Wheel of Fortune announcer Jim Thornton was suspended by Sony Pictures Television Studios on September 1, 2026.

While the exact reason for his suspension was not revealed, TMZ reports that Thornton was involved in an incident on a commercial flight in May 2026 after a passenger complained to a flight attendant about the TV personality.

Thornton has been on Wheel of Fortune since 2011, when he replaced longtime announcer Charlie O’Donnell. Along with the ABC game show, Thornton’s professional credits include The Price Is Right and Monsters, Inc., where he voiced a commercial narrator.

In real life, Thornton is also a proud husband and father. In an anniversary Facebook post to his wife, Sue, he gushed about their marriage, writing, “Happy Anniversary to my beautiful Sue, who changed my world by saying, ‘I do.’ The years have flown by, but oh, what a run. Since that sunny Spring day in 1991. I love you always.”

Thorton also has a son named Sam, and he actively supports the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation since his son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2009.

According to his ABC bio, the family lives in Los Angeles, and the couple has a passion for “old houses” and is currently working on a renovation project together.

“Their current project is his family’s historic Federal-era home on the banks of the Ohio River,” the bio reads. “The old brick building served as the local post office and is believed to have been a stop on the Underground Railroad prior to the Civil War. The couple hopes to preserve it for future generations to appreciate.”

The studio did not share a possible return date for Thornton, but said they would be “recasting while we conduct a thorough investigation.”

After he was hired as the announcer for Wheel of Fortune 15 years ago, Thornton shared his excitement.

“This has been a lifelong dream, and to be able to follow in the footsteps of a legend like Charlie O’Donnell is truly humbling,” he said. “Being selected as announcer for Wheel of Fortune is a huge honor. Now I just have to make sure I don’t call out the answers to the puzzles when my mic is open!”

Pete Davidson donated $20,000 to benefit research on a rare disease after meeting a young fan with the genetic disorder.

Last week, while working on the film Tommy Karate in Brooklyn, the 32-year-old met Liam, an aspiring comedian with 5p- syndrome, also known as Cri du Chat syndrome (“cry of the cat” in French). The rare chromosomal disorder occurs when a piece of the short arm (p arm) of chromosome 5 is missing. According to the Cleveland Clinic, it can result in physical symptoms like low-set ears, a small head, and a round face, as well as trouble with speech and language, heart defects, and intellectual disabilities.

The Cri du Chat Research Foundation thanked the Saturday Night Live alum for his generous donation on Facebook. They included a photo of Davidson with Liam and his mother. The post was captioned, “A heartfelt thank you to actor, writer, comedian, and native New Yorker, Pete Davidson, for taking the time to learn about 5p- syndrome (Cri du Chat syndrome), meet our Liam the Lion, and show him so much love.”

“Pete, your genuine willingness to listen, learn, and shine a light on this rare and profound disorder means more to us than we can put into words,” the post added. “And your generous donation to the Cri du Chat Research Foundation will help advance critical research and drug development for 5p-. We are incredibly grateful.”

The Foundation shared that “Hundreds of millions of people live with rare diseases,” but many don’t receive treatment “for the underlying cause.”

The caption concluded by thanking the actor, “Thank you Pete for using your platform and public figure status to shine a light on a rare disease community that so often goes unseen—and helping us create meaningful change for those living with 5p- syndrome.”

The Psychology of ‘Faking It’ (And Why It Causes Burnout)

“My recent survey of 1,457 full-time employees on workplace authenticity uncovered a surprising paradox about how we navigate self-expression on the job,” Dr. Hewlin tells Parade. “I found that nearly 80% of workers endorse a balanced approach, actively managing authenticity alongside conformity, which reflects the middle self mindset. Yet many of them (45%) reported that they still regularly construct facades of conformity, leading to emotional exhaustion.”

However, this burnout can be avoided with certain tools.

“These findings demonstrate that most individuals do not lack the right mindset—they lack the daily behavioral strategies needed to put the mindset into practice,” she continues. “That is why I wrote Staying True to You. In my book I offer a practical playbook for protecting your mental health, personal integrity and agency at work without resorting to overconforming or weaponizing authenticity.”

As Dr. Hewlin has previously shared with Parade, “Organizational leaders must note that when employees feel forced to create facades, they are far more likely to quit. By understanding this dynamic, we can begin to address mental health and reduce burnout within and outside of the workplace.”

Redefining Professionalism: How To Bring Your Authentic Self to Work

Dr. Hewlin reveals a few research-backed recommendations for how to bring your authentic self to work.

Intentionally analyze and reprioritize your values

“I recommend that people ‘back into’ their true values,” she explains. “Instead of picking ideals off a list, look at where you actually invest your time and energy. Someone might say that they value family, but the calendar shows 60-hour workweeks that give little room for family time. Another example is checking off collaboration while only trusting one’s work and taking on work from team members to make sure it is ‘right.’ Being truthful with ourselves will help us understand what really matters and help us identify roles that better align with our values.”

The key is being honest, and looking at patterns of behavior.

“Examining real behavior also prevents people from relying on aspirational values, which are values they want to hold but aren’t actively living them out,” she continues. “When we claim aspirational values as core values, it creates an impossible standard that leaves us feeling fake.”

Identify your conformity thresholds

Dr. Hewlin says, “Ask yourself: How much conformity can I really tolerate? Your threshold is the limit where adapting to workplace expectations stops feeling like a reasonable compromise and starts violating your core values. Reviewing and placing boundaries based on your conformity threshold will help you make intentional rather than fear-based choices.”

Evaluate value alignment

“Before accepting a job, evaluate value alignment: Observe cultural cues during interviews to ensure a company’s true environment won’t force you past your threshold,” Dr. Hewlin suggests.

She gives an example:

“Let’s consider Adebisi’s experience,” she says. “He is an award-winning engineer facing two job offers. The first was a high-status leadership role managing a department, with more money but little room for being creative in his passion for architectural design. The second was a Senior Engineer role focused entirely on architectural design. By auditing his values, Adebisi recognized his core priority was mastering his craft, not holding power. He also knew his conformity threshold: taking the leadership role would pressure him to create facades of conformity to fit in with the leadership team. So, he declined the management offer and recommended a colleague whose core value was power and who wanted a leadership role.”

6 Things Everyone Should Know About Workplace Culture

Here are six things Dr. Hewlin wishes more people understood about workplace culture and its impact on employees:

1. “Encouraging employees to bring their ‘whole selves’ without addressing baked-in organizational preferences for certain forms of authenticity including how employees express their emotions, political preferences, how they wear their hair, and more creates chaos and forces employees to navigate exhausting facades.
2. When employees feel forced to suppress their true values and create ‘facades of conformity,’ it leads to emotional exhaustion, reduced work engagement and a higher likelihood of quitting.
3. Leaders and people whose values and backgrounds aligned with those of the majority possess authenticity privilege due to their power and status; they often mistakenly assume that because being authentic is easy for them, it is equally easy for their employees.
4. Biases around race, gender and culture heavily impact how emotional expression and authenticity are perceived, putting women, people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals and minority viewpoints at greater risk.
5. Authenticity is relational and it requires responsibility if we want to do it well. For employees to thrive, leaders must exercise restraint in their own self-expression to make space for others.
6. Authenticity needs to be discussed more among leaders and employees, identifying what it looks like within the work environment in order to avoid toxic forms, bias or authenticity that disrespects and harms others.”

2 Surprising Takeaways from Workplace Authenticity Research

In the decades that Dr. Hewlin has been studying authenticity, she tells Parade there are two takeaways, in particular, that tend to surprise people the most.

1. Age often makes a difference

“People have been surprised by the finding that in job-insecure environments, older workers tend to be more authentic than younger workers,” Dr. Hewlin explains. “This often surprises people because the common perception is that younger workers are generally more vocal, however, in a professional setting, younger employees are still learning how to navigate their careers and are therefore more likely to create facades of conformity. In contrast, older workers focus more on legacy and authentic relationships.”

2. Leaders can impact employees in an unexpected way

“Another surprising finding from my research with Professors Tracy Dumas and Meredith Burnett is that leader integrity can actually influence high levels of facades when employees feel a clash between their values and the organization’s,” she shares. “Having a leader with high integrity doesn’t make them drop their masks. Instead, out of respect for the principled leader, they feel even greater pressure to suppress their true views and fake alignment to fit in.”

If you’re signed up for the Daisy Chain Field‘s updates, you probably received an email with the exciting ticket news. The email includes links for the U.S., Canada, Germany, the U.K., and Spain. If you didn’t receive it, click on this link to go to your country’s Ticketmaster site, where you’ll enter a queue.

Silver Star Tickets will cost $25/€25/£25 or your local currency, plus taxes. The tickets come in pairs, and each person who enters the queue can buy only two tickets.

Entering the queue doesn’t guarantee that you’ll get tickets to the show you choose, as tickets are limited; it’s just a request. Fans have until 11:59 PM ET on Wed., Sept. 2 to request tickets. Those who receive concert tickets will be notified by the following week: Wed., Sept. 9.

Those who live in Sweden, the Netherlands, France, or Italy will have a slightly different process. After choosing their country, they’ll sign up to receive a private link. When tickets go on sale on Wed., Sept. 9 at 12 PM local time, they can follow the link to access the Silver Star Ticket sale.

So let’s say you receive an email by Sept. 9 telling you that you got tickets. Congratulations! Unfortunately, you won’t learn if you’re sitting in a seat in the lower or upper level, on the floor or in the pit, or if you have a limited view, until the day of the show, when you pick up your tickets at the box office. It’s totally random.

Whether or not you land a golden ticket, one thing’s for sure: Rodrigo really is trying to keep her concerts accessible for fans who can’t afford, or can’t snag, the pricier seats. So if you haven’t entered the queue yet, don’t wait. The clock is ticking until Wednesday’s deadline.

Whether it’s on the screen or on the stage, actress and singer Zooey Deschanel has continuously brought joy to her audiences. In an exclusive interview with Parade magazine, Deschanel opened up about one big thing that brings her joy in her own life: Zumba.

Right before speaking to Parade, Deschanel attended a Zumba class at Anaheim’s Zin Academy in celebration of the aerobic workout’s 25th anniversary. She told Parade that the August 29 class, which included 1,000 Zumba-enthusiasts, “was so much fun.”

“They asked me to come, and I was like, ‘I would have taken a Zumba class anyway!’ I love it so much, it was so fun,” said Deschanel.

Deschanel also shared that the “energy was incredible.”

“Like very electric. Everyone was wearing bright colors. It was so fun. And everyone’s happy,” said Deschanel with a laugh.

Deschanel also explained that she’s a fan of Zumba, created by Beto Pérez, because it’s “a really fun dance class” and it’s offered in many spaces.

“I think dance is so joyous and I have so much fun dancing. And to find a brand that infuses dance into fitness where it is a really great cardio workout, but it is, you know, a joyous dance party too. So it’s like a workout that you look forward to doing, not something that you dread. It’s like, ‘Oh, I can’t wait to do that!’ It’s so much fun,” said Deschanel.

In addition, she said she recommends the workout class because “it’s a no-judgment zone.”

“Whether you’re like a dancer or if you’ve never danced before, I think if you enjoy music, and connecting with other people, and you want to get in a good workout. You don’t have to be a great dancer to do it. You just have to like listening to music and kind of having a great, fun party atmosphere on a random hour, any day of the week,” said Deschanel while speaking to Parade.

During her interview with Parade, Deschanel teased some of her upcoming projects. She noted her band, She & Him, which also includes M. Ward, is starting their Pump Up the Volumes tour with a Chicago show on September 20.

“I’m going on tour with my band She & Him, and I can’t wait for that,” said Deschanel.

In addition, she shared that she’s starring alongside comedian Caleb Hearon in the upcoming film, Trash Mountain, which is premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 11.

“I’m really excited about it. It’s a beautiful film,” said Deschanel.

Fans of the hit Fox comedy, New Girl, which had a seven-season run until 2018, will be pleased to know that Deschanel and her co-stars, which include Lamorne Morris, Hannah Simone, Max Greenfield, Jake Johnson, and Damon Wayans Jr., will be reuniting during the charity gala, Chrysalis Butterfly Ball. The event will be hosted by Greenfield and held on October 10.

While the New Girl cast usually doesn’t appear all together for public events, Deschanel told Parade that she’s regularly in touch with her former co-stars.

“I’ve seen everyone individually, a lot. I actually see everybody a lot, but not all together, so I’m stoked. And that’s going to be really fun,” said Deschanel of the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball reunion.

She also shared that some of her most memorable on-set moments occurred while playing Jessica “Jess” Day on the sitcom.

“New Girl‘s memorable just because it was so, so much of my life. And they were like my family,” said Deschanel.

In addition, she pointed to starring in the films Almost Famous (2000), (500) Days of Summer (2009), and Elf (2003), as being quite memorable. She said that Almost Famous was “pretty amazing for [her]” because it marked a “big break for [her]” in Hollywood, and she got to share scenes with Frances McDormand, who played her on-screen mother. She also said she “had so much fun” filming (500) Days of Summer, as she “had such a great rapport” with her co-star, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and the film’s director, Marc Webb.

While Deschanel has enjoyed her acting career, she shared that she is most proud of her work as a songwriter, vocalist, and musician for She & Him.

“I love that people have also come to discover my music that I’ve written and covered it and everything,” said Deschanel. “And I feel like that to me is probably my greatest honor. And that people have covered my songs ’cause it came from me. I mean, I love acting, and that’s so much fun and collaborative, but there’s something about getting to write your own music that’s very, very satisfying for me. And I’ve always been so touched when people connect with it.”

The duo first got together in 2010. Rutler, a New Jersey native, worked on several film sets in the New England area after attending Roger Williams University. He then moved out to Los Angeles, where he met Aguilera when he worked as a production assistant on her 2010 film, Burlesque.

16 years later, the couple is still going strong. On Mother’s Day, Rutler took to Instagram to honor Aguilera.

For the best experience with this dish, I recommend preparing it in the oven rather than the microwave. While the microwave option is convenient and gets the meal ready in about eight minutes, the oven delivers a much better texture and overall eating experience.

The package recommends cooking it for about 20 minutes, but I found that oven temperatures can vary quite a bit. Depending on your oven, you may need to add an extra five to 10 minutes—cooking at 350 degrees to make sure the lasagna is heated all the way through and cooks evenly. The extra time is worth it, especially if you want the dish to come out hot, thoroughly cooked and closer to a homemade-style meal rather than something that tastes microwaved.

Would I Buy the Costco Beef & Short Rib Lasagna Again?

Yes, I would absolutely buy this again. This frozen pasta dish was generously packed with beef and tender short ribs, with just the right amount of cheese to bring everything together without overpowering the sauce. It checked all the boxes for a quick, easy and satisfying workweek meal.

The texture held up well after cooking, and the pasta had a surprising homemade taste that made it feel more substantial than a typical frozen dinner. I was especially impressed by how little effort it took to prepare while still delivering a comforting, hearty meal.

For convenience, flavor and price, I would rate this beef and short rib lasagna from Costco a 9 out of 10. It is an ideal option to keep on hand for busy weeknights when you want something filling and flavorful without spending much time in the kitchen. Grab it in the freezer aisle on your next Costco run to have at the ready when you need a hearty, homestyle meal fast.

Matthew Perry‘s legacy continues to live on.

Three years after the Friends actor’s untimely death, Netflix announced its releasing a three-part docuseries about his life. The series is titled The One About Matthew Perry, borrowing its name inspiration from the beloved NBC sitcom’s signature formula.

According to the streamer, The One About Matthew Perry will feature all-new testimonies from Perry’s sister, Mia Perry Bowick, and his closest friends. Opening up about participating in the program, directed by Emmy winner Mary Robertson, Perry’s sister noted in a statement: “It’s taken time for me to feel ready to share these memories and what it was like to love Matthew through all the complexity of his life—to see him as a whole person, not just as Chandler, and not just as someone who struggled with addiction.”

“As his sister, he shaped who I am today, the person I strive to be, and the work to which I’ve devoted my life,” she continued. “Matthew had a beautiful heart and a generous spirit, and even in his darkest moments, he could still make you laugh and feel loved. The One About Matthew Perry ‘s October 27 premiere date arrives just one day ahead of the third anniversary of Perry’s October 28, 2023, death at age 54. Per his official autopsy report, the star’s death was ruled as “acute effects of ketamine.” Meanwhile, “drowning, coronary artery disease and buprenorphine effects” were listed as contributing factors. 

Five individuals, including Dr. Salvador Plasencia and a drug dealer named Jasveen Sangha, were charged in connection to Perry’s death.

Perry’s death has touched many people, including his five friends costars: Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer. Following the second anniversary of his death last year, Aniston told Elle that the news of Perry’s passing “was so alarming and shocking, yet not shocking.”

“[The Friends cast and I] always said, ‘I hope I never get that phone call.’ We miss him. He’s missed,” the Morning Show star continued. “He was a brilliant human being and an extraordinary talent, loved deeply, and wanted happiness more than anything. It makes me sad that he never really achieved that, because he deserved it.”

The One About Matthew Perry premieres Tuesday, October 27 on Netflix.

Jim Thornton, who is best known as the longtime “Wheel of Fortune” announcer, has been suspended by Sony Pictures Television Studios, TMZ reports.

“We have recently been made aware of allegations concerning Jim Thornton. He has been suspended from Wheel of Fortune, and we are recasting while we conduct a thorough investigation,” the studio told TMZ.

As for an exact reason for the suspension or more information on the allegations, Sony Pictures Television did not provide those details. However, the outlet further reports that the alleged incident occurred when he was “on a commercial flight back in May, and a passenger complained to a flight attendant about Thornton.”

Sources told the outlet that the pilot had to call ahead to have law enforcement meet Thornton when they arrived at the gate. The officers then questioned him, but he was ultimately released.

“On May 14, American Airlines Flight 1276 was met by law enforcement upon arrival at Los Angeles International Airport following concerns reported by a customer onboard,” American Airlines told TMZ.

Dolly Parton’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was vandalized one week after the country music legend died at the age of 80 following a brief battle with cancer.

A spokesperson for the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce told TMZ that the star “already had cracks in it, and the chamber had scheduled it to be repaired Tuesday.” They added that fans reported on the night of Monday, Aug. 31, that someone had stolen the flowers from the star and had scratched it up.

Tributes have poured in for the beloved singer following her death, with many fans also publicly celebrating her incredible legacy. And now, her estate has announced that it will hold a two-day festival across two consecutive weekends in 2027 in Nashville and London. And fittingly, it’s called Dollyfest.

The event was originally set to take place in January 2026 to celebrate her 80th birthday.

“We had the venue booked and we had the announcement ready to go. And then, in August 2025, Dolly had to take a step back after her initial health challenges. A lot of people always say, WWDD (What Would Dolly Do?), and, well, at this moment, Dollyfest is WDWD (What Dolly Would Do!),” organizer Danny Nozell, founder and CEO of CTK Enterprises, said in a statement.

“We are not discouraging people from celebrating Dolly in the ways they choose. However, as far as a traditional memorial goes, that is not something Dolly wanted,” he continued. “So, instead, it feels more appropriate for us to take a beat, let all the tributes that immediately make sense occur naturally, and then, see through this festival-style concept that was truly dreamed up by Dolly.”

“Just keep swimming, just keep swimming…” You can’t think of Finding Nemo without thinking about that line, and it comes from a part written specifically for Ellen DeGeneres, due to her constantly changing topics on her talk show. The 2003 movie would go on to score a 99% Rotten Tomatoes score, but unfortunately, the effect that the story was meant to have ended up being the opposite.

Finding Nemo currently sits in the No. 35 spot on Rotten Tomatoes’ best movies ever. It’s much further down on the IMDb best movies ever list, sitting in No. 162. This lists are constantly changing with new movies joining, and one thing the positions make clear is that this is a highly recommended flick for families, with a message that ended up backfiring.

The original message was about being anti-pet, but instead, it led to a rise in people looking for clown fish — by as much as 40%. Then people started to feel guilty, so they released the fish back into the waters, but not in areas where they could survive. Some children would flush their fish down the drain, believing the line that “all drains lead to the ocean,” leading to plumbers having to share that isn’t the case at all!

Finding Nemo even had to be recreated. At first, it was considered too realistic, with the underwater scenes having the water and light dynamics set in a way that made people feeling like they were there. Director Andrew Stanton realized that this could be a mistake, as it would make many people feel like they were watching live-action footage of real fish, so the creators took a step back.

It was also going to be slightly darker than it ended up being, with Stanton explaining to the BBC that “It was structured differently. We sort of doled out the tragedy throughout the movie, and that gave it a sense of foreboding all the time.”

Of course, there is one element that marine biologists were quick to point out was incorrect: the gender of the fish. When female clown fish die, the male would change sex to female. Marlin should have switched after the death of Coral.

In 2016, a direct sequel to Finding Nemo was finally developed. Finding Dory took us on a new adventure, set just a year after the events of the original movie. There has been interest in more, but there’s not been a storyline developed just yet.

That’s not all! There is going to be a theatrical short called Loving Dory, which will be released with an upcoming Pixar movie. The exact movie hasn’t been confirmed just yet, but the short itself is set to be a message about pollution in the ocean, as Dory mistakes a plastic bag for a jellyfish and falls in love with it.

When Scott Valentine first appeared on the beloved sitcom Family Ties in the fall of 1985, he shook up the traditional, suburban Keaton household with his ’80s rock star hair, dangling earrings, and thick New York accent. More than 40 years later, Valentine looks nothing like his tough guy alter ego, and he’s a long way from Hollywood.

Valentine’s Family Ties character, Nick Moore, arrived on the scene in an episode titled “Mr. Wrong,” as the new love interest of the Keatons’ daughter Mallory, played by Justine Bateman. At first, Nick wasn’t exactly warmly welcomed by her parents, played by Meredith Baxter and Michael Gross.

But Nick became a comical addition to the family, even bonding occasionally with Michael J. Fox’s conservative Alex P. Keaton. Nick became so popular with fans that he appeared in 41 episodes of the hit show between 1985 and the series finale in 1989.

The ’80s heartthrob was on the cover of Playgirl in 1988 and even filmed a series pilot called The Art of Being Nick that aired in August 1987. That show didn’t continue, but his co-star, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, landed her career-defining role as Ellen on Seinfeld three years later.

After Family Ties, Valentine continued to act for many years, from guest spots on major shows to voice-over work, including starring in the ’90s animated series Phantom 2040. But eventually, he told In the Spotlight podcast host Mike Cannici in 2023, “I got sick of Hollywood, and I left in ’04. I became an investment banker.”

Valentine’s a long way from Hollywood these days, after returning to his roots in Saratoga Springs, New York. According to Valentine’s LinkedIn profile, he’s spent nearly two decades as Managing Director at Excelsior Capital Partners, LLC. He also merged his skills in finance and entertainment to co-found a streaming platform for independent filmmakers called Red Coral Universe, with over 7,000 free titles.

From 1985 to 2012, he was married to Kym Denyse Stephenson, with whom he shares four grown sons. Now 68, Valentine has been married to his second wife, Jennifer, since 2021. He regularly posts about experiencing concerts and fun outings with her and their friends, writing recently, “I’m so lucky to have such great people in my life.”

Why Playing Nick on Family Ties Was ‘Difficult’ for Scott Valentine

During his interview with Cannici, Valentine addressed rumors that he didn’t like playing Nick on Family Ties, explaining, “It wasn’t that I didn’t like the character. What was actually very difficult for me, at times, is I got paid so much money that it was really hard to to justify that in my mind.”

“I had this weird thing, Michael, where I did voiceovers for a long time, got paid a lot of money to do it and it was so easy, I’m thinking, ‘God, why am I getting paid this amount of money?’ And, like, (on) Family Ties, some weeks I’d just walk out and say two, like, ‘Heyyy.’ Couple of them and I got paid a lot of money, and I’m thinking, ‘Teachers should get paid this kind of money. Engineers should get paid this. People that are saving our country should get paid this.’ It was hard to reconcile with.”

Valentine also recognized how “lucky” he was to land such a plum role on a series that was already a hit, explaining, “I was very fortunate to to walk into a situation where the show’s already established. Established writers, established relationships, and to have such talented actors from Fox to Gross to Meredith to Justine to Tina Yothers. They’re all very talented people. I was very, very, very, very lucky.”

From the moment they met in 1970 until Freddie Mercury‘s death on November 24, 1991, there was one person in his life he leaned on more than anyone else: Mary Austin. The two lived together for six years and were even engaged, but after they both came to terms with his sexuality, their romance shifted into something else entirely — a bond that lasted the rest of his life.

The Queen frontman once explained the transformation to biographer Lesley-Ann Jones for Freddie Mercury: The Definitive Biography. “Our love affair ended in tears, but a deep bond grew out of it, and that’s something nobody can take away from us,” Mercury said. “It’s unreachable.”

Decades later, in a rare sit-down with The Guardian, Austin opened up about being by his side in his final days, pregnant at the time with her second son, holding his hand and doing whatever needed to be done as his health failed.

“He was on morphine and in and out of consciousness, and he falls back to sleep,” she remembered. “And I stand there for quite a while and he finally comes round again and he just said, ‘My old faithful.’ So I felt a bit like a dog. I wasn’t flattered.”

Austin has said the remark left her feeling more like a pet than a partner, and that she didn’t take it as a compliment.

At the “Bohemian Rhapsody” singer’s funeral, Austin sent a wreath of yellow and white roses, a nod to what was reportedly his favorite color, and signed the note “always faithful,” an echo of his last words to her.

After Mercury died, Austin inherited Garden Lodge, his London home, along with half of his assets and future royalties. She has said she initially resisted the inheritance, but that Mercury insisted it was rightfully hers, once telling her that had things gone differently, she would have been his wife.

Mercury, by Austin’s account, never actually told her he loved her in words. Instead, according to her description, he showed it by buying her things. For her part, Austin has been unambiguous about how she feels looking back, telling The Guardian that, in retrospect, he remains the love of her life.

Just over a month after scoring his first No. 1 hit, Gary Lewis proved that being the son of a Hollywood legend wasn’t the only reason people were paying attention.

At 19, the son of comedian Jerry Lewis was fronting Gary Lewis & the Playboys when the group released “Count Me In” in 1965. The buoyant pop-rock song followed their chart-topping breakthrough, “This Diamond Ring,” and nearly repeated its success, climbing all the way to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

“Count Me In” came from a songwriter with an impressive pop pedigree.

Glen D. Hardin wrote the song, which gave Lewis another vehicle for the clean-cut, melodic sound that was quickly becoming the Playboys’ trademark. Producer Snuff Garrett, who had also overseen “This Diamond Ring,” continued shaping the group’s polished studio recordings.

“We always had things in the can,” Lewis later told Songfacts. “We always did. When we went into a recording session, it wasn’t just to record what would be the next hit. We always recorded about four songs and put them in the can and Snuffy would listen to them with Leon Russell. They’d make whatever decisions, because I gave Snuffy total control of everything, because I didn’t know what I was doing. I was too young and I didn’t know anything about the business yet. So he’d have us record four or five songs at one time and complete them all and just have them in the can. Then he would put out what he wanted to put out.”

Its arrival couldn’t have been better timed.

“This Diamond Ring” had reached No. 1 in February 1965, transforming Lewis and his band from newcomers into one of the year’s breakout acts. Rather than disappearing after one enormous single, they returned almost immediately with “Count Me In.”

The follow-up stopped just short of the top.

“Count Me In” peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, held out of the top spot by Herman’s Hermits’ “Mrs. Brown, You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter.” Still, its performance demonstrated that Gary Lewis & the Playboys had more than one hit in them.

Several more quickly followed.

The group scored another Top 5 hit with “Save Your Heart for Me” before “Everybody Loves a Clown,” a song Lewis co-wrote, reached No. 4 later that year. “She’s Just My Style” continued the streak, and by the end of the ’60s, the Playboys had amassed a remarkable run of charting singles.

“[Garrett] did have talent for picking songs,” Lewis told Classic Bands. “He knew the timing of when to put ’em out and he was a great producer.” 

The success also allowed Lewis to establish an identity apart from his famous father. Jerry Lewis may have helped the Playboys gain early national exposure, but Gary’s string of hits gave him a show-business career distinctly his own.

“The fans are the ones who put all of us wherever we are, so I want to do this music and give happiness back to the fans — to make them happy with what I do,” Lewis said in a 2021 interview.

More than six decades later, “This Diamond Ring” remains the group’s signature No. 1, but “Count Me In” captures just how quickly Gary Lewis & the Playboys turned their breakthrough into staying power. At only 19, Lewis followed one of 1965’s biggest records with a No. 2 smash and confirmed that his arrival was no fluke.
