How did Stephen Colbert become famous?

Born May 13, 1964, in Washington, D.C., Colbert was the youngest of 11 children. His father, James William Colbert, Jr., was an immunologist and medical school dean at several colleges, including Yale University. His parents were devout Catholics, though they still espoused the importance of intellectualism, and he has remained religious as an adult.

On Sept. 11, 1974, Colbert's father and brothers Paul and Peter died in a plane crash, which Colbert has said profoundly changed his life in numerous ways and given him unique perspectives on grief. In particular, he said the tragedy made him feel "detached" from other kids his age.

"I know that after they died, nothing, I was 10, you know? I was still in school. It was in elementary school," he told 60 Minutes. "But nothing seemed that important to me. And so, I had immediately had sort of a, I won't say a cynical detachment from the world. But I would certainly say I was detached from what was normal behavior of children around me. It didn't make much sense. None of it seemed very important. And I think that, you know, feeds into a sense that acceptance, or blind acceptance of authority, is not easy for me."

One result of his self-described detachment was his interest in J.R.R. Tolkien novels and the game Dungeons & Dragons, the latter of which he said inspired his interest in acting. He began writing for his high school newspaper and acting in plays. He continued acting in college, transferring from Virginia's Hampden–Sydney College, where he majored in philosophy, to Northwestern University to major in theater. He graduated from the Northwestern University School of Communication in 1986.

After graduating, he declined an unpaid internship at The Late Show with David Letterman and pursued improv comedy with Second City, where he worked with Steve Carell, Paul Dinello and Amy Sedaris. Comedian, writer and producer Robert Smigel tried to get Colbert on Saturday Night Live and to work with Conan O'Brien, but the NBC legacy show and the lanky funnyman both declined. He then began working with Dinello and Sedaris on the Comedy Central series Exit 57, and though it only lasted for 12 episodes, it helped him hit his stride and meet other influential comedy figures that would serve him well going forward.

Marvin Gaye's iconic 'What's Goin' On' album just marked over 5 decades since its release.

Following the hit song, by the same name, that came out in January of 1971, Gaye's full album which was ultimately a form of political activism, touching on themes of police brutality and references to the Vietnam War, was released later that year on May 20, 1971.

However, as the iconic singer was signed to Motown, the label known for upbeat and lighthearted dance music by the artists like the Jackson 5 and Stevie Wonder, the album reportedly wasn't expected to do well, if it was released at all, by the record label's head exec, Berry Gordy. In fact, he reportedly said the album would be, "the worst thing he ever heard," according to Apple Music. Gordy was also hesitant to move forward with the song and album as Gaye had established himself as a romantic singer with songs like "Sexual Healing" and "Let's Get It On," and singing about heavier topics would be a major pivot.

"Motown thought Marvin was absolutely insane, and that I had lost my marbles too," the album's arranger David Van DePitte said, per The Independent in 2009. "This was going to be the biggest fiasco that ever was. Nobody believed in it at all."

However, the famed music exec caved and gave Gaye one month to write the rest of the album.

“I work best under pressure and when I’m depressed,” he told the Detroit Free Press at the time, according to Rolling Stone. “The world’s never been as depressing as it is right now."

Gaye, who perhaps knew the album would strike a chord, put somewhat of a disclaimer in the album's liner notes, per The New York Times.

“If you like the artist well enough to buy his or her album, you don’t have to be told how groovy it is, or which tunes you should dig, or how great his or her majesty is,” he wrote. “I mean the fact that people just won’t let us think for ourselves really bugs me! Now just because I like “Mercy Mercy Me” and the one that says “Save The Children,” shouldn't influence anyone. And you shouldn’t have to pay any special attention to the lyrics on “Flyin’ High In The Friendly Sky” just because I think you ought to.”

The album went on to spend nine weeks at No. 1 of the Billboard Soul chart.

Most recently the it was included in a "Greatest of All Time" ranking by Rolling Stone.

In 1972, the Raspberries released what would become their biggest hit with “Go All the Way.” Written by Eric Carmen, the song appeared on the band’s self-titled debut album and peaked at No. 5 on the  Billboard Hot  100 in August 1972. The certified gold record was the band's only Top 10 hit.

Ultimate Classic Rock named “Go All the Way” the Raspberries' greatest song, describing it as “one of the most vibrant and triumphant records ever.”  “In many ways, this is the definitive power pop song of all time,” the music outlet noted.

While ”Go All the Way” was a U.S. smash, Carmen’s sexually suggestive lyrics about taking a romantic relationship “all the way” didn’t go over so well in the UK. In 1972, the song was banned from the radio by the BBC, according to American Songwriter.

The Rolling Stones inspired the song

Carmen, who would find massive success as a solo artist a few years later, once revealed that “Go All the Way” was inspired by a similarly suggestive song: the Rolling Stones’ “Let’s Spend the Night Together.”

In an interview published by The Huffington Post, Carmen recalled that the Stones' song was “too racy” for American TV and the lyrics had to be changed to “let’s spend some time together” for the band’s appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. Carmen noted that at the same time, the Beach Boys were “getting away with murder” with the lyrics to their song “Wouldn’t It Be Nice.”

“Between the lines, the Beach Boys were getting much more suggestive stuff on the radio, but no one batted an eye because they sounded like choir boys and they looked pretty harmless,” Carmen said. “When I sat down to write, I remember thinking to myself, ‘I've got to write a song that's suggestive, but I've got to present it in a way that we don't end up like the Stones.’”

Carmen noted that he came up with the "Go All the Way" title but wrote the song as a girl saying it to a guy, so it would come off as “less threatening.”

“So that was kind of how we did it,” he said. “One of two things would happen, just based on the title: It was either going to be banned, in which case that would create some controversy and we would sell some albums, or it would be a big smash hit, just based on the title. It turns out it was banned in England, they wouldn't play it at all, and in America it went top five.”

The Raspberries split in 1975, and Carmen went on to find massive success as a solo artist. In an interview with the Observer, he noted that he pushed for his solo single, “All By Myself,” because it “was certainly as far away from 'Go All The Way' as you could get.”

“The Raspberries had recorded some ballads on every one of our albums, but after ‘Go All The Way' was successful Capital pretty much wanted to hear nothing but ‘Go All The Way,’” Carmen explained. “I wanted [‘All By Myself’] to be the first single because it was the furthest thing from the Raspberries, and I wanted people to understand that’s not all I can do."

Matthew Perry’s mother, Suzanne Morrison, says her son’s assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa’s “most important job” was to protect him and keep him drug-free. Instead, she says, it was Iwamasa’s actions that ultimately led to her son’s death.

Perry, who openly spoke about his recovery and addiction to drugs and alcohol, was found dead in his hot tub in October 2023 from "acute effects of ketamine." He was 54. An investigation determined Iwamasa repeatedly injected Perry multiple times a day, doing so without any medical training. Iwamasa faces up to 15 years in prison, but prosecutors are seeking a 41-month prison sentence, plus three years supervised release.

According to a plea agreement Iwamasa made with the DOJ, on the day of his death, Perry allegedly told Iwamasa to “shoot me up with a big one” and prepare his hot tub. The assistant ran some errands and found Perry dead, face down in the water.

Morrison opened up in a victim impact statement shared with People about the immense pain and damage Perry's assistant caused.

"But instead of protecting Matthew, he aided and abetted illegal drug taking, arranged for one source of supply, then another," she wrote. "Shot the drugs into Matthew's body, though he was not in the least qualified.. He did it even though he could see, anyone could have seen, it was so obviously dangerous. And he did it again and again."

After Perry died, Morrison recalled how Iwamasa "kept a sharp eye on me," even "sending songs, he drew a little map to help me find my way around the cemetery. If he saw a rainbow – one of Matthew's favorite things – he would call me," Morrison penned.

Iwamasa also insisted upon speaking at Perry's funeral, trying to paint himself as "the good guy who tried to save Matthew." She added, "He threatened legal action to pry a settlement from workmen's comp. We trusted a man without a conscience, and my son paid the price."

There are some things that follow you throughout your entire life. For Joan Collins, it was three words from her Dynasty producer that followed her for decades.

"Joan is Alexis."

That's what Aaron Spelling said about Collins and the cutthroat, unhinged character she played on the hit ABC prime time soap opera. And more than 4 decades later, at 92 years old, Collins is finally opening up about why those words were so hurtful.

"When Aaron Spelling said, 'Joan is Alexis,' that haunted me for so long," Collins told British Vogue in a new interview about her role as Wallis Simpson in her latest project biopic My Duchess.

She didn't just let it go, either. She confronted him directly.

"I said, 'Aaron, why did you say that? You know that's not true.'"

His response was brutally honest and completely cynical.

"Honey, it gets headlines."

When a Character Becomes Your Identity

Collins joined Dynasty in 1981 as Alexis Carrington Colby, the scheming, sharp-tongued ex-wife of oil tycoon Blake Carrington. The show was struggling to survive in its first season, but Collins' arrival changed everything. Dynasty shot to number one, and Alexis became one of television's most iconic characters on prime time.

But that success came with a price Collins is still paying.

In one of his final interviews before his death in 2006, Spelling said of Collins: "We didn't write Joan Collins. She played Joan Collins. Am I right? We wrote a character, but the character could have been played by 50 people, and 49 of them would have failed. She made it work."

On one level, it was a compliment. Collins brought something special to Alexis — the wit, the glamour, and the ability to deliver cutting lines with perfect timing made her irreplaceable.

It also alluded to something else: that Joan Collins and Alexis Carrington weren't that different. And, that the scheming, ruthless woman on screen was just Collins being herself.

And that, Collins says, simply wasn't true.

The confusion between the star and the characters she played had real consequences. Collins became synonymous with the "bitch" label that followed Alexis, even though she saw the character very differently.

"I happen to think that Alexis was a very vulnerable and sad character," Collins told PEOPLE in 2023. "Because she had been banished from her children by Blake Carrington, who was a murderer. You know? We never hear about this, of course, because he's a man."

She continued: "It was never mentioned that, perhaps, Alexis Carrington became somewhat of a bitch because of the way she was treated, when she also was extremely witty and had great, great lines of dialogue, and was a big go-getter in terms of what she achieved."

Collins played Alexis for eight of Dynasty's nine seasons, from 1981 to 1989. She poured everything into herself into creating a complex, layered character — vulnerable beneath the armor, wounded beneath the wit.

But all anyone wanted to talk about was whether Joan Collins was really just Alexis in real life.

And when her own producer said it out loud — and admitted he said it just for the publicity — it hurt in a way that lasted decades.

Some headlines aren't worth it.

Prince Harry is said to be feeling the sting of royal "silence" as he celebrated his wedding anniversary to Meghan Markle.

Shuter wrote, "Prince Harry and Meghan Markle presented a picture-perfect united front for their eighth wedding anniversary. But behind palace walls, the silence from the royal family was deafening."

"Sources tell Naughty But Nice that no senior royal publicly or privately contacted the couple to mark the occasion. There was no phone call, no private message, no peace offering — absolutely nothing. The silence was very intentional," said a source.

The last time the royal family publicly shared anniversary wishes for the couple was to mark their first year of marriage in 2019. The royal family's Instagram marked the occasion with a sweet photo and message.

Actor Bruce Dern is reliving a parent’s worst nightmare: the loss of a child. In the new documentary Dernsie: The Amazing Life of Bruce Dern, which premiered at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, he recounts the moment he learned that his 18-month-old daughter—his first child with Diane Ladd—had died.

"My wife was at a Dodgers game; I was at a track meet at the Coliseum," Dern says in the documentary of his daughter's death in 1962. "I was told over the loudspeaker to go to the desk, and some plainclothes cop said to me, 'Are you Bruce Dern?' And I said 'Yes,' and he said, 'You should go home right now, because your child just drowned in a swimming pool.'"

Dern’s daughter, Diane Elizabeth, was at home with the family’s maid while he and his wife were out. He recalled that, during a phone call, the maid was briefly distracted, and Diane Elizabeth managed to pry open the locked pool gate with a spoon, giving her access to the open pool.

His daughter's death was absolutely devastating, Dern says. "So I go home. I went into the bedroom, and I looked at the little girl on the bed, and it's the only time in my life, I think, that it broke my heart," he said. "I felt ashamed that it was on my watch. I never got over it. You never get over it."

Dern continued, "Because Diane and I shared a tragedy, we stayed together longer than we should have, but out of it, five years later, came Laura. About a month later, it was over for Diane and I, and we never really talked it out. She wasn't there. I wasn't there.”

Laura Dern previously shared that she also felt the weight of that loss. “I guess I was the replacement child. I felt a responsibility to you and Dad and Grandma, to try to make sure you didn’t have to feel that pain again,” she admitted to The Times alongside her mother in a 2023 interview. “It always seemed to me that [her father] didn’t relax with you until you were a day older than little Diane when she died.”
