Grand Ole Opry posted a loving tribute to the legendary performer, writing on Instagram, “It is with the heaviest of hearts that we say goodbye to a true country music icon, Opry member Dolly Parton.”

The post continues, “There is no doubt Dolly’s mark on the world, and on us here at the Grand Ole Opry, will be deeply felt for generations to come. She taught us to always lead with kindness, generosity, and compassion. May her legacy live on through her songs, the lives she touched, and the countless artists she inspired. There will never, ever be another one like her.”

Fans responded to the post with their own memories, honoring the late great queen of country. “No matter who you are, I think she held a place in everyone’s heart,” wrote one commenter. 

Others added, “We lost another national treasure”, “Dolly has a dream and it came true ten fold! She was and is a superstar! She was filled with kindness and love! She will live on in our hearts forever!” and, “A singer, songwriter, entertainer, actress, and humanitarian. There will never be another like her…Thank you for the memories.” 

Parton’s first performance at the Grand Ole Opry earned her three encores. Her last time on the stage was during her 50th anniversary celebration in 2019. 

In January of 2026, the Opry held its fourth annual “Opry Goes Dolly” show to celebrate her 80th birthday. Country stars including Vince Gill and Lainey Wilson appeared, but Parton did not. 

In a video message to her fans, the singer said, “I wish I could be there in person, but I’ll be sending you all my love.” At the time, fans shared their well wishes via the Opry’s Instagram post (of Parton’s message), with sweet sentiments such as, “Happy birthday Dolly you are my favorite country singer,” and  “Beautiful, beautiful Dolly Parton. Love you. Enjoy your birthday.”

As a child, nothing tasted quite as gourmet to me as a bowl of canned pasta, especially if it came with meatballs. Over the years, I outgrew my love for mini pasta rings in fun shapes and graduated to boxed pasta, but the sight of this food in the grocery store has always sparked nostalgic memories.

When I first met my husband, it was endearing to see that he still loved two canned pasta brands, and they’ve been a regular staple in our house ever since. So when Parade asked me to do a taste test of several popular canned pastas, I knew it’d be a fun assignment.

Chef Boyardee and SpaghettiOs have always been my husband’s go-tos, and they’re arguably the most well-known canned pasta brands on the market. But there are also a few other brands that make canned pasta, including some generic store brands.

With the help of my husband, I set off to test nine different canned pastas from a variety of brands. We were curious to see if any of the other brands we tasted could measure up to the sense of nostalgia Chef Boyardee and SpaghettiOs offer, and we were pleasantly surprised by several of them. How did the experiment go? Read on to hear our honest thoughts.

How I Chose the Canned Pastas

When it comes to canned pasta, Chef Boyardee and SpaghettiOs are the two most established brands on the market. But they’ve definitely got some competition—for example, Annie’s also has several varieties, and both Walmart and Aldi have their own canned pastas as well.

Since Chef Boyardee has the most extensive collection, I included four different canned pastas. Annie’s has three varieties, but two of them are quite similar, so I included only two from the brand. Then, I featured a can from SpaghettiOs, Aldi and Walmart.

Methodology: How I Tested Them

Typically, you can cook canned pasta one of two ways: in the microwave or on the stovetop. My husband always heats them up in the microwave, so I figured if that method was good enough for him, it’d work well for me too.

I poured each can into a bowl then microwaved it in 30-second intervals, cooking each for a total of one minute and 30 seconds. Then, I let them cool before tasting them.

I judged each canned pasta on the taste and texture of the pasta, the flavor of the sauce and the consistency of the meatballs (if applicable).

9 Canned Pastas, Ranked Worst To Best

Here’s my ranking of these nine popular canned pasta options.

9. Walmart Great Value Pasta Rings & Meatballs in Tomato Sauce, $1.08

How the brand describes it: “This delicious dinner or hearty snack, consisting of round pasta rings, tender meatballs, and rich, savory tomato sauce, has been a favorite of kids for decades. The perfectly al dente pasta rings result in less mess than long, slippery spaghetti noodles, and the meal is ready in less than 5 minutes,” the website reads.

My experience: Out of all the canned pastas I tested, this one’s savory sauce was the most bland. In terms of flavor, it needed more salt or seasoning to jazz it up a bit. However, the pasta’s texture was nice and soft. The meatballs are made of a mixture of beef, pork and breadcrumbs. Similar to the other pastas, they are equal parts soft and firm.

Nothing about this canned pasta particularly impressed me. It wasn’t bad, but it didn’t have the flavor I expect from other canned pastas.

8. Aldi Bon Italia Pasta Rings with Meatballs in Tomato Sauce, $1.09

How the brand describes it: Aldi’s website doesn’t list a specific product description for this canned pasta. However, the can describes the product as featuring pasta rings and meatballs in a tomato sauce. The meatballs are made of a mixture of beef, pork, water and breadcrumbs.

My experience: One of the first things I noticed about Aldi’s Bon Italia Pasta Rings with Meatballs was how easy it was to pour into a bowl. From watching my husband cook SpaghettiOs and certain varieties of Chef Boyardee regularly, I’ve noticed that he often has to spoon some of the remaining product out of the can. But this was a clean pour.

Compared to SpaghettiOs, the flavors in Aldi’s canned pasta were a bit more muted. The sauce is slightly sweet, like SpaghettiOs, but the pasta rings were slightly softer than SpaghettiOs. The Aldi meatballs were a bit softer than SpaghettiOs meatballs, which are a bit firmer.

If you grew up eating SpaghettiOs, you’ll notice the subtle differences in flavor and will probably prefer the real deal. However, if you aren’t partial to SpaghettiOs, it’s a solid alternative.

7. Annie’s Organic Cheesy Ravioli in Tomato and Cheese Sauce, $2.48

How the brand describes it: “Certified USDA Organic and non-GMO, this Annie’s canned food is made with cheese from cows raised without antibiotics or synthetic hormones, so you can feel good about serving it to the whole family. And like all Annie’s organic food, it’s made with goodness. That means no artificial flavors or synthetic colors,” the website reads.

My experience: On the Annie’s website, cheese ravioli is the lowest-rated canned pasta, so I wasn’t sure what to expect before trying it. However, I was instantly impressed with how soft the raviolis were. My husband, who swears by Chef Boyardee’s Beef Raviolis but doesn’t like the brand’s Cheese Raviolis, was also happy with the pasta’s soft texture.

The cheese inside the raviolis was very subtle and not overwhelming. The sauce is slightly tangy, but tasty. However, I did wish that it had a bit more seasoning.

6. Annie’s Organic Bernie O’s, $2.49

How the brand describes it: “Annie’s Organic Bernie O’s are delicious and tons of fun to eat. This canned pasta meal addition is non-GMO and made with certified USDA Organic pasta in a savory tomato and cheese sauce full of scrumptious flavor. There are no artificial flavors or synthetic colors,” the product description reads.

My experience: While pouring this canned pasta into a bowl to heat it up, the contents dropped right out, with no scooping involved. The cute bunny shapes are so fun and they’re ultra soft.

The sauce has a slight sweetness to it, but it’s not overwhelming, and it’s quite good. Similar to many canned pastas, the sauce is slightly watery, but there’s a nice balance of sauce and pasta to make up for it. Since there’s a generous amount of pasta, the can is definitely filling.

This particular canned pasta is certified USDA organic, with no artificial flavors or synthetic colors. While eating it, you definitely feel cleaner, like you’re eating a high quality product.

5. Chef Boyardee Mini ABC’s and 123’s with Meatballs, $1.19

How the brand describes it: “These Mini ABC’s and 123’s are more than just a meal; they are an interactive dining experience for children and a quick, reliable solution for busy parents. Each 15 oz. can is packed with tender alphabet and number-shaped pasta, paired with savory, bite-sized meatballs crafted from a blend of pork, chicken, and beef,” the product description reads.

My experience: Similar to several other canned pastas I tested, this one offers up pint-sized pasta with meatballs. The pasta is shaped like numbers and letters, making it fun for kids, and it’s very soft.

The sauce is slightly sweet, but pleasantly so. The bite-sized meatballs are soft, but have a nice bite to them, and they’re seasoned well.

4. Chef Boyardee Mini Pasta Shells & Meatballs, $1.50 (originally $1.73)

How the brand describes it: “Enriched pasta in a hearty tomato sauce and mini meatballs made from beef, chicken, and pork give Chef Boyardee Mini Pasta Shells and Meatballs the timeless flavor that everyone loves,” the product description reads.

My experience: I’ve always loved mini pasta shells. In fact, I regularly make baked ziti, but with mini pasta shells. For a canned pasta, this is pretty good. The pasta is very soft and the savory sauce is flavorful. It also smells good.

The meatballs are a nice addition, and they’re seasoned well. Overall, it felt like a satisfying “adult” version of a canned pasta.

3. SpaghettiOs Super Mario Bros Canned Pasta with Meatballs, $1.69

How the brand describes it: “Each delicious bite of this canned pasta with meatballs features Super Mario pasta shapes to add some fun to lunchtime. This canned pasta puts a yummy spin on original SpaghettiOs with the addition of savory meatballs, making it a delicious part of any meal. One cup of SpaghettiOs with meatballs contains 1/2 cup of vegetables, as well as 9 grams of protein as part of a lunch,” the product description reads.

My experience: Out of all the canned pastas I tested, this one’s sauce was the sweetest, but in a pleasant way, kind of like when you have a pizza with a slightly sweet sauce. My husband is a huge Mario fan so he loved the fun pasta shapes, which were soft and chewy. The meatballs are made of a mixture of chicken, beef and bread crumbs, and they’re soft and well-seasoned.

The portion is filling and I love that the brand often offers fun collaborations with different popular characters like Mario. It’s perfect for picky kids!

2. Chef Boyardee Beefaroni, $0.98 (originally $1.34)

How the brand describes it: “Made with enriched pasta smothered in rich, Italian-flavored tomato and meat pasta sauce, this canned food has the timeless flavor everyone loves,” the product description reads.

My experience: When poured out of the can, most of the pasta comes right out, but you do need to scoop a little bit out. The meat sauce gives this canned pasta a great flavor profile. The sauce is thick and features small pieces of meat throughout. Typically, I like a more heavy-handed meat sauce, but it’s great if you don’t want a ton of meat.

The thick, tubed pasta is soft but has more of a bite to it than the spaghetti that took our number one spot below. There’s also no twirling required, so it’s a great, hearty alternative if you’re looking for something similar to the number one spot but without extra effort.

How the brand describes it: “Made with enriched pasta noodles, rich, Italian-flavored tomato sauce, and tasty meatballs made with pork, chicken and beef, this canned food has the timeless flavor everyone loves,” the product description reads.

My experience: It’s been a few decades since I dug into a can of Chef Boyardee Spaghetti & Meatballs, but the minute I caught a whiff of it, I felt like a kid again. The sauce is a bit thicker than the other cans I tested, and it has a nice savory flavor with a kick of tangy seasoning.

The meatballs are perfectly seasoned and soft. They’re also more filling than the smaller meatballs in some Chef Boyardee varieties. The noodles were just like I remembered them: soft, filling and full of flavor. There’s also a generous amount of them in the can.

Chef Boyardee Spaghetti & Meatballs gave me a welcome dose of nostalgia, but it also felt like the most filling option for adults, hence why it earned the number one spot on this list.

Iron Maiden‘s 1983 album, Piece of Mind, featured several of the band’s most memorable hits, including “The Trooper,” “Where Eagles Dare,” and “Flight of Icarus.” The album concludes with its ninth song, “To Tame a Land,” written by bassist Steve Harris.

Loudwire reported that Harris used Frank Herbert‘s Dune, published in 1965, as a source of inspiration while penning the 7-minute and 28-second song. In a 1983 interview with Metal Attack Magazine, Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson confirmed that the band had planned on titling the tune “Dune.” When the publication asked, “Is it true that you had problems with Frank Herbert, the author of Dune, because of the song ‘To Tame A Land’ on the new album,” he responded, “That’s right.”

“We first wanted to call the song ‘Dune’, like the book, but he threatened to have the album banned. It’s stupid because he’d already sold us the right at a very high price. Anyway, we stayed true to the book. If he only knew how successful the album is, and what publicity this could have been for him,” said Dickinson while speaking to Metal Attack Magazine.

According to Loudwire, Harris, who also penned “The Trooper” and “Quest for Fire,” shared his appreciation for Piece of Mind, the band’s fourth album, in an interview for the 2001 Iron Maiden biography, Run to the Hills: The Authorised Biography of Iron Maiden by Mick Wall.

“Piece of Mind was just special. We felt like we were on a high, and you can hear that mood on the album. Most of all though, it was just the songs. Between us, I thought we’d really come up with the goods this time,” said Harris to Wall, as reported by Loudwire.

Iron Maiden Fans Shared Their Thoughts About ‘To Tame a Land’

In a 2022 Reddit post uploaded on the Iron Maiden subreddit, fans of the British metal band shared their appreciation for “To Tame a Land.” The original poster started off the conversation by writing, “Dune (To Tame a Land) is an absolute masterpiece. It’s such a good song and deserves the same respect as Hallowed and Fear of the Dark imo”

Several Reddit users took to the post’s comments section to share their thoughts about the 1983 song.

“Indeed i really don’t know why many people don’t love the song it’s so great,” wrote a fan.

“I think it needs an extra verse closer to the end, but it’s still my favorite on Piece of Mind and in my top 15, so no argument here,” added a fan.

“I think it’s incredibly underrated,” shared another.

“No argument from me. TTAL is my #1 Maiden song. Absolute masterpiece,” commented a social media user.

“I’m always surprised by the amount of people I see who say they don’t like To Tame a Land or Still Life. Those are some of the best Maiden songs period, to me anyways,” chimed in a fifth Iron Maiden listener.

Eminem and Dolly Parton never met, but one unexpected message from the country legend stayed with him.

Following news of Parton’s death at age 80 on Tuesday, August 25, the rapper posted a screenshot on Instagram of a note she sent him after they were both inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.

In the message, Parton congratulated Eminem (whose real name is Marshall Mathers) on his induction and praised his performance. Despite admitting she didn’t “know a lot about rap music,” she told him she had learned he was “the very best at it.”

Parton also revealed that she had always felt connected to the rapper. “I hope what I have to say will not seem weird or strange to you but I have always felt some unexplained connection to you like I know you somehow,” she penned.

She had hoped they could meet during the ceremony. That meeting, unfortunately, never happened. “I had hoped to meet you at the show but you know how nuts those things are, personally I hate ’em and I missed my chance,” she said.

“I’m sorry we never got a chance to meet, but getting this note from Dolly really had a an impact on me,” Eminem wrote in the caption alongside the screenshot. “She definitely didn’t have to take the time to do it.”

He added that Parton’s influence reached him despite their very different musical worlds. “Even for a kid who mostly listened to rap music, she was an icon. A superstar in every sense,” he continued. “Rest easy Dolly. And thank you for the kind words.”

The two music legends were part of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s 2022 class, alongside Lionel Richie, Duran Duran, Carly Simon, Eurythmics, and Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo. Eminem performed a career-spanning set during the November ceremony before being inducted by Dr. Dre.

Parton’s death was announced by her nephew on August 25. The news followed months of concern surrounding the singer’s health and came just days after she revealed she was still recovering from unspecified health issues.
