'70s Yacht Rock Icons, With 2 No. 1 Songs, Make Surprising Statement About the Beloved Genre

Thu, 05/21/2026 - 6:55pm

It's no secret that yacht rock is one of the most popular categories of music at the moment. Those in search of proof need look no further than Spotify, where the yacht rock playlist has nearly 2 million followers. But what exactly is yacht rock? As it turns out, some of the genre's most iconic stars don't even seem to know.

In a new interview with Guitar World, Doobie Brothers guitarists Tom Johnston, Patrick Simmons, and John McFee opened up about their decades-long career...and how they feel about their status as yacht rock legends.

“I’ve never even been on a yacht,” McFee admitted.

“I don’t even know what the term is supposed to mean — ‘yacht rock,'" Johnston added. "It just seems kind of absurd to me.”

View this post on Instagram

In truth, yacht rock doesn't really have much to do with boats at all. The term only dates back to about 2005, according to History, when music-loving friends JD Ryznar, Hunter Stair, Dave Lyons, Lane Farnham, and Steve Huey's comedy series Yacht Rock became a viral sensation.

“Fusing softer rock with jazz and R&B, very polished production, and being centered around that studio musician culture in Southern California in the late '70s and early '80s are the three main defining elements of yacht rock,” Huey explained in The Yacht Rock Book: The Oral History of the Soft, Smooth Sounds of the 70s and 80s by Greg Prato. “To us, it’s not just soft rock; it’s a specific subset of soft rock that ideally has those elements.”

“Apparently, we weren’t the first people to ever put those two words together. But it was popularized by the internet series, so as far as 99 percent of America is concerned, that is where the phrase came from,” Huey added.

Wherever "yacht rock" came from, at least the Doobie Brothers seem to agree on the fact that they're not fond of being described as such. As revealed in the GW interview, the band's friendships are a big part of what's kept them going for so long — though, as Simmons pointed out, they "have disagreements like anybody else."

“We’ve certainly had our moments when we’ve gotten on each other’s nerves, especially at the end of a tour when it’s like, ‘Oh, my God, is he gonna keep snoring when I’m trying to sleep?’" Simmons quipped. "But we’ve been lucky enough to sustain our relationships, and really, it’s all about the music. We’ve got great writers and players, and people love what we do.”

The Doobie Brothers still love performing live

When the Doobie Brothers head out on tour with Santana this summer, fans can expect to hear plenty of the band's biggest hits, which could include "Listen to the Music" and "What a Fool Believes," even though the group has played them countless times.

"People always ask me if I get tired of playing the same songs, and the answer is 'no,'" Johnston said. "They're hits, and I don't get tired of them because every night is different. The challenge is to just do my best every time we go out on the stage."

According to Johnston, the band's most popular songs are "still fun to play."

"What really makes them fun is the crowd," he explained. "The crowd’s reaction drives your exuberance for a song, because we played these songs to death. We've been playing them for over 50 years. When the crowd gets up and starts singing along and dancing and stuff, that makes it all worthwhile."

Just don't call it yacht rock.

New ’80s-Inspired Music Movie About a Lost Power Ballad Is Striking a Nostalgic Chord

Thu, 05/21/2026 - 6:40pm

In case you were hiding under a stack of vinyl and missed the news, we got you. There's a new film that should be on your radar: Power Ballad, a music comedy from the fantastic and fantastically musically inclined Irish director John Carney, is headed into theaters May 29, with tickets going on sale today.

View this post on Instagram

Co-starring Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas, the film made its world premiere at this year’s SXSWFilm Festival, with critics and fans alike raving. Its Rotten Tomatoes critics' score is sitting at an impressive 88% right now. And once you hear what it’s about, it’s pretty easy to see why.

The everyman’s everyman, Paul Rudd plays Rick, a former touring rocker and current wedding singer who lives in Ireland with his family and makes crowds go crazy with ’80s and ’90s hits. Carney told The Hollywood Reporter his inspiration for the character came when he spotted a 40-something dad in a Dublin suburb with a ponytail and a guitar.

“He had the walk of a rock star, but like a rock star for whom it hadn’t happened,” he said. “He was just this guy who just kind of does what every writer is looking for, which is just throw a ton of questions at you that you need to answer. When did he say, ‘I’m okay with not being Bono?’”

Meanwhile Nick Jonas, one-third of theJonas Brothers, obviously, co-stars as an apropos pop boy-bander named Danny, who is going through a few creative crises of his own.

One night, while drinking, jamming, and bonding, Rick plays an unreleased power ballad he once wrote, with Danny falling head over heels for it. Months later, Rick shockingly hears Danny singing his beloved song over a department store speaker. The realization sends Rick into revenge mode, on a mission to duke it out with Danny and get his song back.

Writer/director John Carney is no stranger to a music movie — or music; he calls himself a “failed band guy,” after all; he's since channeled his passion for music into film, and he's been really, really good at it.

Carney's breakout 2006 indie film, Once, is a stellar forbidden love story about an Irish busker and a Czech pianist that took home an Oscar. His follow-ups, including Sing Street, Begin Again, and Flora and Son, are all nothing short of spectacular. Seriously, we never leave a John Carney movie without feeling every single emotion on the spectrum: happy, heartbroken, overwhelming triumph.

His movies are therapy.

So, if you’re ready to get rocked by a film fueled by ’80s power-ballad nostalgia, boy-band fame, and songwriter egos bigger than arena speakers, grab your tickets now.

'90s Rock Supergroup Announces 2026 North America Tour 35 Years After Forming

Thu, 05/21/2026 - 6:35pm

Most music fans know Billie Joe Armstrong as the frontman of the iconic '90s punk rock group Green Day, and with good reason: Green Day is still just as popular as ever, as their massive 2025 tour proved. But, like so many rock stars, Armstrong has more than one musical iron in the fire — and now Pinhead Gunpowder, the beloved supergroup that serves as Armstrong's side project, is gearing up to hit the road.

As the band announced in a new Instagram post, Pinhead Gunpowder —which, in addition to Armstrong, includes Aaron Cometbus, Bill Schneider, and Green Day touring guitarist Jason White — will be heading out on a tour of North America this fall, kicking off on October 7 in Minneapolis. The jaunt will go on to include stops in cities including Detroit, NYC, Philadelphia, Seattle and San Francisco before it wraps up in Garden Grove, Calif., on Nov. 11.

View this post on Instagram

Fans on social media were thrilled to hear the news, with one writing, "This has been my dream since the 90s… and it’s finally coming true! Thank you for including Minneapolis!"

"This goes beyond the wildest dream. What an amazing gift, guys," added a second person, with a third commenter declaring, "THANK YOU FOR THAT DETROIT DATE!!!!! Giving me a reason to stay alive as always!!!"

Billie Joe Armstrong called Pinhead Gunpowder's 'supergroup' label absurd

In a 2024 interview with New Noise Magazine, Armstrong reflected on Pinhead Gunpowder's roots.

“It’s funny. I think we started calling it a project and as soon as we put out our first seven inch," recalls Armstrong {referring to the band's 1991 release).

“The snarky East Bay punk kids started calling us a super group, which was so absurd," he continued. "And it’s even more absurd thinking about it now. I think it sort of evolved into a real band just because it’s a real relationship and a real kind of work ethic that goes along with writing new material and getting together and jamming together, and just hanging out.”

As Armstrong explained, the fact that the members of the band have always brought their own individual experiences to the table "keeps things interesting."

“I learned from Aaron, and he talks about how much to write five pages of lyrics, but it’s also for me," he said. "I was so young when we started. When I was 18, it made me realize how important lyrics are in songs and stuff like that. And I think that’s one thing that I learned from Aaron in particular.”

“I think also we grew up together and we still are growing up kind of,” Cometbus added, noting that "Jason’s voice is better than it ever has been. It got richer, it got a little more of a swagger over time, a little more of a lip, a little more attitude, more life experience, and just more comfort. It’s cool too to get to a place where everyone has their own ideas and they’re more confident about them.”

Tickets for Pinhead Gunpowder's "Bum Rush" tour are on sale now.

The Real Reason These 7 Iconic ’80s Restaurant Chains Went Bankrupt

Thu, 05/21/2026 - 6:18pm

The 1980s were a golden era for restaurant chains. Across America, families piled into oversized booths beneath neon signs, salad bars stretched across dining rooms and themed restaurant concepts became destinations all their own. Casual dining exploded during the decade as chains raced to expand into growing suburbs, malls and highway exits, all while competing to offer bigger menus, louder branding and more over-the-top experiences.

For a while, the strategy worked. Chains like Chi-Chi's, Bennigan's and ShowBiz Pizza Place became cultural fixtures, helping define what a night out looked like for many families during the decade. Some specialized in theatrical dining experiences, while others leaned heavily into oversized portions, themed decor or family-friendly entertainment.

But many of those once-packed chains eventually collapsed under the weight of changing consumer trends, mounting debt, over-expansion or concepts that simply stopped evolving with the times. In many cases, the food itself wasn’t necessarily the problem. Instead, these brands struggled to adapt as diners began prioritizing fresher ingredients, faster service, updated menus and more modern restaurant vibes.

Some filed for bankruptcy after expanding too aggressively, while others faded as newer chains captured younger diners. A few still technically exist in limited form, but they have nowhere near the cultural dominance they once enjoyed during the mall-dining heyday of the 1980s.

Take a look back at some of the decade's most iconic restaurant chains and see how many you remember.

’80s Restaurant Chains That Went Bankrupt

These are the restaurant chains from the '80s we wish were still around now.

1. Chi-Chi's

At its peak, Chi-Chi’s helped introduce many Americans to a commercialized version of Mexican dining, complete with fried ice cream, colorful interiors and massive combo platters. But the chain struggled with growing competition in the casual dining space, and it suffered a major blow following a 2003 hepatitis outbreak tied to green onions served at one of its locations. The company filed for bankruptcy shortly afterward, and its remaining restaurants eventually disappeared from the U.S.

2. Bennigan's

Known for its Monte Cristo sandwich and Irish pub-inspired atmosphere, Bennigan’s became one of the defining casual dining chains of the 1980s and ’90s. But heavy debt and aggressive expansion ultimately hurt the company. Its parent company Metromedia Restaurant Group filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in 2008, leading to the closure of most Bennigan's locations across the country.

3. Arthur Treacher's

Long before modern fast-casual seafood chains became popular, Arthur Treacher’s built its reputation on British-style fish and chips. The chain grew rapidly during the 1970s and early 80s, but it later struggled with rising prices during what became known as the “Cod Wars,” creating major problems for a restaurant built around traditional cod-based fish and chips. The chain eventually switched to cheaper pollock in an effort to cut costs, but many customers and franchisees felt the quality declined. Combined with growing fast-food competition and aggressive expansion, the move helped accelerate the brand’s downfall. Once numbering in the hundreds, the chain eventually dwindled to only a handful of surviving locations.

4. The Magic Pan

When crêpes went mainstream: The Magic Pan Restaurant (‘70s-‘90s)

The Magic Pan stood out for its elaborate crêpes and upscale mall-friendly atmosphere. During the 1980s, the chain became known for theatrical open kitchens and dessert crêpes that felt sophisticated at the time. But changing dining habits and the decline of mall culture made it harder for niche concepts like The Magic Pan to survive long term. The final locations eventually closed in the 1990s.

5. Old Country Buffet

Buffet destinations once thrived in the expanding suburban dining scene of the 1980s, and Old Country Buffet became one of the category’s biggest names thanks to endless carving stations, dessert bars and low prices. But buffet-style dining gradually lost favor as consumers became more health-conscious and competitors introduced fresher made-to-order options. The company’s parent organization filed for bankruptcy multiple times, and the COVID pandemic further accelerated the decline of buffet chains nationwide.

6. ShowBiz Pizza Place

The golden age that was ShowBiz Pizza and (Chuck E. Cheese) Pizza Time Theatre in the 80's. With a great arcade and creepy animatronic bands that entertained you while you ate pizza and your parents drank beer.

Before many kids knew Chuck E. Cheese, they knew ShowBiz Pizza Place and its animatronic Rock-afire Explosion band. The arcade-and-pizza concept became wildly popular during the 1980s family entertainment boom. But corporate mergers, costly technology upkeep and growing competition eventually pushed the brand into bankruptcy protection and eventual consolidation. ShowBiz locations were ultimately absorbed and rebranded under the Chuck E. Cheese name.

7. Fuddruckers

Fuddruckers

Fuddruckers built its reputation on oversized customizable burgers, in-house bakery buns and self-serve toppings bars complete with unlimited cheese sauce. At its height Fuddruckers operated between 200-500 locations internationally (reports vary). But the massive restaurant footprints and operational costs that once helped the chain stand out became harder to sustain over time. After years of declining sales and shifting consumer preferences, its then-parent-company Magic Brands LLC filed for bankruptcy in 2020, shuttering the majority of Fuddruckers restaurants.

The brand was eventually acquired by fellow Texas restaurant Luby's Cafeteria, and it currently has 52 locations with plans for further expansion.

Why So Many ’80s Restaurant Chains Struggled to Survive

While some of these chains still survive in limited form or through licensing deals, their heyday reflects a very specific era of American dining. During the 1980s, bigger often seemed better, whether that meant sprawling buffet lines, themed dining rooms, arcade-filled restaurants or oversized menus that tried to offer something for everyone. But as dining trends shifted toward convenience, freshness and more modern concepts, many of these once-dominant chains struggled to keep up.

In many cases, the downfall wasn’t caused by one single issue. Aggressive expansion, rising operating costs, changing consumer habits and mounting debt all played a role. Some chains also struggled to evolve as diners began favoring faster service, updated interiors, healthier options and more focused menus. Today, these former restaurant giants remain nostalgic reminders of a time when dining out was often as much about the experience as the food itself.

1969 Folk Rock Hit, Inspired by a Novel, Ranked Among 'Best Sad Songs' of All Time

Thu, 05/21/2026 - 6:09pm

Since her debut in the '60s, singer-songwriter Joni Mitchellhas dazzled fans with her sweet voice, her abilities on the mountain dulcimer, and contemplative lyrics.

One of her most beloved songs is her 1969 hit, "Both Sides Now," which was named the number 2 "best sad song ever written" by Time Out magazine.

Far Out magazine reported that Mitchell discussed writing the emotional tune, off her 1969 album, Clouds, in a 1998 interview with the Toronto Globe and Mail. Far Out magazine noted that Mitchell made the choice for her young daughter to be adopted by a different family in 1965. In addition, she and her ex-husband, Chuck Mitchell, who was not the biological father of the child, finalized their divorce in 1967 after only two years of marriage.

While speaking to the Toronto Globe and Mail, Mitchell said she decided to read Henderson the Rain King by Saul Bellow amid her personal issues. According to Mitchell, the 1959 novel spurred the idea for "Both Sides Now," which she penned in 1966.

"I was reading Saul Bellow’s Henderson the Rain King on a plane and early in the book Henderson the Rain King is also up in a plane. He’s on his way to Africa and he looks down and sees these clouds. I put down the book, looked out the window and saw clouds too, and I immediately started writing the song. I had no idea that the song would become as popular as it did," said Mitchell in the 1998 interview, per Far Out magazine.

In a 2022 interview for Apple Music, alongside fellow performer Elton John, Mitchell said that she faced mockery after writing the somber, reflective song at such a young age.

"I wrote it when I was in my early 20s. And I took a lot of ridicule for it, you know, 'What do you know about life? You're only 21,'" recalled the "Big Yellow Taxi" singer.

She clarified that she's aware the song isn't meant for a novice.

"I think I finally became an old lady myself and could sing the song right," said Mitchell, now 82, with a laugh.

Far Out magazine reported that Judy Collins was the one to popularize the song with her 1967 version of "Both Sides Now."

One of the Most Anticipated Romantasy Books of 2026 Doesn’t Even Have a Title Yet — But Being on the List Isn’t Surprising!

Thu, 05/21/2026 - 5:52pm

As we reach the summer, many of us are looking ahead at what’s to come. Goodreads users are already prepared for the rest of 2026, with some highly anticipated reads across the genres. It’s not that surprising that one of the surprise book announcements of 2026 has become one of the highly anticipated romantasy books of the rest of the year, and it doesn’t even have a title, yet!

Yes, it’s all about the currently untitled sixth book in the A Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J. Maas. Maas had everyone talking when she went on the “Call Me Daddy” podcast to share the news that she had not one but two ACOTAR books in the works, with the first to come in October 2026.

It is one of nine romantasy titles that Goodreads users are looking forward to. While it sits at the bottom of the list, that’s simply due to the release date. This list is in release date order, with The Exquisite Torment of Loving Your Enemy by Brigitte Knightly as the one at the top of the list with a July 7, 2026 release date.

WATERBURY, CT JUNE 17: Barnes & Noble in Waterbury display of the popular books by Sarah J. Maas.Maas's has sold 3.1 million print books, according to Circana. (Jim Shannon/Connecticut Post via Getty Images)

The best part is not only does it not have a title yet, but it doesn’t even have a blurb! The cover is also still to be revealed.

It just shows the power of the brand. Maas’ fans are loyal to her books, and they have been ready for a sixth book in the series since the release of A Court of Silver Flames in 2021. To get two within the space of a few months of each other is virtually unheard of, and the seventh book is sure to be on the list of most anticipated books of 2027.

ACOTAR 6 is slated to be released on October 27, 2026. It will be followed by the seventh book on January 12, 2027. There are already debates on what fans would like to see, including mixed opinions on Azriel and Elaine and Azriel and Gwynriel getting together. The wait is almost over!

Anthropologie’s 'Dainty' $18 Crystal Necklace Goes With Everything and Comes in 5 Colors

Thu, 05/21/2026 - 5:30pm

Parade aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

Jewelry tends to fall into two camps — the pieces you save for special occasions and the ones that never really leave your rotation. It’s the second category that ends up mattering more: the easy, throw-on-and-go styles that work with everything and make even the most basic outfit feel carefully curated.

Pendant necklaces are especially a staple in that lineup, and right now, Anthropologie has one that feels especially worth scooping up. Included in Anthropologie’s Sale on Sale for Memorial Day weekend, the Suspended Crystal Link Necklace is down to just $18 from its usual $48 price, which comes out to 62% off. It’s an easy, under-$20 find that feels like a small treat but works like a true essential and will likely end up being something you’ll reach for day after day.

This necklace looks simple at first glance — but the more you notice the details, the more elevated it actually looks. The paperclip-style links are slim, slightly rounded, and polished to a soft shine, with one side featuring smaller links and the other longer ones for a subtle, asymmetrical touch. At the center, a single cubic zirconia stone (available in five colors) is set horizontally with four delicate prongs, allowing light to pass through and create a clean, glassy sparkle. The stone itself leans more refined, with an emerald-cut-inspired look that gives the necklace a more elevated look than a typical everyday piece.

Finished in 14-karat gold-plated brass, this necklace comes in both warm gold-tone and cool silver-tone options. It also features a lobster claw clasp with an adjustable extender, so you can easily tweak the length.

Because the design is so clean and linear, it’s incredibly easy to style. The necklace looks especially good with open necklines, like tanks, slip dresses, or an unbuttoned shirt, where the stone can really stand out. The paperclip chain makes it great for layering with chunkier pieces or shorter chokers, but it looks just as good worn alone. It hits that sweet spot between timeless and trend-forward — a piece that feels current now but won’t look dated in a year.

Jewelry lovers had plenty of praise for this “delicate,” “classy,” and “simple but elegant” piece, with many noting that it “pairs well with all outfits.” One shopper wrote, “This necklace is a dainty piece, but the paper clip chain sets it apart and definitely makes it noticeable,” adding that they’ve “bought several as gifts.”

Iconic Songwriter, 68, Stuns with Emotional Performance of 'Legendary' Song Johnny Cash Once Covered

Thu, 05/21/2026 - 5:25pm

In the singer-songwriter canon, one of the most unique musicians I can think of is the Australian legend Nick Cave.

The gothic singer is best known for his project, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, a tour de force of stylistic marriages with musical storytelling. In a similar way to how Paul Thomas Anderson is in a love affair with the film epic, Nick Cave is a creative, who to me, is obsessed with the idea of the song.

Every Nick Cave song is an elaborate, grandiose, and sweeping journey. Listening to one of his songs is like being immersed in some grand drama. In shades of sometimes Shakespeare and other times Melville, Cave paints these intricate stories of death, love, violence, and religion. One of the most emblematic of these is his 1988 classic, "The Mercy Seat." He's on tour right now, and he recently gave us a stunning version of the song, stripped back to just his voice and the piano.

@nickcave

The Mercy Seat, alone at Alexandra Palace #NickCave

♬ The Mercy Seat - Remastered 2010 - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds

"The Mercy Seat" was notably covered by Johnny Cash during my favorite period of his career, where in his later years, he took on the songwriting canon and gave us some of music's greatest covers.

The song is classic Nick Cave, following the final thoughts of a death row inmate as he contemplates his impending appointment with the electric chair. The Bad Seeds back up his sardonic vocals masterfully with an instrumental that builds and builds until it reaches a boiling point that never breaks. It's one of the best musical representations of rising tension I've ever heard.

In the London show linked above, all of the musical flair is gone, leaving Cave and the piano. It showcases one of the things I love about him as a musician -- at the core of the grandiosity and magnitude of the original, it's a song about a man facing his own death. There's a great wealth of emotion and honesty that comes out in this take of the song, and fans were very moved.

"Masterpiece."

"Such a good song, and such a good record."

"Legendary."

Nick Cave is an enigmatic and fascinating songwriter. If anybody is getting into him for the first time, I highly recommend "Let Love In," or "Murder Ballads." They really get to the core of what Cave does so, so well.

Legendary ’70s Rock Star Faces Increasing Death Threats Amid Latest Tour

Thu, 05/21/2026 - 5:24pm

MAGA is not happy with The Boss

Though the Make American Great Again crowd might have their qualms with President Donald Trump at the moment, we’re instead referring to Bruce Springsteen, one of the defining voices of classic rock and roll.

According to the Daily Mail, the rock star has gotten a slew of increased death threats while traveling across the country on his Land of Hope and Dreams Tour. In response, Springsteen and his E Street Band have been forced to “beef up” their security.

View this post on Instagram

“This tour has been a little bit different because of the high security,” Steven Van Zandt, the E Street Band’s longtime guitarist, told the outlet. “It's a very specific political theme to this tour and there's been a lot of threats, death threats. Usually there's always some, but this time it's been increasing.”

It’s no secret that The Boss, 76, is no fan of President Trump, 79; he’s voiced his criticisms of the president and his administration onstage at concerts, on late-night programming, and beyond, taking aim at the war in Iran and ICE immigration policies and enforcement.

The star even reworked the lyrics of his 1993 hit "Streets of Philadelphia" into an anti-ICE protest song. Released earlier this year, "Streets of Minneapolis" is Springsteen's response to the killings of Renée Good and Alex Pretti, which occurred during Operation Metro Surge in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The song debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Digital Song Sales Chart.

The two have even traded jabs publicly, with Springsteen calling the president “corrupt, incompetent and treasonous,” and Trump calling the rocker a “dried out prune,” per Ultimate Classic Rock. It’s all very well documented

Springsteen’s latest tour, a politically charged event he said was going to be “very topical about what’s going on the country,” kicked off in April in Minneapolis. The tour will conclude at the end of this month in Philadelphia, following stops in Cleveland, Boston, and Washington, D.C.

“It's not like we're saying something that's not true or we're saying something that's so really particularly controversial, but it's specifically political,” Van Zandt added. “So the FBI and others have been really watching things and been overly concerned about it, as they should be. We want the fans to be safe and feel safe. So we really go the extra mile with extra security for that reason alone.”

Nancy Guthrie Update: New Theory Emerges Behind Abduction as Expert Weighs In

Thu, 05/21/2026 - 5:19pm

A new theory has emerged in the abduction of Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie's mother, Nancy Guthrie, and an expert just weighed in on the possibility of the 84-year-old's abduction being a "wrench attack."

On Thursday, May 21, Lisa J. Miller—a retired detective and Colorado Attorney General's Office law enforcement executive—spoke with Fox News Digital about the theory. Reporter Michael Ruiz summarized the conversation in a post shared on X.

Traditionally, a wrench attack involves a "mastermind" criminal identifying a target remotely from a computer and then recruiting a local "thug" to carry out violence against them, Miller explained. The mastermind remotely plans out the attack and pays the local guy a portion of the money to torture information out of the victim (or, they kidnap a relative) to extort money.

Miller noted that the term "wrench attack" came from a 2009 web comic about a hacker buying a $5 wrench to beat someone to obtain a password.

"The street level thug theory fits with what we’re seeing in the Guthrie case, because when the FBI released the pictures of this porch guy, and I’ve referred to him from the beginning as 'porch monster,' I mean, the guy comes across as a bit of a doofus," Miller told Fox News Digital. "Look at his getup, look at how he carries his firearm… Yet, there’s some very sophisticated elements to this case that again falls in line with what we see in a traditional wrench attack."

🚨🔎🚨 A NEW theory in the unsolved suspected abduction of Nancy Guthrie is a so-called wrench attack.

The emerging trend is a combination of a "mastermind" plotter sitting at a computer, probably overseas, and street-level thugs hired locally to carry out the abduction and… pic.twitter.com/nEsOUbvfbf

Miller also pointed to Savanah's "sizable income," between her Today salary, bonuses, book deals, and more, as the motivation.

She continued, "Somehow, he came across Savannah Guthrie. Her mom was on television multiple times, on the Today show with Savannah—even, I think the latest was in 2025. So he sees a vulnerability... the vulnerability is an 84-year-old elderly woman living alone."

Additionally, she pointed out that the language Savannah used in the ransom videos indicated that the FBI "was taking these first notes seriously." Miller, ultimately, said she thinks there is still hope that someone will come forward with information.

A spokesperson for the Pima County Sheriff's Department told the outlet via email that it has not dealt with "wrench attack" crimes.

"The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has not received any reports referencing ‘wrench attacks’ in our community," the PCSD representative wrote. "The investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance remains active and ongoing. When there is a significant update, it will be shared publicly."

As of writing, no suspect has been named in Nancy's case despite more than $1 million in reward money.

What do you think of the "wrench attack" theory?

NASCAR Legend Kyle Busch Dead at 41

Legendary NASCAR driver Kyle Busch has tragically died at the age of 41.

The heartbreaking news was announced by NASCAR on social media.

"We are saddened and heartbroken to share the news of the passing of Kyle Busch, a two-time Cup champion and one of our sport's greatest and fiercest drivers. He was 41 years old," the post read. "We extend our deepest condolences to the Busch family, Richard Childress Racing and the entire motorsports community."

This comes after it was reported by ESPN that Busch was hospitalized due to a severe illness, which was going to force him to miss Sunday's Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The Busch family, as well as his racing team, Richard Childress Racing, shared a joint statement as well.

"Our entire NASCAR family is heartbroken by the loss of Kyle Busch. A future Hall of Famer, Kyle was a rare talent, one who comes along once in a generation. He was fierce, he was passionate, he was immensely skilled, and he cared deeply about the sport and fans. NASCAR lost a giant of the sport today, far too soon," the statement read.

"During this incredibly difficult time, we ask everyone to respect the family's privacy and continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Further updates will be shared as appropriate."

Across his career, Busch won 63 races, with over 762 career starts. He won the championship in 2015 and 2019.

'Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage' Finale Sneak Peek: Mandy and Jim Take Over the Shop (Exclusive)

Thu, 05/21/2026 - 5:06pm

Across two seasons of Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage, Mandy (Emily Osment) has worn her fair share of hats. She's been a waitress, as well as a weathercaster and news reporter for multiple channels. But, in the Season 2 finale of the Young Sheldon spinoff, she's stepping out of her comfort zone — and into a set of coveralls.

In an exclusive sneak peek of the episode, airing tonight on CBS, Georgie (Montana Jordan) and Ruben (Jessie Prez) both undergo food poisoning. With the auto service store left unmanned, Jim (Will Sasso), their old boss, steps in to help. And he's looking for some family to help, though it's safe to say Mandy may not be as much of a natural as her dad.

'Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage' Season 2 Finale Sneak Peek (1:01)

The clip opens with Mandy happening upon Jim holding a tire, as he delicately runs it through a container of water. "Well, what are you doing here?" she cheerfully asks. "You giving the tire a bath?"

"I'm looking for air bubbles," Jim tersely replies. "That's how you know where the hole is."

"Oh, Cece likes to make little fart bubbles in the tub," Mandy replies. "She thinks it's hilarious." Jim doesn't dignify that with a response, instead spotting the hole in the tire that he was looking for. Intrigued, Mandy asks what the next step in the process is.

"Well, if it's on the sidewall, you need a new tire," he explains. "But this is on the tread, so we can patch it."

"Don't we make more money selling new tires?" Mandy asks, not wanting to quite literally leave money on the table.

"Yeah, but it's a little dishonest."

"Just a little?" Mandy scoffs. "I'm ok with that."

Jim is clearly getting visibly annoyed, both with his daughter's constant distractions and her insinuation of unscrupulous upselling. He quickly changes the subject, asking, "Hey, you know what would be really helpful? You run and grab us lunch."

"Are you trying to get rid of me?"

"Yeah," Jim instantly replies.

"Well, that's a little mean."

"Just a little? I'm ok with that," Jim says, in a fantastic callback. Mandy, resigned to her fate, walks out of the shop. Jim excitedly grabs and shakes the tire, exclaiming, "She's gonna bring me chili!"

Regardless of what lunch item Mandy procures, it's safe to say the reception from her father as a co-worker is definitely chilly. Will father and daughter be able to get on the same page to hold down the fort? Or will the tension cause a hole in their relationship that may not be so easy to patch up?

Check out an exclusive sneak peek of the Season 2 finale of Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage above. The episode airs tonight at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.

Five Below's Stunning New Cordless Lamp Brings an Ethereal Glow to Any Space For Only $7

Thu, 05/21/2026 - 5:05pm

Let's talk lamps—are you ready? Because here's the deal—we all need them unless, for some reason, you prefer to live in complete darkness all of the time. Which, if we're being realistic, makes it really difficult to do anything around your home without injuring yourself in some way. Like, even if you're more of a dimmed, mood lighting kind of person, you still need something that offers a glow.

For myself, I appreciate a lamp more and more as I get older. Good lighting is everything. And with the barrage of cordless lamps on the market (and cute ones, too!), there's really no excuse not to have ambient light around your home, whether there's an outlet nearby or not. And those little puck lights? Well, they really give you no excuse not to get creative with a room's lighting strategy.

Glass Lamp, $7 at Five Below

Five Below

This pretty glass lamp at Five Below is battery-operated (look, mom, no cords) and has that trendy mushroom shape that so many people are loving right now. It comes in a sort of ombre blue colorway, as shown above, as well as the prettiest pink floral motif option. You really can't go wrong with either one; it just depends on the aesthetic you're going for in your home.

It's made of glass (no plastic situation here—which would be weird for a lamp) and requires three 1.5V AA alkaline batteries. Nope, batteries aren't included. For $7, no real surprise there.

You could set this little cutie up on a nightstand, on an outdoor table (just bring it inside when not in use), in a glass-doored cabinet or anywhere else that could benefit from a little extra light.

I'm kind of obsessed with all things Five Below at the moment. There's a really elegant eight-piece organizer set that's perfect for storing items on a vanity or corralling craft supplies, and a matching lazy Susan is available. If you're feeling outdoorsy, Five Below's sleek roll-up table is perfect for park get-togethers with friends. And last, but certainly not least, there are some $7 washable rugs that give any room a hit of dopamine decor that just feels extra special.

The best Five Below finds tend to sell out fast, so if you see something you love, it's best to pick it up while you can.

White House Fires Back With Blunt Statement After Country Legend’s Vulgar Comments About Trump

Thu, 05/21/2026 - 4:50pm

The White House and Natalie Maines of The Chicks (Formerly known as the Dixie Chicks) appear to be in the middle of a war of words.

After the country music trio’s outspoken frontwoman, 51, first voiced her opinion on social media, criticizing President Donald Trump, 79, a spokesperson for The White House has now taken action, blasting the singer.

"Natalie Maines is a despicable nobody who clearly suffers from a severe case of Trump Derangement Syndrome that has rotted her peanut-sized brain," White House spokesperson Davis Ingle told Fox News, in response to Maines’ recent political rant, according to USA Today

Trump, himself, has not publicly commented on the subject, but Ingle’s statement comes after Maine took aim at the current administration and at Trump, calling him a highly derogatory name that was once used in the film Mean Girls, during which Regina George criticized a classmate in the burn book. Maines wanted to make it known that she felt the United States of America’s democracy is fading in plain sight.

"Our democracy is disappearing right before our eyes. This fugly sl—t is using your gas money to pay the insurrectionists,” Maines captioned a slideshow of images featuring one of Trump and others of the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection on Instagram on Monday, May 18. “But don’t worry about it. I’m sure posting selfies will fix everything."

She added, "My last post that called him a fugly sl—t got removed. We’ll see how long this one lasts. Repost and help the message live."

This isn’t the first time Maines has become a lightning rod for political criticism. The Dixie Chicks, originally formed in Dallas, Texas, are no strangers to sharing their political opinions, having been the center of controversy in the past.

In 2003, during the Iraq War, Maines, at a London concert, directed a comment toward George W. Bush, saying that she and her band were ashamed that the then-President was from Texas. The comment drew widespread backlash from fans and radio programmers, many of whom pulled The Chicks’ music from radio airwaves.

Maines has already responded to the White House's comments.

In a statement on Thursday, May 21, she told USA Today: "This nobody American stands by her post.”

Jeneva Rose’s Next Book Is Nothing Like You’ve Read From Her Before

Thu, 05/21/2026 - 4:48pm

Any Jeneva Rose fan fell in love with The Perfect Marriage and then followed up quickly with The Perfect Divorce. The “Queen of Twists” has become a bestselling author, with her work translated into 28 languages.

Sure enough, fans are excited about her next thriller, which she recently announced would be titled Dead Girl Summer. It’s scheduled to be released sometime in spring 2027, but you don’t need to wait that long for another book from the thriller icon.

There’s another book coming later this year, but it’s different from everything she’s written before. Sometimes I Scare Myself is her first foray into the horror genre, which is one that she enjoys reading, and she decided it was time to delve into.

This isn’t just one horror story, though. Think of it a little more as Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark or what a collection of Are You Afraid of the Dark? stories could have been in written form. Sometimes I Scare Myself will have three stories in one.

Courtesy of Blackstone Publishing

The first is titled Never Kill the Medium, which takes place at a 30th birthday party. Never have a birthday party in a horror, as someone always turns up dead! In this case, a playful seance goes wrong when the ritual spirals out of control and the medium dies. This isn’t a case of finding out who did it, but about staying alive after something dark is allowed to cross over the void.

Then in The Nightmare House, we get a start of many good horror stories: a family moving into what should be their forever home. It’s a quiet neighborhood, but any horror fan knows that’s deceiving. Maybe the family should have done their homework before moving in, because there’s a dark secret about every single person who once lived there, and now the Daltons could be the next victims.

Finally, we get All Curses Are Final, which takes us to a remote winter cabin, where a group of friends head for a vacation. On the way, they stop at a roadside store that literally warns everyone that all the items are cursed. That curse is removed at the time of sale, but when one of the group finds an item she didn’t pay for in her bag, all hell breaks loose.

There isn’t much longer left to wait for the New York Times bestseller to release her first horror novel. Look out for the release on September 22, 2026. Now is the time to get those preorders in, so any curses are lifted right away!

1977 Rock Classic About a 'Cold-Hearted Bad Girl' Almost Didn't Make It on the Album

Thu, 05/21/2026 - 4:43pm

Love might stink sometimes, but it certainly has inspired some of the catchiest songs in history...even when (or maybe especially when) the tune is about a romance gone sour.

Take Foreigner's classic hit, "Cold As Ice." The 1977 single, from the band's eponymous debut album, was written from the perspective of someone who's recently been hurt by a decidedly less-than-sensitive lover:

"You're as cold as ice / You're willing to sacrifice our love / You never take advice / Someday you'll pay the price, I know"

As Foreigner guitarist Mick Jones told Classic Rock, the lyrics were inspired by the "idea of the stereotypical cold-hearted, bad girl — the sort of woman Joan Crawford would play in a film."

"It wasn’t aimed at anyone specific," he continued, adding, "Well, there was one girl at school that dumped me, so maybe that trauma stayed with me over the years and subconsciously filtered in! The other contributing factor was that it was about minus 20 degrees in New York at the time we were writing it, which may have fed into the atmosphere."

Even though "Cold As Ice" ended up being one of Foreigner's biggest hits ever, it wasn't originally meant to be on the album. But when producer Gary Lyons decided one of the tunes on the roster didn't fit the album's vibe, Jones got to work writing a substitute.

"I had bought a mini-piano, a Melody Grand, and I started to fiddle around on it, and hit upon a couple of interesting chords that I’d never played before," he explained. "Lou [Gramm] came around to the house and I just threw it out there and we started fleshing it out. I’d never written a full song on piano before and I was rather surprised how quickly I took to it. The piano I played in the studio was actually one that Atlantic had bought specifically for Aretha Franklin."

'Cold As Ice' was Foreigner's 'poppiest' song

"It’s a strange, quirky little song, basically a pop song written back to front," Jones pointed out. "The structure is unusual: it starts with the title, and it’s only further down the line that you realize that the pre-chorus is actually the chorus. I knew it was the poppiest song we’d done, which I was a little worried about, but everybody seemed to dig it. I didn’t see it being indicative f the direction of Foreigner, so it was a bit of a surprise addition to the album. But one thing I wanted to do with Foreigner was to show that the band had some versatility, and this was definitely different and a bit commercial, not just another hard rock song."

"Cold As Ice" went on to peak at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 on Oct. 22, 1977.

"I must admit though that I was surprised when it went into the Top 10 in America," Jones said. "But then we were a new band, and everything was exciting and surprising at the time. I guess radio was ready to see what we had next."

As Jones went on to say, "Cold As Ice" is a "big one" for Foreigner fans.

"It’s a proper singalong at gigs, everyone likes to belt it out. It’s a bit of an oddity, but it’s done very well for us. I guess it’s part of our identity now," he said.

And to think, the song might never have happened if Jones didn't get dumped when he was still in school.
