If you grew up with a toxic parent, you probably spent a lifetime trying to diffuse or downplay situations so as not to set them off. But according to several psychologists who spoke with Parade, there are actually times when it can be valuable for you to go ahead and just do the things that toxic parents hate—because those things may help you create a better life for yourself.

"Adult children raised in unhealthy family dynamics often need to practice behaviors that promote autonomy and emotional well-being, even if those actions are uncomfortable for the parent," says Dr. Lance Garrison, dean of The Chicago School’s College of Professional Psychology.

Of course, pushing back against years of norms with a toxic parent is a challenge, but the outcome may be healing.

"What I often remind people is that recognizing unhealthy family patterns is not about blaming parents. It's about understanding what happened so you can choose something different," says Dr. Roseann Capanna-Hodge, a psychologist, children's mental health expert and host of the podcast Dysregulated Kids.

Charting an uncomfortable path can be tricky, so Dr. Garrison recommends surrounding yourself with a strong support system. "Friends, partners, therapists and mentors can help provide perspective and emotional validation," he says.

If you have that support system and you're ready to start reclaiming your life in certain ways, this article explores the things you can do to push back against your toxic parent.

"I'm not suggesting doing these things to be mean or because you want to fight," says licensed clinical psychologist Dr. Patricia Dixon. Instead, she adds, "[These actions] can help you stop engaging with your toxic parent and allow you to take care of yourself."

What Is a ‘Toxic Parent’?

Dr. Jenna Budreau-Roman, a licensed clinical psychologist and founder of the Love & Theory therapy practice, acknowledges that there's a difference between a truly toxic parent and a parent who occasionally makes mistakes.

"There comes a time in every adult's life when their parent falls from the idealistic pedestal we had set for them. We realize they are not superheroes, they don't know everything and they're imperfect," she tells Parade. "In my professional opinion, a 'toxic' parent is one who displays an intentional disregard for their child's wishes, boundaries and general autonomy."

She adds that toxic parents often have a difficult time taking accountability or encouraging their "adult child's independence, autonomy and personal development."

Dr. Dixon adds that toxic behavior can "include intentional actions like manipulation or intimidation, but also pervasive patterns of criticism, silence around emotions [and] shaming." She adds, "The behavior is repetitive, not isolated... the parent might not know they’re causing harm, but lack of intent doesn’t make the impact OK."

Over time, long-standing toxic patterns "can undermine a child’s sense of self-worth, emotional safety and independence," says Dr. Garrison.

Those feelings can stay into adulthood, but there are ways to break the patterns by advocating for yourself.

"Healthy adulthood means making choices that invest in your well-being, even if someone else doesn’t like it," Dr. Capanna-Hodge states.

Dr. Budreau-Roman notes that toxic parents often struggle with boundaries.

"They feel entitled to override them and take great insult when their child pushes back," she says. "Boundaries are seen as rejection." But she calls them "the framework of healthy relationships."

When setting boundaries, "stand firm even if it feels awkward or uncomfortable," Dr. Dixon adds, saying that it's about consistency. "By asserting what you need, what your limits are and what you will not tolerate, you are showing your parent you value yourself."

And don't be afraid to start small.

"For individuals from highly controlling or abusive family environments, boundary-setting may need to happen incrementally and with support rather than all at once," shares Dr. Garrison. He says you can start by limiting certain conversation topics or not engaging in manipulative discussions.

2. Saying "no"

It's not enough to just set the boundary; you have to take action to show your parents that you're serious. That means occasionally (or often) saying no.

"You are allowed to say no to requests, demands for your time and to answering questions from your toxic parent that make you uncomfortable," states Dr. Budreau-Roman. "It will feel catastrophic at first, but like any muscle, the ability to naturally say 'no' can be strengthened with enough training."

3. Limiting access

Just because your parent raised you as a child doesn't mean they get unfettered access to your life as an adult.

"Think about the amount of contact you need with your parent in order to sustain a relationship that feels comfortable for you," suggests Dr. Budreau-Roman. That may mean not answering the phone every time they call, declining requests to "swing by," or even not allowing them to follow you on social media.

She says this distance is often needed "for the toxic parent to wean off the constant communication they have had."

Dr. Capanna-Hodge adds that you can create that distance in small increments.

"Sometimes the first step is simply sharing less, limiting visits or shortening conversations," she notes.

4. Prioritizing other relationships

Dr. Dixon says that it can be "scary" to a toxic parent when you prioritize your friendships or partnership.

"[The parent] wants you all to themselves, but allowing yourself to have other support systems makes you stronger as an adult," she shares. "[It] shows your toxic parent that you don’t revolve your life around them."

5. Making time for yourself

Despite what your parent may communicate to you, "self-care isn't selfish," says Dr. Dixon. She adds that it promotes important independence.

"When you put yourself first, you show your toxic parent you value yourself and you are psychologically full," she notes.

6. Holding them accountable

Accountability is typically pretty tough for toxic parents, but Dr. Dixon says you have to hold them accountable anyway.

"[It] allows you to normalize realistic expectations, patterns [and] responsibilities," she states. When your parent fails to follow through or crosses a line, she says you can calmly and clearly "call them out... and hold them to what they said."

This can go for wanting accountability for things that may have happened in the past as well.

"Adult children benefit from acknowledging how family dynamics affected them rather than minimizing those experiences to maintain peace," says Dr. Garrison.

7. Making your own decisions

"Toxic dynamics often involve control," says Dr. Garrison. It's important to push against that with "autonomous decision-making."

"Choosing careers, relationships or life paths independently is an important step in breaking that pattern [of control]," he adds.

8. Grey rocking

Dr. Budreau-Roman recommends "grey rocking" to deal with an especially frustrating toxic situation.

"In essence, you make yourself as interesting as a grey rock," she explains. "You respond with polite, boring answers that are devoid of any details. You do not ask questions to prolong conversations. Eventually, the other person loses interest and moves on."

9. Breaking the cycle

"Many adults who grew up in difficult environments are deeply committed to creating calmer, healthier homes for their own children," says Dr. Capanna-Hodge. "That awareness alone can be the beginning of breaking generational cycles."

Know that your parents may continue to make autonomy difficult when you're raising your own children.

"Toxic parents often feel entitled to their grandchildren. They steamroll their adult children's requests... claiming they have already raised children and they 'turned out just fine,'" Dr. Budreau-Roman shares.

The key to breaking this toxic cycle is modeling proper behavior for your own children.

"If a grandparent is overly critical, undermines parenting decisions or creates tension in the home, boundaries matter," says Dr. Capanna-Hodge, adding, "Kids are always watching how adults treat each other... healthy boundaries protect not just the parent, but the next generation."

When it comes to setting boundaries around visiting, communication and more, Dr. Dixon recommends framing it "around what you are allowing for your child, not what you are taking away from your parent."

5 Things To Remember When Dealing With a Toxic Parent1. Don't take the bait

"Many adults... notice that being around a difficult parent brings them right back to how they felt as a child," notes Dr. Capanna-Hodge. But she cautions that pausing and forming your thoughts in a controlled manner will leave you feeling better than if you are reactive.

"When you regulate yourself first before interacting with the toxic parent, you have the capacity to set those boundaries," she says.

If you need help working on this, Dr. Garrison recommends seeking help from a licensed mental health professional who can help you "develop improved emotional regulation."

2. Guilt is normal

Dr. Garrison says that feeling guilty about changing your relationship and setting boundaries is common, but it's "not a reliable guide."

"Feeling guilty is just a symptom of your conditioning, not a sign that you are making the wrong decision," he says.

3. Create a safety plan

Most toxic parents will push back against these types of changes to your relationship, but if you're truly concerned about their reaction, Dr. Dixon says to create a "safety and support plan."

"If your toxic parenting relationship includes coercion, harm or you fear they may hurt you; seek professional help... contact a therapist for support and reach out to authorities [and] legal services if necessary," she shares.

Additionally, she says you can "limit contact [and] be mindful of how often you reach out."

4. Change doesn't always happen

Despite all the work you may do, it's possible that things will not change meaningfully or at all in your relationship.

"More often than not, my clients need to come to terms with the parent they have versus the parent they wish they had," Dr. Budreau-Roman states. "If a parent is truly toxic, most likely they do not have the capacity to make sustainable changes."

It's a hard reality, but it's important to keep in mind so you don't fault yourself. As Dr. Garrison puts it, "You cannot change another person's personality or long-standing patterns. Focus on what you can control, which is your response and your boundaries."

5. There's an option to go no-contact

"Going no-contact is usually a last step after many attempts to set boundaries have failed," says Dr. Capanna-Hodge. "If the relationship repeatedly causes emotional harm, manipulation or intense stress and the parent refuses to respect basic limits, stepping away may be necessary for someone’s well-being."

If this is the route you choose to take, Dr. Dixon recommends doing so with support.

"Talk to a therapist about the cycle and how it's affecting you," she shares. "Create a solid, step-by-step plan to cut contact, including what you will say to that person and how you will manage if they need you in an emergency or [need to] contact you."

And continue working on yourself.

"Spend this time establishing healthy habits for self-care, boundaries and your values," Dr. Dixon says. "Allow yourself to feel upset about losing the relationship you wanted, but choose you." She adds, "Remember, you are more than your relationship with your parent. You are your own, wonderful person, and you deserve healthy relationships."

A new biography about Olivia Newton-John is shedding light on a deeply personal moment from her childhood—one that she said stayed with her for years.

In “A Little More Love: The Life and Legacy of Olivia Newton-John,” author Matthew Hild recounts how the singer was profoundly affected by her parents’ divorce when she was a young girl.

Newton-John later reflected on the experience with remarkable clarity, recalling that her father was the one who told her the news. The moment left a lasting impression. “I still remember that day,” she said in a later interview. “I was devastated.”

The biography also notes that the experience marked a turning point in her childhood, leaving her to navigate long stretches of time on her own while her mother worked. Reflecting on that period years later, Newton-John acknowledged how deeply it affected her, describing it as a time when she struggled to adjust and was strongly impacted by the absence of her father.

At the time, Newton-John was just about to turn 10 years old. The separation not only changed her family dynamic but also meant she would see far less of her father, who moved hundreds of miles away for a new academic position.

In 2019, the Hallmark star and her fashion designer husband  were among the most high-profile figures caught up in the Varsity Blues college admissions scandal. They paid $500,000 to admissions consultant Rick Singer, funneling the money through a sham charity, to get their daughters, OliviaJade and Isabella Rose, into the University of Southern California as purported recruits for the crew team. Of course, neither of their kids were ever actually competitive rowers. As part of the scheme, the girls posed for staged photos on rowing machines.

After initially denying charges of fraud, bribery and money laundering conspiracy, Loughlin and Giannulli pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud in 2020; she served two months in prison, while he served five, along with paying fines and completing community service.

Giannulli, creator of the streetwear brand Mossimo, served five months in a federal prison in Lompoc, Calif., starting Nov. 19, 2020. 

Why did Lori Loughlin separate from her husband?

The On Call actress has not publicly commented on her split from Giannulli, but Page Six reported that Loughlin pulled the plug on her marriage after she found "incriminating" texts on Giannulli’s  phone and email. 

Other tabloid reports have suggested that their marriage never recovered from the strain of the Varsity Blues scandal. 

"She felt that he got her involved,” a source told Us Weekly. “She didn't fully blame him, but he spearheaded it.” The source added that Loughlin “never fully forgave him and never fully got over it, and they were never the same after."

He also called Loughlin a “saint” and said she “went to jail for” her husband. “She didn't deserve to be dragged through that,” he said. “I know for a fact it was all him."

Turn on the forever hit, '80s dance track "Maniac" by Michael Sembello, and it takes approximately six seconds before your heart starts pounding and you must (you must!) start moving your body. The song, which was popularized in the hit 1983 movie Flashdance and its soundtrack, will simply never die, and we're so glad for that—especially since its origins come from intense horror, murder, and gory death. Sorry, it's true.

As music history lore, and apparently Sembello himself tell us, he wrote the high-energy track with his songwriting partner Dennis Matkosky. After watching the graphic, psychological slasher film titled Maniac, Matkosky was inspired to write a song.

The synopsis for the 1980 film Maniac, directed by William Lustig, is described on IMDB as follows: "A psychopathic man [played by actor Joe Spinelli] goes on a killing and mutilation spree in New York City."

Sembello dropped into the comments on Songfacts, and explained that Matkosky came up with the original inspiration for "Maniac," and "the basic idea and groove." He also recalls that the temporary lyrics for the chorus Matkosky had were: "He's a maniac, maniac that's for sure / He will kill your cat and nail him to the door."

"That direction obviously wasn't going to work," writes Sembello, "at which point the genius of Phil Ramone, producer of the soundtrack, who had the vision to see the potential of the song, asked us to change it to the present concept of a girl possessed with the passion of a gift for dance. Without Phil, it would not have happened."

Amazing how a song with such grisly beginnings could ultimately come into our hearts in 1983 and give us LIFE. The high-energy track often trends on TikTok and Instagram today and will not only go down in history as an '80s dance anthem, but it will also exhale serious life force from dance floors and, of course, workout studios until the end of time.

"Maniac" reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 10, 1983, and held the top spot for two weeks. Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie‘s mom, Nancy Guthrie, is still missing more than two months after she was abducted from her Tucson, Ariz., home—and Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos just set the record straight about investigators' reported lack of homicide case experience.

During an interview with KVOA published on April 3, Nanos refuted a claim by an unnamed law enforcement insider, who recently spoke with NewsNation's Brian Entin.

"This sergeant has been the supervisor of homicide for over two years," the sheriff declared. "And in that time he has solved some pretty significant, very high profile cases for this area. The Reddington homicide, the Goodwill homicide. And they solved that within days."

Additionally, Nanos reiterated that he has complete confidence in his team. "You cannot attack my department. Attack the Sheriff, but you will not get by with attacking my department," he said.

He also pushed back on claims that investigators made glaring mistakes early on during the investigation into Nancy's disappearance.

"Discrediting an investigation like this doesn't help anything, it's very harmful," Nanos pointed out. "No, we don't believe there were any mistakes made."

Nanos's remarks came after an anonymous law enforcement insider alleged during an April 2 interview with NewsNation that the "people that were there on the scene were not tenured homicide detectives." He explained, "They didn’t have a lot of experience in homicide at that point. To include the supervisor, who, from my understanding, never investigated a homicide before being installed as the supervisor for the homicide unit.”

The sheriff's response also came after the results of a workplace harassment investigation involving Nanos were revealed.

Nancy was last seen at her Tucson home on the evening of Jan. 31. As of writing, no suspect has been named in the case, despite Savannah offering a $1 million reward for information leading to the 84-year-old's recovery.

Shinedown just dropped the sixth single from their upcoming eighth album, titled EI8HT, scheduled for release on May 29, 2026.

Ahead of the release, Parade had the pleasure of speaking to lead singer Brent Smith about "Outlaw" and what inspired the new song.

"'Outlaw' is just... It's kind of a quintessential Shinedown song that's quite cinematic," Smith explained. "We love to create these songs that, when you listen to them, it's almost like a movie is playing in your subconscious, and you know, there are characters, there are different impulses in the song, there are different textures. It creates like its own world, so we have these songs from time to time to do that, and 'Outlaw' definitely did that."

Smith continued, "You know, when we wrote 'Searchlight' and then we decided to go a bit more... kind of rock country, but a bit more like outlaw country. Thus, 'Outlaw' was kind of born."

The Shinedown rocker went on to liken the feel of "Outlaw" to something you'd hear in a modern noir western, sharing that it has a "No Country For Old Men vibe to it."

With this latest release, that means we've heard one-third of the upcoming album. With 18 tracks, it's essentially a double album, and it's safe to say that several more hits haven't even been released yet.

EI8HT will drop just over two weeks after Shinedown's Dance, Kid, Dance Act II World Tour begins on May 13, 2026, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, at the Resch Center.

But the photos didn't stop there. Paul also posted a family picture between the two other vacation images. While it is somewhat blurry, fans can see the mom cuddling her two older kiddos, Indy and Ocean. 

Taylor’s mom, Liann May, shared the group shot to her Instagram Stories, adding, “Family time is my favorite time.” Along with the family photo, she added a video clip of the off-roading trip and a look at their serene vacation scenery.

In 2001, a Canadian rock band released what would become one of their biggest hits, and it was one of the most played songs of the decade. Despite their love-hate relationship among their fanbase, this chart-topper was ranked as one of the best mainstream rock songs of all time.

In the heat of summer, the band released their song "How You Remind Me" and was ranked by Billboard as one of the best releases at No. 4, beating out Creed's Super Bowl hit "Higher." "How You Remind Me" was released as the lead single of their third studio album and would become known as one of their signature tracks. Lead singer Chad Kroeger came up with the song's lyrics and concept, reportedly due to a fight he had with his then-girlfriend, and the first four lines were from scribbles he had jotted down in a notebook.

According to the rocker, in the heat of the moment, he ventured to their apartment's basement and began playing. He did so in the hopes of the lyrics, guitar riff, and loud microphone expressing how he felt to his then-girlfriend about the fight they had. The plan backfired, but it also birthed one of the biggest rock radio singles.

His then-girlfriend instead told him that what he was working on sounded really good, and Kroeger had a finished track within 45 minutes. The post-grunge, alternative rock song was a deviation from their previous albums. In an interview with Billboard, Kroeger admits it wasn't meant to be a "vengeful anthem" and just felt like "striking back."

"How You Remind Me" ended up skyrocketing the band's fame even further, with later popular tracks like "Rockstar" and "Burn It To The Ground."

"Yeah. That’s absolutely it. We went from playing clubs, playing half-sold out theaters to a sold-out, worldwide arena tour," said Kroeger to Billboard.

The 2001 track peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, and the band's only American chart-topper. It reeled in a Grammy nomination for Record of the Year and four Billboard Music Awards. Alongside its quadruple platinum status, the song was also one of the most-played radio songs of the decade, having been spun over one million times since its release.

More than 740,000 popular kitchen products were recalled on April 3, 2026, after it was determined that they posed a major safety risk to users. Costco, Amazon, and Walmart shared the recall notice for E Mishan's Emson Granitestone Diamond Pro Blue sauté pan sets as the company reported that nearly 100 people have been impacted by faulty products.

The Costco notice warns that "The metal cap on the screw that connects the sauté pan to the handle can become detached and forcefully eject when heated, posing impact and burn hazards to consumers." The UPC number for this product is 0-80313-08131-6.

Walmart's update further notes that this is a widespread issue. "E Mishan is aware of at least 98 incidents where the metal cap detached and ejected from the pan, including one report where a consumer received bruising and burn injuries," it says. The set was selling for about $40 through all three retailers and at this point the recall is voluntary.

If you purchased one of the two-piece sets featuring one 10-inches pan and one 11.5-inch pan between Aug. 1, 2021 and March 27, 2026, Costco, Walmart, and Amazon are all requesting that customers stop using their product immediately and return them for a full refund, whether they've noticed issues with the pans or not.

While this specific set is no longer available for purchase, other sets by the brand have generally good reviews. While many described their 20-piece pot and pan set as "really good cookware for the money," there were some unsatisfied shoppers leaving reviews as well. Some 1-star reviewers insisted the products have "not held up," and are "not worth the money," while others add that the handles "get very hot."

On April 4, 1960, Hollywood witnessed a defining moment when Charlton Heston took home his very first Academy Award for Best Actor at the 32nd Oscars. 

The win came for his powerful performance in the epic film Ben-Hur, a role that would forever shape his legacy as one of cinema’s most commanding leading men.

Heston’s portrayal of Judah Ben-Hur, a Jewish prince turned slave and chariot racer, stood out for its emotional depth and physical intensity. Director Yorgos Lanthimos helms this English-language remake of the 2003 South Korean sci-fi comedy film Save the Green Planet! It follows two conspiracy fanatics (Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis) who kidnap the CEO of a pharmaceutical company (Emma Stone), believing she’s an evil alien.

Accessing GLP-1 medications if you were anyone but a celebrity in 2022-23 was like finding a needle in a haystack. And even if you could find one, affording it may have felt out of reach. Dr. Christopher McGowan, MD, MSCR, AGAF, FASGE, the senior vice president of Peri-Procedural Care, remembers those days but says that things have changed.

"GLP-1 medications are far more accessible today than they were even a few years ago," Dr. McGowan tells Parade. "We now have FDA-approved options like Wegovy and Zepbound for obesity, Ozempic and Mounjaro for diabetes, a newly approved oral version of semaglutide and overall significantly lower prices than before."

He says the $1,000 price tag for GLP-1s led to a surge in demand for cheaper knockoff alternatives.

"The key issue is that these alternatives are not FDA-approved, have not been tested for safety or efficacy, and are not subject to the same rigorous manufacturing standards," he explains.

According to Dr. Alissa Chen, MD, MPH, MHS, a primary care physician, obesity medicine specialist and researcher at the Yale School of Medicine, the rise in alternatives makes it vital to become informed about the risks and benefits of these medications to protect yourself.

"As a physician, I always want to do my best to help my patients. But in the end, I can't help them if I'm not in the loop," she says. "That's why I've done research in this area and tried to understand it better. I want patients to have the best chance they have to be informed of risks and benefits and make informed decisions."

This ‘Cheaper’ Ozempic Alternative May Come With Risks, Doctors Warn

Doctors are raising alarms about the potential risks associated with compounded Ozempic and other GLP-1s.

"Not all GLP-1s are created equal—and compounded versions are simply not equivalent to the real thing," Dr. McGowan warns.

You may see the word "compounded drug" floating around, especially with GLP-1s, given the rise of telehealth companies offering them. But what does it even mean? It turns out, the definition of "compounded drug" has gotten trickier since GLPs became sought after.

"Compounding, historically, was a means of making a medication for a patient that suited their specific needs," Dr. Chen says. "An example of this is putting a medicine into a cream for a patient when it's not ordinarily available as a cream."

However, when there was a GLP-1 shortage in 2022, Dr. Chen says compounding pharmacies began making copies of these medications (Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound) to increase supply. People could buy the drugs at a lower cost—$200 to $300, at least for the first month, which was way less than $1,000 for brand-name Ozempic or Wegovy.

While Dr. Chen says the shortages are over, another specialist shares that people still have trouble accessing GLP-1s, which is why there's still interest in compounded versions.

"Though the pharmaceutical companies that make Wegovy and Zepbound say there is no shortage, my patients still report difficulty getting these medications," says Dr. Mir Ali, MD, a bariatric surgeon and medical director of MemorialCare Surgical Weight Loss Center at Orange Coast Medical Center. "The pharmacy tells them they are out of stock."

Dr. Ali adds that some people cannot get their insurance to cover GLP-1s.

"Sometimes even with insurance coverage, the out-of-pocket cost is still very high," he explains. "For these reasons, people are still seeking the compounded versions of these medications."

What Are the Risks of Compounded Ozempic and GLP-1s?

Experts are concerned that compounded semaglutide (Ozempic and Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Zepbound and Mounjaro) could be lower quality, with questionable quantities. "These are not the same drugs—and they don’t have the same standards behind them," Dr. McGowan warns.

Dr. Chen is also concerned about the standards. "It's hard to be specific about the risks of compounded GLPs because there is no oversight," she says. "No oversight means we don't know what is in them."

Doctors dig deeper into their concerns with compounded Ozempic.

1. Compounded Ozempic may have less quality control

"Brand-name GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy are manufactured under strict quality controls, with well-defined dosing, stability and extensive clinical trial data behind them," Dr. McGowan says.

He shares that the FDA monitors and tightly regulates these processes to ensure safety, consistency and effectiveness.

In fact, the FDA released a warning about the risks of using unapproved versions of GLP-1s, including compounded drugs.

2. Some compounding pharmacies are offering untested GLP-1 products

Dr. Chen is seeing more compounding pharmacies offering GLP-1s customized to a patient's needs. "Microdose" GLP-1s and medications infused with a vitamin are two common examples.

"It's important to know that those forms of GLPs have not been tested in large trials, and it's not clear if they provide benefit or harm," she says.

3. Compounded medications are not the same as generics

Dr. Allison Steele, DO, DABFM, DABOM, an obesity medicine specialist at HonorHealth Bariatric Center, wants people seeking compounded Ozempic to know that the pharmacy may use the same active ingredient, like semaglutide. But it can get complicated from there.

"The source of these active ingredients can vary significantly," she says.

Dr. Steele points to a recent The Center for Medicine in the Public Interest report that stated, "Most active pharmaceutical ingredients imported into the U.S by entities other than Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly (the makers of FDA-approved semaglutide and tirzepatide products) are from entities that are either not registered with the FDA or have never once been inspected by the FDA. "

4. Dosing errors can happen

Dr. Chen says one of the main risks of compounded anti-obesity drugs is the dosing errors. "This may be a result of insufficient instructions with the compounded medication or issues with too much or too little medication being given to the patient," she explains.

How to Vet Compounded GLP-1 Alternatives for Safety

Before pursuing a compounded GLP-1, Dr. McGowan suggests:

• Check insurance coverage updates or pursue appeals
• Explore manufacturer savings programs, including LillyDirect and NovoCare
• Work with a physician to identify appropriate, FDA-approved treatment options

If you're going to opt for compounded GLP-1s, you can take steps to improve the chances that you are getting a safe, effective medication that helps you reach your goals. Here's what doctors recommend.

1. Go to a legitimate source

This one is huge. "It is important that if a patient is seeking these medications, they should go to a legitimate source—typically a health care provider who focuses on weight loss," Dr. Ali stresses. "Getting these medications from social media or questionable online sources can lead to problems. Most commonly, they are getting something that just does not work if it is not from a reputable source."

Dr. McGowan suggests using a "state-licensed U.S. pharmacy, ideally one that is PCAB-accredited."

2. Do some homework

According to Dr. Steele, it's important to know about the side effects and limitations of the compounded medications you're taking. "Ensure that the ingredients and the sources of these ingredients are disclosed," she advises.

Dr. McGowan agrees, sharing, "Confirm exactly what form of the drug is being used, as not all are equivalent."

3. Keep your doctor in the loop

Even if you're going the compounded medication route, it's vital to let your doctor know.

"Always let your doctor know this is an option you're pursuing," Dr. Chen states. "If you run into problems, you want your doctor to know you were taking a compounded GLP so they can help you."

In 1977, David  Soul was a star on one of the hottest shows on TV. The actor played Detective Kenneth "Hutch" Hutchinson opposite Paul Michael Glaser’s David Starsky on the ABC police drama Starsky & Hutch from 1975 to 1979.

Smack in the middle of Starsky & Hutch’s four-season run, Soul capitalized on the show’s popularity by releasing his self-titled debut album as well as the single, “Don’t Give Up on Us.”

The song hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on April 16, 1977, and remained on the music chart for a total of 19 weeks. The love ballad would be Soul’s only top 40 hit in the U.S., officially making him a “one-hit wonder” in music.

In an interview posted by Interesting Media, Soul once revealed that financial problems with his American record label stalled his music career in the United States. “The timing was miserable,” he said.

‘Don’t Give Up on Us’ was written by a hit songmaker

“Don’t Give Up on Us” wasn’t specifically penned for Soul. It was written by renowned British songwriter Tony Macaulay, who wrote it not knowing that it would be recorded by one of the biggest TV stars of the time, according to American Songwriter. The outlet noted that “Don’t Give Up on Us” was chosen as Soul’s first single even though his album for Private Stock Records was already completed by the time he was given the song.

In an interview with the Sunday Post reshared on Soul’s official website, the actor revealed that music was actually his first love and that he had been a singer well before his Starsky & Hutch fame.

“I think my music was the most important thing to me. I started to write my own music and sing and play in all kinds of places,” he said. “I even wore a ski mask on TV so that people listen to my music rather than look at me.”

He added that the stability of steady acting work on Starsky & Hutch gave him the chance to get back in the recording studio.

“‘Don't Give Up on Us’ was released and went to number one just about all over the world,” Soul said. “Some people wonder why this guy was all who was all about driving fast cars and flinging himself at bad guys could suddenly think he was a pop star. They didn't realize that I was a singer and musician long before I made any mark as an actor.”

While Soul never hit the Top 40 again in the U.S. after “Don’t Give Up on Us,” in the UK, he had two follow-up hits with "Going In With My Eyes Open" and "Silver Lady," both in 1977, per Stereogum. The latter song knocked Elvis Presley from the top of the charts in the UK.
