Founding Member of Beloved '80s Band Dies Suddenly at 63: 'We Are Utterly Shocked and Deeply Saddened'
Calvin Hayes, a founding member of the British pop band Johnny Hates Jazz, has died at the age of 63 after collapsing at his home in Washington state. His wife, Kathy, confirmed his death to The Express UK, and on Saturday, Hayes' former bandmates Clark Datchler and Mike Nocito shared an emotional tribute celebrating both the musician and the lasting legacy of the music they created together.
Hayes co-founded Johnny Hates Jazz with Datchler and Nocito in 1986, helping launch one of the decade's most successful pop acts. After an initial single failed to break through, the trio found worldwide success with "Shattered Dreams" in 1987. The song became an even bigger hit in the United States than in the UK, climbing to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reaching No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart. It was followed by the hits "I Don't Want to Be a Hero," "Turn Back the Clock" and "Heart of Gold," while the band's debut album, Turn Back the Clock, reached No. 1 in the UK and sold millions of copies worldwide.

Reflecting on their years together, they wrote, "The three of us were brothers in arms for an extraordinary moment in time, one in which we managed to touch the world with the music we created together." They added that, despite Hayes no longer being part of the band, they knew he "remained incredibly proud" that their songs, particularly those from Turn Back the Clock, "continue to resonate with so many people" 40 years later.
The tribute concluded with a touching reflection on Hayes' legacy: "It is in the brightness of that moment, and with the memory of the great camaraderie we once shared, that we will remember Calvin." The statement was signed simply, "With much love, Clark and Mike."
Following the band's initial success, Datchler departed in 1988 to pursue a solo career, while Hayes and Nocito continued recording with singer Phil Thornalley. That chapter came to an abrupt end after Hayes suffered a devastating car accident that left him hospitalized for an extended period. He later reunited with the original lineup for live performances in 2010 before stepping away from the band once again. Beyond Johnny Hates Jazz, Hayes also performed with other artists, including Kim Wilde, and was the son of legendary producer Mickie Most, whose clients included The Animals, Herman's Hermits, Suzi Quatro and Hot Chocolate.
Nearly four decades after "Shattered Dreams" became an international smash, Hayes is being remembered not only for helping create one of the defining pop songs of the late 1980s, but also for the friendships and musical legacy that endured long after the band's biggest success.

1983 Rock Classic, Written for Iconic No. 1 Comedy Movie, Became a Timeless Road Trip Anthem
Everybody knows that Lindsey Buckingham wrote some pretty catchy tunes with Fleetwood Mac, but it could be argued that his most relentless earworm of all time had nothing to do withStevie Nicks. Nope, the Buckingham song most likely to get stuck in your head for days is more closely associated with Chevy Chase.
Buckingham had never written a song for a movie soundtrack before when director Harold Ramis approached him about writing a track for his iconic 1983 family road trip comedy, National Lampoon's Vacation (which would, of course, go on to become one of the highest-grossing films of the decade). While he wasn't sure if he was right for the gig, Buckingham ended up writing two tunes for the movie: "Dancin' Across the USA" and the aforementioned stuck song, "Holiday Road."
"Harold Ramis called me up and asked me if I would write a beginning and a second song to go over the credits, which was 'Dancin' Across the USA,' my attempt at recreating the Mills Brothers," Buckingham told Stereogum in 2018. "It's one of those things, you almost want to say, 'I don't do that.' It wasn't part of my discipline. I wasn't sure I could do it, but that was also freeing because he wanted me to try."
According to Buckingham, Ramis was a big fan of "Holiday Road" as soon as he heard it.
"We came up with this thing, and I remember very clearly him coming out to the studio with a couple of his people, producers, Matty [Simmons], I think, and listening to this song for the first time. He was literally blown away at how effective it was and how some of the subject matter, without me even having seen the film, was addressed."
One of the things that probably blew Ramis away was the fact that Buckingham included dog barks in "Holiday Road" before he even knew about one of the movie's most famous scenes.
"I didn't know there was going to be a scene in the movie where a dog gets dragged behind a car without them knowing it," Buckingham recalled. "Obviously, I knew it had to be somewhat uplifting and a little bit funny, which it is, but somehow we nailed it beyond his expectations certainly. He was like, 'Holy crap.' A lot of that was just luck. Then when I got asked to do the title song for Ghostbusters, I said, 'Nah, you know, I did this really well once. It's not something I want to get into as a repetitive part of my identity.'"

Buckingham said he never expected "Holiday Road" to end up being one of his most "enduring" classics.
"That often happens though when you're doing something where you perceive that the stakes are quite low, when you're doing something that's outside of your basic wheelhouse," he pointed out.
Seems Buckingham's wheelhouse was wider than he thought. "Holiday Road" went on to be used in all of the movie's sequels, too: National Lampoon's European Vacation (1985), Vegas Vacation (1997) and Vacation (2015).
'80s Rock Icon Debuts 2 Unreleased Songs at Biggest Solo Show of His Career
Johnny Marr, the co-songwriter and guitarist for the legendary British band The Smiths, achieved a major milestone on July 9 when he performed a show in Manchester, England. The sold-out performance was an exciting return to his hometown.
After decades of making music, both in a band and on his own, the Manchester show was the biggest show of his career so far, and it just so happened to be in the city where he grew up. The show took place at Castlefield Bowl, and while Marr headlined, Everything Everything and The ClockWorks also performed.
At the show, Marr had a special surprise for his fans, debuting two new songs for the excited crowd. He performed "It's Time" and "All In A Life" for the first time, while also performing "Spin," the first single from his upcoming album The Age of Everything.
As reported by Music-News.com, the new music was recorded in Manchester, but it was written in London. He also worked on it while touring in North America. Marr also performed songs from earlier in his solo career, as well as The Smiths hits like "How Soon Is Now?" and "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before."

Marr announced last month that he had a new album coming out this year, which will be his fifth solo album. In a statement alongside the news, Marr called this record "the most cathartic."
"It seemed to sum up the way I think a lot of people are feeling. It’s all encompassing, but it's not necessarily a negative statement," he said of the title and concept. "There’s a sense of overwhelm in the culture brought about by technology, but looking at it with a different light, there could also be a sense of possibility.”
The Age of Everything is set to be released on Oct. 2, 2026.

Psychologists Say People Who Leave Without Saying Goodbye Usually Have These 7 'Misunderstood' Personality Traits
Ah, the good old Irish goodbye. Also known as the French exit or Dutch leave, this party trick is the art of leaving a social gathering without saying "goodbye" to anyone. And although these phrases are commonly used today, they are negatively rooted in ethnic stereotyping—especially considering the fact that many claim the phrase Irish exit was named after people who were too drunk to say bye when leaving a party.
But no matter where these phrases truly originated, nowadays, there are many reasons people might leave a social situation without bidding adieu. Sneaking out of a gathering doesn't always mean someone is trying to be rude—in fact, Parade spoke with two psychologists who explained some of the common "misunderstood" personality traits of people who leave without saying goodbye.
"When someone abruptly leaves a social gathering without saying goodbye ... they are often viewed or judged as being rude, dismissive, or even anti-social. Sometimes this can be true but, in my experience, this is quite often not the case," says Dr. Jeffrey Gardere, Ph.D., ABPP, clinical psychologist and Professor of Behavioral Medicine at the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine.
"The reality is that there are several personality traits and psychological tendencies that are often misunderstood and may explain this behavior, especially if it is something that a person does often," Dr. Gardere tells Parade.

1. Social anxiety"Individuals with social anxiety may work up enough courage to attend an event. But as time goes by, they may become increasingly anxious and fearful and feel awkward being in the presence of others," Dr. Gardere says. "Saying goodbye can feel like having to repeat the social interaction all over again, especially if it leads to prolonged conversations, questions, or attention being focused on them. Slipping out quietly may feel less stressful then engaging in farewells."
Dr. Maggie Hogan, a licensed clinical psychologist working in private practice, echoes these sentiments.
"Someone who leaves a social function without saying goodbye might be experiencing social anxiety. A million questions might run through their head, leading them to avoid the goodbye entirely," she tells Parade. "On an anxious day, just leaving might feel easier than navigating these questions."

2. IntroversionSomeone who identifies as an introvert might find it difficult to say goodbye at an event.
"Introverts like being alone or spending time with very few people," Dr. Gardere explains. "So one or two people may be emotionally acceptable. But as the crowd starts to build, so does the discomfort to the point that they may slip away."

"Many of us have experienced that moment when our social battery just dies," says Dr. Hogan. "Maybe we've been socializing for too long or with too many people, and by the time goodbyes roll around, we have nothing left to give."
She explains that when it's time to leave a larger party, for someone with a depleted social battery, "imagining saying multiple goodbyes to the whole group can feel overwhelming."
4. Conflict avoidantAccording to both psychologists, conflict-avoidant people might fear how people will react to them announcing their departure—so instead, they just flee.
"If a person anticipates that saying goodbye will lead to social pressure to stay or perhaps pressure to commit to the next gathering before they are ready, they may opt to avoid that moment entirely," says Dr. Hogan. "Perhaps this person fears the moment of conflict or lacks the energy for it, has difficulty setting boundaries, or doesn't want to be perceived as 'bringing the vibe down' by having an awkward conversation."
Dr. Gardere agrees. "Some individuals ... may worry that announcing their farewells might lead to an uncomfortable exchange or that they may be seen as not being a team player," he says. "Leaving quietly allows them to avoid a potentially stressful interaction and maintain their emotional comfort."
5. NeurodivergenceNeurodivergence, a non-medical term that has been embraced more and more in recent years, describes people whose brains work a bit differently than most, per the Cleveland Clinic. Some neurodivergent people may also have related medical conditions, such as autism spectrum disorder or ADHD. And per Dr. Gardere, some neurodivergent individuals can find it challenging to process social cues and situations.
"Their attention spans may quickly pivot to another task or situation, and they may abruptly walk away from a conversation at a social gathering without saying a word," he says.

6. Emotions around goodbyesAccording to Dr. Hogan, some people find saying goodbye to be too sad or "emotionally charged."
"It can bring up anxiety or even grief when there is uncertainty about when you will see the other person again," she explains. "Some people prefer to ignore the transition by sending a quick text later or by moving on to planning the next social gathering."
7. High independenceAnd then, there are some people who simply prioritize their independence over social niceties.
"Some people are extremely independent and march to the beat of their own drummer," says Dr. Gardere. "So when they are done and want to leave…they are done and leave. They do not feel they need to explain their actions to anyone. Their behavior can be mistaken for inconsideration when it is often simply a reflection of their autonomous nature."
What To Do When a Friend Leaves Without Saying GoodbyeWhen a friend leaves without saying goodbye to you, it can feel personal, and make you worry that your friend is mad at you. But in most cases, it's not about you—it's about them.
"Sometimes there is context we don't fully understand when someone leaves without saying goodbye. It is important not to make assumptions about what could be happening, and to try to give our friends the benefit of the doubt," says Dr. Hogan.
"Perhaps something difficult happened that day that we don't know about, they received an urgent message or perhaps mother nature is calling after those loaded nachos," she jokes. "If we are concerned about the person, or hurt by not getting a 'goodbye,' we can always check in to see if there is something we don't understand."
So next time a friend "Irish exits" your fête, consider sending a text to thank them for coming and ask if everything's alright.

1994 Film With Iconic Soundtrack Named Most Important Movie for Generation X
Every generation has that one movie that really defines it.
With Generation X, whose coming of age coincided with a seismic shift in Hollywood, cinema moved from the 1970s blockbuster era to the gritty independent boom of the 1990s. That shift helped shape a generation defined by rebellious, cynical, and groundbreaking films with undeniable swagger.
According to Collider, there’s one film—a Royale with cheese, if you will—that captures all of the above and more: Quentin Tarantino’s 1994 gem, Pulp Fiction.
“For Generation X, disillusionment and irony were defining traits,” the outlet writes about the film it considers Gen X’s most important, “and no film captured that cultural moment like Pulp Fiction. It turned the rules of narrative upside down, weaving together nonlinear storylines filled with pop culture banter, sudden bursts of violence, and memorable characters.”
Released inOctober 1994, Pulp Fiction is a crime thriller told through four primary vignettes out of chronological order. Set in Los Angeles over two days, it scrambles the lives of hitmen, a boxer, a mobster’s wife, and diner thieves into a fragmented narrative that embodies the irreverent spirit many associate with Gen X.
“For Gen X, Pulp Fiction felt like a generational manifesto: irreverent, rebellious, and endlessly quotable,” Collider says. “It was the film that proved their worldview, fragmented, cynical, but alive with possibility, belonged on the big screen.”
Written and directed by Tarantino, whose résumé already included Reservoir Dogs and the screenplay for True Romance, Pulp Fiction brought together a Who’s Who of Hollywood, with John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, Uma Thurman, Tim Roth, and many others embodying a “new kind of cool.”
Together, they gave life to Tarantino’s mosaic of morally ambiguous criminals, fixers, and dreamers.
“No movie captured this sensibility with more swagger, and its impact was immediate and seismic,” the outlet says. “Pulp Fiction influenced countless filmmakers and reshaped how audiences thought about storytelling. Its meta quality, referencing scores of movies and shows, also resonated with a generation who had grown up with home video and easy access to cinema's classics.”
Another reason the film resonated so deeply was its soundtrack. A genre-defying mix of surf rock, soulful R&B, classic pop, and country, it was perfect for what Tarantino famously described as his “rock and roll spaghetti western.”
“I never understood what the hell [surf rock] had to do with surfing,” Tarantino told Rolling Stone. “I don't see the connection between this music and surfing—to me, it sounded like rock and roll spaghetti western music. What I don’t want to do is, and I see it happen in a lot of movies, [is] just turn up the soundtrack to create a false energy.”
From Dick Dale’s "Misirlou," The Centurians' "Bullwinkle Part II," and Link Wray’s “Ace of Spades,” to Chuck Berry’s “You Never Can Tell,” Urge Overkill's “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon,” and Dusty Springfield’s “Son of a Preacher Man,” the needle drops became as memorable as the dialogue itself.

Few love songs dominated the charts in the '70s quite like "Tonight's the Night."
Released in 1976, Rod Stewart's tender ballad became one of the biggest hits of his career, spending an impressive eight consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Nearly 50 years later, it continues to stand as one of the defining soft rock anthems of the decade.
The song showcased a different side of Stewart.
Co-written by Stewart, "Tonight's the Night (Gonna Be Alright)" traded the swagger of his earlier rock hits for an intimate, acoustic-driven arrangement centered on romance and vulnerability. His unmistakably raspy voice, paired with gentle guitars and understated instrumentation, gave the recording a warmth that resonated with listeners around the world.
"This came to me in the middle of the night, as songs often do," Stewart said in an interview. "I always keep a note pad and cassette recorder by my bed, among other things. Steve Cropper and I worked out the arrangement on Friday morning and it was in the can by Friday night, lyrics being finished by the following evening. We spent more time working on the somewhat complicated intro than the song itself. It was banned by many radio stations because of its lyrical content, but, nevertheless, a little scandal never did anyone any harm."
The lyric in question was suggestive, and loaded with innuendo: "Spread your wings and let me come inside." But, the sexual nature of the lyrics didn't stop audiences from listening; in fact, it had the exact opposite result: The single became an immediate sensation.
It topped the Billboard Hot 100 for eight straight weeks, making it the longest-running No. 1 hit of Stewart's career. The song also reached No. 1 in Canada and became a major international success, helping propel the album A Night on the Town to the top of the charts.
Part of the song's lasting appeal comes from its emotional restraint.

"I was going out with Britt Ekland," he told Mojoin 1995. "I'd just moved [to the United States.] So that's 20 years ago. I remember I got her drunk, pissed as a fart to sing that old French bollocks on the end, because she didn't want to do it."
The song also became one of Stewart's signature recordings, joining classics such as "Maggie May," "You're in My Heart (The Final Acclaim)," "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" and "Forever Young." The Famous Leading Man Who Almost Quit This 1996 Film Due To Casting
Richard Gere almost abandoned one of his most memorable films all because of one missing piece. In a recent interview on The Movie Podcast, Gere revealed that Primal Fear nearly fell apart before it even started filming, due to a casting struggle that had him ready to quit the project entirely. The role in question: Aaron Stampler, the troubled 19-year-old altar boy accused of murder, whom Gere's character agrees to defend pro bono.
According to Gere, the search for the right actor proved far more difficult than expected. While plenty of big-name young actors auditioned for the part, they kept falling short. "They did fine with the crazy part, but they weren't believable as being normal," he explained, noting how essential that balance was to the character.
Gere, now 76, admitted he'd reached a breaking point. "I said, 'We can't do it without an actor who can play that part, it won't work,'" he recalled. Just as he was ready to walk away, a casting director in New York flagged one final audition. "This kid walked in. I think he's really terrific," the casting director told the team. That "kid" was Edward Norton.

Yet, at the same time, the global soccer/fútbol community is processing a terrible tragedy.
At just 25 years old, South African midfielder Jayden Adams has passed away. News of his death was announced early in the day on July 11, although his cause of death remains unknown at present. Adams' passing devastatingly comes just two and a half weeks after the South African team had a remarkable World Cup win in their match against South Korea on June 24, with a final score of 1-0.

Although South Africa did not ultimately proceed beyond the group stage at this year's World Cup, they delivered a solid performance, tying 1-1 with Czechia on June 18 and only giving up one point to Canada in a 0-1 game on June 28 after losing 0-2 to Mexico in their first game of the tournament on June 11. With that solid effort from the team, the 2026 World Cup felt like only the beginning for Adams, which makes his sudden, unexpected death all the more shocking and painful.
To honor Adams, the Norway versus England game began with a moment of silence for the late player, with both teams standing on the field, side-by-side with their teammates.
The South African Football Players Union also posted a message on X about Adams' passing, saying, "Death has cruelly stolen one of our own. ’60s Supergroup, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Ranked Among ‘Messiest Band Breakups’ of All Time
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young was celebrated as one of the greatest supergroups in history, but the legendary quartet's legacy was also remembered for its turbulent relationships, earning it a place among the "messiest band breakups" of all time.
Revisiting the feuds and personal conflicts that overshadowed its remarkable success, Rolling Stone compiled its list of the 50 ugliest breakups in the music industry, featuring bands that experienced bitter legal feuds, fractured relationships and onstage brawls.
With music icon the Beatles topping the rankings, followed by Oasis, Live, Sonic Youth and the Everly Brothers, who landed in the second through fifth positions respectively, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young ranked No. 13.
Initially, the group was a trio formed in 1969 by members of The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield and The Hollies. It was only David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash who came together to create one of the most influential supergroups.
Since the members were already established musicians, the band sparked immense anticipation, helping make its self-titled album a massive commercial success.

Released in 1969 by Atlantic Records, Crosby, Stills & Nash featured the hit singles "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" and "Marrakesh Express," which both charted on the Billboard Hot 100, with the first peaking at No. 21 and the latter at No. 28.
In the same year, just months after releasing the album, Neil Young joined the group after Atlantic Records and the band's management negotiated his entry, forming Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
The quartet played its live debut at Chicago's Auditorium Theatre on Aug. 16, 1969, followed by a legendary second performance at the Woodstock Festival two days later.
Although Grateful Dead members later described their own Woodstock performance as one of the band's "worst sets ever," the festival became a defining moment for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young because it was only the second time the quartet had performed together.
"This is the second time we've ever played in front of people, man. We're scared sh–less," Stills told the crowd at the time.
In 1970, they released their first album with Young as a member.
Titled Déjà Vu, the album featured the hit songs "Teach Your Children," which peaked at No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100, and "Our House," which reached No. 30 on the chart.
After releasing two more albums, American Dream and Looking Forward in 1988 and 1999, respectively, the quartet's final run effectively ended in 2016.
Although the band broke up and reunited several times after its 1969 debut, it ultimately reached the end of its 47-year journey.
Unfortunately, the band's legacy was overshadowed by a bitter final breakup.
Nash blamed his departure on David Crosby, saying that his longtime bandmate's volatile behavior and treatment of those around him made it impossible to continue.
"Right now, I don't want anything to do with Crosby at all. It's just that simple," he mentioned in a statement as cited by Ultimate Classic Rock. "In my world there will never, ever be a Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young record and there will never be another Crosby, Stills & Nash record or show." He declined to say specifically what Crosby had done, simply saying that, "I was letting Crosby be who he is. I let people play their hand in front of me, and I let him do it and then I make a decision."
Another long-running feud developed between Crosby and Young, leading to a permanent, bitter estrangement that prompted the rhythm guitarist to call his bandmate selfish.
"He only thinks about Neil, period," Crosby said, per People, adding, "That's the only person he'll consider. Ever!"
The estrangement lasted until Crosby's death in 2023. Despite never fully reconciling, Young offered a respectful tribute to his former bandmate.
"David is gone, but his music lives on... The soul of CSNY, David's voice and energy were at the heart of our band,” he said, as mentioned by UCR, honoring Crosby's legacy.

Summer's longer and warmer days make this season the best time of year to browse flea markets. That said, summer flea markets tend to be larger and more crowded — with both people and products — making them a bit overwhelming for the underprepared shopper.
So, to help make the antiquing process more enjoyable, Parade spoke with four interior designers about what they're looking for in flea markets this July: Daniela Alilovic, the founder of online interior design platform Spaces by Dee; Nitya Seth, the Design Head of India-based firm Nityanamya; Kanika B. Khurana, the Principal of California-based firm Kanika Design; and Swati Goorha, the Founder and CEO of Swati Goorha Designs, which serves New York and New Jersey.
Although these four interior designers come from different corners of the world, they have something in common: they're all hoping to find vintage artwork at flea markets this summer. As they explained to Parade, whether you score an antique oil painting or a simple retro sketch, you're buying something unique that no one else will have.
"Newer art pieces tend not to have the same charm and history behind them, so I prefer to hunt in the flea market," Alilovic explains to Parade.

9 Things Designers Are Buying at Flea Markets This July1. ArtworkAlilovic, Seth, Goorha and Khurana will all be looking for artwork at flea markets this summer.
"I love the idea of finding older art pieces," says Alilovic, who's hoping to find artwork in vintage ornate gold frames. "I can either utilize only the frames, or I can keep the existing art pieces."
Seth is searching for abstract oil paintings from the 1960s and 1970s, explaining that "they add one-of-a-kind color to a room without the high prices of big galleries."
Goorha will be on the lookout for framed artwork, such as paintings, sketches and prints, especially ones in unique frames.
"Flea markets allow you to purchase art that is unique or has some type of personality as opposed to the generic and overproduced artwork found in stores," Goorha tells Parade.
And finally, Khurana will be looking for antique oil paintings, which she likes to incorporate into contemporary spaces. "I prefer to blend vintage artworks into modern home spaces to create a warm, unique spatial atmosphere that is not rigid or stereotypical," she says.
2. Handmade pottery and ceramicsKathrin Ziegler / Getty Images
"Handmade pottery is something you should always be on the lookout for," according to Goorha.
"It brings in some great texture and personality to an area without making it look too over-the-top with decoration," she adds. "Some of my favorite things about handmade pottery are earthy glazes, unique shapes, and items which will allow me to hang a branch, add some fresh flowers or just let them sit alone on a shelf."
3. A statement blanketWith fall already around the corner, Alilovic has her eyes peeled for a vintage wool blanket for her couch.
"I am on the hunt for a statement wool blanket," she says. "I want something that has an older style pattern, as if it comes from Grandma's closet. Something is comforting and cozy about vintage blankets, and I want to bring that feel into my living room."
4. Burled wood furnitureSeth believes July is the ideal time of year for for finding vintage Italian and French burled wood furniture. Burled wood, aka burl wood, has a natural "rich, wavy wood pattern" and is typically very expensive — but at a flea market, you might be able to score a good dea.
"These rare pieces add warmth and high-end texture to minimalist spaces" and can "serve as bold focal points in modern rooms," she explains.

5. Murano glass chandeliers"Mid-century Italian glass fixtures are a major July focus," according to Seth, who's particularly a fan of Murano glass chandeliers in fun colors.
"These colorful pieces bring artistic drama and soft light to formal entryways," she says.
6. Brass decorVintage brass should definitely be on your wishlist at flea markets this summer.
"Designers love scooping up tarnished trays, bowls, and candleholders," says Seth. "This metal adds a warm, metallic shine that makes rooms feel richer and more inviting."
Goorha says that her favorite antique brass item to hunt for is candlesticks.
"The brass decorative items can be easily carried to an area that is lacking in warmth and immediately bring a warm element into that space," Goorha explains. "Decorative candlesticks, trays, bookends, or small sculptural objects are all good candidates for placing on a shelf, mantle, or coffee table."
Khurana calls brass candlesticks a "timeless" furnishing item, whether it's polished or has a natural oxidized patina. "They can adorn dining tables, fireplace mantels, and bookshelves, and complement both traditional and contemporary home decor. I never pass up pieces of this type," she says.
7. MirrorsAccording to Goorha, vintage mirrors can "immediately add character and dimensionality to a space."
Specifically, she looks for vintage mirrors made with soft, aged glass, as these "can make an entryway, powder room, or console table seem much more thoughtful and curated than a new one."

"Vintage baskets are the most versatile accessories for home spaces," according to Khurana. "They can store miscellaneous items such as throw blankets and magazines, while also serving as wall decorations to add natural texture to a space."
9. Small solid wood furnitureKhurana is currently searching for small pieces of furniture made with solid wood, such as side tables, stools and benches.
"This type of furniture is sturdily built, easy to refinish, requires very little maintenance, and can add warmth and unique recognizability to home spaces," she explains.
Goorha has also been looking for some small wooden stools, as they are extremely flexible.
"They may be used next to a chair, in front of a tub, below a console table, or as an additional plant base," she says. "And just like most things that develop a bit of a patina (small imperfections), they seem to have been around a while and provide a comfortable 'homey' atmosphere."
How to Find Amazing Antiques at Flea MarketsSo you have your list of what you'd ideally like to find at a flea market... but how can you actually make sure you score these items?! Here are a few interior designer-approved tips.
1. Get there early"Professional dealers set up and sell the best treasures before normal buyers wake up," explains Seth. "Getting there early ensures you get first pick of rare, high-value items."
"Getting there earlier than others will give you a chance at getting some of the best furniture, artwork, and mirrors," adds Goorha.
2. Take your timeAlilovic recommends going slowly, especially when looking for artwork.
"At times, there are many art pieces stacked, and people do not take the time to look through the frames," she says. "You will miss out on some hidden gems at the flea market if you don't take the time to look!"
"With enough patience, visitors can find unexpected high-quality items," adds Khurana.
3. Shop for something timeless, not trendy"I never use whether an item is currently popular as a judgment criterion," says Khurana. "I take whether I will still like that item five to 10 years from now as my core standard, and I only choose pieces with excellent proportions, natural materials, and classic craftsmanship."
4. Don't judge the finishBoth interior designers note that a damaged finish — such as one with scratches and fading — can easily be repaired, and shouldn't prevent you from investing in a beautiful antique.
"Don't let perfection in finish, material, or color stop you from buying something with great potential," says Goorha. "What matters most are fit, shape, proportion, and quality of materials."
Khurana agrees, adding that "solid craftsmanship is the primary standard for assessment," not an item's current appearance.
5. Cultivate relationships with sellersBefriending sellers and dealers at your local flea market could be what helps you score your dream antique.
"Talk directly with regular sellers and tell them exactly what you need," advises Seth. "They will often call you first when they find special items that match your style."

Sharna Burgess Calls Out John Stamos Over 'Dancing With the Stars' Comments
Sharna Burgess is setting the record straight after John Stamos' recent comments about Dancing With the Stars.
Stamos, 62, appeared on season 27 winner Bobby Bones' The Bobbycast podcast, where he shared his reasoning for declining to appear on the ABC dance competition, despite being asked to join "every single season."
"I said, 'Don't ever ask me again. I'm never gonna do that show,'" the Full House alum told Bones, 46, during the July 7 episode.
"What makes that show good is people suffering and looking like fools. They're breaking their feet, calluses," he continued. "I don't want that."
Days after the interview, Burgess, 41, who was partnered with Bones when he won the Mirrorball Trophy in 2018, took to her Instagram Stories in a since-deleted video, where she explained why Stamos' comments bothered her.
"Why do I care because I’m not on the show? Because I was on the show for 15 years," Burgess began in a since-deleted video shared on her Instagram Story, according to EntertainmentNow. "Because the man that you’re speaking to is the man that I won with, who was the underdog, who laid it all out on the floor every time on what he did not start off being good at."
"That is the last thing Dancing With the Stars is about," she added.

Bones faced backlash over his victory, with both Dancing With the Stars co-host Julianne Hough and former host Tom Bergeron publicly saying they did not think the radio DJ deserved to win. The backlash became so severe, in fact, that Bones voluntarily returned his prize to producers.
Stamos jokingly referenced that same sentiment when speaking to Bones about his win and the controversy that followed.
"You shouldn't have won," Stamos quipped, arguing that his Fuller House costar Juan Pablo Di Pace, who competed during the same season as Bones, "got 10s all the way across the board, and you came in and somehow won."
Joking that the competition was "rigged, Stamos added, "I was gonna call ABC!"

However, Bones, who reconciled with Bergeron, 71, earlier this year after receiving an apology, now takes the criticism in stride, jokingly telling Stamos, "I'm the jackass!"
"I never had a plan to do it, but ABC, because I was going on my fourth season with Idol, said you needed to do that show as promotion," he continued, explaining that he had no dance experience before joining the series. "No one that has never danced has won, but I just kept blasting and I won."
And that's precisely why Bones believes Stamos would make the perfect Dancing With the Stars contestant.
"You would love it," Bones maintained. "You would learn so much about yourself."
