5 Books Releasing as Movies in 2026 That You Need To Read First

Mon, 03/23/2026 - 2:58pm

We’re in a world today where a lot of TV shows and movies are based on books. Some of them are remakes that we’ve seen time and time again, while others are books that we’ve patiently waited to see on the big screen. However, before you see the adaptations, it’s best to read the source material first.

It’s very rare, but there are some books I’ve read that would make better movies than books. Most of the time, the book is far better, purely because it has more time to set the stage and develop the characters. That’s sure to be the case with these five books you need to read before you watch them in theaters.

‘Project Hail Mary’ by Andy Weir

If you haven’t already gone to theaters to watch Project Hail Mary, take some time to read the book first. Andy Weir is more than a sci-fi master. He has a way of making the actual science in the books more entertaining and intriguing. You find yourself wanting to know more — and those who have read The Martian will definitely agree!

Once again, Project Hail Mary sees a male protagonist in an impossible situation, and yet, he figures it out. Weir writes in a way that anyone can feel like they’re the protagonist in this story, creating a sense of reality within this world of fiction. There is more detail to the wacky experiments that are needed, as Ryland Grace figures out a way back home, and quite frankly, it has more intensity through the narration.

Don’t get me wrong; the movie has done an excellent job. The book just develops more and explains a little more to understand the thought processes.

Penguin Random House

‘Animal Farm’ by George Orwell

Did you know Animal Farm is getting an animated movie adaptation? It arrives in theaters in May, and it’s sure to be something to take the children to. After all, while it is on the darker side of fiction, there’s an important message about society, friendship, and leadership all mixed in.

The novel itself is a satire, with George Orwell looking at the rise of Stalinism. While “all animals are equal,” it’s soon clear that that’s not exactly the case. Movies often don’t have the time to delve into the realities of the political systems and the authoritarian regime, but the book does, and Orwell is a master at detail without becoming a bore.

This is despite the book being a quick read. It keeps the focus on the topics that really matter, and you’ll go into the world looking at all elements of life in a different way.

HarperCollins

‘Remarkably Bright Creatures’ by Shelby Van Pelt

For those who need a story about unlikely bonds, Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt is something that will stand out. The movie will come to Netflix on May 8, 2026, but you’ll want to read the book first. The good news is that you have time.

This is a story of a widow who cleans the aquarium tank and forms a friendship with Marcellus, a giant octopus in the tank. It’s easy to believe that your life is coming to an end and there’s nothing else to learn as you get older, but Tova finds out that’s not the case at all. Van Pelt does an amazing job of bringing the thoughts and actions to the page, while also bringing a message of hope within the grief.

It’s hard to tell what type of justice the movie will bring to this story. However, Van Pelt has a poetic way with words that cannot be fully transformed. You’re pulled into the story, and it’s one to read at different stages of life.

Penguin Random House

‘People We Meet on Vacation’ by Emily Henry

When it comes to rom-com authors, there is one who stands out right now. It’s Emily Henry, and yes, her novel People We Meet on Vacation is now available on Netflix. Hopefully, you haven’t watched the movie just yet, because the book is one to read first! After all, it captures the romance in a way that movies only just scratch the surface of.

People We Meet on Vacation has a tenderness to the intimacy within the story. The words on the page flow, drawing you into this budding romance that you root for from the very beginning. The witty dialogue will also keep you engrossed.

One of the best things about the romance is that it has time to breathe. This follows the friends-to-lovers trope, and it’s a trope that is often rushed. It needs to feel satisfying but also believable, and Henry captures that with each page-turn. The movie does it well, but not quite as well as the book due to lack of time.

Scholastic Canada

‘Sunrise on the Reaping’ by Suzanne Collins

The movie is sure to be great. We know the success of The Hunger Games movies and the President Snow prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. However, Sunrise on the Reaping is one you need to read well before November, and you will want to read it again as you get closer. There is a world of information about Haymitch in this story, which explains so much of his personality in The Hunger Games and beyond.

Suzanne Collins has certainly plotted out her stories and her characters. Rather than trying to force Haymitch’s story into what we already know about him — and the world of the Games — Collins is able to fit tidbits in effortlessly. She’s able to expand on other characters we’d only come to know slightly, giving us those “oh, really!” moments.

Then there’s the method of describing the scenes. Collins has a knack of painting the pictures in the minds, and you need to create your own reality before you watch the movie.

'Virgin River' Star Benjamin Hollingsworth Teases Brady’s Fate After Shocking Season 7 Cliffhanger: 'We Don’t Know What Could Happen' (Exclusive)

Mon, 03/23/2026 - 2:48pm

Watching Season 7 of Virgin River is an emotional roller coaster ride – for viewers and the cast alike. That includes Benjamin Hollingsworth, who continues to bring depth to his complicated bad-boy character, Dan Brady, in the popular Netflix series.

Set against the picturesque California coast, the season barrels toward a jaw-dropping cliffhanger: Brady’s motorcycle accident, leaving his fate uncertain as the already-renewed Season 8 looms. And, while Hollingsworth says he can’t reveal whether Brady survives, he is hopeful.

"Brady has been stabbed and survived; he’s been punched numerous times and survived,” he exclusively told Parade. “He’s been burnt in a fire in some sort of tinfoil burrito and survived. I’m rooting for him — but we don’t know what could happen to Brady in Season 8.”

When it comes to Brady and Brie (Zibby Allen), Hollingsworth said he and Allen wanted them to reunite, and he believes their reunion was intentional.

“The writers were smart enough to make sure they made it feel earned,” he said. “It wasn’t just like [their characters] were bouncing from one person to the next and ping ponging around.”

Hollingsworth added that Brady felt that Brie made sure she wanted to reignite her relationship with Brady, and “he at the same time was committed to being there for her in any capacity for as long as he could…until he realized, at some point during the fire, that she’s everything to him, and if she can’t be everything then she has to be nothing.”

When it comes to the much-talked-about steamy scene between Brady and Brie that took place on his motorcycle, Hollingsworth credits Allen for the authenticity.

“The fact that viewers were meant to wait for that [sexy bike] scene to unfold, I think, made it more rewarding,” he said. “I’m really happy it paid off and that people are enjoying it, because we knew how important it was to the story and how important it was to Brie and Brady’s story. But yeah, my back hurt for a few days afterward for sure.”

Related: Benjamin Hollingsworth Reveals the Biggest Life Lessons From ‘Virgin River’ and Hallmark's 'Comfort TV'

Hollingsworth says that he and Allen are close friends who frequently talk and text. They also team up to raise money for Melanoma Canada, a cancer nonprofit. “We conspire on everything, including breaking down every scene and talking about every script.”

“We’re very intentional about our character choices and protecting our storyline," he added. "From the first day when she came in during Season 3, I saw it as an opportunity to really expand who Brady is and an opportunity to show this different side of Brady, and she came in with this wonderful ability, energy, and talent.”

For all of us romantics, Hollingsworth said if he were in charge of writing their next chapter, “I don’t know what’s next for them, but I would love to see them have joy and happiness, and really have a honeymoon phase of being together. I would love to see him integrate more into the town.

He added, “I wouldn’t want him to lose his edge in any way. I think part of the thing that makes Brady unique is that he’s a rebel, and he doesn’t follow anyone’s rules, which I think that naturally gets him into trouble. I think that it’s important that trouble is around him, just hopefully not on top of him.”

Related: Is a ‘Virgin River’ and ‘Sullivan’s Crossing’ Crossover in the Works?

Looking back on several highlights of Season 7, Brady attempted to get back the money that his former girlfriend, Lark, had stolen from him in the prior season. But when he saw Lark’s young daughter, Hazel, he changed his mind about demanding the money.

“I think we are seeing a lot of personal growth from Brady,” Hollingworth said. “Maybe, earlier in the series, he would have made a different decision about the money, but this came from him being selfless and learning lessons the hard way. I also think he has always seen Hazel as a reflection of himself when he was younger."

He continues, “Brady identifies with not really having a solid upbringing, not having a whole lot of money, and bouncing around from place to place. The most rewarding thing for him to do in that moment was to supply not so much for Lark, but Hazel, with that future."

“Use this money and make sure that she has a better upbringing than we had, and that’s a pretty amazing gift,” he said. “It’s something that, if we didn’t see Brady go through all the struggle, that wouldn’t have been as significant.”

Marco Grazzini as Mike and Sara Canning as Victoria in 'Virgin River'

Season 8 will also be missing two major characters. Detective Mike (Marco Grazzini) and Charmaine (Lauren Hammersley), who will not be returning, putting a kibosh on the Brady-Brie-Mike love triangle. Mike seems to have moved on from Brie with Victoria (Sara Canning), a medical investigator working on a case in Virgin River.

Related: ‘Virgin River’ Fan-Favorite Breaks Silence on Unexpected Cast Exits

Hollingsworth said that he and the other cast members were “shocked” to find out that Grazzini was leaving. “Marco is such a terrific actor and such a terrific guy, and so is Lauren, so we’re going to miss them tremendously,” he explained.

“But [showrunner] Patrick Sean Smith mentioned that he would love to have them back at some point, in some capacity, when the storyline made sense for it. So it might not be so long and may not be a farewell to Mike on the show, but we will have to wait and see.”

Another major part of Season 7 is the emotional storyline involving Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack (Martin Henderson) about whether they will adopt Marley’s (Rachel Grance) soon-to-be-born baby boy, especially after her boyfriend, Eamon, came to Virgin River after tracking her down.

Hollingsworth said that Mel and Jack have had their share of heartache. “Breaks seem hard to come by in Virgin River, because I think Brady is in a similar boat, where he doesn’t get a whole lot of breaks,” Hollingsworth said.

“I think that’s kind of the human condition, right? We all struggle with things, and even on the outside when people look perfect, or they seem to have it all, I’ll be the first to admit that life is tricky and hard and complex, he said.

“But in those struggles and in the complexities of life, you find characters whom you become more and more invested in. As much as we want good things for our heroes and our characters on this show, sometimes they have to go through tough stuff in order to come out the other side, and then that makes the wonderful moments that much sweeter.”

Looking back on the seven seasons, Hollingsworth said he enjoyed spending time with his co-stars at Jack’s Bar.

“We don’t drink at Jack’s bar, but we hang out and sip water at the bar, where we have a lot of memories, especially memorable introductions, steamy times, and pool games. I enjoy walking through the sets, because they have a time warp feeling of transporting you to Virgin River.”

When asked why he wants viewers to watch sSason 7 and return for Season 8, Hollingsworth said he does not want the series to end anytime soon.

“I want there to be Seasons 9, 10, 11, and 12, so I want everyone to be loud on their social media, and especially say how they would love to see Brady back. I think season 7 is one of our better seasons, and I think that every year we try to step it up," Hollingsworth said. "And if someone wants a refresher, all of the seasons are there to binge away.”

Virgin River Season 7 is streaming on Netflix. Seasons 1-6 are also available to stream on Netflix. Virgin River has been renewed for Season 8 and will begin production shortly.

"I’ve always been really open to doing that and exploring that, but it just never happened. It would be interesting to see how much Page turned out like her mother," she said. "That would be her worst nightmare, but it’s inevitable. It’d be interesting to see where their relationship is and the effects of being con women for that long period of time. I’m in my 40s, so I’m not going to do [Page’s] wardrobe again right now."

Of working with an A-List cast, Hewitt also said she couldn't believe that she was working with the likes of Weaver and Hackman at the time.

"Every time I looked around, there was this amazing person that I was getting to work with, even if it was only me and their crotch," she said of a notorious scene between her and Liotta.

1971 No. 1 Hit Became an Iconic Breakup Anthem

Mon, 03/23/2026 - 2:29pm

This cover really emphasized that this duo were superstars.

"Superstars" by the Carpenters has become one of the pop-rock group's most popular and iconic songs. Released in 1971, it peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is widely considered one of their best performances, thanks to Karen Carpenter's vocals.

The original "Superstar" was actually written in 1969 by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell, but multiple popular covers and versions were released by other artists, including the Carpenters, Luther Vandross in 1983 and Sonic Youth in 1994.

Despite its success, Bramlett initially disliked the 1971 cover, especially because she didn't like that they changed the original lyrics from "sleep with you again" to "be with you again." But, as the years went on, she began to not care.

"I used to care. Back in the day, I really cared. Man, when they changed it to 'to be with you again.' I wrote 'to sleep with you again.' That meant something. That meant a big deal to me. I was really bummed out," Bramlett, the 81-year-old songwriter, expressed. "But you know what, I grew up. And when you grow up, it’s a business."

View the original article to see embedded media.

"Superstar" was originally recorded by Bonnie Bramlett and her husband, Delaney, for their duo Delaney & Bonnie. The song originally had the title "Groupie (Superstar)" and was released in December 1969 as the B-side of their single "Comin' Home" via Atco Records. The track was also included in the couple's sixth album, D&B Together, which was the last record they worked on together before divorcing and pursuing solo careers. In 2002, 50 years after the album's release, Bonnie re-recorded "Superstar" as a piano ballad for her solo album, I'm Still the Same.

The track is about a woman who falls in love with a rockstar, and they share a brief love, but they end up splitting while the woman naively waits for him to return. Rita Coolidge, a popular artist who was a part of Delaney & Bonnie and Friends ensemble and a close friend of the duo, came up with the idea while she observed the relationships of groupies while on tour. Despite being the inspiration behind "Superstar" and being there when the band was writing it, Coolidge is not listed in the credits.

"When [Superstar] came out, and I saw Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell, Bonnie even said, 'Why didn't you say something, Rita?'" Coolidge told Relix in October 2016. "I said, 'Because I knew if I did, then Delaney would beat the [explicit] out of you and it wasn't worth it.'"

Richard Carpenter, the second half of the Carpenters duo, became aware of "Superstar" after watching Bette Midler singing a cover on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Their version of "Superstar" was produced by Richard Carpenter and Jack Daugherty, and was recorded with members of the Wrecking Crew, a popular Los Angeles-based recording group throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Their cover was included in their self-titled album and became the duo's fifth consecutive top-five single on the Billboard Hot 100. In addition, they were nominated for the Grammy for Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist.

The Carpenters, which consisted of siblings Karen and Richard, were best known for the distinctive soft musical style, especially with Karen's alto vocals and Richard's harmonizing. Born in Connecticut and raised in Southern California, Richard took piano lessons and studied music at California State University, Long Beach, while Karen played the drums. They first started performing together as a duo in 1965 before being signed to A&M Records four years later. During their 14-year career, the Carpenters recorded ten studio albums, as well as multiple singles and several TV specials.

Karen Carpenter, unfortunately, suffered from anorexia nervosa for almost her whole career, starting around 1975, which was driven by the pressures she received from fame and family. While visiting her family in Los Angeles, her mom found Karen lying unresponsive in their walk-in closet, then she was rushed to the hospital. The doctors confirmed that Karen's death was due to heart failure because of her eating disorder. She was just 32 years old.

After his sister's death, Richard Carpenter continued to produce recordings of the duo's music, releasing the posthumous Voice of the Heart in October 1983, eight months after Karen's passing, which included unreleased tracks left off of Made in America and other older albums. Now, Richard Carpenter, 78, is settled in Thousand Oaks, California, with his wife and kids. He still manages the legacy and discography for the Carpenters and oversees the Richard and Karen Carpenter Performing Arts Center.

Despite not making any new music for years, the Carpenters have still made a huge impact in the industry. Rolling Stone ranked the duo in tenth place in their list of the "20 Greatest Duos of All Time," while Karen Carpenter has been called "one of the greatest female vocalists" by NPR. Many musicians such as Michael Jackson, Akiko Kobayashi, Madonna, Beyonce, Phoebe Bridgers, Sheryl Crow and more have cited the duo as their inspirations.

"Superstar" and all of the Carpenters' discography are available on streaming platforms.

Burger King Unveils Brand-New Peppercorn BLT Whopper

Mon, 03/23/2026 - 2:28pm

Next to McDonald's equally iconic Big Mac, few fast food creations as instantly recognizable as the world-famous Burger King Whopper.

Arguably the most beloved item on Burger King's sprawling menu, the Whopper has managed to delight fans for the better part of seven decades.

While there's no beating the classic recipe featured in a traditional Whopper, Burger King is giving fans plenty of reason to celebrate with its latest menu innovation: the Peppercorn BLT Whopper.

Available on March 30 for a limited time at all participating Burger King locations, the Peppercorn BLT Whopper is the latest BK menu item inspired by the restaurant's fans, made specifically for BK's fans.

"Burger King is letting Guests rule the menu, again!" a spokesperson for the brand shared with us over email. "Building on the success of the Guest-inspired platform Whopper by You earlier this year, Burger King continues to bring Guest requests to life with the newest  Guest-inspired Whopper: the Peppercorn BLT Whopper."

A flavorful twist on the classic Whopper formula, the Peppercorn BLT Whopper features a quarter-pound flame-grilled beef patty topped with a generous layer of peppercorn mayo, fresh lettuce, crispy bacon, tomato and cheese, all served between Burger King's toasted sesame seed bun.

The brand-new menu item comes a few short months after similarly original inventions made through Burger King's Guest-inspired menu. This includes the previous arrival of the Ultimate Steakhouse Whopper and the Maple Bourbon BBQ Whopper earlier this year, as well as the BBQ Brisket Whopper and Crispy Onion Whopper last year.

If the prospect of a brand-new Whopper variation weren't already exciting enough, Burger King also confirmed the return of its seasonal beverage offering in the form of their Watermelon Lemonade, a thirst-quenching drink perfectly paired for any Whopper on BK's menu.

'The Rookie's Shawn Ashmore and Alyssa Diaz Talk Explosive Election Drama That Threatens Wesley and Angela's Marriage (Exclusive)

Mon, 03/23/2026 - 2:27pm

Wesley Evers’ (Shawn Ashmore) race for District Attorney is only a few days away on tonight’s episode of The Rookie. And Vivian Eckert (Necar Zadegan) continues to play dirty even though Wesley continues to take the high road, and it’s costing him the election.

“I think that’s what is charming about Wesley,” Ashmore exclusively tells Parade when asked if Wesley thought the campaign would get as unscrupulous as it has. “I think that he was not even aware that people would go to those depths.”

That said, Wesley isn’t totally naïve. He moved from being a defense lawyer to becoming an assistant district attorney in order to try to fix the system from the inside, so he’s aware that there are things that need repair. He also knew it was going to be a challenge.

“The only reason he really ran for the DA was kind of like, not forced to, but almost guilted, I feel like, because they were like, ‘Vivian’s horrible. You know Vivian’s horrible. You’re the only person that right now can stand up against her.’ And so, I think he knew it was going to be dirty. I just didn’t think he knew it was going to be this dirty,” Ashmore continues.

Angela (Alyssa Diaz), on the other hand, is more pragmatic, having spent years on the street before she was promoted to detective, so she’s pretty much seen it all, and she isn’t surprised that Vivian is playing dirty pool.

“I think it’s her years as a cop, and that’s the beauty of Wesley and Angela,” Diaz tells Parade. “They’re definitely opposites of each other and how they see things. And so, yeah, I definitely feel like she’s a bit more savvy on how everything is interplaying with itself.”

But even Angela didn’t expect Vivian to attack her marriage by having Elijah (Brandon Jay McLaren), a disgruntled former client of Wesley’s, accuse him of cheating on her with Monica (Bridget Regan). The flip side of that is that Angela doesn’t believe it, and that’s something that Vivian can’t even begin to imagine. She doesn’t understand their love. But she does understand that it’s just days before the election and a cheating spouse will help her in the numbers.

“I definitely think they have such a strong love, like no way,” Diaz says. “The way that I explored it, it was like possibly a little bit of doubt, but at the same time, to add complexity. But she also can’t show Elijah any weakness, any vulnerability. She has to stay strong. I would say 98 percent, no way he’s going to [cheat]. And then a little 2%, ‘Well, he did cheat on his ex-fiancé.’ I think it’s very human for that, but at the end of the day, their love and, I think, they have great communication skills with one another is what keeps her faith in it.”

Shawn Ashmore, Alyssa Diaz

Angela and Wesley’s marriage is one of the more enjoyable stories on The Rookie, given the way the two interact. Showrunner Alexi Hawley created them as opposites and then put them together and their initial chemistry sparked into a romance that had viewers rooting for them, even though maybe on paper, the relationship doesn’t look like it works.

“When you’re with someone who’s an opposite, if the relationship is going to work, you’re forced to grow,” Ashmore says. “They challenge you, and you both have to be willing participants, and be like, ‘This person is forcing me to grow, to see a different perspective.’ And I think that’s what’s happened with Angela and Wesley. Complete opposites, madly in love with each other, and at a certain point, they realize that if this is going to work, I’m going to have to grow with this person. The things that they’re challenging in me, I’m going to have to achieve. I’m going to have to level up with them, and it’s on both sides.”

It’s also why Angela agrees to go along with Wesley when he decides to take the high road in the election, even when she’s tempted to give Vivian a little bit of what she’s dishing out.

“I think at the end of the day, both characters have that aspect to them,” Diaz says. “They want to do things the right way. That’s the only thing that never bites you in the butt is when you move through the world with integrity. And I think that definitely Angela does that. Given the world that she’s in, she sees what it is when you are corrupt, or you lie, it does eventually get you in the end, some way, somehow.”

And Ashmore agrees that that is one thing that Wesley has in common with his wife.

“His character is to do the right thing, but also just as an example, this season, Harper’s [Mekia Cox] interaction with Liam Glasser [Seth Gabel], was she justified and right? We as an audience know that he’s guilty, but because she does things in an inappropriate manner, it has made it worse in the long run. So, I think there’s a pragmatic element with Wesley. I think his character is to do the right thing, but also it’s like, once we go down this path, the line never ends. And now we’re constantly chasing. And again, this is the Vivian of it, versus the Wesley of it. How far will you go? How many lies do you have to tell to get to the top? And is it worth it in the long run?"

6 Unconventional Balance Exercises That Challenge Your Brain, Too

Mon, 03/23/2026 - 2:25pm

Working out is essential for building strength and maintaining a healthy, functional body. But did you know that it’s just as important to exercise your mind? Keeping your brain in top shape improves thinking and memory skills. In fact, regularly challenging your mind through fitness can prevent or put off cognitive decline. You might have expected the best brain workout to be traditional word games, but we’ve rounded up six unconventional balance exercises that put both your mind and body to work.

Balance naturally declines with age, due to changes in muscle strength, coordination, neural communication and vision—and your brain is a key player.

“The brain plays a central role because balance is a neuromuscular skill that integrates input from the eyes, inner ear and proprioceptors to maintain stability,” explainsMallory Fox, DHSc, MS; NASM master trainer, NASM certified personal trainer (NASM-CPT), NASM certified wellness coach (CWC). “Cognitive decline and slower processing speed further impact coordination.”

That’s where unconventional balance exercises come into play. These moves typically blend cognitive tasks with physical stability challenges.

“This approach forces the brain to multitask, improving coordination and mental agility,” Fox tells Parade. “It’s beneficial because it mimics real-life scenarios where we rarely perform movements in isolation, enhancing both physical and cognitive resilience.”

According toJulie Dermer, CPT and Master Soul Cycle Instructor, unconventional balance exercises require proprioceptive, visual and vestibular work that help you feel “mentally sharper.”

How Balance Training Stimulates the Mind

Balance exercises call for you to be on your A-game. According to John Oliver, lead dynamic stretch specialist at Life Time St. Louis Park (MN), and Isaac Kwarteng, personal trainer at Life Time Johns Creek (GA), this means consistent decision making, tweaking your alignment and being mindful of your senses—in turn, boosting coordination and attention.

Traditional cardio and strength training call for more “automatic movement patterns,” requiring less mental involvement overall.

Balance isn’t just a physical skill—it’s truly a “full-brain workout,” explains Dr. Hayley Nelson, PhD, Neuroscientist, Professor of Psychology and Founder of the Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience.

“Maintaining balance requires constant communication between the cerebellum (movement coordination), vestibular system (inner ear and spatial orientation), sensory cortex (body awareness) and prefrontal regions (attention and decision-making),” Nelson tells Parade. “As we age, these systems naturally become less efficient, which is one reason balance declines. Balance training helps keep these neural pathways active and adaptable. In neuroscience terms, it supports neuroplasticity, or the brain’s ability to rewire and strengthen connections, which is critical for preserving mobility, reducing fall risk, and maintaining cognitive function later in life.”

6 Unconventional Balance Exercises That Challenge Your Brain1. Single-leg balance with backwards alphabet

“[This balance test] combines stability with memory recall for cognitive stimulation,” Fox points out.

This type of drill presents a stellar challenge for your executive functions, including cognitive inhibition, attention control and working memory.

According to Dr. Nelson, “Reciting the alphabet backward requires mental sequencing and suppression of automatic responses, while balancing demands constant motor adjustments. Together, they tax the brain’s ability to prioritize, shift focus and maintain stability under cognitive load. These are the same skills involved in decision-making, multitasking and adapting under stress.”

Here's how to do it:

  1. Balance on one leg on a flat, solid surface.
  2. Keep your gaze focused ahead and your arms at your sides.
  3. Begin to recite the alphabet backward.
  4. Repeat on the other side.
  5. Complete 3 sets on each leg—30 to 60 seconds each.

2. Ball toss on BOSU while naming animals by letter

There’s a lot that’s going on in the brain when you combine a balance exercise with a mental task, such as naming animals by letter.

Dr. Nelson points out, “The brain has to coordinate multiple networks at once. Motor control systems are working to keep the body upright, while cognitive networks (especially in the prefrontal cortex) are managing memory, attention and mental flexibility.”

Your brain is performing “dual-task processing,” an essential skill you constantly rely on in everyday life (i.e., walking while talking).

“[This test] adds unpredictability and verbal recall to balance work,” Fox adds.

Here's how to do it:

  1. Stand on a BOSU ball.
  2. Toss a ball with a partner while naming animals starting with "A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” and so on.
  3. Perform continuous movement for 2 to 3 minutes.
3. Balance + toss (light ball, pillow or rolled towel)

“[This exercise is] playful and dramatically improves reaction time—perfect for aging strong,” Dermer tells us.

According to Dr. Nelson, incorporating the instability aspect enhances the brain’s workload productively.

“The nervous system receives more variable sensory input from muscles, joints and the inner ear, which forces the brain to process information faster and more precisely,” she explains. “Adding a moving object like a ball engages visual tracking, timing and hand-eye coordination, further increasing neural demand.”

Here's how to do it:

  1. Balance on one leg.
  2. Toss a light object—ball or small pillow—between your hands at chest level.
  3. To progress the exercise, toss the object at a higher height or off to the side.
  4. Switch sides.
  5. Perform 3 sets, 20 to 30 seconds per leg.

4. Slow-motion lateral walk with pause (controlled instability)

“It looks simple, but slow movement forces your stabilizers and brain to work overtime. [This move is] great for the hips, ankles and fall-proofing," Dermer says. “The pause requires the brain to constantly adjust tiny shifts (vestibular plus cerebellum plus somatosensory cortex).”

Here's how to do it:

  1. Take a big step out to the right.
  2. Pause for 2 to 3 seconds while “mid-air” before setting your foot down on the ground.
  3. Slowly bring the other foot in.
  4. Repeat for 8 to 10 steps before stepping to the left.
  5. Perform 2 to 3 sets per side.
5. Heel-to-toe walking with patterned counting

“[This exercise] adds a rhythmic cognitive component, enhancing coordination and mental agility,” Kwarteng says.

Verbal tasks engage your language networks—especially in the left hemisphere—while balance works your sensory and motor systems.

“When you combine the two, the brain must rapidly switch, integrate and allocate resources across networks,” Dr. Nelson explains. “This supports cognitive flexibility, a core executive function that allows us to adapt, shift strategies and think creatively.”

Here's how to do it:

  1. Start to walk in a straight line, placing your heel directly in front of your toes.
  2. While walking, count in a pattern—whether that be Fibonacci sequence or alternating between prime numbers.
  3. Walk the full length of a 10-foot line three times, aiming for smooth and controlled movement.

Related: Stop Doing This by Age 60 To Protect Your Brain

6. Step-and-react drill

Finally, the step-and-react drill is a great exercising for challenging both the brain and your balance.

Here's how to do it:

  1. Stand in the middle of a small yet open space.
  2. A partner will call out cues like “forward,” “back,” “left,” or “right,” which you will immediately react to. Quickly take a step in that direction, regain your balance and return to the center.
  3. Perform 2 to 3 sets of 12 to 20 reps.

These unconventional exercises provide a stellar challenge for both your body and brain. Not only do they channel daily movement, but they also help you continue to lead an active, independent life well into your golden years. Weave them into your routine and focus on your breath work.

Costco Just Launched a New Kirkland Signature Product—and Shoppers Are Running

Mon, 03/23/2026 - 2:25pm

A new Kirkland Signature product is quietly hitting shelves and generating significant excitement among shoppers. From group chats to social media, people are already talking, and let's just say this one is getting a lot of attention.

Costco shoppers, like @costcohotfinds, are spotting Kirkland Signature sparkling energy drinks, sold in a 24-pack for just $16.99. The variety pack includes peach, orange and tropical flavors, and shoppers are already picking favorites, with peach being the early standout. Each 12-ounce can packs a punch with 200 milligrams of caffeine, putting it right in line with some of the most popular energy drinks on the market, like Celsius.

Why Everyone's Talking About It View this post on Instagram

Part of the excitement comes from the value. Energy drinks can get expensive fast, and Costco is known for undercutting big-name brands with its Kirkland Signature line. Shoppers are already comparing these to Celsius, with some even calling them a direct dupe. Considering a typical 12-pack of name-brand energy drinks can cost more than this 24-pack, it's easy to see why people are racing to try them.

There's also a bit of humor mixed into the hype. Costco has made headlines in the past for releasing products that closely resemble higher-end brands, like its viral comparisons to Lululemon. Now, shoppers are joking that this latest release could spark similar conversations and potential lawsuits in the beverage world.

That said, not everyone is jumping in without hesitation. The 200 milligrams of caffeine per can is a big selling point for some, but others are taking a more cautious approach. For anyone sensitive to caffeine, that's definitely something to keep in mind before cracking open a second can.

A Budget-Friendly Boost

For fans of energy drinks, this might be one of the best deals Costco has dropped in a while. The price alone makes it worth a try, especially for anyone looking to swap out their usual morning coffee or afternoon pick-me-up. The sparkling format also gives it a lighter, more refreshing feel compared to heavier, syrupy options.

Whether you're stocking up for busy workdays, workouts or long drives, this new Kirkland Signature find is shaping up to be a go-to. And like most Costco favorites, it might not stay under the radar for long.

If you’ve been thinking about trying a new energy drink, now might be the time to make that Costco run. Just don't be surprised if you leave with more than you planned.

Madonna Re-Enacts 'Like a Virgin' Video and Brings a Partner in Crime This Time

Mon, 03/23/2026 - 2:15pm

No, you didn't just travel 40+ years back in time to 1984. Pop diva Madonna, 67, really is in a gondola in Venice singing "Like a Virgin" in real time. The singer recently shared the fun tribute to her hit song and its well-remembered music video on Instagram. But this time, she brought a very cool friend to sing along. It's actress Julia Garner (Ozark, Inventing Anna), 32.

Madonna and Garner have been spotted together several times around Venice, Italy, filming on the set of Seth Rogan‘s The Studio. They are both reportedly joining for Season 2, but we don't yet know if they're playing themselves or other roles in the Emmy-award-winning, Apple TV show. It's pretty exciting seeing these two amazingly talented women hanging out and sharing all that Blonde Ambition though.

Of course, the real shared project fans really want to know more about is the much-teased biopic about Madonna’s early career, in which Garner is said to be playing the younger Material Girl. Last we heard Netflix had picked up the biopic for a possible limited series and Garner was still playing the lead, but there have been no recent updates on its progress.

"Like A Virgin……again and again. 🇮🇹" the caption on the cute video with Garner and Madonna reads:

The "Like a Virgin" single was released in October 1984, and the video came out in November 1984. And of course, anyone who was paying attention in 1984 knows the release of the song was highly teased by Madonna's controversial performance at the very first MTV Video Music Awardsin September 1984. During the unforgettable performance, the badass bride of Madonna, in her iconic lacy bustier "wedding dress" and "Boy Toy" belt ascended from a gigantic wedding cake and absolutely destroyed her veil after subjecting it to a very sexy floor grind.

And the world was never the same after that.

For those of you current or past Madonna-wannas out there, this will truly transport you.

Hoda Kotb Celebrates the ‘Best Dad’ in Sweet Birthday Post

Mon, 03/23/2026 - 2:14pm

The former Today host gave ex-fiancée Joel Schiffman a major shout-out on his big day. Even though the couple is no longer together,Hoda Kotb still showered the dad (to the pair’s two daughters) with birthday praise.

In a sweetly sentimental Instagram post, Kotb wrote, “Happy bday to the best DAD!” Even though the anchor and the financier are no longer together, it’s clear that co-parenting is going well. For that matter, it’s going more than well.

View this post on Instagram

Kotb, now 61, and Schiffman (who just turned 68) went public with their relationship back in 2015. After adopting daughters Haley Joy in 2017 and Hope Catherine in 2019, the couple made it official and announced their engagement. Three years later, during an episode of Today, the morning co-host confirmed that the relationship had ended.

Even though the pair split, they still remain committed to parenting their two children together in an amazingly amicable way. And maybe that’s why fans weren’t totally surprised by the loving post. Along with her heartfelt message, Kotb also shared two pics of the family—an absolutely aww-dorable photo of Schiffman with their girls and one of the whole fam.

Forget about a fancy schmancy soiree with celeb guests and a catered meal. The group shot proves that stars are just like the rest of us. Instead of fine china and silver servingware, the Hotb-Schiffman clan is seen celebrating with a homemade cake, unicorn plates, and a bevy of balloons in the background. We’re wondering if the girls baked the delish dessert or if the frosted sprinkle-topped treat was mom’s handiwork.

Fans chimed in with birthday wishes for the dad, as well as applause for the family’s enviable dynamic. The post racked up plenty of positive comments, such as “What a beautiful family,” “Awe love seeing you all together!” and “I am so happy that you remained friends through all of it and that he is so present in the girls’ lives. It takes a really special bond for that to work.” Another one of Kotb’s supporters added, “Love this—the epitome of grace and elegance. Co-parenting at its finest.” We couldn’t agree more!

Of course, this isn’t the first time since the split that Schiffman has popped up in Hoda’s posts. The celebrity mommy celebrated the holidays with a cute Christmas Santa hat selfie, featuring her daughters and Schiffman (cradling the family’s dog Waffles) huddled beside Kotb’s mom and sister

If these posts are any indication of what the future holds, the anchor’s fans have plenty of family co-parenting pics to look forward to!

1970 No. 1 Hit Ranked Among Best ‘Soft Rock Songs’ of All Time Became a Timeless Classic

Mon, 03/23/2026 - 2:09pm

The soft-rock genre dominated the music scene in the 1970s. From Carole King to Fleetwood Mac, hundreds of artists have topped the charts with soft-rock anthems, creating songs so powerful they persevere for decades.

In 2024, Ultimate Classic Rock ranked the 40 best soft-rock songs, organizing a list of some of the greatest works in the genre. Alongside classic hits like the Beatles' 1969 song "Something" at No. 34 and America's 1975 song "Sister Golden Hair" at No. 33, Bread's hit "Make It With You" secured the No. 38 spot.

Released in 1970, "Make It With You" severed as the lead single on the band's second studio album, On the Waters. Upon release, the three-minute track became an instant classic, topping the Billboard Hot 100 chart within only two months and remaining at No. 1 for an entire week. The track also peaked at No. 5 on the U.K. Singles Chart, marking it a global phenomenon.

Written by frontman David Gates, the song tells the story of taking a chance on love. Its intimate and romantic tone is highlighted through introspective lyrics and a mellow acoustic melody. "Make It With You" defined the band's signature sound, marking a distinct shift from their original psych-pop style toward something more acoustic and melodically focused—a hallmark of the '70s soft-rock era.

"Make It With You" launched Bread into global stardom, ultimately acting as the catalyst for their success in the '70s. The band is recognized as a major influential force in bridging the gap between the pop scene of the '60s and the singer-songwriter movement of the '70s.

Throughout their career, Bread experienced significant commercial success and critical acclaim. The band's accolades include a Grammy nomination, seven Gold Record awards, two Gold Singles and multiple Platinum certifications. Their legacy endures today as an inspiring musical force with major artists such as Frank Sinatra, Dolly Parton and Aretha Franklin covering their work.

In 2006, the group was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame followed by an induction into the Hit Parade Hall of Fame in 2008, attesting to the group's dominance and lasting legacy as soft-rock pioneers.

Chopping, dicing, and elegant chiffonade—none of it is my favorite part of cooking. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it's the part I actively avoid. My knife skills are a real work in progress (heavy on the work). If it weren't for my deeply ingrained need to save money, I would absolutely be buying every vegetable pre-chopped and calling it a day.

But here's the thing, sometimes all it takes is a little mood boost to make a dreaded task feel slightly less annoying. And lately, I've been thinking that maybe, just maybe, the right setup could change my outlook. Enter these cutting boards from IKEA. They're bright and cheerful, which is not something I ever thought I'd say about a cutting board.

BERGTUNGA Cutting board - set of 2, $5.99 at IKEA

Shop It!

The IKEA BERGTUNGA cutting board set features two polyethylene boards, which is really just a fancy way of saying plastic. The larger of the two is a bright yellow and measures 13⅜ inches by 9½ inches, while the other is a vibrant lilac and a little smaller at  9½ inches by 5¾ inches. Both are dishwasher-safe and easy to clean. But another great feature is the handle cutouts, convenient for carrying the cutting boards from your countertop to the stove. Another great reason for the handles? This allows them to be hung up on a wall for simple storage with easy access.

IKEA shoppers love this duo, particularly because of those great colorways.

"Loved the colors and sizes," writes a reviewer. "We got it for our daughter who's learning to help in the kitchen and now she owns and loves this set!"

Another customer is designing specific tasks to each board.

"Using colors to designate specific use, these boards are easy to use, lightweight and clean easily in the dishwasher," they wrote.

IKEA is really slaying spring with poppy colors that add a little more interest to everyday items. It's selling a pretty lilac storage unit perfect for organizing and displaying collections, as well as a blue outdoor storage cabinet that's ideal for patio areas. Of course, the retailer's space-saving game is also strong, with bookcases that fold out into tables and outdoor nesting tables that work great in small spaces.

Dwayne Johnson Shows Off Dramatic Transformation For 'Moana's New Trailer

Mon, 03/23/2026 - 2:04pm

We're still a few short months away from the release of Disney's highly anticipated live-action remake of Moana, but a new trailer for the film has officially given fans a first look at Dwayne Johnson's beloved character, Maui, in the film.

One of the few actors from the original animated film to return for the new remake, Johnson reprises his role as the self-centered demigod for 2026's Moana.

In the new trailer for the film, viewers are entreated to a more in-depth look at Johnson's character, including an up close and personal look at Maui's luscious hairstyle, ripped physique and animated tatoos.

"Maui, demigod of the wind and sea!" Catherine Laga'aia's title character says in wonder when she first meets Maui in the trailer.

"Hero of men," Maui humorously adds to his list of titles. "So it goes like this, 'Maui, shapeshifter, demigod of the wind and sea, hero of men... Ah! Women too. Men and women."

As fans of the original movie might remember, Moana follows the title character as she embarks on a quest to save her island from imminent destruction. To do so, the young princess must track down the disgraced trickster Maui, convincing the immortal demigod to aid her in her mission.

Originally released in 2016, the animated version of Moana earned critical and financial acclaim from audiences around the globe. Starring Johnson, Auli'i Cravalho, Rachel House, Temuera Morrison and Jemaine Clement, the movie wound up earning two Oscar nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song, eventually spawning a sequel with 2024's Moana 2.

The new version of the film serves as yet another Disney live-action remake in the company's lineup, following in the footsteps of past releases like The Jungle Book, Dumbo, Aladdin, The Lion King, Mulan, Snow White and The Little Mermaid.

Kendra Duggar Arrest Video Released Amid Child Endangerment Charges

Mon, 03/23/2026 - 2:03pm

Kendra Duggar's arrest video has been released.

The 27-year-old was seen being booked into jail in new intake footage obtained by Page Six on Monday, Mar. 23—three days after the Counting On star was first arrested. The footage appeared to be recorded just after her mugshot was taken.

In the clip, Kendra is seen wearing light blue jeans, a brown T-shirt, and white slides. The video starts with her sitting on a bench while handcuffed and speaking to a law enforcement official.

Kendra was then taken over to another side of the room where she is asked to place her hands on the wall while an officer gives her a pat down.

Her teeth are examined before another officer asks, “Are we done with her?”

She then removes her shoes before the officer walks her into another room with her hands secured behind her back.

On Friday, Mar. 20, police in Tontitown, Arkansas confirmed via a press release that they’ve filed new charges against Kendra’s husband Joseph Duggar.

Joseph, 31, was previously arrested and charged for Lewd and Lascivious Behavior, involving unlawful sexual activity with a minor on Wednesday, Mar. 18.

The new charges in Arkansas—unrelated to the previous charges, which were filed in Florida—are four counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor, as well as four counts of second-degree false imprisonment.

Police later confirmed that Kendra is facing the same charges as her husband related to the Arkansas case.

Authorities arrived at the Duggar family compound around 1 p.m. on Mar. 20 to serve an arrest warrant for Kendra, however, she was not at home at the time, per local outlet KNWA/FOX24.

According to the sheriff’s office, Kendra later was arrested and booked into the Washington County Detention Center in Fayetteville, Ark., at 4:56 p.m. local time. She was released after paying her bond, which was set at $1,470, and spent less than two hours in jail.

Kendra’s booking shows she has a court date for the Arkansas charges on April 29. Joseph is scheduled to appear in court on that date as well.

World’s Bargain Dream Homes Is Finally Coming to HGTV

HGTV first announced World’s Bargain Dream Homes back in October, as part of a slate of 2026 shows for the network. And now, we finally have more particulars about the reality series.

World’s Bargain Dream Homes, produced by Twenty Twenty Television, will chronicle "adventurous homebuyers" on the hunt for affordable homes all around the world — typically with budgets of $150,000 or less. In each episode, new house hunters will pair up with a local real estate agent in their "fantasy location," including Panama, Costa Rica, Italy, Spain, France and Greece.

It seems like World’s Bargain Dream Homes will follow a very similar format to House Hunters International, with the caveat of all the buyers having "bargain" budgets.

In the series premiere of World’s Bargain Dream Homes, a house hunter from Tennessee will travel across the pond with her bestie in tow, in search of a home in Crete. Her budget for her new home on the picturesque Greek island is $120,000, and the episode will see her "discover the magic of local life, breathtaking bargain homes and the surprisingly low cost of living," per HGTV.

“With this programming order, HGTV is delivering more of our tried-and-true formats that drive consistent ratings for the network, while also featuring new talent and concepts to engage our devoted fans and attract different audiences,” Howard Lee, Chief Creative Officer at Warner Bros. Discovery, stated in October, when World’s Bargain Dream Homes was first announced.

When Does World’s Bargain Dream Homes Premiere? Here's How to Watch and Stream the Show

The two-episode series premiere of World’s Bargain Dream Homes will air on HGTV on Tuesday, April 14, 2026 at 9 and 9:30 p.m. ET/PT. The first season will have 12 episodes, with another new episode airing each week.

Each new episode will hit HBO Max and Discovery+ for streaming the next day, starting Wednesday, April 15.

New York Times Bestselling Author Ranked as No. 1 'Most Anticipated' Mysteries & Thrillers on Goodreads

Mon, 03/23/2026 - 1:54pm

If you’re looking for a new mystery novel, look no further than Ashley Elston’s second adult novel. Hot off the back of First Lie Wins, she is back with Autonomy of an Alibi, and the best thing is that it’s already available to purchase.

It’s ranked as one of Goodreads ’ “most anticipated” mystery and thriller of 2026, coming in at the top due to the release date of Jan. 13, 2026. Surprisingly, it seemed to go under the radar during the release month, but that doesn’t mean it’s not one to now immediately put on your to-read list.

‘Anatomy of an Alibi’ Is Ashley Elston’s Second Adult Novel

Elston made it to No. 1 on the New York Times’ Bestsellers list with her debut adult novel, First Lie Wins. Sure, she had novels out before, but they were all in the Young Adult sphere, and mostly within the romance genre. It was only with First Lie Wins that she branched out and immediately captured the attention of readers.

Now it’s time for the highly anticipated follow-up. While First Lie Wins focused on one woman, Anatomy of an Alibi focuses on two female protagonists. It’s another novel set in the south, and this time, there’s a murder that pulls two strangers together in ways they never imagined.

Camille Bayliss is an out-of-towner at Chantilly’s Bar, and she is noticeable to everyone there. However, it turns out that Camille wasn’t in the bar that night. Instead, Aubrey Price was. The two women had hatched a plan to get answers from the same man, Benjamin Bayliss. The problem with them switching places for a night is that they struggle to get an alibi when Ben is found murdered.

One of Six ‘Most Anticipated’ Thrillers on Goodreads

The “most anticipated” list on Goodreads splits up books by genre, and there are only six listed out of the thrillers and mysteries for 2026. It’s not surprising when you consider just how hot First Lie Wins was.

While Anatomy of an Alibi isn’t scoring as high with readers as Elston’s debut adult novel did, it’s still landing strong reviews. It is just behind First Lie Wins’ 3.99 star rating with a 3.85 rating, making it clear that Elston avoided the sophomore slump that can hit many authors.

Secret Live of Mormon Wives’ Jordan Ngatikaura Files Restraining Order Against Jessi Draper Amid Divorce

Mon, 03/23/2026 - 1:44pm

The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives' Jordan Ngatikaura has filed for a restraining order against his wife Jessi Draper just days after he filed for divorce.

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Jordan filed the temporary restraining order request on Friday, Mar. 20 in his pending divorce case against Draper. That same day, Draper filed her opposition to the TRO.

The outlet reports that no further details about the nature of the claims in the documents are available at this time.

The restraining order request also comes shortly after an unconfirmed report from the gossip site DeuxMoi alleged that Draper will share her side of the divorce on Alex Cooper's Call Her Daddy podcast.

On Thursday, Mar. 19, TMZ broke the news that Ngatikaura had filed for divorce. In seasons 3 and 4 of Mormon Wives, viewers saw the couple deal with several marital issues, including Draper's affair with Vanderpump Villa's Marciano Brunette while she and Ngatikaura were separated.

The penultimate episode of season 4 also showed Draper reviewing her prenuptial agreement and admitting she was considering divorce from her husband of 5 years.

Ngatikaura addressed the split in a statement to TMZ, saying, “This has not been an easy decision and it comes with a heavy heart. I’m grateful for the shared memories and the lessons. While our paths are now moving in different directions, my priority remains my children and ensuring they feel loved, supported, and protected through this transition.”

“I am committed to handling this next chapter with kindness and respect. I kindly ask for privacy and understanding as we navigate this as a family," he added.

The former couple share two children together—son Jagger, 5, and daughter Jovi, 3—along with Ngatikaura's daughter Peyton, 13, from a previous relationship.
