Sandra Bullock Plays Matchmaker for Hoda Kotb, Tells Mystery Plane Seatmate to 'Call Her'

Wed, 09/09/2026 - 4:09pm

Usually, it’s the celebrity being researched before an interview — but Sandra Bullock flipped the script this week, revealing she’d done some digging of her own.

Bullock appeared alongside Nicole Kidman on Tuesday, Sept. 8’s episode of Today’s Making Space With Hoda Kotb to promote their new film, Practical Magic 2. Bullock, 62, surprised host Kotb, also 62, by bringing up a detail from her Aug. 21 appearance on Today With Jenna & Sheinelle.

“You were in 3C, and there was a 3D,” Bullock recalled. “And then there was a little conversation and then a little sparklet? Like, what happened?”

Kotb, clearly caught off guard, burst out laughing before explaining. She said she’d been on a flight seated next to a stranger who opened up to her about a rough patch he was going through.

“So I was on a plane, and I sat next to some guy, and he just said to me, ‘Oh God, I’m just having a hard time,'” she recalled. “And I’m thinking, ‘Who is this guy?’ I don’t know. And he’s some AI guy who’s super… whatever.”

“Handsome, super handsome?” Bullock jumped in.

Kidman, 59, turned to Bullock in disbelief. “How do you know this?”

“I watched the segment,” The Lost City star said simply.

Kotb went on to share more of what her seatmate had told her. “He literally said, ‘I can’t sleep, I saw this image, and it really stuck with me,'” she said, explaining that he’d shown her a photo of a young boy overseas in Africa living in poverty.

“And he said, ‘I couldn’t sleep, so I started sending money and things there, and I realized, what the hell am I doing?'” Kotb continued, recounting his words. “‘We have like, one ride around the sun, what am I doing with my life?'”

She then repeated a detail from her original interview — that the two had exchanged phone numbers before crossing paths again later. At that point, Bullock asked which camera was pointed at Kotb, found it, and mouthed “Call her” and “Hot,” gesturing toward her.

Kotb laughed so hard she teared up, calling it “my favorite interview ever.”

Nicolas Cage Hit With Massive Sinkhole in Front of His Malibu Mansion

Wed, 09/09/2026 - 4:06pm

Hurricane Marie has brought severe weather to Southern California, affecting the coast’s infrastructure, including the Malibu property of Hollywood star Nicolas Cage.

According to KTLA5, a sinkhole swallowed up the driveway of the Spider-Man Noir actor’s Pacific Coast Highway-adjacent home. It was so deep, measuring at least the size of a two-story house, that Malibu declared a state of emergency in the Lechuza Beach area where Cage resides. The impact has cut off safe access for residents and emergency crews as the damage extends about 30 feet wide by 60 feet long and 25 to 30 feet deep, based on the city’s local emergency proclamation.

Here’s a look at the massive road catastrophe on KTLA5’s Instagram:

View this post on Instagram

The report placed the cause of the disaster, which has led to homes being ordered to evacuate or red-tagged and gas being cut off, as the result of weather conditions that Hurricane Marie has created in Southern California. The usual dry heat of the desert has seen an unusual change, as the hurricane’s effects raised temperatures to not just three-digit peaks but also came along with dangerous spots of humidity throughout the state that are more Miami, Florida than Malibu, California.

Unfortunately, the combination of moisture and the pressure of the pounding surf undermined the driveway’s infrastructure, as Cage’s home and driveway were built above the beach bluffs.

Since Tuesday’s incident, the Labor Day weekend heatwave conditions have continued to contribute to coastal erosion. The extent of the damage remains to be seen, as Malibu officials are monitoring the ongoing repercussions that the rain, high surf, and moisture will have on their jurisdiction. Cage has not released a statement on the matter as of publication. The actor was also recently in the news due to the cancellation of his Marvel Universe show Spider-Man Noir.

They come in black leather in sizes 5 to 12, with select half sizes and wide widths available.

These slip-resistant flats feature a genuine leather upper, mesh lining, a flexible synthetic rubber sole, and a cushioned footbed for extra comfort. The cushioned footbed and flexible rubber outsole make these a practical pick for days when you’ll be doing more walking, while the gathered back helps keep the heel in place without straps or laces. Just be sure to save them for dry fall days, since the leather flats aren’t water-resistant.

“They are so beautiful,” one reviewer wrote, while another described the shoes as “very comfy.” A third person was especially impressed by the structure of the heel, writing, “The gather at the heels ensures that the shoes do not slip off,” adding, “These are the best fitting flats I have ever purchased!”

Their low price is especially worth pointing out since the same Loreleigh Ave style is listed for $60 elsewhere, making Amazon’s current $49 price $11 lower and 43% below the original $85 price. Clarks is also a long-established footwear brand known for comfort-focused shoes, so finding one of its genuine leather styles for under $50 makes this deal even more compelling than buying another inexpensive pair of flats.

Eggo Is Teaming Up With Netflix’s ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ for Its First-Ever Film-Inspired Collaboration

Wed, 09/09/2026 - 3:05pm

Netflix’s Oscar-winning animated film “KPop Demon Hunters” has been streaming on the platform since summer 2025, and now the global phenomenon is making its way into the grocery freezer aisle.

Eggo is making mornings a little more “Golden” with its first-ever film-inspired collaboration. The frozen waffle brand is teaming up with Netflix’s global phenomenon “KPop Demon Hunters” to launch limited-edition Eggo x KPop Demon Hunters Golden Brown Sugar Cinnamon Waffles.

What to Know About Eggo’s New ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Waffles

Inspired by the film’s hit song “Golden,” the limited-edition waffles have an extra-golden color that’s been crafted from “natural sources,” according to the HUNTR/X-emblazoned box. In addition to eight brown sugar cinnamon waffles in every package, “KPop Demon Hunters” fans will find themselves making heart eyes over the box, which features Rumi, Mira, and Zoey in concert-ready attire and has each character’s autograph right on the front.

The Waffles Are Inspired by Korean Hotteok

But these frozen breakfast treats are more than just “Golden.” Inspired by hotteok, a beloved Korean street food and sweet pancake famous for its warm cinnamon filling, the flavor profile is a chance for Eggo to bring a bit of globally-inspired flavor to its waffles. In fact, hotteok is featured so prominently in “KPop Demon Hunters” that the sweet pancake appears in the Netflix Tudum Food Guide. When you see Rumi, Mira, and Zoey chowing down on Korean street food backstage before a show, there’s usually a delicious plate of hotteok on the table.

And, while toaster-ready frozen waffles are certainly no substitute for hotteok made by a street vendor and filled with a warm, syrupy mixture often made with brown sugar, cinnamon, and nuts or seeds, the brown sugar cinnamon flavoring of the waffles would be perfect for everything from a “KPop Demon Hunters”-themed brunch to a snack stuffed with your favorite sweet waffle toppings while you watch the film.

“We’re thrilled to collaborate with Netflix’s hit global phenomenon ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ to launch a new Eggo waffle flavor that will give our fans a delicious way to make mornings more golden,” Cara Tragseiler, a growth and marketing lead at Eggo, said in the press release. “We’re always looking for ways to bring unexpected, flavorful fun to breakfast through our limited-time offerings. By bringing the globally-inspired flavors of hotteok to our waffles, we’re helping consumers to celebrate the film and culture it was inspired by.”

Where to Find Eggo’s ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Waffles

The good news for fans is that the breakfast brand says the golden-hued waffles will be readily available. The limited-edition waffles are rolling out at major grocery retailers now and have a suggested retail price of around $3.69 per box, according to Eggo.

1974 No. 1 Hit, Covered by Glen Campbell, Was Written on a Ski Lift

Wed, 09/09/2026 - 2:53pm

In 1974, country singer John Denver topped the charts with a hit track that he penned as a dedication to his then-wife.

“Annie’s Song,” released in June 1974 as the lead single from Denver’s eighth studio album Back Home Again, famously pays tribute to the hitmaker’s first wife, Annie Martell. According to reports, the couple divorced in 1982 following strains from his rising career and infidelities.

Martell, who said that she cried when her ex-husband played the tune to her, explained the unconventional way that the song was written.

“It was written after John and I had gone through a pretty intense time together and things were pretty good for us. He left to go skiing and he got on the Ajax chair on Aspen Mountain and the song just came to him,” she said, per Nine.com.au. “He skied down and came home and wrote it down… Initially it was a love song and it was given to me through him, and yet for him it became a bit like a prayer.”

Reports often state that it took Denver only ten minutes to pen the chart-dominating track. The song soared to the top of the charts almost as fast as it was written, hitting No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it remained for two consecutive weeks. “Annie’s Song” also proved to be a chart success in the U.K., hitting No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart — his only No. 1 hit across the pond.

The hit song has been a source of inspiration for many other musicians, with several well-known artists putting their own spin on it.

Country music legend Glen Campbell would frequently cover the song during his concerts, particularly during performances in London.

In 2009, Dutch conductor and violinist André Rieu released his own rendition of the beloved song.

Beloved CBS Reality Show Celebrates 25 Years With More Than 1 Million Miles Traveled

Wed, 09/09/2026 - 2:39pm

The Amazing Race has officially reached a milestone that would have been difficult to predict when Phil Keoghan sent 11 teams racing away from a New York City starting line 25 years ago.

The CBS reality competition began its journey on Sept. 5, 2001, joining Survivor and Big Brother during the network’s early push into reality competition television.

Standing beneath gray skies, Keoghan gave 22 contestants their final instructions before they began a race through nine countries for a $1 million prize. “The world is waiting for you. I want to wish all of you the best of luck. Travel safe,” Keoghan told them. He then raised his eyebrow and delivered one word that would become synonymous with the series: “Go!”

That first starting line launched one of CBS’ longest-running reality competitions.

Over 38 completed seasons, The Amazing Race has sent contestants more than 1 million competition miles across 39 countries. The series has also collected 15 Primetime Emmy Awards while continuing through major changes in both reality television and the broader TV industry.

Keoghan has remained at the center of the American edition since the beginning.

Speaking with Parade in 2024, the longtime host offered a straightforward explanation for why he believes the series has connected with viewers for so long.

“I love that our show is the show that people say nice things about,” Keoghan said.

When The Amazing Race arrived in 2001, CBS was still learning whether its new reality competition shows had staying power. Survivor had premiered in May 2000 with strangers attempting to outwit and outlast one another in a remote location. Big Brother followed in July 2000, putting a group of strangers together in a house while they competed for a cash prize.

The Amazing Race gave the network a third format, this time sending pairs of contestants around the world. Along the way, the series also created one of reality television’s most recognizable starting-line traditions.

“The world is waiting for you. Good luck. Travel safe. Go!” became Keoghan’s familiar send-off, typically accompanied by his signature eyebrow raise before contestants sprint toward their first clue.

Twenty-five years after he first sent racers on their way, Keoghan is preparing to do it again.

The Amazing Race returns for season 39 with a two-night premiere on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.

People Born in September Were Sent Here With a Spiritual Life Purpose

Wed, 09/09/2026 - 2:35pm

Were you born in September? Your birth month may play a role in your divine life purpose, according to astrologers and numerologists.

Discovering your life purpose is one of the most profound questions you can ask yourself. It’s deeply personal—no two paths are identical. But astrology and numerology offer powerful frameworks for understanding the unique gifts and calling that might be woven into your life story.

If you were born in September, you’re part of a group shaped by two of the zodiac’s most purposeful signs: Virgo and Libra. Combined with the numerological power of the number 9, September births carry a distinctive cosmic blueprint—one that points toward a life of service, wisdom, and meaningful transformation.

Understanding what astrology and numerology reveal about your purpose can help you recognize the gifts you already have and align your choices with your deeper calling.

LEARN MORE: 4 Key Personality Traits of People Born in September

September’s Numerological Meaning

September is the ninth month of the year, and in numerology, 9 holds profound significance. It’s the number of completion, wisdom, and spiritual maturation.

The number 9 is associated with:

  • Wisdom and insight — the ability to see patterns others miss
  • Compassion and healing — a natural inclination to ease others’ suffering
  • Spiritual evolution — a drive toward personal growth that ripples outward
  • Breaking cycles — the courage to challenge inherited patterns and generational trauma
  • Universal service — a calling that extends beyond your immediate circle

For people born in September, this means your life purpose often involves turning your hardest lessons into knowledge and healing gifts for others. You’re meant to learn, grow, and then generously share what you’ve discovered. Think of yourself as a translator of difficult experiences. You’re someone who can take what you’ve survived or overcome and transform it into wisdom that helps humanity evolve.

What Astrology Says About September Births Virgo: August 23–September 22

Most September births fall under Virgo, the sign ruled by Mercury, the planet of intellect and communication. Virgos aren’t just thinkers; they’re editors and fixers. You’re wired to notice what’s broken, inefficient, or out of alignment, and you can’t help but imagine how to improve it. This isn’t criticism for its own sake; it’s a genuine gift.

Virgo’s life purpose centers on mastery through service. You’re called to develop real expertise in your field, then use that knowledge to elevate those around you. Whether it’s refining a system, healing a wound, or teaching someone a skill, your purpose is to turn observation into action and make tangible improvements. Virgos excel in roles where precision matters—medicine, education, editing, wellness, mentoring—because they understand that excellence isn’t about perfection; it’s about caring enough to get it right.

Your deepest gift? Grounded wisdom. While other signs might get lost in abstraction, Virgo brings spiritual and personal growth down to earth. You make the intangible practical.

Libra: September 23–October 22

Those born in the final days of September step into Libra energy, ruled by Venus, the planet of relationships and values. Where Virgo refines systems, Libra refines human connection. You’re the peacemaker, the bridge-builder, the one who can see every side of a conflict and find the common ground.

Libra’s life purpose involves creating balance and advocating for fairness. Your gift isn’t just diplomacy. It’s the ability to make people feel heard and valued. You understand that harmony doesn’t mean everyone agrees; it means everyone is respected. Your purpose might involve bringing people together, creating beauty or ease in spaces, or standing up for what’s right when others stay silent. Libras are naturally drawn to justice, and the world needs people who refuse to accept injustice as inevitable.

Virgo or Libra, this birth month embodies powerful alchemy: using your gifts—whether analytical, relational, or creative—to improve the world around you. You’re not here to coast or play small. You’re destined to notice what needs fixing, care enough to do something about it, and bring people along on the journey.

September-Birth’s Purpose

September-borns often possess an active, discerning mind. You notice what’s broken, inefficient, or out of balance, and you immediately start problem-solving. Your observational skills are sharp enough to spot a flaw in a system, relationship, or situation that others walk past every day. Where many people think that’s just how it is, you envision how it could be better.

But here’s the nuance: your gift comes with a learning curve. Not every observation needs to be shared, and not every problem is yours to fix. Part of your life purpose involves learning discernment. Your intuition knows when to speak up and when to let others find their own way. This is especially true in relationships and close circles, where well-intentioned advice can sometimes enmesh you in someone else’s drama or undermine their own growth.

The key to fulfilling your purpose is channeling your insights into avenues where they’re genuinely welcomed: mentoring, teaching, writing, healing professions, or any field where your expertise directly improves people’s lives. When you align your natural problem-solving with a clear role or responsibility, your life becomes deeply fulfilling.

A.J. Brown has two children. His daughter from a previous relationship, Jersee, was born during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic in May 2020. In an interview with NFL Total Access, Brown mentioned being at home to care for his baby girl as a silver lining. However, like many new parents, he added, “I’m not getting any sleep. But it will definitely be worth it.”

Brown got his namesake on Sept. 29, 2022, when Riley gave birth to the couple’s son, A.J. Brown, Jr. With the season gearing up, he didn’t have the same downtime as he did during those early pandemic days. However, Brown seems to have found balance.

“When I go home, I’m a father,” he said in a 2022 interview. “When I’m in the building, I’m working. Once the kids go to bed, I do what I need to do to get ready for the game.”

Parade aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

More than three decades after Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas first introduced audiences to Halloween Town in 1993, the stop-motion film has become a cult classic. For superfans, watching it every October is only the beginning. Collecting decor featuring Jack, Sally, Zero, and the rest of the crew has become a way to keep the movie’s wonderfully weird world alive long after the credits roll.

Just in time to add something new to the collection this spooky season, the LEGO Disney Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas Building Set is currently 20% off at Walmart. The build lets fans revisit Halloween Town brick by brick, making it part activity and part display-worthy collectible. Put it together during a movie marathon or over a chilly fall weekend, then proudly display the finished creation alongside pumpkins and other spooky decor once the final brick clicks into place.

With 2,193 pieces, this build recreates all of Halloween Town, not just one recognizable scene. The finished diorama connects three locations from the movie: Spiral Hill and its surrounding graveyard, Jack Skellington’s tall, crooked house, and Halloween Town Hall. Spiral Hill curls dramatically in front of a large yellow moon, with tombstones, pumpkins, and Zero gliding around the graveyard below. Jack’s gray-and-black house rises over the center of the display with its steeply pitched roof, off-kilter chimney, gated front steps, and glowing-looking yellow window details.

On the other side, Town Hall stands with festive orange-and-black bunting, a clock above the entrance, and the green bubbling fountain out front. Even the landscaping appears pulled from the movie, thanks to twisted black trees, an orange-leaved tree, crooked fencing, and plenty of tiny jack-o’-lanterns.

Just as many Easter eggs are tucked inside the buildings. Jack’s house has a removable roof, revealing an interior that includes the chalkboard where he works through his formula for understanding Christmas, while Town Hall features the lectern where Jack presents his findings about the mysterious holiday to Halloween Town. The set even includes the movie’s wonderfully bizarre walking bathtub, giving Lock, Shock, and Barrel their own little vehicle. In total, there are eight characters to arrange throughout the display: minifigures of Jack Skellington, Sally, Santa Claus, Lock, Shock, and Barrel, plus Zero and a brick-built, two-faced Mayor.

Jack’s house measures more than 10.5 inches high, and the connected model spans about 20 inches wide and 10.5 inches deep, giving those tiny details room to stand out on a mantel or bookshelf. The box includes building instructions, or builders can use the LEGO Builder app for 3D viewing tools while working through all 2,193 pieces.

Superfans called this “spooky,” “fun-to-build” set a “must-have,” saying the set’s “attention to detail is spot on,” featuring “so many fun things from the movie.” One shopper wrote, “This set is stunning in its design. The detailing and shape of the buildings are fabulous.”

It then expanded further by launching the Carbone Fine Food at-home line of pasta sauces in 2021, from spicy vodka to bolognese. And now, it’s innovating yet again, this time in a completely new direction. Carbone Italian Chili Crisp is the brand’s first foray into condiments, bringing two classic Carbone flavor profiles to grocery stores.

Calabrian Chili Crisp and Aglio e Peperoncino are made with 100% olive oil and a blend of peppers, onions, and garlic to give an extra pop of flavor to a variety of dishes, from grilled meats to pizza, and of course, pasta. The Calabrian flavor is made with red bell pepper for a “bold, front-of-the-tongue heat balanced by signature crunch, richness and subtle sweetness,” while the aglio e peperoncino is made with “green bell pepper, hot pepper, onion, garlic and parsley for a crisp, vegetal flavor with just enough zest and crunch.”

“Our goal with Carbone Fine Food has always been to make people feel like they can bring a little bit of the restaurant home with them,” said co-founder Mario Carbone in a statement. “With the Italian Chili Crisp, we’re giving people another way to do that.  A hero product that can make a meal feel special.”

Sharon Osbourne Battles to Oust Ozzy's Accountant as Executor of His Will

Wed, 09/09/2026 - 2:23pm

More than a year after Ozzy Osbourne’s death at the age of 76, the iconic rocker’s wife, Sharon Osbourne, is asking for his longtime accountant, Colin Newman, to be removed as the executor of his will.

According to The Sun, Osbourne filed papers with the British High Court earlier this week. The Black Sabbath frontman’s other two executors, his niece, Georgina Maszlin, and his assistant, Melinda Varga, were also part of the claim against Newman.

Newman has a long history with the Osbournes. The accountant worked for Ozzy over the course of four-plus decades. Prior to quitting in April, the accountant was a director of Ozzy’s UK firm, Monowise, Ltd. The late musician’s wife was appointed director last December.

As of now, there is no information on why Sharon and the other two executors have made this request or whether Newman has responded.

Reportedly, Ozzy Osbourne was worth $220 million at the time of his death. Per Radar Online, Ozzy left the couple’s estates to his wife Sharon. The rest of his fortune would reportedly go to his six children. He shares Aimee, Kelly, and Jack with Sharon, and Jessica and Louis with his first wife, Thelma Riley. He was also father to Elliot, his ex-wife’s son from a previous relationship.

Along with the money he made from album sales, years of performing, and his popular reality series, the metal legend also raised a record-breaking $190 million with Black Sabbath during the July 5, 2025 “Back to the Beginning” concert. The proceeds from the show went to the Birmingham Children’s Hospital, Acord Children’s Hospice, and Cure Parkinson’s.

Parkinson’s research was near and dear to Osbourne. He was diagnosed with a rare genetic form of the disease, known as PRKN 2, in 2003, but did not reveal the news publicly until 2020. During an interview with ABC News that same year, Osbourne shared, “I’m no good with secrets. I cannot walk around with it anymore, ‘cause it’s like I’m running out of excuses, you know?”

Less than a month after his passing, People revealed Ozzy’s official cause of death was listed as “out of hospital cardiac arrest” and “acute myocardial infarction” with “joint causes” including coronary artery disease and Parkinson’s disease with autonomic dysfunction.

This Premium Airline Is Bringing the Spa Day to the Skies with Custom Scents, Korean Skincare, and Quiet Cabins

Wed, 09/09/2026 - 2:23pm

Anyone who has ever stepped off a 14-hour flight knows the feeling all too well: dry skin, strained neck, exhaustion from blaring intercom announcements, and that distinct, stale cabin air. While airlines have spent years competing over bigger television screens and lie-flat seat dimensions, the physical toll of long-haul travel has remained an unavoidable tax on vacationers.

Etihad Airways is officially trying to change that.

The national carrier of the UAE has unveiled Etihad Wellbeing, a comprehensive overhaul designed to treat long-haul flying less like endurance travel and more like an elevated wellness retreat. Rather than tossing a disposable eyemask into a pouch and calling it a day, the airline is introducing sensory upgrades that follow travelers from the lounge to the aircraft cabin.

Perhaps the most intriguing addition to the passenger experience is in the air itself. Etihad is introducing a bespoke signature scent crafted exclusively for the airline, diffused across its airport lounges and onboard its aircraft. The idea? Create an immediate, calming sense of place that replaces standard airport odors with a spa-like aromatic atmosphere designed to settle travel anxiety before takeoff.

Cult-Favorite Skincare at Cruising Altitude

In-flight hydration is getting a serious upgrade through a brand-new airline first. Etihad has partnered with cult-favorite Korean beauty brand LANEIGE—marking the first time the viral skincare line has officially taken to the skies.

Passengers flying in Business Class will receive amenity kits stocked with LANEIGE staples, including its moisture-recharging Water Sleeping Mask, nourishing hand cream, and the internet-famous Lip Sleeping Mask (an absolute lifesaver against punishing cabin air). Travelers in First Class and The Residence receive bespoke luxury skincare from British spa brand ESPA, paired with revitalizing under-eye patches and targeted facial masks.

The “Quiet Cabin” and Sleep Sanctuaries

Beyond skincare and scents, the airline is tackling one of the most frustrating sleep disruptors in aviation: constant intercom interruptions.

Under its new Quiet Cabin initiative, flight crews will significantly reduce non-essential public announcements during flight, preserving uninterrupted rest cycles. Paired with guided meditation, in-flight stretching routines, and specialized sleep programming available on seatback screens, the environment is engineered to help travelers actually switch off.

For those in premium cabins, the sleep setup resembles a boutique hotel room: natural cotton linens, pressure-relieving memory-foam mattresses, designer loungewear, and circadian-friendly cabin lighting that gently mirrors sunset and sunrise phases to combat jet lag.

Fueling Up on Electrolytes and Whole Foods

The wellness approach also extends to the galley. The airline is rolling out protein-rich, plant-forward dining menus alongside customized specialty dishes designed for easy digestion at altitude. To help passengers avoid the dreaded post-flight dehydration slump, beverage carts are being stocked with vitamin-infused elixirs and targeted electrolyte blends.

For travelers who dread the physical hangover of long-haul flights, Etihad’s latest push proves that the future of premium flying isn’t just about extra legroom—it’s about landing feeling like a human being.

1964 Rock Hit, Performed by The Kinks, Among ‘Greatest Songs of the 1960s’

Wed, 09/09/2026 - 2:10pm

The Kinks remain one of the biggest rock bands to come out of the 1960s, but like anyone else, it took them a bit before they finally made their breakthrough. For the popular band, they finally really hit their stride when they released the 1964 hit “You Really Got Me.”

The song was released as the band’s third official single, and the first from their debut album, Kinks. Written by band member Ray Davies, the song feels like a fun ode to a sweet young love, with a heavy beat and lively vocals that make the song easy to groove to.

The straightforward lyrics include lines like, “Girl, you really got me now/ You got me so I can’t sleep at night/ Yeah, you really got me now/ You got me so I don’t know what I’m doin’, now.”

“You Really Got Me” was a huge hit when it first came out. In the U.K., the Kinks’ home country, the song peaked at No. 1 on Record Retailer and Melody Maker, which tracked music releases at the time. It also reached No. 7 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

Other countries where the single charted included Australia, Canada, France, Sweden, and Ireland, along with a few others.

But one thing the band might not’ve predicted when they recorded the song was its longevity and strong legacy as a rock classic. Over 60 years after it was released, the song is still a popular track and often included on lists of the 100 Greatest Songs of the 1960s or similar collections.

Pitchfork ranked the song at No. 88 on its list of “The 200 Best Songs of the 1960s.” As for why it was picked, the publication called the track “fearsome and ferocious” and noted its “everlasting theme of unrequited teenage lust.” It also preferred the original above the similarly popular Van Halen cover, which came out in 1978 and peaked at No. 36 on the Billboard Hot 100.

When you listen to “You Really Got Me,” with its undeniable beat and relatable lyrics, it’s really no surprise that it has endured so long and is still seen as a true hit.

American Eagle's Sleek Olive Trench Coat Is the Fall Staple Your Closet Needs

Wed, 09/09/2026 - 2:05pm

Is there anything more chic than a great trench coat? That’s a rhetorical question. Because while, yes, a great pair of shoes or an exquisitely tailored little black dress is also extremely chic, when the weather turns toward fall crispness, I become obsessed with the classic trench.

A trench coat is that rare combination of practical and stylish, with the innate ability to outlast any fashion trend. Sure, its roots are utilitarian (the coat was originally designed as functional outerwear), but that belted waist and those timeless neutral colors give it a polished look that doesn’t really belong to any one era. You can throw one over jeans and sneakers or wear it with trousers and loafers, and somehow it always looks put together. Trends come and go, but a trench has a way of making an outfit feel sophisticated.

AE77 Premium Dolman Trench Coat, $119.20 (originally $298) at American Eagle Outfitters

American Eagle Outfitters

Shop It!

That was a really long-winded way of letting you know I’m obsessed with American Eagle’s AE77 Premium Dolman Trench Coat. It’s a really relaxed, fashion-forward spin on the classic trench that still feels refined. This version is meant to be oversized, with its dolman sleeves giving it a softer feel. With that in mind, when you order it, stick to your true size. While other trenches are cut in a more fitted way, this one is designed to be roomier, so if you size up, it’s liable to be too big. What I love is that this extra room lets you easily layer the trench over your favorite sweater without it feeling bulky.

The olive colorway is just as rich in person as it looks online, bringing in one of those autumnal hues you’ve been waiting all summer to wear. American Eagle’s Dolman Trench is long, hitting just above my ankles (I’m 5’6, for what it’s worth), so depending on the length you’re looking for, a trip to the tailor for a quick hem might be in order.

If you don’t want to take my word for the quality here, just look at American Eagle shopper reviews.

“My first trench coat and I love it,” writes a customer. “I got a medium in this and would not go any larger. I would recommend sizing down if anything as it is meant to be so oversized. Material feels nice, the coat is almost heavy!”

With the trench now marked down to more than 50 percent off, sizes are going fast, so order yours before they’re gone.

1979 Hit, Ranked Among 'Greatest Classic Rock Songs,' Was Inspired by a Lousy Band at London Pub

Wed, 09/09/2026 - 2:00pm

Dire Straits, the iconic British rock band fronted by Mark Knopfler, delivered the 1979 hit “Sultans of Swing,” which not only became their defining anthem but also earned a place among the “100 Greatest Classic Rock Songs” in music history.

Amazon Music released a rundown of curated playlists that highlight the most influential, legendary and enduring tracks that continue to resonate decades after their release.

From the golden era of rock music, spanning from the 1960s to the 1980s, the list includes Bob Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone,” The Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” and The Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun” in the top three spots.

As for Dire Straits, “Sultans of Swing” came in at No. 44 on the list of “Greatest Classic Rock Songs” of all time.

Dire Straits members John Illsley, David Knopfler, Pick Withers, Mark Knopfler in Amsterdam, Netherlands in 1978.

Gijsbert Hanekroot/Redferns

Officially released in 1978 in the U.K. as a standalone single, the song was included on the band’s self-titled album that same year before being released in the U.S. in January 1979.

“Sultans of Swing” peaked at No. 8 on the U.K. Singles Chart and No. 4 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100in 1979, making it the band’s first Top 10 hit.

Before their breakthrough, Mark Knopfler found himself creating what is now their signature song after stepping into a nearly empty pub in London on a rainy night and hearing a mediocre jazz band play.

Dire Straits’ lead singer and guitarist was struck by an unexpected contrast after hearing the band introduce themselves at the end of their set.

Goodnight and thank you. We are the Sultans of Swing,” a member said.

At that time, the grand-sounding name paired with the jazz band’s uninspiring performance inspired Knopfler to create the song’s narrative lyrics.

He later shared it with his bandmates, bassist John Illsley, drummer Pick Withers and guitarist David Knopfler, who is also Mark’s younger brother.

“The first time I heard Mark playing a version of Sultans of Swing was in that flat, but the song was completely different,” Illsley shared, as cited by Louder.

At that time, Mark Knopfler felt that something was missing from the song and that it needed an extra spark to bring it to life. That was when he added a deep, soulful blues groove that gave the song its distinctive sound.

“One day he said to me: ‘Remember that song I was fiddling about with the other day? I’ve completely redone the chord structure,’” Illsley recalled. “He played it, and it sounded pretty good. The whole thing is incredibly simple; it’s the playing that makes it intriguing. It’s that rolling rhythm on the guitar and a very simple bass and drums approach. Then, of course, it’s a story. And let’s face it, all good songs have a story.”

The thing that made the song stand out was Mark Knopfler’s no-pick technique, as he played the entire song with his fingers to create its crisp tone.

No Flight, No Boarding Pass, No Problem: TSA’s New Perk Lets You Enter the Airport Anyway

Wed, 09/09/2026 - 1:51pm

If you’ve ever had to say goodbye to a loved one at the security checkpoint instead of walking them all the way to their gate, or wanted to meet a friend who has a long layover but not quite enough time to exit the airport, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) just introduced a new perk that could change the airport experience.

TSA has launched Gateside by TSA PreCheck, a new program that allows eligible TSA PreCheck members to enter the secure side of participating airports even when they aren’t flying. The program is free, but you’ll need to apply ahead of time and receive approval before heading to the airport.

The program is designed to bring back some of the airport traditions that largely disappeared after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, when access to secure airport areas became much more restricted. Now, approved visitors can once again accompany family members to their gates, meet up with someone during a layover, or greet arriving passengers right off the plane.

TSA says Gateside visitors can also take advantage of restaurants, shops, and other amenities located beyond the security checkpoint—or simply spend some time watching planes from the terminal.

How Gateside by TSA PreCheck works

There is a little preparation involved. Eligible TSA PreCheck members need to apply online at least one day before—and no more than three days in advance of—your planned airport visit and provide your Known Traveler Number.

Once you apply, you’ll need to check your approval status via the online portal before proceeding to the airport to ensure your pass is valid—and that your status has not changed.

If approved, the Gateside pass is valid for one calendar day, and visitors can re-enter the secure area that day. You’ll need to bring an acceptable form of identification, such as a REAL ID or passport. If you don’t have one, you can verify your identity using TSA ConfirmID for a $45 fee.

From there, you’ll go through TSA screening just like a ticketed passenger. You should use a TSA PreCheck screening lane (you cannot use TSA PreCheck Touchless ID lanes for this particularprogram). If the TSA PreCheck lanes are closed, however, you may be directed to a standard screening lane.

Which airports offer Gateside?

The program is initially available at 13 U.S. airports, including some major hubs:

  • Mesa Gateway Airport (AZA) in Arizona
  • John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH) in Ohio
  • Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) in Texas
  • Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) in Michigan
  • Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport (ICT) in Kansas
  • Indianapolis International Airport (IND) in Indiana
  • Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) in Nevada
  • Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in California
  • Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport (LIT) in Arkansas
  • Will Rogers International Airport (OKC) in Oklahoma
  • Eppley Airfield (OMA) in Nebraska
  • San Diego International Airport (SAN) in California
  • Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) in Utah

TSA says the program will expand to additional airports in the coming months.
