Virginia Evans' quiet debut has become one of the loudest literary success stories of the year.

Her novel, The Correspondent, is continuing its remarkable rise, climbing to No. 3 on Goodreads' list of the most-read books in the United States this year. The latest milestone comes just weeks after the novel captured the 2026 Women's Prize for Fiction, adding another prestigious honor to what has become one of the year's biggest literary success stories.

Originally published in 2025, The Correspondent is an epistolary novel told through letters written by Sybil Van Antwerp, a retired lawyer whose carefully ordered life is upended as she confronts painful memories, fractured relationships and the possibility of forgiveness.

"I felt like including letters the main character sends as well as some she receives from a variety of corresponding partners allowed me to tell a 360° view of her life," Evans told The Rumpus. "You had to have different people to hold up the mirror at a different angle to Sybil."

The unconventional storytelling approach helped distinguish the novel from other recent releases, earning widespread praise from readers and critics alike.

The book's popularity has only accelerated over the past year.

After steadily climbing bestseller lists, The Correspondent became an unexpected publishing phenomenon, introducing Evans to readers around the world. I still don't understand publishing. So I thought every step of the way was the mountaintop. I keep getting a new mountaintop, I think."

Katie Couric is looking back on one of the most difficult moments in her life.

The former Today show host, recently sat down for a new tell-all interview, where she opened up in depth about the losing her first husband, Jay Monahan, who died just months after being diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer.

Monahan was only 41 when he received the shock diagnosis in 1997. He died nine months later in January 1998, just two weeks after his 42nd birthday.

While making an appearance on Alex Cooper's Call Her Daddy podcast on Wednesday, June 24, Couric bravely reflected on the devastating situation, getting candid about what it was like to lose her spouse within just a matter of months.

"It was terrible. It was so out of the blue," Couric stated, revealed that it was her nanny at the time who called to tell her that Monahan was "doubled over in pain" and that something was "seriously wrong."

"In a nanosecond everything changed," she said, noting that the cancer had spread to Monahan's liver and that the prognosis was "bleak."

"It was hell," said Couric, who had been married to Monahan for nearly nine years by the time of his death. They shared two daughters together, Elinor (Ellie) and Caroline (Carrie), who were ages 5 and 1 when their dad was diagnosed.

"It was crushing and heartbreaking to see someone young and healthy and smart and vibrant and loving, and an incredible father and husband, suddenly facing this," Couric explained, adding that her husband's diagnosis was "ultimately a death sentence."

Despite the unimaginable circumstances of Monahan's death, Couric found that her public persona actually provided her an unexpected sense of comfort.

"Believe it or not, being a public person, I got so much support," Couric told Cooper, noting that she had "bins and bins" filled with sympathy cards at the time. "In a weird way that was extremely helpful."

In the years since Monahan’s death, Couric has continuously used her platform to advocate for cancer awareness, even famously undergoing a colonoscopy on-air during a Today show broadcast in 2000. She got remarried in 2014 to her current husband, John Molner.

Second Lady Usha Vance’s coral Old Navy maternity dress is trending. And if you’re not sure why the $8.75 asymmetrical shoulder style is just about everywhere, you aren’t alone. SLOTUS is also kind of confused about why her pregnancy fashion sense has suddenly become a buzzworthy topic.

The New York Times fashion director and chief fashion critic, Vanessa Friedman, recently put the White House baby boom in the spotlight. Instead of politics as usual, her article underscored the recent change in conservative maternity wear. 

Vance, who is in her third trimester, along with White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt and White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy and Homeland Security Advisor Stephen Miller’s conservative podcaster wife Kate Miller (who both recently gave birth), have all flaunted their bumps, baring their bellies in stretchy, clingy clothes that are nothing like the tent-like empire-waisted dresses of the past.

“It’s a notable change from the wardrobe choices of former political spouses like Cherie Blair,” Friedman writes. “Her maternity style consisted primarily of tunics and other loosefitting attire.” And while, as Friedman points out, Vance, Leavitt, and Miller’s choice of maternity wear is a departure from the “tradwife aesthetic,” it seems as though the Second Lady isn't putting as much political stock in her choice of clothing.

The NYT article starts with a rehash of Usha’s Father’s Day Instagram post, pointedly noting, “She is wearing a stretchy coral dress that hugs her stomach.” And then it happened…the “stretchy coral dress” somehow became the center of the story.

On Wednesday, Usha posted a response on X, writing, “Now that we know the political significance of my $8.75 coral maternity dress from Old Navy, can’t wait to hear what the New York Times has to say about my elastic-waistband pants and compression socks! In the meantime, enjoy my pregnancy fashion (or lack thereof) and a good story with your kids on Storytime with the Second Lady.” 

Vance also shared a receipt for the coral dress. As it turns out, the Occasion by Old Navy Maternity Assymmetrical Shoulder Maxi Dress was actually $49.99. So, props to Usha for snagging the news-making item for the sale price of $8.75.

The Second Lady’s post got plenty of attention, with commenters replying, “Love this so much! Receipts too! You are absolutely beautiful and no high-priced fashion/dress can change that!,” “You go, girl! Love your sensible fashion style and your wit,” and “You make $8.75 look like a million bucks.” 

Hunting for Usha’s dress for yourself? It looks like the article and SLOTUS’s post have catapulted it into celeb status. According to Old Navy’s website, it’s sold out in all three colors. 

Charlie Benante is temporarily stepping away from Anthrax's 2026 tour after suffering an injury.

Fans hoping to see Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante behind the kit during the band's current European tour will have to wait a little longer after the metal veteran was forced to temporarily step away from the tour due to an injury.

Benante revealed that he injured his right hand and, following his doctor's advice, will sit out several shows through July 4 while he recovers. Filling in behind the drums is Darby Todd, who previously performed with Anthrax during a May show in Athens, Greece, when Benante was unavailable because of a scheduling conflict.

In a statement shared with fans, Benante thanked supporters for their understanding and said he is already focused on getting healthy.

"I'm incredibly grateful that Darby Todd will be stepping in behind the kit for these dates and helping keep the shows rolling while I recover," he said, adding that he looks forward to returning to the road as soon as possible.

The injury comes during a busy stretch for Anthrax, who are currently touring Europe alongside Iron Maiden and Megadeth on the "Run for Your Lives" tour. The band is expected to resume the trek with Benante once he's cleared to return, with North American dates scheduled to begin in late August.

Formed in New York City in 1981, Anthrax emerged as one of the "Big Four" of thrash metal alongside Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth. Over more than four decades, the band has become one of heavy metal's most influential acts, thanks to albums including Among the Living, Persistence of Time and Sound of White Noise.

The tour also supports Anthrax's upcoming studio album, Cursum Perficio, which is set for release on Sept. 18. The record marks the band's first full-length release since 2016's For All Kings and gives fans even more reason to look forward to Benante's return once his recovery is complete.

Adam McKay and Will Ferrell are behind some of the most iconic comedies of the 2000s, including Anchorman, Talladega Nights, and Step Brothers. 

In a recent interview with Business Insider, McKay spoke about why their professional relationship ended.  

“It’s a shame because we had a great creative partnership,” he said. “I think both of us underestimated the complications that go with not just having a company, but a very successful company.” 

The duo ended their partnership in 2019, which included dissolving their production company, Gary Sanchez, which they created in 2006.

“We had it for a long time and did a lot of cool projects. And Ferrell said it publicly, he was never someone who wanted to produce, so he was always half in and half out, but then he would love it and be proud of the company, but by the end, he wanted to move on,” McKay recalled.  

“It had become too much extra work; it was never his passion. I was really the one who wanted to produce, but a movie star’s life is very different than a writer-director’s life. So we split up.”

The director shared that he would be open to working with Ferrell again, 

“I totally have been open to the idea. We always got along great, we were tremendous creative partners,” McKay said of the actor. “The only thing that caused acrimony between us was when we decided to end our production company, Gary Sanchez. And I know it was reported one way or the other, but that was really it.”

The 58-year-old filmmaker reflected on his time with Ferrell. 

“Ferrell and I always worked well because we tended to get excited about the same things and neither one of us was precious if the other one felt really excited by something. I always say we never had one single creative argument working on any script we did together.”

The British rock band make numerous appearances throughout the cinematic oeuvre of legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese, but perhaps their most notable appearance comes at the outset of the director’s epic 2006 crime thriller, The Departed. As the opening montage unfolds, the unmistakable sound of “Gimme Shelter” perfectly sets the tone for one of Scorsese’s most acclaimed films.

Here's how the film starts: A black screen gives way to archival 1960s footage of Boston’s race riots, showcasing fires, violence, and police brutality, then the iconic wailing guitars of the Stones’ “Gimme Shelter” filter in. Above all the chaos, crime boss Frank Costello, played by Jack Nicholson, delivers a chilling monologue: “I don’t want to be a product of my environment. I want my environment to be a product of me.”

Once the classic rock song’s driving rhythm kicks in, the scene transitions to a daytime flashback in a Boston luncheonette. Costello enters with his signature swagger, collecting dough from the store owner and making a pass at his underage daughter as soul and gospel singer Merry Clayton hits the high note with, “It’s just a shot away.”

It’s here where Costello first meets Collin Sullivan, played in adult form by Matt Damon. Planting the seeds of corruption, he buys the boy some groceries as the Stones’ rock anthem bleeds into the film’s guitar-strummed original score by Howard Shore. 

The opening sequence goes on for several more minutes, delivering a lot more action and another killer needle drop (this time from Dropkick Murphys), all making for one of the greatest opening scenes on film—and, according to Radio X, the best use of a classic rock song in a movie. 

Beyond the music, though, The Departed is an acclaimed cat-and-mouse crime drama that unfolds around an undercover state trooper, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, and Damon’s mob mole, each secretly working to “make” and destroy the other. Adapted from Hong Kong’s Infernal Affairs(2002), the film cleaned up at the 2007Academy Awards, winning four of its five Oscar nominations, including Best Director and Best Picture. 

The film’s soundtrack, a masterful fusion of classic rock, Irish folk, and bluesy original scoring, perfectly mirrors the film’s Boston gangster backdrop and simmering tension, violence, and shifting identities. When it was released, it introduced an entirely new generation to the Stones, despite the Brits already being firmly entrenched in pop culture. 

Released in December 1969, “Gimme Shelter” was the lead track from their eighth studio album, Let It Bleed. The record, which peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, was certified platinum twice in the U.S. And its legendary opener remains one of the band’s singular hits to this day, with several publications, including Ultimate Classic Rock, hailing it as the greatest song to ever come out of a Stones session. 

So, yeah, Scorsese, Leo, Matt, Jack, Mick, and Keith? It really is one of the greatest marriages of rock and cinema.

While the large majority of popular ballads from the '60s might be about romantic love, one of the most memorable and emotional tunes of the decade was actually inspired by a very different kind of love...and a Scottish book of parables from the 1800s.

Recorded on June 25, 1969, and released that September, "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" by the Hollies was a huge hit for the band all around the world, particularly the U.K., where it went to #1 on the Official Singles Chart (in the U.S., the song was a Top 10 hit, peaking at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100). But the Hollies weren't the first to record the song, and they didn't write it.

"He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" was written by Academy Award-nominated lyricist Bob Russell, along with composer Bobby Scott, known for the instrumental composition “A Taste of Honey.” Tragically, Russell was in the terminal stages of a cancer diagnosis at the time, according to American Songwriter (he died in 1970 at the age of 55).

The first version of "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" was recorded by Kelly Gordon in 1969, but nothing much came of it...except that the demo ended up in the hands of Tony Hicks, lead guitarist of the Hollies. Hicks was looking for songs for the Hollies to record, and initially he thought the song was a bit too slow. After speeding up the tempo, however, Hicks realized the tune was the perfect fit for lead singer Allan Clarke's vocal range — and his expressive style was just right for the heartbreaking lyrics:

The road is long
With many a winding turn
That leads us to who knows where
Who knows where

But I'm strong
Strong enough to carry him
He ain't heavy, he's my brother
So on we go

His welfare is of my concern
No burden is he to bear
We'll get there

Knowing that Russell was dying when he wrote these words makes them all the more touching, but the origins of the phrase that inspired the song's chorus and title can actually be traced all the way back to a religious book from 1884 called The Parables of Jesus.

Written by James Wells, Moderator of the United Free Church of Scotland, the book includes a story about a little girl struggling to carry a big baby boy. When she was asked if she was tired of carrying him, she answered, "No, he's not heavy; he's my brother." (The phrase was later adopted by Father Edward Flanagan as the motto for the famous Boys Town children’s home.)

In a 2006 interview with The Guardian, per Songfacts, Hicks recalled hearing the phrase in the movie Boys Town.

"There'd been this old film called Boys Town about a children's home in America, and the statue outside showed a child being carried aloft and the motto 'He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother.' Bob Russell had been dying of cancer while writing. We never got, or asked for, royalties."

In the same interview, Hicks revealed how little the piano player — who would go on to become quite famous — was paid for playing on the song.

"Elton John, who was still called Reg, played piano on it and got paid 12 pounds," Hicks said, quipping, "It was a worldwide hit twice."

Decades later, the anthem of self-sacrifice and brotherly love remains a classic with fans of every generation.

For nearly 40 years, Daytime Emmy winner Jess Walton has portrayed Jill Foster Abbott on the CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless. Recently, the soap opera recast the beloved role, prompting viewers to wonder whether Walton would return.

The Young and the Restless headwriter Josh Griffith discussed Walton’s future with Soap Opera Digest. During the conversation, the showrunner explained that fans have nothing to worry about, as Walton is Jill. “She is Jill to the masses,” he shared.

He explained that availability kept Walton away this time, and the story he had written required the character on canvas. Thus, he and the Young and the Restless publicist, Matt Kane, sat down and brainstormed who could fill in, and it was then that Days of Our Lives star Lauren Koslow came to mind.

As far as what the future holds? Griffith was clear that they hoped to have many more opportunities for Walton to reprise her role, “based on her availability.”

Jill Abbott is the longest-running and only original character remaining in The Young and the Restless. The part was originated by Brenda Dickson in 1973, briefly recast in 1980 by Bond Gideon, then assumed by Deborah Adair, who portrayed her until 1983, when Dickson returned until 1987, when Walton took over the part.

Walton has taken home the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 1991 and the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 1997.

More than two decades after releasing one of the biggest albums of their career, Skillet is hitting the road to celebrate the record that changed everything.

The Christian rock band announced the Comatose 20 Years: Still Screaming Tour, a North American run commemorating the 20th anniversary of its album Comatose. The tour kicks off Sept. 30 in Schenectady, New York, and concludes Nov. 10 in Orlando, Florida, with stops in Philadelphia, Boston, Detroit, Seattle, Dallas, Phoenix and more.

The announcement was shared on the band's Instagram, where Skillet also revealed that members of its Panhead fan club will receive early access to tickets and VIP packages ahead of the general sale.

Released in October 2006, Comatose helped put Skillet's name on the map. Despite having already developed an audience through previous releases, Comatose became the band's first album to be certified Gold by the RIAA, and it later went Platinum.

It also featured some of the band's best-known songs, including "Rebirthing," "Whispers in the Dark," "The Older I Get" and the title track. The album's success helped establish Skillet as one of the most successful rock acts to arise from the Christian music scene.

Comatose also held a special place in the band's heart, as frontman John Cooper revealed ahead of its release. He explained how the album was intended to address real-life struggles that listeners could relate to, regardless of their background.

"I just feel called, during this time, to sing songs that are relatable to people who are going through hard times," Cooper said in a 2006 interview. "That's what I see on the road—all these young people every show."

Since Comatose, Skillet has continued releasing charting albums, including Awake, Rise, Unleashed, Victorious, Dominion and 2024's Revolution. Throughout their career, the band has earned multiple Grammy nominations, sold millions of albums worldwide and built a reputation for energetic live performances.

For longtime fans, the anniversary tour offers a chance to revisit the album that helped define Skillet's career while celebrating 20 years of music that continues to resonate with audiences.

George Michael spent decades topping charts around the world, but according to those closest to him, his most remarkable achievement never made the headlines—until now, that is.

A new biography, Tonight the Music Seems So Loud, reveals that the late singer quietly donated millions of pounds throughout his lifetime, often insisting his generosity remain anonymous. "We will never know how much George Michael gave away because it was secret," author Sathnam Sanghera told Fox News Digital in a piece shared on Thursday, June 25.

Although Michael died with an estate reportedly worth around £97 million (more than $128 million), Sanghera believes the singer gave away far more than most people ever realized. "George Michael was an incredible secret philanthropist, and the secrecy is what made it great," he explained. "We're only just finding out some of his charitable acts."

Among those acts was donating the first several years of U.K. royalties from Wham!'s holiday classic "Last Christmas" to Band Aid, along with the U.K. royalties from his Best Of album. According to Sanghera, Michael also quietly paid for strangers' IVF treatments, medical bills, funerals, and housing after hearing about their hardships.

And his generosity wasn't limited to writing checks. The book recounts how Michael regularly volunteered at a London homeless shelter, serving meals and chatting with guests while dressed casually enough that many people didn't recognize him. Sanghera also revealed that Michael's former partner, Kenny Goss, ensured each stop on the singer's tours included a donation of £20,000 to £30,000 to a local charity, with beneficiaries often invited to attend the concert.

"There are so many stories about his generosity," Sanghera said. "His estate continues to support those charities in significant ways."

How did George Michael die?

Michael died on Christmas Day in 2016 at his home in Goring-on-Thames, Oxfordshire. He was 53 years old.

After an initial post-mortem proved inconclusive, the Oxfordshire coroner later determined the singer died of natural causes. His official cause of death was listed as dilated cardiomyopathy with myocarditis and fatty liver, and authorities confirmed there was no need for an inquest.

In 2023, Michael was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

It was never a hit in the traditional charting sense. Yet The Marshall Tucker Band’s 1973 heartbreak ballad, “Can’t You See,” became one of the band’s signature songs and a cross-generational anthem that continues to find new audiences. 

The irresistible, country-rock groove even topped Ultimate Classic Rock’s best Southern rock songs ranking in 2012, found its way into a feature in 2023, and climbed into the Top 10 in 2025.

Formed in Spartanburg, South Carolina, in 1972, The Marshall Tucker Band consisted of lead singer Doug Gray, guitarists Toy Caldwell and George McCorkle, bassist Tommy Caldwell, drummer Paul Riddle, and reed player Jerry Eubanks. Their blend of rock, blues, jazz, and country caught the attention of Capricorn Records, and a year later, they released their self-titled debut album, followed in June 1973 by their lead single, “Can’t You See.”

Written and sung by Toy Caldwell, who also wrote “Heard It in a Love Song” and “This Ol’ Cowboy,” the track taps into that agonizing feeling of heartbreak, pain, and the urge to want to escape it all. It’s the kind of sway-inducing gem that really hits home with a listener, one who might think its writer borrowed from personal experience. But they’d be wrong. 

According to Gray, per Songfacts, Caldwell wasn’t nursing a broken heart when he wrote “Can’t You See.” In fact, he was happily married to the woman he’d stay with until his death in 1993. Those devastating lyrics—I'm gonna find me a hole in the wall / I’m gonna crawl inside and die—were just the product of really good songwriting. 

“Next time you hear this song in public,” UCR wrote, “take notice and you’ll make the strangest observation, especially if there is booze involved. There seems to be something about this particular song that makes the majority (very ironically) close their eyes and sway their head from left to right while singing the song's famous ‘Can’t you see’ line. That universal connection earns this song the top spot on our Southern rock songs list.”

As universal as the song is, its instrumental opening is quite singular. It begins with Caldwell’s thumb-picked electric guitar before giving way to Eubanks’ flute. The contrast signals listeners they’re in for something special: a Southern rock track that defies genre expectations from the very first notes.

Bubbling under the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 108 in 1973, the track has since become an enduring classic, thanks in part to the band’s 1975 live version of the song recorded in Milwaukee and released on Searching for a Rainbow, per Songfacts. It’s that live version that was released as a single in 1977, peaked at No. 75, and became a staple on classic rock radio.

Also contributing to its staying power, the song has been covered by multiple artists across country, rock, and blues, most notably by Hank Williams Jr. in 1975 and Waylon Jennings in 1976. More recent covers include Black Stone Cherry's hard rock cover in 2011 and Bad Touch’s bluesy version in 2021. Ed Roland of Collective Soul even attributed the musical structure of his band’s signature hit, “Shine,” to “Can’t You See.”

“We don’t want to stray from what we grew up listening to,” Roland said, via the band's website. “I think that’s something important for people to hear. It’s just who we are, and I don’t think we should run from it. Hopefully, people see that Southern connection to the bands we love like Marshall Tucker in our music.”

Today, the track thrives in the streaming era, having surpassed 1 billion streams on platforms like Pandora. It remains a staple for modern country and rock acts, bridging the gap between historical Southern rock roots and today's Americana and jam-band scenes. And it continues to get a lot of play from The Marshall Tucker Band itself.

Still actively touring and performing, the band is currently traveling across North America on their While I'm Young Tour. Though the original 1972 lineup has shifted over the decades, the group still features Gray at the helm, serving as the last remaining original member.

He’s joined by longtime members keyboardist/flautist Marcus James Henderson and guitarists/vocalists Chris Hicks and Rick Willis, alongside newer additions B.B. Borden on the drums and Ryan Ware on the bass.

“I think it was Toy Caldwell’s dad who said, ‘There’s more to gray hair than old bones,’” Gray once said, “and we still have a lot of stories yet to tell.”

On June 25, 1999, the NBC soap opera Another World came to a dramatic conclusion following 35 years on the air. However, the characters of Bay City lived on in an Another World continuation that many didn’t realize happened.

On May 4, 2009, in honor of the series 45th anniversary and the 10th anniversary of its cancellation, Telenext Media, the media production arm of Procter & Gamble, worked with writer Alina Adams to create Another World Today, an officially sanctioned continuation of the beloved series.

Adams, who previously helped the ABC soap opera Loving transition into The City, picked up her pen and helped bring the characters of Bay City back to life, after having previously worked with Procter & Gamble on the New York Times bestsellers Oakdale Confidential and Jonathan’s Story, two tie-in novels for soap operas As The World Turns and Guiding Light.

The project’s website explains that since the cancellation, fans have wondered “what became of their favorite characters.” Now, they were given the chance to not only find out “what they’ve been up to, but to also actually help guide the hand of fate in the lives of Bay City’s beloved characters.”

Another World Today featured interactive polls that allowed viewers to voice their opinions and help shape potential plotlines.

The series saw the next generation of established characters take center stage, while addressing loose ends left by the series, such as the return of Grant Harrison (Mark Pinter) following his shocking return in the Another World finale.

Following the cancellation of As The World Turns in 2010, Telenext Media and Procter & Gamble stepped away from the soap opera world, thus removing their affiliation and financial support for Another World Today.

Adams continued to produce the series for an additional 4+ years. The writer shared she “didn’t think it would be fair to the fans to lose their beloved show twice.”

However, all good things must come to an end. Without the financial backing, Adams worked on the project as a labor of love, but ultimately lost money from her actual paying work. Thus, on December 29, 2014, Adams shared her final installment in the series.

The author thanked fans for reading her series and explained  the reason for the cancellation, “Unfortunately, providing AWT to you for free took time away from my paid writing work. I had hoped to make up that difference with sales of my e-books, but that did not happen. As a result, I can no longer afford to keep AWT going.”

Fans continue to miss the characters of Bay City, but with Procter & Gamble returning to the world of soap operas with the CBS series Beyond the Gates and a renewed interest in nostalgic content, they hope to return to Bay City in the future.
