One of the highly publicized yet secretive relationships of the early 2000s was Larry Birkhead and Anna Nicole Smith. Decades later, Birkhead is looking back at those tumultuous years and reveals there was a "cult" vibe to their romance and living situation.

The two originally met in 2003 at the Barnstable-Brown Gala during Kentucky Derby weekend, with Birkhead being a photographer and Smith already being a major celebrity. Surprisingly, the two never went fully public with their relationship, with Smith wanting to keep her personal of "being available" and Birkhead having often described it as being difficult and unusual.

Their relationship lasted two years, with Birkhead opening up on Bunnie Xo’s Dumb Blonde podcast that having spent time as the late model's home felt like a "cult."

"It kind of felt a little cult-like, like we were in some kind of cult," the 53-year-old said. The conversation arose when Bunny Xo mentioned that there was always speculation that Smith's attorney, Howard K. Stern, was in love with her.

During their relationship, Birkhead had moved in with Smith and became her personal photographer. The two didn't live alone, with Smith's entourage also living on the premises, with Birkhead revealing he resisted being a part of them.

"I maintained independence [or] I tried to as far as I could. I still worked and did my own thing. I wasn’t asking her for money, that kind of stuff. The people in the house, they were having their bills paid," Birkhead said. “But at the same time, people in the house were working for her."

Some may remember that during their relationship, one of the biggest controversies was Stern's involvement and influence. While being her entertainment lawyer and closest confidante, Birkhead reveals he "stepped into [Birkhead and Smith’s] relationship territory" and "became involved."

Birkhead added that Stern also lived in the home, but didn't stay in a bedroom. Instead, he would sleep on a couch underneath their bedroom and accused Stern of  "stay[ing] around" to try and "figure out what [they] were doing" daily.

At the time, Stern also claimed to have been romantically involved with Smith, which was highly debated at the time. The birth of their daughter, Dannielynn, also led Stern to claim he was the father. Following Smith's death from an accidental overdose in 2007, the paternity test into who was the real father became a public spectacle. Birkhead was ultimately revealed to be the biological father.

A family's long awaited trip to the Bahamas left them $1,400 in the hole after they say they were turned away from the hotel they had planned to stay at. According to the wife, she and her husband had reservations to spend the night at the Marriott Courtyard, however when they arrived they were informed that the hotel had been overbooked, and the family's room was given away.

But, to add insult to injury, there were no other options nearby, and the family had to spring for the only room a hotel down the street had left, which was a pricey suite. And their story doesn't end there either, because they said repeated attempts to contact Marriott for reimbursement went unanswered. Here's what they say went down.

A California family reached out to a consumer reporter working for NBC News in the Bay Area, after they say Marriott Courtyard didn't honor their reservations during a family trip. It all went down when they headed to the Bahamas for an 8-day getaway. But, when they arrived the first night, where they told the reporter they planned to stay before checking into their resort for the remainder of their stay, they were greeted by a rude hotel staffer who informed them that there was no room at the inn.

“This lady says, ‘the rooms are all sold out. We don’t have any more rooms,’” Kristine Dworkin recalled. “And we were like, ‘this doesn’t make any sense. We have a reservation.’" That’s when Jimmy launched into the whole Seinfeld routine about keeping a reservation.”"  

Next, the frustrated mom says that her husband launched into the infamous Jerry Seinfeld bit from when he had a similar experience trying to rent a car, where Seinfeld blast the rental agent for knowing how to take a reservation, but not knowing how to keep a reservation.

With no other options available, the Dworkins were forced to check into a nearby Margaritaville, where the family's only choice was a $1,400 suite. “That’s certainly not money we budgeted for this trip," she said, before revealing how they expected Marriott to cover the expensive hotel room since they needed it due to the company's mistake. Only, that's not what happened. Instead, the Dworkins say that their pleas went unanswered until they got social media and an NBC reporter involved. Only then were they able to get restitution.

What Should You do if Your Hotel is Overbooked

According to a hospitality expert who spoke with NBC for the story, this is actually a common occurrence, since hotels frequently experience no-shows. They make a calculated risk by overbooking the stay, and then if they end up having more people than rooms, they are supposed to find alternative accommodations for their guests at no extra cost.

But, that clearly didn't happen for the Dworkins. So, what can you do to protect yourself? According to AAA, a lot actually. That's because the company says that hotels prioritize certain customers, are less likely to give you room away if you are:

• A member of the hotel's loyalty club or group
• There to check in early in the morning
• Staying for more than a single night
• Some one who booked directly through the hotel instead of a third-party service

Of course, these things do happen. And if they happen to you, hopefully you'll have a better experience than the Dworkins did when it comes to finding alternative accommodations and a timely reimbursement.

Miley Cyrus has been making headlines as she celebrates the 20th anniversary ofHannah Montana.

Cyrus returned "home" for the anniversary special, which is now streaming on Disney+ and offers behind-the-scenes footage from the Disney Channel show, interviews and special performances by Cyrus in the titular role.

Amidst all the nostalgia, Cyrus weighed in on fellow pop star TaylorSwift, who many might not know wrote the powerful hit, "You’ll Always Find Your Way Back Home," from the Hannah Montana movie.

Cyrus sent a bold message about Swift and her songwriting abilities, telling Call Her Daddy‘sAlex Cooper in the special, "Credit where credit’s due. Banger."

She further acknowledged that the song of the film's soundtrack "stands the test of time," adding of Swift, "She ate with that one.”

The 2009 country pop rock single was written by Swift and Martin Johnson, with the theme of the song emphasizing staying grounded and returning to your roots.

While it was a key moment in the movie, the song underperformed compared to Cyrus' other singles, peaking in the 81st spot on the Billboard Hot 100.

Swift, now a 14-time Grammy winner, even made a cameo in the memorable movie, appearing in the barn-party scene in Miley's fictional hometown and singing her track "Crazier," as Miley dances with her love interest.

Cyrus revealed what led to Swift's casting in the franchise film, joking, “Get the tea kettle,” before explaining, “So the way that Taylor Swift ended up in the Hannah Montana movie was because this was kind of the beginning of her career, and they were looking for someone that would authentically — no shade, I guess — be performing in a barn.”

“We both performed in the barn,” she underscored, referring to her iconic performance of "Hoedown Throwdown," adding, “And so she came into the performance.”

While Swift did not make an appearance during the 20th anniversary special, other major stars like Selena Gomez and ChappellRoan did.

Cyrus wasn't the only one to sing Swift's praises, as the star's co-writer, Johnson, told MTV at the time that working with Swift was "awesome" and echoed what many artists and songwriters have said in the present, " She's one of the most talented songwriters to work with, if not, the best."

"For such a young girl, she's so creative and spot-on. She knows the audience, she truly understands the kind of pop music that is from the heart and done in a tasteful way. She knows ways to make things pop and also make you feel it at the same time. We wrote a bunch of songs together and it was a lot of fun," he explained.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have a “mix of both fiction and non-fiction projects on the slate,” a source told People in an interview published on March 24. “There is a natural attrition as you work through the stages of development, but Archewell Productions will have programming across several streaming platforms over the next few years.”

Archewell Production Company and Netflix announced on March 23 that they have partnered to bring a new scripted show about the world of polo set in Wellington, Florida, Deadline reported. The plot for the unnamed project "revolves around the messy dynamics between two rival teams and the families that lead them," according to the outlet.

The concept is thought to be inspired by Harry’s 2024 “passion project” documentary POLO, which the Duke and Duchess of Sussex produced through their company.

An update was also provided regarding two additional projects that first garnered attention in 2025, when Meghan, 44, and Harry, 41, extended their creative partnership with Netflix through Archewell Productions with a multi-year, first-look deal for film and television. Their adaptation of Jasmine Guillory’s book The Wedding Date is in the works, and Meet Me at the Lake, an adaptation of Carley Fortune's novel, now has a director attached, per Deadline.

Earlier this month, reports circulated about tension between the Sussexes and the streaming giant. Variety reported on March 17 that Netflix was not looped in before the couple’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021 after stepping back as senior royals and relocating to California. Their sitdown with Winfrey happened a year ahead of the release of their docuseries Harry & Meghan.  

The report also claimed Netflix was "blindsided" by the release of Prince Harry's 2023 memoir, Spare, which shared intimate details about his life growing up in Buckingham Palace.

Netflix executive Bela Bajaria briefly addressed the reports and dismissed any speculation of drama during the “Next on Netflix” event on March 18. 

“Don't believe whatever you read,” Netflix’s Chief Content Officer said, per People. “Maybe we should all do a little fact-checking.”  

Bajaria also confirmed the streamer has “movies in development with them.”

A spokesperson for Harry and Meghan also disputed the claims to Variety, telling the outlet it was “categorically false” that Netflix was unaware of their interview with Winfrey.

Regarding the release of Spare, the representative added, “Netflix and Archewell had legal counsel involved to oversee the evolution of the deal, as is common practice for any deal changes in Hollywood.”

While the royal couple still has a lot cooking with Netflix, facets of their brand have moved on. Meghan's lifestyle brand, As ever, announced that it would be leaving Netflix to continue working “independently.”

"As ever is grateful for Netflix’s partnership through launch and our first year," a spokesperson for As ever told People on March 6. "We have experienced meaningful and rapid growth, and As ever is now ready to stand on its own. We have an exciting year ahead and can’t wait to share more."

The rep noted the young company would spend the year “establishing the brand and scaling it."

The Moana live-action trailer dropped on March 23, and while the Pacific vistas are breathtaking, the internet has already found its villain: Dwayne Johnson’s hair. For a $200 million Disney tentpole, Reddit users say the demigod of the wind and sea appears to have been outfitted with a "Spirit Halloween Three Musketeers wig."

The backlash is about a misunderstanding of the source material, fans say. In Polynesian culture, hair is more than a style—it is the vessel for mana, or spiritual power. During the production of the 2016 original, cultural advisors famously pushed Disney to give Maui a massive, flowing mane to reflect this status. "The hair is where the mana is stored," one Redditor noted. "When they were animating Moana, their Polynesian cultural advisors kept insisting they give him more and more hair until they had to invent whole new rendering techniques for it. So a terrible wig is terrible for several reasons. And, of course, the Rock is Samoan and knows this."

The technical choices only get weirder from there, fans say. Eagle-eyed Redditors were quick to point out a contradiction in the casting and styling of the two leads. "They casted [sic] a bald actor to play a curly haired character and gave him a wig, while casting a naturally curly haired girl to play a curly haired character—only to straighten her hair," one viral post observed. "they could’ve kept her hair natural to save money in the budget to make a better wig for the rock."

Director Thomas Kail defended the logistical hurdle to Entertainment Weekly, explaining that Maui’s wig alone adds seven pounds of weight when it gets wet. But for an audience that has seen Disney's animation department literally invent new software to get hair right, the "it was heavy" defense feels like a poor excuse for a $200 million budget.

There’s also the question of why the movie exists at all. With Moana 2 hitting theaters two years ago, social media users are left scratching their heads about a live-action remake. "I just don't understand why he's in the remake," a fan wrote, questioning Johnson's return to a role he already perfected. "So, he's just going to be giving The Rock's interpretation of a character played by The Rock?"

If Disney wants us to return to Motunui, fans say they need to stop treating cultural markers like mana as a line item they can trim. According to them, Maui doesn't look like a demigod—he looks like he's wearing the wrong outfit to a themed costume party.

Chad Gilbert is opening up about a frightening health scare and his long road to recovery.

The New Found Glory guitarist and vocalist revealed that he was rushed to the emergency room last month after suddenly losing control of his limbs in a Monday, March 23 Instagram post.

“On February 20th, I played a show in Nashville and was struggling to control the movements of my left hand. My left leg was getting weaker by the day and I started stumbling and falling at times. On the 23rd I was taken to the ER,” Gilbert shared in the caption. He then revealed that a CT scan led to a shocking discovery: doctors had found three tumors in his brain.

Gilbert underwent surgery on February 27 to remove the tumors, which he confirmed was successful. Since then, he’s been recovering in the hospital, sharing updates with fans along the way.

“My radiation oncologist described it like this: ‘this is not a fatal blow and not the end of your story, just the beginning of a new chapter,’” he wrote, offering a hopeful perspective to fans despite the difficult circumstances.

While the recovery process hasn’t been easy, Gilbert said he’s improving steadily and gaining strength each day. “My recovery has been bumpy at times but I’m feeling much better now and getting stronger by the day,” he said before thanking his fans, friends who have helped his family—wife Lisa Cimorelli and 4-year-old daughter Lily.

Gilbert has been candid in the past about his fight with metastatic pheochromocytoma, a rare form of adrenal gland cancer that spread to his spine and lungs.

More recently, he revealed in August 2025 he had resumed radiation treatments after doctors found what he described as “a small spot in my back.” Gilbert shared, “From rock to radiation—it’s scary, it sucks, and I wish it wasn’t a part of my life.”

Still, he’s remained focused on perspective and resilience. “But truthfully, through the hardships come new outlooks, gratitude, positivity, and a freeing new way to see life. I’m thankful that I’m still in the fight and look forward to putting this enemy to rest for good,” he added.

In 1977, the Bee Gees were riding high on the success of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. The legendary pop-rock trio, comprised of brothers Barry, Maurice, and Robin Gibb, closed out the year with the No. 1 song in the country.

The song,  “How Deep Is Your Love,” topped the Billboard Hot 100 on December 24, 1977, and remained there for three weeks. “How Deep Is Your Love” also won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group in 1978.

Nearly 50 years later, Billboard ranked "How Deep Is Your Love” one of the top 50 love songs of all time, on a list that included the group’s little brother Andy’s “Love is Thicker Than Water.”

The song was one of several Bee Gees hits on the soundtrack for the John Travolta disco movie Saturday Night Fever, but it was almost a fluke hit for the musical brothers.

Billboard noted that the Gibb brothers had not even seen the script for the movie when they wrote the soundtrack song, instead assuming there’d be a love scene in the film. In addition, the outlet revealed, “They intended the song for Yvonne Elliman, but their manager Robert Stigwood insisted they record it themselves.

Elliman’s husband, Bill Oakes, was the president of Stigwood’s RSO Records, but Stigwood felt “How Deep Is Your Love” would be better suited for the male trio’s voices.

In the book The Ultimate Biography of the Bee Gees, Stigwood is quoted as telling the group, "You've got to do this song yourself, you should not give it to anybody.”

They didn’t, and the rest is history. In a 2001 interview with Billboard, Barry Gibb even named “How Deep Is Your Love” as his favorite Bee Gees song.

The Bee Gees almost skipped ‘Saturday Night Fever’ altogether

The Saturday Night Fever soundtrack remains one of the biggest movie soundtracks of all time, but the Bee Gees almost didn’t do the music at all.

According to Stereogum, the Bee Gees weren't originally supposed to be involved with the movie, but Stigwood convinced them to write songs for the film, which they did over a weekend while in France. After Stigwood insisted they record “How Deep Is Your Love,” the Bee Gees tweaked the arrangement.

“A lot of the textures you hear in the song were added on later,” Barry Gibb once said, per American Songwriter. “We didn’t change any lyrics, mind you, but the way we recorded it was a little different than the way we wrote in the terms of construction. A little different for the better, I think; the title ‘How Deep Is Your Love’ we thought was perfect because of all the connotations involved in that sentence, and that was simply it.”

Yvonne Elliman recorded another Bee Gees-penned song

Elliman ultimately recorded another No. 1 hit song that the Bee Gees wrote for the movie, "If I Can’t Have You.”

In a 2011 documentary, Elliman looked back on her Saturday Night Fever hit. “I really loved ‘If I Can’t Have You,’ but I liked it that the song wasn’t typically disco as I wasn’t a huge disco fan,” she admitted, per UDiscovermusic. “The disco thing was fun, but it was glittery, and I wasn’t into glitter. I was really into classic rock, my jeans, and my guitar.”

Turning 52 today, she reminds fans why her charm and talent made her a beloved TV icon.

The Washington, D.C.-born actress started her career on-screen at a young age, appearing in commercials like Oreo, McDonald's, Mylanta and Six Flags.

From commercials, she made a seamless transition into acting, debuting in the comedy-fantasy film Impure Thoughts.

Although the science-fiction comedy My Stepmother Is an Alien was often credited as her early breakout role, it was the hit TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer that truly cemented her status as a rising star, thanks to her portrayal of Willow Rosenberg.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer also featured Willow’s character not just as Buffy’s loyal friend, but also highlighted her romance with Tara Maclay, played by Amber Benson. At the time, it was one of the first long-term lesbian couples on American television.

Expressing deep gratitude for the storyline, she shared how the show’s portrayal of a lesbian relationship has positively impacted fans over the years.

“To this day, there are so many people that have come up to me and told me their story,” she told BuzzFeed, adding, “I can't even describe what a nice feeling that is and to know that something I was a part of helped somebody get through a challenging time and have hope. The fact that it made them feel less alone or something, I'm just so happy that I can be a part of that.”

The actress considered working on the sitcom as something dear to her because of the cast and the crew behind it.

“It was such a special group on How I Met Your Mother,” she mentioned to BuzzFeed, “It was so much fun to go and get to play with those guys every day. We had the most incredible crew, and it was a dream job, honestly.”

In How I Met Your Mother, Josh Radnor, Neil Patrick Harris and Cobie Smulders starred alongside Hannigan and Segel as part of the main cast.

Interestingly, her two iconic roles landed her notable recognitions, including Best Supporting Actress on Television at the Saturn Awards and Best Choice TV Sidekick at the 2002 Teen Choice Awards for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, while she took home Favorite TV Comedy Actress at the 2010 People's Choice Awards for her role in How I Met Your Mother.

The beloved reality star's passing was announced on Instagram on Tuesday by her husband, Gareth Brisbane, who shared that she "passed away peacefully today, surrounded by love."

"To most of you, she was Mel Schilling - matriarch of MAFS and queen of reality TV. To Maddie and me, she was our wee Melsie: an incredible mum, role model, and soulmate," Brisbane wrote in a heartbreaking post.

“In her final moments, when I thought cancer had taken away her ability to speak, she ushered me closer and whispered a message for Maddie and me that will sustain me for the rest of my life,” wrote Brisbane. “It took all of her remaining strength … Even then, her only thought was for Maddie and me.”

When Did Schilling Share Her Terminal Diagnosis?

Two weeks ago, Schilling took to Instagram to share that the colon cancer she had been diagnosed with in December of 2023 was now terminal.

"Unfortunately, in late February 2024 during a routine scan, small nodules were discovered in my lungs. The cancer had metastasised and my world changed again in an instant. Over the past two years, while filming MAFS, I underwent 16 rounds of chemotherapy and was later told I was eligible for a groundbreaking clinical trial specific to my gene type, due to start in March 2026. Once again, my optimism soared that I might beat this thing," she shared.

However, she started to suffer from blinding headaches and numbness down her right side over Christmas. She soon learned her cancer had spread to the left side of her brain, and radiotherapy wasn't successful.

"My oncology team have now told me there is nothing further they can do," Schilling shared.

The star concluded by expressing her gratitude and encouraging others to get checked out if they had any health concerns.

How much of the 2026 Travis Kelce contract is guaranteed money?

Kelce has a guaranteed $12.2 million for the 2026 NFL season, but the rest of that huge sum may never see his bank account. He may also get an additional $3 million in performance incentives if the Chiefs have a successful run to the 2027 Super Bowl.

Other than his endorsement deals, Kelce has made investments in various businesses. These include Cholula (hot sauce), Hydrow (rowing machines), Indochino (men’s fashion), RealTruck (truck accessories) and ThePlayersTV (athlete-owned media network), according to Business Insider.

He’s also started some of his own businesses, such as his clothing brand, Tru Kolors, and his nutrition brand, Hilo. This is in addition to the New Heights podcast he does with his brother, which brings in millions in revenue every year.

While it’s impossible to know exactly how much money Kelce makes from his portfolio, he’s clearly investment- and business-minded, which no doubt pays dividends—literally and figuratively.

What is Travis Kelce's salary?

Travis Kelce’s annual salary was around $17 million, according to the details of the two-year extension he signed with the Chiefs in 2024. He will receive $34.3 million for the contract, or just over $17 million per year.

For the 2026 Travis Kelce contract, if Kelce does, in fact, stay with the Chiefs for another three years, he'll have a salary of $19.245 million, making him the highest-paid NFL tight-end in history.

How much does Travis Kelce spend on cars?

To match his mega-salary, Kelce has a bit of a reputation as a spender, particularly on cars. Aside from his trusty GMC Terrain, he reportedly owns an Aston Martin Vanquish, Mercedes-AMG G 63, custom Land Rover, Rolls-Royce Phantom and a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS convertible.

Just the base model of an Aston Martin Vanquish sells for nearly $100,000, but nicer models can run near $200,000—so it’s a safe bet that Kelce has sunk hundreds of thousands, if not millions, into his car hobby.

Kelce is regularly seen rocking designer clothes, jewelry and other expensive accessories. The Chiefs’ website even has a photo gallery dedicated to Kelce’s outfits over the years.

One of the brands Kelce likes to wear is Frère, an Italian tailoring house whose off-the-rack suits start at about $4,000.

Interestingly, Kelce and Swift reportedly both wore pretty much head to toe Ralph Lauren in their engagement photos. It's unclear whether that was planned, paid for or just a really big coincidence, but it's possible (though not confirmed) that the outfits were comped or that the couple were compensated for wearing them.

Days after a freak accident at LaGuardia Airport that killed two pilots and injured several others, those who survived the event are reflecting on those life-defining moments. One passenger recently revealed that the pilots’ final act was truly heroic.

What Happened in the Collision?

It was a perfect storm of events that led to the fatal collision. On the ground at LaGuardia, passengers aboard a United Airlines flight complained of feeling ill from a mysterious odor. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey dispatched a rescue truck to assist.

At the same time, in the air, Air Canada pilots were preparing their passengers for an emergency exit. They instructed people to leave their luggage and evacuate as quickly and safely as possible. The plane ultimately made a rough landing, and passengers believed they were in the clear—but that’s when the nightmare was just beginning.

“It was like a grinding sound. Then, a couple seconds after that, you just felt the collision,” passenger Rebecca Liquori, a registered nurse sitting in the emergency exit row, told NBC News. “It was like the loudest boom I’ve ever heard.”

What caused the collision is still unclear. Early reports indicate there may have been a series of contributing factors, including possible radio failures, runway miscommunication, and human error.

Air traffic control audio recordings revealed a controller saying, “Truck 1, stop,” after previously instructing it to cross the runway. Post-collision, audio captured a controller saying: “I messed up.”

“We didn’t know what was going on—if the plane was going to combust,” Liquori told the outlet. “Everybody was scared. Everybody thought they were going to die.”

The Life-Saving Efforts That Saved the 72 Passengers Aboard

Liquori knew she had to act quickly to get herself and her fellow passengers to safety; she had no idea if the plane might catch fire.

While she exited the aircraft in what she estimates was just three to four minutes, she emphasized that it was the unnamed pilots who made the biggest difference. She said she “felt them brake” as they hit the ground, slowing the aircraft before impact with the truck and ultimately absorbing the brunt of the collision.

“I’m just so appreciative that they were able to save us, but I’m just so sad that they weren’t able to make it home to their families,” she said. “I wouldn’t be here had it not been for the pilot acting quickly.”

Another passenger identified only as Joseph, who was traveling with his fiancée, also credited the pilots for their survival.

“I fully believe that these two pilots, who unfortunately lost their lives, did everything in their power to stop the plane and slow it down at the very last minute,” he said. “They deserve all the credit for being heroes that day.”

The investigation into the circumstances leading up to the collision is still ongoing.

Heart conditions are pretty serious on their own—there’s no doubt about that. You may experience scary symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, swelling and palpitations, for example (which are always signs to go to your nearest emergency room). Plus, heart disease is the leading cause of death for men, women and people of most racial and ethnic groups in the United States.

Unfortunately, in addition to all of that, a certain heart condition can increase your risk of a stroke. A stroke presents with symptoms such as weakness, headaches, mental and cognitive changes, chest pain and even hiccups. Plus, it’s a leading cause of death and long-term disability. 

The heart condition we’re talking about is atrial fibrillation, often referred to as “AFib.” AFib can cause a person to experience the heart symptoms mentioned above. It’s the most common heart condition, affecting 10.5 million adults (which is a whopping three times as many as previously thought).

How AFib Can Contribute To Stroke Risk

AFib is an irregular heart rhythm, and a stroke is when the brain doesn’t get enough blood flow—and the former causes the latter? Fairly often, actually. “AFib is a common cause of strokes and tends to cause severe strokes,” says Dr. Jonathan Sussman, MD, an electrophysiologist at Atlantic Health. In fact, AFib increases stroke risk fivefold, and about 22 percent of strokes are related to AFib. That’s far from nothing.

The explanation behind it all comes down to blood flow. “During AFib, blood flow becomes sluggish in the atria, or upper chambers of the heart,” explains Dr. Kevin Kwaku, MD, PhD, director of clinical electrophysiology at Dartmouth Health’s Heart and Vascular Center and president-elect of the Association of Black Cardiologists. “When blood flow slows, it tends to clot.” 

“These clots can travel through the circulation, obstruct blood flow to the brain and cause strokes,” Dr. Sussman adds.

Even if you feel relatively “fine,” you might not be in the clear, by the way. Dr. Sussman warns that “Many AFib patients have no symptoms but are still at risk.” According to Dr. Kwaku, “feeling few symptoms can be even more dangerous, as it can lead to delayed diagnosis.”

Additionally, other heart conditions can increase your risk of stroke—not just AFib. Examples include coronary heart disease, heart valve defects and enlarged heart chambers. 

So, as evidenced here, heart health helps the rest of your body stay healthy, too. That gives us all more reason to practice heart-healthy habits.

How To Reduce Your Risk of a Stroke from AFib

AFib isn’t entirely preventable, with aging and family history as unmodifiable risk factors, Dr. Kwaku says. However, some lifestyle adjustments can reduce your risk and improve treatment. Dr. Sussman clarifies that they don’t affect stroke risk directly very much, but they can do a great deal to help you manage AFib. Examples include regular exercise, minimizing alcohol use and managing other health conditions, such as hypertension, diabetes and sleep apnea.

When it comes to preventing a stroke caused by AFib, Dr. Sussman recommends medication or medical devices. “Anticoagulant medications, often known as ‘blood thinners,’ decrease the likelihood of clots and strokes,” he says. “Alternatively, devices can be implanted in the part of the left atrium where clots mostly form, to block blood flow in [and] out of that area and decrease the risk of stroke.”

Dr. Kwaku says there has been “an explosion in recent years in treatment options” beyond medications, including catheter pulse field ablation and left atrial appendage occlusion. While they sound scary, they're minimally invasive, he says, and can “markedly reduce symptoms and stroke risk from AFib.”

So yes, AFib can increase your risk of stroke—but at least it’s not something you’re powerless against.

Roughly one month after the death of his co-star Carrie Anne Fleming, Supernatural actor Jim Beaver has shared an emotional tribute to the actress on Facebook.

On February 26, 2026, the 51-year-old Fleming passed away from complications arising from her battle with breast cancer. Beaver, who portrayed Fleming's on-screen husband in the hit fantasy horror series, previously lost his wife to the same disease, a tragedy he referenced in his heartfelt tribute to Fleming.

"To find a soul mate once in life and lose her is unmitigated pain. To find one twice and lose them both is something that words cannot shape," Beaver wrote.

"To love and be loved is a pearl above price, but such pearls do come more than once or twice to the lucky," the 75-year-old actor continued. "But to find oneself paired with someone who not only loves and is loved, but who seems by magic or the grace of the gods to understand you, to want what you are, to want you to be what you are, who GETS you and never feels the need to have you defend who you are, and about whom you feel the same -- how many of us can say that spark of divinity has alighted on us once, much less twice?"

Discussing his grieving process, Beaver said that Fleming's death proved a serious toll for him both mentally and emotionally, calling to mind the immediate aftermath of his wife's death.

"Cecily's young death came near to destroying me. Far fewer know that I found something akin to that again some years after Cecily's death," he wrote. "Carrie Anne Fleming was cast as my wife on Supernatural in my fifth season on the show. I fell for her hard, and I did it mere seconds after meeting her. To my joy and shock, it seems the same thing happened to her."
