Southwest Passengers Are Baffled by This New, Weird Takeoff Policy

Thu, 03/12/2026 - 9:07am

Air travel is filled with rituals. Shoes off at security. Phones on airplane mode. Tray tables locked upright. But lately, some passengers say they have heard a new and unexpected instruction during takeoff: Don’t put anything in the seat-back pocket.

For travelers who treat that small fabric pouch like a mini carry-on, the idea feels almost absurd. On a recent Southwest flight, one traveler posted on Reddit flight attendants repeatedly announced that nothing could be stored in the pocket during takeoff or landing. If you fly often, you know the seat pocket is practically sacred territory. It holds everything from boarding passes to paperback novels. So what exactly is going on here?

Subscribe to our newsletter and get awesome stories like this delivered straight to your inbox!

Why a Simple Seat Pocket Is Suddenly Raising Questions in the Air

The conversation began after a traveler flying from Las Vegas to Denver said they heard an unusual announcement on a flight with Southwest Airlines. Flight attendants reportedly instructed passengers to remove everything from the seat-back pocket during taxi, takeoff, and landing, and it was something they'd never heard of.

"I always have my kindle, snacks, and phone out of my bag before taking off and put them in the pocket so they’re accessible," the Redditor explained. "I keep my backpack under the seat but I’m short and prefer window seats so have a really hard time getting into my bag once someone is next to me and we are moving."

Online, frequent flyers quickly weighed in, saying they had never heard such a rule before. Some travelers said they had experienced similar instructions recently, while others believed it may have been a crew-specific safety preference rather than a standard airline policy.

"Never heard that one before. Have travelled six times in the past 2 months," wrote one Redditor. "This is just getting out of control. They are just making stuff up as they go, I guess."

"It’s like there were directives pushed down to make customers as miserable as possible," added another.

Related: Southwest Finally Addresses Outcry Over Major Changes

Part of the confusion is that publicly available guidance from Southwest Airlines does not clearly ban items in seat pockets during takeoff or landing. Most airline safety rules focus on larger hazards such as tray tables being upright, bags stored properly, and aisles remaining clear.

Airlines also follow safety guidance from the Federal Aviation Administration, which generally allows passengers to use small electronic devices in airplane mode during all phases of flight. However, flight attendants still have discretion to enforce additional precautions if loose items could pose a safety risk during turbulence or an emergency.

Do Other Airlines Have Similar Rules?

Some flight attendants discourage storing heavier items such as laptops in seat pockets because they can fall out during turbulence. In fact, safety concerns around loose cabin items have led airlines to introduce other unusual policies in recent years. For example, Southwest implemented rules requiring portable battery packs used for charging devices to remain visible during flight rather than hidden inside bags so crew members can quickly respond to potential overheating.

That kind of safety logic could also explain why some flight crews might discourage items in seat pockets during critical phases of flight. Still, the lack of a clearly communicated policy leaves travelers guessing. And frequent flyers do not love surprises at 35,000 feet.

The Truth About Seat-Back Pockets: They’re Kind of Gross

If you have ever reached into a seat pocket and pulled out a sticky candy wrapper or crumpled napkin, you already know the answer. Cabin crews work hard to tidy the aircraft between flights, but seat pockets are notoriously difficult to clean thoroughly.

Over the years, flight attendants have reported finding all kinds of forgotten or discarded items inside. Among the most common things discovered in seat-back pockets are:

  • Half-eaten snacks and candy wrappers
  • Used tissues and napkins
  • Empty drink cups or cans
  • Boarding passes and travel documents from previous passengers
  • Sticky gum or food residue
  • Occasionally even motion sickness bags that were actually used

On a busy travel day when planes turn around quickly, those pockets often get only a quick glance rather than a deep clean. Many seasoned travelers now avoid placing personal items there entirely. Phones, headphones, and snacks often end up in a small pouch or travel organizer instead.

Personally, I stopped using the seat pocket after discovering a crushed granola bar and mystery crumbs inside one. It was a reminder that thousands of passengers pass through that same seat each year.

View this post on Instagram The Bigger Trend: Airline Rules Are Changing Fast

The seat-pocket debate also reflects something larger happening in air travel right now. Airlines are adjusting policies at a rapid pace. Boarding processes are evolving. Cabin designs are changing. Even longtime traditions are disappearing. Southwest also recently ended its signature open seating system after more than five decades, shifting to assigned seats which started in early 2026.

For travelers, that constant change can make flying feel unpredictable. The lesson is simple. Airline rules are not always universal, and sometimes they depend on the crew, the aircraft, or the airline’s evolving safety guidelines. So the next time you hear a new instruction during takeoff, do not be surprised. Just hold onto your phone and maybe keep that granola bar in your bag.

1983 Track Ranked the Most 'Terrible Song' From a Great Album

Thu, 03/12/2026 - 9:05am

While hit albums are praised as a whole, not every song on the tracklist is a No.1 hit, like a 1983 song by The Police. The iconic rock band struck gold with their fifth and final studio album, but critics believe "Mother" was a track that should have never made the cut.

Rolling Stone compiled a list of 50 songs that have been deemed terrible from what are arguably some of the greatest albums to ever be released. The list ranges from hits from famed icons like The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Pixies, and even rock legends like Guns N' Roses. The Police managed to take the No. 1 spot on the list for "Mother," which was released on their final album titled Synchronicity.

On the album, guitarist Andy Summers is credited as the writer for the album, having gotten his inspiration from his overbearing relationship with his mother. He once commented that he was seen as her golden child, living her dream of being a "pop star", and was faced with a certain amount of pressure from her. Therefore, the lyrics for "Mother" were born.

Rolling Stone commented that "he wrote the manic 'Mother' to vent his frustration, utilizing an unnerving 7/8 time signature, and handling the vocals himself." They claimed the lyrics are things to be said to a therapist and not on The Police's final studio album, which produced Grammy-winning hits.

"Mother" ended up being one of the most controversial tracks on the album, which was scrutinized by multiple critics. Summers even admitted he made the song to be "funny" and "ironic."

"It's something that's really off-the-wall. It was very bizarre - I think it freaked the record company out. When the album came out, we had all the press in the world watching us and talking about it. The reviews came in, and that song got written about so much because it was so off-the-wall and so ballsy to do that, because the band was having so much commercial success," he said.

Synchronicity ended up becoming one of The Police's most successful releases and was included in the list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. It's even been preserved at the United States National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

The album was released in June 1983 and produced hits like "Every Breath You Take", "King of Pain", "Wrapped Around Your Finger", and "Synchronicity II". The first two tracks ended up reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts for several weeks, with "Synchronicity II" entering the charts at No. 13.

The Police were at the height of their fame when the album was released and were nominated for five awards, including Album of the Year, at the 1984 Grammys. They ended up taking home three wins

Film Icon Jessica Lange, 76, Is Still a Blonde Beauty 50 Years After ‘King Kong'

Thu, 03/12/2026 - 8:47am

Jessica Lange has one of the most hefty film resumes in Hollywood, and she's looking absolutely incredible at 76.

The legendary actress made her film debut in the 1976 remake of King Kong, and went on to an illustrious career that included roles in Tootsie, Frances, and Crimes of the Heart. Also an accomplished theater actress, Lange has danced in between mediums throughout the years, building a successful television resume as well, starring in Ryan Murphy's popular series American Horror Story. But when the blonde beauty hits a red carpet, it's hard not to stare. With a career that spans half a century, Lange has broken boundaries and earned endless awards for her work, all while looking absolutely stunning. The legend hit the opening night of Antigone (This Play I Read In High School) at the Public Theater in New York City, and reminded us why we're such fans. What a beauty!

How Does Jessica Lange Feel About Aging in Hollywood?

While the legendary actress is thriving in her seventies, she doesn't hesitate to call out Tinseltown's ridiculous standards when it comes to the “idea of what happens to an actress in Hollywood at a certain age.”

“Maybe it was more extreme back then in the ’40s and ’50s and ’60s,” she told PEOPLE last year of sexism and ageism in the industry, "but it certainly hasn't changed that much.”

How Does Lange Feel About Pivoting to Television?

After nailing her role in Grey Gardens in 2009, Lange found a home on television. She became a frequent face in the Ryan Murphy universe, starring in American Horror Story and Feud. But it wasn't that long ago that stars with prominent film resumes wouldn't touch television with a 10-foot pole. In a revealing interview with the Los Angeles Times last year, Lange opened up about how that has changed significantly.

“There was a time when if you were a TV actor, you were a TV actor,” she explained. “And if you were a film actor, you were a film actor. But now everybody’s doing everything, and thank God. I remember when I was working on stage in London and actors would be on stage at night and doing a radio play or filming in the day. There wasn’t that kind of pigeonholing that there was in the States.”

While Lange has proven she can do anything, let's take a look back at her first major role:

Kurt Russell Remembers Sharing the Screen With Elvis Presley, Stepping Into His Shoes

Thu, 03/12/2026 - 8:43am

With a career spanning six decades, Kurt Russell still remembers his first film role: acting alongside Elvis Presley, a moment etched in his memory.

In an interview with Seth Meyers on his late-night talk show, Russell recounted his early career highlight with the King of Rock and Roll and how he eventually stepped into Presley’s shoes for a titular 1979 movie role.

Meyers surprised the actor with a still from the film It Happened at the World's Fair, capturing a scene between him and Presley. The 1963 film was Russell's first acting role.

"He [Elvis] wanted an excuse to meet this nurse," Russell said of the plotline. "So he needs to find a way to go in there with something."

"So he pays this kid [Russell] 50 cents to kick him in the shins. He had a pad on him, and I'm looking at him like 'I can't miss that,' and I did it about ten times. Elvis was like, 'I think we got it.'"

He continued, "He was 27 years old here, and I played him when I was 27. And you know what I'm realizing now? He's my dad when he was young." Russell's dad, Bing Russell, appeared in numerous western-themed films and in the television series Bonanza.

Russell then recounted a story that further linked his family to the King of Rock and Roll. "This is how cool Elvis was," he began.

"We are back in Los Angeles shooting, and my dad comes to the set with me. I see Elvis really looking over. He asked me, "Is that your dad? Can I meet him?"

Presley told Russell's dad, "Mr. Russell, I really love the way you wear your hat in all the cowboy movies you do. If I ever do a cowboy movie, would it be okay if I wore my hat your way?" He concluded, "If you watch Charro, you'll see Elvis wore his hat that way."

Kurt Russell played Elvis Presley in an acclaimed TV movie biopic direc by John Carpenter. Presley's singing voice was provided by country star Ronnie McDowell.

The actor was nominated for a 1979 Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor for the role. He would go on to provide the voice of the king in the 1994 feature film Forrest Gump.

Inside Jen Affleck’s Messy Marriage on ‘The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives’—And Where She and Zac Are Now

Thu, 03/12/2026 - 8:30am

When Jen and Zac Affleck exchanged vows six years ago, they couldn’t have predicted that they’d one day come to blows on a reality show called The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives—least of all over a girls’ trip to Chippendales. But despite being a picture-perfect Mormon couple, their relationship turned out to have serious cracks. Zac’s controlling behavior, which Jen and the other members of MomTok described as “typical” for traditional Mormon men, was one of Season 1’s most dramatic storylines.

“It’s not easy being vulnerable as a Mormon and showing what actually happens sometimes in Mormon relationships,” Jen said on an episode of The Viall Files in May 2025. The second season of the series focused on the couple’s attempt to improve their dynamic, with Jen demanding an equal partnership and Zac vowing to deliver.

“Hopefully people within the Mormon culture can look at our relationship and reflect on theirs and say like, ‘Hey, I think we kind of struggle with that too,” Jen said. “Or maybe my husband has fed into the patriarchy and isn’t treating me right.’ I want to be an example of that.”

Alas, the couple’s storyline abruptly ended after Jen found out she was pregnant with their third child and left the show to protect her mental health. But after her stint on Dancing With the Stars (during which Zac was her biggest cheerleader), they were back for Season 3 of SLOMW, ultimately going to therapy to work on their relationship and stay together to raise their three children.

We have yet to see what Season 4 will bring and if Zac will ever make it back to medical school.

Are Jen and Zac from The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives still together?

Yes. Although they separated between Seasons 1 and 2 of Mormon Wives, they ultimately reconciled. “I basically told him when I was in a place where I [wanted] to walk away from the relationship,” she recalled on The Viall Files. “...I was not opposed to divorce. I was truly doing what I felt was right.” Zac promised to evolve for the sake of their marriage, and so far, Jen seems pleased with his progress.

“...I feel like our relationship has never been stronger because I have found my voice and I’m still in the process of that,” she said.

How did Jen and Zac from The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives meet?

The couple met on the Mormon dating app Mutual shortly after Zac returned from a mission in the Dominican Republic for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. About a year after their first date, they tied the knot.

“I knew Zac was the one when I realized I couldn't imagine life without him & his amazing qualities,” Jen shared on Instagram two months ahead of their wedding. “Zac goes 1000% at everything he does & is successful at everything he puts his mind too [sic]. He’s always pushing me to be better, bigger, stronger in every single way.”

The couple said “I do” in Newport Beach, Calif., on June 28, 2019.

Is Jen or Zac Affleck on Secret Lives of Mormon Wives related to Ben Affleck?

No. The biggest scandal to ever rock MomTok may have been Taylor Frankie Paul’s swinger reveal, but the most bizarre one was that Jen lied—or spread someone else’s lie—about her husband being related to Ben Affleck. In the first season of the show, she claimed the Good Will Hunting star was Zac’s second cousin. (She even told People that Zac’s dad met Ben when he was “very little,” adding that she was “hoping to meet him one day, too.”) But after the show aired, multiple sources came forward to refute the familial connection, and in the second season of the show, Jen and Zac acknowledge the awkward controversy.

"You're not gonna make me feel stupid [for saying you’re related to Ben] when that's all I've been told from your family," Jen tells Zac. But he insists she just fell for a literal dad joke. “No one's ever taken it seriously until you ran with it," he said. They wound up dressing as Ben and J.Lo for Halloween

Is Jen Affleck’s husband Zac in medical school?

No. A big point of contention in Mormon Wives Season 1 was whether Zac would attend medical school in New York City and how a move across the country would impact Jen’s participation in MomTok, which he dismissed as a trivial concern despite her being the breadwinner of the family. Between Seasons 1 and 2 of the show, the Afflecks moved to Arizona—not New York—for Zac to attend medical school, but Jen returned to Utah amid marital strife and he dropped out almost immediately to follow her back and work on their marriage. It’s unclear if Zac still plans to pursue a career in medicine.

Is Jen Affleck still the breadwinner in her marriage to Zac?

Given Jen’s continued success as an influencer and TV personality, including her recent run on DWTS, it seems obvious that she’s still the big earner in her relationship.

Zac acknowledged as much in a May 2025 interview on The Viall Files, too. “It still sometimes makes me insecure,” he said. “Sometimes I’m at home on a random Tuesday as a stay-at-home dad or I’m at the trampoline park with my two kids and I’m like, ‘What the hell am I doing with my life?' I’m grateful that that’s even a possibility. I still think I want to figure out what I want to do. But back [in the Season 1 era], it was really hard because this dynamic had switched.”

Still, Zac seems capable of poking fun at himself, too (which isn't to say childcare isn't legit labor). In an Instagram with MomTok-er Whitney Leavitt’s husband, Conner, the pair lip sync to the scene in Step Brotherswhere Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly’s characters list their weaknesses to a potential employer. (“I am no good before 11 a.m. I also get headaches from computers, so I can't be around them too long,” etc.) Zac overlaid the video with the text, “Pov: Us if we ever have to go back to work.”

View this post on Instagram How many children does Jen Affleck have with Zac?

The couple shares three children: Nora, Lucas (“Luca”) and Penelope (“Penny”). Jen learned of her third pregnancy in the second season of Mormon Wives, and it wasn’t exactly a happy moment. "I'm just scared because I'm not the person I want to be before bringing in another child,” she said in a tearful confessional. "I'm sad for this child because I don't even know where my marriage is at. And so, I think, in this moment, I've kind of come to my breaking point." She wound up leaving the show to tend to her mental health.

“There’s so much more to our story than many realize,” she shared on Instagram in March. “This journey is ongoing, and there’s still so much to learn. We can only take it one step at a time…”

Fans will presumably learn more about the couple's current status when Mormon Wives returns for Season 4 on March 12, 2026.

Christina Perri Crashes ‘Shrinking’ Set for Emotional ‘A Thousand Years’ Piano Sing-Along

Thu, 03/12/2026 - 8:18am

Singer-songwriter Christina Perri dropped by the set of Shrinking after her song “A Thousand Years”—the poignant, heart-wrenching ballad made famous in the Twilight films—played a major role in the show’s latest episode, which sees Jimmy (Jason Segel) and Alice (Lukita Maxwell) marking Tia’s (Lilan Bowden) birthday with a flashback to one of her favorite songs.

In the memory, Jimmy and Tia celebrate the occasion by singing karaoke together at the piano, but instead of the lyric “I will be brave,” she jokingly sings “I will be grape,” giving rise to the birthday tradition they call Grape Day.

The emotional episode, titled “I Will Be Grape,” ends with the entire Shrinking cast gathered around the piano to sing the haunting tune—so it’s no surprise Perri couldn’t resist stopping by behind the scenes to perform her own rendition with the cast.

Christa Miller, who plays Liz, shared the behind-the-scenes moment when Perri dropped by for the sing-along on Instagram, posting, "I love when my dear friend @christinaperri drops by set 🤗 She came to play and have fun with us nerds and we so did! Here’s our little #bts jam session."

With Segel at the piano and Perri by his side, Perri led the cast in their own version of the song. "Best day of my life !!!" Perri replied to Miller's video.

Perri also shared a behind-the-scenes Instagram video of herself practicing the song with the cast—and there were plenty of laughs along the way. "What an honor to join the cast of my favorite show to sing this song that means so much to me!! thank you to @jasonsegel and everyone for bringing my song to life again in a new beautiful story!!! feels like a dream. you guys are the grapest," she wrote along with a video.

1987 Smash Classic Hit No. 1 38 Years Ago Today

Thu, 03/12/2026 - 8:18am

In 1987, British pop singer Rick Astley released a song that would quickly become a huge success, only to find new life decades later as a viral meme.

Astley's song "Never Gonna Give You Up" was originally released on July 27, 1987, and it was the first single from his debut album Whenever You Need Somebody. It helped the young singer make a huge entrance into the music scene, and on March 12, 1988, it officially hit the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 music chart.

The song ranked just above George Michael's "Father Figure" and the song "She's Like the Wind" by Patrick Swayze featuring Wendy Fraser. "Never Gonna Give You Up" soared to the top much quicker in Astley's home country, the United Kingdom, topping the Official Singles Chart in August 1987 and holding the position for five weeks.

Related: 50 Years Ago Today, This Cult ’70s TV Show’s Theme Song Became a No. 1 Hit

While Astley's song continued to be a hit over the years, it got a unique second life in the late 2000s when a trend called "rickrolling" started online. The joke was a bait and switch, with users thinking they were going to another site or video, only to have Astley's music video pop up and start playing.

Astley commented on the phenomenon in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, saying, “I think it’s just one of those odd things where something gets picked up and people run with it. But that’s what's brilliant about the Internet.” Since then, the meme certainly hasn't been forgotten, popping up here and there over the years.

In 2019, Astley released a reimagined version of the song with a new pianoforte arrangement. It came out as a track on his greatest hits album called The Best of Me, which was released on Oct. 25, 2019. Other songs included in the album are "Whenever You Need Somebody," "Take Me to Your Heart," and "Angels on My Side," among others.

The Best Way to Slice a Bagel, According to Ina Garten

Thu, 03/12/2026 - 8:15am

Surprisingly, there is a significant amount of controversy surrounding the "correct" way to slice a bagel. There’s the simple two-step method, in which you lay the bagel flat and slice it parallel to the cutting surface using a serrated knife, or you put it on the side and cut all the way down.

There’s also the scoop method, where after slicing the bagel in half, you use your fingers to pull out some of the interior of the bagel, either for fewer carbs or more room for toppings.

And now Ina Garten, of all people, has weighed in with a third bagel-slicing option, which has a lot of people talking online. Here's what you need to know about how the Barefoot Contessa likes to make her bagels

The Food Network recently shared an old clip from an episode of The Barefoot Contessa, in which Garten is making a couple of bagel sandwiches. The caption reads: “Can you believe how Ina cuts her bagels?!” And you know what? We kinda can't!

Garten begins the video explaining to viewers that she prefers to cut her bagels into thirds, and then proceeds to make two horizontal cuts through a bagel, creating 3 equally sized bagel rounds. Okay...

Why Ina Garten Slices Her Bagels in Thirds

“Instead of having a big thick bagel, I like to cut it in thirds,” Ina explains. “So instead you have a nice little sandwich,” she says before concluding, “I think it tastes better.”

At a glance, it seems as though Garten is preparing some sort of triple-decker bagel sandwich, which commenters immediately hopped on, of course.

“Big Mac bagel,” replied one quick-witted viewer. Another chimed in to explicitly express their disdain for Garten's method, wishing anyone “straight to jail with that third piece.”

But after watching the video a few times and sitting with a bit, we see what Ina's up to. By making two slices in each bagel she turns two bagels into three thin sandwiches, which gives you a more equal filling-to-bagel ratio and also helps you stretch your grocery budget.

Is it unconventional? Sure, but we're willing to give it a try the next time we make a bagel sandwich because Ina's never steered us wrong before.

Six Flags Just Signed Travis Kelce as Its Newest Brand Ambassador

Thu, 03/12/2026 - 8:04am

Six Flags is trading the gridiron for the midway. On March 12, the amusement park giant announced a major strategic partnership with NFL legend and three-time Super Bowl championTravis Kelce, who will now serve as the official brand ambassador for the company's portfolio of 41 parks across North America.

The multi-year deal brings one of the most recognizable faces in sports—and pop culture—into the fold as Six Flags continues its massive reinvestment in world-class thrills. Throughout 2026, Kelce will be the face of digital content and social media campaigns, while the company gains the rights to utilize his name, image and likeness for everything from streaming platforms to in-park marketing.

For Kelce, the partnership is a homecoming of sorts. “Six Flags parks were a hallmark of my childhood and the scene of some of my most fun and cherished memories, and I’m excited to team up with the company as it enters its next chapter," Kelce said. "The Six Flags team is creating even more rides and attractions as it takes guest engagement to a new level."

The move highlights the company’s aggressive growth strategy following its landmark merger with Cedar Fair. By aligning with a "natural ambassador" who grew up visiting iconic parks like Cedar Point or Six Flags Over Texas, the brand is looking to bridge the gap between classic nostalgia and the next generation of thrill-seekers.

“His fun-loving personality, commitment to excellence and passion for the game have contributed to three Super Bowl titles on the field, and we’re confident they will score big with our guests as well,” said John Reilly, president and chief executive officer of Six Flags.

The partnership comes as Six Flags moves to balance its books and sharpen its operational focus. Earlier this month, the company announced the sale of seven regional parks to EPR Properties for $331 million, including Worlds of Fun in Kansas City and Six Flags St. Louis. While the divestiture helps the company pay down debt and concentrate resources on its highest-growth properties, fans in Missouri won't see immediate changes—Six Flags confirmed that all 2026 season passes will be honored and the branding will remain in place through the end of the current season.

While financial terms were not disclosed, the "Kelce Effect" is expected to be felt across the parks immediately as the 2026 season kicks off. As Six Flags continues to invest in "world-class thrill rides, attractions and other family-friendly entertainment," having one of the NFL’s most influential personalities on the team provides a massive marketing boost for their unrivaled portfolio of parks.

Remember This Hit '80s Show? It Was a Ratings Smash Before Getting Canceled

Thu, 03/12/2026 - 8:00am

For many TV fans in the 1980s, Family Ties was must-watch television. So it makes sense that many fans were surprised that the beloved series came to an end.

The NBCsitcom became a ratings powerhouse during its run, turning its young star Michael J. Fox into a household name and became the decade's most defining family comedies.

Despite strong viewership and a loyal fan base, Family Ties wrapped up on May 14, 1989, after seven seasons. The show starred Fox, now 64, alongside Michael Gross, Meredith Baxter, Tina Yothers, Justine Bateman, and Brian Bonsall as the Keaton family, whose generational clashes—especially between liberal parents Elyse and Steven and their ambitious conservative son Alex P. Keaton—was responsible for much of the show’s humor.

At its peak, the series was a major hit for NBC. After initially struggling in the ratings, Family Ties found its groove once it aired alongside powerhouse sitcoms like The Cosby Show and Cheers. By the mid-1980s, it had become one of the most popular shows on television and regularly ranked among the top contenders in Nielsen ratings.

So why did such a successful series come to an end? Unlike many shows that fade away due to declining ratings, Family Ties concluded while still performing well. Creators ultimately decided it was better to end the story on their own terms rather than risk the series losing quality over time. “At the end of the sixth season, the producers came to us and said, ‘We’re only doing one more season.,” Gross recalled to Closer Weekly in 2023, explaining the whole cast asked why they were choosing to end the sitcom. He remember producer explaining that the story had run its course and they were “running out of stories.”

The finale episode, titled “Alex Doesn’t Live Here Anymore,” centered on Fox’s character accepting a job in New York City and saying goodbye to his family and friends. The emotional sendoff provided a satisfying conclusion for longtime viewers who had followed the Keaton family for nearly a decade.

Another factor in the show’s ending was Fox’s rapidly growing movie career. While still starring on Family Ties, he appeared in films like Back to the Future and Teen Wolf, both of which helped launch him into major Hollywood stardom.

Around the same time the series was ending, had married actress Tracy Pollan, whom he met on set, just a year before the show concluded, and the couple welcomed their first child only weeks after the finale aired.

Man Visited 155 Pubs in Ireland on a Quest for the Perfect Guinness and Pub—He Finally Found Both

Thu, 03/12/2026 - 7:58am

For many travelers, visiting Ireland means experiencing its legendary pub culture. But one Irish pub enthusiast took that idea much further, traveling the globe in search of the perfect pint of Guinness.

Irish pub expert Colm Dalton has spent years visiting Irish pubs around the world, eventually rating 155 pubs across 51 countries. What began as a joke slowly turned into a full-scale passion project documented on his website.

After years abroad in cities from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, Dalton says one thing became clear: while Irish pubs exist worldwide, the best of them are still found in Dublin.

And when it comes to the perfect Guinness, the BBC reported he believes one pub stands above the rest.

View this post on Instagram The Best Pub in Dublin

According to Dalton, the best overall pub experience in Dublin is Kehoes Heritage Pub.

Located just off Grafton Street in central Dublin, the pub dates back to the 19th century and has remained in the same family for more than a century. Dalton says it represents everything that makes an Irish pub special.

“It’s got beautiful Guinness, it’s very central, and it has incredible heritage,” Dalton explained to BBC.

The interior features polished mahogany wood, classic Victorian décor, and a historic feature known as a “snug”—a small enclosed booth originally designed so women, politicians, or clergy could enjoy a discreet drink.

For Dalton, the combination of history, atmosphere, and perfectly poured pints makes Kehoes the city’s best pub, but it doesn't make it the best pint of Guinness .

Where to Find the Best Guinness

While Kehoes ranks as Dalton’s overall favorite pub, he says the best Guinness in Dublin is served at John Kavanagh The Gravediggers.

Located beside Glasnevin Cemetery, the pub earned its nickname from the cemetery workers who once drank there after work.

Unlike tourist-packed bars in the city center, The Gravediggers is intentionally simple. There’s no music and no television, creating a space where the focus remains squarely on the pint.

Dalton says a perfect Guinness should have a few key characteristics:

  • A smooth dome-shaped foam head
  • No visible bubbles
  • “Lacing” that sticks to the glass after each sip
  • A balanced flavor that isn’t too bitter or warm

The reason Guinness tastes so good there may actually be simple science. Because the pub sells so much stout, the kegs are constantly moving, keeping the beer exceptionally fresh.

The Art of Pouring the Perfect Pint

Pouring Guinness properly is almost a ceremony in Ireland. The process takes about 119 seconds and involves a two-step pour.

First, the bartender fills the glass about three-quarters full and lets the nitrogen bubbles settle. The liquid gradually shifts from brown to deep ruby black as the foam forms.

Once settled, the pint is topped off until the creamy head forms a slight dome over the rim.

Locals even have a rule for spotting tourists: never grab the pint before it finishes settling.

View this post on Instagram Other Legendary Dublin Pubs

Dalton’s list of top Dublin pubs also includes a few other notable spots.

One is Grogan's Castle Lounge, a cozy pub near Grafton Street that has long been a gathering place for artists and writers. The walls are covered in rotating artwork from local painters, giving it a feel somewhere between a pub and a gallery.

Another favorite is John Fallon's The Capstan Bar, located in the Liberties district. Dating back to 1619, it’s one of Dublin’s oldest pubs and still features wood-paneled interiors and traditional design.

In Dublin pubs, Guinness isn’t just a drink. It’s a ritual tied to history, storytelling, and conversation.

You can find Irish pubs around the world but the perfect pint still tastes best where it all began.

Beloved ‘60s Sitcom’s Big Screen Movie Has Been Stalled for 40 Years—Here’s Why

Thu, 03/12/2026 - 7:36am

A Gilligan’s Island feature film has been in the works for years, but it may never be made. In a new interview with Woman’s World, TV producer Lloyd Schwartz said he’s been working to make a movie based on his late father’s 1960s sitcom since the late 1980s.

“We’ve been trying to do the movie while fighting all kinds of studios and all kinds of stuff since 1987,” Schwartz, 79, said in the interview published in March 2026. “Different ideas get pitched, but nothing has had any traction. At the moment, I think we’re mired in who’s going to run Warner Brothers after the Paramount acquisition of the company... that’s where Gilligan‘s current ownership rests.”

Created by Sherwood Schwartz, Gilligan’s Island starred Bob Denver, Alan Hale Jr., Tina Louise, Jim Backus, Natalie Schafer, Russell Johnson, and Dawn Wells. The sitcom about seven castaways stranded on a desert island aired for three seasons on CBS, from 1964 to 1967.

In the late 1970s, the passengers of the ill-fated ship the S.S. Minnow returned for a trio of TV moviesRescue from Gilligan's Island, The Castaways of Gilligan's Island, and The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island—but a big-screen homage in the likes of The Brady Bunch Movie is still in limbo.

RELATED: ‘Brady Bunch’ Star Reveals the No. 1 Question He Still Gets From Fans

One of Lloyd Schwartz’s movie ideas was a prequel to the sitcom.

“My sister and I wrote a movie that was an origin story,” he shared. “You see where all the people come from and why these seven people are on an island. It’s very funny. Mary Ann is there because she won it on a game show. … Ginger was making some movie in Hawaii, and that’s why she was there. And you see the Howells in this huge mansion with designers and chefs—it was very big and very funny.”

“Warner Brothers at that point said, ‘No, no, we have other writers,’” Schwartz recalled of his script. “We’ve had three or four scripts written over the years. …We’ve agreed to other writers—and then those scripts went away. ”

In a 2023 interview with Retrocrush, series creator Sherwood Schwartz said it was “fun” to satirize his show The Brady Bunch with two big-screen movies. Of finding the right actors to reprise roles first created by others in the '60s, he said, “There’s an amazing amount of talent in this city.  You put them in the right attire. You can just take a skinny guy and put him in that red shirt and a heavy guy in the blue shirt, they’ll say, 'Hey there’s Gilligan and Skipper!'”

In 2013, The Hollywood Reporter announced a Gilligan’s Island movie was in the works at Warner Bros., with Josh Gad penning the script with Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. Lloyd Schwartz was listed as an executive producer on the project, which never came to fruition.

Schwartz admitted to butting heads with some studio executives in a 2025 interview with Woman’s World. “You’ll see headlines about a Gilligan’s Island movie being in development, but nothing ever comes of it,” he said. "The biggest problem? When we meet with studios, they act like they know better than us."

"Instead of trusting the people who actually created and understand the show, they dictate how it should be done. And, inevitably, they fail," he added. "Over the years, so many people have come and gone, executives have made promises, key figures have passed away—it’s a long, sad, and often ridiculous story."

How Much the ‘Secret Lives of Mormon Wives’ Stars Make and Who Has the Highest Net Worth

Thu, 03/12/2026 - 7:30am

There’s a lot of talk on The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives about how "MomTok" isn’t just a business, it’s a sisterhood. It’s a nice idea in theory, but Season 3 made us wonder how true it is.

According to Mikayla Matthews, Demi Engemann left the show because she asked to be paid “three times” more than the rest of her castmates and was denied. And WhitneyLeavitt walked because she couldn’t negotiate a scripted role into her contract. Both women came back halfway through the season, but it seemed their return had less to do with mending fences than it did protecting their reputations and business prospects. Whitney openly admitted to rejoining the show only for a chance to audition for Dancing with the Stars (which she landed).

Another interesting tidbit came in February 2026, when Deadline reported that the stars of the show were made executive producers for Season 4. That included Jen Affleck, Jessi Draper, Taylor Frankie Paul, Miranda Hope, Whitney Leavitt, Matthews, Mayci Neeley and Layla Taylor. Engemann, who's billed as a friend rather than as a core cast member for Season 4, was notably missing from that EP list.

With so much deal-related drama going down in Utah—and Season 4 dropping on March 12, 2026—one has to wonder: How much does the cast get paid for The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives? And while we’re on the subject of money, who is the richest influencer in MomTok?

Related: Inside Jen Affleck’s Messy Marriage and Where She and Zac Are Now

How much does The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives cast get paid per episode?

Without intel from MomTok, a Disney/Hulu exec or another reliable source, we can’t say for sure what the cast makes per episode. But we do know that reality TV salaries vary enormously from show to show and person to person, and that some stars don’t even get paid per episode—they earn a flat fee per season instead. A contestant who doesn’t go very far on Love Is Blindmight make $1,000 per week (as one former suitor claimed in a lawsuit against the show), for instance, while the lead of The Bachelormight get closer to six figures for the entire season (Bachelorette star Jason Tartickonce said he passed on an offer for $100,000).

Meanwhile, on a franchise like The Real Housewives, which Secret Lives hews closer to in format and style, New York alum Bethany Frankel has said that salaries range from $25,000 for the first season to seven figures (“and for some people, more”) for later seasons, although Bravo hasn’t verified those numbers.

An unsubstantiated report from The Sun in April 2025 claimed that the cast of The Valley got a pay bump between Seasons 1 and 2 that gave new, full-time cast members $5,000 to 10,000 per episode, depending on how much they filmed, and Vanderpump Rulesalums around $30,000 per episode (for Jax Taylor) and in the ballpark of $20,000 or $25,000 per episode (for Brittany Cartwright and Kristen Doute).

Alas, none of this info gets us any closer to knowing what, exactly, the Secret Lives cast makes per episode. Given the lay of the land, it wouldn’t be surprising if they got $5,000 per episode for Season 1 or $25,000 flat for all eight episodes—it’s anyone’s guess.

What we know for sure is that the cast renegotiated their contracts between the first three seasons of the series, so it stands to reason they got pay bumps that reflect the popularity of the show. And they were reportedly paid equally for the first two seasons of the show (Whitney confirmed as much to Business Insider), but it sounds like that wasn’t the case for Season 3 (she also suggested that their arrangement could change “down the line”).

Certain stars had been clamoring to assert their personal worth for a while: In Season 2, Episode 6, the cast revealed that during talks for the second season, Demi suggested Jessi be kicked off the show to boost everyone else’s payday. She defended herself by saying that Jessi “went around” her first, despite them having a “mutual understanding that we were gonna come in fighting for everything as a united front.” Either way, the writing was on the wall that the cast’s “equal pay” days were numbered.

The core cast members were made executive producers for Season 4. It's unclear what those EP credits might mean for paydays, but the women are certainly getting more involved as the series goes on.

What do The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives stars make from brand deals?

Many reality TV stars make a big chunk of their money through sponsorships, and that’s certainly the case for the MomTokers. But how much they make from brands varies from deal to deal.

“Each year is different,” Whitney told E! News in 2024. “You could get a really big brand deal like, ‘Hey, we want to have like a six-month contract with you,’ and then next year you don’t get it at all. It varies drastically.” As viewers may remember, she once got $20,000 to promote a sex toy on Instagram. Meanwhile, Mayci has said that she once got $75,000 for a one-year deal with an unnamed brand.

How much is Taylor Frankie Paul from Mormon Wives worth?

Taylor Frankie Paul has a net worth of $400,000, according to Celebrity Net Worth. It’s likely that number will see a spike after she debuts as the next Bachelorette in 2026, at which point her earning potential—through brand endorsements, appearances, etc.—will skyrocket.

What is Taylor Frankie Paul getting paid for The Bachelorette

ABC hasn’t disclosed salary details. But Amy Kaufman reported in her book Bachelor Nation that it’s "incredibly rare for someone to make less than six figures."

How much did Whitney Leavitt make from Dancing with the Stars

Per Variety, the starting salary on DWTSis $125,000, which includes training for at least 20 hours per week for several weeks prior to the start of the season. From there, competitors get weekly bonuses in the following amounts:

  • Weeks 3 and 4: $10,000 per week
  • Week 5: $15,000
  • Weeks 6 and 7: $20,000 per week
  • Weeks 8 and 9: $30,000.
  • Semi-finals and finale: $50,000 per week

Because Whitney made it to the semi-finals (where she was eliminated), you would think she made a minimum of $310,000. But a 2019 report claimed that the pay was cut so that the maximum the final three could earn was $295,000.

How much did Jen Affleck make from Dancing with the Stars?

Jen made it to Week 7 before getting eliminated, which means she pocketed $200,000 in her time on the show.

Related: Who Is Mikayla Matthews’ Husband? All About Jace Terry

What was Mayci Neeley paid for her memoir?

Mayci’s memoir, Told You So, came out in October 2025 and was an instant New York Times bestseller, but the details of her deal remain undisclosed.

Who is the richest one on The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives?

There’s not enough reliable net worth data out there to say for sure who is the richest. Whitney and Taylor are obvious contenders for the top spot given their high-profile ABC gigs (DWTS and The Bachelorette, respectively) and the lucrative offshoot deals that are bound to come from them. But our hunch is that Jessi has the deepest pockets of the bunch, at least for now. During the Season 2 pay conflict, Demi said that Jessi didn’t “need” the money because she had a “hair empire.” And her Salt Lake City mansion, which featured heavily in Season 3, went on the market for $2.5 million. You’d need to sell a lot of vibrators on TikTok to come up with that kind of cash!

Nancy Guthrie Update: Sheriff Department’s Latest Comments on Timeline Raise New Questions

Thu, 03/12/2026 - 7:20am

New comments from the sheriff about the timeline in the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie are drawing attention online. As the investigation continues, the remarks are prompting fresh discussion about the sequence of events surrounding the night the 84-year-old vanished and what investigators believe may have unfolded in the hours before her disappearance was reported.

On Wednesday, March 11, journalist John DePetro, host of The John DePetro Show, asked the Pima County Sheriff's Department about the timeline that was originally released back on Feb. 5. DePetro, who has been in Tucson covering the case for weeks, asked if there had been any updates to that timeline.

"The timeline released on February 5th remains the only releasable timeline. We have not released dates/times for the doorbell video - the investigation is ongoing," was the response from PCSD. After he shared this reply on X, it made some people believe that there's more to the timeline that isn't being released—specifically about the timestamps on the videos released of the perp on Guthrie's front stoop.

"So then they do know the dates and time on the videos..." one person wrote.

"Ongoing to nowhere. I hope he proves me wrong," another comment read.

Guthrie has been missing since Sunday, Feb. 1. Despite receiving thousands of tips from the public, neither the Pima County Sheriff's Department nor the FBI have been able to locate Guthrie—or find out the person or persons responsible for Guthrie's disappearance.

The Absolute Best Way to Prep Asparagus, According to Legendary Chef Jacques Pépin

Thu, 03/12/2026 - 7:15am

Nothing signals spring quite like asparagus. The tender flavor and bright green color are a welcome change-up from all the hearty root veggies of wintertime. And Jacques Pépin, a true legend in the cooking world, knows a bit about perfecting this springtime veg.

In our search for great spring vegetable dishes to serve for Easter, we ran across a video of Pépin making a simple asparagus dish with a butter sauce. The recipe looked incredible, but the way he prepped his asparagus also caught our eye. We wanted to test out the tip and see if the online chatter was warranted, but also had a few questions for the man himself. We reached out to Pépin to discuss all things asparagus (including this cool tip). Here's what you need to know.

How can people pick the best asparagus at the market and what's the best way to store it until you're ready to cook it?

"For the best asparagus, I try to get the thickest possible asparagus, very firm, especially with a tight head like the bud of a flower, rather than open, which would indicate that it is older. Take a wet paper towel and wrap it around the bottom part of the asparagus so that it stays wet, then put it in a plastic bag in the refrigerator."

What's the best way to prep and cut asparagus?

"To prepare the asparagus, I peel about a third of the lower part of the asparagus with a vegetable peeler. The end is trimmed so that you can eat it at that point; the trimmed lower part of the asparagus is just as tender as the top part of it. You can do it with a vegetable peeler, which is easier, or you can do it with a knife, but it is a bit harder to do with a knife. "

What's the difference between white, green and purple asparagus?

"I don't see much difference between the green asparagus and purple, but the white asparagus is usually tougher, there is more trimming to be done, they do cook longer and the taste is quite different (also FYI, you can eat asparagus raw, such as in a shaved asparagus salad)."

What I thought of Jacques Pépin's asparagus tip

I was always taught that snapping my asparagus at the bottom was the way to go, but as I've learned, that's not necessary anymore. I love asparagus and would rather eat more of it than throw it away (also, food waste), so I was excited to try out Jacques' tip.

My biggest takeaway from this tip is to make sure you're choosing larger asparagus spears (the peak time is April/May) since it'll make this tip much easier to master. Also, make sure that the veggie peeler you're using is super sharp. I was able to peel a few spears at a time by rolling a bunch on my cutting board a quarter turn at a time, which was a great time-saver and better (in my opinion) than doing it one spear at a time.
