As a multigenerational family with three young children, we've been visiting Walt Disney World Resort for years. We love staying “in the magic” at the resort's hotels, hopping on free Disney transportation and taking advantage of the countless free things to do beyond the theme parks.

But it wasn't until I experienced the benefits of Disney Vacation Club firsthand that I realized just how many extra perks exist for members. Disney Vacation Club recently invited our family to visit during Welcome Home Weeks, an annual summer appreciation event exclusively for members. We stayed at a Disney Vacation Club property and got a taste of everything members enjoy year-round.

Here's why the experience was wonderful, along with the many benefits that have me seriously considering membership.

Hidden inside Disney's theme parks and resorts, Disney Vacation Club's private member lounges are exclusive, air-conditioned retreats where eligible members can relax with complimentary soft drinks, coffee, snacks and Wi-Fi.

At Walt Disney World, options include McKim's Mile House at Magic Kingdom, ImaginAtrium at EPCOT, Gateway to Discovery at Disney Springs and Top of the World Lounge — A Villain's Lair, perched atop Bay Lake Tower at Disney's Contemporary Resort.

All four lounges impressed us, but Top of the World Lounge stole our hearts. This elegantly villain-themed hideaway lets members watch the Magic Kingdom's nightly fireworks from a private terrace, with the show's synchronized soundtrack piped in for full effect.

“My favorite part of Top of the World Lounge is enjoying one of the best views of the Happily Ever After fireworks with minimal crowds, and it’s complimentary for eligible members,” said Disney Vacation Club member Christina Skowronek, a planDisney panelist.

We booked the Wicked Wind Down experience, a paid package that includes a table inside the lounge plus one drink, appetizer, and dessert per person—and it was one of the best meals I've had on Disney property. The portions are generous and the drinks are delicious. Our family shared a spread of herb-roasted shrimp, a hummus platter, two types of flatbread and a warm pretzel. And dessert was a showstopper: a towering slice of the chef's signature multilayered chocolate cake of the day.

Afterward, we stepped out onto the private terrace for a spectacular fireworks show. It was an evening our family will never forget.

Disney Vacation Club functions as an ultra-flexible timeshare: members purchase a real estate interest represented by annual Vacation Points. Each member selects a home resort and can book that resort 11 months before check-in, with access to book all other Disney Vacation Club resorts seven months out.

Ask any member their favorite benefit, and most will say the same thing: being able to book the rooms and dates they want at their home resort before everyone else.

“One of the best Disney Vacation Club perks is being able to book our home resort, Copper Creek Villas & Cabins at Disney's Wilderness Lodge, 11 months in advance. It helps me secure our daughters’ birthday trips, especially during busier seasons,” Skowronek said. “Then, at the seven-month mark, I can check for another resort we may want to try and easily modify our reservation online without canceling and starting over. I love the flexibility, and being able to see exactly how many points the change will require right on the website.”

As a family that often travels with kids, parents and grandparents, I've come to appreciate just how much a larger room can transform a trip. One of our favorite properties is the Cabins at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort, which sleeps six across a living room (complete with a queen Murphy bed and full kitchen) and a bedroom with a queen bed and bunk beds.

But it wasn't until I toured the Disney Vacation Club lodging at Disney's Riviera Resort and Island Tower at Disney's Polynesian Villas & Bungalows that I realized how many configurations exist for families of every size. Studios, one-, two- and even three-bedroom villas are available at many resorts. My favorite was the three-bedroom Grand Villa at Disney's Riviera Resort: a jaw-dropping 2,530 square feet that sleeps up to 12 adults and is decorated beautifully. (Also, I want to live there.)

Non-members can technically book Disney Vacation Club properties through the standard resort system, but the largest villas are so popular they're released first to members (and some are reserved exclusively for member booking), making it much harder for non-members to snag one. If spacious accommodations are a priority, membership is the way to go.

I first noticed the real value of Disney Vacation Club membership this past June, when our server at Biergarten Restaurant in EPCOT mentioned that members received 40 percent off lunch.

That's a substantial discount, and it's far from the only one. Members regularly save 10 to 40 percent on dining, merchandise, annual passes and special events. During Welcome Home Weeks, several of our go-to table-service restaurants offered that same 40 percent discount, including Hollywood & Vine at Disney's Hollywood Studios, Tusker House Restaurant at Disney's Animal Kingdom and Trattoria al Forno at Disney's BoardWalk.

Members also save 20 percent on standard merchandise at nearly every Disney-owned store inside the parks and resort hotels, and can purchase the Disney Sorcerer Pass, an annual pass tier exclusive to Disney Vacation Club members that saves non-Florida residents hundreds per pass compared with standard pass options. Additional savings extend to select nighttime events, holiday parties, water park admission and behind-the-scenes tours.

I knew members had access to exclusive events, but I hadn’t realized how special they were until we attended one ourselves. Moonlight Magic at Disney's Hollywood Studios is a private complimentary nighttime celebration for members, featuring character interactions, short wait times, DJ dance parties, a special showing of Fantasmic! and complimentary snacks and ice cream.

At our event, we spotted Chewbacca and R2-D2 while wandering Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, spun through Alien Swirling Saucers in Toy Story Land and posed for photos with WALL-E, as well as Ian and Barley from Pixar's Onward. We snacked on Jack-Jack's Num Num Cookies, Mickey pretzels, churros and Mickey Premium Ice Cream Bars. Especially during the sweltering summer months, there was something wonderfully refreshing about exploring a theme park at night without hats and sunscreen.

Moonlight Magic events typically take place eight to 10 times a year across different parks, and members can generally register for one event per season (winter, spring, summer or fall) so there are multiple options for members. On the bus to the event, we chatted with a family from Tampa who told us these private evenings are among their favorite parts of membership.

Other benefits include complimentary treats and dining experiences during Welcome Home Weeks, exclusive character experiences just for members (like the dance party we attended with Mickey, Minne, Donald, Daisy, Goofy and Chip ‘n Dale at Atlantic Dance Hall) and popular paid extras like Disney Vacation Club Member Cruises.

Part of what makes Disney Vacation Club's points system so flexible is the ability to bank points from the previous year and borrow from the following one. This is especially useful for anyone planning a bigger trip, a larger family gathering or a vacation that simply requires more points than usual.

And unlike a traditional timeshare, members aren't locked into one property. Points can go toward stays at any Disney Vacation Club resort—including those at Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Aulani: A Disney Resort & Spa in Hawaii, Vero Beach and Hilton Head—as well as select partner and Disney hotel properties around the world, including Disneyland Paris. “The memories extend far beyond the theme parks,” Skowronek said. “We used our points for a stay at Disney’s Vero Beach Resort, and my girls still rave about this trip. Whether a Disney Vacation Club membership makes sense for you depends on several factors: how often you currently visit Disney, which resort tier you prefer, how far in advance you like to plan and how many people typically travel with you. The financial commitment matters, too—membership involves upfront and annual costs, and contracts can run anywhere from 30 to 50 years.

“For our family, the numbers made sense,” Brignac said. “The benefit of Disney Vacation Club is that you get locked into today’s pricing, so 40 years from now when our daughter is using our contract, she’ll have inherited the price we paid when we bought in. And the flexibility is great; in the past 12 years, we’ve used our points to travel to almost every Disney Vacation Club resort in the country.”

But long before it became a wedding staple, the hit almost didn't see the light of day. Bon Jovi liked the tune, but perhaps not enough for it to land on the band's third LP, Slippery When Wet.

“It wasn’t that I didn’t want to record it. But I wasn’t all that impressed on the day that we wrote it,” the Grammy winner told PEOPLE Magazine.

He added that the first thing they created was the "simple chord progression, the melodies and the lyrics." The track's enduring bass line "came to life in the demo studio, when we took it back to the band and worked it up. That's how it became what it is."

Bon Jovi concluded, "We knew what we wanted, we just didn't have it, and so I was like, 'Yeah, it's good. Good day. Good day at the office,' and I was wrong. It's one of the biggest songs in our catalog."

"Livin' On a Prayer" reached the No. 1 position on Billboard's Top 100 on February 14, 1987, two months after its December 1986 release. It remained at the top spot for four weeks.

Additionally, the singer and songwriter told PBS NewsHour the song "evolved" from what was originally put to paper with Sambora and Child. "It was a very simple chord structure, the melody, the lyric, we knew all that," he began.

"But it came to life when the band got in the room. Tico came in playing the drums, and that's when it popped. That's when the key change happened," he continued.

"It was written with an acoustic guitar and a piano," Bon Jovi concluded. "It wasn't the first single on the album. 'You Give Love a Bad Name' was the first single. 'Prayer' was the second single and was so different."

"Livin' On a Prayer" hardly feels like a relic from 1986. Nearly 40 years later, it’s still the one track guaranteed to pull everyone from kids to grandparents onto the dance floor together.

Beloved Metal Band Announces Tour for the First Time in 9 Years

Kingdom of Giants, the melodic metalcore band, is celebrating a major career milestone as they announced a headlining tour across North America this fall.

In an Instagram update, the California band revealed the details of their 26-date trek from November to December, kicking things off in Washington and concluding the run in California.

Fans will get to see the metalcore veterans fronted by Dana Willax embark on their first headlining tour in nine years following their last headlining trek in 2017 for the All The Hell You’ve Got To Spare Tour, which celebrated the release of their third studio album of the same name.

Apart from that, the trek will also mark new bassist and clean vocalist JT Gutierrez’s first tour with the band after joining in June.

He replaced longtime member Jonny Reeves, who departed to join The Amity Affliction.

Adding to the excitement, Kingdom of Giants will share the stage with three special guests.

Fellow metalcore bands Deadlands, Holy Wars and Night Rider will perform as supporting acts on select dates of the upcoming North American Fall Tour.

1964 Hit Rock Song, Written by a 21-Year-Old About Growing Old, Took 40 Takes To Record

“When I Grow Up (To Be a Man)” was a popular Beach Boys song released in 1964. It was written by 21-year-old Brian Wilson and 22-year-old Mike Love. The song reached No. 9 in the US and No. 1 in Canada.

According to The American Songwriter, Wilson told Goldmine Magazine, ”I was inspired about what it was gonna be like to grow up. Will I like the things then as I did now? I wrote that in my early twenties. As I look back on that, I am happy with my life now, and I didn’t think I would be.”

In the memoir I Am Brian Wilson, he went into more detail about the song. He said, “I think about the crazy year of 1964, and I think about one of the most important songs from that crazy year, ‘When I Grow Up (to Be a Man).’ We did that song in early August, and it was out by the end of the month. That’s how fast everything went back then. The building was going up overnight. We did that song at Western, too, in room three, which was the best. We did almost 40 takes over six days. Can you believe that? 40 takes?”

He continued, “It’s exhausting to look at and to think of how far we went in search of the perfect thing. We didn’t know we were making history. But that’s what we were making.”

Love also wrote about the inspiration behind the song in Good Vibrations: My Life As A Beach Boy. He claimed it was inspired by Wilson's father, the band’s former manager. “Murry had bullied Brian for years," he said. "But he increasingly called into question his manhood. ‘If you were a man, you would tell Mike to stand closer to the microphone. If you were a man, you would tell [fellow Beach Boys] Carl and Dennis to brush up on their harmonies. If you were a man …’ Man came up all the time, which probably influenced Brian’s idea behind our 1964 song, ‘When I Grow Up (to Be a Man).’”

The Beach Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. Some of their other big hits include “Good Vibrations,” “Surfin’ USA,” “I Get Around,” and “California Girls.”

Molly Ringwald Reveals the Iconic Role She Regrets Turning Down

Molly Ringwald could have had Demi Moore’s iconic Ghost role — but the ’80s teen queen turned it down and now admits she regrets missing out on the supernatural blockbuster.

Ringwald is famously known for passing on several major roles, including Pretty Woman, Working Girland The Silence of the Lambs. But during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, she revealed that turning down Ghost is the decision she still thinks about.

“But Demi is great in it. So good for Demi, she did a great job,” Ringwald told a stunned Andy Cohen.

Cohen pointed out that playing artist Molly Jensen could have “changed the entire trajectory” of her career, prompting Ringwald to admit, “It was just not meant to be.” At the time, Ringwald reportedly said she passed on the film because she didn’t connect with the script or the material.

The actress has previously opened up about why she declined other high-profile roles, including Pretty Woman. “Julia Roberts was wonderful in it, but I didn’t really like the story. Even then, I felt like there was something icky about it,” she told The Guardian.

As for The Silence of the Lambs and Working Girl, Ringwald said she struggled to find the right opportunities after becoming a teen star. “I didn’t really feel like darker roles were available to me. The ones that I wanted to do, I didn’t get. I was too young for certain roles. I was at this weird in-between stage,” she explained.

During the Watch What Happens Live appearance, Ringwald also reflected on another iconic role, revealing the The Breakfast Club character she found the most frustrating to play.

“Claire in The Breakfast Club is kind of annoying,” she said, with Cohen agreeing: “She can be.”

Ringwald recently starred in the Off-Broadway revival of Are You Now or Have You Ever Been and is set to appear in the film One Night Only and the final season of Showtime’s Yellowjackets.

And it took place years before he jumped the shark.

The episode, titled "Three on a Porch," aired on Nov. 18, 1975, in the show’s third season, the first in which Fonzie became a central character. The storyline centered on Richie (Ron Howard), Potsie (Anson Williams), and Ralph (Don Most) trying to pick up girls at a lake resort, with Fonzie along to camp out with the gang.

In the closing scene, Fonzie tries to sleep under the stars but is kept awake by a chorus of noisy animals in the forest. As he rests his head on a log, footage is shown of birds, frogs, an owl, and a raccoon all making sounds. An irritated Fonzie soon sits up and lets out a two-word command: “Cool it!” The forest falls silent, and the Fonz lies down to rest with a final comment, “Let’s see Tarzan do that.”

The scene is pure Fonzie—and a step above the usual jukebox lyric and mirror/comb routine that helped define his cool.

Happy Days creator Garry Marshall once told The Guardian that he modeled the Fonzie character after a tough guy he knew as a kid.

“I grew up in the Bronx and patented him off a guy in my neighborhood called Anthony who could tie a rope to an ice truck and pull it along with his teeth. I always thought that was magical,” Marshall shared. “The furthest we took his ‘magic’ was when the gang went camping in the woods. All the crickets and owls were making loads of noise, and he says: ‘Cool it!’ And they stop instantly.”

Fifty years after the Fonzie silenced a forest, fans still talk about the moment on fan forums and social media.

“He’s so cool that even nature won't cross him,” one fan wrote in a YouTube comment.

“Nocturnal nature finds out Fonzie is in command as far as his surroundings, when sleeping outside!!!” another wrote.

“Cool it and the whole forest quits down ...now that’s power,” a third chimed in.

“It's 2026, have not seen this episode since it originally aired, I still think about this scene and laugh," added another fan.

“He went camping in his leather jacket and lies down to sleep but the wildlife and birds are keeping him awake so he tells them to “Cool It!” And they do, of course, because he’s the Fonz,” another fan recently wrote on Reddit.

Another fan called it the scene the show’s true “jump the shark moment,” writing, "He sits up and says ‘cool it’ and there is absolute silence. I think that was his first superhuman deed.”

Winkler once noted that he never wanted Fonzie to be a cliché cool guy, and he certainly wasn't.

"Everyone who's ever played a Fonz-like cool character has always done the same things: combed their hair, stuck cigarette packets up the sleeve of their T-shirt. I swore I wouldn't do any of that," Winkler explained to The Guardian. "I got the 'Heeeey' and the 'Whoaaa' from my favorite sport at the time: horse-riding.”

6 Cape Cod Towns That Are Perfect for a Multi-Generational Family Trip

My favorite Cape Cod trip was two weeks in one car with my husband and my daughter, and the thing I remember most is how little we had to plan.

We crossed the Sagamore and the rest just unfolded based on what we saw. We'd grab fresh lobster rolls from whatever shack appeared when we got hungry, would pull off for long walks on beaches we spotted from the driver's seat, and would snap lighthouse views any chance we got.

That's what makes the Cape so special. You don't have to drive far to stumble into a quaint town hugging a shoreline, cranberry bogs and shingled cottages and penny-candy stores. You can vacation at a pace slow enough that a seventy-year-old and a seven-year-old can both share in the enjoyment, and nobody is feeling rushed.

Part of the charm is the variety: the Cape is 70 miles long with 15 towns, all of which have something different and unique to offer. So I asked Angela Prout, co-founder of Shored Up Digital, what makes a town the right choice for not just a small family unit like mine, but one that includes aunts, uncles, grandparents, siblings, and more.

“A town works for three generations when it doesn’t force anyone into a compromise that will be unpleasant or uncomfortable, and options are accessible, with elements for everyone in the group to enjoy themselves," she says. "On the Cape, flat, short walks from parking to sand for aging knees and stroller wheels are ideal, plus enough going on that teenagers aren’t bored and toddlers aren’t overstimulated. It also needs a good selection of family-friendly restaurants that can seat a table of ten without a two-hour wait."

When I asked her which towns she'd recommend for this type of trip, she broke it down for us. So whether you're going for a long weekend or two weeks, these towns will give you the quintessential charm the Cape is known for in a routine that works for everybody.

Chatham

Everything in Chatham funnels to Main Street, and for good reason. "Chatham has a dense and walkable Main Street that keeps everyone entertained without a car," Prout says. Park once and work the rest on foot: the Chatham Candy Manor has been hand-dipping fudge since 1955, Yellow Umbrella Books is like straight out of a 90's movie, and the Ben Franklin five-and-dime sells the beach toys you most likely forgot.

Lunch or dinner is the Chatham Squire, the town's tavern. As a splurge, stay at Chatham Bars Inn, the 1914 grande dame above the fish pier, where, in early afternoon, the boats come in and seals crowd the observation deck. Friday nights in summer, bring chairs to the band concert at Kate Gould Park.

"Grandparents and young kids tend to peel off to calmer beaches or town centers by late morning, while teens and younger adults go find surf, kayaking, or bike trails, then everyone reconverges for dinner. Chatham handles this split especially well because it has both a walkable town center and beach access close enough that regrouping doesn't require a long drive," Prout says.

Falmouth

Falmouth has something no other Cape town can offer a mixed-age group—a way to cover far more ground without a single hill (a beacon for those 70+). The Shining Sea Bikeway runs 10.7 miles from North Falmouth to Woods Hole, and every foot of it flat and paved. You'll pass a cranberry bog and the Sippewissett salt marsh with a swim stop at Surf Drive Beach. Oddly enough, my daughter rode the whole thing without a complaint, which tells you a grandparent could too. The path ends where the Martha's Vineyard ferry leaves right from the village dock, and watching it go is a favorite activity for both kids and adults alike.

Back in town, give the kids an hour at Eight Cousins, the children's bookstore in the heart of Main Street since 1986, then get the surf-and-turf at the Quarterdeck, where the dining room is paneled in old maritime salvage. We stayed at the Coonamessett Inn, the old wedding inn on seven acres of gardens. Each room has iron beds, and you can't go to sleep without a slice of Eli's Tavern's famous carrot cake (which is big enough to split three ways).

Yarmouth

Yarmouth is one of Cape Cod's more budget-friendly picks, which is perfect for large groups. Route 28 runs through town with three straight miles of mini golf, fried clam shacks, and ice cream windows. Play the 18 holes at Pirate's Cove, where the course winds through caves and under waterfalls, then get a waffle cone at Cape Cod Creamery, whose flavors are named for Cape places. The Monomoy Mud Pie was my absolute go-to (I had it twice). When somebody wants a real meal, Captain Parker's Pub on the Parker River has won best chowder at the Cape's chowder festivals more times than any other kitchen. The Red Jacket Beach Resort sits right on the sand next to Smugglers Beach, the flat-sand, close-parking pick from Prout's list above, with pools for when the kids have reached their breaking point, and mom and grandma need some quiet book time.

Yarmouth is also one of the towns where a big group's rental budget goes furthest. "Yarmouth tends to have lower price points than Chatham or Orleans," Prout says. "In general, groups should be booking by March or April; the larger, well-located houses are largely gone as the season approaches. Also consider renting a block of adjoining rooms at a hotel or motel that is accessible to a downtown."

Orleans

Orleans has two very different beaches within ten minutes of each other, and between them they cover every age in the car. Nauset Beach faces the open Atlantic with real surf, real dunes, and the beach the teenagers will ask to go back to, while Skaket, on the bay side, suits the youngest and oldest. At low tide, the water pulls back to reveal a sandbar so flat you can walk for close to a mile, with tidal pools warm and shallow enough for a toddler to sit in and play. Just check the tide chart before hauling everyone to Skaket, though, because at high tide most of the beach disappears.

Everyone (locals and tourists) eat at Land Ho!, the tavern on Main Street that's been covered in license plates and business signs since 1969, and the Hot Chocolate Sparrow is the go-to for dessert, with hot chocolate, penny candy, and espresso for whoever's driving. The Little Inn onPleasant Bay, a bed and breakfast on a lawn that slopes toward the water, works if your group is small enough for a B&B. For larger groups, rent a house and remember Prout's March-or-April booking deadline. Orleans also borders the Cape Cod National Seashore, so you can hop over and explore the 40-mile coast at any speed.

Provincetown

Provincetown is the most famous town on the Cape and the least like the rest of it. Once an old Portuguese fishing port at the very tip of the peninsula has quickly became America's oldest art colony and one of its great LGBTQ+ beach towns, with drag marquees, gallery rows, and a smattering of fishing ports decorating the shore. Commercial Street is flat, benches face the parade, and the best entertainment in town is watching it go by, so grandparents and older adults can get time off their feet.

The Dolphin Fleet has run whale watches to Stellwagen Bank since 1975, and in peak summer, the humpbacks come close enough to hear them exhale. Get a hot sugar-rolled malasada at the Provincetown Portuguese Bakery, frying them since 1936. Marine Specialties, the cavernous army-navy shop down the street, is packed with enough odd treasures to keep a kid busy for an hour, most of it under five dollars. Dinner is at the Lobster Pot, the harborfront institution under the famous neon lobster sign, where the McNultys have run the dining rooms since 1979, the clam chowder has won the Cape Cod Chowder Festival four times, and the Portuguese soup, made with kale, linguica, red beans, is what the regulars order instead of the lobster.

Sandwich

Cross the canal and Sandwich is the first town you reach, which is fitting, because it's also where the Cape began. Settled in 1637, Prout picks it because it's slower and even more spontaneous. "I love Sandwich for its slower pace and the boardwalk that's genuinely stroller- and cane-friendly," Prout says. "And the boardwalk is where I'd start any morning here." It runs on old wooden planks across the salt marsh to Town Neck Beach, and the whole family can make the walk, with the grandparents at their pace and the kids racing ahead to count fiddler crabs in the mud below.

Stop into the grist mill on Shawme Pond after the Boardwalk, which has been grinding corn since 1654, and carry out a bag of meal ground that morning. At the Sandwich Glass Museum, a gaffer pulls molten glass from a 2,000-degree furnace while kids watch it turn into something tangible. Titcomb's Bookshop, in a barn on Route 6A, is the kind of store where three generations can easily disappear down three different aisles for an hour at a time. When it's time to eat, the Dan'l Webster Inn has been putting people up since the 1750s, when patriots met in the original tavern, over chowder and popovers in the glass-walled Conservatory. After dinner, take everyone up 6A to Twin Acres for ice cream after. And when the week ends, you're first back over the bridge, ahead of the Sunday traffic that punishes everyone who stayed farther out.

Know Before You Book

The mistakes that sink these trips happen months before anyone crosses a bridge, and Prout has watched all of them. “If renting a home, multigenerational groups might rent based on bedroom count alone and end up with one bathroom for 10 people, which is the fastest way to sour a vacation. Another mistake is over-scheduling, packing every day with activities instead of building in unstructured beach or porch time that lets different generations opt in or out," she says.

And when the weather turns, because at some point in a week, it will, she has the all-ages fallback ready. “The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster or the Cape Cod Children’s Museum in Mashpee gives young kids something hands-on while adults aren’t bored standing around," she says. "Ryan’s Family Amusements in Hyannis or The Lanes Bowl and Bistro in Mashpee offer great indoor entertainment. Pair that with a walk inside the Cape Cod Mall or at the Mashpee Commons, and there’s something to browse and something to taste that appeals to all age ranges without anyone needing significant mobility.”

And one of the best things kids can learn is how to play a musical instrument.Parade spoke with several psychologists, and there was one prevailing benefit of learning an instrument as a kid they could all agree on, explaining why children should learn a musical instrument.

But it goes beyond that one psychological benefit of music education. There are so many reasons that playing piano, guitar, joining marching band, etc. can benefit kids as they grow up and even into adulthood. This isn't to say they need to be masters at their chosen instrument. Even if there's no intent to take their skills to a professional level, there are so many cognitive benefits of playing music that come with just the act of practicing the skill.

According to the BBC, studies have shown that playing a musical instrument can be beneficial to people as they age, helping with memory, cognitive decline and more. But picking up music later in life isn't the only time you can see a positive effect. For children, these psychologists all agree that starting them down a musical path early is a huge way to positively shape their young minds.

The Biggest Benefit of Learning an Instrument as a Kid, According to 3 Psychologists

One of the biggest benefits of learning an instrument for kids is that it builds perseverance, psychologists say.

Dr. Heather Liebert, a psychologist with Kaiser Permanente in Northern California, tells Parade, "Regular [instrument] practice results in improved concentration and focus [and] encourages perseverance and discipline."

Dr. Amy Vigliotti—a licensed psychologist and founder at SelfWorks, a group private therapy practice in New York—concurs.

"Kids who learn instruments learn how to stay with something that's difficult," she says, adding, "They've had the experience of making mistakes, hitting a plateau and experiencing gradual growth, and they learn the life lesson that growth comes from consistent practice, not instant success."

She thinks that in an age of so much instant gratification, learning an instrument teaches valuable skills like "persistence, delayed gratification and staying with something that's hard."

Dr. Joseph Jones, a licensed psychologist, board-certified music therapist and pediatric neuropsychology fellow at Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital in Baltimore, MD, adds that learning an instrument gives kids tangible growth markers.

"Kids are naturally working on listening, coordination and memory all at once, but what really sticks with them is seeing themselves get better over time," he explains. "That sense of 'I couldn't do this last month, and now I can' builds persistence and self-discipline in a way that feels rewarding instead of like a chore."

"One of the great gifts of learning an instrument is that it allows children to feel capable," says Dr. Liebert. "They learn that they can overcome adversity and achieve goals of all kinds."

3. Effects can be seen into adulthood

"Adults who learned an instrument as children often show stronger auditory processing skills, such as understanding speech in noisy environments, along with better auditory working memory," says Dr. Jones.

Dr. Liebert adds, "Often, adults who learned an instrument as children are creative problem solvers in any context. They learn the value of practice, tolerate the discomfort of being a beginner and have prior experience developing competence over time."

"The benefit that really jumps out in my work with young people is the social connection it offers through making music with others in a band or orchestra, for example, or by connecting with an audience," says Dr. Jenna Rudo-Stern, a pediatric psychologist at Phoenix Children's. "Making music can give young people a powerful sense of belonging."

Dr. Liebert concurs, adding that playing an instrument "becomes a bridge for connecting with peers, mentors and community."

2. Emotional regulation

Dr. Max Doshay, a clinical psychologist and co-founder and CEO of KMN Psych, says that a common benefit to learning an instrument at a young age is emotional regulation through music.

"When kids play a musical instrument, they learn how to be patient and deal with anger by sitting still while frustrated," he says, adding, "They learn to have an outlet for their emotions."

3. Fine motor skills

"Many instruments take a high amount of finger dexterity, which in turn helps to grow fine motor skills," says Dr. Jones.

4. Stress management

Dr. Doshay says that practicing music is "a good way for kids to express themselves as well as deal with stress in a positive manner."

5. Family time

"Music is also an activity that families can share," says Dr. Jones. He adds, "When I taught private instrument lessons, many of my students' parents also learned an instrument alongside their children. This provided a meaningful way for them to spend time together, encourage one another and celebrate progress together."

Are There Any Downsides To Learning an Instrument Young?

"The negative impacts typically arise from parental pressures rather than the actual music," explains Dr. Doshay. "A child who has an overly demanding parent may associate their instrument with stress, or feelings of being perfect in order to avoid disappointment for their parents."

Dr. Vigliotti says that parents should also be cognizant of not over-scheduling their kids in music activities. "Particularly young kids, but all kids, need free play, friendships and rest," she says.

And Dr. Rudo-Stern states that parents should also make sure their kids are using proper "posture and technique that minimizes the risk of pain or injury" when playing their chosen instrument.

Crafted by legendary rock producer Jim Steinman, the track was built as the centerpiece for a musical about vampires. When that production stalled, that same song transformed Bonnie Tyler into a global superstar.

In a 2023 interview with The Guardian,Tyler explained how the song went from a vampire's lustful words to a karaoke classic. She said, "[Steinman] told me he had started writing the song for a prospective musical version of Nosferatu years before, but never finished it."

Tyler added, "Recently a friend unearthed a letter I’d written to her from New York back then. It says, 'I recorded an incredible song today. The trouble is, it’s so long, I don’t think anybody will ever play it.'"

She concluded, "'Total Eclipse of the Heart' had to be shortened from seven to four minutes. But everybody loved it so much they played the full album version anyway."

In a surprising turn, Tyler admitted that one of rock's greatest male voices, Meat Loaf, wished he had recorded "Total Eclipse of the Heart." The singer explained, "Around the time we were recording, Meat Loaf had lost his voice, and after it was a hit, he always used to say, 'Dang. That song should have been mine!'"

The song's music video was shot at a former Gothic asylum, the Holloway Sanatorium, in Surrey, England. Tyler called the building "frightening," adding, "the guard dogs wouldn’t set foot in the rooms downstairs where they used to give people electric shock treatment.

According to PEOPLE Magazine, the song finally became part of a musical in 1997, Dance of the Vampires. The production was a stage adaptation of the 1967 Roman Polanski film The Fearless Vampire Killers and debuted in Vienna before moving to Broadway in 2002.

Steinman told Playbillthat even though "Total Eclipse of the Heart" was already a massive pop hit, he always believed it truly belonged in Dance of the Vampires. In fact, he insisted the iconic track was a natural fit for the stage, despite its decades of success on the charts.

He explained, "If anyone listens to the lyrics, they're really like vampire lines. It's all about the darkness, the power of darkness and love's place in dark. And so I figured 'Who's ever going to know; it's Vienna!' And then it was just hard to take it out."

In 2025, Kelly Clarkson famously covered "Total Eclipse of the Heart" for her Kellyoke series. She stayed true to Tyler's version, which hit No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 in October 1983 and remained there for four weeks.

Grand Ole Opry's Only Female Canadian Member Turns 58

When Terri Clark first moved to Nashville in the 1980s, she was chasing the same dream as thousands of aspiring country singers. Nearly four decades later, she's accomplished something no other Canadian woman has: becoming the Grand Ole Opry's only female Canadian member, a distinction she still holds as she celebrates her 58th birthday on Aug. 5.

Born in Montreal and raised in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Clark grew up surrounded by country music. Her grandparents were performers who opened for legends including George Jones and Johnny Cash, and after high school she worked at a Chinese restaurant to save enough money to move to Nashville. Once there, she began performing at Tootsie's Orchid Lounge, the famed honky-tonk across the alley from the Ryman Auditorium, before eventually catching the attention of producer Keith Stegall and signing with Mercury Records.

Her self-titled 1995 debut launched one of country music's biggest breakout careers of the decade. Clark went on to score more than 20 charting singles, including six No. 1 hits across the U.S. and Canada. Songs like "Better Things to Do," "Poor Poor Pitiful Me," "You're Easy on the Eyes," and "Girls Lie Too" helped establish her as one of the defining female voices of 1990s country music.

An Opry Invitation That Changed Everything

One of Clark's greatest career moments came in May 2004, when she was surprised onstage at the Grand Ole Opry by Steve Wariner and her mother Linda Clark with an invitation to become an official member. She was inducted just weeks later on June 12, 2004, achieving one of country music's highest honors and becoming the only female Canadian member of the Opry, a distinction she still holds today.

Twenty years later, that milestone remains just as meaningful.

Speaking to Country Now in 2024, Clark reflected on celebrating two decades as an Opry member while releasing her duets album Terri Clark: Take Two.

"It's definitely a full-circle thing to be a member of the Opry, I think is anybody's goal or milestone who sings country music," Clark said. "It's such an important piece of the country music fabric and story and to be a part of that family is something that I never take for granted. I just still can't believe it. I still get nervous every single time."

A Career Still Inspiring New Generations

Released in 2024, Terri Clark: Take Two paired Clark with a new generation of country stars, including Kelly Clarkson, Lainey Wilson, Ashley McBryde, Cody Johnson, Carly Pearce and Lauren Alaina, as they re-recorded some of her biggest hits together. The project gave Clark an opportunity to reflect on the impact her music has had on today's artists.

"I'm just humbled and grateful and blown away with the names that I'm seeing beside mine on this thing and these songs that have meant so much to my life and my career," she said.

Clark also described hearing stories from younger artists who grew up listening to her music as one of the most rewarding moments of her career.

"At the time, you're just on your fast track and you're trying to make a name for yourself," she said. "But you don’t have that scope to be able to look ahead in that lens and see someday that this is going to be happening of what you’re doing right now. It’s the coolest thing when you’re able to just sit back and really reflect and see a full circle moment like that happen when these people that are having success, you had some little small bit of influence on what they’re doing now is a tremendous feeling and it’s a lot of blood, sweat, tears, hard work."

Now, as Clark celebrates her 58th birthday, her legacy stretches far beyond chart success. From platinum albums and No. 1 hits to Hall of Fame inductions and her singular place in Grand Ole Opry history, she remains one of Canada's most influential country artists and a lasting bridge between the genre's traditional roots and today's biggest stars.

'90s Rocker and Member of Iconic Rock Band Turns 67

After nearly five decades spent moving through punk, grunge and alternative rock, the guitarist has plenty to celebrate.

Pat Smear turns 67 on Aug. 5, adding another milestone to a career that has placed him in three of the most influential rock groups of their eras.

Born Georg Albert Ruthenberg in Los Angeles in 1959, Smear met future Germs singer Darby Crash while the two attended an alternative school in West Los Angeles. They started the Germs as teenagers, and Smear had to teach himself guitar as the group found its footing in the city's new punk scene.

The Germs' only studio album, 1979's (GI), was produced by Joan Jett and became an important record in the development of hardcore punk. The group's original run ended after Crash died in 1980, but Smear's career was far from over.

In 1993, Nirvana recruited him as a touring guitarist ahead of the release of In Utero. Smear made his first appearance with the group on Saturday Night Live that September, then joined its final tour and the famous MTV Unplugged in New York performance.

"For me, it was really new and exciting," Smear said of joining Nirvana in a 2013 interview. "I was just a guy from a punk rock band, thrown into this huge thing."

After Nirvana ended in 1994, Dave Grohl brought Smear into Foo Fighters' first live lineup. He played on the group's 1997 album The Colour and the Shape before leaving later that year. Smear began appearing with Foo Fighters again in 2005 and officially returned as a full-time member in 2010.

The guitarist has since earned 11 Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Foo Fighters in 2021. His long history with Grohl also makes him a direct link between two of the biggest rock groups to emerge from the 1990s.

Smear remains on the road with Foo Fighters today. His birthday falls between the Aug. 4 Toronto opener of the group's 2026 Take Cover Tour and an Aug. 6 concert in Detroit, giving him the chance to celebrate 67 in the middle of another major run.

Decades after his first chaotic shows with the Germs, Smear is still playing stadiums and adding to a career that has followed alternative rock from its punk roots to its biggest stages.

1967 No. 1 Classic Rock Hit, Featuring a Rare Recorder Interlude, Was Reimagined 4 Years Later—and Climbed the Charts Again

It’s been nearly 60 years since a Rolling Stones song with a recorder at its center topped the charts. But the song’s success story didn’t end there.

“Ruby Tuesday” appeared on the band’s 1967 album Between the Buttons. Primarily written by Keith Richards, the song features a piano-driven opening and lyrics about a free-spirited woman inspired by Richards’ex, Linda Keith. A unique alto recorder interlude by Brian Jones—who was known for bringing unusual instruments, such as a sitar or harpsichord, into the recording studio— sets the song apart from the bluesier sound the band was known for at the time.

Of the song’s inspiration, Richards confirmed it was about his breakup with Keith.

“That’s the first time I felt the deep cut,” he wrote in his autobiography, Life. “Basically Linda is ‘Ruby Tuesday.’”

Originally a B-side to “Let’s Spend the Night Together,” “Ruby Tuesday” became a massive hit for the Stones, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March 1967 after it received more radio airplay than the controversial A-side song.

Frontman Mick Jagger has said he never tired of singing “Ruby Tuesday,” describing the classic song to Rolling Stone as “just a nice melody, really – and a lovely lyric.”

Nearly four years after the Rolling Stones topped the charts with “Ruby Tuesday,” a reimagined version of the song was recorded by Melanie Safka. The folk singer released the stripped-down acoustic guitar version of the classic song, which peaked at No. 52 on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 1971—and went much higher in the UK.

Melanie, who died in 2024, once said that despite its history as a Stones classic, “Ruby Tuesday” became known as her signature song in some parts of the world.

“I wrote all my songs, except for ‘Ruby Tuesday,’ which I am sometimes, believe it or not, given credit for because it was such a huge hit in Europe that I am associated with,” she said in an interview with Classic Bands. “If all else fails and you say, ‘Melanie, Melanie who?’ And you say, ‘Ruby Tuesday,’ ‘Oh Melanie, Ruby Tuesday’, then they know.”

“I'm telling you this is what happened in Europe,” she added.

Nearly 60 years after its release, “Ruby Tuesday” remains one of the Rolling Stones' most enduring songs—a rare blend of mystery and musical experimentation that received a worthy acoustic reimagining that introduced it to new fans.

"Gourds, like pumpkins (or turnips, as was more often the case historically) are great decorations that look 'normal' but also carry spiritual significance," explains Celeste. "Candles placed in a hollowed out gourd serve as deterrents for bad spirits, and you can carve magical symbols into the surface to make an effective protection spell."
