Seattle’s famous Pike Place Market Gum Wall was stripped of more than 2,350 pounds of chewing gum in November 2015, but the clean bricks did not stay bare for long. 

Workers spent an estimated 130 hours removing the sticky buildup from the wall in Post Alley, per the Seattle Times. By the following day, visitors were already sticking fresh gum onto the bricks, bringing the unusual tourist attraction back to life.

The major cleanup marked the first time in 20 years that the wall had been cleared of gum. According to a news release from the Pike Place Market Preservation & Development Authority, workers filled 94 buckets with the discarded gum during the cleaning process.

The gum was set to be thrown away, while the historic brick wall received a fresh start. However, visitors quickly began adding new pieces, showing how firmly the strange Seattle landmark had become part of the city’s tourist scene.

The return of the gum started almost immediately after the cleanup. A flash mob gathered in Post Alley and began covering parts of the wall again. 

The Gum Wall stands in Post Alley, beneath Pike Place Market, beside the Market Theater box office. The brick wall measures about eight feet high and 54 feet long. Over the years, visitors covered its surface with chewed gum in many colors, creating a thick layer across the bricks and mortar.

The unusual tradition began in the early 1990s, when people waiting in line for shows at the Market Theater started sticking gum on the wall. According to Emmanuel Tsouris, one person pressed a penny into a piece of gum while waiting to enter a performance. Other people followed, and the practice grew.

By the end of 1995, the wall was covered with gum and coins. Someone later removed the coins, leaving the gum behind. Visitors continued adding more pieces even after the money disappeared.

Pike Place Market officials initially tried to stop the buildup because the gum covered the historic brickwork. The market had the wall cleaned more than once, but the gum kept coming back. By 1998, the wall had filled up again for a third time, and officials stopped trying to prevent the practice.

The 2015 cleanup was different in scale. Workers used high-pressure steam and hot water to remove the hardened gum. The effort was meant to protect the old bricks from the thick buildup, which officials feared could harm the wall’s condition.

The cleaning also gave visitors a rare chance to see the bricks without their colorful covering. People came to take pictures before the work began, while others visited after hearing that the wall would briefly look different from the landmark they knew.

Visitors kept bringing gum to the alley, pressing it onto the bricks and taking photographs of their contributions.

Pike Place Market officials had expected the practice to resume. Emily Crawford, then the market’s director of communications and marketing, described the wall as a shared work of public art. 

In a statement about the cleanup, she said, according to The Guardian, “We expect the gum wall will live on – it’s a Seattle tradition and a crowd-sourced piece of public art that people really enjoy,” Crawford said. “But it’s time to start with a clean canvas.”

The wall’s popularity also brought concerns about cleanliness. In 2009, TripAdvisor ranked the Gum Wall as the second-germiest tourist attraction in the world, behind Ireland’s Blarney Stone, which visitors kiss.

Despite its reputation, the attraction continued to draw people who wanted to see it in person. Some visitors bought gum nearby specifically to add their own pieces. Others used the wall as a backdrop for selfies or created names, symbols and small designs with different colors.

For Pike Place Market, the repeated cycle of cleaning and rebuilding became part of the wall’s story. Removing the gum helped protect the historic bricks, but the public’s continued interest made it difficult to keep the surface clean.

The 2015 effort ultimately proved that even a major cleanup could not end the tradition. After 20 years of gum buildup, workers removed more than a ton of sticky waste in 130 hours. Yet within a day, visitors were already adding new pieces.

The Gum Wall’s return was a reminder of how a small act by people waiting in a theater line had grown into one of Seattle’s most unusual tourist attractions.

In 1997, Indiana rock band Days of the New released a song that would become one of the biggest rock radio hits of the decade. Nearly 25 years later, Billboard named “Touch, Peel and Stand” the No. 1 song on its Greatest of All Time Mainstream Rock Songs ranking.

The Days of the New hit topped some formidable competition on Billboard’s list. Stone Temple Pilots’ “Interstate Love Song” came in at No. 2, followed by U2’s “Mysterious Ways” at No. 3, Nickelback’s “How You Remind Me” at No. 4 and Creed’s “Higher” at No. 5.

But the seemingly surprising No. 1 makes considerably more sense when looking back at just how dominant “Touch, Peel and Stand” was on rock radio.

Released as the lead single from Days of the New’s self-titled debut album, “Touch, Peel and Stand” reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and stayed there for a then-record 16 weeks. It also reached No. 6 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart. Billboard ultimately ranked it No. 1 on its all-time Mainstream Rock list.

Billboard’s Greatest of All Time rankings reflect historical performance on the corresponding charts rather than simply serving as an editorial list of critics’ favorite songs. That makes a song’s chart position and longevity important to its placement, helping explain how “Touch, Peel and Stand” ended up ahead of decades of rock hits.

Days of the New’s breakthrough debut album also produced the rock hits “The Down Town” and “Shelf in the Room.” The album went platinum in the United States, while the band’s distinctive acoustic-heavy sound helped separate it from much of the late-’90s rock landscape.

Days of the New was initially made up of singer and guitarist Travis Meeks, guitarist Todd Whitener, bassist Jesse Vest and drummer Matt Taul. The original lineup didn’t last long, with Whitener, Vest and Taul eventually going on to form Tantric while Meeks continued recording under the Days of the New name.

But “Touch, Peel and Stand” remained the band’s signature hit—and decades after its remarkable 16-week run at No. 1, its chart performance was enough to put it atop Billboard’s ranking of the biggest Mainstream Rock songs of all time.

Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday faced murder charges after a deadly 30-second gunfight in Tombstone, Arizona Territory, on Oct. 26, 1881, but a 30-day preliminary hearing ended with a judge ruling that the men had acted lawfully in their duties as law officers.

The famous showdown, commonly known as the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, killed three men: Billy Clanton, Frank McLaury and Tom McLaury. The shooting involved four men on the lawmen’s side and five members of a group known as the Cowboys, although two of the Cowboys fled as the gunfire began.

The case drew strong public attention because the defendants included Wyatt Earp, his brothers Virgil and Morgan, and their close friend Doc Holliday. The hearing examined whether the men had used their weapons legally or had committed murder.

According to Grunge, on Nov. 30, 1881, Judge Wells Spicer concluded that the evidence did not support sending the defendants to a murder trial. A grand jury later upheld the decision on Dec. 16, clearing the way for the men to be released from the case.

The ruling became a major part of the story behind one of the most famous gunfights in American Old West history. However, it did not end the bitter conflict between the Earp family and the Cowboys.

The events began with a long-running dispute between the Earp brothers and members of the Cowboys, a loose group linked to cattle theft, horse stealing and other crimes in the region.

At the time, Tombstone was a fast-growing mining town in Arizona Territory. The discovery of silver had attracted workers, business owners and people hoping to make money. The town’s rapid growth also brought disputes over local power, law enforcement and criminal activity.

Virgil Earp served as Tombstone’s town marshal and as a deputy U.S. marshal. He was responsible for enforcing a local law that prohibited people from carrying firearms within the town without proper permission.

On Oct. 26, 1881, Virgil went with his brothers Wyatt and Morgan and Doc Holliday to confront five Cowboys: Ike Clanton, Billy Clanton, Billy Claiborne, Frank McLaury and Tom McLaury.

The confrontation took place in a narrow lot near C. S. Fly’s photography studio, not inside the O.K. Corral itself. The location later became closely linked to the famous name of the shootout.

As the confrontation turned violent, Ike Clanton and Billy Claiborne ran away. The others became involved in a gun battle that lasted about 30 seconds. Around 30 shots were fired during the brief exchange.

Billy Clanton and the McLaury brothers died. Virgil and Morgan Earp suffered serious wounds, while Holliday was grazed on the hip. Wyatt escaped without a physical injury.

The two sides later gave different accounts of what happened. The Earps maintained that they were carrying out their duties and defending themselves after the Cowboys refused to surrender their weapons. 

Supporters of the Cowboys argued that the men had not resisted and were shot without justification.

Those conflicting claims became central to the legal hearing that followed.

Two days after the shooting, a coroner’s inquest found that the Earps and Holliday had killed the three men. On the following day, Ike Clanton filed murder charges against them.

Judge Wells Spicer began the preliminary hearing on Oct.  31, 1881. The purpose was to decide whether enough evidence existed to send the defendants to a murder trial.

Wyatt Earp and Holliday were arrested and held without bail while the hearing took place. Virgil and Morgan were still recovering from their gunshot wounds.

The case was difficult because witnesses disagreed about how the shooting began. The prosecution relied heavily on Ike Clanton, who had survived the confrontation. However, his testimony contained contradictions that weakened the case against the defendants.

Wyatt Earp also testified during the hearing. He explained that he drew his pistol after seeing Billy Clanton and Frank McLaury draw their weapons.

“The first two shots were fired by Billy Clanton and myself… I do not know which shot was fired first… The fight then became general,” Wyatt Earp said, according to Legal Talk Network.

Earp’s account supported the defense’s claim that the gunfight developed during an attempt to enforce the law rather than through an unlawful attack.

Judge Spicer considered the testimony and the circumstances surrounding the confrontation. On Nov. 30, he concluded that the defendants had been justified in using deadly force while carrying out their official duties.

In his ruling, Spicer stated: “I cannot resist the conclusion that the defendants were fully justified in committing these homicides — that it was a necessary act done in the discharge of an official duty…”

He also found that the evidence was not strong enough to justify sending the men to a jury for a murder trial. The defendants were ordered released, and a grand jury upheld Spicer’s decision on Dec. 16.

The outcome meant Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday would not face a murder trial over the three deaths. However, the decision did not settle every question about who fired first or whether each action during the shootout was justified.

The legal decision did not bring peace to Tombstone. The conflict between the Earps and the Cowboys continued, leading to more violence in the months that followed.

On Dec. 28, 1881, Virgil Earp was attacked in an ambush and suffered injuries that left his left arm permanently damaged. Morgan Earp was killed on March 18, 1882, when an attacker fired through a window while he was inside a saloon playing billiards.

Wyatt believed the attacks were connected to the Cowboys and sought revenge. He later pursued men he suspected of being involved in the violence against his brothers, bringing further bloodshed to the region.

These events added to the lasting story of Wyatt Earp, whose life became closely tied to the law, personal revenge and the violent struggles of the American frontier.

Although the 1881 hearing cleared Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday of the murder charges arising from the O.K. Corral gunfight, the story continued to grow long after the court proceedings ended.

Wyatt Earp died in Los Angeles in 1929 at the age of 80. His fame grew further after his death, especially following the publication of Stuart N. Lake’s 1931 biography, Wyatt Earp: Frontier Marshal. The book helped inspire later Western films and other accounts of the Old West, although it also presented an idealized version of Earp’s life.

Russ Giguere turns 83 today. Giguere joined a folk-rock group called The Men in 1964, which grew out of Hootenanny Night at the Troubadour in West Hollywood. He was also working as a light and sound technician at the Ice House, where he coordinated hootenanny nights. Six members of that group formed The Association, and Giguere became an integral part of its sound for six years.

He sang lead on some of its biggest songs. He says the vocal on “Windy” was entirely his, and he asked newcomer Larry Ramos to co-sing the lead. He and Terry Kirkman shared the leads on “Cherish.” Three of the group’s songs made BMI’s list of the 100 most-played songs of the 20th century, with “Never My Love” at No. 2 and “Cherish” at No. 22, according to The Second Disc.

The band’s real impact, Giguere says, was on the concert circuit. Asked in an interview with Harvey Kubernik whether the group helped open venues to rock acts, he said yes. Promoters were afraid to book rock ’n’ roll, he said, citing Chicago, and the band set a record previously held by The Kingston Trio. He credited manager Pat Colecchio and booking agent David Geffen with putting the group in places rock had never been.

Bandmate Jim Yester said in a 2008 interview that the group “opened the door for other bands that previously never got booked.” The Second Disc says the Association brought a younger audience to venues like The Copa, The Cocoanut Grove, Ravinia and Tanglewood.

The group also opened the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, according to photographer Henry Diltz. At the Fillmore in San Francisco in 1966, Giguere recalled, the band walked on in suits among hippie acts, and the crowd set up rows of chairs in front.

Not everyone calls them a rock band. Bernie Leadon of the Eagles said the group came out of the folk era and was more of a pop vocal group than a rock band. Giguere sees it differently, saying the group was everything, including rock ’n’ roll, blues, folk and harmonies.

Twenty years ago, Taylor Swift was a teenage country singer with curly blonde hair, a guitar and a song named after Tim McGraw. On October 24, 2006, she released her self-titled debut album, beginning a career that would eventually make her one of the biggest stars in music.

Next Saturday, that album turns 20. And while Swift has spent the past two decades reinventing her sound and image, fans are still waiting for news about one of her earliest projects: Taylor Swift (Taylor’s Version).

The original album introduced listeners to songs including “Tim McGraw,” “Teardrops on My Guitar,” “Our Song” and “Picture to Burn.” Its country sound and teenage storytelling were a long way from the elaborate pop productions that would come later, but many of the themes that shaped Swift’s career were already there.

The anniversary has taken on additional significance because Swift revealed in May 2025 that she had already finished rerecording her entire debut album. In a letter to fans announcing that she had regained ownership of her original recordings, the singer said she loved how the new version sounded but stopped short of announcing a release date.

Céline Dion‘s heart will go on in the City of Lights.

The Grammy-winning icon, 58, closed out her run of her performances Saturday, October 17, with her 16th sold-out show at Paris’ Plenitude Arena. But the show must go on, according to her breaking announcement.

Over the last five weeks, more than 500,000 fans from around the world reportedly filled the arena, with crowds in excess of 32,000 each night. With this run, Dion has sold more tickets than any artist in the history of Plenitude Arena, according to a news release from Saturday.

But then came the big news on Saturday, when the Canadian singer revealed that more concerts are coming to Paris in 2027.

“This beautiful adventure finishes tonight. But we’ll meet again next May,” she said. “In the meantime, believe in yourselves and hold on to your dreams!”
