One of rock's most memorable songs didn't take all too long to come into fruition.

Legendary '80s rockers Guns N' Roses released "Sweet Child O' Mine" as a single on June 21, 1988, and the song defined a new era of music. Highly regarded as one of the best rock songs in music history, the track placed at No. 88 on Rolling Stone's list of "500 Best Songs of All Time."

The song was written as a love letter to front man Axel Rose's then-girlfriend, Erin Everly, and features what is considered to be one of the greatest guitar riffs. Guitarist Slash used a hypnotic, six-note string-skipping pattern and unusual chord phrasing to create the iconic riff, but he didn't think it was anything special.

Slash said he was just "f-----g around with the intro riff, making a joke," and this air of nonchalance is a theme when it comes to the chart-topping hit.

Guns 'N Roses wrote "Sweet Child O' Mine" in an impressively short amount of time — in around five minutes, according to bassist Duff McKagan.

When it came to McKagan's coming up with the bassline for the song, he said that it "just happened" and that he "never tries to force any sort of bassline." Meanwhile, Rose said that hearing his bandmate's instrumentals inspired him to come up with the iconic lyrics.

"Slash and Izzy [Stradlin, rhythm guitarist] got working together on the song and I came in, Izzy hit a rhythm, and all of sudden this poem popped into my head,” the singer said in Geffen press materials circulated in 1987, per Universal Music Group’s editorial platform. "It just all came together. A lot of rock bands are too f***ing wimpy to have any sentiment or any emotion in any of their stuff unless they’re in pain. It’s the first positive love song I’ve ever written, but I never had anyone to write anything that positive about, I guess."

The track immediately shot to the top of the charts, placing at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in September 1988. "Sweet Child O' Mine" would also go on to become the band's only chart-topping hit over the course of its decades-long career.

Supplements are often billed as "natural," "healthy" and "necessary," especially for detox purposes. But supplement-related liver failure has surged eightfold between 1995 and 2020, according to a Liver Transplantationstudy. Hepatologists are begging people to stop taking supplements so casually, even ones marketed as "good for you" and that everyone on social media seems to be taking.

"Most people think natural means safe, but your liver processes every supplement you swallow," points out Dr. James Park, MD, the co-director of the Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation at the Northwell Transplant Institute and the chief of hepatology at North Shore University Hospital, Long Island Jewish Medical Center and Lenox Hill Hospital.

It's ironic because supplements for liver health are often marketed as detoxes, when the large organ usually does just fine without help from a tablet or powder.

"The liver is one of the body’s hardest-working organs," Dr. Brian T. Lee, MD, a transplant hepatologist at Hoag, tells Parade. "It processes nutrients, helps remove harmful substances from the bloodstream, produces proteins needed for blood clotting, supports digestion and regulates energy storage."

Yet, Dr. Lee says that the liver's role in processing supplements (and medication) makes it extra vulnerable to injury if you take certain substances in excess amounts. Hepatologists are concerned that people are doing just that with a certain supplement, and it puts your liver at risk. Below, they reveal the common supplement they are begging people to stop taking so casually (and better ways to get the nutrient).

The Common Supplement Hepatologists Wish People Would Stop Taking So Casually

Four hepatologists agree that it's dangerous to take high doses of vitamin A supplements, saying it's an established cause of liver injury.

"It can range from just the development of increased fat in the liver from high doses of vitamin A over long periods of time, to the development of liver cirrhosis, which is advanced scarring in the liver," says Dr. Varun Saxena, MD, a transplant hepatologist with Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco. "[It can even go] all the way up to complete liver failure, where the liver function deteriorates and patients need to be rescued with a transplant."

Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin, and some people may become deficient in it, such as those who have pancreatic or bowel diseases, explains Dr. Abdul Nadir, MD, an HonorHealth hepatologist and gastroenterologist specializing in hepatology.

Dr. Nadir adds that malabsorptive surgeries, like gastric bypass to promote weight loss, can also cause deficiencies. These people may need to take a vitamin A supplement under a doctor's supervision—that's not hepatologists' concern.

"However, vitamin A, when used without any deficiency, can accumulate in the liver and result in fat deposition and inflammation in the liver," Dr. Nadir says.

High-dose vitamin A is classified as more than 10,000 international units (IU) or 3,000 micrograms (mcg) of Retinol Activity Equivalent (RAE). "If anyone is taking more than that, there is an increased risk of liver toxicity," Dr. says.

Dr. Lee says chronic, casual use of high-dose supplements is his top concern. One problem with vitamin A is that it's easy to exceed the limit when supplement stacking.

"[Liver injury] can also occur when people unknowingly combine several products, such as a multivitamin, a skin supplement and immune-support supplements, which each can contain preformed vitamin A," he warns.

Another thing to keep in mind, according to Dr. Saxena: everyone is unique. Just because one person claims that a supplement regimen is working great for them doesn't mean your liver will react the same way.

"It’s really important to understand that you just don't know what you're getting when it comes to supplements. Also, because the liver is responsible for metabolizing everything that we put in our mouths, it's really the liver that's going to be most susceptible to a bad reaction when it comes to supplements," he says.

How Much Vitamin A Do I Need per Day?

"Recommendations from the FDA and from good research from decades are no more than 10,000 international units per day," Dr. Saxena says. "That doesn't mean people have to reach that level. In reality, just getting to half of that per day is plenty."

Dr. Lee adds that your needs can change if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. The good news? "Most adults who eat a varied, balanced diet can meet their requirements without a vitamin A supplement," he says.

Some of his favorite ways to get vitamin A through food are:

• Sweet potatoes
• Carrots
• Pumpkin
• Spinach
• Kale
• Red bell peppers
• Eggs (in the yolk)
• Dairy
• Fish

Getting vitamin A through food is important. "Vitamin A supports normal vision, immune function, reproduction and healthy skin," Dr. Lee explains.

What Supplements Should I Take for My Liver?

Hepatologists don't recommend taking supplements for liver health. "There really aren’t any safe supplements that are marketed towards liver health," Dr. Saxena says. "We have no good way of predicting if a patient will have that [specific] reaction that leads to significant liver injury and in some cases, liver failure and the need for a liver transplant."

Dr. Park is especially begging people to stop taking anything marketed as "liver cleanse" or "liver detox."

"Every year, I see a patient who comes in with a severe liver injury because they're taking something called 'liver detox' or 'liver cleanse,' thinking that it would be better for the liver," Dr. Park says. "Everything you consume—including supplements taken through the mouth— will be detoxified through the liver, and sometimes it can cause severe liver injuries."

Dr. Lee notes that it's always a good idea to talk to your doctor before taking any supplements, especially if you're on prescription medications or have other underlying conditions.

"Along with causing direct injury to the liver, supplements can interact with prescription medications and may be unsafe for people with existing liver disease or other health conditions," he says. "Bring the bottle or a photo of the ingredient label to your appointment. Include multivitamins, powders, gummies and other products."

Not all books get the movie treatment, but that doesn't mean that fans aren't holding out hope that their favorite novels will be adapted for the screen.

On Goodreads, keen readers have been voting for which books they would like to see made into a film, and among them is a beloved supernatural novel that blends the paranormal with romance.

Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater was ranked at No. 9 on the list of "Books That Should Be Made Into Movies," with over 3,500 votes. Released in 2009, the book is the first installment in the author's The Wolves of Mercy Falls series, which features four novels: Shiver, Linger,Forever, and Sinner.

Spending 40 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, Shiver is undoubtedly the most popular book in the series, selling almost 131,000 copies in its first year of publication.

The young adult book follows Grace, a teenager who was bitten by a werewolf as a child but was never changed. Grace meets a yellow-eyed wolf in the woods, also known as Sam, a local boy who shifts from human to werewolf based on the temperature. As winter sets in, Sam struggles to maintain his human form, and the pair do what they can to find a cure before he shifts into a wolf forever.

"The reason why I wrote 'Shiver' is because I am a terrible person," Stiefvater joked in a 2010 talk. "I [wanted] to write a book that's so emotionally poignant, the characters are so true, and the circumstances are so dire, that it ruins someone's evening ... I wanted to write a book that would make people cry."

Shiver is high in the rankings of books that are not movies now but should be in the future, and the good news is that fans of The Wolves of Mercy Falls series may not have to wait much longer. In 2023, Deadline announced that the book was set to be adapted for the screen by filmmaker Andy Fickman, who is behind fan-favorite movies such as 2006's She's the Man and 2023's One True Loves.

Maddie Ziegler was tapped to play Grace, while Levi Miller will portray Sam. While there is currently no set release date and the movie has faced delays, Shiver was in production as of Nov. 2024.

Little House on the Prairie aired in the mid 1970's when rules and regulations on set weren't what they are today. Alison Arngrim looks back at filming the series and the crew's wild on-set drinking and parties.

The hit series was a family-friendly series that focused on the dynamic of the Ingalls family living on a farm. When Arngrim began playing the role of Nellie Olseon, she was only 12 years old and still recalls how the on-set crew was living off alcohol and cigarettes.

The actor appeared on an episode of the Here’s What Happened podcast, where she revealed the older crew members acted like characters from Mad Men. She makes clear that back in the '70s things were drastically different on set compared to what's expected from the crew in today's filming environment.

“They came from an era where everybody smoked and everybody drank, like all the time,” Arngrim explained. “There was no health food and no vegetarian options and gluten-free muffins. The prop men were in charge of the booze and the cigarettes, as well as the candy, so everyone was hanging out at their truck.”

Have no fear: Arngrim clarified that none of the young actors on Little House on the Prairie drank or smoked. It was simply the norm among the older castmates and the crew, with Michael Landon even "puffing Marlboros all over the place." Arngrim remembers him and the crew going through a few boxes a day.

Despite knowing that Landon would take shots of his liquor of choice, and the crew more than often drinking on set, she claims "no one was drunk on set." She recalls that whenever they were low on beer, someone would get sent out to get more.

“They were burning it off or something, because these guys were going on ladders and hanging lights and I’m going, ‘I know they’re living on beer,'” she explained. “The prop truck had a whole bar and at the end of each day when they were done they’d put up like a bar with a board on a couple of saw horses and then start really drinking."

The Little House on the Prairie actor even admits that the crew had "insane" Christmas and wrap parties that required everyone to have a designated driver. Arngrim couldn't fathom how they had the energy to party after spending a day of filming drinking.

“Their tolerance was God knows what,” she said. “Because they were out of the ’50s where you drank and you smoked. They did not think this was weird.”

The crew's on-set drinking escapades wouldn't have appeared an issue back when the series was filmed. In today's Hollywood, more than a few crew members would get the hook and be kicked off set.

In November 1994, My So-Called Life was in the middle of its first and only season when it featured an unforgettable rock music moment.

Starring Claire Danes, Jared Leto, A.J. Langer, Wilson Cruz, Devon Gummersall and more, the short-lived ABC teen drama was known for its ‘90s alternative rock soundtrack. And in one episode, the show featured a cameo from the Boston-based alt-rock band Buffalo Tom, playing their song “Late at Night.”

The episode was titled “Self-Esteem,” and it included a scene shot at a "secret" Buffalo Tom show. The real-life rock trio, Bill Janovitz (vocals, guitar), Chris Colbourn (bass), and Tom Maginnis (drums), appeared onscreen to perform “Late at Night” during a scene in which main character Angela (Danes) is ignored by her crush Jordan (Leto).

At the end of the episode, the song plays again, this time during an iconic hallway scene. Teen hearts melted as Jordan grabbed Angela’s hand in public for the first time and walked her down the high school hallway. “Late at Night” instantly became a teen angst classic despite never being released as a single.

“Late at Night” appeared on the 1993 Buffalo Tom album Big Red Letter Day, but it was overshadowed by the lead single “Sodajerk.” But more than a year later, it became one of the band’s best-loved songs, thanks to the attention from the television show.

In a 2017 interview with Drowned in Sound, Janovitz said the band noticed a big change following their MSCL cameo.

“It was gratifying to see that hard work start to pay off with Big Red Letter Day, and at that point it felt like we were getting more towards the mainstream and becoming rock stars,” he recalled. “Then one of our songs, 'Late At Night,' appeared on a television show called My So-Called Life, and we started to notice a lot more young women at our shows. Girls who were big fans of that show. That's when things really started to change.”

Speaking with Salon that same year, Janovitz noted that he was aware of My So-Called Life when his band was approached to make a cameo on the series.

“Our philosophy was to mostly say yes to things,” he recalled. “And I remember hearing about that show. My wife might have already been a fan by the time they approached us. It hadn’t been on long — in fact, it was only on for a year… But it had an outsized influence. And they just asked us, and we said ‘Sure.’”

“It was a great experience doing it,” Janovitz continued. “Then after that show, the impact was instant. All of a sudden, we started seeing a bunch more young, pretty women at our shows. … I mean, any women was a welcome addition for our crowd. But [you ’d see] these sensitive girls still, really, who are just maybe turning 21 and able to come to clubs. It was just great. It was excellent when we finally broke through a little bit.”

Three decades after breaking through with “Late at Night” on My So-Called Life, the band members recalled the experience fondly.

In a November 2023 post on the official Buffalo Tom Facebook page, a still shot from the episode was captioned with a look back at the band’s famous scene.

“The unannounced Buffalo Tom Pike Street show took place today on My So Called Life in 1995,” the Buffalo Tom caption read. “We had no idea the show would be as big of a hit as it was, but take full credit for bringing Angela and Jordan together as a couple.”

"I hope I snag the middle seat!" said no traveler ever.

We all know as soon as we step onto the plane, we have to squish in like a pack of sardines, so United is aiming to solve one of travel's biggest inconveniences: finding more elbow room without tapping into your 401(k).

The latest upgrade for the Chicago-based carrier has travelers asking if it's worth forking over more money, as airfare has reportedly seen a 27% increase over the past year or so.

United Is Upselling Passengers On A Shared Table

Whether it's your first time zooming through the clouds or your weekly business commute, we all wish our middle-seat neighbor would magically disappear. Conversely, middle-seat passengers probably wish they could be just about anywhere else.

United's new plan is to add a new option to its "Economy Plus" class, replacing the middle seat with a shared table more commonly found on trains.

But wait, there's more! United isn't stopping there.

Not only will passengers be able to score extra space without upgrading to first or business class, they can soon take advantage of "United Relax Rows," slated for 2027.

Economy travelers on select wide-body Boeing aircraft will be able to turn a row of three seats into a couch, making it easier to sleep or simply kick back after takeoff.

In a statement released Tuesday, United Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Nocella said the airline is "investing nose-to-tail across our fleet," adding that the new offerings provide customers with more "choice and value in every cabin."

Pricing has not been announced for either new concept.

"The Only U.S. Airline" With Special Seating

You may have heard how Europe's largest airline Ryanair planned to offer standing-room-only seats at bargain bin prices.

While that may not even qualify as seating at all, U.S. airlines tend to play it safe when it comes to rethinking the flying experience, which is why United's latest innovation could be such a game-changer.

The popular airline will be the "the only U.S. airline" with any kind of special seating — and since they fly practically anywhere you point out on a map, that makes it even more enticing to bid adieu to armrest wars.

"In American writing, there are three perfect books," The New Yorker'sAdam Gopnik wrote in 2010. "'Huckleberry Finn,' 'The Great Gatsby' and 'The Catcher in the Rye.'" He went on to call J.D. Salinger's novel "the handbook of the adolescent heart," praising its remarkable ability to speak to readers across generations.

That enduring classic reaches another milestone on July 16 as "The Catcher in the Rye" celebrates the 75th anniversary of its publication.

Released in 1951, Salinger's only full-length novel introduced readers to Holden Caulfield, a teenager struggling to find his place in a world he views as filled with "phonies." What began as a story Salinger spent nearly a decade developing quickly became a literary phenomenon, selling out its initial print run and earning selection by the Book-of-the-Month Club, according to the History Channel.

Over the decades, "The Catcher in the Rye" has become one of the most influential novels in American literature. More than 65 million copies have been sold worldwide, with roughly one million additional copies purchased every year. It has been translated into dozens of languages, named one of TIME magazine's 100 best English-language novels published since 1923 and ranked among the Modern Library's 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century.

"No matter how many high school English teachers try to domesticate 'The Catcher in the Rye' in class, it will never lose its satirical edge. ... It’s a permanent reminder of the sweetness of childhood, the hypocrisy of the adult world, and the strange no-man’s-land that lies in between," wrote TIME.

The novel's influence extends well beyond the classroom. Holden Caulfield has inspired generations of writers, filmmakers and musicians, while references to the book appear throughout popular culture, from films like The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Six Degrees of Separation to songs by Billy Joel, Green Day andGuns N' Roses. Its themes of identity, belonging and the often difficult transition into adulthood continue to resonate with new readers decades after its debut.

Although "The Catcher in the Rye" has frequently been challenged or banned in schools because of its language and subject matter, its reputation has only grown. Between 1961 and 1982 it was the most censored book in American high schools and libraries, yet it also remained one of the country's most widely taught novels. The controversy has done little to diminish its legacy as one of the defining works of 20th-century literature.

Salinger himself famously retreated from public life after the book's success, rarely granting interviews and never publishing another novel. Yet the story he left behind continues to captivate readers, proving that Holden Caulfield's voice remains as recognizable today as it was when The Catcher in the Rye first arrived on bookstore shelves 75 years ago.

The morning anchor made an announcement during the July 16 episode, letting viewers know that she'd be missing several upcoming episodes of the program due to another work obligation.

"We’re about to do it. Guys, I’m headed over to shoot Wordle. Over the next few weeks, we’re gonna shoot the whole season, and we’re super excited. Cannot wait for everyone to see it. It’ll probably air, I think, in the new year," Guthrie said on the Thursday broadcast.

Back in May, Guthrie was named the host of an upcoming Wordle game show that will air on NBC sometime in the new year.

“I feel very honored to be working with Savannah Guthrie on this show,” said Jimmy Fallon, whose Electric Hot Dog production company is producing the show alongside Universal Television Alternative Studio (UTAS) and The New York Times. "Savannah has that rare combination of intelligence, charm, and warmth that makes everyone feel instantly welcome. And she obviously knows how to host a show."

Guthrie received a great deal of support from fans, many of whom are excited to watch the new primetime game show.

"Get Up and Do! You got this Savannah," one fan commented on Today's Instagram announcement.

"So excited and can't wait," someone else said.

"Excited to see the premiere of the show," a third Instagram user wrote.

Guthrie previously took a leave of absence from Today after her mother, Nancy Guthrie, went missing in Arizona. The "Today" anchor was gone from early February through April 6. Authorities believe that Nancy, 84, was abducted from her home in the middle of the night. The case is still active as officials work to find who is responsible for Nancy's disappearance. Her whereabouts are still unknown.

Earlier this month, Savannah took some time off as well, with her colleague and friend Craig Melvin saying that she was enjoying a "much-deserved" break.

Starting August 16, guests can order the thrilling cheeseburger-taco combo for a limited time this summer season. A rich and flavorful overhaul of the classic Chicken Wonton Tacos, the new Bacon Cheeseburger Wonton Tacos come crammed with crisp bacon and seasoned ground beef, ensuring the ultimate twist on an age-old favorite.

“Combining two of our guests’ favorite dishes to create our new Bacon Cheeseburger Wonton Tacos was a no-brainer,” said Michelle Chin, Chief Marketing Officer at Applebee’s. “It packs bold American comfort in every bite: seasoned ground beef, melted Cheddar, Applewood-smoked bacon, pickles and a drizzle of spicy honey mustard. As expected, fans across social media quickly voiced their enthusiasm for the new menu lineup, most especially the Bacon Cheeseburger Wonton Tacos.

"The Wonton Tacos... I want it!" one user wrote.

"Can always count on Applebees to come up with the best stuff," another fan remarked.

Following the breakup with The Beatles in 1970, frontman Paul McCartneyrecorded two solo albums before forming another group in 1971, the rock bandWings. Wings was active as a group for 10 years until 1981, when McCartney's personal and professional aspirations started to misalign with maintaining a band. Over the course of that decade, Wings recorded several studio albums and went on several tours.

Wings, however, never found success quite like that of The Beatles.

Collider recently compiled a list of the most underrated rock songs in history and placed "Medicine Jar" by Wings at No. 2, just behind "Seasons of Wither" by Aerosmith. Collider wrote of the song, "The guitar licks in the background, [the] vocals, the solo in the middle—every single detail powerfully drives home the warning against 'sticking your hand in the medicine jar.' How is this not considered a classic?"

"Medicine Jar" was written by Colin Allen and Jimmy McCulloch for the 1975 album Venus and Mars. During initial recording sessions for the album, McCartney heard McCulloch playing the melody on the organ and said, "I like the tune...Let's arrange it, let's do it." The song became one of the first they recorded in full for the album in November of 1974.

Despite McCartney being the biggest name in the group, McCulloch ended up providing vocals for the track.

"Medicine Jar" is an anti-drug song, inspired by a moment when Allen found quaaludes hidden in the fingers of his then girlfriend's gloves. The lyric "I know how you feel now your friends are dead" is also based on Allen's experience losing friends to substance use. Ironically and tragically, McCulloch would pass away from morphine poisoning in 1979 at just 26 years old.

While Collider labeled the song underrated, it was subject to critical and reviewer acclaim upon release. Mercury called the track a "marvelous composition," and The Orlando Sentinel said it was better than any of McCartney's tracks on the album.

All to say, sometimes the least-heard tracks from years gone by are worth giving a listen today.

Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, reunited with King Charles for the first time in years, but one senior royal was notably absent.

Prince William was not in attendance for the royal reunion, which took place on Friday, July 10, 2026. Harry, his wife Meghan, and their children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet attended with Camilla Parker Bowles. William was not there; he was playing polo.

GB News spoke to royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams, who believes that William's deliberate absence speaks volumes. He suggests that the Prince of Wales is drawing a quiet but firm boundary, signaling that while the King may be open to healing the family rift, the relationship between the two brothers remains deeply unresolved.

"The optics," of playing polo while Harry met King Charles, he stated, "were deliberate." Fitzwilliams believes that William still mistrusts his younger brother.

"He feels betrayed because of [Harry's autobiography] Spare and the other interviews," he explained. "Catherine, as well, was openly supporting William."

Fitzwilliams explained, "So that's his view, and it made it clear because polo at that time... It's obvious. They haven't spoken for years."

"It is understood the last time they did speak was at the Queen's funeral back in September 2022, and then it was very brief indeed," said Cameron Walker of GB News, as reported by OK!

However, Fitzwilliams believes that at the moment, there is no chance for a reconciliation between the royal siblings. "Equally, it bears in mind the fact that what the Sussexes did, your actions have consequences. If you humiliate an institution, you make it defensive. "But the facts are, there is nothing [between the brothers] at the moment."

PEOPLE Magazine reported that the bond between Prince William and Prince Harry is “so broken.” The entertainment outlet quoted a royal insider who is said to know both brothers.

“I thought it would have perhaps eased a little bit by now, to be honest. But there has been no movement, especially on William’s side," they revealed.

The brothers reportedly have not been in regular contact since Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, left their roles as senior royals in 2020 to move to America. The couple openly spoke about their dissatisfaction with royal life in several key interviews, including one for CBS News, moderated by Oprah Winfrey. Additionally, Harry published Spare, his recollections of royal life, in which the clan, including William, was not painted positively.

The brothers have reunited at several key royal occasions over the past several years, including the funerals of Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth and King Charles' coronation. However, there have been no reports of reconciliation between them.

Cradle of Filth is giving fans what they asked for with a surprise announcement from the extreme metal band.

The British band, consisting of lead vocalist and founding member Dani Filth, drummer Martin "Marthus" Škaroupka, bassist Daniel Firth, guitarist Donny Burbage, new guitarist Joff Bailey and Kelsey Peters as touring keyboards and female vocals, announced the expansion of their Majestic in Death Tour with a second leg.

After the spring leg of their North American tour, which ran throughout April and May, the band is returning to the road for another round of shows.

In an Instagram update, the band unveiled the details for Part 2 of their tour, featuring a 23-date run.

The Majestic in Death II Tour kicks off on Sept. 29 in San Diego, California and concludes on Oct. 28 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

In case you missed the news—perhaps because you were stuck in the bathroom without your phone—there's is a whole lot of explosive diarrhea going around thanks to an outbreak of cyclosporiasis.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), since July 9, more than 800 people across at least 31 states have reported cases of cyclosporiasis, which is caused by the Cyclospora parasite.

What makes this bad boy a particularly cruel one? Cyclospora often infects people through what would otherwise be considered healthy food, notably fruits and vegetables. Thankfully, food safety experts and gastroenterologists say that there are ways to eat the proverbial rainbow with less of a risk of adding brown to it (I know, I'm sorry)—but you have to avoid making some seriously common mistakes if you want to stay safe.

From symptoms to look out for to expert-backed recommendations for how to stay safe during this outbreak, here's everything you need to know.

What Are the Symptoms of Cyclosporiasis?

Dr. Sumant Inamdar, MD, MPH, spokesperson with the American Gastroenterological Association, tells Parade, "Cyclospora infects the small intestine; hence, it most commonly causes frequent, watery diarrhea, which may be sudden or explosive. Other symptoms include abdominal cramping, bloating, increased gas, nausea, loss of appetite, weight loss and marked fatigue."

According to Dr. Inamdar, other less common symptoms include body aches, headaches, low-grade fever and vomiting.

"Symptoms typically begin about one week after exposure, although onset can range from roughly two days to two weeks or longer," he notes. "Some infected people have no symptoms."

Another cruel part of cyclosporiasis? Often just when you think you're out of the woods (or just out of diarrhea), it comes back.

"Keep in mind that having these symptoms does not mean you have a Cyclospora infection," explains Dr. Eyad Gharaibeh, MD, of Austin Gastroenterology. "One distinctive feature of Cyclospora diarrhea is that the symptoms can come and go in waves where you feel improvement for one to two days, then suffer from another cycle of prolonged diarrhea."

What can make Cyclospora tricky is that the symptoms overlap with a lot of other GI bugs and illnesses.

"A healthcare provider will usually ask how long the diarrhea has lasted, whether the person recently traveled and whether they ate fresh produce that may have been connected to an outbreak," says Dr. Jason Korenblit, MD, gastroenterologist and digestive health expert for JustAnswer. "Cyclospora is diagnosed through a stool test. However, patients should know that routine stool testing does not always include Cyclospora. Even some gastrointestinal PCR panels do not test for it. The healthcare provider may need to specifically request a Cyclospora test. The parasite can also be difficult to detect because it may not appear in every stool sample. A patient may need to provide several samples collected on different days."

When should you get medical attention?

"People should contact a healthcare provider if watery diarrhea lasts more than a few days, keeps returning or is causing weight loss," Dr. Korenblit explains. "Medical attention is especially important for people who cannot keep fluids down, have signs of dehydration, are pregnant, are older or have a weakened immune system."

How Does Cyclospora Spread?

Get ready to (probably) get grossed out. Dr. Inamdar explains, "Cyclospora is usually acquired by consuming food or water contaminated with human fecal material."

Chances are you wouldn't choose to eat food that you know has poop on it (and if you do, please talk to your doctor and not to me about it).

"The best way to protect yourself from Cyclospora is to avoid eating food contaminated with the parasite," Dr. Vanessa Coffman, Ph.D., alliance director for Stop Foodborne Illness, tells Parade. "The challenge right now is that investigators have not yet identified the specific food, or foods, responsible for the current outbreak or outbreaks, so there isn't a definitive product or brand for consumers to avoid."

"Public health officials in Michigan have reported a possible link to leafy greens, including pre-packaged lettuce, but it's still too early to know whether those preliminary finding apply to illnesses in other states," Dr. Coffman says. "Until investigators complete their work, no specific brands, growers or products have been identified."

What Is the Biggest Mistake People Make When Washing Fruits and Vegetables?

If you're the type to just splash some water on your blueberries or kale quickly before eating—or, alternatively, to soak them in standing water for a while—take note!

"The biggest mistake people make is assuming a quick rinse makes contaminated produce safe," Dr. Coffman says. "While everyone should wash fruits and vegetables under cool running water to remove dirt and reduce some germs, Cyclospora is different. The parasite sticks tightly to produce, and while rinsing thoroughly can reduce the number of infective cells, it may not eliminate them entirely."

Another Common Mistake To Avoid

Gastroenterologist Dr. Leybelis Padilla, MD adds that another safety measure is often overlooked in the kitchen when plant-based food is involved—even though it's a precaution you likely take when cooking meat.

"Forgetting to wash the surfaces they place fruit and vegetables with skin on such as cutting boards or kitchen counters," she says. "People are right to assume that eating produce with skin is safer, but it's important to still wash and scrub the surface of a mango, for example, even before cutting into it and then placing on their cutting board."

"People should understand that washing reduces contamination but cannot guarantee that Cyclospora has been completely removed, particularly from produce with complex surfaces, such as leafy greens, berries and fresh herbs," Dr. Inamdar adds. "Routine chemical sanitizers and disinfectants may also be ineffective against Cyclospora."

How To Protect Yourself From Cyclospora on Fruits and Vegetables

Doctors have some expert evergreen tips for veggie and fruit safety.

"Make sure to wash your hands before handling fruit or vegetables when you are preparing them, and then thoroughly wash them even if they say on the package that it has been prewashed," Dr. Katherine S. Freeman, MD, internist and gastroenterologist at Catholic Health, recommends. "Cut away any bruised or damaged areas of the fruits and vegetables and make sure to store vegetables and fruit in refrigerator as quickly as possible after buying them from the store, ideally within two hours."

While the usual methods to stay safe from food-borne illness are a good start to prevent Cyclospora infection, they still might not be totally sufficient.

"Cyclospora is especially difficult to remove from fresh produce at home because the parasite can cling tightly to the surface of fruits and vegetables and lodge in natural cracks and crevices," Dr. Coffman explains. "While rinsing produce under cool, running water is an important food safety habit and may reduce the risk of cyclosporiasis, it may not remove the pathogen entirely."

Sorry, salad lovers, but this means you may want to avoid raw produce in favor for cooked fruits and veggies for now, especially leafy greens, which have a lot of those cracks and crevices that Dr. Coffman mentioned.

"If you or someone in your household is at higher risk for severe illness—such as an older adult, a young child, someone who is immunocompromised, or someone who is pregnant—you may want to cook produce when it's practical," she advises. "Cyclospora is inactivated by heat, so foods should reach an internal temperature of at least 158°F (70°C). Using a food thermometer is the best way to verify that food has reached a safe temperature."

Dr. Padilla recommends exercising even more caution.

"Avoid eating any of the at risk foods entirely, or ensure that you're eating them cooked," she says. "These include pre-packaged salads, cilantro, basil, parsley, snow peas, raspberries and blackberries. Although, the exact food source has yet to be firmly identified, the suspicion is that it is from packaged salads."

Is Cyclosporiasis Treatable?

So you maybe didn't wash your pre-washed salad too thoroughly—or you did, but you got still sick. Is there any relief?

Phew, finally, some good news: Cyclospora parasitic infection is treatable!

"Getting the right diagnosis is important because the treatment for a parasite is different from treatment for a viral stomach bug," gastroenterologist Dr. Partha Nandi, MD, FACP, author of Heal Your Gut, Save Your Brain: The Five Pillars of Enhancing Your Gut and Optimizing Your Cognitive Health tells Parade. "Cyclospora is treated with an antibiotic called trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, often known by the brand name Bactrim or Septra. Most healthy people respond very well to treatment. Staying hydrated is also essential, especially for children, older adults, and anyone with severe diarrhea. If you have persistent diarrhea, don't assume it will simply go away. Getting evaluated early can shorten the illness and help prevent complications like dehydration. With appropriate treatment, most people begin to feel better within a few days, although full recovery may take a little longer depending on how severe the illness has become."

Billy Corgan is intrigued by the potential of having a Smashing Pumpkins residency at Las Vegas' Sphere—but he's not totally sold on the idea.

The "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" band's frontman has "mad respect" for the performers who have pulled off residencies at the 20,000-person capacity venue, including bands like the Eagles, No Doubt and U2, but told Consequence in a recent interview that he's not sure Smashing Pumpkins is "big enough" to take on the Sphere.

“I’m really impressed by anybody who can play the Sphere because it’s a heavy lift. It’s a production thing, and you really have to draw a lot of people,” said Corgan, 59, in the Friday, July 10, interview.

“So number one, I’m not sure sure we’re big enough to draw enough people over time to do it,” he continued. “But if somebody came and said, ‘Yeah, we believe you can do it,’ I think the Pumpkins could put on a show that nobody else would put on, because of the theatrical nature of the records and the presentation.”

The Grammy winner added, “And with that level of production, it would be like a goth winter in there, and I think we’re probably the only band that could pull that off at that level.”

Corgan made sure to clarify that Smashing Pumpkins has not been approached by the Sphere team about a residency, reiterating that bands need a "huge fan base" willing to follow them to Las Vegas for a successful run.

The rocker does hope that having more Sphere venues open up around the world, as first announced for Abu Dhabi back in 2024, would "loosen up" the artist restrictions as time goes on.

"Right now, you need bands that are big enough to draw multiple, multiple dates to make that whole thing work," said Corgan. "I’m telling you, mad respect to anybody who’s pulled it off, including Phish."

Ed Kowalczyk, best known as the lead singer for Live, is turning 55 years old on Thursday.

Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Kowalczyk met his bandmates Chad Taylor, Chad Gracey and Patrick Dahlheimer in middle school. While in high school, they created Live in 1984 and earned fame for their single "Operation Spirit (The Tyranny of Tradition)", which received airtime on MTV.

Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, Live released seven studio albums and became very popular in the United States. Their second album, Mental Jewelry, was released in 1991 and enjoyed modest sales, but Live's biggest success came in 1994 with their third album, Throwing Copper, which sold eight million copies in the United States.

Despite their success, Kowalczyk left in 2009 due to issues with his bandmates and pursued a solo career, in which he released an album titled Alive. Live ended up completely disbanding in the early 2010s, before Kowalczyk ended up returning in 2016, calling their reunion "tiny little Oprah moments."

"We started writing and kind of messing around in the studio, really right when we reunited. It's just so natural, " Kowalczyk told Stereogum back in 2018. "We got so inspired by just being back on stage and back in front of the fans, that when we got back to the studio, late last year, early this year, it really kicked up a level in terms of the energy."

Kowalczyk is currently the only member of Live, and brings a band of touring musicians with him when he is on the road. In 2022, he was fighting a legal battle with his former bandmates, who issued a cease-and-desist letter claiming he can no longer use the band's name.

"The assertions contained in the recently circulated ‘cease and desist’ letter from certain former members of LIVE are without merit,” reads a statement from Kowalczyk’s lawyer, Mitchell Schuster of Meister Seelig & Fein, PLLC. “Ed Kowalczyk has served as the band’s frontman since its founding and remains in that role. The claims made do not alter that reality. We intend to address this matter through the appropriate legal channels and are confident it will be resolved in Ed’s favor in court.”

Despite the drama, Kowalczyk has actively continued to record and perform under the name Live, but using variations such as +LIVE+, Līve and LĪVE. In addition, he performs with the supergroup Kings of Chaos, which includes Guns N’ Roses drummer Matt Sorum, as well as Orianthi, Nick Hexum of 311 and Aloe Blacc. The rock group made an appearance at the 2026 Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach concert last March.

Kowalczyk is active on Instagram. Just last month, he posted a photo of himself posing under the arch at Manhattan's Washington Square Park, teasing new music.

"Hey NY! Your favorite adopted polack son is in town! Holla! Be well ya'll!" he wrote in his caption. "Here to record some music over next ten - stay tuuuunned."

Lindsey Vonn is sharing an update on her "very slow" recovery following her devastating crash at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

The skier, 41, spoke candidly about her healing process while walking the red carpet at the ESPYS on Wednesday, July 15, telling PEOPLE, "It’s been a very slow process."

The professional athlete continued, “It’s been five months since I’ve been able to actually go to the gym in a somewhat meaningful way. And walking is actually still really hard for me. My ankle is still broken.”

Vonn's 2026 Olympic comeback was a devastating one, as she ruptured her ACL while competing in a World Cup race just a week before she crashed in the women’s downhill final on Feb. 8 at the 2026 Olympics in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. Vonn was airlifted to a nearby hospital, where she was determined to have suffered a complex tibia fracture, which led to compartment syndrome in her leg that nearly resulted in a necessary amputation.

“I was in a wheelchair for so long, I was on crutches for so long,” Vonn told PEOPLE at the ESPYS, adding, “It was honestly almost three and a half months that I was unable to walk unassisted. I got very emotional when I was able to walk on my own.”

Vonn has been keeping her social media followers updated on her recovery since her crash, marking the five-month milestone since her injury earlier this week on Instagram. "I knew one day I’d get here, just didn’t know how long it would take me…," she wrote alongside footage of her rehabilitation efforts.

"It took 5 months, but I’m finally here!" she continued. "Still a very long road ahead but my strength is coming back (maybe more mentally than physically still but that’s not a bad thing ;)"
